Leahy’s ‘miraculous achievement” across the Swedish Arctic

Organisers of the Montane Arctic Spine Race – won by Arctic explorer Kevin Leahy – have said that all future editions of the race will be a search to find someone who can surpass the Killarney man’s achievements. The Montane Arctic Spine Race is a non-stop, 472-km foot race along the Kungsleden Trail in Arctic Sweden, through one of the most stunning winter landscapes in the world. Kilcummin athlete Kev Leahy was declared the winner of the first edition of the race earlier this week. Competitors started at Abisko at 9am on February 6 as they began a journey through snowfields, Arctic tundra and frozen woodlands flanked by Sweden’s highest mountains. The aim was the finish line at Hemavan within 192 hours in what was an expedition race that required self-sufficiency and proficiency in cold weather management, with temperatures as low as -35°C and winds as high as 40 mph. Leahy, the winner of the 100-mile version of the Montane Yukon Ultra in 2020 and second in the full 500km Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra in 2022, was the last person standing as the race approached the revised finish line near

Hemavan on Wednesday. He was alone on the course since fellow competitor Ed Sellon finished the shorter Arctic Challenger course in Kvikkjokk two days previously. Leahy’s achievement was both record-breaking and trail blazing. “Since then every kilometre he covered has been a record, and every hour that he remained out there has been a miraculous achievement,” said an event statement. “As the person who managed to comfortably cover the furthest distance, Kev is our winner this year. All future editions of the Arctic Spine Race will be a search for somebody able to build on and surpass his incredible performance.” Kevin Leahy powered his way across the Arctic in support of Asiam.ie. €1m in funding for roads Planning granted for fifteen Nearly €1 million has been allocated in funding for improving and maintaining regional and local roads on the Killarney Municipal District.

The biggest allocation of €400,000 will go to improvement works at Finnegan’s Cross. An additional €100,000 will go towards unspecified projects under the ‘Killarney Strategic Links Project’ banner. Mayor of Killarney Cllr Niall Kelleher said : “I welcome in excess of €30 million for Kerry's regional and local roads in 2024. In particular there has been 400k allocated to complete works at Finnegan's Cross.” Local roads in the Kilbrean More area

will get €60,000 while Loreta Road and Woodlawn have been allocated €25,000 and €20,000 respectively. An area near Two Mile School will get €50,000. "Following the recent appeal by Catherine Barry Principal of Two Mile National School, and Tara O'Donoghue on behalf of parents I am delighted that €50,000 has been secured for the provision of safety improvement works at the school." added Kellher. Just outside the municipal district - Listry Bridge – is in line for €30,000. Meanwhile, Martin Grady will welcome the news that the Park Road (Railway Bridge) will get €40,000 (see separate story on page 6).

glamping pods at Racecourse An Bord Pleanála has granted permission to build 15 glamping units on the grounds of Killarney Racecourse. As well as the 15 pods the development will also include an office, a car park, LPG gas tanks and enclosures and other ancillary site works. Despite several objections to the proposed development the An Bord’s Inspector said the it was in-line with the county development plan. One of the policy objectives of the Development Plan which seek to provide a

variety of tourist accommodation. The report also said the development would not “injure the visual amenities of the area or the amenities of properties in the vicinity by reason of noise and general disturbance or would not seriously depreciate the value of properties in the area, and would be acceptable in terms of traffic safety and convenience.” “The proposed development would, therefore, be in accordance with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area,” said the report.

Organisers & Sponsors of the South Kerry Jobs Fair 2024: South Kerry Development Partnership, Killarney Chamber for Tourism & Commerce, South Kerry Skillnet, KCC, HR Buddy, Red Chair Recruitment & DreamJobs

South Kerry Jobs Fair going ‘from strength to strength’ There was a real buzz about employment in South Kerry this week as over 1,500 jobseekers turned up to yesterday’s (Thursday’s) jobs fair - to meet with potential new employers. Held in the Great Southern Killarney from 10.30am to 1.30pm, the South Kerry Jobs Fair, organised by South Kerry Development Partnership CLG in conjunction with Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, had more than 50 different exhibitor stands with hundreds of jobs on offer. Positions were available across all sectors with some employers having one hundred plus positions available to fill. A number of other organisations who provide support services and educational opportunities for potential employees also took part in the event to ensure that all those who attended would be able to avail of all potential employment opportunities. The event was aimed at helping jobseekers, many with a broad range of skills and backgrounds, meet directly with employers so that both sides could get to know each other in an informal setting. Employers will now have the chance to follow up with potentially suitable employees in the coming weeks. South Kerry Development Partnership CEO Noel Spillane spoke to the Advertiser on the day commenting, “We are delighted with the turnout for what is now the third year of the event. It is a great opportunity to for people in Kerry to come and meet prospective employers, get employment advice and explore further educational opportunities. Attendees also had the opportunity to attend workshops on CV Tailoring, Interview Skills, Career Development and we also had

Kerry footballer Paudie Clifford from Red Chair Recruitment discussing managing a professional job and a successful sports career.” Speaking on behalf of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, joint president Johnny McGuire said the South Kerry Jobs Fair was “going from strength to strength each year. The Chamber president said it was great to see such a wide variety of skilled professionals in attendance and noted a conversation he had earlier with one couple he met. “I was just chatting to a lovely couple who were living in the UK but because of issues around Brexit they have now decided to move to Ireland and chose Killarney because of how beautiful it is. The Polish man is a highly skilled engineer, while his English partner is a pastry chef with years of experience. On behalf of the Chamber I would encourage local employers to make sure they are represented at next year’s event.” Also in attendance was Killarney Mayor, Niall Kelleher. The local councillor was president of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce back in 2022 and played his part in growing the fair in partnership with SDKP. Kelliher commented, “it is great to see the event still going strong. We had a very productive networking breakfast with local employers prior to the event kicking off this morning and while there are certainly recruitment challenges out there, the mood from the room was very positive.”

Reens' Life Pharmacy scoops national award Reens' Life Pharmacy, College Square, Killarney has won the Best Sales Team at the Life Pharmacy awards. The event was hosted by the electric Mario Rosenstock, who kept everyone in stiches throughout and was held at Killashee House, in County Kildare last week. The award was presented to Eoin Reen by Robin Hanna of McLernon’s Computers.

“I would like to thank all the staff for the hard work and dedication that lead to this award and to congratulate all the team for this amazing achievement,” said Eoin Reen, chief pharmacist and owner of Reen's Life Pharmacy. “What makes Reen's Life Pharmacy unique is the team effort put into making sure that the customer experience is to the highest standard possible on every occasion, bearing in mind that the expectation may be different depending on the individual.”

“Deplorable” road “an accident waiting to happen” – Grady A poorly-surfaced road nearly Killarney town centre is “an accident waiting to happen” according to one local councillor.

St Oliver’s National School triple winner at Killarney Credit Union School Quiz

Martin Grady raised the condition of the Park Road near the Outlet Centre at a Killarney Municipal District meeting last September. At the time he asked: “ That Killarney MD would urgently seek funding to resurface the section of road between the Killarney Outlet Centre entrance and Friary Downs entrance on Park Road which is in a deplorable condition.” So far nothing has been done to repair

the ever-deteriorating road. “The road either side of the Railway Bridge on Park Road is decrepit and in an extremely dangerous condition while getting worse by the day, cyclists are having to swerve out to avoid the bad surface often onto pathway of motorists, it’s an accident waiting to happen,” Grady told the Killarney Advertiser. “It’s in urgent need of repair, sooner rather than later before the season starts and traffic gets heavier.” Grady is hopeful that the work will be done in time for St Patrick’s Weekend, the traditional start to the tourism season in Killarney.

