For this proposal, the author is going to discuss how she will contribute her ideas for creating and advertising an upcoming a unique lipstick brand

VISION OF THE DESIGNER For this project, the author is going to apply her creative and artistic vision into creating and advertising a whole range of unique and new brand The aim is to designing a lipstick which will stand out between the other cosmetic or lipstick brands.

Therefore to advertise this new range in a way that the concept is easy to understand and will attract both female and male consumers.

Designer should create the complete look for the brand such as the name, logo, packaging, publicity and etc. and must consider if they would work well together.

INTRODUCTION Kimiya cosmetics, is the new and up coming make up brand inspired by the latest make up trends on social media.

This will also helps the customers to have a refine extra edgy and sharp looking lips as they would have been photoshopped!

I have started designing and producing range of incredible lipsticks with soft and matte texture that will smoothly go on lips, without leaving them dry, with a Consistency that is ultra long lasting and what I claims it to be also “kiss proof”.

I will be considering to advertising my new products mostly online, where I believes can create a platform for making audience my customers.

This incredible new lipstick is designed to be suitable for all ages, by offering variety of colours that will suit almost all skin tones!

The idea behind the lipstick was to create products with shades that will be universal.

Kimiya lipsticks have been inspired by the latest trend within the make up industry called “contouring” simply to add light and shade where needed to create an illusion of a fuller lips, and will as it is a double side lipstick, coming with a concealer along side.

The name of the brand is the my name which in today industry many makeup artists name their brand after their name.

Sinse I am Iranian, I named my brand after my name, as in Farsi it means “unique” and since the aim for producing this lipsticks was uniqueness I found it the best choice.

However, before getting into details about the lipsticks, lets talk about were the idea about the brand and its logo came from.

G E T T ING IN S PIR AT IO N S

RESEARCH I needed to see what makes a cosmetic brand’s logo different to other logos and how successful companies represent the image of their brand with their logo.

So I took my camera and went in few shopping stores that provide beauty sections.

Debenhams, John Lewis, Bentalls, Harrods, Selfidges and etc. everything about the counters and the way they were displaying their merchandise were mostly the same in all of the stores.

The big difference was the size of the signs that were displayed, and that seems to be the first rule in making a logo for beauty company, I noticed that it should be strong, flexible and easy in communicating the message where ever it would be mount in a way that you will not even feel the difference between different branches.

Second important thing that I found interesting was how most of the companies name were taken after their founder like Coco Chanel, Laura Mercier, Charlotte Tillbury and many others that made me sure about the name I have chosen for my personal brand.

And last but not least was the design of the logos.

S FROM OTHER BRANDS

In makeup industry you would see similarity a lot of times, when a new product get famous, trendy and successful in selling, that is when other brands start to notice it and would try to make a improve version of that item to attract new customers for their brand.

For instance, there are more than hundred different perfumes from different companies that has about 90% similar ingredients and were made one after the other.

And there is same situation when you take a closer look to their brand identity, logo!

Mainly all of the logos that I noticed were the name of the company written with a beautiful typeface and in some there will also be a small symbol from the company’s name means, produce or what they have been known as.

For instance Chanel logo is one normal C and one horizontal C as the name of the founder was Coco Chanel and even though the brand does not even include her first name in it anymore.

These were my main inspirations in designing my logo for Kimiya Cosmetics.

K I M I YA M A S T E R L O G O T Y P E The Kimiya’s logo is made up of two elements - A girl face with curved lips and a K which is the initial of the name.

Under no circumstances should the identity be amended or altered in any way.

THE EXCLUSION ZONE The importance of the exclusion zone is that it guarantees an amount of clear space for the identity and so prevents any visual interference.

The exclusion zone is clearly shown opposite. The black outline with white background is the only clear space that should be around the logo.

MINIMUM SIZE The Kimiyas logo has excellent legibility, however to ensure the best possible reproduction, the identity should not, wherever possible, be reproduced smaller than the size shown.

FLEXIBILITY AND COLOURS

PROCESS As a makeup artist, influence surrounds me at work. When working on my client’s makeup, I collect ideas from the products used or the basic wants and needs from my customer.

So, when merchandise does not fill the satisfaction of clients, I begin to casually draft out new products (mentally) which resolve the problem.

One common problem that had been highly ranted about (usually on social media) was the inconvenience caused by not having the ‘full access’ to sculpting your makeup properly.

This would make women (or general makeup users) start to lack confidence or unintentionally lose trust with the brands they used most. Since I had dilemmas as well, I felt sympathy with what people needed to help give control over their makeup.

I started to research to see if any brands had took on this issue, but surprisingly none had.

So I started to try and come up with an new and exciting idea.

