Kindred Sisters “Giving Women a Voice” October 2011

"Gloria: In Her Own Words" At 77, Gloria Steinem is still making news. In early August, Steinem called for a boycott of the upcoming NBC series The Playboy Club because the clubs were demeaning to women. "Clearly The Playboy Club is not going to be accurate. It was the tackiest place on earth. It was not glamorous at all," Steinem told Reuters in an interview promoting her HBO special Gloria: In Her Own Words. Steinem should know, since she went underground as a Bunny in 1963 and wrote an expose of the club's working conditions, which included a requirement for the waitresses to have a pelvic exam and test for VD, even though they were forbidden from touching customers. The article was Steinem's first controversial piece. Almost 50 years later, she's still standing up for the women who had to endure oppressive indignities in order to pay the bills. Whether you know much about Steinem or not, Gloria: In Her Own Words is a must-see. In the hourlong look at Steinem's life, we also get an overview of the women's movement and its leaders — and a reminder of just how important those leaders were in giving women the fundamental rights we now take for granted. Steinem, being the smart, funny and attractive person she is, was able to take the message of equality to places other feminists weren't invited. She was invited to exclusive parties and romantically tied to some of the "most eligible" men around. But she never allowed herself to be dismissed just

because she was beautiful and sexy. The documentary moves from Steinem's early days to the present through news clips, photos and segments of interviews with Phil Donahue, Larry King and others interspersed with a present-day interview. She tap-dances for Barbara Walters and flirts with George Burns. She reflects on her bout with breast cancer and her surprising decision to marry at age 66. The clips are incredible and show as much about how the world has changed as they do about Steinem herself. What seems to be missing, though, is any commentary from Steinem on the state of women's rights today. Perhaps, though, Steinem herself preferred to keep In Her Own Words free of current opinions. As she often tells college audiences, "Don't listen to my advice. Listen to the voice inside you and follow that." Gloria: In Her Own Words premiered on HBO in August. Feminist Foodies Location: “Saboré”

Feminist Foodies recently went to Saboré, a wonderful place in the shops of Tioga. It was truly a fabulous place. Very modern and out-there décor – the bathrooms are done in red alligator skin – with fantastic food. Fifi, Felix, Francine, and Felicia were shown to their table by one of the only drawbacks of the place; the hostesses looked like they were auditioning for Jersey Shore. To reach the table, they crossed a central area highlighted by a new flooring product, Liquid Tiles. So cool. Many a fun minute was spent watching the tiles ooze color as wait staff and patrons moved across them. The rest of the place is done in reds, oranges, and pinks in a circle motif, with splashes of turquoise, bronze, and silver. It was loud, but not so loud you couldn’t hear each other. Conversation was comfortable. The restaurant specializes in Tapas type plates. Our waiter, Eduardo, suggested 2-4 per person. Felicia ordered the Stuffed Olives with Blue Cheese and Caper Aioli. It was good, especially if you love olives. She also tried the Fiocchy with Pears. It came in a Gorganzola sauce and the tanginess of the cheese paired with the sweetness of the pear made for a big hit around the table. Fifi liked her bite so much, she ordered another one to bring home. Francine requested what she later termed “the best Caipirinha ever.” Smooth yet strong enough to sip all evening. It is garnished with a raw sugar cane piece for added flair. She ordered the Beef Empanadas which were as you’d expect - beefy, spicy, and yummy. The spicy aioli was the best part. In keeping with her Latin theme, she also got the Churrasco, and thinly sliced grilled beef drizzled with a Chimichurri sauce. The beef was cooked to perfection, but the sauce could have had a bit more zip to it. Kindred Sisters — October 2011

