Killarney Valley Athletic Club are going racing on the streets Killarney Valley Athletic Club has announced the launch of Ireland's newest five-mile road race along the streets of Killarney. The race, which is being termed “The race for all", has been launched and is to take place on Good Friday. Athletes, runners, joggers, Paralympians and fun runners are set to descend on Killarney. The "Streets of Killarney FiveMile" is hosted by the very successful Killarney Valley Athletic Club and will be run on a flat fast route throughout the town. Tourists, families and friends will be able to support the participants from the foot-

paths. “This is great news for the town and the proceeds of the race for the viability of the Killarney Valley athletics track located in the centre of the school area of the town,” said the club’s Jer Griffin. “Over 3,000 school students in the locality avail of the facility which is operated and managed by the club. There is a wonderful bespoke T-shirt for every participant with super prizes and refreshments. “The great team of volunteers from Killarney valley, in advance of this wonderful event would like to thank Kerry County Council and the Gardaí".

Local Green Party rep Diarmaid Griffin has said the new Deposit Return Scheme will be a ‘game changer’ for recycling.

Deposit Return Scheme welcomed in Killarney town The new deposit and return scheme for plastic bottles and aluminium cans will be a ‘game changer’ for recycling after several local stores signed up to the scheme. The Deposit Return Scheme came into effect on February 1 (our full guide to the scheme is published on page 28) and has been welcomed by local Green Party members. The new, nationwide money-back scheme for plastic drinks bottles and aluminium cans was rolled out on Thursday this week. The scheme incentivises people to return used drinks containers so that they can be successfully recycled into new containers. Diarmaid Griffin has been nominated to run in the local elections this summer by the Green Party. He said: “Along with the successful Killarney Coffee Cup Project, this initiative paves the way for cleaner streets, parks, and waterways. This scheme is a game changer for recycling and is set to reduce the number of plastic bottles and aluminium cans that go to landfill, and into our natural environment.” Meanwhile several local SuperValu and Centra stores have signed up for the scheme and will provide bottle banks where recyclable materials can be ex-

changed for cash. These include Daly’s SuperValu on the Park Road, and the Centra Stores on Muckross Road and at the The Reeks at the Cleeney Roundabout. “As part of our strategy to build more sustainable communities and play our part in protecting the planet, we are delighted to roll out the DRS scheme across our SuperValu and Centra stores in Kerry. By investing €28m in the installation of over 600 Reverse Vending Machines in every county in Ireland we hope to make returns as convenient as possible for everyone,” said Ian Allen, Managing Director SuperValu and Centra. From February 1 , when you buy a drink in a plastic bottle or aluminium can with the Re-turn logo, you will pay a small deposit in addition to the price of the drink. When you return your empty, undamaged drinks container to any participating retail outlet, you get your deposit back in full. A deposit of 15 cents will apply to containers from 150ml to 500mls, while a deposit of 25 cents will apply to containers between 500ml and 3 litres.

Seven boy racer cars seized during Rally of the Lakes A total of seven vehicles were seized during last year’s Rally of the Lakes. Local gardai set up a monitoring desk at Killarney Garda station during the event last May. Gardaí specifically targeted the activities of “boy racers". Eight arrests for drink or

drug driving were made. The figures were released at last Friday’s Joint Policing Committee meeting in Killarney by Sergeant Dermot O’Connell. Additionally, 35 fixed charge penalty notices were issued for driving without due care and attention, 42 for speeding and 10 for drivers caught using a mobile phone while driving.

was going to be amazing. He has such a wonderful way of getting the best out of everyone,” said KMS PRO Linda O’Donoghue. “Sunday was a full day for Michael Young our musical director. He had the full cast together for some of the songs. We are so lucky to have him in Killarney Musical Society. Irish soccer hero Liam Brady will be the guest speaker at the tenth anniversary Liam O’Connor Show at St Brendan’s College in April. The annual show, led by local musician and legendary accordionist Liam O’Connor is one of the highlights of the school year. Past guest speakers included the voice of the GAA Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, president of University College Cork Dr. Michael Murphy, renowned rugby coach Joe Schmidt, legendary Hurling manager Brian Cody alongside RTE GAA commentator Marty Morrissey, rugby players Mick Galway and Tony Buckley, Kerry footballer Kieran Donaghy and Galway hurler Joe Canning. Brady played 72 times for Ireland and his illustrious career included trophy-winning spells with Arsenal in England and Juventus in Italy. Later he became an astute soccer pundit on RTE alongside Johnny Giles and Eamon Dunphy. His recently-published autobiography also reveals his broad musical tastes, including Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones and Pavarotti.

“As you can imagine, Liam Brady has enormous demands on his time, so I am absolutely delighted to announce his appearance as we celebrate 10 years of the Liam O’Connor Show at St Brendan’s College in Killarney,” said O’Connor. Also appearing on what promises to be another momentous night for Irish music will be O’Connor’s own family band featuring Saoirse on vocals, concertina and keyboards, Oisín, who plays guitars, keyboards and percussion, and Cillian on drums, as well as the St Brendan’s College Choir and Music Group. St Brendan’s College has a fine reputation on the music front, not least because of the skills of two remarkably dedicated music teachers in Niamh O’Connell and Mish O’Donoghue. The 2024 Liam O’Connor Show will take place on April 18 at 8 pm at St Brendan’s College.Tickets are already available for purchase from www.ticketstop.ie

Children make donation to local burgled church Children from second class from Scoil Bhríde, Loreto, Muckross are being hailed heroes after donating money raised during their First Confession to a local church that was recently burgled. Gardaí continue to investigate a break-into the Church of the Holy Spirit in Muckross late last month. A sum of money was taken from the donations box in the church after thieves forced open the box to access the contents with a consaw. The incident occurred between 2.45pm on Friday January 19 and 4pm on Saturday, January 20 at the church in Muck-

ross which is also known as Gortahoonig church. Scoil Bhríde pupils made their First Penance this week. “The children decided to make a donation to Fr. Kieran O'Brien for the upkeep of Muckross Church after they heard about the recent burglary in the church,” said teacher Padraig O'Sullivan.

The Wander Wild Team Wandering wild in our very own National Park is a gift that keeps on giving with every season.

An outdoor enthusiast’s playground with endless activities and spectacular scenery in every direction. An expanse of rugged, mountainous country that sweeps down to ‘our’ world-famous Lakes of Killarney. Renowned for our warmth and hospitality all over the world, the non-profit Wander Wild Festival, in its third year, is a credit to the volunteers and an asset to tourists and locals alike. This month, I met up with Pat Chawke and Paul O’Neill to hear how the preparations for one of our first festivals of 2024 are going. What exactly is the Wander Wild Festival? “Wander Wild is a unique adventure and wellness festival with over 100 activity-filled events set amongst the lakes and mountains of the 25,000-acre Killarney National Park [a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve] where Killarney Town is the festival’s ‘Base-Camp’” Pat explained. “Our programme is built with sustainability at its core, activities are experienced in a nature-positive way and throughout the festival people have the opportunity to learn new ways of being and living more sustainably. This year’s festival, supported by Fáilte Ireland and sponsored by Nature Valley will take place on March 22-24,” Paul continued. So tell me, what should one expect during the festival? “Great Craic!!” Paul replied. “There are also over 100 different events and activities in the Reeks, the Park, the Town and other locations. We provide a bus to every activity outside town and encourage people to leave their own cars at home” Paul said. “We also provide volunteering opportunities during the festival. During the day, people are in the outdoors, at the wellness hub, urban ori-

enteering, enjoying music and chatting in Basecamp or discovering on the food trail” Pat continued. It sounds like a lot of coordination. Is it a difficult event to schedule? “Yes,” Pat replied as he took a deep breath. “The festival is like a business. We have to be involved in setting goals, drawing up a budget, securing venues, booking activity providers and artists, developing and executing a marketing plan, sourcing funding and sponsorship, developing a safety plan, coordinating volunteers, ensuring that each event has adequate insurance, manage permissions and licences required from the local authority, the Gardaí, the NPWS, the Fire Officer and plan for inclement weather etc”. I’d imagine the festival contributes to the local economy. “In the long term, the festival positions Killarney as the Great Outdoors capital of Ireland and highlights the enormous

