Two-legged robot can walk on grass

A two-legged robot that can keep its balance and walk in an outdoor field, full of lumps, bumps and uneven terrain, is three times more energy-efficient than any other human-sized bipedal robot, scientists say. Researchers at Oregon State University last week successfully field-tested for the first time the locomotion abilities of the two-legged robot with technology that they believe heralds the running robots of the future.

The test demonstrated that their 'ATRIAS' robot can move quite nicely, keep its balance and withstand mild blows from a bouncing rubber ball, while taking a walk on the grass, up and down hill, and over varying terrain at a normal walking speed of a little more than three miles per hour. As a bipedal robot that was biologically inspired to mimic the spring-legged action of animals, the researchers said this is the closest a machine has yet come to resembling human locomotion.

The human-sized robot had six electric motors powered by a lithium polymer battery about the size of a half-gallon of milk, which is substantially smaller than the power packs of some other mobile robots. This is made possible by the energy efficiency of its elastic leg design and the energy retention that's natural to animal movement. "Animals with legs sort of flow in the energy used, in which retained kinetic energy is just nudged by very efficient muscles and tendons to continue the

movement once it has begun," said Jonathan Hurst, an Oregon State associate professor of mechanical engineering, and director of the Dynamic Robotics Laboratory in the OSU College of Engineering. "That's part of what's unique about ATRIAS - not just that it can walk, and will eventually run - but that it's doing so with animal-inspired fluidity of motion that is so efficient," Hurst said. "This will ultimately allow a much wider range of robotic uses and potential than something which requires

larger amounts of energy," he said. In the tests, the robot was tethered to a safety harness on a supporting frame that rolled along with it - not to supply energy or aid in walking, but just to help catch it if it fell, which it did a couple times due to sensor glitches. "It already appears that ATRIAS is three times more energy-efficient than any other human-sized bipedal robot," said Christian Hubicki, an OSU postdoctoral scholar who is working with Hurst.

Samuels and Baby have their own dispute regarding the quality of the drugs supplied to her, the of-

ficer added. They have been identified as PI Jayendra Sawant of the Worli police station, API Jyotiba Mane of the crime branch, PSI Gautam Gaikwad of the Igatpuri police station in Nashik and police naik Pardhe of the special branch of the Mumbai police. Their names cropped up in both, Baby’s and constable Kalokhe’s interrogation. ONGRESS vice-president Rahul Gandhi is now in Vidarbha, a part of Maharashtra, where the maximum member of farmers committed suicide. The suicides occurred during the time when the Congress was in power. And most of them could have been prevented if the government had taken the required steps. The crop failure was not the major cases that drove farmers to commit suicide. It was mainly because the farmers were not able to pay bank loans and money taken from private moneylenders. The banks and the moneylenders held out threats that all the farmers belongings would be attached – including the house. The farmers families had nowhere to go. They were undergoing great mental stress. And they were faced with the question of honour. Desperate, the farmers thought the only way out was to end their lives. The government could have come to the rescue. It could have saved them. It could have written off the bank loans and saw to it that the moneylenders could extract from them only what was really due. The government, the Congress government, did nothing. And now a Congress leader is touring Vidarbha and promising to help farmers to get rid of their problems. The padyatra of Rahul Gandhi in Vidarbha is farcical. It has only a political purpose. Rahul Gandhi is trying to pose a challenge to the BJP. The walking may do some good to his health, but it can only be one more frustrating exercise in his life.

ITH the impending visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to China around the middle of next month being viewed through the prism of Indian diplomacy, the associated potential parleys doing the rounds in India’s government, in various Indian diplomatic missions around the world, and in several economic-industrial establishments of the country, are possibly deliberating about the Government of India’s intention of removing the needless hurdles in the way of effecting investments in India from certain Chinese companies. The two Asian neighbours, whose relationship has swung — and does so — akin to that of a pendulum, the reach of whose one limit has been rivalry and the other limit marked by fleeting explicit utterances – more particularly by the Chinese — of enduring friendship, seem to be progressing towards the next step, which could eclipse the essentially superficial verbal expressions of friendship, and begin to prepare the ground, for certain mutually expedient and tangible outcomes. Although the issues as regards India’s territorial integrity and its preparedness to meet any national security challenges by China — directly or obliquely — remains a paramount objective in Indian defence and diplomacy, the prospect of expediencies through enhanced economic relations seems to be tempering, to some extent, the more often than not domineering and confrontationist predisposition of China towards India. With India’s intention of a symbiotic economic relationship emanated meaningfully, China appears to be relatively more receptive for an appropriate response, in kind, to the Indian initiative.

The Indian decision to implement necessary steps, which would ease the way for the effective implementation of Chinese investments, is also an outcome of the necessity to make India’s economic situation more expedient for investors, both at home and from abroad, while strengthening the checks and balances to prevent allegations of unfairness from those employed in the respective enterprises, and to hinder any sharp practices which could be inimical to India’s national in-