Fifi ordered a bowl of the Lobster Bisque. Again the best ever. Smooth, creamy, with just a touch of hot sauce and sherry. She also had the New World Carpaccio, which is thinly sliced raw beef, wrapped around cucumber slivers and shoestring potatoes, with a slab of raw tuna on top. The different textures made for a very interesting dish that tasted divine. Fifi’s third dish was the Duck Breast. It was also served thinly sliced with a sherry port wine reduction. The duck was done to a T, with pink centers and crispy skin. Felix started with Kobe Beef Sliders. These minihamburgers, made from the most tender (and expensive) beef in the world, had a fried quail egg on top. Felix thought they were yummy, but Fifi found the texture of the Kobe not at all what she was expecting. Felix also had the Volcano Roll, delicious anywhere and done well here too. Just the right amount of fire and lots of lovely crab. Fifi decided that even though she was stuffed, everything else had been so good she had to try a dessert. She ordered the Ginger Crème Brulee. It did not disappoint. Crusty burnt sugar top, and creamy gingery goodness below. And it was warm! Fifi is reluctant to tell you how often in the past Crème Brulee came to the table ice cold. This one came garnished with fresh berries, and some more burnt, drizzled sugar which the table had to pass around to nibble on. The only other negative is the plethora if shoestring potatoes. They are overly abundant on nearly EVERY dish. But that’s it. With the plates averaging around 10 dollars, it’s not too pricey either. Saboré is a hit. We hope it lasts. Reservations strongly recommended. When you go, order the Fiocchy. You’ll be glad you did.

Wonderland Adventures Capt. Karen Chadwick Notes: Search for the Bounty of the Sea Destination: Pepperfish Keys Florida’s Big Bend The day started out in typical fashion. Some of the passengers were late which was fine because I wasn’t ready anyway. The kids were running around getting underfoot helping out in their special way that makes getting organized take longer than it needs to. Adults dawdled in the shade chatting about things that were irrelevant to our departure. Diving masks, flippers, snorkels, water shoes, collecting bags, check. Fishing poles, license, tackle, pliers, knives, net and bait, check. Towels, sunscreen, cameras (don’t forget the batteries), hats, extra shirt, check. Throw cushion, life jackets, whistle, fire extinguisher, paddles, check. Way too many coolers filled with food and drinks of all types. Whew…perfect…we were still afloat. It would have been easier to put Wal-Mart on a barge and tow it behind us. Finally, we departed and idled out of the channel onto a calm sea under clear skies into low winds. Again, perfect. Everyone was in great spirits as we made our way toward Pepperfish Key, five miles distant. It took the “Priority” a bit longer than usual to cover the miles as she proudly accomplished bearing the maximum number of people and the hefty weight of all of our necessities. At last we reached our destination and the brave scallopers suited up and bailed out onto the sandbar in search of the succulent bivalves. The water cooled almost twenty degrees within a three week span from ninety-two to seventy-four degrees. Refreshing to say the least. The savvy searchers waded around the edges of the grassy patches picking up scallops and all things unrelated. Half a bag of hermit crabs, several left-

Page 8

handed whelks, and the occasional starfish were transported back to the boat for inspection and admiration and brief photo-op before being returned to their aquatic abodes. There were fewer numbers of scallops than in the recent weeks, due I suppose to the cooling temperature of the water. Eventually a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment set in to the minds of the harvesters. Encouraged by a few hunger pangs in their bellies, they returned to the boat to dry off and empty some of the contents of our wellpacked coolers into their anxious mouths. On the way back to the dock we stopped and fished for trout or anything else that came by to take a bite at our bait. The trout were not loaded up where I had planned for them to be but we did manage to land enough to get some healthy competition going over who caught the biggest fish. In my boat age is of no concern and apparently adults don’t mind setting the bar high for the kids by bragging about catching the biggest fish. Set the bar high! (Anita) Fortunately, bragging rights were skewed by the most exciting event of the day when Anita’s daughter caught a 3 ½ foot Bonnet Head Shark. It was a miracle the shark didn’t break off. It certainly had time too after going back and forth across the bow from side to side, getting the line wrapped around other peoples poles, under the boat, and back across the bow - you get the idea. Glenda, my trusty assistant, finally untangled and diffused the panicky mayhem and I scooped the shark up in the net. Well, I thought the moments before were panicky mayhem until I got the thrashing shark into the boat and onto the deck and that’s when the panicking really started. Their reactions could not have been out-done by throwing a live mouse into a circle of gossiping ladies at a Wednesday night church supper. Not that I would know. I’m just saying…anyway. Arms flew up and screams flew out. Everyone shrieked and jumped up on any available surface. Coolers, bow, and seats Kindred Sisters — October 2011