Several Killarney schools finished in the top three of the recent Killarney Credit Union School Quiz. The Great Southern was filled to capacity recently where 75 primary school teams from all over East and South Kerry participated in the annual Killarney Credit Union School Quiz. St Oliver’s School, Killarney emerged victorious in the Under 11 category with Kilcummin NS in second place. St Oliver’s also won the U13 category with St Johns, Kenmare second in this category. All four teams will go on to represent Killarney Credit Union in the Chapter competition on March 3 in Tralee. This year, 300 primary school pupils participated in the quiz from 25 schools all over East and South Kerry. Killarney Credit Union has been hosting the school quiz for over 20 years. In the Under 11 category, first place

went to St Olivers National School represented by Leo O’Riordan, Magnus Prudnikovas, Aoife Delaney, and Lily O’Shea. Second place went to Kilcummin NS with team members Cian Lenihan, Ella Lawlor, Sarah O’Connor, Luke O’Sullivan. Third place was awarded to Lissivigeen NS and the team members were Mark Clifford, Sam Fleury, Tadhg Daly, and Sinéad Coleman. In the U13 section first place went to St Oliver’s NS, Killarney represented by Raegan Browne, Rian Gleeson and Áine Clayton. Second place went to St Johns Kenmare represented by Ronan Deasy, Jemma O’Sullivan, Eoghan Downing and Alice O’Connor.

St Paul's are Division One South Conference champions St. Paul’s Killarney secured the MissQuote.ie Division One South Conference title with three games to spare after they pulled clear of a dogged Limerick Celtics outfit in the second half to earn a 71-60 victory in Crescent College on Saturday evening.

St Paul's Chairman Jim Delaney, Head Coach James Fleming pictured with joint captains Lynn Jones and Rheanne O'Shea at the presentation of the Shield and medals in the Killarney Sports and Leasure Centre on Saturday.

It was the home side who led by a point at the half-time recess thanks in no small measure to Samantha Coleman who carded 16 of her 21-point total in that period.

But, with Sofia Paska and Rheanne O’Shea delivering 41 points between them, St. Paul’s quickly began to put some daylight between themselves and their hosts. “I’m delighted with the result” said St. Paul’s head coach, James Fleming. “Our defence was superb in the second half. “Rheanne O’Shea’s second-half performance was excellent and Sophia [Paska] is back showing the consistent performance that has made her an All-Star the last two years.

Last Sunday's Super Bowl LVIII saw the Kansas City Chiefs triumph over the San Francisco 49ers on a score line of 25-22.

16.02.2024

OPINION: Too much made of Swift's Super Bowl screentime

| By Sadhbh Teahan The much-anticipated game ended level after regulation, and it took 20 minutes of overtime to decide a winner. Patrick Mahomes' last minute pass to teammate Mecole Hardman secured a historic backto-back Super Bowl victory for the Chiefs. Many celebrities attend the Super Bowl each year and this year was no different. Household names such as Lady Gaga, Elon Musk and the Kardashians were all in attendance, but much of the off-field hype was focused on the presence of Taylor Swift. In a show of support for her boyfriend Travis Kelce (tight end for the KC Chiefs), the Texas singer took a break from her international tour to be in attendance at the big game. While post-match commentary should have been centred around the captivating encounter, it was Taylor Swifts screentime during the match intervals which has caught most of the headlines. Well-known US podcaster Chris Russo has been particularly outspoken on his Mad Dog Unleashed podcast, saying the coverage of Taylor Swift was “way over the top”. Personally, I feel much of the commentary on the issue has been blown out of

proportion. Bar the fact that she only featured for a total of 54 seconds in a broadcast that lasted over 3 hours, I think the media's reaction has been harsh. While I doubt that the NFL diehards are aware of what goes on at Taylor Swift's concerts, they might be surprised to know that something very similar happened when Travis Kelce attended one of Taylor’s concerts in Argentina back in November, but received a very different reaction. Kelce was shown on the screen numerous times during the concert, and there was even one particular moment when

Hello Killarney Advertisers readers. My name is Sadhbh Teahan, I am seventeen years old and from Kilcummin. I love reading, art and listening to Sabrina Carpenter. I’m a 5th year student at St. Brigid's Killarney and as part of my LCVP course, I completed my work experience this week with the Killarney Advertiser. I spent my days writing articles and seeing how the magazine is put together. I got to meet the friendly staff who made my stay so enjoyable and it was interesting to watch them contribute to the running of such a successful business. I really enjoyed my time here and it has made me consider a career in journalism which I look forward to exploring more in the future.

Taylor changed the lyrics in one of her songs to ‘Karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me’. There was a heartfelt moment when the cameras focused in on the NFL superstar, capturing his shock and happiness. In contrast to the reaction to last Sunday’s final, the moment garnered a hugely positive response from both Swift’s fans and the stage dancers. We have become accustomed to seeing celebrities featuring onscreen at major sporting events, particularly during emotionally charged moments, but I have

never seen such a negative reaction online as the one after last Sunday's game. Take rapper Drake's attendance at Toronto Raptors matches as a primary example. The man jumps up and down the courtside as if he was the team coach himself while Taylor Swift was merely cheering on her boyfriend in a much more calm manner. Personally, I think their support for each other in the things that they love most is adorable to watch. The game drew in an estimated 123.7 million U.S. viewers. It was not only the largest viewership recorded in the 58-year history of the Super Bowl, but also, to the biggest U.S. audience for any event since the first astronauts walked on the moon in 1969. Going by some of the more positive comments online Taylor Swift’s appearance had a younger female audience tuned in as her fanbase watched to see her boyfriend playing. Many fathers have taken to the internet claiming that her association with the game has captured their daughter's attention and have expressed how much they appreciate the opportunity it gave them to bond with their child. Overall, I believe social media is providing an easy outlet for people to be nasty and it's important that people are more conscious about their hurtful words.

‘The Rock’ memorial walk raises €3700 for Kerry Hospice

Last year’s charity walk was held in memory of Johnny ‘The Rock’ O’Brien, who sadly passed away on St. Stephen’s Day, 2022. Johnny was the heart and soul of Glenflesk area , a caring farmer and neighbour who lived his life on his own terms. Walkers left from Garries Bridge 6.45am on December 23 and made the

long walk in darkness to the summit, which has two strenuous inclines, leading to the Western Pap at 690 Metres. These ancient sacred summits, ‘The Paps of Anú’, are in the Derrynasaggart Mountains close to the Cork-Kerry border. The Paps have long been associated with mythology, mysticism and majesty.

At approximately 8.45am sunrise on December 23 the craic began, with Glenflesk’s finest musicians Derry and Rosie Healy setting the pace for a Kerry polka set, followed by a rendition of ‘For these are my Mountains’, Johnny ‘The Rock’ O’Briens favourite song. Mountaineer Donie Mulcahy and crew guided the walkers to and from the

summit. Donations were on the morning of the walk and the proceeds of this collection were handed over the Kerry Hospice Foundation this week. Don O'Leary and staff of the Kerry Way Bar, Glenflesk, provided complimentary coffee and scones to the walkers after the trek.

Kerry Mental Health has also made the same arrangement with Tralee Chamber Alliance. “Kerry Mental Health Association is cementing its links with the business communities in Tralee, as Kerry’s Capital, and Killarney, as the number one tourism destination in Ireland. We are

committed to constantly reviewing and updating our programme of activities, to respond to the local and county need,” said John Drummey, The General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association. “We expect that our membership of the chambers in Tralee and Killarney will help us reach a wider audience when developing and delivering mental health training programmes and activities in the future. It is also our wish, with more access to networks such as the chambers of commerce in both towns, to see more people get involved with us as volunteers.” The primary objective of Kerry Mental Health Association is to promote the general welfare of people and to support those with mental health challeng-

Somewhere over the rainbow The training was done, the bunting was hanging, and posters were afloat throughout the school..... it was marathon day for SNA Sarah Houlihan in Cullina National School.