HE water of the spring is most healing and most inspiring because it comes from above and falls on to the earth; that is the character of the inspirational mind. The heart, like a spring, pours out water in the form of inspiration – be it in poetry, be it in music, in whatever form – has beauty, it has a healing quality, it can take away all the worries, anxieties, difficulties and troubles of those who come to it. Like the water of the spring it not only inspires but it heals. The water that rises from the sea towards the sky in the form of vapour represents the aspiration of the heart. The heart that aspires upward, that wishes to reach upward, that heart shows the quality of vapour. Indian exports to China are characterized principally of more raw materials and less of finished products. Chinese goods available in Indian markets are mostly in the form of electronics, machinery, and chemicals, among other consumer products. Additionally, the quality of those goods is often not to the satisfaction of Indian consumers; it gives rise to the saying that the Indian market is being looked upon by some Chinese producers as an easy dumping destination. Carving out a suitable niche in the Chinese market for Indian finished products, subsequent Indian investments in China and, satisfactory Chinese investments in India could qualitatively improve the flow of trade between the two countries, and also pave the way for more mutual satisfaction. The Sino-Indian relationship is fraught with immense challenges and encouraging opportunities. China’s predilection is to view India in a relegated position relative to itself. India is committed to ward off Chinese dominance and blandishments. If China proceeds to encircle India through engagements with other countries in the Asian region, India must do the needful to dilute the disadvantageous nature of such pacts through adequate diplomatic rejoinders and by forming its own alliances with other countries. If economic ties with China are enhanced in a well-calibrated and cautioned manner by India, it would increase the stakes for improvement of mutual relations and could consequently temper the perennial hostility witnessed in Sino-Indian relations by creating more avenues for cooperation than there are, at present.

India’s current ‘Trade Balance’ with China is negative. It registers around US $37.8 billion trade deficit with China. MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MAY 1, 2015

Delicious, light, ice-cold and refreshing, a sorbet is the perfect summer treat! Dev Goswami & Sara Shah explain everything you need to know about this icy delight, bring you a few recipes and also tell you where you can get your hands on a sorbet in the city >> Sorbets make The hisTory of sorbeTs

Tracing the history of any type of food is difficult. But, it is particularly hard when it comes to sorbets, thanks to the fact that their origin is intermingled with that of ice cream, which may be similar, but has striking differences — see our box on sorbets vs. ice cream for more about that. The history of ice cream itself includes several half-truths and myths and chronicling the history of the sorbet is no different. Popular beliefs (which most historians consider to be myths) include a story where Roman emperor Nero maintained a line of runners who brought him ice from Italy’s mountains and the story that Catherine de Medici brought sorbets to France when she married the Duke of Orleans (the future King Henri II of France) in 1533. Another story suggests that it was Marco Polo who discovered sorbets in China during his world travels, and brought his love of them back to Europe. However, historians doubt that the merchant traveller ever even visited China. What is widely known, however, is that by the 17th century, European nobility, especially those in France, England and Italy, were particularly fond of sorbets. Most noble families even had expensive underground ice houses built to store the ice, which was then flavoured and served at dinner parties. Sorbet as we know it today, probably came about thanks to Agnes Berta Marshall, an English culinary entrepreneur, who wrote numerous cookbooks. One of her recipes, Cornets with Cream, is believed to be the first published version of the recipe for an ice cream cone. In fact, her work with ice cream and frozen desserts led to her being labelled the Queen of Ices and she has been honoured on the menu of Fat Duck, Heston Blumenthal’s Michelin 3-star restaurant in the UK. Sorbets are now extremely popular and this simple dish is the mark of a chef’s ability. Don’t get us wrong; many chefs will tell you that making a sorbet is as easy as making an ice cream — and they aren’t wrong. However, achieving the correct consistency and maintaining the balance of flavour that is the mark of the perfect sorbet is difficult. The reason that making a sorbet isn’t taken as seriously is because an average or bad sorbet is also... well, pretty good!

WhaT makes a good sorbeT We aren’t going to be food snobs and tell you how a good sorbet should taste — we’ll let your tastebuds be the best judge of that. However, this guide will help you to understand the culinary process behind creating sorbets in order to help you to make the perfect one. It goes without saying that a sorbet is something that only those who have an experience in the kitchen can attempt. But, wait! It only contains sugar, water and flavour. So, what makes it so difficult to create?

The raTio This is the Holy Grail of making the perfect sorbet. The ratio of sugar and water will make or break your sorbet — literally! Too little sugar means that your sorbet will not hold, since the sugar is what gives the sweet treat its texture and helps it hold its shape. Dairy fat does the same job for ice cream. On the other hand, if there is too much sugar, the sorbet will resemble a big bar of flavoured ice — of course, you can call it an ice lollipop and salvage the situation! continued on pg 10 «

for the perfect summer treat

Chefs speak “Use fresh fruit juices or fruit pulp to make great sorbets. You can break the sweetness with a pinch of salt. If you don’t have an ice cream churner, don’t worry! Just chill the sorbet mix till it’s almost frozen, then blend it. Freeze this blended slush to prepare your sorbet.” — Saransh Goila, celebrity chef “Roasting or grilling fruit can bring out a wonderful, caramelised flavour. So, cook your fruits a before puréeing them for the sorbet. Don’t try to minimise the sugar content in your sorbet. Apart from adding a sweet taste, sugar gives sorbets the perfect consistency and shape, but it’s important to use the right amount of sugar. If your sorbet doesn’t turn out right, let it melt. You can then fix the proportions and churn it again as the base of the sorbet is very forgiving. Melting the sorbet in a small saucepan will allow you to warm it up enough to dissolve extra sugar or preserves, if the finished product was too icy.” — Ranjit Surve, in-house chef at Pause Wines “Sorbets are perfect when you’re looking for a light, refreshing way to end a summer meal. The