range of activities that are available, most of them year-round. In the past, Killarney has made a good living from accommodating visitors who sat on a bus and drove around the ring of Kerry,” Paul explained. “The next generation of visitors will want to have more active experiences. In the short term, local activity providers are contracted to provide activities and accommodation providers, cafes, bars, supermarkets etc. all benefit from the spending power of festival attendees. Wander Wild is also about sustainability” Pat replied. Who is responsible for the creation of this wonderful Wander Wild Festival? “Wander Wild is a Chamber of Tourism & Commerce festival and has a committee of volunteers that give up an incredible amount of their time for free, from as early as September to April every year, to plan and execute the festival. We work very closely with Kerry County Council, NPWS, the Gardaí and the Reeks Forum

to ensure that all elements of the festival are delivered safely and with little negative impact on our environment. Fáilte Ireland has been incredibly supportive of the festival and Brand Killarney. The festival is not for profit and any surplus generated is invested back into the festival” said Pat. Does the Festival connect with the youth of Killarney at all? Wander Wild has a very important educational remit as part of our mission. We want to heighten awareness of the very special environment that we are fortunate to live in. We have workshops with the 5th years from the town’s schools covering issues such as biodiversity, responsible use of the Park, Mindfulness, the importance of the outdoors to mental health and other topics. We have also arranged for talks in the schools from individuals with special formative stories to tell.

Land purchase to extend graveyard hits “stumbling block” Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill believes that the people of Beaufort are extremely worried by the news that negotiations to purchase land adjoining Churchtown Burial Ground to provide more grave spaces had hit a stumbling block, when everybody thought that a deal had been agreed. “The land in question is the perfect fit for what is required in this case and everybody had been confident that the major problem of no more local spaces available for burials in Beaufort, had been solved. Somehow, a hiccup has appeared and I am now making a special plea to all sides to sit around the table and iron out any difficulties or misunderstanding that may have presented themselves. I will offer to act as Chairman for such a meeting, if required, as I did previously,” said Councillor Cahill. Speaking at a recent meeting of Kerry

County Council where he raised the matter, Councillor Cahill said: "This is the single biggest issue in the Parish and families are extremely concerned that loved ones will have to be buried in a different Burial Ground outside the Parish. It is also my understanding that there are only one or two plots left and this needs to be resolved at the earliest possible date.” “I have had many representations from residents of Beaufort on this most sensitive of issues, as well as from Beaufort Community Council and Tidy Towns and of course the Churchtown Burial Ground Committee, all of whom are extremely worried by the lack of grave spaces in their own Parish. It has been reported that the remaining spaces are allocated on an internal pathway, in a section that was previously prone to flooding. This is absolutely not good enough and we must sort the land purchase out urgently,” said Councillor Cahill.

COMMUNITY

SPOTLIGHT

Killarney Lions Club are roaring ahead The Killarney Lions Club are one of those community groups that go quietly about their business and not many people are aware of how much great work they do locally. The group, which was first set up in 1970, is now in its 54th year and has a great tradition of volunteering. One example of that tradition was last year’s outgoing president John Fuller who is the son of one of the founding members. Dr. Patrick Fuller helped set up the community group and over 50 years on his son continues to give his time generously. In this week’s edition of Community Spotlight I caught up with the current president of the Killarney Lions Club Denis Doolan. Denis is a Killarney man through and through but has spent much of his professional career traveling the world with the Special Olympics. His expertise lies in training and development and after many years working abroad he finally made his way back home to Killarney where he is now heading up Culture, Inclusion and Diversity with A.I.B. Shortly

after moving home Denis was eager to contribute locally and found himself at home with the Killarney Lions Club. I asked Denis to summarise what the club is all about in a few lines, “We are the Killarney town branch of Lions Clubs Ireland. Our club motto is ‘We Serve’. Our members are all from the local Killarney community and we give our time freely when required. Our projects are intended to aid the local community and persons within the community that need assistance”. Denis explains that the Killarney Lions Club has a few core activities each year that help them to support local charities, groups and families in need. “We have a number of events and projects we are involved in every year such as our annual golf classic which runs around May each year. The event, which is one of the long-

est running charity golf days in Killarney, chooses local beneficiaries each year and is always a well-supported day out. Last year Kerry Cancer Support Group and Kerry Mountain Rescue benefited from the golf classic. Our Annual Food Appeal is another important campaign where we collect money on the streets and otherwise and purchase food, pack it and deliver it to the needy at Christmas. Thanks to the support of Tesco, Daly’s and Dunnes, we set up foodbanks in their stores and while doing their shop, locals could donate an extra item of food for our Christmas Hampers. This year we distributed 102 hampers, the most ever, which probably isn’t surprising with everything we are seeing with the cost of living at the moment. Last year the Lions Club launched ‘A message in a bottle’ campaign. Linking up with local organisations such as Killarney Active Retirement Group, the club created a clever initiative for the elderly, those living alone or those with an illness. Basically the bottles come with a health information form. Locals who take a

particular medication fill out their information and put it in a bottle which is left inside their fridge. If there is an emergency call out, the first responders will recognise the bottle and open it. The clever idea helps first responders to make quick and well-informed decisions based on one’s medical history” Denis explained. In recent years the Lions Club have gotten involved in some environmental projects. Linking up with local secondary schools they have carried out three rounds of planting in the community. Working with Kerry County Council, the Lions Club take students out of the classroom and into the community, educating them on different topics. At the end of 2022, students of all three secondary schools enjoyed days out in Maurice O’ Donoghue Park where they planted Daffodils. They also planted trees there and near MD O’Shea’s roundabout on the bypass in previous years. “Through our work with the schools, the club has actually gained a couple of young lions who are eager to get involved and support our fundraising and other activities in their school life which we are very proud of” Denis explained. While the majority of the Lions work revolves around local needs, they do extend a helping hand further afield. One particular project is positively impacting some of the poorest people in Africa. Last year they joined forces with local opticians; Urban Optics, Specsavers, Kennellys and The Optical Suite for their ‘Spectacles Campaign’. Locals are asked to donate

The clubs will convene between the 8-10th of March at the Plaza Hotel in Killarney for the Lions Ireland national conference, the first time it will be hosted in Killarney. “We are expecting more than 100 nation-

Kerry GAA star Aidan O’Mahony raising awareness for Cardiac Risk in the Young Five-time All-Ireland winning Kerry footballer and CRY Ireland ambassador Aidan O’Mahony is gearing up for another remarkable journey as he prepares to conquer the iconic Camino de Santigo. This venture is more than just a personal challenge for the Rathmore Garda; it's a heartfelt initiative to raise crucial funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY Ireland). The ‘Camino For CRY’ fundraising trip will commence on the September 6. Joining Aidan on the trip is CRY Trustee Liam Herlihy. In 2011, Liam sadly lost his daughter Niamh as a result of Sudden Cardiac Death at just 21 years old. Ever since, Liam and his family are screened regularly at the CRY Centre and work tirelessly to raise funds to support the charity. Aidan and Liam are asking people to join them this September and help raise funds for CRY. "The Camino trip provides an avenue to escape and detach from reality. It serves as a space to commune with nature while simultaneously delving into an adventure of self-discovery and focusing on personal well-being. The journey becomes even more meaningful as it contributes

to raising funds for CRY Ireland,” said O’Mahony. “Leading the team on two previous occasions in 2019 and 2022, I witnessed the start of lifelong friendships and was profoundly touched by the stories shared by those impacted by Sudden Cardiac Death, highlighting the invaluable support provided by CRY. I am excited to participate yet again this year and extend an invitation for others to join me on this meaningful endeavour." CRY Ireland provides assistance to individuals and families impacted by Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) and those living with inherited cardiac conditions. Support is extended through our family support programme. CRY also offers a freephone helpline, which provides a compassionate listening ear to those affected by these cardiac issues across the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Donegal landscapes Bank of Ireland branch set inspire latest Killarney for major refurbishment Camera Club winner The landscapes of Ireland has turned one Ukrainian resident of Killarney into an award winning photographer. Iryna Halaieva was a fashion photographer in her homeland. She joined Killarney Camera Club to make new friends and this month was named as the winner in the club’s most recent photography competition. Her photo of Fanad Head in County Donegal impressed judges. “While I usually travel by myself when taking photographs, I heard that Rodney O’Callaghan, a great photographer from Cork, was leading a photography workshop to distant Donegal. So, without any hesitation I joined his workshop,” she said.

