Killarney cycleway plan another step closer to reality The ambitious Killarney cycleway project – almost four years in the making – took another step closer to reality this week. This year's allocation of Active Travel funding has been announced by the National Transport Authority with almost €2 million euro allocated to Killarney.

A total of €3.5 million has been approved for Active Travel initiatives in Kerry and it will bring plans to develop several new cycle routes in Killarney closer to fruition.

“It has been three years since the cycle network for Killarney was proposed and consultation ended, now we need to see work on the ground,” said Local Green Party Candidate, Diarmaid Griffin. “Killarney is a busy town and has issues with vehicular traffic. Anything that en-

courages active travel and reduces traffic should be seized upon by Kerry County Council.” “One of the best ways to see Killarney and the adjoining National Park is by bike. The funding for cycleways and walkways is there and I would see it as a priority to get the work done and make active travel safer for Tourists and Locals.” While no start day for the projects has been announced it is hoped at least some wil start this year. “Work is set to begin in quarter one or two of this year. I hope a start date will be announced soon,” added Griffin.

Culinary showcase brings best chefs to Great Southern Apprentices from across Ireland converged at The Great Southern Hotel to compete in the National Commis Chef Apprenticeship Competition on Wednesday. Organised by the Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB) in partnership with the Irish Hotel Federation and other industry stakeholders, this event not only displayed exceptional culinary skills but also shed light on a crucial solution to Ireland's ongoing hospitality staff crisis. The participating apprentices represent a diverse cross-section of emerging talent from Kerry ETB, Cork ETB, Tipperary ETB, Limerick and Clare ETB, Kilkenny and Carlow ETB, Kildare and Wicklow ETB, Cavan & Monaghan ETB, Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim ETB, City of Dublin ETB and promises to showcase a melting pot of creativity and passion Beyond the competition, the event offered a unique opportunity for attendees to gain valuable insights into the world of apprenticeship. Live cookery and display competitions were complemented by inspiring talks from prominent figures in the culinary world, aiming to address the current challenges faced by the hospitality sector. Among the highlights were guest speakers Mike Tweedie, Head Chef of the Oak Room, and Eddie Attwell, Head Chef of Eccles Hotel Glengarriff. Tweedie and Attwell shared first-hand how the Commis Chef Apprenticeship played a pivotal role in growing their teams, offering a tangible success story for businesses considering similar initiatives. A panel discussion featured culinary lead-

ers John Drummond, Brendan Byrne, Emer Corridan, and Odhran Lucey who underscored the importance of mentoring and training the next generation of chefs. Their insights contributed to the broader conversation about the role apprenticeships play in ensuring the future success of the hospitality industry. Mallory Higgins, National Apprenticeship Programme Coordinator who led the event, emphasised its significance in addressing the current hospitality staff crisis in Ireland: She said: "The Commis Chef Apprenticeship Showcase is not just a competition; it's a celebration of the industry's upcoming talent and a practical solution to the staffing challenges faced by the hospitality sector in Ireland. By highlighting success stories like Mike Tweedie and Eddie Attwell, we aim to inspire more businesses to invest in apprenticeships and grow their own skilled teams." Mike Tweedie, Head Chef of the Oak Room, added: "The apprenticeship programme gives the apprentice the foundations they need and what we do in the restaurant is reinforce what they learned in college. I have two great chefs from the apprenticeship programme already and I have just taken on a third. One day I hope they are better than me and have their own Michelin star, that means I have done my job, and it is a great thing for me to watch personally.”

Fiona Crowley and Tommy Buckley are just two friendships made during Killarney Musical Society's rehearsals this year.

Enduring friendships behind the success of Killarney Musical Society

Rehearsals for Killarney Musical Society’s ‘Michael Collins, A Musical Drama’ are proving to be a great social outlet for the 63 cast members. A total of 26 men and 37 ladies will take to the stage at the INEC Arena on March 5 to 7. One such cast member is Tommy Buckley, who joined Killarney Musical Society this year. “He is new to the area and thought it would be a great way to meet people with similar interests,” said PRO Linda O’Donoghue. “He is enjoying the process of the musical coming together. He said it is a big commitment, but it is very exciting and rewarding. It is an interesting show because

it brings an important part of our history to life. Tommy plays one of the volunteers and his passion and enthusiasm match that of Michael Collins himself.” Fiona Crowley is a well established and very talented member of Killarney Musical Society. “One of the biggest attractions for her are the people and the wonderful friendships you make there,” said Linda. “She spends all day working in her very busy stage school and then comes out four nights a week and some Sundays to practice for our show. She really loves musical theatre. Fiona is one of the players and narrators in this year’s show and she finds the part very challenging but very rewarding. Every day you learn is a good day and she said she is definitely learning.”

ANNUAL PANCAKE CHARITY DAY: Killarney Soroptimist Club’s annual ‘Charity Pancake’ day will, this year, raise funds for St Mary’s of the Angels. This year’s event will take place at the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Shrove Tuesday, February 13. Always considered one of the highlights of the Soroptimist Club’s programme of events each year, the 2024 edition was launched at the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Monday this week.

Echoes of Killarney Past this St Patrick’s Day A nostalgic reflection on Killarney’s proud past, including its rich history, folklore and legends, will be the focus of this year’s gala St Patrick’s Day parade in the town. Echoes of Killarney Past is the theme chosen for the annual celebration of the national feast day with the spotlight falling, in particular, on three historical features in the town: Inisfallen Island and the tales of the monks who significantly shaped Killarney’s history; Ross Castle, a wonderful landmark, which showcases a real symbol of Killarney’s resilience; Queen Victoria’s visit in 1861 with a focus on capturing the pomp and grandeur of the occasion. The theme for the Killarney parade will evolve over the coming years to celebrate Killarney's present and future but, in 2024, the focus will be very much on the town’s historical past. “This year our goal is to elevate the Killarney event to become the premier regional parade outside of Dublin and we

are counting on the support of the public and the adoption of the theme to achieve this,” said St Patrick’s Festival Chairperson, Jason Clifford. A fun zone and live music will add to the magical atmosphere on the streets of Killarney on St Patrick’s Day and, to ensure full inclusivity, plans are at an advanced stage to provide an enhanced area at the Anam Centre on East Avenue Road

where the focus will be on accessibility, autism-friendly and providing a quiet space. The bumper festival, as always, is being organised by a team of volunteers guided by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce in partnership with Kerry County Council and with support from Fáilte Ireland. Several major events have been planned

for the festival including a star-studded concert in St Mary’s Church of the Sloes, on Saturday, March 16th, featuring renowned pianist Frank McNamara who will elevate many Irish classics to new heights. Joining him on the night will be celebrated soprano Megan Ruby Walsh, accomplished RTÉ Concert Orchestra violinist Anne Phelan and lead dancer with Riverdance Tomás Ó Sé who will astonish the audience with his rhythmic footwork and dynamic movements, showcasing the unparalleled beauty of Irish dance. Later that evening, as the sun sets and the stars emerge on the eve of St Patrick’s Day, Frank McNamara will perform Chopin by Candlelight which will be meticulously crafted to showcase the breadth of Chopin's genius and it promises an immersive experience that will linger in the memory long after the final notes have faded. The concerts are being organised in conjunction with the Dunloe Hotel and Gardens and the Europe Hotel and Resort. On the Monday after the St Patrick’s parade, at 12 noon, there will be a real feast of fun in store at the Great Duck Dash on the River Deenagh at Knockreer with proceeds going to the St Francis Special School in Beaufort. At 2.30pm that day seanchaí Ray O’Sullivan will present Myths & Legends for Families at the Anam Centre on East Avenue Road and at 5.00pm he will reflect on Echoes of Killarney Past at the same venue.

