CABINET DECISION TO TAKE BACK SOCIO-POLITICAL CASES AGAINST ACTIVISTS, POLITICIANS By Prashant Hamine

n a major cabinet decision taken yesterday, the state cabinet decided to withdraw all cases of socio-political nature filed till November 1, 2014 against activists and politicians. This decision will not include criminal cases. Earlier, as per a Government Resolution of 2010, the government had withdrawn all such pending cases till May 2005. In an another decision, the state cabinet decided to give temporary powers of Tree Authority to municipal commissioners and chief executive officers of all civic bodies until the

Tree Authority is not set up as per the state tree conservation and protection act of 1975. Later speaking to newspersons at his Mantralaya office, Minister for Transport Diwakar Raote disclosed that the government will probe the issuing of 40,000 taxi permits by the previous Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) at the fag end of its tenure. He said that the government had received several complaints regarding discrepancies in documents submitted and issuing of permits to outsiders. Commenting on the recent rape incident in the Uber Cab in New Delhi, Raote said that

the government plans to make installation of RFID tags in all such private cabs. He added that the Transport department will also take action against Tehsildars who have been found guilty of issuing senior citizen cards to young people for senior citizen reservation facilities in State Transport buses. Raote also voiced his opposition to the Central government law on stage or point to point transport stating that such a law will curb the monopoly of the State Road Transport Corporation. He said that the situation in southern states is different than in Maharashtra. Speaking to newspersons

at his Mantralaya office, Minister for Industries Subhash Desai disclosed that the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has approved 130 industrial projects in the state. These projects entail an investment of Rs 6,266 crore and will generate 14,000 jobs. Most of these industrial projects will come up in places like Patalganga, Dindori, Ambernath, Baramati, Jalgaon, Waluj, Butibori and 17 other locations. Some of the prominent foreign investors include – IFB Automative (Germany), Tag (Switzerland), Dongyang (Korea), Monopol Colours (Italy), Datwyler Pharma (Belgium) and others.

the 1.2 multiple factor, it will mean a reduction of another 10 per cent, making it a huge 22 per cent reduction,” said a senior civic official. The BMC has already given refunds to several holders as their property tax has come down in the new tax regime. They will have to be given additional refunds, he added. Considering the loss of Rs 300 crore, BMC property tax

revenues will be dropped by Rs 1,200 crore in the fouryear period from 2010 to 2014 and the refunds will have to be paid from the estimated revenues of 2014-15, said civic officials. Under the capital valuebased system, the BMC has sent property tax bills worth Rs 447 crore to about 3,300 new lands and buildings in the city. Their revenue collec-

tion will also come down by Rs 90 crore. “Under the new system, the property tax of many properties has already come down. There is no point in slashing their taxes further causing a dent in revenues,” said a top civic official. However, Congress corporator Pravin Chheda said, “This is injustice to lakhs of middle-class residents who

were likely to be benefitted by the reduction in property tax. The BMC in the act had said that they will calculate property tax based on capital value using the carpet area of the flat, but they started sending out bills based on the built-up area. Instead of easing the burden on people, the BMC is just looking at the revenues,” he said.

hose who are expecting further reduction in their property tax bills after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) decides to charge carpet area wise, are likely to be disappointed. The BMC has said that the removal of 1.2 factor used for multiplication of ready reckoner rates is not feasible, as it will lead to reduction in the civic body's revenues. The Bombay High Court had directed the BMC to check whether the formula to calculate the property tax can be used on the basis of carpet area of the flat rather that the built-up area. Following this, the BMC had submitted a new formula based on carpet area, but to balance out the amount, the civic officials proposed to multiply the ready reckoner rates by 1.2 to keep the rates intact. However, corporators had demanded removal of the

multiple rate of 1.2 so that people are benefitted. However, according to the civic officials, by affecting the change, the BMC stands to lose around Rs 300 crore every year in property tax collections. “While implementing the capital value-based system from 2010, we had anticipated around 12 per cent reduction in property tax collections. But if we remove

‘Dead man’ running for PMship

Voting for your country’s next leader is a crucial decision. Especially here in India. So what if a “dead person” ran for office? It's not the most surprising situation. For the past nine years, Santosh Kumar Singh has been trying to prove to officials that he is alive. The only reason he wants to run for prime minister is to help people realise that he is in fact not dead. He filed nomination papers for the PM's post to prove that he is alive. He doesn't actually want to be the PM. All he wants to do is

prove he’sm alive. If the government cannot declare him alive, he said, then it should kill me and issue a real death certificate in his name. The 32-year-old cook left his village in 2000 for a job in Mumbai. He fell in love with a Dalit woman. When he was about to introduce his bride to his family, they disowned him. Soon after, he was declared dead. They filed a missing person's report, which was later changed into a death report. The villagers even conducted post-funeral ceremonies and gave alms to the poor to prove he was dead.

hiv Sena, a coalition partner of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Union government, state government and the city civic body, opposed the latter's ambitious project of installing LED lights in the city. Shiv Sena opined that fair tender process will not be compromised despite the interested companies being Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) of the Government of India. Citing the sovereignty of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Shiv Sena legislator and councilor Sunil Prabhu said, “Be it a PSU or a private company, there should not be any compromise with the tendering procedure in the civic body.” While addressing the general body meeting of the civic body, Prabhu said, “The civic body has a legitimate policy to procure logistic and material supply to meet its requirements. The activists protested by raising antiMunde slogans and asked him to go back as they did not want him to take darshan at the samadhi. Despite appeals by the local police, the activists refused to budge or allow passage to Munde's motorcade to pass. A visibly upset Munde, the estranged nephew of former Union Minister late Gopinath Munde, termed the protests as politically motivated before deciding to forgo the darshan. The golden jubilee

Dhananjay Munde of Bhagwan Baba's samadhi is currently being celebrated and is slated to end on Tuesday with a grand function to be attended by top political leaders of the state. “Whenever I achieve anything in life, I go to Bhagwangad and express my gratitude. I was welcomed all along the route, except near the temple. The manner in which I was prevented from taking darshan is condemnable,” Munde said before leaving the venue. Munde quit the BJP when his uncle Gopinath Munde was alive and also contested the recent Assembly elections from Parli-Vaijnath constituency against his cousin Pankaja Gopinath Munde, who is now a minister in the state.

the BJP-led state government. Thackeray was speaking at a press conference to announce an exhibition of about 70 photographs taken by him, which would be open at Jehangir Art gallery here from January 7 to 12. Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain will inaugurate it tomorrow. Proceeds of the exhibition will go to the distressed farmers in the `suicide belt' of Maharashtra, the Sena chief said. "If this small gesture saves the lives of even one or two farmers, I will consider myself fortunate," he said. "This exhibition will feature photographs of ancient temples in Cambodia. They were breathtaking. It reminds me of our culture that is spread around the world. I also got a chance to shoot polar bears in sub-zero temperatures in Canada. It was very difficult shooting these beautiful animals as whenever I removed my gloves to shoot them, my hands froze. It took a lot of time for my hands to get normal again," Thackeray said. "The other highlight will be infra-red photography. What makes it special is that while shooting, we do not let light pass through camera lens.”

hiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray has decided to donate the proceeds of his six-day Photo Exhibition on wild life, infrared, heritage and portrait photographs towards drought relief measures. Speaking to newspersons here yesterday, he announced the setting up of a trust to manage the disbursal of aid to farmers affected by hail storm, drought and unseasonal rains. Thackeray remarked that the natural disaster is so huge and is making government efforts fall short and hence he was lending his own might to the government efforts. The theme of this year's Photo Exhibition is infra-red photography. He further remarked that if he could help save the lives of

farmers, the satisfaction would be huge. Thackeray stated that this exhibition was after a span of 11 years and will run from January 7 to January 12. His earlier exhibitions of forts of Maharashtra titled 'Maharashtra Desha' in 2004 was followed by one on the pilgrimage of Pandharpur titled 'Pahava Vitthal' which received rave reviews and were later converted into books. This time around, the Sena president has put up an exhibition of 70 odd photographs of Polar Bears of Antartica, ancient temples of Ankor Vat in Cambodia and portraits of some prominent personalities. The infra-red photographs include those of Rajabhai Tower at University of Mumbai and the Brihanmumbai Municipal CorporaShiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray at a press conference on the exhibition of his photography in the city on tion (BMC) headquarters. dvocate Vijay Gaikwad, accused of making defamatory remarks about a particular minority community, was granted judicial custody on Monday by the Bhoiwada court, till January 19. Gaikwad was arrested on January 2 and sent to police custody till January 5. He was produced in the court on Monday with high security. The complainant, Moin Khan, told the ADC, “We have been directed by the court to file a reply to Gaikwad's bail application. Even though bail was granted to the accused, he was arrested for his action. A concrete message has been sent to society. Similar antisocial elements will think twice before hampering the peace and harmony in society and hurting anyone's sentiments. We will approach the higher court if the accused gets bail.” Advocate Yusuf Khan who is representing the complainant said, “We have moved an intervention application, but we are only allowed to make written submissions. On Tuesday we are going to request the court

to grant us permission to make oral arguments. We will also file the reply to the bail application moved by the accused.” The Facebook remarks that Vijay Gaikwad made had resulted in extreme rage and anger from the community he addressed, which is why

he had to be brought to court under high security. People from the said minority community were present in huge numbers at the court to represent their anger and to oppose the bail application of Vijay Gaikwad. The matter shall be addressed again in January 6.

Heritage hocus pacus stops development F

INALLY, the BMC is taking a right decision with regard to the preservation of heritage structures. From the proposed BMC's heritage list, several buildings have been dropped. A beginning has been made in Chembur where as many as 20 buildings have been dropped from the list. What has remind in the list now is a temple and a church and also two other structures. A sensible approach has been adopted. There are hundreds of so-called heritage structures in Mumbai. There are many buildings which are on the brink of a collapse. Repairs are prohibited. The buildings look like so many ghosts of the past. The whole of Ballard Estate which could become a commercial centre cannot undergo any change. Thousands of offices can come up if many old buildings are dropped from the heritage list. Mumbai city needs to be developed, and it requires huge commercial space in this regard. For a long time, we have been mesmerised by the heritage hocus pocus and on flimsy grounds, we have decided to preserve them. It is time the BMC become a little more pragmatic and ended the hysteria about heritage.

