Classic car run to raise funds for seriously injured Barraduff man

The family of a popular Barraduff man who suffered serious injures in an accident in June have paid tribute to the local community who have supported them in their difficult times.

Jerry O’Leary, of Cornhill, Barraduff, suffered serious injuries in an accident near his home on June 12.

Jerry is well-known in the locality, particularly amongst car enthusiasts in the area. He was a long-time mechanic at Bowler’s Toyota in Killarney before moving to Mondelez (or as it's better known Cadbury’s) in Rathmore.

The accident left him with life-changing injuries.

On the day of the accident he was taken

to Kerry General Hospital and from there airlifted to the Mater hospital in Dublin where he underwent major surgery. He was critical and spent two weeks in ICU attached to a large ventilator and having one-to-one 24 hour nursing care. Jerry is at present in the Spinal Unit and is still being assisted by a ventilator and is communicating with help of a voice box. Jerry needs constant care, including physiotherapists, speech and language and occupational therapists.

Family and friends are currently raising funds so his house can be upgraded and allow him to return home.

His wife Bina and children Gearoid and Michael thanked the local community for their fundraising efforts so far.

“Our life was turned upside down on June 12, but with the wonderful support of family, friends and the whole community they have guided us through this time,” said Bina.

“Any money raised will go towards getting Jerry home, through adapting the house and whatever else he may need to come home. We would like to thank everyone for their support and kindness

over the last few months and may God bless you all.”

The latest fundraising effort is being organised by the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club on Sunday.

They are running a classic car, tractor and truck run in Barraduff to help raise vital funds for the O’Leary family.

Registration for the run will start at 9.30 am at Barraduff Community Field, Shronedarragh, and will depart at 1130 am.

“This dual run is the last event in what was a busy year celebrating the club’s ten year anniversary and there is always something special about a joint car and tractor run,” said club secretary Richard O’Donoghue.

"Our previous club runs have covered much of the county and we are delighted to be hosting a Run in the Headford area."

Coffee cup project highlighted in new video

The team behind the Killarney Coffee Cup Project has produced a short video to show people how it has progressed since its launch in July.

“It is a reminder of why Killarney is single use coffee cup free with over 50 businesses participating,” said project lead Ciara Treacy.

This video was released on the project’s Instagram page at 8am on Wednesday morning.

One of Killarney’s great motorsport legends passes away

Dermot O’Sullivan, of Ardshanavooly, Killarney, sadly passed away this week.

This popular Killarney businessman started in motorsport in 1968 participating in tarmac and forestry rallying and later in hot rod racing.

Ballydribeen Community Development unveiled

The Ballydribeen Community Development Plan 2023-2028 was officially launched on Thursday evening (September 28) in the International Hotel in Killarney by Mayor Brendan Cronin.

The Residents Association commissioned plan was received by a very good turnout of residents, councillors and other interested agencies.

This plan details the priority actions for the development of the area over the coming years and is based on in-depth consultation with the community and key agencies and organisations.

The plan was prepared by independent community consultants Paul O'Raw and associates, Dr Brendan O'Keeffe and Dr Hrishi Balall.

The process also included a Geodesign workshop with local residents and stakeholders.

The Resident's Association is now keen to strengthen its working relations with all stakeholders to implement the strategies in the plan, to meet the needs of this young, growing and dynamic community.

According to the survey the vast majority of the residents enjoy living in Ballydribeen which has a lot of natural advantages such as being close to the river Deenagh as well as within walking distance to shops, schools and medical

facilities.

Highlighted areas include: The entrance to and from the estates; Lack of facilities, for such a big housing area, which is made up of seven separate estates that includes 320 houses, there are no amenities like childcare, playgrounds: No access to a Community Garda.

The overwhelming negative issue with regard to the estates is the entrance junction with the very busy main Tralee Road. There is only one entrance /exit for about 320 houses. It is a major concern and an ongoing issue. This dangerous situation has already caused several accidents and will continue to do so unless something is done immediately.

Residents live in fear of further accidents.

The full implementation of the plan which includes improved community facilities and extra resources will help the Residents Association’s goal in making the Ballydribeen area one of the best places to live in Killarney.

This Community Development plan was made possible through funding from the Rural & Community Development (Leader) and SICAP.

A high point in his motorsport career was competing on the 1982 Circuit of Ireland in his Datsun Sunny, at a time when competitors had no pacenotes, relying on sheer wit and skill.

In 2005, after a 23-year gap, he returned to rallying in a Talbot Sunbeam competing in the Killarney Historic Rally with his son Paul in the navigator’s seat, and competed in various events till 2009.

Whenever the glory of days of Kerry rallying are discussed in local pubs during the wee hours, it was certain that Dermot’s name would be mentioned. He had a sideways style of driving that kept every spectator entertained.

As much a flamboyant competitor behind the wheel of his Datsun, his ability to tell a good story was equally entertaining.

