COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.

Delivered C.O.D. At times, the days were unending Some days had ended too soon He’d leave for work just before dawn He returned by the light of the moon.

He had ascended the stairs. He gave a loud wrap on the door. He hollered and poked in his head. He entered as he had before.

His van rolled out of the warehouse Where it had been loaded with care Each package was coded and labeled Addresses were printed on there.

He’s into the noisy kitchen, Where this story is gently refined, She turned for a startling moment, No apron she’s standing behind.

His mission that he had accepted He’ll promptly deliver the loads While America waits his deliveries, He’ll handle conditions and roads.

As if lightning had struck in the kitchen, Soap suds flew in the air With the C.O.D., he retreated, He handled the package with care.

These ranches require his service And while he’s doing his everyday chore, He’s treated like one of their family He’ll deliver the goods to their door.

Clothing, it must be an option This lady is totally free She’d been scrubbing the kettles She was getting her vitamin D.

He turned left on a road to a ranch. This driveway is five miles long. Then off in the distance, he spots, An old pickup is coming along.

Her dish soap gives her a promise Grease will stay out of her way Did it adhere to the lightning? Did the recoil shoot her away?

The package is “cash on delivery” Remittance is what he will need, So he stops to chat with the rancher, As his cattle, he’s going to feed.

This cloud of light fluffy bubbles, Adrift like a birthday balloon, Those soapy suds from the water and Dawn, In no way obstructed the moon.

Proceeding as he was directed He motored on up to the house The rancher had told him to enter He would be paid by his spouse.

Footnote: Each week he encounters the rancher. His smirk, to him, is a cancer. But with his wholesome advice, He said always knock twice, Depart if they fail to answer!

He said, “Every appliance is running The doorbell is no way to call Her ear is stuck on a telephone line The radio’s drowning them all.”

Money Talks

By guest contributor Greg Dugdale of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Havre, Montana

NOT A BABY INVESTMENT

With the prices of nursery furniture, sports equipment and the eventual cost of college, new parents are faced with a significant financial challenge. The birth of a baby usually makes a big impact on Mommy’s & Daddy’s lifestyle and the shortage of money can rank right up there with sleep deprivation for the unprepared. The expenses of raising a child from diapers to college loom quite large. The U. S. Department of Agriculture has estimated that a family with an annual income of around $72,600 will spend almost $279,450 to raise a child born in 2008 through age 17. Some items that should become priorities for the new parents are:

For Sale: One week timeshare at Fairmont Hot Springs (Swing Season), $2,000. Call 759-5995. 1-II:3-I

For Sale: 2001 Ford Focus SE 4-door. 63,000 miles. Great condition. $4,200. Call 406-899-7874. 3-I

 BUDGET This is where the scrimping and real savings take place. Eating in restaurants or traveling are no longer a big part of your family’s life. If Mommy returns to work, 10 to 20 percent of your salary can end up going toward childcare. Knowing where your dollars are spent is half the battle.  HEALTH INSURANCE Sufficient coverage is important before you become pregnant! Recent figures for delivery were $6,500 - $11,000 according to a Metropolitan Life Insurance study. An HMO membership can make giving birth and going to the pediatrician more affordable.  LIFE INSURANCE You will need coverage equal to at least six to ten times your annual income to provide for your family’s needs. Disability insurance should not be overlooked and should replace at least sixty percent of your income in the event you are incapacitated. Remember, the bills don’t stop working when you do.  SAVINGS It’s very difficult to start saving early, especially for your child’s college, when under the burden of current costs. But you need to have a short-term emergency fund first (enough to cover your expenses for up to six months) and then get going as soon as possible. Contribute the maximum allowable into tax-deferred, employer-matched retirement vehicles. Then consider putting more away into an IRA. Consult a financial planner about setting up a separate college fund.  WILL Have your will updated or draw up a new one. Name a guardian and an alternate, plus someone to manage your child’s assets. Also, consider placing his or her inheritance in a trust. This is a good tool that is no longer used only by the wealthy. This material was prepared by Raymond James for use by Greg Dugdale, Branch Manager of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Member FINRA/SIPC.