OME 19 years ago, Danish national Kim Peter Davy dropped arms over Purulia, West Bengal, at the instance of the Government of India. New Delhi’s reported purpose was to arm the Naxalites, a militant fringe of leftists, to oust the communist government in West Bengal that had been ruling for more than two decades. Davy has admitted in a recorded interview that he did so at the instance of a Member of Indian Parliament. He still has not disclosed the name of the MP. Joginder Singh, the retired Director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has confirmed the report. But he too has refused to name the MP who was apparently a Congressman because the P.V. Narasimha Rao government was in power at that time.

Bangladesh. In fact, it only goes on to prove the allegation by Islamabad that the entire uprising in the then East Pakistan was sponsored by India. Though the true motive is shrouded in mystery and conjecture, the BBC after investigation, alleged that the arms were intended for the so-called socio-spiritual organization Ananda Marga. This has been disputed by Kim Davy who claimed the central government itself was behind the arms drop to counter the CPI(M) cadres. An Indian court in 1977 determined that the Ananda Marga group was indeed the intended recipient of the guns and ammunition. Based on the pilot’s testimony, along with other evidence such as a photograph of the Ananda Marga headquarters on the aircraft, the judge ruled: “As per the materials available on record, I hold that it has been esThis disclosure made by the intrepid Arnab tablished that the places where the arms were Goswami on Times Now channel has not targeted to be dropped were of Ananda Marbeen carried by the print media, including the Times of India, which owns the channel. “The central government saw and approved the plans to arm the defence of these innocent people,” Davy told television channel. Davy also named Pappu Yadav as the Bihar MP who had helped him escape from India. He said he was in direct contact with the MP “who told me he was in further contact with the PM’s office.” It is difficult to say why the channel’s own paper or, for that matter, the entire press has not pursued the story. BETWEEN THE LINES

T is important to know about interpersonal relationships. What really disturbs interpersonal relationships? The relationship gets disturbed when disagreement begins. Just look at yourself. Have you always agreed with yourself? You had some idea yesterday; today you may have a different idea. Five years back you had other ideas that do not necessarily agree with the ideas that you have today. So when you can have disagreement with yourself, why should it not happen with someone else? The ‘someone’ you have a disagreement with is just a photocopy of your old or the new self. You need to take a look at your own thought and emotional patterns; there is a rhythm in them. And there is a rhythm in the consciousness. You need to find a harmony between all these rhythms within you and that’s what is called spirituality. Spirituality is not just fantasising; it’s observing your own existence. Have you thoroughly known your body? When you see someone, you can see their physical form but have you experienced your own body? Experiencing your own body, your breath, your mind, your emotion and the source of your life is meditation. Meditation is experiencing the life force and being conscious of it; and it is done effortlessly. Mind and body function on completely opposite laws. In the realm of the mind, effortlessness is the key. You cannot remember something through effort. The moment you

Changing mindsets relax, the memory comes back. Creativity, intelligence and memory — all these faculties within us happen effortlessly. However, in the realm of the body, you have to put in effort. You can build muscles only when you put effort. How do you listen? The sounds come and

MATTER & SPIRIT fall on the eardrums but if the mind is elsewhere, can you hear? You are listening through that faculty in you that is called the mind. When you are listening, you are either agreeing or disagreeing. Notice whether you are saying yes or no. This something by which you say yes or no is called the intellect. It is the same consciousness that functions as man (mind), buddhi (intellect), chitta (consciousness) and ahankaara (ego). Our ancient people have called the four different faculties as Antahkaran Chadushtaya. Similarly, if you observe memory, it clings onto something that is negative. You will forget ten compliments from someone, but cling onto an insult. This needs to be reversed; and the process of reversing this tendency of the memory from clinging on to the negative and moving to something positive is called yoga. Yoga makes

cratic conspiracy or was the Congress party’s considered thinking? Whatever the case, it is still not too late to get at the bottom of the truth. The very credibility of the Centre is at stake. New Delhi owes an explanation on another issue and needs to come clean. A well-educated Muslim lady has appealed to me to give her the India that we inherited from the British. That is some 68 years ago. The scenario has changed from a liberal democracy to a religious-driven polity. The government may not be an active participant in effecting the change but Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s blessings are there. His inclusive growth slogan appears to be only a cover for his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to destroy the pluralistic fabric of the country.

Naturam Godse I wish, I could help bring back the ethos of our national struggle, that is, secularism. But the militant fringe of the BJP, if not the party itself, has come to develop reverence even for Nathuram Godse, who killed Mahatma Gandhi. Some have even proposed the installation of his statue. This kind of thinking is making inroads in our pluralistic ideology because the faith in secularism has weakened. Otherwise, it is difficult to explain vandalism against even a film that exposed the godmen. I concede that Modi had no clue of communalism that has been sought to be injected into the whole incident. But he has not condemned, much less arrested those who indulged in the hooliganism. He dare not take action against the RSS which is now part of politics, instead of being a mere guide. What has shocked me is that the government has not prepared to take action against the extreme elements which may not be saffronizing the atmosphere, but definitely polarizing the society to an extent which was never seen before. Therefore, the only answer to the question raised by the Muslim lady is to unite the disparate forces to re-enunciate the values which motivated us to pursue the core of the national movement. you like a child again. It not only revives your nature, it also keeps your heart and mind young and bright. Yoga improves perception, observation and expression. For maintaining interpersonal relationships, you have to first have a relationship with yourself. Your relationship with yourself is called integrity. If you have no relationship with yourself, that’s called lack of integrity. Secondly, being informal keeps your interpersonal relationship strong, for it gives space for mistakes to happen. You cannot expect perfection in any relationship or situation. In life there is no set formula. When you think that you are very honest, you become a little stiff inside without even knowing it. You point your finger towards others and become intolerant. When you recognise that there are flaws in you, you are then able to accommodate the flaws in other persons. That’s why it is said, ‘‘do a good deed and forget about it’’. It is not only your vices or bad qualities that will harm you. Even your good qualities can make you stiff, rude and angry. Meditation is the only way you can transcend the negative thoughts and then positive thoughts will come spontaneously and automatically. Stress and tension cause negative attitude. If you have a positive state of mind, you become creative and successful in anything you do. — Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on Twitter @SriSri www.artofliving.org

Suspiciously coloured flames A couple of days after the mid-sea blast of the Pakistani boat, experts are expressing doubts about the aborted terror attack theory: The colour of the flames, as seen from the TV films, was red, indicating that it was due to fire set to petrol/diesel dumps. Inflamed explosives emit white coloured flames. The incident, it appears, has taken place in international waters. WE all know that Virat Kohli has been an aggressive guy since the start of his career. MANY wonder what the connection is between female foeticide, monogamy, jihad, terrorism. Plenty. Monogamy is viewed as something moral, but its origins lie in statecraft. Ages ago, rulers realised that one of the best ways to maintain harmony was to impose responsibility on men. And that responsibility came through marriage and children. And to ensure that everyone was responsible and that all men had equal women to marry, monogamy became law. But in cultures where polygamy is allowed, some men usurp more of the other gender leaving many men without a partner. And as sociologists would confirm, a class of men without responsibility is the most dangerous force to any ruling regime. Now would that be the reason that terrorism has found roots in such places and is disguised as a religious war? Another potential danger to security which could also take the form of terrorism – female foeticide – which has been examined in several well known studies. So does the solution for terrorism lie in bedrooms?

AS per a report in a section of the print media, the talks for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir between the PDP and the BJP are on course. The latter has reportedly agreed to most of the demands of the former as mentioned by the PDP in its pre-conditions. One them is said to be to follow the process of dialogue-only with Pakistan to solve the vexed 68-year-old issue. If that is true, then it goes against the Union Defence Minister’s recent message to the BSF to retaliate heavily against the border firing in the state by the Pakistan rangers.

Join forces WITH the all round electoral successes achieved by the BJP across the country, all secular parties have realised the dire need to come together to thwart the onward march of the communal forces. The impending Delhi Assembly elections can provide them with the much needed platform for the purpose. Two of the three main contenders for power – the AAP and Congress – have reportedly started announcing the list of their respective party candidates. This way, they will only succeed in dividing the secular votes, thereby enabling the BJP to come to power with a majority of its own. It is time the Congress and the AAP enter into some sort of electoral adjustment to share power in the state. Other secular parties, with not much stake in the capital, like SP, RJD, BSP, JD(U), JD(S), can then extend their support to the candidates jointly fielded by the Congress and AAP.

ittle gestures go a long way. This concept drew an army of dedicated professionals including media-persons from across the country to team-up and form 'JalDhara' – an NGO dedicated towards water conservation. On Sunday, the NGO launched 'Jal-Doot' – an unique and innovative project to conserve every precious little drop of water by fixing problem of dripping taps across the households in Mira Bhayandar. Under the ambitious 'Jal-Doot' project, residents of the twin-city will now be able to fix their leaking taps by dialing Helpline numbers – 022-29451180/90 and that too free of cost. The helpline numbers and the NGO’s website, www.jaldharaindia.com were formally inaugurated on Sunday, by Women and Child Welfare Minister, Vidya Thakur in the presence of award winning author, cartoonist and passionate water conservator, Aabid Surti and Padmashri Brahmadeo Ram Pandit. Residents worried about

leaking taps can now call helpline numbers and help will reach their doorsteps free-of-cost. “Once we receive a call, professional plumbers will not only go to the place and fix the problem free of cost but will also impart training to one of the family members so that he or she is in a position to fix the problem if it reemerges again,” said Bharat Mishra. It should be noted that as against the requirement of 170 mld, the twin-city which sprawls across 79.4 sq km with a populace of more than 10 lakh has a total supply of 136 mld out of which 86 mld comes from Shahad Temghar (STEM) water supply authority and the remaining 50 mld from the MIDC. The total distribution losses and thefts are to the order of 10 per cent. Although the MBMC plans to work on the secondary network to plug leakages, there is no concentrated effort to plug leakages in households, where large quantities of clean water are wasted. It’s the same water for which crores are spent for purification.

