Congress MP Shashi Tharoor alleges police assault on his domestic help into ‘confessing’ that they both killed Sunanda Pushkar SIT begins probe into Sunanda’s death

N

EW DELHI: In yet another twist in his wife's death, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has accused Delhi Police of 'assaulting' and 'intimidating' his domestic help into 'confessing' that they both killed Sunanda Pushkar as police said it believes prima facie it is a case of murder. A Special Investigation Team has been constituted to probe Sunanda's death, said Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi to whom Tharoor had written a letter on November 12 last year alleging police pressure on his domestic help Narayan Singh. In the letter, the former Union Minister had complained of 'unacceptable and illegal' conduct by one of its officers who 'repeatedly physically assaulted' his domestic help Singh to force him to confess that they both murdered her. Tharoor said he and his staff had 'cooperated fully'

with the police probing the case, reports PTI. "I was therefore shocked and appalled to learn that in the course of the 16-hour interrogation conducted by four Delhi Police officers on Friday (7/11/14) and again during the 14- hour interrogation on Saturday (8/11/14), my domestic helper Narayan Singh was repeatedly physically assaulted by one of your

officers. "Worse, the officer used the traumatic physical assault to try and intimidate Narayan into 'confessing' that he and I murdered my wife," Tharoor said in the letter. Tharoor also referred to his telephonic conversation with Bassi on November 8 when he had expressed his concerns Continued on pg 12 «

‘Ghar Wapsi’ by Shiv Sena too Former mayor Shubha Raul, who had defected to MNS, returns to Shiv Sena By Suyash Padate

A

s a major blow to the BJP's attempt to take the control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) through their 'Mission 100' in the forthcoming civic elections, the Shiv Sena has started the 'Ghar Wapsi' (home-coming) operation. As a part of this effort, the Sena leadership welcomed former Mayor of Mumbai Shubha Raul in to the party fold. Three-time Sena corporator Raul was upset when the party re-nominated Vinod Ghosalkar from Dahisar Assembly constituency. She openly expressed her displeasure about this decision by the Sena leadership. Eventually Raul deserted the party before the state Assembly election, as she was denied a party ticket to contest elections from Dahisar in place of sitting Sena legislator Ghosalkar. Last morning, Raul went to

Shubha Raul Matoshree and met Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and expressed her desire to join the party. Within no time she was formally inducted into the Sena fold. Speaking to reporters, Raul said, “I do not call my decision as 're-joining the Shiv Sena'. This is only homecoming for me. I had left the party as there had been many complaints against then MLA Vinod Ghosalkar,

but he was given a ticket once again. Now since he lost the polls, my work is done. This prompted me to join hands with my party once again.” The former Mumbai Mayor had then said that she had intimated her party senior leaders that a woman candidate should be given priority in the Assembly election from the Dahisar constituency, as majority of the corporators in the area were women, but the party ignored her requests. Shubha Raul contested on the MNS ticket and challenged Sena's Ghosalkar along with Congress' Sheetal Mhatre and BJP's Manisha Chowdhary. Surprisingly, Chowdhary won the seat with a margin of 38,578 votes. Significantly, this is one more setback for the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Many prominent MNS leaders are leaving the party which is fast losing ground in the state.

he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to set up mini compost plants in the city's many grounds and gardens as it is facing a space crunch for the treatment of garbage. According to the civic officials, the solid waste management (SWM) department will set up mini composting plants, which will treat five to 10 metric tonnes (MT) of garbage in each ward. The tree leaves and mulch from the gardens and grounds will be treated at these plants. “We have made a formal request to the gardens department to allow the setting up of small composting plants which can be installed at the

far end of gardens and grounds on an area of 300-400 square metres. They have accepted the proposal and work has been started to set up such plants,” said Prakash Patil, deputy municipal commissioner (SWM). The Deonar and Mulund dumping grounds are already filled to caAbout 10,000 metric tonnes of waste is produced in the city, of which 7,500 MT is regular waste, and 2,490 MT is debris and 10 MT is biomedical waste. There are three dumping grounds in the city – Deonar (4,000 MT), Mulund (1,500 MT) and Kanjurmarg (2,000 MT).

pacity , while the Kanjur dumping ground project has been mired in legal wrangles. The BMC had earlier made several demands to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), headed by the Chief Minister, to provide land for a dumping ground. However, its pleas have not been heard by the state government. To overcome this problem, the BMC had planned to set up garbage treatment plants, for which it will to reserve plots in the new Development Plan (DP). The DP department has informed the SWM department that it is difficult to find plots of three-four acres at a stretch for this purpose. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

D-day for Mumbai Metro

If the govt decision on GR is delayed, GS elections in colleges will be delayed

By A Staff Reporter

T

he Bombay High Court will today decide whether RInfra and Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) can go back to the initial fares of Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 30 and Rs 40 for the Ghatkopar-Versova phase of the Mumbai Metro. The division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice BP Colabawalla is hearing an appeal filed by the government agency MMRDA challenging a single-bench order of the court that denied the state government the right to decide the fares. MMRDA had also challenged the new regular fares declared by Reliance Infra. Meanwhile a statement by RInfra and MMOPL said the promotional fares of Rs 10, Rs 15 and Rs 20 will continue till today. MMRDA counsel Aspi Chenoy argued that they were bound by a contractual obligation and could not charge more. According to the MMRDA, the consortium had agreed on a structure whereby the fares would be Rs 9 (up to three km), Rs 11 (from three to eight km) and Rs 13 (for more than 8 km). MMOPL, however, set the initial fares at Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 30 and Rs 40.

By Yatin Ingle

T Janak Dwarkadas, counsel for RInfra, justified the fares saying that they have been incurring a loss of Rs 85 lakh per day, as only 2.65 lakh commuters are travelling by Metro as compared to an estimated 4.1 lakh capacity. Chenoy made a comparative study of fares charged by Metro Rails at Delhi and Hyderabad. To this, Dwarkadas replied that the charges of electricity were much higher in Mumbai. JJ Bhat, counsel for MMOPL, argued that it had asked the authorities in November 2013 to constitute a Fare Fixation Committee (FFC). “Till the time the Metro Rail commenced in June 2014, several reminders were sent. However no

steps were taken in that regard,” argued Bhat. After the matter came to the Bombay High Court in July last year, the union government was given time till November 30, 2014 to set up the FFC. It was then extended till December 31, 2014. However the union government again sought time till January 31, 2015, which was rejected by the HC on the last occasion. Once it is set up, the FFC would get about three months to fix the fares. Justice RD Dhanuka had on June 24, 2014 dismissed MMRDA's petition, saying MMOPL had the right to decide the fares till the fare committee arrived at a decision.

he University Grants Commission may have declared open elections to the post of general secretary of students' councils in colleges, but the students have to wait a while before the elections can take place, for various state committees have been set up to review the UGC's decision. And unless the review reports are finalised by the various state governments, a Government Resolution cannot be declared. The elections were completely skipped last year, and a delay is expected this year. Campus elections, which were banned in Maharashtra, are going to make a comeback following a directive issued by the UGC earlier. The UGC had issued a letter asking all universities to choose their students' council members by way of elections, if they have not done it so far. The commission also urged universities to conduct fair and open elections on the basis of the rec-

ommendations made by the Supreme Court-appointed Lyngdoh Committee. As per the Maharashtra Universities Act, 1994, a varsity should initiate the process of the students council elections in August and declare the positions and election results by September end. During the Monsoon session of the Assembly, a proposal was put forward by Rajesh Tope, the then Higher and Technical Education Minister, suggesting that the government should allow students’ unions and political parties to enter into college campuses for the council elections. The ADC spoke to Dr Mrudul Nile, director of the Welfare of Students Department, who said, “Last year the elections were not declared as there had not been a final decision over the GS elections. Though the UGC has declared open elections in universities, the state government's decision is awaited. If the decision is delayed, the elections will be delayed.”

Man arrested for drinking tea in a ‘suspicious manner’

03 Vishwanath Salian | ADC

THE police can come up with a myriad of reasons for arresting someone. But for drinking tea? Vijay Patil was enjoying a relaxing morning of cutting chai, a term used to refer to having a quick half-glass of tea, in a tea stall on Kolhapur when sub-inspector Jadhav approached him and asked what he was doing. The police officer was not satisfied with this simple and

reasonable explanation and arrested him under a law that allows detention if the officer suspects someone of committing a crime. The Bombay High Court, however, realised how ridiculous this was and told the police to drop the case, stating, “One might take tea in a variety of ways, not all of them always elegant or delicate, some of them perhaps even noisy. But we know of no way to drink tea ‘suspiciously.’” According to the prosecution, Mr Patil was known to the police, but the judge didn’t care.

Billboard mistakenly depicted Morgan Freeman as Mandela

AS if the still unresolved mystery of how a fake language interpreter got into Nelson Mandela’s funeral was not enough, another case of “fake” misrepresentation got into the media circus as a billboard, originally

intended to portray the late South African president’s photo, inadvertently showed Hollywood actor Morgan Freeman’s picture instead. The billboard’s owner, Chandrashekhar, a clothing

businessman from Chennai had ordered it erected by the side of one of the roads in Coimbatore as a memorial to the late South African president. The text was in Tamil. Smaller photos of notable human rights forerunners Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa also lined the lower half of the billboard. After discovering the embarrassing gaffe, Chandrashekhar said that the designer had made the mistake, vowing to make the necessary corrections — but not before Twitter users took hold of a photo of the original billboard and shared it online. Elsewhere in India, a five-day national mourning period was declared in honour of Mandela after his death. Incidentally, in 2009, Morgan Freeman played Mandela in 'Invictus', costarring Matt Damon. Freeman also offered a eulogy during the funeral. “Today the world lost one of the true giants of the past century,” Freeman was reported saying.

