aking a firm stand and refusing to succumb to any pressure, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday clarified that there will be no probe against Amir Khan starrer 'PK'. A day after the Minister of State for Home Ram Shinde ordered an inquiry into the film's content, the CM categorically rejected any probe and ensured the smooth screening of the film.

Speaking to reporters, Fadnavis said, “There will not be any inquiry into the film. The shows of 'PK' will continue all over the state and we will provide necessary protection to ensure the smooth screening of the film. The shows of 'PK' will continue in Maharashtra.” Amid protests by rightwing groups like Bajarang Dal and Visha Hindu Parishad demanding a ban on the movie, which takes a swipe at Hindu gods, godmen and supersti-

tions, the Minister of State for Home Ram Shinde on Tuesday said that he had asked the police to probe contents of the film. Shinde had asked IG (Law and Order) Deven Bharti to look into objectionable scenes, if any, in the film and promised necessary action if any wrong was found.“The censor board may have found the film fit to be released and hence they cleared it from their end. But after the release some organisations have objected to some parts of the film. The government will step in if the issue snowballs into any law and order problem,” Shinde had pointed out. However, Fadnavis overruled the decision of probe and gave a blow to his own colleagues. A week ago, the right-wing Hindu groups took to the streets, staging protests that have turned violent in some places including BJP-ruled Gujarat where theatres have been vandalised. Protests have also taken place in several states including Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Haryana and Delhi, besides Hyderabad and Mumbai. ADIEU, TO THE YEAR BYGONE... A group of girls take a selfie, while youngsters play music and sing songs on New Year's eve at the Marine Drive promenade on Wednesday.

o maintain law and order in the city during the New Year celebrations last night, the Mumbai traffic police had framed certain guidelines for hotels, restaurants, clubs, resorts, organisations, institutions, as well as the general public. But after this order, most of the students, youngsters and hard drinkers went out of the city to celebrate in order to avoid action from the cops. sorts, and other entities within the city had come up with various guidelines and rules to have a responsible celebration. Those found violating the rules would be dealt with strictly, it was stated. So many revellers were seen going off to Goa and other adjoining places. The young Mumbaikars are of the opinion that the cops have been unjust to them by issuing these guidelines. One young lad said, “How can we celebrate New Year without getting drunk? And if we drink too much, then the cops will catch us. This is not a time to fear, so most of my friends have decided to leave the city. “ One traffic police officer said that students and other youngsters found behaving indecently on the roads will be strictly dealt with. One youngster said, “This time the cops will not let us go easily if they catch us. We did not want to start our New Year with a bad day, so we've decided to stay home and drink as much as we want to.” Joint Commissioner of Police Dr BK Upadhyay said, “We have strictly warned every hotel and pub owner to follow the rules and regulations which we had laid down for the celebrations.”

Most well-known hotels, pubs and restaurants across the city displayed catchy hoardings to welcome their customers for the New Year 2015 celebrations, wishing them 'Peach, Love and Joy'.

Capturing a cancelled wedding

One of the many pictures clicked at the ‘trashing the dress’ ceremony.

NOT all relationships are meant to last and in one such story, it was called off just before the wedding was scheduled to happen. A 23year-old girl faced a cancelled wedding just a few days before she was meant to tie the knot with her partner for two years. But the twist is that this girl handled it in the best way possible. By gathering her parents, her bridesmaids, and her photographer together and staging one of the best photo shoots. Her story and the accompanying photos are currently going viral on social networking sites. She and her ex-fiance met in 2011. During 2012, they found themselves trying to make a long distance relationship work. But by March of 2014 they got engaged and began planning a November wedding. Five days before what was originally meant to be the wedding date, he called the whole thing off. He apparently was no more in love with her. She spent the following days calling guests, cancelling all the wedding services they had arranged, and working living arrangements. Her family and friends

were supportive; as the day itself approached, though, neither she nor they were totally sure what they should do. A few people, including the wedding photographer brought up the idea of 'trashing the dress'. So her family and her bridesmaids got all dolled up in their wedding finery, brought a whole bunch of paint with them, and had the

photographer capture not a wedding ceremony, but a riotous, colourful, paintstrewn afternoon. The painted dress is currently on display at a bridal salon in the town; through the beginning of 2015, a portion the proceeds from each wedding dress sold there will go to Be Free Revolution, a non-profit that helps other women learn how to find their inner strength.

The Parsi legend

THE governmentcommissioned Jiyo Parsi programme has been running a lot of promotional material in media publications, encouraging the Parsi people to have children so that the community does not die out. One of the ads in the series mentions a legend in which the Parsi people made a

promise to an Indian king. The one-liner of this particular ad is: “The milk is in grave danger of running out of sugar.” This diarist came across some people who knew nothing of the said-legend, non-Parsis, of course. And legends are always interesting. So we thought we'd use this space to enlighten readers of the said legend, just in case you don't already know it. Modern-day Parsis recount a folktale of the Zoroastrian arrival in India, their ships arriving in Sanjan and being met by the local raja. Lacking a common language, the raja presented the refugees with a full glass of milk, indicating that there was no place for them. The Zoroastrians responded by adding a spoonful of sugar to the milk, demonstrating that they would blend into their surroundings and sweeten

03

the proverbial glass of milk without causing it to overflow. Ultimately, the Zoroastrians were allowed to settle in India with some provisions: First, the mobeds, or priests, were to explain their religion to the raja At the rajas request, weddings were to be performed after sunset, like the Hindus in that area The immigrants were to speak the local language The women were to wear the sari

The result was the development of a distinct Parsi community, characterised by selective assimilations and by its creative contributions to an adopted homeland. But now, as the ad says, the milk is in grave danger of running out of sugar.

V.P. Road Police’s search for housebreaking accused, net 3 murderers; 6 more on the run By Zuber Ansari

hile the VP Road police, following information, on Monday set out to apprehend a wanted accused in a house-breaking case, two murder cases unraveled in front of them. The police could not get hold of the accused in the house-breaking case at the suspected location but instead found three others who were to meet him. During interrogation, these three revealed that they had killed one youth in the Shakti Mills compound in Mahalaxmi in 2011 and another teenager in the Pattharwadi area near Marine Drive in July 2014, after performing

Singhraj Raaapannan alias Kaali Anaa (23), Sunil Nandkishor Kumar (30) and Vishal Shaaligram Pagdhaam while the three accomplices are Siraj, Raj Chikna alias Mustafa and Kiran. The police suspect that Siraj is likely to be the same person who was involved in the Shakti Mills gang-rape case that took place in August 2013. The teenager that the trio claimed to have killed in Pattarwadi in July 2014 also involved three other men called Raja Bhaiyya, Devthapa and Raja. They killed him by strangulating him and later threw his body into the sea. In both the murder cases, the victims were unknown to the accused. According to Police Inspector (PI-Crime) from VP Road police station Sanjay Kamble, “We were shocked when the trio revealed about the double murder on December 29. We had gone to Gulalwadi to catch an accused in a house-

breaking case who was supposed to meet these three criminals.” “As per their confession, we searched the crime records in the NM Joshi Marg Police station since Shakti Mills falls under this police station jurisdiction. We then got to know that in September 2011, one murder has been registered here but the identity of the victim was not established. When we contacted Marine Drive Police station, we came to know that in July 2014, the police had found a 16-year-old's dead body from inside the sea and they had registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in this case,” Kamble added. With the arrest of the three accused, the names of six more culprits involved in the two murder cases have surfaced and the hunt for them is on. The accused have been handed over to the Marine Drive police station for interrogation in the minor's murder.

The morcha reached the Tehsildar’s office at 10.30 am after a half hour of slogan shouting urging the government to maintain restraint and waving Congress flags. Michael and a core group presented a memorandum of demands to Tehsildar Sunil Koli, who assured them that he would convey their message to the government. Advocate Noel Dabre, who happened to be at the court next door, was critical about the Congress party. He said that this situation would not have arisen had the Congress ruled properly.

MU errs yet again Issues study material full of mistakes to its IDOL students By Yatin Ingle

D.K. Mittal Committee has recommended increasing the highly subsidised and loss-making suburban train fares

W

hile the University of Mumbai (MU) has been trying its best to get rid of its varied problems, it has given another chance to critics with its study material issued to the students of the Institute of Open and Distance Learning (IDOL). This study material carries numerous errors in spellings, sentence framing, grammar, punctuation and overall content. The content is haphazardly put down into books, with shabby or no editing and review, complete with factual errors too. This has caused major irritation to the students, most of whom are already likely to be burdened with jobs, considering they are undertaking distance learning courses. The IDOL is an institute for correspondence studies and provides books for self study. The charges for these books are included in the fees. After collecting the books from the institute, students got a shock as they came across consistent errors in all of the subject books. The ADC spoke to one such student (studying MA Part II – Sociology), who said, “The study material is as good as useless as the mistakes make it highly irritating to understand the

N

matter. The University should stop being so negligent. Being a working person, I also don't have the luxury and time to hunt for other notes.” Last year, a similar complaint had come from the IDOL students regarding errors in the study material but

ather-daughter duo Mahesh and Pooja Bhatt today mourned the death of costume designer Isha Mantry, who died allegedly due to drug overdose in Goa. Mantry (28), who worked on films like Priyanka Chopara starrer 'Mary Kom', medical thriller 'Ankur Arora Murder Case', 'Dangerous Ishq' and 'Hate Story 2' was brought dead on December 29 at a hospital. She was in Goa to participate at a recently concluded electronic dance music event. "Amusing yourself to death! Do you know that when Isha Mantry, our designer, dropped to the dance floor and died, the music did not stop? Tragic!," Mahesh posted on Twitter.