>> Read our article to find out all about healthy figs

FIGS Fresh figs are a winter fruit that we’re obsessed with at the moment, but the sweet taste of the pulpy, smooth fruit is not the only reason we’re reaching out for another one. They are filled with antioxidants, nutrients and enzymes, making them the perfect winter health food. Dev Goswami & Sara Shah tell you more about their health benefits

Fresh & healthy

DiD you know?

Dried figs are available throughout the year, but there are several reasons why you should pick up a box of fresh figs as soon as winter rolls around. Take a look at the several health benefits that the fruit offers: n lower your blood pressure: Figs are rich in potassium, which is a mineral that helps maintain stable blood pressure. A lack of potassium, coupled with an excess intake of sodium (a common ingredient in processed food) can cause hypertension. Eating a few fresh figs (or a handful of dried figs) every 2-3 days is a great way to add potassium to your diet. n Fight your cravings: The next time you’re craving something sweet, we recommend you pop a fig into your mouth. Apart from their delicious taste, figs are rich in fibre, which will fill you up and stop you from overeating. n lower your insulin: If you are diabetic, you can use the insulin-lowering properties of fig leaves to reduce the amount of insulin injections that you require. Studies have shown that a liquid extract, prepared using fig leaves, can reduce your need for insulin. n help your heart: While the heart benefits of figs are still being researched, a few studies conducted on the relation between the fruit and your heart’s health show that figs can lower triglycerides, a type of fat that clogs your arteries. Moreover, fig leaves can also fight the growth of certain types of cancer cells.

n reduce your risk of breast cancer: A study conducted with an average of 51,000 women showed that consuming fruit fibre lowers your risk of suffering from breast cancer by 34%. Researchers aren’t sure which property out of those that are present in figs is responsible for lowering the risk of breast cancer, but according to the study, consuming fibre-rich fruits such as apples, dates and figs on a regular basis can help prevent breast cancer in the long run. n Figs are one of the few fruits that are mentioned several times in the Bible. They are also mentioned in a Babylonian hymn book that dates back to 2000 BC. Several people believe that it was actually a fig, and not an apple, that was consumed by Adam and Eve. n Olympic athletes have used figs as training food in the past. The fruit was also presented as laurels to winners. n Fig trees do not flower. The blossoms are located inside the fruit and are pollinated by evolved fig wasps, which are exclusive to fig trees. These wasps die and decompose inside the fruit itself. n In many cultures, figs are considered to be a symbol of fertility and abundance. n One dried fig contains as much calcium as a single egg. n Although figs are rich in fibre and are often used as a laxative, it’s the enzymes that are present inside it that are responsible for its digestive health benefits.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JANUARY 6, 2015 >> Figs can benefit your skin as well as your health

However, if you want to avoid using sugar or store-bought, preservative-laden options such as barbecue sauce, use figs instead. While the flavour won’t be as overwhelming, adding a couple of fig halves to your pot roast chicken will give it a subtle hint of sweetness while keeping it healthy. Fig sauce is also a good way to balance out a pungent or spicy dish.

yourself, you can drink fig juice. This will promote healthy hair growth and increase collagen production, which will give your scalp and roots a healthy boost.

Beauty Benefits Rich in antioxidants, figs are very good your skin. Here’s how they can benefit you: n Moisturise: Figs have great moisturising properties that make them the perfect addition to your skincare routine. They hydrate your skin, and also help lock in moisture for longer, giving you healthy, glowing skin. So, include a natural fig extract face scrub as part of your skincare routine. n exfoliate: The outer skin of this fruit is a good exfoliant and helps get rid of dead skin cells. Apart from its rough texture, the skin also contains active enzymes, which help clear up your skin. So, peel the skin off a ripe fig and scrub your face using the flesh inside. Doing this regularly will also help prevent acne. n face mask: With its active enzymes and moisturising properties figs can be used as a face mask to clear blemishes and acne while giving your skin a healthy glow. Simply cut a fig in half, scoop out the flesh and mash it with a fork until it resembles a smooth paste. Apply this paste on to your face, let it sit for five minutes and then rinse it off with water. n for your hair: Natural fig extract is a wonderful moisturiser for your hair as well, and has the added benefit of not weighing it down. If you still want the benefits of fig, but don’t want to go through the trouble of making the extract

Figs offer great moisture retention, making them an excellent replacement for fat in baked foods. You can make a fig paste and use it instead of oil or butter. All you have to do is pop eight to ten ripe figs in a blender with ¾th cup water and blend it together until it forms a fine, smooth paste. Remember to reduce the quantity by half of what you would use, if you were to use butter or oil.

interesting uses of figs Apart from eating them as a snack and using them in your dessert recipes, here are a few other ways that you can use this fruit.

Mouth wash Eating a few figs after a meal can help combat bad breath. You can also soak their leaves in a cup of water and use it as a mouthwash — but, this doesn’t mean that you can skip using toothpaste! Apart from its bad breath alleviating properties, its vitamin B content also helps keep your mouth healthy and disease-free. What’s more, it’s calcium-rich and will keep your teeth strong and healthy.

Make your breakfast healthier As we mentioned earlier, figs help diabetics cut down on their insulin requirements. However, you don’t need to eat the fruit to reap this benefit — what you actually need are its leaves. Grind fig leaves with water to form a paste and then spread a spoonful over toast every morning for a healthy, anti-insulin boost.

add a sweet touch to your meal Some recipes need something sweet to help them stand out.

Buying & storing figs Remember that figs spoil easily and have a short shelf life, so you need to store them carefully. You should buy figs only a day or two before you plan to use them because they will spoil if they’re stored for too long. While buying figs, look for those that have a rich, deep colour and are slightly tender to the touch — but remember that they shouldn’t feel mushy. You can also smell them to ensure that they are fresh — a subtle, sweet fragrance indicates that they are ripe, while a sour smell means that they are spoilt or on the verge of getting spoilt. Figs can be stored in your refrigerator for a day or two, but make sure that you keep them in covered containers to prevent them from drying out. On the other hand, dried figs can be stored for months on end. However, ensure that the container that you use is air-tight, because excess exposure to moisture can make them hard and dry.

ARE WE EATING THE REQUIRED AMOUNT OF PROTEIN EVERY DAY? According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) for Indian adults is 1 grams per kilogram body weight every day. This means that an adult weighing 60 Kilograms requires 60 grams of protein every day. To get this much protein one will have to eat either 10 eggs or 250 grams chicken or 400 grams fish (Rohu) or 300 grams of almonds or will have to drink 2 kilograms of cow milk. This might be a lot to eat every day and therefore you may be having a gap of this important nutrient in your daily diet. A child requires more protein (1.2 gm/ kg body weight/day) when compared to an adult since he/ she requires it for growth and development. Pregnant women require a further increase (1.5 gm/kg body weight) in protein since they require it for the growth and development of the growing fetus and the supporting tissues. Protein is the basic building block for muscles, bones & other body components and is essential for body’s growth & maintenance. Our body goes through wear and tear every day and uses protein to build & repair tissues including hair, skin & nails. All food contains nutrients, however, all nutrients are not present in one type of food. Therefore one should eat variety of fruits, vegetables and other food types to help meet the recommended dietary intake

of essential nutrients like protein. Good nutrition, based on healthy eating, is an essential component that helps you to stay healthy and be active. A healthy lifestyle that includes doing regular exercises, supported by adequate sleep and an appropriate intake of a balanced diet rich in nutrition is of prime importance. « 10 ways to: Afternoon Despatch & Courier

trick yourself into feeling full If your conscious efforts to eat less are failing, it’s time to start tricking your brain into feeling full and eating less. Dev Goswami brings you a few effective hacks

1

Write it down No, we don’t mean maintaining a food journal, although the idea is similar. Instead of writing down what you ate, write down what you are about to eat, every time you feel hungry. This allows you to compare what you’re thinking of eating with what you’ve already eaten the day before or a few hours ago, helping you gauge how healthy or unhealthy your diet is. You’re essentially letting your brain think and giving it time to say no before you bite into that steaming hot vada pav — taking the mindless out of mindless munching.

4

Have a party! Okay, not an actual party. What we’re suggesting is that the next time you have a craving for pizza, you call your friends over and order as a group, instead ordering one medium-sized pizza, which you shouldn’t finish by yourself, but you know that you will if you order alone. Ordering as a group will mean that you will only get one or two slices — they will satisfy your cravings, without you overeating. However, remember that you can’t cheat! If you end up ordering one pizza per person, this trick won’t work.

Drink flavoured water Drinking water when you are hungry is one of the oldest tricks in the book. This tip is a spin-off and includes drinking flavoured water to combat your sweet cravings. Flavoured water is quite delicious and drinking a glass or two when you feel hungry will not only fill you up, but will also satisfy your tastebuds to an extent — taking care of your cravings. Of course, you must remember that flavoured water comes with its own set of calories and sugar content that you need to account for in your diet. But as far as the point of this article goes, this will do the trick.

3

Colour matters According to a study, if you eat white food on white plates, you’re 18% more likely to overeat! Use the effect of colours on your brain to your advantage by reducing (to eat more) or increasing (to eat less) the contrast between the colours of your food and your plate. For example if you want to eat less of a white pasta-based dish, eat it on a black plate. Similarly, if you want to eat more greens, serve them on a green plate.

6

5

7

2 Make it hard to eat Food such as unshelled pistachios, plastic wrapped candies and crab can help you eat less. How? Well, first of all, a bowl of a unshelled pistachios or crab looks like it contains more food than it actually does. Also, the effort that you have to make in order to shell the pistachios will slow down your eating process, giving your brain enough time to realise that you’re full and don’t need to eat more.