“Donegal was an absolutely amazing place for landscape photography. Landscape photography is new for me, as in Ukraine I was interested in fashion photography only. Now I cannot imagine my life without landscape photography and Ireland is the best place for doing it. The photo was taken on a cloudy morning. I used a relatively slow shutter speed to give a silky look to the water and this also gives a sense of movement in the clouds.” For more info on Killarney Camera Club email secretary@killarneycameraclub.ie

The Killarney branch of Bank of Ireland will undergo a major refurbishment this year. The New Street bank is one of 18 branches nationwide earmarked for improved access and new ATMS. The bank says the upgrading of ATMs is the biggest investment in such machines in over ten years. The ATMs can be used for both withdrawals and lodgements and the majority will ‘recycle’ cash so deposited cash can be used for withdrawals too.. “Like any other company, being profitable allows us to improve our business. Given the large number of customers

which we serve, major re-investment is required every year. I’m really happy that this latest investment will see all customers across all counties benefit with the most modern and efficient ATMs,” said Susan Russell, CEO, Bank of Ireland Retail Ireland. “As a full service retail bank, with a presence in communities throughout the island of Ireland, we are committed to continually improving our services and the financial wellbeing of customers. This means re-investing purposefully in branches, contact centres, technology, ATMs and other infrastructure to ensure our customers have the most modern and efficient banking available.”

Pop Up Gaeltacht returns for 2024 The first Pop Up Gaeltacht of 2024 will take place on February 9 at Courtney’s Bar on Plunkett Street. The establishment of the Pop Up Gaeltacht in the past year has brought together Killarney’s Irish speaking community and organisers are hoping to see plenty of new and old faces on the night. “As was the case for our final event of

2023, beer pong and lively traditional music will go hand in hand with brilliant conversation between people of all ages,” said organiser Mark Cooper. “Upstairs in Courtney's bar on Plunkett Street will be a fantastic start to 2024 for Gaeilgeoirí in Killarney.Come along, bring a friend and have some fun. All levels of Irish are very welcome.” The event starts at 7:30 pm.

Ukrainian registered New special needs base vehicles on Kerry roads approved for Rathmore

A local councillor has raised concerns on the number of Ukrainian registered vehicles on Kerry roads.

Speaking at the Joint Policing Committee meeting on in Killarney last Friday, Cllr Martin Grady said he was concerned that some of these cars and vans may not have correct insurance and valid National Car Test certificates. He said: “ Kerry has the most with 12% of the overall take of Ukrainian refugees into the country, many of them having brought their vehicles with them. “They are not obliged to pay VRT on the vehicles therefore no NCT, National Car

Test is required, we have no guarantee these vehicles are roadworthy for their own safety and the safety of other road users.” “Following research I found not all Ukraine insurance policies provide cover in the EU, there is a list available from the Insurance Bureau of Ukraine what insurance companies provide this and those that don't. Frontier Green Card cover can be purchased when entering the EU , however this is only available for a maximum of one year, many of these vehicles are here longer than a year at this stage.”

Minister for Education and Kerry T.D Norma Foley has announced the approval of a new special needs base for Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra in Rathmore. The school, which has around 400 students, will be getting a new modular building for two special needs classes under the Additional School Accommodation Scheme. “I welcome the opportunity to provide a new special needs base for Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra. This is about children and young people growing up and learning together to the greatest possible extent. Having an education system that is a broad reflection of Irish society is important to me as Minister,” she said. Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra is a modern co-educational secondary school established in 1998 with the amalgamation of St Mary's Presentation Convent Secondary School and Rathmore Vocational School.

This three- year programme provides aspiring industrial coating technicians with the comprehensive training and hands-on experience they need to excel in this rewarding field.

EXPERT TUTORIAL AND INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION

Under the expert guidance of Liebherr's experienced professionals, apprentices will gain a thorough understanding of the latest industrial coating techniques and practices. The programme's blend of theoretical and practical instruction ensures that apprentices develop a comprehensive skillset. The apprenticeship covers essential aspects such as surface preparation for coating adhesion, various coating methods (shot blasting, priming, painting), material selection, and quality control inspection and testing. The goal is to provide apprentices with a solid skill set and qualifications that meet or exceed industry standards.

EXPANDING HORIZONS WITH APPRENTICE EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

Beyond the classroom and workshops, the apprenticeship programme offers a unique opportunity to broaden horizons through an international apprentice exchange. In the third year of the apprenticeship, participants will have the chance to immerse themselves in the world of industrial coating at Liebherr's sister companies in Austria and Germany. This inval-

uable experience will provide apprentices with exposure to diverse working environments and enhance their cultural understanding.

Everyone has been very helpful, and I work with a great team." Embracing the challenges, Cian finds joy in the changing nature of his work. "I like the challenge; every day is different. I like making progress and looking back at what I've achieved." When asked if he would recommend this groundbreaking apprenticeship, Cian responds with enthusiasm: "Absolutely, it's an excellent opportunity for young people. A first of its kind in Ireland. The opportunity to work at Liebherr's factories in Austria and Germany is great. It's a brilliant opportunity to build a career."

Minister Smyth welcomes the launch of the new scheme, which will reduce litter and boost Ireland’s recycling rates. The Deposit Return Scheme — a new, nationwide money-back scheme for plastic drinks bottles and aluminium cans — is being rolled out from today Friday. The scheme incentivises people to return used drinks containers so that they can be successfully recycled into new containers. The Deposit Return Scheme is a key commitment of the Programme for Government 2020, and is a fundamental building block of a circular economy. About 5 million drinks are consumed in single-use containers in Ireland each day. As well as boosting recycling rates, the Deposit Return Scheme will significantly reduce the number of bottles and cans being littered or sent to landfill or incineration. From today, 1 February 2024, when you

2.02.2024

Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme is now live buy a drink in a plastic bottle or aluminium can with the Re-turn logo, you will pay a small deposit in addition to the price of the drink. When you return your empty, undamaged drinks container to any participating retail outlet, you get your deposit back in full. A deposit of 15 cents will apply to containers from 150ml to 500mls, while a deposit of 25 cents will apply to containers between 500ml and 3 litres. Welcoming the launch of the new scheme, Minister of State with responsibility for Communications and the Circular Economy, Ossian Smyth said: “I am delighted to launch our national Deposit Return Scheme today. This is an

exciting, new initiative which will boost recycling rates, greatly reduce litter, and improve the environment. It will get bottles and cans off our roadsides and beaches and contribute to the circular economy by turning waste drinks containers into new bottles and cans. “We know deposit return schemes work — they operate effectively in over 40 countries around the world, including 15 in Europe, where the average EU collection rate is 92%. By giving these containers a financial value, it incentivises consumers to return them. I think people in Ireland will really get behind this scheme and make it a great success; we saw this with the introduction of the plastic bag

levy and the Euro. “The Deposit Return Scheme is a once-in-a-generation development for the Irish beverage industry. I want to acknowledge the collaboration and the leadership industry has shown in establishing a complex new system in a relatively short timeframe. I would also like to recognise the smaller businesses who have opted into the scheme. They can be assured of my ongoing support in making the scheme work for local businesses and communities.” More information on the Deposit Return Scheme, including an FAQ, can be found on the Re-turn website at www.re-turn.ie.

DUP ends two-year boycott marking return to power-sharing The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has ended its two-year boycott of Northern Ireland's power-sharing government, marking a significant breakthrough in the region's political deadlock. The party's decision, announced on Wednesday, comes after weeks of negotiations with the UK government over changes to the post-Brexit trading arrangements that have been a major source of contention in Northern Ireland. DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson said

the party would return to Stormont, the Northern Ireland Assembly, once the UK government implements new legislation that addresses unionist concerns in relation to the Northern Ireland Protocol. The protocol is part of the Brexit deal that established a customs border between Northern Ireland and Great Britain to maintain an open border with the Republic of Ireland. Donaldson has long argued that the protocol undermines Northern Ireland's place within the UK, and he had refused to re-join the power-sharing govern-

ment until the UK government took action to address unionist concerns. The new legislation is expected to allow goods to flow more freely between Northern Ireland and Great Britain, while also protecting the EU's single market. The DUP's decision to end its boycott is a major step forward in restoring stability to Northern Ireland. The party's return to power-sharing will allow the devolved government to function again and address a range of pressing issues, including the cost of living crisis, healthcare, and education.