>> Chefs tell us why they like sorbets

recipe includes common ingredients such as lemon, sugar and ice shavings, and the best sorbets have a very simple approach. However, you can add an interesting twist to them by picking the right flavours and adding in citrus fruit pulps that have a tart flavour. Pay special attention to how ripe the fruit is, as the first rule

of making the perfect sorbet is choosing the right type of fruit. You can also add a dash of alcohol, since it gives sorbets a smoother, less grainy texture, ensuring that your sorbet won’t turn into a chunk of fruit-flavoured ice.” — Sachin Mylavarapu, food & beverage director, The Westin Mumbai Garden City

Sorbet reciPeS

hoW Much iS too Much? Unfortunately, there is no standard measure for too much or too little sugar. The amount of sugar that you will need depends on the fruit that you’re using. You will have to account for the sugar content in the fruit and so, the amount of sugar you use will depend on the sorbet that you’re attempting to make. Having said that, four parts fruit purée to one part sugar is usually a good ratio to aim for — you may not always get the perfect sorbet, but it won’t fall apart.

Think serving sorbets at your next house party is a good idea? These recipes will help you out n Make a light sugar syrup by mixing sugar with coconut water and

cooking it on a low flame for three minutes.

n Pour the strained lychee pulp into a large bowl and whisk in the

coconut sugar syrup until it is well-mixed, then whisk in rose water, rose syrup and salt. n Chill this pulp in the refrigerator until very cold and almost frozen. n Blend it with a blender to give it a slushy feel or if you have an ice cream maker, churn this mix in the ice cream maker for 10-15 minutes. n Transfer to an airtight container and chill in the freezer for at least four hours before serving.

the fruit Considering that a sorbet highlights a single flavour, you need to be certain that the fruit you’re using is full of flavour. Always use a seasonal fruit and pick the freshest of the lot in order to ensure the best flavour.

ManGo & coriander Sorbet

freSh flaVourS We aren’t talking about fresh fruit any more. We’re talking about the flavour. Sorbets usually taste great, no matter what flavour you pick. And, though we agree (and love chocolate sorbets!), refreshing flavours such as lime, watermelon, raspberry and strawberry lend themselves particularly well to the sweet treat. It’s not a coincidence that tart flavours form a majority of that list — tangy, crushed ice is a simple, but delicious pleasure.

KiWi Sorbet

Recipe by: Ranjit Surve Ingredients: 10 kiwis, 1 cup water, ¾ cup sugar, 2 tbsps dessert wine (Ranjit prefers Pause Indian Nectar), 1 tsp fresh lemon juice Method n Mix water and sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil until all the sugar is dissolved. n Lower the heat and let it simmer until the water reduces slightly. Turn off the heat, cover it and let it cool down to room temperature. n Peel the kiwis and cut each one in half. Use a blender or food processor to purée the fruit until it’s smooth. n Combine the kiwi purée with the cooled syrup, a dash of desert wine and lemon juice. Pour into an ice cream maker and blend. n Stick it into a freezer and serve after an hour.

Recipe by: Saransh Goila Ingredients: 4 cups mango pulp, ½ cup sugar, ½ cup water, ½ tsp salt, 2 tsp ginger juice, 2 tsp lemon juice, 2 tsp coriander leaves Method n Make sure that the mango pulp is smooth. Strain it if you need to. n Make a light sugar syrup by mixing sugar with water and cooking it on a low flame for three to four minutes. n Pour the strained pulp into a large bowl and whisk in the sugar syrup until it is mixed well. Whisk in ginger juice, lime juice, coriander and salt. n Chill this pulp in refrigerator for two to three hours or until it’s cold. Churn the mixture in an ice cream maker for 10-15 minutes, then transfer it to an airtight container and let it chill in the freezer for at least four hours before serving.

lychee & roSe Sorbet

Recipe by: Saransh Goila Ingredients: 5 cups lychees (cleaned and deseeded), ½ cup sugar , 1 cup coconut water , 6-7 drops rose water, 1 ½ tbsp rose syrup Method n Blend the lychees and strain them to get a smooth pulp.

fun factS n Sorbets were one of the most popular frozen desserts

in Renaissance Europe and are believed to have been created by Roman and Persian inventors during the 1st century BC. n Sorbets were once an expensive and royal dessert, meant only for nobles in Europe. n You may reach for a tub of sorbet in your freezer when you’re hungry, but it’s actually just sugar, water

and pulped fruits, so it’s devoid of any nourishment. n Sorbets began to be easily available only in the 1920s and 1930s, after modern refrigeration techniques came into existence. n Out of all the frozen desserts, sorbets are considered the healthiest, but only when they’re eaten in small amounts. Remember that because they do after all, contain a lot of sugar.

Sorbet VS ice creaM Several people use the terms ice cream and sorbets interchangeably, thinking that both of them are the same thing. However, the difference (although subtle), is important and quite apparent in the names itself. Ice cream, as the name suggests, includes cream (milk), while sorbets are made of just two ingredients — sweetened water and a flavour, which is then iced. Remember those roadside vendors that pop up this time of the year offering crushed iced golas? Well, that’s pretty similar to a sorbet. But, while golas tend to have a lot of bite to them, a perfectly made sorbet is unbelievably smooth. Not creamy (that’s ice cream), but smooth.

