n 18 year-old college youth, Ajay Lotan Rakme, has been allegedly beaten to death with an iron rod over a fight for just Rs 400 at Sangharsh Nagar locality in Chandivali on Wednesday night. He had borrowed the money from one of the prime accused, Pravin Rajendra Rathod. The other two accused have been

identified as Amol Balaji Nagar and Akash Ravindra Sardar alias Mogli, Sakinaka police said. Police say the deceased Ajay Lotan Rakme was sitting outside his building in Sangharsh Nagar, when prime accused Pravin came and demanded his Rs 400 back, which Ajay had taken on credit. However, he refused to pay up and a heated argument ensued, which ulti-

mately culminated in a physical brawl. His two other friends Amol and Akash joined him and assaulted him with an iron rod. “Ajay died due to serious injuries sustained by him. The accused have been booked under sections 302 and 340 of the IPC and produced before the magistrate who had remanded them to police custody,” police added.

Safai karmacharis of BMCrun hospitals threaten strike Protest planned against civic body's move not to extend the contracts of these workers By Abhishek Vissapragada afai karmacharis who have been under contract in various Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) hospitals protested on Thursday against a BMC decision and have threatened to go on a city wide strike if it is not reversed. The Additional Commissioner of BMC, Sanjay Deshmukh has sent notifications to hospitals requesting them not to extend the karmacharis' contracts and rather

Dalvi informed that notices have been served to the Deans of all BMC Hospitals regarding the protest and a reply has been demanded from them within three days. “If they don't reply to us or

bone marrow transplant. “The risk associated with this transplant is zero as proper protocols are taken to avoid any infections in both donor and recipient. Proper nutrition and facilities are provided to prepare the patient for the transplant since the old bone marrow is being replaced with the new one. In these cases, there are 25 per cent of patients accepting the marrow. Others reject due to some complications and health problems,” said Dr. Padate. He also said that the medical cost for the patient reduces significantly due to this procedure. “Normally such patients undergo continuous blood transfusion treatment every week. But this treatment cost only Rs.20 lakh including the medicines given before and after treatment. It also cuts the cost of finding donors from abroad and other cities,” said Dr. Padate. Bharat explained that Onkar's problem was detected in 2009 after spotting some bruises and dark spots in his body. Bharat had to pay Rs.5000 per month for blood transfusion treatment. Doctors at Kolhapur recommended him to get a bone marrow transplant at Hinduja Hospital. Aplastic Anaemia is a serious and rare condition which can affect people of any age group wherein the bone marrow fails to produce any new blood cells and can expose the patient to various infections.

However, when ADC interacted with Alok Bohra, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner of the RPF, he promptly directed his RPF personnel to do the needful. They then removed all the hawkers from the railway premises. Bohra confirmed the once disputed land between the railways and the BMC, became clear that it belonged to the railways, now the RPF would take strict action against hawkers operating illegally in railway premises. “Strict action will be taken against RPF officials if hawkers continue to operate in the railway premises from now onwards. I have deployed my staff to have reg-

ular checks in the area and if they fail, then action would be taken against them. The hawkers will be prosecuted under sections 144,147 and 157 of the Railway Act.” Nutan Jadhav, senior inspector, (encroachment) in the revenue department of the BMC, A ward said, “The land where the board is displayed belongs to the railways and action will be taken by the RPF. The BMC only does the maintenance work of the land. Egypt to rope in Indian celebrities to boost tourism

IN an attempt to pump up the dwindling flow of foreign tourists to Egypt, authorities in Cairo are attempting to rope in more Indian celebrities to woo travellers from India. Tourism, which is one of the centrepieces of the Egyptian economy, suffered a severe blow due to many violent attacks by militants since the January 2011 revolution. The latest success of megastar Amitabh Bachchan's visit to the country for the 'India by The Nile Festival' has prompted Egyptian Tourism to include more Indian celebrities in their effort to help them highlight the fact that Egypt is strongly back in the market. “Indian tourists are one of our most important, promising markets. We believe there are lots to do in the Indian market over the coming few months to increase the number of tourists to Egypt. Some of them are directed to the consumers such as 'India By The Nile Festival' in Egypt attended by Amitabh Bachchan," Ismail A Hamid, Egyptian Tourism Counsellor, told PTI. The tourism officials are also taking steps to increase the awareness of the different segments of Indian people to the beauty of Egypt, not only the Pyramids of Giza but also Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada. Sheriff Hassan Mohamed, a guide with Lady Egypt Tours, said Indians have a lot in common with Egyptians in terms of ancient history and culture.

Plants are passive smokers

PASSIVE smoking is not only harmful to humans, it also affects

plants which can take up nicotine from cigarette smoke and contaminated soil, according to a new study. The findings may explain why high concentrations of nicotine are often found in spices, herbal teas and medicinal plants, despite the fact that this alkaloid is no longer permitted in insecticides, researchers said. Previously, nicotine was frequently used as an insecticide until it was banned by the European Union in 2009 because of its toxicity, researchers said. However, a large number of food crops and plant-derived products still contain very high levels of nicotine. Dirk Selmar and colleagues at the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany, wanted to find out whether there are other reasons at play than the possible illegal use of nicotine-containing insecticides. They used peppermint plants (Mentha x piperita), which contain minimal traces of nicotine, in a series of mulching and fumigation experiments. "Tremendously elevated nicotine levels were detected after fumigation with cigarette smoke," said Selmar. Selmar's team is also the first to show that peppermint plants can actually take up high concentrations of nicotine from contaminated soils.

Valery Spiridonov, from Vladimir, has approached Italian surgeon Dr Sergio Canavero who recently claimed to have developed a technique that would allow the world's first human head transplant to take place within the next two years. Spiridonov volunteered for the radical procedure which would see his head re-attached to a healthy donor body. "My decision is final and I do not

plan to change my mind," said Spiridonov, who is battling the rare genetic Werdnig-Hoffman muscle wasting disease. Spiridonov admitted that he is afraid but said he did not have choices. "If I don't try this chance my fate will be very sad. With every year my state is getting worse," he was quoted as saying by 'express.co.uk'. Canavero has already selected some of the nurses and doctors he needs to put together a staff of 150 that will carry out the 36-hour operation.

The procedure has some medical precedent as it was recently reported that Chinese scientists had carried out a head transplant on a mouse. In 1970, a team led by Robert White at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, transplanted the head of one monkey onto the body of another. They didn't attempt to join the spinal cords, so the monkey was paralysed but able to breathe with assistance. It died nine days later.

Bandra by-poll to decide Rane’s political fate

uch will depend upon the outcome of the Bandra East assembly by-election which goes to polls on April 11. The outcome which will be known on April 15 will in a way decide on the future political career of senior Congress leader Narayan Rane who has staked a lot. He has put up a massive show of strength during his campaigning taking on Shiv Sena's Trupti Sawant in a triangular contest with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) Siraj Rahebar Khan. The simultaneous assembly by-election to Tasgaon-Kavthe Mahankal has been completely been relegated to the sidelines. The assembly by-elections to both Bandra East and Tasgaon-Kavthe Mahankal seats has been necessitated due to the demise of sitting members – Prakash @ Bala Sawant (Sena) and R R Patil, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) respectively. The contest in Tasgaon-Kavthe Mahankal appears to be a one-sided affair where NCP has fielded Suman Patil, widow of late R R Patil. Here all the major political parties having decided not to field their candidates against the widow of late R R Patil. But all eyes are on the outcome of Bandra East assembly by-election where Rane has staked his political career. He has decided to take on the Sena in the Thackeray family

If he manages to win the contest then he is likely to stake claim for the leader of opposition post in the legislative assembly. A defeat at the poll hustings will be a severe set back to his political career. On the other hand the Sena is leaving no stone unturned in its bid to retain the seat it won in the last election. It is a matter of prestige for the Sena as the Thackerays Matoshri residence falls in the constituency. The Sena is banking on the MIM to split the minority vote bank of the Congress thereby enabling it to scrape through. Sources in the administration disclosed that the contest is now evenly

poised with both the Congress and Sena putting all their might and resources. There are 10 candidates in the fray in the Bandra East assembly constituency. A total of 2.65 lakh voters which includes 1.46 lakh male, 1.18 lakh female and 6 Other category voters. The Election Commission of India has identified seven polling stations as sensitive in the constituency. In Tasgaon-Kavthe Mahankal constituency there are nine candidates in the fray. Here the voter population is 2.69 lakh, out of which 1.38 lakh are male, 1.26 lakh female and 4 Other category voters. In the 2014 assembly polls the voting percentage in Bandra East was 47.22 percent and in Tasgaon-Kavthe Mahankal it was 75.84 percent.

is Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS, the 53rd Dai al-Mutlaq, head of the worldwide Dawoodi Bohra Community returned to Mumbai a few days back to a tumultuous and warm welcome by the Dawoodi Bohra Community, after his historic first visit as Dai al-Mutlaq to USA and a pilgrimage to the holy shrines in Cairo, Karbala and Najaf. During his US visit, His Holiness dedicated four masjids in California – in Los Angeles, Bakersfield, San Jose and Orange County. In each of these cities he was greeted by thousands of Dawoodi Bohras from across USA and welcomed by state and city officials and local

community leaders. His Holiness returned to Mumbai accompanied by his five minor grandchildren and four minor grand-nephews and grand-nieces who were allegedly abducted from India by their mothers in January 2014 without the knowledge or consent of the fathers on the very day that their great grandfather His Holiness Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin RA passed away and were denied participation in a universally important tradition and ritual that completes the humanness of mankind in any culture – of attending the burial of and paying respects to their revered great grandfather – for which lakhs of Dawoodi Bohras from all over the world and members of all other communities rushed to Mumbai for a final farewell and blessing. According to an official, “On Friday, in the presence of a vast gathering of community members and particularly children of the

nstead of making money, shopkeepers of Tilak Nagar Municipal Market are reportedly reeling under a huge financial crunch as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has failed to deliver its promises made to them. The more than 50 years old Municipal market was marked for redevelopment in 2010 by Manthan Developers. The builder Abhijeet Rane demolished the market building in May 2010 and had according to the registered agreement promised to hand over the redeveloped market to the owners in 24 months. According to the agreement, the builder was also suppose to pay rent to the shopkeepers which ranged between Rs 7,000 to Rs 18,000 per month. The shop keepers initially seemed to be a happy, excited lot as they were getting their shops renovated. But within months their excitement soon turned into a sorrow when the re-construction work of their market abruptly stopped. Since then the shop keepers who are BMC licence holders have been attempting to contact the builder and also the concerned officers but their efforts are in vain from the last four years. The shopkeepers from last two years have also been habitually visiting the Assistant Municipal Commissioner Marker, Dadar with a detailed list of questions but are getting no answers at all. The suffers have also filed two RTIs seeking reasons as to why construc-

tion work has stopped but, the replies are pending. The worse unfortunate thing occurred when the shop keepers did not get their licences renewed.Anil Shah, one of the shop keepers said, “ We have no answers as to why the contruction work has stopped. We keep on contacting the developer's office but we are not answered at all. He also said that we have been completely misguided by the markets office in Dadar. We are not getting the rent from the builder from the last two years, hence we are paying the rents from our pockets. Shah added, “Our financial condition is disturbed as we had made

plans according to the agreement. We want answers as to when we will get our shops. The builder has not shown his face from the last four years and that there is no one to take care of our plight,” added Shah. The Tilak Nagar Municipal market shopkeepers as their last recourse met the BMC's Improvement Commitee Chairman , Prakash Gangadhare on Thursday, seeking a solution. Gangadhare promised the shopkepers that he will look in to the matter urgently and immediate action would be taken. He also has called for a joint meeting with the concerned officials on April 16, 2015 which has come as a ray of hope to the shop keepers.

