Fears St Mary of the Angels could be closed down A Kerry TD is calling for St Mary ‘s of the Angels to be redeveloped to safeguard its long-term future. Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae raised the issue in the Dail this week after being disappointed that not enough funding was allocated to the care facility in last week’s budget. He fears that the education centre for people with special needs will be eventually closed by government departments.

He said: “As you are well aware we have a lack of residential care places for people with disabilities in Kerry, there was some mention in the Budget that there would be 90 new centres opened. “We have a centre for many years in Kerry in Whitefield Beaufort known as St. Mary of the Angels, a place that was donated

by the Doyle family and an awful lot of fund raising has gone on through the years to help this place develop and keep going, but sadly now it is being closed by stealth and as a patient dies that bed is being closed down and is not being used anymore. I am asking that St Mary of the Angels is redeveloped, there is a lot against dormitory style beds and I am asking for new

Green light for Pretty Polly college development Kerry Educational and Training Board has been given the green light to convert the old Pretty Polly site into a college campus. The former factory has been idle since 2009. Last November it was announced that the Kerry County Council-owned property was to be converted into a training and education centre that could

be home to home to up to 4,000 students. This week, local TD Brendan Griffin asked his Fine Gael colleague Simon Harris for an update on the project. The Minister for Higher Education said: “The Kerry ETB has been successful under the strategic infrastructure upgrade fund for two proposals including the re-

furbishment and upgrade of the Listowel campus and provision of additional accommodation at its campus in Tralee.” It is understood that funding to the tune of €20 million will available to Kerry ETB across all its campuses. Kerry County Council has given an undertaking to build social houses on parts of the Pretty Polly site too.

separate units to be built on the grounds, there is acres of land there and the peace and tranquillity of the place, the expertise of the care workers that are working there, couldn’t be touched anywhere else, it has been handed down to them back over the generations. “There is a need for a place like this, where there are pools and therapies of all types to be had there and it’s being closed by stealth. “I am asking that Whitefield in Beaufort be developed and make it a state of the art place because as I said in the first place it was donated by the Doyle and a whole lot of voluntary work has gone on and fund raising has gone on over the years, we can’t let that place close down.”

Family and friends gather to celebrate Maureen Philips' 100th birthday in Currans on Sunday

Maureen Phillips celebrates 100th birthday in Currans

Great joy and happiness was shared after mass on October 15 in Currans village, when Maureen Phillips participated in the planting of a tree to celebrate and honour her 100th birthday. Maureen, of Ardcrone, Currans, was accompanied by her daughter Joan, son-inlaw Peter, family, friends and neighbours. “The beautiful Weeping Willow tree was kindly provided by Hickey’s Nurseries, and planted by Liam Hickey and Maureen’s daughter Joan. It was blessed by Fr. Buckley.” “This is the second time a tree has been planted in Currans for a similar celebration, which was planted for the late

Johnny Murphy,” said her friend Mary Brosnan. “Maureen is an inspiration to all of us and it was a privilege for those who gathered, to be part of the ceremony. We wish Maureen continued good health and happiness for many more years to come. “Sincere thanks to all who helped on the day and gathered for this special ceremony.”

National Osteoporosis Day Today, Friday October 20 is National Osteoporosis Day. Sam Treharne of Treharne Physiotherapy in Ballycasheen gave the Killarney Advertiser an insight into Osteoporosis. He says: “Osteoporosis is often a shocking diagnosis as the overwhelming majority of people will not know they have osteoporosis until they have a fracture or have a scan organised by their GP.” The time around being diagnosed is often a distressing and worrying time, questions like: - How did this happen? - Are things going to get worse? - What did I do wrong? Then when you combine low bone density with a fall the result can be dramatic with less than half those who survive a hip fracture regaining their previous level of function.

However there is plenty that you can do to help reduce your chance of injury and even improve your bone density.

HEAVY WEIGHT TRAINING

Weight lifting doesn’t just strengthen your muscles, but also your bones and your mind. In trials of people with osteoporosis lifting ‘HEAVY’ weights over 9-12 months their confidence, falls risk and even their bone density improved. Speak to a chartered physiotherapist on what is appropriate to start.

DIET

Making sure you a getting all your nutrients through a varied healthy diet. The main minerals to keep an eye on are your vitamin D and calcium. Your G.P will be able to make sure these levels are within normal and range and advise on supplementation when appropriate. Also when you are weight training, your

protein intake is also extremely important making sure you are hitting the appropriate amount for your body size. Protein can also make you feel fuller for longer helping with weight loss.

SMOKING AND ALCOHOL

Unfortunately smoking and excessive alcohol plays a significant role in the bodies ability to repair and recover. Reducing these to nil can have a significant impact on your muscle mass and bone density.

SLEEP

Your body recovers and regenerates overnight. So getting seven or more hours sleep consistently is a great start to ensure you’re allowing your body to heal and recover. Osteoporosis can be reversed to a certain degree and we have had significant improvement in our clients bone density through diet, medication and heavy weight training at Activate Masters programme.

Rotary Club celebrates in style The Killarney Rotary Club held their Annual Afternoon Tea at the Great Southern Killarney on Saturday last. The dining room was full to capacity. “We had four other Rotary Clubs who attended to support this event. Rotarians from Cork, Dingle, Limerick and Tralee Rotary Clubs all enjoyed themselves after making the journey to Killarney. Many other groups have attended yearin-year-out since it began in 2008 so Rotary Killarney must be doing something right,” said Ciara Irwin. “There were a few new faces this year and hopefully they will all return again.” The afternoon started with a drinks reception in the foyer. Everybody was in great form gathering with friends and family members. The guests were entertained on the piano by Conn and by a local group of five children who recently represented Kerry at the National Community Games Final in the ballad singing finals. The current Rotary President Mr. Barry

Murphy addressed the guests and explained what Rotary does both in the local community and through Rotary internationally. “He told everybody about Rotary Killarney celebrating 40 years in Killarney. He also thanked the team at the Great Southern for their wonderful service on

the day. He mentioned the beneficiaries of the event,” added Ciara. Barry said: “It is wonderful to be associated with such an event, it flowed from start to finish in a non-stop relaxed atmosphere. Well organised, well attended, very fashionable, very sociable and in aid of two worthy causes.”

The Night Nurses service is a very important part of the Irish Cancer Society. They provide night-time care for patients and families in their own home from 6pm to 7am. The Fuchsia Ward at Killarney Community Hospital provides care for older people in need of a high level of advanced care for dementia. “Thank you to all here today for supporting such deserving services in our community. Thank you to Ciara and the team, for all your hard work, it is much appreciate,” added Barry. Mr. Michael Jacobi, Managing Director of the Hayfield Family Collection congratulated the Killarney Club on reaching 40 years and he wished them well into the future. Guests were invited to visit Fredericks Restaurant, newest addition to the Great Southern afterwards. The fashion show included clothes from Scarlett Boutique (Scotts Street, Killarney). Clodagh Irwin Foley co-ordinated the fashion show again this year with models Abigail, Aggie, Monika, Sherry and Siofra.