French farmers block major highways in protest French farmers have taken to the streets this week, blocking major highways and dumping imported produce in protest against government policies they say are harming their livelihoods. The farmers are protesting a number of issues, including, low farmgate prices, green regulations and free trade policies that are driving down prices for their produce. Farmers have been using their tractors to block major highways in an effort to disrupt traffic. They are also dumping imported produce on the streets in their opposition to free trade agreements and protests have been taking place at government buildings in Paris and other cities in an effort to pressure the government to address their concerns.

Tackling Dog Poo with DNA The Italian province of Bolzano is adopting an unusual strategy to combat the persistent problem of dog poo on public streets. Instead of relying on traditional enforcement methods, Bolzano has implemented a program that utilizes DNA testing to identify and penalise irresponsible dog owners. The initiative, which began in December 2023, mandates that all dogs in the province be registered in a DNA database. Dog owners are required to provide a swab sample from their pet's cheek, which is then analysed and

stored in the database. Once the database is established, street cleaners and health officials will collect stray dog droppings and send them for DNA testing. If a match is found in the database, the owner of the corresponding dog will be issued a fine ranging from €292 to €1,048. The DNA testing program in Bolzano has shown initial signs of success. According to local authorities, the number of complaints about dog waste has decreased significantly since the program's implementation. Additionally, the city has reported a 30 percent increase in the registration of dogs in the DNA database.

Irish Defence Forces relax grooming standards This week, Irish Defence Forces (IDF) announced a significant relaxation of grooming standards for its personnel, marking a shift away from traditional military regulations and towards a more modern and inclusive approach. The changes, which came into effect on February 1, 2024, aim to enhance the professionalism and image of the IDF while also attracting and retaining new talent. One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a broader range of hairstyle options for female soldiers. Previously, female military personnel were limited to short hairstyles or buns with a net. Now, they have the flexibility to choose from six different hairstyle options, which are all depicted in a reference guide. These options are designed to be practical, professional, and complement the military

uniform. Additionally, male soldiers will now have the option to apply to grow a beard. This change is subject to approval by the soldier's unit commander and is based on specific operational considerations. Beards must be kept neatly trimmed and must not interfere with the wearing of protective equipment. The IDF's decision to relax grooming standards reflects a broader effort to attract new talent to a force with declining recruitment numbers and an aging workforce. "We want to ensure that our personnel are proud to represent the IDF and that our image is one of professionalism and inclusivity," said Sergeant Major Keith Caffrey, who played a key role in developing the new grooming guidelines. "We believe that these changes will help us achieve that goal."

Remembering St. Brigid St. Brigid is a central figure in Irish history and tradition. While historical details are scarce, her legacy as a saint, a mother superior, and symbol of compassion shines brightly. Born around 450 AD, some stories paint her as the daughter of a pagan chieftain and a Christian slave, while others claim noble birth. Regardless, her path led her to faith and service. Around 480 AD, Brigid established a monastic community in Kildare. This innovative centre welcomed both men and women, fostering learning, spirituality, and practical skills like metalworking and farming. Brigid's influence extended far beyond the The Lilywhites County. She founded other monasteries, cared for the sick and poor, and championed the rights of women. Her compassion earned her the title "Mary of the Gael," embodying the nurturing spirit of the Virgin Mary for the

ICJ rule in favour of South Africa's genocide case In rcent weeks South Africa's legal team presented a case that alleged that Israel's actions in Gaza, including its blockade and military operations, had created conditions that amounted to genocide. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) this week ruled in favour of South Africa's case against Israel. The ICJ said it had jurisdiction to rule in the case filed by South Africa accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. The interim ruling issued by the court this week ordered six provisional measures, including for Israel to take all meas-

ures to prevent genocidal acts, prevent and punish the direct and public incitement to genocide, and take immediate and effective steps to ensure the provision of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza. The ICJ also ordered Israel to preserve evidence of genocide and to submit a report to the court within a month regarding its compliance with the order. The diplomatic victory for South Africa marks a significant step forward in a hope that the conflict, which has claimed more than 26,000 lives in just a few months, can soon come to an end.

Irish people. Brigid's feast day, February 1st, coincides with the ancient Celtic festival Imbolc, marking the start of spring. This connection highlights her association with creativity, fertility, and new beginnings. Legends and folklore surround Brigid, weaving tales of her miracles, wisdom, and connection to nature. She's seen as a patron saint of poets, healers and farmers, reflecting her diverse contributions. Though centuries have passed, St. Brigid remains a powerful symbol. Her life embodies faith, innovation, and compassion, leaving an enduring mark on Irish identity and the hearts of many. Whether you delve into historical accounts, enchanting legends, or attend one of the many celebratory events held in across Kerry this Bank Holiday weekend, her story offers much to explore.

KCC TY STUDENTS

BREAK LANGUAGE BARRIERS

On Thursday, January 25th, Transition Year students from Killarney Community College showcased their linguistic prowess and cultural understanding at the coveted Think Languages Final, held at the Clock Tower, in the Department of Education, in Dublin. Among the 180 schools that entered, Killarney Community College emerged as remarkable runners-up, earning accolades for their dedication to promoting diversity, language, and culture. The Clock Tower at the Department of Education provided a fitting backdrop for the final, where students presented their linguistic journey highlighting the importance of multilingualism and cross-cultural exchange. A highlight of the event was the 'Reunion' style role-play presented by Champion Team Captain Kieran Moloney, Marketing and Social Media Manager Zoe McDonald, Production Manager Aine McSweeney, Activities Manager Mia Moynihan, Festival Scheduling Manager Fionn Lynch and Research Manager Wiktoria Gluza,

encapsulating their enriching Think Languages experience. Reflecting on their experiences, the students recounted a plethora of activities that honed their language skills and enriched their cultural understanding. During the week-long festival preceding the Think Languages Final, students immersed themselves in a tapestry of cultural exploration and linguistic discovery. From fencing lessons to festive Christmas sewing sessions steeped in Polish tradition, the event celebrated the rich mosaic of languages and customs. Sign language, taught through Irish, illuminated the importance of inclusivity, while a live Martial Arts workshop courtesy of Kerry Martial Arts School, exemplified the fusion of physical discipline and linguistic proficiency. The spirit of diversity echoed throughout the festival as students orchestrated a panoramic snapshot capturing representatives from each of the school's 32 nationalities, symbolizing unity in plurality.

WHAT'S

THE BUZZ?

OUT THIS VALENTINE’S

Bob Marley: One Love Bob Marley: One Love is an upcoming American biographical musical drama film directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and written by Green, Terence Winter, Frank E. Flowers, and Zach Baylin, from a story by Winter and Flowers. It is based on the life of reggae singer and songwriter Bob Marley, from his rise to fame up until his death in 1981. The film stars Kingsley BenAdir as Marley, alongside Lashana Lynch as Rita Marley, and James Norton as Chris Blackwell. The film follows Marley's journey from his humble beginnings in Jamaica to his rise to international stardom as a pioneer of reggae music. It explores his struggles with poverty, racism, and political turmoil, as well as his commitment to social justice and his message

of peace and unity. Marley's music played a pivotal role in the fight against apartheid in South Africa and continues to inspire people around the world today. The soundtrack for the movie will feature a mix of original Bob Marley and the Wailers recordings and covers by contemporary artists. The full soundtrack has not yet been released, but some of the songs that have been confirmed to appear include "One Love", "Is This Love", "Buffalo Soldier", "Redemption Song" and "Three Little Birds" It is apt that the story of a man that preached peace, love and unity is to be released February 16, Valentine’s weekend and if the trailers are anything to go by, it promises to be a powerful and moving tribute to a musical icon.