Think about eating junk food Remember how guilty you feel after you wolf down a giant burger? While it’s impossible to feel guilty on demand, you can still try this trick to avoid your junk food cravings — instead of immediately eating the food that you’re craving, first think about eating it for a few minutes. It won’t always work, but we can tell you from personal experience that the craving will disappear on occasion.

Avoid eating in your car If you’re the type of person who prefers eating breakfast in your car when you’re rushing to work (even if it’s a healthy breakfast) or munching on peanuts while you’re stuck in a traffic jam, you need to stop. Why? Well, eating in the car forms a psychological habit, and so, every time you set in a car, you’ll feel hungry — no matter the time of the day. And, if you travel by your car a lot, this can lead to a lot of unnecessary snacking.

8

Portion control We’re sure that you know about the relationship between portion control and overeating. But, portioning your food well isn’t as easy as it appears to be — especially when you have a large box of nuts in front of you. Buy small packets of the snacks that you eat. For example, buy 50g packets of nuts instead of 500g and eat one packet a day. If this is too expensive for you, buy a large pack, but divide it into several small packages or containers.

10

Make it inconvenient The harder it is for you to find food, the easier it will be for you to avoid eating it. For example, if you’re prone to mindlessly snacking on wafers, place them in a relatively inaccessible part of your kitchen — deep inside a cupboard, behind bottles and jars, so that it’s inconvenient to quickly reach out for them when you feel peckish.

9

No serving bowls When you’re eating dinner, avoid placing serving bowls at the table. A serving bowl placed right in front of you will tempt you to reach out for seconds. A even better way to use this tip is to portion your dinner according to how much you should be eating and then packing up the leftovers. This will ensure that you eat only the amount that you’ve put on your plate and will stop you from overeating.

As you Age...

>> Following a sedentary lifestyle can negatively impact your health

It’s important not to lose sight of your fitness goals. Getting enough exercise, even after you have crossed your prime, is crucial for your health. Shirley Mistry suggests you take this quiz to find out if you need to be more active

W

e understand why you’d like to take things slow after you’ve crossed a certain age. After all, you deserve to be able to relax and laze around after all the hard work that you’ve put in for the most part of your life. But, while you stop to smell every rose that your new-found life has to offer, we suggest that you reconsider your fitness goals. It’s definitely not a good idea to spend two hours at the gym, seven days a week, lifting weights that feel as though they weigh as much as you do. But, you still need to get a dose of exercise regularly. Leading a sedentary lifestyle, especially in the later years of your life can almost double your risk of obesity, heart disease falls, mental inactivity and even early death, as compared to elderly individuals who lead an active life. So, take this quiz to find out if you are active enough. 1. You go for a brisk walk every day or every alternate day. a. I only go for a walk when I have nothing better to do. b. Yes, I do so almost every day. 2. Your children and grandchildren take such good care of you, that you don’t have to lift a finger to do anything. a. They spoil me silly! b. I like to do my chores myself.

3. You contribute with simple household chores such as picking up your children from the bus stop, or going to the grocery store. a. I only help out when my children need me to. b. I love to be part of my childrens’ lives. 4. You live alone and so, all you have to do is eat your meals, because your house help takes care of everything else. a. Yes, that and taking my medication on time. b. No, I do have several other hobbies and a group of friends that I meet and do fun stuff with regularly. 5. You pursue hobbies such as swimming, golfing and gardening. a. I prefer to knit or read a book instead. b. Yes, I like to stay active. 6. You are aware that leading a sedentary lifestyle can cause several health complications in the long run. a. Ah, it’s all one, big marketing gimmick. b. I am aware that I need to stay active to stay healthy. 7. Do you believe that staying active will help you stay mentally fit and help you steer clear of loneliness and depression?

a. No, I don’t. b. Yes, I do. 8. Do you think that cycling, or taking a swim are activities that require extreme levels of fitness. a. They sound strenuous. b. I should be able to do these activities for short periods of time.

Mostly As Unfortunately, you aren’t getting enough exercise. Not only are you very inactive, you don’t even comprehend the negative effect that lack of exercise can have on your health. Apart from obesity and heart disease, it can also cause depression, mental degeneration, strokes, cancer and even dementia. While we don’t mean to worry you, being physically active everyday — in a capacity that you are comfortable with — will certainly help you stay healthy inside out. Take a look at our box on moderate-intensity activities that you can perform to stay active and healthy. Mostly Bs You understand the importance of staying physically active and consciously pursue hobbies and activities that keep you agile. You don’t refrain from doing light chores and tasks around the house in a bid to keep yourself active and moving. Keep up the good work! But, if you are looking to switch up your routine or get even healthier, take a look at our box for a list of activities that you can indulge in.

GET FITTER If you need to incorporate physical activity into your routine, here are six simple ways to do it. But, remember to start slow and draw up an exercise schedule if you need help with sticking to your fitness goals.

Aerobics

Mild aerobic exercises, or water aerobics, don’t make for a very intensive workout, but they help you stay active. Aim to do around 100 minutes of aerobics every week and if you are doing them at home, stick to the beginners exercises and move on to a higher level only under a trainer’s supervision and after you have consulted with your doctor.

Chores

Household chores such as walking to the grocery store to fetch odds and ends or heading to the bus stop to pick up your grand children all count as physical activity, so don’t think twice before taking up these tasks. Also, pottering around the house will not only keep

you occupied, they will ensure that your joints don’t get rusty.

Hobby wise

While there is no harm in pursuing reading or knitting as a hobby, they are sedentary hobbies and don’t involve any movement. So, sneak some exercise while enjoying yourself by trying out activities such as cycling, swimming and golfing. Not only will it act as a welcome change to your routine, it will also give you a healthy dose of exercise.

Pro community

If you don’t enjoy doing things by yourself, join a class or round up a group of friends who have the same interests as you. This will make staying active enjoyable, and an added benefit is that you’ll get to meet new people, socialise and stay mentally active as well.

Dance away

If you think that fitness practices such as

aerobics and swimming aren’t for you, take up dance instead! It helps burn calories and also improves your flexibility, balance and focus.

Turn to yoga

On days when you aren’t feeling up to going through with your regular exercise routine or simply want to switch things up, practise yoga for a while. Apart from giving your body much-needed exercise, it will improve your coordination, flexibility and help you think clearly and focus better.

>> Running is a great way to stay fit, but read our points before you attempt this aerobic exercise

Perfecting an aBdominal crunch

Dev Goswami brings you a guide that explains how to perform an ab crunch correctly. Take a look

C

ompared to most other exercises, ab crunches are relatively easy to perform. But, there a few things that you need to remember before attempting them. First of all, remember that if your goal is washboard abs or a flat tummy, solely performing this exercise isn’t enough. You need to supplement it with the correct diet. Also, if you do not have the correct form, or put pressure on the wrong part of your body, you can actually end up with an injured back or neck. So, keep the following points in mind the next time you’re performing a crunch. n Lie flat on your back, with your feet together and your knees bent. n You can place your hands on your chest or behind your head for support. But, if you are a beginner, avoid placing your hands behind your head, because doing this increases the possibility of you pushing your head forward, which can injure your neck.

RUN RIGHT We all are aware of the benefits of running, but take into consideration your fitness levels before you incorporate it into your daily routine. Yamini Walia shares a few tips that will help you run without injuring yourself

n Pull in your stomach and push your lower back against the floor as you pull your chest up. Remember that your abdominal muscles should feel stressed. If you feel your neck or back getting tense, you’re doing this exercise wrong. n Exhale when you’re pulling your upper body towards your knees. Remember to keep your neck straight throughout the course of this movement and ensure that you don’t bend your head forward or backward. n A common mistake that people make is going back to the starting position the moment that their head is near their knees. For this exercise to be effective, you need to hold your pose for a few seconds when your chest is in the air. Feel the stress on your abdomen before going back down. n Make sure that you’re inhaling while you slowly go back down — the emphasis here should be on moving slowly. Remember not to push your body back with a jerk; it should a gradual motion. n Another common mistake that people make is relaxing completely in between repetitions. While performing repetitions, don’t let your shoulders touch the floor until you’ve finished the set. Go back down only until your shoulders are a centimetre above the floor and then pull your chest up again. n 15-20 reps make for an ideal set, but if at any point you feel your back or neck hurting, stop immediately. n For a variation, you can also bring your knees towards your head while pulling your chest up. Another way to increase the intensity is to perform this exercise on a Swiss ball. You can also twist your body towards one side (and to the other side during the next repetitions) once you’re at the top of the pulling up motion.

R

unning is one of the best forms of exercise and it can burn more calories as compared to other conventional exercises. From trainers to celebrities such as Gordon Ramsay and Nigella Lawson who are famous for choosing to run to stay in shape, running has always a been a popular way you stay fit. It not only helps you maintain your weight, but also ensures a happy state of mind and reduces your risk of cardiovascular problems. But, before you start running, read the following points to ensure that you stay safe.

Meet your GP If you’ve led a sedentary lifestyle for most part of your life, or haven’t been able to exercise for a while because of an injury, then consult a general physician before you >> Running in a group will ensure motivation and make it a fun activity

start running. A doctor will be able to tell you whether your body is ready to take on this strenuous activity.

run slowly Begin your run with a 5-minute warm-up that includes brisk-walking, knee-lifts, climbing stairs or side-stepping. Also, if you’re a beginner, we recommend that you practise brisk walking for 30 minutes and intersperse it with 2-minute sprints. The idea is to run slowly and increase your stamina, pace and distance gradually, over a period of time.

run in GrouPs Though running while listening to music can be a fun activity, running along with a group of friends can be more beneficial for

you, especially if you’re a beginner. If you are too embarrassed to run with a group of experienced runners (read: those with more stamina than you), try and run with someone who shares a similar fitness level as you. This will keep you motivated, without the worry of holding another person back.