‘Biobus’ to visit Killarney as part of tour of Ireland to reduce reliance on fossil fuel A first of its kind, interactive ‘Biobus’ designed to show people how to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels in everyday life, has embarked on a five-week journey of Ireland, calling at College Square, Killarney, from 8.30am-12.30pm, on October 27. The ‘Biobus’ was specially developed by BiOrbic. The Bioeconomy SFI Research Centre is Ireland’s national bioeconomy research centre, a national collaboration of researchers from 12 of Ireland’s universities working with industry and other stakeholders, focused on the development of a sustainable, circular bioeconomy. The national Biobus tour launched as part of this year’s Bioeconomy Ireland Week. The tours will cover 36 locations including Gaeltacht communities, visiting every county and inviting schools, community groups and individuals to learn about the bioeconomy and how local companies are already

developing innovative bio-based products. The bus will be powered by 100% renewable plant waste matter provided by Irish company Certa. Prof Kevin O’Connor, Director of BiOrbic explains what visitors to the Biobus can expect: “The Biobus explores just how much we rely on fossil fuels and presents examples of everyday bio-based products, with many of these examples coming from home-grown Irish companies or Irish research projects, including Kerry-based Seabody Cosmetics. “What may be shocking to Biobus visitors is how our reliance on fossil fuels

goes much further than just energy, fuel and plastic. Almost every modern-day product contains some element of petrochemicals, which is unsustainable. The bioeconomy provides what society needs from renewable, bio-based sources such as plants, animals and microbes. “We are at the early stages of a bio-revolution, where we will transition from a dependence on fossil resources to a more sustainable and balanced circular bioeconomy. Ireland is particularly well

placed to be a leader in this space. We already have Agri-food and Marine industries of global significance as well as a profile of large companies and SMEs driving innovation with sustainability to the fore” As well as reducing waste through the production of biodegradable materials, the bioeconomy approach can help meet Ireland’s climate targets by establishing a sustainable, circular and environmentally friendly economy.

Order of Malta training day at Killarney Racecourse The Killarney unit of the Order of Malta held a regional training event in partnership with Horse Racing Ireland last Saturday.

A total of 33 staff members celebrated long-service at the Killarney Great Southern and the Killarney Royal this week

Long Service Celebration at Great Southern and Killarney Royal

The event was held in the Killarney racecourse and brought together nine Order of Malta units from around the southwest region. (Killarney, Cork, Carrigaline, Shannon, Limerick, Cashel, Nenagh, Clonmel and Thurles). There were over 60 members who worked in teams to treat ten different simulated patients. The teams treated

many different injuries, from spinal injuries and head injuries to chest pain and a simulated cardiac arrest. The training day allowed all members to practice their lifesaving skills and ensure they can provide the highest level of care for the jockeys and the public on race days in Killarney and across the Southwest. The teams partnered with local doctors, Dr Kevin Brennan, Dr Rosemary Kelleher and Dr Adrian McGoldrick from the Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board.

Stalwarts of the tourism industry in Killarney, Great Southern and Killarney Royal, celebrated their long-term team members with a gourmet dinner in Frederick's at Great Southern Killarney. The event was held for all team members with over 10 years of service, and was hosted by Michael Jacobi, Managing Director, Hayfield Family Collection and Mark Scally, Financial Controller, Hayfield Family Collection. A total of 33 employees have over 10 years of service across the two hotels with an incredible 700 years of service between them. The longest serving staff member in either hotel is John Fitzgerald with over 54 years of dedicated service.

“It is an absolute pleasure for us to celebrate our long term staff members. As a company we believe that our Family Tree is the Foundation of our Success. Each team member is a valued part of our work family and our longest serving members are the foundation of that. We are incredibly proud to work alongside these colleagues as we continue to provide high standards of service and warm welcomes for our guests and the local community,” said Mr Jacobi.

Golf enthusiasts head for twin town in Arizona Killarney Town Twinning Association has had a busy year with visits and contacts from all our twin towns in Europe and sister cities in America. The season will finish next week when Killarney representatives move will visit Scottsdale in Arizona in what is the return leg of the Americans’ visit earlier this year when the Junior section of Killarney Golf club Killarney hosted students from Arizona. In return the students will now get to play some courses in Scottsdale - one of the golfing capitals of the world. “Killarney Town Twinning Association would like to thank the junior committee

in Killarney for their involvement in what is a huge opportunity for the students as they get to play with students who represent colleges in the area of Scottsdale,” said chairperson Sean Counihan. “They will also get the chance to visit the Grand Canyon and visit City Hall. We are grateful to Shane Horgan junior officer and Meg Dalton marketing manager at Killarney Golf. “We believe in the Killarney Town Twinning Association that our cultural sporting and people exchanges are good for Killarney. “We hope in future to engage with our own clubs, schools and citizens to encourage them to visit our twin towns.”

Killarney Salmon and Trout Angling Club presented the inaugural Jeremy O’Neill Memorial Shield to Angler of the Year for 2023 to Steve Campbell. Club Chairman DJ O’Riordan and members of the O'Neill family presented the shield outside their iconic premises on Plunkett Street. It is a milestone year for Sheahan’s Pharmacy on Main Street.

This family-run business opened its doors on 34 Main Street in 1953 and for the past 70 years, it has provided the people of the town with all of their pharmaceutical needs, caring for their health and wellbeing in the process. “My grandad Donal, who was known as Donie, was the first generation of the family to found the pharmacy business in Killarney,” says William, who is the latest of the Sheahan’s to run the business. “He moved from Listowel to Killarney in order to take up a job as the Pharmacist at the District and Saint Columbanus’s Community Hospitals where he then met my grandmother Carmel (née Dowling) and the rest as they say is history. “They lived over the pharmacy for many years where both he and Carmel operated the pharmacy business. “Simpler times but many called it a South Doc before it’s time. People would knock on their door in the middle of the night or on a Sunday and Donie always looked after them. My Dad Liam continued this tradition having worked with Donie for many years by offering exceptional care to both locals and tourist alike”. A recent refit at the pharmacy now mean’s that that Sheahan’s offers an expanded range of products. “We have a comprehensive selection of over-the-counter, vitamins, first aid, footcare, dental, haircare, fragrances, cosmetics, electrical and much more now available in addition to all the dis-

pensing services we’ve always offered. We have also expanded our consultation room allowing us to provide greater services at the pharmacy such as vaccinations,” added William. “We have a great team here some of whom have been with us for over 30 years. “There are three experienced pharmacists, a pharmaceutical assistant, four technicians and eight support staff. They’re on hand to help our customers from 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and from 11am to 1pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays with expanded hours during the summer months.” William would also like to thank their loyal customers for their support over the decades. “We’re planning a week of celebrations to mark our 70th year and we’ll be giving away lots of freebies that week,” “Starting on the morning of October 24, we’ll have different suppliers coming in every morning to showcase and educate customers on their products. “We’ll be giving away hampers each day and in addition to this we have 70 bags with products and samples worth €30 to €40 each which will be given to customers who call in across the entire week! Finally, we will be hosting a coffee morning in aid of the Palliative Care Unit at UHK on the morning on October 27 to celebrate our recent refit and milestone. All are welcome.”

