We have prepared this quick guide for you: Ensure you have reserved adequate parking at both the collection and delivery addresses. This is essential to avoid disruption to your removal company and new neighbours.

Explain and label any items that are not to be taken by your movers. Make sure you have left spare keys and instructions for the heating, alarms or any other appliances you are leaving for your old property. At the delivery address you will be required to direct the movers to place items where you want them.

Out with the old in with the new So now you have moved in to your lovely new home, perhaps it’s time to get rid of some of your items that have been around you for a long while now!

Label rooms to make reference to the parts of your new home easier. Refer to your floor plan and give a copy to the removal company. Plan where everything will go in your new home.

Arrange quotations and discuss your move with a local professionals for work you need doing. Members of associations have to abide by strict codes of conduct.

Remember that the cheapest quote is not always the best one to choose.

Energy Performance Certificate Explained The EPC rates the home's performance in terms of energy use per square metre of floor area, energy efficiency based on fuel costs, and environmental impact based on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. This provides an energy efficiency rating and an environmental impact (CO2) rating.

There are seven bands for both of these ratings, from A to G. The energy efficiency rating is colour-coded from green to red, with the green end of the scale indicating that the home is very energy efficient, with lower running costs, and the red end of the scale indicating it is not energy efficient and has higher running costs.

There is also a numerical rating from 1 - 100. The bigger the number the more energy efficient the home is and the lower the fuel bills will be.

The environmental impact rating is colour-coded from blue to grey, signifying 'very environmentally friendly - lower CO2 emissions' at the blue end of the scale through to 'not environmentally friendly - higher CO2 emissions' at the grey end.

Again, there is a numerical rating, from 1 - 100, and the bigger the number, the less impact the house has on the environment.

Estimated fuel costs The EPC assessor uses standardised assumptions about the home's occupancy, heating patterns and geographical location to construct a table that indicates how much it will cost to provide lighting, heating and hot water to this dwelling.

The table sets out the current energy use alongside the potential use if a range of recommendations are followed. The same is done for carbon dioxide emissions.

Costs are listed for lighting, heating and hot water - again, there is a figure for the current and potential cost, showing how much could be saved in cash terms.

If you are scrutinising an EPC, always check the date the certificate was issued, because fuel prices can increase over time.

Inc. VAT Having provided details of actual and potential Homezone Solutions energy use and cost outlay, the EPC provides a 01543 496877 summary of the home's energy performancerelated features. These include walls, roof, floor, windows, main heating, heating controls, secondary heating (if applicable), hot water and lighting.

Each element is assessed against the following scale: Very poor/Poor/Average/Good/Very good. So, for example, your wall might be described as: Cavity wall, as built (no insulation). It would then probably be described as 'poor' for its performance in terms of both energy efficiency and environmental impact. A pitched roof with 250mm loft insulation, however, might warrant being described as 'good'.

If there was low energy lighting in 75% of fixed outlets, this would rank as 'very good' by both measures.

After taking all the individual ratings into account, the assessor would decide the home's overall energy efficiency and environmental impact ratings as shown in the colour-coded charts.

EPC recommendations The EPC provides a list of suggested measures to achieve cost effective improvements to performance ratings. The table outlines the typical savings per year and the potential performance ratings after the improvements have been made. The improvements are divided into 'lower cost measures' of up to £500 and 'higher cost measures' for larger amounts.

So, for example, low cost measures such as fitting cavity wall insulation might achieve a typical annual saving of over £400, while installing low energy lighting in all fixed outlets would deliver a saving of over £11. High cost measures might include fitting a hot water cylinder thermostat or replacing an old boiler with a more efficient model.

Further suggestions - for example, fitting double glazing and solar heating panels - are included for those aiming for the highest possible standards for their home.

Moving home is often quoted as being one of the most stressful experiences we ever go through in our lives. The whole process of packing up our belongings, leaving our home and moving to pastures new is bad enough - add to that the fact that we have to entrust our possessions and their transport to complete strangers and it's no wonder our stress levels soar!

The problem is we don't tend to move often enough in our lives to make it a process we get used to. We're generally all novices when it comes to moving and it shows! But, like any process, moving is all about being smart and knowing what you're doing.

Choosing a good moving company is difficult. We've all heard horror stories from friends and families about disreputable companies and it's vital to sort the good from the bad as soon as you can. Wherever you live, you can guarantee that there will be various moving companies just waiting to help you out. Your hardest task is choosing one that's right for you - it's vital that you get this choice right. Getting it wrong can cost you time, money and heartache. Choosing a moving company is very much an individual choice and your decision should be tailored to your actual needs.

