Mohammed calls for action at Palestine Solidarity Protest Hundreds of people took to the streets of Killarney and Tralee last weekend in a show of solidarity with Palestinians and against the actions of Israel Defence Forces in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. The Gaza Strip has been blockaded and bombarded by Israel since Hamas launched a series of devastating terrorist raids on October 7. In Killarney last weekend, protesters gathered at the Market Cross with banners and Palestinian flags for a rally. One

of the locals in attendance at the protest was a well-known and respected businessman - Mohammed Saleh, owner of VIP Turkish Barbers. We spoke with Mohammed this week to reflect on the recent events in the Middle-East.

“We do not condone any attacks on civilians on either side but the situation with innocent people in their thousands dying must stop. There must be an immediate ceasefire, the siege on Gaza needs to be lifted and humanitarian aid must be allowed in because if not, this is going to lead to the death of many more Palestinians.” Mohamad is well aware of the Palestinian plight, his parent’s fled from Palestine to Lebanon in 1967, the same year that a conflict known as the “Six-Day War” left Israel in occupation of the Sinai peninsula, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, East Jerusalem and most of the Syrian Golan Heights - it effectively tripled the size of territory under Israel's control and pushed many of the Palestinians out. Born in a Lebanese refugee camp in 1979, Mohammad explains that Palestinians

who had to leave their land could not get citizenship for neighbouring countries, nor were they allowed to return to land that they previously occupied. And so in 2011, Mohammed moved to Ireland to secure a better life for his family. While much of the focus has been on Gaza, Mohammad has a number of relatives living in the West Bank region and he explained that the situation is getting much worse there too. “Many people, including some of my relatives, are being arrested and killed by the Israel Defence Forces every day.” Speaking about the protest last week, Mohammad said that he felt it was important that people understood the truth, “Israel have the support of the U.S which is making the situation worse, we need other countries to condemn these Israel attacks, this is not a war about religion, this is about pushing us out of the land.” Watching events unfold has been difficult for Mohammad but he was keen to thank locals for standing with them. “Ireland and in particular, the people of Kerry have always been supportive of the Palestinian people and we thank them for this solidarity,” he said.

Awareness night planned at the Great Southern Long before recent events, Killarney local Sally MacMonagle was highlighting the hardships of Palestinians living in occupation. She first went to the West Bank in 2019.

Having raised funds she was a part of a team that opened a Gym at the Lajee Community Centre in the Aida Refugee camp in Bethlehem, West Bank. “The Aida Camp is surrounded by the apartheid wall and is known as the most tear-gassed place in the world, done so by Israeli occupation,” Sally explained. She has made the trip back twice in the past five years and has experienced many protests between the young Palestinian boys and the Israeli army. “I have witnessed first-hand the terror and fear that the Israeli army and government try to instil in Palestine. They

make it impossible for the people to have some semblance of normal life. From land grabs, electricity and water stoppages, gassing playgrounds and creches, to humiliating encounters at checkpoints, the fundamental human rights of Palestinians are ignored at every corner.” “I speak with my friends in Palestine daily and today a friend told me he was terrified just walking past the soldiers - who have them surrounded and locked down in all the cities in the West Bank. He was terrified they would just shoot for the fun of it and nothing would happen to the solider; no questions would ever be asked- that he was starting to realise that his life was now seen as worthless by the western world.” Sally is a member of the Palestinian solidarity and educational awareness

group that is organising an information evening in the Great Southern Hotel next week, dedicated to raising awareness about the Palestinians. She is encouraging all locals to come along. The in-person event will take place on Wednesday, November 1, 7pm at The Mangerton Suite in The Great Southern Hotel. The event will give locals an insight into the ongoing situation in Palestine and discuss ways in which we the people of Kerry can support and advocate for the Palestinian people. There will also be a photography exhibition from children in The Aida Refugee camp and Sally MacMonagle, who is an accomplished photographer herself. Tickets are €5 and can be purchased on Ticketmaster.

Local club officials, councillors and TD’s met at the site of the new sports complex in Direen this week to turn the sod and mark the start of an exciting new amenity for the town.

Turning the sod on the new sports complex

The project was given the green light by a special assembly of the Killarney Municipal District during the Summer. The development is on council-owned land situated between the Killarney Celtic soccer club and the Legion GAA club in Direen. Site clearance will begin over the coming days with steel works to commence in the next four to six weeks.

The single-story community hall will house two basketball courts, a versatile multipurpose room, a meeting space, a gym, a Judo room, changing facilities, restrooms, storage areas, and a coffee room. The development also encompasses an outdoor playground, parking spaces, a raised pedestrian crossing, lighting, and sidewalks.

The Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club, St. Paul’s Basketball Club, and Killarney Judo Club will all benefit from access to this building. These three groups have come together to form Direen Sports Centre CLG, which will oversee and operate the sports facility. To finance this venture, the council has secured just under €1 million through the

Community Recognition Fund, and additional funding sources, including road grants and sports capital funding, will be pursued to complete the project. The development is utilising only onethird of the council-owned land at Dirreen, and discussions are underway regarding potential plans for the remainder of the site.

Minister for Education Norma Foley turned the sod on the new sports facility at Direen, Killarney last Friday. Pictured with Minister Foley were from left, Cllr Niall Botty O'Callaghan, Marco Mosca, David Doyle (KCC Senior Engineer), Cllr Niall Kelleher, Paul Sheehan (St. Paul's Basketball Club Chairman), Deputy Pa Daly TD, Cllr Marie Moloney, Sean Kelly MEP, Matthew Farrell (Killarney Municipal District Officer), Braden Bell (Scotts Lakers St. Paul's), Aidan Forde (Killarney Judo Club). Aidan O'Mahony's Inspiring Fundraising Challenge Takes Off Aidan O'Mahony, the esteemed CRY (Cardiac Risk in The Young) Ireland Ambassador and retired GAA player, in collaboration with his close friend Eoin O'Shea, have launched their unique fundraising initiative with CRY Ireland, "Try for CRY", scheduled to run from November 1 to December 14. Instead of embarking on the traditional Camino, Aidan and Eoin are challenging participants to complete a leg of the Camino from the comfort of their own homes. The aim of the challenge is to get people out walking / jogging / running the distance of the Camino (a leg of it),

and more importantly donating to CRY Ireland. The beauty of "Try for CRY" lies in its inclusivity, with an open invitation for everyone to take part. The primary goal is to inspire individuals to step out, whether in their living rooms, gardens, or local parks, and complete a distance equivalent to a Camino leg, all while contributing to CRY Irelands crucial cause. Aidan and Eoin will partake in the 200km challenge, but participants can tailor their challenge by choosing from a variety of distances, including 60k, 100k, 180k, or 200k, accommodating a wide range of fitness levels and preferences. Aidan O’Mahony commented on the

fundraiser: “ ‘Try for CRY’ is all about coming together and challenging ourselves for a cause that's close to our hearts. Even if we can't walk the Camino physically, we can walk it in spirit from our own homes, parks, gyms and that's a powerful way to make a difference. So I encourage everyone to join in and make sure to tag myself and CRY Ireland on social media to follow along on your journeys.”

For those eager to get involved and support this cause, donations can be made directly at https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/AidanOMahony. Your contribution will go a long way in helping CRY Ireland fulfil its mission of protecting young hearts and providing essential support to families in need. New releases starring Jessie and Fassbender out this weekend "Fingernails," a science fiction romantic comedy which stars Jessie Buckley is out on Apple TV + from this Friday 27th October. In this alternate reality, scientists have ingeniously deciphered the definitive means of ascertaining love between two individuals. Ronald McDonald House Charity (RMHC). L to R : Joanne Pretsell RMHC, Caroline Daly, Mike Daly, Sarah Daly, Joe Kenny RMHC.

Lily Daly Foundation raises €35,670

The Lily Daly Foundation’s first fundraising event called “Lily’s Pink Challenge”, which took place on the 16th September last in Killarney, raised €35,670. This enormous amount was raised following the registration fees paid by 432 individuals that took on Lily’s Pink Challenge and also donations made by over 350 individuals and local organisations. Lily’s mom and managing Director of the Lily Daly Foundation, Caroline Daly said “The amazing goodwill, support and generosity shown from almost 800 people from all across Kerry, Ireland and beyond who either completed Lily’s Pink Challenge, volunteered on the day or made generous donations has been truly phenomenal and way beyond our initial expectations and wildest dreams when we set off on this journey. The Lily Daly Foundation is now in a very fortunate position, thanks to the amazing support we received, to give back in a very meaningful way to our two chosen charities and the amazing work they do for sick children and their parents” The Lily Daly Foundation has made a €25,000 donation to the new Ronald McDonald house currently being built at the New National Children’s hospital in Dublin. This specific donation will sponsor a new bedroom within the new Ronald McDonald house, which will be called after Lily Daly. This room will provide accommodation to parents and families while their child is metres away from them in the New National Children’s hospital.

Caroline said “When a child is seriously ill and in hospital it is vital for their parents from outside of Dublin to be able to stay close to their child and not have the worries of trying to find and secure accommodation. This is something we experienced ourselves when Lily was sick and that is why we were keen that the Lily Daly Foundation would give back and make such a specific and significant donation to the new Ronald McDonald House that families can use long into the future. The Lily Daly Foundation also made a donation of €10,670 to the heart centre in Crumlin hospital, to specifically support the development of the Axial INSIGHT project that aims to enable medics and medical device companies develop a system that can generate a 3D personalised model of a child’s own specific heart pre surgery and catheterization. This will enable the consultants within the heart centre to print 3D images of a child’s heart which will assist with decision making on surgery. Speaking on behalf of the Heart centre in Crumlin hospital, Dr Adam James said “We are honoured that after the tough times the Daly family endured in Crumlin, that they were now giving back to future generations. Their strength is amazing given the difficult times they have experienced”.

This revelation upends the very fabric of relationships, as couples now unflinchingly abide by the results of this love test. If the outcome is unfavourable, they part ways. It's a charming premise that serves as a lens to explore how relationships can either wither or evolve with time, all while "Fingernails" weaves in its darkly comedic flair. At the heart of the narrative is Anna (played by Jessie Buckley), a dedicated teacher entangled in a long-term, test-validated romance with her boyfriend, Ryan (portrayed by Jeremy Allen White). Their relationship has reached

a comfortable plateau; the sparks have dulled, yet cozy nights cuddling on the couch while watching documentaries seem far from intolerable. After all, science has assured them of their compatibility. The story takes a twist when Anna lands a new job at The Love Institute, a clandestine establishment that not only administers the fateful love examinations but also provides couples with a curriculum to nurture their connection. For reasons known only to Anna, she conceals her newfound employment from Ryan. In the world of Netflix, Michael Fassbender is stepping into the shoes of a conflicted assassin in the upcoming film, "The Killer." The official character description reveals that Fassbender's portrayal will delve into the mind of an assassin who grapples with a growing conscience, even as his clients persistently demand his lethal expertise. You can catch it on the streaming platform from Sunday 29th October.

Passing of Kerry Way walking trail founder Seán Ó Súilleabháin Seán Ó Súilleabháin’s passing on Wednesday morning has been met with sadness by the people of Kerry, in particular Killorglin, his home town.