Weldon defends fulfilling Basketball Ireland’s tie with Israel The Killarney-based coach of the Irish Women’s basketball team said that Basketball Ireland’s match with Israel on Thursday night had to go ahead to protect the future of the sport in Ireland. Last year James Weldon was reappointed as head coach of the Ireland women’s team for this year’s FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers. The Kerry native, who was first appointed in November 2018 and took charge of the team in January 2019, helped Ireland to a silver medal at the 2021 FIBA Women’s European Championship for Small Countries. Ireland were due to play Israel last night in a neutral venue in Riga, Latvia. There were calls for Ireland to withdraw from the match given the current conflict in Gaza. However, if Ireland did not play the match they could face fines and bans from the competition. “We are all very concerned about the events unfolding in Gaza and are extremely sympathetic to the dreadful situation that people are having to deal with. Since the conflict arose, Basketball Ireland has been in regular correspondence with FIBA Europe,

where we have raised strong concerns about these fixtures with Israel, including the option to not play the games, however FIBA Europe is insistent that we fulfil the fixtures,” said a Basketball Ireland statement. The governing body said that it the match did not go ahead it “would be subject to a fine from FIBA Europe of up to €80,000 should we fail to fulfil the fixture with Israel in Riga next month. An additional fine of up to €100,000 would also be levied should we not play the return fixture later this year. Basketball Ireland would also be removed from FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers and also barred from competing in the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2027 Qualifiers, resulting in an effective five-year ban from competing at international level for our senior women’s team.” Speaking ahead of the match Weldon told a press conference: “All the players, whether they are in Latvia or not, feel the same way, but is it going to make a blind bit of difference if we make a grand gesture? The simple answer to that is no, and I am not prepared to destroy my sport for a gesture that will have no impact.”

Irene McCarthy has been appointed Beaufort Golf Club’s first female president while the club’s new Lady Captain is Maire Ni Loinsigh and the new Men’s Captain is Owen Nolan.

The Awards recognise Ireland’s hospitality ambassadors, the people and businesses throughout the country who put Irish tourism on the global stage through the warmth of welcome and quality of service provided to our international visitors. Four Killarney hotels were recognised and received merits in the hotel category. The Brehon, Great Southern Killarney, Killarney Plaza Hotel and Killarney Avenue Hotel were rated highly by CIE Tours guests.

Well-known visitor attractions were also honoured for their high level of visitor experience with Tangney Tours Jaunting Car and Killarney Horse & Carriage Tours both on the winners' list. “Kerry remains one of our most popular destinations and it’s easy to see why. Cancer support charity celebrates St Brigid’s Day with fashion event A stunning fashion event led by two of Kerry’s most renowned fashion designers kicked off St Brigid’s Weekend celebrations in Killarney last Thursday. Billed as the fashion highlight of 2024 in Kerry, Don O’Neill and Colin Horgan took centre stage at Killarney’s INEC Arena for Recovery Haven Kerry’s Designer Fashion Showcase, Colin Horgan was the star attraction of the event, showcasing a number of pieces from his expansive collection, while beloved Ballyheigue designer Don O’Neill - the charity’s newly appointed Patron - showcased a select few pieces from his fashion archive. Don explained that hosting the event taking on the auspicious 1500th anniversary of St Brigid’s Day is a wonderful way to celebrate this extraordinary saint and all she achieved during her remarkable lifetime. “Brigid is a role model for the ages, inspiring us with her compassion, her

hospitality, her generosity, her skills as a healer and a teacher, her wisdom, her respect for our life giving planet and living in harmony with mother nature - a peacemaker and diplomat, a model of equality recognizing and treating women and men as equals, as she inspired generations to emulate her and follow in her footsteps,” Don said. The event was MC’d by legendary RTE broadcaster, Mary Kennedy, who also facilitated an exclusive Q&A session with both designers, while event producer, Norma O’Donoghue, secured some of the country’s top designers and local boutiques to feature, including Catriona Hanley, Marion Murphy Cooney, Tina Griffin, Frances Fogarty, Cathy Troth, Carol Kennelly, MacBees, Scarlet, the Strand House and Jasmine.

NEWS Maryann Heidtke is a Novice winner with camera club 18

There was a great variety of photos in the Novice category in Killarney Camera Club’s recent Black and White competition. Last week we published the winning photo in both the Unrestricted and Novice categories, by Iryna Halaieva. The runner up in the Novice category was Maryann Heidtke with this unique photo of Gallarus Oratory in Dingle. She said: “The photo was taken on a crisp cold January night. A torch was used to ‘light paint’ one outside struc-

ture and one to light up the inside. The sky was perfectly clear that night showcasing Orion's constellation directly above the oratory, this just added to the magical beauty of Gallarus.” Gallarus is the only intact specimen of its type and is the best preserved ancient church in Ireland.

Kelly pays tribute to the late John Bruton Killarney-based MEP Seán Kelly and leader of Fine Gael in the European Parliament has paid tribute to former Taoiseach John Bruton who has passed away on Monday. "I am very sad to learn of the passing of John Bruton, a former leader of Fine Gael, former Taoiseach and former EU Ambassador to the United States. He was a man of integrity and courage. He called things out as they were. He had an innate diplomatic skill and was highly respected at EU level.’said MEP Kelly. "He worked tirelessly on peace and restoration in Northern Ireland. He was a

strong European and believed in the value of the EU. In fact, it was on the side lines of an EU summit that John Bruton and John Major discussed the idea of a talks process that would eventually lead to the Good Friday Agreement being achieved. So, it is very poignant that his passing follows the restoration of power-sharing at Stormont, with all the hope that brings for stability and peace. He leaves behind a legacy to be proud of. "John was a friend and a confidante. I will always remember his infectious laugh and great personality. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.”

The RSA’s free Check it Fits service is coming to Killarney The Road Safety Authority has announced that its face-to-face child car seat checking service – Check it Fits – will visit Killarney next Tuesday.

The free check will take place at Aldi Killarney between 10.00 am - 5.30 pm on February 13. Car seats may seem simple to install, but the installation is often easy to get wrong. The RSA have found that almost a third of seats fitted incorrectly needed major adjustments. To help address this problem, the RSA Check it Fits service will be visiting to help parents and ensure car seats and restraints are correctly fitted. Over half of child car seats (56%) checked by the Road Safety Authority’s Check it Fits service were incorrectly fitted and needed some type of adjustment to make them a safe fit. If a child’s car seat isn’t fitted correctly, it could lead to a serious or fatal injury in the event of a collision.

“While the RSA’s experience with its Check it Fits service shows that half of child car seats are fitted incorrectly, worryingly, it found that 30% of these needed a major adjustment to fix them. For example, the seat being excessively loose so as to make the fitting almost ineffective. 67% were minor adjustments, for example, the fitting being loose or a twisted seatbelt,” said Ron Richardson for the RSA. “Having a correctly fitted car seat is a simple measure parents, grandparents and guardians can take to ensure children are safe while travelling by car. I would encourage people to visit the Check it Fits service when it comes to Kerry and give yourself the peace of mind that your children are travelling safely.” The service takes between 10-15 minutes and runs from 10.00am – 5.30pm, it is free of charge and offers parents and guardians reassurance that their child is safe while travelling in the car. It is a walkin service, no appointment needed.