| By Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan There was an electric atmosphere starting to generate from around 8 am on the 9th of February, with the arrival of staff and pupils alike. Parents, pupils and people from the local community all wanting to wish Sarah the best on her marathon challenge. Emotions and spirits were high as everyone watched as Sarah made her way down to the start line with the pupils from her class. Jules Weakly, who kindly offered his services to the school, kept the crowd upbeat as he counted Sarah off on her 42-kilometre run. We were all with her in spirit but she was the one taking on the roads. Sarah was never short of company along the route as people's amazing kind nature shone as bright as the sun did that Friday. Outside the Dunloe Hotel Sarah met her first group of supporters, the amazing pupils from St Frances Special School Beaufort and their teacher Aisling Brad-

ley, third class in Cullina National School with their teacher Kate Fenton and SNA Lisa Fogarty-Murphy. Once she heard the cheers her pace picked up a bit to see the children's posters and excited faces. She also met old friends and colleagues from Cullina National School, former popular school secretary Agnes Curran along with her family greeted Sarah at the Fossa cross with balloons and cheers of support. Along she ran listening to the playlist that inspired her to keep going each week during those long runs. Before she knew it she was at Deenagh Lodge where the fifth and sixth class pupils could be heard chanting her name, along with staff members teacher Mark Healy and Bronagh Murphy, SNA's Emma Sheehan and Tomas Straka. Each time she saw the children she picked up the pace to get to them. They were her motivation. Reports and pictures being sent back to

Lions Club ‘Message in a Bottle’ now available in pharmacies Starting this week, anyone who might need one can get a Killarney Lions Club ‘Message in a Bottle’, free of charge, at their local pharmacy. The ‘bottle’ is a small plastic container with an information form which people

can fill out with their basic medical details for use by Paramedics, Gardaí, Fire-fighters, and first responders in cases of emergency. The initiative, which launched last November, is aimed at helping older people, people living alone and people with medical conditions to quickly receive the care

school were telling a story of her taking it all in her stride as she was ahead of her predicted times. The stretch from town out Muckross Road was filled with the noise of beeping cars and cheers from the local people. Once out at the gates to Muckross House and Gardens Sarah was given a screech of support from teacher Marie Murphy and fourth class. Fourth class travelled to support Sarah in style in the Garda community bus. 4th class were also accompanied by teacher Olivia Knightly and SNA's Siobhan O'Shea and Julie Reidy. Sarah reached the halfway point near the turn-off for Dinis Cottage. She knew the return journey would be her biggest challenge. Once again she was not short of support, the staff of Tigh Mary Donal's along with friends of Sarah were out to support her. The pupils and staff of Fossa National School lined either side of the road for Sarah to show their support. She speaks about this with a voice filled with emotion

as she did not expect it and is incredibly grateful for it. Sarah found the journey from Beaufort Bridge the most difficult, she was so close but her body was getting tired. The siren of the Garda car in front of her reminded her of the tremendous support she had gotten to get her this far. The siren echoed the cheers of support she received along the route. Turning the bend towards Cullina National School, she could feel the lump form in her throat, waiting for her the 12 pupils with teachers Lorraine Counihan, Niall Dennehy, Donal O'Sullivan and SNAs Karen Lucey and Petrina Lyons. They were her final destination. Once she made it to them home was in sight. Their excitement and happiness to see her would have carried her over the line no matter what! They all ran together, celebrating Sarah as she received a hero's welcome in her school. A rainbow hung in front of the school that day as if waiting for Sarah to arrive home.

they need in an emergency situation. Once the information form is complete, they can put it in the fridge with a list of medications, and put self-adhesive green cross labels near the front door of their home and on the door of the fridge. In the event of an accident or incident within the home, the first responder/emergency services on the scene will be alerted to the bottle when they see the labels. "We are absolutely delighted that all our local pharmacies are now on board with this initiative, because it makes it easy for people to get one of the bottles," said

Denis Doolan, President of Killarney Lions Club. “We would encourage anyone who thinks it might help them to visit their pharmacy, get a bottle and fill out the information form. If it helps even just one person to get the help they need more quickly and effectively, it is well worth it." The pharmacies taking part are: Allcare (New St.), Boots (Deerpark), CarePlus+ (Park Rd.), Kennelly’s (Reeks and New St.), Reens Life (Plunkett St.), O'Sullivan's (New St.), Sewell’s (New St.), Sheahan’s (Main St.) and Trants (Park Rd.).

Coolick National School to launch online lotto A popular primary school in the Killarney area is launching a new fundraising initiative this week to support and improve the education experience of the children it serves.

Fourth play by Killarney playwright set for countywide tour A fourth play by popular Killarney playwright Ray O'Sullivan will get a hometown performance on March 14. ‘Stones’ is the fourth play in a series that follows previous success stories like ‘The Rise and Rise of the Healy-Raes’, ‘A Papal Blessing’ and ‘Weight Watching’. Rehearsals, by the Killarney Theatre Company, have been in full swing since last October. The play made its debut at the Ivy Leaf Theatre Castleisland on Thursday ahead of a countywide tour visiting CYMS Kilorglin (February 24); Abbeydorney (March 2); Killarney (March 14); Scartaglen Heritage Centre (March 16) and the Westlodge Hote, Bantry (March 23) ‘Stones’ tells the story of a beautiful Ker-

ry valley which is about to be destroyed by concrete and Wind turbines when local sheep farmer Dan and a nutty English professor named Conrad set out to thwart the destruction, fuelled by a bottle of Poteen. "Anytime we've ever staged a play, local audiences have really supported us, we have always played too sold-out houses and we really, really appreciate everyone's support,” said O’Sullivan. Tickets and info are available from O’Sullivan on 087 2279657 or the INEC box office on 064 6671555.

The Coolick National School Lotto is now live; offering a weekly prize, a weekly jackpot and a range of valuable spot prizes at launch. Coolick NS first opened its doors in 1870 making it one of the county’s oldest primary schools. The school and pre-school is home to over 130 children from the locality. This is an increase of 20% over the past 5 years taking enrolment to an all-time high. Coolick NS School Lotto Chairperson and parent Pádraig Leane says properly resourcing primary school services is crucial: “The cost of providing education is rising and the school grants provided by the department, although valuable, only do so much. We want to overcome this challenge with our school lotto. The school has a range of immediate needs but also longer-term goals to expand our facilities, add more sports equipment, wellness programmes, student support programmes and increase extra-curricular trips,” he said.

First on the list is a new set of school jerseys, gymnastics mats, replacement of end-of-life iPads and further expansion of their Tír na nÓg play area for the younger pupils. Coolick National School Principal Gearoid O’Sullivan remains focused on providing the best for the children of Coolick. “As a school we are committed to providing the best equipment, teaching and learning resources, outdoor spaces and a school interior that helps nurture each child. This school lotto will help us with our commitment to provide the very best for the school and especially for the pupils in our care,” said the principal. The staff and students of Coolick National School are appealing to families, friends, past pupils, members of the local community, stakeholders and supporters to get behind the weekly school lotto. It is hoped that the option of 1 line for €2.50, 2 lines for €4 or 3 lines for €5 will encourage everybody to contribute. A lotto draw will take place each week with a maximum jackpot of €2,000 to be won. Signing up is easy; through the school's website www.ourfundraiser.ie/org/ coolickns

"Think carefully before deferring your State Pension" - Moloney Local Councillor Marie Moloney has advised people who are reaching pension age this year to think very carefully about deferring their pension, in particular those who would have an entitlement to a full Contributory State Pension. “If you defer your pension for one year until you reach the age of 67, then you will have missed out on €14,419.60 for one based on todays figures. As a result of deferring until you are 67 your pension will be at the increased rate of €13.00 per week and it would take you 20 years at the increased rate to make up what you lost out on.” “If you defer your pension until you are 70 years of age you will have missed out on €57,678, again based on today’s figures. As a result your pension will be increased by €59.90 per week and it would take just over 18 years to make up what you lost out on.” Where it would be beneficial to continue working would be if you did not meet the first qualifying condition of have 520 contributions paid during your lifetime,

continuing to pay PRSI after 66 may bring you into payment of the minimum pension. Please take advice before you make any decisions on this matter as people may not be aware of the consequences and of the fact if you take your pension at 66 then you can continue to work after pension age and not pay PRSI, depending on your employer