I knew lipstick is an extremely successful product on the market at the moment but I wanted to try and improve its structure somehow. When we do a complete and full make up for what we call glam, in order to make an extra beautiful and shaped up lips we use concealer around the edges of lips to make it look like it has almost been edited.

We also use concealer as a primer for the lips when we want to reshape it or make them look bigger. That’s how I found them a perfect match to be combined in one product and I started to sketch few packaging idea.

CR E AT IO N I wanted to design something that was never experimented before. Even very good lipstick brands, have basic designs/patterns and very simple packaging which has been overused by all companies.

My desire was to make a change for my product, with using a more detailed pattern followed by very vibrant colours (to attract customers.)

I tried sketching and developing different styles, but they were not as affective as the twist tube designs; and so, this turned out to be the sketch I was going to develop my product with.

As we have 3D printers in the university, I took the opportunity and made my sketch (which is for the lid of the lipstick) printed in a 3D form.

I tried to make my packaging give the impression of class and luxury so customers (shopping in the market) would be interested in my product more than others; this is because of how it differs from drugstore makeup (which is what customers would usually shop for considering the cheap prices that they would have.)

This so people who do not use makeup (such as some men) would be more familiar and secure with the product as they do not know the difference between many products and when they would be buying gifts for someone who is special to them and are struggle in choosing.

Everyone can feel confident with this product as it is original and provides class which would please their loved ones.

These lipkits varies as I have took on a brand new idea (which resolves most customers needs) with the most attractive packaging. From the range of the most trended lipsticks. I have been inspired by their vibrant and chic colours.

Nowadays in fashion industry, ombre colours are the most popular as most famous designers have began to use them in their designs.

Ombre is when different shades of one colour are used in specific order which gives the ‘fading effect’.

So many ranges of hair dyes and even lipsticks and shoes now use ombre colours as most customers have now took a deep interest in them.

In the end, this was the base of my idea and As makeup is what people think of as ‘art’, also the inspiration of creating my double I wanted my product to be very artistic and sided concealer and lipstick. make all genders feel comfortable with using it.

TESTING COLOURS WITH ACTUAL MAKEUP

3D PRINTING I picked up on the techniques of other brands on social media, I decided to start the process of creating my own product.

My aim was to design a basic but eyecatching pattern which would interest bloggers as it has a brand new impact on packaging.

I designed a replication of my product and used the most common features that would attract a customer.

The problem with the 3D model was that I could not print it in the size I was aiming for, and the support bedding that was attached to it would not completely come off from the lipstick because of its twisting shape, also the logo wouldn’t really show itself on the lid as.

I was trying to testing out a shape that I wanted it to be unique and never seen before. I used a vibrant pink and a beige gold ombre effect to colour the 3D model which I printed with a 3D printer to grab attention from the customer.

Therefore I find my 3D printing a failure.

However, It helped me with the idea for my poster, and I am happy that I tested it.

I wanted to give my product a character and to also find a new subject for the series of posters I was aiming to make, and also since this design was going to be concept design.

I found it more relevant to create a character instead of using a model for the poster.

My main inspiration in designing this character was La Petite Robe Noire animation from Guerlain and also Pore Professional from Benefit Cosmetics.

Both of these characters are presenting their item, one of them is looking more like comic book sketches and the other one mostly like a quick fashion drawings.

I tried to keep the shape of my character’s who I assume to call Miss.Edgy (as I wanted her to be the someone who represent my product) the same shape as the actual lipstick as I actually got the idea of creating her from.

After few sketches I took my design in Adobe illustrator and Photoshop and tried to make the lines look more even and realistic (the first picture from right side) and that helped me to design two other posters to complete the series I wanted to make (which you can see in next pages.)

However, when I coloured her up in the colours that were influenced from the lipstick and the concealer, she looked more like a Disney character instead of a face for my brand.

So I assume that turned out as a fail but I would try to consider to improve the way I sketched or coloured her in future.

DESIGNING THE COUNTER As a makeup artist, when I am at work, my surroundings are mostly counters for varieties of makeup.

One of my favourite types are the temporary booths with selections to showcase a specific line of newly launched products.

In my opinion, this makes that collection look very important and special; this grabs the customers attention.

The cause of this is because customers, who use beauty products regularly, are waiting for new products to experiment and to quote on.

Originally, my goal was to create a similar look to other popular counters.

But, as I did not have an actual counter, I took a few pictures of Guerlain counters.

I attempted to recreate my desired counter

by Photoshop to imitate what I would create if I had the resources (such as an available counter) in the future launch of my product.

THE KEY IS THE EMPLOYEES As I was interested and curious in these types of launchings, I noticed that when a counter is created specifically for a collection.

The focus of that brand/counter would be their new launch of products.

Because of this, employees, who work in that counter, would advertise their new product as it would be their advantage to gaining sales.