Alexis the face of ‘Hotels for Little Heroes’ campagin Children’s Health Foundation are calling on hotels across Co. Kerry to donate a night and change a life by taking part in their ‘Hotels for Little Heroes’ campaign. The campaign asks Irish hotels to donate the cost of a night’s stay to raise vital funds to help give every sick child in Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin, Temple Street, Tallaght, and Connolly the very best chance. Killarney native and patient in Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street, Alexis O’Mahony, teamed up with Children’s Health Foundation Ambassador John Burke from The Armada Hotel to launch this new campaign and urge Irish hotels to help change the lives of sick children who spend time away from home in hospital. Alexis was born with Pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency (PDH), a rare and serious condition that affects her metabolism. This has meant the past few years have been challenging for Alexis and her parents. “Alexis had no energy as a baby, no energy to smile or even cry” said Teresa, Alexis’s mother. “One night I heard a big laugh, I was overjoyed – where was this energy coming from? But it wasn’t a laugh, she was having a fit.” Unfortunately, spending time away from home can be an inevitability for a child when they become sick. There are children, like Alexis, who can spend months at a time in hospital. That is time away from family and friends; away from their

own school, sport and all the things that make a childhood. The Children's Health Ireland frontline teams provide loving, compassionate care every day, but being in hospital can be a lonely and scary place for children. By registering to take part in the campaign, hotels can support children like Alexis as they spend many nights in hospital being looked after by the amazing Children’s Health Ireland staff. Hugh Kane, interim Chief Executive at Children’s Health Foundation said, “Hotels for Little Heroes is a fantastic way for Irish hotels to support sick children in Children’s Health Ireland hospitals and urgent care centres. By donating the cost of a night’s stay in your hotel, you can change the lives of sick children and provide vital, life-saving funds to support the incredible work in Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin, Temple Street, Tallaght and Connolly. We’d like to extend a huge thank you to our wonderful Ambassador John for helping us launch Hotels for Little Heroes and for the Armada Hotel’s support.” To register and find out other ways hotels can get involved, visit www.childrenshealth.ie/hotels-forlittle-heroes/ or email modonnell@childrenshealth.ie

Seán was regarded as one of Ireland’s foremost walking experts. An avid hiker/ walker all his life. He founded the premier long distance waymarked route in Ireland - 'The Kerry Way' in the 1980's thus conserving earlier lines of travel and access to historic sites, and was chair of the voluntary committee that aims to maintain and extend the route. Noel Spillane, CEO, South Kerry Development Partnership remarked - “Seán was a wonderful community stalwart, who gave very generously of his time to SKDP, both as a former board member, member of the SKDP LEADER Evaluation Committee and former chairperson of the RSS/Tus working group. He was great attender and contributor to our meetings and was always prepared to give his time - whether it was chairing sub-structures of SKDP or participating on interview panels.”

Seán was a pioneer and founder of the Kerry Way and his vision and hard work led to the establishment of the Kerry Way. Up until his health permitted he attended our SKDP/Kerry Way Committee Meetings and the organisation always appreciated his very valuable contributions. Noel continued, ”I want to extend our deepest sympathies to Seán’s family and the Kerry Way Committee on behalf of the board, management & staff of South Kerry Development Partnership.” Norman Reidy, Chair of Kerry Way and South Kerry Trails Voluntary Committee said “it is with a heavy heart that we write this post. Seán Ó Súilleabháin our Chair and Founding member of the Kerry Way has sadly passed away on Wednesday. Our thoughts are especially with Marguerite his wife and all his Family, and many friends at this sad time. As we know Seán has left a remarkable and lasting legacy of volunteering and community involvement, in many key projects like the Kerry Way and Kerry Mountain Rescue Team to name but a few. Glowing Colours for National Park ‘Samhain’ Gathering This year's Autumn Gathering where nature and the weather played a leading role, began at dawn on Saturday morning with the ‘Deer Watch’ in Knockreer Estate, presented by well-known Conservation Ranger Padruig ‘Brac’ O’Sullivan. The sun came out for Sunday morning's event and safe to say our native Irish Red Deer didn’t disappoint. The Family FunDays and Nocturnal event through the woodlands saw children come face to face with Vole Banks, Bats, Sika Deer and a few folklore tales of Innisfallen Island. Michéal O’Sullivan’s photography workshop & National Park Shoot proved a great success. The highlight ‘Paudie

O’Leary Lecture’, delivered by Áine Ní Shúilleabháin, Biologist, entitled Paudie - ‘Our Man for All Seasons’, was a wonderful tribute to the late Paudie. It was so evident in Aine’s presentation of the undeniable respect and love people had working with Paudie. For everyone that attended, they left with so many treasured memories and anecdotes that will certainly keep Paudie’s spirit alive and well in Killarney National Park.

Call for local input to climate action plan Have your say on Kerry’s Draft Local Authority Climate Action Plan 2024-2029 Kerry County Council is inviting members of the public to have their say on the Council’s Draft Climate Action Plan and to join the discussion on how the local authority can support communities to adapt to climate change. The Council has published its Draft Local Authority Climate Action Plan (20242029) outlining the main challenges facing the various sectors in the county in the years ahead, and how a collaborative approach to decarbonisation and climate change can be achieved. Submissions on the plan can now be made through the Kerry County Council website and a number of drop-in public consultation sessions are planed over the coming weeks. ‘As we face the challenges of climate change, Kerry County Council has now developed its Local Authority Climate Action Plan (LACAP) in line with National Climate Action policy,’ said Paul Neary, Acting Director of Services with Kerry County Council. ‘The Climate Action Plan sets out how the Council, along with all stakeholders, will tackle the challenges the county faces from climate change. The plan

specifically addresses mitigation, how we can actively cut harmful emissions and adaptation, and ways in which we can cope with impacts into the future.’ ‘We know, for example, the county is likely to experience increased temperatures, heavier rainfall and more severe winter storms. The knock-on effects are already evident. They include increased flooding, coastal erosion but also how we deliver services across the community and likely impacts on our biodiversity and wildlife. Everyone is now invited to contribute towards achieving a climate resilient, biodiversity rich, environmentally sustainable and climate neutral economy,’ said Mr Neary. The plan has been coordinated by the Council’s Climate Action Team and is informed by early and proactive engagement with the public and stakeholders over the summer months. The Draft Climate Action Plan, along with several environmental reports that accompany the plan, are available for viewing at https://consult.kerrycoco. ie/ and in local libraries. A number of drop-in events on the plan will be held around the county: in Dingle Library on November 2nd from 6.30pm-7.30pm; Tralee Library on November 14th from 6.30pm-8pm; Caherciveen Library on November 16th from 6.30pm-8pm; Killarney Library on November 21st from 6.30pm-8pm and Listowel Library on November 23rd from 6.30pm-8pm. Submissions and comments on the Climate Action Plan can be made online until 1 December 2023 or by post to the Climate Action Unit, Kerry County Council, Woodland Industrial Estate, Killarney, Co. 500 Species of Fungi - 202 new specimens, A remarkable new book by Louis O’Toole - ‘Fungi Of Killarney National Park’ - launched by Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan TD.

New book records 500 species of fungi in Killarney National Park Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan TD, launched a new book titled ‘Fungi of Killarney National Park’ in Killarney. Researched and produced by Louis O’Toole and published by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the book is the most comprehensive inventory of fungi recorded in Killarney National Park, documenting almost 500 species of fungi through photographs and text. The Minister launched the book at the annual National Parks and Wildlife Conference, which takes place in Killarney this year. He said: “We are blessed with the variety of wildlife that Ireland’s National Parks are home to, including many well-known and charismatic species. But this extraordinary book pays tribute to an often overlooked corner of the natural world: the kingdom of fungi. These amazing organisms work in symbiosis with plants, recycling nutrients and supporting key ecosystem functions, and the diversity of their forms, textures and colours can be jaw-dropping. This wonderful book combines local knowledge, skilled photography and research and records 202 new specimens of fungi found in Killarney National Park.

It is engaging, educational and makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of the ecology of one of Ireland’s most precious places for nature.” Éamonn Meskell, Divisional Manager, NPWS, Killarney National Park said: “Louis’s book is of enormous importance to Killarney National Park and to Ireland. There are now more records of fungi from areas of woodlands and this portrays the unique and important ecological diversity that exists in the Park”. Dr Tom Harrington from the University of Limerick provided research advice and guidance to the author, Louis O’Toole. Louis added “This book provides an invaluable scientific record, and highlights an aspect of stunning diversity of the ecosystem found within Killarney National Park. Something to be cherished and preserved to the best of our abilities into the future.” Louis O’Toole will speak about the book at an event during the popular Autumn Series Talks hosted each year by Killarney National Park. This event takes place at 8pm on Thursday October 26th at Killarney House and Gardens, and will also be live streamed on Killarney National Parks Facebook Page.

To retain the gold medal, to win Best in County, winning best in Region, as well as to be shortlisted for Overall Winner and last, but not at all least, to win Tidiest Large Town in Ireland – these are all outstanding achievements and testament to the co-operative spirit here in Killarney town. Commentary made by the Tidy Towns adjudication committee highly commends the look, feel and ambiance of

Killarney town. They also commented on the town’s schools, Killarney’s new communities volunteers, community groups, businesses and industry all gelling together. This is the secret of Killarney’s shared success, the town’s strong volunteer tradition and pride in their community! The Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin and Killarney Looking Good Chairperson Michael Gleeson were in unison in thanking Killarney Looking Good Volunteers and all those who come out year-round, fair weather and foul. Their dedication sees them “rise to the challenge of keeping Killarney looking so fine throughout the year”, said Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin at the

27.10.2023 gathering of volunteers and Kerry County Council staff at Fitzgerald Stadium. Chairperson Michael Gleeson also thanked the Community Employment Scheme staff, the Meitheal, and the Municipal District elected members who have always supported Killarney Looking Good. However, special thanks was also made to Flossie and Beach Cleaners, one of the newest group of volunteers who helped out in 2023 in keeping Killarney looking great by Municipal District Manager Mrs Angela McAllen during the gathering. Mrs McAllen went on to commend the sponsors of Killarney Looking Good, who have been so generous with their support – “without whose help the task would be so much the larger” she stated. All gathered agreed that the enormous contributions made over the years by the dearly departed and much missed Yvonne Quill and Father Michael Murphy were best recognised by the carrying on of their work by all. Their work over the years continues to be an inspiration for all in reaching the high standards they helped to establish.

Christmas Shoe Box Appeal seeking volunteers It's that time of year again, Team Hope Christmas Shoebox appeal has commenced. Pa Daly TD blames Garda resignations on FG mismanagement

Cllr Michael Cahill calls for emergency meeting on drugs At this month's Joint Policing Committee meeting, a Kerry County Councilor called on the JPC to organise an Emergency Meeting on Drugs where all stakeholders will be invited and to explore what improvements can be made in regard to this major problem in Kerry. Fianna Fáil Councilor Michael Cahill who raised the matter said "Drug use is on the increase with increased numbers before the courts for possession of drugs for their own use and/or supply, there is a massive increase in recreational use, there are increases in Drug driving detections, reports of drinks being spiked, etc. Knowing the devastating effect this is having on society, on families and especially on our youth, I propose the JPC organise an Emergency Meeting where all stakeholders will be invited and to explore what improvements can be made in regard to this major problem in our county." "As for all those involved in recreational

use, it needs to be pointed out what harm they are actually causing, to themselves and their families. Recreational drug use causes addiction and no it’s not as simple as saying ‘I can stop any time I want’. The knock-on effects of Drug addiction need to be pointed out and explained. How it starts with ‘borrowing’ from family and friends, until there is a dependency on the substance. The need to obtain drugs can take over one’s life and funding the habit is very difficult to keep up with. Before a drug user knows it, there is a large debt owed to dealers. Parents are often helpless, with threats of violence, etc.” “We must educate our youth on the dangers of recreational drug use and we must lead by example for the sake of our children and our children’s children. What we are seeing is a very dangerous situation developing for all of our society, where criminal drug suppliers will take control of the lives of many. In fact, if they are allowed, they will make all our lives ‘Hell on Earth” added Councillor Cahill.

