Up to 70 asylum seekers to be housed in hotel in Muckross Road

Two Killarney councillors have hit out against an International Protection Accommodation Services decision to house more international protection seekers in another local hotel. It was proposed this week that 70 asylum seekers are to take up residence in Harmony Inn trading as Kingscourt Inn on the Muckross Road. The councillors feel that it will have a negative effect on Killarney’s core tourism business and that have raised concerns that the move will impact already struggling services. “Our services are maxed to capacity and these decisions are having a huge effect on our tourism offering and the social fabric of our amazing town. This view is a realists view as there are loads of small cafes, bars and tourism-related retail really struggling,” said Councillor Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan. His fellow council colleague, Martin Grady, is concerned that not enough is being done to help homeless people in Kerry. He said: “Killarney is already accommodating many refugees from all over the globe. Yet we haven’t one homeless

bed. People in Killarney and the greater South Kerry area are left with no other option but to pack up, pull children from school and head for hostels in Tralee. Killarney needs homeless accommodation, this should be the priority first and foremost.” The Department of Integration informing them of the news says the housing on the Muckross Road will be for male applicants seeking international protection. Residents will be accommodated across 22 rooms in the premises. The Department of Integration did not say when the people will arrive. Over 7,200 international protection applicants have sought refuge in Ireland this year up to September 12 while 70,840 Ukrainian refugees have been provided with accommodation by the State since Russia invaded that country in February last year.

Macroom bypass to fully open on Monday One of the country’s most eagerly anticipated road projects - Macroom Bypass – is due to fully open on Monday. The final section of the Macroom bypass between Ballyvourney and Ballymakeera is all but complete and can expect to see its first traffic on Monday morning. Traffic will now by-pass the villages of Ballyvourney and Ballymakerra shortening the distance between Cork city and Killarney. The project has been completed ahead of its 2024 schedule. Cork County Council signed contracts with two Irish firms, Jons Civil Engineering Ltd and John Cradock Ltd, in November 2019 for a total budget of €280 million, in what was the largest single investment by government in the region at the time. Work started in January 2020 with up to

260 construction staff employed on site at the peak of the project and continuing throughout the Covid pandemic. In December 2020, seven precast concrete bridge beams, the longest ever for Ireland and the UK at 49.9 metres in length, made their way to Macroom with the assistance of a Garda escort over 4 nights. With only 200mm height to spare traveling through the Jack Lynch Tunnel, one of the biggest challenges was reversing the 155 tonne beams into position with only inches to spare at the existing stone arch “New Bridge” in Macroom. The new section of road consists of two lanes in each direction separated by a steel median barrier. A total of 48 principal structures were built including three river bridges, three overbridges and four under bridges, walls, culverts and environmental barriers for noise reduction and 132,000 square metres of pavement.

Carmella's Burritos: Lunchtime revolution Killarney's lunchtime scene has undergone a significant transformation thanks to Carmella’s Burritos, a game-changing eatery that offers fast, delectable, and easily manageable burritos.

Bernie Burke, Leen Qasim, Sean McCarthy and Kevin Leane opened Carmella's Burritos on Beech Road in Killarney recently.

Founded by local entrepreneurs Sean McCarthy, Kevin Leane, and Leen Qasim on Beech Road, this establishment has quickly become a local sensation, filling a void in the town's lunchtime scene. Before, if you felt the need for a burrito you might have to travel as far as Cork or Limerick, but now you can enjoy fast and easy to handle meals locally. Carmella’s Burritos sources all its produce locally, ensuring freshness and quality. Sean, a long time gym owner and fitness

enthusiast, alongside Kevin, an experienced chef, are particular about what they serve, guaranteeing that the food meets their own high standards. The restaurant uses meats from Cronin’s Butchers and fresh vegetables from O’Sheas Fruit & Veg, emphasizing their commitment to quality. The process of crafting your burrito is not only fast but also incredibly customizable, allowing customers to choose their preferred ingredients. Not only burritos though, the menu includes soups, hotdogs, tea, and coffee. The seating upstairs provides a relaxing atmosphere for patrons to enjoy their meals in. Carmella’s Burritos is fast becoming go-to spot for lunch, offering a hassle-free experience with a friendly atmosphere.

Killarney’s first underground bar with plenty of surprises in store A unique new bar has just opened beneath the well-trodden streets of Killarney. Pig’s Lane on College Street, is the town’s first underground drinks spot offering hand-crafted cocktails designed by a world champion mixologist; sustainably selected natural, regenerative and vegan wines; locally sourced snacks and small plates; a whiskey parlour; and live music from both well-known and up-and-coming artists. Making its opening debut earlier this month, the subterranean venue has been developed by the innovative and sustainably-minded family-run team behind the award-winning Café du Parc, The Tan Yard and O’Donoghue Public House – the O’Donoghue Ring Collection. Pig’s Lane is a nod to the former name of the original site on which the new bar now stands. In the early 1900’s, Pig’s Lane ran from College Street through Railway Road. Enter through the striking, lamp-lit arched doorway and descend the dramatic tiled staircase reminiscent of underground railways of old, into the beautifully crafted subterranean bar. Designed with quality, provenance and

creativity in mind, every element of the new venue – from the reclaimed décor to the delicious drinks and dishes – adds another layer of enjoyment and intrigue to any evening. Behind the scenes, drinks aficionado Ariel Sanecki, the newly appointed Drinks Development Manager for the O’Donoghue Ring Collection, has poured his years of experience competing in (and winning) cocktail competitions across the world into creating a meticulously crafted cocktail menu. A veritable showcase of the

best Irish spirits and liquor is accompanied by locally sourced, seasonal fruit and herb garnishes and signature homemade syrups. Groups of four or more can gather around gorgeous antiquated punch bowls and feel immersed in the time-honoured art of sipping and sharing libations containing local spirits, cold brew herbal teas and refreshing hints of fruit. Meanwhile, a unique wine list has been lovingly curated from a selection of natural, biodynamic, and sustainable varieties

specifically sourced from small producers committed to nurturing the environment through every drop they create. Wines from Romania, Crete, Czech Republic, and Lebanon, promise to take wine enthusiasts on a journey beyond traditional terroirs and contribute towards a wine list that is working towards reducing C02 emissions and a greener future. Uncover the hidden whiskey parlour – a distiller’s den lined with more than 120 rare quality bottles sourced from the best producers and collectors internationally. Whilst the finest Scotch, Japanese and Bourbon bottles have their place, the focus is on premium Irish whiskeys with plenty of exclusive and rare releases to be discovered. Newly appointed Group Development Chef Janice Casey Brackens has used her passion for provenance to create a menu of snacks and small plates combining the freshest of ingredients sourced from local and Irish suppliers, along with the group’s innovative Killarney Urban Farm located right next door. These tempting sidekicks provide the perfect accompaniment to any drinks order. Music moves with the mood with a diverse mix of genres to suit all tastes. The eclectic and versatile house playlist sets an ambient tone as you sip, savour and mingle with friends, whilst well-known artists, bands and DJ’s are bringing their live acts underground for some intimate performances. Open seven days a week from 5pm, Pig’s Lane has arrived just in time to provide a one-of-a-kind hideaway for the darker months ahead.

Sheahan's Pharmacy celebrates platinum anniversary Family-run Sheahan's Pharmacy on Main Street celebrated 70 years in business with an open day and coffee morning in aid of the Kerry Hospice on Friday.

Coffee Cup project wins national award

The landmark pharmacy was opened by the late legendary GAA and Horse racing supporter Donie Sheahan in October 1953. For the past 70 years, it has provided the people of the town with all of their pharmaceutical needs, caring for their health and wellbeing in the process. “My grandad Donal, who was known as Donie, was the first generation of the family to found the pharmacy business in Killarney,” says William, who is the latest

of the Sheahan’s to run the business. “He moved from Listowel to Killarney in order to take up a job as the Pharmacist at the District and Saint Columbanus’s Community Hospitals where he then met my grandmother Carmel (née Dowling) and the rest as they say is history. “They lived over the pharmacy for many years where both he and Carmel operated the pharmacy business. “Simpler times but many called it a South Doc before it’s time. People would knock on their door in the middle of the night or on a Sunday and Donie always looked after them. My Dad Liam continued this tradition having worked with Donie for many years by offering exceptional care to both locals and tourist alike.”