2024 Skoda Kodiaq is now available at Liam Lynch Motors The all-new Skoda Kodiaq is now available to order from Liam Lynch Motors in Farranfore. Škoda unveiled their second generation Kodiaq, in Berlin last October. The new model promises to pick up where the original left off, with a powerful new look, innovative features and even more practicality. Physically, the new Kodiaq is even bigger and more imposing. It has grown by 61mm in length and now stretches to 4,758mm. Boot volume has increased by up to 75 litres over its predecessor. Meanwhile, the Kodiaq’s aerodynamics have also been improved, with a new drag coefficient of just 0.282. From the outside, the new generation Kodiaq demonstrates its new Modern Solid design language with a protruding

grille that can be ordered with 14 light elements forming a striking light strip between the LED headlamps. “The Kodiaq first went on sale in Ireland in 2017 and became an instant success, finding 11,500 happy homes over a sixyear sales period. It received a light cosmetic facelift in 2021 and even outsold the Octavia model the following year,” said John Donegan, Brand Director, Škoda Ireland. “The Kodiaq has always remained in high demand and, even with the new model on the horizon, there are very few unallocated current generation Kodiaqs available for immediate purchase. Therefore, I would advise interested customers to discuss the next generation Kodiaq with their local dealer at their earliest convenience.”

Four-car youth rally team launched by Killarney and District Motor Club

Killarney and District Motor Club will field a four-car team in this year’s Junior 1000 Rally Series. The championship, limited to 1000cc rally cars, for 14- to 17-year-olds runs alongside the Sligo Pallets Forestry Rally Championship. Now in its third season, the controlled se-

ries gives young drivers their first taste of rallying – one of the key rules is they must have a very experienced co-driver on board who drives on the road sections. The opening round is the February 18 Killarney Forestry Rally which is based in Castleisland. Killarney and District Motor Club launched the event at the River Island

Hotel on Saturday last. The four-car team was unveiled at the launch and will operate under the KDMC2 Youth Academy programme, which was started last year. The four drivers are, Dave Slattery Jr (Hyundai i10), Frank Wharton (Toyota Aygo), Sean White (Peugeot 107) and Morgan Moore (Skoda Citigo).

Killarney and District Motor Club vice-chairman Mike O’Shea was the brainchild behind the KDMC2 Youth Programme. “The programme has grown legs and these young drivers now have people around them that will encourage them along,” he said. “They will have mentors around for aspects of rallying from the sporting side of it to mechanical.” The four drivers will compete in the full season of Junior rally events which includes more forest rallies in Tipperary, Cork and Clare and a series of single venue tarmac rallysprints in Tipperary and Cork.

Powered Personal Transporters and fire hazard precautions In recent years there has been a huge increase in the usage of powered personal transporters (PPTs) including e-scooters, e-bikes and hover boards. These items are battery powered and, in most cases, powered by lithium-ion or li-ion batteries. As popularity and usage increases, so too does the risk that fires caused by e-bikes and e-scooters pose to life and property, due to damaged or failing batteries. In 2023, London Fire Brigade reported that on average they were called to an e-bike or e-scooter fire once every 2 days. In comparison, a total of 116 PPT related fires were attended to during 2022. The risk of fire is increased when charging unsafe or damaged batteries.

In the UK many shopping centres, rail and transport services have now banned these PPT items from their trains, platforms and premises. Lithium battery fires can spread quickly out of control, and within minutes have started a large fire. If a fire occurs, it may reignite, making these fires particularly dangerous. Before a failing lithium battery catches fire, there are often a few warning signs, all of which will require you to take immediate action to stay safe and reduce the risk of fire: •H eat: If your device’s battery feels

extremely hot to the touch, there’s a chance it’s defective and may start a fire. •B ulging: If your battery looks swollen you should stop using it immediately. • Noise: Failing lithium batteries have also been reported to make hissing or cracking sounds. •S mell: A strong or unusual smell coming from the battery could also be a sign of it failing. •P erformance: A failure to fully charge or longer charge times can be a sign that your battery is failing. •S moke: If your battery or device is smoking, a fire has already started. If your battery shows any of these signs of failing, immediately turn off the

Only two vacant property grants drawn down in Kerry New figures published this week show just 127 vacant property refurbishment grants have been drawn down by homeowners since the scheme came into effect. That’s about one in 50 of the 6,300 applications that have been made so far, with just over half (3,274) actually approved since the scheme was launched in July 2022. Five local authorities have yet to pay out any grants, while others have only released a handful of payments. Kerry has had 379 applications with 92 approved and only two drawn down to date. When the vacant homes refurbishment scheme first launched in July 2022, it was to help turn vacant and derelict properties in towns and villages into a permanent home. This was later expanded to include eligible properties in

cities and rural parts of the country. Applicants have 13 months to carry out the refurbishment works after grant approval is received, which has been a contributing factor in the low number of drawdowns, according to local authorities. Homeowners previously had 18 months to finish the works, but this changed to 13 months in May 2023. Data provided by councils shows there is also somewhat of an urban-rural divide when it comes to applications for the grant. In Kerry, the split is 68pc (258) rural and 31pc (121) urban. How it works:

The scheme allows access to up to €50,000 to renovate a vacant property, and up to €70,000 to restore a derelict house. However, the work must first be completed before the grant can be received. The grant process involves the local authority receiving, reviewing and validating applications before arranging for a qualified person to visit the property to check that it is possible to do the work and to assess the proposed cost. Following confirmation of a successful application and the works being completed, the local authority will conduct a final property visit to review that the work has been completed in line with grant application. Once the local authority is satisfied, it will then pay the grant.

CAO Reminders ahead KNOW YOUR RIGHTS of February 1st deadline Sick Leave and Sick Pay As the first significant deadline for CAO 2024 deadlines approaches on February the 1st at 5pm, it is very important that applicants and parents/guardians are clear on application process, dates and deadlines.

In the past, you had no legal right to be paid while you were on sick leave from work. However, this has changed and there is now a Statutory Sick Pay Scheme in place.

There are lots of helpful resources on www.cao.ie including video guides and a recording of the recent CAO webinar for applicants and parents/guardians. February the 1st is only the first deadline and there is plenty time to add in, take out and change the order of course choices when the Change of Mind Facility opens on May 7th up to the final deadline on July 1st at 5pm. Some restrictions do apply after the February 1st deadline.

What is the Statutory Sick Pay scheme (SSP)? Since 1 January 2023, you have a right to 3 days’ sick pay a year. This is called statutory sick pay (that means the legal minimum). Sick pay is paid by your employer at 70% of your normal pay up to a maximum of €110 a day. From 1 January 2024, paid sick leave will increase from 3 to 5 days a year. It will increase to 7 days in 2025 and 10 days in 2026 Sick days can be taken as consecutive days or non-consecutive days. The sick pay year is the calendar year, so it runs from 1 January to 31 December.

RESTRICTIONS FOR THE FEBRUARY 1ST DEADLINE

‘Restricted’ courses must be added in by February the 1st as they require some other form of assessment apart from Leaving Cert points such as an aptitude test or a portfolio. Students who are applying for Medicine must apply to do the HPAT by January 20th on https://hpat-ireland. acer.org/. Any students applying for the HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) or DARE (Disability Access Route to Education) schemes must have applied to CAO by February 1st. Applicants then have until March the 1st to complete those applications and up to March 15th to have supporting documentation sent to CAO (see www.accesscollege.ie) . In the case of mature applicants, most HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) require applications to be in by the February 1st deadline.

LANGUAGE EXEMPTIONS

Students who have language exemptions must process those exemptions for college applications when applying to colleges/universities which have Irish and/or a third language as an entry requirement. If applying to TCD, University of Limerick or Mary Immaculate College contact the relevant Admissions Office directly. In the case of NUI institutions which include UCC, UCD, Maynooth University, NUI Galway, RCSI, NCAD and associated colleges, the exemptions are processed online on www.nui.ie.

COURSE CHOICES

Applicants have the option of including 20 courses on CAO applications – 10 choices at level 8 (Honours Bachelor

Niamh Dwyer is a Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore and a member of Kerry Branch of IGC. See www.mycareerplan.ie or follow @mycareerplan on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

Degrees) and 10 at level 7/6 (Ordinary Bachelor Degrees / Higher Certificates). Filling in as many courses as possible gives applicants the best chance of being offered a place on a course at offer stage. It is essential to research course content carefully for all the courses to ensure that all choices are a suitable fit in terms of the genuine interest in modules, learning styles and assessment, work placement, study abroad options and career/ further study opportunities. The majority of level 7/6 courses have progression routes onto level 8. The lists operate independently of each other so, by filling up choices on both lists, applicants have a great chance of getting two offers, the top one for which they qualify for from both lists.

