“Facilitating an excellent education is much more than simply delivering knowledge.”

Jane Tulloch joined Robert Gordon’s College as the new Head of Nursery and Junior School last year from Auchenblae Primary School. Originally from the Orkney Islands, Jane began her teaching career at Lathallan Preparatory School and has extensive experience in Primary education across the North East of Scotland. She proudly speaks about South Aberdeenshire and the warm welcome she has received from the Robert Gordon’s community. Whether you’ve seen her courtside at netball, cycling through the south, or around the school playground in Auchenblae, Jane’s passion for inspiring an excellent education is at the heart of everything she does.

You have lived in South Aberdeenshire for a long time, what do you love about the area?

Having lived in South Aberdeenshire for many years, I can honestly say it’s a place that feels like home. One of the things I love most about the area is the strong sense of community. People here are incredibly welcoming and supportive, whether you’re new to the area or you’ve lived here for a long time. I also appreciate the natural beauty surrounding us - the countryside, the coast, and the quiet, peaceful environment all offer a wonderful balance to the busy pace of life. South Aberdeenshire really does have a unique charm, and it’s a privilege to live in, and have worked in, such a close knit, vibrant community. Whether it’s the local events, the friendly faces in the shops, or simply seeing the children growing up in such a nurturing environment, there’s a sense of connection here that I truly cherish.

Working in Aberdeen, how do you travel to and from school?

Living in the south, I often take the train, which is popular with the school community travelling to Robert Gordon’s College. In addition to the dedicated school bus service, the train provides an excellent option for the daily commute. I find it a great way to catch up on some reading before I start the school day!

What is the most rewarding aspect about being a teacher?

Facilitating an excellent education is much more than simply delivering

knowledge - it’s about sparking a lifelong love for learning, encouraging curiosity, and helping each child to be all they can be. It’s about creating a positive learning environment where every voice is heard, and every pupil feels valued, challenged, and supported. One of the many highlights is collaborating with the Pupil Council and a number of our other pupils groups to learn more about their views and ideas for facilitating change. When pupils have a real sense of agency and ownership over their learning journey, we all reap the benefits, both now and in the future. Robert Gordon’s ethos and ambition aligns with my values and vision for education. As we prepare our pupils for the future, our role as strategic educators is to strive to develop an inclusive and dynamic learning community that prepares children who have a love of learning to become critical thinkers and compassionate global citizens.

How do you think a strong community impacts the learning experience?

A strong and caring community is absolutely vital to creating a rich and effective learning experience for all ages. When pupils feel part of a supportive and inclusive community, they are more engaged, confident, and motivated to learn. A sense of belonging encourages them to be curious, work collaboratively with peers, and develop a sense of purpose and shared responsibility, creating an environment where ideas are exchanged, innovation is encouraged and everyone feels welcome.