GP crisis in South Kerry Social Democrats launch The fear felt by people in South Kerry due to the drastic drop in the number of doctors available to them following recent retirements, is palpable according to Local Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill. Councillor has attended meetings recently in regard to the crisis, has contacted the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly and Minister Norma Foley and has raised it at Kerry County Council meetings. “The Health Service Executive (HSE) have advertised for replacement GPs,

but to date, they have been unsuccessful. There used to be 6 GPs practicing in the region up to recently, but this is now about to drop to 2 for a population that has grown to 8,500 people approximately. It is not sustainable that so few doctors could service the region and it is unsafe for the residents there,” said Councillor Cahill. "I am being contacted by concerned constituents every single day about this hugely important issue who believe that in relatively short period of time that there may be only one GP covering the entire region.”

historic bid for Kerry County Council seats The Social Democrats Kerry branch has announced the candidacy of Tim Clifford and Mistura Oyebanji for the Kerry County Council elections, marking a milestone in the party's efforts to bring about progressive change. With party leader Holly Cairns in attendance, this initiative underscores a growing momentum for the party and its vision for a fairer, more inclusive society in Kerry. At a campaign launch in the Killarney Plaza Hotel, the Social Democrats introduced Clifford for the Kenmare Municipal District and Oyebanji for the Tralee Municipal District. This event, highlighted by enthusiastic support from Holly Cairns, signals a new era of political engagement and ambition for the Social Democrats in Kerry. Tim Clifford said: "Joining the Social Democrat Party last year was the first time I have ever nailed my colours to the mast of a political party, as I never felt any other party had the right roadmap for Ireland. To me, the driver always seemed to end up going around in circles. With the Social Democrats I felt finally here was a party I could get on board with, a party who knows where we are going and how to get there. This is why I am delighted and proud to be running in this election as a Social Dem-

With a focus on addressing the critical challenges of our times, such as the housing crisis and the need for more inclusive community policies, the party is committed to making a lasting impact in Kerry and beyond.

jects which can contribute to supporting our collective ambitions to move towards a low-carbon economy and to achieve climate action targets. I would encourage community groups to apply,” he said.

Yellow Flag Last week the Killarney Community College held its first ever first yellow flag diversity committee meeting! The Diversity Committee will meet every month and allows students take up leadership roles to guide the Yellow Flag programme in our school. The Yellow Flag Programme provides a practical series of 8 steps that brings issues of interculturalism, equality and diversity into the whole-school programme and allows schools to apply them to the

day to day running of the school. It works with students, staff, management, parents and wider community groups so that issues of diversity and equality are not merely seen as “school subjects” but can be understood and taken outside the school setting into everyone’s personal lives. On successfully completing the following 8 steps and being evaluated externally, the school is awarded its Yellow Flag in recognition of its work in promoting diversity and inclusion

The enduring allure of Valentine's Day Valentine's Day, the annual celebration of love and affection, holds a special place in hearts worldwide.

DID YOU KNOW?

More than 250 million roses are produced globally for Valentine's Day - with red roses making up nearly two-thirds of that number

While the exact origins of this romantic holiday is not exact, its history paints a fascinating selection of cultural traditions and evolving interpretations. The earliest recorded association with Valentine's Day stems from ancient Rome, where the mid-February celebration of Lupercalia held sway. This fertility festival, dedicated to Faunus, the god of agriculture, involved a range of rituals, including sacrificial offerings, goat sacrifices, and the whipping of women with goatskins to induce fertility. Lupercalia was outlawed by Pope Gelasius I in the 5th century, and its place was taken by the Feast of Saint Valentine. The story of Saint Valentine, a third-century Roman priest, is intertwined with the origins of Valentine's Day. According to legend, Valentine defied Emperor Claudius II's decree forbidding marriage for young men, believing that unmarried soldiers made better warriors. Valentine secretly performed marriages, earning him the emperor's wrath and ultimately his martyrdom.

The association between Saint Valentine and romantic love began to develop in the Middle Ages. By the 14th century, Valentine's Day was celebrated with poetic declarations of love and handwritten notes, the forerunners of modern Valentine's Day cards. The tradition of exchanging gifts, particularly flowers, chocolates, and jewellery, also emerged during this period. In the 18th century, the commercialisation of Valentine's Day began in earnest. Hallmark Cards, founded in 1910, played a significant role in popularizing mass-produced greeting cards. The 20th century saw Valentine's Day expand beyond Europe and North America, becoming a global phenomenon. Today, Valentine's Day remains a cherished day for couples worldwide, a time to express love, affection, and gratitude. While the holiday often carries commercial connotations, its essence remains rooted in the enduring power of human connection and the celebration of love in all its forms.

VALENTINE'S DAY LAUGHS What did the toast say to the butter on Valentine's Day? – You're my butter half! –

Who always has a date on Valentine's? – The Calendar –

Why did the Skellington break up with her boyfriend on Valentines Day? – Her heart wasn't in it –

What did the man with the broken leg tell his Valentine? – I have a crutch on you –"

What did the bacon say to the other bacon on Valentines Day? " – Don't go bacon my heart –

While love may manifest in various forms, understanding the unique ways individuals express and receive affection can deepen intimacy and strengthen bonds. Gary Chapman, a renowned relationship expert, introduced the concept of "love languages" in his 1992 book, "The 5 Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate." He proposed that individuals have preferences in how they feel loved, and these preferences can be categorized into five distinct love languages. The key to strengthening relationships lies in understanding and expressing love in a way that resonates with your partner's love language. By identifying their primary love language, you can tailor your expressions of affection to make them feel loved and appreciated. Words of Affirmation: People who speak this love language feel valued and appreciated when they receive verbal expressions of love, such as compliments, encouragement, and words of affirmation. They appreciate being told how much they are loved, cared for, and appreciated. Quality Time: Those who prioritise quality time feel loved when they spend focused, uninterrupted attention with their significant others. It's about being fully present and engaged in shared activities, conversations, and moments of connection. A partner who’s language is quality time may enjoy regular date nights or simply spend

undivided time together, engaging in activities that you both enjoy. Turn off distractions and focus on each other's presence. Acts of Service: Individuals who identify with this love language appreciate acts of service that demonstrate care and thoughtfulness. They feel loved when their partners anticipate their needs and take care of tasks that make their lives easier or more enjoyable. Take the initiative to perform acts of service that make your partners life easier or more enjoyable, such as running errands, cooking meals, or doing household chores. Receiving Gifts: People who resonate with receiving gifts feel loved when their loved ones express their affection through tangible tokens of love. It's not about the monetary value of the gift but the thoughtfulness and care behind it. Give thought to gifts that reflect their interests and preferences, avoiding impersonal or thoughtless choices. Consider something that might hold sentimental value. Physical Touch: Individuals who prioritise physical touch feel loved when they receive physical affection, such as hugs, kisses, cuddling, and hand-holding. They crave physical intimacy as a way to connect and feel loved. Be physically affectionate throughout the day, offering hugs, kisses, cuddling, or holding hands. Engage in meaningful touch that conveys your love and connection.

Valentine's Day A short story by Lily ANN REEN, third year student in Killarney Community College I am a very wealthy man. The prodigy child of a notorious family, the heir to the throne and CEO of my father's business, the usurper of the lower class and all their money. You might think I live like a King. Alas, the answer is no. My lack of poverty inflated my lack of modesty. I was superior to my colleagues and counterparts; I demanded the world and wanted everything yesterday. Satisfaction was a wishful dream and I isolated myself from the world to make it come true. And so, my wishful dream turned into a haunting nightmare. I was in love once. I had classes with her in my youth. She was undoubtedly astonishing. A fragment of perfection. I convinced myself that I could connect that fragment to a greater piece. She did not agree. This brings us to the present day. I stand outside the rose window of a pristine chapel. She is inside. About to

be betrothed to another, in Valentine's day of all days. But I am a stubborn man and I will not accept defeat. My father has connections to the government. So a request in his name for an explosive weapon of sorts was agreeable. Research I claimed. My moment is now "if you have any objections, speak now or forever hold your...", the priest says. With the bomb clung to my back I locate the trigger. I had the world but my world is now. She will forever be my Valentine. If I can't have her, no one can. I once was very wealthy man.

Rich in comedy and with a strong storyline, the show gave value which was acknowledged in no small way by the better-than-ever public support it received. Puss in Boots pulled full houses which culminated in a contribution of €24,000 to Kerry's Parents and Friends. After a most successful week, the group

Despite the challenges of Covid, Eilish Coakley, group treasurer, remarked how wonderful it was to see the input of new people in addition to so many of the regular team both on and off stage. A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Polar bear's 'Ice Bed' wins photo of the year A stunning image of a young polar bear sleeping on a small, drifting iceberg has won the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year People's Choice Award.

