day after the ADC reported on how the Bandra-Worli Rajiv Gandhi sea-link seems to have become a suicide-link as more than four suicides were reported in a span of two weeks from the same link, the Bombay High Court on Tuesday issued notices to state Home department and other authorities asking them to respond to a petition demanding measures to prevent suicides or possible terror attacks at Sea-link in the city. The ADC, in its report on Tuesday under the headline 'POPULAR SUICIDE-LINK' had highlighted that there was no end to the spate of suicides being reported from the BandraWorli Sea Link (BWSL) as another 40-year-old man jumped to his death on Monday morning from the Worli side of the sea-link.

Besides the Home department, notices were also issued to Mumbai Entry Point Infrastructure Developers (MEPID) which collects the toll at the Sea Link and Maharashtra State Road Development

Ketan Tirodkar. The PIL alleged that MEPID and MSRDC are not looking after the maintenance and security at the 4.8-km long bridge which is vulnerable to terrorist attacks. According to Tirodkar's petition, so far five cases of suicide by jumping from the bridge have been reported in recent times. However, there are only six CCTV cameras whereas the whole length requires 80 CCTV cameras, the PIL said. “We also want deployment of more, better-trained guards. Currently, only six to eight guards are posted on the bridge. The barriers and railing are around 4 feet high which is not sufficient to prevent jumping off the bridge, the PIL submitted. The toll collected on the sea-link was Rs.77.85 crore in 2012-13 and Rs.53.43 crore up to January 2014. A small portion of it is required for enhancing the security, the PIL said.

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2014 This year the theme for our nine feet Ganpati is the Pink City, Jaipur. Last year we had created the Maharashtra mandirs and earlier had created the Taj Mahal as well. We are on a mission to cover India and depict the story of each place.

or Goan Hindus, Ganesh Chaturthi is a major festival and it is a huge affair. While keeping a fast on the third day of the lunar month of Bhadrapada, women also worship Shiva and Gauri. Not only a hefty feast is organised, but also musical instruments associated with the Goan culture are played throughout the festival time. One interesting thing about the Goan rituals which is unique in itself is that they worship Ganesha in the form of Patri (leaves), pictorial representation or in small idol forms. Unlike the Maharashtrian way of celebration, the Goan Ganesha puja is a very homely affair. It's more of a family celebration rather than a public one. Even though in essence, different parts of India have different rituals, the core of the festival is the belief that Ganesha is the destroyer of all hindrance and will bring prosperity to our lives.

n the United States of America, the Sai Samsthan, a Hindu society in Warrenville, Illinois, supposedly organises the grandest Ganesh Chaturthi celebration in the USA, which is attended by thousands of local Indians as well as people of other nationalities. Other well known organisations to hold the Ganesh puja are the North American Sankethi Association of New York and The Hindu Temple Society in Miami, Florida. The festival sees local Indians striving to observe all the rituals as perfectly as possible including the organising of the festive parades and the immersion of the idols. At the end of the celebrations, the idols of Lord Ganesha are given a festive farewell in the local rivers and seas. While in Miami, the Ganesha idols are immersed in the sea in the north of Miami, in San Francisco Bay Area the devotees take their Lord to the Baker Beach for immersion.

The hands carry the image of Goddess Saraswati, Narshima, Murugan and Gautam Buddha. All these images are transmitted through the LED lights.

Eco-friendly metro: This eco-friendly Ganpati is made of wheat flour and rolls of paper, which has 'Om', 'Ram' and other such names written on it. The colours used on the idol are also eco-friendly. The flute is made of bamboo sticks and the other musical instruments are constructed out of utensils, cardboard, sun-board and newspapers.

Kavita Takane Metro “The inspiration of the Ganpati made from rolls of paper inscripted with the names of different Gods came from my brothe-inlaw, he is a very religious person and he gave the idea to make Ganpati from it. I am an art teacher and my daughter was urging me to make a music inspired theme and that is when I got the idea to create different music instruments from cardboard, newspaper and sunboard.”

Modi is also a skillful drummer

A city discharged TO a non-Mumbaikar, even someone who stays in the suburbs or its satellite cities, the reaction of the city-dwellers to the power cuts is nothing short of amusing. “We felt nostalgic and were taken back to the old world without computers and laptop”, “Schools should have declared a holiday owing to the power cut” – statements like these can only sound funny to people who face power cuts almost every day for a couple of hours in some cities. Some in the villages even experience load-

shedding for as long as nine to 12 hours a day. The astonishing reactions of Mumbaikars to the power cuts suddenly makes them look like first-world citizens, with the young witnessing a power cut for the first time in their lives and the old reminiscing about their childhood. Many even expressed their complete inability to function in offices and educational institutions without electricity. It is interesting how the city fumbles without electricity even as its immediate neighbours calmly deal with this everyday affair.

Obama overwhelmed by Indian-American’s newly built mansion ONE fine morning this summer, Indian-American Frank Islam received an unexpected call from the US President, Barack Obama. The call was neither for a fund raiser, nor for discussing any policy issues, but to 'appreciate' the desk in Islam's library, which is a replica of the Resolute, the desk in the White House's Oval Office. The replica of the iconic Resolute desk, first placed in the Oval Office by President John F. Kennedy and used by Obama, is not the only US Presidential memorabilia in Islam's newly built mansion in a 10 acre plot in Potomac, one of the richest suburbs of Washington. The grand foyer has a domed ceiling, reminiscent of Capitol Rotunda or Statuary Hall. There are also hand-painted murals depicting Maryland landscapes. Obama, during the conversation said that Vice-President, Joe Biden told him about his mansion and described its unique features, including the exact replica of the presidential desk at Oval office. Obama's call to Islam came after Biden attended a fundraiser event at his house on July 11 and described the house as "beautiful with gorgeous landscape". Islam moved into 'Norton Manor', as he and his wife Debbie

PM Narendra Modi's skills as a drummer were on full display during his Tokyo visit on Tuesday as he joined the Japanese percussionists to perform a 'jugalbandi' with them. The 63-year-old leader gave tough competition to the professional drummers as he tried his hand on the drum at an event to launch TCS Japan Technology & Cultural Academy in Tokyo. He first watched the male and female drummers perform and seemingly was enjoying. Then he moved forward and started beating the drums quite well, much to the amusement of the gathering. On the occasion, he invited Japanese people to visit and explore India and spread the word about their experience.

he city which has more than a century-old history of electricity supply, suffered its first ever major blackout on account of a service provider, due to tripping of unit 5 of Trombay Tata Power station on Tuesday morning. Consequently, almost all installations were shut down except local train services and nuclear installations. Even defence installations under Western Naval Command (WNC) headquarters, in south Mumbai suffered electricity supply shortage. It had affected the crucial communication system of the Navy for short period, officials said. Extent of dam-

age is yet to be ascertained. Mumbai city which enjoys privilege as the commercial capital of country, witnessed a daylong blackout. Earlier, on July 26, 2005, city had a blackout but that was due to a natural calamity. Officials said that power supply may be restored by Tuesday night. The worst part is, while power is available in neighbouring areas of Maharashtra, however due to overloading of state transmission network, it has not been possible to

import power for Mumbai by these distribution companies. The distribution companies are now doing a rotational load shedding in their respective areas of about 200-300 MW, officials said. Almost all installations in city and eastern suburbs including hospitals, nursing homes, central and state government offices, commercial establishments, courts, colleges, schools, subways were adversely affected by the outage. eople residing near Kurla (west) railway station and many parts of Kurla including the Kohinoor complex had a harrowing time yesterday as they had to face an eight-hour power cut due to the tripping of Tata Power Unit 5 of the Trombay Power Station which provides about 500 MW of power to South and Central Mumbai. The schools in the area, namely, Anjuman Islam High School, Karthika High School, Orchid International School and others functioned without electricity. The ADC interacted with few residents from Kurla West, Kurla East and Tilak Nagar. Sheetal Sharma (20), a student residing in Tilak Nagar said, “The power cut in my house was for only half an hour and I'm glad that the power was

restored soon. However, I heard from many people that there is no power in major parts of Kurla.” Kunal Shah (25), software engineer residing in Kohinoor said, “We were in office without electricity for two hours after which our boss discovered that the power will not be restored soon. Although the office was closed at that point, after returning home I faced the same problem. My family members informed me that there has been no power since six hours.” Aftab Khan (30), resident of Kurla West, noted, “If the power cut was to be there for such a long time then why didn't the companies inform us beforehand. My children have gone to school and they later informed me that there was no electricity in the schools as well. The schools should have declared a holiday.”

Power cut brings nostalgia to Sessions Court By Santia Dudi

he Sessions Court on Tuesday looked like the Sessions Court of yore with manual typewriters, stenos, and batteries out in force thanks to the power cut in Mumbai. 55-year-old court staffer, Ram Singh, said, “When I started working in this court there were no computers or laptops. Briefs used to be typed on manual typewriters. There were no computers to save details so there were files for every thing. Everything was manual. Today I feel that the same situation has arrived. Though it's a sad thing because everything has come to a halt after power cut, but we all can learn a lesson from this and do our part to save electricity. Otherwise this

can be an everyday situation.” A young advocate told the ADC that the court rooms were functional but important things like hearing of witnesses, important judgments and bails were postponed. “Judges gave briefs and stenos used manual typewriters for taking notes. I wonder how life was when computers, laptops and servers were not there.” Some of the judges used torches to read the minute details as judgments were likely to be passed. The entire court tried hard to look for alternatives. Advocate clerk Avatar Singh (name changed) said, “The court was partially functional. Judges found it difficult to give briefs, important information is on the server which was not functional because of the power cut.”

And to people who needed two or three strips of a particular medicine, I gave only one strip because I had to make sure they were available for others who would need it.” At around 7:30pm, the chemist was still awaiting his stock. “Thankfully, I had decent stock with me and I was able to manage. But I hope this doesn't go on for long though,” he said. Manish Jain, owner of the Welcome Group, who supplies medicines to about 65 per cent of Mumbai's chemists, too, had a difficult day. “Business was zero today as I could not send out stocks. It is im-

possible for me to make handwritten bills because of details like batch number, maximum retail price and expiry date,” said Jain at Wadala, where power was cut since 9.30 am, and remained cut till evening. Ajay Joshi, zonal leader (G North), Retail and Dispensing Chemists Association (RDCA) said, “Several chemists have faced a lot of difficulties because of the power cut. People did not get the required quantity of medicines. What can we do? Selling medicines without bills is not allowed. What if the FDA questions us about the sales tomorrow?” shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

City hospitals have a smooth day part of the day but the quick switch to the generator made sure that the functioning of the hospital was not hampered,” said the spokesperson. But people at the hospital said that the power cut was an hour and a half long. “The generator is there but there are certain machines in the hospital, which when switched off, take time to reboot. Fortunately, there were no major issues because of the power cut,” said a hospital staffer.

