CRATE GALLERY PRESENTS NOZZLE JAZZ
A solo exhibition by Mar Kristoff
This exhibition and the collection of works within it, have been driven by the traditional philosophy ofTri Hita Karana; the pure desire to harmonise relationships, community and nature. Representing the romantic quality of improvisation found within Jazz, this collection of works convey the essence of who Mar is as an artist; personal memories, introspective thoughts and his spirited personality all collaborated closely with each other to bring you Nozzle Jazz.
The common thread that unifies the entire collection, and even more so, what solidifies Mar as an artist, is his satirical and playful use of airbrushing. Discovered early on through Mar's interest with the graffiti scene, he developed his airbrushing skills during Covid. This was in part his response to the pandemic and the rapid transformations he faced. For Mar, experimenting with airbrushing was driven by a need to feed his visual and emotional language during an otherwise suppressive time.
Adesire for intensely personal expression and emotional authenticity unifies the impulses behind each artwork and thus, this exhibition. Mar invites you to dance with him through Nozzle Jazz, for creating it was indeed an improvised dance of his subconscious.
Mar is an entirely self taught artist.Throughout this collection of works, he has experimented with various materials and subject matters, creating new approaches towards unexpected colour compositions, exaggerated cartoon-like distortions of characters and form, subconscious musings and repurposed magazine clippings.
Mar Kristoff is a Bali based, multidisciplinary visual artist. Mar Kristoff’s work revolves mainly around the belief of “Animism”; where objects, places, creatures and plants possess some sort of spiritual essence.
Mar’s practice extends to him remixing cultural and mythological ideas from his Indonesian roots while also adopting references from western pop culture, his imagination and own personal experiences.

Mar then translates these concepts into his own distinct narrative.

Drawing inspiration from theTony Williams song, this piece, much like Mar’s own interpretation of the song, is a cryptic sentiment to the unapologetic, sometimes unsettling but brave journey to ones self acceptance. The time has come to break free from the confines of familiarity.
Never Tear Us Apart, 2022 80cm x 80cm Acrylic, oil, oil stick and airbrush on canvas Rp. 5,000,000.00 2
This painting provides a poetic rumination of two inner worlds. Driven by a need to bring them into harmony with each other, using chosen media, Mar’s reimagines his eastern and western roots as he remixes traditional figures as well as referencing his relationship with graffiti and pop culture.Acollision of two identities, given space to co-exist as one.