Captured by British photographer Nima Sarikhani, the photo depicts a lone polar bear curled up on a precariously small iceberg, its white fur blending with the icy landscape.

A record number of 75,000 people cast their votes this year’s competition to name Nima as this year's winner. Organisers praised the "breathtaking and poignant" image, saying it "allows us to see the beauty and fragility of our planet" and acts as "a stark reminder of the integral bond between an animal and its habitat... a visual representation of the detrimental impacts of climate warming and habitat loss".

Fisticuffs erupt in Maldives parliament In a scene more befitting a wrestling ring than a legislative body, punches flew, hair was pulled, and toy trumpets blared during a Maldives Parliament Session this week, making a mockery of the nation's democratic image. The clash stemmed from a vote on approving four new cabinet ministers, all members of the newly-elected president's party. The opposition vehemently opposed the nominations, accusing the president of stacking the cabinet with his allies. Tensions escalated throughout the debate, culminating in a physical altercation as the vote neared. Videos circulating online capture the shocking scenes. Members grapple on the floor, throwing punches and kicks. One MP is seen pulling another's hair, while others blow toy trumpets in an act of anger and frustration. Security personnel struggle to intervene, eventually separating the brawling lawmakers.

Measles outbreak a public health concern There is widespread concern across Ireland and other EU countries that are facing a potential resurgence of measles. Driven by low vaccination rates and increased travel, medical experts are concerned that the highly contagious disease could see a significant outbreak in 2024. The primary culprit behind this impending outbreak is the decline in MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine uptake. According to the World Health

Organization (WHO), measles cases in Europe soared by 4,400% in 2023 compared to 2022. This alarming rise coincides with a drop in vaccination rates, attributed to vaccine hesitancy and misinformation. Ireland, in particular, faces a worrying scenario, with MMR vaccination rates falling below the critical 95% threshold and only four cases reported in 2023. The HSE has confirmed the death of an adult male from measles, the first case in Ireland this year. The man contracted

the disease following a trip to the UK, and the HSE’s Health Protection Surveillance Centre said the person died in a hospital in the Dublin and Midlands Health Region. It said public health teams, along with the HSE Measles National Incident Management Team (IMT), are taking all necessary public health actions in relation to the case while public health campaigns are expected to be launched focusing on educating the public about the importance of vaccination.

Money Mule Awareness Campaign launched by Gardaí and Credit Unions An Garda Síochána has this week launched a fraud awareness campaign in partnership with 13 Credit Unions in Kerry and West-Limerick to highlight the dangers of acting as a money mule. Gardaí in the Kerry Garda Division continue to target money laundering through the bank accounts of those residing in the county under Operation Mullet.

John Bruton: A life dedicated to public service and peace John Bruton, the former Taoiseach of Ireland, passed away on Tuesday, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated public service and a pivotal role in Irish history. Bruton's political career spanned five decades, starting with his election to the Dáil Éireann in 1969 at the young age of 22. He rose through the ranks of Fine Gael, holding numerous ministerial positions before becoming Taoiseach in 1994. His leadership coincided with a period of significant economic growth for Ireland. Bruton also played a crucial role in the Northern Ireland peace process. He championed dialogue and cooperation, working closely with British Prime Minister John Major to lay the groundwork for the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. This landmark agreement brought an end to decades of conflict and remains a cornerstone of peace in Northern Ireland. Beyond his political achievements, Bruton was known for his intellect, integrity,

and commitment to European integration. He served as Ireland's first EU Ambassador to the United States after leaving office, strengthening transatlantic relations. His dedication to public service continued until his later years, through his work with the Institute of International and European Affairs and his advocacy for various causes. John Bruton's passing is a loss not just for Ireland, but for the international community. He leaves behind a legacy of peace-making, economic progress, and a deep commitment to public service. Current Fine Gael leader and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar commented this week, “While his public persona was often intellectual and serious – as a person, he was always good company, funny, witty, gregarious, sociable, self-deprecating with a distinctive and infectious laugh.” He added: “John believed in democracy, and believed passionately that politics was a noble pursuit that could change lives for the better.”

This operation has already led to 32 prosecutions of those whose bank accounts were illegally used to launder up to €1.3 million in proceeds acquired through online fraud. Money mules are typically recruited via social media, through friends and acquaintances or while out socialising by what are known as mule herders. On some occasions it can also involve young people with drug debts who pay off such debts by allowing their accounts to be used. The practice is co-ordinated and well-organised by a large criminal group. In the Tralee area, a large number of those recruited to act as money mules were aged between 16-20 years of age. In efforts to highlight the dangers and serious legal implications of acting as a money mule, An Garda Síochána and per-

sonnel from Credit Unions across Kerry and West-Limerick will present to all local secondary schools and colleges. The expertly created presentation includes the first-hand personal experiences of two young people who have been prosecuted for the offence. A series of webinars will be held to help inform parents and warn them of the dangers of their child being targeted to act as a money mule, while a joint social media campaign is aimed at increasing awareness among young people themselves and prevent them from becoming involved. Speaking at the launch, Kerry Crime Prevention Officer, Sergeant Michael Quirke said: "We are appealing to the public, particularly younger people, to not let anyone else use their bank account for the transfer of ill-gotten gains. "It may be sold to you as an easy, straightforward task of simply providing your bank account details in exchange for a quick buck of €100 or €200, but you can’t put a price on a criminal conviction that prohibits you from so much.” Ms. Siobhan Donnelly, Credit Union, added: "We are very happy to join with An Garda Síochána in their efforts to tackle money laundering and money muling."

Kerry's Ruby Knox shortlisted for Outsider Magazine Award Longboard surfer Ruby Knox (25) has been shortlisted for the Outsider “Audience Choice Award” category after an impressive 2023. Ruby hails from The Maharees on the Dingle peninsula in County Kerry and had plenty to celebrate last year making the Irish surf team for the first time

and placing fifth in the European Surfing Federation Championships in Portugal. In the same category is Lianne van Dijk, ultra-runner who was born in the Netherlands but is now based in Kerry. Lianne took the ultra-running community by storm this year – winning both the Beara Way Ultra and the Wicklow Way race.

WHAT'S

THE BUZZ? Cillian Murphy’s son gets big debut break

Disney’s $1.5 billion investment in Fortnite Maker ‘Epic Games’ The entertainment giant, Disney, has made its biggest foray into the gaming world yet, announcing a $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games, the developer behind the hugely popular battle royale title Fortnite. This strategic move signals Disney's growing ambition to become a major player in the game The partnership aims to create an interconnected "games and entertainment universe" featuring Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar characters. This ambitious project promises to blur the lines between traditional gaming and immersive entertainment, potentially

creating a unique and engaging experience for fans of all ages. While the specific details of the planned games and experiences remain under wraps, the investment extends beyond just developing Fortnite content. Disney gains a minority stake in Epic, granting access to the company's cutting-edge Unreal Engine technology, which powers not only Fortnite but also many other successful games and even Hollywood films. This partnership marks a significant shift for Disney. Traditionally known for its theme parks, movies, and animation, the company is now actively embracing the interactive world of gaming.

The Irish acting scene has an abundance of exciting young talent stepping onto the scene, and the latest buzz surrounds Aran Murphy, the teenage son of renowned Cork actor Cillian Murphy. Aran has landed his feature film debut in none other than Klara and the Sun, a highly anticipated sci-fi adaptation directed by the acclaimed Taika Waititi. This marks a significant moment for Aran, not just for his burgeoning career, but also for the spotlight it brings to the next generation of Hollywood hopefuls. While details about his specific role are under wraps, the film itself boasts an impressive cast,

including Jenna Ortega fresh off her success in the Netflix series Wednesday, and the Oscar-nominated Amy Adams. Klara and the Sun is based on the acclaimed novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, and tells the story of an Artificial Friend named Klara who befriends a sickly teenager. The film promises to be a visually stunning and emotionally resonant exploration of humanity, artificial intelligence, and the power of connection. While Aran's role remains shrouded in secrecy, his association with such a high-profile project alongside established stars like Ortega and Adams is sure to generate significant excitement.