The Killarney Park and The Ross has been named the Overall Winner at the Pakman Awards 2023 for its outstanding work helping Ireland increase its waste recycling rates. The community-led Coffee Cup Project was also awarded the Environmental Education and Awareness Initiative Award The Killarney Park and The Ross set up the grassroots Killarney Coffee Cup Project with the goal of eliminating single use coffee cups from Killarney town centre. This initiative has resulted in the elimination of almost 70,000 cups. This project endeavours to change behaviours and perceptions towards single use items and strives to promote a beneficial transition to a circular economy. The initiative was also nominated for the Community Recycling Initiative Award and the Innovation in Waste Resource Products or Services Award. Repak’s Pakman Awards are held annually and celebrate Ireland’s recycling and waste management champions who lead the way in their commitments to sustainability and the environment. Winning a Pakman Award is one of the highest accolades an organisation, company, community group or individual can receive for their environmental and waste management efforts. The 2023 Pakman awards, which took place on Thursday night at The Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin, saw representatives from leading businesses and community groups come together to recognise excellence in recycling and waste management. All category winners on the night were automatically put forward for the Overall Pakman Award. Another highlight from this year’s awards saw three charities and community or-

ganisations, Naas Lions Club, Laura Lynn Foundation, and Dublin Simon Community receive a €1,000 donation each. Charities were nominated by attendees and pulled from a charity draw on the night. Speaking at the 2023 Pakman Awards, Séamus Clancy, CEO of Repak said: “We are delighted to celebrate an extraordinary group of environmental champions at the ninth annual Pakman Awards this evening. Each year, we continue to be inspired by the phenomenal efforts of those making a positive impact in waste management and mitigation procedures. Now, more than ever, it is important to champion sustainability, and tonight, our winners have truly shown us that the future is bright. This year saw some of the highest quality entries we’ve ever had from companies, businesses, community groups and individuals, reflecting their commitment to help reach our future EU recycling targets and protect our planet for future generations. The standard of this year’s entries was not only exceptional but serves as inspiration for others in how to deliver exemplary environmental practices. I would like to thank our sponsors, congratulate all the winners and finalists and extend a special congratulations to The Killarney Park and The Ross, the winner of the 2023 Overall Pakman Award.”

Gleneagle Squash season launched Gleneagle Squash Club have announced their 2023/2024 squash competition and training programme, following extensive renovations and improvements during the summer months. Club competitions are set to take place each month during the squash season, from November until April, and all players are welcome to join. The first monthly competition of the season is kindly sponsored again by O'Keeffe's Oils Rathmore. The club has been making great progress with six members now trained as coaches to World Squash Federation Level 1 accreditation; success in national competitions; representation on Irish teams; ladies and junior training and improved facilities which now bring the courts up to a national standard. Club chairman and longtime player Mike Crowley gives credit to the Aquila Club staff and the Gleneagle Hotel for their ongoing support and also extends his thanks to the Department of Community and Rural Development and Kerry County Council for the Community Enhancement Fund award towards the cost of upgrading the courts. There has been a strong turnout to Ladies’ training each Tuesday evening and Juniors’ Training each Wednesday

evening from 6.15-7.00pm, with the first cohort of ladies already actively playing in club leagues and making way for the next round of beginners and returning players. Their ‘drop in and play’ mornings each Saturday from 10am 1pm are a chance for new, returning and regular players to train and play without commitment each week. With the welcome news this week that squash is to be an Olympic sport for the first time at LA 2028, the club is as proud as ever of its successes - Donnagh Crowley and Paul O’Brien are proudly representing the club on the Irish international master’s team and in 2023, the club won Division 2 of the Munster Leagues. The club also held the Killarney Open in September, sponsored by Tricel, Torc Engineering and Brendan Counihan Plant Hire. With recent improvements and wins, the club can be more confident of having a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of its community and perhaps, developing a potential Olympian from the Gleneagle Squash Club!

Oak Tree regeneration continues in National Park

Last year National Park and Wildlife Service Outdoor staff in Killarney National Park collected over 30,000 acorns from registered collection areas of local provenance with Killarney National Park, mainly the ancient Oak and Yew woodlands of Derrycunnihy and Muckross Peninsula. The woodlands are said to have the most

extensive and oldest areas of native woodlands in Ireland and Northern Europe. The Outdoor Staff painstakingly sowed 31,375 acorns to be exact, mainly Sessile Oak, under the supervision of Horticulturalist Gerry Murphy and Gardener Stephen Moore, following successful germination in Springtime and then placed on outdoor benches in Summer.

He will partner former Grand Prix drivers David Kennedy and Tommy Byrne in a POB Motorsport run car, alongside newly crowned Siltex Safety Zetec champion Michael Barrable and his sons Peter and Rob, who have won this event twice before. “Yes, you read that right, the famous actor and sometime race driver is travelling to Ireland this weekend to drive a Siltex Safety Ford Fiesta Zetec against a horde of club and international racers,” reported the website Motorsport.ie this week. The Hollywood A-lister has been racing in the European Le Mans series for the last four seasons. His last Irish appearance at the wheel of

a competition car was during the 2019 Rally of the Lakes when he drove a Ford Escort Mk2. Over 100 drivers making up 21 teams will take to the grid at Mondello Park on Sunday at midday, with the winner taking the chequered flag at 6pm- in the dark. Community College hosts spooktacular Halloween story writing competition Killarney Community College recently played host to a spellbinding Halloween Short Story Writing Competition in partnership with several local primary schools. The event, part of KCC’s commitment to literacy and community engagement, provided a platform for budding young authors to showcase their creativity and storytelling talents in a thrilling and spooky fashion. Killarney Community College teamed up with St Oliver’s, Holy Cross Mercy, Presentation Monastery and Firies National school again this year to host the Halloween competition. This year’s students were invited to submit a short story with the theme of Halloween. The Halloween short story competition is becoming an annual event that encourages emerging young writers to showcase their creativity and writing skills. Under the guidance of dedicated teachers and mentors, 5th class students crafted eerie, suspenseful tales that captured the essence of Halloween and transported readers to worlds of mystery and wonder. The English Department stated “We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated teachers from the local primary schools, whose support and mentor-

ship played a pivotal role in nurturing the writing talents of the students.” A distinguished panel of judges, comprised of KCC’s English teachers had the daunting task of selecting the winners from the multitude of entries. Their criteria encompassed not only exceptional storytelling but also originality, creativity, and the ability to evoke the spirit of Halloween through the written word. Kilcummin and Kenmare to gain from Uisce Éireann investment Uisce Éireann’s investment in Ireland’s wastewater infrastructure is benefiting communities around the country by supporting sustainable growth and development, enhancing water quality and protecting the environment. The latest EPA Urban Wastewater Treatment Report published today, shows the progress being made in tackling long-running issues like raw sewage discharges, while also underlining the need for continued investment in our essential wastewater services.

INVESTMENT

2022 saw the highest annual investment in wastewater to date as Uisce Éireann continues to make progress in priority areas such as locations where there is raw sewage entering the rivers, lakes and the sea, and sites identified by the European Court of Justice under the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive. The building, repair and upgrading of Ireland’s wastewater treatment plants

and sewer network will require a multi-billion euro investment programme over many years. Uisce Éireann is focussed on delivering the best possible service improvements, while maximising return on investment.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT

28 areas around the country are benefiting today from cleaner waters and enhanced amenities due to the construction of new wastewater treatment plants where none existed previously. There are currently 11 more locations under construction. This means that over 70% of all raw sewage discharges nationwide have now been eliminated, with the majority of the remainder set to end by 2025. Uisce Éireann is also driving sustained improvement in existing wastewater treatment standards. Last year 91% of Ireland’s treatment plants were fully compliant with the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive. For those plants that are not currently achieving compliance, Uisce Éireann has a plan of action to address any deficiencies and bring them up to the appropriate standard as quickly as possible.