As a young motorsport enthusiast, I waited with anticipation each week as Dermot called to the ‘Advertiser’ office in Woodlawn to placing his weekly advert, to hear his animated description of his exploits on the rallying stages. As time went on, the stories never faded, and I always enjoyed our encounters. Dermot establishing a successful chainsaw and lawnmower business in the 1970’s, down Pawn Office Lane, off High Street, Killarney. In true entrepreneurial spirit he saw a gap in the market, soon after establishing O’Sullivan’s Cycles as one of the first to introduce bike rental to Killarney, a business venture that is still successful today under the guidance of the current O’Sullivan generations.

A true character and an absolute gentleman. May he rest in peace.

Our sincere condolences to wife, Mary, sons Paul, Derry and David, daughters-in-law Barbara, Denise and Fiona, grandchildren Megan, Luke, Kate and Ciara and his great granddaughter Ava, his sisters Breda and Maureen and brother John, brother-in-law Bill, sister-in-law Ann, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours, and many great friends.

Killarney MEP Sean Kelly welcomes Kerry Co-Op to Strasbourg

Seán Kelly, MEP for Ireland South welcomed over 90 representatives from Kerry Co-Operative Creameries to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Monday this week.

The group enjoyed a tour of the Parliament building and had the opportunity to observe the parliament’s plenary session.

The tour was followed by a productive discussion with MEP Kelly on recent developments in agriculture and climate policy at EU and national level.

Denis Carroll, Chairman of the Kerry Coop board, said “On behalf of Kerry Co-op I want to express our gratitude to Seán Kelly MEP for meeting us on Monday evening. We built our tour around this

event and we are very grateful for all of the work that was put in to organising it. Sean’s professionalism ensured we had a very successful and very well coordinated visit to the Parliament. We also want to acknowledge how well briefed Sean was on the various issues we raised with him and the directness of his answers. Our group are very honoured to have a

man of his calibre representing us in the European Parliament.”

During the discussion, Kelly provided insights on pertinent trade agreements, such as the EU’s potential agreement with Mercosur, and environmental policies, such as the Carbon Removal Certification Framework, which he believes will impact on Irish farmers.

After 40 years of service with An Garda Síochána, I thought in any line of work, how important it is important to celebrate longevity for many reasons, not the least of which it shows the continuity to adapt, improve and motivate, to the changes brought about by time, techniques and society.

Sergeant Gearoid Keating, this week retired from the RPU (Roads Policing Unit) so I paid a visit to his home in Beaufort for a cupán tae and a chat.

Take me back to Templemore Gearoid?

“In October 1983, I entered a very different Garda Training College to what it is now. From the moment we arrived, we were Gardaí. With over 500 recruits in-house, the routine began immediately with early morning room inspections, followed by marching in full uniform and inspection on our personal hygiene and presentation at random. Lights out by 11:30 pm nightly, and returning home was only permitted three times over our six-month stint in Templemore. Sunday was the best day of the week, as after marching to mass in full uniform, we were free for the day, well at least until 11:30 pm” Gearoid laughed.

So what was in store for you on 'passing out' of Templemore?

“Store Street, that's what was in store!!!

Our stationed posts were announced not one minute before we passed out. I was immediately on a bus to Dublin, a city I'd only visited once, to see my native Galway play in Croke Park in 1979.

Store Street Garda Station is one of the busiest stations in Europe and when I arrived, the AIDS, Hepatitis C, Heroin epidemic was at its peak. I arrived with two colleagues, bags in hand where the waiting area was heaving. After announcing ourselves were told to return the next day at 6 pm. Our accents gave us away and we paid three times the fair to the taxi driver who took the scenic route to our board and lodgings in Santry. It was buses from then on which didn't run after mid-

Marie Meets

Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.

Sergeant Gearoid Keating

Is there any one story that sticks out in your mind as a Garda/Sergeant Gearoid?

night so the only solution outside of bus times was to invest in a good bike, which I was knocked off of several times. On my first night on the beat, I was accompanied by senior Garda for half of that shift and the other half was up to me. It was daunting by comparison. A vast change from Gort where my mother was afraid to let me walk down the street alone, to me asking for directions back to Store Street Garda Station after I'd finished my first shift! I was naive but I learned much, fast! I had never seen a heroin addict, not even on TV because it just wouldn't be shown. Initially, the assumption was that diseases such as AIDS and Hepatitis C could be transmitted through contact and this was used to weaponise us on the beat. In those days if arresting a person, you'd have to go directly to the next available court. So if your shift finished at 6 am, the courts wouldn't open til 9 am and some days it was 1 pm before your case would be heard and you'd be back in then for 6 pm that evening. The law has since changed to 30 days to go to court thankfully”.

So what kept you in Dublin Gearoid?

