elcome to the 2014 Wisconsin Golf Yearbook. With the frigid arctic weather we’ve been “enjoying” in the Midwest, it’s hard to even imagine playing golf, but before too long the ice will melt and the 2014 season will be upon us, and it surely looks to be another great one.

The Wisconsin State Golf Association, along with our partner Killarney Golf Media, Inc., created this publication to provide you an opportunity to reminisce about the 2013 season, to look forward to a jam-packed 2014 tournament season and to recognize and celebrate the golf courses that have made Wisconsin one of the most popular golf destinations in the country. How lucky are we that we don’t have to travel far to experience such great courses in beautiful, natural settings? They’re just out our back door.

The vast center section of this publication is devoted to Wisconsin’s golf facilities. Listings and locator maps are offered for all 358 WSGA-member facilities. We also include a listing of non-WSGA courses in Wisconsin.

Ozaukee CC in Mequon, one of the state’s premier private clubs, will host the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship in July. The defending champion is Jordan Niebrugge from Mequon, a former member of Ozaukee CC. (I think he has the home-field advantage.) Niebrugge will warm up for the defense of his title by playing in the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Ga., in April. Not a bad deal.

Niebrugge’s incredible summer of 2013 may never be repeated. He won the Wisconsin State Bestball, the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship (which earned his trip to the Masters) and the Wisconsin State Amateur, narrowly defeating his good pal Charlie Danielson. Niebrugge then won the grueling Western Amateur in Little Rock, Ark., and finished off his dream summer by winning both of his singles matches in a Walker Cup victory by the United States over Great Britain and Ireland. I know we all wish Jordan the very best when he steps on the first tee at Augusta National on April 10. I have a hunch he will tee it up on the weekend as well.

The State Amateur is just one of a broad array of competitions that are conducted by the talented staff at the WSGA. I hope you make it a priority to play in one or more of the tournaments. Whether you’re a scratch golfer or a higher handicap player, male or female, there is a competition that’s made for you.

Take a look at the tournament schedule for next year starting on Page 10. You don’t have to be Jordan Niebrugge in order to play and enjoy the competition.

And, just around the corner in the Badger State: the 2015 PGA Championship, the 2017 U.S. Open, Mike Keiser’s new creation called Sand Valley, the 2020 Ryder Cup …

Just thinking about what’s in store for all of us golf nuts in Wisconsin makes me want to bundle up, grab my pals and head out to the course for some winter golf.

Nah, I guess I’ll wait until April.

Ozaukee CC has seen its share of greatness

W

hen the combatants arrive at Ozaukee CC in Mequon in July for the 113th Wisconsin State Amateur Championship, sponsored by CliftonLarsonAllen, they will walk in the footsteps of the finest players who ever swung a club in the state of Wisconsin. We know this because the venerable private facility, which opened in 1922, has from the very beginning been a gracious tournament host when called upon.

It didn’t take long for Ozaukee CC to attract attention – locally, regionally and nationally. Part of the club’s pedigree can be traced to its designers, William Langford and Theodore Moreau, who formed a design firm in Chicago after World War I and became prolific course builders in the 1920s and ‘30s – a period accepted by many as the “golden age” of golf course architecture in the United States.

The paint was barely dry at Ozaukee when tournament organizers began calling. The club hosted its first Wisconsin State Open in 1925, won by Jack Blakeslee, and its first Wisconsin State Amateur Championship and State Junior Championship in 1926.

In 1929, Ozaukee hosted the Western Open Championship, won by Tommy Armour with a then-record score of 7-under 273. Horton Smith, winner of the first

Masters Tournament in 1934, finished second.

Through the 1960s, the Wisconsin State Golf Association annually hosted the State Amateur and the State Junior at a single site, so Ozaukee hosted both events in 1926, ’42 and ’62. It also hosted the 1989 State Amateur.

In 1926, E.P. “Ned” Allis won the eighth of his record 10 Wisconsin State Amateur titles. In 1942, Lynford Lardner captured the fourth of his five State Am titles. In 1962, Walter Atwood of Madison won in 39 holes. And Dave Miley took home the title in 1989. Allis, Lardner and Miley are members of the WSGA Hall of Fame, as is Don Iverson, who won the 1962 State Junior at Ozaukee CC. Two more WSGA Hall-of-Famers – Jim Milward (1946) and Manuel de la Torre (1968) – won a Wisconsin State Open title at Ozaukee.

Today, Ozaukee CC is a family-oriented private club with that gem of a golf course, measuring 6,721 yards – with a rating of 72.7 and Slope of 129 – from the back tees. The course has undergone a few changes over the years, but Langford and Moreau’s large, contoured putting surfaces are still the heart and soul of the layout.

While individuals such as Allis, Lardner,

Iverson and de la Torre will always be associated with Ozaukee CC, the club has a state hall-of-famer of its very own.