Hari has exhibited his photography prints during several group shows at NCPA, Hacienda Art Gallery, Nehru Centre, Jehangir Art Gallery, Tangent Art Gallery, Kitab Mahal, Point of View, Canon Image Lounge and Gallery BMB. He has also had two solo shows, which were held at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai and the Fine Arts Gallery, Kolkata. Hari tells us, “This show evokes gravity and also levity, which is humour that lurks in the nitty-grittiness of mundane life as much as gravity. It is this balance between gravity and levity that is sought to be presented in my testament to whimsy.” The exhibition of

photographs appears to be about balance, but Hari is actually challenging the concept of gravity. While explaining the exhibition title, Hari tells us, “What equilibrium means to me is less important than what it connotes to the viewer analysing my photographs. One can look at these as a light-hearted quest for possibilities that abound in nature, in chaos and in things lying all around. So, where someone might see a serpent, another might see the God of good beginning a game of chance. home Fashion

Done Right Fashionable home décor is just a click away, now that Fashionara.com, which is known for its clothing, has launched a home décor section. Sara Shah tells you more

W

e’re big fans of Fashionara.com. It’s one of our guilty indulgences — we skim through it for ‘work’ and then hit the checkout button, because, well, it’s one of the best websites to get your fashion fix. But, if we wanted a few knick-knacks for our home, we would have had to look elsewhere. All that is about to change now, as the website recently launched a separate section dedicated to home décor. And we must say, we’re really impressed! The only way to describe Fashionara.com’s new venture is that it is simplicity at its best. You won’t find too many highend products — nothing too fancy or remotely difficult to decipher. Everything is simple and easy to understand. The Home Fashion link is placed at the top of the website, alongside all their other sections. It offers a range of collections, which span across seven categories, namely bed and bath, living, kitchen and dining, décor, study, this and that and f.lea bazaar. The section house a total of 36 different home décor brands and features over 7,500 home décor products. Now, while all the other sub-sections offer the usual items you’d find in a home décor store, what piqued my interest

were their ‘this n that’ and ‘f.lea bazaar’ sub-sections. The former offers little knick-knacks, home improvement items, bean bags and other items such as mosquito coil holders, keychains, hooks, locks, stools, trinket boxes and stands for incense sticks. The latter is pretty amazing — it features items from flea markets across the country. Here, you can buy anything from superhero-themed cushions to fun alcohol and bar accessories. My favourite item from this section was a tap bottle stopper (`350), a unique bottle stopper with a decorative brass tap. Quite cute, don’t you think? While the section’s design was pleasant enough to browse through, the reason I liked their home fashion section was the variety of products on offer. There is plenty to choose from and you are bound to be spoilt for choice. Most items available here are also quite affordable — prices start from as low as `100 and go up to `7,499. I was quite impressed and I’m pretty sure that anyone who is looking for a good range of home décor options at affordable prices will be as well. Log on and see for yourself!

ocated in a lane opposite the domestic airport is fashion designer Anjali Jani’s flagship store. The central location helps the store get more footfall, and Anjali tells us, “Thankfully, the building belongs to my family. So, I was fortunate enough to be able to use it for my store.” Anjali graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, with an Associate of Arts degree in fashion design. She has worked under designers such as Rocky S and Manish Malhotra. So, I was really looking forward to checking out her work. The dominant use of wood in the décor is apparent as soon as you enter the store. It adds a subtle touch of class to the overall look of the space. Anjali has also used texture to her advantage, splashing it across the walls to bring in a trendy vibe. All in all, the large space (2,000 square feet) left me pretty impressed. The Anjali Jani store specifically houses womenswear collections featuring lehengas, jumpsuits, jackets, shoes, clutches and jewellery. What caught my eye was the extensive use of Indian textiles including handloom fabrics, cottons, chanderis and tussars and dupeon silks.

>> Beautiful traditional ensembles like the Anjali Jani Store She enhances these outfits with block and ajrak prints and by using mirrors, threadwork and zari. The current range at the store is part of her new collection inspired by Rann Utsav — the Rann of Kutch festival. So, needless to say, the collection was pretty colourful! Anjali explained that she draws inspiration from her love of all things classic — things that don’t date. Her garments reflect Indian textiles and embroideries that have stood the test of time and represent eternal beauty. Anjali does want to expand her collection and make her store a one-stop shop for menswear, lifestyle accessories, women’s accessories and jewellery. But, for now, she is focusing on her illustrious womenswear collection, and she does it well! Her collection is reasonably priced from `15,000 onwards, but it’s mainly targeted at people who are looking for bridal wear. So, if your aim is to buy something ethnic for a casual function, this store may not be the right destination for you. But, if a family wedding is on the cards, then we suggest you check out this collection. Where The Anjali Jani Store, Mani Villa, Nehru Road, Opposite Dena Bank, Vile Parle (e) Contact 26172573

A SundAy At

blueFROG one of mumbai’s best live music clubs, blueFrog recently revamped its food and beverage menu. Dev goswami headed over on a sweltering, but relaxing weekend to try their sunday brunch. He tells you what’s good