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice, Pa Daly TD, has said that record Garda resignations and missed recruitment targets are symptomatic of Fine Gael’s mismanagement of the Justice system for over a decade. Deputy Daly made his remarks following this week’s Oireachtas Joint Committee engagement with Garda representatives. The committee heard from the Garda Representative Association, the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, the Restaurant Association of Ireland and Retired Garda Sergeant Mr Anthony Gallagher. Teachta Daly said: “The issues raised in relation to recruitment and retention by speakers are of no great surprise given recent developments. They included pay, conditions and the new rosters. Morale within rank and file Garda members is low and the historic resignations and missed recruit-

ment targets are symptomatic of that. “There was clear frustration regarding the lack of engagement by the Department of An Taoiseach in the A Policing Service for the Future process, as well as regarding implementation of the Commission for the Future of Policing recommendations. “The witnesses were also clear about the challenges faced in relation to anti-social behaviour in and around major cities, including the centralisation of drug services within city centres. Declining Garda numbers have left resources extremely stretched in these locations and a visible lack of Garda patrols have left businesses, residents and visitors worried about assaults and thefts. “These are all long standing issues, stemming from Fine Gael’s mismanagement of the Justice system for over a decade now. It is clear from today’s meeting that change is badly needed from the Government.”

Foley welcomes commencement of advance payments for Kerry Farmers Cllr Martin Grady allocates funding Local Fianna Fáil TD and Minister Minister Foley said: “I am delighted to for Ballycasheen footpaths for Education, Norma Foley, has welcomed the announcement from the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, that advance payments under the 2023 Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS) and Complementary Redistributive Income Support for Sustainability (CRISS) have commenced. 6,273 payments to farmers in Kerry have commenced, with a total value of over €27 million.

welcome that today, advance payments under the BISS & CRISS worth over €27 million to more than 6,000 farmers here in Kerry have commenced. I know just how crucial these payments are for family farm income and how important they are to businesses in Kerry, bringing a welcome boost in cashflow to the rural economy. Fianna Fáil in government is committed to ensuring that these scheme payments continue to issue in the most efficient way possible to ensure that these vital supports are delivered to farmers in a timely manner.”

Cllr Martin Grady has highlighted the terrible condition of the narrow footpaths at Ballycasheen, close to Ballycasheen School, which are old and holding a lot of water. “This has been an ongoing problem for local residents and especially for children who must either walk through puddles before a day of school or step out onto a busy road to avoid getting wet.” Cllr Grady has allocated funding to carry out improvement works in the area to the poorest sections of the footpath.

Autumn and winter brings a wondrous need for comfort food, and Killarney’s burgeoning culinary scene gives us a range of superb options. | By Aidan Quirke The town's food offerings are in constant flux with enhanced menus from new businesses to the well-established household names that we love for the big occasion. Since our comprehensive feature last autumn there have been some great additions, including The Brewery in Fossa, Fredericks, Great Southern and Chapter 64 at the Dromhall Hotel. The Brewery offers a select menu for the casual night out and features music on Friday and Saturday nights. Try the pork ribs to start, followed by the Killarney Stout Brisket Burger and of course wash it down with a Killarney Blonde. Both Chapter 64 and Fredericks are targeting that private dining experience for the big occasion in your life. Whether it’s a christening or retirement party, both venues offer a bespoke service. The service and attention to detail to your special occasion is at the utmost in these venues. When it comes to fine dining, we have a exceptional range of options. Harrow

now just over 18 months old, has found a solid following for its excellent menu featuring, wild venison, pork belly and fresh fish. Service and wine menu are what you would expect from this team, simply excellent. Danu @ The Brehon quietly keeps bringing out the hits, under the watchful eye of Chef Chad Byrne, who ensures that the daily specials are fresh, interesting and on point. Check out the compressed watermelon starter with mango and pickled ginger sauce, and the seared chicken supreme with bacon and onion rosti cake. The Brehon bar also offers an excellent bar menu and is a regular lunch time haunt for the team here. The Peregrine team @ The Park Hotel, consistently produce high end food, in a fabulous setting designed by renowned interiors expert Kim Partridge, perfect for that intimate meal. The menu features Cromane oysters, aged parmesan, smoke beef fillet and

dover sole. All superb dishes. Food with a view is always welcome, and looking over the Killarney lakes of an autumn evening at The Aghadoe Hotel is one of those must do local experiences. The room is expertly lit and as you would expect from such a strong team the service excellent. The herb crusted Irish rack of lamb is super tasty and comes with beetroot gnocchi (a first for me). Stepping away from the fine dining experience to a casual offering you have The Ross, always worth going early to sample the wide drinks menu and gin bar. The menu has something for everyone, and the buzzy atmosphere is really something to be experienced. Don’t forget they also offer a Sunday brunch between 10.30 and 2.30 p.m. Across the road we have Cafe Du Parc evening dining, which also offers a Sunday brunch and a lively evening atmosphere. The new evening menu is broad to suit most palettes. It is worth checking the Killarney Urban Farm signature salad with salad leaves growing less

than 100 metres away. Well worth asking your server about this unique urban farm. A good range of small and large plates ensures that you will have room to toast that special occasion or reunion with a signature cocktail. Ove the coming months many of us will be visiting the INEC for a gig. Already mentioned is The Brehon Bar, you also have the Gleneagle bar and restaurant menus. The Victoria is another alternative, a very cosy room and excellent menu. The Ivy Lounge is perfect for that pre gig meal and worth a visit if looking for a stylish dinner venue. If shopping in Tralee, this winter I can highly recommend The Ashe Hotel for a casual dining experience, great bar, and excellent room in the heart of Tralee town. Always book ahead to avoid disappointment. Finally, due make a reservation with your local restaurant this autumn. Always nice at this time of year to have something to look forward to.

Dinesh's Christmas Recipe

Chestnut and Milk Chocolate Macaroon Dinesh Mauree Head Pastry Chef & Chocolatier The Peregrine at The Killarney Park

PROFILE: With classical culinary training from the Ecole Hôtelière Sir Gaëtan Duval and experience in Mauritian luxury hotels, I moved to Ireland in 2016. There, I worked at renowned establishments like Shanahan’s on The Green and Ely. My passion for pastry, chocolate and dedication to using quality, seasonal ingredients define my approach. I also enjoy teaching and passing on traditional culinary methods to my team. If your kitchen had a theme song, what would it be? We always have something energetic playing. What's your secret ingredient that makes everything taste better? Valrhona Chocolate. If you were a food, what food would you be, and why? Coconut, as it reminds me of home in Mauritius. What's the funniest kitchen mishap you’ve experienced? A colleague's powdered sugar shaker went haywire while dusting a fruit tart, transforming them into a sugar-coated masterpiece. We had a good laugh before saving the dessert. If you were to open your own restaurant, what would you call it? Degaz Éire, a combination of Mauritian and Irish-inspired desserts. What is the best cooking tip you ever received? Cook everything with passion. Complete this sentence: "Cooking is like... "An art form, where flavours and ingredients become your palette. What's the strangest food combination you secretly love? Basil and strawberries: Fresh basil adds a unique herbal twist to classic strawberry desserts. If you had to teach someone one cooking skill, what would it be? If I were to teach one cooking skill, it would be "listening" to your teacher and peers. This fosters a collaborative and effective learning environment. If your kitchen utensils could talk, what would they say about when you're not around? They'd talk about the upcoming Festive Afternoon Tea in December, where I'm planning a delightful array of seasonal pastry creations.

SERVES: 2

INGREDIENTS: 400g centre fillet of beef Olive oil 40g salted butter 1 sprig of fresh thyme 1 sprig of rosemary 1 banana shallot 1 clove of garlic 150g wild mushrooms 1 tbsp light soy sauce Drizzle truffle oil, (optional) 1 x 150g block puff pastry 2 large free-range egg 75gm milk 75gm flour

• FOR THE GRAVY: 1 banana shallot Cooked beef trimmings (remove straight from the oven when Wellington is cooked) 1 clove garlic 1 sprig of fresh thyme 1 sprig rosemary 50ml Maderia wine 1 heaped teaspoon of Irish mustard 2 heaped teaspoons of plain flour, plus extra for dusting

COOKING METHOD: STEP 1: Preheat a large frying pan on a high heat. Rub the beef all over with sea salt and black pepper. Pour a generous drizzle of oil into the pan, then add the beef, followed by 20g of butter to caramelise. Sear the beef for 4-6 minutes in total, turning regularly with tongs, then remove to a plate and set aside. STEP 2: For the paté base, wipe out the pan and return to a medium heat. Peel a shallot and garlic clove, then very finely chop with the wild mushrooms and put into the pan with the remaining 20g of butter and another drizzle of oil. Add a sprig of thyme and rosemary leaf and cook until soft and starting to caramelise, stirring regularly. Add light soy sauce into the pan and cook until the moisture has evaporated from the mix, then tip the contents onto a chopping board and drizzle with the truffle oil (if using). Finely chop it all by hand to a spreadable consistency. Taste and season to your liking. STEP 3: For your pancake lining, mix together large egg and milk until fully combined, then sieve in the flour on top of the mix until it’s fully blended. Melt butter on a hot pan and pour the pancake mix into pan seasoning with salt and pepper if desired. Cook on medium heat and flip until golden in colour. STEP 4: Preheat the oven to 210°C/425°F/gas 7. On a flour-dusted surface, roll out the pastry to 25cm x 30cm. With one of the longer edges in front of you, add the pancake on top of the pastry before spreading the mushroom pâté over the pancake, leave a 5cm gap at either end of the pastry and at the edge furthest away from you and egg wash these edges. STEP 5: Sit the beef on the paté and snugly wrap the pancake and pastry around the beef, pinching the ends to seal. Egg wash around the pastry and ensure every piece is covered for a golden colour. STEP 6: Transfer the Wellington to a large baking tray lined with greaseproof paper, with the pastry seal at the base. Place in the preheated oven on 210°C for 25mins for a juicy medium-rare finish, or 30mins for a medium finish. Once cooked, rest the Wellington for 5-6 minutes. STEP 7: For the gravy, peel and roughly chop a shallot and garlic clove and put into a large pan on a medium heat with a drizzle of oil and add the thyme and rosemary leaves, toss for a few minutes. Add the beef trimmings and juice, add the Madeira and continue to cook, then stir in the mustard and flour. Cook to your liking, stirring occasionally. SERVING SUGGESTION: Accompany with duck fat roasted potatoes and vegetables and a creamy, velvet cabbage.