Pooja too condemned the music festival and wrote, "Isha Mantry I can't believe you have left us so early. You with the dancing eyes and shy smile! Why my love? WHY?... What appalls me is the damn music did not stop at EDM even after Isha's body was carried off the floor. Are we that blase? That brain dead?" The 'Jism 2' director called on youngsters to not to take drugs. "Stick to alcohol if you must guys! Smoke a damn joint! But for God's sake, leave the chemicals BEHIND. Life is too damn precious (sic)," she tweeted. Actress Richa Chadha tweeted, "RIP Isha. Gone too soon. Heartbreaking news this morning." PTI

the institute did not pay any heed to it and has repeated its mistake. Dr Harishchandra, Director, IDOL, said, “Till now the institute has not received any complaints about the errors. We will definitely look into this matter thoroughly now.”

EW DELHI: A hike in passenger train fares, particularly in suburban service, and increase in the minimum distance to be covered in passenger and express trains are among the recommendations made by an official committee in its report submitted to Railways. The D.K. Mittal Committee, formed on December 4 this year to suggest ways and means to raise the revenue of Indian Railways, has made out a strong case for increasing the highly subsidised and loss-making suburban train fares, reports PTI. According to the recommendation, the suburban fares need to be increased by 2 paise per km every two months till they reach a break-even point. However, it did not specify the quantum of hike needed to be made in long-distance mail/express train services. The committee yesterday submitted its report to Rail-

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu way Minister Suresh Prabhu. The committee also said the minimum distance of travel in passenger train should be increased from existing 10km to 20km and in mail/express segment it should be increased from 50km to 100km. Currently, even if a passenger travels less than 10 km he is charged for the 10km in a passenger train and 50km in mail/express trains. The expert panel has observed that the current suburban fares is 60 per cent less than road travel cost and emphasised the need for increasing fares in a gradual

manner. The committee has also suggested that railway PSUs should be given the task to execute the rail projects. "The PSUs should be given a free hand to raise funds from the banks and after completion of the projects, they would be handed over to railways," said a senior Railway Ministry official who was privy to the report. The committee's report is crucial for railways as its recommendations is expected to help the ailing national transporter to take certain concrete measures which would be presented to Parliament in the rail budget for 2015-16 in February. Railway Ministry had set up the nine-member committee on December 4 under the chairmanship of former Secretary (financial services) D K Mittal to examine the existing revenue structure and recommend ways to raise fund for the public sector behemoth facing cash crunch. The committee, in its report, has given a detailed study on the efficacy and sufficiency of the existing revenue structure and avenues for raising income besides identifying its leakages. On expenditure front, the committee has suggested certain measures for reduction in spending.

Ponder awhile... “The New Year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals.” — Melody Beattie

Wishing A Happy New Year to all readers!

They cannot do E sans dynasty I

N no time at all, the Congress Party is likely to be a complete non-entity in the country. There are some states where it still rules. It is certain the end is near. The leaders wonder how the total collapse of the party took place. Some of them hold the view that Nehru-Gandhi dynasty does not draw crowds anymore. This is becoming more and more clear: In Jharkhand, in eight polling segments, Rahul Gandhi carried out extensive campaign. The Congress got only one seat. He did not pull crowds. The same thing can be said about Congress president Sonia Gandhi. They will not, however, give up. And strangely enough, the party leaders do not want them to go. It looks like they feel orphaned without the dynasty family. And it is a fact that none in the party is ready to assume leadership. There is now one more effort not to hold Sonia and Rahul responsible for the defeat: Some party leaders have started saying that secular card has been overplayed with the result that a pro-minority image has been created. This has led to the rejection of the Congress by the majority committee. The situation has become so hopeless for the Congress that it cannot win anywhere in the country. One thing has become certain: The revival of the Congress with Sonia and Rahul at the head is a remote possibility.

VERYTHING in life becomes outdated after its stipulated time-frame and has to disappear to give space for the new comer. As dried leaves falls to allow now leaves to grow, a fading year also has to go behind the thick curtain of history to make room for the New Year. Today, we bid a goodbye to 2014 and get ourselves prepared to welcome 2015 with a great hope and aspiration. Year after year pass by and we keep regenerating our resolutions and keep the hope alive to welcome the coming year. A lot is already spoken and written about the year 2014 that has become a part of history. Instead of spending time and energy on what happened in the past, let’s deliberate what does future hold for you and what do you expect from the New Year.

the Modi government establishes comfortable majority in both the Houses, it can pass any legislation without many obstacles. This means, the government would not have to wait and bank on ‘outside’ support and in return agree to some of their demands. That’s the hope for tomorrow. The UPA rule from 2004 to 2014 always had to depend on outside support for its working. Earlier the support was rendered by the group of left parties led by CPI(M) and in the second innings, that role was played by Mulayam Singh’s Samajwadi

Difficult phase

Political stability 2014 saw the most significant and epochmaking Lok Sabha elections, those threw away the sitting government of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) led by the Congress. This was followed by State Assembly elections in four states of which the BJP unseated Congress in three states and is No,2 in Jammu & Kashmir. However, in the by-elections for various State Assembly elections in UP, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Rajasthan, the BJP did not do well. In short, the whole year saw only elections after regular intervals, 2015 would be no different. The Delhi Assembly elections are round the corner, followed by Bihar, UP, Punjab would be in queue. In short, this year will also have many extravaganzas of election campaigns and TV channels would have a good time for its coverage. If BJP continues to win these elections too, it would establish it’s complete control over the national politics and Prime Minister Narendra Modi would emerge as the supreme leader of the nation having his sway all over. Moreover, the verdict of the ensuing Assembly elections would also determine the BJP’s strength to pass bills in both Houses of the Parliament without taking support of any other party. Today, though BJP has a mammoth majority in Lok Sabha, it still falls short in reaching the half-way mark in Rajya Sabha. The possible win the next elections, particularly in Bihar and UP would give a steep rise to BJP’s number in the Upper House. This will hopefully bring in a political and executive stability to the government. Once

THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut Party and M. Karunanidhi’s Dravid Munnetra Kalagham (DMK). Both the partners in power demanded and snatched their ‘pound of flesh’ in return of support to the government on the floor of the Parliament. If BJP assumes full control, there is a flip side to this story also. Going by the mindset and style of functioning adopted by Modi, it is difficult to believe that he would remain as democrat as a Prime Minister of this nation should be in future. This would bring in post 1971 era of late Indira Gandhi, when she was enjoying unabated power in the Parliament and in her party. In case of Modi, he has already taken the driver’s seat in his BJP. He would become a unitary leader of the country, if he assumes similar majority in the Parliament too. In a Parliamentary democracy like India, there are built-in checks and balances. But this system also has its limitations. A mammoth majority and people’s mandate can bulldoze all norms and systems as was witnessed during Indira Gandhi’s regime. The bygone year was a decisive year in this context. The country is passing through a difficult phase when Modi took over the reins of the government. Our economy is on the verge of collapse and the socio-cultural fabric in a

A promise to act on self-improvement New Year's Eve has always been a time for looking back, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It's a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on those changes. We all come up with the regular resolutions for the upcoming year, but often our ideas of what should change are too broad. This New Year, we should all vow to take a closer look into our lives and make decisions about ourselves. However, a New Year's resolution is a secular tradition in which a person makes a promise to act on self-improvement or something slightly nice, beginning from New Year's Day. Some examples include resolutions to donate to the poor more often, to become more assertive, or to become more environmen-

fragile state. Now that he has already completed more than six months in office, his honeymoon time is over. Now the people, who voted him in with a great expectation, will demand results. Unfortunately, the state of affairs in the Finance Ministry is such that it cannot live up to even a minimum expectation of any. Whether multi-billionaire industrialist or a man living below poverty-line on the pavements of Mumbai; the government has no remedy to live up to their expectations. The ensuing Union Budget in March to be presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will be his acid test. In the absence of Planning Commission, only Finance Minister will be held responsible for all the hard decisions that the ministry would be bound to take and execute to save national economy.