T

he faint murmur of people huddled in the trademark blueFROG pods; cheery staff moving around, relaxed on what is almost like a day off compared to weekend nights, when a 400-strong crowd usually throngs the place; a guitarist crooning on stage, playing oldschool hits; and hurried activity in the live kitchen as chefs quickly plate up breakfast and main course items... This is the perfect Sunday brunch scene to me, so walking into the vinyl-covered reception at blueFROG helped start the day pretty perfectly. blueFROG has been a name associated with good food and really good performances. While they have always been known for their excellent music, they’ve branched out and started a monthly, Theatre at the FROG event, which is something that I’m quite excited about. I visited on a Sunday afternoon, braving the heat for what I was hoping would be a few relaxing hours spent eating good food in the cosy lounge. Their Sunday brunch includes a range of tapas, arranged neatly on a buffet table in front of the live kitchen, which dishes out eggs (you can ask for any style you want) and main course dishes. They also have a selection of cocktails that you can choose from, but almost the entire list features vodka-based concoctions, which is disappointing. Thankfully, they do accept requests to replace the vodka with white rum. They have around 20 assorted tapas, offering a mix of vegetarian and nonvegetarian options, but I wasn’t too impressed by their selections — and their starters used to be the star of their brunch! Most of the tapas fell below par for me, and the vegetarian selection was much better than the non-vegetarian. Most of the dishes, including the roasted baby potatoes and harissa chicken, suffered due to an imbalance of spices. Others, such as the slow-roasted beetroot salad and the teriyaki beef, strong, Oriental flavour that reminded weren’t cooked well — though in the me of Thai green curry. your steak or it will be served done to death. The grilled tiger prawns really won us over though. The subtle flavour of raw mango salsa with the wellcooked, juicy prawns was a heavenly combination. Their desserts were good but not extraordinary — although the Basil Crème Brulee was delicious. It failed as a crème brulee, but was so delicious, we’d forgive the slight texture issue. Their cocktails didn’t stand out either. The Indian Summer, impressed me with its aamras-like flavour and was the best drink of the day. All the other drinks (Get Fresh, Aniseed Martini and Californian Blanc) however, could have been mixed better. Most were a little too potent, with the alcohol overpowering the refreshing flavour that they should have had. Would I go back for the Sunday brunch? Definitely! Their main course dishes were a big hit, but I’m hoping for better cocktails and tapas next time around. Even though there are a few negatives, the entire experience makes for a relaxing, delicious Sunday afternoon. Their revamped menu is promising and I have no trouble believing that it will be a hit, as soon as they iron out a few creases. Check it out! ow would you feel if you could get food prepared by acclaimed chefs and delivered right to your doorstep, in just a few simple steps? It’s a tempting prospect, isn’t it? This is what Holachef.com offers, and after a successful run in Powai, the website is offering its services to the rest of the city. Holachef.com has different lunch and dinner menus every day. So, the website offers a variety of options to choose from. Browsing through it is almost like browsing through a shopping website. Choose your dishes, add them to your cart, apply a coupon code (if any) and place your order. You can pay by credit or debit card and they also have a cash on delivery option. You can choose a time slot for delivery according to your preference. Convenient, right?! As soon as I logged on, I was spoilt for choice, because their menu is pretty varied, offering appetisers, beverages, main course dishes and desserts. Moreover, it’s not restricted to one cuisine — you can pick from several including Italian, Mughlai and Thai. My roommates and I decided to order the Mutton Roghan Josh with Saffron Rice & Raita (`350), Chicken Roulade with Balsamic Veg and Dinner rolls (`300), Veg Chettinad with Neer Dosa, Tamarind Rice & Tomato Rasam (`150), Shahi Kaju Paneer with Palak Puris (`250), 250ml of Masala Butter Milk (`40) and a Walnut Brownie (`75) for dessert. Six dishes for `1,065 — that’s pretty reasonable! Unfortunately, we were left disappointed after actually tasting the food. The mutton was delicious, but it didn’t taste like a Mutton Roghan Josh. The Chicken Roulade got a mixed response — two of us absolutely loved the tender chicken, but one found it too salty. I am not a big fan of paneer, but the Shahi Paneer was a favourite — the paneer was super soft and the palak puris went perfectly well with it. But, the puris were soaked in so much oil that we had to dab them with a tissue before eating them! The Veg Chettinad was the biggest disappointment of our evening, because it tasted nothing like the authentic chettinad curry and even the tamarind rice didn’t win us over. We were looking for an authentic dish, and it failed to impress my room-mate, who is from Andhra Pradesh. However, the buttermilk and brownie were pretty great. The brownie was light and soft — exactly the way it should be! When it comes to packaging, Holachef.com gets a perfect score. Everything was neatly packed in containers and carefully stored. Every dish had the chef’s name written on it and came with tissues, plastic spoons and straws. I was not really satisfied with my experience because in the end, taste matters, and this is where Holachef failed to deliver. However, it does offer reasonably good food at affordable prices. So, you can give Holachef.com a try and maybe steer clear of the dishes that we ordered to see if you get a better deal. Where www.holachef.com

n this week’s release, Gabbar Is Back, there is a line, “Naam villain ka, kaam hero ka,” which is as big a tribute as any to the most memorable villain of Hindi cinema; nearly forty years after the original Gabbar Singh gave millions of viewers the creeps, a film hero goes by the villain’s name. Interestingly, the film is a remake of the Tamil film Ramana (by AR Murgadoss), which was remade in other languages with titles like Tagore, Vishnu Sena and Tiger. In the Hindi version, the anticorruption vigilante protagonist goes by the name that is associated with that of a villain. Anyone who has not seen (or at least heard of) Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay (1975) would have been living under a rock