Sunday Super Bowl spectacle The stage is set for Super Bowl LVIII, the grand culmination of the NFL season, where the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs will battle it out for gridiron glory on February 11th, 2024. This matchup promises to be an epic clash, with storylines galore and high stakes on both sides. After a dominant regular season, the 49ers faced adversity with injuries to key players, including their starting quarterback. However, they persevered, relying on a stout defence and

a revitalised rushing attack led by the young and dynamic Brock Purdy. The Chiefs, led by the ever-elusive Patrick Mahomes, are seeking their third Super Bowl win in four years. Their potent offense, featuring Mahomes' pinpoint accuracy and an array of explosive playmakers, remains a force to be reckoned with. The allure of the Super Bowl goes well beyond the two teams battling it out for glory. The much anticipated halftime show is a major spectacle and this year fans will see R&B superstar Usher take centre stage.

KDMC’s Cronin and Galvin win Galway International Rally Killarney and District Motor Club members Keith Cronin and Mikie Galvin won the Corrib Oil Galway International Rally, in the Lyons Motor Group/Shane Casey Electrical Services/M O’Brien Group Ford Fiesta Rally 2, by 38.1 seconds from Callum Devine and Noel O'Sullivan, also a KDMC member in a Volkswagen Polo R5. The event marked former title holder Cronin's return to the Irish Tarmac Rally series, having spent recent years taking part in rounds of the British Championship, and it was also his first event in the latest version of the Fiesta Rally 2. Cronin, who previously won in Galway in 2013, set the fastest time on the opening stage on Saturday, being initially challenged by Sam Moffett in a Hyundai. Josh Moffett, on his first outing in a Citroen C3 Rally 2, then drew level with Cronin at the top of the leaderboard on stage two, but thereafter the Cork driver put in a couple of remarkable times, faster by eight and six seconds on two of the afternoon stages to establish a useful buffer to the rest of the field. Devine took up the chase with an aggressive tyre choice on Saturday afternoon, setting a couple of fastest times to leave the overnight gap at fifteen seconds.

Sunday morning saw Cronin make full use of his talents in the very wet conditions to pull away from the opposition, and he and Galvin had a trouble free run to victory. "I haven't entered a rally in Ireland at this level in a good few years, I haven't been doing that much rallying in general. I definitely didn’t expect to arrive here and

win. I was hoping to get a podium at best, but to get the win, it's just fantastic", said a delighted Cronin at the end of the final stage. "The car just clicked straight away, we got the tyre choice right early, the Pirellis worked well, we used the same type of tyre all weekend. It worked in all the mix of conditions, so we're very happy.

It's been a great weekend from the very get go really. It all came together very late, the car didn't get here until Thursday, so it was all a bit last minute, but we got a run in the car Thursday, it felt good straight away. On Saturday morning we were fastest on the first stage and we just kept it going from there. The pace was hot, we were pushing on, especially on Saturday. We were leading overnight, then pushed for the stages first thing this morning and just managed it from there. In any sport you have to get a good feeling in what you are doing, especially in rallying, and it felt easy enough today from the driving, but even if you're not going quicker you're still pushing really hard. This rally worked for us but another time one of the other guys will be leading from start to finish, but this one worked for us.” Aghadoe’s Conor Murphy and his Rathmore co-driver Sean Collins came out second in the keenly fought National Rally. The Ford Escort crew had to come from behind, they were third overnight and went much better than leader Frank Kelly over the wet and slippery roads. Just five seconds separated the top three National crews as they entered the final 30km loop of two stages. However a late mechanical issue ended Murphy's challenge and he finished second to Kelly. The Kerry man's rally was all but over only for Kelly, sportingly, towing him back to service.

Teresa RANDLES is a former Head of Human Resources and now works as a Career Coach and Career Planning Strategist.

Building a professional network with LinkedIn For this next column, I am going to talk about LinkedIn profiles and building and developing a professional network of contacts.

PROPERTY REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE • Painting & decorating Interior & exterior (Fencing, Walls) • Spray Painting • Fixing of doors and windows • Power washing (Driveways, Decking Patios, Paths, Gutters & Fascias) • Carpentry (Timber floors, Paneling, Skirting Boards) • Garage Clearouts • Gardening & • General maintenance

So what is LinkedIn and why should you be on it? LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network on the internet. It has 1 billion members in over 200 countries and in August 2023 there were 2,890,000 users in Ireland. Here are some reasons I think you should have a LinkedIn profile • It will demonstrate your skills, expertise and USP. • It will help recruiters find you. • You can research companies and their senior management before interview. • You can develop a network by connecting with other professionals. • You can raise your profile by posting and commenting on current and industry led topics. So to begin building your profile - the first thing you need is a good photograph - the photograph is the first thing people look at when they click on your profile. It should be professional and you should be the only person visible. Check that you look friendly and approachable! Think about your headline, it should be more than just your job title. This column is not long enough to take you

through every aspect of building your profile - but I do want to briefly mention 'posting' and 'commenting', both of which will raise your profile. You can post on LinkedIn say for example a recent career move, promotion or a development in your particular field. You can also comment on posts by other individuals - again if they post on some research they have been involved in. NB if you unemployed and actively looking for work, I recommend you activate the 'Open to Work' button. It will make it easier for recruiters and potential employers find you. So, you can begin developing your network by connecting with colleagues, referrers of business, others in your industry etc. I always recommend sending a message with your connection request, you are more likely to get a positive response. You can also 'follow' people who are not connections but maybe experts in their chosen field. I tend to follow thought leaders in people development and leadership - occasionally I will send a connection request to them. I could write a lot more on LinkedIn and developing your network of contacts and if you have any questions, please get in touch teresa@meetyourcareercoach.com or 085 169 3541.

High-flying St Paul’s retain conference title Utility Trust St Paul’s captured their second consecutive National League Division 1 Southern Conference title with three games to spare following a 60-71 victory away to the Limerick Celtics on Saturday. The Killarney side now have a guaranteed home semi-final against the runners-up from the Northern Conference when the post-season rolls around on March 9/10. They will be seeking to make amends for last year’s playoffs when they just came up short at the semi-final stage. Last weekend’s opponents were the only team who stood a mathematical chance of catching Paul’s at the top of the table but the visitors ended all doubt by securing a convincing 11-point win. Sofia Paska, a former Limerick player, was Paul’s top scorer with 26 points but coach James Fleming was particularly pleased with her rebounding in the second half. “We spoke about it at half-time and we came out much better in the sec-

ond half. Sofia Paska and Lorraine Scanlon cleaned up under the boards and Rheanne O'Shea gave us a superb performance. Denise Dunlea controlled the game for us and Meabh Barry always contributes too.” Fleming was also pleased with the defensive efforts of Leah McMahon, Niamh Ní Chonchúir and Khiarica Rasheed. Next up for Fleming and his squad are two home games at Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. Moy Tolka Rovers are the opposition this Saturday (7.30pm) with the Limerick Sport Huskies coming to town seven days later. Their final fixture of the regular season is away to the Marble City Hawks on February 24. Elsewhere, Scotts Lakers suffered a ten-point defeat against the Limerick Celtics. They will hope to get back to winning ways at home to the Waterford Vikings on Saturday. Tip-off at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre is at 4pm.

| By Adam Moynihan Legendary Kerry footballer and current U20 manager Tomás Ó Sé has hailed rookie forward Cillian Burke for his “outstanding” performance in last weekend’s National League Division 1 match against Monaghan.