Cedric's Christmas Recipe

Chef’s Signature Mejadra Cedric Bottarlini Head Chef Lake Room Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa

PROFILE: During my education in France, my free time was spent working abroad. After spending a “summer” in Ireland, I decided to come back a few years later. Besides a little break in the Middle East, I have spent most of my career in Ireland working from Donegal to Cork sharing and learning new skills while discovering the constantly growing local artisan market. If your kitchen had a theme song, what would it be? It would be: “Play That Funky Music” by Wild Cherry What's your secret ingredient that makes everything taste better? Indian Philosophy: Positive thought while cooking. It will help your cooking in ways salt never has. If you were a food, what food would you be, and why? A salmon, based on the Myth of the Salmon of knowledge when Fionn acquired all the knowledge in the world (a much simpler world at the time though…). I spend most of my time educating myself and others. Probably annoying at times! What's the funniest kitchen mishap you’ve experienced? All mishaps were proper mishaps. Nothing funny so far… If you were to open your own restaurant, what would you call it? Eucalyptus What is the best cooking tip you ever received? Understand your ingredients before tackling them. Complete this sentence: "Cooking is like..." Understanding a multicultural language without saying a word. What's the strangest food combination you secretly love? It’s the laziest dish that I cook at home when I need a quick fix. I use pan fried 4 Frankfurter sausages cut into chunks, 1 tsp of curry powder and 3 heaped tbsp of crème fraiche, pan fry the sausages with the curry powder and then add the crème fraiche. Cook for 2 minutes. Pour in a bowl with rice. You are done… If you had to teach someone one cooking skill, what would it be? Curiosity. If your kitchen utensils could talk, what would they say about when you're not around? They might just have a party!

INGREDIENTS: • Spiced Pilaf Rice 1 small onion diced (0.5cm) 1 small carrot (0.5cm) 3 chopped garlic 1 tbsp of ground cumin 1 tbsp of ground coriander 1/2 tsp of cinnamon 1 tsp of turmeric 1/2 tsp of all spice 50ml of olive oil 1/2 kg of red rice 800 ml of vegetable bouillon

• Lentils 250g Lentils 800 ml of vegetable bouillon cold 1 carrot diced (0.5cm) 1 large red onion diced (0.5cm) 3 clove of garlic chopped 1 branch of celery diced 1/2 tsp of maldon sea salt • Sauce 0.5 kg carrot thinly sliced (cleaned and skin on) 1 tbsp. cumin 100g of cream cheese 1 lime juice 3tbsp of fresh coriander roughly chopped

COOKING METHOD: Step 1: Use an oven proof sauce pan for this recipe. Sweat the onions and carrots with the oil until soft but no colouration. Add in all the spice and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Add in the rice and stir for a minute. Add in the bouillon, bay leaf and thyme, bring it to the boil. Cover the pan with tin foil . Place the pan in the oven at 180 for 45 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven, “grain” the rice, adjust the seasoning and leave it aside. While the rice is baking, step 2 and 3 can be organised. Step 2: Sweat the onion, garlic, carrot and celery in a saucepan. Add in the herbs, the lentils, the cold bouillon, bring it to the boil and cook gently for about 20 minutes. Add the salt into the lentils, leave the lentils to rest in the bouillon for 10 minutes. Drain the lentils and keep them aside Step 3: Cover the carrots and cumin with water (only until it reaches the top of the carrots), place a lid on and cook them gently until very soft (up to 20 minutes from boiling point, add water if it gets to dry and needs a bit more time to cook). Strain the carrots but keep the cooking juice. Liquidize the carrots until very smooth using a jug blender (consistency of a thick soup), add some of the cooking juice if needed. Add in the rest of the ingredients. Season to taste Step 4: Combine the lentils and the rice. The mix itself is vegan. Garnish the dish with crispy onion (they can be purchased in stores) and some Sumac (available in specialized shops).

The Killarney Park’s Louise Byrne on Reducing Food Waste this Christmas

Each year, an estimated one third of all food produced – equivalent to 1.3 billion tonnes worth around $1 trillion – ends up rotting in the bins of consumers and retailers, or spoiling due to poor transportation and harvesting practices. While Christmas is a time for feasting and celebration, it can also be a time for excess food waste. In fact, it is estimated that food waste increases by up to 50% during the festive season. With that in mind, we caught up with Louise Byrne, Sustainability Manager with the Killarney Park Hotel, to discuss the issue of food waste in business and to give you a few tips to reduce your waste this festive season.

“We at The Killarney Park find the above fact abhorrent given food shortages experienced by many around the world. In line with UNSDG 12 we aim to eliminate waste out of our products and particularly our menus” One of the ways The Killarney Park is doing this is by analysing their food waste with the help of ‘positive carbon’ food cameras. “The technology give us an insight into where food waste is being created. We now have data on the exact weights, categorisation, carbon footprint, and cost of the ingredients we throw away. This is inclusive of both plate waste and preparation stage waste. With this data, we can adjust dishes, portion sizes, and problematic menu items to help reduce our food waste further. So, if these are the steps businesses are taking to reduce waste what can we do to limit our food waste at home this Christmas? Here are some tips from Louise: 1. Plan your meals - One of the best ways to avoid food waste is to plan your meals in advance. This will help you to buy only what you need and to avoid cooking too much food.

2. Be realistic about portion size - It is easy to overestimate how much food people will eat, especially at Christmas. When you are cooking, be realistic about portion sizes and err on the side of caution. 3. Use leftovers - Leftovers can be a great way to save money and reduce food waste. There are endless possibilities for what you can do with leftovers, so get creative! 4. Freeze food -If you know you are not going to be able to eat something before it goes off, freeze it. This will extend its shelf life and prevent it from going to waste. 5. Donate food - If you have surplus food that you cannot use, donate it to a food bank or homeless shelter. This is a great way to ensure that your food does not go to waste. 6. Compost food waste - If you have a compost bin, you can compost your food waste. This is a great way to reduce the amount of food waste that goes to landfill. By following these tips, you can help to reduce food waste at Christmas. This is not only good for the environment, but it is also good for your wallet.

Christmas Food

Traditions around the World As Christmas approaches, the aroma of delectable dishes wafts through homes across the globe, each region boasting unique culinary traditions that have been passed down for generations. Christmas traditions around the world are a celebration of

culture, heritage, and the joy of sharing meals with loved ones. As the festive season approaches, why not challenge yourself to cook something inspired by a different culture.

France Traditionally served after Midnight Mass, Le Réveillon is the French Christmas feast that showcases the country's culinary prowess. While regional variations exist, champagne is a ubiquitous presence throughout the meal. Foie gras, whether made from goose or duck liver, is a common appetizer, along with oysters, smoked salmon, and buckwheat crepes in Brittany. The main course often features roasted goose stuffed with chestnuts, though turkey is gaining popularity. Other roasted meats such as beef and lamb are also not uncommon. For dessert, the traditional bûche de Noël takes center stage. This rolled sponge cake is filled with flavored buttercream and decorated to resemble a fallen log, complete with powdered sugar "snow" and meringue mushrooms.

Hungary In accordance with church tradition, Hungarians refrain from consuming meat until Christmas Day. As a result, most Hungarians indulge in a fish soup known as Halászlé on Christmas Eve. The main course is also a fishbased dish. Mákos guba, a dessert made with bread soaked in warm milk, sugar, and poppy seeds, is the most popular option. Beigli, a cake with two distinct fillings—poppy seed (mákos) or walnut (diós)—is another delectable treat enjoyed during the Christmas season.

Poland The Polish Christmas Eve dinner, known as Wigilia, is a delightful feast that signifies the arrival of the holiday season. Traditionally meatless, the meal commences with the breaking of bread, a symbol of unity and fellowship. ex In a gesture of hospitality, an extra place is set at the table for any unexpected guests who may seek solace and companionship. Fish dishes such as herring marinated in sour cream, ac fish baked with a creamy sauce, and pike accompanied by hard-boiled eggs and boiled potatoes are prominent features of the Wigilia meal. Christmas borsch, a vibrant beetroot soup, is a staple, along with various types of compotes made from dried fruits, reminiscent of American cranberry sauce. For dessert, honey and poppy seed cookies, as well as babka, a rich and decadent sweet bread, are served, adding a touch of sweetness to the festive occasion.

Argentina

On Christmas Eve, Argentines gather for a festive feast that sets their traditions apart from those of their neighbours. Beef, pork, and turkey are staple meats, accompanied by an assortment of mincemeat pies with unique family recipes. Niños envueltos, a regional favorite, consists of large squares of steak on stuffed with hard-boiled eggs, onions, and spices before being baked to perfection. Champagne flows freely along alongside a refreshing beverage made with chunks of fruit, cider, and fruit juice. While roasted peacock is a coveted dish for Christmas Day, it is not universally enjoyed. Panettone and sweet puddings provide a delightful conclusion to the meal.

Great Southern Killarney

PROFILE: With years of experience in kitchens my passion has grown over the years. I was introduced into kitchens when I was 14 years old in Springfort Hall Country House where my passion grew stronger. I studied Culinary Arts in Munster Technological University Cork. After many years working my way up I took my first role as Head Chef of a restaurant in County Limerick. After many visits to Killarney I knew I would someday settle down here with my family while building my career. I became Sous Chef of Aghadoe Heights Hotel for many years. I then decided to join Relief Chef as an Executive Head Chef doing agency work around the Munster area to enhance my knowledge in different style kitchens. I finally decided to settle into my current role as Executive Head Chef at Great Southern Killarney. If your kitchen had a theme song, what would it be? “Welcome to the Jungle” Guns N’ Roses What's your secret ingredient that makes everything taste better? Butter, everything tastes better with some Kerry Gold Butter.

COOKING METHOD:

If you were a food, what food would you be, and why? A lobster, because I already get bright red in the sun. (Ginger Hair)

STEP 1: Add dry ingredients into a mixing bowl: wholemeal flour, sieved plain flour, caster sugar, salt, porridge oats and sieved bread soda. Mix well together on low speed.

What's the funniest kitchen mishap you’ve experienced? We gave a kitchen porter a leaf of gelatin and told him it was a part for the oven that needed to be cleaned, he put it into the dishwasher and it disappeared (dissolved), he was worried when he couldn’t find it. We eventually told him the truth.

STEP 2: Gradually add milk & Guinness and continue to mix on low speed.

If you were to open your own restaurant, what would you call it? Misfits

STEP 6: Place in the oven for 50mins 160*C

What is the best cooking tip you ever received? Take your time

STEP 8: Once cooled, place on a wire rack to cool completely.

Complete this sentence: "Cooking is like..." This one time at band camp What's the strangest food combination you secretly love? Tuna Pasta Bake- Tuna, pasta in a tomato base sauce baked with grated cheese and Tayto Cheese & onion crisps on top. If you had to teach someone one cooking skill, what would it be? How to chop correctly for a home cook or chef. If your kitchen utensils could talk, what would they say about when you're not around? I miss him, it's so dark in this box.