Footbridge for Killarney rail station not included in funding There have been renewed calls for a footbridge to be built linking Killarney bus and train stations. Kerry Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill put the matter before an Oireachtas Transport Committee meeting. Previously, now retired Killarney-based Councillor Michael Gleeson and other local representatives pushed for the construction of a footbridge but so far it has fallen on deaf ears. “It’s a no brainer, why would you expect people to walk with luggage, people with a disability, our senior citizens, parents with buggies, our small children, etc, all the way around outside, when both terminals are practically side by side in Killarney. A Footbridge connecting both is logical. I really think in this instance they are making a laugh of the people, who by the way they are supposed to be serving,” said Councillor Cahill. “Iarnród Éireann, in answer to Councillor Cahill, states that it has prioritised other accessibility projects elsewhere. Killarney and Kerry seem to have been designated 2nd best by them" said Councillor

Cahill. Following an analysis in October2019, three main categories of options were identified by Iarnród Éireann to improve connectivity between the Bus and Train Stations. Ideas discussed were: • Provision of a pedestrian route through the Bus Éireann/public car park and Train station at platform level or at grade • Provision of a new underpass • Provision of a new footbridge A spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann said: While there is an estimated time saving of four to six minutes per passenger transfer, in the context of the wider accessibility upgrade investment in a limited funding environment, Iarnród Éireann has prioritised other accessibility projects around the network. Each of the options above require varying levels of capital expenditure to build and maintain. The matter was forwarded to the National Transport Authority for final decision on funding and implementation, and it has not to date been included in funding allocations.”

Tourism accommodation to be discussed at council level Poor uptake of email payslips Killarney Councillor Brendan Cronin is calling for Kerry County Council to engage with Government regarding the lack of tourism accommodation in the town. He will bring a motion before Monday’s monthly meeting of the local authority. He will say: "That Kerry County Council call on the Minister for Housing Darragh O'Brien and all Government parties to realise the long term damage they will cause to tourism here in Kerry if they persist with their clampdown policy on

short term letting providers, with almost 37% of our country's available tourism beds already contracted out long term to IPAS, the Government's current policy if pursued will have devastating consequences for our tourism product and the providers who depend on tourism.” He will also raise the short-term letting issue in the town by adding. “I am also calling for planning legislation to be put in place to protect Kerry's short term letting tourism industry and the income of its providers."

by teachers - says Department The number of Department of Education staff availing of an option to email payslips is “ disappointing low”, according one local councillor. Cllr John O'Donoghue first raised the issue in September 2021. He will, again, raise the matter at Monday’s monthly meeting of Kerry County Council. "Further to my successful notice of mo-

tion in September 2021 calling on the Department to begin emailing payslips each month instead of wasting money posting them, it has emerged that the numbers availing of this option is disappointingly low,” he will say. “I now propose that we write to the Minister asking that the initiative changes from an ‘opt in’ scheme, to one where people will have to opt out in order to continue receiving a paper payslip."

Reeling in the years at the Great Southern

Nearly 200 past and present staff members of the Great Southern Killarney joined together last Saturday night for an evening of celebration marking the beginning of the hotel’s 170th year in business.

Those in attendance ranged from having one day of service to over 50 years. It was estimated on the evening that there were nearly 1300 combined years of service in the room.

“This event was not just a celebration of the institution that is the Great Southern, but a heartfelt tribute to the legacy each one of our colleagues – past and present – has contributed to this iconic hotel. I believe the Great Southern has always been more than just a place of work; it has been a nurturing ground for future leaders, a place where lifelong friendships were formed and a stage for countless stories,” said Michael Jacobi, Managing Director, Hayfield Family Collection.

St Patrick’s Day Parade 2024 We are excited to announce our 2024 St. Patrick's Day Parade theme

This year's celebration promises to be extraordinary, as we highlight historical moments in Killarney’s past. The 2024 parade will focus on three significant aspects of the town's past:

Inisfallen Island

Ross Castle

Discovering the tales of monks who have significantly shaped Killarney's history.

Showcasing a symbol of Killarney's resilience.

Queen Victoria's visit to Killarney Capturing the pomp and grandeur of the visit.

The theme will evolve over the coming years of the festival to celebrate Killarney's present and future, but in 2024, our focus is on our historical past. The parade's success is built on the involvement of communities. This year, we ask you to let your imagination shine and bring the theme of Killarney's storied past and colourful history into your group's presence. In 2024, our goal is to elevate the Killarney St. Patrick's Parade to become the premier regional parade outside of Dublin, and we are counting on your support and adoption of the theme to achieve this. We cannot wait to see you and your group's take on Killarney’s past on March 17th, 2024, at 2 pm. A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

UN report on migratory species reveals complex challenges Imagine a world without the awe-inspiring sight of monarch butterflies fluttering across North America, or the majestic whales breaching the ocean depths during their epic migrations. Sadly, a landmark report by the United Nations paints a worrying picture for these and countless other migratory species, revealing a crisis unfolding at a global scale. Released in February 2024, the State of the World's Migratory Species report highlights the dire situation faced by nearly half of all migratory species, with over 20% teetering on the brink

of extinction. Migratory fish are particularly vulnerable, with a staggering 97% facing imminent disappearance. The report identifies two main factors: overexploitation and habitat loss, both rooted in human activities. Unsustainable fishing practices decimate populations, while habitat destruction fragments migratory routes and disrupts vital resting and breeding grounds. Adding another layer of complexity is the looming threat of climate change, shifting weather patterns disrupt migration timings, impacting access to food and breeding opportunities. Rising sea levels further squeeze coastal habitats, leaving species with nowhere

to go. The report is not all doom and gloom. It also showcases success stories: the return of humpback whales in the Southern Ocean, the recovery of the North American wood duck, and the ongoing conservation efforts protecting sea turtles. The report calls for a multi-pronged approach to tackling the threats posed including; International cooperation, investing in sustainable fishery practices, restoring critical habitats, combating climate change and raising public awareness around conservation efforts.

€450,000 RTÉ golden handshake A €450,000 exit package awarded to former RTÉ Chief Financial Officer Breda O'Keeffe has sparked further controversy in what seems to be a never-ending saga in the mismanagement of the state broadcasters accounts. A report last month expressed serious concerns around a redundancy package given to the Chief Financial Officer O’Keeffe in 2020. The deal was worked on by Head of HR Eimear Cusack – who remains in her position – and this week she told the Oireachtas Media Committee that she should have pushed back on the deal which was agreed confidentially between the CFO and former Director General Dee Forbes. O'Keeffe received the payment upon taking early retirement in 2022 but the sum significantly exceeded standard RTÉ redundancy packages.

One dead and dozens injured at Kansas parade shooting One person was killed and at least 21 others were shot — including at least nine children — when a hail of gunfire near Kansas City’s Union Station on Wednesday turned a Super Bowl victory celebration into a scene of chaos. It was unclear what had caused the shooting and who was responsible. Three people had been detained, the Kansas City police chief said at a news conference, adding that investigators had not identified a motive. Chief Stacey Graves of the Kansas City Police Department said one person was dead, and that investigators were still

working to determine exactly how many people had been injured. At least two of the people in custody had been armed, the police said. Kansas City players posted messages of sorrow and support on social media. Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback who led his team to victory on Sunday, said that he was “praying for Kansas City.” Travis Kelce, a tight end, wrote that he was “heartbroken,” adding, “KC, you mean the world to me.” And Marquez Valdes-Scantling, a receiver who caught a touchdown in Sunday’s game, sought to connect with the children who were being treated for injuries, offering to help in “any way I can.”

Fall in GDP see's UK in ‘technical recession’ The UK officially entered a recession on Wednesday after experiencing two consecutive quarters of economic contraction, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Pontins served ‘unlawful act notice’ for Irish discrimination You may recall a news story that broke back in 2021 where Pontins, a UK holiday park chain, used a secret list titled "undesirable guests" to target individuals with specific Irish surnames. Popular Irish surnames such as Boyle, Keefe, Gallagher, O'Donnell, McGuiness, Murphy, and O'Reilly as well as common travelling community names were listed.