n RTI activist filed an application early this year seeking information of Maharashtra state's inmates, including Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, who applied for furlough leave from prison between 2006 and 2014. But the state government lacks such records, as the 55-year-old activist has been made to run from pillar to post to extract this information. But the activist still did not get the details sought. The Government of Maharashtra received application of RTI activist Mansoor Umer Darvesh for the same in Jan but his request was forwarded to state's Additional Director General of Police & Inspector General (Prison) under section 6 (3) of the RTI Act, 2005 in Feb for further necessary action. But one month down the line, the Goregaon-based RTI activist was astonished to receive a letter from ADGP and IG (Prisons) that denied having any such details with them. The letter directed him to file a separate plea regarding all the 43 prisons of Maharashtra to get the details he is seeking for. Speaking over the lackadaisical demeanour of the state government, a dismayed Darvesh said, “It was not expected from the Government of Maharashtra specially from Mantralaya, who has been passing the buck. It is not feasible for me to file RTI in all the 43 prisons separately to get the details,” said a confounded Darvesh, who

Sanjay Dutt filed the RTI after Sanjay Dutt, contrary to rules spent over 118 days out of jail, either on parole or furlough between May 2013 and May 2014. There has been huge cacophony over Dutt being granted furlough on regular intervals eclipsing all the constitutional rules for which the authorities concerned have also earned huge brickbats. And the echo of this was heard in the Lower House of Parliament early this month when Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale raised misuse of parole, citing Dutt's case as for instance. Dutt, one of Bollywood's biggest stars, has been serving the remainder of a five-year sentence for firearms offences in series of Mumbai blasts that ripped though financial capital in 1993.

The Kandla Port retains its No.1 position among Major Ports for the sixth year in a row and attained 92.5 Million Metric Tonnes mark in 2014-15. Thereby, an increase of 6.3 percent in cargo throughput, as compared to the last year. The Port’s throughput is impressive, considering the fact that the Port utilized 87 percent of its cargo handling capacity of 106.32 MMT. These throughput levels ofKandla Port were accomplished, despite rain/ bad weather conditions affecting routine Port operations, idling of container terminal at the Port, continuing impact of Global economic recession and Industrial slowdown in the country. Concerted efforts and a series of initiatives initiated by the Kandla Port Administration have resulted once again into good performance during 2014-15 in all spheres with Efficiency, Productivity, Cost Effectiveness, Transparency & Customer Focus by the KPT under the able leadership of the Chairman, Ravi M. Parmar, IAS, who developed a coherent and competitive strategy to achieve this all- round performance.

other government bodies are simply not co-operating with them whenever they need help to deal with various political parties during the shoots. Talking to ADC, Line Producer Arpan Fernandez said, “All political parties demand money as per their rate cards, they demanding Rs 15,000 for a single foreign artist we use in our shoots. Despite that, if we use foreign artists in other criteria too like technicians, etc, they demand extra money for that too.” “Despite us having all the requisite permissions and documents, yet these political parties unions keep harrowing us to pay money, and if we deny them this money, they land up on our sets and try to stop the shoots. But now we are not going to tolerate their demands and like Feature Films producers who met CP Rakesh Maria and made him aware about their problems during the shoots, now we are going to meet CP and will demand cops should book all the political parties unions under extortion cases who land up on our set and ask for money,” Fernandez added. ''We are ready to pay charges to the government to use Foreign artist, but who are these union peoples who extort money from us and police does not take any action against them. If cops will strictly decide to take action, than it will stop automatically, but whatever Rakesh Maria has assured Feature Film associations members those words

Production Manager Gemma Fonseca revealed, “These political parties unions are demanding money before shoots and we have to pay them through fear, many times when they reached our sets to stop the shoots, we ring up local police but get no response. If this kind of activities of these cine political unions will continue than no one will be able to shoot in Mumbai.” “Cine unions don't seem to be taking Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria's warning too seriously, the fresh example was seen in Mehboob studio were they

recently disrupted the shooting,” Arpan added. While spokeperson of Mumbai Police Dhananjay Kulkarni said ''Mumbai police will not tolerate such kind of activities from any political parties ot uniond, if any Advertising Producer will complain against any political party union members who are trying to stop their shoots and demanding money, we will book them immediately, it's not question from which political party they are. If any police officer supports these political party union members, then we will take action against our department officer too.''

Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan assures state assembly

By A Special Correspondent

T

he state Assembly yesterday witnessed heated arguments and hot verbal exchanges between the ruling and opposition members over the issue of transfer of surplus water from Damanganga basin through the Damanganga-Pinjal and Par-Tapi-Narmada link project. After the pandemonium in the house, the Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan assured the members that not a single drop of water from the state's share will be given to neighbouring Gujarat.Significantly, amid the noisy scenes, the Speaker Haribhau Bagde issued directives for a presentation on the project to be made to members of both Houses in the central hall. This issue was raised by the opposition members after the question hour saying that there is no

Girish Mahajan clarity on how the water from the state's share will be retained instead of allowing it to flow into Gujarat. Senior member Chhagan Bhujbal (NCP) squatted in the well demanding the government's statement on how it proposes to resolve the issue of 133 tmc water from the Maharashtra's share flowing into Gujarat.Bhujbal said, “I have been demanding a response from the government ever since the budget session began and till today there is no statement from the government over this sensitive issue. The Budget session ends tomorrow. The government's response has been misleading and it has not

taken steps to make a presentation on the issue despite the session ending tomorrow”. Bhujbal was supported by his legislator son Pankaj, Jeeva Pandu Gavit (CPM) and Amita Chavan (Congress) who displayed banners and shouted slogans. The leader of the opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil also said that despite the session ending tomorrow, there is no clarity on this matter from the government side. Ruling BJP legislator Yogesh Sagar said that the government should explain the issue in length since it is very important. Shiv Sena MLA Gulabrao Patil said the issue of water going to Gujarat was a matter of concern for north Maharashtra. While replying to the various objections raised by the members, Girish Mahajan said, “The water sharing treaty has not been signed as the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is not yet ready. The state's share of water will not be given to anybody. I request the opposition members not to politicise the issue”.

Ponder awhile… “Men rise from one ambition to another: first, they seek to secure themselves against attack, and then they attack others.” — Niccolo Machiavelli

HE recently concluded state assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and the subsequent efforts towards government formation, after several rounds of deliberations between the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to formulate a Common Minimum Programme (CMP), installed in office a coalition government of a conspicuously new nature; it was a PDP-BJP coalition dispensation. fired numerous rounds of fire. The workers did not hit back, they just ran away and as the bullets hit them, they fell down. Quite a few persons must have been injured but so far there has been no information about this. What is amazing and incredible is that no questions are being asked. There is no police inquiry. The state government and its supporter at the centre appear to have decided it was an encounter. There are demonstrations against the police atrocities but who cares? The establishment both at the state and central levels are on the side of the police. They seem to have decided the 20 innocent men who were brutally killed by the police were sandalwood smugglers. And the police believe that when they see a sandalwood smuggler, they have a right to kill him without bothering to get evidence in this regard. This inhuman act of the police needs to be looked into. The police have committed a crime. There was no need of firing at all. The police were in no danger. they killed the poor folks without bothering to find out whether they were sandalwood smugglers or not. The police do not have to bother about the monstrous massacre of innocent people. The centre and the state government are solidly with them.

decades back, a political volcano burst out in the Kashmir Valley, where hundreds of armed youth, driven over the edge of their endurance by perpetuated maladministration and from the after effects of repeated unsavoury political dynamics within the state and occasionally from New Delhi, and actively abetted by Pakistan, took to armed resurrection. Their revolt combined pronounced overtones of Islamic extremism with a hollering for secession from India. Its first casualty was the state’s notable Pandit community, who were looked upon as antagonists and summarily hounded out of their centuries old dwellings. The preceding twenty-five years have been a narrative of agony, acts of extremism, threats, consequent state repression, hopelessness, and killings, interspersed with ef-

Uplifting the economy Although the BJP did not win any seat representing the electorate of the crucial Kashmir Valley, it significantly improved its performance in other parts of the state, notably in the regions of Jammu and Ladakh; during the course of the election campaign, the BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasized on the imperative of economic growth and of the creation of employment opportunities to benefit the people who reside in a crushingly job starved economy and for whom the consequent desperation is a tale going back several decades. Uplifting the long neglected economy of the state, increasing opportunities for a better livelihood of the people of the state, social cohesion and unity, and providing a better measure of security to their lives from the extremists and peremptoriness of the government agencies, are among the top priorities explicated in the agreement between the PDP and the BJP, akin to a playbook, enumerating the programme of governance. The impending tasks are daunting and require skill, tenacity, and vision, collectively, to cut through the maze of challenges and shortcomings in the socio-political fabric of the state to bring into effect tangible results for the better. Among other tasks, the goal of achieving social cohesion is perhaps particularly sensitive. About two-and-a-half-

BY AND LARGE

The new state government, after getting into the saddle of governance during the first few months of its rule, has officially announced its intention of rehabilitating the Pandits, languishing for decades in the Jammu region of the state. The Chief Minister of J&K, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, has announced that the state government would acquire and provide land for the displaced Pandit community in the Kashmir Valley. The Common Minimum Programme, put in place jointly by the BJP and the PDP has this objective as one of its important agendas. This announcement is probably placing the first brick, metaphorically speaking, to rebuild the broken house that is Kashmir, still in a near-dilapidated state, ever since a devastating tempest tore into it with unrelenting fury. In this objective, Sayeed has the wholehearted support of the central government. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh views it as an important priority. He had earlier written a letter on the same subject, a few months back, to the former chief minister of J&K, Omar Abdullah, regarding identification of land for the displaced Pandit community. Additionally, the state government of J&K has set aside Rs.580 crore for the concerned task.