The Killarney Coffee Cup scheme shortlisted for National award The Killarney Park and The Ross have been announced as among finalists in this year’s individual Pakman Award categories. Winners will be announced at a ceremony in The Shelbourne Hotel on Thursday October 26. The Pakman Awards are Ireland’s leading national environmental awards which recognise and celebrate excellence in recycling and waste management across businesses, organisations and community groups. This year’s

awards will also see a new individual category, ESG Leader, announced on the night. The Killarney Park and The Ross has been nominated for the Community Recycling Initiative, the Environmental Education and Awareness Initiative and Business Recycling Champion Award and the Innovation in Waste Resource

Products or Service Award. The Killarney Park and The Ross set up a grassroots project called The Killarney Coffee Cup Project with the goal of eliminating single use coffee cups from Killarney town centre. This initiative has resulted in the elimination of almost 70,000 cups. This project endeavours to change behaviours and perceptions towards single use items and strives to promote a beneficial transition to a cir-

cular economy. “We received an incredible number of strong entries this year and I am delighted to announce this groundbreaking initiative among those shortlisted for the 2023 Pakman Awards. The awards recognise businesses, organisations and community initiatives that represent a clear commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility in waste management,” said Repak CEO, Séamus Clancy. “We’re excited to showcase the hard work of all businesses, organisations, and individuals who are paving the way for a more sustainable future for Ireland. We look forward to welcoming all finalists to the Pakman Awards.”

Lissivigeen school says ‘Bonjour’ to French Children in fourth, fifth and sixth classes at Lissivigeen National School have been broadening their linguistic horizons through learning French in recent weeks. It’s all thanks to a Department of Education programme called ‘Say Yes To Languages’. The programme aims to give children in the senior classes a ‘taster’ of a modern European language in school time over eight weekly one-hour sessions. They learn the language through an active approach which includes games,

video, drama, music, French songs and rhymes. In addition to learning greetings, numbers, colours, body parts, days of the week in French, the children also become aware of the geography and culture of France, thereby linking in with many other subject areas of the primary school curriculum. Furthermore, the ‘Say Yes To Languages’ programme also aims to raise the children’s awareness of other languages and cultures in their surroundings, which is a very constructive means of awakening their curiosity and heightening their acceptance and inclusion of the many

Randles Hotel finalist in the 2023 SEAI Energy Awards Randles Hotel has been announced as a finalist in Sustainable Energy of Ireland Authority’s Energy Awards for 2023. Randles Hotel in Killarney is a historic 116-year-old building. The owner's vision and commitment to the sustainability plan drove the transition to renewable energy systems. The projects include installing heat pumps, solar panels, LED lighting, a pool cover, upgraded air conditioning and an energy monitoring system. Grant aid from SEAI through the Better Energy Communities (BEC) scheme facilitated the successful implementation of the projects. These measures resulted in significant cost savings of 50%, energy usage savings of 55%, and carbon savings of 55%. The transition to energy-efficient

systems made the business leaner and encouraged staff to embrace sustainability. The improvements allowed the hotel to employ additional staff, enhancing overall operations. “Each year, we see an ever-increasing standard in the SEAI Energy Awards for sustainability, highlighting the emergence of exciting new sustainable energy solutions from businesses across the country. It’s more important than ever for Ireland to have role models who exhibit the highest levels of drive and innovation, and so I commend this year's nominees, whose dedication serves as a source of inspiration to others,” said William Walsh, CEO of SEAI. The winners of each category will be revealed at a special awards ceremony taking place on November 16.

Kayne’s delights with new Early Bird Menu

Mike O'Shea, Chairperson of Kerry Comhaltas, Bernard O Sullivan Bainisteoir Comhaltas Ceoltoiri, Mike and Sheila Carroll joined by members of Kilcummin Comhaltas at their 50th Celebratory Night.

50 years celebrated by Kilcummin Comhaltas Young and old gathered at the Killarney Heights hotel last Saturday night to celebrate all things good about Kilcummin Comhaltas.

The night was in the planning since last March by a dedicated committee to ensure all aspects of the evening were planned to perfection. Gathering firstly for a drinks reception the mood was buoyant in anticipation of the celebratory night. The recent successes of the branch adorned a table at the centre of the venue and was a reflection of the current and past successes of the branch. Shane O'Callaghan, chairperson of Kilcummin Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann reminded all present that the hard work and dedication of branch officers, dancers, singers, musicians and coaches/ trainers involved over the last 50 years is the reason why the branch has not just survived, but thrived over that period. Indeed, he also highlighted the friendships and sense of community that has been a mainstay of the organisation since it’s inception. We were delighted to be joined on the night by Bernard O'Sullivan, Bainisteoir

Comhaltas Ceoltoiri. He spoke highly of the rich history of Kilcummin CCE branch but also made a very special presentation to the family of the late Stephen Carroll. Stephen Carroll was tragically killed in an accident in 2010. Stephen was a fourtime champion melodeon player. The 12-15 cup for that competition was retired some years ago out of respect for Stephen. Bernard presented the cup to Stephen’s parents, Mike andSheila Carroll – a fitting tribute and acknowledgment of the tragic loss of the Carroll family and Stephen’s contribution to Comhlatas during his life. A beautiful meal was enjoyed by all, followed by music from the inimitable Neilly O’Connor. Space on the dance floor was at a premium all night with highlights including a well contested Siege of Ennis. Set dancing and the brush dance were also on display. The night finished with a “trad disco” with classic traditional themes in line with the tone of the night.

Going out for dinner is always a treat, but even more so when you bag a great early bird offer. As the evenings start to close in, this latest offering from Kayne’s is sure to brighten up your evenings this winter. Boasting a relaxed yet charming dining experience, Kayne’s Bar and Brasserie is set to serve up a range of delectable dishes for diners. Enjoy an early evening set menu at the popular Killarney eatery, from 4pm – 6pm, Monday – Thursday. The hotel’s new Executive Head Chef Carolyn Clancy-Foley brings a wealth of experience to the role and has already created mouthwatering new lunch and dinner menus and is now looking forward to customers sampling the early bird, with more offerings in the pipeline. The early bird menu at Kayne’s will be available Monday – Thursdays between 4pm & 6pm. Opt for 2 courses for €26 or

“Kerry Airport is very pleased with how the 2023 Summer season (May to Sept) has performed with a 15% increase in passenger numbers. The continuing support of our Ryanair destinations and the introduction of a new seasonal Chalair service to Brittany, France contributed to the positive figures. We are well on the way to exceeding the passenger numbers for 2022 which finished at 356,141 and represented a 96.3% recovery from the pre-Covid highs of 2019."