The question is will the government be able to face and ride this tide. If yes, Modi would be assured to rule the country for one more term, but in case if he fails to deliver, it would be difficult for him even to complete the term. It was Modi himself and none else who would be in the ‘accuse box’ in case, the government fails to live up to people’s expectations. This is because it was none else but Modi himself, who had hyped people’s expectations. He, while running a singlehanded campaign for Lok Sabha elections, had assured people the sun, the moon and the earth; and all three together; that too in quick succession. Therefore, people don’t wish to wait nor do they have any patience. To worsen Modi’s plight, the rain god was not very generous this monsoon. Half of the rural India is reeling under acute drought-like situation; it would further deteriorate as the summer approaches. The water level in many dams has already started reaching alarming level. This would result in acute shortage of drinking water and fodder for cattle-heads. That would be an unfortunate horror scene. This type of natural calamity is taken as a ‘God-sent’ opportunity by traders and businessmen. It all depends upon how the Modi government and various state administrations handle the situation. If they fail to deliver, not only the population, but Modi himself will have a tough time to face people. In short, the first few months of 2015 will determine and design the fate of not only the nation but also the its rulers. Thus, let’s keep our fingers crossed and pray to wish all of us: A Very Happy New Year! THIS refers to 'MSD hangs his Whites' (ADC, Dec 31). Mahendra Singh Dhoni has done a huge disservice to Indian cricket, by retiring from the longer format of the game, mid-series. Even though Dhoni has the most dismal record as Test captain outside Asia, with a poor 20 per cent win record, it was incumbent on him to wait till the end of the Sydney Test match, which is just one week away. No knowledgeable Indian cricket enthusiast will miss Dhoni in the Test arena, either as captain or player. But his gross irresponsible act of retiring midway through the Test series in Australia, has made India a laughing stock in the cricket world. It has also heaped a lot of unnecessary pressure on young Virat Kohli and his team mates prior to the Sydney Test. New year, new hopes THE New Year has dawned. It is now 2015 and we have another 365 days of opportunities ahead of us. New Year’s day according to the Gregorian calendar (January 1) is one of the most popular occasions in India. Many people throughout India celebrate this festive occasion with loved ones or in large gatherings. People greet and wish each other. Exchanging messages, greeting cards and gifts are a part and parcel of the New Year celebration. The media covers many New Year events which are showcased on prime channels for most of the day. tain the rest of the series, it is abundantly clear that Kohli will be the next captain. But this would be a mistake. Kohli has demonstrated that he is the best batsman in the team. Burdening him with captaincy would not augur well for the team. In fact India would have done much better if Gavaskar and Kapil were not captains and allowed to just do what they are best at. We had other seniors like Kirmani, Amarnath, Vengsarkar. Who should be captain? Someone who walks into the team but is not a star. Apart from Kohli we have Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and R Ashwin, as possible contenders. The appointment of the first two can create unnecessary bad blood, given personality clashes in Indian teams. Should Ashwin or someone else be groomed as captain? Kohli should be a perpetual vice-captain, just as Neil Harvey and Conrad Hunte were, so that he can just concentrate on his batting.

Again, he ought to have batted higher up in the batting order to give the side the much-needed confidence. PM Narendra Modi emerged as star performer on world stage

By Priyanka Tikoo

EW DELHI: Emergence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a star performer on the world stage was the highlight of Indian foreign policy during 2014 which was described by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj as truly a "Year of Breakthrough Diplomacy". Modi's diplomatic outreach was evident the moment he took over as Prime Minister with the leaders of SAARC countries attending his swearing-in ceremony. His visit, thereafter, to the US, Japan and seven other countries confirmed his status as major global figure, reports PTI. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif were among his special guests but relations between the two neighbours actually soured later over ceasefire violations, that country's involvement with Kashmiri separatists and kid glove treatment A screen displays PM Modi addressing the audience during a reception organised in his honour by the Indian American Community given to key conspirators of Mumbai Foundation at Madison Square Garden in New York.

"They are all a reflection of our government's vision of India's shared future as an integral part of a peaceful, secure and prosperous comity of nations in South Asia, and the world beyond," she said. Modi's summit level engagements with strategic partners like the US and Russia with major substantive outcomes, were a major part of our diplomatic success story of the past six months, the minister noted. However, Swaraj expressed concern over the fate of Indians held hostage in strife-torn Iraq. "As 2014 draws to an end, the uncertainty about the fate of 39 Indians in Iraq continues to weigh deeply on all of us. Our efforts will continue unabated," she said. The government was also involved in rescue mission for Indian citizens in Libya, Iraq and Lugansk in Ukraine since it took over in May. "Over the past six months, we have successfully secured the release of more than 550 Indian fishermen from the Sri Lankan jails," the External Affairs Minister said in her foreword for an e-booklet highlighting ministry's initiatives. "2014 has truly been a Year of Breakthrough Diplomacy. India's star is today shining ever brighter on the global firmament... "With 'Diplomacy for Development' as the overarching theme of our global engagements in 2015, we will pursue the vision of a Rising India, with new vigour and even greater resolve," she added.

Pakistan will remain a challenge for Modi government's diplomacy in the year ahead with experts maintaining that Islamabad will only talk about the dialogue with India but will not do anything "spectacular" to make it happen. "I don't expect any spectacular engagement of Pakistan with India even though that country will keep talking about dialogue. They will not act against terror groups like Jaish and Lashker and we need to keep a watch on the ground," former Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan G Parthasarathy said. "Pakistan will remain a challenge given its internal political dynamics and role of its military in the foreign policy," he added when asked the reasons for Pakistan's particular approach towards India. He also talked about the increas-

ing involvement of Pakistan with Afghanistan, a strategically important neighbour of India and vulnerable in terms of security situation after the withdrawal of combat NATO troops. While Pakistan will remain a challenge, India also has to trade carefully while dealing with China, whose President Xi Jinping was yet another high-profile guests of Modi while the Chinese troops carried out incursions in Chumar sector of Ladakh. Summing up the Modi government's diplomacy in 2014, Swaraj said, revitalising traditional ties, re-setting strategic relations and reaching out to Indians abroad have been primary to

Fashion Rewind Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 1, 2015

Like every other year, 2014 saw its fair share of fashion trends taking centre stage. While some became wardrobe staples, others made their way out of our closets faster than we could get around to doing one load of laundry. Shirley Mistry & Yamini Walia bring your their verdict on which fashion trends you should hold on to, and which ones it’s time to bid adieu to

Crop Tops

>> Sheer clothing is definitely a trend to carry forward into the New Year

Let’s get this out of the way immediately. While crop tops did take the fashion world by storm — and we admit to jumping on to the bandwagon ourselves — quite honestly, this is one trend that we’d like to see go away now — unless you’re on a beach and want to wear something between a tshirt and bikini. We do have a soft spot for fitted crop tops paired with knee-length pencil skirts, but too much of a good thing can be bad, and after sifting through endless racks of crop tops at clothing stores, we think that change is in order. Apart from sheer boredom, crop tops don’t flatter all body types, which is another reason why we aren’t completely sold on the trend. Expert speak Designer Nidhi Munim isn’t a fan either. She tells us, “A crop top is too short to be called a top, but too long to be called a bralette. This trend was just a fad, because it isn’t really wearable.”

We love sheer clothing. From saris with sheer pallus, to a simple top with sheer sleeves or a panel at the base, this style screams elegance and can elevate your look when it’s worn right. While a dress or top that is entirely sheer might be too risqué and is certainly not our cup of tea, we love how you can take a sheer panelled top or skirt and pair basics with it to create a look that is effortlessly chic. Expert speak Nidhi explains that sheer clothing had a major moment on the runway this year. Telling us about the best way to rock the trend, Nidhi explains, “Sheer clothing works great when it’s paired with a non-sheer layer underneath.”

WidE-lEg TrousErs We’re divided on this one. While wide-leg bottoms are reminiscent of the ’80s — in a pretty unpleasant way (unless your style is iconic retro) — wide-leg shorts, are super cute. They add an element of interest to an otherwise boring, staple clothing item and flatter most body types. In fact, if you have

From skirts, shorts and dresses, to saris, lehengas and tops, graphic prints really made their presence felt this year. And, we’re not just referring to classic black and white checks or stripes, as there are a gamut of prints, fabrics and textures to experiment with when it comes to this style. Whether it’s in bright, neon shades or in a monochromatic colour palette, graphic prints can be as crazy or as minimal as you want them to be, making them a versatile trend. Since they are so rich and varied, they adapt well to all fashion sensibilities, from edgy to minimalistic. Expert speak Graphic prints are definitely a trend to reckon with in 2015. Nidhi tells us, “Pop art prints, dresses and sweatshirts and are definitely here to stay.”

broad hips or a heavy bottom, the flare can actually work in your favour by drawing attention away from it and balancing out your figure. Expert speak While we aren’t completely in favour of wide-leg pants, Nidhi seems relatively happy with this trend. She explains, “This style gives you the chance to step out of your regular slim look, especially, when you feel bold enough to wear something unique.”

FringEd CloThing We’re on the fence about this trend. While everything from tops, shorts, skirts, shrugs and cover ups came bearing a fringed end, the fad isn’t spectacular. Unless you are looking to jazz up a simple t-shirt and jeans outfit with a fringed kimono shrug, or sport a similar style, we don’t understand the appeal of wearing a fringed outfit — unless you’re going to perform a salsa routine that involves a lot of sashaying. Expert speak Nidhi isn’t a complete believer in the fringe trend

>> While fringes get a thumbs down from us, our expert believes that they add a boho-country vibe to an outfit

CulottEs

shiFt blousE

Culottes are wide-legged, high-waisted pants that end right above, or slightly below your knees. We aren’t big fans of culottes, simply because they pair with a limited number of tops and look flattering only on very skinny women. If you are bottom heavy, stay away from them as the high waist and the short length will only highlight your problem areas. But, for everyone else, you now have an alternative to your much-loved skinny jeans! Expert speak While we want this trend to stay in 2014, our expert doesn’t feel the same. Nidhi says, “They might not be feminine, but culottes do carry a certain level of sophistication in spite of their casual feel. This style has an understated elegance.”

More of a silhouette than a fashion trend, we’re all onboard with the comeback of shift blouses. The boxy tops and elbow-length sleeves, which makes them perfect for everyday wear. Whether you experiment with embellishments, pastels, florals or graphic prints, the silhouette lends itself beautifully to almost every style. Expert speak The shift blouse was quite a rage in 2014. Nidhi tells us, “The shift blouse could serve as a dressy tee or a casual yet hip blouse in 2015 too and help your transform a day look into a night one with ease.”