Ellen’s New Book Grand Central Publishing will publish a book by comedian and actress Ellen DeGeneres. The book, not yet titled, will take a look at her life through her humor. It is slated for publication in fall 2011. “I’m excited to be writing another book. I found that between my talk show, American Idol, and my late night blogging, I didn’t have enough ways to express myself,” said DeGeneres. Ellen DeGeneres’ distinctive comic voice has resonated with audiences from her first stand-up comedy appearances through her work today on television, film, and in the literary world. DeGeneres’ hit syndicated talk show, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” is now in its seventh season and has earned 29 Daytime Emmy awards. Additionally, DeGeneres has won 11 People’s Choice Awards. Recently, she took on a new role by joining American Idol as a judge. Her previous books, My Point And I Do Have One and The Funny Thing Is, were both New York Times bestsellers. excerpt from www.daemonsbooks.com

were covered with wet bare feet. Actually, it was a good place for them to be because that shark was really feisty and it could ruin your day by scraping off the top layer of your foot. Not that I would know. After much discussion about whether to keep or release her and a few quick photos, back into the sea she went. At that point everyone figured they had done enough scalloping and after fishing for a while longer, we headed back to the dock. The kids learned how to clean fish and scallops (which will be handy for me the next time they go out) and we stoked up the camp fire and had a nice roughin’ it dinner of pot roast and potatoes with a spicy chili appetizer. A perfect day on the water with full bellies by the fire…ahhh…the wonders of Wonderland. No phones, TV, or computer for just a little while. Perfect. Cheers, Capt. Karen

Home Van Pet Care Project by Elizabeth Howard, Project Coordinator

Our primary mission is to feed the pets of the homeless and hungry people in our community. We are an all volunteer group, so all donations can go to the benefit of the animals. We have several projects in process at this time and volunteers are needed to give fresh ideas, energy, and time. We’re planning a pet food drive that will happen in November and we need several volunteers to plan and carry it out. Please let us know if you can help. Looking toward the future, in order to increase donations of pet food and funds, we’re considering an on-going table at a street market. Such tables need staff so volunteers will also be needed for this. We’re also seeking volunteers to help pick up donations, take pet food to storage areas, prepare food for distribution and then distribute the pet food. Our major distribution time is on Wednesdays at the Downtown Public Library and this has proved to be a compatible venue. We also go to campsites to distribute food and we help with transport of animals and people to clinics for spay/neuter and medical needs. In August and September we were able to help quite a number of dogs who live with homeless people. We will usually hear through people who know us that there are dogs at a camp who need

help. In August we helped Tanya and Dan to have their adult dog neutered and receive vaccinations. A young pup they had adopted was also neutered and vaccinated. At another camp we found a young dog in need of spay and an older dog who needed to be updated on vaccinations. The same at the camp next door. The cats were not neglected, as we continued to provide the food for the Tent City Tribe, as well as for several individual cats of the homeless in campsites around our area. We link with local free and low cost clinics and they are a great asset to the animals. We are also associated with the Home Van, a local organization long known for their care and compassion in meeting the needs of homeless people. Home Van Pet Care needs pet foods for dogs and cats, preferably bags of good quality dry food. We need to increase our supplies with the cooler weather of fall and winter just around the corner, when dogs, cats and people all need to increase their food intake. To make arrangements, contact Elizabeth Howard, Coordinator, at 352-473-9423, holisticliz@hotmail.com for donation site in NE Gainesville or Jan Zak, Volunteer, at 352-3724305, jzak17@yahoo.com for donation site in SW Gainesville and possible pick of larger donations. For general information and to volunteer, contact Coordinator Elizabeth Howard, 352-473-9423, holisticliz@hotmail.com. Financial contributions can be made payable to Home Van Pet Care Project, Inc., and mailed c/o Elizabeth Howard, P.O. Box 14305, Gainesville, FL 32604. You can also donate by Pay Pal on our blog, www.homevanpetcareproject.blogspot.com. All goods and monetary donations are greatly appreciated and tax deductible. Kindred Sisters — October 2011

You make people think harder to do is look around the world and and that scares them. know that colors are for everyone. The thing is, Little Girlfriend, that But Bella, isn’t that silly! How could people have become so narrowyour blue Buzz Lightyear shoes be for minded about what girls can do or boys if colors are for everyone and what girls can like that real girls like Buzz Lightyear is from a movie made you and like my Amelia don’t fit into for all kids and you are a girl standing their little pink boxes. You pop right in those shoes! I think people get out of them. Rip them at the corners. confused about that, because they Knock the top right off. think something is only for boys Dear Bella,

because they never took the time to consider girls. I think people should consider girls.