Sion hospital which had a 20minute power cut also managed to get power back in the hospital with the help of generators. “We had a 15 to 20-minute power cut but the hospital would have been without power for maybe half a minute because that is the time taken for the generators to start. All the emergency services and units are attached to generators. So the hospital was not affected at all,” said Dr Avinash Supe, Dean, Sion hospital.

he Vakola police has taken custody of a 23-year-old man accused of duping a senior citizen inside a multinational bank while two of his colleagues, suspected of duping people in different parts of the city, are still at large. According to sources at the Vakola police station, the arrested man and his absconding friends are from from Patil Nagar in Ambivali, Thane.

About a week ago, the Andheri police arrested Abutirab Javed Irani, when a bank employee noticed that the three of them were trying to swindle a senior citizen out of his money, on the CCTV camera. As the bank employees attempted to catch the trio, two managed to escape but Abutirab was caught. According to Sub-Inspector Santosh Rasam from the Vakola police station, “These three always target senior citizens who cannot fill up forms on their own and cannot count

money after withdrawing it. They are always well-dressed when they approach their victim, who is usually alone.” Abutirab was arrested by the Andheri police, from where the Vakola police took custody of him. He is wanted for a crime he allegedly committed along with his two colleagues about a month ago, said Rasam. About a month ago, Abutirab and his colleagues had allegedly duped a 56-year-old lady inside the State Bank of India (Vakola).

At that time, Abutirab had approached the lady when she was going to deposit Rs 30,000 and said, “Maaji, Aapne note ke number nahi daalen hain” (Aunty, you did not written the currency number in your receipt). On the pretext of helping her, he managed to rob Rs 17,500. Abutirab's partners in crime, Samnir Naushaad Iraani and Feeron Iraani, are wanted in the case, which has been produced before the court and Abutirab has been remanded to police custody.

ore often than not in recent years Mumbai has been the target of criminal and anti-national elements. But the Mumbai Police has tackled this menace excellently in the course of every such incident. Mumbai Police receives regular inputs from intelligence agencies regarding nefarious activities of anti-national elements and has its own mechanism to tackle such bad elements. One is the Anti-Terrorist Squad. Mumbai Police also has Anti-Terrorist Cell (ATC) in every local police station that comprises one sub-inspector and four constables. In all 92 police stations of Mumbai, ATC functions diligently, cracking sleeper cells of terrorists and network of criminal elements. The ATC, apart from keeping an eye on suspects in their jurisdictions, also looks for people having SIMI connections with jihadi mindsets who indoctrinate young minds to even work for international terrorist groups like the ISIS in Iraq.

Police Commissioner Rakesh Mari has been regularly appealing to citizens to provide antecedents of people while renting out their flats. Criminal elements from UP, Bengal, Bihar and even from south Indian states stay on rent in Mumbai to carry out their nefarious activities before fleeing. Landlords who rent out flats or rooms fall prey to the greed as these elements pay high

umbai's crime branch on Monday reunited a 15-yearold boy, who had run away from his house in Karnataka to experience the fast life of Mumbai, with his parents. Police personnel from Unit III department of crime branch located the boy, Navratna Sharma, with a Mumbai-based footwear shop owner. Interestingly, for the last one month the boy was staying with Pankaj Chavan (35), who has a footwear shop in the Elphistone Road area of Central Mumbai. On August 5, Navratna, son of a rich businessman in Karnataka, ran away from his house with Rs 12,000 in cash, said the police. HIs father, Punamchand, had sent the boy to deposit money in the bank, which was near their house, but in-

stead he ran away from home. Soon after coming to the city, Navratna got petrified and came in contact with Pankaj. He told the latter his story of running from his house and coming to Mumbai, said Arvind Sawant, senior inspector of Unit III. In a bid to prevent any untoward incident, Pankaj kept the boy with him, who happily on his won, stayed with him. When the police got information about the boy staying with Pankaj, that latter handed over the boy to the cops. Pankaj had treated the boy with utmost care and concern, said Sawant. Meanwhile, the boy has been handed over to the police in Karnataka. After appropriate procedure the boy will be handed over to his parents by the police in Karnataka. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Hence, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sangramsingh Nishandar (Zone-VI) ordered ATC officials to spread awareness on regular basis to housing societies, chawl owners and slum dwellers to ensure proper police verification before renting out their premises. Gyaneshwar Mohite, police subinspector from Deonar Police said, “In the month of August, I arrested five persons under section 188 of the IPC for renting out their premises without doing police verification. They were later produced in court and were granted bail.” In eastern suburbs, DCP Sangramsingh Nishandar has instructed all his senior PIs to provide required police security to Ganesh mandals, keep an eye on suspects including increase in patrolling. “For having smooth and safe Sarvajanik Ganesh festival, Mumbai police is all geared up,” stated Nishandar. fter actress Nafeesa Rizvi Khan, well-known as Jiah Khan, was found dead at her residence in Sagar Sangeet building, Juhu, last year, another Bollywood actress was found hanging inside her flat at Yari Road in Versova on Saturday. Before committing suicide, the actress had left a suicide note which mentioned that no one should be held responsible for this step. She said in the note that she had taken this drastic step willingly. She had mailed the suicide note to her own gmail account through her iPad. The actress, identified as Sayan Khanna alias Mona Khanna (28), who acted in movies like 'The Haunted House' and another tobe-released movie, was residing alone at her flat in Yari Road. During investigation, the police found that she made her last phone call to her boyfriend whose identity has been kept confiden-

tial. On the day of the incident, she asked her younger sister to go to the market to buy some vegetables. Her sister, studying in Dehradun, was staying with Mona from July 22 in Mumbai. Before asking her to go the market, the actress hugged her sister and asked her not to disturb her after returning as she was going to rest. According to Senior Police Inspector from Versova police station Arundhati Rane, “The incident came to light after Mona's sister returned from the market. Mona had locked her room from inside and her iPad was playing a song on loop. On the day of the incident, she went to meet him in the evening but when she came back, she was depressed. Five families who were removed from their chawls by a builder on the promise of providing flats in the SRA scheme. 12 years down the line they are still living in the transit camp

S

eventy-year-old Sayyed Hakim can't see. But he still believes that one day he will get a flat of his own and will live there peacefully. The residents of a chawl at Kala Kila, Dharavi were asked to vacate their rooms in 2002. Under an SRA scheme they were promised flats by Mahalaxmi Builders. Once the SRA building was complete, the residents of the huts where the building is situated got their flats. But those whose huts were in the path to the building are still waiting for their flats as promised by the builder. These five families had no option but to live in the Sion transit camp, Prime Minister's Grant Programme (PMGP) colony Dharavi. For the past 12 years they are living in the rooms of the transit camp. But eight months ago they were asked to vacate the transit camp. Mohammad Ali Sayyed (29) works as a driver and is living at the transit camp. He told ADC, “I have a three-year-old daughter. Doctors say that she is mentally sick. Her development is not normal. This filthy condition of this transit camp is making her condition worse. Doctors has asked me to admit her as it's better for her to not to live in this environment.” He further added, “We have spent 12 years in this place hoping that one day the builder will fulfill his promise and allot us the flat. But now he doesn't even meet us or reply to our calls. And eight months ago Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority (MHADA) people came and asked us to vacate

Affected families outside the transit camp trying to show the filthy and dilapidated condition of the camp. (Inset: 70-year-old Sayyed Hakim along with his wife) the place. They said that the transit camp is in a dilapidated condition and it has to be demolished as soon as possible. Before this Bakri-eid they will demolish the camp. Then where will we go? My daughter's treatment is going on. I can't bear the expenses of moving to another place.” Sayyed Hakim (70) is an old man with lot of ailments. His wife Saira Sayyed takes care of him. She said, “My husband can't see. There is no

toilet in this transit camp. We all have to walk down to a toilet which is 500 metres away. Every time I have to take him to this far away toilet. It's not an easy job. He is suffering from a lung problem. The dirt and the filth of the place is adding to his ailment. I can't leave him alone for a minute. And because the toilet is at a distance of 500 metres, it is extremely tough for me to manage. He still has hope that one day he will get to live in his own flat. But

the builder is still making false promises. It has been 12 years and now we have been asked to vacate this place also. Where am I supposed to take him in such a bad condition?” The monsoon makes the condition of the place worse. The filth directly comes into their rooms. 30-year-old Amina Jabbar Khan said, “We are in a very bad condition. At times worms come along with the water. We have to spend

uesday morning saw scores of local trains terminated and several others delayed on the Central Railway line as an overhead equipment (OHE) wire broke down between Ghatkopar and Vikhroli. The break-down took place 7.16 am between Ghatkopar and Vikroli on the slow track, officials informed. Since it was the morning peak hour, it caused inconvenience to many officer-goers as 69 services were terminated. Meanwhile, Up and Dn slow trains were diverted on Up and Dn fast line between Matunga and Mulund. It took more than four hours for the Central Railway engineers to restore the OHE. According to railway officials, the line was restored around 11 am and services were resumed at 11.10 am. Meanwhile, to facilitate the office-goers, railway officials coordinated with BEST and State Transport officials.

And the builder is just not giving any response. Once the MHADA people come and ask us to leave the place, we have no option but to live on the footpath.” Attempts by the ADC to contact the MHADA officials on this issue were futile.

The explosion on the Overhead electric wire between Vikhroli and Ghatkopar on Tuesday.

65-year-old jeweller was seriously injured during a botched robbery attempt at his showroom in Vasai on Tuesday afternoon. The brazen day light crime has sent shock-waves amongst the local jeweller fraternity which has geared up to launch an agitation against the lawlessness prevailing in the region. According to the police, the matter was reported from Sanghvi Jewellers – a gold ornaments shop in the Navghar-Manekpur Naka area of Vasai at about 2 pm on Tuesday. An unidentified man armed with a knife barged into the shop and attempted to make off with the ornaments. However, when Sanghvi tried to resist the robbery bid, the assailant was forced to retreat empty-handed but not before mounting a violent attack on the shop-owner. A profusely bleeding Sanghvi who suffered multiple injuries on his neck and face was rushed to a nearby hospital where his condition continues to be critical. While this shop has been targeted twice in the past two months, the miscreants had apparently carried out an elaborate recce before striking a hit on Tuesday. Ironically there were no CCTV cameras installed in the shop.

By A Special Correspondent

C

hief Minister Prithviraj Chavan yesterday lambasted the Narendra Modi government describing it as a total failure in its first 100 days in office. Speaking to reporters at the state Congress headquarters, Chavan took dig at Prime Minister over his “Minimum government-maximum governance” slogan. He said, “Minimum government is complete control of the Prime Minister’s office (over the government). Even the Home Minister is not allowed to appoint an aide of his choice. Ministers are being spied on. Stories about this are deliberately leaked and denials are issued. None of the promises made during the Lok Sabha election cam-

paign, including checking price rise and bringing back black money stashed abroad, has been fulfilled. Still they are talking about the governance.” Amid a row over the Prime Minister's proposed televised interaction with students on Teachers' Day, Chavan today

said, “The state government is co-operating with logistics, keeping the delicate Centrestate relations in mind but there is severe resentment among teachers and parents. However, the tone of the circular is not good and we will take it up at an appropriate forum. The entire official machinery is being used as a propaganda machine for one individual. I am not against children being asked to listen to the Prime Minister but the manner in which it is being enforced is highly objectionable.” “I have been warning against the crisis since the Prime Minister’s visit to Solapur last month. However, through a pre-planned conspiracy, I was not allowed to speak at the function. Humiliating Chief Ministers from rival parties is a dangerous

trend which will harm Centre-state relations,” he added further. “The state was getting only 60 per cent of the coal earmarked for it. Of the state’s requirement of 10,000 MW13,000 MW, it is facing a shortage of 3,000 MW. Several power plants have shut down due to shortage of coal, gas and water. The Centre should not try to plunge Maharashtra into darkness. I had met Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and NCP chief Sharad Pawar to discuss the situation. I also told him that the Prime Minister should convene a meeting of all Chief Ministers to find a solution to the crisis. But there is a lack of leadership at the Centre which is troubling Maharashtra,” he pointed out.