“I soon met my wife Sarah. It was love at first sight. I remained in Dublin for a further 10 years until I was promoted to Sergeant in charge at Burtonport, Co. Donegal. Sarah didn't come with me as

she figured a six-hour commute home from Donegal, to see her mother in Co. Kerry, that she might as well be in New York! But we did set off one weekend prior to my post, to check out my new adventure. No sat nav back then! A map and signposts that changed from English to Irish, brought us to 'An Gaeltacht' which included the beautiful Arranmore Island. I soon became a native and I found myself no longer fearful that when someone raised their hand to me it was merely a friendly gesture of greeting. It was a huge change for me to move from the inner city to rural Ireland. I loved it. It was one of my favourite posts but it was shortlived as I was excited to soon become a father to my son Matthew, so I headed south again to Ronanstown, Dublin, for a year and a half, and we welcomed my daughter Niamh during this time”.

Had you become a fan of the Dubs then?

“I suppose I had in ways. After Ronanstown, my next station was Rathmines which was a lovely middle-class area to be stationed at, but I soon relocated to DMR South (Dublin Metropolitan Region)

Traffic Unit in Terrenure where I stayed for 2/3 years.

After that, in 2005, I was Kerry-bound with Sarah, Matthew & Niamh, to work in the Roads Policing Unit where I stayed for 15 years.

“There are many Marie, but one I can share is that of a younger Gearoid on a security post outside the GPO. Randomly, a man approached me, frantically pointing at another man on a very crowded busy O'Connell Street. He repeated over again, 'He's wearing my suit'!. He was most insistent and gave distinctive markings on the suit to compare. His house had recently been burgled and robbed of his many possessions. I approached the other man with sensitivity, who like myself was clearly a country man, considering his accent alone. On producing his ID, I discovered he was known to Gardaí, so on ordering a search of his B&B, we found an abundance of jewellery and other stolen items from various robberies”. Gearoid, have you any retirement plans ahead?

They joke that I'll take up new residence at Beaufort Golf Club, where I've thoroughly enjoyed being Captain/President/ Treasurer over the past 12 years. The community has always been important to me and the Gardaí are a huge part of the community.

I'm not sure what exactly is on the cards next Marie, but it will definitely be Australia for myself & Sarah as we've never been, to visit my son Matthew, an engineer in Perth, and my daughter Niamh who is a teacher in Vietnam.

Before I left I asked Gearoid if he'd enjoyed his going away party at Reidy's over the weekend. “Wait a minute and I'll show you a video that was featured on the night of Marty Morrissey” who had no bones about recalling Gearoid's hurling fame, at an All Ireland Vocational Semi-Final, in 1982 against Tipperary, where he was reprimanded and sent off for foul play. “It was a great night Marie. The Sheahan family put in such effort to make it a most memorable night and I was surrounded by colleagues, family and friends. What more could I ask for?”

Meitheal group continues Rhododendron fight

The Killarney Meitheal group has re-commenced its assault on the invasive Rhododendron plant in Killarney National Park.

Each Sunday and Tuesday morning from 9 until 12 for the next few months the group will meet and set about controlling the growth of the plant.

“Much good work has been done in recent years but there is so much more to

do. We wish all involved well in their endeavours. All the work is done in co-operation with the NPWS which has responsibility for managing Killarney National Park.,” said former town mayor Michael Gleeson who is one of the main devotes

to the challenge.

“We'll also be taking on the task of treating and removing regrowth of Rhododendron from areas we've already cleared - from Courtney's to Torc, Bluebell Wood, and Pool Wood. This regrowth is totally normal, as those sneaky seeds often lie dormant in the ground and then sprout during wet conditions like we had this summer.

New Volunteers always welcome – join the team at Abbey Cross every Tuesday and Sunday 9 am – refreshments will be served after each session.

A case of mistaken identity at Killarney Races AutumnFest

The final festival of the season, AutumnFest, took place at Killarney Races last weekend, delivering a fun-filled programme with increased crowds, top-class racing and a superb atmosphere.

Despite a rocky start on the weather front on Saturday, it certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of those in attendance. With no less than a dozen individual hen and stag parties raring to go at the track, the bars were full, the bookies were busy and the craic was mighty. Thankfully, the sun shone for punters for the National Hunt card on Sunday which was a fantastic day of racing action, although not without plenty of drama and media headlines too.

Over the weekend, Tote very generously sponsored 11 races and EBF sponsored 3 races, attracting a good entry with all the top yards represented. Trainer Jessica Harrington enjoyed a double on Saturday with the O’Brien brothers Donnacha and Joseph each on the winners board with Navel Force and Gamble Veloci obliging for the pair respectively.

Bang Po ridden by Donagh

and trained by Ross O’Sullivan was promoted to winner status, following a case of mistaken identity and subsequent disqualification.

A handling mix up meant a stable with two horses on the card ran the wrong horse in the wrong race which in turn duly went on to win. On inspection the mix-up was identified and the horse was disqualified by the stewards.

The unusual occurrence was witnessed by bumper crowds at the meeting with many guests in attendance from Ireland and the UK.

The trainer involved, John Feane, was fined €3,000 by the stewards and held his hands up over the incident. He told Racing TV: "It's human error. I was unfortunately delayed getting to the races. I was stuck in traffic and got here ten minutes late.