And you should. There is nothing in this world that is off limits to you. There is no Since you are four years old, you know a lot of stuff, space nor dream nor challenge that you can’t and you know that girls can like or do anything boys conquer. There is no set of rules you must follow, no appropriate way to act. There is no person who can. And boys can like or do anything girls can. holds the right to tell you what to think. You, Bella, Things are kind of silly right now because grown are the great-great-granddaughter of a generation ups keep getting in the way of kids, and some grown ups who are in charge of the companies that of women who fought like heroes to make sure make stuff for kids like toys and clothes, they don’t there were no more pink boxes to stuff little girls into. Somewhere along the way, we forgot those have good imaginations like you and I do. These lessons and grown ups let things get messed up. grown ups try to fit kids into little boxes that are Bella with your blue shoes, we really need girls like labeled “Boy” or “Girl”, and then they only let you. We need you to remind people what real little certain colors or ideas into each box. They do that Page 12

girls are like. We need you to remind people that little girls can do anything. I’ll tell you a secret, and you can tell your mom, but I think if grown ups got out of the way of little girls, little girls would have the space to become so amazing and so powerful the Earth would shake right to it’s core and when the ground moves, all those people who lost their imaginations would fall right over. So Kiddo, next time someone says something to you about something you like, or a color you are wearing or what you look like, just politely remind them they have lost their imaginations. Rude comments will come your way and you just need to brush them away like a bothersome fly. The problem is not you, the problem is them and the limitations they do not challenge. In fact, take a look at all of these girls, just like you, proving them wrong. Take a look at these girls, because you fit right in. You fit right in. Make the ground shake, Baby Girl. Kicking Up Dirt (Bike) by Rainbow Williams

There’s a new TV commercial, where a motocross bike zooms up and brakes, the helmet comes off, and a beautiful young blonde says in sign language: “Welcome to my world, the world of Red Bull! Thanks so much, Ashley Fiolek!” Ashley is a St. Augustine, Florida resident, attended Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, and has been riding since she was 7. Now at 20, she is hitting some big wins and currently leading the overall WMX Class standings. You can keep up with her ranking at www.allsports.com/motocross/series-info and watch the commercial at www.youtube.com/watch? v=g2i2gvZMgw4. She gave an email interview to DRIFT, our local progressive lifestyle magazine, and has over 3000 twitter followers (and growing). Her book, Kicking Up Dirt, was published last year. She is one to watch! And a Florida Gurl too!

Kindred Sisters — October 2011

We Already Passed the E. R. A. by Nancy Breeze "These seats are SO comfortable! No wonder the boys don't want to give them up!" "Don't forget, Nancy, there are actually some females in the Florida Legislature!," Pat Paul reminds me. "Oh look! There's Ellen Hone from Orlando -- up at the podium! What's she doing?" Both women lean back in their soft reclining chairs and turn their attention to the front of the room. Ellen reads from a paper: Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article. Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification. Then she states, "Now we need to vote." The entire group of women from all over Florida rise from their seats to shout, "Aye!" in unison! And the E. R. A. is passed! Not too soon either. There was just time to exit the state house before those 'other representatives' would return from their lunch break. And possibly before the police would be called! Was this a fantasy? A dream? Not really. This was May, 1978, the Mothers Day March on Tallahassee! Donna Burnell and some other women had the idea. They worked on it for months, organizing people, getting sponsorships from local N. O. W., Gainesville Area Women's Center and other groups. Screen Arts had even produced "Mother's Day March for the E. R. A.!" t-shirts. Kindred Sisters — October 2011

Finally convoys of vehicles filled with women and supportive men had spent the day driving from places as far away as Miami, to converge on Tallahassee the night before. When we arrived there was a huge rally. Rosalie Miller, on the megaphone, led us in lots of political cheers! That evening we all met to plan our 'takeover' of the legislature. This action was to be all women -those whose jobs wouldn't be jeopardized by participating. Many of us who worked at the Gainesville Women's Health Center were there. We knew it was serious, when Linda Bassham cautioned us to be sure to have our current driver’s licenses, in case of arrest. Although we were very nervous, entering the legislature as the representatives departed for lunch was unbelievably simple. I guess they thought we were a bunch of tourists! It was surprisingly easy for each one of us to slip into a comfy 'legislator' seat! Once the vote was taken, however, we did not tarry! When we left the capitol we marched to the Governor's office to stage a sit-in. Later, on the evening news, we watched as the announcer proclaimed that the E. R. A. had been PASSED that day in Florida! The follow-up, however, was not so pretty. Hard liners were against the bill, and one Florida legislator, Dempsy Barron, managed to scuttle the ratification attempt altogether. By 1982, when only three more states were needed, time had run out. And since then, some legislatures have rescinded their favorable votes. Maybe a new group of activists in this new century will succeed! Page 19