Killarney is looking great for awards ceremony There was double cause for celebration at the presentation of prizes for this year’s Killarney Looking Good Awards as the stunning trophy for being deemed Ireland’s tidiest large town, in the national Tidy Towns competition, was also on display. There were 26 individual category award winners at the Looking Good ceremony which took place in the Killarney Plaza Hotel on Monday night and, in addition, seven highly commended awards were presented as well as two special awards and the coveted overall prize. This year the top award was scooped by the residents of Holy Cross Gardens, off Rock Road, who also received the Fr Michael Murphy Memorial Pride of Place Award which was presented by the late Tidy Towns champion’s brother, Bishop Emeritus Dr Bill Murphy. The competition adjudicators said Holy Cross Gardens was immaculately presented and no effort is spared by the residents and all involved in presenting this lovely area in the best possible light. “This is very much in keeping with the approach favoured by the late great Fr Michael Murphy who always supported and promoted community spirit,” the judges said. Another special award presented on the night was the Yvonne Quill Memorial

Volunteer of the Year accolade which is dedicated to the long-time driving force behind the Killarney Looking Good Competition and the Tidy Towns project who passed away in 2022. The winners were Mary and Larry Schrall who have retired to Killarney from the US and were hailed as an outstanding example of the difference volunteers can make in the community. The adjudicators remarked: “They are passionate in their approach to ensuring Killarney is looking good. They are always at the ready to don the yellow bibs and roll up their sleeves and, in the true spirit of the wonderful Yvonne Quill, they are prepared to lead by example.” A total of €5,000 worth of prizes was given away in this year’s competition which was sponsored by MD O’Shea & Sons and O’Mahony Media. Other prizewinners on the night included Carmel and James Cahill, Three Oaks, Ballycasheen who won the best private residence award, Mike and Maura O’Sul-

This year the Conservation Rangers will present a series of events, beginning on Saturday morning at 7.30am with ‘Deer Watch’ in Knockreer Estate. It will be presented by well-known Conservation Ranger Padruig ‘Brac’ O’Sullivan. He will also present the walk on Sunday morning, meeting both mornings at Knockreer front gate at 7.30am. - opposite St. Mary’s Cathedral. Padruig’s informative walks are always very popular. Autumn - the highlight of the nature calendar in Killarney National Park, in particular the month of October, is considered the most amazing time to observe the Irish Red Deer activity during the annual rutting season. The audible bellows and tribal behaviour is fascinating. The rich colours of Autumn, the clear crisp air of the mornings and shadows of evening light make the park so spectacular. Saturday will feature the annual Paudie

‘The Monarch’ - one of the largest upland stags in Ireland. He has 20 points on his antlers. During the annual rutting season - predominately during the month of October in Killarney National Park – the male stag becomes very vocal and their bellowing can be heard echoing throughout the valleys and mountains. The stag will guard his territory fiercely to hold onto his hinds, while warning away the stiff competition. 100 Years of Housing Crisis Without End 100 Bliain de Thithíocht Géarchéim gan Deireadh / 100 Years of Housing - Crisis Without End - Written and directed by Paul Webster, this feature documentary is a decade-by-decade look at how Irish housing issues have been tackled since the birth of the Irish state and where it all went so wrong. Ireland was born in a housing crisis and it has never gone away. Every government and generation has had to contend with this same issue. 100 Bliain de Thithíocht - Géarchéim gan Deireadh draws a line from the birth of the state to the crisis we find ourselves in today. This film explores the ideas that worked and the ones that were disastrous, painting a picture of how we lost our way and

how we can fix the current crisis. It’s largely forgotten now, but one of the key issues driving the Irish revolutionaries during the War of Independence was the housing question. Once the civil war was over, the former revolutionaries had to figure out how they would address the desperate housing situation. Now for the first time ever, the one-hundredyear history of housing in Ireland is laid out in this fascinating documentary that looks at the big housing stories of each decade up to 2023 and attempts to pinpoint the seeds of our current situation. This documentary delves deep into the housing concepts that have shaped the country we live in. A host of historians, architects, planners and thinkers have been carefully selected to give new insight into this living

history that couldn’t be more relevant today. As well as this, we hear from the people who lived in the iconic developments that make up this history. This rich archive is presented in a new light and includes revealing and heartening insights from real people throughout the decades, building a picture of how housing policies affected ordinary people. As well as this, a line-up of the great thinkers on the topic are assembled to explain their ideas for the future of housing in Ireland. 100 Bliain de Thithíocht - Wednesday, 25 October on TG4 at 9.30pm

“You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!” Probably one of the best movie lines in history from the 1969 heist movie ‘The Italian Job’, where charismatic thief Charlie Croker, played by Michael Caine, pulls of the heist of the century in Turin, Italy – your movie pick for the weekend. After nearly seven decades in Hollywood, Michael Caine has announced that his acting career has come to an end with over 100 movie credits to his name such as Alfie 1966, Get Carter 1971, A Bridge To Far 1977, The Dark Knight 2008 and Kingsman 2015. The 90-year-old actor revealed the news in an interview this week where he highlighted the moment, he decided it was time to retire. "I keep saying I'm going to retire," Caine said. "Well, I am now." His latest movie "The Great Escaper," where he stars as a man who escapes from his care home to attend the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings, will be his last project. Interesting fact: Madness released a sing in 1984 called ‘My name is Michael Caine’, celebrating the actor. However, Michael Caine’s original name was Maurice Joseph Micklewhite, Jr. He took his screen name from the 1954 film The Caine Mutiny.

Dublin Airport may exceed 32m passenger ‘cap’ Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) expresses fears that the annual passenger cap of 32m will be breached by the end of the year and has opened talks with airlines over an increase in passenger numbers that is taking it close to the 32 million annual cap that previously led to planning complications. DAA has reported more than 25 million

passengers in the first nine months of 2023, as travel returns to levels not seen since before the coronavirus shutdown. The cap was imposed by planners when they approved the airport’s second terminal. The concern is whether a breach spurs any action by objectors or planners, although planners appeared to accept DAA’s explanations after the overall number of passengers in 2019 exceeded 32 million.

Storm Babet hits Cork: homes and businesses flooded During Storm Babet hundreds of homes and businesses were flooded after parts of Co Cork got more than a month's rainfall in just 24 hours. Midleton was one of the worst hit as premises were swamped and the main street was impassable. Cork County Council reported that over 100 properties were flooded in the town. Cork County Council staff also dealt with

flooding at several towns and villages in the north and east of the county. The council reported that properties in Whitegate, Rathcormac, Glandore, Ringaskiddy, Carrigaline, Raffeen, Halfway and Casteltownbere were also flooded. Killeagh in east Cork has also been badly affected, along with Youghal. Homes were also evacuated by Cork City Council and Cork City Fire Service. Several roads in Ballyvolane, Blarney, Carrigrohane, and Tower were impassible.