CorreCt Posture While performing any form of exercise, your posture plays a crucial role. Running with an improper posture will yield in no results. Run with your arms and shoulders relaxed and elbows bent. Maintain an upright posture and ensure a smooth running stride, striking the ground with the middle of your foot.

Make it interestinG Running on the same route every day can become mundane. Make your run interesting by varying the distance and your route. Once you’ve been running for a few weeks, make a note of the most interesting routes and plan your future running course accordingly, to ensure that you stay motivated.

relax After your first run, your heart rate is going to be higher than usual. Don’t panic, and give yourself some time to cool down after every run. Performing a few stretches to help relax your leg muscles, hamstrings, thighs, calfs, lower backs and buttocks is recommended. For the most effective results, hold each stretch for at least 15 seconds before moving on to the next one.

SELF HARM

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JANUARY 6, 2015 >> Emotional instability can cause a person to harm themselves

Who’s more likely? The following groups of people have a higher chance of engaging in self harm: n Adolescent women. n Those with a history of substance abuse or eating disorders. n People who find it hard to express their emotions. n People who grew up in an environment where it was frowned upon to talk about their feelings. n People who have previously suffered from emotional, physical or sexual abuse. n Those who have had tumultuous relationships in the past.

Self harm or self injury is when a person intentionally harms themselves as a way to vent or deal with situations, without the aim of suicide. Shirley Mistry tells you more

S

elf harm or self injury, often characterised by practices such as cutting, is the urge to harm and hurt yourself. It involves causing surface injuries to yourself, without the intent of inflicting fatal harm, as a way of dealing with unpleasant situations. It is a severe and unhealthy way to deal with one’s emotions, handle tricky situations or process uncomfortable information.

What does it include? People who self harm indulge in cutting themselves, burning themselves, banging their heads against objects, picking at their skin or existing wounds, hitting themselves and in extreme cases, even going to the extent of breaking one’s bones. Most people who indulge in self harm do so when they are alone and go to great lengths to hide their habit.

What causes it? People who habitually harm themselves use it as a mechanism to deal with upsetting and distressing situations. Some others also use it as a form of rebellion and this is often seen amongst teenagers and young adults who feel the need to go against systemic, established rules. Other reasons for indulging in self harm include anxiety, peer pressure, sexual or physical abuse, emotional instability and a constant need for attention.

self loathing & self harm Several people inflict pain upon themselves because they harbour a poor opinion of themselves and/ or of their body. This is why, those suffering from self harm often suffer from eating disorders as well. Also, people who are extremely regimental are sometimes found using self harm as a way to punish themselves for not living up to the high standards that they have set for themselves.

Watch out for the signs If you suspect that someone you know is indulging in self harm, watch out for the following signs: n Wearing long sleeved clothing, even when it is hot.

expert speak

We spoke to psychologist Dr. Kinjal Pandya about what you can do to help someone who you suspect suffers from this tendency. She told us that if you do know of someone who habitually harms themselves, it is of great importance to be 100% involved in getting them on to the path of recovery. “Try and get the patient involved in physical activities, especially those that involve eye-hand-leg coordination, because this helps them stay distracted. You can also note down the events and situations that act as a trigger for the patient, so that you, as well as the patient, are prepared to tackle the situation as and when it arises,” she further adds. Dr. Kinjal also suggests that you must try and help the patient love themselves. She says, “When someone is in love with who they are, it will boost their self-esteem and they won’t want to hurt themselves anymore.” In case you feel that someone you know is about to indulge in self harm, Dr. Kinjal has a tip: “ Take them to a place that is filled with people because the urge to self harm is much lower when several people are surrounding you.”

n Low self esteem. n Difficulty in expressing their feelings. n Carrying sharp objects such as a razor, knife or blade for no apparent reason. n Poor performance at school or work.

treatment Therapy is the primary form of treatment for those who self harm. Group, as well as individual counselling sessions help a patient realise that they aren’t the only ones suffering from situations and emotions that are difficult to process or deal with, and it also helps patients to develop a more positive outlook during times of distress. In cases where self harm is a reaction to, or a result of sexual or physical abuse, posttraumatic stress therapy is used. This is usually supplemented by mild anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medication to help patients adapt to healthier ways of dealing with stressful and upsetting situations.

you can help If you know someone who suffers from the tendency of indulging in self harm, it is extremely important to assure them that they can share their worries and anxieties with you. Knowing that they aren’t alone will prevent them from resorting to self harm every time that they are faced with a distressing situation. Keeping communication channels open is one of the best ways to lend your support to someone who engages in self harm.

« Know MoRE SELF-EStEEM & HEALtH

We all understand the concept of self-esteem and while being insecure about your abilities is generally believed to be a bad thing, do you know why this happens? If not, this article will help you find out, says Dev Goswami

S

elf-esteem, which refers to a person’s sense of self, is one of the most interesting aspects of human psychology. But, we’re not getting into any of the drab psychological details. Instead, we will tell you how negative self-esteem can affect your health.

the health connection

Self-esteem is a tough nut to crack because it is difficult to find a direct link between your self-esteem and health. Most studies focus on the impact of self-esteem on health-related habits. Here are some of its behavioural impacts. n It increases your risk of falling prey to addiction, not just that of tobacco, alcohol or drugs, but also of things such as work. n It has a direct link with depression. Ironically, one of the many symptoms of depression is low self-esteem. n Low self-esteem can put you at risk of suffering from eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia.

>> How you see yourself can have an indirect effect on your health

n Low self-esteem can also make you withdraw from social situations, leaving you isolated and making it difficult for you to start new things — such as a job or a new hobby. This, in turn, increases your stress levels, which has it’s own consequences.

What should you do?

The personal nature of self-esteem means that it is not a problem that can be fixed with a generic set of tips. The root cause of low self-esteem (which can range from childhood abuse, to bad relationships or a lack of success in your professional life) needs to be addressed. One of the best ways to turn such a scenario around, is to identify negative emotions and challenge those beliefs. We also need to emphasise on the fact that if you see anyone with low selfesteem, don’t hesitate to help them — if you don’t know how to, ask for an expert’s opinion. Also, remember that in most cases, they might not even be aware of the problem.

ask our beauty expert

BarBara, our Beauty expert, will help Fix your proBlems

dear Barbara, Over the past few days, I’ve noticed that my toe nails have gotten slightly discoloured. They’ve also become thicker than usual. I am clueless about why this is happening, because I can move and operate my feet without any discomfort. Is it something serious? Should I be worried? — nidhi sharma, andheri dear nidhi, What you’ve described sounds like athlete’s foot, which is a fungal infection that affects your nails. To deal with the problem, you can opt for an overthe-counter anti-fungal cream. Also, remember to dust your shoes and socks with an anti-fungal powder until the infection subsides. Athlete’s foot usually spreads through shared footwear or shared showers, such as through shower cubicles at the gym. So, avoid sharing your footwear with anyone and when you’re taking a shower in a common area or in bathrooms that are used by others, make sure that you wear shower slippers to avoid contracting an infection again. dear Barbara, I am quite embarrassed about this, but it’s become a serious problem now — I have very bad breath. I have impeccable oral hygiene; I brush twice a day, use floss to dislodge food particles and use a tongue scrapper to get rid of bacteria. However, the bad breath still persists. I am really worried that it’s never going to go away! Is there anything that I can do? My only option seems to be to constantly chew on gum or spray some mouth freshener before talking to people. — aashish sisodiya, matunga dear aashish, It’s a common misconception that maintaining good oral hygiene is all you need to combat bad breath. Sure, in most cases, bad breath is a result of poor oral health. However, sometimes (as it seems to be in your case) it could also be due to sulphur — something that no amount of brushing or flossing can get rid of. But, there’s no need to panic. Sulphur compounds are emitted by the bacteria on your tongue and in your throat (your scrapper can only reach the first couple inches of your tongue), when they lose access to oxygen. Frequently drinking water will provide the bacteria enough oxygen to ensure that the bacteria doesn’t produce sulphur. You can also try using nonalcoholic, chlorine dioxide-based mouthwashes to deal with bad breath. If this doesn’t work, consult a dentist.

MAP IT OUT Face mapping has been a revered Chinese practice for several centuries and it’s slowly gaining popularity across the world. Shirley Mistry gives you a brief introduction

W

hile your eyes are believed to be a window to your soul, your face can reveal a lot about your health. Face mapping is an ancient Chinese practice, where your face is divided into several zones and each zone corresponds to a particular body part. So, spots, redness and pimples in any of these zones can indicate medical problems affecting the organ or region which corresponds to that facial zone. While it doesn’t offer a detailed diagnosis, it is certainly a reliable technique and once you know the basics, you’ll think twice before writing off a stray pimple as just another pesky zit.

Between your eyes

drink lots of water and reduce your fat intake if your forehead is perpetually covered with pimples.

eyes & ears Your eyes and ears are both linked to your kidney. When it comes to this zone, watch out for dark circles around your eyes and spots around your ears. Both these problems are an indicator of dehydration. So, ensure that you drink lots of fluids and cut down on your salt intake in order to stay hydrated. If you find that the problem persists, visit your doctor to rule out kidney infections.

nose

If you thought that the tiny space between your eyes couldn’t possibly reveal anything significant about your health, think again. This zone corresponds to your liver and if you suffer from breakouts or pimples in this region, it is likely that you suffer from a food intolerance or allergy. Commonly occurring because of an intolerance to dairy or alcohol, watch out for acne in this region if you suspect that your body doesn’t agree with certain foods and beverages.

Moving on to the most important organ in your body, your heart is linked to your nose. While large pores in this area indicate that you suffer from high blood pressure, they can also be a sign of the fact that your diet includes too many unhealthy fats, which are bad for your heart. So, if you have a family history of heart disease, this is a sign that you need to get regular checkups and keep a strict watch on your diet.