"I have apologised to the owners, this

has cost everyone money. The wrong horse was tacked up and I noticed the error immediately when I arrived in the stable yard. It's history now, but people study history to discover where things go wrong. At point-topoints we scan every horse before they go into the parade ring. Maybe in the future it might help trainers and stable staff if that was brought in at race meetings instead of just scanning the winner after the race.

"But on saying that, I'm not blaming anyone bar myself. I've accepted the fine. I have the right to appeal but I'm not going to. I would like to apologise as sincerely as I can to the punters and the owners. I will put this behind me and go forward."

Sunday was a national hunt race day with seven exciting races over jumps. Dual purpose trainer Joseph O’Brien got on the board again with Goodie Two Shoes winning the first race of the day. Enda Bolger’s Solidary Man won the Tote.ie Novice Hurdle in impressive fashion with Darragh O’Keeffe on board.

Much to the delight of punters, strong favourite in the market ‘Londonofficeiscalling’ obliged at 5/2 in the 4th race for father and son combination Eric and Conor McNamara, covering the expenses of the day for many in attendance. Tony Martin’s Read to Return ridden by Philip Enright took the Tote Fantacy Beginners Chase to bring down the curtain on the festival and indeed the season at Killarney Races.

Killarney Racecourse Chairman, Billy O’Sullivan commented “What a lovely meeting AutumnFest turned out to be, it was a great two-day meeting that was thoroughly enjoyed by all with some fantastic winners. I would like to thank all our patrons, supporters and sponsors and the horse-racing industry without whom racing would not be possible. We truly had a wonderful 2023 season and can’t wait to do it all again next year!” Next year, Killarney Races will bring you four festivals to enjoy over the months of May, July, August and October.

Killarney to host KIFF events

Kerry International Film Festival (KIFF) has officially launched its 2023 film festival programme today.

Celebrating its 24th edition, this year’s festival will take place on October 19 – 22 .

AWARD

One of the yearly highlights of KIFF is the Maureen O’Hara Award.

In 2008 KIFF established the Maureen O’Hara Award in celebration of women who have excelled in film, TV and/or media. At the time it was one of the few film awards anywhere in the world that was offered exclusively to women. This year, KIFF is delighted to announce that the KIFF 2023 Maureen O’ Hara Award recipient is Actress Eileen Walsh. Walsh’s notable roles include The Van, The Last Bus Home, When Brendan met Trudy, The Magdalene Sisters, Pure Mule, Eden, and Catastrophe, to name a few. She is also a revered stage actor, having recently starred in the Lyndsey Turner directed film The Crucible (Winner of Best Revival nomination - Olivier Awards 2023), and Girl on an Alter directed by Annabelle Comyn.

KIFF is thrilled to be presenting Eileen Walsh with the KIFF 2023 Maureen O’ Hara Award on October 20 at Randles Hotel Killarney, via their ‘In Conversation with Eileen Walsh’ event.

KIFF Programme Director, Declan Lynch, said, “Eileen is one of Ireland’s finest actors, her inclusion as a Maureen O’Hara award recipient is an opportunity for us to reflect on her unique and singular career to date. We look forward to welcoming Eileen to Killarney in October.”

Speaking about receiving the Maureen O’ Hara Award Eileen Walsh said, “There’s a photo of me and my sister Bernadette sitting on a picnic bench. I had taken a chunk of my communion money and bought a beige t-shirt and matching skirt.

I pulled my knee socks up and smiled for the camera. My parents had brought us for a day trip to see The Quiet Man house. I thought I was as beautiful as she was as I sat on the picnic table. My dad insisted he’d try the healthy water spring which smelt awful and tasted worse, although through his twisted face and appalled eyes he squeezed the words ‘Ah it’s not that bad’. I’m so delighted to receive this Maureen O Hara award, her films are one thing, but her lasting friendships and continued collaborations with directors and actors is a thing to admire and aspire to. As a proud Cork woman, I’m only sorry it’s the Kingdom of Kerry that got there first to give me such an award. Míle Buíochas.”

OPENING NIGHT

The opening night of the festival will be celebrated with a reception hosted by Randles Hotel Killarney on October 19 which will be followed by a screening of KIFF’s opening film for 2023, Michael Holly and Mieke Vanmechelen’s Hungry Hill - in the IMC Killarney.

This Irish documentary explores the lives of sheep farmers in West Cork, and co-directors Mieke Vanmechelen and Michael Holly present a remote and proud community and explore the difficult issues around sustainable farming. It's a brilliant feature that thrilled at KIFF’s sold-out special screening at the Kenmare Mart this past August, and the festival is honoured to open KIFF 2023 with such a strong local film. Mieke Vanmechelen has been Kerry’s Filmmaker in residence for the past three years, and KIFF are looking forward to welcoming the cast and crew for a special opening night Gala in cele-

bration of this wonderful film. Other Irish highlights across KIFF 2023 include Dubliner Patricia Kelly’s debut drama ‘Verdigris’ starring Geraldine McAlinden who shines as Marian, a middle-class retired woman who forms an unexpected bond with a challenging inner-city teen played by the impressive Maya O'Shea.