NE only rises to such an ideal by degrees. And the first degree is gentleness. That is why in the English language the word gentleman was used. Why gentle? Because he had taken the first step towards the art of personality. It is not necessary for a person to be rich, or to be in a good position, or to hold a high rank. That does not necessarily make him gentle. However, high the position and rank one may have, one may still not be gentle. Once a person has become thoughtful his first step is to become gentle. As soon as thoughtfulness is developed in him, he takes his first step towards real evolution. Gentleness is the greatest power of all. Gentleness is like the power of water: water is purifying, and if there is a rock in the path of a stream of water it will surround the rock. It will not break it, for water is pliable, and so is the one who is gentle. Gentleness in the long run will always purify everything. We might imagine that everyone tries to be thoughtful. And yet when we consider two

things in our daily life – when silence is needed and when speech – we find that we make a thousand mistakes. Often we speak more than we need to speak. Or we give our confidence to someone to whom it would have been better not to have given it, or we have spoken to someone and we should not have done it. But it is too late when we think of

The more one thinks of others the more dignified one becomes, because dignity springs from thoughtfulness. Then very often a person makes a habit of being talkative. He wastes his own time, his own thought, and time of the others. And very it afterwards. Sometimes in a mood of haste, often it ends in confusion. MAHARASHTRA Government's decision to screen Marathi movies at the 6 pm prime time slot by it's coercion may prove to be detrimental to Marathi cinema's interests because it may generate negative publicity. By reserving a time slot, can it force people to watch movies which they would not because of steep rates of multiplexes and at the same time can they force producers to screen at multiplexes despite heavy rentals. How will they recover the costs? Moreover, Marathi movies are made on a shoe string budget and Govt is trying to squeeze the multiplexes for some cheap political gains. Why is the Govt not making all Marathi movies tax free for five years so that maximum people can watch them? Why does a multiplex have to show a Marathi movie in the prime time slot when on first three days, movies which are running to packed houses should make way to some Marathi movie which may not have even the half house full. It's absurd to dictate the economics of film trade in a democracy. What Govt is trying is not democracy. Certainly not!

CM is flawed

Maharashtra CM CM Fadnavis has issued a clarification saying that the ban on slaughter of cows, bulls and bullocks is not based on religious sentiments but is a move to prevent cruelty to animals ("Cow ban law to prevent cruelty to animals", ADC, April 8) His claim is seriously flawed and lacks a scientific basis. Without doubt it is religion which has played a key role in guiding the ban. In Israel and in many Islamic nations where the pig is viewed as a ritually unclean animal, pork is available and in Israel pig farms are set up by Jews and many liberal Jews consume pork which has become staple fare on the menus of restaurants. It is surprising that at a time when science and the rationalist lobby have soundly debunked the crude paganism, inhuman racism, xenophobia and hilarious mythology centered on millions of gods and goddesses and so-called sacred animals like the cow of the Hindu

scriptures, the Hindu right wing is still clinging to mumbo-jumbo and making scriptural nonsense on the basis of public life in India. If prevention of cruelty is the issue, then killing of trees and plants for food, medicines, fuel and for industrial use is nothing short of cruelty since it is proven that flora are sensitive to pain and felling or picking these is murder. Application of chemicals in farms to protect crops kills millions of rodents, reptiles, worms and microorganisms. This too is an act of cruelty and murder. In the wild, herbivores are relentlessly targeted by predators and predatory animals are in turn killed by competitors over disputes pertaining to territory. Man is omnivorous, meat is a superior form of nutrition that complements the advantages of a vegetarian diet. So, let's be rational instead of casting our lot with the pseudoscience of religion. — Nishant Berry, Mumbai

DDP is a fraud THE recently released Draft Development a Plan (DDP) for Mumbai is a monumental fraud at an exorbitant cost perpetrated on the citizens of our city. Every day reveals staggering errors - green spaces obliterated, heritage precincts missing, major roads cutting through playgrounds and church properties, etc. - that are so fundamental that a better plan could have been prepared by a class of school children. It appears that the original consultant chosen to prepare the DDP was sidestepped in favour of another whose gross incompetence is on display for all to see. I would not be surprised if the chief qualification of the party that was chosen was that he could offer the BMC officials in charge the heftiest kickback. What is

formulated to ensure that multiplexes showed at least one Marathi film during peak hours, that is between six and nine in the evening. Tawde belongs to the BJP and the government is headed by the BJP in coalition with the Shiv Sena. While the Shiv Sena, strictly limited to the state, is always eager for strident regionalism, the BJP's thrust towards regionalism is rather striking. The BJP is a national party. Mr Tawde has referred, pertinently, to his predecessors. It was the Congress, another national party, that first insisted that multiplexes screen Marathi films for a fixed number of shows throughout the year, even if it is in the morning. Besides, the proposed law is making people uncomfortable. State governments feel that promoting the art and culture of the region is part of their reif their audience would develop an sponsibilities. Many such cases have come to the fore in the recent past but without any solution or strict action taken. It is of utmost important that some very strict law is made against its misuse like canceling of licence of such stores, heavy penalty like minimum of Rs 1 crore and rigorous imprisonment etc. And such laws must be strictly implemented too. Jaffar nabbed

Mumbai's most notorious chainsnatcher THIS refers to ‘Mumbai’s biggest chain snatcher Jaffar alias Chikna nabbed’ (ADC, April 8. With gold prices on an upward spiral, women in the city are under constant threat from chain-snatchers. As far as the rising cases of chain-snatching are concerned, I feel women themselves must

avoid wearing gold jewelery, and if at all they wear them, they must be alert. The best way to curb such incidents is that women should start wearing imitation jewelery for everyday use. They must keep their heavy gold jewelery for special occasions like weddings or parties and be cautious whenever they wear them. Though mostly women are targeted, even men are falling prey to such crimes. We cannot expect the police to provide 100% vigilance to curb such incidents across the city. I have no idea of what punishments are awarded to those who are caught for gold thefts, but considering the gold prices, it has become an easy way of making money, and anyone who wears gold — be it men or women — becomes an easy target for the criminals. Self-restraint is the best measure to avoid being a victim of gold theft. — Jubel D’Cruz, Dombivili

hree tests will be conducted in an academic year so as to improve the quality of education in state board schools, the Maharashtra government on Thursday said. State Education Minister Vinod Tawde during the Question Hour in the Legislative Council said of the three tests, one will be on the lines of common board exam. Tawde said the RTE (Right to Education) Act has been misinterpreted due to which a number of schools have stopped conducting tests. A query was raised by Congress MLC Husnabano Khalife on the "declining" quality of education in governmentrun school, citing chief reason to be that some schools stopped conducting exams for classes I-VIII as per norms under RTE. "We are planning to conduct three tests a year. Two would be internal tests and one basic test. This is to understand quality of the education imparted to the students. We will help schools to improve their performance

by taking appropriate measures," he said. The minister also clarified that the schools would be issued instructions in this regard, reports PTI. "The RTE has not said anything about not conducting exams. It has asked not to fail wards and promote them in the next class. However, it is also mentioned that schools should give additional coaching to weak students. If there is misunderstanding about schools not conducting exams, we will send them instructions," Tawde said. Khalife also asked about parameters while concluding on quality of education and if the government was planning to re-start the exams. Later, speaking with media, the minister said the basic test announced will be on the lines of board exams and would be common for students of all schools. "The three tests would be different from the mid-term and final exams. The basic test would be conducted in the beginning of session in June. A random survey would

also be conducted to know the quality of education," Tawde said. While answering to another query on recent complaints about text books being sold to scrap dealers, Tawde said that an inquiry will conducted into all such complaints. "An initial probe has been conducted. The books sold to the scrap dealer were new and not used. After probing the matter, we came to know that these were additional books taken from the government after showing false figure of the number of students by some schools so that teachers' jobs are safe. But we are going to conduct an inquiry of the issue across the state," he said. He has announced action under the Copyright Act against a movie poster of film 'Haramkhor' that has copied Balbharati text book's cover page. The issue was raised by MLC Vikram Kale who asked the government to take action against the movie producer and director.

Continued from pg1 « south Mumbai offered her 'Dahi misal' and 'Vada paav' as a form of protest. It may be recalled that noted columnist Shobhaa De had kicked off a controversy by tweeting about the government's decision to make it mandatory for multiplex owners to show Marathi movies in prime time yesterday. As Sena and RPI-A cadres staged protests over her remarks,

in a sarcastic tweet she said “Another morcha coming up at 4 pm. Wonder what tea time snack they will bring with them?”. She further remarked “Dahi misal and Vada paav are my favourites, looking forward to enjoy it”. In another tweet she scoffed at rumours of her leaving Mumbai. She added “I am a proud Maharashtrian, I love Mumbai, I am a Mumbaikar. Why should I leave my city? I'm not afraid of anything”. Meanwhile RPI-A cadres too joined in the protest and trooped with snacks to De's residence at Cuffe Parade. “Today at tea time Shobhaa De will have Maharashtrian snacks like poha, vada paav, misal, etc. I hope she will like it” remarked RPI-A leader and MP Ramdas Athawale. Tawde disclosed that the multiplex owners have agreed to show 124 shows of Marathi movies during the prime time duration. Speaking to newspersons

later president of Marathi Movie Producers Association and actor Vijay Patkar agreed that the time slot decided by the government suits the Marathi producers as they can draw the students and women audience to the theatres at that time. He added that the Marathi film producers were unhappy with the morning time slot as they could not generate revenue. Patkar further disclosed that in the last two years the Marathi film industry has seen its revenue jump from Rs.40 crore to Rs.400 crore. Moreover, four Marathi films have bagged national awards which no other language films could have won. Speaking to news persons here, Multiplex owners association president and chairman of Inox multiplex Deepak Ashar termed the government decision as a fair deal and also welcomed the government's decision to set up a dispute redressal committee.

fondue Cheesy... chocolate-y... If the mere thought of hot, stringy fondue makes your mouth water, this article is for you! Dev Goswami & Sara Shah tell you about the origins of fondue, types available and what cheese to use for classic versions of this sinful dish. They also bring you tips to help you to throw your own fondue party

D

o you dream of crusty bits of bread dripping in hot, stringy cheese? This European dish is easy to prepare, delicious and makes for a great sharing treat at an intimate gathering. Here we tell you more about the history of fondue, eating etiquette and what cheese and bread you should use for a classic version. Take a look — and then throw your own fondue party with our great tips!