The spontaneously combusting baby

Fire from skin CASES of spontaneous human combustion are so rare that one probably heard of such stories on National Geographic. This bizarre phenomenon struck, leaving an Indian baby with severe burns.

The infant, known only as Rahul, surprisingly caught fire for the fourth time, and doctors suspect the baby’s skin is likely emitting combustible gas because there was no other identifiable source of ignition. Fortunately, the boy survived has been receiving medical care.

State Congress workers awaiting party vice-president's arrival for Mahatma's centenary celebration

C

ongress leaders in the state are anticipating that their young leader, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, will show courage and turn up for a public gathering organised for the centenary celebration of Gandhi's foot-stepping on Indian soil which changed the course of Indian history. After defeats in Parliament and state assemblies – in Maharashtra, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Chhattisgarh – Rahul Gandhi has reportedly been avoiding making public appearances. According to sources, Rahul was holidaying abroad and landed in Delhi earlier last week. A delegation of state Congress leaders had

gone to visit Rahul to invite him to the celebrations. A century ago, on January 9, 1915, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, and renowned as the father of nation, had disembarked at the city's Apollo Bunder port after witnessing a battle against racial discrimination in South Africa. The historic moment of Gandhi's foot-stepping in the city port a century ago was the tipping point in the country's freedom struggle. He later passed the baton of leadership to the leaders of the Indian National Congress to take India forward on the principles of inclusiveness and secularism. he Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday attached a flat and insurance policy worth Rs.1.15 crore of a person allegedly involved in a VAT refund case in the UK. "We have attached a flat in Mumbai and insurance policy worth Rs 1.15 crore of accused Sandeep Arora, following an input received from the UK," an ED official told PTI. Arora had remitted the money to India that he had allegedly received from the refund scam in UK, the official added. In October 2014, the ED had attached his bank balance, a flat in Mumbai and policy collectively worth Rs 66 lakh based on a Letter Rogatory issued by the UK government. It was the first instance of ED taking action against someone on the basis of a LR. The Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) gives ED powers to act on the basis of Letter Rogatory against a person in India.

superintendent of a state-run boarding school at Badlapur in Thane district was arrested for allegedly molesting at least ten minor girl inmates of the facility for over a month, police said on Wednesday. The accused, identified as A.J. Girase (32), allegedly used to take the girls -- all in the age group of 12-15 years -- to computer lab in the school in night and force them to watch obscene videos while touching them inappropriately, they said. "The girls complained to the principal of the school but he did not initiate any action, following which they complained against Girase to

their parents," sub-inspector L.T. Bhoye of Kulgaon-Badlapur police station, told PTI. He said Girase was apprehended yesterday on complaint of the parents who approached police with the help of a social organisation. The school, located in Kharav village, houses around 70 students in class I to X. Girase has been booked under Sections 354-A (sexual harassment) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC and under Section 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Bhoye said.

this, the government plans to introduce Shala Darpan scheme where the bond between the school teacher, student and the parents will be strengthened at a more personal level. Under the scheme the parents will receive academic information about their children through SMS. The scheme will be first implemented in the zilla parishad, municipal council and municipal corporation schools in the state.

MPCC president Manikrao Thakre, MRCC president Janardhan Chandurkar, central and state leaders will be present on this programme. MPCC spokesman AlNasser Zakaria said, “The goal and objective of this yatra is to create awareness and consciousness in the hearts and minds of Congress party workers and spread the message to all the citizens of this country that the Congress is committed to ensure that our nation is run on the path shown by the Mahatma.

plainant and the body of someone else. According to the Santacruz police, the actress filed acomplaint against Kanti Shah who is well known in the Bollywood film industry for making C-grade movies. n absconding cheater from Mankhurd has finally been nabbed from his native place in Chikli, Buldhana, by the Mankhurd police. API Pradeep Pandey and his team have been tracking Panjabrao Gulabrao Jadhav (32) for the last three months and finally found him at his native home. Jadhav was unemployed but used to live a lavish lifestyle, conning unsuspecting victims by promising them government jobs. His modus operandi was to trap job seekers by tricking them to part with their money in exchange for securing them a government job through his contacts. First he obtained resumes from his victims to gain their confidence. He was always well dressed and spent money easily, and splurged in bars, said the police. On October 11 last year, a lady from Mankhurd lodged a complaint with the

Mankhurd police station saying that the accused Jadhav had cheated her of Rs 10,000 by promising a job to her son, but later vanished. Pandey searched for Jadhav’s whereabouts for months, but it was not easy as his Jadhav's wife had left him and his family disowned him. “He kept on changing his mobile numbers so it was hard to pin down his location. But finally a tip off led us to his whereabouts in his native place. He was arrested under section 420 (cheating) of the IPC. When produced in court, he was remanded for three days to police custody,” said Panday, the API. Vilas Kanade, the senior police inspector of Mankhurd police station urged other victims who have been cheated by Jadhav to come forward and lodge a complaint. “Seven other cases of cheating against Jadhav have already been lodged here,” said Kanade.

by profession, said in the court that he was in an unsound state of mind and may be referred to psychiatrist counselling and an application regarding the same was moved by Ansari's counsel. Ansari is said to be an Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) admirer. He had even applied for a passport about a month ago, making security agencies suspect that if he flew out of the country, it would be to support the ISIS. Police claims that Anees in his chat with two or three other likeminded youths spoke about the need to teach the US a lesson for their bombing raids. Anees's parents have

said that he used to get hyper even on petty issues. Earlier the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) requested the court for a detailed examination of Ansari's CPU by an expert committee so that data can be retracted from it to make sure that Ansari has not planned more such terrorist acts. He was charged for criminal conspiracy under section 120 (b) read with murder (IPC 302). Anees Ansari (24) was arrested by the (ATS) on October 18, for circulating threatening messages on Facebook planning blasts in an American school.

n yet another classic case of civic insensitivity, after grabbing space atop multi-storey buildings, mobile towers have now sprung up on minuscule huts situated in the middle of sprawling slum pockets in Bhayandar. One such tower was spotted (see picture) in the Ganesh Dewal Nagar slums of Bhayandar (West). Moreover the tower which pops out from a hutment just 20 feet above the ground comes under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ). It has been revealed that slumlords are taking huge amounts as monthly rent from the mobile phone service provider to operate the tower. As per official records, out of the total 506 mobile towers across the twin-city, as many as 205 towers are yet to get official permission under the standard norms and guidelines of government authorities, while 205 which were granted permission have failed to re-validate their annual contracts with the MiraBhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC). However most of the companies have moved the judiciary seeking deemed permissions restraining the

While the legally installed mobile towers generate an annual revenue of Rs 5 crore, the unauthorised ones which have been set up on residential and commercial buildings are not only depriving the civic body of funds for the past ten years, but some of them

which have been installed on unstable structures have posed serious threat to the lives of the people. It should be noted that the MBMC had launched a cosmetic drive in June 2013 by demolishing a couple of towers. However since then the action has remained on paper.

fter the rampage that took place at the Diva railway station, the Mumbra police had detained a number of people. However, the relatives and parents of the people who are detained claim that their children or relatives are not even spotted in the CCTV footage and hence sans any investigation or any clue, police had taken them in their custody. Subhash Singh, father of Sudhir Singh (20) who is an ITI student, said, "My son was sitting at one of the hotels on the same evening when the incident happened and was discussing about the Diva incident with his friend, when the police grabbed him and took him to the police station. His mistake was only he was discussing the issue with his friends, and on that basis, police arrested him, which is totally unjustified. Has has his exams after 15 days and has only recently taken up a job in Worli, hence this matter would affect his career." Sachin Wadekar (25), brother of Ajay Dhandrut (18), who is also arrested by the Mumbra police, is a student of Tours and Travels and is also a tutor and does part time work at Bhiwandi with a caterer. Sachin said, "On the day of the incident Ajay was at his home till 3pm and after that he left for his

job at Bhiwandi and was coming back home, when police arrested him at Diva station." Sachin, cousin of Ajay, had approached the Mumbra police after he learnt that Ajay had been arrested by the police for the Diva issue. “He said that Ajay was spotted in the CCTV footage at the time of incident. But when I checked the footage, Ajay was not spotted any where in the footage,” added Sachin. Girish Vakode, brother of Anand Vakode, who has been arrested by the Mumbra police, said, "My brother was present at the Diva station to go for his office work, like thousands of commuters who were present at the station. Though my brother has not committed any crime he has been arrested by the police, due to which my whole family is disturbed." "We have detained 18 people regarding the Diva incident, later they got police custody for two days, who are still in lock up. As far as parents claims are concerned, we are verifying the authenticity of the people, in this matter who are detained and will take action against those who are guilty. Accordingly we are going through the CCTV footage and clips. Hence, not a single innocent person will be arrested or punished in this regard," said, DCP, Prabhakar Budhwant, Thane.