>> While we would leave overalls in 2014, our expert thinks that this trend still has potential

PastEls Baby blues, icy pinks, pale yellows and minty greens — pastels are soothing and look very chic, making this a trend that we absolutely adore. They can be worn as is, or paired with graphic prints and metallics if you are looking to switch up your look, which is why we definitely recommend adding a few pastel pieces to your wardrobe. Expert speak A believer of the trend, Nidhi says, “Pastels are hotter than ever! From sporty to glam, this classic trend will remain a fashion trend this year as well.”

tEa-lEngth skirts We did an entire feature on tea-length skirts at the beginning of 2014 and our love for them hasn’t faded one bit. They’re ideal to wear to work, to a party or on a casual day out and they flatter all figures and body types. They aren’t too short or too long, hitting your calves at a flattering spot. They can be dressed up or down to suit all occasions and are a must-have. Expert speak In Nidhi’s opinion, this voluminous, ladylike silhouette is here to stay. She adds, “They are back in an array of prints and pretty florals.”

either. She tells us, “Fringes give dresses a very boho-country look. It’s definitely a popular trend this season, but it is not a classic style statement that will last!” Tops, skirts, trousers, bags and even shoes came bearing faux-jewels and intricate embellishments in 2014, and we couldn’t be happier. Wearing an embellished accessory or item of clothing instantly jazzes up your look and is our go-to fashion hack for when we have to go to party but can’t be bothered to make too much of an effort. We especially love tops with jewelled, embellished necklines, which make you look like you’ve worn a necklace and eliminate the hassle of finding matching accessories. What’s not to love?! Expert speak Whether it’s embellished clothes, shoes or accessories, Nidhi agrees with us and is also a big fan of this trend. She says, “Embellishment is always classy, and a good way to enrich both day and night wardrobes.”

Florals

ovEralls

A timeless trend that often makes a comeback as seasons change, we think florals are a timeless style. Whether in watercolour finish or in bold, neon colours, they pair well with most other fashion trends and minor variations in the size of the floral print ensures that they suit every silhouette. We love vintage-inspired floral top and pencil skirt twin sets and think that this trend can be adapted to suit casual wear and work wear alike. Expert speak In Nidhi’s opinion, florals are absolutely stunning and definitely timeless. She says, “Floral clothing marks a new dawn for femininity. Small or large, subtle or bold, these prints will remain a favourite in 2015 as well.”

If you grew up in the ‘90s, overalls were a wardrobe staple. Everyone had at least one overall dress/ skirt or shorts to throw over a basic t-shirt. After all, we were young then and didn’t know better. But, now that we do, we would relegate any overalls to the back of the closet, reserved solely for spring cleaning. They are not very flattering and unless garage-chic is your style of choice, we recommend staying away from them, especially if you’re going to pair them with a crop top! Expert speak Disagreeing with our opinion on overalls, Nidhi thinks that the trend made a chic comeback this year. She tells us, “Celebrities such as Allessandra Ambrosio have been taking this one-piece outfit from practical to posh.”

bombEr jaCkEts Bomber Jackets were a fashion staple this year. They have multiple uses as they can be worn over any outfit and suit almost any occasion. For instance, the combination of a leather brown bomber jacket with a maxi dress is a classic option for a casual day out or even a romantic date. Expert speak Designer Swapnil Shinde believes that bomber jackets are a must in everyone’s wardrobe. He explains, “Bomber jackets feature in the grunge/ rock-chic category, which automatically makes you look pretty ‘cool’.”

Shuchi Pandya & Komal Goel are the names behind Pipa+Bella, a jewellery website that has caught the fancy of many. Shirley Mistry speaks to them about their venture, as they tell us about the concept and their exciting collaborations

Y

ou may not want to break out your ancestral diamond set every time you head out to a dinner party or for a night of dancing, which is where affordable, stylish fauxjewellery comes into play. But, Pipa+Bella is not just a run-of-the-mill e-store for jewellery junkies, it also provides employment to women who are looking to get their career back on track. Curious? Read on as founders Shuchi Pandya and Komal Goel open up about their pet project. n Tell us a little bit about Pipa+Bella.

In colloquial Spanish, Pipa, means someone who is daring and adventurous. In Italian, Bella means demure and graceful. So, Pipa+Bella is, in a way, a reflection of one’s own personal style and life philosophy. You could wake up one day feeling as though you can take on the world, and at other times feel more introspective. Whoever you are, our brand promotes the ideology that you should own your style and feel confident and comfortable in what you wear. n Tell us a little bit about how you

came together to start Pipa+Bella. Having grown up together as cousins, and after being surrounded by jewellery for so many years (our families are in the diamond jewellery business), starting a fashion jewellery brand was a natural fit. When we started out, we were trying to solve a common problem — we found that several Indian women take a break from their career to raise a family and then find it challenging to go back to work. That’s when we realised that we could combine our love for jewellery with a flexible, rewarding career opportunity for them.

this a conscious move? Our experience to date tells us that this particular segment of fashion jewellery is a clear opportunity. The market is currently saturated with high-end brands on one end and low-end, poor quality ones on the other. Our goal is to become the ultimate fashion jewellery destination for women who are looking for accessories that are right on trend, but don’t hurt the pocket. n Tell us about your association with

Malini Agarwal and your more recent one with Kiara Advani. We’ve recently launched a limited edition collection of social media and lifestyle-inspired charms with MissMalini. Kiara Advani’s collection is based on her daily life, and includes inspiration from her gym routine, family time and red carpet events. The designs include everything from crystal earcuffs to head chains. Both offer very different products, but are right on cue with international aesthetics. n Your website has a ‘be a stylist’

section. Tell us a little about it. As a PB Stylist, you sell Pipa+Bella accessories through your own personal website, trunk shows and social media websites such as Facebook. We currently offer two sign up plans: The On-The-Go Stylist is a free plan that gives the stylist her own personalised online store to sell Pipa+Bella accessories. The Premium Stylist plan costs `1,299 a year and not only lets you create your own website, it also allows you to design samples for trunk shows and exhibitions. In addition, the Premium Stylist gets added incentives and benefits including free gifts and rewards.

n What was the goal you started out

with? Has it changed over time? We started our business with the goal of signing up stylists, who we define as women who are typically in their mid-20’s with a love for fashion, but who also have an entrepreneurial bug. Having started multiple businesses in the past, we knew about the struggles and challenges, not to mention the heavy investments that are part of starting a brand. Today, we have over 200 stylists signed up on our portal, who earn anywhere from `1,000 to `40,000 a month in commissions, with very little investment from their end. We have also come to learn that there are more ways than one to sell a good product. Our jewellery is different and of great value, but we want to sell a unique experience, not just fabulous accessories. n Your website showcases budget-

friendly, stylish jewellery. Was

n Tell us about your favourite

accessory from your website. We’re currently obsessed with the Delta Hand Harness and the Dynasty Earrings. n Give us your picks for five

accessories that any girl must own. Every girl should own: A cocktail ring, statement necklace for parties and evening looks, delicate necklace for day wear, basic hoops, and a gold cuff. Our picks from the website are: Clique Strand Earrings, The Cleo Necklace, Sun down strand necklace, Laurel Wreath Bracelet and the Inception Ring. n What other collaborations and

collections can your customers look forward to in the future? We can’t reveal any of them just yet, but we’ve got some really exciting collaborations in the pipeline. You’ll just have to wait and see what comes up!

You’re probably familiar with the terms BB and CC, but have you heard of DD cream? I hadn’t, until I was introduced to DD (Daily Dream) by Deborah Milano, which is an all-inone foundation that promises smooth and clear skin. But, does it live up to its promise? Definitely! When I applied the foundation for the first time, I was a little skeptical, because I was unfamiliar with the term. But, as soon as I applied it, my skin felt soft and smooth. It didn’t make my skin feel greasy, which other foundations often do. The best part about this foundation is that you can apply it during the day and it won’t make you look like a ghost. In fact, it blends in with your skin. With its creamy consistency and floral fragrance, it definitely gets a thumbs up from me! where www.facebook.com/ deborahmilanoindia price `625 for 30ml rating ****

We know that modern silhouettes and edgy styles are in, but this green gown is anything but fashionable! The bulky shoulder stand out a little too much in contrast with the sleeveless side and the sheer panelling, cut-out neckline and pleats down the front make the entire look pretty garish. Even her hair is failing her here! We do like the pretty gold clutch and the gold hand harness that she’s worn though.

Think of a big dollop of pink custard and you’ll have this look down well enough. Statement rings seemed to be the accessory for the night and we like hers, but nothing else here works for us. She looks like she’s been uncomfortably wrapped in stiff, pink fabric and what’s worse is that she looks like she’s holding a child’s purse!

Admittedly, this is more of a skincare related step. However, without it, the rest of these makeup tricks are going to fall flat. Dry patches and flaky skin around your nose will be highlighted if you apply makeup on top of it, so, start off by using a face scrub. Make sure that you pick a gentle one — after all, you don’t want to make your already tender skin feel worse.

Whatever you do, avoid dark eyeshadows and don’t even think about sporting a smokey eye. Your eyelids are going to be droopy, and wearing dark eyeshadow will only weigh them down further. We suggest skipping the product completely. Instead, line your upper lash line with a black eyeliner and apply a few coats of mascara to open up your eyes. You can also skip your usual kohl pencil and pick a nude eye pencil to line your lower waterline. This will hide any redness and help you look more awake.

FouNDatioN FirSt Even if you don’t apply foundation regularly, we highly recommend keeping a BB cream or foundation handy for days when your skin looks pale or ashy because of your cold. Pour a coin-sized amount on to the back of your hand and use a damp makeup sponge to apply it on to your face. This will help even out your skin tone, give you a dewy complexion and ensure that you don’t look like you’ve piled on too much makeup.

LBD love Everyone owns a LBD and if you aren’t sure how to style it this season, jewelled shoes are your best bet. Also, if you’re still confused about your New Year’s Eve dress, we suggest you opt for this simple, safe combination.