STEP 3: In a saucepan add golden syrup, black treacle & butter. Heat until butter is melted and mix to combine. Add to your mixing bowl of ingredients. STEP 4: Grease loaf tin with oil, add mixture to ¾ full tin. STEP 5: sprinkle a little oats on top of the bread mix. STEP 7: Remove from the oven, let cool slightly in tin.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Remembering Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty 60 years on Born in Lisrobin, Kiskeam, in the year 1898, into a family staunchly dedicated to the Republican cause, Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty's early years were spent in Killarney. He pursued his theological education, culminating in the attainment of a Bachelor of Arts degree. In the year 1925, he received his ordination in Rome and subsequently became a part of the Vatican Diplomatic Service. His service took him to various corners of the globe, including Egypt, Haiti, Santo Domingo, and Czechoslovakia, before he returned to Rome in 1938 to serve in the Holy Office. Initially, Mgr. O'Flaherty dismissed reports of Nazi atrocities as mere propaganda propagated by the Allied forces. However, his perspective underwent a profound transformation when he witnessed the brutal treatment of Rome's Jewish population by the Nazis. In the autumn of 1942, he embarked on a daring mission to smuggle and shelter refugees who were at risk due to the intensified crackdown on prominent Jews and anti-Fascists by the Germans and Italians. Each evening, he courageously stood in the entrance of St. Peter's, even in plain view of the German soldiers sta-

tioned across the piazza. By the spring of 1943, Mgr. O'Flaherty's humanitarian efforts expanded to include British POWs who had managed to escape and were trapped behind enemy lines. His initial network of informal contacts grew into "The Organisation," a massive partisan undertaking aimed at rescuing individuals of various creeds and nationalities, including Jews, soldiers, and refugees. In 1960, O'Flaherty suffered a serious stroke and was forced to return to Ireland. Shortly before his first stroke in 1960, he was about to be confirmed as the papal nuncio to Tanzania. He moved to Cahersiveen to live with his sister at whose home he died on 30 October 1963, aged 65. Last week, President Michael D. Higgins made a high profile visit to the pope in Rome and as a part of the itinerary, laid a wreath in honour of the late Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, whose courageous work saved the lives of thousands of people during the Nazi occupation. “His work was extraordinary, and it took great courage, it was important to honour the terrible, tragic events which people had to transcend in that period”.

SpaceX re-entering Starlink satellites could hurt or kill people The ever-growing number of satellites and subsequent re-entries could be a danger to earthlings, some experts say. The FAA, a regulatory body that licenses the launch of satellites, issued a report, called "Risk Associated with Re-entry Disposal of Satellites from Proposed Large Constellations in Low Earth Orbit." The report stated that SpaceX's Starlink satellites will account for 85% of the risk to people on the ground and aviation from re-entering space junk by the middle of the next decade.

There are currently around 5,000 Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). SpaceX is building a constellation of 12,000 satellites, with plans to expand Starlink to 40,000. SpaceX reacted strongly to the report, describing the claims of potential risk of injury and death associated with Starlink as "preposterous, unjustified and inaccurate,". "To be clear, SpaceX's satellites are designed and built to fully demise during atmospheric re-entry during disposal at end of life, and they do so.”

“Compelling Evidence" That Human Activities Influencing Irish Climate According to research conducted by Maynooth University's Icarus Climate Research Centre, there is "compelling evidence" indicating that human activities are signifi significantly influencing the climate in Ireland.

Vital Irish aid reaches conflict-hit Sudan Irish humanitarian aid has reached war-weary civilians in Sudan where a major conflict has been raging for half a year displacing over 5.7 million people.

Irish aid organisation Concern Worldwide brought trucks carrying over 35 tonnes of supplies from Chad to West Darfur in the North African country. The aid supplies, which include blankets, mosquito nets, jerry-cans and soap, were provided with funding from the government’s development agency Irish Aid to help desperate families trying to survive the ongoing conflict. More than 4 million people in the Darfur region alone in Western Sudan have been displaced since violence broke with over 500,000 fleeing to Chad as refugees. Getting relief supplies into Darfur with the ongoing conflict is logistically very challenging, but Concern staff said their mission was made possible with the cooperation and support of local authorities on both sides of the Chad-Sudan border. Over 9,000 people have been killed

since this latest conflict in Sudan began on April 15th this year. The UN recently described the crisis in Sudan as “one of the worst humanitarian nightmares in recent history” with many horrifying reports of violence and people suffering from hunger and the impacts of conflict. There has also been a near total collapse of health, food, and economic infrastructure. According to the World Health Organisation, about 65 per cent of the population have no access to health services, and more than 80 per cent of health facilities in conflict areas are not functioning. When fighting erupted, Concern, which has worked in Sudan for 38 years, temporarily suspended its work for a few days with its 140 Sudanese staff sheltering in their homes or in safer areas. They resumed their operations and continue to provide health and nutrition treatment along with emergency responses to support people displaced due to the current humanitarian crisis in the country.

Inventor isn’t arsing around Seung-min Park, the brains behind the Stanford Toilet, has earned an Ig Nobel Prize for his peculiar invention. The Stanford Toilet takes a conventional bathroom fixture and infuses it with a slew of technological marvels, including a urinalysis dipstick test strip, a computer vision system for analysing one's bathroom activities, an anal-print sensor coupled with an ID camera, and a telecommunications connection, all designed to monitor and assess human excretions. The inspiration for the anal-print sensor came from none other than the famous surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. Park noted in a blog post that Dalí discovered that

"the anus has 35 or 37 creases, which are as unique as fingerprints." Established in 1991, the Ig Nobels are a whimsical parody of the prestigious Nobel Prizes. They celebrate "achievements that first make people laugh and then make them think."

This study involved an analysis of his historical temperature and rainfall data in Ireland, drawing connections to global temperature variations. It then assessed how Ireland's climate has evolved from a period when natural climate variability prevailed to its current state, which is characterized as "unusual" or "unfamiliar" in relation to the historical benchmark. findThe researchers assert that these find ings underscore the substantial impact of human activities on Ireland's climate and emphasize the urgent need for climate

adaptation measures, particularly in the context of flood protection. Notably, the annual average temperature emerges as the most prominent indicator of human-induced climate change in Ireland. The country is experiencing a warming trend at a rate of 0.88 degrees for every 1 degree increase in global temperature. Furthermore, the study reveals an increase in rainfall over the examined period, which translates into "significant increases in flood risk." This warning is particularly relevant in light of recent flooding events caused by Storm Babet in various parts of the country. In fact, one-third of the 30 rainfall stations scrutinized in the study displayed heightened rainfall intensity, often resulting in surface flooding. On average, rainfall intensity increased by 8.2 percent for every 1 degree of global warming.

Another mass shooting in US Up to 20 people are feared to have been killed and dozens wounded after a shooting in the US state of Maine, with the suspect - a firearms instructor - still at large. Hundreds of police searched the city of Lewiston and surrounding areas of Maine state for a man sought in connection with mass shootings at a bar and a bowling alley. Authorities in Lewiston are investigating "two active shooter events" and have warned people to stay inside, away from windows, with doors locked. Police have released images of a man with a military-style assault rifle in a bowling alley and say they are looking for "armed and dangerous". The suspect is a 40-year-old man, with 20 years military service, who worked as an army firearms instructor and recently spent time at a mental health facility af-

ter hearing voices, according to an internal police notice. Police officers, many armed with rifles, have taken up positions across the city, and roads have been shut as the manhunt continues.

Best revenue manager and best family friendly hotel Killarney native Ann McCann was honoured for her work with The Gleneagle Hotel at the Irish Hotel Awards recently. Ann was awarded ‘Best Revenue Manager’ in Munster, a prestigious accolade that acknowledges her exceptional work in optimising hotel revenue and managing pricing strategies. “Ann plays an instrumental role in The Gleneagle and we are immensely proud of her accomplishments. Her dedication to excellence makes a significant impact on our overall performance," added Patrick O’Donoghue, CEO of The Gleneagle Group. “This award is a well-deserved recognition of Ann's outstanding contribution.”

Following in the footsteps of her grandmother Sheila McGough, and parents Moss and Ann Brosnan, Ann began working in The Gleneagle as a junior receptionist when she was twenty years old. She became a familiar face at The Gleneagle welcoming the hotel’s many guests while also progressing her career. Her flair for revenue, attention to detail and in-depth

Ann’s son Aaron also continues the family tradition and works as manager of the INEC Box Office. The Gleneagle also scooped the award for ‘Best Family Friendly Hotel’ in Munster and the overall award of ‘Best Family Friendly Hotel’ in Ireland at the Irish Hotel Awards. “We are thrilled to have been named the 'Best Family Friendly Hotel' in Ireland. Our team is committed to ensuring that every member of every family that walks through our doors feels welcome and

well taken care of. Many of our regular guests holidayed with us as kids and now bring their own children and even grandchildren. That is a testament to the team here,” said Patrick O’Donoghue The 'Best Family Friendly Hotel' award recognises The Gleneagle Hotel as a top destination for families. Known for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, live entertainment and extensive leisure facilities, The Gleneagle team focuses on going the extra mile to create unforgettable experiences for guests of all ages. Cannonball 4X4 road trip announced for Kerry The third annual Cannonball Overland Adventure sets off on November 10 and 11 to explore the stunning scenery of the kingdom of Kerry taking in Killarney Tralee and Dingle. Very few places cast a spell quite like the Dingle Peninsula. Located along the fabled Wild Atlantic Way, this 30-mile outcrop at the westernmost top of Ireland is home to craggy sea cliffs, rolling hills, and remote beaches. The carefully planned route takes in magnificent mountain passes, wild coastal drives and majestic lakes all the while weaving through the famous picturesque towns and villages of Kerry. westerly peninsula of Europe overlooking the breathtaking Dingle Bay. The Cannonball Overland 4X4 Adventure sees an array of both luxurious and off-road ready 4X4’s from the opulent Bentley Bentayga’s, Defenders old and new to monster Ford Raptors. Last year’s event saw a collection of Range Rover SVRs, Land Rover Defender 110’s, Audi Q8’s, Audi SQ7’s, Range Rover Sport’s, Jeep Wrangler’s, Porsche Cayenne’s and many more and some exciting new additions to this year’s event. In true Cannonball style, this road-trip goes the extra mile with wonders at every turn including a bagpiper on a bridge, some off-road surprises and ‘green laning’ and, of course, that rare ‘camaraderie’ that makes all Cannonball road-trips truly unforgettable experiences.

Fassbender’s four years of motor racing Michael Fassbender ended his fourth European Le Mans season at the weekend. The final two races of 2023 took place in his adopted home country of Portugal. The Hollywood A-Lister sat down at Spa-Francorchamps with Steph Wentworth for a one-to-one interview looking back on the highs and lows of his ELMS racing career, and how he got into racing after meeting with Patrick Dempsey on a flight to LA. Q: How has Patrick Dempsey, owner of Dempsey Proton, helped you in your journey to Le Mans? You’re very similar in that you have very similar careers outside of racing, and you have that same passion, once you get to a racetrack. How has he helped you in that journey? MF: “Well, he started it all for me with Porsche, obviously, because I was a race fan, I'd seen his achievement in Le Mans. And then we were just on a plane, I think it was either from LA to London, or vice versa, and he was in the seat behind me. And I just was like, ‘Hey, listen, I just want to say, a massive achievement’, and then we just started talking about racing. I told him that it was sort of my

ambition to go to Le Mans and race, in GT endurance, and he was like, ‘Look, I have a contact at Porsche’. After that flight, we exchanged details, and he hooked me up; that was really the start. “What was good about it is he understands the position, you know, where I was sort of pretty tough on myself in the first year, and he was like, ‘Relax, it's okay’. You know, it's like a lot to take on the first year, you know, just a lot of words of encouragement.” Q: Do you think that you've cultivated that relationship because you almost have that same career and that same passion? Do you think that that's kind of what made you kind of gravitate towards each other? MF: “Well, I think when you're working in the same industry you would say hi to somebody easier than you would if you were in different industries. But I don't think if he was in another industry, but as an amateur who had won Le Mans, I probably would have still approached him. But then we had dinner in Montreal, we were both working there at one point. Then we just started talking about the acting versus the driving, and then you have a lot of things in common for sure.”