Pontins, owned by Britannia Jinky Jersey Limited, labelled Irish Travellers and their associates as ‘undesirables’ and maintained a ‘banned guest’ list of people the company suspected of either being or being associated with Irish Travellers. The business also introduced rules requiring guests to appear on the electoral register, a practice found to be discrimi-

natory against Gypsies and Travellers, who are less likely to be on the register. The practices were originally revealed by a whistle-blower, who shared the list of ‘undesirable guests’ with the EHRC in 2020. This led to the equality watchdog entering into a legally binding agreement with Pontins in 2021, to end the practices and prevent further discrimination. This week the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has served the company with an unlawful act notice after an investigation found multiple instances of race discrimination in breach of the Equality Act 2010, and the holiday park operator has been ordered by Britain’s equality watchdog to stop unlawfully discriminating against Irish Travellers, including by rejecting guests with Irish names and accents.

UK charity makes £1,500 to donation Kilcummin School Kilcummin National School has received funding from The Pavers Foundation recently. The Pavers Foundation was launched in 2018 with an incredible initial donation of £2.5 million from Pavers Shoes and the private estate of the late Catherine Paver. Each year Pavers Shoes gives two percent of net profit, alongside the total profits from the sale of carrier bags in stores, to ensure the Pavers Foundation can continue to make effective and positive changes in local communities and

beyond. Student Council members welcomed Denise Smyth, Pavers, who presented a cheque for £1,500 to Principal, Gillian Sheehan. The funds will go towards a new sensory room at the school. “A special word of thanks to Denise Smyth for assisting us with the application. We are grateful for your support and are delighted with the outcome. The Pavers Foundation’s donation will have an effective and positive change for all at Kilcummin National School,” said Principal Sheehan.

This grim news raises concerns about potential impacts on jobs, consumer spending, and the overall well-being of Ireland's closest trading market. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) shrank by 0.3% between October and December 2023, following a smaller 0.1% decline in the previous quarter. This

steeper-than-expected fall triggered the recession declaration, which is defined as two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth. Several factors likely contributed to the current economic slump including a global economic slowdown due to factors like the war in Ukraine, rising inflation, and tightening monetary policies. Much like Ireland, the UK is grappling with a severe cost of living crisis, fuelled by high energy prices and food costs. This squeeze on household finances dampens consumer spending and business investment.

Money in my pocket but I just can't get no love One lucky man in the US won $1 million just days after breaking up with his girlfriend. He had been preparing for a disappointing Valentine's Day after separating from his girlfriend only three days prior when his world completely changed after buy-

ing a Monopoly 50X scratch-off ticket from a store in Northlake, Illinois. He said that the ticket represented a reversal of fortune in more ways than one. “You can say I haven’t had much luck in the love department but that’s alright because now I really hit the jackpot!”

Healy Rae promises Leo Varadkar a drive in a rally car Deputy Michael Healy Rae promised Taoiseach Leo Varadkar a drive in a rally car if he could help secure funding for the proposed Irish round of the World Rally Championship. The World Rally Championship could visit Ireland between 2025 and 2027 if the necessary government funding is put in place. Motorsport Ireland has indemnified three different locations, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford to host the event. Deputy Healy-Rae raised the funding issue in the Dail this week.

“This will bring a €300 million return to the local economy to the host regions. We earnestly seek the necessary government support and funding to make this World Rally Championship happen,” the Kerry TD told Varadkar in the Dail this week. “We will give you a drive in a rally car if you secure the funding for us. Varadkar replied: “I understand that that submission is currently with the Department and they're going over the numbers to see what level of contribution would be [available]. I will certainly raise it with Minister Martin what was raised in the chamber today.“

Bumper entry for Castleisland-based Forestry rally on Sunday The third running of the Killarney Forestry Rally, in its current format, takes place in Castleisland on Sunday. Run by Killarney and District Motor Club and sponsored by C Wharton Tool Hire and Castleisland Tyre Centre, the event is the opening round of the Sligo Pallets Forest Rally Championship and has attracted an entry of close to 100 cars. “It’s our third year running this forestry Rally and it being the first round of the forestry championship it’s proven to be a very popular rally,” said club chairman Thomas Randles. “I would like to thank our clerk of the course Kevin Flannery and his deputy Adrian Cronin, Liam Cronin, and their team, who after a very busy period working hard running our very successful historic rally [in December] went straight back to work preparing for this forestry rally. Running rallies today takes a huge amount of time work and manpower so thanks again to these people and all our club members who take part.” The rally has attracted a sizeable Kerry entry across all three categories.

JUNIOR 1000

The rally, like all Motorsport Ireland-sanctioned gravel rallies, allows 14-17-year-old drivers to take part under the guiding hand of an experienced co-driver. Four members of the organising club, a record, will take part in this newcomers’ category that runs first on the road ahead of the two-wheel drive and main fourwheel-drive categories. The Kerry-based drivers are Frank Wharton, son of club director and event sponsor Cyrill Warton, David Slattery Jnr who is the son of Dave Sr, the current Moriarty’s Central Car Sales Kingdom of Kerry Rally Champion, and Sean White who is the son of long-time KDMC volunteer John. Slattery Jr and Wharton Jr have employed co-drivers Ger Somers and David

Leslie respectively, the same two navigators who sat with their fathers when they started rallying over 20 years ago. Morgan Moore from County Meath Morgan is also a KDMC member and comes into the sport of rallying after a few seasons of international Karting. “These young drivers are being supported and helped through our KDMC2 youth and development programme led by our vice chairman Mike O’Shea. I wish them every success in their future rally careers,” added Mr Randles.

TWO-WHEEL DRIVE CATEGORY

Father and son due Diarmuid and Darragh Lynch compete in their Ford Escort Mk2. FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE CATEGORY Four Kerry co-drivers feature in the headlining four-wheel-drive entry list. Donagh Crowley is on pacenote duty for Cork’s Gerard Lucey and they will run the same Ford Fiesta Rally5 that they used for the first time on the Cork rallysprint last December. They are seeded at eight for the event. Local man, Cordal’s Denny Greaney resumes his partnership with Limerick’s PJ O Connor in Mitsubishi Lancer E9. Ciara Griffin from Duagh is alongside Aaron Martley from County Laois in an older E7 version of the Lancer – a similar machine to the of Limerick’s Stephen Bawn and his Killarney co-driver John Flemming.

DETAILS

The rally will begin with an official ceremonial start on Castleisland’s Main St on Saturday evening at 630 pm. The first stage, near Rockchapel, is scheduled for 9:37 on Sunday morning. Full route and entry details are available in the official programme, which is being sold locally with all proceeds to four local charities - Killmurry National School, St Francis Special School, St Mary’s National School, Mountcollins and Kerry Parents and Friends.

Why has my Home sum insured increased at renewal date? Many Home Insurance policies have an Inflation Protection condition, which helps policyholders keep up with inflation, by automatically increasing your sums insured annually in line with various indexes like the building cost index issued by the Department of the Environment. This is also known as ‘indexation’ or ‘index linking’ and is to help protect you against inflation. The cost of rebuilding has spiralled over the past few years and index linking has lagged behind the fast pace of the increases in material and labour. Since early in 2023 many insurers have increased the rate of index linking resulting in a 25% increase in the last quarter of 2023.