ORDER OF PREFERENCE

This is the golden rule of the CAO and a very common mistake made by students every year. Courses must be ranked in genuine order of preference, not in the order of the points from the previous year. Points for courses change each year and no one knows the points for 2024 until the day that the Round 1 offers are issued by CAO. ‘Order of Preference’ simply means placing the favourite course in as number 1, second favourite course as number 2 and so on down to choice number 10. It is essential to research the content of each course on both lists from choice 1 to 10 carefully.

How do I know if I am entitled to sick pay? To qualify for statutory sick pay you must be an employee and have worked for your employer for at least 13 continuous weeks before you are sick. You must also be certified by a GP as unable to work. If you have multiple employers, you can get 3 days paid sick leave from each employer, once you have 13 weeks service with that employer before you are sick. Can part-time workers get 3 days? Yes, both full-time and part-time employees can take 3 days paid sick leave. However, the amount you get paid for your sick leave (70% of your earnings, up to €110) is based on the average of your pay over the 13 weeks before you are on sick leave Do I need a medical cert to get sick pay? Under the sick leave legislation, you must be certified by a GP as unable to work to qualify for statutory sick pay. You should be certified from day 1 of your sick leave. You have a right to SSP from the first day you are off sick. Your employer cannot apply ‘waiting days’ before you get sick pay. If your employer has their own sick pay scheme that offers more generous benefits than SSP, you should be paid under those arrangements. The SSP is for employees who don’t have a company sick pay scheme or don’t qualify for it. How is my sick pay calculated? Your statutory sick leave payment must be paid at your normal daily rate. You are entitled to 70% of your normal pay, up to a maximum €110 a day.

What is normal daily pay? Your normal daily pay includes any regular bonus or allowance which do not change from week to week (but excludes overtime or commission). If your pay changes from week-toweek (for example, because of regular bonus payments or allowance), your sick pay is the average of your pay over the 13 weeks before you are on sick leave. Remember that sick pay is capped at a maximum of €110 a day. What happens if I am off sick for more than 3 days? If you are off work sick for more than 3 days, and you have enough PRSI contributions, you can apply to the Department of Social Protection (DSP) for a payment called Illness Benefit. If you do not have enough PRSI contributions, you should contact the DSP’s representative at your local health centre. They will assess your situation. How are my employment rights protected while I am on sick leave? Your employments rights are protected during sick leave. You are treated as being in employment while you are on sick leave. What are my options if I experience problems getting sick pay? If you do not get sick pay, contact your employer to try to resolve the issue informally first. If you cannot resolve the issue directly with your employer, you can make a formal complaint to the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC). Contact your local Citizens Information Centre for information on how to make a complaint to the WRC You must make your complaint within 6 months of the dispute. The time limit can be extended for a further 6 months if there is reasonable cause for the delay. Can an Employer be exempt from paying sick pay? An employer who is experiencing severe financial difficulties can apply to the Labour Court for an exemption to pay statutory sick pay. If an exemption is granted, it will be for a period of between 3 to 12 months. If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie You can also contact us by telephone or email: Killarney, Tel: 0818 07 7820 Email: killarney@citinfo.ie

Sarah O'Sullivan, Crosstown, Killarney graduated from University of Limerick last Wednesday with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Arts in Voice.

Birthday Wish Donie Fleming On Friday February 2nd, 2024, you will be 81. You’re the same dad as when we were young. You always had a welcome and a smile. When we called home and had a chat for a while. We had good days and bad days as all children do. Dad, you are always there to help us through. With Gods help, we will all be here with you. On February 2nd, 2025, when you will be 82. Your parents said you were a rogue the day you were born. You are still that rogue when we called this morning. With a glint in your eye. Mischief was never a far cry. Jokes were always your daily prayer. And pranks were your fresh air. These are simple words, but very true. We will always love you and be there for you.

Kerry expecting tough assignment against high-flying Monaghan NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1

________________________________________________________________________

Monaghan v Kerry Sunday at 1pm St Tiernach’s Park, Clones Live on TG4 app Will we ever learn? Despite reaching last year’s All-Ireland semi-final and despite surviving in Division 1 longer than any other team apart from Kerry, Monaghan were singled out as favourites for relegation before the league got underway last weekend. Fast forward to Saturday night and once again we were all left marvelling at their uncanny ability to upset the odds. Of course, they’re not safe yet. Far from it. But the manner in which they overcame the challenge of a strong Dublin team in Croke Park has set them up nicely for the rest of the league, particularly for this week’s match at home to Kerry. As things stand, Vinny Corey has to make do without talismanic goalkeeper Rory Beggan as he is currently pursuing a career in America’s NFL. Beggan has been integral to Monaghan’s fortunes down through the years so Corey must have been massively encouraged by the performance of incoming keeper Darren McDonnell, who had a fine game in the capital. AWAY DAY: Jack O'Connor and his Kerry team will be aiming for their first win of the season away to Monaghan. Photo: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.

Dynamic half forward Stephen O’Hanlon was also very impressive; he smashed in a spectacular goal and generally terrorised the Dublin defence with his speed and superb ball-carrying skills. The Ulster side are also decent at the back in defence, particularly in the full back line where Ryan Wylie, Killian Lavelle and Ryan O’Toole act as the last line of defence. Conversely, Kerry struggled offensively for long periods during their opening night defeat to Derry in Round 1. Seánie

O’Shea (0-5, 4f) was the only named inside forward to score while in the half forward line Dara Moynihan and Dylan Geaney, who was making his full debut, chipped in with one point apiece. Kerry boss Jack O’Connor might be prompted to make one or two changes up front with Conor Geaney possibly in line for his first competitive start in green and gold. The Dingle man came off the bench against Derry and expertly finished into an open goal from some distance to kickstart Kerry’s second-half revival. Geaney, who turns 28 this year, made his first appearance for Kerry way back in 2017. Losing to Derry has left supporters wondering if O’Connor will be tempted to recall David and Paudie Clifford for this

weekend’s trip north. The plan was to rest the Fossa pair in January and early February but even at this early juncture, the need to put points on the board is great. The Kerry bainisteoir will have to weigh up whether or not the need to spare the Cliffords, and simultaneously give other forwards a chance to find their feet, is greater. Tadhg Morley, who got married over the Christmas period and is catching up on his preparations, may also be in contention this time around. Elsewhere in Division 1, Mayo host Dublin on Saturday evening (7.30pm, RTÉ); Galway and Roscommon will both be looking for their first win when they meet in Hyde Park on Sunday (2pm); and also that afternoon Mickey Harte’s Derry will welcome neighbours Tyrone to Celtic Park (3.45pm, TG4).

Jack O’Connor might be prompted to make one or two changes up front

New boys need time to adapt | By Adam Moynihan Someone always gets both barrels when Kerry lose at home and this week it’s the turn of the attackers. The starting forwards managed just three points from play between them in Saturday’s 2-8 to 0-15 defeat to Derry and although there were mitigating factors – including a difficult-to-gauge wind – that’s simply not a healthy return. At this stage fans are desperate to see new players at the top end of the pitch, or at the very least something new from the players who have been knocking around a while. Dylan Geaney is a bright spark in that regard; the centre forward took his point well and his general play was very good for a guy making his first start at this level. Alongside him at No. 12, Cillian Burke is still adapting to the pace and physicality of senior intercounty football. The more minutes he gets, the faster that will happen, and the sooner he can begin to impact games in a meaningful way. Seánie O’Shea had his own mini-battle with Chrissy McKaigue, a game within the game, and he looked to be getting under the skin of the Derry stalwart. Which is no harm. O’Shea has been moving well and whether he’s at 14 or 11, you know he’s going to give you intensity and intelligence in abundance. As for Dara Moynihan, who seems to be one of those players in the ‘what have you done for me lately’ brigade as far some supporters are concerned, I thought he had a decent outing. He took his score nicely at a time when Kerry were struggling to create chances

MVP: Experienced defender Graham O'Sullivan was Kerry's best player against Derry. Photo: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.