Adapted from Roddy Doyle’s book of the same title, A Greyhound of a Girl is the latest feature offering from Italian animator Enzo d’Alo (How the Toys Saved Christmas, 2012’s Pinocchio). As magical as it is funny, the title is sure to please children and parents alike.

On a darker theme and with similar premises, that of sleep deprivation, KIFF is presenting a double bill featuring John Farrelly’s ‘The Sleep Experiment’ and Ian Hunt-Duffy ‘Double Blind’. This year also boasts a strong line-up of documentaries both Irish and international, including Nina Menkes’s Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power. It’s a powerful piece on the politics of gender in Hollywood.

Friday’s programme includes two strong music documentaries in Sarah Share’s The Graceless Age - The Ballad of John Murry and Michael McGlynn's M'ANAM : Between Two Worlds. On Saturday KIFF are showcasing Aurélio Michiles’s chilling feature Secrets from Putumayo, an engaging tale of the investigations of Roger Casement in the jungles of South America.

LIVE EXPERIENCES

Féach/Éist! This year KIFF is also adding some unique live experiences to its programme. Each event is based on a theme of film making.

On the theme of Sound, KIFF presented the students of Kerry College with an unusual audiovisual storytelling challenge. They have been asked to create a visual narrative based on Molly O’Mahony’s debut album ‘The House of David’. Molly O’Mahony will perform live in St. Mary's Church on October 20 in what promises to be a special live visual and musical experience.

On Saturday October 21 at IMC and Sunday October 22 at Siamsa Tíre, Symphonic Sapheads Little John Nee and Fionn Robinson perform an incredible live score celebration of Buster Keaton’s 1924 comedy classic ‘Sherlock Junior’.

It’s a hilarious cinema experience suitable for all the family. This is followed by DreamGun’s bizarre and outrageous ‘Script Reads’ show. DreamGun will be performing the script of James Cameron’s Titanic in what promises to be a classic night out.

FRINGE FESTIVAL CLUB.

This year the festival has decided to expand its programme by partnering with VHSclub6 to launch KIFF club, which is a video rental club, mini cinema and a nightclub.

Tickets, event registration and festival passes will be available to purchase from from www.kerryfilmfestival.com

Vuelta for Killarney Community College students

Killarney Community College's Senior Cycle students embarked on a whirlwind tour of Andalucia, Spain, that was nothing short of a rollercoaster of fun and adventure.

The group left Killarney at 4.30 am and were welcomed to Malaga with blue skies and sunshine with the mercury hitting 28

degrees. After getting their bearings they hit the ground running in Malaga, swinging from treetops like Tarzan at a tree-top adventure park.

Day two was an action packed day at Plaza de España's and paddle surfing down the Gualdalquivir river which proved to be a difficult balancing act.

German students on local internships

A group of 11 German students are work placement programme in Killarney.

In a dynamic cross-cultural exchange, two teachers of English and Economics from the city of Wirtschaftsschule, Gunzenhausen, Germany, Tobias Heigl and Timo Schulz, have embarked on an enriching internship abroad through the Erasmus Exchange Programme.

Accompanying them are 11 eager students, each pursuing their own internships in various businesses and companies across the Killarney.

Utilising the services and supports that are available at the Killarney Innovation Centre, they will complete a range of programmes and projects broadening their experiences and expertise, building networking capabilities that will al-

low for the transfer of knowledge. This exchange is made possible by the Killarney Town Twinning Association, an organisation committed to fostering international connections and cultural understanding.

The initiative not only aims to impart invaluable professional experiences but also seeks to immerse participants in the vibrant tapestry of Irish life and traditions.

Through hands-on involvement in diverse industries, from hospitality to corporate ventures, they're gaining insights that will shape their future career.

With the Erasmus Exchange Program and the Killarney Town Twinning Association at the helm, this venture is poised to leave a lasting impact on these teachers and students, bridging cultures and nurturing a global perspective that will resonate throughout their careers.

They continued their adventure with a trip to the bowling alley and trip to a museum. To cap it off, an impromptu evening dip in the ocean added a salty twist to their Spanish escapade. Day three brought a touch of culture with the Alhambra Palace and city exploration, some retail therapy and it still ended with

a splash in the ocean.

Finally the group waved adiós to Andalucia, taking home tan lines and tales for the ages. The trip proved to be a great opportunity to test out their Spanish language skills and bring home school memories that were not just confined to the classroom.

Regan’s Apiary wins Blas na hÉireann Gold

“We are delighted to be the first Kerry Beekeepers to win the Gold award at Blas na hÉireann having won Silver in 2021,” said Tim.

“The bees will be buzzing when I tell them that they are producing the tastiest honey in Ireland. I am confident that more Kerry honeys will feature in the final in the coming years.”

