How to Stand on a Surfboard The idea of this poster is to list the steps of an activity using only one type family, and I get the chance to experience sizes and shapes of a type family. Since it’s about surfing, I use steps to assemble a shape of surfboard and use footprint to show the topic of this poster. This porject is limited to use only black and white so I can focus on the essence of type.

Gig Band Poster

Of Monsters and Men ! In this work, I intent to make a Gig Poster for an indie band and I think of the Iceland band, Of Monsters and Men. As I searching information of the band, they say their music is like telling story through songs and they believe in monster and troll. So I combine these ideas together. The image I’m trying to express is monsters coming out from the band’s story book, and I add some texture on the background which is hand-made by myself with paint.

Book Design NYC Subculture

Four Wheels and No Brakes ! This is an assignment I got at Parsons, we need to find out a subculture in NYC as our topic and design a 8-folded book. With my everyday experience I choose to talk about skateboarding. New York is full of skateboarders and park, I try to talk to skaters and visit skate parks to take photos of them playing skateboards. I capture their movement during jumping or rolling in bowls. Each skaters has their own personality and passion. Through this book, I want to show the beauty of this extreme sports.

Fly High` This is also a series of photos of a jumping skater. This time when editing, I take away backgrounds so people can focus on skater’s physical changing during sliding down the railing.

Movement When they are skating, I attend to take photos in a roll and get a series of photos. After that, I combine photos together to not only demonstrate the movements of skaters but also show the structure of skate parks.

Show the Bottom of Your Board Instead of clothes, artworks on skater’s board is also one of their important accessories. Sometime I even think that the art under skateboards is also an essence of skateboarding! So I ask skaters to show me the bottoms of their boards and come up with this series of photos. I switch the basic color to grayscale but show the original color of their artwork, so people can focus on the beauty that are usually covered.

Book Design Coney Island

Page 1

People may come in big groups or just pair, this wonder land has its own way to fulfill different needs of relaxazation. When I am selecting pictures, I decide that I want to use photos to express the contrast I have experienced in Coney Island. At the end of the book, I write down “People can always find their calm in this chaos land.”

Contrast in Coney Island First, I visit Coney Island to take as many photos as I can, at the same time trying to discover this area. It can be very crowded at the amusement park, on the beach or at Nathan’s Hot Dog. Despite of the chaotic environment, many people still visit Coney Island to relax. I even see an elder couple sitting next to a rollercoaster but still not disturbed by the screaming. Page 2

Into The Wild I am using only font to design this project. I first photograph scattered WILD paper pieces and edit the image in photoshop to express the chaotic atmosphere. Later, I add other title and texture for the final work.

Azalea Festival Every year in our university, we will have the Azalea Festival. This festival is for high school students to attend and get information about their future interested departments. This series of postcards is designed for my department (Biochemical Science and Technology, NTU) as gifts for visited students. Since our department is about microbiology species, I hand draw differnt images of them under microscope and color it in illustrator to show students the beauty of these tiny species.

Neighborhood Event Branding

Sew What ! Garment District This is a big porject I get at Parsons. In this project we have to find a neighborhood in New York and come up with an event and promot it. This project is my first time applying graphic design in different object. I can try different things like folder, water bottle, and even print on fabrics. The massive work could be tiring, but I also get to know that grphic design can apply to anything we want. Just like Paul Rand once said, “Everything is design. Everything! I choose the Garment District where used to be prosperous in 19th century. Since labor and production is cheaper overseas, the neighborhood experienced its decline. Nowadays, this area is still popular for fabric stores. I come up with an event to draw people to experience this fascinating area. At this neighborhood, it has a statue of sewing man and a statue of needle with button. It gives me the inspiration to come up with the name Sew What and combine the logo with the statue it has.

Extraordinary Package

Rusty Washer With the extraordinary packaging assignment, we design package for things that are not normally seen as products in stores I am assigned with an old rusty washer, and it was a mechanical parts. Since it can no longer be applied in machine, I want to bring this washer a second chance to be used. I draw a little story book telling what the washer can still be used for, to let customer realize the second-hand value of this old rusty washer.

Juice Bottle Package

鎎 and Fresh 鎎 means fresh in Mandarin, so I use this word as logo to represent the freshness of juice. Since all the ingredients are fresh and natural, I intent not to put too much decoration on the bottle, and just show customer the original products. This packaging design is simple but direct, and that is how fresh and natural things should be!

Plant Pattern When making pattern, I will draw a single pattern unit and repeat the unit in a certain order. Before coloring, I will first make a grayscale pattern sketch to preview the visual effect of my desigm, and it also helps me figuring out what color combination I want to use for the pattern.