Forehead

Cheeks

Your forehead isn’t linked to just one organ, because it represents your digestive system as a whole. So, suffering from acne in this region indicates a digestive imbalance and it can also occur when your diet includes excessive quantities of fat. So,

Your cheeks are linked to your respiratory system and you must watch out for pimples in this area. Smokers might develop acne on their upper cheeks, which is a sign of dehydration. While quitting smoking is the best solution, ensure that

you drink lots of fluids if you’re finding it difficult to quit. Also, if you are not a smoker and still suffer from acne in this region, it is a sign that you aren’t getting enough fresh air and so, try to spend more time outdoors. Also, if you lead a very sedentary lifestyle, your organs don’t get the required amount of oxygen, which can lead to acne on your cheeks. So, include some light exercise into your daily routine as well.

Jawline This one is the least worrisome zones when compared to all the other zones that we’ve mentioned in this article. Flare-ups or breakouts along your jawline are an indicator of fluctuating hormone levels. For women, this explains the pimples that you get on a monthly basis. But, if your jawline is perpetually dotted with pimples, it could be a sign of severe hormone imbalance, so consult a doctor immediately. Meanwhile, eat foods that cool your body down to help the pimples fade quickly.

Chin Don’t confuse pimples on your chin with breakouts on your jawline, because this region is an indicator of your nutritional levels. Such pimples indicate that your diet is rich in dairy, low in fibre and high in fat. This shows that you aren’t getting the right mix of nutrients which your body requires to stay healthy. So, if you suffer from regular breakouts in this zone, it’s time to rework your diet and make healthier food choices.

EW DELHI: Amid questions over the 'boat' operation, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday said "circumstantial evidence" indicated that the occupants of the vessel were "suspected or possible terrorists" and that they were in touch with Pakistani maritime officials and army. He dismissed the contention that the four people on board the boat, which 'exploded' and sank in the Arabian Sea in the intervening night of December 31 and January 1, during an Indian Coast Guard operation, were smugglers. The Minister underlined that the suicidal act of setting the boat on fire by the men on board the boat showed that they were 'committed' and indicated suspected terror link. He told PTI that he would classify the occupants of the boat as "suspected or possible terrorists" since they had committed suicide after being intercepted. They were in touch with Pakistani maritime officials, "army and international contacts", he added. Replying to questions by reporters about veracity of this assessment, Parrikar said, "...Circumstantial evidence indicates what I am saying." His remarks came as questions were being raised on the veracity of claims that a 2008 Mumbai attack-style operation had been foiled. There are also reports claiming that the boat was involved in smuggling. The boat was neither in a fishing area nor on any busy route preferred by smugglers to sneak in, Parrikar said, adding that their actions indicate that they were there for "some other kind of activity". At the same time, he said, "We are not sure what is that other kind". He said intercepted satellite communication showed they were interacting about passing of cargo and talking about families of some of the boat members. "Smugglers don't keep in touch with Pakistani maritime agency, or their army or international contacts," he said. "A normal boat, even carrying some drugs, can throw

Coal Block Auction Will Be Windfall Gains For State Govts

The coal block auction will result in a windfall gain for the state governments. In the current fiscal, about`3,000 crores will flow into the state coffers. Over the years, the expected revenue from coal block auctions is expected to even wipe-out the states’ fiscal deficit significantly. As per our estimates, says a report from the Economic Research Department of State Bank of India, the “ total payment to the states in next 30 years would be more than `4 lakh crore for 204 blocks that have been cancelled by the Supreme Court. In addition to this, an equal amount will also flow to the states treasury by way of royalty. So all the states stand to benefit to the tune around about `4 lakh crore over 30 years. These are initial estimates and the amount may go well beyond this with an increase in coal extraction and auction price”.

new orders, while output growth from six core infrastructure industries rose 6.7 % y-o-y in November - all suggesting a likely rebound in November industrial production, the Japanese brokerage firm said. "We expect the economy to gradually recover in 2015 with real GDP growth of 5.5 %% y-o-y in FY15 (year-end March 2015) and 6.6 % in FY16," Sonal Varma, India economist at Nomura, said in a research note.

Government Moots Smoother Foreign Investment Norms For REITs By A Business Reporter

T

23

o remove any regulatory hurdle coming in way of foreign investors putting money in the newly created Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) structure, the government has proposed allowing overseas investments in this space within the FEMA regulations. The proposed move, to be discussed by the Union Cabinet soon, aims to allow such foreign investments as an exception to the overall prohibition on foreign investors to engage in the real estate business within FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act) regulations, sources said. The FINANCE Ministry will soon approach the Cabinet with a proposal in this regard, they added. While capital markets regulator Sebi notified its REIT Regulations in September, there have been some procedural issues with regard to certain regulations including FEMA and the FDI Policy

coming in way of such structures taking off. The proposed relaxation is expected to help those entities, which are registered and regulated under the Sebi norms, to access foreign INVESTMENTS through their REITs. REITs can be listed and traded on stock exchange like shares or any other security and also help create new platforms for raising of funds by real estate companies. Despite significant tax benefits for the sponsors of these business trusts, these new regulations would also be "revenue accretive" for the government in form of taxes. The move comes at a time when the government is taking several steps to boost foreign INVESTMENTS in the country. Recently it has relaxed foreign direct investment (FDI) policy in pharmaceuticals sector and insurance sector. During April-October this fiscal, the country has attracted USD 17.34 billion FDI, an increase of 26 % as compared to the same period last year.

On prices, the report said input costs have moderated due to lower commodity prices, which along with still-subdued demand, has kept output prices stable. Nomura, however, noted that the period of a positive base effect on CPI inflation is over and CPI inflation is expected to rise from 4.4 % y-o-y in November to 5.5-6.0 % in the next three months, before moderating back towards 5 %after March. "Overall, we expect CPI inflation to undershoot the RBI's January 2016 target of 6 %. We pencil in a 25 bp repo rate cut in both April and June (to 7.5 %), followed by a pause," Varma added.

Misleading Advertisements Continue Unabatedly ASCI upholds complaints against HUL, Godrej, Philips, Snapdeal, Nissan Motor India, Cinthol Deodorants and Coca Cola By A Business Reporter

T

he Advertising industry watchdog ASCI has upheld 113 complaints about misleading campaigns by companies such as HUL, Godrej, Philips, Snapdeal, Bajaj Allianz, Nissan Motor India and Coca Cola. According to the Customer Complaints Council (CCC) of ASCI it received 144 complaints during November and a maximum of 61 complaints of misleading ads were upheld from the personal and healthcare category, reports PTI. The council concluded that FMCG major Hindustan Unilever Ltd's advertisement of Lifebuoy violated its code. HUL's claims that the soap provides "10 x more germ protection" and "10 x more skin care" than any other brand was "not substantiated", it said. It also upheld a case against Godrej's Goodknight, which shows "a child standing near the mosquito vapouriser", whereas the product’s leaflet includes a precaution that the electrical liquid vaporising machine should be kept away from the reach of children."The advertisement features a dangerous practice, manifests a disregard for safety and encourages negligence," said ASCI. Online retailer Snapdeal.Com, which had advertised on October 6 promising heavy discounts was also pulled up by ASCI stating "while purchasing the products these products were not available and were sold out or the rates were higher while clicking the buy button". It

added: "The claim of 'Snapdeal bachaey raho discount offer' was false and was not substantiated." The advertising regulator also pulled up Japanese auto major Nissan for "misleading by ambiguity" as an advertisement of Datsun Go that claimed of "Rs 4000 insurance support", was not substantiated. The ASCI also upheld a complaint against radio advertisement of Coca Cola as the mandatory audio, "Coca Cola states that it contains no fruit juice, etc" was "played too fast and was not comprehensible" and contravened ASCI Guidelines. It also pulled up Philips Electronics for an advertisement of Philips Kerashine Styling Kit, which shows a girl on the rear seat of a car standing up while the vehicle is moving on the road. "This advertisement encourages a dangerous practice and manifests a disregard for safety and is in violation of the traffic rules," it said. ASCI also upheld complaints against advertisements of several educational institutes, including SVKM’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, SRIMT and Institute of Technology & Management (ITM) over misleading claims of job placements. "Complaints against advertisements of these educational institutes were upheld because of unsubstantiated claims that they 'provide 100 per cent placement/and/or they claim to be the No.1' in their respective fields," ASCI said. A complaint against Cinthol Deodorants which shows alcoholbased deodorants being sprayed on ball pen art (art done by a ball point pen) resulting in the art getting dissolved, was also upheld. ASCI said: "The advertiser seeks to instill fear in the mind of the consumers as if alcohol based deodorants can melt the human skin. Thus, the advertisement denigrates alcohol based deodorants."

Saji Menon is the talented disciple of renowned Mohiniattam exponent Dr Kanak Rele. Saji was the first performer of the evening, her rendition of Kubja was noteworthy for the portrayal of the woman Kubja who is the slave for the demon king Kamsa, her unexpected encounter with Lord Krishna redeems her of the suffering and bondage as she is blessed by the Lord. Saji was successful in the portrayal of the plight and helplessness of the woman. Gracy Singh performed Bho Shambo revealing the magnificence and the power of Lord Shiva in the Bharata Natyam style, noteworthy for the divine and sincere quality of the composition. resented by Nitin Keni of Essel Vision and produced under the banner of Neena Raut Films, 'Lokmanya, Ek Yugpurush' is a latest bio-pic on the extremist freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak. The movie comments on the socio-political situation in India today, with a voiceover narration in the beginning of the movie, by Nana Patekar in his typical style. The film encompasses the journey of a young Tilak from his early days to becoming the legend, thus inspiring generations to come. Nailing hard the message that when it comes to systems and social situation today, everyday comes as a new difficulty, problem; however, when looked at the same through Lokmanya’s eyes, it’s nothing but a challenge and hence a new opportunity, an opportunity that opens into development and progress of our nation, India. This should inspire the young generation to head towards their dreams and embrace the way of the Lokmanya. The film discovers the ideals and vision of the great freedom fighter, comments on the sociopolitical situation of today’s India and how it can be improved using his messages that were delivered over a century ago, unravelling the legend. The movie starts with a court scene, where Tilak is

precision and technical quality, pertaining mainly to the Tarana. Aditi is the disciple of renowned exponents Sunayana Hazarilal and Shila Mehta. Manipuri by Anusua Roy was pleasing for its playful quality in Nanichuri wherein little Krishna steals butter during the absence of mother Yasoda. Anusua is the talented disciple of accomplished exponents Latasana Devi and the Jhaveri sisters. Rachita Atibudhi is the disciple of Guru Rabindra Atibudhi, her Odissi rendition was pleasing partially, as needs to concentrate on the finer and graceful aspect of Odissi. Rachita performed Dashavtara quite effectively pertaining to the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Manju Warrier is blessed with a striking personality, she commenced her performance with Bhramanjali, after the invocatory number, Manju performed Alokey Sri Balakrishna which ended with precise and striking footwork on the rim of the brass plate, that received thunderous acclaim from the audience. Bhavayami Gopalabala, another Annamacharya compositon. revealed the vatsalya bhavam and the relation of mother Yasoda with little Krishna and her astonishment in seeing the entire world in the little mouth of Krishna. Manju concluded the performance with the popular Swati Tirunal Thillana in Dhanasri ragam. Manju is indeed a brilliant danseuse, besides the structural quality, her performance created an ever lasting due to her powerful expressions and the amazing musical orchestra, led by the commendable vocalist. On the whole a grand programme.