“Just as the proof of the pudding is in the eating so too the proof of the honey is in the taste. Being awarded the tastiest honey in Ireland by Blas na hÉireann is indeed special.

All honeybees bring in nectar to make honey. The nectar the bees bring back to the hive is 80% water and bees must fan this with their wings to evaporate

the water and make honey.

They foraged wild flowers in the surrounding areas gives the honey from each apiary its own unique taste.

The Kingdom is blessed with a vast variety of wild flowers which makes Kerry honey taste so much better.

Our honey is harvested from the hives in early September. It is then capped, spun and sieved to remove big pieces of wax and pollen before jarring. It is 100% pure and natural and unfiltered. The honey still contains small particles of wax and pollen which are not visible to the naked eye and these help to combat allergens,” added Tim.

People are recently much more interested in natural foods and the health ben-

efits they possess and are willing to pay more for 100% local honey than imported blended honey.

“Our apiary is located in a traditional farm three kilometres from Killarney town. It comprises of twenty acres of farmland with a variety of bee loving hedgerows, like Blackthorn, Gorse, Oak, Rowan, Sycamore, and Whitethorn.

“There is a Bee Meadow which comprises of 2.5 acres of flowers for pollinators along with wild flowers to attract bumblebees, butterflies and insects with a pathway around the Bee Meadow with

information posters to assist you identify the birds, butterflies and bumblebees. Due to the poor weather had in July the amount of summer honey harvested is down by over 40%, this will lead to a shortage of local honey this year."

The honey can be bought via an honesty box at at V93D7W0. It is also available at the Blacksheep hostel and café in New Street and Noelle’s at the Milltown market.

Former mayor Patrick O'Connor Scarteen announces retirement

Former Mayor of Kerry Patrick O'Connor Scarteen says he will not seek re-election at next year’s local elections.

The Fine Gael man announced his retirement from politics this week.

It brings to an end an unbroken run of public duty for the O’Connor Scarteen family that stretches back to 1948 when his grandfather, also Patrick was first elected to Kerry County Council.

Although elected in the Kenmare Municipal District, O’Connor Scarteen lives in Killarney.

He divides his time between the two towns, particularly his home town of Kenmare where the bulk of his political support come from.

Rossbeigh sand dunes in danger of being “wiped out’ Councillor

The beautiful sand dunes at Rossbeigh Beach are under constant pressure from erosion from the elements and are in danger of being wiped out, according to Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill.

“Everything possible must be done to save the sand dunes at the famous beach from being wiped out” said local resident and Councillor, Michael Cahill. “The dunes in Rossbeigh have been breached on a number of occasions in recent years by the Atlantic Ocean, and further damage will occur if steps are not taken to protect them and to protect homes all along the coast from Kells

through Incherea, Dooks, and Cromane. The residents of these areas deserve to know when works will start to protect their homes and the general public deserve to know if Rossbeigh Sand-dunes are going to be totally wiped out by the tide” stated Councillor Cahill.

“As the owners of the beach, I would be anxious that Kerry County Council would get involved in a major marram

grass project. I know there is plenty of interest locally. I think it would be a fabulous project” said the Fianna Fáil man. “I would ask the Council to do everything possible and help us in every way before it’s too late. The spit at Rossbeigh protects all the low-lying areas. A project needs to be put in place at an early date” added Michael Cahill.

Kerry County Council have confirmed to Councillor Michael Cahill of Fianna Fáil that their Biodiversity Officer will engage with any interested local parties in Rossbeigh with a view to ascertaining what works can be undertaken, having

regard to habitat designations in the Rossbeigh area. Rossbeigh beach and dunes have been severely affected in recent years by erosion and storms, and ten million tons of sand have been relocated from there.

“Rossbeigh sand spit is an enormously important outdoor habitat for wildlife, vegetation and plants, as well as being used by walkers, swimmers, surfers etc, as an amazing outdoor playground. We have a responsibility to protect it in whatever way we can and I would like to see a local grouping formed, to plan for its future” stated local Councillor Michael Cahill.

“People come from far and wide to avail of Rossbeigh’s fresh sea air and beautiful scenery, but I fear if left to its natural cycle, it may disappear altogether. The 100+ year old Navigational Tower collapsed there in 2011, which is not a good omen” said Councillor Cahill.

Creative map of Kilcummin Bog’s past, present and future

Kerry artists Zoe Uí Fhaoláin Green and Emer Fallon are inviting members of the Kilcummin community to join them on Saturday from 12.30pm to 3.30pm at Kilcummin Recreational Hall in creating a visual map of Kilcummin Bog’s past, present and future.

Visitors are invited to pick up a brush or pen and add their unique memory or

vision to the large wall-mounted piece using natural inks and paints made by the artists.