RPI(A) wants to contest 14-15 Assembly seats R

epublican Party of India (Athawale), a part of Shiv Sena-BJP-led alliance, on Tuesday said it is keen to contest at least 14-15 seats in the upcoming Assembly polls in Maharashtra and hopes to win a dozen of them to emerge as a state-level recognised party. Talking to PTI, RPI chief Ramdas Athawale said his party has submitted a list of 20 Assembly seats to the Sena-BJP and hoped the Dalit outfit gets to fight at least 1415 of them. "We have submitted a list of 20 probable seats to our alliance partners and we hope we get to fight from at least 14-15 of those. To make RPI a recognised party in the state, we will have to send at least 12 MLAs to the Vidhan Sabha. We hope our alliance partners consider this fact," he said. The saffron alliance, which put up a robust show in the Lok Sabha election - winning 42 of the 48 constituencies is yet to seal a pact for the 288-member House amid re-

ports of differences between Sena and BJP over their quota of seats. Athawale claimed the Narendra Modi government has done more work in 100 days than what its predecessor did in 100 months and said the BJP-led administration is committed towards bringing down prices of essential commodities. "Prime Minister Modi said he will bring good days (acche din) for India. But even he cannot bring acche din in one day. In the last 100 days, the government has done more work than what the previous government could do in 100 months. The government is trying hard to bring down prices of essential commodities," the former State Minister said. Athawale was talking to the media on the sidelines of a function where former IAS officer Uttam Khobragade joined the party, the most influential among nearly half a dozen RPI factions active in the State politics.

BJP too has I failed to bring down prices T

HE Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had promised before the Lok Sabha elections that if elected, it would take, as a priority item, quick steps to bring down prices. The BJP blamed the Congress for its ten-year misrule during which it ignored the escalating price rise. Food prices had gone up beyond the reach of the people. BJP’s Narendra Modi, who was the party’s chairman of the poll committee, declared that the first thing he would do was to take up the price issue. The party, however, has not seriously taken up the issue threemonths after it came into power. All that the party leaders said was something about hoarding and increase in the export duty on some essential articles. However nothing concrete was done. People who had voted for the BJP expectedthat when the party took over, it would address first the issue of price hike which is affecting not only crores of poor people but also those in the middle class. People who have been affected by the continuing worsening price situation are today disappointed and disillusioned. They have started saying that there “is nothing to choose between the Congress and the BJP”. It would be perhaps useful to undertake an investigation to find out why it has not been possible to bring down prices and what are the existing actualities in this regard.

N our cabinet system, the Prime Minister is the first among equals. In other words, the PM is clearly the number one. The rest of the ministers enjoy equal status while making allowances for seniority and age. Yet, except when a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family has been at the helm, there has always been a tussle for a designated number two. The struggle has often been unseemly, sometimes just comic, but the friction at the top has rocked governments to the point where they’ve almost been destabilized. The Rajnath Singh drama that played out last week, therefore, is part of an unfolding pattern that needs to be addressed to stop similar spectacles in future. Rajnath’s very public explosion over rumours about his son was a calculated tactic to force Modi’s hand and get the PM to endorse him as his secondin-command so that the pecking order is spelt out clearly to other senior ministers in the Union cabinet. He also roped in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to intervene on his behalf. He was only partially successful. A rap from RSS bosses prompted Modi’s PMO to issue its first ever statement denying the rumours and reposing faith in Rajnath. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah followed suit within minutes with a similar statement. But there is still no formal acknowledgement that Rajnath holds the number two position in the ministerial hierarchy. Our Constitution does not recognize the post of deputy prime minister. But when the pressure has been too painful to bear, past PMs have issued executive orders designating their number two person. Vajpayee, for instance, finally gave in to Advani’s pressure tactics and appointed him deputy prime minister in 2002 when he was well into his fifth year as PM. Devi Lal bargained hard, first with V.P. Singh and then with Chandra Shekhar to bag the title of deputy prime minister. So did Charan Singh when the first nonCongress government was formed by the Janata Party after Indira Gandhi’s post-Emergency defeat. In fact, the Janata Party government was forced to concede two posts of deputy PM – one to Charan Singh, the other to Jagjivan Ram. Narasimha Rao spent his years as PM playing off Sharad Pawar against Arjun Singh as they vied with each other to be nominated as deputy PM. Interestingly, it was the Nehru-Patel duo that came up with the proposition of ap-

pointing a deputy PM. Patel held the post along with the home ministry portfolio. The aim was to stabilize the infant government by establishing a clear hierarchy and leaving no room for power play. Patel died suddenly and after him, Nehru did not feel any pressure to fill the post of deputy PM because no-one quite measured up to the stature of being appointed a number two. There have been seven deputy PMs since Independence. Rajnath clearly aims to be the eighth. But Modi doesn’t seem to be in any

HE definition of spiritual attainment can be found in the study of human nature. For the nature of man is one and the same, be he spiritual or material. There are five things that man yearns for: life, power, knowledge, happiness, and peace, and the continual appetite which is felt in the deepest self yearns for one or other of these five things. In order to fulfill the desire to live man eats and drinks and protects himself from all dangers of life. And yet his appetite will never be fully satisfied, because though he may escape all dangers, yet the last danger, which man calls death, he cannot escape. In order to obtain power, which is the next thing, a man does everything to gain physical strength, influence, or rank. He seeks every kind of power. And he always runs up against disappointments, because he will find that wherever there is a power of ten degrees,

T’S not just the Modi government that is silent. The BJP too has fallen silent ever since it won the election. The party has held only two proper briefings for the media since May 26 when Narendra Modi was sworn in as PM. The silence is odd because the BJP has never been at a loss for words. It has held daily briefings for the past ten years, even when there was little to say. The Modi doctrine of keeping quiet has obviously been clamped on the party as well. By contrast, the Congress continued with its three times a week briefing right through its ten years in government. And even today, it speaks to the press every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

It’s all work and no play for bureaucrats

P

OWER ministry bureaucrats are wondering whether 100 days of the Modi government are acche din or burre din. They definitely had a bad night recently when they were called to Race Course Road to make their presentation for the 100 days celebrations. The meeting was supposed to begin at 7 p.m. but the officials had to cool their heels for three hours because PM Narendra Modi was busy. Finally, they were called in at 10 p.m. Even as the presentation got underway, the PM had to leave for an urgent call. As the minutes ticked by and the PM didn’t return, the power ministry top brass assumed that the meeting would continue the next day as it had got very late. They went home only to receive summons from RCR at 1:30 a.m. that the PM wanted them back to finish the presentation. The

This desire promotes a tendency to study. A man might study and study all through his life, but even if he read all the books in all the great libraries there would still remain the question, 'why?' T seems the United States may not treat PM Narendra Modi’s forthcoming visit to Washington as a state visit. It’s likely to be billed as a working visit. This means that there will be no formal state banquet. Instead, US President Barack Obama may host a lunch for Modi at the White House. The reason for not treating it as a state visit is that the trip is essentially an opportunity for Modi and the Obama administration to get to know each other. Substantive agreements are unlikely. This is in sharp contrast to Manmohan Singh’s first visit to the US as Prime Minister in July 2005 which saw the two sides announcing the path-breaking civil nuclear agreement. There is still one month for the visit which gives the two governments time to work on an agreement matching the one between Manmohan Singh and George Bush. But sources say that despite the rhetoric, nothing much emerged from the recent visits of secretary of state John Kerry and secretary of defence Chuck Hagel to India.

first place nature is so profound that man's limited life is not long enough to probe its depths. Comparatively or relatively one may say that one person is more learned than another, but no one reaches true satisfaction by the other study of life. The fourth kind of appetite is happiness. Man tries to satisfy it by pleasures, not knowing that the pleasures of this world cannot make up for that happiness which his soul really seeks after. Man's attempts are in vain. He will find in the end that every effort he made for pleasure brought greater loss than gain. Besides that which is not enduring, which is not real in its nature, is never satisfactory. Lastly there is the appetite for peace. In order to find peace one leaves one's environment which troubles one. One wants to get away from people, one wants to sit quietly and rest. But he who is not ready for that peace would not find it even if he went to the caves of the Himalayas, away from the whole world. – Hazrat Inayat Khan

Let’s have an eco-friendly Ganpati GANESH Chaturthi is Mumbai's biggest religious festival but the sanctity of the festivities is lost in the hullabaloo of noise, water pollution and litter all around. Bringing a Ganesh idol has become a fad rather than religious sentiments and everybody brings Him in because their neighbour does. Public celebrations should be restricted to one idol per 100 meters which increases religious values as one celebrates in groups which helps in increasing unity and brotherhood among the people. Idols need to be made of metals which should not be immersed and used year after year and a small eco-friendly Ganesh idol must be immersed as tokenism. If every household does likewise, we can prevent water pollution and check traffic jams in the city. A simple law on sound decibels can check sound pollution. Ban loudspeakers for film songs and play only religious numbers at low volumes to enjoy the festivities. If people consider public places as their own homes and use dustbins to dispose litter, Lord Ganesha would be very pleased and shower his blessings on us always. Also, reusable materials should be used which are not only economical but helps in keeping our environment safe. These little simple things would go a long way to keep our environment safe.

