Velocity 2 provides advanced control of induction, linear & servo motors for high-end automation equipment.

A SIL3 Emergency Stop system can be achieved by using Mentor safety controllers in conjunction with Velocity 2.

Vector is a software program that allows cues to be built and run with a variety of linking options. The amount of cues that can be built and channels that can be controlled are limited only by your imagination.

K2 is Kinesys’ motion control console and employs an intuitive approach to automation programming. The operator uses ‘click and drag’ to move objects on the screen within a 3D world rather than typing positions into a table.

1. Visual Indicators A large indicator displays the status of the Velocity 2 drive.

The whole Velocity 2 range includes an Emergency Stop button next to each local control. The integrated LED indicates the status of the Emergency Stop system.

These indicators provide a quick visual reference to the user of the status of the controller.

2 2. Touchscreen Display The screen shows the device name, current drive position, speed and load, and the date and time. The device name and the date and time may be adjusted from the Settings menu if required.

Detailed diagnostics and feedback are available through additional screens on the display.

3. Fit Up Mode Key Rigging operations are permitted using the Orange key.

This key, together with a username and password, allows the operator to temporarily override some of the safety functions to get the system successfully installed.

4. Local Control Setting the mode key in ‘LOCAL’ activates the Velocity 2 manual mode.

Setting the mode key in ‘OFF’ safely deactivates the drive control. In ‘REM’ the Velocity 2 drive can be controlled remotely via K2 or Vector software.

Velocity 2 provides an advanced entertainment automation solution for closed loop control of induction, linear and servo motors for winches, turntables, elevators and other stage machinery.

The unit incorporates its own position controller allowing it to operate standalone or as part of a larger networked system. Velocity 2 offers unique features and performance in a very compact package. Engineered to deliver power and performance to high-end automation machinery, the highly flexible Velocity 2 offers capacities from 0.75kW to 110kW in a variety of sizes ranging from 4U, to flightcased drives, including custom cabinets and multiple drive systems.

In most applications Velocity 2 offers a complete solution without the need for external ‘regen’ units or ‘braking resistors’. Instead, internal brake resistors and temperature-controlled forced air cooling are included for quiet operation at 100% duty cycle. All drive and interface parameters may be accessed through the incorporated colour touchscreen display, which provides detailed diagnostic information and performance feedback. The Velocity 2 drive also includes manual controls for quick and intuitive local control when required.

The Velocity 2 drive can be controlled by K2 or Vector software packages and interfaces with other Kinesys products for a totally integrated show control system.

SIL or Safety Integrity Level is a rating for a safety function within a piece of equipment. The safety function can be emergency stop, load monitoring, speed monitoring, brake control and so on. Each function can be assigned a different SIL depending on how it is implemented.

SIL ratings range from 1 to 4. 1 is the lowest and might relate to simple and low-risk activities like the emergency stop button for a basic conveyor belt.

SIL4 is the highest rating and relates to activities where failure of safety systems could have catastrophic results such as aviation, nuclear power and so on. The SIL rating that any particular activity requires is determined by the completion of a risk assessment of the application. For flying people or for flying objects over people the most commonly assessed level is SIL3.

Velocity 2 drives implement many of their safety functions to a SIL3 level ensuring that a Velocity 2 drive will impose no limits on its creative use.

Safe Stop (SSx) Safe Stop monitors the sequence of a controlled emergency stop. It does this by comparing the speed change with a predicted speed curve over the time period allowed for the stop function.

SIL3

When connected to a Mentor safety system two different safe-stop functions can be available:

IEC 61508 & IEC EN 61508 Approved

• Safe Stop 1 (SS1) • Safe Stop 2 (SS2) The two stop functions may use different ramp rates as determined by the system risk assessment. SS1 stops motion, disables the drive, and applies the holding brakes. SS2 stops motion but does not disable the VSD or apply the brakes. During the SS2 condition the axis speed is monitored and the system will trip if the speed exceeds zero.

Safe Emergency Limits (SEL)

Safe Emergency Limit can replace the conventional mechanical “ultimate” limit switches, with the additional advantage that the current axis speed and maximum acceleration are taken into account to determine whether the drive will stop motion before the safe emergency limit position is reached.

When the SEL condition is reached the drive will be stopped by an SS1 stop. Motion may only be resumed by resetting the SEL trip, and temporarily overriding SEL to move the axis back into the safe movement zone.

Safe Limited Speed / Safe Limited Acceleration (SLS/SLA) The Safe Limited Speed and Safe Limited Acceleration functions monitor the current axis speed and acceleration (or deceleration) and initiate an SS1 stop if the preset limits are exceeded.

Safe Overload / Safe Underload Safe overload and safe underload compare the value from an analogue load sensor to pre-set upper and lower limits.

When the analogue input exceeds the overload limit an SS1 stop is initiated, and further movement in a forwards (up) direction will be inhibited.

When the analogue input is below the underload limit an SS1 stop will be initiated, and further movement in a reverse (downwards) direction will be inhibited.

A failure of the drive to stop in time following the SS1, or a movement in the wrong direction after the load limit has been reached, will result in a safety system alarm immediately halting all motion.

Safe Up / Safe Down Limit Safe up and down limits can replace the conventional mechanical “end of travel” limits. When a safe up or down limit is reached an SS1 stop will be initiated. After motion has stopped movement in the opposite direction (away from the safe limit) will be allowed.

Safe Brake Control (SBC) Safe Brake Control monitors the operation of the two brake contactors, and tests the operation of the brakes using brake position sensors or current monitoring. Any faults within the SBC monitoring system will result in a safety system alarm immediately halting all motion.

Mentor is a SIL3 safety controller line, comprising a range of SIL3 E-Stop combiners, aggregators and distribution modules, which interface with all the products of the Kinesys range.

Mentor series 2 allows larger systems to be easily created. Safety devices such as emergency stops, dead man’s handles, light beams and safety switches can be easily combined to allow system expansion as the users’ requirements grow.

Vector has a wealth of cue creation and editing features designed to allow the rapid programming of cues. Advanced linking features allow complex cue sequences to be easily constructed while maintaining maximum flexibility over the overall operation of the devices in motion.