A nimAl AcAdemics

A mini guide to animal health

- by Dr. Roger Baxter Prolapse

There are two types of prolapse conditions in cattle that can occur during the calving season – vaginal and uterine. Vaginal prolapses occur most often before calving. They can be fixed by using a Johnson button or sewn using umbilical tape. Sometimes a rectal prolapse will accompany a vaginal prolapse, too. I believe that the tendency to prolapse vaginally is hereditary. A uterine prolapseposes an emergency situation. It occurs after a cow has calved and the whole womb comes out. It

is necessary to put this tissue in warm water and get help as soon as possible. The womb needs to be reversed like a sock and repositioned back into the cow. Uterine prolapse is not hereditary, it is mechanical. The womb gets contracted or suctioned out. Response time is critical if you have a uterine prolapse. -Dr. B

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:

by Emily Bolles

61st Annual Montana Seed Show The 61st annual Montana Seed Show is on the horizon March 11-13 at the Harlem High School. Known for hosting a fantastic quilt display, art exhibits, vendor booths, and the antique tractor/car show, this weekend is one that locals have been looking forward to! Besides having a wonderful opportunity to display your baking talents, winter’s woodworking accomplishments and the latest art project, the Montana Seed Show is a wonderful place to bump into neighbors, catch up with old friends and find out what’s new in the area. There is still time to pull out your favorite recipe and compete in one of the baking contests, or dust off your favorite antique car for the car show. Everyone is encouraged to participate! Registration Begins Thursday is the big registration day for much of the Seed Show competitions and displays. Vendors will be setting up their commercial booths in the morning hours. Educational booths will be going up as well. This is a great place for clubs and organizations to increase public awareness. The space allotted includes room for a poster-board and a three panel display. Items on display will be open to the public all day throughout the Seed Show. Check with Shirley Brockie to see if there is a spot for your educational project at 353-2716. Woodworkers will also be setting up in the morning hours. There are adult and student events for wood working, and also big and small divisions. Whether you built a bed-frame, a jewelry box, a toy or did some carving over the winter there is a category for you to compete in. Items should not exceed 200 pounds and after the judging competitors may put a sale tag on their item if they wish to sell it. There are premiums for winners in the woodworking events and Dale Klungland is the contact person at 353-2893. The agricultural event participants will be displaying their grains, legumes, grasses and potatoes. There are many divisions of completion including baled hay, chopped hay, silage, etc. If you are interested in displaying a sample of your crop, contact Dean Baker at 353-2736 for more specific information. Another point of interest for Thursday is the wool judging. Wool growers far and wide are invited to bring their fleece to compete. Registration is in the morning from 9:00- 12:30 with the judging beginning at 1:00. There are many categories and the judges often give reasons; I’ve heard this is a very interesting event to watch. Sandra Miller is the contact person for the assorted wool divisions and she can be reached at 357-4121. Thursday Evening Fun Finish up Thursday in one of two ways… either you can dig through your favorite recipes and make 2-3 gallons of chili and bring it down to compete, or you can come with your appetite and help judge the winning batch. The “Chili Cook-off” is determined by people’s choice and the chili makers are free to do most anything to get people to pick their chili. Competitors should check out any rules in the Seed Show book, make 2-3 gallons of chili, bring utensils and be prepared for some fun. There is no entry fee to participate in this event, however pre-registration is required. Contact Kellie Rasmussen for more information at 353-4524.