Evil Incarnate for 40 years— the film’s dialogue (by Salim-Javed) has passed into common usage, and some of the best lines were written for Gabbar Singh, played by Amjad Khan. Sippy had offered the role to Danny Denzongpa, who turned it down, so a new actor (son of actor Jayant) was signed up and became a star. Till then dacoits in Hindi

films wore dhotis and lived in the Chambal ravines. Gabbar wore army fatigues with a bandolier, his teeth were tobacco stained, his eyes dripped amusement and evil in equal measure. He spoke with a peculiar lift and had a laugh that could make the blood freeze. He was the kind of sadist who would wipe out an entire family, including women and chil-

dren, would chop off his enemy’s hands, shoot down his own men when they failed in their mission and make a woman dance on pieces of glass. His hideout was the rockstrewn fictional Ramgarh village, he was given no back story and there was no explanation for his cruelty. No Indian film villain till then had been so gleefully, unapologetically vile. Amjad Khan’s Gabbar was inspired somewhat by Jabbar, played by Vinod Khanna in Raj Khosla’s Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971), but so unique was Gabbar that when Amitabh Bachchan tried to get into his shoes in Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag (2007), an ill-advised remake of Sholay, he failed to recreate the Gabbar effect. Ironically, Gabbar Singh became the film’s most popular character— even today, his lines are repeated in a kind of ongoing homage: Kitne aadmi the; Ab tere kya hoga Kaliya; Arey O Samba; Bahut yaarana lagta hai; Joh darr gaya ... samjho marr gaya and the one that best defines Gabbar’s arrogance Yahan se pachas pachas kos door gaon mein, jab bachcha raat ko rota hai, to maa kehti hai bete so ja ... so ja nahi to Gabbar Singh aa jayega. Can a hero ever beat that?

eeping the Nepal quake victims in his prayers, megastar Amitabh Bachchan remembered his first trip to the Himalayan country in 1954, which was also his maiden visit to a foreign nation. The 72-yearold actor said during his growing years, Nepal was a dream geographical location and even though it was a foreign land, it had “several universal qualities with India”.

“I visited Nepal in 1954. We were still living in Allahabad... Babuji had desired a meeting with some of his very close literary contemporaries. We flew from Patna airport to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, in a twin engined propeller Dakota aircraft, that warhorse of the World War 2 era, and perhaps those that have interest in aeronautics, the most sturdy and long lasting aircraft to date,” Bachchan recalled in his blog. “It was my very first experience on a plane, and of course my very first visit to a foreign country. The excitement generated was beyond compare. I was in some very superior space during those times, my worth and value among my friends reaching its peak,” he added. Bachchan later returned to the country on several occasions mostly for film shoots and he said there was a massive change in Nepal in terms of development and landscape but the love for Indian films remained.

Mahesh Bhatt refuses to blame distributor for ‘Mr X’ failure F ilmmaker Mahesh Bhatt says he will not blame the Fox Star Studio, the distributor of Emraan Hashmi-starrer ‘Mr X’, for the the film’s poor performance at the box office. The 3D sci-fi thriller was produced byVishesh Films, which is a company co-owned by Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt. “I will not pass the buck to the Fox marketing team. It’s time we at Vishesh bravely take the debacle of ‘Mr X’ in our stride and move on!” Bhatt, 66, posted on twitter. “BLAME ME: It is content and content alone which is responsible for a film’s failure.

ollywood actress and former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen has once again made her father proud and this time by acting in a Bengali film. “It was my father’s big dream that I do a Bengali film. It is a big moment for him,” Sen, whose debut Bengali film ‘Nirbaak’ (Speechless) releases this Friday, said. The 39-year-old actress, who has starred in Hindi films like ‘No Problem’, ‘Main Hoon Na’ and ‘Biwi No 1’, said her father Shuber Sen always wanted her to act in Bengali films, something which never worked out for her. “He was very ecstatic when he heard that. He had watched Srijit’s films before and said he is a fantastic director and you must do his film,” she said. Although born to Bengali parents in Hyderabad, the actress was worried about her command over the language while dubbing for the film directed by Srijit Mukherji. “I was scared whether I would be able to express myself in Bengali. The director made me do the dubbing like I was a child doing poetry recitation. He said every word has to be said exactly like a true Bengali,” she said. Two-three years ago, she was in talks with the late maverick Bengali film director Rituparno Ghosh for a Bengali movie. “We were discussing a film but he left us before that happened. That was a film I would have done for sure. I will regret that. As a human being and as a director, both, he was honest, my kind of a person,” the actress said. She is now discussing a project with another Bengali filmmaker Anjan Dutt.

‘Mr X’ bombed at the box office because of my content,” he said. ‘Mr X’, also starring Amyra Dastur, revolved around a man who gains the power of invisibility, and becomes a vigilante to take revenge on those who have wronged him. The film was released in both 2D and 3D on April 17. Actress-turned-director Pooja Bhatt lauded her father’s candidness. “That is why you are you and the rest of the industry is well, them! Salutations Mr Bhatt! You make me proud yet again!” Pooja tweeted.

Moushumi exercises caution over B-Town roles M

oushumi Chatterjee has kept away from Bollywood for quite some time and the yesteryear actress has attributed her previous bad experiences in the Hindi film industry to her absence. The 62-year-old actress, whose last Bollywood film was ‘Zindaggi Rocks’ in 2006, said there have been several occasions in the past where she has been duped by filmmakers and that has made her wary of doing films in BTown. “There are so my people who enter the film industry and they just make proposals but not complete it. I have been witness to all that. Sometimes people tell you it is a fantastic role but while shooting it becomes some-

thing else, after editing, it is different and post release you don’t know what happened,” she rued. Moushumi will return to Bollywood after a gap of nine

years with Shoojit Sircar’s next family comedy-drama ‘Piku’ and she said from now on she will get on-board a project if there is proper paperwork.