Q: Do you think he was then a big reason as to why you chose Porsche? Because obviously, there were other manufacturers that are incredible in this series, you know, you've got Aston Martin and Ferrari. Is that the reason that you ended up kind of gravitating towards Porsche and Proton Competition? MF: “Yes. I mean he said, ‘Look, I've done this, I've been in the same position as you’. It's a journey and then it's a challenge there and Porsche are a great manufacturer to go with because they'll put you through the paces correctly. And then obviously, his relationship with Proton and Dempsey Proton Competition, there was a perfect sort of fit for me. Outside of that, I've always been a fan of Porsche and I was born in Germany. My dad was a Porsche fan. I always had the Matchbox 911 car. So, there was an affinity there in some respect, but, yeah, it was his connection with Porsche, how they approached it and that really started the ball rolling.” Q: Were you tempted to drive with another manufacturer? MF: “Well, I had done the Ferrari Challenge with Ferrari in North America. But this is just the way it sort of played out, bumping into him on that plane journey

and that set everything in motion.” Q: The Road to Le Mans series that you were a part of, it's been great content, obviously, for fans of racing already and for new fans alike. Do you ever watch the footage back and can you see how much of an impact that's had? MF: “For sure, I watch it. Working closely with Sebastian Barowski and the team that are shooting it, I'll see cuts before they actually go out and we always discuss about things. It was always a very open discussion about the fact that we wanted to show everything, even the bits that I would rather not reveal. But that's what makes it so interesting; to show the challenges of it all. Q: Do you believe that you've reached your full potential when it comes to racing? MF: “No, absolutely. I don't believe I've reached my full potential in anything. In acting certainly. I think it's a never-ending learning curve. And you obviously strive for the best you can do all the time, but I feel like I always fall short. So, no, I think it's a never-ending journey in most things in life.

House rebuilding costs have increased by an average of 12% nationally over the last 12 months The latest House Rebuilding Guide published by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) shows that national average re-build costs, which include demolition and site clearance, have increased by an average of 12% over the past 12 months. This is down significantly on the 21% increase recorded in the previous 12 months. This year’s SCSI House Rebuilding Guide shows a consistent increase in rebuild costs across the country with the majority of regions recording an average increase of 12% to 13%. Material prices have started to stabilise marginally but certain products such as insulation, windows and plumbing are still experiencing price increases. From an insurance perspective this instability has huge consequences for homeowners. Firstly your property should be insured

for the reinstatement cost and not the market value. In other words the cost of rebuilding the house excluding the site value. Bear in mind that currently the rebuild cost could be higher than the market value. The base rebuilding costs in the Kerry region are running at an average of €246€260 a square foot (or €2775 per square metre for a 4 bed detached house of 119 square metres) in the most recently published guide. The rebuilding rates quoted by SCSI are for estate type homes and not one-off homes. The calculation should account for the most recent building regulations,

professional fees, demolition costs and VAT, and should make provision for higher-than-average fittings, built in wardrobes, fences, walls, and garages. It is very important to note that “under insurance” can have a serious effect on any future claims settlements. Most policies include an “Average Clause” which means in the event of “under insurance” any claims settlement can be reduced in value in proportion to the degree of under insurance. Where the Sum Insured is only 75% of the total reinstatement cost, you will receive 75% of the agreed cost of reinstatement, whether the claim is made for partial reinstatement or total loss. I would recommend that you undertake a review of your reinstatement sum insured. Some insurers have begun applying index linking to existing home

Daft Q3 report shows house prices up on previous year A daft.ie house price report on Q3 2023 has shown that house prices nationally were 3.7% higher than 12 months ago; a modest increase in inflation compared to the first two quarters of the year. Price rises were highest in Munster and Connaught/Ulster @ 5.9% and 8.1% respectively. Interestingly the total number of properties available to buy on

June 1st was just under 12,200, down 20% on the same date last year and roughly half the pre-covid 2019 average of 24,000. The average price of a home in Kerry is now just under €270,000 with the average cost of a new build at just under €335,000. This shows that prices have continued to rise – albeit at a slower rate than has been common over the past decade.

As supply falters, demand seems resilient. Supply continues to be the main issue with approx. 3300 properties on the market in Munster on Sept 01st, down 19% on the same day 12 months previous. Since pre covid the number of homes available to buy at any point in time has slowly but steadily fallen. Is this down to a lack of supply or strong demand? The rise in prices in the last 6 months may be driven in part by a lack of supply – but both prices and quantities suggest that, so far at least, demand remains high.

Halloween tales at Cahernane House Hotel

Ashley & Stephen’s fairy-tale wedding Ashley Kerins, Tralee Road and Stephen Heelan, Knocknagree, Co.Cork were recently married at Monte Do Serrinho, Portugal. A large crowd of family and friends travelled to the glamourous wedding with many of the friends and family making the celebration their annual holiday. Ashley and Stephen first met in Killarney ten years ago and got engaged in Santorini in Greece in 2021 . Their son, Joey, who was born in March, also travelled to the wedding to celebrate the occasion. In what was a beautiful celebration in the most fabulous surroundings, Ashley’s parents

Humphrey and Helen and Stephens Parents Tommy and Caroline were all in attendance. Bridesmaids Tracey Kerins (sister) and her friend Rachel O’Connor were on hand to make sure the day ran smoothly for Ashley while Stephens brother, Darren and friend Cillian O’Connor were by Stephens side. The couple travelled on to Alvor for a further few days of celebrations before returning home together with their young son Joey.

Eddie Lenihan, one of Ireland’s most famous seanachaís and the country’s foremost expert on Irish fairies will once again visit Cahernane House Hotel in Killarney where he will share some of his mythical and ghoulish stories for Halloween. Eddie was a great hit with guests last Halloween and has been invited back to Cahernane this year to tell both residents and non-residents alike ancient stories about the myths and legends of Irish folklore. Irish fairy stories form a prominent part of Eddie’s huge repertoire, and he has collected these stories from old people all around Ireland who have had encounters with fairies or mythical creatures. He has also gathered historical tales and stories of notable figures such as the banshee, bad fairies, demon stories, accounts of saints, of monsters, ogres, giants, and ghosts. Some of the stories are not for the faint hearted and were curated from his years of research and by walking the tracks and trails of forgotten Ireland where solitary hawthorn bushes mark the sacred meeting places of the fairies. An interesting character, and an enthralling storyteller, Eddie has captured the imagination of audiences from Dublin to Dubai. The story telling evening is open for both residents and locals. At 6.00 pm on Halloween evening there will be a guided tour of the house and Eddie Lenihan’s stories will be begin

Eddie Lenihan.

later that night at 9.30pm, after dinner. Non-residents and people in the local area are also welcome to come and listen to Eddie’s scary stories on Halloween night complimentary… if they dare! The following morning, All Souls Day, Wednesday, November 1st, guests will meet at Killegy Graveyard to see where the original residents and builders of both Cahernane House and nearby Muckross House are buried and will hear some more interesting historical stories about the local area. To book The Halloween package at Cahernane House Hotel or for more information please see www.cahernane. com or call +353 64 663 1895.

Kilgobnet National School table quiz fundraiser Kilgobnet National School is holding a fundraising table quiz at The Inn Between Bar, Beaufort, on Friday, 10th November, at 7.30pm. The cost is €40 for a table of a maximum of 4 people. There will be generous cash prizes to be won for top scorers, as well as plenty of exciting spot prizes to be awarded to those with a little bit of luck on their side! There will also be a raffle on the night for more chances to go home with a prize. The Inn Between Bar is also kindly sponsoring finger food on the night. Maura O’ Connor, Principal of Kilgobnet National School, said, “Last year’s table quiz was an incredible success

with overwhelming support, both from sponsors and from the large crowd that attended on the night. The money that was raised went towards the completion of a community playground at the school, and we were thrilled when the playground opened in June. It has been a fantastic addition to our school and community. We are most fortunate to have such an active and interested Parents Association in Kilgobnet NS and they always go above and beyond in their efforts to support our school. Ongoing fundraising is important as it benefits the children in the school, especially as costs in schools have increased in recent times. We hope everyone has a fantastic night and enjoys the quiz!”.

3RD ANNIVERSARY O’LEARY (NEE HICKEY)

Don’t think of her as gone away her journeys just begun. Life holds so many facets this earth is only one. Just think of her as resting from the sorrows and the tears in a place of warmth and comfort where there are no days and years. Think how she must be wishing how we could know today how nothing but our sadness can really pass away. And think of her as living In the hearts of those she touched, for nothing loved is ever lost and she was loved so much. Loved always and forever missed by your daughter Kate.

In loving memory of Sheila O’Leary (nee Hickey) Late of Ballydribben Killarney and Millstreet Co.Cork Who died on 31st October 2020. God looked around his Garden And saw an empty space He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest Gods garden must be beautiful He only takes the best God knew you were in pain and a cure was not to be So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered come to me With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you slip away Although we loved you dearly we knew you could not stay It broke our hearts to lose you but you did not go alone For part of us went with you the day God called you home. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by your sister Noreen and niece Helen, brothers Ted and Michael, and their families.

Remembering one of our most loyal readers - ANNE HEALY The Killarney Advertiser team would like to remember one of our most loyal readers – Anne Healy, 92, who passed away peacefully at the Palliative Unit in UKH surrounded by her family on the 13th October. She loved reading the Advertiser every week, so much so that it was brought up to the altar at her funeral last week as part of her memorabilia. Anne was a beloved character and immersed her life in various avenues throughout the community. Born on May 13th 1931 and died on Our Lady of Fatima, Holy Day. This was very significant as Anne was a deeply religious person. She served as Eucharist Minister for many decades and devoted her personal time helping with many pilgrimages to Lourdes, Lough Derg and Knock. She also aided the Irish Wheelchair Association and distributed Meals on Wheels. Anne’s life wasn’t easy as she lost her dad when she was only 6. She was the eldest to her siblings Paddy, Mary, Catherine, Michael, Donal and John Joe and had to grow up fast. She assisted her mom on the farm in Kilbrean, and helped raise her younger siblings. Her first job was working in Mulcahy’s shoe shop. She was then accepted into St. Finian’s as a student nurse. Upon qualifying as a nurse, she went to Walton, Liverpool to graduate in General

IN MEMORIAM

Nursing. Returning home after graduating, she started her long career as a nurse in St. Finian’s. She furthered her career, to Assistant Director of Nursing, until her retirement in 1996. Anne lived a busy and fulfilled life. She cared for her mother, Catherine after, a stroke in 1987 to 1993, all the time working full time. She loved a game of cards and was a member of the Bridge and Whist clubs locally. She went on various holidays with her many great friends and always had a smile on her face. Anne was surrounded by her 32 nieces and nephews and it was rarely you would see her without children. She loved them all dearly and affectionately called them her little Tankereens. Her eldest nephew, Denisín, christened her Auntie and it stuck with her with family, friends and neighbours. She was extremely kind and very generous to them. She also had an adopted family. The O'Shea’s, Mary and Mike, were neighbours and became firm friends. She often babysat the children Michael, Mark and Clare and treated them like her own. She would have loved that

Clare said the first reading of her funeral mass and the boys were pall bearers, while Mike and Mary were the funeral directors of O'Shea’s Funeral Home. Her mass was very personal as it was served by her friend Fr. Kieran O Brien and family friend Fr. Martin Spillane in St. Mary’s Cathedral. The readings and Prayers of the Faithful were said by her nieces Celine Sky, Anne Holland, Anne Marie Healy, Evelyn Murphy, Elaine O'Loughlin, Geraldine O'Sullivan and Stephanie O'Connor. The personal gifts were given up by Kathleen O'Donoghue and Kathleen O'Reilly, and the offertory gifts were brought up by her Grandnephew and Grandniece Noah Murphy and Ciara O'Connor. The pallbearers were her many nephews. The eulogy was presented by her niece Marion Kervick and nephew Colm Healy. Both gave stories of their memories of Auntie and were met with both laughter and tears. It was a heartfelt ceremony and a very honourable guard of honour from her friends of St. Finian’s and Card Clubs. In the past few years Anne’s health had started to slowly deteriorate and sincere thanks to her many carers who visited her home. Her last few days were in the wonderful facility of the Palliative

Unit in UHK and the staff was so kind and helpful. Her fantastic neighbours in Muckross Grove were extremely kind to Anne and she couldn’t have wished for better ones. Anne is now at peace in Muckross Abbey, with her mom, dad, brothers Donal, Paddy, sister Catherine. Also her nephew John C Healy and niece Tara Healy Kenny along with her brother-in-law John Michael Spillane and sister-in-law Máire Healy. As in the words of her niece Marion Kervick, said in her eulogy “her smile was made of sunshine and her heart was solid gold”. “Death ends a Life but not a relationship”. Anne’s memory will always live on in her work and her kindness to others. May her kind soul Rest in Peace.