RELIVING THE AGRA GHARANA GAYKI

By Amarendra Dhaneshwar he Agra gharana is known for its massive manner of articulation. This attribute became the hallmark of the gharana thanks to singers like the late Ustads like Faiyaz Khan, Latafat Hussain Khan and Sharafat Hussain Khan. Chidanand Nagarkar who was not directly connected with this main branch of the Agra gharana drew his inspiration from Faiyaz Khan. Nagarkar was a pupil of the musicologist Dr Ratanjankar who was a faithful follower of Faiyaz Khan. Nagarkar headed the music and dance faculty of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and taught many students. He created two new ragas and also composed a number of bandishes. A foundation has been started in his memory .The first programme was held on Sunday and Bengaluru-based Susheela

Mehta was invited to sing. Susheela is a highly talented and well-trained singer. She has learned from the late Ramrao Naik who was a venerable figure in Bengaluru. She also trained under the late Khadim Hussain Khan and Lalith Rao of the Agra gharana. It

being tried and then goes into flashback, to unfold the life and times of Lokmanya Tilak. It shows Tilak (Subodh Bhave) returning from Bombay after studying law degree, only to start a school for the local children, with the help of his friend, Agarkar (Sameer Vidhwans). Both manage to open New English School. The movie has shown two eras, one being the film's subject era and the other being today's time. However, both relate to each other. Makarand (Chinmay Mandlekar) is a young journalist, who gets fascinated by Tilak's thinking, after reading books on him, but in the process, ignoring his would be wife- Samira (Priya Bapat Kamat). The film has shown the ruthless ways of the British officer Rand dealing with plague, which hit Poona, during his time. Then, the officer being killed by Damodar Hari Chaphekar with the knowledge of Tilak, is also shown. The film also elaborates on Tilak's hard-hitting writings against the rulers and justifying

is a misconception that the Agra gayaki is suitable only for male singers. Singers like Susheela have broken this misconception through their spell-binding performances in which melody and rhythm hold sway and the audience is simply enraptured by the sound and depth of music. Her latest performance was no exception. She began with a serene nomtom alap in the raga 'Todi'. It had a typical Agra flavour. She went on to sing 'Garwa Maisan Lagi' which has been immortalised by Faiyaz Khan. She also sang a two-tiered Shudh Sarang in a most compelling way. There was tenderness appropriate to the mood of the composition. Susheela also sang two Kannada devotionals. Hemant Hemmady on the harmonium and Bhushan Parchure on the tabla lent superb support.

British killings through his newspaper 'Kesari'; which lands him in jail and is sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of six years outside the country in Mandalay, Burma (1908-1914). The story by Om Raut and Kaustubh Savarkar is well researched. But the highlight of the movie is its screenplay and dialogues. Art direction (Santosh Phutane) and costume department (Mahesh Sherla) have complimented the camera work of Prasad Bhende. Interesting lighting and camera angles add beauty to the frames. The music (Ajit-Sameer) is an asset, as the songs escalate the drama in story telling. The background music too is noteworthy. Editor (Aashish Mhatre, Apurva Motivale) and the director have worked beautifully hand in glove and it shows in scene cutting. Director Om Raut makes his presence felt from the very first scene. Subodh Bhave is excellent as Tilak. He has used his voice to greater effect with modulations depicting different emotions. Sameer Vidhwans as Agarkar is very convincing. He is well supported by Priya Bapat Kamath. Deepesh Shah’s cameo as Gandhi is impressive. Angad Mhaiskar, Vikram Gaikwad as newspaper editor, Shweta Bhende as Satyabhama Tilak, support well. A film worth watching for its historical importance and good execution by the debutant director and definitely for Subodh Bhave.

three losses had been converted to victories instead, Dhoni's goodbye to Test cricket could have been a lot different. Kohli's first order of business will be to get his bowling sorted and pick an attack that can take 20 wickets. There are two sides to it however. On the plus side, this Sydney Test is a stand-alone five-day game for some time. India's next assignment is a tour to Bangladesh after the IPL season. As such, the new captain needs to figure out his bowling combination for this Test and can mull over any long-term possibilities a little later. The negative side is that there is a tri-series and an ODI World Cup to be played over the 10 weeks after this Sydney Test, which in all effect is a dead-rubber. Kohli needs to consider which of his bowlers need to be rested, and who should make the cut.

S

YDNEY: The series is out of bounds but Indian cricket is all set to enter a new era under the feisty Virat Kohli, whose leadership would be put through a trial by fire when the visitors seek redemption in the fourth and final cricket Test against Australia. Down 0-2 in the series, India have already lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after the third Test in Melbourne ended in a draw. Besides, India were dealt quite a shock when skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni chose to quit Test cricket altogether. This led to Kohli's elevation as captain and it would be interesting to see how the outspoken and flamboyant batsman, who has scored three hundreds in the series so far, handles the pressure of leading the side and salvage some pride in the series. As such this is India's sixth consecutive Test series loss playing overseas, a run that stretches back to the England tour in 2011. It is only the second time in their long history that India have suffered such embarrassment, the first stretching from their debut Test in England in 1932 to their maiden tour of West Indies in 1955. However, when the first ball is bowled in Sydney, future and not history will be on the visitors' mind. It has been almost a month since Kohli did the job so ably at the Adelaide Oval, nearly carrying the team to victory on the back of his two hundreds in that match. Given the thankless nature

TEAMS:

India's captain Virat Kohli and teammate Shikhar Dhawan talk during training for their test match against Australia in Sydney on Monday. Their final test of the series begins today with Australia leading the series 2-0. of this job, he will perhaps soon realise that his bat might not always be the answer to all his problems. For there is a big task facing Kohli as he steps on to the plate now as India's new Test skipper, now in a permanent

role. Dhoni's run as captain in overseas Test cricket has been marred by his team's inability to take 20 wickets. It is the singular reason for this recent poor record and has evolved in this calendar year as India's

inability to grab their chances and latch on to moments that could win them a Test match. Since December 2013, they have let opportunities go in Johannesburg, Auckland, Wellington, Adelaide and Brisbane. If those two draws and

Smith looking forward to going up against ‘emotional’ Kohli By Chetan Narula

S

YDNEY: Relishing the challenge of squaring off against new Indian captain Virat Kohli in the fourth and final cricket Test here, Australian skipper Steve Smith described his rival number as an "emotional character". "M S Dhoni has been a terrific leader for India for a long period of time. There's no doubt about that," Smith told reporters in the pre-match press conference here. "We saw Virat Kohli take over the reins in that first Test and he did a pretty good job for them. He's quite an emotional character and likes to get involved in a lot of decisions. I'm looking forward to this week again with India with another captain and

the series and reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after the drawn third Test in Melbourne. They have made one change to their playing eleven, with Mitchell Starc coming in for Mitchell Johnson, who sits out as a precaution owing to a hamstring strain. Asked if Johnson would have played had the series still been undecided, Smith said, "Probably." "He has got a little hamstring strain. There's no secret that there's a pretty big Shane Watson rests before batting in the nets during training for their summer coming up and we cricket test match against India in Sydney, Monday. want him to be fresh for the ODIs and the World Cup hopefully we can close out cricket ground in the world. I coming up. We don't want to the series well," he said. am really looking forward to risk him and hopefully he'll "It's going to be a pretty big leading the boys out at the be right for those." moment for me as well. It is a SCG," he added. Johnson had been critical home Test and my favourite Australia have already won this past week of the pitches

rolled out for the Test series, alleging that they didn't support the bowlers too much as wickets usually do Down Under. Smith though didn't see it as an issue. "It looks pretty good at this stage. There's a lot less grass than there was on the wicket last year which seamed around a bit and played a few tricks. It looks a good wicket at this stage so hopefully it will be another good Test match," said the young captain. "I think the wickets have been pretty good to be fair. They haven't' played too many tricks. It would have been nice to have the MCG pitch break up a little bit more last week, but I don't think you can control tha,” Smith added.

29 I hope to be as calm as Dhoni: Kohli

SYDNEY: Still coming to terms with Mahendra Singh Dhoni's shock retirement, new Indian captain Virat Kohli said he is keen to emulate his predecessor by staying calm in tough situations when he leads the side out in the fourth and final cricket Test against Australia starting here today.

India's MS Dhoni bowls in the nets during training.