Probe into Sunanda L murder case T

he Delhi police have registered a case of murder with regard to the death of Sunanda, wife of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor. They say they have now strong evidence that she was killed. All that they have to do now is to find out who did it. Among other persons, Sunanda's husband Shashi Tharoor is under the police scanner. Details about his movements on the day of the murder are now available. A short time before her death, Tharoor was with her. He left her to attend some meeting and when he came back she was dead. The medical report of the AIIMS is now with the police. Sunanda was in good health. All her body organs were functioning properly. And there was no trace of any drug when once injected, it is almost impossible to detect it. Tharoor however is denying all charges against him: “I am being framed” he has said. The Congress party is expectedly defending him. It is saying that it is nothing but vendetta on the part of the Bharatiya Janata Party. It is trying hard to prove an innocent man guilty. After Sunanda died and the controversy began, the police should have filed an FIR. The police under the Congress then had however no go but to do what its masters told them.

AST time when we met on the New Year day, little did we know as to what was t in store for 2015? However, as the day unfolded we came to know that a boat, in which alleged smugglers were commuting, was captured by Indian Coast Guards near Porbandar in Gujarat. However, it turned out to be a different story, far more frightening than routine crime news. The commuters in the boat committed suicide before they could’ve been booked by the Indian Coast Guard. Later, it was told that those who killed themselves were perhaps not mere smugglers but Pakistan-trained terrorists, who were making an attempt to land on Indian shores to repeat the 26/11 attack on Mumbai. Thank God, the attempt to terrorise India once again was foiled by our alert Coast Guard jawans. Even as the Pakistani authorities, as usual, are denying their involvement in the plot and ridiculing it as a ‘minor incident of routine crime’, our Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has another story to tell. He pointed out, “Smugglers don’t commit suicide or hara-kiri. A normal boat even if carrying drugs, will surrender after dumping its drugs. They will not kill themselves unless they are motivated enough and trained to do that”. He added, “Secondly, smugglers won’t keep in touch with Pakistan’s Maritime Security Agency (MSA) or army. That’s why I will classify them as suspected or probable terrorists. I can assure you that those on the boat were not smugglers.” The statement of the Defence Minister is eloquent to express India’s fear and concern about Pakistan’s unabated attempts to destabilize India by pushing in gangs of armed and trained terrorists on Indian soil to create threats. The fact that such attempts are being tried when the historical visit of US President Barack Obama is just three-weeks ahead and the world is looking at it with a lot of expectations as he would be the first US Head of State to attend Indian Republic Day Parade at Raj Path in New Delhi, the nation’s biggest extravaganza and show of strength of its armed forces and also soft power of its culture.

evacuation operations have been forced to be undertaken as the villagers in the bordering areas are scared of attacks. The intensity of shelling could be gauged by the fact that Pakistani shells are landing as deep as three km into Indian territory. In short, the New Year has dawned with cloudy skies of fear and terror in the bordering areas of India and Pakistan. While on one hand, India will have to try to resolve and ease tension through diplomatic efforts, we cannot allow our citizens to live under tension and allow soldiers to die in bomb shelling. Four months ago, when Pakistan

Learning their lesson, these activities had come to a grinding halt for some time. However, the Pakistani rangers have resumed using long-range mortars possibly, 81mm shells once again. This ammunition can hit targets up to five km, say war experts. There are two issues involved here. Number 1 is, in spite of falling on their face on several occasions, why is Pakistani army making such attempts. Number 2 is what type of immediate and permanent solution that India can apply to get rid of the perennial problem. The sitting Pakistani government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, like its predecessors, survives in office only on the issue of hatred against India and keeping the Kashmir issue If this is not enough, there has been non-stop alive. raining of shells and also firing from Pakistani Despite ruthless and unabated attempts to borders in Jammu & Kashmir since January 1 foil elections for Jammu & Kashmir Assembly that has resulted in death of half a dozen vil- elections, record-breaking voting was regislagers and also army soldiers. When the soul begins to feel its own life T

HE definition of spiritual attainment can be found in the study of human nature. For the nature of man is one and the same, be he spiritual or material. There are five things that man yearns for: life, power, knowledge, happiness, and peace, and the continual appetite which is felt in the deepest self yearns for one or other of these five things. When considering these five appetites, which are the deepest man has, one finds that all the efforts man makes to satisfy them seem to be in vain. They can only be satisfied by spiritual attainment. That is the only answer to them. Thus, the desire to live can only be satisfied when the soul realizes its eternal life. For mortality exists in conception rather than in reality. From a spiritual point of view mortality is the lack of the soul's understanding of its own self. It is like a person who had lived

mir Valley. Moreover, voters almost threw away the National Conference government of Omar Abdullah, supported by the Congress. Instead Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) led by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti emerged the largest single party to be followed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Both the parties were never favourable to the separatists’ elements. If PDP-BJP form a coalition government, it is certain to rule the most-troubled state for the next six years. Pakistani government and the separatists would not like this situation. Therefore these last frantic efforts in the border areas.

India led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar have to play a hard ball game with their neighbour on field and in the diplomatic corridors. Modi had invited Sharif for his swearing-in last May. The hope was that a new chapter of harmonious relations and friendship could be opened. However, as Nawaz returned so has the climate of fear and hatred. The fact that one of the prime accused of 26/11 terror attack on Mumbai who was in jail in Pakistan was granted bail, revealed the intentions of Pakistani government loud and clear. In this situation, the least India can do is to bring in pressure on the Pakistani government from USA on one hand and China on the other. Considering that Modi has developed ‘friendly’ relations with both, it should not be that difficult. Failing to forge peace, India will have to exhibit its military might to Pakistan. For all said and done, Pakistan is a weaker nation than India on all fronts. If Indian government gives free hand to armed forces to operate, it would not be difficult to bring Pakistan to its knees with a minimum loss to India. The question is will Modi government show the courage to show its power? And if so, will all political forces stand behind united? Considering that BJP and NDA are still in minority in the Rajya Sabha, Modi has to be friendly with splinter and regional groups. That is taking its toll. In 2016, when Rajya Sabha will reduce Congress and its allies in minority, Modi will have a free hand to operate. Will that be too late? Twitter: @BharatkumarRaut

Indian selectors a bunch of jokers THE omission of Murali Vijay in preference to Stuart Binny in the Team India squad picked for the ensuing World Cup is too glaring to be ignored and has been commented upon by a few sports journalists. Vijay has been in tremendous form in Australia so far. Binny has not done anything of note to merit a place in the WC team. Looks as though he has a very influential godfather among the selectors. Dhoni was also right in asking for Varun Aaron who has gained a lot of experience in recent years. Otherwise, the team is acceptably good, considering the batting and bowling resources we have and if all of them put their heads down and perform to their potential, Team India can defend SELECTORS’ SLOPPY SELECTION: The squad for the World Cup has been announced and as usual non performers have got the nod; did the selectors forget the the title it won four years ago. — Dr V Subramanayan, Thane fact that the World Cup is being held in Australia and New Zealand and not in our backyard just like the last edition.

Separate symposium THE Indian Science Congress witnessed a celebration of how ancient Indians supposedly anticipated modern scientific achievements millennia ahead of the rest of the world. Instead it should focus on how to promote modern science in India and build research institutions that are among the best in the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had himself claimed that Ganesh's elephant head was an early example of ‘plastic surgery; and Karna's birth, a clear case of advanced genetics. The accepted history of knowledge has been written by the West from a Eurocentric point of view. It is entirely probable that Indian achievements in diverse areas of scholarship remain unaccounted for and unacknowledged. But to bring these out, we need a scientific approach to research, not chauvinistic claims to ancient omniscience. There is no harm in exploring the history of science; but that is a different specialisation. The NDA can, and should, start a symposium on the former, while devoting the science congress to pure sciences. — Bhagwan Thadani, Pune

Provocative Pakistan firing THE continued unabated firing by Pakistan on Indian border posts appears to be assuming serious proportions. The latest incidents indicate an element of precision targeting from the Pakistani side with the use of sophisticated mortar shells that point to the involvement of regular Pakistani army soldiers alongside the front-line which is currently manned by the Pakistani Rangers. Helping false cause ONE really fails to understand why the 'terror boat' episode is made into a patriotic versus anti-national issue, even when the replies of the Defence Minister some days back were half hearted and shuttled between 'terror boat' and 'smuggling boat' theory. One channel anchor was so hyper that any panelist who dared not to tow his line was suspected of being anti-national and helping the Pakistani cause. Nobody is questioning the integrity of our Coast Guards and also the neeyat of the government, but then claiming everyone who raises any query as “helping the Pakistanicause” is totally unjustifiable. One would just like to think what this government would label the NDA government which released three dreaded terrorists after the Kandahar hijacking. The lives of 184 passengers were saved but at what cost. Aren't we witnessing the result of that 'generous' act even now ? Did that government not help the Pakistani cause then ? Think. — Abdul Monim, Vashi

Who did it? APROPOS your cover story 'Sunanda was murdered' (ADC, January 7), the real question to be asked is why it took a full year for the forensic report to be made public. It leads to the conclusion that the report must have been ready for months, but that its timing was politically motivated. The BJP has been facing a lot of flak lately over unfulfilled promises and the conversion row, and this makes for a handy diversion. INDIAN cricket selectors are a bunch of jokers. Keeping Yuvraj Singh out of the World Cup squad was a blunder which will cost Team India dearly. His rookie replacement Stuart Binny is not even a regular member of our ODI team and perhaps favoured because he is the son of ex-cricketer and selector Roger Binny. While form is temporary and class is permanent, one thought Yuvraj Singh should have had been a certainty as he did score runs and tons in domestic cricket and has been gaining confidence with each game he played of late. India won the last World Cup in Mumbai thanks to Yuvraj Singh's efforts, who also perhaps happens to be the best all-rounder ODI's have ever witnessed. His mere presence would have lifted the morale of our boys. Chief selector Sandeep Patil, a no-nonsense cricketer himself, should have batted for 'Yuvi'. India I am afraid without Yuvraj Singh will find it extremely difficult to retain the World Cup in Australia.