The question is immature – all Gods are myths and hence you can have any story concocted and connected with them. Why take the question seriously at all? As for the timing of the question, this is the time to ask proper questions about Lord Ganesha. And a more relevant question is – why is it that the God who is supposed to remove obstacles is being used to create the maximum man-made obstacles? Manikchand and Oxyrich are the two biggest competitors. The fact is contrary to the much quoted cliché – don’t mix religion and politics, they are actually two sides of the same coin. God and religion are man-made to enable the establishment mafia to politically and socially control the masses. That’s why we need laws on blasphemy and sacrilege laws, because God does NOT exist – hence he does not even file an FIR and in any case definitely cannot punish. Hence the usurping of such powers by the political class for their own preservation. Question – if God controls everyone’s life, he is responsible for all the crimes also. Right? Any answers? — T R Ramaswami, Kandivali

ONE of the reasons that Lord Gane-

sha is revered and worshiped everywhere in India and abroad is that the God is associated with the removal of all obstacles in life as well as giving success and prosperity. This belief and reverence is not something which can be seen in India only but also in many other parts of the world where Lord Ganesha is worshiped in various forms. Here are many parts of India where there is a very strong belief that Lord Ganesha is not a bramhachari but a married man. His wives are supposed to be Siddhi (success or spiritual power), Buddhi (intellect) and Riddhi (prosperity). Hence, it is believed that if people worship Lord Ganesha, these three qualities of spiritual power, intellect and prosperity automatically follow you and become a part of your life since being wives, they cannot stay separated from the Lord. There are many parts of India wherein the belief of the lord marrying Riddhi and Siddhi is very strong and in someway, they too are worshiped. According to another set of beliefs, Lord Ganesha is also associated with the Goddess of culture and arts called ShardaMata or Saraswati Mata. This is a belief particularly in Maharashtra. He is also believed to have a consort in Lakshmi. Goddess Saraswati gives intelligence and Lakshmi is the Goddess of wealth. Combining these two, there is always success and prosperity in whatever people do as long as they are worshiping the Lord in the correct form and with complete devotion. Invoking the Elephant God gives the courage and will power to fight against all odds. — C K Subramaniam, Sanpada

UPA. This is preposterous to say the least. You can fool some of the people some of the time but you cannot fool all the people all the time! The UPA government had a whopping time span of 10 years to 'meddle' with the economy and you did nothing all these years and it was only during the fag end of your tenure that you thought it fit to introduce some changes which were populist in nature and you were fittingly rewarded for that with an overwhelmingly negative mandate at the hustings. Also the grim and gloomy economic scenario that prevailed in the UPA regime can also be supported by the fact that the growth rate was less than five per cent in the last two financial years. What did you do all these years? — Hemant Hemmady, Virar

Prayers have power ON September 8 every year, we celebrate the feast day (birthday) of Our Blessed Mother Mary. But not many of us actually venerate or revere our Blessed Mother. Families have no time to pray the rosary. And if ever it is prayed, the Our Fathers and the Hail Mary’s are recited just like parrots without having any meaning at all, because the Head of the family has just returned home from work and is tired. Besides, the wife has to prepare the meals and the children have to watch their favourite serial on TV. At Bandra, people go to the fair, but have no time to go to the Church to venerate Our Lady (Mount Mary’s Basilica). Even at Irla (Vileparle), it is the same thing. I would blame the parents and not the children for not teaching their children to pray the rosary. — Jubel D’Cruz, Dombivili

Weird municipal whims APROPOS 'Lakes full: Costly, weird water plans on' (ADC, Sep 1), as is rightly observed by the ADC diarist that every year especially while the first monsoon month of June does have scanty or no rainfall, these weird plans of well boring, cloud seeding etc, un-practicable plans, would set to unfolding from the BMC to beat the water shortage. In fact, they should rather strictly ensure the LETTER OF THE DAY wastage/loss of this natural precious commodity by arresting the leakages in the water supply mains, rectifying the worn out water mains to contain huge loss of water by pipe bursting as these sections become so poor structurally that the normal water pressure causes rapture. Water mafia should be stopped, free supply of water to the politically privileged people should be stopped. About cloud seeding, thank God that such a situation has not still been faced so far, that the BMC would be only left with this option, as this would be thoroughly un-eco-friendly. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

THE HRD minister, true to her 'credentials', has made an unsavoury and quite unnecessary mess of the Teachers' Day by first changing its name to 'Guru Utsav' and then directing all the schools in the country to see that their pupils watch the PM's Teachers' Day telecast without fail. The Teachers' Day has been in vogue for decades to commemorate the birthday of the great teacherphilosopher, Dr S Radhakrishnan, a former President. So why this sudden brainwave to change it now? And then the word 'utsav' does not fit in at all since the day is not celebrated as a festival. 'Sikshak Diwas' is already being used by several TV channels and that is quite correct. As for making it compulsory for all the school children to watch the PM's address, the less said the better it will be. SLAMABAD: Amid fears of violence and army intervention in the coup-prone nation, a cornered Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday turned to Parliament for support with his government slamming the protests as a "mutiny against Pakistan". Leaders from across the political spectrum backed Sharif at an emergency joint session of the Parliament convened to support the Prime Minister and discuss the current impasse. Most of the leaders expressed their resolute support for Sharif in the wake of anti-government protests headed by Pakistan Tehreeki-Insaf's (PTI) chairman Imran Khan and cleric Tahirul-Qadri of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT). "This Parliament should remove the misconception that this is a democratic process. This is not a protest, not a dharna or a political gathering. This is mutiny against Pakistan," Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar told Parliament. "They reached the gates of the Supreme Court, of Parliament... Yesterday they entered another state building and chanted slogans of 'Tahir-ul-Qadri Zindabad',"

he said, referring to the storming of the PTV Islamabad office. Nisar said the protesters were armed and had support of up to 1,500 trained militants of an extremist organisation which he did not name. Dubbing the protesters as "intruders", he urged the Parliament to declare their actions as a mutiny against the state and asked lawmakers to "guide" the government in dealing with them. The Supreme Court, while hearing a set of petitions against sit-ins of Khan and Qadri, today issued notices to all parliamentary parties as well as to PAT to resolve the ongoing political impasse within the parameters of the Constitution. The four-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Nasir-ul Mulk issued notices after petitioner Zulfiqar Naqvi pleaded that all parties be summoned so the deadlock can be resolved. The developments came after late last night, the staterun PTV quoted Prime Minister Sharif as saying that neither he will resign, nor will he go on leave. According to a joint statement issued after the opposi-

of the Parliament building. Prime Minister Sharif did not speak yesterday and the discussion was to continue tomorrow with the Speaker adjourning the House. At the end of debate, the joint sitting will adopt a resolution to support Sharif and urge him not to resign or go on leave as demanded by Khan and Qadri, sources told PTI.

EIJING: On a key visit to firm-up the ground for President Xi Jinping's visit to Delhi, Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said China has shown keen interest to commit major investments in India besides addressing its concerns over trade deficit. Sitharaman also travelled by the Chinese Bullet train from Beijing to Tianjin, a distance of 113 km, which it covers in 30 minutes. China is keen to market its bullet train in India. Briefing the Indian media here after her over two-and-a- half hour talk with her Chinese counterpart Gao Hucheng, Sitharaman said expectation are high about large-scale Chinese investments in India which could be announced during Xi's visit, expected in the third week of this month. "I can safely say that there is lot of interest and keenness" on the part of Chinese side to make Xi's visit a big success.” "As much as we are working, they are also working to have good decisions announced during this high-profile visit." This is Sitharaman's second visit to Beijing since June when she accompanied Vice President Hamid Ansari. The two sides during her visit then signed an MoU on facilitating Chinese industrial parks in India. A Chinese delegation is currently visiting several places in India to study the location to set up manufacturing facility.

ELBOURNE: Ahead of his visit to India, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Tuesday strongly supported sealing of the much-awaited uranium export deal with the country under "suitable safeguards". "I make the point if we are prepared to sell uranium to Russia, and we've been prepared to do that in the past, surely we ought to be prepared to provide uranium to India under suitable safeguards," Abbott said. "India is a full functioning democracy with the rule of law," he said, adding that his government was working with India to put suitable safeguards in place. He said Australia should be prepared to provide "support" and that is what his upcoming visit would be about.

Abbott will arrive in Delhi on tomorrow to further strengthen the strategic partnership and promote trade and investment between the two countries. Earlier, Australian Trade Minister Andrew Robb, who will accompany Abbott on his India visit, said, "We have satisfied ourselves that the steps are in place." Media reports recently said the two sides have reached the deal on the civil nuclear agreement, which will be formally signed by Prime Minister Abbott during his visit. The negotiations between the two sides have been on since 2012 after Labor party reversed its decision to ban the uranium sale to India because New Delhi has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

"The negotiations and work that's gone on between authorities in India and Australia have gone on for some years to develop a bilateral nuclear cooperation agreement which meets the international requirements and we are satisfied, our officials are satisfied that all the requirements have been met," Robb said in a radio interview to ABC channel. "And we are in a position, if that's what comes about with the Prime Minister's visit, to sign such a cooperation agreement," he said. Australia holds about a third of the world's recoverable uranium resources, and exports nearly 7,000 tonnes a year. India is looking to nuclear power to supplement its existing options to fuel economic growth.

I am presently doing BSc (micro biology, biochemistry, zoology). I have a great interest in becoming a doctor. Can I do MBBS after doing BSc? — Ashfaque Ansari You will have to go through the 10+2 route followed by the performance in the medical entrance exams. If you are ready to invest another five and a half years – considering the fact this academic years process is on the verge of completion, then you can go ahead. Passionate about teaching, celebrating our gurus Continued from pg 13 «

the last three years, I have taught in three different colleges, in three different backgrounds. It has been enriching and has helped me grow in my profession. Constant interaction with students has helped me work in the right direction. I am currently working in an advertising agency and although teaching is not my bread and butter, it has helped me grow in my profession,” said Malik.

CHANGES

“In the five years after I started my career, there was a rapid increase in the use of technology. Nowadays, there is a growing dependence on use of smartphones for teaching too,” said Nauriyal. Malik said, “The method of teaching and interest in practical knowledge has changed over the years. Teachers are imparting field knowledge and students also want to know more about industry. There are a lot of questions being asked by students too. The education system has taken the wrong route by focussing on theoretical knowledge rather than practical knowledge. This should change.” Khanderia felt that since the beginning of her career, the attention span and the level of patience among students has reduced. “Students also prefer practical knowledge over theoretical,” said Khanderia.

LIKES AND DISLIKES

Nauriyal has liked teaching her students and enjoys interacting with them. “It’s good to be paid to speak about what you understand of the world. But there is a lack of seriousness among students. Students are more dishonest and manipulative nowadays and this trend is growing in time. The thirst for knowledge is less among those students who belong to the financially rich backgrounds, than those who belong to a financially poor background,” said Nauriyal. Malik said that he has no regrets in his profession at present. “Teaching gives me peace. It allows me to be more humane than I have ever been in my life. It has also given me a lot of knowledge that I couldn’t gain from my work in the industry,” he said. Khanderia said, “Teaching keeps me updated with the latest knowledge and technology, and also helps me interact with my students on a daily basis. But what I don’t like about teaching is that Mumbai University is giving more importance to theoretical knowledge over practical knowledge. This shouldn’t happen because teaching will then only give importance to theory.”

REVELATIONS

Speaking about the future and recommendations to others to join this profession, Nauriyal felt that the education system should encourage more professionalism in teaching. “It should focus more on proper

education and enlightenment for students. Less emphasis should be given on showcasing education, i.e big brands entering in education and imparting their knowledge to gain profits. As for those who want to join the profession, I would encourage them to do so, especially those who have been in the industry and can impart knowledge about their particular field of experience. Some should take a break from their professions after 10-15 years of field work and start teaching students,” said Nauriyal. Malik said, “In the future, I feel teachers are going to be young and street smart. There should be curriculum changes that allow creativity in subjects and practical knowledge is imparted. Also, digitisation of education should take place and we should do away with papers and educate our children with the help of computers. Yes, I would recommend others to start teaching, but only those who genuinely feel for the profession. Their answers to students' questions should be honest, factual and practical. They should also have confidence and justify the subject that they teach. Everyone can be a student but everyone cannot be a teacher.” Khanderia felt that technology will play an important role in future teaching and that traditional methods won’t be used for teaching. “Use of Wi-Fi and computers will play an important role in future teaching. I would definitely recommend others to teach but only those who are capable of doing so,” said Khanderia.

