Shared Reading - Day One Teacher models to students reading the story for enjoyment. Teacher shares excitement through conversations about starting big school.

Before Reading Teacher invites students to look at the front cover of the story. Teacher will ask students to; Look carefully at the front cover Point to the picture on the cover Point to the title of the story Turn and talk - Students think about the picture and turn and talk to a learning partner about by what they think might happen in the story.

Teacher invites a couple of students to share their thinking about what the story might be about.

During Reading Teacher engages in conversations and checks in with the predictions the students made before they read.

After Reading Select students to share their favourite book.

Invite students to bring their favourite story book to school to share with their class.

Make a classroom display of the students favourite books.

Invite students to bring in a photo of them reading their favourite books. These can be used to make a classroom display.

Shared Reading - Lesson Two Focus: I can look at the pictures when reading and talk about the story.

Grade Level: Kindergarten Duration: 10 minutes Objective: By the end of the lesson students will develop their reading skills by looking at the pictures and thinking about the story when reading.

Materials: Large digital Ebook - Clever Kenny Goes to Big School Favourite Part worksheet (Included) Good Readers Anchor Chart (not included) Before Reading Introduction (5 minutes): Begin by gathering the students on the carpet and introduce the lesson by telling the students that good readers look at the picture and think about the story. Today as I read the story I will demonstrate how we use the pictures to help us read.

During Reading Shared Reading (10 minutes): Revisit yesterdays learning, students can identify the picture and the title before reading.

Read the first few pages of the picture book, stopping at each page to discuss the pictures. Ask open-ended questions like, "Who can you see in this picture?" and "What do you think is happening in the picture?"

Continue reading the book to the end, involving the students by asking them to talk about the pictures before reading the words. Reinforce that good readers look at the picture and think about the story when reading.

After Reading At the end of the story discuss the importance of using pictures to help us read. Reinforce that good readers use the pictures to help them read.

Reading Response; After reading the text have students share their favourite part with the class. Student complete a reading response of drawing their favourite part.

When students have recorded their favourite part gather students back and students turn and talk about their favourite part.

Co-construct a good readers anchor chart with students adding that good readers use the pictures to help them read. Add a visual/words to improve student understanding on the anchor chart.

Draw a picture that shows your favourite part of the story.

Partner Talk: Tell your partner about your favourite part of the story Remember to look at your partner when speaking.

Shared Reading Lesson Day 3 & Day 4 - Repeated on Day 4

Lesson Objective: By the end of this shared reading lesson, students will have improved their understanding of good readers point to the words and make it match when reading.

Materials:

Clever Kenny Goes to Big School Ebook (enlarged text displayed on TV) Shared Reading Teacher Pointer Reading Response activity - Kenny is a boy (Provided) Reading Response Activity - Kenny is in bed (Provided) Enlarged display paper or whiteboard with a sentence from the text

Lesson Duration: Approximately 10 minutes Before Reading Introduction: Gather students in a comfortable reading area and introduce the Ebook (Clever Kenny Goes to Big School) Explain that today we will be learning to point to the words and make it match when we are reading.

Teacher adds this to the success criteria before reading. Teacher prepares a visual to add to the success criteria to assist with student understanding.

Explain that today, as the teacher you will be modelling how to point to words in a text and make them match whilst reading. Explain that I will be using my special reading pointer to help us see that I’m pointing to the words and making it match.

Reinforce that good readers point to the words and make them match. Add a visual/words to explain this on the good readers anchor chart.

During Reading Shared Reading Lesson - Model pointing to the words and making it match.

Display Clever Kenny Goes to Big School Ebook on Classroom TV (Enlarged Digital text) so that all students can see the text clearly.

Reinforce previous lesson objectives by asking different students to come out the front and use the special reading pointer to show us the title, picture and where to start reading. Students in the larger group can use a thumbs up to agree or a thumb to the side to show that they disagree. Teacher repeats this process for the first few pages.

Teacher models reading the title of the story.

Teacher begins reading the text aloud pointing to each word as it is read.

Teacher continues this process, modelling pointing to words and making them match as they read the text.

After Reading Teacher reinforces that good readers point to the words and make them match.

Teacher models picking their favourite page in the story.

Teacher orientates students to the page by looking at the picture/discussing what’s happening in this picture before reading the page.

Teacher invites the students to listen and watch as you read the page. Teacher tells the students to look carefully and check if I can point to the words and make them match. After reading the page students identify with a thumbs up if the teacher modelled pointing to the words and making it match. Teacher ensures to point to the words and make it match when modelling to students.

Students complete reading response activity - Kenny is a boy or Kenny is in bed. worksheet. Students have a go at reading the sentence and pointing to the words.

Please note to assist students complete the task it is recommended to cut the words out prior to the lesson.

Objective: To help Kindergarten students integrate their previous learning of looking at the pictures, thinking about the story and pointing to the words when reading.

Materials:

Clever Kenny Goes to Big School Ebook A whiteboard and markers.

Sticky notes.

Playdough (optional).

Reading Response Activity: Draw an event from the beginning of the story and draw a picture of an event at the end of the story. (worksheet included ) Or students can use Playdough to create the scenes.

Lesson Plan 5: Clever Kenny Goes to Big School Duration: Approximately 10- 15 minutes

Before Reading: Gather the students and explain that today they will work on putting all our learning together by looking at the pictures, thinking about the story, pointing to the words, and making connections between the text and pictures.

Revisit good readers' anchor chart and discuss all the things good readers do.

During Reading (10 minutes): Begin by showing the cover of the story. Teacher will select students to locate the title of the story and the picture on the cover. (Previous learning) Read the familiar story aloud to the students, using engaging voices and expressions. Pause occasionally to ask questions like, "What do you remember about this part of the story?" or "What do you think will happen next?"

Teacher models reading each page by thinking aloud about looking at the picture, thinking about the story and pointing to the words and making it match.

Comprehension (10 minutes): After reading, engage the students in an activity that integrates their comprehension skills.

Use sticky notes to cover some words (3 words) in Clever Kenny Goes to Big School.

Ebook. Ask students to predict what the covered words might be based on their knowledge of the story. Encourage students to identify whether they agree/disagree with a thumbs up or thumbs to the side. Read the page together and then reveal the words and discuss if their predictions were correct.

After Reading: Whole class discussion on events that occurred at the beginning of the story and events that occurred at the end of the story. Students complete reading response activity.

Reading Response Activity: Students can use Playdough to create a scene from the beginning and end of the story. Alternatively students can draw an event that occurred at the beginning and end of the story. (worksheet provided)