ich tributes were paid to veteran actress Nanda on the eve of her 76 birth anniversary on Thursday. In a function organised at Genuine Recording Studio, Juhu, on Wednesday, speakers recalled some of her unforgettable performances. Nanda more popularly known as 'Baby Nanda' was born on March 8, 1939 into the family of Vinayak Damodar Karnataki (Master Vinakak, a successful Marathi actordirector) in Kolhapur. She died on March 25 last year in Mumbai. Nanda made her debut with film 'Mandir' in 1948 at the age of five and worked as a child actor in films like 'Jaggu', 'Angaarey' (played Nargis’ as a kid) and 'Jagriti' between 1948-56. She did Marathi films including 'Jagat Guru Shankaracharya', and 'Kuldaivat'. In the Marathi film 'Shevgacha Shenga' (1955), she was the lead heroine. Nanda's paternal uncle, V Shantaram, gave her a break in a successful brother-sister saga 'Toofan Aur Diya' (1956). She received her first Filmfare nomination as Best Supporting Actress for 'Bhabhi' (1957), a golden jubilee hit. She played the title role in L.V. Prasad’s 'Chhoti Bahen' (1959), which turned out to be a diamond jubilee hit and made her a star overnight. After that 'Dhool Ka Phool' (1961) was another super hit. She then played lead roles, such as one of Dev Anand’s heroines in 'Hum Dono' and 'Teen Deviyan'. She was the heroine in BR Chopra’s 'Kannon' (1960), a film with no songs. She won the Filmfare Best Supporting actress award for 'Anchal' (1960). Through the ‘60s and 80s she gave

She stopped doing films after 'Naya Nasha' (1973), since she was disappointed that despite a nuanced performance of a drug addict the film flopped. Later in 1982, she came back with three successful films, all coincidentally having her play Padmini Kolhapure’s mother in 'Ahista Ahista', 'Mazdoor' and Raj Kapoor’s

'Prem Rog'. She then retired permanently. On the eve of her first birth anniversary after her demise, her youngest brother and director Jaiprakash Karnatki culled out memories of his sister. “In 1947, our father Master Vinayak was making 'Mandir' in which Lata didi (Mangeshkar) was playing the role of a sister. One day he asked Nanda didi, who was

It also amounts to the use of physical coercion in the attempt to frame an innocent man. I would request you to take immediate and appropriate action against such unlawful misconduct of the officer concerned," he said. The Delhi Police, which had yesterday registered a murder case into Sunanda's death under section 302 of the IPC on the basis of an AIIMS medical report, yesterday said the SIT has finalised an 'action plan' to investigate the case and did not rule out questioning Tharoor soon. "When we file a case under Sec 302 of IPC, it means we have prima facie reasons to believe that it is a case of murder," Bassi told reporters on being asked whether police have any evidence that it was a case of murder. She sold our bungalow, cars, etc to pay off his alleged debts. With seven children, she was on the streets. Our maternal aunt gave us some space at Sonawala bulding in Tardeo. In those struggling days Nanda didi did many films to support us. “Nanda didi didn’t hesitate to work with newcomers including Jagdeep ('Bhabhi'), Mehmood ('Qaidi No 911'), Manoj Kumar ('Bedaag'), Dharmendra ('Mera Kasoor Kya Hai'), Jeetendra ('Parivar') and Sanjeev Kumar ('Pati Patni').” Jaiprakash recalled an instance of an ego clash between Shashi Kapoor and Nanda. “Her film 'Jab Jab Phool Khile' (1965) with Shashi Kapoor was a super duper hit. But since in the credits Nanda’s name came first, Shashi Kapoor refused to work with her thereafter. However most of his films flopped. Eventually at the suggestion of his wife Jennifer, Shashi Kapoor apologised to Nanda and both together gave more hits thereafter.” Filmmaker Satyaprakash Mangatani said, “I met Nanda with veteran film director late Surajprakash who had made 'Jab Jab Phool Khile'. She was a humble, simple and down to earth personality. Once she and Surajprakashji told me an incident that occurred while shooting 'Jab Jab Phool Khile' in Kashmir. The choreographer could not reach the location. However, Nanda refused to stop shooting and herself choreographed the song 'Ye Sama Sama Hai Pyaar Ka', and completed the shoot. Incidentally the song was shot from 3 am to 6 am in the chilly weather of Srinagar on a houseboat.” of murder in Sunanda's death. Sunanda, 51, was found dead in a five-star hotel in the national capital on January 17 last year. Dr Sudhir Gupta, the head of the AIIMS medical board, which had done the postmortem, today maintained that their report did not mention "homicide" in the findings that held "poisoning" as the cause of death. "Our report doesn't mention the death is homicidal in nature. It is due to poisoning. Police had sought an opinion in the matter and we have already given it. Now it is for the police to probe further," head of the medical board Sudhir Gupta here said. Asked about Tharoor's allegations, Bassi said, "if there is anything of that sort, we will definitely look into it." In the letter, Tharoor had reiterated that he has "complete trust and faith" in the Delhi Police and that he was committed to fully cooperate with the investigations to ensure the timely completion of the inquiry. "My staff and I have always made ourselves available for any kind of inquiry and investigation, but the recent behaviour of the officers towards my staff is a matter of serious concern to any lawabiding citizen.

>> Julie Robinson believes that a good hairstyle can boost your confidence

THE MASTER

BARBER

Ever wondered who cuts your hairstylist’s hair? Dev Goswami has the answer! He speaks to Julie Robinson, a master barber at the Truefitt & Hill men’s salon, about her passion for grooming and much more n Tell us about your passion for

grooming. When did it all start? I was drawn to the grooming industry at a very young age. I have pictures of myself as a little girl, styling my mother’s hair giving her a makeover. Twelve years ago, I decided that it was time to master a new skill, and that’s when I turned to grooming and styling. The technical aspect of male grooming has always intrigued me — not only detail and definition, but also the skill and craft that is involved in giving the perfect hot towel wet shave. Today, I’m lucky enough to be a master barber at Truefitt & Hill.

n Off late, we’ve been seeing quite a few

expensive salon services in Mumbai. But for most people, a haircut is not worth spending lots of money on. What are your thoughts about this? At Truefitt & Hill, gentlemen don’t just come in for a service, they visit us for an experience. It is almost like a trip back in time, where modern lifestyle is replaced by the relaxed, leisurely feel of traditional open razors, fragrant cologne sprays and shaving cream that is skillfully applied with a traditional badger shaving brush. I believe that our clients are more than happy to pay for the exceptional service that they are sure about receiving. You can easily draw an analogy from a restaurant dinner. You could say that a meal is a meal and that it’s not worth spending extra money on an expensive restaurant, yet we all know that this is far away from reality. One cannot put a price on the first impression that a person makes. n How does Julie like to wear her hair?

n How important is a person’s hairstyle

with respect to the overall personality of a man or a woman? I think we all agree that your appearance impacts your mood, and if you think you look great, you feel great. Being wellgroomed is very important and it does

have an effect on your daily life. Statistics show that well-groomed people are more successful than those who are unkempt. A person’s hairstyle is an indicator of their overall image and represents their personality. A conservative haircut tells you that the person is traditional, while a flamboyant hairstyle reflects a more adventurous personality.

>> Julie loves using Truefitt and Hill’s Preshave Oil

And more importantly, who cuts and styles your hair? I’m always trying out new hairstyles, but I tend to keep my hair tied back while I’m at work. Working with some of the most talented hair stylists in the industry, I’m surrounded by unmatched talent, which means that when it comes to trying out a new style I will always go to one of my Truefitt & Hill colleagues.

Quick Questions n One mistake people make when it comes to hairstyles: I think one of the biggest mistakes that people make is choosing a style without taking their face shape into consideration. Remember that not all styles suit everyone. It’s always a good idea to consult your barber if you want to try something new. n A celebrity whose hair you’d love to style: Pierce Brosnan. He’s got a good head of hair, which you could do amazing things with. n Salon equipment that you cannot do without: More than equipment it’s the products, and working for one of the industry leaders, I’m spoilt for choice! I think my go-to product would have to be Truefitt & Hill’s Pre-shave Oil. Enriched with essential oils, it not only softens the hair bristles, but also provides an extra layer of protection, helping prevent razor burns and irritation. n Celebrity with the best hairstyle: George Clooney always looks great. His look is neat and stylish, and his hair always looks natural. n A hairstyle that will never go out of fashion: A traditional cut will never go out of fashion. In fact, Europe is seeing a comeback of the ‘30s style of grooming, with neat and sophisticated styles proving to be extremely popular.

Man Up Want to switch up your wardrobe? Dev Goswami & Sara Shah suggest you take a peek into your man’s closet, as they give you a host of tips that will help you pull off men’s accessories

I

f you have the confidence, you can pull off almost any item of clothing that you want to wear. And, that includes clothing and accessories that are meant for men. Although several fashion brands have introduced special collections for women that have been inspired by men’s clothing, take a look at some items that you can borrow from a man’s wardrobe and how you can style them.

susPenders A clothing staple since the 1950s, suspenders have been a recurring trend in men’s fashion. But, you can sport them as well! Opt for glittery suspenders and pair them with a plaid shirt and denims, or with a pretty long-sleeved top and skirt for a retro look. For a casual look, you can also pick a pair of printed suspenders in colours such as blue, green and red, and pair it with a solid white T-shirt.