I am in FYJC Arts and I have decided to become a chemist. I think I need to change courses but I do not know what to do now since I have already taken admission in Arts. Please guide me about what I should do now? — Rituraj Gupta There are two entry routes to become a chemist. You either need to possess graduation or post graduation in organic chemistry and then gain experience from Chemical labs or related firms. This will get you the post of a chemist in any reputed organization. And the second route is by completing a two year diploma or a four year bachelor’s degree in pharmacy (if you want a license for opening a pharmacy). But to be eligible for either of the routes, you need to complete HSC in Science only. Hence, you will have drop out this year and reapply next year to a science college. I am interested in studying Economics in Canada. Which are some universities that I can look at? What are some of the benefits of studying in Canada? —Anuja There is a wide range of Universities in Canada that offer a great Economics program. Some of the most popular in Canada are McGill University, University of Toronto, University of British Columbia to name a few. Keep your school grades up and you could look at applying to one of these universities. Your school grades are what they will look closely at when considering your application.

The most obvious reason when considering Canada is that the tuition cost is about half of that of the US. Obtaining a visa is not as difficult as it is for the US and the UK. Make sure that you have all your documents in order before you go in for your visa interview. Canada is also very welcoming to international students. Consider getting a job and a work visa post your education as this is a viable option in Canada.

While Parsons is one of the best schools for the programme there are several art specific schools with a liberal arts programme that offer the course as well. Other colleges that offer a graphic design major that are not art specific will give you the leeway to take classes other than just art classes. Eco-friendly Ganesh idols at KIS ‘Y

ou must be the change you wish to see in the world’. Students of Kohinoor International School – Primary Section have imbibed this quote by Mahatma Gandhi and are doing their bit to be the change. As a part of their SUPW (Socially Useful Productive Work) activity, the students of KIS – Primary are spreading the message of celebrating Ganesh Chaturathi in an environmentally sustainable manner. Children of Class III, IV, and V had been enthusiastically working towards making eco friendly Ganesh idols out of clay, newspaper, empty boxes, etc since the past one month. These masterpieces, 25 in all, were

truly charismatic and captivated the attention of one and all. These handmade works of art were displayed at an exhibition cum sale. The students were eager to explain the entire process right from the making of the idols to the eco friendly immersion of the same. They had prepared various charts which gave details on the immersion processes of the clay and paper idols. Hand outs were given with each idol which mentioned the eco friendly immersion process step by step. India is a land of festivals, where one can experience the true meaning of ‘Unity in Diversity’. During these festivals people from all

walks of life come together and rejoice with great fervour. “It is our responsibility to celebrate every festival in an environmentally sustainable manner. This will go a long way in creating awareness amongst our children, the future citizens of the world,” said Deepali Nene, Principal – Kohinoor International School – Primary Section. Kohinoor Blossoms too had put up a vivid display of different Ganesh idols made of coconut, peanut, vegetables, leaves, etc. It was as if Ganapati Bappa himself was visiting his little devotees right here at Kohinoor International School.

did my engineering in electronics and communication, and then did MBA in marketing and finance. As a child I was inclined towards music, dance and fashion, where music was my first priority. I believe that it’s always better and important to work in a field you are passionate about, which might involve some risks, but it will always give you great results and, most importantly, satisfaction. I feel that being an artist is purely a gift from god which is not there with many. Art cannot be learnt. It can only be enhanced or polished. For instance, to grow a plant you need to sow the seed first, without which you cannot even think of seeing a healthy plant. So here this seed is our inborn talent given by the almighty and our practice, hard work with dedication is the water and nutrients supplied to get a well-nourished plant.

guru, Sanjay Bohra, which continued till the end of my schooling. Apart from this, I also learnt Kathak from Jaipur Gharana and did a diploma in the same. I also focused on light music under Rekha Bhatnagar. During my higher studies, I was exposed to Western music. I was selected as the lead vocalist of the band Dia Tribe. I also got an opportunity to continue my learning under Suresh Wadekar and Padma Wadekar. During my entire training period I participated in various light music and dance competitions and won many awards at competitions like Meri Awaaz Suno, Sangam Kala Group’s Music competition, Funkar and other inter-state competitions. I also got selected for reality shows like Indian Idol and India’s Got Talent. Today I am a singer, performer and an anchor/host, actor and fashion choreographer who owns a music company. As a professional singer my journey started with the romantic song ‘Niga Niga Thoorupe’ in the Telugu movie ‘Kamina’ (the Telugu remake of ‘Jonny Gaddar’). With that began my foray into playback singing where the next one was with none other than Sudesh Bhonsle for the Rajasthani movie, ‘Raju Rathore’. I have sung many bhajans and devotional songs too. Many songs are in the pipeline, like the Indo-Western fusion soft rock song named ‘Talaash Khud Ki’. The journey of a girl presented by my band

ART CANNOT BE LEARNT The turning point was when I got an offer from a leading music director of the South, Agastya Bonapalli, to sing a romantic song for his upcoming movie, ‘Kamina’ where I shared album space with Sunidhi Chauhan. This offer was given to me a year after he had heard me singing in a music competition where he was invited as a judge. Hence, I chose to pursue my music professionally, as there is nothing better than making your career, something you actually want to do. Believe me, a long-lasting effect never ends. Music or any form of art is something that gives you peace and motivates you to enjoy life. It acts as a morale booster. When I am singing or dancing or am involved in any activity related to it, there is some spark and energy originating from within that takes me to a different world altogether. Capturing the music and polishing it is a never-ending task which allows me to explore my potential and test it to its limits. Music makes you aware of your inner consciousness and brings you closer to yourself. To be very frank, I used to crib about my studies. But because of my attitude of gracefully completing any task that I have taken up, I managed to complete all of it with honours. Now when I am running my own music company, releasing albums, organising shows and managing my band – Rutbaa, I realise the effect of education on my life. Whatever marketing and finance I studied helps me while I implement things and make business decisions. I truly believe that education is a must and it helps you grow as a person, altogether broadening your outlook and thought process, making you a dynamic personality. My training in Indian classical music started from the age of seven under my

Rutbaa, a devotional album for this ‘navratra’ season which encapsulates a great variety of flavours from Punjabi ‘thappe’ to Rajasthani ‘ghoomer’, from ‘garba’ to Sufi music and others. As an actor I have been a part of series like ‘Savdhan India’ (Life Ok), and ‘Arjun’ (Star Plus). I have also worked on some short films, choreographed fashion shows for Shaynah by Rohan Rajiaah and have walked the ramp as the showstopper in ethnic wear. My music company Kamkahya music operates in various verticals – music production, performances and compositions by the band Rutbaa, and in event management. I also run an academy called Acoustica under which music training is provided (vocals and instrumental) and dance. Investment of time, effort and energy is one of the most crucial elements, sometimes even much more important than the financial aspect. To start with, my entire training period from childhood was the key investment as it strengthened my art giving it a structure and paving a path for my music career. Apart from this, there was a huge financial investment to set up the studio for sound production and processing. There are no limits in terms of earning. This field generally doesn’t work on a fixedsalary basis. The income here is mostly variable, depending on the quantity and quality of work you do. To become a professional it clearly depends on the expertise you gain, exposure and opportunities you get to showcase your work. Any art line needs a constant practice otherwise you lose the hold and command over your work, no matter how experienced you are.

JOY OF TEACHING

T

his quote lays tremendous responsibility on teachers to develop ethical and responsible global citizens. Not everyone is called to become a school teacher, but certainly everyone can become a teacher in their own way. Achievements of any individual are because of teachers. Some of them are formally appointed in school while others are the parents, friends and motivators. It is true that the home and parents play an important part, but since the child spends a good portion of its formative years in acquiring an education, school life and the school environment are critical factors, and school teachers play a pivotal role in shaping and moulding futures. Teaching is more than just a job. It’s a calling for divine work. Nobody can satisfy the amount of work done by good teachers. It will always be less in comparison to what they give to society. Only god can reward them richly. Committed teachers will always keep their enthusiasm going because they are fully aware of their calling and the joy they get is enough for everything else. Teaching is challenging, yet it is a totally beautiful vocation. It is the innocent enthusiasm of young children that keeps teachers going with a smile, even through the most frustrating moments. As a teacher, the greatest gift you bring to the classroom each day is your own unique personality coupled with your individual gifts to inspire, lead, and motivate students and make lasting impressions on

Dear teachers, No matter the challenges you face, your work truly has an encouraging effect on your students, their families, and their future. Henry Adams said, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.”

them. Good teachers enter the profession because they want to make a difference in the world and their communities. This is a noble purpose that a teacher should always keep in the forefront. Rewards of teaching are innumerable. You have the opportunity to be amid hundreds of young bubbling lives, touching their hearts and

minds. For many, their work is just a means to an end, but teaching is a vocation and not a job. It gives a sense of service. Teaching offers a great deal of variety where every teacher can experience the joy of making a difference in young lives. Senior teachers have seen the challenges and joys of teaching with generations passing through them. They have all loved knowing their students, helping discover their talents, celebrating their successes and watching them blossom. All this has given them a sense of satisfaction more than a paycheck ever could. While teachers spend time nurturing children, they also find personal fulfillment doing something they truly love and are passionate about. John Dewey has beautifully stated, “If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.” Teachers have to be lifelong learners who relish the chance to grow and evolve. Good teachers always ensure that they update their knowledge and are open to learning new things. They wish to grow and continue to make teaching meaningful and engaging. Teaching is a gratifying and a humbling experience. Teaching gives the opportunity to transform the future generations into intellectually and socially engaged citizens. This Teachers’ Day, I exhort every teacher to experience the joy of making a difference in society, the greatest gift of all. Dear teachers, give your best to each student and remember, “God is not unjust. He will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.”