KERRY PROJECTS

In Kerry, there are two significant wastewater projects underway in Kilcummin and Kenmare. In Kenmare, Uisce Éireann is investing €25 million in upgrading the treatment plant. When complete, this project will improve water quality in the River Finnihy and increase capacity at the plant and enable long-term social and economic development of Kenmare. Our project in Kilcummin will accommodate future population growth and enhance the local environment. It will ensure compliance with wastewater discharge regulations, improve water quality in the River Deenagh and Lough Leane, and protect recreational waters for swimming, fishing, boating and sightseeing. Projects under the Small Towns and Villages Growth Programme are also planned in Fenit and Knightstown. These projects will be progressed through the current and future investment cycles, subject to approval and planning.

ESSENTIAL INFRASTRUCTURE

Brian Sheehan, Uisce Éireann’s Head of Infrastructure Delivery, noted that: Ending raw sewage discharges and improving wastewater treatment for communities

across the country are priorities for Uisce Éireann. We are making huge strides in addressing these issues and we are now seeing real and tangible benefits from the unprecedented level of investment in this essential infrastructure. To date over 70% of raw sewage discharges nationwide have been eliminated and we are on track to end the majority by 2025. Our targeted programme of investment in existing wastewater plants and networks is also helping to protect the environment and enhance water quality. “The timely delivery of this infrastructure and these services is a critical component in supporting sustainable social and economic development. Last year we invested over €1bn in water and wastewater projects, and we will need to maintain this level of funding in the years to come. It will also be necessary to address existing issues in our planning and approvals system so that large scale critical infrastructure can progress within a reasonable timeframe. We will continue to work with Government and our regulators, including the EPA and CRU, to ensure we can rise to the challenge of delivering transformative wastewater services to enable communities to thrive.”

Garda resignations proof of mismanagement of Justice system

Pay nurses and stop emigration – Cahill The cost of paying a 10% pay increase to the nurses in our hospitals could be funded from the large sums that are paid to agencies to recruit nurses from abroad, according to Kerry Fianna Fáil County Councillor, Michael Cahill. Councillor Cahill states that large numbers of our nurses are emigrating in search of better pay and conditions. He is seeking details of payments made to Recruitment Agencies to bring nurses from abroad in replacement, from the Health Service Executive (HSE). “Instead of giving our overworked nurses a pay rise, as befits the long hours they work in intense Hospital conditions, the

Health Service Executive (HSE) pay out large sums to Agencies to recruit nurses from abroad. This makes no sense to me financially or otherwise” stated the Rossbeigh based Councillor. “Most of us have first-hand experience of the difficult circumstances that our nurses work through on a daily basis, having been a patient or from visiting a loved one in their care. It must indeed be a vocation to take on such a demanding role as a nurse and no one can deny that they deserve to be given decent pay and conditions,” said Councillor Cahill. “Rearing our children to seek better pay in Australia or the USA is not what any of us planned for,” added Councillor Cahill.

Approval confirmed for 61 new social homes in Milltown Minister for Education and Kerry T.D Norma Foley has received confirmation that approval in principle has been given for the purchase of 61 new homes in Kerry for social housing. The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has granted approval in principle to Kerry County Council for a turnkey development of 61 social homes at Springfield Drive, Ballyyoughtragh North, Milltown. The homes are a mix of three and four beds. Minister Foley said: “I would like to thank my Cabinet colleague Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien for confirming that approval in principle has been awarded for this significant acquisition of 61 new homes for social housing in Kerry. “Housing is a key priority for Government and these much needed social housing

Minister for Education and Kerry T.D Norma Foley.

units will help provide homes for those in Kerry that might need them most. “I would also like to thank Kerry County Council for their ongoing hard work during these challenging times and their commitment to providing housing to all local communities across the county.”

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice, Pa Daly TD, has said that record Garda resignations and missed recruitment targets are symptomatic of Fine Gael’s mismanagement of the Justice system for over a decade. Deputy Daly made his remarks following today’s Oireachtas Joint Committee engagement with Garda representatives. The committee heard from the Garda Representative Association, the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, the Restaurant Association of Ireland and Retired Garda Sergeant Mr Anthony Gallagher. Teachta Daly said: “The issues raised in relation to recruitment and retention by speakers are of no great surprise given recent developments. They included pay, conditions and the new rosters. Morale within rank and file Garda members is low and the historic resignations and missed recruitment targets are symptomatic of that. “The regulations for the Garda Reserve should be published as soon as possible following consultation and the govern-

ment must look to establish a task force on retention and solve the ongoing issues within recruitment. “There was clear frustration regarding the lack of engagement by the Department of An Taoiseach in the A Policing Service for the Future process, as well as regarding implementation of the Commission for the Future of Policing recommendations. “The witnesses were also clear about the challenges faced in relation to anti-social behaviour in and around major cities, including the centralisation of drug services within city centres. Declining Garda numbers have left resources extremely stretched in these locations and a visible lack of Garda patrols have left businesses, residents and visitors worried about assaults and thefts. “These are all long standing issues, stemming from Fine Gael’s mismanagement of the Justice system for over a decade now. It is clear from today’s meeting that change is badly needed from the Government.”

Kilcummin “Spooky Sprint” Family Fun Run

The return of the Family Fun Run, the “Spooky Sprint” to Kilcummin was greeted by a crowd in excess of 300 people This fundraising event, which endured a short break due to Covid, was held in Kilcummin last Sunday to much acclaim. The participants came in all shapes & sizes, young and old and everything in between and an array of Halloween costumes were on display by all in attendance. The 4.5km route was festooned with spooky ghosts, wicked witch, a werewolf and ghouls, just to remind all that it was indeed, the “Spooky Sprint”. “We were delighted with such a big turn out and everyone enjoyed their day” said Joanne O Sullivan, Chairperson of Kilcummin Parents Association who organised the event. Once the hard work was completed, all returned to Kilcummin Recreational Hall for much needed refreshments and of course the now traditional array of confectionary items that would put any bak-

ery to shame. Once everyone was refuelled, the Halloween party games began in earnest. The best carved & decorated Pumpkin as well as the best dressed competitions were officiated with winners announced and celebrated. And then, it was eyes down as the substantial raffle with fantastic spot prizes and guess the number of spooky eyes was held with much anticipation! Ann Marie O Leary from the parents association of Kilcummin National School stated “a lot of work and effort went into organising the day by a dedicated team of people and we want to extend a big thank you to everyone involved and to everyone who supported the day”. The funds raised on the day will be utilised to support Kilcummin National School and Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club.

AMO Digital founder James Crothall with new recruit Eoghan Canty

Local IT company AMO Digital expands team AMO Digital, based in the Killar Killarney Innovation Centre, was established in 2020 by James Crothall in response to the growing demand for businesses to utilise cutting edge methods of evaluating online performance in order to generate more business from their websites. “One of the outputs of the pandemic was the shift businesses had to make to ensure they had some form of online presence. Now, a lot of business owners come to us because they don’t actually understand how their website is performing. For example, how many sales are being generated or how many enquiries are made. That’s where we come in. To help use data to support decision making, ultimately with a view to generating more business,” said Crothall. Eoghan Canty has now joined the AMO team, having graduated with a first class honours degree in Interactive Digital Media from Limerick Institute of Technology and brings a wealth of new expertise to

the company. The expansion of the team will allow AMO Digital to offer an even wider range of services and provide clients with some of the most advanced web analytics tools available. “Now Eoghan has joined us it means not only more advanced web analytics and Search Engine Optimisation reporting, but also greater client engagement. And of course being able to show our clients if they’re making a positive return on their marketing spend, which is obviously extremely important for any business,” added Crothall. Killarney Innovation Centre manager, Conor O’ Leary said: “The role of the Killarney Innovation Centre is to assist its clients in their development and growth. AMO Digital is one example of how the Centre interacts with its clients to support their expansion and impact positively on employment in We are delighted to see Eoghan joining the team and the growth of AMO.”