Dáil passes motion calling for humanitarian access to Gaza The Dáil passed a motion this week humanitaricalling for unimpeded humanitari an access to meet the urgent needs of all civilians in Gaza. The motion stressed that Israel's right to defend itself from attack must be in line with international law. It also backed the UN call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and ex ex-

pressed alarm at the rising death toll and displacement of citizens in Gaza. The motion said that the taking of hostages, including children and the elderly, was unconscionable and called for their immediate and unconditional release. The motion was passed by 121 votes to 14, but its wording was not unanimously agreed.

Patrick Kielty's turbulent Graham Hill's Triple Crown start as the Late Late host prizes up for auction Graham Hill is still the only driver ever to achieve motor racing’s unofficial Triple Crown by winning at Monaco, Indianapolis and Le Mans. Now, his prizes from each of those victories will go under the hammer next month. The collection of 59 items is included in RM Sotheby’s London sale, on November

4 and is described as an “unrepeatable opportunity to acquire significant and extremely rare items with perfect provenance.” Damon Hill, son of Graham Hill, along with Nico Rosberg, is one of two sons of a Formula One World Champion to also win the F1 title with Damon winning in 1996 with eight wins.

Late Late Show viewer figures continue to tumble from their height of host Patrick Kielty’s debut night of 830,000, five shows in, with the most recent airing of the longest running live talk show having an average audience of 455,000 tuning in. This marks the lowest average audience since the show started with Patrick Kielty in the hot seat.

The October 6th show saw a minor bump in viewership for the Country Music Special, when 548,000 people tuned in. However, the downward trend resumed the following weekend. RTÉ said the Late Late Show remains the

“most watched programme on Friday nights” with an average audience of 455,000. On RTÉ Player, the show has generated 34,000 streams to date, while across RTÉ social media there were 246,691 interactions over the weekend.

Over 400 people attend motor club charity event Over 400 people attended a special event in Killarney Racecourse on Saturday evening to raise funds for the Jack and Jill Foundation. Organised by Killarney and District Motor Club’s new youth forum called KDMC2, the night celebrated Prodrive’s connection with the Rally of the Lakes. A selection of the British firm's cars including several Rally of the Lakes event-winning Subarus and BMWs were on display outside Killarney Racecourse all day Saturday ahead of a question and answers session with star drivers on the main stage later that evening. Stars included 2003 World Rally Championship-winning co-driver Phil Mills who spoke about his early career and his first visit to Killarney 40 years ago. Under the watchful eye of MC Alan ‘Plum’ Tyndal, the voice of the famous RPM Motorsport television programmes, other

drivers like Kenny McKinstry, Eugene Donnelly, Gary Jennings, Denis Cronin, and Alastair Fisher shared their stories of their times in Killarney. Former WRC co-driver and local man Paul

Nagle spoke about his early memories of Prodrive cars competing in Killarney and recalled how the late Bertie Fisher recorded the first sub-ten minute time on Moll’s Gap in a Prodrive-built Subaru in

20.10.2023 the mid-1990s. Siobhan Reen, the local Jack and Jill Foundation nurse, spoke about the great work that organisation does too. The night was not all about the past either, KDMC2 is all about fostering youth within the club and several newcomers gave an insight into the future of the sport. They included club member Meabh Griffin, better known for her volunteer work within the club, who has recently taken up co-driving and Galway’s Aoife Raftery, who is a member of the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy and the first Irish woman to commit to the FIA European Rally Championship since Rosemary Smith 50 years ago. “What a fantastic night with a huge crowd turning up in the end to see some of the most valuable and spectacular Prodrive Subaru and BMW WRC and Group A rally cars in the world,” said Killarney and District Motor Club’s chairman Thomas Randles. “We must congratulate our club vice chairman Mike O’Shea and all the KDMC members involved but especially Mike for the massive effort he put into getting all these drivers and cars down to Killarney this weekend. It was an extraordinary achievement and it will be hard to match but I know in KDMC it will happen again. The positive feedback is brilliant for our club.”

Community College KNOW YOUR RIGHTS Applying for Local Junior cert results Authority/Social Housing Local authorities are the main providers of social housing for people who cannot afford to buy a home or rent accommodation privately.

Therapy dog Jet and Brian O Connell.

Rents are based on the household’s ability to pay. Approved housing bodies (AHBs) also provide social housing for people who cannot afford to buy their own home. These organisations are sometimes called housing associations or housing co-operatives. You can only apply to one housing authority. In general, you must already be living in the area covered by that housing authority or have a local connection with the area – though a housing authority may agree to waive this requirement You will only be considered for social housing if your household income is less than the threshold that applies in the housing authority’s area. If your current mortgage is unsustainable, this will be taken into consideration in assessing your need for social housing. How do I qualify for social housing supports? In order to qualify, you must be eligible for social housing and you must be in need of social housing. The housing authority will assess your eligibility first. If you are eligible, it will then assess if you need social housing. If you are a foreign national, you must have a legal right to remain in the State on a long-term basis. To be regarded as eligible for social housing you must satisfy the income criteria. You must also show that you do not have suitable alternative accommodation.

Laura Bradley, Grace Foley, Aisling O Connor, Rebecca McCarthy.

Aisling O Connor, principal Stella Loughnane and Lara Bradley.

What proof of income is required? The documents you need differ depending on whether you are employed, self-employed or getting a social welfare payment. If you are getting a social welfare payment, you will need a statement from the Department of Social Protection detailing all your social welfare payments over the previous 12 months. If you are self-employed, you will need to provide at least two years’ accounts with an auditor’s report, and a notice of assessment and/or a self-assessment acknowledgement letter for the previous 12 months. If you are employed, you will need evidence of your income for the previous 12 months. What does the local authority consider to be alternative accommodation? You will be considered as having alternative accommodation if you or a member of your household has property that you could reasonably be expected to use to meet your housing needs. This property will be considered alternative accom-

modation if you could live in it, or sell it and use the money to pay for suitable accommodation. Alternative property includes property you own abroad, or property that you are renting out. Under residential tenancies legislation you can terminate the tenancy if your household needs the property to live in. Can I choose where I want to live? You can specify up to three areas where you would choose to live. At least one of them must be in the area administered by the housing authority that you apply to (its functional area) and the others must be either in that functional area or within the same county. If you do not live in or have a connection with the housing authority’s own functional area, but the authority has agreed to accept an application from you, you can only pick areas of choice within that particular authority’s functional area. How do I apply? Download an application form from your local authority's website, contact your local authority's housing department and ask for an application form, or get a form from your local Citizens Information Centre. You will need to provide additional documentation with your application form. For example, you need to include photo identification, proof of address and proof of income. The application form has a checklist that includes details of all additional documents you need. If you need help filling it out, contact your local Citizens Information Centre or your local authority. If you are a wheelchair user or need accessible accommodation you should tick the box marked ‘wheelchair liveable accommodation’ in the section of the form that asks about your housing requirements. There is also a supporting Disability/Medical form for people applying for social housing with a medical or disability need. What happens to my social housing application next? The local authority has 12 weeks from receiving your completed application form to assess it and make a decision on whether you qualify for social housing or not. This timeframe can be extended if the local authority needs additional information, which they will request from you. You must submit the additional information in the required timeframe, or your application may be refused. If you are accepted by the housing authority as being eligible for and in need of housing, you are placed on its housing list or record of qualified households. It will also notify any other housing authority in whose functional area you have specified an area of choice.