TO LET: Room for rent in a quiet house share, in Woodlawn area of Killarney. €130 (everything included, no extra charges). Tel: Dan 089 4717500. TO LET: Apartment to let in Coolick, Kilcummin. Single professional. Non-smoker. No

One major insurer in the Irish market has now increased the index linking to 40% for the period March 2024 to June 2024 to allow for 2022 and 2023 increases. The rate will reduce to 27% June to August and then 12% for the remainder of the year. The SCSI issue their annual rebuilding costs survey in September. There is no doubt that rebuilding costs have increased by 40% over the past few years. However if you were proactive in reviewing your sums insured over the last year then the indexation will increase your values and therefore your quote. You might end up overpaying. The best advice is to review your sums insured at renewal time and engage with your broker to discuss. The base rebuilding costs in the Kerry region are running at an average of €246-

€260 a square foot (or €2775 per square metre for a 4 bed detached house of 119 square metres) in the most recently published guide. The rebuilding rates quoted by SCSI are for estate type homes and not one-off homes. The calculation should account for the most recent building regulations, professional fees, demolition costs and VAT, and should make provision for higher than average fittings, built in wardrobes, fences, walls, and garages. It is very important to note that “under insurance” can have a serious effect on any future claims settlements. Most policies include an “Average Clause” which means in the event of “under insurance” any claims settlement can be reduced in value in proportion to the degree of under insurance. Plan to bring construction workers home A new government plan aimed at tackling housing supply will target Irish construction workers living abroad to encourage them to return to help address the housing crisis. An ambitious plan is being launched to increase the numbers of men and women working in the construction industry. Central to the strategy will be an outreach programme to workers in cities such as London, New York and Sydney to establish what the Government could do to incentivise them to come home. Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris has said analysis by his department suggests an extra 50,000 construction workers across all trades will be needed over the next decade to keep up with

housing demand. “We are currently revising those targets in line with the revised housing targets and an increased use of modern methods of construction but we will need more people to work here over the next number of years,” the minister has said. The campaign will use advertising targeted at people working in construction overseas. The department will seek to speak with people in the industry and ask them what would encourage them to return to Ireland. Direct financial incentives are not on the table to attract workers back to the country but the Department of Higher Education is examining what measures could be used to make Ireland a more attractive place to work.

Ironically, it is the housing market, and the chronic lack of supply which may be the biggest hurdle in enticing those construction workers home. Concentrating on who is here at home, a recent ‘’Careers in Construction’’ report found secondary school guidance counsellors, though open to information on trade and construction, are still more focused on encouraging students towards the academic education and training system. The minister is concerned students are given limited exposure to the construction industry and trade apprenticeships while in secondary school. This is particularly the case in all-girls schools, where there are fewer t echnical subjects or modules that could encour-

age students to follow a career in construction. The minister has increased the number of people taking up apprentices since he was appointed to the portfolio four years ago.

Interview preparation I have previously written about CVs and LinkedIn and I now want to focus on the interview process. Being invited to interview for a role that you really want is both exciting and slightly daunting. To give yourself the best possible advantage, you must take the time to prepare and prepare well. So .... what do you do to prepare ... Research ... the company and the interviewers. Don't limit yourself to the company website, look at the social media and LinkedIn feeds. Get some sense of the company's strategy and culture. Read the job description carefully... and then read it again and again. Identify where your skills and experience align with what the company is looking for. Don't panic if there are areas in the job description that you have little or no experience in .... this is where you can and will grow and develop in the role. Think about the questions you could be asked on work/projects you have undertaken. Be prepared to talk about your experience - this is your opportunity to demonstrate your skills and achievements. Be prepared to be challenged - you maybe asked something like 'if you were to repeat that project, what would you do do

differently'? There maybe a list of competencies on the job description. These could include teamwork, communication, problem solving, adaptability. You maybe asked to provide an example of say when you were a part of a successful team and your role in it. You should always have examples of where you have demonstrated these competencies. Always have some questions ready that you can ask the interviewers e.g. about the reason for the vacancy, what are the objectives for say the first 3 months. Be on time for the interview and present yourself as a professional. It is important to try and develop some rapport with the interviewers - remember companies employ people, not CVs! If you check out my Instagram page, you will find more information on successful interviews, questions you may be asked and how to answer them successfuly. Next week - career development and promotion! If there are other topics you would like me to cover then please don't hesitate to contact me on 085 169 3541 or teresa@meetyourcareercoach.com

A mix of young and old came including TikTok star Séaghan Ó Súilleabháin who is known by his social media name ‘The Kerry Cowboy” attended and he gave a rousing rendition of ’An Poc ar Buile’. “What started as a group of us who had been friends in the Sem wanting to speak Irish together has snowballed into a vibrant celebration of the language. Kerry boys on the hunt for results as LOI season gets underway LEAGUE OF IRELAND FIRST DIVISION

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Cork City v Kerry FC Friday 7.45pm Turners Cross This is what the dream was all about. A Kerry soccer team competing in the League of Ireland, going up against the big guns. Whatever the outcome, it will be a proud moment for everyone involved in the Kerry FC project when they take to the field at Turners Cross on Friday night. And make no mistake about it, despite their recent fall from grace, Cork City are still a big gun – certainly the biggest gun in this corner of the country by some distance. The three-time league champions and four-time cup winners have been a topflight club for most of their 40-year existence. Last season they were relegated from the Premier Division via that playoff defeat to their neighbours to the east, Waterford United. The Rebel Army know that only one thing could surpass that low: defeat to their upstart neighbours to the west. So, how are Kerry fixed ahead of the big kick-off? Unsurprisingly, the winter break has been a busy one for the likes of Billy Dennehy, who is now the club’s sporting director after stepping down as manager, and Killarney man Conor McCarthy, who has become the youngest head coach in the history of the league at 25.

Several players have departed to be replaced by fresh talent and on the surface the Tralee-based outfit appear to have made some positive moves, although naturally time will tell. Defender Andy Spain has joined from Treaty United and the fact that the Kildare man was promptly installed as the new club captain underlines how important McCarthy and co. think he will be to the team. They have also brought in Croation goalkeeper Antonio Tuta from Finn Harps and 19-year-old striker Victor Udeze from Dublin. Udeze scored the winning goal on his debut against Cobh Ramblers in the Munster Senior Cup last week. Significantly, a number of young players who showed good promise in 2023 have been rewarded with professional contracts, perhaps most notably former Killarney Celtic striker Ryan Kelliher, who was Kerry’s top scorer in their first ever LOI season. Another former Celt, Daniel Okwute, has also signed up for 2024. This year the goal for Kerry is clear: win more games and finish higher up the table. Where better to get the ball rolling than at Turners Cross?

16.02.2024 On the surface, Micheál Burns' decision to walk away from Kerry might seem a little rash. After all, Kerry have only played two competitive matches this year and the 27-year-old started one of them. But a closer look at his career in green and gold reveals that getting dropped for the Monaghan game a fortnight ago is the latest in a long line of setbacks that would take their toll on any footballer. They say you make your own luck in sport and I’m sure Micheál himself would accept that he could have made more of some of the opportunities that he got, but all things considered he was unfortunate enough at times.

DEBUT

Burns made his debut against Donegal in 2018, the same day Eamonn Fitzmaurice handed David Clifford and Seánie O’Shea their first starts at senior level. The diminutive but well-built wing forward kicked a point and he kept his place throughout the entire league campaign, scoring in six out of seven games (0-9 in total). It was an impressive return for a rookie. However, he was still subbed off in six of those games, and this pattern would continue for much of his Kerry career. He started three times in the 2018 championship and scored 0-2 against both Cork and Kildare, yet he was taken off in all three matches. 2019 began with Crokes’ run to the All-Ireland Club final so he didn’t feature for Kerry in the league. His one start all year – against Meath in the Super 8s – ended on bad terms as Peter Keane subbed him off four minutes before half-time. Burns was visibly upset as he sat on the bench; it seemed like a harsh decision at the time. He didn’t play again that season. The following year, 2020, turned out to be an annus horribilis for all of us but it actually started well for Burns. For my money he played his best football for his county in the pre-pandemic league matches. He wasn’t really known for his kicking at the time but he had clearly been working on his shooting because he came out with all guns blazing. After coming off the bench against Dublin in Croke Park, he started and scored in the next four matches, registering 0-2 against Galway, 0-1 against Tyrone, 0-3 against Meath and 0-1 against Mayo. (He was still taken off in three of those games.) Covid was a disaster full stop but it couldn’t have come at a worse time for the industrious half forward from Killarney. He started both of the outstanding league games when the season resumed in October but he couldn’t recapture that early season form. He didn’t see action in that disastrous defeat to Cork in the Munster semi-final as Keane started the match with a midfielder and a back in the half forward line.