Salut Coolick National School Recently the staff of Coolick had a lightbulb moment in which they asked the following question: ‘Since children at Coolick learn Irish as their second language from the time they set foot in Junior Infants, wouldn’t it be interesting to see if they could simultaneously take baby steps in a third language?’

And so the plan was hatched and suggested to the parents of the junior classes and they were all fully supportive of the idea. The school approached a local teacher, Miriam O’Sullivan Long and asked if she would be willing to take on the challenge. The proposed structure of the course was a weekly lesson of 30 mins for each class

from Junior Infants to second class. As a ‘taster’ for the classes involved, a sixweek programme was deemed appropriate for the age-group with the possibility of a further course of six lessons later in the year. An active learning approach is what is required for children of this age and so with a mixture of imitation, a little drama, a few French songs, and rhymes, and lots of pictures and videos, these young linguists are taking to their third language with gusto. They can now introduce themselves, meet and greet, order something in a café or shop, count to 10, name body parts, identify colours and sing several songs in French.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Scrap Daylight Savings – MEP Seán Kelly The EU and Ireland should scrap the bi-annual time change known as Daylights Savings Time (DST) or at least shorten 'winter time' by delaying the time change until November and starting 'spring time' a month earlier - in February, Seán Kelly MEP has said ahead of this weekend's switch of the clocks. "I have been campaigning to end the practice of ending DST since being elected an MEP. We nearly had an EU-wide agreement secured before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, but Member States failed to take action. I understand that Ireland, unfortunately did not push for the end of DST. There is some concern that because the UK is out of the EU, we could end up with two time zones on the island of Ireland. That is nonsensical and would not happen in my view. It stands to reason that if the EU brings in this change, most other European countries neighbouring the bloc would follow suit. The EU has the power to enact this change", Kelly said. "In the very early hours of this Sunday morning, the clocks will 'fall back' an hour, officially starting winter time. The

time change has a very negative impact on people's health and wellbeing as studies have shown. It also has a very worrying effect on road traffic accidents too", Kelly warned. "If I am re-elected as an MEP, I will commit to pushing for the end of DST. The EU could also seriously examine alternatives such as reducing the timeframe. For example, why not push the "fall back" from the end of October to the end of November? The 'spring forward' clock change could be on February 1st, instead of waiting for the clock to jump forward in late March", Kelly suggested. The Ireland South MEP pointed out that morning light or dawn is particularly important in enabling the human circadian system to adjust internal time to the external dawn/dusk cycle and seriously impacts overall health and mental well-being. "When we disrupt our natural rhythms, many people lose sleep leading to weakened immunity, increased anxiety and depression in some cases. It also means people are driving tired or less alert and are less able to concentrate leading to more accidents and a lower quality work performance", he added.

Matthew Perry dies at 54 Matthew Perry, who entertained a generation with his performance as sarcastic and lovable Chandler Bing on the US sitcom ‘Friends’, was found dead in his hot tub at his Los Angeles home last Saturday night. ‘Friends’ was a phenomenon, winning multiple Emmys and achieving record ratings. After 10 seasons, the 2004 finale reached more than 52 million viewers in the US, making it the most watched TV episode of the 2000s. Perry also appeared on Ally McBeal and received Primetime Emmy Award nom-

inations for his performances in The West Wing and The Ron Clark Story, also landing leading roles in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Fools Rush In. Perry also co-developed and starred in a revival of the ‘The Odd Couple’ portraying Oscar Madison. Perry was open about his struggles with addiction, writing in his memoir ‘Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible’. Through his recovery he became an advocate for rehabilitation and spokesperson for the National Association of Drug Court Professionals. In 2013, he received the

Champion of Recovery Award from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. Perry’s ‘Friends’ co-stars, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer issued a joint statement paying tribute, “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew,” the five actors said. “We were more than just castmates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”

Wild Atlantic Way makes National Geographic Traveller’s ‘Cool List 2024’ National Geographic Traveller (UK) has unveiled its ‘Cool List 2024’ – the 30 most exciting destinations to visit in 2024 – and the Wild Atlantic Way and Belfast feature on the list. Welcoming the news, Alice Mansergh, Tourism Ireland’s Chief Executive Designate, said: “I’m really delighted that the Wild Atlantic Way and Belfast have been included in National Geographic Traveller’s ‘Cool List 2024’. 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of the Wild Atlantic Way. Of course, the heritage and scenery of the Wild Atlantic Way span

millennia but it’s certainly nice to take a moment to celebrate this iconic route, which came together into one 10 years ago next year. This is what National Geographic Traveller said about the Wild Atlantic Way: “Winding for 1,600 miles along the rugged west coast, the Wild Atlantic Way has become one of Europe’s most exciting road trips, not least because it ticks off some of Ireland’s most memorable experiences … It’s celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2024, and a string of new experiences along its route means there’s more to enjoy than ever.”

SpaceX to help Europe launch navigation satellites in 2024 SpaceX is partnering with the Euro European Space Agency (ESA) to launch up to four satellites next year. The upcoming missions will mark the first time that SpaceX launches EU satellites carrying classified equipment and the first time in 15 years that Galileo space spacecraft will launch from a non-European territory. As the US and China accelerate space ex exploration, Europe is struggling to achieve

its ambitions in the space sector, especially after ending cooperation with Russia in February 2022. All Galileo satellites orbiting Earth were launched aboard Europe’s Ariane 5 rocket, now retired. Galileo, which currently consist of 23 operational satellites, is Europe’s equivalent of the US’ Global Positioning System (GPS), — an orbiting network that allows users to know exactly where they are in real time.

Mass UK lawsuit against Apple This week Apple lost a bid to block a mass London lawsuit worth up to €1.9 billion which accuses the tech giant of hiding defective batteries in millions of iPhones. The lawsuit was brought by Justin Gut Gutmann on behalf of around 24 million iP iPhone users in the UK. Gutmann’s legal team argued that Apple concealed issues with batteries in certain iphone models by "throttling" them with software updates and installed a power

management tool which limited performance. Apple, however, said the lawsuit was "baseless" and strongly denied batteries in iPhones were defective, apart from in a small number of iPhone 6s models for which it offered free battery replacements. An Apple spokesperson said: "We have never – and would never – do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades."

Irish Serial Killer Documentary A new RTÉ television documentary series The Nobody Zone – Interview with an Irish Serial Killer explores the twilight world of Kieran Kelly, an Irish serial killer living in London. Blending documentary and drama with a unique twist, this two-part television series tells the story of a killer on the edges of society building on the award-winning podcast series The Nobody Zone. Starting Monday November 6 at 9.35pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player, this true crime series brings to life the extraordinary original audio from Kieran Kelly’s confession to UK police in 1983. Kelly was arrested in London in 1983 for the relatively minor theft of a wedding ring. During his interview with police, he confessed to a series of brutal mur-

ders going back 30 years. On tape, Kelly recounts his crimes with spine-chilling candour and convinces the police that they are in the presence of Ireland and perhaps Britain’s most prolific and dangerous killer. However, questions remain about the real purpose behind Kelly’s willing confession to the police. Recalling the interview, retired Detective Superintendent with London Metropolitan Police Ian Brown tells the documentary: “Kelly showed his animal cunning I suppose, the fact that he was playing us at times, and he laughs and eventually agrees with you, but he’s had his five minutes of fun with you.” The documentary team had exclusive access to 120 minutes of the UK police audio interview with Kieran Kelly that forms

the basis of the key drama element of this production. Actor Ned Dennehy plays Kelly in a dramatisation of his extraordinary confession. Using Kieran Kelly’s own voice, Ned lip-synchs his performance, bringing to life this incredible scene of a serial killer describing his crimes. In addition to this dramatised confession, the documentary series had access to an expert team of investigators and documentary makers who have accumulated over eight years of research on the life and exploits of serial killer Kieran Kelly. The contributors to the documentary also include a builder who employed Kelly as a casual labourer over several years, unaware of his murderous activity but wary of his explosive temper and a forensic psychologist has studied the audio

tapes to explore the motivation behind Kelly’s crimes and to find clues to his personality and character. Robert Mulhern, author of The Secret Serial Killer: The True Story of Kieran Kelly was also interviewed for the programme.