IN MEMORIAM

We miss your smile, your joking ways We miss the things you used to say And when old times we do recall It’s then we miss you most of all.

We didn’t know that morning The pain that day would bring When a golden heart stopped beating And we couldn’t do a thing. No words can heal the heartache Or stop a silent tear Or take away the memories Of a Son we loved so dear.

Sadly missed and always loved by your daughters Eileen and Noreen.

Your resting place we visit The flowers we place with care But nothing compares to the pain we feel When we turn and leave you there.

Rathmore win comes at a cost

KERRY SFC SEMI-FINAL

_________________________________________________________________________

East Kerry v Rathmore Sunday 2.30pm Fitzgerald Stadium Live on Clubber A year ago on Monday last, Paul Murphy kicked a long-range winner for East Kerry against Dingle in the county semi-final. It was the defining moment of the season as the divisional side went on to clinch their third title in four years. This week, ahead of the 2024 semi-finals, Murphy and his Rathmore teammates are plotting East Kerry’s downfall. The club from the right side of the Cork and Kerry border have been promoted back to senior and now players like Murphy and Shane Ryan are effectively trying to usurp themselves as champions. C’est la vie in Kerry’s unique and complicated ecosystem. Sadly, Murphy’s participation in Sunday’s last four tie is in doubt. He was forced off with what appeared to be a lower leg injury just before half-time in Rathmore’s quarter-final victory over Spa. The seasoned defender, who has made over 100 appearances for Kerry, would be a significant loss - especially considering the calibre of forwards at East Kerry’s disposal. Denis Moynihan’s side are also sweating over the availability of key midfielder Mark Ryan, who was harshly red-carded in the closing seconds against Spa. Ryan’s tackle was deemed to have been high and dangerous but video footage shows that only the former adjective, and not the latter, applies. The card and the associated one-match suspension should be overturned by the CCC. Assuming that Mark is available, the midfield battle between Rathmore’s Ryan brothers and the East Kerry pairing of Ronan Buckley and Kieran Murphy will be important. Cathal Ryan has been in excellent form in this championship, kicking five points in four matches. Mark’s record is even better. He has scored at least one

point in every game for a total of 0-6. Meanwhile, Murphy was one of East Kerry’s standout performers in their win against St Kieran’s. In attack, the eldest Ryan brother, Shane, is the team’s focal point, and veteran trickster John Moynihan is enjoying a fine run of form. East Kerry’s defence was open enough at times in the quarter-final but Kieran’s were wasteful in front of goal. Rathmore will need to be clinical when the opportunities come their way. It’s at the other end that you’d fear for the club side. Do they have enough man markers to keep tabs on David Clifford, Paudie Clifford, Darragh Roche and Donal O’Sullivan? Does anyone? Their natural instinct will be to retreat and keep things tight at the back but realistically East Kerry will still find ways to punch holes eventually. The key for Rathmore is to stay in the game with Shane Ryan and Moynihan keeping the scoreboard ticking over as frequently as possible. Whenever East Kerry manage to get four, five, six points ahead, that’s when things can turn ugly. That forces the losing team to come out of their shell, which allows the champions to launch devastating counter attacks. If their forwards get fast ball and are left 1 v 1 in space, it’s game over. The bookmakers have the holders as unbackable favourites to advance to the final and even if Rathmore are at full strength, you would have to say they are really up against it. They may be able to hold their own in other areas of the pitch but getting to grips with East Kerry’s star-studded forward division is an unenviable task. Last year’s intermediate champions have done brilliantly to step to senior level and compete straight away, but East Kerry appear to be on a different level entirely. VERDICT: East Kerry by seven.

Dingle and Mid Kerry set for epic clash KERRY SFC SEMI-FINAL

_________________________________________________________________________

Dingle v Mid Kerry Saturday 5.30pm Austin Stack Park Live on Clubber We could be treated to the first truly competitive knockout game of the championship on Saturday when Dingle, the best club team around, take on Mid Kerry, the second-best divisional team, in Tralee. Dingle were too strong for Templenoe in the last eight, although they found themselves in a spot of bother when Stephen O’Sullivan goaled in the 37th minute to send the underdogs into a one-point lead. The men from the west responded

emphatically, however, with their superior kickers stepping up when they were needed most. Dylan, Conor and Paul Geaney must all rank pretty high on the list of the county’s most accurate shooters and they pointed the way as Dingle outscored their opponents 11-2 over the remaining 23 minutes or so. With precise passers Mikey Geaney and Tom O’Sullivan out the field and ball-winners Paul and Conor making intelligent runs inside, Dingle are the best utilisers of the advanced mark in Kerry. This is something that Mid Kerry will need to be wary of on Saturday. You would expect Mike Breen to pick up Dylan Geaney on the 40 but he will also be tasked with acting as an enforcer around the fringes of that scoring arc where Dingle are so

dangerous. Dingle also have impactful players around the middle third. Losing Barry Dan O’Sullivan to an ankle injury during the Club Championship was a blow but Billy O’Connor is a bull of a man, and he was excellent against Templenoe, throwing his weight around and salvaging a rake of dirty ball. AFL loanee Mark O’Connor is also capable of imposing himself in the air. For their part, Mid Kerry are quite strong in this department as well. Young Kerry panellist Seán O’Brien kicked three fantastic left-footed points against Na Gaeil last weekend, and his partner Gavin Horan also got 0-3. It will be interesting to see which of Mid Kerry’s forwards is picked up by Dingle

centre back Tom O’Sullivan. Or, more to the point, which of Mid Kerry’s forwards will be forced to pick up Tom O’Sullivan when Dingle have the ball? Cillian Burke, a powerful player with a lot of potential, will more than likely play at centre forward but he may not be the best matchup for Tom given the size differential. Could we perhaps see O’Sullivan dropping deeper to line up alongside one of Mid Kerry’s lively inside forwards? Éanna O’Connor will certainly take minding and Gavan O’Grady and Liam Carey have strong credentials too. Tom Leo O’Sullivan will pick one of them up. At wing forward, Keith Evans, a pacy individual who gets through a lot of ball, is another player who will require close attention. All told it has the makings of a cracking match. The form of the Geaneys and the momentum built over the course of both championships might just tip the scales in Dingle’s favour, but Mid Kerry are primed to pounce if the men from Páirc an Ághasaigh dip below their usual high standards. VERDICT: Dingle by one.

