Celebrating 25 Years Ashbrook Nursery Garden Centre & Cafe

A brief history

Anne and Joe Webster first established a market garden in 1987 growing cut flowers and bedding plants for local shops and garden centres. It was in 2000 that Ashbrook Nursery was born as operations moved from their back garden to the current premises as Joe’s brother Francis joined the business.

Anne and Francis soon became familiar faces at the Angus Farmers’ Markets and in 2005 Ashbrook opened as a garden centre welcoming members of the public. In the years following, the garden centre has continued to evolve with the opening of a café in 2020 and a purpose-built shop in 2024 which has allowed for a greater range of products, such as books, gifts and homeware.. Francis sadly passed away in 2020, but since then, Anne and Joe’s three children have all become firmly involved in the business as Ashbrook looks towards the future.

Ashbrook Nursery - where plants come first!

What sets Ashbrook apart from many other modern garden centres is that plants are still the priority. The business started life as a nursery and growing our own plants continues to be a key part of our identity. Our aim is to always stock a good selection of varieties across the whole range of garden plants, and with over 2000 grown on site we are able to do so. By growing our own plants we can have better quality control and know that they will thrive when planted in your garden.

Growing our own also means that we can claim to have a much lower 'carbon footprint' than most garden centres. One articulated lorry delivery carrying compost, seeds & plug plants, pots & trays allows us to produce plants that would take at least ten lorries to deliver to us fully grown. We also grow our plants 'hard', with minimal heat, thereby saving more energy and producing hardy plants that are well able to withstand the rigours of the Scottish climate once planted in your garden.

Shop local, eat local

In our café, we have embedded the same principles as we have in our garden centre with a focus on quality. Almost all the cooking and baking is done in-house using fresh ingredients from local suppliers. As an independent business we know just how important our local customers are, so across all aspects of our business, we aim to source locally wherever possible.

The benefits of gardening

Gardening is a not just a hobby. Studies have proven that it can significantly improve both physical and mental wellbeing. Being outdoors, in the fresh air, and in touch with nature can help reduce stress, anxiety and improve your mood. Gardening offers a full body workout that aids strength, balance, and flexibility. It can be sociable, and incredibly satisfying – there is nothing quite like tasting your home grown veggies or watching your favourite plants start to bloom. Being able to work, enjoy or relax in a space that you have nurtured is very rewarding. Therapeutic gardening is being increasingly prescribed by doctors as a means to help people cope with both physical and mental health issues.

At Ashbrook, we believe in engaging with and supporting the local community. We help community gardening groups when we can, and host visits for local school and college students. We hold various workshops every year to encourage the public to get involved and learn a little bit more about gardening. Events such as our Halloween fun day are organised to raise funds for local charities.

Lathallan School (est. 1930) offers education to nursery, junior and senior school pupils between the ages of 6 weeks and 18 years - shortlisted for the UK Small Independent School of the Year Award 2024, a finalist in the Dundee and Angus Chamber Awards for championing Future Skills, and the only allthrough school in Scotland to receive the Gold Learning Outside the Classroom quality mark.

Irvine Welsh’s observation "The books that are really valuable are the books that evoke a sense of place” resonates deeply with me. At Lathallan, we believe that schools are the same. The four pillars of our Centenary Strategy - wellbeing, community, environment, and wisdom help create that sense of place that makes a Lathallan education a truly unique experience.

Our motto, "Vincit qui se vincit" (they who conquer themselves conquer all), underscores our belief in the importance of personal development. At Lathallan, we strive to bring out the best in every child. With an average class size of 13, it’s safe to say that at Lathallan, personalised attention for every pupil comes as standard. Our teachers can truly get to know each student, we celebrate individuality, encourage learning from every experience, and foster a caring and compassionate community.

Lathallan pupils throw themselves into school life and simply 'get involved'. Whether it be in class, on the sports field, while on an outdoor expedition, or performing on stage, pupils embrace the opportunities and support one another. Above all else, it is our aim that pupils should develop a sense of who they are and what they can achieve.

As we look to the future and celebrate the 95th year of Lathallan School in 2025, we will continue to adapt and innovate while honouring our school traditions and legacy, always striving to provide an exemplary education.