The hisTory oF Fondue While many believe that fondue is a relatively new culinary innovation that originated in 1950, the origins of fondue are even older. In fact, there several accounts that point to Homer’s epic The Iliad, (believed to have been created between 760 and 710 B.C.), where Song XI had a recipe for fondue that spoke of a mixture of grated goat cheese, Pramnos wine and white flour. Early historical accounts suggest that fondue was peasant food and was meant to be a good way to use hard cheese and leftover bread. Interestingly, it is believed that the word fondue originated from the French verb fondre, which means to melt. >> Make sure not to touch the fondue fork with your lips or teeth to avoid being scalded!

The 17th century saw some of the earliest printed recipes for fondue, which originated in a region that is believed to be part of Switzerland today. These early recipes used eggs along with Gruyere, which is a cheese that to this date is part of the traditional Swiss fondue. The preparation, which included adding melted cheese to eggs and then scrambling them, reads almost like a cheese soufflé and is unlike the fondue we are used to, which do not include egg in any form. Fondue as we know it today, emerged in the early 20th century. One of the first modern recipes is believed to be in Madame Saint-Agne’s cookbook La Bonne Cuisine, which was published in 1927. Surprisingly, the cookbook is French, not Swiss. Since then, fondue recipes began to gain popularity, with 1950 considered to be an important point in the history of this preparation, when chef Konrad Egil of the Chalet Swiss Restaurant in New York, created what we know today as oil-based fondue (see ‘Types of fondue’ to find out more), which includes dipping meat in boiling oil till it is cooked. In the ’60s and ’70s, fondue parties became extremely popular in America with varieties

>> You can dip bread, vegetables and even sea food in a fondue such as only-cheese fondue courses or those that included both cheese and meat. Around the mid ’60s, dessert fondue, which included dipping fruit, marshmallows or small cookies in melted chocolate, gained popularity. While fondue isn’t as popular as it used to be, it is one of the last surviving communal culinary experiences — and it looks like it’s here to stay.

Types oF Fondue Fondue doesn’t have to be limited to cheese or chocolate. There are essentially four different preparations, all of which can be classified as fondue. Take a look. n Cheese: The classic and most popular

version, this includes a bowl of boiling hot cheese, typically two types. Most variations of fondue use a hint of garlic to add extra flavour and some kind of flour in order to prevent the cheese from curdling. Cheese fondue is eaten with bread. n Broth or bouillon: Fondue may not be

the first word that comes to your mind when you see a simmering pot of broth, but the technique is pretty similar. Believed to have been invented by Mongolian warriors, broth fondue contains less calories than cheese fondue and includes pieces of vegetables such as potatoes as well as seafood, which are cooked in a simmering pot of broth. n oil fondue: Oil fondue may not be

common in Mumbai, but it’s pretty popular across the world. Oil fondue has the same set-up as their cheese counterparts, with the only difference being that the hot cheese is replaced with hot oil and the bread is replaced with meats, seafood or vegetables. These are then dipped into the oil till they are cooked. Sometimes, the meat or vegetables are coated with batter in order to ensure more flavour. continued on pg 14 «

Breads pairings You can use almost any kind of bread you want with a cheese fondue. The sky is the limit! Even stale bread tastes better when it is dipped in hot, melted cheese. But, if you want to create the perfect fondue, here are a few options to choose from. n French baguette: Distinguished by its

length and crustiness, this bread is the most common bread used for a fondue. You don’t even need to toast it. Just cut it up into cubes and you are good to go.

n Focaccia: Similar to pizza dough, focaccia is

round and flat and is topped with garlic and herbs. Why is it so great for fondue? Well, the herbs work wonders with the cheese to give you an absolutely divine experience!

n Brioche: Brioche is more of a French pastry

than a bread, but since it is high in butter and egg, when it’s paired with cheese, the bread is rich and scrumptious. Toasting it before it’s served will make it taste even better. >> Brioche tastes delicious dipped in fondue

about this sinful fondue. Chocolate is melted in the fondue pot, which is then used as a dip for fresh fruit or marshmallows. For a burst flavour, you can also add spices or liqueur to the chocolate.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 2015 >> Good quality cheese and a wide variety of bitesized treats will make your fondue party a success

Fondue etiquette Since fondue is essentially a communal dish, there is a certain etiquette that you need to follow when you’re eating it. Once you spear a piece of bread and dip it into the cheese, you need to hold it over the pot in order to let the excess cheese drip off and to ensure that you don’t get any cheese on the table. When it comes to eating, you have to make sure that you don’t touch the fondue fork with your teeth or your lips, since you’re going to be dipping it back into the cheese. If you find this hard to do, another slightly cumbersome way to eat it is to place the bread on a plate and use a second fork to slide the bread off the fondue fork. When you’re not using the fondue fork, it should be placed on your plate and not in the pot. When you’re eating oil fondue, spear the meat with the fondue fork and place it into the oil till the meat is cooked. Take it out of the pot, place the fork on your plate and use another fork to slide the meat off before eating it.

Best cheeses For a Fondue Cheese plays the most important role in a fondue and so, the better the cheese is, the better the fondue will taste. A fondue usually includes two kinds of cheese, and it’s crucial that you choose the right kind if you’re throwing a fondue party. Take a look at a few popular varieties that you can pick from.

Gruyère cheese A hard, yellow cheese, Gruyère is named after the town of Gruyères in Switzerland. It has a sweet and salty flavour profile, but the taste can vary depending on the age of the cheese. Also known as Le Gruyère, this is the cheese that adds creaminess and nutty hint to a cheese fondue. To get the best out of this cheese, pick one that has been aged for five months to a year — you can tell whether it has been if the cheese has tiny cracks and a slightly grainy texture.

emmentaler Think cartoons and cheese, and the first thing that comes to mind is Tom & Jerry, and that typical block of cheese with holes. Well, the cheese that you saw then was Emmentaler. Commonly known as Emmental, this is a yellow, medium-hard cheese that originated around Emmental, Switzerland. It is produced with the help of three different types of bacteria. The holes that you see are produced by one of the bacteria that consumes lactic acid and releases carbon dioxide. You can tell that a fondue has been made using this cheese when it has a savoury flavour, although Emmental isn’t as sharp as other kinds of cheese. Emmentaler and Gruyère are a classic fondue combination that you can’t go wrong with.

chedder cheese Ah! The most common of the lot, cheddar cheese originated in Cheddar, Somerset, UK, and is a hard, pale cheese that has a somewhat sharp taste. It is fairly easy to melt, which is why it is used in fondue.

Fontina cheese Essentially an Italian cheese, this is made solely from cow’s milk and is available throughout the year. The pungent-smelling cheese has an intense, woody flavour. You can pick up Le Gruyère, Emmantaler, and cheddar cheese from Nature’s Basket outlets or HyperCITY, Malad (w)

throwinG a Fondue party Gorging on delicious morsels that are dipped in hot, bubbling cheese can be quite an expensive affair in Mumbai. But, you need not empty your pockets for that occasional cheesy treat. Bring out the cheese and throw your own cheese fondue party! You can pair your fondue with as many different morsels as you like and call a few friends over for a get-

pick the morsels Remember that while the cheese may be the star of a fondue, if you don’t have enough dipping food on hand, your guests are going to be left hungry and dissatisfied. You’ll also need to make sure that you have different types of morsels on offer, so that you can accommodate a diverse range of palettes. Different types of bread and cut raw vegetables are good options. Chef Ajay tells us, “For cheese fondue, bread pairs the best and always compliments the dish. You can pick from basic breads including foccacia, brioche and French baguette. You can also have raw vegetables such as broccoli, zucchini, yellow

the traditional Fondue There’s no one traditional fondue recipe — in fact, every canton of Switzerland has their own traditional style of fondue. However, a fondue generally consists of two types of cheese; most types of fondue use Gruyère and Emmenthaler, both of which compliment each other perfectly — without either one, the mixture would either be too bland or too sharp. White wine is usually added to the cheese in order to protect them from the direct heat, while flour or cornstarch prevents the cheese from separating. Fondue highlights the cheese and generally does not use any other flavouring except garlic, which is rubbed inside the pot to add a touch of additional flavouring. Fondue was traditionally cooked in an earthen pot called a caquelon. However, today, you will also find fondue pots made from ceramic or enamelled iron. No matter what it is made of, what makes a fondue pot special is that it ensures an even distribution of heat and also allows this heat to be retained. The fondue mixture is heated on a normal burner and is then transferred to your table and placed over an alcohol burner or hot plate in order to ensure that mixture stays in a liquid form.

squash, baby carrot and celery as well as cooked vegetables and meats.” Also remember that the pieces of bread or vegetables should be bite-sized so that they do not break apart and fall into the dip or worse, on to your floor!

Make a statement with trendy fondue accessories and cutlery that make the whole experience fun. Also, keep plenty of tissues at hand as dipping and swirling the cheese can be a messy affair. Provide your guests with long fondue forks that won’t require them to put their hand all the way into the pot. Using disposable forks will make cleaning up an easier task.

place it in a pot

Fondue Basics

You don’t need to cook your fondue in large pots, which are not only expensive, but are also impracticable in small, home kitchens. Pick up small fondue pots, which have a small burner attached underneath. All you need to do light a tea candle and you are good to go. You can strategically place these pots around your living room and make sure that your guests don’t have to fight their way through a crowd of hungry fondue lovers. “Make sure that the pot is made from cast iron, ceramic or porcelain as these

That’s pretty much it when it comes to throwing fondue party! However, Juliano does have a few suggestions that will ensure your fondue party is a success. He explains, “Instruct your guests not to put the fondue forks straight into their mouths. Rather, they should take it from the pot and transfer it on to a plate. Also, make sure that the white wine that you pair the fondue with is not a young, acidic wine as it can mess with your guests’ stomachs. Keep the fondue on a low flame at all times to prevent curdling.”