COPING WITH COMPETITIVE EXAMS 19

Professor Shibu Nair, Director of the Carmel Educational Group, provides some tips that will help students and parents cope with exams like SSC, HSC and various other competitive, board and entrance exams By Abhishek Vissapragada

S

tudents often find it difficult to cope with their examinations, especially SSC, HSC and various competitive board and entrance examinations. They have certain fears about the results and expectations of their parents to fulfil. But Professor Shibu Nair, director of the Carmel Educational Group, has some tips that will help students cope with such examinations. He started his career in 1994 as an English lecturer at Thomas Baptista College in Vasai after completing his MA and BEd in Mumbai. Simultaneously, he started taking classes. Today he teaches atleast 3,000 students from various streams who come from the Borivili-Boisar belt. The Carmel Educational Group comprises 137 dedicated staff members and offers coaching for students in Classes 9 and 10, SSC, CBSE and HSC boards, arts, science and commerce streams as well as those preparing for entrance exams for medical and engineering at the state and national level, IIT, JEE, NEET and CA examinations. The institute also provides coaching for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) conducted by IDP Australia and the British Council. The Carmel classes are ISO 2001 and 2008 certified as well as TUV India certified. To cope with examinations, Nair feels that students should study regularly. “They should study consistently and read their textbooks rather than study from guide books of various authors. They should also present their answers clearly and to the point. A knowledgeable teacher should be able to help the students cope with their studies and guide them in understanding various subjects,” said Nair. Nair also feels that students must understand the core of the subjects to be able to answer related questions, “Otherwise, students won’t be able to understand the questions asked in the examinations. They can do so by solving questions of previous years’ examination papers which has repeated important questions of the subject. These important questions signify the core of the

subjects and that is the knowledge the students need to have.” “Students must study in a quiet environment. Such an environment will allow them to focus on their studies. If they study in a place where they are disturbed most of the time, they will focus on unnecessary things

<< Shibu Nair

and won't register anything they are reading,” said Nair. On parental support, Nair said, “Parents should not have big expectations from their children or set a particular target that should be achieved. They should support their children unconditionally. It’s important for them to communicate with their children to help them cope with their fears and assure them that whatever the result, they will always be with them.” “Students should focus more on studying than on scoring higher percentages than their colleagues and friends, or securing ranks. That will help in reducing the pressure, thereby create a relaxed environment to study. Students should be happy with whatever result they receive as it is not necessary that only top scorers have a better life. I have seen average scorers who live a rich and peaceful life in the future. For students of Classes 11 and 12, the subjects they select should be of their choice as it will ease their understanding and help them utilise the knowledge to their best abilities,” said Nair. Nair also feels that parents should allow their children to select a course of their liking. “It is not necessary for every student to become an engineer or a doctor. Students should be able to explore their talent in different fields of education and parents must encourage them to make their own choice. This will help children build on their talent, and therefore progress in their field of choice,” said Nair.

for Jains. It’s a good place to get your basic vegetarian food and it offers really good service. Try the Mediterranean pizza,Southwestern rolls and Caesar’s salad. Budget: Rs 850 for 2

I

bring to you options to dine in style, though in an economical and friendly manner. These meals will not make a hole in your pockets and, at the very same time, will satisfy your taste buds. Out of the multiple eateries in Mumbai I have handpicked the perfect balance options, keeping in mind food, price, location, ambience and quality. (Note: the following restaurants are ranked in random order.)

Kya Miyaa, Fort The name says it all. A Hyderabadi restaurant located opposite the very famous Vithal Bhel Puriwala. They have a variety to offer at quite reasonable prices. However, the restaurant is very small as their selling point is home delivery. You might be able to grab a seat and enjoy the Hyderabadi experience, and indulge in the authentic Hyderabadi biryani, gilati seekh, lassoni tikka and much more. Budget: Rs 600 for 2 Burma Burma, Fountain We're off to Myanmar this time. Authentic finger-licking, good vegetarian Burmese food is what you can expect from Burma Burma. The problem here is getting a table. However, that's not a problem if you make a reservation in advance. They also have a takeaway option. Burma Burma gives you a fine dining experience. If you make your way there, you must have the street noodles, khao swey. It is located at Fountain and is easily accessible from any side of the city. Budget: Rs 1000 for 2 China Gate, Andheri This Chinese buffet is larger than life. They offer an extensive range of starters, soups, main course and desserts, served with a complementary drink. China Gate is the perfect place to celebrate an occasion. You might want to walk in for lunch rather than dinner, as their dinner service is a little cramped. However, make sure you haven’t had any meal before this, as it will only leave you unsatisfied for not tasting all that it has to offer. Try the buffet. It's the only 'affordable' item on the menu. Budget: Rs 525 (including taxes ) for one

Hot Spot, Andheri (W) Authentic kebabs with a twist of their own, Hot Spot is a one-callaway option. A large variety of kebabs and rolls are served here. A must try is the chicken basil, chicken lemon and the tava pulao. You will definitely enjoy the food, even when it’s delivered. Budget: Rs 350 for 2

Lemon Leaf, Palli Hill This Thai spread is most-recommended. The food here is served in huge proportions. The place is crowded even on weekdays. I recommend this place for its desserts. My special favourite is the red velvet cake. You cannot leave without trying the crispy bassa in black bean sauce with spinach, Thai green curry and Thai grilled chicken. Budget: Rs 900 for 2

this restaurant will make you feel like you’re in Japan. This place may have exceptional service, however it doesn’t work too well on the pocket, from a pocket-friendly perspective that is. If you don’t usually treat your taste buds with exclusivity, you should try out AOI. What should be served on your platter must be understood from its different cuisines, so ask for recommendations. Try their Bombay rush, gunkan and spicy kimchi soup. Budget: Rs 1,300 for 2

Red Ninja Express, Khar When you crave for affordable Chinese, call the Red Ninja Express. In a way, I am very pleased with the customer service and the packaging of the takeaway. Since this is a takeaway restaurant, it’s a hustle-free process. You order, you eat and you discard, with not too much plastic wasted. The portions are big enough to satisfy your hunger. If you make your way there, you must have the tom yum soup, kakka spicy chicken, salt and pepper prawns. Budget: Rs 600 for 2 He Said She Said, Andheri (W) The perfect ambience with affordable food and a great buzz which is why this place is gaining a lot of recognition. This joint is famous among the youth. However, though this place is too small to accommodate big groups, it is the perfect place to visit on your first date. The must-haves include cha maila, grilled cajun chicken and cheesy nachos. Budget: Rs 600 for 2

Janta Lunch Home, Pali Hill Cheap alcohol + yummy food = satisfaction unleashed. Expect to wait for a table, round the clock. But the wait is totally worth it. This is a joint that will satisfy your hunger and leave you wanting to come back. It also serves the treasures of the seas on a platter. The food is tasty and definitely affordable. Quattro Ristorante, Lower Parel Budget: Rs 500 for 2 This place serves pure vegetarian food, derived from Italian and Mexican cuisine. A relief for vegetarAOI, Bandra Welcome to Japan! Each aspect of ian readers, they also have an option

During the games, Cassia blasts Corvus’s offer of marriage and is forcibly taken and locked in a room. While Milo and Atticus fight it out with the Roman guards in the arena, Mount Vesuvius erupts. Milo and his friend Atticus succeed to escape from the arena, but as the mountain erupts, it quickly destroys the city of Pompeii as well as its surrounding communities. POMPEII Rs. 599 Cast: Kit Harington, Carrie Anne Moss, Emily Browning, Adewale Akinnuoye – Agbaje, Jessica Lucas, Jared Harris, Kieffer Sutherland Director: Paul W S Anderson

T

HE historic story of the city of Pompeii is perfectly recreated to showcase the Roman city in its finest. The special effects and sound separation are incredible, while the opening scenes of the film showing the origins of the main male protagonist Milo are awesome and resemble the actual findings of the city thousands of years ago. The final scene of the erupting volcano and tsunami is marvelous. The costumes of the period are remarkable. If it’s Hollywood, the timeline here would be precise, but it’s not, so it’s slightly twisted, with a love angle, but still enjoyable. In 79 AD, a Celtic tribe of horsemen is slaughtered by the Roman Senator Corvus (Kieffer Sutherland), his right-hand man Proculus and their army. A little boy

OKYO: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday termed his Japan trip as 'very successful' and hoped that India's infrastructure will improve and the country will become clean with the help of US $35 billion promised by Japan over five years, the highest ever amount ever. Winding up his official programme on the penultimate day of his five-day visit, Modi expressed gratitude to Japan for reposing 'trust' in India and demonstrating its friendship with a quip “Yeh fevicol se bhi zyada mazboot jod hai (this bond is stronger than that of fevicol)". "This visit has been very successful," Modi said at the Indian community reception hosted in his honour here, reports PTI. "There has been talk about billions and millions. But there has never been talk of trillions," he said, referring to 3.5 trillion Yen ($35 billion or Rs.2,10,000 crore) promised by Japan to India through public and private funding over the five years for various works, including building of smart cities and cleanup of the Ganga river. "This is a big achievement. My biggest happiness is that Japan

trusted us," he said at his last official programme after a hectic day of events and meetings. Talking in the context of trust, he referred to Japan's decision yesterday to lift ban on six Indian entities, including HAL. The ban had been imposed in the aftermath of 1998 nuclear tests. Referring to signing of an MoU under which Varanasi will be cleaned up and developed learning from the experience of Japanese 'smart city' Kyoto, Modi said, "we can learn from each other". "I was born in Gujarat but these days I am at the service of Varanasi (in Uttar Pradesh). Kyoto is also a very small city and they have large number of temples like in Varanasi. But they have modernised while preserving heritage," the Prime Minister said. He noted that 17 structures in Kyoto were in the UNESCO World Heritage list, which was not a mean thing. Talking about his 'clean up' agenda, Modi said the issue was close to his heart as it would be a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, for whom cleanliness was the dearest thing.

PM Narendra Modi yesterday took a dig at his "secular friends" over his gifting a copy of the holy Hindu text 'Bhagavad Gita' to Japanese Emperor Akihito, saying they could kick up a storm and trigger TV debates back home. Modi had an audience with Emperor Akihito at the Imperial Palace here on the fourth day of his five-day visit to Japan to strengthen bilateral ties.

Gadkari, Azad trade charges on govt’s 100-day performance N

EW DELHI: The government and the opposition on Tuesday clashed on the first 100 days of the BJP-led government with Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari claiming achievements of the new regime and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad accusing the NDA of hijacking the UPA programmes. "The beginning of the government has been very good and satisfactory. We have been able to decrease the inflation. Growth rate has shown a remarkable increase from 4.5 per cent to 5.7 per cent. "Employment opportunities will increase once infrastructure grows and capital investment increases," Road Transport and Highways Minister Gadkari said while participating in a debate to mark the 100 days of the NDA government, arranged by 'Aaj Tak TV'. He said work was on to roll projects worth lakhs of crores of rupee stuck due to policies of the previous government and opening more than 1.5 crore bank accounts for the poor was one of the major achievements of the government as unfortunately despite 68 years of independence 60 per cent of population in India didn't have a bank account, reports PTI. Azad hit back saying that the NDA has done nothing new in the 100 days to claim credit for any-

Modi’s gifts Bhagavad Gita to Emperor

Addressing the members of the Indian community at a reception, Modi spoke of him carrying a copy of the Gita during the Japan visit for gifting it to the Emperor. "For gifting I brought a Gita. I do not know what will happen in India after this. There may be a TV debate on this. Our

thing, it has only repackaged UPA's schemes. "NDA has no parallel in re-naming and re-packaging our programmes. PM Modi was getting credit of UPA's works...In fact it can put to shame leading international advertising agencies when it comes to packaging... It will take more than five years for NDA ministers to inaugurate the projects launched by UPA," Azad said. Gadkari said: "It is the frustration, depression and shock of losing elections which is being reflected." Azad said virtually the NDA government was a "one man show" and its ministers had no say in any decision, including keeping personal staff. "None of the NDA ministers have the freedom to go for a foreign visit without PM's permission," he said. To this Gadkari said: "Some people do not like the face of PM Narendra Modi... They get sick on seeing him but it is a fact that he has been democratically elected with absolute majority and leading the nation on the path of development. We are happy in his Cabinet." "PM is the head of the government, it is his duty as well as prerogative to decide and evaluate the functioning of his ministers,” he said.

secular friends will create storm that what does Modi think of himself? He has taken a Gita with him that means he has made this one also communal," the Prime Minister said. Modi said he wondered why nowadays small things create controversies.

