There are two types of prolapse conditions in cattle that can occur during the calving season – vaginal and uterine. Vaginal prolapses occur most often before calving. They can be fixed by using a Johnson button or sewn using umbilical tape. Sometimes a rectal prolapse will accompany a vaginal prolapse, too. I believe that the tendency to prolapse vaginally is hereditary. A uterine prolapseposes an emergency situation. It occurs after a cow has calved and the whole womb comes out. It
is necessary to put this tissue in warm water and get help as soon as possible. The womb needs to be reversed like a sock and repositioned back into the cow. Uterine prolapse is not hereditary, it is mechanical. The womb gets contracted or suctioned out. Response time is critical if you have a uterine prolapse. -Dr. B