Kerry FC to ditch amateur status LOI club plan to go part-time next season, CEO confirms Kerry FC CEO Brian Ainscough has confirmed that his club will make the switch from amateur to part-time for their second season in the League of Ireland in 2024. Killarney man Ryan Kelliher became the first player to sign a professional contract with the Mounthawk Park club in August and Ronan Teahan also agreed to a pro deal later that month. Speaking to Kieran Burke on the Between The Stripes podcast as the 2023 season came to a close, Ainscough confirmed that more players will be rewarded with contracts in Year 2. “We came in as an amateur club,” the US-based Dubliner said. “We told people last year that we would probably go to part-time… I don’t know what people call part-time or full-time in the league - I’m not privy to how other clubs do their payrolls. But we’re basically going to a parttime basis next year which means more training, but which also means the players will get a little money in their pockets. “The goal down the road is that we become a full-time programme. Next year we’re definitely in a position where we can lock down Ryan Kelliher and players like him. “We knew we’d come in the first year and see what’s out there. And then, in the second year, push on a bit more. We’re not saying ‘baby steps’, we’re saying ‘steps’. We expect to see progress on the field and off the field as we go forward next year.” Billy Dennehy’s young side understandably struggled to pick up results throughout their debut season, finishing up in last place in the First Division having picked up just one win in 36 games. Ainscough remains upbeat, however, particularly in relation the support the

project has received from the local community. Despite their low points total, the average home attendance was just under 800. “I’m still as giddy about the thing as I was from Day 1. Starting off we were delighted and in my eyes it couldn’t have gone any better. You can say wins and losses but the support we’ve had down in Kerry from Day 1 has been fantastic. And the young players coming through has been

really good for me to see from the outside. “Our next step is to obviously be more competitive on the field. It’s a marathon. We’re not thinking that we have to get to the Premier Division next year or anything like that. The idea is that we definitely want our fans to feel that there is an improvement for 2024. And improving means results.”

Home game for undefeated Paul’s

St Paul’s will be seeking to maintain their perfect 100% record when they host the Marble City Hawks at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday. The game tips off at 7.30pm. The Kilkenny outfit have endured a tough start to the season, losing four of their five matches, but they have some quality players including Briana Bailey, Faye Mc-

Donnell and Aoibhin Dunphy. Paul’s will be favourites after their red-hot start to the new campaign. James Fleming’s side made it four wins from four with a comprehensive 37-point victory over the Limerick Sport Huskies in Limerick on Saturday last. Fleming was able to give the returning Sofia Paska her second debut for the club and the returning All Star looked sharper

than ever. Fellow new signing Khiarica Rasheed also excelled, hitting a gamehigh 27 points. Denise Dunlea and Lorraine Scanlon made impressive contributions, carrying on their form from recent matches with little fuss. By game’s end St Paul's had built up a huge lead and they now find themselves top of the pile at this early stage of the campaign.

UTILITY TRUST ST PAUL’S: Khiarica Rasheed 27, Sofia Paska 18, Lorraine Scanlon 16, Denise Dunlea 8, Rheanne O’Shea 8, Meabh Barry 6, Liadh Tobin 4, Leah McMahon 3, Lynn Jones 2, Mary Kate Smith 2, Cliona Coffey, Niamh Ní Chonchúir. Stunning OT win for understrength Lakers The Scotts Lakers were down bodies but that didn’t stop them from securing a brilliant over-time victory away to UCD Marian on Saturday. With Ronan Collins, Mark Sheehan and David Gleeson unavailable for selection, the Lakers headed for Dublin understrength but they came home with the spoils after a thrilling encounter that went right down to the wire. The game ebbed but never seemed to flow in the Lakers direction until the final seconds, but for perseverance alone they deserved the win. UCD had opened up an 11-point lead early in the fourth quarter with former Laker Toby Christensen to the fore. With

around seven minutes remaining, and the scoreboard reading 81-70, Braden Bell hit the first of two three pointers. When Jack O’Sullivan knocked down a basket to cut the gap to three, it was game on. The remainder of the quarter was a competitive affair but, with the clock winding down, the hosts still led by four (89-85). Then, a vital interception by Jamie O’Sullivan found Bell who fed Terion Moss to cut the gap to two with 11 seconds to go. The resultant inbound was brilliantly stolen by Oisin Spring before being picked up by O’Sullivan, and once again Moss finished to tie the game at 89. There were still almost six seconds on the clock but a late UCD effort did not yield anything and

the game went to overtime. With UCD Marian running up team fouls, the Lakers were able to make it to the line and Eoin Carroll, Moss and Paul Clarke pushed Brian Clarke’s side ahead when it mattered most. The final scoreline read UCD Marian 94 Scotts Lakers 99. The Lakers are on the road again this Sat-

urday as they travel to the SETU Arena in Waterford to play the Vikings.

District sides tee up Eamonn Fitzgerald was on hand to take in the action as East Kerry and Mid Kerry successfully navigated their respective Kerry SFC semi-finals As expected and predicted in last week’s edition, it is going to be East Kerry v Mid Kerry in the Kerry SFC final in Tralee on November 5. Throw-in will be at 3.30pm. With two divisional board teams in the final ineligible to play in the Munster and All-Ireland Club competitions, Dingle will represent Kerry as winners of the Club Championship. Meanwhile, the Kerry Intermediate and Junior finals have to be played to determine who will go into Munster in those grades. MID KERRY 3-10 | DINGLE 0-9 Dingle were trounced in Tralee, losing by 10 points to Mid Kerry. I expected Mid Kerry to prevail but not by such a wide margin. Dingle have not recovered from the loss of Barry Dan O’Sullivan who was injured from the throw-in against Spa some weeks ago. They have struggled at midfield since. They did well in the first half and led by seven points to four after 23 minutes. Then, right on half-time, Mid Kerry scored a fine goal at a crucial time. That goal by Cillian Burke put them in the driv-

ing seat to lead 1-6 to 0-7 at the break. Dingle scored two early points after the restart but then it all went wrong. Mid Kerry took over and Dingle did not score for the last 32 minutes. Of their nine points, they only scored one from play. That’s never a good sign. The sending off of Mikey Geaney on 46 minutes for a second yellow killed off their chances. They were just one point in arrears at that stage and they folded badly thereafter. They finished the game with just 13 players when Collingwood’s Mark O’Connor was also sent off in injury time on a straight red by referee Brendan Griffin (Clounmacon). Mid Kerry excelled in that second half and special credit must go to their splendid defence, and goalkeeper Seán Coffey. Nathan Breen and David Roche starred. Mid Kerry also won the midfield battle

with Seán O’Brien and Gavin Horan in control. Daire Cleary will be making strong claims for a starting place in the final. He scored 1-2 after replacing Fiachra Clifford, his Laune Rangers clubmate, in the 41st minute. Jack O’Connor also made his presence felt when he came on near the end as he scored their third goal. Mid Kerry started this year’s campaign slowly but have improved steadily. They will need to keep that improvement going if they hope to avoid losing two county finals in three years to the same opposition. They are learning, but have they learned enough to get revenge on East Kerry? EAST KERRY 1-16 | RATHMORE 1-10 Meanwhile, East Kerry had to settle for a six-point win on Sunday at the Fitzgerald Stadium. They did what everyone expected, qualifying for the final to defend their title. What many felt was that Rathmore would suffer a double-digit defeat, especially without the injured Paul Murphy? As expected, Mark Ryan was cleared to play after the red card he picked up at the very end of the match against Spa was rescinded. Andrew Moynihan made the long journey from Canada to help the Rathmore cause. In my view all the matches in this championship have been lacking in typical championship bite and this was also a lacklustre, tedious game with little to enthuse the spectators, except for two beautifully taken goals by David Clifford and by Brendan O’Keeffe.

Shane Ryan was keeping Rathmore in touch in the first half and they were just one point adrift in the 24th minute (5-4) when the maestro David Clifford slipped in behind his marker Brian Friel. The gap opened for him to hit the second most difficult shot for a goalkeeper to save, just inside the post and a foot above the ground. No blame to William Casey the Rathmore keeper, who delivered the majority of his kickouts to his teammates. Rathmore were just one goal behind at the break and could well have been level when Shane Ryan and Jack Sherwood got entangled in the small square. However, the umpires were right on the spot and Paul Hayes trusted their judgement. The game really went away from Rathmore after half-time when East Kerry shot over five points without reply to ease into a 1-9 to 0-4 lead. Darragh Roche really caught the eye, linking well with the Clifford brothers David (1-3, one point from a free) and Paudie (0-4, all from play). Donal O’Sullivan Down never really impressed, scoring just the one point from a mark. It was really when they were eight points down that Rathmore started to play their best. Brendan O’Keefe’s goal was a splendid effort. Going into a crowded defence, he blasted an unstoppable piledriver past the unsighted Brian Kelly. The goal came in second-half injury time, too late to bother Jerry O’Sullivan as he prepares his squad for the final, but some comfort for Rathmore who fought bravely to the end. O’Sullivan was able to run his bench early: Luke Crowley for clubmate Patrick Darcy,

Emmett O’Shea for Donal O’Sullivan, Cian Gammell for Dara O’Callaghan, Finbarr Murphy for Kieran Murphy, and Owen Fitzgerald for Chris O’Leary.

DUBLIN COUNTY FINAL

So, it’s East Kerry aiming to retain their title, just like Kilmacud Crokes, the All-Ireland Club champions, did on Sunday last by defeating Ballyboden St Enda’s 1-14 to 0-9. Of course, Raheny should have beaten Kilmacud in the semi-final, losing out on the penalty shootout. Man of the Match in the final was Paul Mannion and the highlight was a cracker of a goal by Galway star Shane Walsh, who soloed all of 60 metres to crash home an unstoppable shot. The win makes three-in-a-row for Kilmacud, the first three-in-a-row since St Vincent’s in the 60s and 70s. It is a clear indication of the demographic shifts in Dublin. The big growth areas for the GAA have been in the south side. That is quite a change from the Dublin I knew when the south side was the home of the swanky, trendy rugby and its much sought after social status. Paul Howard caricatured the snobbery via the mythical character Ross O’Carroll-Kelly and the proud mums presenting the Leinster Schools Rugby Cup in Lansdowne Road on St Patrick’s Day. Across town the culchies gathered for the Railway Cup finals.