"I don't know why, but people create controversies even with such trivial things nowadays, but I have my own commitment and my own conviction that if I meet some great person of the world, I will give it (Gita) and that is why I brought it," he said. At this point he referred to his audience with the Emperor and presenting a copy of the Gita.

Cong against Sathasivam for Kerala guv post N EW DELHI: Slamming the move to appoint former Chief Justice of India P. Sathasivam as Kerala governor, Congress on Tuesday wondered whether the government was 'pleased' with his judgement in the Amit Shah case. "Why was he made? This raises a question if he has done some work, for which they are pleased. Prime Minister Modi is pleased, Amit Shah is pleased and that is why he is being honoured?," Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma told PTI. He was asked whether Sathasivam was being being given the gu-

bernatorial post for giving relief to the BJP President in a fake encounter case last year. Sathasivam was on the Supreme Court bench that scrapped a second FIR against Shah in the fake case, saying it was linked to the bigger Sohrabuddin Sheikh killing case. Noting that Sathasivam was the first former Chief Justice set to be appointed as Governor, Congress wanted to know from the government whether it was moving to a system where "we expect judiciary to be committed to government for political patronage post retirement".

Big beneficiary of domestic auto demand revival: Following two tough years for the domestic auto Industry, we expect a strong revival on the back of 1) overall macro economic recovery, 2) pause in diesel price hikes, 3) peaking out of interest rates and 4) strong latent demand. Lumax Auto Technologies (LATL) is a supplier of key components to the twowheeler and the passenger car industries. Its key customers include Bajaj Auto, Piaggio, Honda Motorcycles and Scooters, Maruti Suzuki, Toyota and Tata Motors. Strong tie-ups with these OEMs will entail large business opportunities in the next few years. Diversified product base: LATL, primarily, was in the business of automotive lighting systems which now accounts only 30% of its standalone revenues and 19% of consolidated revenues. The company has diversified into new product lines wherein it is now a market leader in manufacturing of parking brakes and gear shift levers with a 60% share. Also the company is a major supplier of chasis, exhaust systems and petrol tanks for two-wheelers. Further, LATL has now diversified into non-automotive segments such as infrastructural lighting. Technological tie-ups with global leaders: For its exhaust systems, the company has a tie-up with Cornaglia group of Italy which is a major supplier to Fiat. For its parking brakes and gear shift levers business, LATL through its subsidiary Lumax DK Auto Industries has formed a JV with M/s Mannoh Industrial Co Ltd, Japan to manufacture complete gear shift lever systems for Manual, AMT & CVT transmissions in India. These tie-ups ensure best of the technologies for LATL’s products. Strong financials and attractive valuations: In spite of weak environment for auto OEMs, LATL’s revenues stayed flattish in the past couple of years. While OPM weakened due to impact of operating deleverage, depreciation and interest costs related to new plants impacted net profit. However, with strong volume growth expectations in the next couple of years, we expect robust margin expansion. With comfortable D/E of 0.2x and robust RoCE of 17%+, we find the valuations attractive at 9x FY14 EPS of Rs22.2. Also the stock has to catch up in terms of valuations of its auto ancillary peers which have seen strong rally in the recent past.

Emkay calls a ‘Buy’ on Cipla CMP: Rs. 557

Target Rs. 671

Cipla launches first combination inhaler Serroflo (generic version of Advair MDI) in two European countries (Germany and Sweden). Although Germany and Sweden are small markets (~USD 40mn), overall addressable opportunity of generic Advair MDI is ~USD 800mn in Europe. Event increases confidence and visibility on subsequent launches in other markets like UK, France, Spain and Italy over the next 12 to 18 months. We believe growth trajectory ahead remains interesting and incremental launches pose upside risks to our numbers. We upgrade to BUY from Accumulate with TP of Rs 671 Cipla launches Generic Advair MDI in Europe (Germany and Sweden): Cipla has launched two strengths (25/125mg, 25/250mg) of Fluticasone/ Salmeterol combination inhaler, generic version of GSK’s Advair MDI (metered dose inhaler) in two European countries. This is the first combination inhaler launch by Cipla in European countries. According to company press release, Cipla will be launching the drug in other European countries over next 12-18 months. Although market size of Advair MDI in Germany and Sweden is small (~USD40mn), overall market for Advair MDI in Europe is ~USD800mn. The launch establishes Cipla as the front runner in combination MDIs as no other generic company has received approval in this category so far. According to Cipla management (based on 3QFY15 call) generic Advair MDI in Europe is likely to be a substitutable version. Strong boost to margins: Going forward we are expecting Cipla will be able to launch the drug in UK, which is the largest market of Advair MDI (~USD400mn) in Europe. As the product is likely to be a substitutable version of GSK’s Advair, ramp up of the product should happen very fast. Competition should also remain very limited as only Mylan seems to be the other company developing generic version of Advair MDI and is expecting approval in 1HCY15. With 50% generic penetration, 40% price erosion and 25% market share, we believe this can add ~USD120mn to Cipla’ topline in FY16E with very high margin (~50-60% EBITDA). As the inhaler opportunity starts unfolding company’s business outlook in regulated countries (Europe and US) now looks brighter. We believe, Cipla will be able to launch generic version of Symbicort MDI and Advair Diskus in US over the next 4-5 years. Apart from Inhalers in Europe, US sales of the company should also grow significantly over the next couple of years driven by niche launches like gBaraclude, gXopenex and gNasonex. Company will also benefit from operating leverage going forward (probably in FY16E) as the cost related to front end and restructuring have already been incurred. Valuation: We expect sales to grow at a CAGR of 20% over FY14-16E. EBITDA margin is expected to increase up to 24.5% in FY16E. We expect earnings to grow at a CAGR of 32% over FY14-16E. We recommend a BUY rating with a target price of Rs 671 (22x FY16E EPS of Rs 30.2).

Stalled Projects Worth $60Bn Can Be Revived

If done, GDP growth rate could potentially reach 8.5 9% in five years and the Sensex could potentially reach 45,000 by December 2016, believes global financial services major, Societe Generale By A Business Reporter

he government is expected to revive projects worth USD 60 billion, around 45 % of all the stalled projects, a move that could lead to a sustainable improvement in GDP and market rally, says a Societe Generale report. In its optimistic scenario - a much higher rate of

stalled project revival and faster than expected reform implementation - India’s GDP growth rate could potentially reach 8.5-9 % in five years and the Sensex could potentially reach 45,000 by December 2016, reports PTI. According to the global financial services major, concerns around the stalled projects have already peaked, indicating that the worst may be over. “Our base case scenario is that the government will be able to revive projects worth USD 60 billion,” the report said, adding that “this should lead to a sustainable improvement in GDP growth and corporate earnings and to a structural rally in the Sensex”. On the other hand, in a pessimistic scenario the GDP growth rate could stay close to current levels (around 5 - 5.5 %) over the next five years and the Sensex could potentially fall to 20,000 by

December 2016. The report further noted that if the government is able to revive the long-term investment cycle, the current bull run in Indian markets may well outlive the term of the current government in office (beyond 2019), and we can expect much higher GDP growth rates and Sensex targets. The report noted that the biggest concern for India is also its biggest opportunity. “We note that the biggest concern is about stalled projects which we identify as the biggest opportunity for the government to immediately kick start the investment cycle,” the report said. An analysis of all the projects announced since 2000 across India, where implementation has been stalled for various reasons shows that the total value of these projects stood at a staggering USD 134 billion, about 7 % of GDP.

60% Affluent Consumers Plan To Increase Discretionary Spending By A Business Reporter

M

ore than half of the affluent population of the country plans to set aside higher amounts for discretionary spending in 2015, according to a survey report released here yesterday. “As many as 60% of affluent consumers in the country plan to increase their discretionary spending in the coming year, second only to China,” a VISA survey conducted from September 2013 to December 2013 said. However, VISA did not disclose how many people were contacted for the survey. The study said that on an average, around nine among 10 affluent Indians set aside Rs 25,000 monthly for discretionary spending on dining, night-outs, holidays and purchasing designer goods. Among them, a whopping 92% spend on

fine dining, 80% spend on designer clothes, 79% spent on family holidays and 68% spend on jewellery, it said. Among the 60% who expect discretionary spending to increase, 49% are likely to increase the budget on family holidays while 45% intend to increase spending on fine dining. Commenting on the survey, VISA’s Global Head of Emerging Markets Digital and Group Country Manager for India and South Asia Uttam Nayak said, “The survey results show that affluent people continue to be optimistic about plans to spend more on discretionary items in the year ahead”. The survey reveals that seven out of ten expect to save more in 2015, which demonstrates a good balance between spending and a commitment to growing and maintaining their wealth.

Several Chief Ministers are also expected to participate in a conclave focusing on the States, while NAREDCO Chairman Navin Raheja and President Sunil Mantri will present the industry and home buyers’ perspective. The importance of the convention can gauged by the fact that apart from key ministers handling portfolios directly connected with realty, the secretaries of important departments like housing, finance, revenue, DoD and so on will deliberate on shaping up the policies, he said. Several corporate honchos from the construction and urban infrastructure industries, urban planners, top developers, private equity firms, housing finance companies and banks will also join to share their thoughts. The NAREDCO convention assumes significance in view of the fact that Venkaiah Naidu has promised to discuss with all stake holders on the policy to ensure Housing For All by 2022.

Dhoni surpasses Azhar in ODI wins as captain

BIRMINGHAM: Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the most successful Indian captain ever in the one-dayers after India's nine-wicket thrashing of England in the fourth ODI here. Tuesday's win at the Edgbaston was Dhoni's 91st ODI victory as skipper. He surpassed Mohammad Azharuddin's tally of 90 ODI victories as captain. Azharuddin took nine years between 1990 and 1999 and 174 matches to get to his mark while Dhoni did it in only seven years and 162 matches. 33-year-old Dhoni now has a realistic chance of becoming the first Indian to lead the country in 100 ODI victories. He has scored 8098 runs from 246 ODIs so far, averaging 53.27 with a career strike rate of

The Edgbaston win today was also India's eight straight ODI win in England, a successful run that started in the Champions Trophy last year. Dhoni's captaincy may have come under the scanner after the 1-3 Test debacle against the Alastair Cook-led side, but his batting form has been consistent. The wicketkeeper-batsman slammed four halfcenturies in the Test series and also struck a fine 52 at Cardiff in the second ODI. A man not known to chase numbers, Dhoni also registered another record as wicketkeeper in the third ODI on August 30.