Another Girl, Another Planet by Bernadette Giacomazzo

They came from outer space, but their emotions are all too human. So begins the tale of Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same, the first feature-length film from director Madeleine Olnek. Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same tracks the adventures and misadventures of three love-lorn aliens from the planet Zots, a tiny orb near Saturn’s rings. Their superiors have banished them to New York City—a place where aliens often go unnoticed—to rid them of their emotions, which are toxic to Zots’ environment. Their mission: get their hearts broken on Earth, which the aliens’ leaders believe will be a piece of cake. Two of the aliens, Zylar (Jackie Monahan), the promiscuous and sassy one, and Barr (Cynthia Kaplan), her codependent and clutchy sidekick, fall into a hapless romance with each other. The third extraterrestrial, Zoinx (Susan Ziegler), becomes enchanted with a shy greeting-card store clerk named Jane (Lisa Haas). Since Jane’s assertiveness-issues therapist has encouraged her to go on more dates, Jane asks Zoinx out—totally unaware that the tall, bald being who speaks only in monotone is a galactic interloper. While the relationships develop, the aliens and Earthling are being tracked by two Men in Black from a certain U.S. security agency. As the agents tail them on visits to Coney Island and coffee houses, Zoinx is caught off guard when she finds herself in love with Jane, and knowing she must return to Zots. Zylar and Barr need to process their lesbian drama before getting back on the ship. Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same is a knowing mash-up of lo-fi romantic comedy and sci-fi B-movie with an Atomic Age pulp twist. But within the kitschy framework, real humanity emerges. "[The film] is a comedy about the romantic despair that one can experience at the thought that there is truly no one out there for them. Why is it so difficult to meet someone who is compatible? Why do we engage in certain prescribed courtship rituals? Focusing on someone who is alien to our culture lets us look at these romantic assumptions in a new way,” Olnek says. A prolific screenwriter and director, Olnek honed her skills in downtown NYC venues with more than 20 produced plays—all comedies—which enjoyed sellout runs. At the time, comedies that focused directly on lesbian themes were unusual, and frequently consigned her work to edgy performance spaces rather than true theaters. Switching to independent film, Olnek studied filmmaking at Columbia University, where she was awarded the William Goldman Screenwriting Fellowship and the Adrienne Shelly Award/Grant for Best Female Director. "Telling stories about romantic love between women often guarantees that you will be working in a distinctly low-budget tradition,” Olnek admits. “I decided to exploit sci-fi as the most successfully realized of the low-budget B-movie genres, and meld it with a kind of a parody/homage to the best/worst ‘earnest lowbudget’ authentic women’s love stories—the kind of movie that hasn’t been seen since Go Fish. The ‘shlocky’ B-movie aspects of the film—shots of handmade tiny spaceships and cheesy special effects—combined with the documentary feel of the footage could come together in a unique combination to create a genre of its own." But she had a more, shall we say, supernatural reason for why she chose that path. "When we were working on the piece in the editing room, I stumbled across an Internet story that a UFO was hovering over Chelsea for an entire day," she said. "Although it was mere blocks from my apartment, and although it was covered on several major networks and newspapers, no one in my building mentioned it. There was something amazing about the synchronicity of the event—it was like the city was telling the story along with me—so of course we had to stick it in the movie." excerpt from www.gomag.com/article/another_girl_another_plan/ Page 20

Lesbian Pioneers Still Fighting for Marriage Equality by Nadine

Ruth Berman and Connie Kurtz got married and they plan on telling everyone including the IRS. The two movement pioneers were plaintiffs in the legal case that paved the way for domestic partnership benefits in New York. Now they intend to fight to ensure their New York marriage is recognized by the Federal government and here in Florida. They've joined an effort called RefuseToLie.org by committing to identify themselves as married on their taxes and other government documents despite laws that tell gay couples to disavow their spouses. The tax law is now so confusing and contradictory when it comes to the treatment of gay married couples that even the IRS says they can’t provide guidance. Ruth and Connie have been longtime Equality Florida supporters and sources of inspiration. They have been the focus of an award-winning documentary called Ruth and