FRUSTRATION

He started two games in the shortened

2021 season (against Dublin in the league and Tipperary in the championship) and once again his year ended in frustration when Keane left him lingering on the bench during Kerry’s extra time defeat to Tyrone in the All-Ireland semi-final. Burns might have been expecting his name to be called when David Clifford went down with an injury at the end of normal time – he was the last remaining forward on the bench – but instead Kerry turned to Paul Geaney, who had already been subbed off earlier in the game. Burns was eventually brought on as Kerry’s tenth sub with just four minutes of extra time to go. Whatever way you spin it, that must have been tough to take. Jack O’Connor returned in 2022 and Burns hasn’t started a championship match since, although he did come on when Kerry beat Galway in the All-Ireland final. He also saw game time in each of Kerry’s last five championship outings of 2023. He didn’t score in those appearances last year and the lack of scoring threat from Kerry’s half forwards was a talking point at season’s end, but it could have been quite different for Burns had things gone his way. He might have had a tap-in goal against Tyrone if Seánie O’Shea was feeling generous, and against Derry he was all alone and in a better position when David Clifford decided to stop up and take a point to give Kerry a two-point lead late on. They were small moments but if they fell his way they could have shifted the narrative in Burns’ favour. He played against Derry in the 2024 season opener but he didn’t have his best game and was substituted at half-time. Then he didn’t play against Monaghan the following weekend. After experiencing an uncommon amount of setbacks in his six-year career, this was evidently the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Burns steps away after series of tough setbacks The news that Micheál Burns has left the Kery panel raised a few eyebrows this week as Jack O’Connor indicated that the Dr Crokes man was unhappy with the amount of game time he was getting.

COMMITMENTS

No doubt some will say that it’s an honour to even be on the Kerry panel and there’s no shame in playing second fiddle to the calibre of forwards that Burns was up against. They’re right, of course, but that doesn’t mean that the man has to be content with not playing. The commitments that come with intercounty football are enormous. It’s hard enough when you’re getting the rewards you feel you deserve; it’s much harder when you’re not. Burns will go back to his club and I’m sure he will be an important player for them for years to come. As for Kerry, having a squad member depart mid-season is ideally something that you wouldn’t want to happen but if a guy isn’t happy, maybe it’s for the best. I’m sure Micheál’s friends on the panel will be sad to see him go but it shouldn’t be a big distraction. They are a professional group and it will be business as usual against Mayo on Saturday night. The wheel keeps turning' with this: For Burns and Kerry alike, life goes on.

Eamonn Fitzgerald on the difference between good and bad versions of Ireland’s Call and Amhrán na bhFiann Stevie Mulrooney stole the show at the Aviva on Sunday last where it was more or less a stroll in the stadium for Ireland, defeating Italy 36-0 in the Guinness-sponsored 6 Nations game. The 8-year-old Kilkenny boy sang Ireland’s Call before the big international match, impressing the Irish rugby team and fans with his confident and amazing performance. He was invited to sing by flanker Josh van der Flier after he sang the same anthem on The Late Late Toy Show. He said he loved the experience, and his favourite players are Peter O’Mahony and Bundee Aki. Those are two good picks by the garsún, key men on the road to the title. Yes, Ireland called it well to invite him to sing with a confidence that belies his years. Ireland’s Call was written by Phil Coulter, that brilliant composer of so many hit songs including The Town I Love So Well, a tribute to his native city of Derry. I don’t think he would say Londonderry. He was commissioned by the IRFU in 1995 to create a song that could be sung by both

nationalist and unionist supporters and players. The song is used as a national anthem by some sports teams representing the island of Ireland, especially the men’s rugby union team. Rugby is a 32-county sport catering for people from diverse political backgrounds and those long historical traditions. Some players and supporters are from Northern Ireland and may not identify with Amhrán na bhFiann. The GAA is also a 32-county organisation, but it is always Amhrán na Fiann that is sung before its games. I hope that when Amhrán na bhFiann is sung in Austin Stack Park tomorrow night before the Kerry v Mayo league game the singer will do our national anthem justice. It is wonderful to see and hear a live rendering, but far too often the singers may have the air correct but make a real hames of the words. Either they don’t understand the lyrics or the pronunciation is way off the mark and unacceptable There are exceptions, of course, and I have heard some good singers who get

Our anthems deserve respectful renditions it correct, but they are in the minority. I was in the middle of a huge contingent of Derry followers from Maghera before the start of the Kerry-Derry game a few weeks back. They were in high spirits and the banter was great. Was it any wonder, as their club had won the All-Ireland Club final a week prior? “One minute to Amhrán na BhFiann,” came out over the public address system. What a change! They took off the green and gold woolly hats, their club colours, and the red and white scarves of Derry. Then a 90-degree turn to face the Tricolour at the Killarney end and standing to attention they sang our national anthem as it should be sung, with pride and reverence. They didn’t trail off at, “Le gunna scréach faoi lámhach na bpiléar, Seo libh canaig

Amhrán na bhFiann”. Neither did the players, standing in unified pride until the song was concluded. No breakaway. No way. They gave it everything to the end. Reverential nationalism in live action was a joy to behold. I feel that the presenters of the GAA games and whoever looks after such logistics as providing the national anthem should go for the safer bet and play Seán Ó Sé’s wonderful version if there isn’t a singer available competent in voice and pronunciation. (That’s Seán from Cork and not Seán from Kenmare Shamrocks.) The prerecorded song will be correct and there will be no slurring over words which some singers do not understand. Notwithstanding all of those issues, some singers do it justice, but only some.

Amhrán na bhFiann was written in English by Peadar Kearney and Patrick Heeney in 1909 or 1910 and translated into Irish by Liam Ó Rinn in 1923 for the new Irish Free State. The music was composed by Heeney with the help of Kearney and Seán Rogan. The song was first published in 1912 and sung by rebels during the Easter Rising of 1916. It was adopted as the official anthem of the Irish Free State in 1926, so it has been with us for a long time. It became a great rallying song used by the internees at the other Croke Park in Frongach, North Wales where Dick Fitzgerald organised intercounty matches for those in captivity after The Rising. There is also something special about a packed Millennium Stadium at Cardiff when Welsh rugby supporters sing Hen

Wlad Fy Nhadau, often referred to as The Land of our Father. It was the first national anthem to be sung at the start of a sporting event in 1905; that predated the use of the national anthem by the GAA. Cardiff Stadium also has a retractable roof. Will that be constructed in Croke Park some day? I hope not. Use that money to promote the game at club level and avoid another storm in a teacup about the SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh conundrum. Croke Park has a capacity of just over 82,000 whereas the stadium in Cardiff fills out at just under 80,00O. Both venues provide that goose pimples effect and the hair standing on the back of your neck when the respective anthems are sung. It is always a special moment.

Playoffs a real possibility as Lakers sink Vikings On Saturday last, Leondre Washington bagged 35 points as the Scotts Lakers beat the Waterford Vikings to move into the playoff positions in the Division 1 Southern Conference. Washington was in imperious form for the home team, ably assisted by Braden Bell (21 points), but speaking to club PRO Enda Walshe post-match he was quick to credit his teammates and coach for their efforts. "Rui Sarvia did well defensively, Eoin Carroll got some big rebounds, Braden and Mark Sheehan… Everyone put in a shift,” Washington said. “The coach got us riled up in the final quarter and that put a lot of energy into us." For his part, Coach Brian Clarke urged his players to build on this 77-73 victory as they approach the business end of the season. "It's a big win for us to push ahead of Waterford and we've three big games now against Team NorthWest, the Titans and the Killarney Cougars in the next few weeks. We have to keep pushing on and striving to improve." All the excitement in this game was jam packed into the final quarter as the Lakers eventually overcame their early offensive struggles to get over the line. They depended on the grit and determination of Carroll, Saravia and Paul Clarke in the opening exchanges; the trio had 30 rebounds between them on the night. Bell enjoyed a terrific duel with Idris Joyner; the Vikings’ talisman finished up with 36 points despite being on the losing team. The opening quarter saw both sides slow to settle with the visitors 10-8 ahead after five minutes. Joyner alongside his compatriot Jack Ryan carried the bulk of the threat in the early stages while Bell and Washington got the Lakers up and running. Carroll took delivery of a nice pass from Washington to get off the mark and two quick baskets from Captain Paul Clarke put the Lakers ahead 14-12. Joyner went on a spree to push the Vikings into the lead at quarters end, 22-19, with Washington replying. The Lakers made a better start to the second period with Bell, Washington and Saravia all on target. Carroll popped up again and the Lakers led 34-26 with 2.27 remaining in the half. But again Joyner sparked up and with the help of Daniel