The finished work will feature in an exhibition that also includes multi-media artworks from the children of three local primary schools, a soundscape of thoughts and memories gathered from the community, and a wishing tree. Wetlands expert Thomas Canavan will open Saturday’s session with a talk on

the ecology of peatlands and the biodiversity they support, and then its handson creative time.

The artists would love as many local people as possible to contribute to the mapping session.

“We’re really looking forward to collaborating with everyone and having a bit of fun – just remember to wear old clothes.”

The event takes place as part of the

Pride in our Peatlands artist-led project funded by Kerry County Council with a Creative Ireland grant, which culminates with the showing of the exhibition on October 14, in Kilcummin Recreational Hall.

NASA plans to build house on moon by 2040

It appears that NASA are looking to come up with a solution to the housing crisis with plans to build a house on the moon by 2040.

The American Space Agency awarded a construction technology company $60 million to build a home on the moon by 2040 that would be for not just astronauts but also average civilians and possibly the first AirBnB in space. The plan is to launch a giant 3D printer

to the moon and using raw materials on the surface. NASA is also working with universities and private companies to construct doors, tiles and furniture for the moon home.

Austin-based ICON, awarded the contract by NASA uses its 3D-printing expertise constructing luxury homes layer by layer. The walls and roof are printed separately and then slotted together afterwards. The printer can build

properties in as little as 48 hours. The company has been 3D printing homes since 2018, with over 100 constructed in the US.

Homes built this way have become increasingly popular because they are quick to erect, with developers saying they could solve America's housing crisis.

And NASA sees 3D-printed homes as the next stage in its moon mission.

Homes evacuated as Tenerife wildfire rages

A wildfire raging on Spain’s popular holiday island of Tenerife amid unseasonably hot temperatures has forced the evacuation of around 3,000 people from their homes.

Firefighters backed by water-dropping helicopters were battling the blaze, which broke out on Wednesday in an area of steep ravines in the north-east of the island that was already badly hit by a huge wildfire in August.

Popular tourist areas on Tenerife, part of the Canaries archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, have so far been unaffected and its two airports have been operating normally.

The outbreak of the fire comes as Tenerife and the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria are under a heat alert, with temperatures above 30C, levels normally associated with the summer months.

Rugby Fans - Don’t let the bedbugs bite…

That is the warning to Irish Rugby fans travelling to Paris this weekend.

A plague of bedbugs has hit Paris and other French cities, provoking a wave of insect phobia and raising questions about health and safety ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games. Rugby fans travelling to Paris for the Ireland's Rugby World Cup clash with Scotland on Saturday should remain vigilant.

The number of bedbug sightings has increased over the last weeks and that upward trend goes back several years.

"Every late summer we see a big increase in bedbugs," says Jean-Michel Berenger, an entomologist at Marseille's main hospital. "That is because people have been moving about over July and August, and they bring them back in their luggage.

"And each year, the seasonal increase is bigger than the last one."

One in 10 of Paris flat-dwellers have ex-

perienced bedbugs in the last five years, according to official figures.

President Emmanuel Macron's government are calling for action. It is a measure of how seriously they take the issue - and of how they need to protect the image of Paris.

People have taken to standing when using the Metro and images circulating online of bugs in cinemas have owners worried.

Irish Corporation Tax boom 'over'

Corporation Tax forecast for 2023 is looking to come in short signalling that the recent boom is coming to an end after a second successive monthly fall in corporate tax receipts, Finance Minister Michael McGrath said on Tuesday.

Corporation Tax doubled in the last two years to make up 27% of the entire tax take in 2022, corporate tax receipts mostly paid by Ireland's large hub of big multinational companies were forecast to rise by a further 7% this year. However, Corporation Tax receipts are less in 2023 than forecast in April. Overall Corporation Tax take is 1.5% behind target a week before ministers deliver the budget for 2024. Corporation Tax collected in July, August and September was €3.9 billion, €1.16 billion less than the amount collected in the same period in 2022.

"We have been sounding the warnings for quite some time that this could happen. We're still seeing growth year-onyear but the days of Corporation Tax receipts growing at a really high rate year in, year out we believe are over," McGrath told a news conference. "It does act as a stark reminder that there are dangers here, that these receipts are inherently uncertain and volatile. We certainly can't rely on them for permanent measures, either, in expenditure and taxation."

McGrath indicated that there would be a "levelling off" in Corporation Tax growth in the coming years compared with the modest year-on-year growth most recently forecast out to 2026. He said the fall in the last two months was mainly due to the weaker external economic environment, impacting the exports and profitability of technology and pharmaceutical firms.

Verstappen set to wrap up F1 title in Qatar

The Qatar Grand Prix Sprint is Max Verstappen's first chance to wrap up his third straight World Championship.

He is 177 points clear of Sergio Perez with 180 left on the board, meaning a sixth place finish on Saturday at Lusail will be enough to ensure the trophy stays with him for another year.

When Verstappen does win the title, he will become the 11th driver to win three or more titles, and sixth to be a triple World Champion.