New Program Offers Free Spay/Neuter for Area Pets SNAP (Spay/Neuter Alachua's Pets) is a new program providing free spay/neuter for the pets of low income families in Alachua and surrounding counties. Funded by a grant awarded to Gainesville Pet Rescue by the Florida Animal Fund, SNAP enables GPR to provide the surgery free, for up to 300 pets. Sterilizing these animals will prevent unwanted litters of kittens and puppies that would ultimately be euthanized. Spaying and neutering makes a big difference: Just one unaltered female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in only six years. In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce an incredible 420,000 kittens! "There's angels walking around this earth disguised as people." --- Fannie Flagg in her classic novel "Fried Green Tomatoes." Ann was one of those angels. She was a dedicated Womyn's Words staff volunteer for 10 years; she greeted everyone at the Women's Energy Bank/ Womyn's Words table at Circus McGirkis, Gulfport Womyn's Festival, Ann Southcombe's Kinship With Animals fundraiser, the Amy Boyd/ Fallopian Tubes fundraiser, the WEB yard sale at Bettye Jordan's home, the Female-to-Feline table at Brigit Books street fair, Carnivale Diversite at King of Peace, LIFT luncheons & picnics, and numerous community events. She was part of the unforgettable "Cabin M" group at Robin Tyler's Southern Womyn's Music Festival, volunteering for breakfast kitchen duty with Sunny Neal. She supported local artists and musicians especially the Fallopian Tubes and the late Melody Givins. Her favorite concert was "Sensible Shoes" featuring The Phoenix Women's Voices Rising & No More Silence. This most gentle of women, so giving and welcoming, non-judgmental, perceptive and intelligent, respectful and reverent of nature, so serene in her spirit and spirituality; so quietly courageous - Ann is now at peace from the insidious heartbreak of cancer.

Kindred Sisters — October 2011

“A Parallel Revolution” - The Film I am the director, cinematographer, and editor of “A Parallel Revolution”, a unique documentary telling the story of the lesbian movement from 1975 to 1990 through interviews with lesbians in Canada and the US who contributed to the making of this incredible revolution. To bring this amazing story to the big screen, I still need $20,000. “A Parallel Revolution” will give voice to lesbians who wanted to change the world, who questioned everything, including gender roles, social norms and structures, racism and the oppression of women. Who created women-only spaces, wrote, composed music, made art and staged “happenings”. We need to remember the radical spirit of these women who took control of their lives so others could too. In 2010, I filmed ten interviews in Montréal and more than twenty interviews in the US with provocative lesbian writers and activists, visiting women’s lands in Vermont, Alabama, and Arizona. I have been editing the film since January 2011 and am now preparing the soundtrack. The NFB and Prim (a video production house) will be contributing services. The documentary is scheduled to open in the fall 2012. Your donation—in any amount—will be greatly appreciated and will contribute to the completion of this unique exploration of lesbian culture. • A $250 donation will grant you a DVD copy of the documentary. • With a $500 donation you will be publicly acknowledged in the credits. • With a $1,500 donation you will be credited as a financial partner for the film. Although I cannot provide you with a tax receipt, you will receive my heartfelt thanks and a confirmation of your donation. This fundraising request is open until November 15th. If you know of a foundation or an organization that would like to support this project please let me know! For more information you can contact me at parallelrev@gmail.com. Sincerely, Myriam Fougère