Burke, who is making the step-up to senior after lining out for Ó Sé’s U20s in 2023, scored a first-half goal that helped the Kingdom secure an important 3-15 win to 1-12 in Clones. Speaking to this journalist on The Kerry Football Podcast, five-time All-Ireland winner Ó Sé said he is delighted to see the Milltown-Castlemaine forward come in and make an immediate impact. “I thought he was outstanding. It was always going to be a tough match against Derry in Round 1. You’re playing at home, you’re making your debut, and I think Derry coming to town wanted to go for that win. Mickey Harte always, always wants to put up a huge display against Kerry. “So, for Cillian, maybe the first game didn’t go as well. But for him to go up to Monaghan – and Monaghan is no easy place to go – and to put in the performance he did… He’s got the raw materials. We’ve seen it in the County Championship. He has raw strength,

he has unbelievable pace, he’ll take you on every time he can. And then he’ll track back and tackle. He has that fitness. “He’s a huge athlete and I think he’ll settle in well. I think the management are doing it properly with him. When you have that comfort of having the likes of Seánie O’Shea [around], there isn’t a lot of pressure on him. He doesn’t have to be the main man, which is vital. The Monaghan game will have brought him on a tonne. “Now, the year is long, and championship is completely different to league, but it’s a brilliant start for him. I’m delighted for him.” The Ventry native believes that Burke’s rapid rise from the U20s to the seniors will have a positive effect on his current crop of players as they prepare for the 2024 championship, which gets underway in March. As for Kerry’s prospects for the rest of the season, Ó Sé feels that Jack O’Connor’s men are in with a real chance of

going all the way. “I think Kerry will always be in the mix. Especially at the moment. If you look back at last year’s All-Ireland final, they went three points up twice in that second half. I think they won’t be far off it again. “I think Jack is shrewd enough to realise that if he can tighten up that defence and make sure they’re watertight, he has the lads up the other end of the pitch who will hurt opposition.” The 2004 Footballer of the Year discussed a wide range of topics during his appearance on The Kerry Football Podcast, including his all-conquering teammates, his famous footballing family, his love for the Irish language, and his struggles when it came to coping with defeat. You can listen to the weekly show dedicated to all things Kerry football on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts.

Kerry enjoy big win in Clones | By Eamonn Fitzgerald

Clones is your typical Ulster provincial ground and it has been the graveyard for many teams in their bids to win the Ulster football final. It was a daunting task for Kerry to make that long trip there on Sunday last for Round 2 of the National League. Round 1 was a disappointing result for Kerry against Derry as the Ulster champs won the game with an injury-time free. Much was expected by Kerry fans who were looking for an energised Ker-

ry display after the disappointment of losing the All-Ireland to Dublin last July. That was a game they should have won. At home to Derry should have been a win too but spurned goal chances cost Kerry dearly. Monaghan had defeated Dublin at Croke Park in their opening game and were expected to defeat Kerry at home in Clones. After all, they owed Kerry an upset after losing to them over the past few years at home and away. However, Kerry not only collected both points but gave a tremendous display. No great problem about the defence as Kerry use this league to win enough games, although maybe not enough to win the league title. A team has to be blooded and tempered to deliver Sam Maguire back to the Kingdom.

There was much to savour about this win. Midfield is doing better, especially with the return of Joe O’Connor. The Stacks man has been very unlucky with a longterm injury which kept him out of the reckoning for the 2023 season. He has done well in the McGrath Cup games and had his best game to date at Clones. Diarmuid O ’Connor also upped his game. I had high hopes for him graduating to senior level after performing well at underage. He hasn’t developed as well as I expected, but he is rangy and well ableto stride forward to score. His goal on Sunday had an element of good fortune about it, but he was following through and that is how scores come. Cillian Burke was the player at Kerry club level I had picked out over the past season to wear the Kerry geansaí when he

9.02.2024 led Milltown/Castlemaine to a Kerry IFC victory over Fossa in the most entertaining game of 2023. He did not set Austin Stack Park alight against Derry but he upped his game in Monaghan. He is a big, strong, young man who can field well, get into good scoring positions and be direct. Put all that together and you will have another natural scorer along with the Clifford brothers and Seánie O’Shea. He’s not there yet, but the raw material is there and hopefully Jack will allow him to do what he does best and what Kerry need most. There are plenty of forwards who are assisting. Kerry needs scorers. I can also see Burke operating as a third midfielder and that is also needed at strategic times in the game. Of course, the Clifford brothers had a big impact when they came on. They will be in from the start against Mayo under lights in Tralee tomorrow week. That will be a full house. Mayo are the perennial bridesmaids in championship football but they are always very good in the league and will be buoyed up by their last-gasp win at home to the Dubs. They deserved it. Kerry v Mayo is the big treat for Kerry supporters and then in Round 4 the team are away to Dublin, and then at home to Tyrone at the Fitzgerald Stadium.

Three out of three and all against top teams. Mná na Ríochta continued on their winning ways by hammering Cork by 13 points in Tralee. They got off to a great start versus Dublin at Parnell Park and were under the cosh in Round 2 at Fitzgerald Stadium as Waterford looked poised for victory until the joint managers Declan and Darragh sprung Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh into action for the last quarter. Footballer of the Year in 2023, she sunk Waterford with devastating scores. It was good to have Cork, another strong team, at home in Tralee on Bank Holiday Monday and once again Kerry reshuffled their team. A special word for goalkeeper Mary Ellen Bolger. Her mother passed away on Saturday but she still decided to play and performed brilliantly, keeping a

clean sheet. Cork were confined to just seven points while Kerry scored 2-14 at their ease. They will face other big teams such as Meath and Armagh with confidence. They are also unbeaten so far. Laoch ns hImeathha was Amy Harrington, a splendid player from Inbhear Scéine Gaels, Kenmare. Anyone interested in athletics will remember the exploits of her mother Maura Harrington, an outstanding athlete, especially in cross country. Hannah O’Donoghue was also in sparkling form. The Beaufort player shot 1-3. Other proven players such as Danielle O’Leary (Rathmore 1-2 and Ní Mhuircheatraigh 0-2 came on to top up the scores. However, Kerry must be careful as Cork were missing some key players and Dublin will also move up the gears in defence of their All-Ireland crown.

Baptism of fire for new Kerry hurlers | By Eamonn Fitzgerald The Kerry hurlers had their first outing in this year’s league against Carlow in Tralee where they were well beaten 3-22 to 0-19. It was a baptism of fire for Kerry as Stephen Molumphy fielded some players who are new to this level of competition. Carlow are tough opposition. Remember they are the reigning champions of the Joe McDonagh Cup. With no tried and trusted Kerry scorers such as Shane Conway, and facing a tough breeze, it was the opposition who called the tune. They hit Kerry with an early goal and were 1-6 clear, using the wind that was driving into the Killarney End goal. The ever-reliable Fionán Mackessy also a fine football player - got Kerry

going. Still, it was 1-14 to a mere 0-7 for Kerry at half-time. One expected Kerry to pare down that 10-point deficit aided by the strong breeze in the second half. They did start well but wind or no wind Carlow dominated and extended the margin 2-16 to 0-9. Chris Nolan upped the Kerry scoring but there was no let up by Carlow. Mackessy, Nolan, Diggin, and Mulcahy did best. Glenflesk’s Luke Crowley was unable to play due to a groin injury, so it remains to be seen if he is fit for the long trip to Ballycran (Down) for Round 2 this weekend. Molumphy will be hoping to blood new players, get sharpshooter Shane Conway back and make one almighty effort to win the cherished Joe McDonagh Cup which has evaded them so agonisingly in the past.