Sheehan the gap was closed to two by half time 36-34, with Jamie O’Sullivan having the last word for the Lakers. The third quarter belonged to the Vikings, with Sheehan and Kavanagh bringing them back into contention. That point was emphasised by Joyner and Ryan who both struck for threes and Denis Miculescu came off the bench to put them 46-40 clear. Bell who was closely guarded by Joyner all evening, Saravia, and Washington brought the sides level at 50 apiece with the quarter drawing to a close. But again Joyner stole in to put the Vikings in the box seat heading into the final period. The Vikings looked to be turning their ship for home when they built up a tenpoint lead, 73-63, with four minutes to go. This did so thanks to the promptings of Illia Prikhno, Sheehan and Joyner and even though the Lakers battled away, it seemed the harder they tried, the worse it got. But then came the fireworks. Washington sank two free throws and as the defensive intensity went up tenfold, the Vikings were forced into numerous turnovers. Bell and Washington brought it down to a two-point game with 1.13 to go, a lead that was halved by Carroll from the charity stripe. Bell then broke clear to put the Lakers in front for what felt like the first time in a lifetime, as the Vikings lost huge momentum, highlighted by both Sheehan and Kavanagh getting fouled out. Carroll pulled down a huge rebound and fed Washington who was fouled. He duly doubled the lead to two with 12 seconds on the clock. The Vikings launched one last raid to salvage the game but the ball was again turned over and Bell again raced clear to stuff home the ball, bringing down a huge sense of relief in the process. The win moves the Lakers onto eight wins and into the top four. Provided they keep themselves ahead of the Waterford side in the weeks ahead, they will earn their place at the end of season playoffs. Team NorthWest are next on the agenda with the game tipping off at 7.30pm on Saturday in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. The St Paul’s women’s team are also in action at the same venue on Saturday. The recently crowned Southern Conference champs play the Limerick Sport Huskies at 4.30pm.

SPORT NOTES

Killarney Athletic U13 DIVISION 1: Killarney Athletic B 5-0 Listowel B. Our young blues were up against Listowel B in a game that was due to be played away but had to be reversed to our pitch due to the Listowel pitch being deemed unplayable. The boys were fired up and eager to get going as the KO time approached and took to the game with great intensity. This was something that had been missing as of late and was a welcome sight to behold. Our blues quickly took the initiative with Nathan Jordan latching onto a mis-controlled ball by the opposition, firing us into the lead on 14mins. Athletic were starting to really move the ball well, stringing together pass after pass and it wasn’t long before Malachy Audley played a through ball into Aidan Hickey’s path who finished nicely into the bottom corner on 22mins. The lads weren’t finished there though, with Nathan Jordan picking out the lively Aidan Hickey for his second and taking us into a 3-0 lead as the half time whistle blew. The 2nd half was as dominant as the first with the Listowel team finding it increasingly difficult to live with the relentless pressure and intricate passing the lads were producing. Two more goals were to follow in quick succession, with Malachy Audley once again finding Aidan Hickey to help complete his hat trick before Malachy Audley found the net himself after a brilliant through ball by Jack Gleeson 2 minutes later. The game was to end 5-0 and was without doubt the lads best performance of the season so far, all the lads gave a great performance but, in the end, it was a split decision between two of them for man of the match. MOTM - Torin Lyne & Malachy Audley. Great performance lads and big thanks to Listowel for a sporting game. U15 DIVISION 1: Athletic 1-2 Listowel. Our U15s took on Listowel and came away empty handed. Our depleted squad started brightly and went 1-0 up after 25 mins through a great Jayden free kick. HT 1-0. At half time we made some tactical changes, and this didn’t work to our advantage with Listowel scoring two quick goals… our boys battled hard but, in the end, Listowel held on for a deserved 2-1 win. Thanks to the parents for the support and Brian Spillane for reffing the game. That’s only our second loss of the season by the smallest margin and we’ll dust ourselves down and go again in two weeks’ time. U13 PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 0-2 Killorglin. After a dominating performance in our last game against Listowel, we didn't hit the same levels today and lost out to the better team. We battled hard and kept pushing, but to no avail against a strong Killorglin side. Thanks, and well done to Killorglin for a good sporting game. We move on and look to get back to winning ways in our next game. U13 DIVISION 1: Killarney Athletic B 5-0 Listowel B. A dominant performance by

our U13B’s today as they came away with the 3 points. The lads played with a real intensity throughout, moved the ball very well and kept their first clean sheet of the season too. Thanks very much to Listowel for a sporting game. Goals: Aidan Hickey, Nathan Jordan Malachy Audley. U13 DIVISION 2 SOUTH: Killarney Athletic C 1-1 Mastergeeha B. A strong performance by our young blues this morning as they welcomed Mastergeeha to Woodlawn. The teams shared the points in the end with Athletic having the majority of the possession and were unlucky not to find that final finish for the win. Credit to the Mastergeeha keeper who gave a brilliant performance between the sticks. Thanks again to Mastergeeha for a sporting game. Goals - Olek Prinz.

Killarney Legion GAA EAST KERRY SUPERLEAGUE: The Senior Men travelled to Rathbeg last Friday night and came away with another win in the East Kerry Superleague. Shaun Keane, stationed at full forward struck for an early goal before Rathmore dominated the next fifteen minutes, hitting 1-4 without reply. Will Shine snapped that dominance with a point, soon followed by further

minors from Sam Benson, Eoghan O'Sullivan and Shaun Keane, leaving the hosts 1-5 to 1-4 ahead at half time. With the wind to the backs Finbarr Murphy and Ryan O'Grady turned the game around at 1-8 to 1-6 before Rathmore struck for another goal. But Will Shine, Danny Sheahan, Ryan O'Grady and Finbarr Murphy all kept the scoreboard ticking to help run out 1-13 to 2-8 winners. Team: Brian Kelly, Peter O’Sullivan, Darragh O’Doherty, Rob Leen, Cian Gammell, Darragh Fleming, Jonathan Lyne, Jamie Alade, Darragh Lyne, Eoghan O’Sullivan, Will Shine, Micheal Devlin, Sam Benson, Shaun Keane, Mark Heffernan. CLUB GYM: With 2024 to look forward to both on and off the field, as well as the new season only around the corner for all our teams we wish to bring some changes to the attention of our membership for the year ahead in regard to the Club Gym. We are pleased to announce that there will be a fresh investment in the Gym facilities over the coming weeks which will make the Killarney Legion GAA Club Gym one of the best Gyms in the country. With this will come a change to membership pricing, options, access and availability. Up until now the gym membership was purchased alongside the club membership for the year as one sum of €200. This will no longer be the case for a number of reasons outlined below: A standalone set price for the gym €120 (50 Euro for Youth Membership) for the year. Gym membership purchasable yearround (Which was not possible before). Gym membership running 12 months from date of purchase. Access for all club members not just players. Regulation of clubhouse & gym membership through the use of fob system. Simply put each member will be getting a far better product for €10 per month. Of course, each member will have to abide by gym rules (see below) as well as complete a health declaration form and waiver agreement. (See below). Our aim with this project is to improve the club both on the field and off whilst also making the clubhouse itself a more sociable and enticing outlet for all our members. Once completed and there is proof of club and gym membership being paid a fob will be supplied to you by gym management to give you access to the clubhouse and gym. All aforementioned paperwork will need to be signed and agreed upon to begin using the gym. Those aged u15-u18 will need a parents signature and must abide all rules and regulations laid out in the gym rules and declaration forms. As a club we a striving to ensure that the Killarney Legion Club caters and performs in all facets to allow our members young and old to enjoy both on and off field life as a member of the Killarney Legion. We wholeheartedly believe that through club gym and future developments will help us in doing so. We

appreciate all our members for their support now and into the future.