Choose a dusty pink blush to add colour on to your face, especially if the cold has stripped your skin of its natural colour. However, steer clear of corals and bright pinks as they look unnatural. Pick a subtle shade of pink that will give your cheeks a hint of colour and balance out your complexion, especially if you have liberally applied concealer and foundation.

Simple accessories Wearing jewelled shoes with sequinned bags or bracelets can make you look like a showgirl. So, pick subtle accessories, to ensure that your look isn’t over-the-top. Carrying a small clutch or wearing understated earrings is the perfect way to compliment your shoes.

Not literally — that’s actually bad for your health! While sneezing and sniffling through the course of a cold is unavoidable, what you can do, is hide it. To avoid looking like you’ve just dragged yourself out of bed when you step outdoors, Shirley Mistry gives you some makeup tips so that you can look better than you feel atery, bulging eyes, flaky, pale skin and a perpetually red nose — sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Within a few hours of contracting a cold, your face can go from looking dewy and healthy, to becoming a dead give-away of your illness. But, we’re firm believers of the fact that the way you feel reflects on your face — so in order to feel good, you’ve got to look good!

routine while you have a cold is a great idea. Apply it in an inverted triangle shape below both eyes and blend it in to make your face seem brighter and to balance out puffy or watery eyes. Remember to conceal the area around your nose as well, in order to prevent redness from peeking through. Since you will be blowing your nose a lot, applying concealer over your foundation will help make it last longer.

Move over Matte Since your skin is dry and parched, in all likelihood, your lips are going to feel chapped and dry as well. So, instead of reaching out for your favourite matte lipstick, pick a tinted lip balm or a moisturising gloss instead. A matte lipstick will draw attention to your chapped lips, while a lip balm will soothe dry skin, reducing their cracked appearance.

aLia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt has been sporting several pretty dresses off late and we’re getting really fond of her style. The tousled hair and halter neckline is perfect for her youthful look and the minimal accessories (minus that gorgeous statement ring) make this look a winner. The skirt of the dress is a little bulky, but it works with her look.

«

priyaNka chopra

Priyanka is a fan of dangler drop earrings and with her hairstyle and makeup, we love how they look on her. We’re not really sure about this gown though. She looks great, but the side-styled zip ending at the thigh high slit seems unnecessary and her shoes are run-off-the-mill. However, she manages to pull off a red-carpet worthy appearance.

«

kiara aDvaNi

We normally don’t like skirts with too many layers and too much work, but Kiara really stands out in this ethereal gown. For once, the matchy-matchy clutch does not ruin the outfit and the bodice work, although a little much, looks great because of the soft, pastel shade of the dress and sheer panels on the top. We would have preferred if she had let her hair down or kept it in a lose chignon.

Take this for an example — if he’s passing by my desk as he is talking on his phone, and has to note down something, he will pick up a pen from my desk and walk away. Now I wouldn’t mind this, except that his behaviour extends to taking sips from my coffee mug and sometimes, just drinking the entire mug! He’s a great boss, but a little eccentric. I don’t how to deal with him. What do you suggest? — Sujata Verma, andheri dear Sujata, First of all, we must apologise to you because the first time we read about your situation, we laughed — but only a little, we promise!. You seem to have a really eccentric boss and the best way to deal with him is to simply ask for your things. Walk into his cabin and ask whether he has seen your pen. Similarly, the next time you see him drinking coffee, ask for a sip in lieu of the one he took from your mug — but only do this if you’re sure it won’t backfire on you! If you don’t think your boss will appreciate you crossing the line a little, your best option is to ask your colleagues, who would’ve dealt with his eccentricities in the past, for advice. « DIY FAVOURITES

DECOUPAGE COASTERS Whether you want to make them as thoughtful gifts or just spruce up your décor this year, these decoupage coasters are impressive looking and extremely easy to make. Rhea Dhanbhoora explains how they were made materials

Decoupage glue such as modge podge (you can use a mixture of flour and water for a homemade version of glue if you can’t find this); ceramic tiles/ sheets or shaped craft wood or old coasters; paper (decoupage paper works best but you can use gift wrap, maps, pictures, letters — whatever you want!); foam brushes; felt or cork (optional); all-purpose glue (optional); decoupage varnish and a ruler to measure your paper.

to make

buying on

a budget With attractive displays and a slew of never-ending deals and promotions, sticking to your budget when you’re at a supermarket can be difficult. If you identify with this problem, Dev Goswami has some great tips for you

Yes, we know that it’s more convenient to pay by card instead of carrying cash everywhere. However, paying by card doesn’t allow you to keep track of the money that you’re spending. So, instead, carry a fixed amount of cash that corresponds to your budget and use only that money to pay the bill. This will make it easier for you to realise when you’re exceeding your budget.

Use smaller Carts This is a great psychological tip — using a smaller shopping basket or trolley means that you’ll be less likely to buy everything that catches your eye, because after you put in all your essentials, you probably won’t have space in your shopping cart. Of course, this tip only works for when you need to shop only a few items, and not when you’re buying an entire month’s supply.

make a list — and CheCk it twiCe! Santa isn’t the only one who needs to make lists through the year! We often make detailed lists for our partners in order to ensure that they come back from the store with everything we want — apply the same rule to yourself. You can use this trick to help yourself stick to a budget when you

shop. Make sure that you pick up only the items that are on the list and make a conscious effort to avoid everything else. So, if you’re thinking of picking up those new room fresheners, because you saw the buyone-get-one-free tag, remember that there’s a reason why room fresheners aren’t on your list. If you do need a room freshener and forgot to put it on your list, don’t worry about picking it up. However, if you absolutely need to stick to a budget that you’ve planned out in advance, everything you forgot can throw you off course. To ensure that you’re not justifying overspending by picking up things you ‘forgot’ to add on, check your list thoroughly before you leave the house

Compare right Don’t make the mistake of using prices of everyday items such as milk, eggs and flour as a base to compare those between different stores and supermarkets. The difference in prices for these items will usually be negligible. Instead, focus on an exhaustive list of items ranging from snacks and condiments, to soaps, cleaners and other household items, and then find the store that offers the best deal for a majority of those that you are likely to pick up most often.

read labels CarefUlly We’re talking about labels that prominently display various deals and offers. Read them carefully to ensure that you pick up the correct item. For example, a discount on a certain perfume might only be applicable on a 60ml bottle and not on the 150ml one that you were going to put in your basket.

piCk store brands When it comes to flour, spices and grains, several supermarkets have their in-house brand on offer, which are cheaper than other popular brands. They can be a great way to save money, but make sure to try them once or twice to ensure that they are of good quality.

n Cut your paper into the same shape (as close as you can get) as your coasters. To make the process simpler, we chose to keep our wood square. Cut the paper to the exact size (a little smaller is alright) of each coaster. Cut all of it at once so that you don’t mess it up once your hands are dirty. n Remember that this is a messy project, so before you start this step, cover your workspace with an old cloth (the glue will stick to paper, tearing your decoupage paper off the coaster) and then brush the shapes with decoupage glue. n Place the paper carefully in the middle of the shape (you can’t shift it around too much so be very careful with this step) and smoothen it out so as to avoid creating any air bubbles. Once it’s stuck on, wait for ten minutes and then brush (use your foam brush) a layer of glue over the paper, to hold it in place, keeping brush strokes to a minimum to avoid creating a pattern over your design. n Do this repeatedly in two or three coats or until it’s completely stuck and immovable. It should look as though it’s part of a design on the tile and not like paper stuck on top of it. n Apply varnish in a clear coat to avoid air bubbles. Let one layer dry completely before you apply another — we applied three coats to get the look that we wanted. n Cork is difficult to find, but don’t worry, you can use felt (glue it to the bottom with all purpose glue) instead. However, we used the coasters without any base and they worked out just fine.

avoid taking yoUr Children along From asking your children to wheel the cart around, to asking them to stand in the queue while you finish shopping, bringing your children to the supermarket can make shopping easier. But, if you can’t say no when they ask you to buy things that catch their eye, it’s best to avoid taking them along. Shopping on your own is your best bet if you’d like to ensure that you don’t exceed your budget.

Nitesh Juvale | HRM

Cash over Cards

n While this is a very easy DIY project, it does require a little patience. If you’ve got hold of sheets of craft wood, you will have to get them cut. You can do this yourself, but we suggest heading over to a carpenter and asking him to cut it into a few interesting shapes. If you are using ceramic tiles, old coasters or pre-cut wood, skip this step.

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

I was at a party thrown by a close friend at work, last week, where I met ‘Curly,’ one of her husband’s friends... We hit it off immediately! And though we did not spend the entire night glued to each other, there was definitely something!

THE BIG I

Maintaining your independence in a relationship — whether you’re married or dating — is extremely important. Dev Goswami tells you how to ensure that your quest for a stable ‘we’ doesn’t have you losing your identity or independence

T

hat there is no ‘I’ in team is an adage that’s commonly referred to in order to build healthy relationships, whether it’s with your colleagues or with your partner. However, while working in tandem with your partner is healthy for your relationship, becoming too dependent and starting to resemble each other isn’t a good idea. Having your own independence in a relationship is extremely important as well. At the risk of sounding corny, we have to emphasise that the trick to a happy, fulfilling life is to ensure that there’s a balance between your relationship and your individuality. Read on as we bring you tips that will help you to stay independent in your relationship.