Boyfriend Blazers While the actual idea was for women to wear their partner’s blazers, fashion labels have now started designing boyfriend blazers specifically for women. This versatile clothing item can be styled in

designer sPeak Wearing men’s accessories isn’t a new trend. Here are a some classic men’s items that have been used in women’s wear. We asked designer Sujata Ahuja to give us tips about how you can style them.

several ways, but an easy tip to wear one is to layer it over a breezy dress or pair it with jeans and a loose top. But, make sure that your top isn’t too constricted or conservative and shows just the right amount of skin.

Belts If you’re willing to put in some effort, we have an excellent DIY for you. Pick up a pack of tiny, gold stars, and, using a strong adhesive, stick them on to your partner’s belt at regular intervals. You can use this funky accessory to add a fun touch to your ensemble by pairing it with a casual, plaid shirt and denims. If you can get your hands on a thin, formal belt, you can pair it with a flowy dress, by wearing it just above your waist.

hats We aren’t suggesting that you raid his wardrobe and pick up the first hat that you can get your hands own. But, the two styles of hats that you can definitely wear are a fedora hat and a beanie. There aren’t any hard and fast rules when it comes to donning a fedora, and wearing one will accentuate almost any casual outfit.

Bow ties

Bow ties have been a part of women’s fashion for a while now. Sujata suggests that you pair a bow tie with a fitted button down shirt and well-fitted trousers with a classic pair of pumps for a androgynous, but elegant look. “It is essential to ensure that your clothes are well-fitted and not loose or baggy in order to maintain the outfit’s femininity. If you prefer a casual look, pair the bow tie with a pretty printed shirt in a fun colour. You can even pick a dainty skirt with a jumper for a more feminine look,” she adds.

Pretty Pink We love this pair of oxford shoes from www.limeroad.com. They are cute and trendy, and will pair well with a bright outfit. Price `1,799

Oversized watches make for a great women’s accessory, if you know how to wear them right. Sujata says, “The trend of wearing oversized watches has been around for a while now. But, if you don’t have an oversized watch, you can just borrow your father’s or your partner’s watch. It’s even better if it’s a gold watch! Stack it with a mix of delicate and chunky bracelets and you’re good to go.”

oxford shoes

Long known for a being a classic footwear style for men, Oxford shoes are easy to pull off for women as well. So much so, that several footwear brands have a separate line of Oxford shoes for women. However, to ensure that your look is trendy, Sujata suggests that you pick up a fashionable pair. “You can find Oxford shoes in a variety of colours, and the best way to sport them is to pair them with a skirt or trousers as it ensures a casual, chic vibe,” she adds.

« five wayS to rock ScarveS

Scarves are one of the most versatile fashion accessories and Sara Shah suggests trying these easy and fun ways to style them

simplicity is key If you aren’t used to wearing scarves, your best bet is to opt for a simple, safe look. Pairing a scarf with a neutral and basic outfit such as jeans and tank top is a good idea. Once you get used to wearing them, you can amp up your style by experimenting with different prints, colours and textures. Play it up This might sound like a contradiction to our earlier point, but keep it too simple, and you will end up with a boring, dated look. Make sure that you try different prints and styles. You can even try a different technique of knotting your scarf. Look online for tutorials that will teach you the different ways in which you can knot a scarf. switch places Don’t limit your style to just wearing a scarf around your neck. Esha Gupta looks effortlessly stylish in this vintage, rose-printed dress. The actress manages to pull-off whatever outfit she chooses to wear, but the simplicity of this look is what makes it so appealing. We love that she has kept things minimal by skipping the jewellery and opting for wavy hair, and we especially love the brogues that she’s picked, instead of ballet flats that most others would have chosen.

We love this look by Shriya. Although we feel that lace dresses have been done to death in the past year, this nude one, paired with simple flats and a sling bag look lovely on the actress. The pink lip also stops the actress from looking pale and washed out. If we could change one thing though, it would be her hair — a messy bun or fishtail braid would’ve really elevated this look.

ave you just been promoted? Is this the first time that you’ve asked to manage a team? If you’ve answered yes to both these questions, this article is for you. We’re sure that deep down, you’re nervous about leading your first ever team. While it’s a given that you will fumble a little before you understand your new title and responsibilities, we’re making the transition easier for you by giving you a few tips that will help you avoid common mistakes and learn how to be a good boss.

>> Leading a team can be tricky, especially when you are newly promoted

don’t tolerate sexisM This might not be the most obvious point and you may not even want to think about it, but the ugly truth is that sexism is an issue that plagues most workplaces. While you don’t need to be a flag-bearer for feminism, not taking appropriate action when you find an employee behaving in an inappropriate and sexist manner will make you come across as a meek pushover. So, use your discretion to separate light-hearted banter from serious, sexist comments and make sure that you keep such behaviour in check.

Manage your FriendshiPs The friendships that you build as part of a team can impede you from performing effectively when you become the boss. Sharing a healthy, friendly rapport with your team is necessary, but don’t get so attached that you have trouble delegating tasks. Another reason why you need to be wary of cultivating a close friendship with your employees is that of a few of them might use the emotional connection that you share to get out of working on a particular assignment.

don’t be too distant This is a corollary to the previous point. Trying to keep the personal out of the professional can sometimes lead to situations where you might become inaccessible to your employees. Not only will this reduce your team’s productivity, it will also cause your employees to doubt your ability to lead them. You don’t need to spoon-feed your employees, but make sure that you are present — it doesn’t have to be physically — to solve problems that might arise during the course of a normal work day.

be a good Worker Leading employees who think that they are better workers than you are is one of the worst situations that you can be in. This is a common problem that new bosses face, because the thrill and power of your new designation might lead you to believe that you don’t need to do much

work. If you don’t understand what a particular project is about and the direction that it should take, your juniors will not respect you or your professional skills, making it hard for you to function effectively as their boss.

stay out oF it Once you delegate an assignment, it is important that you don’t meddle too much in its execution. This is a tip that is really important for new bosses, because transitioning from a team member to a team leader can often leave you confused about what you should and should not concern yourself with. As a boss, you need to set broad parameters such as deadlines and guidelines on the kind of work that you expect. Unless you’re mentoring an intern or a new employee, remember that your team is capable enough to figure out how an assignment should be executed.

« career advice boss lying to you? Find out What to do My boss came up to me a few weeks ago and gave me an extra assignment to do. He was quite apologetic about increasing my work, and said that he had no choice as he had a family emergency to attend to and so, would be on leave for a week. At first I was thrilled about him trusting me with an important assignment, but then, a few days later, I came across his social media page, which showed him busy enjoying himself on a holiday! I did get a little angry because he blatantly lied to me. But at the same time, he’s my boss, so I doubt I can do anything about it. Is there anything that you can suggest? — delnaz Mistry, Colaba

dear delanz, Like you said — he is your boss. And, while it may be unprofessional, the fact is that if he wants to take leave on the basis of a lie, it’s something that’s between him and his superiors. We aren’t saying that your anger isn’t justified, but that you should forget about the incident and move on. However, before you do that, if you’d really like to do something about this, you can pass a light-hearted comment about his vacation. Make sure that your comment is meant as a joke, otherwise he might think that you’re crossing a line with your comments. If he takes it well, he might even tell you about why he had to lie to you in the first place.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 2015 >> Don’t cry every time you forget something. Stress only worsens baby brain syndrome

« Top 5: MusT-haves for a newborn

If you’re expecting your first baby, Dev Goswami recommends that you stock up on these essential items DIAPEr HANDbAGS

Yes, we’re actually talking about a handbag that doubles up as a diaper bag. Websites such as www.flipkart.com and www.firstcry.com stock a range of totes and large bags that have classy designs, which won’t give you away at a dinner party.

TrAvEl SYSTEmS

BaBy Brains Baby brain syndrome is a common complaint among expectant mothers, which causes them to become extremely forgetful. Shirley Mistry tells you all you need to know about this syndrome

WHAT IS IT? Forgetting whether you called the doctor to fix an appointment, where you left your phone, or what you need to purchase after you walk into a grocery store, are all extremely likely scenarios if you suffer from baby brain syndrome, which is also known as pregnancy brain. You may be super organised and efficient otherwise, but a case of pregnancy brain can turn your memory to mush. From forgetting where you placed a particular item, to forgetting to shut the windows, and sometimes, even your phone number, you will suffer from bouts of shortterm memory loss. This syndrome will also make you feel as though your brain isn’t as sharp as it used to be. However, the fact is that your brain is functioning at its fullest capacity — you just don’t know it.

>> To keep a track of things, write down the tasks that you’re supposed to do

WHAT CAN YOU DO? Instead of working yourself into a tizzy about the things that you keep forgetting, take a look at the following tips to find out what you can do to combat this syndrome.

DOOr & DrAWEr lATCHES

One of the most important items that you’ll need to baby-proof your home are latches. These strap locks are inexpensive (you can get a set of 10 for `450 from www.ebay.in) and will work on a range of furniture such as drawers, cabinet doors, refrigerators and toilet seats.

rOCkING CHAIr

A rocking chair keeps your baby busy while you finish your household chores. There are several varieties available, but it’s a good idea to pick one that has musical instruments attached to it in order to keep your baby engaged. However, make sure that you avoid buying a chair with wheels in order to prevent any untoward incidents.