VETERAN: Paul Geaney in action for Dingle in the Club Championship final against Kenmare. Dingle are attempting to do the double by winning both the Club and County Championships. Photo: David Fitzgerald/Sportsfile.

Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues

East Kerry are stacked but the Cliffords make all the difference

A mere 13 seconds had elapsed when Paudie Clifford clipped a right-footed shot over the bar at the Mitchels End of the ground. “Game over,” said a man standing behind me on the terrace. He was joking, obviously. Or maybe half-joking. But there was a real air of inevitability at Austin Stack Park on Saturday last as fellow district team St Kieran’s tried to dismantle the East Kerry machine. As expected, they failed. The defending champions rolled on to a 19-point win that sends them through the semi-finals of the Kerry Senior Football Championship. The high-powered divisional side, who are bidding for their fourth title in five seasons, have Rathmore and potentially Mid Kerry or Dingle standing in their way. Those three teams have a lot going for them but it does seem likely, at this juncture, that the Bishop Moynihan trophy will be retained. Understandably, morale around the rest of the county is at a low ebb. In

fact, while they wouldn’t like to admit it publicly, some teams are happy enough to have been eliminated from the championship. At this stage, the prospect of taking on East Kerry is about as appealing as doing 12 rounds with Mike Tyson in his prime. It’s not that East Kerry are the perfect team. In fact, there were times in last weekend’s match that they looked a little disjointed, particularly in defence. Kieran’s created several goalscoring opportunities in the third quarter when the game was still alive, but a combination of poor execution and some last-ditch East Kerry defending meant they were unable to capitalise.

When Kieran’s were forced to chase the game in the second half (they trailed by six at half-time), they left themselves vulnerable to counter attacks and that’s when East Kerry’s brilliant forwards flourished. It’s such a difficult task for any set of defenders to keep them all quiet. David Clifford, Darragh Roche and Paudie Clifford require urgent attention for a start. Then opposition managers still need to think about Donal O’Sullivan, a deadly accurate kicker who started for Kerry in the league this year. When your fourth best back has to mark a county player, you know you’re up against it. Rivals say that East Kerry are too stacked. It’s unfair. It’s time to split them up. Personally, while I understand the sentiment, I’m not so sure that’s an appropriate response. Yes, they are currently stacked and they have stars all over the pitch and in the dugout, but what really sets them apart from the rest is that they have two of the country’s top 10 footballers in their ranks. David Clifford, the best player many of us have ever seen, was operating at around 65% the last day. He still scored 1-5 (including a cracking goal), he forced the turnover that led to Roche’s GENERAL: Paudie Clifford is East Kerry's 'emotional leader' and is integral to their continued success. opening goal, and he teed up Patrick Darcy’s goal with a beautifully deft hand pass. Paudie was even better. The 26-year-old is the team’s on-field general and emotional leader. He dictates play both verbally (he is constantly telling his teammates what to do, even as he bobs and weaves with ball in hand) and also with his distribution, which is second to none. He had 39 possessions against Kieran’s, giving the ball away just once via a hand pass that was deemed to be illegal. Other than that, his passing was perfect: 22 passes with the hand and 12 with the foot. All on the money. He scored 0-2, directly created 2-2, and the ball went through his hands in 19 of the 23 East Kerry attacks that ended with a score. As blessed with talent as East Kerry are, it’s not the combination of clubs that makes them seem virtually unbeatable. It’s the Cliffords. With that in mind, the people in the north, south and west of the county who are baying for East Kerry’s demise will be tuning in to the upcoming Intermediate final with great interest. If Fossa beat Milltown-Castlemaine they will move up to senior and the Clifford brothers will represent their club, not their district, in 2024. Would East Kerry still be a serious force without their Fossa contingent? Without question, but they wouldn’t seem so invincible. It should at least deter fans from saying “game over” after 13 seconds.

What really sets the champions apart is that they have two of the country’s top 10 footballers

Former Kerry footballer Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews last week’s quarter-final action in the Kerry Senior Football Championship Rathmore 0-14 | Spa 1-8 Rathmore are safely through to the last four but they are sweating over a firsthalf injury to Kerry star Paul Murphy who had to retire with a suspected calf problem. The availability of Mark Ryan is also unclear as this column goes to bed. In the closing stages of injury time, Laune Rangers referee Seán Joy issued a straight red to the Rathmore midfielder for a high tackle on Eoin Fitzgerald. Rathmore will most likely appeal that decision and get the card rescinded. They had just three points to spare over Spa but the outcome was far more predictable than it appears. Spa were well in arrears at half-time even though they had played with the breeze. The ageless John Moynihan (0-4) and Kerry goalkeeper Shane Ryan (0-5) were the top scorers for the winners. Rathmore should have been out of sight in the second half, but Spa rallied after cracker of a goal by Spillane. Now just two points clear, Rathmore stepped on the accelerator once more to make sure of the win. East Kerry 4-19 | St Kieran’s 0-12 The Clifford brothers returned from their well-earned short rest and they led the way in a massive 19-point win over St Kieran’s. Kieran’s were never in the shake up. Top scorers for the reigning champions were the in-form Darragh Roche (1-5) and David Clifford (1-5). St Kieran’s did have some good performers, but they couldn’t keep out that East Kerry tsunami tide. It was a foregone conclusion even before half-time but once further scores went on the board, Jerry O’Sullivan was able to run his bench with absolute confidence. It didn’t weaken the team. Subs used were Matt Rennie for Kieran Murphy, Emmett O’Shea for Darragh Lyne, Luke Crowley for Patrick Darcy, Niall Donohue for Dara O’Callaghan, and Finbarr Murphy for Donal O’Sullivan. Rathmore are next up for the champions. Anything but a clear-cut passage into the final would be a surprise. In fact, I expect them to win easily on Sunday and also win the county final two weeks later at the expense of Mid Kerry. Why? They have the Clifford

Divisional sides hold all the aces brothers, and the old adage of rising tides lifts all boats comes to mind. Jerry O’Sullivan has so many options not just in the starting 15 but has the back up of so many more subs, should any of the starters not perform or have to leave the fray through injury. The remaining club sides do not have uniform quality players in their panels. Mid Kerry 1-19 | Na Gaeil 1-7 Mid Kerry made light work of this one-sided game at the Fitzgerald Stadium, finishing 12 points clear of Na Gaeil, who were out of their depth. Na Gaeil had the Kerry midfielder partnership of Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor but they got no change from Gavin Horan and Seán O’Brien. The Mid Kerry midfielders scored three points each. The Tralee side were never a real threat. Even when Mike Breen was sin-binned, They made little headway, still adrift at half-time despite a Morgan Madden goal before the break. Na Gaeil spurned some more goal chances, but it was Mid Kerry all the way. Top scorer for Mid Kerry was Éanna O’Connor (1-5, two frees). Fiachra Clifford also impressed when he came on as a sub in the 40th minute. He scored three points. Dingle 0-20 | Templenoe 1-9 Leading club side Dingle had too much power for Templenoe, who did so well to make it this far. Even without the injured Adrian Spillane, they actually led by a point in the 36th minute after Stephen O’Sullivan’s goal. However, they failed to score during the final 20 minutes as Dingle tacked on the all-important scores. All in all, eight players on the Dingle team scored. In my view, Dingle are not the potent team we saw earlier this year. That unfortunate first minute injury to Barry Dan O’Sullivan in Spa in the Club Championship has blunted their prowess. I regard him as the great provider of scoring chances for the Geaneys. Mark O’Connor has not been a force at midfield on his holidays from the AFl and his contribution is limited. Mid Kerry have been slow to prosper this season, but with more options than Dingle they should have too much for the club champions.