Be inDePenDent Yes, we know that this is the point of the story, but it is impossible to be independent unless you make a conscious effort to do so. Expecting your partner to pick you up and drop you wherever you go may be convenient, but it’s an easy way to lose the ability to do things on your

own –— unless you need to for safety of course. Don’t make your partner tag along with you when you go shopping, or when you want to watch a film that he might not be interested in. Being dependent on your partner (or anyone else for that matter) for such things, can lead to situations where you aren’t able to do what you love simply because you can’t find anyone to give you company.

Say no You’re going to a party with your school friends and your partner asks you if he can come along. What do you do? Well, if you value your independence, you need to learn how to say no. Similarly, you also need to learn how to take no for an answer. This will help you stay independent, and will also strengthen your bond with your partner, benefiting your relationship in the long run.

take a Break We don’t mean that you should take a break from your relationship and date

>> Maintaining your individuality is just as important as spending time together other people. We’re talking about a break where you go on a mini-vacation or spend a weekend by yourself. Not only will this rejuvenate you, it will also help boost your confidence and help you realise how easy it is to be independent. And, it should go without saying that while you’re at it, you should handle all the planning and logistics by yourself, without any help from your partner.

a SeParate life One of things that lead to you becoming too dependent on your partner is a shared personal life. If all your friends are his friends as well and if you only indulge in hobbies that you both find appealing, you’re going to have a hard time maintaining your individuality. So, follow your own interests and make sure that you keep up with your hobbies, even if they are not his. A good way to start this is to set a day or two aside during the week where you indulge in activities that please you — all by yourself.

relationship won’t be able to take such a hit. But, I really want to switch things up in my life. What do I do? — Pearl D’souza, Byculla Dear Pearl, It is human tendency to want more out of life. In office, I told Neha, who’s husband’s is Curly’s friend, about our date and I was a little surprised at her and Tanya’s (also a good friend at work) reaction. They started giggling! At first, I thought it was because they were secretly fixing me up at the party... Then Tanya began guffawing...

Draw the line When it comes to things such as maintaining your independence, people often skip over the role that your partner can play in it. A possessive or intrusive boyfriend can make it really difficult for you to have any sort of independence. So, it is important to make the concept of personal space clear from the very beginning of your relationship. Explain that the two of you need to make an effort to ensure that the compromises that you make for your relationship don’t end up hampering your individuality.

« DEar GracE, I HavE a proBlEm... Dear Grace, My boyfriend and I have been in a relationship for almost five years now. While I really love him, I can’t help but feel a lack of purpose and direction in my life. I recently finished my undergraduate studies and want to study further, in another country. I really like him and know that being his date at a party must mean that he’s into me, right?

ahead with it. Try talking to your partner. There are couples who have attempted to pursue a long distance relationship and have succeeded in doing so. So, don’t be intimidated by the risks that surround it. Also, while you’re at it, you should ask him if he’d accompany you. He might want to study further as well. If he doesn’t, then whether to leave or to stay is a decision only you can make. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in

And Neha said... Well, at least someone said yes... God knows he’s been bugging me all of last week for my phone book. Trying his luck with everyone! Ha! Tanya just said no! You are too sweet Meghna! HAHAHAHA!

“So, it turns out that he hadn’t been thinking of me, and didn’t really want me to be his special date. He just wanted not to be stag at this party, because stags don’t get in anywhere! I feel so stupid and now I am not looking forward to it at all. What to do?” — Meghna Ulu a) Cancel the date! Don’t feel bad about ditching him last minute. You already know he has more phone numbers! b) How does it matter?! It’s just a date. Don’t expect too much vis-a-vis a relationship, but go and have fun! Maybe you’ll meet someone who genuinely likes you there! c) Go and make sure he pays for everything. AMMU: Invoking Atal Behari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday appeared to be giving clear signals that it may not be averse to discussions on government formation with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which welcomed the gesture. Mehbooba Mufti, leader of the PDP which has emerged as the single largest party with 28 MLAs in the 87-member Assembly, met Governor N.N. Vohra and later said the “decisive but divided” mandate in the state was both a challenge and opportunity for Prime Minister Modi who has been talking about development. The PDP chief met the Governor in response to his invitation for discussions on government formation while the leaders of the BJP, with 25 MLAs, will meet him today. “For NDA government, it is a big responsibility. For Modi, it is a big responsibility. At a time when manufacturing output has been declining by over 4% (in October) with consumer durables reporting a huge drop of over 35% and motor vehicles segment a fall of 9.8%, bringing these segments into higher excise duty regime will spell a death knell for consumer demand and industrial growth. This is not surely in keeping with the spirit of Make in India. The Make in India’s first priority should be to revive industrial growth through lower cost of production and lower price tag for the consumer so that demand can be revived.

tock market investors became richer by a whopping Rs 28 lakh crore in 2014 as a record market rally boosted the valuation of all listed firms to Rs 98.36 lakh crore at the end of year. This was the fourth consecutive year of rise in investor wealth. The year also saw investor wealth hitting Rs 100 lakh crore mark. In 2014, the benchmark Sensex rose by 6,328.74 points or 30 per cent and recorded a record high of 28,822.37 on November 28. This is the highest annual gain since 2009 when it had rallied by 7,817 points. The 30share gauge ended the year on a positive note at 27,499.42, up 95.88 points. The broader CNX Nifty of the

National Stock Exchange also firmed up by 34.45 points to end at 8,282.70. It has risen by 1,978.7 points or 31.38 per cent for the year 2014. The rise in investor wealth was also on account of the continued rise in the number of listed firms. At present, the total number of listed companies stands at 5,542. Analysts said that Indian stock market saw an excellent year riding high on robust investor sentiment, impressive foreign fund inflow, formation of a new majority government at the Centre and economic reforms. “Markets rode higher on the back of hope of structural reforms driven by a decisive political mandate and improving macro-economic balances. The new government reinforced its position in the elections in

some of the important states and initiated the reforms in a gradual manner including those on FDI norms, direct transfer benefit, diesel de-regulation, labour reforms, coal allocation, ordinance on land acquisition, the ‘Make in India’ initiative,” said Devendra Nevgi, CEO, ZyFin Advisors. In the stock market, TCS continued to remain the most valued firm as its market valuation stands at Rs 5,00,396.24 crore. TCS is followed by ITC, ONGC, RIL and CIL in the top five companies list. In 2014, shares of Tata Motors zoomed 31.8 per cent, ONGC surged 18.22 per cent, TCS gained 17.67 per cent) and ITC firmed up by 14.55 per cent. Foreign investors have infused over USD 16 billion into equities this year.

MFs Pumped In Rs 23,500 Cr Into Stocks By A Business Reporter

M

utual funds pumped in more than Rs 23,500 crore in domestic equities in 2014 mainly on account of rally in stock markets. This was in sharp contrast to net withdrawals of over Rs 21,000 crore in 2013. Fund houses are upbeat about inflows for the next year as equity markets are expected to deliver further. “The next year (2015) will be a very good year for the mutual fund industry,” JP Morgan AMC Managing Director and CEO Nandkumar Surti said. According to the data released by cap-

ital market regulator Sebi, mutual fund (MF) houses infused a net amount of about Rs 23,530 crore in the domestic equities in 2014. Industry experts attributed the inflows in equities to improvement in market sentiments and increased participation from retail investors, primarily due to change in the government at the Centre. The money in equities started coming in from the second half of May, after the announcement of General Election’s verdict, and the momentum has continued till date. Prior to May, mutual funds had been net sellers in the stock market since September last year. MFs were

net buyers of shares worth Rs 1,607 crore in August 2013. “Optimism of investors is one of the main reasons why the industry has seen inflow this year. The new government coming into power with majority on their own gave sense of stability and hope that this will will bring economy back on track,” Quantum AMC CEO Jimmy Patel said. Mutual funds collect money from investors and later invest the same into various market segments including stocks, IPOs (primary market) and bonds. The net inflow in the equity market is in line with the benchmark BSE index Sensex gaining more than 29 per cent in 2014.

‘Make In India’ Promises To Reignite Growth, Says Cyrus Mistry By A Business Reporter

S

eeing opportunities in a challenging environment, Tata group Chairman Cyrus Mistry yesterday said the Modi government’s ‘Make in India’ campaign holds the “promise of re-igniting growth in the years to come”. In his New Year message to the employees of the over USD 100 billion Tata group, Mistry also stressed upon the need for firms of the conglomerate to keep pace with fast evolving technologies and develop a technology roadmap to effectively serve the evolving customer needs in the new age. “Amidst a complex and unpredictable geopolitical environment, we find that new opportunities have emerged, but equally, several challenges persists. In India, recent policy measure and strategic direction defined by the government, especially its ambitious ‘Make in India’ campaign, hold the promise of reigniting growth in the years to come,” he said. Reflecting on the year that has gone by, Mistry said: “Globally, major markets seem to be

This has led to a fall in global commodity markets, which offers both challenges and opportunities, he said“ Highlighting the need for the group firms to be prepared to serve customers in a fast changing environment driven by technological developments, he said: “The customers and the markets we know are evolving. Today, emerging technologies in the digital and physical space are transforming business at a pace never seen before. “We must deepen our understanding in several areas such as digitisation and big data analytics, and develop an innovation and technology roadmap to effectively serve evolving customer needs.” In his letter to nearly 5.82 lakh employees, Mistry said that “keeping with our pioneering spirit that is core to the group, we look to continue to invest in R&D and in the development of

Just For The Markets, But Also The Indian Economy’