and he handled a lot of ball in the second half, using it well. Micheál Burns, who was named at corner forward, didn’t quite have the impact he would have liked. He was taken off at half-time and was replaced by Conor Geaney. In the other corner, Killian Spillane wasn’t able to build on his showing in the McGrath Cup final and he was also eventually subbed off with no scores to his name. The fact that Conor Geaney came in, scored a goal and looked lively might spell trouble for Burns or Spillane in terms of team selection for Sunday’s match against Monaghan. Of course, one quick and easy way of improving Kerry’s forward division would be to stir David and Paudie Clifford from their resting state. The All-Star siblings do have some training

under their belts at this stage, although O’Connor has previously indicated that they would be sitting out the first couple of games. It may be hasty on O’Connor’s part to pull the emergency lever at this point. It would be unfair to level too much criticism at the forwards following the Derry defeat, especially when Kerry had deficiencies in more or less every department. The midfield battle was lost in the first half as Joe O’Connor and debutant Seán O’Brien struggled to get a foothold, particularly from Shane Ryan’s kickouts. Kerry’s backs should take some of the flak here as they didn’t seem to be killing themselves to break loose and provide options for a short one. Eventually Brian Ó Beaglaoich started to wriggle free and offer an out but it was too late for O’Brien, who was whipped off with

seven minutes to go in the first half. Taking him off at that point was a little harsh, I felt. If Jack waited until halftime the young man would have saved some face. (Or maybe I’m just too sensitive to be an intercounty manager.) You would hope that O’Brien will get another chance to prove himself sooner rather than later because he’s a real prospect. In defence, Tom O’Sullivan was parachuted in at centre back and to be honest I’m not sure the role really suits him. We all know he does his best work going forward and I think Kerry need a centre back who will sit in and put out fires. That’s just not O’Sullivan’s strong suit and I would like to see him reverting to his normal position with Tadhg Morley (or Paul Murphy if Morley isn’t ready) coming back in at 6. Graham O’Sullivan is deserving of special praise. I thought the all-action corner back was Kerry’s best player on the night. His all-round contribution was excellent but the way he converted that mark near the end was especially admirable. I can’t imagine he practices that specific routine very often so to execute under that kind of pressure required nerves of steel. Looking ahead to Monaghan on Sunday, we will more than likely see a couple of changes because, even at this early stage, the result is important. Jack won’t want to be welcoming Mayo to Tralee in Round 3 with zero points on the board. In those terms, a win in Clones is imperative. If they can get that victory with the help of the some of the guys who found the going tough last weekend, all the better.

OPEN GOAL: Conor Geaney of Kerry scores his side's first goal against Derry. Photo: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.

Kerry must stop passing the parcel | By Eamonn Fitzgerald A huge crowd turned up for Kerry v Derry under lights at Austin Stack Park and the atmosphere was terrific. Getting in early and surrounded by a huge Derry band of supporters gladdened one's heart. Their mood was celebratory as both teams went through the prematch warm-up. Then the game started. I counted 19 Kerry passes, mostly close and handpassed. No Derry player touched the ball. I stopped counting when two minutes appeared on the electronic scoreboard, and it continued until the inevitable happened. Derry turned the ball over near their own endline and swept upfield. I am fully cognisant of the fact that all games evolve and that is what one expects, so I am not transfixed on the game of a half-century ago. 19 passes were frustrating enough, but their directions were infuriating. It was back and over ad nauseum, rarely going forward and too often

backwards. After going into cul de sacs the ball was tip-tapped out and certainly all the way back again. A kicked pass travels much faster than a hand pass and even a quasi-Holy Mary skyscraper into Seán O’Shea would have reaped dividends. He’s a big boy and good fetcher who was ideally placed to use the mark and get a certain point. I am not advocating an all-out kicking game; handpassing has its merits (on some occasions) but make every post a winner and not this pass-the-parcel game so much loved by children. Compare that with the recent Kerry ladies games at Parnell Park and at the Fitzgerald Stadium. Certainly both teams in the Park used the handpass. The big difference to the men’s game was that when the ladies passed it was rarely back passing and, in all cases, there was a player coming off the shoulder driving forward. Recall Micheál O’Hehir’s great phrase: “…and it is the Kerryman sending a long relieving kick turning defence into attack”. No player is going to score from

his own half and 99% won’t score from the acutest angle in the corners. Significantly, Kerry moved the ball smartly in the second half into the John Mitchels end and two goals were scored. Why? Because the Kerry players moved the ball quickly. Dylan Casey scored one goal and Conor Geaney had the vision to see the Derry keeper AWOL. More about that trend by too many modern goalkeepers who dice with death, forgetting the Number 1 priority for a goalkeeper. Certainly, there are occasions for a goalkeeper to move outfield, but not into the opposing half of the field and would you believe it inside the opposition's 45 on a few occasions as we saw at Tralee. Legend has it that the Roman emperor Nero fiddled while Rome was burning in the great fire of 64 CE. Geaney was spot on to snatch the opportunity and moving forward kicked quickly and smartly into an open goal. The two goals were somewhat fortuitous but Godsends, which left Kerry in prime position to nail the

winner and close out the game. But five goal chances with two scored is not good enough. Derry had a strong team starting and the great fortunes of Conor Glass continued. Scorer of the winning goal in the All-Ireland club final for Watty Grahams An Gleann, the Maghera man scored the opening point in Tralee to set the tone for Derry’s win. On the way home on Sunday he popped the question to 25-year-old Neeve O’Donnell at the luxurious Adare Manor. A sparkling event by Glass. Fact becomes stranger than fiction. Good luck to the betrothed pair. I hope that by Easter time Kerry will have improved midfielders established, some scoring forwards and dare I say but the Fossa brothers back after their overdue rest. David and the smaller but older brother captain Paudie will be back in full flow, hopefully avoiding injuries. Clones is a tough venue at the best of times and especially now following Monaghan’s win in Croke Park. At worst Kerry could be pointless after the three opening games and facing relegation. Possible, but one must be hopeful as Kerry rebuild and reenergise in 2024. Survive in the league. Get the winning combination. Minimise the pass the parcel game and maximise the direct scoring to regain Sam. This is not simple and matter-of-fact, but doable. Sam needs to relocate to the sunny southwest. Bring back the Cliffords for Round 3. Needs be. Who would go hunting leaving the top dog(s) at home?

Super sub Louise bails Kerry out | By Eamonn Fitzgerald Two wins out of two in consecutive weekends is more than Tralee’s Darragh Long and Declan Quill could have envisaged. That wonderful away win at Parnell Park against the All-Ireland champions Dublin was a huge bonus to kickstart their campaign and they followed up with a home win in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last. A 2-11 to 2-5 victory might seem like a bit of a stroll in the park, but it wasn’t anything of the sort until they sprung Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh from standby with a quarter of an hour to go. At that point, the Kerry ship was still taking in water as it had been from the start with Waterford to the fore after that 40-second shock goal. Waterford took the game to Kerry from the outset and that goal in the very first minute which gave them the impetus to run Kerry ragged and still stay dominant by half-time. Even with the strong gale behind them, Kerry found it hard to score. Glenflesk’s Emma Dineen, Laoch na hImeartha in the Dublin game, got no free change from Eve Power. Amy Harrington and Lorraine Scanlon had their hands full at midfield against the strong running Emma Murray and Kellyann Hogan. Kayleigh Cronin and Ciara Murphy - good to see her back - did well, but the ball kept coming back into the Kerry half of the field. Stand side, the Kerry management needed to do something to get momentum going. They did this during the sos. The introduction of the experienced Rathmore forward Danielle O’Leary was a boost, but it was the 2023 Footballer of the Year who turned the tide.

Not only did the Corca Dhuibhne star bail out the water that was threatening to sink Kerry, she bailed them out of court once more with a blistering 1-4 in the last nine minutes to seal a valuable win. Class told, even on this windswept Sunday in Killarney. Five shots at the posts into the teeth of the wind at the Dalton’s Avenue End and the fully stretched tricolour over the scoreboard did not faze her. Four points from frees and a player of lesser resolve may well have dropped them short. But straight as a dye over the black spot, low into the breeze, the safe option as any high ball would most likely have swirled wide. The piece de resistance came later. She had shipped a heavy tackle on the terrace side but recovered and reincarnated Mikey Sheehy v Paddy Cullen. Her angle was tight, but she spotted Evelyn O’Brien the Waterford keeper concentrating on the left side of her goal line. That was all she needed and duly lobbed the ball perfectly into the unguarded right-hand side of the Waterford's keeper goal. The veteran brightened the hearts of the good-sized Kerry support. It has been a great start for the Kerry ladies. If you haven’t seen this Kerry ladies' team, go to see them as they progress through the league. With the majority of their games at home, they are a good bet to retain their Division 1 league title. The big aim is to win the 2024 championship and gain revenge for the defeat in 2023 to the mighty Dubs. The next match against Cork on Monday in Tralee will be well worth a visit, but Kerry will need to get off the starting blocks early to defeat the Rebels.