Lakers win at home again

It’s two home victories from two for Brian Clarke’s new look Scotts Lakers NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 ___________________________________________________________________________________

Scotts Lakers

88 | Titans

KILLARNEY SPORTS & LEISURE CENTRE The Lakers maintained their 100% home record in the 2023/24 season with a second straight win at the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre, this time against Titans BC. The hosts recovered from a five-minute cold streak at the start of the fourth quarter to see out the game with six points to spare. Brian Clarke’s men provided some memorable moments as Braden Bell had three dunks and Jack O’Sullivan also got up high on a breakaway to excite the home crowd. The undoubted highlight of the first half came when Titans player Joseph Coughlan nailed a full-court buzzer-beater. You don’t see one of those every day. Paul Clarke was influential again for the Lakers alongside Moss and Bell and between the trio they accounted for nineteen points in the opening quarter. Jamie O’Sullivan netted the other two. Eoin Carroll and David Gleeson, making his comeback from injury, freshened up the Lakers line-up in the second quarter and soon the Moss/Bell combination had the game tied at 29-29 apiece. Carroll nudged the Lakers clear before Bell took delivery of a long Moss pass to dunk it home. Moss, Carroll, Bell and Clarke made it 42-37 with Coughlan’s radar in working order. The Titans had now run up five team fouls, though, and the Lakers found scores easier to come by. Mensah's influence was under control, all of the above crucial factors in the 55-42 half-time lead. Eoin Carroll finished off a sublime

team move and Bell and Moss were scoring freely. The home side retired to the changing rooms in control. The Titans came out for the second half recharged, upping the ante on defence and cutting the lead to nine. Robertson, Mensah and Jackson Soper were instrumental in their renaissance as three pointers from Bell and Moss kept the Lakers’ noses in front at the end of the third (73-63). The Titans came out swinging in the third with Coughlan, Mensah, Robertson, U18 international Victor Tashev and Coughlan again putting them up by one. Having worked so hard to get back into the game, the Titans again had team foul trouble and they were duly punished by Jack O’Sullivan, Moss and Bell. Not even five late points from Robertson could stop the Lakers from securing victory on an 88-82 scoreline. Speaking post-match to club PRO Enda Walshe, Coach Clarke hailed the influence of American duo Bell and Moss. “There are two very grounded lads who understand exactly what the team needs. It's a learning experience for our young lads and we couldn't have two better people

than Terion and Braden to help us out. “Ronan Collins and Mark Sheehan are both good shooters and we missed them tonight. If we had them we may have played a little differently. But it's always good to win and we look forward to the challenge of UCD Marian next weekend.” That challenge will be very interesting considering UCD Marian have dropped down from the Super League after a long stay there. Like the Lakers they lost their opening game but have responded well, winning two local derbies against Moy Tolka Rovers and Malahide. They count amongst their troops former

Laker Toby Christensen and have reliable scorers in Sasha Feench and Mathew McGrath. Conor Meaney has buckets of experience. Tip-off in the UCD Sports Centre is at 7pm on Saturday.

LAKERS: Braden Bell 34, Terion Moss 27, Paul Clarke 11, Eoin Carroll 8, Jamie O’Sullivan 5, Jack O’Sullivan 2, David Gleeson, Mark Sheehan, Oisín Spring, Chris Healy, Ronan Collins. TITANS: Samuel Mensah 24, Joseph Coughlan 20, Deontae Robertson 18, Jackson Soper 12.

Killarney Legion GAA O’SULLIVAN CUP: We made our exit in the quarter final of the O’Sullivan Cup when we were beaten by Fossa in the quarter final. Playing well against the wind we went in at half ahead by 2-4 to 0-8. The second half was nip and tuck, but a strong Fossa outfit finished the game stronger, winning by 1-16 to 2-11. Team: Colm O’Cuiv, Cathal Sheahan, Sean McCarthy, Callum O’Donoghue,

Callum O’Grady, Danny Sheahan, Peter O’Sullivan, Daniel Carroll, Jamie Alade, Ian Prendergast, Peter McCarthy, Shaun Keane, Thomas Moriarty, David O’Sullivan, Ryan O’Grady. Subs used Tom Cronin, Eoghan Crowley U15 BOYS: The U15 boys season goes on after a highly dramatic East Kerry Championship semi-final in Glenflesk on Sunday morning. Played in glorious autumnal sunshine the hosts took control of the game early, hitting the first two scores of the game. The lads responded well, and the game was open with a mix of good play and handling errors on the dewy grass leading to scores for both teams. Jack Culloty was quickest off the mark to pounce on a rebound to score a crucial goal which saw us with a half time lead of 1-6 to 0-8. The game continued in an exciting fashion with Legion raising another green flag from Eoin Murphy, but Glenflesk were not out of the game, making lots of dangerous runs, drawing frees and kicking good scores to narrow the deficit. Following a turnover late in the game the hosts kicked a deserved equaliser point. On into extra time it went - again a great sporting contest that was nip and tuck throughout. Legion took the lead on three occasions only for Glenflesk to peg them back. A last free kick from well out brought the game to the lottery that is penalties. Legion won the toss and elected to shoot first. Jack Culloty, Eoin Murphy and Bryan OConnor all scored while James Murphy made two great saves. Jack OGrady slotted home the fourth and final penalty to bring Legion to an U15 final against Firies who defeated Dr Crokes in the other semi-final. A great game and full credit to Glenflesk and to all the supporters from both clubs who encouraged their warriors on the pitch. Final Score AET: Legion 2:11 Glenflesk 0:17. (Legion won 4-1 on penalties).

Spa GAA COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: Hard luck to our Senior men's side after ending their County Championship at the quarter final stage having been defeated by Rathmore on Saturday. Final score on the day Rathmore 0-14 Spa 1-08. This side have displayed some great football throughout the competition and have had the members of club behind them all the way. After finishing second in their group in this competition and retaining Senior and Division 1 status overall it was not a bad year for the lads. We wish them the best of luck in their preparations for the O'Donoghue Cup. EAST REGION COISTE NA NÓG: Our U15 boys side were unlucky on Sunday when they played Gneeveguilla in the U15 Division 3 final.