WATErPrOOf mATTrESS

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN? While your brain hasn’t actually changed, in size or ability, your priorities have. Obsessing over your baby, coupled with fluctuating hormone levels, can spell doom for your otherwise meticulous brain. A British study showed that a surge in your hormones affects your spatial memory, which explains why you keep forgetting where you’ve left your phone or keys. It’s also worth mentioning that when you’re too busy or stressed, it is completely normal to forget small, odd tasks. Another study suggests that the volume of your brain cells decreases during the final weeks of your pregnancy, which is why you sometimes feel forgetful and disoriented. While this sounds worrisome, the good news is that your ability to remember things will be back in full measure — as quickly as you lost it.

Travel systems can be expensive (expect to spend more than `20,000), but they offer better comfort than regular strollers and are easier to manoeuvre. Most travel systems are collapsible, portable and come with hand-held carriers that also function as car seats.

n Get more sleep: This may seem unrealistic if you are in the final stages of your pregnancy (with your big belly preventing you from sleeping comfortably) or if you have just delivered a baby, but it is crucial to get enough quality sleep. Remember how scattered and foggy you feel at work after a late night? Pregnancy brain is just a more intense version of this. So, rest as much as you can in order to keep your mind alert. n Delegate: Make the most of your pregnancy brain and delegate tasks to friends and family who are willing to help out. The fewer tasks that you are responsible for, the easier it will be to complete them without forgetting what you set out to do. n Write it down: Since you can’t rely on your brain to keep track of everything, write it down. You can either note down tasks on a big calender (which will help

your partner keep track of things as well), or you can set reminders and type out notes on your phone. Avoid writing on random scraps of paper and tiny notepads though, because — and we say this with a straight face — the chances of you remembering where you left the notepad are slim. n Don’t work yourself up into a tizzy: Bursting into tears every time you don’t remember something or getting stressed about it will only make things worse. Instead, dismiss it and move on. Remember that a few months down the line, you’ll have a great story to laugh over. n Eat up: Eating choline rich foods such as dairy, eggs, soaked nuts, cauliflower and broccoli, as well as foods that are rich in omega-3 acids, boosts your and your baby’s brain function and increases the production of acetylcholine — a memory-forming chemical.

We can’t recommend this enough! Constantly changing and cleaning soiled mattresses can prove to be quite a task, which is why you should invest in a waterproof mattress. Websites such as www.fabmart.com sell waterproof mattresses for around `2,000. A cheaper alternative is to buy mattresses protectors, which can be used to keep mattresses dry — you can get one from www.firstcry.com for `165.

If you have just called it quits on an abusive relationship, whether it was physical or emotional, Yamini Walia has some tips that will help you move on

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 2015

« SoS: SoLve our Situation! Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on...

Gynelle Alves

20

My husband and I got married five years ago. We were both in our early thirties then and we’re both a little surprised to have done so as we weren’t really looking to get married firstly... It was kind of hilarious to finally tell everyone who asked me, “So, not getting married?” or “Still single?”, that I finally was!

A

torturous relationship can leave you hurt, depressed and feeling hopeless. While it takes courage to free yourself from such a situation — and that is something that you should be proud of in itself — an abusive relationship can leave you full of disturbing memories that make it difficult to move on and lead a happy, fulfilling life. So, we’ve rounded up a few tips that will help you stay strong, once the relationship is over.

No coNtact End all ties with your ex the moment you decide to call off your relationship. Staying in touch will mean that sooner or later, you’ll have to deal with his constant pleas of giving him another chance. Also, he might vent his frustrations by making hurtful comments. Your best bet is to ensure that your ex is completely out of your life — even if it means that you have to block his calls and messages.

Because of our age and careers and a whole bunch of other reasons, we decided that we would not have children. It was a hard decision to make, but we are happy with it. So now... How long has it been now?

>> To get closure from an abusive relationship, it is important that you accept the fact that you’ve been in one

RealiSe aBuSe Sometimes, it can be difficult for you to accept that you were in an abusive relationship, especially when you’ve just ended one. However, this is an extremely important step in order to move on. You need to be comfortable with the idea of acknowledging your relationship as abusive.

your head. So, try to be around people you love — this will not only give you muchneeded support, it will also allow you to express your suppressed feelings and help you to get rid of the baggage, once you’ve established a comfort level with your loved ones.

RouND-off the love

Seek help

One of the worst situations that you might have to deal with is still having feelings for your ex. But, instead of beating yourself up about how you could still love someone who hurt you, remember that such feelings are quite normal — your ex, after all, was an important part of your life, so you’re bound to feel emotional. However, you also need to accept the fact that while the feelings are normal, you can’t afford to dwell (or worse, act) upon them.

If your self-esteem has hit an all-time low and you’re finding it difficult to move on, then we recommend seeking help from a therapist or a counsellor. A therapist will offer you useful insights on the matter, helping you work towards healing your emotional wounds. It is also a good idea to get in touch with a support group where you can connect with people who have undergone similar experiences.

faMily & fRieNDS

The best way to move on is by involving yourself in activities and hobbies that interest you. Stay determined about pursuing these activities and try to make them a part of your daily life. This will keep you busy, and will distract your mind from the thoughts and memories of your tumultuous relationship.

One of the best ways to move on from an abusive relationship is to connect with your family and friends. You don’t have to tell them about your relationship if you’re not comfortable talking about it, but if you remain aloof, the relationship, along with its hurtful memories, will keep playing in

We just celebrated our fifth !

And then it starts... From Vera at work, and Kanti who works for us, to the aunties, neighbours and catty Charu... What? No baby still? Is something wrong with you? With hubby? You’re quite old no? Baby? BABY?? BABY!!

I find it meddlesome but as long as my husband and I are ok, I thought that everything would be fine. Then one day... I wonder what our child would look like...

« Dear grace, i have a probLem... Dear Grace, My husband is the most generous person I know. While there is no doubt about his good nature, a certain habit of his has been bothering me off late. He lost his job just before Christmas, and we don’t have substantial savings. But, instead of cutting back on expenses and being cautious when it comes to our finances, he went all out with the Christmas gifts and New Year’s Eve celebrations. While I didn’t think too much of it while he was spending, I recently got to know that he spent a small fortune buying gifts for my entire family! I

really want to bring up the issue with him, but don’t know how to approach the subject without coming across as nagging or reprimanding. What should I do? — Mehak Singh, Borivali Dear Mehak, First, let’s highlight the silver lining to this situation — the fact that your husband genuinely cares about your family and treats them as his own. But, if you’re upset with how he has been spending after losing his job, you need to speak to him. Be frank about your concerns and let him

know why you think it is important to have a prudent approach to your finances. At the same time, you should understand that having lost his job, he is probably under a lot of stress right now. So, sit down with him and have a discussion, instead of accusing him of being irresponsible and callous with your finances. You can also work out a system where the two of you jointly take decisions regarding the money that is being spent on other people and on luxuries. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in

“I think my husband has baby pangs now! He said he was just wondering but he gets all mushy around children. I am 38! And we had both decided NOT to! I am feeling cornered! Help!” — Meghna Ulu a) Ignore the nosy people. And ignore your husband’s pangs too. If he wants to have them, he should bring it up with you. b) It was a joint choice not to have a baby and it is unfair of him to ask you now, at your age, to start trying. c) It‘s been five years and situations and hopes change. Only you can decide what to do but even a small part of you wants a baby, you have options. Don’t panic! LAST WEEK: Meghna Ulu should pick option B: How does it matter?! It’s just a date. Don’t expect too much vis-a-vis a relationship, but go and have fun! Maybe you’ll meet someone who genuinely likes you there!

pansion in December, despite the rate of expansion slipping from November's five-month peak," said Williamson, adding that the rate of growth for both India and China slowed from an already "lacklustre pace". The outlook for global emerging markets remained muted in December. The HSBC Emerging Markets Future Output Index, which tracks firms' expectations for activity in 12 months' time, picked up from November's record low on the back of strengthening sentiment in Brazil and India. Overall inflationary pressures across emerging markets remained subdued, HSBC said, adding that both new orders and employment in emerging markets increased in December.

ued to remain sluggish at ~10% mark (10.6% YoY as on December 12, 2014), below the RBI's projection of 15%. Similarly, deposit growth has also been moderate at 10.2% (as on December 02, 2014). Moderation in loan growth is largely driven by subdued performance of large corporate portfolio (sub 10% growth) while retail segment continues to grow at ~15% YoY”. “We expect NIM to remain stable QoQ on back of lower interest reversal due to stable asset quality along with comfortable liquidity conditions” says Shah. margins for the sectors under our coverage are expected to be almost flat. Companies in Auto, Cement and Logistics sectors are expected to drive the overall improvement YoY, whereas those in capital goods, oil & gas and IT are expected to drag. The YoY rupee appreciation (marginal) should impact margins in the IT sector. We expect fresh slippages to stabilize during Q3FY15 while restructuring to remain elevated as the restructuring pipeline continues to pile up. Although, private sector banks are better placed with significant exposure to retail assets, we will be closely watching the corporate book - especially exposure to sensitive sectors.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 2015

Ssharad Malhotraa is currently seen as the lead in 'Maharana Pratap' on Sony which is reaching new heights on popularity. His fan following has increased. From 'Banoo Mein Teri Dulhan' to 'Maharana Pratap', his career journey has been a roller coaster. The Sandeep Hattangadi had a brief chat with him.