Nowadays, moving companies can offer you a wide range of services on top of their basic removal competencies. These can include packing, the sale or hire of packing materials, unpacking and storage facilities. Some companies will even pack your possessions, transport them, clean your new home, unpack your possessions and arrange them at the other end according to your instructions. These additional services will obviously cost you more money.

As a guideline you should have chosen your moving company at least 4-8 weeks before your moving day. Leave it too long and you'll find that the good companies are fully booked and you'll have less choice in the matter. It's far better to choose and book your company as far in advance as possible. You should be talking to your shortlist as soon as you have an estimated moving day. Bear in mind that movers are often busy at the end of the month, on Fridays and at weekends and may charge more for these premium times. Many will tell you that they have certain quiet days - such as Mondays - they may even be prepared to offer you a discount to move during their less busy periods. It's always worth asking!

I believe that every house should have a garden My name is Andrew Morris of Plants & Gardens As a keen and passionate gardener I believe that every house should have a garden or even a small area of nature to enjoy.

With increasingly busy lifestyles and most households now owning more than one vehicle, gardens seem to be on a decrease as more people are deciding to remove their gardens in favour of driveways and gravel.

For some this is their only choice, however there are those who decide not to have a garden due to lack of time, lack of knowledge or just do not know where to start.

If this is the case, I can assure you there are ways of having a garden or even a small area to enjoy that does not require lots of maintenance.

If you start out small with low maintenance plants you will soon discover you may become a budding gardener, seeing something you’ve planted grow and flourish is a very rewarding feeling especially if you decide to grow your own fruit and veg.

Even more importantly a garden can become a home to our native wildlife which has been struggling in recent years due to lack of habitat. Bees and Hedgehogs are two of the creatures that are finding times tough at the moment.

A garden does not have to be perfectly manicured to look good and be a home to wildlife. Sowing wildflower seeds for example can be enough to attract all kinds of pollinators to the garden, as well as giving you an excellent display of colour and beauty. As well as having major benefits for the environment and wildlife, your garden can be a great tool for getting children out of the house and even getting them interested in plants and the world of nature.

There are lots of activities that children can undertake in the garden, for example planting flowers, growing fruit and vegetables, not only will this give them the experience of planting something and watching it grow, but they can also eat the fruits of their labour!

Plan to update yourself and discover any weaknesses in your security system that may have had previously. Lock up your home, even if you go out only for a short time. Many burglars just walk in through an unlocked door or window.

Consider changing all the locks and tumblers when you move into your new house. For the most effective alarm system, conceal all wiring. A professional burglar looks for places where he or she can disconnect the security system.

Your house should appear occupied at all times. Use timers to switch lights and radios on and off when you're not at home. Immediately replace or repair a faulty alarm. Many people ignore an alarm that goes off periodically.

A spring-latch lock is easy prey for burglars who are "loiding" experts. Loiding is the method of slipping a plastic credit card against the latch tongue to depress it and unlock the door. A deadbolt defies any such attack. It is only vulnerable when there is enough space between the door and its frame to allow an intruder to use power tools or a hacksaw .If you lose your keys, change the locks immediately. Before turning your house key over to a professional house cleaner for several hours, make sure the person is honest and reputable as well as hardworking. Check all references thoroughly.

Instead of keeping a spare key in a mailbox, under the doormat, or on a nail behind the garage, wrap the key in foil or put it in a small container and bury it where you can easily find it if you need it.

Don't leave notes for service people or family members on the door.

These act as a welcome mat for a burglar.

If the entrances to your home are dark, consider installing lighting with an infrared detector. Most thieves don't want to be observed trying to get in a door. Talk to your neighbours about any suspicious people or strange cars you notice lurking about. To keep your tools from being stolen, paint the handles. Thieves avoid items that are easy to identify.

Trees located near windows or shrubbery that might shield a burglar from view can be major flaws in your home-protection plan. Consider your landscaping plan in light of your protection needs.

Ask for credentials from any sales-person who requests entry to your home. Ask that their ID be pushed under the door. Many professional burglars use this cover to check out homes. If you're doubtful, check with the person's office before letting him or her in.Do not list your full name on your mailbox or your entry in the telephone book. Use only your initial and your last name.

If someone comes to your door asking to use the phone to call a mechanic or the police, keep the door locked and make the call yourself. Dogs are good deterrents to burglars. Even a small, noisy dog can be effective -- burglars do not like to have attention drawn to their presence. Be aware, however, that trained guard dogs do not make good pets. Obedience training and attack training are entirely different, and only the former is appropriate for a house pet.