Friday Happenings The Art show will be setting up on Friday morning and should be open to the public by 10:00 A.M. The artistic abilities in this area are pretty fantastic; this is one part of the weekend fun that should definitely not be missed. The art departments at local schools will set up student displays and local talent is free to rent spaces. There is much to be seen in this department, so plan to spend some time here. Spectators should also note that selected pieces will be auctioned off Friday night at 7:00. Jack Siemens is the person to call if you have art exhibit questions; his number is 3532437. Quilters from around the area have been selecting their finest to display in the Band Room of the high school. Always a favorite, come by and see what people have been designing this winter. There are three divisions of quilts based on size and the judges need everyone’s input for the people’s choice award. Stop by the quilt show to vote for your favorite. The contact person for this department is Ethel Siemens and she can be reached at 353-2437. The quilt show will be open throughout the event. Try your hand at a baking! Pies, breads and cookies have always been a popular attraction. Susan Billmayer encourages everyone to compete in the baked goods division. She points out that the entries are free, they give cash prizes and the proceeds go to the Seed Show fund which keeps the fun going from year to year. Pies should be homemade double crust fruit or berry pies (no package or pre-mixes). There are several bread divisions including homemade white, homemade wheat, and also bread machine categories. For the cookie competition this year, kids should make peanut butter and adults should make butterscotch. Bring a “baker’s dozen” (13). As with the cookies, there are youth and adult divisions of the pie contest as well as the bread. Please bring your baked good in a disposable container and allow it time to cool at home. Check the Seed Show book for more information and guidelines. Some contact information--Pies: Vicki Niederegger 357-2811 or Elsie Bertelsen 353-2708; Breads: Karolee Cronk 353-2874; Cookies: Lorrie Owens 3532324. Health Fair is Back Friday and Saturday mornings from 6:30-10:00am, a Health Fair will be conducted by Western Health Screening. The company itself is out of Billings and many of our local health care professionals will be available to help. $30.00 is the base price for screenings and there are a variety of tests that they can run on the sample. Be sure to fast the night before, and consult a Seed Show book or give Shawna Billmayer a call if you have questions about the Health Fair at 379-2520.

FFA makes a presence FFA students will have a booth this year. John Schneider, FFA Coach from Turner commented, “I like the Seed Show because it gets the kids out in the public talking to people”. He talked about benefits of bringing the kids down every year to participate in this local agricultural event. While we toured the shop and checked out projects he showed me a few items they’ll be selling. From napkin holders, book ends and outdoor planters, there were a lot of fun, original gift ideas. Stop by their booth to check out some creative handmade projects for sale, meet the kids, and visit about their most recent FFA trip to Malta. This year they will be raffling off a few projects including a rocking Adirondack chair, a barn wood planter and a selection of metal work. These projects are student made and the proceeds benefit the Big Flat FFA. They’re also selling raffle tickets on Torgerson’s New Holland Boomer Tractor that we’ve been hearing so much about. The drawing will be held at the state convention toward the end of March so this will be one of the last opportunities to have a chance at winning a fabulous tractor or winning $25,000 cash, winner’s choice. Stop by and visit with the Big Flat FFA for more information and a chance to win! Banquet Entertainment The “Singing Sons of Beaches” are the entertainment scheduled for this year’s banquet. They appear to be their own brand of comedy-based musical entertainment. Talented vocals, witty lyrics and skilled acoustics are some their best skills. I understand they enjoy audience participation, and laughter is on the agenda, so be sure to attend the banquet and see for yourself. Tickets are for sale in advance or at the door. There isn’t room in this article to talk about everything the Montana Seed Show has to offer this year. Between the Antique Tractor/Car/Model/Toy show where the people pick their favorites to the Women’s Interest guest speaker Sondra Ashton, a local with a flair for vintage furniture, theatre and community involvement; the “Hands-on-History” workshop for kids where they’ll get to make ice cream in a bag and lizard necklaces among other exciting things; to the pancake supper served by Harlem’s Vo-Ag students, I can sum it all up by saying that there is something for everyone in Harlem, Montana from March 11-13th. I’ll see ya there!

God and the Scientist.

God is sitting in heaven when a scientist says to him, “Lord, we don’t need you anymore. Science has finally figured out a way to create life out of nothing. In other words, we can no do what you did in the beginning.” “Is that so? Tell me,” replies God. “Well,” says the scientist, “we can take dirt and form it into your likeness and breathe life into it, thus creating man.” “Well, that’s interesting. Show me.” So the scientist bends down to the earth and starts to mold the soil. “Oh no, no, no,” interrupts God. “Get your own dirt.”