Pale-faced, blood thirsty vampires in dark cloaks roamed the silent hallways from early morning with wicked witches busily preparing their brutal brew while mischievous goblins got up to no good as they waited for the parading children to file through the doors. The frightening freak show lasted for four long and terrifying hours and the enormous effort the children and their families made for the big event was mind-blowing. There was real cause to be afraid – very afraid – when the parade got underway but fear turned to delight at the finish when some super prizes were given away. The best dressed boy was Raymond Oliver Maguire, on holiday in Killarney for the weekend, and he went home with a fabulous four-foot pool table while the

best dressed girl, 14-month-old Peyton Lad-Gupta, who lives in Killarney, won an amazing modern wooden kitchen. The best dressed family prize of a visit to meet Santa at this year’s Christmas in Killarney Festival, as well as a family lunch, went to cousins Cathal O’Sullivan from Rathmore and Killian Moynihan from Knocknagree. All the others that took part in the spooky season parade, with ghosts and monsters in abundance, received goody bags to ensure that everybody went home happy after a fantastic day out. In addition to the parade, there were spellbinding magic shows, Halloween face painting sessions, a candle making workshop, free balloon modelling, free bouncy castles and a children’s disco laid on by the team at Killarney Outlet Centre.

A new book titled ‘Fungi of Killarney National Park’ in Killarney was launched earlier this week. Researched and produced by Louis O’Toole and published by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the book is the most comprehensive inventory of fungi recorded in Killarney National Park, documenting almost 500 species of fungi through photographs and text. Éamonn Meskell, Divisional Manager,

NPWS, Killarney National Park said: “Louis’s book is of enormous importance to Killarney National Park and to Ireland. There are now more records of fungi from areas of woodlands and this portrays the unique and important ecological diversity that exists in the Park.”

A proud moment for Claire Tangney, as her mushroom she discovered 'Entoloma Caeruleum' features in the book. Photos: Valerie O'Sullivan

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS CAO Applications Requirements if open on November 6 Notification Getting Married in Ireland CAO applications for 2024 open on November 6 at 12 noon for all applicants, including school leavers, those applying as from colleges of Further Education, mature applicants and those applying from outside of Ireland.

The Central Applications Office (CAO) processes applications for over 1,750 courses in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) all over Ireland so there is plenty of choice and lots of time to research courses of interest. The normal closing date for application is February the 1st at 5pm but late applications are accepted up to May 1st. The Change of Mind facility opens on May the 5th which allows applicants to amend course choices. This facility closes on July the 1st at 5pm and no further changes can be made after that deadline. Familiarise yourself with the CAO website and handbook The CAO website has lots of really helpful resources for applicants and parents so it is a good idea to take some time to become familiar with them early in the process. They include video guides on all aspects of the application, a guide to the points system, a course search facility, information about restrictions, a list of Open Days in the HEIs, and a comprehensive FAQ section. For anyone who may be eligible for Access Routes linked to the CAO, there is detailed information on the HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) and the DARE (Disability Access Route to Education) There are also links to information on options outside of CAO such as Further Education & Training and Apprenticeships. You can download a pdf version of the CAO Handbook which gives comprehensive information on all the key dates and deadlines, how the application process works for all applicants and what happens at the Offer Stages. A facility to personalise the CAO Handbook is really useful as you keep track of the courses of real interest.

20 COURSE CHOICES

You will have the option to include up to 20 course choices on your CAO application on two different lists - 10 at level 8 (Honours Degree) and 10 at levels 7/6 (Ordinary Degree/ Higher Diploma).

Anyone planning to get married in Ireland must give a minimum of three months’ notice to the Registrar at a Civil Registration Service. This is the law in Ireland and it applies to all civil, religious and secular marriages. This is sometimes referred to as notification of your intention to marry. If everything is in order, the Registrar will give you a Marriage Registration Form (MRF). The MRF is like a marriage licence. It gives you authorisation or permission to get married. Niamh Dwyer is a Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore and a member of Kerry Branch of IGC. See www.mycareerplan.ie or follow @mycareerplan on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

The majority of level 7/6 courses have progression routes onto level 8. The HEI websites provide detailed information about all courses including entry requirements, module details, placement and study abroad opportunities as well as career options. Researching all this detail will help you to make an informed decision about what courses will suit you. To register applicants simply log on to www.cao.ie and click ‘Apply’. The cost is €30 up to January the 20th which is the deadline for the discounted application fee, after which it will cost €45 up to February the 1 at 5pm. When you register you are asked to create a password to keep your CAO account secure. Once this is done you will then use the ‘My Application’ tab to access your account using your CAO number, date of birth and password. You will be able to go in and out of your account freely to make whatever changes you want up to February 1, and again once the Change of Mind facility opens up to the final deadline on July 1. There is no need to panic as you have lots of time to do course research, but my advice is the start the process early. It gets you focused on your career research, helps with goal setting and it will take the pressure off later when you are finalising your decision about course choices, in what is a very busy year!

How do I give notice of my intention to marry? You will need to do the following: • Contact your local Civil Registration Service to get a postal marriage notification form. Once you have completed the form, you can return it by post or by email. • Contact the Civil Registration Service to make a marriage notification appointment with the Registrar. You can also book a marriage notification appointment online for certain areas of the country. When you make the appointment with the Registrar, you will be told what information and documents to bring with you. The requirement to give 3 months’ notice does not apply to civil partners whose civil partnership was registered in Ireland. What documents will I need to bring? Generally, you and your intended spouse will each need to bring the original (or certified copy) and a colour photocopy of your: Passport as identification • Birth certificate • Final divorce decrees in respect of all previous divorces if divorced - if it was

a foreign divorce contact the Registrar for instruction • Dissolution decrees in respect of all previous civil partnerships if you have a civil partnership dissolution • Final decree of nullity and a letter from the relevant court confirming that no appeal was lodged, if you were in a civil partnership or marriage that was annulled by an Irish court • Deceased spouse's death certificate and your civil marriage certificate if either of you is widowed • Deceased civil partner's death certificate and your civil partnership certificate if either of you is widowed • Documentary evidence of immigration status if not a citizen of Ireland or an EU member state You will also have to provide information about the intended marriage, such as: • Whether it will be a civil, secular or religious ceremony • The intended date and location of the marriage • Details of the proposed solemniser of the marriage • The names and dates of birth of the two proposed witnesses • A PPS number is required for all parties serving notice of intention to marry, who have or will have a current or a future address within the State You will need to download and complete the Data Capture Form, which is available on-line. You should bring the completed form with you to the appointment. For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860.

Can Mid Kerry break the champions’ hold?

| By Adam Moynihan

East Kerry are still favourites to retain their crown but the gap has closed slightly, writes Adam Moynihan KERRY SFC FINAL

_________________________________________________________________________

East Kerry v Mid Kerry Sunday at 3.30pm Austin Stack Park Live on TG4 This year’s Kerry Senior Football Championsip has been light on intrigue but thankfully we have some nice storylines ahead of the final. Holders East Kerry are aiming for their fourth title in five years. Challengers Mid Kerry are poised to make their big breakthrough after losing two finals to East Kerry in 2020 and 2022. The Cliffords are always box office (Paudie, in particular, has been electric in recent weeks). A number of Mid Kerry players are exhibiting the kind of form that has Jack O’Connor edging forward on his seat. There’s plenty to get stuck into. But all those talking points have been superseded this past week by a much larger question: should Sunday’s finalists even exist? The composition of Kerry’s premiere football competitions has been a thorny issue for many years. Much of the debate has centred around the number of senior clubs in the county. In Kerry, there are eight. In many other counties, there are double that amount. This makes the Kerry Senior Club Championship hyper competitive. Endure one difficult threeweek period and you could well find yourself in a relegation playoff, and all of a sudden you’re one game away from intermediate. Kerins O’Rahillys, club champions in 2022 and All-Ireland Club semi-finalists as recently as ten months ago, found this out for themselves last weekend when they came up short against Na Gaeil in this year’s relegation playoff.