Bob Brue was head pro at Ozaukee from 1962 to ‘94, won the Wisconsin State Open five times and played a few seasons

on the PGA Tour and more than a decade on the Champions Tour. Brue, still an honorary member of the club, also earned a national reputation as a trick-shot artist and showman before retiring from the tours in 1996.

The defending State Amateur champion is Jordan Niebrugge, who lives in Mequon but plays out of The Bull at Pinehurst Farms in Sheboygan Falls. Niebrugge shot 6 under par at The Bog in Saukville last summer to win his first State Amateur by one stroke over Charlie Danielson of Osceola.

Big doings in central Wisconsin

C

entral Wisconsin generated a lot of golf news in 2013.

First, SentryWorld in Stevens Point, one of Wisconsin’s most iconic and important golf courses, closed for the entire 2013 season for an extensive renovation project spearheaded by its original designer, Robert Trent Jones Jr. Then, near the end of 2013, rumors that Chicago’s Mike Keiser was about to invest in a major golf development in Adams County, about 40 miles south of Stevens Point, proved to be true. The facility, which might grow to as many as four golf courses, will be called Sand Valley.

Keiser, the greeting card magnateturned golf resort developer best known for creating Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon, purchased a large swath of land near Rome, Wis., in December. A few weeks later he announced the hiring of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw to design the first Sand Valley course. If it proves as successful as Keiser’s other business endeavors, additional courses will follow in future years.

“We hope the first one will be (successful enough) that we will need another one,” Keiser said.

Keiser expects design work to begin at Sand Valley as soon as the snow melts in spring 2014, and it should be ready for play early in 2016. The Oliphant Companies, headquartered in Madison,

will build the course.

Keiser said he didn’t want to be impressed by the sand-covered Adams County property because he was busy with some other golf course projects. And the Wisconsin site lacks ocean frontage, which has been a staple of Keiser’s other golf courses.

“But within 30 minutes of being on site, I was hooked,” Keiser said. “It’s a thrilling dunescape.”

A reported 100 investors have ponied up $50,000 each to be founding members of Sand Valley. Keiser said he expects green fees to fall in the $125 to $150 range.

The course will be walker-friendly – if not walking-only – and offer caddie programs.

Up the road in Stevens Point, the SentryWorld renovation has exceeded high expectations. Sentry Insurance, which built the golf course in the early 1980s, is also renovating the sports center adjacent to the golf course, including a new golf shop and restaurant and a terrific new facility for special events like weddings and banquets.

The entire golf course was re-contoured and re-grassed and the irrigation system and all sand on the course were replaced. And the routing was altered, too, leading head pro Brian Dumler to call SentryWorld “a new golf course.”

To accomplish that, fairways were widened and chipping areas were added around greens, and the back tees were stretched to 7,237 yards, about 300 yards longer than before.

SentryWorld’s famous par-3 16th hole, known as “the Flower Hole,” also received a makeover, but its identity won’t change. The green was slightly re-shaped, and, according to Dumler, even larger flowerbeds will surround the putting surface when the course re-opens.

Wisconsin is now recognized as a worldclass golf destination – think the Kohler Co. golf courses in Sheboygan County, Erin Hills in Erin, Sand Valley and others – but an argument could be made that SentryWorld was the course that put Wisconsin on the golf map when it opened in 1982. SentryWorld has been called Wisconsin’s first modern golf course.

SentryWorld will re-open in late summer 2014.

Foundation issues grants

n 2014, 40 high school golf programs received Wisconsin State Golf Association Foundation grants totaling $46,400 to help pay for practice time, green fees for matches, assistant coach stipends and other expenses to ensure player costs remain low and to encourage participation. (See list below.) The WSGA Foundation also pays the green fees annually at the WIAA state high school golf championships.

The WSGA Foundation was established in 2005 to promote and preserve the game of golf in Wisconsin and provide funds for those purposes, including assisting high school programs.

The WSGA Foundation is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit entity that is primarily funded through individual donations and an annual golf outing. The 2014 WSGA Foundation Outing will be held on Sept. 29 at Erin Hills in Erin and Chenequa CC in Hartland.

New tournaments offered

S

ome new state tournaments have been added in 2014. The Wisconsin State Golf Association and the Wisconsin PGA are co-sponsoring a new event this season called the WSGA/WPGA Spring Showdown. The invitation-only event will debut April 29 at Tuckaway CC in Franklin for the top players on the WSGA and WPGA points lists from last season, as well as other amateurs and pros based on their play in 2013. The Tuckaway CC head pro and club champion will also be invited.

The WSGA is also adding a new Mid-Amateur Championship, for players 25 and older, on Sept. 8-9 at Bishops Bay CC in Middleton. The new tournament replaces the WSGA Governor’s Cup and the WSGA Director’s Cup. Visit www.wsga.org for the full schedule.