trash-talker in his younger days, has often courted controversy — Comparing himself favorably to Muhammad Ali and flaunting the perks his wealth has brought: houses, cars, even an airplane. But Mayweather, who said this week he expects a payday of USD 200 million for this fight alone, says none of that will matter when he steps in the ring. “I believe in my skills. I believe I will be victorious,” said Mayweather, who puts his World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association welterweight belts on the line against Pacquiao, the World Boxing Organization champ who boasts a record of 57-5-2. For more than five years,

But the 38-year-old Mayweather said he no longer needs to indulge in trash talk. “Me speaking loud and having personality, I did that in the past,” he said. “I’m a lot older and wiser, this fight sells itself. I don’t have to do it.” A world champion in five weight divisions and closing in on Rocky Marciano’s iconic record of 49-0, Mayweather scoffs at the notion that the 36year-old Pacquiao, winner of world titles in an unprecedented eight weight divisions will be the one to get past his consummate defense. But Roach, who admits he has been studying Mayweather for years, believes he knows the key to a Pacquiao victory. “I think we have more speed, more power and I think we’re 100 percent ready for what he brings to the table,” Roach said.

contractual hurdles and animosity between the camps kept the top pound-for-pound fighters of their generation from meeting in the ring. Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum, whose Top Rank Promotions is partnering with Mayweather Promotions to produce the event just as television rivals HBO and Showtime have come together in a rare partnership, said the experience had been “hellish”.

Yuki Bhambri reaches singles quarters of Taipei Challenger T

AIPEI: Indian Davis Cupper Yuki Bhambri overwhelmed higher-ranked Jimmy Wang in straight sets to progress to the singles quarterfinals of the USD 75000 ATP Challenger event, here today. Unseeded Yuki tamed the eighth seed local player 6-3 6-1 in the second round of the Indoor tournament, being played on carpet. After a difficult start, Yuki dominated the 64-minute contest in which he saved all three breakpoints in the opening set. He broke his rival, ranked 132 on ATP charts, twice in each set. Yuki, ranked 216, did not face a single breakpoint on his serve in the second set. Yuki though said the match was not easy as the scoreline suggested. “It was not easy at all. I

once I got a break in the first set. That really helped my confidence,” Yuki said. “Then I just stayed with him and focussed on my service games and he eventually started mistakes.” He next faces Japanese third seed Go Soeda, an experienced campaigner ranked 87 in the world. Yuki has played Soeda once before, having suffered defeat in Yokohoma last year. “This is a tough tournament and Go Soeda beat me easy last time. I will try to change that. But it will be tough. The conditions suit him as the courts are fast.” The 22-year-old Delhi boy has also reached the doubles was very focussed today. I quarterfinals with compahad to be. ew Delhi: Smarting from a crushing defeat in their previous game, Delhi Daredevils have no option but to go all out when they take on Kings XI Punjab, who are also struggling in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League, here tomorrow. The jinx-breaking victory at home against Mumbai Indians was the kind of boost

M

umbai: Top seed Abdullah Shaikh of AP and second seed Siddharth Vishwakarma of UP crashed out on a dramatic day of upsets, in the Khar Gymkhana All India Men’s Open Tennis Tournament on Thursday. It was a memorable day for the underdogs as qualifier Faisal Qamar of Rajasthan stunned favourite Shaikh 6-2, 6-2, while unseeded Kunal Anand of Delhi, a doublecrown winner here in 2011, upset Vishwakarma 6-4, 6-2 to storm into the quarter-finals. In yet another upset, qualifier Shahbaz Khan shunted out eighth seed Rashein Samuel of Karnataka 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. Another qualifier Aryan Goveas also advanced to the last eight following a convincing 6-0, 64 win over lucky loser Aman

Delhi needed to bring their campaign back on track but what followed was a demoralising 10-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore. They have spent a mindboggling sum to have Yuvraj Singh in their ranks but the left-hander has failed to fire even though collective failure is the prime reason for their miserable position in the tournament. The absence of Zaheer Khan due to injury has also

hurt Delhi badly and if the leftarm paceman recovers for tomorrow’s contest, as is hinted by the team management, it will be a big plus for them. They had some close matches in the beginning where the results could have gone in their favour but in this format, half-chances have to be grabbed and this is where the team has been struggling. Skipper JP Duminy and Shreyas Iyer are the only con-

sistent batsmen for them, having scored 200 or more runs in seven matches and that tells the sorry state of their batting. The next best was Mayank Agarwal with an aggregate of 150 runs in his kitty. Their bowling performance has been better with leg-spinner Imran Tahir right there at the top with 13 scalps along with Chennai Super Kings paceman Ashish Nehra.

Top two seeds crash Shah in an all-Maharashtra tie. After prevailing over Shaikh in Gwalior, this is the second occasion Qamar beat the favourite who paid the price for a slew of unforced errors. Qamar later teamed up with Bhavesh Gour to beat Darshan Srinivas and Ansu Kumar Bhuyan 7-5, 6-2 in the doubles first round. The other seeds lived up to their reputations as third seed Haadin Bava of Maharashtra, fourth seed Suraj Prabodh of Karnataka, fifth seed Anvit Bendre of Maharashtra and sixth seed Vijaj Kannan of Tamil Nadu progressed to the quarter-finals.