By A Business Reporter The “Indian markets have witnessed a buoyant trend that indicates better profit growth prospects for 2015. The Indian markets have outperformed its Asian and global peers. The Sensex is now up over 30%—a whopping 6,000 points this calendar year. Our market remains the hot investment option. And this growth is expected to continue as cyclical, rate-sensitive and investment-oriented stocks find flavour with investors. This seems to be the start of a golden era, not just for the markets, but also the Indian economy. India is the only major country that is projected to see a pickup in growth momentum. The growth cycle moved from slowdown to a recovery mode – last seen in 2009. And the industrial sector is expected to lead this recovery. This may start out gradually, but growth will pick up speed in the coming years. A significant development that could have an impact on India is the dramatic fall in global crude oil prices. India imports nearly 70% of the oil requirement. An over 40% fall in oil prices is good news for inflation. Retail inflation has moderated to 5-6% from double digits last year. Markets expect the economic growth to be higher at 6.57% over the next 3-5 years. Financial savings (at around 7% of GDP) and loan growth (at around 10%) too have bottomed out, and can only head north. Our advice to retail & first time in-

vestors is to buy fundamentally strong stocks or which are part of index (Sensex/Nifty) with an average weightage in it, set a target price and exit once that is reached. For mutual fund investors, our advice is to continue “SIP” schemes and /or they can even invest in vision/growth funds with a horizon of 2 to 3 years as lot to come in the coming year, says Kamlesh Rao, CEO, Kotak Securities” In agreement is Jayant Manglik, President - Retail Distribution, Religare Securities Ltd. According to him, “Markets loved Modi and this saw FIIs pumping in close to $16bn in equities during the current year. The BSE touched new highs in 2014 and are likely to carry this momentum in the coming year too. The caveat, of course, is delivery on domestic policy implementation and relative global economic stability. The government’s focus on increasing retail participation in equity markets should see some clearer guidelines and will be reinforced with continuing optimism. Money from foreign and domestic sources should continue to flow in as everyone will like to get a slice of the India growth story. Rupee has been toggling at 62-64 and that may not necessarily be a bad thing though a steep fall could spook investors for a part of 2015”. “We expect FY15/FY16 earnings growth of ~15% each and the best case scenario of 30,000 for the Sensex in case of a market-friendly budget. Overall the new year looks good with significantly reduced inflation and signs of policy decisions being taken in earnest” he added.

Shammi special for New Year Z

ee Classic is all set to entertain its viewers with back to back movie marathon of the effervescent Shammi Kapoor on New Year’s day. As part of its New Year ppecial programming, viewers can watch Shammi Kapoor’s biggest hits – 'Prince', co-starring Vyjayanthimala, and 'Professor', co-starring Lalita Pawar and Kalpana, today on Zee Classic. Embellished with peppy chartbusters like ‘Badan Pe Sitare Lapete Huye’, 'Prince' (1969) is a charming film about an arrogant prince having a change of heart after living the life of a commoner. The film also boasts of melodious music from legendary duo ShankarJaikishan. Another swinging sixty’s blockbuster 'Professor' (1962) is a hilarious film about a young man inadvertently disguising himself as an elderly professor to meet the employment criteria set by the strict Aunt Lalita Pawar. What follows is an entertaining turn of events of Pritam's double-life as the old, single professor who charms the otherwise tough aunt, and the young man who woos her beautiful niece. Viewers are in for an enjoyable day this New Year with 'Prince' airing at 11.45 am, followed by 'Professor' at 2.45 pm. With a line-up of such captivating movies, Zee Classic invites the viewers to be part of Bollywood's most melodic and sparkling era. So don’t miss out on the festive fervour and tune in today to catch Shammi Kapoor’s greatest hits.

You are making a comeback in fiction shows. Yes. For ten consecutive years I was judging a popular comedy reality show. Then when I got this offer of ‘The Great Indian Family Drama’ I was thrilled because it is not just a sitcom, but also a family drama. I immediately gave my nod. What is the show all about? The show features Nawaab, played by Satish Kaushik, who is a living soul that has never worked a day in his life. He lives in a world of fantastical imaginative ideas. The story revolves around the concept of how Nawaab Saab and the love of his life, Begum Paro, played by me, deal with day-to-day circumstances with humourous quarrels and disagreement as part of their marital life. They also have another family member Sikandar, played by Raj Shandilya, who has written the show, living with them and working for them for years. Sikandar is an integral part of this family and his pranks often lead to hilarious situations in Nawab’s life. He also aspires to become a superstar singer but is never able to leave the family

due to his love for them.

How did you work on your character? I am from UP, now Uttarakhand, and have observed characters like Begum Paro. I can speak the Urdu spoken in those parts. I also know about the lifestyle of the decadent nawabs after seeing films and TV Shows, which helped me a lot while portraying Begum Paro. What was it like working with the cast? Satish and I have been friends for the last 28 years, since we worked in my film ‘Jalwa’ together. Working with him brought back memories and we had a great time shooting for the show. Rauf Lala is one comedian I really admire. Raj Shandilya, of course, is the writer of the show. And Rana Jung Bahadur and Navneet Nishaan are proven artistes. What is your opinion about comedy shows currently on air? Kapil Sharma’s show was excellent, and shows like 'Comedy Ke Superstars' are making the stressed out viewer happy after a hard day’s work. What kind of shows do you personally like to watch? Shows like ‘Big Bang Theory’ and ‘Friends’ are my favourites. 'The Great Indian Family Drama' will hit the tube on January 3 at 9 pm on Sab TV.

TV stars celebrate the

NEW YEAR

Roopal Tyagi (from 'Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke') “My New Year's resolution this year is to take care of my health and keep it as a top priority. For New Year’s Eve, I will either be in Bangalore or in Mumbai depending on my shoot schedule. I would like to wish all my viewers a very Happy New Year! Stay healthy. Stay happy.” Mohit Malik (from 'Doli Armaano Ki') “I have thought quite a bit about my New Year's resolution. I want to work on my daily habits and would try to become an early riser. I want to learn to swim. Last, I want to sing, because it is a really good de-stressor. For New Year’s eve, if things work out, I might be planning a destination holiday abroad that I’m really looking forward to. I’d like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year! Smile and laugh a lot because life is short. So, spread happiness as much as you can!”

Neha Marda (from 'Balika Vadhu') “Every year we celebrate my mother’s birthday, which is on January

1, and New Year together, because of which I’m always in Kolkata with my family. My New Year's resolution would be to work for 12 hours and not more than that. I would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year and a fruitful start with happiness and success. Spread the love!”

Surbhi Jyoti (from 'Qubool Hai') “New Year’s eve is that time of the year where one can sit and introspect what went wrong and how things can be made better in our lives. I believe we should utilise this time to do the same. My brother has recently shifted to Mumbai. I am very happy and excited as this is going to be his first new year in the city with me.”

Ravi Dubey (from ‘Saas Bina Sasural’) I haven’t decided on any New Year's resolution till now, but I will try and be a slightly better individual and eliminate the negatives from my life. I might go to Goa with Sargun and a few friends as I am really looking forward to it. It is a time for celebration, time to cheer and party, but at the same time one shouldn’t lose out on opportunities to help someone in need and make their day too.

TV TATTLE Interesting twist

HE is considered the upholder of justice. So much so that he shot and killed his own psychotic son when he got involved with criminals. But ACP Pradyuman, played by Shivaji Satam, in 'CID' on Sony is in for a huge shock when he sees his own dead son Nakul standing in front of him. Nakul has come back from the dead to seek revenge against his own father. He is now an integral part of an international terrorist gang and is wreaking havoc across the globe. He is responsible for bomb blasts in 15 countries and is continuing the terror trail in Mumbai. As ACP Pradyuman comes face-to-face with his son, Nakul doesn’t even think twice before pulling the trigger on his father and shooting him dead in the middle of the sea.

Iconic sequence

Recently lead actors Priyansh Jora and Sonia Balani, who play Titu and Panchi respectively on Star Plus’ 'Tu Mera Hero', emulated the iconic 'Titanic' scene on screen for a dream sequence. The actors had to watch the particular scene from the Hollywood blockbuster 15 times to get the expressions and pose right and to give the perfect shot. In the show, Panchi is a diehard romantic and Bollywood buff who always dreams of a fairytale love story. She is the perfect daughter and perfect sister. However Panchi falls in love with Titu who is a lazy boy. Sonia Balani says, “I was very shocked when the director told us that we would be doing the 'Titanic' scene for a dream sequence where my character Panchi dreams about Titu.”

Show ends

Colors’ flagship show 'Uttaran' will draw its curtains on January 16, 2015, after six years The show which kicked off as a journey of two friends, Ichcha and Tapasya, belonging to two different socio-economic classes raked in some strong feedback from the viewers. Tina Dutta, who essays the role of Meethi on the show, exclaims, “My experience of working on 'Uttaran' can only be described as awesome! Uttaran was my debut in a lead role on television because of which the show will always remain very close to my heart.”

DHONI LED BY EXAMPLE NOT BY RHETORIC: DRAVID N SPORTS

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 1, 2015

EW DELHI: Lavishing praise on Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has shocked the cricket world by retiring from Tests, former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid said the stumper-batsman would go down as a captain who led "more by example than by rhetoric or by words". "He was a captain I enjoyed playing under," Dravid told 'ESPNcricinfo'. "One of the things I liked about MS was, what you saw was what you got. Very uncomplicated, always led by example. One of the things I really liked about playing under MS was that he never asked you to do anything that he himself didn't do," he explained. Dhoni retired from Test cricket at the end of the third Test against Australia, which ended in a draw yesterday. The retirement was a bolt from the blue given that Dhoni had dropped no hint of such a big decision leading up to the match. Dravid said Dhoni earned the respect of his teammates by setting an example with his own performance. "The reality was he was having to transition a senior group of players and build a younger group who were coming through," Dravid said. "In a sense he was not the most communicative of captains, but he tried to earn your respect by walking the talk. He never took a backward step, and led more by example than by rhetoric or by words. More by actions," he added. Dravid said Dhoni deserves credit for inspiring a whole generation of small-town cricketers. "For someone to come from a small town like Ranchi, to go on and captain

India and play 90 Test matches, to do it the way he has, I think he brought a lot of dignity to the job of captaincy," Dravid said. "He (Dhoni) might not be everyone's cup of tea, but he was his own cup of tea and he led with a lot of success and that can never be taken away from him," Dravid further stated.