Fashion that works Kaaryah.com is a newly launched website dedicated to formal wear for women. anindra Siqueira gleans over the website to tell you whether it’s worth shopping at

K

aaryah.com is a shopping portal that plays host to nothing but formal work attire for women — in that way, the brand is very specific in its target audience. The online store has been up and running for some time now, so I logged on to take a look at the website and see whether it’s worth your time, especially if you’re looking for chic work attire. One of the USPs of the website is that it caters to 18 different sizes for women, based on not one, but three standard measurement scales. And while other sites have clothing for women in four or five sizes, Kaaryah.com has it in chiefly six sizes — 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12. It categorises sizes using the three measurements — that of the bust, waist and hips — but also suggests an additional dimension (petit, regular or curvy), which probably accounts for the 18 sizes. The good thing about the online store is that it has a wide variety of clothing and most of it is pretty stylish. There is a rather pleasingly large selection when it comes to its range of tops and trousers, and you will find that

the variety of skirts, dresses and jackets is also decent. But, the website layout isn’t great. The homepage is a bit cluttered and the product pages display ‘related products’ right next to the product you’re looking at — if you’re accustomed to shopping for clothing online, this feature will take some getting used to. However, because of the large images on the listing pages (when you browse by product, collection or if you initiate a search), navigating through the website is a charm. Something that I thought would have made shopping more convenient is if there were multiple product views when you move your mouse over the images. Other online clothing stores include this feature, and it makes shopping a bit easier. With it, you don’t have to visit every product page to see more of a particular product; you have that right where you are. Sorting options are limited, but searching for items is easy enough. You probably won’t need intricate sort commands when you’re shopping on kaaryah.com — the bare-bones sorting options that have been provided will do.

The prices of clothing on the website vary considerably — while they start at around `600 (after discount), they can go all the way up to `6,000 (about `3,500 after discount). However, we think that most of the items are worth their price tags. The site also features Paytm payment — definitely a plus point — which means you can make purchases using your Paytm virtual wallet. And, they have a seemingly liberal return policy too. The website will take back items no questions asked and will even pick up the item of clothing you wish to return — at no cost to you if they deem the return just. All in all, the website is a great place to shop for classy, formal wear, if you don’t mind the slightly clumsy layout that is. However, since browsing through the extensive collection is easy — the array of options itself is a huge bonus — and the clothing is among the best we’ve seen, you should check out the website if you’re looking to dress fashionably at work, even though prices are not all that low. Strolling around a large warehouse housing sections designed to look like living rooms that are filled with sofa sets is the best way to shop for couches! Dev Goswami tells you more about newly opened Couch Potato

L

ocated in a large basement under the Audi Showroom on Andheri Link Road, Couch Potato is a new home décor store devoted to — you guessed it — couches! Lucky enough to have procured a massive space (which has been utilised well), the store houses strategically placed sofa sets arranged to look like they would in your living room. Complete with coffee tables and carpets, browsing through the well-designed Couch Potato makes selecting merchandise a breeze. The first thing that struck me was the variety on offer. When I visited, the store had around 20-25 sofa sets on display, each sporting a different design — from the fabric and colours to the shape and structure. Apart from the usual suspects (black, classy couches and maroon ones with a royal touch), the store also had a range of attractive, youthful colours such as yellow, violet and orange. There was something that I felt was missing though — there was a lack of designs with visible wooden frames. Now I’m not really a fan of couches that have visible frames — and it seems as though the store isn’t either, with just a few designs that offer a mix of naked wooden legs and fabric options. However, for a store that promises to provide a wide variety of sofa sets, this is something that should be part of their catalogue. While I was expecting to see a good range of couches, I was also impressed by their range of centre tables. Most of them were simply designed and made to match the couches that they were paired with. This may be a problem if you’re looking to buy a centre table to go with

>> Couch Potato has a wide range of sofas, as well as centre tables

your sofa, because they look so good at the store that anything other than the couch against which they are placed can leave you disappointed. Couch Potato also has a decent range of cushions, all of which are well-designed and perfect for daily use, but nothing out of the ordinary. Their range of paintings, on the other hand, is quite impressive and will add a unique touch to your wall décor. The store also does customisations (to an extent) — they can play around with the fabric and size of their designs, but they stop short of building a new couch from scratch. Their defence? They prefer to stick to doing what they do best. And, having seen their collection, I can’t argue with that! Prices for the couches start at `99,000 and go

>> Kaaryah.com has a great selection of stylish work clothing

up to `3.5 lakhs, which is a bit steep, but the well-finished designs are worth the price. Their centre tables cost about `25,000, while you can pick up cushions for around `1,000. The paintings are priced from `8,500 onwards. Couch Potato is a good place to shop at if you’re decorating a new home or renovating. As far as sofa sets are concerned, they are miles ahead of most home décor outlets in the city. With a single-minded focus on couches, they will not disappoint. >> Derek Vincent Smith is the proprietor of the Pretty Lights Music label

electronics Midival Punditz is releasing their fourth album, Light, which mixes their signature electronica tunes with Indian folk music. Dev Goswami speaks to Gaurav Raina from the Delhi-based duo to find out more

I

ndian folk music has been gaining popularity — folk artists are in vogue and interesting trends have been cropping up over the past year. Several mainstream artists have started incorporating elements of Indian folk into their productions. Light, the new album from decade-old band Midival Punditz (Tapan Raj & Guarav Raina) is a great example. n Tell us about your fourth studio album!

Bright Beats If you enjoy electronic music, you’ve probably heard about Derek Vincent Smith a.k.a Pretty Lights. Yamini Walia caught up with him before his first performance in the city

D

erek Vincent Smith, who goes by the stage name Pretty Lights, rose to popularity after performing at music festivals such as the Ultra Music Festival, Nocturnal Festival and Evolve Festival. He enthralled audiences in New Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai for the first time as part of VH1 Supersonic and MTV Indies Spiro. After witnessing his performance in the city (and it was absolutely mind-boggling!), I’m an even bigger fan. In an interview, which we conducted before the show, he tells us more about his music and his trip to India.

It’s been conceptualised to be presented live with a full band — the same way as in the studio version. The album has strong roots in various styles of Indian folk music and also our signature style of electronica. We have collaborated with talented artists from across India to showcase various folk styles such as Carnatic, Rajasthani and UP. These artists include Malini Awasthi, Papon, Kutle Khan, flautist Pandit Ajay Prasanna and Baiju Dharmajan, among others. We’ve played at a lot of music festivals and are inspired by the theatrics. That led us to conceptualise the album as a full-fledged show, where the tracks were dramatic enough to create dynamics within a live performance. n When it came to Indian influences in Light, you chose

folk over classical. Why? The sound that we were trying to achieve needed an Indian folk influence. Indian folk has a rustic and unfinished beauty to it, which we wanted to tap into. We have always had great admiration for the folk singers that we’ve worked with, and we wanted to explore that.

>> Pretty Lights, performed in Mumbai for the first time, as part of MTV Indies Spiro

n Indian folk music has become quite popular, with several

artists featuring them in their songs, mixes and performances. Do you think the trend is here to stay? I think Indian folk music has been neglected in many ways and people are now recognising it in mainstream and other genres. I think that it is amazing music and needs respect and love. n You’ve worked on the music for a number of films and

n Is this your first trip to India? What

are you looking forward to the most? Yes, this is my first visit to India — I’ve been thinking about it for a long time. I don’t know a lot about the music of this country, but as a vinyl junkie and crate digger, I have been exposed to a lot of old Ravi Shankar records and have amassed a collection of his work. I am interested in learning about the current beat producer scene in Mumbai. And, by learning about, I mean hearing as much of the music as I can. I have met several producers and DJs and I’m connecting with the music even now — whatever I’ve heard has got me excited. n Tell us about your performances

in India. The concerts/ parties in India have been at the forefront of my thoughts. My intention is to put on a show that is unique and fun for me on stage and also one that exemplifies the best and most diverse songs and styles within Pretty Lights’ body of work. The visual aspect of the live performance is also hugely important to the experience. The visuals are all about synchronisation

of rhythm, emotion and energy between the music, the audience and the sensory stimulation.

certain songs and genres so cool and pleasing to me and tried to imagine how I could combine those elements into a new sound and a new style.

n How does it feel to be part of MTV

Indies Spiro? Well, it’s an interesting concept that we are really excited to be part of. We will also be performing in Delhi and Pune for VH1 Supersonic n What has been the biggest

achievement of your career to date? I believe I am still to achieve that (winks). n Where do you derive inspiration

from for your music? As I began to understand that I wanted to make music as a career and more as a lifestyle, I started thinking about what it would mean and how it would be like to create original music. I listen to a lot of music now, and listened to even more music before Pretty Lights took off. I would think about what made

n What are your future plans?

I am so excited to be working on new projects, a new album, multiple singles and episodic/ cinematic music videos. My next single will sound (in large part) like my experience in India. I’m working on a song here. I always want to challenge myself with new projects and push forward artistically, aesthetically and, now especially, how I think people experience art and music. There are so many exciting possibilities where independent artists can break the mould of the traditional music industry. A huge part of what makes my new projects original and cutting edge will be the way they are presented and released. *The Pretty Lights concert took place on April 4 at Mehboob Studios, as part of MTV Indies Spiro.

have collaborated with several musical stalwarts. Tell us about your most memorable experience. I think as far as films go, we collaborated with Karsh Kale on a few projects and that was very inspirational and fun. Our interactions with Shankar Ehsaan Loy were also pleasant. The trio has a deep respect for what we do and we share the same for them. n Tell us about your most memorable gig or performance.