"We were changing and packing up in the dressing room after the Melbourne Test and Dhoni came in and said he wanted to say something. He then announced his decision and we were all taken aback. It was so sudden, totally out of the blue. We didn't see it coming and it was shocking at that point for us. "We didn't know what to say because it was a very emotional moment for him. For us too, who as youngsters had started under his captaincy, it was a very strange moment," said Kohli about Dhoni's Test retirement announcement. "There is so much to learn from him especially in tough situations, his composure and his decision making at important times. These things are priceless and any captain would love to have them. I hope I can be as calm as him," he added, while paying rich tribute to his predecessor. Kohli, who was stand-incaptain in the first Test at the Adelaide Oval with Dhoni nursing a finger injury, struck two centuries to scare the hosts only to lose the match by 48 runs but the top-order batsman is ready to learn from his mistakes. "There were quite a few things from Adelaide that I sat down and analysed which can be improved upon. I have thought about what are the things that I can correct, the mistakes I made in that game. Hopefully I'll try to make the right decisions in every situation out there in the middle," said Kohli reflecting on his experience thus far.

EW DELHI: Badminton ace Saina Nehwal is 'upset' that her quest to know the reason behind the rejection of her nomination for Padma Bhushan snowballed into a big controversy, saying that she never demanded the prestigious award and would respect the decision of the Sports Ministry. "I didn't really like the way media put it that I have demanded the award. Who am I to demand the award. I am nobody. I am a sportsperson. I play for my country. We are from the same place as well, Haryana. There is nothing wrong between us. I will be

very happy if Sushil gets the award." The Sports Ministry today decided to recommend Saina for the Padma Bhushan award but insisted that it did not receive her nomination from the Badminton Association of India (BAI) within the stipu-

Selectors might mull over Gritty Williamson fights to keep New Zealand alive Yuvraj’s inclusion for World Cup W ELLINGTON: Kane Williamson and BJ Watling produced an unbroken sixth wicket stand of 94 to keep New Zealand alive on the third day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Wellington. M

UMBAI: The out-offavour Yuvraj Singh's brilliant domestic form will weigh on the selectors when they meet here today to pick the squads for the ODI tri-series against Australia and England besides the World Cup next month. Yuvraj, who was not picked even in the preliminary list of 30 probables on December 4 last, has since come back into contention by striking three back-to-back hundreds against Haryana, Maharashtra and Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy. The hard-hitting left-hander, significantly the man of the 2011 World Cup that was won by India and scorer of over 8000 runs from 293 ODIs, also got among the wickets with his left-arm spin on the placid track in the match at Rajkot. With there being a question mark over Ravindra Jadeja, undergoing rehabilitation for his throwing shoulder currently, Yuvraj would weigh significantly on the selectors' mind while choosing the Cup squad. There is another player of similar style who is almost certain to be picked, Gujarat's Axar Patel, already in Australia as a late replacement for Jadeja. It will all boil down to whether the selectors, as well as captain Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher, who will be on conference call from Australia, feel it makes sense in putting the clock back onYuvraj -- a proven customer in the shorter formats of the game. At 33, Yuvraj, who did

stubborn Williamson-Watling partnership recovered the innings from a perilous 159-5 However, despite their dogged fight, the odds remained in favour of Sri Lanka pulling off a series-levelling win after losing the first Test in Christchurch by eight wickets. For New Zealand skipper

Brendon McCullum, returning to the Basin Reserve for the first time since his matchsaving 302 against India a year ago, there were to be no heroics this time. He was out for 22 while Jimmy Neesham, who scored a century in the India Test, was out for 19. After McCullum's depar-

ture it fell to Williamson to shoulder responsibility for keeping New Zealand afloat. He was dropped on 29 and again on 60 in an otherwise cautious innings in which the partnership has seen off the second new ball and ensured the Test should extend deep into the fourth day at least.

Wawrinka keen to do well in Chennai before Oz Open defence C not figure in any India squad in 2014, is not too old to merit consideration, especially with doubts arising over Jadeja who is unlikely to be fit for the triangular series in Australia commencing later this month. The Cricket Board expects Jadeja to regain full control of his injured body part before the February 14-March 29 mega event to be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand. "According to our assessment Jadeja can start to train and throw with his left hand from January 7," said BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel ahead of the selection meeting. The Saurashtra cricketer is currently undergoing rehabilitation in Chennai. The ICC rules also do not debar the selectors from changing their mind and including a player not in the original list of probables, according to BCCI sources.

HENNAI: Defending champion and World No.4 Stanislas Wawrinka wants to have a few wins under his belt at the ATP Chennai Open in run up to the Australian open, the first Grand Slam of the season. "I am ready for the new year. Everything is going well for me for this new season so far and everyone will be starting a fresh. I will try to my best and see what I can do throughout the year," Wawrinka said. "It is beginning of the year and we will see. I have my own plans. I hope I can win some matches here and get some wins before going to Australia. I had won the title last year and it was very thrilling for me," the Swiss star added. Asked about his possible meeting in the second round against 18-year-old Borna Coric of Croatia, who made phenomenal progress last season, the Swiss said it would be tough opener. "He is a good player. He is young and has been playing well after some wins last year. If I

have to play him, it is a tough match. It is also first match of the year. But, we will see tonight how things will pan for me since I am playing doubles also," he said. Talking about his performance last year, Wawrinka said it was "amazing" for him. "I won a lot of big matches and won Davis Cup for my country. I could not expect more, that is for sure. Finishing world number 4 is amazing that I never did before. Again,

as I said, it is a new year. Everybody is starting from zero." Asked as to how difficult it is to be on top four, he said, "It is tough to get there. We will see. Again as I said it is beginning of the new season. We will have to see what is going to be there and I am working for it." On comparisons with Roger Federer and whether it bothers him he said, "I do things my own way and what

is best for me. I have had an amazing career so far. I have won big matches also in tournaments and keep my focus in my game." To a query on friction between Federer and him, Wawrinka said, "We won the Davis cup together and that is what happened. We finished the year together by winning the Davis Cup title and also we played exhibition matches at Zurich. So, I do not think anything else is important."

UMBAI: Skipper Suryakumar Yadav struck a superb century, his sixth in first-class cricket and second of the season, while young opener Akhil Herwadkar missed his ton by just three runs as Mumbai dominated Madhya Pradesh on day one of the four-day Group A Ranji Trophy match. The 24-year-old Yadav took full advantage of a pedestrian MP bowling attack to stroke his way to 135 off 145 balls, after openers Aditya Tare (37) and left-handed Herwadkar (97) laid a good foundation of 93 runs, to help Mumbai end the opening day at a commanding 375 for 4 in 87 overs. The only batsman to fail was no 3 Shreyas Iyer who came into the game after scoring a brilliant century against Bengal at Kolkata as the home batsmen made merry against

a toothless attack after being asked to bat first at the Wankhede Stadium. After the dismissals in quick succession of Tare, caught in the slip cordon, and Iyer - caught at covers, Herwadkar got involved in a breezy third wicket stand of 104 in 117 balls with his captain who struck 22 fours and a

A new era starts with unanswered questions

A

s the Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s era of Test cricket is consigned to the history books, a new chapter in India's fabled folklore is all set to begin with the belligerent 26-year-old Virat Kohli in charge. Kohli, apart from a few outbursts, has been 'Mr Consistent' on the current tour to Australia. Not only has he brought a new sense of aggression which was found lacking on most overseas tours India has travelled to, Kohli’s ‘give it back attitude’ has paved the way for a new form of cricket which the current lot of players profess these days. The ‘Mr. Finisher’ of India cricket has cast a shadow on the way he went about his retirement. Questions arise whether it was a thought out decision as Ravi Shastri, Director, Team India, puts it or it is a cover up of what happened in the dressing room after the second Test, where tension prevailed more off the field rather than on the field. The latter seems to be the more likely rather than Shastri’s theory. The wicket-keeper skipper stumped the Board of Control for Cricket in India officials too, when he conveyed his willingness to take off his gloves with immediate effect leaving the selectors and the board officials searching for answers. It definitely tells you the tale of the ‘divided’ dressing room which has now put its weight behind Virat Kohli. Kohli and Dhoni are two different sides of the sword. While Dhoni never went out sledging or provoking the opposition with his on-field bantering, it’s vice versa for Kohli who can’t resist a single opportunity to do so. Known to be a ‘brat’ by his opposition, all eyes will be more on Kohli’s active mouth and whether it will leave a sour taste on the legacy that former skippers have left behind. If the art of sledging has to be brilliantly countered, the West Indian teams were the perfect example – they didn’t speak a word and allowed the ball and bat to do all the talking. Will Kohli’s new found

Rhema SF score over Theresians was exciting, but the opening session failed to produce a single goal. However, after switching ends, Rhema took the lead when their hardworking striker Shahnawaz Warunkar cashed in an opening to find the net in the 49th minute.

Theresians fought on gamely and managed to neutralise the lead through Kevin D’Souza’s strike in the 58th minute before Nigel Fernandes scored in the 76th minute to help Rhema regain the lead, which they held on till the end of the match to

leadership allow the use of slurs on the field? Will that compromise the gentlemanly game called cricket? That will be apparent in due course of time. While the former skipper from Ranchi’s away record was rather appalling in the six years he skippered India, it was those string of overseas losses which first raised the questions on his inclination to continue in the longest format. The ‘no-rift’ theory, propounded by the Indian managers, seems far from evident as the grapevine is routing about Dhoni motive in making the Shikhar Dhawan-Virat Kohli fifth-day spat in the dressing room public. Could be the cause for his exit? One thing is certain, there was lot brewing that spoiled the broth. This also ended in Dhoni not travelling to meet the prime minister Tony Abbott’s customary tea which had members of both teams. It certainly wasn't a well thought out decision leaving the year wanting for answers. Whatever, the fate might have been, the skipper deserved a farewell test which is fitting enough to be accorded to the man who led India to the world cup win and took the Indian team to the top during his tenure. Whether they declare Wriddhiman Saha unfit to accommodate MS Dhoni for one last time or will he get an unceremonious exit, the team selection will decide that today morning. While one can hope the best for the Indian cricket and gamble with Kohli’s temperament and captaincy, the former captain’s exit mid-way leaves many stinking questions for the new skipper and the Indian management to answer. For the while, MSD who is preparing to lead India in the limited overs format presents a staunch silence in this case. to complete the tally. D.K. Pharma got their goals through B.