AstroFlash Hard to believe that the autumn winds are finally blowing some cool Libran air around. September's New Libra Moon on the 27 refreshes and draws some much needed balance into the picture for all of us. By the beginning of October we have the Sun, Mercury, Saturn, asteroid Juno and Venus all in Libra. We may find it harder to take action and be decisive because we will always see both sides of the situation; however, we will all be inclined to be more fair and considerate. With Juno and Venus Conjunct on Oct.2 we may be hearing more wedding bells and perhaps even more positive rulings on Gay Marriage. With expansive Jupiter in Venus ruled Taurus, the Goddess of Love will have ample opportunity to pump in some good vibes for our relationships but here's the catch, we must be willing to transform ourselves and our relationships with all the challenging energies from the Outer Planets Uranus and Pluto hammering away subtly and or radically to open our hearts and minds. As the month begins we see Uranus in 2 degrees of Aries and Pluto is 4 degrees of Capricorn making a pretty tight square. This is one of the big energies that has had the world shake, rattle and rolling within and without. Revolution is in the air and the level of political and economic dissatisfaction is reaching a fever pitch at home and abroad. While the average person struggles to put food on the table and a roof over their families heads, the Repugs play the No game even rejecting their own past policies if they come from a Democratic mouth and the Dems are sounding more and more like the Repugs everyday. Is this Libra run amuck? At this point a Third Party would return us to a bi partisan system! By the Full Moon in Aries on Oct. 11 some of that anger and frustration could easily spill over into violence in the streets of some big cities. In ancient times, the Aries Full Moon was called the Blood Moon and it was a time of animal sacrifices as well as a time of blessings the animals. This is a good night to keep your critters indoors and well monitored as they may get feistier and more likely to get in trouble somehow. I personally avoid places where large groups congregate or where people tend to get aggressive or out of control, i.e. bars, stadiums, rough sections of town, etc. The late great Marion Weinstein used to tell us about this on her radio show, Marion's Cauldron on WBAI in NYC. She was so right too because whenever I ignored that caution, I was very sorry. So just passin' it on. Because the Full Arian Moon is in the middle of the week it will be easier to avoid such gatherings. Here at Moonhaven, we usually do a circle for all the Full Moons and we will certainly be sending out prayers for Peace and Healing. Fortunately by this Full Moon, Uranus will be retrograding away from the Pluto Square a bit which will help not inflame the energies further. Full Moons always offer us the ability to blend and transform the opposite energies represented by the Moon and the Sun, in this case, Aries and Libra, the Self and the Other, Independence and Intimacy. We can try to discover just how it could feel to live beyond a world of dualities which is part of what the grand evolution is about. By the 13th Saturn and the Sun will conjoin at 20 degrees of Libra which could bring a bit of heaviness to the day but perhaps more order Page 24

and less chaos. The first part of the month will be all about how to make things fair, not that they will be, and the latter part will likely be shrouded in secrecy as many planets shift into Scorpio. Oct. 26 brings the New Moon into the fixed Pluto-ruled sign of Scorpio. It should be a very intense day because not only are the Sun and Moon in Scorpio but Mercury and Venus are as well. Might be a disruptive or very sexy time because Mars will be squaring Venus that day as well. This will be a great time to look more deeply into all of your motivations and desires. Don't be shy and don’t hide from yourself either. As the month ends, we find ourselves in the Season of the Witch so to speak with Halloween or Samhain coming soon to a neighborhood near you. This is a fave time for me of course and we will have a wonderful circle here at Moonhaven in the arms of the awesome Grandmother Tree. [See Samhain info below] During this time of the year it is said that the Veil is Thin. This means that the space between the worlds of Spirit and the Material Plane is more fluid than solid and we can commune with our ancestors and those on the other side more freely. This is why the custom of dressing up as ghosts became popular. The carved pumpkins originally were held high on poles to light the way by cloaked worshippers moving through the forests. This practice also had good fright value to keep the nosy away from the Witches Circles. Witches and Pagans see this night as New Year's Eve and I used to do that before I even knew of this practice because it always seemed like once I got past Halloween things got more harmonious and so it will be! Have a Blessed Halloween and Samhain. Blessings, Flash Silvermoon Holy Day Special: First Time Clients $5 off your Hour Reading at Flash's office at Moonhaven in Melrose. The Fall is a great time and the Season for a good Tarot Psychic Reading, Astrology Chart, Mystery School Classes, stone healing, flower essence treatment or even a session for your pet, what better time to do something nice for yourself. Call Flash - 352 4752432 - just 20 min east of Gainesville and as close as your telephone if you are farther away - see my website www.flashsilvermoon.com at the Moonmarket to pay for a phone reading. Aries - Let's face it, as long as Uranus is in Aries, I will be the flavor of the month, exciting, provocative, passionate, quirky, independent and oh so unpredictable. I've got plenty of flame in my game plenty for me and you and that's the truth. I am steppin' up to my rightful place of leadership and my overall pace as well. I don't know why I have been spinning my wheels and thoughts on idle but I feel the wind in my wings. Taurus - Jupiter is my good friend presenting me with abundance on all levels. A little more opportunity in the romance department would be sweet and seeing how opposites attract, I am thinking that on the 9th when Venus moves into my opposite sign of Scorpio we could be kicking up our heels or at least making some tidal waves in the water bed. Like the African Love Goddess [Orisha] Oshun, I love all things sweet; the sweet sounds of love and the sweet taste of success! Kindred Sisters — October 2011