I think our most memorable gig will always be sharing the stage with Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Sultan Khan, Karsh Kale and Bill Laswell, at the Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco in 2001, in front of 25,000 people. It was truly a magical start to our career as musicians.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 2015

TOP VIEW

Forecasts for most emerging and developing economies are slightly worse than last year, with lower commodity prices one of the main drivers. While they still represent more than two thirds of global growth this year, there is tremendous diversity within this group. For example: India is a growth bright spot; China is slowing but growing more sustainably; Sub-Saharan Africa continues to perform strongly; Russia, on the other hand, is experiencing economic difficulties; Brazil is also stagnating. And many parts of the Middle East are beset by political and economic turmoil. So we should not think of emerging economies as just one single group. Each country faces very specific circumstances, some of them easier, some of them more difficult.

Moody’s Raises Outlook For 15 Banks, FIs To ‘Positive’ By A Business Reporter

C

redit rating agency Moody’s has revised upwards the outlook to positive, from stable, for 12 state-owned banks and financial institutions including SBI, PNB, Canara Bank, REC and PFC. It also revised to positive the outlook on the long- term ratings of private sector lenders — ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank. “We have affirmed the longterm ratings and changed the outlook to positive from stable for 12 Indian government- owned financial institutions,” the US-based agency said.“The rating actions (on 12 public-sector entities) are in line with our affirmation of India’s Baa3 rating,” it said. Earlier in the day, Moody’s raised India’s credit rating outlook to ‘positive’ and said an upgrade in its sovereign rating is also possible in the next 12-18 months. India’s sovereign rating currently stands at ‘Baa3’, the lowest investment grade — just a notch above ‘junk’ status. The 12 state-owned financial institutions include State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Canara Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Power Finance Corp, and Rural Electrification Corp. The rating agency said an improvement in the government’s own creditworthiness, as measured by its sovereign rating, has the potential to lift the supported ratings for the financial institutions. “The assignment of a positive outlook on the sovereign’s and the financial institutions’ ratings signals a higher probability of the sovereign providing support to the financial institutions in times of stress,” it said. Reacting to the Rating Upgrade, the finance ministry believes that it reaffirms faith In Indian Economy. .”Moody’s decision continues to reaffirm that rating agencies,

global investors and our own domestic businesses have faith in India’s growth outlook and our financial strength as a sovereign,” Minister of State for Finance, Jayant Sinha told reporters after the upgrade, saying that the measures taken by the policymakers would enhance economic strength. The rating agency also said that it could upgrade India’s rating in 12-18 months time if such measures propel growth. “The macroeconomic situation has improved dramatically in last 10 months, obviously due to action that we have taken as far as fiscal policy is concerned,” Sinha said. Reiterating that India has benefited from declining global oil price, Sinha said, “So those macro-economic factors are very much in our favour. We have to work on (them) to ensure

that sector-wise growth picks up.” Commenting on Moody’s action, Revenue SecretaryShaktikanta Das said it will increase and improve confidence of investors in India. “An important component of this positive outlook is the whole change in the taxation environment which is taking place over the last several months...A number of steps have been taken to position a non-adversarial tax administration,” Das said. Meanwhile, Finance Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi said this development affirms the positive programmes and policies announced in the Budget.”I hope the next stage would be up-gradation of the ratings itself,” Mehrishi said.

Revenue growth to slip to 2.5% on a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis in the March 2015 quarter. However, on the profitability front, a marginal uptick in EBITDA margins is foreseen, says CRISIL Research By A Business Reporter

I

ndia Inc.’s revenue growth is expected “to slip to a 7-quarter low of 2.5% on a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis in the March 2015 quarter. The weak performance of investmentlinked sectors and low global commodity prices will more than offset the moderate growth anticipated in export-oriented sectors and consumer-driven sectors. In the preceding quarter as well, revenue growth was a tepid 5.4%” says CRISIL Research. On the profitability front, though, it foresees a marginal uptick in EBITDA margins” Says Prasad Koparkar, Senior Director, CRISIL Research, “The year started on a promising note, with

revenue growing by 12.8% in Q1FY15. However, growth has decelerated in subsequent quarters with Q4 likely to show the lowest growth. Steel, petrochemicals, and man-made fibres manufacturers will be impacted by the rapid slide in global commodity prices. Sluggish growth in volumes (2% y-o-y) would constrain the revenue growth of cement companies, while capital goods manufacturers are likely to see a further 13% y-o-y fall in revenues. In aggregate, revenue growth for corporate India is likely to end up at ~ 7% in FY15.” Domestic consumption and export-oriented sectors are likely to outperform but, here too, sectors heavily dependent on rural consumption such as motorcycles, tractors, and FMCG have been facing severe pressure on volumes as unseasonal weather conditions and slow growth in crop prices have dented farm incomes. This would impact topline growth for companies in these sectors. For example, we forecast FMCG companies to report revenue growth of 8-9% in Q4FY15, down from 14% growth in the first half of the year. Telecom companies have not been as severely impacted by subdued rural consumption; spike in data usage in

urban areas is expected to propel 11% growth in their topline. Other sectors likely to report doubledigit topline growth include IT services, pharmaceuticals, and auto components. CRISIL expects aggregate EBITDA margins to improve by 50-80 bps yo-y in Q4FY15. Ajay Srinivasan, Director, CRISIL Research, said, “We expect cement, telecom, petrochemicals and FMCG to outperform on the profitability front. EBITDA margins of cement companies are likely to rise by 230 bps due to higher realisations and reduction in power costs. Surge in data revenues and control over marketing costs will boost margins of telecom companies by 180 bps. Despite pressure on topline, margins of petrochemical players will widen by 125-150 bps due to improvement in polyester feedstock spreads. On the other hand, EBIDTA margins for steel, capital goods, fertilisers, IT services and pharmaceuticals sectors will decline. Steel players will be hit by lower realisations, whereas weak utilisation levels will impact the capital goods sector. Fertiliser players will bear the brunt of higher raw material cost in complex fertilisers and shutdown of urea plants.”

Expert Panel For Investment Of NPS Corpus Into PE, VC Funds By A Business Reporter

ment," he said. The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority regulates NPS, which is subscribed by employees of both central and state governments, besides private institutions and unorganised sectors. "Right now we have investments in government securities, corporate bonds and equity (as investment instruments). What we will do is to put only a small amount, as risk is also high," Contractor said in an Assocham event here. He said PRFDA is envisaging a phased kind of roll out of the new products in which pension industry can invest. "A lot of thinking is going on about investment into private equity and venture capital," he said, adding that the the Bajpai committee report was submitted day before yesterday. "What it deals with is the current investment pattern that NPS has been following. The fund managers, the fee struc-

ture, the commission structure, all those. We will put it up on the board of--the recommendations we think are worth implementing," he said. The recommendations will be put before the board by next month or later, Contractor said. That apart, he said PFRDA is readying itself along with banks to roll out the Atal Pension Yojana (APY), as announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in 2015-16 Budget. "We are right now in the process of readying ourselves along with the banks to roll out this product on June 1." The APY will be focused on all citizens in the unorganised sector who join the NPS, and are not members of any statutory social security scheme. Under APY, subscribers would receive fixed pension of Rs 1,000 per month, Rs 2,000 per month, Rs 3,000 per month, Rs 4,000 per month, Rs 5,000 per month, at the age of 60 years, depending on their contributions.

Predatory Air Fares Need To Be Regulated

Sharma replied in the affirmative. "In principle, I feel there should be some regulation on the prices at both ends. Of course we will not totally regulate prices but some regulation has to be there," he said. Sharma said the matter needs to be discussed with stakeholders and others before a decision is arrived at. He was speaking on the sidelines of a function related to GMR Aviation Academy. Last month, he had told the Rajya Sabha that air fares are not fixed by the government and are determined by the airlines "based on interplay of market forces".

A

n expert committee on investment guidelines for National Pension System has recommended diversifying investment portfolio of NPS scheme into private equity and venture capital funds, PFRDA Chairman Hemant Contractor said yesterday. Currently, NPS funds can be invested only in Government Securities, corporate bonds and equities. The total assets managed under NPS are about Rs 82,000 crore, while private sector contribution is just Rs 5,000 crore. Contractor said PFRDA is "positively looking" into NPS investing a part of corpus into private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC), as recommended by the G N Bajpai committee. "What they are proposing is a phased kind of transition from the direct regime of investment to a targeted kind of investment regime. It is a kind of diversifying the invest-

FOR HER FILM’S CREW

T

he cast and crew of films often get bored of the food they get on sets. More often than not stars bring their home food to the sets much to everyone's delight. Salman Khan is famous for supplying biryani from his house which is well loved and extremely popular among his crew. Now, seems likeVidya Balan is taking a leaf out of his book and turning caterer on the sets of her film 'Hamari Adhuri Kahani'. A few crew members fell sick on during the

film's schedule so Vidya decided to bring food cooked from her home not only for herself but for everyone else as well so that the entire crew can eat healthy. We hear that she has been treating them to wholesome meals as well as cupcakes and sweets. 'Hamari Adhuri Kahani' is based on the true story of Mahesh Bhatt's parents. It is being directed by Mohit Suri and features Emraan Hashmi opposite Vidya Balan in the lead.

Chitrangda sizzles in ‘Gabbar Is Back’ T

he makers of Akshay Kumar starrer 'Gabbar Is Back' recently released a romantic number featuring Akshay and Kareena named 'Teri Meri Kahaani'. The film, which revolves around an anti-corruption hero also features Shruti Haasan and has been

directed by Krish. Hottie Chitrangda Singh will also be featuring in the film in a special dance number. The song's name is “Kundi Mat Khadkao Raja” and Chitrangda has donned an all gold, shimmering ensemble for the song with flaming red lips. She was last seen on the big screen in 2013 in 'I, Me Aur Main'. It's going to be great seeing the 'Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi' actress perform again.

So scary to play a real-life person: Kalki on ‘Margarita’ P

ortraying an actual living person is a task in itself and for Kalki Koechlin it was even more challenging as she plays not just a real-life individual but someone who suffers from cerebral palsy in 'Margarita With A Straw'. The 31-year-old actress has garnered a lot of praise for her role in the Shonali Bose-directed movie which is inspired from the filmmakers' cousin Malini. The movie talks about her struggle with the normal activities in her life. "It was scary of course, the whole disability act. I had to make sure that I pull it off perfectly. There was a lot of pressure. But I knew I had to do justice to my role as it is Shonali and Malini's very personal tale. These two women have been very open to me about their lives. They have let me in and shared their darkest secrets," Kalki told PTI. 'Margarita With A Straw' had its world premiere on September 8, 2014 as part of the Contemporary World Cinema Programme at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The movie later went on to be screened at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia, BFI London Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) and the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF). The film will finally hit theatres on April 17.