Strand Road will drop down from senior in 2024, joining Tralee rivals and 2021 county champions Austin Stacks in the second tier of Kerry football. This development has emboldened those who say that eight senior clubs isn’t enough. Among them is former Kerry GAA chairman and Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Seán Kelly, who recently stated his belief that divisional teams should be disbanded to make room for more club sides in the senior football championship. “I don't think the need for divisional teams is what it was before,” Kelly told the Irish Examiner. The fact that divisional sides are guaranteed their place in the championship irrespective of performances in previous seasons is also a source of frustration for some. West Kerry giving a walkover to South Kerry in the group stage of this year’s championship did little to assuage club folk on that front. Getting rid of the district teams is a radical proposal and it would undoubtedly be met with serious resistance in many corners of the county, but the appetite does appear to be there for an increase in the number of senior clubs. Whether or not the county board see things the same way, or whether or not they think it’s feasible, remains to be seen. If something does happen, it certainly won’t be happening before the 2023 decider so perhaps it is better to focus on that game for now.

THE CLIFFORDS

East Kerry will come in as favourites after making it to another final with very little fuss. They rested several players, including both Cliffords, for the vast majority of the group phase but still won all three games fairly handily. Relatively comfortable victories over St Kieran’s and Rathmore followed in the knockout phase with their superior firepower up

front invariably the deciding factor. Their average winning margin in this year’s championship is nine points. For the most part, Mid Kerry’s run has been similarly stress-free. Rahillys pushed them close in the final group game but a one-point win plus victories over Spa and Shannon Rangers saw them qualify for the quarters as top seeds. A 12-point win over Na Gaeil followed, and then they gave arguably the performance of the tournament against Dingle in the last four. The Club Champions were expected to give Mid Kerry a really good game but that’s not how it unfolded at Stack Park as Peter O’Sullivan’s team ran out ten-point winners to book their place in the final.

LAST YEAR

Based on the evidence we’ve seen so far, Mid Kerry have improved over the past 12 months - which was certainly necessary following last year’s nine-point

defeat in the final. East Kerry were miles better on the day as the scoreline of 1-16 to 0-10 suggests. Man of the Match David Clifford kicked 1-9 (1-6 from play) in that final and the Kerry captain gave Mid Kerry full back Nathan Breen a torrid time, so it will be interesting to see if the Beaufort man is handed the task again on Sunday. Breen has been one of his team’s better players this season and you would imagine he would be highly motivated to have another go. He barely featured in the group stage but Paudie Clifford has been nothing short of sensational in East Kerry’s last two outings. He is integral to everything they do, the beating heart of the team. It is difficult, bordering on impossible, to keep him completely out of a game but Mid Kerry will need to curb his influence somehow. The wily Pa Kilkenny is an option here. Darragh Roche is East Kerry’s top scorer

55

3.11.2023 and another potential match winner. David Mangan of Laune Rangers might get the nod to track him. The midfield battle could be a cracker as all four centre field players are coming into the final in decent form. For Mid Kerry, Seán O’Brien has been one of the top performers of the championship and his partner Gavin Horan has been moving well too. Kieran Murphy has been excellent for East Kerry and Ronan Buckley is an important player capable of tipping the scales in his team’s favour. We might see O’Brien v Buckley, which would be an intriguing match-up. We all know that East Kerry are blessed with forwards but Mid Kerry have plenty about them in their own forward division. Keith Evans and Cillian Burke are high-activity footballers that can trouble any defence, and the crafty Éanna O’Connor often dictates play, especially down the stretch when game management is of critical importance. Evans is fast and fit so whoever picks him up will need to be able to match him in

those departments, while Burke’s physicality means that someone with size is the best option. The experienced Jack Sherwood may be tasked with following the talented goal-getter from the centre back position.

THREAT

From a tactical standpoint, Mid Kerry will naturally need to be wary of East Kerry’s attacking threat so you can expect them to sit in – as all teams do – and try to frustrate the defending champions. The problem when you play East Kerry is that they don’t really need to be fluid to pick up scores. When you have kickers like the Cliffords, Roche and Donal O’Sullivan, points will come one way or another. The ideal scenario for Mid Kerry is that they manage to start fast and get their noses in front. This will give them something to hold on to and put East Kerry in a position that they rarely find themselves: one where they’re chasing the game. The underdogs have the footballers and the speed to counter-attack

and cause damage, and East Kerry are not perfect at the back, so there will be opportunities for them to score. Their shooting efficiency needs to be really good, especially if they get goal chances, because you can nearly be certain that their opponents will take their opportunities at other end. Getting that lead will be so important because East Kerry are deadly when they start to get rolling, when they get three or four or five points ahead. That forces the opposition to be more expansive and when East Kerry get the ball back in those situations, it spells trouble. With Paudie Clifford invariably in the driving seat, they break fast with pinpoint passing through the lines, and when those inside forwards get 1 v 1 in fast break situations, there’s no stopping them.

PROGRESS

Mid Kerry have made impressive progress and you might even go so far as to say that by this stage they have built a more cohesive all-round team unit than East Kerry. That probably seems like a

strange thing to say about East Kerry, a team on the brink of their fourth championship in five years, but they have so much talent they can get away with free-wheeling at times. It’s not that they can simply ignore tactics and formations but when you have the calibre of forwards they have, sometimes tactics go out the window. Mid Kerry are looking like a well-oiled machine and this is without question their best chance yet to get over the line. But it’s just impossible to overlook East Kerry’s superior talent, especially given how well the two most talented players – Paudie and David Clifford – have been moving this year. Add to that their strength in depth and the experience this group has when it comes to winning these finals and it’s almost impossible to write them off. For the sake of the competition you would be hoping for a close game, but East Kerry still appear to hold most of the aces. Verdict: East Kerry by three.

GOLD: Johnny Hayes winning the Olympic Marathon in London. Drawing by Robert Edgren.

Why did they add 385 yards to the marathon? | By Eamonn Fitzgerald 385 yards is a very short distance for runners but when you add it on to 26 miles it seemed like an eternity to the vast majority of those who completed the Dublin City Marathon on Bank Holiday Monday. Blame King Edward VII who put his foot down when he realised that at the 1908 Olympic marathon, the finishing line was 386 yards short of the viewing stand of the Royal Box. Not for the first time, especially in Irish history, royalty dictated the length of the race without any consideration for the athletes who had battled it out over 26 miles. The London marathon in the 1908 Olympic Games became the first marathon extended to 26 miles and 385 yards. It has remained to this day. However, the indefatigable spirit of the Irish rose to the challenge when Johnny Hayes won the gold medal in that marathon. There is a Killarney connection and the story of Johnny Hayes is worth telling. His parents were from Nenagh and they

emigrated to the USA where their son, Johnny, joined the Irish American AC. He progressed steadily in the longer races, which brought him to London for the 1908 games. He is remembered for three things in particular. Firstly, he was the first man to win a marathon at the now official standard distance of 26 miles 385 yards. Secondly, he was not first over the line in London 1908, coming in behind the Italian Dorado Petri, the hot favourite. Runners at that time knew nothing of the dangers of dehydration. Petri ‘hit the wall’. He wobbled off in the wrong direction, but British officials assisted him. Jack Andrews, the chief British official, grabbed him and carried him across the line, 30 seconds ahead of Hayes, but was disqualified. Pocket rocket Johnny Hayes, a mere 5 feet 4 inches in height and weighing just 125 pounds, was declared the winner. Thirdly, back in Killarney some entrepreneurs got the bright idea to invite the gold medallist to come to the town on his way home from London to help raise

funds for the Cathedral spire. In the early 1840s, Bishop Egan and Lord Kenmare were the prime movers in building St Mary’s Cathedral, which had been designed by Pugin in the Gothic style as we know it today. The building was stalled during the Famine years, especially the years 1847-1842. Work recommenced in 1853 and it was consecrated in 1855, but it lacked the spire so prominent in photographs. In 1908 the building of the spire commenced, but where was the money to come from? Killarney is known worldwide to have people with vision and determination to progress. Why not invite Johnny Hayes to visit Killarney and have the sports star head up a fundraiser for the planned spire? Spectators were delighted to pay in to see the wonder boy and Johnny delivered. He ran in a race in the Demesne, not a marathon, but a long-distance race nevertheless. The Cathedral was completed, spire and all, in 1912 and it remained thus until the 1970s when Bishop Eamonn

