Our Team and growing…

Building Regional Capacity through UDP Collaboration

Selected examples •  Houston Land Cover from 1997 through 2016 •  Chris Hakkenberg

•  Curating Built Environment Data Sets •  Kelsey Walker

•  Shining a Light on Crime •  Heather O’Connell and Julia Schedler

•  EMS – Understanding Asthma and Response Time •  Loren Raun and Kathy Ensor

Houston land cover: 1997-2016

Hakkenberg et al. 2017 2016 1997

Goal: •  Characterize spatio-temporal dynamics of land cover change in the greater Houston area between 1997-2016.

Goal: •  Characterize spatio-temporal dynamics of land cover change in the greater Houston area between 1997-2016. •  Thematic resolution: 10 classes

“How” is Houston growing? o  where are farms and forests being converted to urban areas? o  where are urban areas growing denser? o  how fast are these changes occurring?

Kinder UDP Land Cover Products: •  Validated annual classified maps from 1997-2016 at a 30m resolution •  Validated change maps/time series •  Spatially explicit uncertainty estimates

A novel product: •  No land cover classification exists at this level of spatio-temporal detail – Houston is the first in the US! •  Unique algorithm just received ~1M NASA grant •  Novel technologies give rise to a new class of interdisciplinary questions

Curating Built Environment Datasets Kelsey Walker, Kinder Institute for Urban Research

Built Environment Datasets Publicly available data produced by local governments Two varieties of curation Distilling Assembling

Distilling Harris County Appraisal District Data Recent construction Demolition permits New building permits

Distilling Harris County Appraisal District Data Kinder Institute report and interactive map HoustonInFlux.com Collaborations: National Trust for Historic Preservation: Character Score Reinvestment Fund: Market Value Analysis

Assembling Parks Data Overlapping jurisdictions: City of Houston Harris County Houston Independent School District (SPARK Parks) State of Texas Smaller cities

Shining a Light on Crime: Streetlights and Crime in Houston, TX Heather A. O’Connell Julia Schedler

Brighter = Safer? Do more streetlights mean fewer reported crimes?

Streetlight Density

All Reported Crimes

All Reported Crimes

So much to learn… Crime patterns – do they change over time? Health and the local environment – are crime and streetlight density related to physical activity?

EMS Data – What can we learn? Loren Raun and Kathy Ensor

EMS + Fire Response •  Cardiac arrest first responders •  Augmenting the EMS network with response by firemen decreases the overall emergency response time.

Saving lives •  The expedited response time by firemen increases the return of spontaneous circulation of cardiac arrest patients. •  Blue is good!

EMS Data + Air Quality •  GOAL: Reduce frequency of childhood asthma EMS calls by better managing care •  Collaboration with City of Houston and HISD •  Identified the air quality mixture that produces a measurable increase in the frequency of EMS calls for asthma. •  Developed an air quality alert network and readiness plan for actionable days.

Understanding Air Pollution and Asthma NO2 and Ozone matter

Reducing Asthma emergencies •  Map of EMS ambulancetreated asthma attack rate per 100,000 (2004 – 2011) •  Eleven community centers ranked by rate of EMS ambulance-treated asthma attack •  12 out of 248 schools do not have nurses, some located in the high rate region

Pilot program with HISD and Houston Health Department: Example email

UDP The Devil is in the Details •  •  •  •  •

What? Why? Who? How? When?

What is the HOUSTON UDP SYSTEM? ü HIPAA compliant data library focused on Houston •  Geocoded for easy links •  Cleaned & research ready data •  Servers housed at Rice ü Analysis software tools •  Esri ArcGIS, Python, R, SAS, Stata ü User Access •  Virtual Private Network (VPN)/ Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) •  Web portal

The value of Curated Data •  Vetted •  Cleaned and research ready •  Geo-referenced allowing linking across multiple data sets by shared geography •  Regular update schedule •  PUBLISHED and ARCHIVED •  A ONE STOP SHOP….

Digital Object Identifier (DOI) •  A DOI is a unique, registered string for persistent identification of digital content and associated metadata. •  Kinder will pursue minting DOIs for each published dataset through DataCite in collaboration with Fondren Library. Prefix [allocated]

Suffix [chosen by institution]

http://dx.doi.org/10.4683/udp.07.034 URL of DOI Foundation Server

DOI registry

Registrant (Rice University)

Digital Object (UDP dataset identifier)

UDP Users •  The UDP Oversight Committee reviews requests for access to UDP resources including software. •  Level of access provided will meet all federal, state, county and city regulatory requirements. •  Once request is granted, users are provided access to the data directories housing the required data.

Explore what’s available •  A public link will be available for prospective users to explore what data sources are available through the UDP. •  Some public data curated by our team will be publicly available for use with citation by others outside of Rice. •  Census / ACS / HCAD •  As much as we can…

library.rice.edu/gdc gisdata@rice.edu

Public Services at Fondren’s GIS/Data Center GIS Training •  Over 65 instructor-led short courses annually* •  Self-directed training resources

GIS Data •  Access to and referrals for sources of public GIS data

GIS Support and Consulting •  GIS project planning and grant proposal support •  Individual training and assistance with GIS projects* •  Students available for hire for short-term GIS contracts * Requires Friends of Fondren membership

UDP Team Education Outreach •  Introductory: •  Getting started with GIS •  Advanced mapping •  Introductory statistics

•  Advanced •  Introduction to spatial statistics •  Advanced spatial statistics •  Machine learning and modern statistical methods for complex data

Help us, help you… ü Data richness

•  Let’s get the key data sets into the system •  Tell us what is needed & how to get it…we’ll take it from there •  Data integration: what is important to you?