Rajesh Shringarpure’s dark act in ‘Guru Dakshina’ Rajesh Shringarpure gained popularity from Marathi films including 'Zenda' and 'Swarajya Marathi Paul Padate Pudhe' and Hindi films like 'Sarkaar Raj' where he did a negative role and 'Murder 3' where he played a cop. In 2012, Rajesh played Waseem, a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agent in John Stockwell-directed 'Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden' which recently premiered in the US prior to the US presidential elections. He has completed shooting for another Hollywood project titled 'Gandhi Of The Month' in which he worked with American actor Harvey Keitel. Rajesh is also working on 'Shortcut Romeo' followed by a crossover film that stars Dev Patel where he plays a villain. Now he is all set to act as a bad man in Kiran Fadnis’s debut film ‘Guru Dakshina’. We spoke to him about his new film. By Sandeep Hattangadi

Yet another negative role? Yes. But it’s a negative role of a Naxalite from Purulia district in Orissa who is passionate about the local dance form 'Chaau' and so he goes to Kolkata where he a joins a dance academy run by Kiran Phadnis and there he gets to meet her daughter played by Suluguna Panigrahi and her

ardent lover played by debutant Rajeev from Kerala. He gets to do all his nefarious activities from the ashram without getting caught. How was it like working on the film? Rajeev is a great guy and we got along very well and Suluguna is a prominent name in Marathi films, so I kind of knew her and she is a sweet girl. Producer director Kiran

Phadnis is a great dancer and as a director she knew exactly what she wanted from her actors and the crew especially the DoP who has given the film a great look. Her sense of music is also very good. She has canned the film in beautiful locales of West Bengal, Sikkim and Mumbai. You are a star in Marathi cinema, yet you do negative

roles in Hindi films? Maybe it’s because of my rugged looks and my role in 'Sarkaar Raj' that my image has become so but I am happy to play the bad guy in Hindi cinema. What are your forthcoming films? Some Marathi films like ‘Yuddh’, ‘Vartamaan’ and a few international projects.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 2015

he first quarter of 2015 has ended, there is something to cheer. Last year, Vikas Bahl‘s Queen was the film of the quarter, this year it has to be Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Sharat Katariya’s charming and utterly original film, with an unconventional plus-sized heroine (Bhumi Pednekar), who makes no effort to get to a fashionable weight. This was a very unusual film coming for the Yash Raj Films banner; another off beat film from that production house was Dibaker Banerjee’sDetective Byomkesh Bakshi. The film was appreciated for its production design, cinematography and performances, though the plot was convoluted and heavy going. Still, Detective Byomkesh Bakshi was a film buff’s film. Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui matched wits in Sriram Ragavan’s dark revenge drama, Badlapur, while Anushka Sharma played the city girl who is confronted with the ugly realities of rural India in Navdeep Singh’s NH 10—the success of both films won appreciation for their stars, and also proved that given the right content, Hindi film audiences do support offbeat films. Another example would be Rahasya which had a surprisingly long run in the cinema when better films give up—perhaps the curiosity about its story based on the sensational Arushi murder case had something to do with it. Unfortunately, many small

Tena Desae turns down another Hollywood film? T ena Desae is the brand new favourite in Hollywood. The actress who was last seen in ‘The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ will now next be seen in a brand new series for Netflix called Sense8. The young actress had committed most of her time to shoot this show, which was incredibly demanding as the shoot took place in over four countries around the world. Not only this Tena, was also offered an incredible part in a movie with Adam Sandler. The film titled ‘Pixels’ is directed by Chris Columbus. The ‘Yeh Faasley’ actress auditioned for a pivotal role and even got through, but her dates for ‘Sense8’ posed a problem and eventually despite trying Tena had to let go of the part. Says Tena, “I auditioned for a cameo, but the dates didn’t work out so I couldn’t actually do it. But I saw the trailer and loved it. I look forward to seeing the movie now.”

Ayushman Khurana and Bhumi Pednekar in Dum Laga Ke Haisha Audiences also sometimes reject the formulaic as the failure of Ab Tak Chhappan 2, Tevar and Alone showed, but if the usual action drama is packaged well and has popular stars, then a film like Baby can deliver at the box-office. Some films like Shamitabh, Roy, Dolly Ki Doli that have stars and were given high-powered promotion did not do as well as expected. Deepa Gahlot The general opinion is that offbeat films made with great even with censors getting effort, just do not have the strict, sex sells, but the flopability to attract audiences. ping of films like Dirty Politics, Good examples would be Khamoshiyan and Hunterrr Qissa, Hawaizaada and Coffee means that there is no predictBloom. ing the mood of the viewer.

RINGSIDE VIEW

The obviously crass films like Barkha and Monsoon didn’t even stand a chance. For the prize for the oddest title, Dilliwali Zalim Girlfriend,Yahan Sabki Lagi Hai and Crazy Cukkad Family could tie up. But the most bizarre and ambitious film of the quarter would be MSG The Messenger of God. The next few weeks have films like Mr X, Margarita With A Straw, Piku, Bombay Velvet and Gabbar Is Back coming up. Looks like a good line up.

POH (MALAYSIA): Already out of the summit clash, a misfiring India had to toil hard to get the better of a lowly Canada 5-3 and register their first win in the ongoing 24th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament. Rupinder Pal Singh (13th minute) and V R Raghunath (32nd) scored through penalty corners before Ramanadeep Singh (46th, 47th) scored two field goals, while Satbir Singh (49th) rounded off the tally with another field strike. For Canada, who are ranked 15th in the world as compared to India's ninth spot, Oliver Scholfield (43rd), Jagdish Gill (49th) and David Jameson (52nd) were the goal getters. Even though India had the better share of possession and ball control, they were far from impressive. For the fourth straight match, the Indians were guilty of missing numerous chances and their fragile backline as usual conceded soft goals. In the presence of two big dragflick exponents in

Raghunath and Rupinder, penalty corners are considered India's strong point, but they cut a sorry figure in this department as well, utilising just two of the eight short corners that came their way today. Besides being new chief coach Paul van Ass' first win after taking charge of the team, the only solace from today's game was the performance of its forwardline, who finally showed some form by scoring three fine

field goals. It was, however, Canada who had the first shy at the goal when they earned the game's first penalty corner in the fifth minute but Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh made double save to deny the opponents. Minutes later India got their first scoring chance but Satbir was denied by the Canadian goalkeeper David Carter. Canada had another penalty corner in the ninth minute and Sreejesh was

India’s weak defence a worry for chief coach Van Ass

IPOH (MALAYSIA): The fragile backline has been Indian men's hockey team's perennial problem and new chief coach Paul van Ass admitted that the defence continues to be his major concern. Out of title reckoning, India had to toil hard today to register a 5-3 win against a lowly Canada, their first in the tournament, in the ongoing Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. The defence continued to

disappoint as India yet again conceded soft goals to allow 15th ranked Canada to pump in three goals. "What worries me is the defence. The defence worried me before I came to India. That is one of my first concerns. Our defence is too bad. I think we lost a lot of games in the end phase earlier as well as in this tournament," Van Ass said after registering his first win with the Indian team.

once again forced to come to the action to keep John Smythe's flick away. Soon India mounted continuous raids into the Canada citadel and in the process earned three quick penalty corners, the last of which was converted by Rupinder in the 13th minute. India secured another short corner in the second quarter but this time Rupinder was slow to get off the block and from the resultant rebound he shot over. But just two minutes after halftime, India doubled their lead when Raghunath neatly converted his side's fifth short corner. The scoreline should have been much bigger for India had they not wasted the penalty corners that came their way. In the third quarter, India earned three more penalty corners but wasted all the opportunities. Canada stunned India when Scholfield scored from a counter attack in the 43rd minute with a powerful reverse hit, which Sreejesh had no answer to. It was a goalfest for the spectators in the fourth and final quarter as Ramandeep, who was off colour till today's match, scored two goals in the span of two minutes to make the scoreline 4-1 in favour of India. Ramandeep first pushed home after he was set up by Nikkin Thimmaiah in the 46th minute and then he neatly deflected in a Gurbaj Singh's cross from the right in the next minute. Canada pulled one back in the 49th minute through a penalty corner conversion by Gill before Satbir extended India's lead guiding home a pass from Manpreet Singh. But it was not the end, as India conceded yet another soft goal when Jameson tapped in from close range after an array of defenders failed to stop Gabriel Ho-Garcia's cross. India will next play their toughest match of the tour-

Saina drops a place to World No. 2 Kashyap enters quarters, Prannoy stuns Jorgensen again NEW DELHI: Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal's stay at the top of the table was cut short as she dropped a place to be World No. 2 in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released. The Olympic bronzemedallist had reached a career best World No.1 last week but owing to her loss in the Malaysia Open Super

Series Premier semifinals, Saina dropped a position in the list. She lost to the reigning Olympic champion Li Xuerui, who regained the top spot. The shuttler from Hyderabad became the first Indian woman to reach the numero uno position after winning the India Open title last month. She has currently opted out of the ongoing Singapore Open to prepare for the gruelling season ahead. Meanwhile, P V Sindhu, who has not been playing for some time due to an injury,

INGAPORE: Commonwealth Games champion Parupalli Kashyap advanced to the quarterfinals of Singapore Open but it was H S Prannoy, who hogged the limelight today with his straight-game demolition of world no. 2 Jan O Jorgensen in the men's singles competition here. Kashyap, who had reached a career-best world no. 6 in 2013, staved off the challenge of fourth seed Son Wan Ho of Korea 21-15 22-20, before Prannoy scripted another giant-killing act of sending Denmark's Jorgensen out of

the tournament for the second time on a trot. World No. 14 Prannoy, who had defeated Jorgensen at the India Super Series in New Delhi last month, notched up a 21-16 21-8 win over the second seed to reach the quarters. The Indian had beaten the Dane at the Japan Open in 2013 as well. Kashyap, who today rose two places to world no. 15, will next take on France's Brice Leverdez, who saw off another Dane Hans-Kristian Vittinghun 21-13 19-21 21-18 during his prequarterfinal match.