Casey spearheaded internal renovations to facilitate the new liturgies. Move on to 1962, when Johnny Hayes’ daughter brought him back to Killarney for a holiday, staying in the Great Southern Hotel. No fanfare, but some locals who were keen promoters of athletics in Killarney went to visit him and welcome him back. These included Dr Eamonn O’Sullivan, trainer of the Kerry teams for eight All-Irelands, a man who was equally passionate about athletics. His father was the legendary JP O’Sullivan. Also, there was Tadhg Crowley from the shop where Fairview Hotel now stands, Martin Cleary (father of Órna of Killarney Musical, and Fergal), Seán Russell (Headmaster of the Killarney VS), and Maurice Francis O’Leary (Kerryman journalist). Tom Looney, then a young seminarian working on a summer job at Denis Moriarty Photographic Shop, New Street realised the significance of the return of the gold medallist. He photographed the special moment on the steps of the GSH. The next time you are in Nenagh take time to view the three statues honouring Olympic champions with links to Nenagh: Matt McGrath, Johnny Hayes and Bob Tindall. The statues were unveiled in front of the Nenagh Courthouse in 2002. The one sad element to the wonderful Johnny Hayes story is that when he returned to Killarney, he had no memory whatsoever of winning the gold medal or of running in the town. Amnesia is a dreadful affliction.

East Kerry fancied to retain the Bishop Will East Kerry retain the Bishop Moynihan Cup at the 2023 Kerry SFC final at Austin Stack Park on Sunday?

| By Eamonn Fitzgerald They did the needful through the different rounds of the current championship even without the services of Rathmore and Spa who competed as club participants this year. Even without these clubs, East Kerry can call on a powerful squad. Just look at the full forward line of David Clifford, Darragh Roche and Donal O’Sullivan, all wearers of the Kerry geansaí. Mid Kerry are no slouches either and after an understandable uncertain start the team has got great momentum, showing that particularly in the semi-final when they hit Dingle, the current club champions, for three goals in a runaway 10-point win. Fortunately for Dingle, they have the Munster and maybe the All-Ireland Club series to look forward to. Is the latter a step too far? We will be following their progress in the weeks ahead. Mid Kerry have plenty of motivation to gain revenge for last year’s defeat to East Kerry. To add further spice to the occasion, Milltown/Castlemaine and Fossa will meet in the intermediate final. The winners of that contest will go senior next year and also represent Kerry in the Munster and possibly All-Ireland IFC series. I was particularly impressed by the tough tackling and tight defence of Mid Kerry, who placed the handcuffs so brilliantly on the goal threats from the Geaneys - and all within the rules, one should add. Seán Coffey is a very reliable keeper and Nathan Breen has excelled. Will he be able to curb (at best) the influence of David Clifford and succeed where every other player in the country has failed? The Clifford brothers are crucial for East

Kerry, but they have so many other fine established players to call on. In the modern game it usually takes 20 players to fashion victory and East Kerry have a much stronger bench than Mid Kerry. The latter can call on Daire Cleary and Jack O’Connor who scored 1-2 and 1-0 respectively when they came on as versus Dingle. Then there is Éanna O’Connor, son of Jack, the Kerry trainer, a very reliable place kicker. I think he will need to pop over six points from frees to match the East Kerry scoring machine. Former Kerry goalkeeper and All-Ireland winner Brian Kelly is a key player for the holders. The Legion man has a proven record in placing and adapting his kickouts for his defence to retain prime possession, avoiding going long. Mid Kerry’s midfield of Seán O’Brien and Gavin Horan can edge this contest and provide the scoring opportunities for the in-form Cillian Burke. Jack O’Connor will be watching him carefully for a call up next January. I have pointed out in this column the necessity for Kerry to discover two new key players: a midfielder and a naturally scoring forward. That alone will provide the secret for success in the bid to regain Sam from the Dubs in 2024. There isn’t an awful lot wrong with the 2023 Kerry team, but over reliance on David Clifford and a mediocre midfield have been the Achilles heels. Are these players there? Sunday is the ideal day to shine and win the hearts of the Kerry selectors and the suffering Kerry supporters still agonising over the one that got away last July. I don’t expect a big crowd at Sunday’s county final, maybe 7,500. I expect Mid Kerry to give it a right shot but still stand by East Kerry to succeed once more.

Doireann wins gold at Fittest School event | By Eamonn Fitzgerald Doireann Dwyer, a transition year student in St Brigid’s Secondary School, won first place in the individual contest for girls at the inaugural Kerry Post-Primary Fittest School event held in Tralee last week. The 16-year-old held off stiff opposition from Mercy Mounthawk students Laura Falvey (2nd) and Lily May O'Gara (3rd). The individual boys winner was Con Mahony (Castleisland Community College). Mercy Mounthawk won the team award just ahead of the St Brigid's/St Brendan's

College team of Doireann Dwyer, Kate Forde, Gearóid O’Connor and Kevin Looney. It capped a wonderful week for Doireann who came on as a sub for the East Kerry team that defeated St Kieran’s in the Kerry U17 football final at Fitzgerald Stadium. Doireann loves all sports especially basketball, football and swimming. She plays her club football with Kilcummin LGFA as well as schools football and basketball with St Brigid’s. Well done to all the contestants. Can we expect to see the Dwyer family from Kilcummin featuring in Ireland’s Fittest Family in 2024, following on from the splendid performance of the O’Reidy

WINNERS: Gavin Crowley, All-Ireland winner with Kerry, presenting awards to Doireann Dwyer and Con Mahony.

family from Kerry in the first phase of the 2023 show, which was screened on RTÉ on Sunday last? The choice of manager is unenviable. How about Olympian Gillian O’Sullivan,

or Killarney Valley’s splendid sprinter Sarah Leahy, or All-Star Kayleigh Cronin, or Mary Jo Curran, winner of nine All-Irelands with Kerry? Or even the maestro himself, David Clifford?

McGrath pens two-year pro deal with Kerry FC

CONTRACT: Seán McGrath has committed his medium-term future to Kerry FC. Photo: Brendan Moran/ Sportsfile.

Kerry Football Club have announced that Seán McGrath has signed a long-term contract with the club, which will see him stay in the Kingdom until the end of the 2025 season. McGrath (21) came back to his home county of Kerry to play League of Ireland football, signing for the league newcomers last January. The Ballyduff man was Kerry FC’s second signing and has since become a regular feature in Billy Dennehy’s match-day squad. In fact, he featured in all 38 games in the 2023 campaign, which included 34 starts and four introductions from the bench. McGrath had plenty of experience at this level prior to signing for the Kingdom. Having graduated from underage academies in both Limerick FC and Cork City, he made his senior LOI debut campaign with Cobh Ramblers in the SSE Airtricity First Division in 2022, playing 27 matches for the Rams. McGrath ended his first season with the Kingdom with four goals

to his name from the attacking midfield position. “I’m delighted to have signed a professional contract with Kerry FC and to be committed to the club,” McGrath said. “I’m delighted to be here and I’ve really enjoyed the last year so I can’t wait to be back next season and continue to represent this club. It’s clear to see the club is going in the right direction and has great plans in place and I feel there’s no better place for me to be.” Also speaking following the signing, first team Manager Billy Dennehy said he is pleased that McGrath “sees Kerry Football Club as the place to be for his football over the coming years”. “Seán, coming back to Kerry as a young player who came through the Kerry leagues and made the step up to League of Ireland level at other clubs, was a great story and now to have him committed for two more seasons is fantastic. He has grown week on week and as the season progressed Seán became one of our strongest performers. He has a great attitude in training and has a great approach to the game. “I’m excited to work with him in the coming years and hopefully give him everything he needs to keep improving and pushing on with his development as a player. Again for us at Kerry FC, it’s what we’re all about; rewarding young players for their performances and giving them an opportunity to continue developing and improving at his level. “I’ve no doubt Seán will improve massively over the next couple of years with all the hard work he puts in.”