One of the most important things, which changes regularly.

Is the variety of clothing/uniforms set for employees.

Usually, t-shirts would be the clothing that would have the pictures and brief details for their new launch (including logos.)

This is advantaged me to having the idea of designing new t-shirts; for all employees so they can represent the image of the new collections for customers to notice even quicker.

S O CI A L M EDI A’S P OW E R As the idea for this project had initially been based on social media’s popular companies, my brand couldn’t have progressed if I had not made an online campaign.

Nowadays, the most famous social media who are known for advertising and publishing businesses are: Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and Facebook.

The main reason for Instagram’s sudden burst of fame and popularity is because of Mark Zuckerbag (founder of Facebook.)

After two years of Instagram’s official release, Zuckerberg donated a large amount towards it and became the co-owner of the company.

Instagram’s fame is now raising by each day, even though people may only be limited to posting pictures and videos (with time limits) A huge population loves this app because of the communication it gives them for themselves and their friends.

This company has also added new abilities and small changes to benefit their trend.

This is such as Instagram’s well known mechanic of a variety of effects to personalise your photos and videos; this has been a huge success for the app.

One of the new mechanics and technicalities to broadcast that has been added is the use of sponsors.

This will benefit both Instagram and the brand (which sponsors) as they both receive attention and publicity from the posts.

When a new: product, movie or even song is in the sales markets, (if sponsoring) they will automatically be shown in someone’s feed.

With advertisements videos, this grabs attention and links the user to the company’s Instagram or official website.

Snapchat, has also picked up on these techniques.

Though, Snapchat creators have combined both effects and advertisement into one technique.

This is when a regular person, who would be browsing on snapchat, accesses the ‘face ability’ and instantly sees the logo of the sponsor on their choice of effect. This brings raises of money for the company and also recognition for the sponsor.

I tried to recreate an effect with this mechanic as if I was advertising My on LipKit. I chose one of my basic shades - from my collection and simply tried to show how the LipKit would affect your lips and the result of the use of it.

IN S TAG R A M’S S P O N S O RS HIP Websites are a really good method to sell your products. Especially in this generation as most people are too occupied to actually visit shopping centres.

Also, the main reason for this is that the system of online shopping has been created.

Many brands have websites so they do not have to pay fees for the complications of a store.

However, for your business to branch of successfully you would need a well known platform to gain attention.

If your brand is properly introduced to that customer, then they shall be interested in browsing your brand and varieties of your products; this results to them visiting your online shop/website.

As mentioned above, Instagram has been hugely successful in broadcasting publicity.

My desire was to get advantage of this platform to attract a new audience to my upcoming: products, collections and websites.

So, I created @kimiyacosmetics (on Instsgram) and like many other successful beauty pages such as: Huda Beauty and Lily Ghalichi, I began to share useful tips and tricks from other accounts.

When I felt I had enough followers and an interested audience (which were gaining me views and likes), I started to advertise my PhotoShopped LipKit. I was also considering the idea of how sponsorships (with Instagram) can help broadcast my product and brand.

Therefore, I designed a mock up sponsor to plan out how the advertisements would benefit me; this is so I would have a better knowledge when I invest into a partnership.

CONCLUSION Now in the modern times, companies are just focusing on a single product (for example lipsticks) and are still gaining fame from it.

This is because of the new advanced technology and social medias which allow us to browse through different brands and have a variety of choice; whereas before, in the cosmetic market, big brands like: Guerlain, Tom Ford and Elizabeth Arden could not only focus on one specific area of beauty.

Since they had less updated mechanics, they could not have the full access to internet. This would mean that they would have to spend time throughout years and develop new counters and shops (which would cost high in price) to be able to interact and attract attention of customers.

For example, Elizabeth Arden (which is created in New York), has expanded their branches to the UK and to successful shopping centres such as Harrods.

The centre’s website now mentions them, and have began to now use the modern techniques of advertisement for their sponsors and partners.

The great expansion of Elizabeth Arden can be shown as it was created in New York 1910, and it has now spread worldwide.

More popular brands, such as Kylie Cosmetics, use specific techniques to gain attention.

For example, one of the most used is giveaways which result to publicity. As a customer, you would want to win new cosmetics for free, and so you would advertise the page without knowing the publicity you are giving them.

Also, new companies can now create online shops which results to them having an advantage of not having to pay the costs of new counters and shops in different areas.

This is because the internet is used worldwide and provides efficiency and reliability for customers; this creates online shopping.

The difference between the generations are mostly caused because of the internet and social media which have gave benefit to many new companies, so this can also benefit my product. and therefore I am working on @KimiyaCosmetics page on instagram and also on www.kimiyacosmetics.com website to help the brand in pubilicity.