In a sense he was not the most communicative of captains, but he tried to earn your respect by walking the talk. He never took a backward step, and led more by example than by rhetoric or by words. More by actions. He might not be everyone's cup of tea, but he was his own cup of tea and he led with a lot of success and that can never be taken away from him.

RAHUL DRAVID ON MS DHONI

"And he's been an inspiration. If there are kids in small towns today dreaming and aspiring for great things, not only in cricket but in various fields, then MS Dhoni has a lot to do with it," he added. Dravid said Dhoni's retirement was a shock to him as well. The former batsman said had the series, which India have already lost by conceding a 2-0 lead to Australia, still

been alive Dhoni could have waited to take a call on his career. "I guess it was unexpected that he would do it in the middle of the series. I expected him to review it at the end of the series, without India playing Test cricket for the next seven or eight months," Dravid said. "Knowing MS, if the series was alive, I don't think he would have taken the decision in the middle of the series, but

having seen that the series was already gone, maybe he felt that if he was going to go, then maybe this was the time to do it, and to give Virat Kohli a Test match in Australia to captain, Wriddhiman Saha another opportunity in a Test match, and to start the process of taking India's Test team forward." Dravid lauded Dhoni's leadership style and called him an attacking captain. "He

was never defensive when captaining in India. When he had spinners, he was always attacking, on turning tracks, he was willing to force the game. It's just overseas, and over the last three or four years, that I just think he maybe felt he didn't have the bowling resources to be able to take 20 wickets, and he found himself, at many stages, always behind the four-ball," Dravid said.

Indian team arrives in Sydney but Dhoni speculation continues By Chetan Narula

S

YDNEY: The Indian cricket team flew in here and largely spent the day indoors even as there was intense speculation over Mahendra Singh Dhoni's decision to quit the Test format with immediate effect, which surprised the cricket fraternity. A day after the BCCI announced Dhoni's retirement from Test cricket, citing strains of playing in all three formats, the Indian team management chose to remain tight-lipped on the development. Dhoni, who himself did not speak about his retirement in the post-match press

conference and the preceding presentation ceremony, travelled with the team but did not interact with the media. The 33-year old Dhoni's retirement came as a bolt from the blue as the Indian captain had not given any hint about his impending decision although pressure was mounting on him to give up Test captaincy in view of his poor overseas track record. The timing of Dhoni's retirement and the manner in which it was announced has triggered widespread speculation over what could have prompted him to take the decision. There is speculation that all is not well in the In-

His decision invited criticism from former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, who

said, "the decision to give up captaincy was right though the decision not to play Test cricket is an incorrect one." "I would be brutally honest that I am surprised by the decision in the middle of the series. Three Tests are over and it was a question of one more. He could have finished it off," Ganguly added. "None of us know whether this decision in the middle of the series could have happened because of an injury, which would have ruled him out of the next Test. He did come into the series with a finger injury and none of us has an idea whether that had become worse," Ganguly said.

Kohli, who scored 169 and 54 in the first and second innings of the justconcluded third Test, is the best-placed Indian batsman in the list with 737 ranking points. Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay are the next best Indian batsmen in the list at 19th and 20th spot after losing two and one place respectively. Ajinkya Rahane, who scored 147 and 48 in the third Test, also made a jump of 15 places to reach 26th spot. Australia captain Steven Smith, who scored a Test best 192 in the first innings, has gained two places to claim fifth spot for the first time in his career. He now trails number-one ranked AB de Villiers, who has regained the top spot from Kumar Sangakkara. Also moving in the right direction are Chris Rogers of Australia (24th, up by four places), Kraigg Brathwaite (37th, up by 11 places), Marlon Samuels (37th, up by seven places) and Dean Elgar (50th, up by 13 places). In the ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers, Umesh Yadav and Mohammad Shami improved eight places each to be placed at the 36th and 38th spot in the list which is still headed by South Africa's Dale Steyn. Australia's Ryan Harris has moved up two places to second following his six wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), while Trent Boult has achieved a best-ever ranking of seventh after rising two places. Boult had figures of three for 25 and four for 100.

ELBOURNE: Not the least bit annoyed with Virat Kohli's aggression both on and off the field, Australian cricket coach Darren Lehmann said the home side is liking the charged up atmosphere created by the newly-appointed Indian captain. Kohli will lead the side in the fourth and final in Sydney starting January 6 after Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced a shock retirement from Test cricket after the drawn third Test here yesterday. India have conceded an unassailable 2-0 lead to Australia in the four-match rubber. When asked if the Aussies had elicited a similar response from Kohli in Melbourne as the Indians got from Mitchell Johnson in Brisbane after sledging him, the Lehmann teased, "Oh we haven't even started with Virat Kohli yet." After the laughter died down, he added in a serious tone, "It has been an interesting series. As long as it stays on the field though, we don't mind. In fact we are happy that both sides are going to play hard cricket. It is pleasing from an Australian point of view because that is how we want to play. But we also want to leave it on the field and not bring it outside." "What transpired was between Kohli and Mitchell Johnson. Dav Whatmore confirmed as new Zimbabwe coach

HARARE: Dav Whatmore has been unveiled as the new Zimbabwe coach with the Australian agreeing to an initial contract that runs until the end of the World Cup early next year. Whatmore, who coached Sri Lanka to the World Cup title in 1996, will take charge of his fourth international side having also led Bangladesh and Pakistan. The Sri Lanka-born 60year-old, who played seven tests for Australia in 1979, believes there is plenty of potential in the Zimbabwe squad. "I know this team, I have seen them beating Pakistan, so the potential is there," Whatmore told reporters on Tuesday. "What we all require is a genuine effort, a duty of care to the employer and a collective effort. There are challenges with every position. Coaching is what I do and I enjoy doing it. That's why I am here." A batting coach will be appointed to assist Whatmore, while incumbent Douglas Hondo will remain as bowling coach. Zimbabwe Cricket and Whatmore will discuss the possible extension of his contract after the World Cup, to be played in Australia and New Zealand from Feb. 14-Mar. 29.

points from four matches to be in the second place behind Karnataka, while Bengal (4) are all set to slip to the bottom of the Group A table. "The outfield was wet and soggy and there were some damp patches in the bowling runup... We can't risk injury so we had to abandon the day's proceedings," Chaturvedi said.

RANJI ROUNDUP

OLKATA: The iconic Eden Gardens' inadequate drainage system once again came to fore when the final day's proceedings in the Ranji Trophy Group A cricket fixture between Mumbai and Bengal was called off without little or no rain in the day.

There was light drizzle in the night -- 0.1mm according to the Met Department -- but it was enough to render the conditions "unplayable" as Bengal were happy to pocket one point after being followed on by Mumbai who return home heads held high with three points.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 1, 2015

There were five inspections in the day and match referee Sunil Chaturvedi took the final call at 1.30pm local time. It was a blessing in disguise for Bengal who were 129 for no loss in their second innings after being followed on, still trailing by 75 runs as a loss was looming large. Mumbai now have 10

Mumbai cricketers Iqbal Abdullah and Siddhesh Lad take a selfie as gloomy weather conditions prevailed during the final day of their Ranji Trophy match against Bengal at Eden Garden in Kolkata on Wednesday.

The local curator however said there was nothing wrong in the drainage system and went on to blame gloomy conditions. "We needed at least two hours of sunshine to make the ground to be ready. But the conditions were overcast and I couldn't help," Mukherjee said. As a matter of fact, the entire ground can be put under the giant cover, something that could have avoided the field being wet but the curator thought otherwise. "Unless there's rain no one covers the entire ground at night," Mukherjee said. In fact, the players had given up hope for the play to start and Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwary was seen in his denims and not in the team jersey as the India hopeful made use of the time discussing batting with Mumbai coach Praveen Amre. Brief Scores: Mumbai 414 drew with Bengal 210 and f/o 129 for no loss (Arindam Das 80 not out, Rohan Banerjee 44 not out). Points Mumbai 3, Bengal 1.

Salgaocar beat Shillong Lajong 2-1 in Fed Cup

VASCO: Salgaocar FC beat Shillong Lajong 2-1 to score their first win in the tournament in a Group B league match of the Hero Federation Cup at Tilak Stadium. Salgaocar scored through Bikash Jairu (58th) and Gurinder Kumar (64th). Shillong Lajong, who were at the receiving end for most part of the match, scored a consolation goal in the injury time through Jacob Lalrawngbawla (90+3). Salgaocar, who lost their first match against Bengaluru FC, have three points from today's win. Shillong Lajong, who suffered their second defeat, are yet to open their account. Salgaocar started promisingly as they looked for an early goal but the rival keeper came out with some good saves to deny Pierre and Duffy early success. The Durand Cup champions Goan side probed more often into the rival box but were frustrated by the rival keeper Vishal Kaith who twice denied Bikash Jairu from taking the lead.