What are the shows you have done? My first show was 'Banoo Main Teri Dulhaan' and now after a long sabbatical I am doing the historic show 'Maharana Pratap'.

Why did you change the spelling of your name? I had met one very well know Tarot card reader through one of my friends, because things weren’t working out for me. Her name is Sushma. She convinced me to add extra S and A to my name, so I did. Even I realised changes in my life after that. I got new films after changing my name, though I don’t believe in Tarot reading so much. Now my name is Ssharad Malhotraa. Who are your favourite stars and why? My favourite Bollywood actors are Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan. They have their own recognition, superb actors, dancers and in one word, all-rounders. Three things you want to change about yourself? I am very lazy person and when I am not shooting I like to be at home. I want to develop a reading habit. I get easily influenced by people around me. That has to change.

for interesting characters.

Film actors are doing TV and TV actors are doing films. What do you think of this? When I started working initially I hadn’t seen any Bollywood actors working in television. TV is very big medium and it will always be. Both TV and Films have their own stature in the viewers' mind. You were a popular TV star during your 'Dulhan' days but without a godfather you had to struggle in Bollywood. What’s you point of view? When I started working with TV , I wanted to do films. My father and god were my backbone for my career. Luck and hard work got me to Bollywood which I believe is my godfather.

The role you would die for. The role of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan in 'Agneepath' and any Raj Kapoor role. These characters are very powerful, energetic and attractive. Viewers like these types of characters and they are very different. They both are my all-time favourite characters.

Are you keeping the bearded look in real life as well? I had kept a bearded look because of 'Ek Tera Saath', the film I am doing for past seven – eight months. I haven’t shaved because of my shooting. Even people have starting liking my bearded look, especially girls. It has made me look mature and even I like it, something different then always.

Foreigner visits ‘Shaktishaali’

The English speaking fever in the 'Shaktishaali' household is sure to leave audiences in splits as they try to impress a foreigner on Ajab Gajab Ghar Jamai this Friday, January 9 at 9.30 pm on Big Magic. A foreigner businessman pays a visit to Nani’s house but Chintu and Nani find it difficult to converse with him. But Krishna saves the day and converses in English. Proud to be the only English-speaking member of the household, he exaggerates to a level where Nani gets intimidated and orders Krishna to teach English to the entire family. Chintu feels agitated with this madness and tries to engrave the essence of Hindi but nobody seems to care.

Hate messages

Newbie Vivek Dahiya has hit it hard as an actor, by portraying the evil and conniving Rajveer in Yash Patnaik's show 'Veera' on Star Plus. The actor has always been taunted by fans for being the ‘kabab main haddi’ in the BaldevVeera love story, but the recent tweets that he received after his character killed the popular character of Nihaal Singh (Kapil Nirmal) have been simply out of the world. Vivek took them in the stride and posted them on social networking sites, describing it as a great way to start the New Year. “Yes, very true, I was dumbfounded to get this message as soon as the New Year began. But it is fair enough, as I have been getting hate messages for a while now. There is a lot of angst and anger within the audience for my character,” he said. Last time they came together as a couple on screen was for TV show 'Maryaada'. Three years later, real-life couple Ridhi Dogra and Raqesh Vashisth shared the screen space all over again for a telefilm which was telecast on New Year eve. Says Raqesh, “We played lovers and the story has the thriller element as well.” Has anything changed after the last time they worked together? “I had thought it will be strange to act in front of her because a marriage is all so real. But I am glad we haven't lost the on-screen comfort that we shared before. We share an uncanny vibe which helps us give our best when performing together,” he replies.

am currently writing two films,” he said. Puneet, who could not make it to the Colors show's new extension 'Bigg Boss Halla Bol', wished he could be there. “I wish I could be there because I am one of the most physically and mentally fit contestants. It's really unfair that the new challengers also have a chance of winning the show. If I could be there I would have given them a run for their money,” he said. Puneet, however, said he is happy that he was evicted from the show after staying there till the end as none of the above 50-year-old contestants have stayed in the

'Bigg Boss' house for more than four weeks. “I think it's a record on the show. None of the above 50 contestants stayed on the show for such a long time, Moreover, I had a grand exit and all my co-contestants gave me immense respect, which was a big thing for me,” he said. The 'Border' actor credited his wife Deepali Issar for his career more than three decades. “I am what today is all for my wife. She has been my strength through out. She made me a calm and composed person,” he added. PTI

HANDIGARH: His son and hero of the 2011 cricket World Cup may have been ignored for the next month’s mega event, but cricketer-turned-actor Yograj Singh today said the development has not affected Yuvraj Singh’s spirits as he is a tough guy who does not melt like snow and exuded confidence that he will bounce back soon. “Yuvraj is not somebody who melts like snow, I have not raised him that way. He is a tough guy, who is known to weather every storm that comes his way. What if his caravan has left him behind, he too will race ahead and bounce back soon,” the former Test cricketer told PTI today. Yograj Singh said that his son always remains in high spirits no matter how difficult the situation he may be facing.“Oh no worries, dad, I will come to Chandigarh and we will practice soon, this was Yuvraj’s message to me today,” Yograj said. When asked if he feels that history was repeating itself now that Yuvraj too had been ignored and his recent and past contributions overlooked, Yograj said, “After all, there is justice in God’s court. Even mighty rulers who had great false pride one day had to bite the dust”. When asked what would be his advice to Yuvraj at this stage will be, Yograj said, “I have taught my children to accept everything with grace and be prepared to face all kinds of situations.” “Since I was a 5-year-old, my father taught me to be fearless and take on all adversities one faces in life. And these are the traits I passed on to Yuvraj Singh as well and he too is brave and fearless,” he said.

UMBAI: Wicketkeeper Naman Ojha and captain Devendra Bundela cracked hundreds each to help Madhya Pradesh take the crucial first innings lead over Mumbai on day three of their Group A Ranji Trophy cricket tie here today. Ojha, who was the reserve wicketkeeper in the opening India-Australia Test at Adelaide when captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was unavailable, slammed a superb 155 studded with 19 fours and a six, while veteran Bundela made 115 laced with 14 fours and a six. The fourth wicket duo, which joined forces yesterday after tea, frustrated the Mumbai attack with a massive stand of 258 off 478 balls to put MP well on way to overhaul the hosts’ first innings

New Zealand completes 2-0 series victory over Sri Lanka

W

ELLINGTON: New Zealand wrapped up a 193-run victory over Sri Lanka today to complete a 2-0 win in the two-test series and continue its fine form in test cricket. Mark Craig took 4-53 as New Zealand bowled out Sri Lanka for 196 with a session to spare at the Basin Reserve. The Black Caps have not lost a test series since defeat in England in March, 2013. Since then New Zealand has record home series wins against India, the West Indies and Sri Lanka, defeated the West Indies away and has drawn series in Bangladesh and against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates. The latest Test win — having trailed by 135 runs on first innings — followed an eight-wicket victory in the first test and was its seventh in 10 tests since February. “The last little while we’ve played some outstanding cricket,” New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum said. “To be able to fight our way out of an incredibly precarious position and not just save the test, to go on and win it in the manner that we did is testament to the work these guys do off the field. “It shows how hard this team works, how hungry they are to perform also the confidence we’re starting to develop within the group.” Sri Lanka resumed at 45-1, chasing an improbable 390 to win and square the series.

Pakistan picks young squad, leaves out seniors for World Cup K

ARACHI: Dented by the absence of match-winning off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, who has been banned for illegal action, Pakistan today picked up a battery of five pace bowlers and two spinners for its squad for the cricket World Cup where it has been placed in the same qualifying group as India. The selectors opted to repose faith on a young team ignoring senior players like Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal and Mohammad Sami for the mega-event to be held in Australia and New Zealand from February 14 to March 29. Considering the pacy wickets Down Under, the selectors have chosen five pacers — Mohammad Irfan, Junaid Khan, Ehsan Adil, Sohail Khan and Wahab Riaz. Leftarmer Yasir Shah and Shahid

Afridi are the two spinners in the squad. Ajmal, who has led Pakistan’s attack in all three formats of the game since 2009, was suspended in September last after failing a test of his bowling action. He subsequently withdrew from the squad claiming that his effectiveness had been lessened by the changes made to his action. The six member selection committee, after intense deliberations with captain Misbah-ul-Haq and head coach Waqar Younis in Karachi, put its confidence in a bunch of young players to spearhead Pakistan’s campaign. Among the 15, batsmen Sohaib Maqsood and Haris Sohail and bowlers Junaid Khan, Muhammad Irfan, Sohail Khan, Ehsan Adil and Yasir Shah have yet to play in Australia or New Zealand.

“We have picked a balanced squad without any personal likes or dislikes and we considered all options without any grouses,” chief selector, Moin Khan told a news conference at the national stadium. He said the selectors had decided to lay faith in the youngsters keeping in mind the conditions, climate, opposition and travel schedule of the team in the World Cup. Sohail Khan, a right-arm fast bowler, has appeared in just two Tests and five Oneday internationals. Pakistan World Cup squad: Muhammad Hafeez, Ahmed Shehzad, Younis Khan, Misbah-ulHaq (Capt), Haris Sohail, Umar Akmal, Sohaib Maqsood, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shahid Afridi, Junaid Khan, Muhammad Irfan, Sohail Khan, Wahab Riaz, Ehsan Adil and Yasir Shah.

