Well, you didn’t give me exact numbers here. I don’t know how short a little short is, and I don’t know how big your emergency fund is. If you use a little of your emergency fund to round off the 20 percent and then you have an emergency, where are you going to be?

I recommend always having three to six months of expenses set aside for emergencies. If you’ve got $50,000 in your emergency fund and you use $10,000 of it, you’ll be fine. But anything that leaves you with less than three or four months of expenses stashed away would worry me. That’s the way you’ve got to look at it. Just use a little common sense with the numbers.

I’d love for you to put down 20 percent because you’d avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI), which runs about $75 a month per $100,000 borrowed. It costs you a lot of money if you don’t put down 20 percent. You should try to do that if possible, but don’t be irresponsible with your emergency fund in the process.

Your emergency fund, when it’s there, tends to keep emergencies away.

When it’s not there, you have a tendency to attract emergencies and your life starts to sound like a sad country song!

First, thank you for your service. The fact that you have enough integrity to even think about this means you’re a conscientious, honest person. I think you’re going to be okay.

Making and serving coffee is not a proprietary set of information. It’s done all over the world by lots of people, so you’re not violating any ethics by doing that. Now there would definitely be something wrong with you stealing another company’s exact recipes or logo, but I think you already knew that.

There’s nothing wrong with learning how to make different coffee drinks that are made all over the world. Starbucks doesn’t have a corner on that. There are coffeehouses all across America these days, so there’s no ethics breach. Just understand what’s proprietary about a company or a brand, and don’t duplicate that.

Flying the Friendly Skies of United

United Airlines stepped in it when they dragged a reluctant and bleeding volunteer off their plane under the watchful eye of passengers bearing smartphones. Facebookers had an electronic heyday and I too jumped on the bandwagon, but rather than the internet, I scribbled United memes on the flipside of my old campaign signs. Here is the story.

This weekend, while celebrating my 60th birthday, my entire family plus friends, gathered in my back pasture for the inaugural Kerns Killer 5K run.

The 3.1-mile course travels through the sagebrush flats, climbs and descends the butte three times before returning to my hangar. Directly under the redwood sign displaying the course map, I stuck a recycled campaign sign announcing, “Age group winners receive: 1) Complimentary re-run, or 2) Overbooked United Airline flight anywhere in the USA.” Of the 60 or so competitors, none voluntarily collected either prize.

I scattered inspirational and not-so-inspirational repurposed campaign signs around the course, such as on the first major climb where I welcomed everyone to the “United Airlines training camp.” On the second climb, I cheered runners to “Run like a Border Collie, or sit in the pickup and chew on the seatbelts.” Halfway up the final climb my sign read “Suck It Up Buttercup…

United Airlines complaint department motto.” I apologize if I hurt the selfesteem of any United Airlines employee; my words are meant in jest. Suck it up buttercup and this brings me to my point.

United Airlines missed a golden opportunity to celebrate free-market capitalism rather than forcibly removing four passengers from their flight to Kentucky. The company’s action was within the parameters of every ticket’s fine print, but had they put four seats up for auction, four people would have likely jumped ship at $1000 travel vouchers. The law of supply and demand will set a price satisfying all parties, but as it sits now, only the attorneys are smiling.

On Saturday, May 6th, I will be speaking at the Union County GOP political rally in La Grande, Oregon. Air travel to the hinterlands was spotty before United Airlines began tossing passengers. It would take all day to fly there and all day to drive, but unless the trophy wife bloodies my nose and bumps me out of the car, driving is more reliable. There is an old pilot’s adage “time to spare, go by air, but if you have to be there, drive.” United just made it timely.

Phlebotomy program.

Samantha Clawson, the Grants Manager for MSU-Northern, will present a short talk about the development of the Phlebotomy program and its role in meeting needs for allied health professionals in Montana. The four students that will be receiving a certificate of completion and a pin of phlebotomy are Rachel Bartlett, Delaney Beil, Sara Jimison and Deanna Linquist.

These students have completed two semesters of classes online, face-to-face, lab and this last

semester included clinical with the Northern Montana Hospital, Bullhook Community Health Center and Sweet Medical Center. The students completed 100 hours of clinical and 50 successful variety of venipunctures. The students will take a National Certification Exam and will then will hold a certificate as a Certified Phlebotomist, PBT/ASCP.

Hunter Education Class Offered in Glasgow for Adults

A second Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Hunter Education online adult field course has been set for the Glasgow area. The course will be held on Sunday, May 14, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Quonset building at FWP Region 6 Headquarters in Glasgow.

For the online field course, adults must pass the online hunter education course and receive a Field Day Qualifier Certificate. This Field Day Qualifier Certificate and a picture

ID are necessary to obtain entrance into the field course.

This will be the last course before the June 1 drawing deadline for antlerless deer, antlerless elk, and antelope. To register and learn more about the hunter education class offered, please go to the FWP website at www.fwp.mt.gov and look under the “Education” tab.