Sachin Tendulkar’s autobiography set to release on Nov 6 N

EW DELHI: The much-awaited autobiography of batting icon Sachin Tendulkar will hit the stands on November 6 with a high-profile release of the book in his home city Mumbai. The book, titled 'Playing It My Way', will be published worldwide by Hodder and Stoughton and by Hachette India in the Indian subcontinent. The book has been co-authored by renowned cricket historian and media personality Boria Majumdar. "I knew that agreeing to write my story would need me to be completely honest, as that's the way I have always played the game. It would require talking about a number of aspects I have not shared in

public before," said Tendulkar in a press release issued by the publishers. "So here I am, at the end of my final innings, having taken that last walk back to the pavilion, ready to recount as many incidents as I can remember since first picking up a cricket bat as a child in Mumbai thirty-five years ago," Tendulkar added. "My autobiography will be available on Nov 6th... Excited," Tendulkar tweeted. The front cover of the book shows Tendulkar raising his bat while walking away from the field one last time after his knock of 74 against the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium on November 15.

Post split with Gopi, Saina looking forward to the Asian Games

IN HAPPIER TIMES... Saina Nehwal and coach Puella Gopichand posing for shutterbugs after she won the bronze during the London Olympics in 2012. She would be training with Vimal Kumar in order to boost her chances for the Asian Games.

N

EW DELHI: Olympic medallist Saina Nehwal has parted ways with long-time mentor Pullela Gopichand and will be training under former chief coach Vimal Kumar, a development which did not go down well with the national badminton coach, who preferred to remain tight-lipped. Saina has been struggling with her fitness and form for almost two years. She had though broken her 20-month long Super Series title drought, winning the Australian Open in June and also performed well at the Uber Cup in May. However, the Indian withdrew from her title defence of Commonwealth Games owing to fitness issues and also failed to win a medal at the World championship last week. With the Asian Games just a fortnight away, Saina decided to hone her skills with Vimal, whose tips had helped her immensely during her unbeaten run at the Uber Cup. The 24-year-old flew to Bangalore to train at the Prakash Padukone Academy for the next two weeks. "I wanted to train under Vimal sir ahead of the Asian Games as his advice helped me during the Uber Cup. Asian Games is a big tournament and I feel he can help me," the London Olympic bronze medallist said. "I reached Bangalore today and I will train under him for the next 15 days. I want to win a medal at the Asian Games and hope it helps me to do well there," she added. Gopichand was not amused by the decision and said he doesn't want to talk about the issue as the Asian Games is just round the corner. "Well, it has been ten years we worked together. Whatever has happened, I am not very ... I saw that report in the paper in the morning. Leave it at that,"

Gopichand told reporters in Hyderabad on Tuesday. "I don't want to comment on that issue because it is two weeks to go for the Asian Games. I think whereever you are training the last thing you want is your focus to be out. So leave it that, (lets) address it later," he said. Replying to repeated queries on the issue, Gopichand said he doesn't want to discuss the matter at the moment. Prakash Padukone

They surprised their rivals by taking the lead when Hansraj found the target from their second penalty corner in the 13th minute. HAZIABAD: Two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar said if the budding wrestlers are provided better facilities, especially in villages, India could end up winning more medals than China in top international events. "Had the government ever thought of promoting sport of wrestling in villages, India could have won more gold medals than that of China," said Sushil during the closing ceremony of 6th Baldev Dangal Mahotsav at the Sadarpur village. Sushil, who bagged a bronze in

2008 Beijing Olympics and a silver in 2012 London Games, said that the youngsters needed to be given more support and advanced training so that they could pursue the sport. "Several eligible young boys and girls who could have wrestled at the international levels are out in the cities in search of employment with meager salaries. But if the government can provide better training facilities, the young wrestling aspirants could fetch more accolades for India," said Sushil.

Serena, Pennetta set-up US Open quarter-final clash to make it her first quarter-final of this Grand Slam year

N

EW YORK: Five-time champion Serena Williams reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final of the year at the US Open on Monday, setting up a clash with Flavia Pennetta in a duel between the two oldest women left in the draw. World No 1 Williams, the two-time defending champion, eased past world number 50 Kaia Kanepi, 6-3, 6-3, for a fourth win over the Estonian. "It's my first quarter-final of the year at the Majors -- at last I did it," said the 32-year-old American, who had fallen in the fourth round in Australia, the third round at Wimbledon and suffered a second round French Open exit. "It was a tough match today. Kaia hits the ball very hard and moves the ball around really well. I wanted to stay relaxed and told myself that whatever happens, Serena, you're still in the doubles." Italian 11th seed Pennetta, also 32, reached her fifth quarter-final in New York with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Australian 29th seed Casey Dellacqua. Pennetta made the semi-finals in 2013, where she was defeated by Victoria Azarenka, but despite having a 5-0 losing record against Williams, she refuses to believe that the outcome of Wednesday's quarter-final is a foregone conclusion. "Of course, she's better than me, but I still believe I can beat her. If she doesn't have a good day I can do that," said Pennetta of an opponent who has dropped just 17 games in four rounds so far. "If I get in the court and just play and try not to take 6-Love 6-Love, I'm going to take 6-Love 6-Love." Today's other fourth round ties will see seventh-seeded Canadian Eugenie Bouchard take on Russian 17th seed Ekaterina Makarova and former world number one Azarenka, the runner-up to Williams in 2012 and 2013, play Serbian qualifier Aleksandra Krunic, ranked at 145. Bouchard, the 20-year-old Wimbledon runner-up, has made at least the semi-finals of all three majors so far this year and was a sec-

Makarova won the pair's only previous meeting at Washington in 2013. Krunic, 21, who is studying for an economics degree when she is not playing tennis, stunned third

seed and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova to reach her first major last-16. Victory over Azarenka would make her the first qualifier since Barbara Gerkin in 1981 to get to the US Open quarter-finals. Former world number one Azarenka is down at 17 in the world having endured an injury-hit season where

The Wimbledon champion looked headed for a short day's work when he raced through the first set in 25 minutes. But Kohlschreiber dug in, keeping his nose in front on serve and forcing Djokovic to fend off a set point in the 10th game of the second.

Jhulan rues lack of international calendar for women’s cricket K

OLKATA: Indian pace spearhead Jhulan Goswami rued that lack of an international calendar for women's cricket was affecting their performance and she urged the need to focus on World Cup in 2017. Indian women's cricket team played a Test after six years as they defeated the English team by six wickets in a one-off Test in England which was a saving grace for Indian cricket in England with the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led team losing the Test series 1-3. "As of now, we don't know when will be our next international commitment, we don't have an international calendar. It's really difficult at this level. We badly need international exposure," the lanky speedster lamented. The former India captain further said the priority should be to

she has struggled with a left foot injury, a problem which caused her to sit out the French Open. The quarter-finals in the bottom half of the draw take place on Tuesday and feature 17-year-old Belinda Bencic up against China's Peng Shuai while former world number one and 2009 runner-up Caroline Wozniacki faces Italy's Sara Errani.

Djokovic downs Kohlschreiber to reach final 16

Novak Djokovic didn't let Philipp Kohlschreiber stand in the way of another Grand Slam quarter-final berth yesterday, reaching the US Open last eight with a straight-sets win over the German. Serbia's world No 1 defeated Kohlschreiber 6-1 7-5 6-4 on another muggy day at Flushing Meadows, reaching the last eight at the US Open for the eighth straight year. It's his 22nd successive Grand

focus on theWorld Cup in three years time which would also be held in England. "We must pick a lot of about 25-30 players and give them at least 30-35

international experience before they play the World Cup," Jhulan said thanking the Board for organising preparatory camp before an international series but said it was not enough. "In England, we played with eight Test debutants, that's why our win was more satisfying than our 2006 win. At that time our side was more experienced with the likes of Anjum Chopra," the 31-year-old who was felicitated by the Cricket Association of Bengal with a gold chain and locket here this evening, said. "But this side is pretty raw. I led the bowling while (captain) Mithali led the batting. It was very important to beat England in England," Jhulan, who claimed five wickets and was involved in a crucial 45-run partnership with Niranjana Nagrajan for the seventh wicket, added.

Djokovic did so with a stinging forehand passing shot to end a rally that sent the Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd wild, then broke Kohlschreiber for a 6-5 lead. Serving for the set Djokovic saved another break point with an offspeed service winner and having wrapped up the second set he broke Kohlschreiber to open the third and marched home from there.

Mary joins fight against cancer, cardiac disease against women G

URGAON: Olympic medallist boxer Mary Kom joined hands with multi-super speciality hospital Artemis in the fight against cancer and cardiac diseases among women in the country and asked them to take care of their health. Mary Kom was present at the 'Women's cancer and cardiac awareness and screening camp' organised here by Artemis Hospital. The initiative aims at spreading awareness about these diseases

across the country, including the North East where these are highly prevalent. Expressing her appreciation on the initiative undertaken by Artemis Hospitals, Mary Kom said, "Women are the backbone of society; they play multiple roles every day, right from taking care of their families to supporting them emotionally and financially. In the whole cycle, they majorly forget to take care of themselves. Women should not forget that they are the creators, care takers, fighters and winners in every aspect of their lives. There is a great need for them to awaken themselves to this realization and look after themselves better.

ANGALORE: Laughing off questions on potential challengers, Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt turned on the charm offensive on his maiden trip to India, throwing humility out of the window to declare that his records are pretty much out of reach. Bolt will play a seven-a-side exhibition match against a team which will have some of India's top cricketers. The four-over match will be played with Team Bolt comprising his best friend Nugent Walker Junior and Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh among others. The rival team would be led by all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who will have his longtime friend and renowned pacer Zaheer Khan among others in the team. The faceoff is titled 'Bolt and Yuvi – Battle of the Legends'. The imposing sprinter, the first man to hold both the 100 metres and 200 metres world records, was at his wittiest best while facing the media at a promotional event here. Asked if his 100m record of 9.58sec would ever be broken, Bolt said with a straight face, "That's pretty much out of reach." Amid a round of applause and some laughter, the 'fastest man on earth' added that his rivals would have to work really hard to match his greatness. "As an athlete I have seen records come and go. They have always been broken but if you want to be as great as me, you have to work very hard. That's why my records will stand the time," he said. There was more to come when questions turned on whether he thought anybody among his contemporaries were good enough to beat him. "Nobody," said Bolt after

chuckling at the question itself. On a more serious note, he said "Track and field is a weird sport. It's all about focus and mental capacity. It's hard to pick any one person but my coach thinks Justin Gatlin is good. Tyson Gay, Yohan Blake, so many guys are coming up. But I am not going to let anybody beat me!" Cricket is his other passion but asked why he took up sprinting instead of the gentleman's game, Bolt said "blame it on my dad". "My father is a huge cricket fan...But when I got higher secondary, I had two options -- cricket or athletics. My dad said because of the system in Jamaica, it would be better to take up athletics. He said, you just have to run fast in athletics while it's tougher to get into the national (cricket) team."