EAST KERRY LADIES

Yer Man wasn’t on the terrace in the afternoon after his outburst here in this column recently. “I wouldn’t cross the road

to see a match with the so-called football they’re playing now. More like the worst aspects of basketball and soccer. Keep possession at all costs.” The crowd was so sparse, like all this year’s games, that I would have noticed him if he had turned up to eat his words. However, he should have attended the Kerry U17 ladies final earlier that morning. East Kerry LGFA had plenty to spare over St Kieran’s and it was was a far more enjoyable spectacle than the senior men’s game. St Kieran’s did find it very hard to assemble a team with minimal preparation in contrast to East Kerry who were so well prepared. There was a tour de force display by the multi-talented Leah McMahon. Of the five East Kerry goals the full forward scored two and gave the vital assists to her teammates to finish the other three. Her skills, balance, and vision transfer seamlessly between basketball and football. Seodhla Colleran was superb at corner back, making it a great day for the Colleran family in Fossa. Her brother Rian was a sub on the East Kerry team for their win over Rathmore. The ever-consistent Aoise O’Donoghue, daughter of Paud, the brilliant place-kicker who won several Kerry SFC titles with East Kerry in the Seán Counihan era, excelled. Her dad was unsarcastically silent on the sideline, no doubt gently humming ‘Deo Gratias’. Katie Doe played a star role in this win. St Kieran’s captain midfielder Amy Curtin and Keelin O’Sullivan sparked off a great second half fightback with two goals. However, when Kieran’s drew close, East Kerry finished in style.

PHOENIX FROM ASHES

The great Bobby Charlton has died at the age of 86. From the ashes of the Munich disaster, he led Manchester United to glory. They won the European in 1968, just 10 years later. He was the club’s record scorer until Wayne Rooney created a new record in 2017. He also won the 1966 World Cup with his brother Jack. Younger readers of this sports column may not know that Bobby played with Waterford City in 1976. Georgie Best and Ronnie March also ‘guested’ with Irish clubs in the twilights of their careers.

Tralee clubs feeling the heat ahead of playoff On Saturday another Tralee club will be joining neighbours Austin Stacks in the intermediate grade of Kerry football as Kerins O’Rahillys take on Na Gaeil in the senior relegation playoff. The match will take place in Austin Stack Park at 4.30pm. If they were to be relegated, it would mark a significant fall from grace for Rahillys who reached the Kerry SFC final as recently as 2021. They also claimed the Senior Club Championship title in 2022 before going on to win the Munster Club Championship and just about coming up short against Kilmacud Crokes in the All-Ireland semi-final. The club from Strand Road found the going tough in this year’s Club Championship, losing all three of their group games by at least ten points. Key forward Jack Savage returned to Ireland for the County Championship and they picked up a win against Shannon Rangers, but it wasn’t enough to qualify from a group that also contained Mid Kerry and Spa. Reaching the final would have automatically saved them from relegation but, in truth, that never looked very likely. For crosstown rivals Na Gaeil, Satur-

day’s playoff will be the last outing of their second season at senior level, and they will naturally be hoping survive and secure their status for a third consecutive year. They also struggled in the Club Championship, losing all three of their games against Spa, Kenmare Shamrocks and Templenoe. Some brief respite came via an unexpected victory over Dr Crokes in the Kerry SFC but their failure to advance from their group and make it all the way to the final means the prospect of returning to intermediate is now staring them in the face. The midfield battle between Rahillys pair David Moran and Tom Hoare and Na Gaeil duo Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor will be of critical importance. Can county men O’Connor and Barry dominate or will their former mentor Moran steer his side clear of danger? The final of the Junior Premier Championship also takes place this weekend. Listowel Emmets square off against Ballymac on Sunday at 2pm at Austin Stack Park. The semi-finals of the Novice Championship are both on Saturday at 3pm. Asdee play Lispole in Connolly Park and Scartaglen take on Duagh in Knocknagoshel. AROUND THE WORLD | NFL pundits torn

on ‘tush push’

| K-Pop group wear wrong

Rangers shirts

The female K-pop group STAYC were left a little red-faced at a recent concert in Dallas, Texas when two members took to the stage wearing vintage Glasgow Rangers football shirts. The South Korean singers were attempting to play to the home crowd by donning the colours of local sports teams and four of them got it right by turning up in Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Cowboys jerseys. However, the remaining two group members were off the mark with their Glasgow Rangers soccer shirts. It appears as though they mistook the old school adidas jerseys for those of the local baseball team, the Texas Rangers.

A simple but effective method of gaining valuable yards has led to a heated debate around whether or not the NFL should ban the play. The Philadelphia Eagles’ so-called ‘tush push’ (also known as the ‘brotherly shove’) is precisely what you might imagine; when the team is fourth and short and in need of a small gain to keep the chains moving, their quarterback Jalen Hurts lines up behind center Jason Kelce, and when the ball is snapped two other teammates push Hurts from behind. The unorthodox play, not too dissimilar to a maul you might see at the Rugby World Cup, has a remarkable success rate. Last season it worked 90% of the time and so far this season it has been even more deadly. Unsurprisingly, the ‘tush push’ is not popular outside of Philadelphia. Miami Dolphins journalist Joe Schad claimed it is “not a legitimate” football play. “It’s not how football was meant to be played. It’s also lame and can cause injuries. Nobody except Eagles fans will miss it once it’s banned in the off-season.” His comments came after the Eagles beat the Dolphins 31-17.

Donie Foley Barleymount. Fiona O’Donoghue Bridgefield. U15 NATIONAL TROPHY: Killarney Athletic 3 Herbertstown 4 (Jayden Hurley Ryan Kissane Finn O’Donnell). Our boys left limerick empty handed this evening after an epic battle with Herbertstown. Our boys started the better however it was the limerick side who took the lead from a corner. Our boys answered back when Jayden Hurley scored from a corner. Soon after it was 2-1 Athletic when Ryan Kissane hit a brilliant strike from outside the box into the top corner. However, the home side hit back from the penalty spot after a pretty soft penalty from our view point. HT 2-2. Athletic dominated the second half and had a couple of really good chances however the home side hit the front again against the run of play. Our didn’t drop the heads and with 5 mins to go Finn O’Donnell struck a great strike to bring us level. We pushed and pushed for a winner, but it finished 3-3. Extra time was needed again in the national cup and again, as we pushed on, we got caught on the counterattack to leave us 4-3 down in ET. We had a couple of good chances with the Herbertstown keeper making a few good saves and Jayden hit the post. However it was disappointment again for our lads on the road as they crashed out 4-3. A great game of football between two good sides and played in a great spirit. Best of luck to Herbertstown in the next round. Killarney Legion GAA SATURDAY MORNING ACADEMY: Last Saturday was the last day of the Killarney Legion Academy and thankfully all the heavy rains and winds of the week had subsided, and everyone enjoyed a lovely autumnal morning. The traditional graduation ceremony for our Under 10 players went ahead for the girls, but the boys were busy on tournament duty in Lewis Road so they will receive their graduation certificates in due course! A big thank you to all the boys and girls and thanks to all the parents for bringing the kids along each year. And a big thanks to all the Academy coaches who have helped out every Saturday all year. And as always, we urge all our members to keep an eye and ear open for any prospective youngsters living in the Killarney area who may be interested in joining our club. It's been well documented in recent years that there will be a downturn in playing numbers in the urban Killarney area in the future, so everyone is asked to be on their game when it comes to recruiting new members. U11 BOYS: It was a great end to the U11 football season yesterday playing in the Dr Crokes Blitz in perfect weather on Lewis Road. Dr. Crokes, Fossa, and Ballyvourney provided the opposition in what was a very well organised fun day out with great football being played. Our captains of the 2 teams for the tournament, Thomas Clarke and Sean Sharma, led from the front delivering motivational speeches and followed it up with some excellent football. Thanks to all the participating teams, especially the hosts Dr Crokes who provided good weather, good pitches, and a great day out for our boys. UNDER 15 BOYS: Our young U15 boys team never got going in Sundays East Kerry Division 1 final in Farranfore. To be fair though Firies played superbly and even though the team know that they are capable of better, they will hopefully learn from this experience. The team had a positive year reaching County League Division 2 Final as well so it’s imperative that they and the club look to progress in the years ahead. Full time Killarney Legion 0-4 Firies 2-18.

27.10.2023 SPORT NOTES last which was played in Derreen. This was a tense affair early on between these two teams who have become very accustomed to each other over the last few years. With both defences on top, scores were hard to come by but at half time Kilcummin were leading by two points 1-4 to 1-2. Kenmare’s first score came from the penalty spot, but Sean Doolan balanced the books when he slotted home a penalty of his own 20 minutes into the game. In the second half both teams traded points with Aaron Buckley, Sean Doolan and Sean Maher accounting for Kilcummin scores, but the killer blow was delivered by Bobby Gallivan when he fisted a cross to the Kenmare net after great work by Luke Daly. After that the Kilcummin defence marshalled by the outstanding Dara Stack kept the opposition at bay and when the final whistle blew there were scenes of great joy and some relief that this young team had at last got the reward their efforts deserved. Well done to the entire panel and mentors David Kearney, Tommy Brosnan, Paul O’Donoghue and Kieran O’Donoghue. grounds on Sunday. After a cagey start, with only one score in the first 10 minutes, Kenmare took the lead with a well struck penalty from Jack Tangney. Kilcummin responded well, with a scoring run of 1–3, with Sean Doolan burying a penalty for his side. Jack O’Sullivan fisted over a much-needed point for Kenmare, but they still went in 2 points down, with defences well on top. The teams shared the opening 4 points of the second half, before Kilcummin grabbed a crucial second goal. Luke Daly making the surging run that opened up the opportunity, before Gallivan surged in the far post to fist home. Two points from Zack O’Shea kept Kenmare in the game, but full back Sean Maher put Kilcummin back ahead by 4, despite suffering from cramp. Neal O’Shea’s late point brought the deficit back to three, but Kilcummin’s defence held firm, and their victory was confirmed. Afterwards, East Kerry Assistant PRO Michael O’Mahony presented the Brendan Cronin Perpetual Cup to winning captain Keelan O’Shea. Well done to Kilcummin on the win, and commiserations to Kenmare on the result. Ger Casey also made the trip to Barcelona last week to take part in the Pairs event. PAUL O’SULLIVAN MEMORIAL SCRATCH CUP: Following the effect of the recent weather on the Castleisland course we have agreed to host this event now next Monday for the County Board. tion and being an angler of some renown, he has often featured in the prizes on our competitions throughout the years. The O’Callaghan family were out in force for the annual dinner, which they have attended for many years and on the announcement of the accolade they assisted John in his celebration for the evening. Kilgobnet National School TABLE QUIZ: Kilgobnet National School is holding a fundraising table quiz at The Inn Between Bar, Beaufort, on Friday, 10th November, at 7.30pm. Maura O’Connor, Principal of Kilgobnet National School, said, “Last year’s table quiz was an incredible success with overwhelming support, both from sponsors and from the large crowd that attended on the night. The money that was raised went towards the completion of a community playground at the school, and we were thrilled when the playground opened in June. It has been a fantastic addition to our school and community. We are most

fortunate to have such an active and interested Parents Association in Kilgobnet NS and they always go above and beyond in their efforts to support our school. Ongoing fundraising is important as it benefits the children in the school, especially as costs in schools have increased in recent times. We hope everyone has a fantastic night and enjoys the quiz!”.