Kerry FC advance to Munster semi-final A single goal was enough to send Kerry FC through to the semi-final of the Munster Senior Cup as they saw off Cobh Ramblers at Mounthawk Park on Monday. The Cork side were the reigning cham-

pions but that did not faze Kerry. 19-year-old Victor Udeze only arrived in Tralee from Athlone Town earlier in the week and he had a dream start scoring the only goal of the game. Several players were involved in the Kerry build-up, but crucially Daniel Okwute

crossed from the right wing and Udeze outwitted Frahill, the Cobh Ramblers centre half. The result is a great boost for Kerry as they prepare for their second season in the LOI First Division. The Kerry team was comprised of: Antonio Tuta; Kevin

Williams, Samuel Aladesanusi, Andy Spain, Jack Kavanagh; Steven Healy, Ronan Teahan; Daniel Okwute, Sean McGrath, Nathan Gleeson; and Victor Udeze. Elsewhere, Terry Sparling was the toast of Killarney Celtic when his late goal was enough beat Castleview in their away quarter-final in the Munster Junior Cup.

Killarney girls are champions of Munster Last Saturday the Killarney U18.5 girls travelled to Old Crescent RFC in Limerick and defeated last year’s winners Ennis 8-6 to be crowned Munster League champions. The U18.5 match was the grand finale after the U14 and U16 league finals and so it was played in front of a big crowd on a terrific day for girls’ rugby in the province. The clash of Ennis and Killarney was always going to be battle and that’s exactly how it transpired. Ennis started the game and kicked deep and Killarney didn’t deal with it, which led to a scrum in a very favourable position on the 22. After a series of good carries by the Ennis forwards, they scored a try in the corner which wasn’t converted. The Clare side led 5-0 in inside the first minute; the perfect start for the reigning champions. What was very notable that Killarney took this early setback in their stride and straight away they were on the attack, but credit to Ennis their defence held firm after some good carries by the Killarney forwards Lily Morris, Ava O’Malley and Clodagh Foley. On 18 minutes Killarney had a scrum just

inside their own half and their number eight made a super run and linked up with scrum half Bronagh Dorrian, who passed to Cara Reilly. The referee then blew for an Ennis offside infringement and a penalty to Killarney. Knowing it was going to be a tight game and conscious of getting the Kerry girls

points on the scoreboard, co-captain Fia Whelan consulted with her fellow co-captain Morris and together they elected to take the penalty kick. Whelan slotted over the penalty to make it Ennis 5-3 Killarney. Killarney’s back three of Marina Eagar, Holly O’Sullivan and Mary-Ellen Mc

9.02.2024 Donald dealt very well with Ennis’ kicks and they counterattacked on most occasions. Then, with 24 minutes on the clock, O’Malley picked from the base of a scrum on the right and out stripped their defence to make a brilliant run. She found the onrushing second row Joanne O’Keefe who made further ground. Her teammates finished a fine move off in style, going through the hands of Dorrian, Whelan, Eagar, Ali O’Donoghue and eventually Mary Ellen McDonald to finish off a super team try in the corner. It proved to be the match-winning score. The Kerry girls continued to work hard in the second half and they finished the game in the ascendancy. In the end, they failed to extend their lead but it mattered little as they held on for a historic win. “This win means an awful lot to us,” Killarney coach Diarmuid O’Malley said. “We can now bring this trophy back home and hopefully inspire the next generation of young Kerry players.”

SPORT NOTES

Killarney Athletic U17 CUP: Mastergeeha 0-6 Killarney Athletic. Luke Doolan, Brian O’Shea, Mark O’Carroll, Evan Doona, Craig Leggate. A great all-round team performance today from the lads in the cup up in Mastergeeha. We took the lead after 10 minutes with a back post header from Luke Doolan, and Brian O’Shea added a second from a direct free kick 10 minutes before half time to leave us 2-0 ahead at the break. Luke added his second early after the restart when he got onto a through ball and slipped it past the goalie. Mark O’Carroll then dispatched a penalty to put us 4 ahead. Evan Doona got on the end of a Bryan O’Connor cross to finish well and Craig Leggate scored with a great finish from a corner. 6 goals, a clean sheet and into the quarter finals of the Cup - job done. Thanks to Mastergeeha for a very sporting game. U14: Athletic 3 Castleisland 1. Our young blues had a home fixture v Castleisland. In a tight opening 20 mins Athletic took control and hit Castleisland for 3 quick goals. A sweeping move from right side resulting in a lovely finish from Max Moynihan. Then a lovely through ball from Jamie Fleming put Eric Corcoran through and he made no mistake to make it two. And Eric Corcoran got his second and Athletics 3rd when he cut back onto his right and finished into the corner. Second half Athletic played some nice football to stay in control of the tie. Castleisland stuck kept going and got a goal to make it 3-1. Good outing for Athletic with some lovely football player throughout the game. U12 DIVISION 2 TEAM CUP: Killorglin AFC 3 Athletic 1 (AET). The lads travelled to Killorglin for a cup game and following a brave effort unfortunately came out on the wrong side of a very tight contest. Despite the soggy conditions under foot some great football was played including a nice finish from Luke O’Sullivan but in extra time Killorglin finished the stronger and went home with the win. Well done to the lads on a great effort. Good luck to Killorglin in the next round. U13 CUP: Our Girls marched into the Cup Semi Final after a Cracking game V's St Brendan’s Park this morning. Scorers For the Blues Ella Crowley, Lillian Slattery. U15 GIRLS PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 3 MEK 3. Our Girls came away from Fossa today with a well-earned point where they gave a fantastic team performance in bad conditions. Scorers for the Blues Emily O’Neill and Kelsey Cummins with a brace. U12 BOYS SHIELD: Ballyheigue A 1 Killarney Athletic B 5. The U12 boys made the trip to Ardfert Saturday afternoon to face Ballyheigue. We made a strong start and took our chances well early on, going in at half time 3 nil up. Ballyheigue bounced back well in the second scoring a deserved goal after some sustained pressure. Athletic responded well grabbing

two more goals to secure their place in the next round. Some great goals scored and all-round good effort.

MEK Galaxy U13 GIRLS SHIELD: MEK Galaxy 0 Tralee Dynamos 4. Our girls worked really hard on a sticky pitch. Every player contributed to a solid team performance. Tralee Dynamo's were always dangerous, taking a 1 nil lead into halftime. We were still in the game. However, the Tralee side took more control of the game and increased their lead. We pushed hard to get back into the game, but it wasn’t to be. Well done and the best of luck to Dynamo's in the next round. POTM Lexi Griffin & Abbie O'Mahony. U15 GIRLS PREMIER: MEK Galaxy 3 Killarney Athletic 3. What a game!!! Both teams were excellent, working hard in messy conditions. MEK took the lead in the first couple of minutes with a strike from Fleur O'Neill. Athletic struck back to make it 1 all. A bit of fortune was gifted to the home side with an OG. Then Ava Harty made it 3-1 to stretch our advantage. But it was a game that could turn. Athletics struck, 3-2. The game ebbed and flowed, every couple of minutes, with

both teams taking control. But Athletic got the equaliser. Game on!!! In truth, both teams could have won in the last quarter of the game. But it would have been harsh if either team were on the losing team. A fair result for two teams that’s left everything on the pitch. Well done to all the players on both teams. Scorers: Ava Harty, Fleur O'Neill and OG. POTM Abbie Fleming. U12 BOYS: Plate MEK Galaxy B 4-3 LB Rovers B. A classic cup tie in the mud at Lackabane. 3-1 up at half time and well in control. LB fought back to level 3-3 with 2 minutes to go but the boys kept going and grabbed a top bins winner deep into injury time. U14 BOYS: Division 1 MEK Galaxy 9-2 Camp Juniors. A great performance by our Under 14 boys who dominated against Camp. MOTM Cade Jameson with a goal worthy of a match of the day special! Scorers: Cade Jameson 6, Mickey Cooper, Daragh Burke and Shane O’Neill