The game itself will be a unique chance for fans of soccer and Gaelic games in the county to come together for a good cause. With many Kerry based legends of both soccer and GAA signed up for the game, it is sure to be an unmissable night in Mounthawk Park, with kick-off scheduled for 7pm. SPORT NOTES

Killarney Athletic U12C SHIELD: Killarney Athletic 1 Killarney Celtic 0. The lads travelled to Celtic for a keenly contested cup game. In windy conditions some great football was played and having created a number of chances and eventually taking the lead, man of the match Derry Sheahan made some fantastic saves to allow us to see out the game. Thanks to Celtic for hosting us and for a very sporty and competitive game.

This was a game of 2 halves for the girls today, Ballingarry team was tall strong and physical team who pressed the girls for the first half and held 85% possession in our half of the field!! But with all that possession failed to break the MEK girls down, second half was MEKs time to press and send in some high balls and press Ballingarry, after about 15 minutes Izzy Lyons scored the first from a free kick from Ava Harty, and that's when all the MEK Galaxy girls starting to turn the game around and press and press until a great team effort to play the ball to Izzy who again scored minutes before the final whistle hard earned by all

the team and everyone played there part from backs to forwards. POM Izzy Lyons, Goals Izzy Lyon 2. BOYS: MEK U15 Division 2: Park FC 2 v MEK Galaxy 4 (Half-time 2-2). A competitive game in Tralee with goals from Cade Jameson and Sean Clifford in the firsthalf after MEK leaked two goals in two minutes late in the half. Kerry Schoolboys/Girls League RESULT: U14 All-Ireland Quarter-Final Shield - Kerry 3-2 Midlands League. The KSBGL U14 Boys’ participation in the SFAI Inter-League All Ireland Shield came to a disappointing conclusion after a 3-2 home defeat to Midlands Red yesterday. Kerry made a disjointed and timid start, playing into blustery winds in Killarney. Conceding twice to an opposition that looked likely to put the contest to bed well before halftime, the Kerry starting eleven dug deep to stay in the game and then to shift the momentum. Improvements in composure, movement without the ball and control of possession were noticeable as the half wore on. Adam Griffin (Castleisland) and Jimmy McGann (Inter Kenmare) were prominent in Kerry’s revival. Donnacha Vaughan (Killarney Celtic) halved the deficit before halftime and Lúc MacGearailt (Dingle Bay Rovers) brought Kerry level immediately after the break. The contrast in how Kerry went about their business at the start of each half was very stark. With a completely different intensity and urgency, the unchanged home starting eleven were now forcing their opponents towards their own goal and playing almost entirely in the Midlands half. Like the weather, the game settled, Kerry dominating possession and territory looking to carve out chances in the final third and Midlands sitting deep looking to attack space behind them. Kerry had a warning midway through the second period when a lack of cover in midfield allowed a 1 v1 counterattack from Midlands that they were fortunate not to concede from. Their luck ran out with ten minutes remaining when Midlands again took advantage of Kerry’s over eager positioning and punished the home side with a superb finish. Kerry regrouped, continued to play well and fashioned a superb chance of their own that went agonisingly wide in the final min-

utes. Despite plenty of positives across the entirety of the game, the Kerry squad and coaches are left to work on making sure mentality and attitude is consistent from first to final whistle in each game until the end of a hugely important season.

Fossa GAA AGM: It was a weekend of AGMs and the following officers were elected: Board na nÓg, Chairperson; Siobhan Kissane, Secretary; Maria Vaughan. Ladies Board, Chairman; Peter O'Shaughnessy, Secretary; Karen McGlynn. Senior Board, Chairman; Pat Sheehan, Vice Chairman; Dermot Clifford, Secretary; Merry Talbot, Treasurer; Donald O'Sullivan, Assistant Treasurer; Peter Kelliher, Registrar; Amy Moriarty, Pro; John O'Neill, Field Committee; Michael O'Shea. Dermot Griffin was elected vice president of the club. Dermot was raised in Barleymount and played underage with Spa, winning U-16 East Kerry C'ship with them in 1969. He returned to play with Fossa's first minor team in 1970 and captained the minor team in '71 and two years later he played with our 1st senior team that won Div 4 of the county league. He was secretary of Fossa in 1976 and again in 1978 and 1979 while still playing and was chairman in 1983/84. He was chairman again in 1995 /96 which was a significant period for our club as preparation work was being done for our grounds in Gortroe. Dermot had formally proposed that we purchase the 11 acres from the Health Board in 1993 and fittingly was on hand to sign off on it in 1995. He was our East Kerry delegate from 1976 through 1980 and again in 1994 and became Chairman of East Kerry in 2008 until 2012. In that time he developed the East Kerry All Stars which is still hugely popular in the district. Dermot is now back as an important part of our executive, always giving sound advice. MICK SPILLANE was given the honour of being elected President of Fossa GAA Club. Raised in Lackabane, with no football in Fossa at the time, Mick joined Dr Crokes at 16 and won two minor titles. He

then went on to play senior with them, winning nine O'Donoghue Cup medals including six in a row from 1957/62 and two more in 1964/65 and his last in 1968. He played in various positions during this time, at corner back, corner forward, full back and even in goals! Mick worked and lived in Mallow in 1966/67 where he played with Mallow and the divisional side, Avondhu who reached the Cork County Championship semifinal in 1966. Incidentally, Dr Crokes failed to win the O'Donoghue cup while he was away! An all-round athlete, Mick was also very active in athletics and has a County Hurling C'ship medal within Killarney in 1969. With the seeds sown for the formation of our club it was Mick and Gene Moriarty who went to Fr Browne to call the first meeting, on the 11th January 1970. It was Mick who rang the County Board Chairman, Gerald McKenna for direction and advice on the formation of the club. Mick went on to play full back on the first senior Fossa team in 1973. Mick was elected as a Vice President of the club in 2005 as a tribute to his great football ability, his involvement in the formative years, his support of the many fundraisers done over the years but most of all, for his unwavering support and positive attitude for all the club has strived to achieve since it began.

SPORT NOTES SENIOR TEAM RECRUITMENT: Following on from several years of great work at underage level, Killarney Camogie Club are hoping to field a team at senior level for the first time. Fielding an adult team would be a massive step for the club. We are based in Spa but draw players from all over East Kerry. Our coaches have done a lot of work over the past 10 years or so and we now have over 100 underage players on our books. It’s pretty vibrant at the moment. We have coaches and committee members from all over the country – Limerick, Cork, Tipperary, Clare, Westmeath, Dublin – which is great to see. The club currently have 7 players on the Kerry minor panel and last year 7 Killarney players played with the county when they won their All-Ireland. These intercounty players are likely to form the backbone of the proposed senior team, but the club are actively seeking more players to join their ranks. We are hoping that there are some adult players in the Killarney or East Kerry area who might like to get involved. Any prospective players who are interested in joining the club as we aim to make history are encouraged to contact Eimear on 087-6481736 or Caroline on 0868452197. U18 BOYS IMPRESS: An absolutely cracking display by our U18 boys against Midleton at Aghadoe last Saturday afternoon in blustery condition, where our lads ran out winners (29-5) with tries by Brian Walsh (2), Mark Kennelly, Shane O’Sullivan and Gearoid Sugrue and 2 conversions by Brian Walsh. The second try by Walsh deserves special mention, you would see the likes of it at Thomond Park or the Aviva Stadium. Starting with an excellent turnover in our 22, some deft passing and then Walsh comes into his own. A kick, chase, kick, and chase again, ball pops up and a cracker of a try in the corner. Then he nails the conversion. It's easy to say it but what a try! Very well done to the players and coaches. Thanks again to all who helped with the hospitality.