Local teams in National Cup action Scotts Lakers host SETU Carlow at the Killarney Sport and Leisure Centre in the first round of the National Cup on Saturday. The game begins at 7.30pm. The Lakers were defeated 86-98 by SETU Waterford Vikings in the league last weekend so they will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways against Carlow, who beat them on opening night up in Carlow. The visitors will come to Kerry in good spirits having picked up four wins from their five games in the league, their sole reverse coming against the Limerick Celtics. Michael Wallace is one of the

top scorers in the league, Lawrence Puff Summers is an ageless wonder and in Jack Kehoe they possess one of the best young players in the country. Having said all that the Lakers can live with anyone when in form so a thrilling cup tie is in the offing. Meanwhile, the St Paul’s women’s team will be trying to carry their excellent league momentum into the cup when they take on the McEvoy Cavan Eagles at the Virginia Sports Centre. It’s about as tough a draw as anyone can get in the National Cup and Paul’s will recall an absolute belter of a game played there last February. Tip-off on Saturday is at 3pm.

HOME: Scotts Lakers players and management team are looking forward to a home cup tie at Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre.

U12 PREMIER RESULT: Killarney Celtic 2-2 Killarney Athletic. Sean Quill/Rory Moynihan. The Athletic U12 As had a tough away match at Celtic today. The boys played a strong first half and could have been ahead a couple times with great play by Sean Quill. They went down 1-0 to a fine Celtic goal just before halftime. In the second half Celtic started strong and went ahead 2-0 with a well finished goal. With their backs to the wall the Athletic boys fought hard and were back in the game with a strong precise finish by captain Sean Quill. With time dwindling away Rory Moynihan stepped up with a spectacular top corner free kick from 30 yards out with five minutes left to tie the game to make it 2-2. The boys put everything on the line and defended well to earn a hard-fought draw. Ewan Marshall was strong and confident in net to save Athletic on a couple occasions. Captain Sean Quill lead the line well for Athletic and showed his leadership qualities to earn a deserving man of the match performance for Athletic. Well done lads proud of all the boys today. Thanks to Celtic for a sporting match. U12B BOYS DIVISION 1: Ballyhar Dynamos A 4 Killarney Athletic B 0. The U12B Boys came up against a well drilled Ballyhar A team on Saturday morning away from home. A penalty was conceded early on which was superbly saved initially however Ballyhar were first to react to score the rebound. Despite conceding a second shortly after, Athletic contested strongly and were unlucky not to score in the first half. Ballyhar grew in confidence in the second half, adding to the scoresheet twice. Disappointment in the end for Athletic but plenty of learnings and positives to take away for the long season ahead.

Killarney Legion GAA O’DONOGHUE CUP: The East Kerry board have published their timetable for the commencement and running of the blue riband O’Donoghue Cup. Currow will host Glenflesk on Sunday November 12th while our Senior Men will be at home to Listry on Saturday November 18th. On the same date Dr Crokes will face the winner of Currow and Glenflesk in the quarter finals. On Saturday November 25th Spa and Gneeveguilla will meet, a day later Kilcummin will be the venue for Kilcummin vs Rathmore. The stage will then be set for the other three-quarter finals to be played. The semifinals are fixed for the weekend of the 9th/10th December while the final is set for the following weekend. U16 GIRLS: Our U16 ladies team finished up their season on Sunday morning by winning an East Kerry Division 2 title when they beat MKL Gaels in Direen.

On a lovely, sunny morning, both teams started brightly, and a ding dong battle commenced. Legion led at half time on a score of 4-04 to 3-04. Short a number of regulars for varying reasons, they didn’t let it take its toll as they continued to take the game to MKL. To the oppositions credit, they battled hard throughout and put in a stellar effort. This comes as no surprise as both teams played out a County League final earlier in the season where MKL came out on top. Today, though, it was Legions turn. Valiant defending, strong running and well taken scores paved the way for a hard-earned win. Final score Legion 4-09 MKL 3-06. Thanks to MKL for another great sporting game of football and to John Purcell for officiating. EAST KERRY: Best of luck to our representatives involved with the East Kerry team that will play Mid Kerry in the Senior County Championship Final this Sunday at 3.30 in Austin Stack Park. Brian Kelly, Cian Gammell, Darragh Lyne, Eoghan O’Sullivan, Finbarr Murphy, Rob Leen and William Shine are all part of Jerry O’Sullivan’s panel. U11 BOYS: The final day of football for our U11 Boys in 2023 was taking part in the John Lynch Memorial tournament today in Austin Stacks. We had two teams competing against St. Finbarr’s of cork, Ardfert, and Listowel in the group stages, and the boys were excellent in all games, which meant we played John Mitchels in the afternoon. Again, our boys were excellent again and really improved the more football they played. Our 2 team captains on the day Robbie Fennelly and Andrew O’Sullivan lead both team from the front and set the tempo for their team mates to follow and that they did with distinction .Huge thanks on the day to all the parents and coaches Eamonn Maguire, Kieran O’Shea , Donal O’Donoghue, and John Keane .Massive thanks to our hosts, Austin Stacks, and especially the Lynch family, who yet again provided a great tournament , great pitches , good weather, and superb fun for all the kids from all over Ireland.

Referee: Jonathan Griffin (Glenbeigh/Glencar). Congratulations to the Milltown/Castlemaine Minor team and management who advanced to the Mid Kerry Final on Saturday afternoon following a nail-biting two-point victory over near neighbours Keel/Listry at the Paddy Burke Memorial Park in Milltown in challenging underfoot conditions for both sides due to the recent inclement weather. Milltown/Castlemaine carried

a four-point lead into half time as two all-important first half goals from Dara Hogan and Eoghan Corbett gave them a 2-04 to 0-06 advantage. The only other scorer during the half for the hosts was Gearóid Quirke as he put over a lovely point off his left from play. Keel/Listry battled back in the second half and as the game approached the closing stages the visitors levelled the contest at 0-14 to 2-08. Milltown/Castlemaine's six second half points all came from the boot of Dara Hogan and with three minutes of injury time added on by referee Jonathan Griffin it was to Hogan that the home side once again turned to and he delivered by landing two superb scores from distance to propel his side to a two-point victory and taking his own personal tally for the day to a hugely impressive 1-8. A great result by the lads who were three points down at one stage of the match. They have now taken victories against Beaufort, Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane and Keel/Listry in this seasons Mid Kerry Championship. Milltown/Castlemaine will now meet Laune Rangers in the Mid Kerry Minor Football Championship Final with date, time and venue to be confirmed.

Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club PAUL O’SULLIVAN SCRATCH CUP: A great day for father and son on the Bank Holiday Monday last as Gearoid (Intermediate) and Nathan (Junior A) Cronin claimed two of the Claret Jugs on offer at the County Board event which the club hosted. Well done to our other prizewinners in the event Adam Kelly (Intermediate Back 18), Paddy Murphy (Junior A Back 18) and Jason O'Connor (Junior B Runner-Up). We were delighted to welcome both the County Board and the players on the day and immense credit must go to all those who answered the call at short notice to get the course in the magnificent condition it was for this time of year. Thanks to both Shirley and Helena for their hospitality in the kitchen as well. NATIONAL INTER-CLUB COMPETITION: Unfortunately, it was a sixth-place finish for our team of Damien Fleming, John McGrath, Gearoid Cronin, James Fleming, Nathan Cronin and Mark O’Shea in St Bridget’s, Kildare last Saturday as despite a rally in the Singles a poor start cost them overall.