Kerry FC SIGNING: Kerry Football Club is delighted to announce the arrival of Valerii Dolia from Athlone Town for the 2024 SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division campaign. The 25-year-old Ukrainian makes the switch from the midlands to the Southwest for the upcoming season having originally signed for the league's oldest club back in July 2022. Dolia went on to be a prolific forward player for Athlone Town and made 46 appearances across the season and a half he has spent in the league. As a winger, Dolia netted some 11 goals and got 4 assists for the Midlander’s. Previous to his spell in Athlone, Dolia played in his home country of Ukraine in the ‘Druga Liga’, the country's second tier, most recently with SK Tavriya. Dolia faced Kerry on 4 occasions last season and scored 3 goals against the Kingdom in the sides 2 wins against the newcomers. He was on the scoresheet but on the losing side in Kerry’s sole victory in the campaign last May. Dolia is sure to bolster the kingdom's attacking flair in 2024, adding to the likes of Ryan Kelliher, Kennedy Amechi and Daniel Okwute who were all key players in the clubs first season in the League of Ireland. Speaking to kerryfc. com following his arrival in the kingdom, Valerii Dolia said “I am very happy to join Kerry Football Club. This is a great team with very good staff. I hope I will be able to help the team from the very start and I'll make every effort to win. I’m very excited to meet my teammates and get to work before the start of the season”. Also speaking to kerryfc.com after Valerii’s signing, First Team Head Coach Conor McCarthy said “We’re delighted to sign Valerii for the 2024 campaign. Valerii had a brilliant season last season with Athlone and his numbers were excellent so we’re really excited to have him on board. I’m sure it’s one the fans will really like and hopefully he can get them on the edge of their seat in Mounthawk Park very soon.

Killarney Legion GAA EAST KERRY SUPERLEAGUE: Our Senior Men opened up their East Kerry Super League campaign with a comfortable win over Fossa in Direen. Leading by 1-6 to 0-5 at half time courtesy of a Sam Benson goal, they pushed further clear in the second half thanks to another Benson goal and further strikes from Eoghan O’Sullivan and Peter Mc Carthy. Final Score Killarney Legion 4-11 Fossa 0-8. Team Colm O’Cuiv, Podge O'Connor, Danny Sheahan, Peter O’Sullivan, Denis Sheahan, Darragh Fleming, Jonathan Lyne, Jamie Alade, Darragh Lyne, Cian Sheahan, William Shine, Finbarr Murphy, Ryan O’Grady, Shaun Keane, Sam Benson. Subs Brian Kelly, Eoghan O’Sullivan, Peter McCarthy, Callum O’Donoghue, Darragh O’Doherty, Rob Leen. EAST KERRY ALL STARS: The East Kerry Gala All Star Awards were held in the Gleneagle Hotel last Friday night. Despite our narrow defeat to Dr Crokes in the O'Donoghue Cup final we still had eight nominees up for recognition. Five of the eight were ultimately successful with Brian Kelly, Peter O’Sullivan, Cian Gammell, Darragh Lyne and Finbarr Murphy all collecting gongs. Brian Kelly kept four clean sheets in the O'Donoghue Cup and the All-Star winning goalkeeper was soundness personified behind his defence. His kick outs were pinpoint and his safety under the high ball is unparalleled. Peter O’Sullivan’s versatility in either the full back or half back line kept a number of the county's top forwards under wraps. With lightning speed he also was a springboard for many counter attacks, his pace making him a serious threat and a worthy recipient of an East Kerry All Star. Cian Gammell is the holder of two All-Ireland minor medals and a Hogan Cup in 2016 with St Brendan’s College. He has been a mainstay of Kerry intercounty panels since. If he continues to perform to the level, he did in the O’Donoghue Cup campaign a recall to the County colours could be in the offing. Darragh Lyne was an All-Ireland winner in 2018, he has also represented Kerry at U20 level. His performance against Kilcummin in the semi-final in atrocious conditions was outstanding and he is flagged as being one to watch in 2024. Finbarr Murphy was a consistent scorer all year, the seven-point contribution against Fossa was his best performance of the year. His accuracy off either foot from both play and placed balls was instrumental in his team's run to the O’Donoghue Cup. Coming from a family steeped in Gaelic Football, the Murphys from Mill Road, Finbarr is a worthy recipient. Also nominated were Darragh O’Doherty, Ryan O'Grady and Jamie Alade and no doubt all three will be looking to push on this year also. SCOR: Well done to the Killarney Legion Set Dancers on becoming Scór na nÓg County Champions on Friday night last. Zoe Counihan, Brian Brosnan, Grace Cox,

However, they stuck to the task with Dan O'Connell defending very well, Cian O'Shea putting in a shift in midfield, Emmett O'Shea, Killian and Harry Buckley kept the scoreboard ticking but Legion proved too strong and accurate and ran out easy winners on a score of 4-11 to 0-07. Killarney Rugby U18.5 GIRLS: A huge congratulations to our U18.5 girls who won the U18.5 Munster league at Old Crescent RFC in Limerick last Saturday. The game finished 8 points to 5 in favour of Killarney with a try

by Mary Ellen McDonald and a penalty from the boot of co-captain Fia Whelan, this was another historic day for the club. The girls were given a wonderful send off from our Minis at Aghadoe who cheered the bus as they left. Played in front of a huge traveling support, the game was a tough battle between very equal sides, and it was fantastic to see our girls lift the trophy. Well done to all the girls led by co captains Fia Whelan and Lily Morris, coaches Diarmuid O'Malley and Josh Whelan and team manager Elaine O'Donoghue. RESULTS: U14 Boys: Killarney 33-3 Thurles. Kerry Badminton Club DIVISION 2 & 4 SINGLES: The Kerry division 2 & 4 singles county championships took place on Friday last the 2nd of February in the Tralee Sports and Leisure Complex in association with CPC.ie. Some brilliant badminton was played by all with some very close games. There were winners from Killarney, Listowel and Moyvane, it was great to see players from all corners of the county playing and getting involved. The results on the night were as follows: Division 4 Men - Winner: Antonii Paiuk (Killarney). Runner-Up: Jomy Joy (Tralee). Division 4 Ladies - Winner: Caroline Lemass (Killarney). Runner-Up: Olena Paiuk (Killarney). Division 2 Men Winner: Mikey Belov Flanagan (Listowel). Runner-Up: Oscar McElligott (Listowel). Division 2 Ladies - Winner: Helen Browne (Moyvane). Runner-Up: Michelle Beazley (Kingdom). INTERCOUNTY GRADE D, F & H: Three teams from Kerry had an early rise Sunday morning as they travelled to Waterford to take part in their respective Munster Intercounty graded competitions. The Kerry grade F and H teams played in the new SETU arena while the Ds travelled to Cappoquin for their day out. The Kerry Grade D team emerged victorious after defeating Tipperary 9-0 and then coming up against a very strong

Waterford team where it came down to the very last game which was 3rd mixed. Kelvin McNally and Helen Browne played a brilliant game which went all the way to 3 sets after the Kerry pair won the second 26-24 and the 3rd 21-13. The team will now go forward and represent Kerry and Munster in the All-Ireland later in the season. The grade F team had a tough group in which they played Cork and Clare. They were beaten by a strong Cork team in the first game 7 matches to 2 but were in a much tighter affair against Clare where Clare just scraped it 5 games to 4. There were some close games played here with 2 of the 5 games Kerry lost going to 3 sets in very close games. But on the day, it was Clare and Cork that emerged from the group. The Grade H team also played in the new SETU arena where they had both Cork and Limerick. In the first game they 2 were beaten by a string well playing Cork team by 7 games to 2. In the second game, Kerry played really well and beat Limerick 5 games to 4. This them put them in the mix to go through but unfortunately on counting the games back Kerry only won 7 games between the 2 matches whereas Cork and Limerick had 10 each and so they went through. JUVENILE DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Kerry Juvenile Championships continued today in Killarney with the girls' and boys' doubles. While players from Annascaul, Moyvane, Castleisland, and Tralee contested finals, it was a sea of green from Listowel that once again swept all before them. They contested all eight finals and won all eight, a truly phenomenal achievement. Many thanks again to Suzanne and Mary for taking the entries and making the draws; club helpers and Tom Bradley for the photos.