Prannoy, on the other hand, will clash with world no. 10 Kento Momota of Japan today. However, it was a bad day in office for World No. 4 Indian Kidambi Srikanth, who suffered a 1521 20-22 loss to Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand in another match. Delhi Commonwealth Games champion pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, too, could not get past third seeds Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang (F) of China, going down fighting 22-24 18-21 in a women's doubles match.

KINGS XI PUNJAB FACE RAJASTHAN RCB captain Virat Kohli at a practice session at Eden Garden in Kolkata on Thursday.

ROYALS AT NEW HOME GROUND

P

une: Kings XI Punjab would look to adapt quickly to their new 'home ground' when they lock horns with former champions Rajasthan Royals in their campaign opener in the Indian Premier League (IPL) here today. The Royals, who have three 2015 World Cup winners in Shane Watson, Steven Smith and Jame Faulkner, would look to Chris Morris, their costliest buy at Rs 1.4 crore, for a positive start. Morris was bought for his all-round skills and will be expected to partner Faulkner in that department. With the ball, Morris produced a record performance

Kamran lashes out at Pakistan team management

Karachi: Experienced wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal's scathing attack on the Pakistan team management could hurt his chances of making a comeback to international cricket. Kamran lashed out at the team management for making his younger brother Umar Akmal a sacrificial lamb. Umar was dropped for the coming tour to Bangladesh by the new selection committee earlier this week while Ahmed Shehzad was restricted to the T20 squad after head coach Waqar Younis and captain Misbah-ul-Haq apparently complained about the behavior of both youngsters during the World Cup. According to a report in Dawn news Kamran said in an interview that Umar's career was being "destroyed" for noncricketing reasons. "Umar has always put the cause of the team ahead of any

for Lions in the Ram Slam T20 last year. But a big challenge for Royals would be adapting to a new home after their actual home ground of Jaipur was taken off the roster owing to the dispute in the Rajasthan Cricket Association. With captain Watson and Stuart Binny playing allround roles as well, chief coach Paddy Upton feels Morris' inclusion gives Royals a lot of options. They have also brought in two leg-spinners in Dinesh Salunkhe and Pardeep Sahu, and could play decisive roles for the team in this format. Smith, meanwhile, comes in to the IPL on the back of an awe-inspiring performance

in the year gone by. He has scored 2096 runs in 31 international matches across all formats at a brilliant average of 69.86, which includes eight hundreds. During this period, he captained Australia's Test side and was their leading runscorer (402 at an average of 67, including an unbeaten fifty in the final) in a winning World Cup campaign. Kings XI Punjab captain George Bailey, who did not get to spend much time in the middle last season, aggregated 257 runs at a strike rate of 135.26. But it was Glenn Maxwell - 552 runs at a strike rate of 187.75 - who was the team's trump card in the pre-

Hazlewood pulls out of IPL after hectic summer Melbourne: Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood has pulled out of the ongoing Indian Premier League after a hectic summer of cricket and a busy national schedule ahead. The World Cup-winning pacer was retained by the Mumbai franchise at USD 100,000 contract for the 2015 season after being bought in 2014, but Hazlewood decided to give this edition a miss. "Josh's workload has changed significantly since he first began attending the IPL," Cricket Australia (CA) General Manager of

Team Performance Pat Howard was quoted as saying by cricket.Com.Au. "The IPL is the players' leave period and in Josh's case it was deemed that not playing was the best use of that time in the leadup to a busy winter. This was agreed to with the IPL following discussions at the end of the Test series." Australia begin their two-match West Indies tour in May end and play their one and only tour match starting May 27, three days before the IPL final which is scheduled for May 24.

vious IPL. In the company of South African dasher David Miller and the Indian trio of Virender Sehwag, Manan Vohra and Wriddhiman Saha, Maxwell could well be the key to the team's fortunes this season as well. That intimidating batting order has been further beefed up by the addition of Murali Vijay. The bowling department also looks solid with Australian tearaway Mitchell Johnson leading the pacers pack. "Last year was a good season for us and we would want to carry on the winning spree this season as well," coach Sanjay Bangar said on the sidelines of KXIP's preseason camp here.

K

olkata: The talented Indian youngsters of Kolkata Knight Riders made all the difference as Mumbai Indians struggled to get breakthroughs, skipper Rohit Sharma said after their seven-wicket loss in the IPL-8 T20 cricket tournament opener. "Their strength is their domestic batters who utilised the conditions in a better way, and handled the situation well," the Mumbai Indians opener said while giving credit to the KKR batsmen for the win. Chasing 169, Kolkata Knight Riders romped home in 18.3 overs with Gautam Gambhir setting up the platform with a 43-ball 57 before Manish Pandey's 24-ball 40 and Suryakumar Yadav's 20-ball 46 not out sealed the issue. After getting the wicket of Robin Uthappa (9), Mumbai Indians struggled to get

breakthroughs as Sharma's 98 not out went in vain. "I don't regret missing out on the century but on losing after setting a good target. We could not get much breakthroughs after the first wicket." On his Mumbai teammate Yadav, Sharma said: "He's a talented youngster. He did pretty well. He plays according to his strength, understands his game very well. He looks a little matured, reads the game well. It's good for him. To be honest, he had a good Ranji season well. I wish him all the best." This being the first game of the season, the Mumbai skipper said not all is lost as they can still bounce back stronger. Keeping his faith on the bowling unit, Sharma said: "We should have executed our plans really well but I am not blaming anyone.

Surya is my my Man of the Match: Gambhir

K

olkata: Morne Morkel's tidy spell might have earned him the Man of the Match award but for skipper Gautam Gambhir Surya Kumar Yadav was the 'game-changer' in Kolkata Knight Riders' clinical seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in the IPL-8 T20 cricket tournament opener here. "No doubt, he's my Man of the Match and was the game changer. He's someone to look forward to and has a bright future," Gambhir said at the post-match press conference

yesterday. Vice-captain Yadav shouldered the responsibility

as he smashed 46 not out from 20 balls with five sixes and one four. "I told Ravi (Shastri) before the toss that Surya is someone to look forward to. The best thing that happened was we announced him vice-captain before the game. At no 4, we wanted to give him more responsibility so that we can get the best out of him. The way he reacted to that was very good," Gambhir said showering praise on the youngster from Mumbai.

Bhajji owes success to ‘Golden Generation’ K

olkata: World Cup winning offspinner Harbhajan Singh owed his success to the golden generation of Indian cricketers and said he was lucky to play under the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble. "I'm very lucky to have had seniors like them and the wealth of knowledge they had. I've become successful because of them and "I'm grateful to these guys, achieved something," India's they have played a big role in highest wicket taking offspin- my career." ner said. He also praised local hero

Ganguly and termed him as one of the best captains to lead India. "Sourav Ganguly is one of the best captains of Indian cricket team ever," he said on the sidelines of launching Harbhajan Singh Institute of Cricket's first eastern India centre at the Delhi Public School in Mega City, Rajarhat on the outskirts of the city. Having been successful, the 34-year-old now wants to pass on the knowledge to the promising youngsters and said it's important not to tinker with the natural talent.

Delhi Daredevils' Nathan Coulter-Nile celebrates along with teammates after dismissing Chennai Super Kings’ batsman Brendon McCullum during their IPL-2015 match at MAC Stadium in Chennai on Thursday. CSK scored 150 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Coulter-Nile bagged three wickets for 30 runs.

N

ew Delhi: Former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic says India can't forever sit on the laurels of greats like Leander Paes and it must have a top10 singles player for tennis to thrive in the country. "This is a big country, so having players in the top 100 and 200 is not good enough. You need a big player, a top 10 player, who is going to make the game popular and by seeing him/her, more kids take up the game," Ivanisevic, who is in India for the Road to Wimbledon programme, told PTI today. Ivanisevic, best known for his straight talk and a booming serve, feels the Indian players are not pushing hard enough despite having the skill. However, he is surprised to find that girls are more talented than boys.

Though Sania Mirza could become world number one in doubles soon, there is no top 100 singles player from India in singles category. Somdev Devvarman is the highestranked male at 171 and Ankita Raina the top female at 252. Ronaldo hits 300 mark M

adrid: Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 300th Real Madrid goal as the European champions remained four points adrift of La Liga leaders Barcelona with a 2-0 win at Rayo Vallecano. Earlier, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez were on target as Barca eased past Almeria 4-0 yesterday. Barca took over half an hour to make the breakthrough, but Messi did so in style as he curled home his 44th goal of the season. Suarez made the game safe when he fired into the top corner 10 minutes after the break and bagged his second of the evening in stoppage time after Marc Bartra headed home the third from Xavi's corner. "It is the stage of the season where we have a lot to play for.We ought to show our personality because we are Barcelona. In the league we depend on ourselves and we need to continue in this vein," Suarez said. Madrid suffered a much more uncomfortable evening in a capital derby at Rayo before Ronaldo and James Rodriguez struck midway through the secondhalf.

Rayo dominated the first period in terms of possession, but it was Madrid who had the better chances as Rodriguez shot straight at Diego Cobeno when unmarked inside the area before Ronaldo headed over from the Colombian's freekick. At the other end, Iker Casillas made a fine save to keep the visitors level at the break as he parried Roberto Trashorras's back post header to safety. Madrid started much stronger after the break and were inches away from an opener when Gareth Bale's header from Rodriguez's cross looped just wide. There was then a huge moment of controversy when Ronaldo was booked despite appearing to be clearly brought down by Antonio Amaya inside the area meaning he will miss Saturday's visit of Eibar to the Santiago Bernabeu. The chances continued for Real as Benzema, Marcelo and Bale fired just off target in a matter of minutes, and the goal finally arrived when a fine run and cross from Dani Carvajal picked out Ronaldo and he sealed his triple century of goals for Madrid in just 288 games.

talent and skill is there but physically kids in Europe are much better. "Besides there is so much to learn. How to play the points, your mental strength. It is not just about hitting the ball over the net. In addition to that, there is a need to educate the coaches. I hope they were listening to me when I was talking yesterday," said the 2001 Wimbledon winner. Ivanisevic was 'loved' for his racquet breaking behaviour on court besides his other eccentricities, but he has been forced to mellow down ever since he took to coaching. One can gauge in his voice hpw proud he feels about guiding Marin Cilic to the 2014 US Open title. Not the maverick he was in his hey days, a Ivanisevic the coach has a message for the younger crop.