Gemini - Feeling a little out of my element these days but the Fall freshness in the air has got my ears all perked up and ready for some mischief or at least a good conversation. I am not fussy, I will take either side of the argument and represent with vigor and persistence. Now that it's not so damn hot I can become my social butterfly self again and flit from one exciting event to the next gotta fly!

Uranus is so irresponsible and I just can't get any respect from that joker. Pluto seems to want to grind me into the earth. OK it's " Let's Make a Deal", Uranus I will shake loose from some of my more uptight conventional ways but Pluto, hands off for a little OK and let's just turn down the volume on the Intensity Button. Constant Catharsis is way too stressful.

Cancer - My pond is either too placid or stirred up like some tsunami. I don't suppose some middle ground could be available anytime soon. I like and resist change as much as the next one but let me request some pleasant changes for awhile if ya please. Meanwhile, back at the cauldron, I am stirring up some potent medicine to offset the planetary wear and tear as well as the toxic manifestations of the powers that have been.

Aquarius - Old Chiron once again in Pisces, is dumping its cosmic waters all over me. There goes my boundaries, my edge, my clarity. I was just getting used to feeling like my old heretical self and I am once again swept up in Woo Woo land. I mean it is relaxing and I feel pleasantly mellow and I guess I could direct my political zeal into saving the waters of the world. Actually not a lot more important than that and I can combine my intellect and intuition on just how to accomplish this task. I like it!

Leo - I know that summer is over but feisty Mars will have me rolling and tumbling like a cub in season while it continues to sojourn in my sign. Ah I can even feel the sun beating down on my back insistently urging me to find my mission and my mate or is it the other way around or maybe my mission is finding my true mate. The heart wants what the heart wants and my heart is full to the brim and ready to give it all to the right cat. Virgo - Is it brain fog or is Chiron holding me under the water til I loosen up my thought processes? I have been so attached to the world's minutia that I rarely get a wide view of the Big Picture long enough to find my place in it. Now it almost feels as though I am being forced to see things another way and I must say that when I just let go and let it happen its quite relaxing. The world will not disappear if I hold the reins a little looser. Libra - Wow, this must be my month and I am going to take every opportunity to socialize and improve my overall ambiance, lots of museums and concerts and dates with those who can enjoy my aesthetic groove. I really love the way so many activities start bustling around now. My mind and my heart are astir with new potential companions. Even my significant other wants to dine out and share some good jazz. Scorpio - Um coming into MY month smooth and slow ready to go deep into the water 'cause that's how I flow. Venus comes sweetly to me on the 9th and three more planets every to days. I like it! There is something so special for me when the leaves start to turn and I find my thoughts turning inward for reflection. However, let me not reflect too long because I do want to enjoy some of the more sensuous pleasures of this season of mystery. Sagittarius - I am on a quest this month for my new life mission. I have some clues but yet I do feel like I am on the edge of some precipice and need to make some leap of faith to some unknowable destination. I don't know why I hesitate; I always like a good mystery or adventure. Perhaps I have gotten too comfortable. I know that I must find the place that feels authentically like my new beginning and without hesitation, Begin. Capricorn - So glad that Uranus is retrograding away from its sparring buddy Pluto. So much easier to deal with them one at a time. Kindred Sisters — October 2011

Pisces - Glad to have you on board Aquarius. I feel the disturbance in our waters deeply and I am putting much of my spirit into correcting the destruction of the life giving fluids for us all. I have to say sometimes its hard to know when I am feeling you, me, or the entire planet. It's much easier to have boundaries when I know that I am working. Speaking of boundaries, the Veil is so thin now that I may be getting some visitors from other dimensions. Hopefully we can ask all of our Ancestors to come help move us through these challenging energetic shifts! Through My Monthly Astroflash, I have endeavored to offer more gender neutral astrology to speak to all sexual preferences and identities. If you know your Rising sign, your personal reading will be more accurate if you read the passage for that sign as well as your Sun sign.