YDNEY: He managed to notch up a five-wicket haul but Indian medium pacer Mohammad Shami today said it was tough to bowl on the flat deck here and his team’s bowlers should not be criticised for conceding 572 runs to Australia in the ongoing fourth and final cricket Test. Shami managed figures of five for 112 in the Australian first innings, which closed at 572/7 after which Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul helped India reach 71/1 at close of play. “It’s tough for fast bowlers to bowl on a flat pitch. It is important to maintain your line and length. When it becomes easier for batsmen to play shots, it becomes tough for us,” said Shami. “It’s not correct to say that we are struggling. If they are scoring 450-plus runs we too are scoring 400-plus runs. There isn’t much difference. All I can say is hard luck. “Australian bowlers are bowling in their home grounds, so they are used to the conditions here and are aware of what line and length they should be bowling. We tried the same thing but they batted well. So it’s all part of the game, sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t,” he added. Bhuvneshwar Kumar played his first Test of the series after recovering from an ankle injury but returned figures of 0-122, looking down

Shami, however, denied that his teammate was not match fit. “The team is decided based on fitness only. You may have noticed he doesn’t have that sort of pace in the first place. He is a line and length bowler and relies on swing. It is such a slow wicket, and if you judge him on his pace then it’s not fair to question his fitness,” he said. When asked if non-stop cricket left players with sufficient time for recovery, Shami

replied, “You have seen how many matches are happening these days. We don’t have the time to think about it. Whichever format we play, we start working on our bowling accordingly and it doesn’t matter whether it’s the red or white ball. “Also, these days you watch so much cricket that there is no need to teach someone, you just have to plan once you grab the ball.” India still trail Australia by 501 runs but Rohit Sharma (40) and KL Rahul (31) held

steady at the crease, especially the latter, as he appeared calmer than the two poor shots he played in his debut Test at the MCG. “It’s not fair to judge a player from just one innings. If someone has six bad innings, even then it doesn’t mean he is a bad player. It’s the same Rahul who played today and he still remains the same if you compare his previous innings. It was hard luck for him in Melbourne and all I can hope is that he will play well going ahead,”

said the bowler. Shami is part of the 15man World Cup squad announced on yesterday and said playing against Australia right now and in the upcoming tri-series would help him for the big event. “There will be some advantage for us having been here since the last three months leading up to the World Cup. Surely that will benefit us. We came early so we have a fair idea about the conditions here — bounce, carry etc,” he signed off.

Crowe picks New Zealand vs Chappell, Clarke criticise Kohli’s tactics South Africa World Cup final S

W

ELLINGTON: Cricket great Martin Crowe has picked a New Zealand v South Africa final in the World Cup starting next month, saying Wednesday he was determined to follow the tournament after once fearing he would not live out 2014.Crowe, acknowledged as New Zealand’s finest batsman, made his prediction as he revealed details of his battle with cancer. He appeared to have beaten a form of lymphoma about two years ago, but said late last year the disease had returned. Talking to journalists at Eden Park in Auckland, where once he dominated with the bat, Crowe said he

wanted to be remembered as “genuine, real, authentic, not false, not masked”. He said he had Australia down as World Cup favourites but felt New Zealand and South Africa were capable of surprising. “I’m picking a New Zealand v South Africa final. That’s my gut feeling with South Africa due as well. We are going to win it one day and we’re pretty good at home,” Crowe said.Although doctors wanted Crowe to be in hospital, he said he now preferred to shun continued chemotherapy and wanted to stay home and try natural remedies. Former All Black Grant Fox had given him supplements made from sea cucumber from Pacific Islands. “The chemo is brutal and it was going to be a 100-day vigil so I thought it would be better if I just chilled at home and so far, so good,” he said. “I am standing at the moment. I didn’t necessarily think I would get through to the end of 2014 but I am here, I am feeling OK.”

YDNEY: Just into his second Test as India captain, Virat Kohli has come under severe criticism for his tactics from Australian batting greats Ian Chappell and Michael Clarke for the way he shuffled his bowlers during the ongoing fourth and final cricket Test here. Former captain Chappell and Clarke, who led Australia in the first Test but later ruled out of the series due to a hamstring injury, said while commentating that they were surprised by Kohli’s certain field placements and change of bowlers on the opening day

of the final Test here. Just after tea on the first day yesterday, the three seamers — Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar —- were called on for one-over spells from the Paddington end as spinner Ravichandran Ashwin held up the other. Chappell said giving just one over to a bowler exposed Kohli’s impatience, as India were struggling to get Australian wickets. “It sent out a message of impatience to the bowlers. And I think that contributed to the bad bowling. But I don’t understand this sort of impa-

tience; one-over spells, that’s not giving the bowler a chance at all,” Chappell was quoted as saying in ‘Sydney Morning Herald’. Clarke also seemed to be baffled by Kohli’s tactics. “I don’t think I have a reason to give you why Virat has done that. I think in the shorter form of the game, T20 cricket, the one-over spells can work so a batter doesn’t get too used to a particular bowler,” he said. “But in a Test match I don’t know the exact reason... Maybe it was to try something different to get a breakthrough.”

YDNEY: Injured Australian captain Michael Clarke today said that his recovery from hamstring surgery was ahead of schedule though it’s still unclear whether he will be fit to play the entire World Cup, beginning on February 14. The 33-year-old Clarke, who is expected to be named skipper of the 15man Australian squad when it is officially announced on Sunday, said he had begun running since the surgery three weeks ago. Clarke overcame a left hamstring injury to play the opening Adelaide Test against India. But he suffered a flare-up of his degenerative back condition on day one and retired hurt. However, he returned to the crease next day and completed a courageous hundred. Clarke then injured his right hamstring while fielding on the final day, with scans ruling him out of the rest of the four-Test series. He had previously said he’s unlikely to be fit for Australia’s opening match of the World Cup against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on February 14. Speaking on Channel Nine’s television coverage of the fourth and final Test against India at Sydney Cricket Ground, Clarke said he was experiencing a quicker-than-expected recovery. “It’s going well, it’s feeling really good. I’m slowly getting back into my running, but I’m not running too quickly.”

Smith disapproves Starc’s send-off celebration S

YDNEY: Mitchell Starc’s send-off celebration after dismissing Indian opener Murali Vijay did not find approval from Steve Smith with the Australian skipper demanding calmness from his bowlers. Starc, who replaced Mitchell Johnson in the ongoing Sydney Test, had Vijay caught behind in the third ball of the Indian innings. The left-arm paceman gave a hard look to Vijay as he

shouted in zest with pumped up fists, celebrating the early success. However, young captain Smith was not impressed with the act of his fast bowler. “I don’t think it’s a good part of the game to send batsmen off. I didn’t see what Starc did. I was busy celebrating myself. But it’s not a part of the game that needs to go ahead. I’m sure our players will stay pretty calm when we

get wickets from now on,“ Smith said at the press conference. Before the match, Australian opener David Warner had asked for send-offs to dismissed batsmen to be stopped and Indian skipper Virat Kohli had agreed with the same. While the Indian bowlers were quiet throughout the first two days, decorum was broken by Starc.

YDNEY: Prolific Murali Vijay’s cheap dismissal added to India’s woes before it reached 71 for one in response to another massive total by Australia which notched up 572 for 7 declared on the second day of the fourth and final cricket Test here today. The Indians suffered a huge jolt when Vijay was dismissed for a third-ball duck but Lokesh Rahul (31) and Rohit Sharma (40) ensured that there were no further setbacks till close of play on yet another disappointing day for the visitors. The second day’s highlight was Australian captain Steven Smith notching up his fourth century of the series to join Sir Donald Bradman and Jacques Kallis as only the third batsman to achieve the feat of four successive hundreds in a series. A special summer for me: Smith By Chetan Narula

Smith equals Bradman, Kallis

S

YDNEY: The success against India this summer has been outstanding from a team and individual point of view, said Australian skipper Steve Smith, who became only the second batsman to score four successive hundreds in a four-Test series today. Smith today scored 117 runs — his fourth Test hundred of the series — to join South Africa’s Jacques Kallis as the only batsman to score four successive hundreds in a four-Test series. “It’s been a pretty special summer for me personally obviously with some of the results that I have got. I always look at the team first and I think that the success the team over the last little bit has had has been outstanding and we are in another good position in this Test match,” said Smith. “It was another special moment, to get a hundred at the SCG, home ground for me and my favourite place to play.” Smith also became the second highest Australian runscorer in a four-Test series. He fell short by 9 runs of the highest score of 706 runs held by Ricky Ponting, scored

against India in 2003-04. There was another record registered today when Joe Burns reached his maiden Test fifty as it was the first time that Australia had the top-six batsmen all getting half-centuries in the same innings. As such, India became the team to allow four opposition teams this feat.

YDNEY: Australian cricket captain Steve Smith today equalled the legendary Sir Donald Bradman and South African allrounder Jacques Kallis’ record of scoring four consecutive hundreds in a Test series with his knock of 117 against India here today. The 25-year-old, who is playing his debut series as captain, has been in imperious form in the four-match rubber and has taken his overall tally to eight hundreds from 26 matches. With his 117 on the second day of the fourth Test against India, Smith joined Bradman and Kallis as only the third batsman to achieve the rare feat. His other centuries came in Adelaide (unbeaten 162), Brisbane (133) and Melbourne (192). Bradman fetched his hundreds against South Africa in 1931-32, while Kallis’ accomplished the feat against the West Indies in 200304. Smith has piled up 698 runs in the series so far, averaging an awe-inspiring 139.6.