North pressed into duty by old friend Watson

M

adison’s Andy North will serve as vice captain for the United States team at the 40th Ryder Cup in September. North, who turns 64 this year, was selected for the job by his friend Tom Watson, the eight-time major championship winner who will lead the U.S. side for the second time.

Following his appointment, North said he accepted the vice captaincy so he could “help a dear friend” in Watson, who he has known since 1967. North and Watson have partnered together in team play, winning the 2008 Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf.

“I’m looking forward to it,” North said. “There’s a lot of excitement to the Ryder Cup, and it means an awful lot to me. I’ve been lucky enough to cover it for ESPN, and I get emotional covering it. It’s going to be a great experience, and the bottom line is we get a ‘W’ at the end of the week.”

Since 1985, Europe holds a 9-4-1 advantage over the U.S. The Americans haven’t won on European soil since 1993, which coincidentally – or not – was the last time Watson served as captain.

North, who works as a broadcaster for ESPN, won the U.S. Open twice (1978 and ’85) and was a member of the 1985 Ryder Cup team. Watson suggested his players would benefit from North’s experience.

“Andy knows what it takes to close the deal, and that’s what we need on the Ryder Cup team,” Watson said.

Like North, Watson is focused on winning the back the cup.

“I’m certainly happy to have Andy on my side and in my ear helping me make the decisions that will bring this cup back home from Europe this time. It’s been way too long.”

The first nine spots on the U.S. team will be determined on points that players compile through the 96th PGA Championship in August. Watson, with help from North, will then choose his three captain’s picks to complete the 12-man U.S. squad.

The 40th Ryder Cup will be held Sept. 23-28 at Gleneagles in Perthshire, Scotland.

Niebrugge helps U.S. team win back Walker Cup

A

fter an incredible summer run, Mequon’s Jordan Niebrugge was rewarded with a berth on the United States Walker Cup team.

The 44th Walker Cup, pitting the United States against a team of amateurs from Great Britain and Ireland, was held Sept. 7-8 at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, N.Y. The 20-year-old Niebrugge justified his selection for the 44th United States Walker Cup team by going 2-2 in his four matches and authoring the most lopsided victory during the Sunday afternoon singles session.

The U.S. beat Great Britain and Ireland, 17-9, in the two-day amateur team competition. The U.S. now

leads the all-time series 35-8-1.

The 2013 golf season was a remarkable one for Niebrugge, both at the state and national amateur level.

In Wisconsin, he won the WSGA Match Play Championship, sponsored by TaylorMade, in June and the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship, sponsored by CliftonLarsonAllen, in July.

On the national scene, Niebrugge captured two prestigious titles in July – the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and the Western Amateur Championship.

Niebrugge, who is in his sophomore season at Oklahoma State, also played in the United States Amateur Championship but lost in the first round.

ormer Greater Milwaukee Open tournament director Tom Strong was rewarded for his career-long success on the amateur golf scene in 2013 by being elected the 85th member of the Wisconsin State Golf Association Hall of Fame.

“It’s humbling to think of who is in the Hall of Fame and how I interfaced with all of those people, whether it’s administratively or as a player,” said Strong.

Strong was hired as tournament director of the GMO in 1987. During his 12-year tenure, more than $2 million was raised for local charities. He also worked with The First Tee organizations in Wisconsin,

assisting them with fundraising and growing the game. In 1988, he founded Birdies for Charity, which has gone on to raise $50 million at PGA Tour events.

In 1998, Strong was named championship director of the PGA Tour’s World Golf Championships – Bridgestone Invitational.

As a player, Strong won the 1994 Wisconsin State Amateur and finished as runner-up in 1995. He won the WSGA Match Play Championship in 1997.

He currently resides in St. Augustine, Fla. as director of tournament standards for the PGA Tour.

Helminen leads Wisconsin Section again

R

yan Helminen, who works at Ridgeway CC in Neenah, earned Wisconsin PGA Section player of the year honors for the sixth time in 2013 thanks to several top-five finishes in WPGA events, including the Wisconsin State Open and the WPGA Championship.

Helminen finished the season-long competition with 1,065 points, followed

by David Roesch of Storm’s Golf Range with 978.75 points.

points list in 2013. Terasa, the head pro at North Hills CC in Menomonee Falls, won the WPGA Professional Championship in September for a record 11th time on the way to amassing 1,500.42 WPGA senior points.

Peter Moog of Horseshoe Bay GC finished second with 977.50 points.

Mike Johnston of Naga-Waukee GC in Pewaukee earned player-of-the-year honors in 2013 from the Wisconsin Assistant Golf Professional Association with

1,051.88 points. Johnston won the WAGPA Stroke Play title in May and the National Car Rental WAGPA Championship in August.

Evan Wartgow of Koshkonong Mounds CC in Fort Atkinson was second in WAGPA points with 910.