Golden Tigers, Naaz United make winning starts M

umbai: Golden Tigers roared to a close 1-0 win against Konaark Realtors in an opening league match of the inaugural Colaba Super League (CSL) football, conducted under auspices of the MDFA and played at the Back Garden ground, Colaba. Striker Noel Rodricks struck the lone goal in the 16th minute of the match. The CSL is supported by Aadhar Pratishthan. In another well-contested match, Karim Shaikh’s 29th minute strike was good enough for Naaz United to eke out a 1-0 win against Hiraai Suns. Meanwhile, Brainy World had things much their own way as they cruised to a 3-1 win against Kalakaar Indians. For the winners the goals were scored by skiller Chetan Tandel, Devdas Patil and Hemant Meher, while Sushant Jadhav reduced the margin for the losers. Earlier a colourful ceremony marked the opening of CSL at the Back Gardens Football Ground in Colaba, which will host this festival of football in Mumbai’s footballing hub. It seemed like the good old

days of football had made its way back to Colaba as the ceremony was greeted with great enthusiasm by the citizens, both young and old from the area, who gathered in large numbers. Gracing the occasion were prominent dignitaries, including Raj Purohit, BJP MLA from Colaba along with corporator Smt Sushma Salunke, Vinod Shekhar, former Congress corporator. Ms Anjali Shah who represents PIFA Colaba, the biggest club in Colaba, was also present to lend her support. Krishna Pawle, President of the CSL was delighted to finally see his dream become reality, but that has just given him a chance to dream bigger. “I am happy to see CSL finally ready to start. We want football to grow and use it to help the community. We have strived hard for this and will continue to do so. Now we have a new dream, a dream of seeing a CSL player play for India one day,” he said. Results: Naaz United 1 (Karim Shaikh) beat Hiraai Suns 0. Brainy World 3 (Chetan Tandel, Devdas Patil, Hemant Meher) beat Kalakaar Indians 1.

Lahiri beats Palmer for winning debut in WGC Match Play S

an Francisco (US): Anirban Lahiri indicated he is ready to make his presence felt at the highest levels, as he made a sensational debut at the WGC-Cadillac Match Play, beating higherranked Ryan Palmer of the US comprehensively for a 4&2 win in Group 6. In the second set of matches, Lahiri will meet Justin Rose, while Marc Leishman meets Palmer. In the other match in the Group, Leishman stunned Rose 2&1 to throw the Group wide open. Lahiri, ranked No. 35 in the world, a seven-time winner on Asian Tour and twice on European Tour, started and closed well and had six birdies against no bogeys in his 16 holes to bolster his matchplay credentials. “I played really good,” said Lahiri. “It was a really solid round. I don’t think Ryan played poorly, either, I think it was a really good match. It was massive for me to birdie 13, and then chip in on 14 to keep myself three ahead.” The other two players in

the Group are Justin Rose, Masters runner-up and winner of the PGA Tour event in New Orleans, and World No. 60, Marc Leishman. Interestingly, Leishman stunned Rose 2&1 to throw the group wide open. As per the new format the 64 players have been divided into 16 groups of four each. Each players plays the other three and the winner of the group proceeds to Last 16. Lahiri was happy with the fact that he did not bogey. “I’m pretty happy I didn’t make a bogey today: that’s a pretty good sign for me and putting better, feeling good.” Talking of Match Play, Lahiri added, “I think I do pretty well in match play. I was just talking to my caddie about it and there’s no letting up. You have to kind of be in the zone right through. And you can’t have a plateau in your focus, you’ve got to be really intense. And I think I like playing golf that way. So hopefully I can keep that up.”

India’s campaign in New Zealand Open ends

A

UCKLAND: The Indian campaign at the USD 120,000 New Zealand Open Grand Prix Gold ended today after Anand Pawar and Rachita Sahdev lost their respective matches here today. Pawar, seeded 11th, was outplayed 14-21 7-21 by South Korean third seed Lee Hyun Il in 34 minutes in the third round of men’s singles at the

North Shore Events Centre here. With this victory, Lee has extended his lead to 2-0 over the Indian. Meanwhile, Rachita Sahdev along with her mixed doubles partner Abhinav Manota of New Zealand lost 7-21 10-21 against Chinese fifth seeded pair of Zheng Si Wei and Chen Qingchen in 19 minutes in the second round.

Paes-Stepanek knocked out of BMW Open

M

UNICH: The IndoCzech pair of Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek was thrashed by Austrian-Brazilian duo Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares in the men’s doubles quarterfinals of the BMW Open tennis here today. The top seeds notched up a comfortable 6-2 6-1 win in 54 minutes on the clay courts of MTTC Iphitos. Peya and Soares completely dominated at the start by saving three breakpoints

and winning two to easily take the advantage in the first set where they won 25 of the 45 points played. The script got even better for the top seeds as they took a game less to close the set and match in their favour. With their win, Peya and Soares levelled their head-tohead to 2-2 against PaesStepanek. It was the first meeting between the two pairs on a clay court with the previous meetings coming on hard courts

They have other issues to be sorted out too. One of the major ones is the lack of a good opening combination as Parthiv Patel, who opened in the previous game with Lendl Simmons, has not really been convincing despite getting some starts. With just 73 runs from five games to his credit, the diminutive Gujarat Ranji cap-

tain has not made the sort of impact the team’s think tank, led by chief coach Ricky Ponting, would have liked. Captain and batting lynchpin Rohit Sharma -– who has scored 244 runs so far — has constantly harped on having the team combination right when asked why he’s not been opening the innings despite scoring a brilliant 98 in

the IPL opener on April 8 against KKR. The team’s think-tank could be tempted to ask him to revert to the opening slot after the lack of big partnerships at the top. The other issue is the absence of a good spin option to complement Harbhajan Singh’s tight wicket-taking spells in the middle overs.