On the current list of those he can match

include Sir Jackie Stewart, Ayrton Senna, Sir Jack Brabham, Niki Lauda and Nelson Piquet

Of course, some drivers have gone beyond the magical three-time threshold, and interestingly, they all but one have something in common with Verstappen. The drivers, apart from Alain Prost, have all won three (or more) titles in a row, with Michael Schumacher's five with Ferrari the all-time record, with seven in total, Lewis Hamilton with seven, Juan Manuel Fangio with five, Alain Prost with four and Sebastian Vettel rounding of the list with four.

That the capital featured third in the friendliest cities in Europe and fourth on the worldwide list was described as “Perhaps an unsurprising inclusion in our readers' list of the friendliest European cities, Dublin is at ease with revelry. From curb-side fiddle-playing to lively nightlife that rages on into the early morning, Ireland's capital seamlessly combines its zest for life with nods to its radical history in the form of landmarks, museums, and the stories told by strangers-turned-friends met along the way.”

Cork topped Dublin in Europe’s friendliest cites. According to the magazine, “Although Cork might be the Republic of Ireland's second-largest city, the port town is even more friendly than the capital, according to our readers. This place has a big personality, an ex-

citing culinary scene, plenty of coffee shops, galleries, museums, and an iconic food market.”

Siena in Italy was named the friendliest city in Europe, described as a "pulsating city full of medieval buildings and lively café-culture".

Helsinki in Finland and Belgrade in Serbia rounded out the top five.

However, the rest of us didn’t fair out to badly with Ireland featuring in the top 10 of friendliest countries worldwide to visit coming in ninth by the magazine’s readers described, “With Ireland topping the poll as the most friendly city in Europe and Dublin making the list for the friendliest city in Europe and the entire world, it's clear that the Irish are a genuinely welcoming bunch. And if the people weren't enough of a draw, there's the legendary convivial atmosphere of Dublin and its buzzing breweries. But it's not just the cities that are worth a visit; dubbed the Emerald Isle thanks to its splendid landscape, there's a wealth of natural beauty to discover, including the Giant's Causeway in County Antrim and the dramatic views from the Cliffs of Moher in the south.”

Former Rally of the Lakes winners to gather for charity event

Rally fans are in for a rare treat later this month when some of the sport’s biggest names will gather for a charity event at Killarney Racecourse.

Killarney and District Motor Club is hosting a night of champions in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation on October 14.

The event will celebrate the Rally of the Lakes association with Prodrive-built cars. The British firm has string links with Subaru and BMW and both marques were the car of choice for several past winners of the local international rally. Several past winners of the rally have already confirmed their attendance at the event.

These include double winners Daragh O’Riordan (2011, 2012) and Tim McNulty (2006 and 2009).

Alastair Fisher will represent his uncle, the late great Bertie, a record six-time winner. Twenty years after his success, Eugene Donnelly is also signed up for the event, as is 2010 winner Denis Cronin. Alongside a questions and answers session on stage in the main auditorium at Killarney Racecourse, and under the watchful eye of legendary rally commentator Alan ‘Plum’ Tyndal, several of the past winners cars will go on static display outside.

Tickets are available from: www.eventbrite.ie

Noel O’Sullivan to compete alongside Kris Meeke

Former WRC ace Kris Meeke is the latest star-name driver to be confirmed for this November’s Roger Albert Clark Rally. The November 23-27 rally is the biggest historic rally in Britain.

The five-time World Rally Championship event winner has asked O’Sullivan to codrive after the Kerry man challenged for the lead of the 2021 rally alongside Osian Pryce.

The crew will drive a freshly built historic specification Ford Escort Mk2 from the Wales Motorsport team on the rally, which will cover 350 stage miles in the forests of Wales, Scotland, and England. Forest special stages in the dark and using organisers’ route notes rather than making their own will be just two of the challenges they will face at the event.

“For sure it's going to be a huge challenge,” Meeke said. “I have a real thing from my childhood for old school rallies and the way it used to be. To say I am excited to do it is an understatement as it has been on my bucket list for a long time, but the opportunity to do it has never presented itself before. This is the culmination of several months of planning with Meirion Evans from Wales Motorsport.”

Meeke, five times a WRC rally winner, added: “A WRC rally is nearly 200 miles in three days, and it is intense. But this is five days, and it is 350 miles. That is what makes it special and the amount of driving in the dark is something special as well. It is going to be a huge challenge and it is going to be awesome.”

Kerry Diocesan Youth Service to get €10,000 in funding

A county-wide charity with a base in Killarney is one of 28 non-profit organisations from across Ireland and Northern Ireland receiving a grant share from this year’s Coca-Cola Thank You Fund.

Among this year's grant recipients are Kerry-based organisations, Kerry Diocesan Youth Service (KDYS) and AK Inspired CLG, both receiving up to €10,000 from the Coca-Cola Thank You Fund; doubled this year to €200K. KDYS is a community-based youth work organisation committed to serving all young people in a safe, fun, and positive environment. This is achieved through the provision of youth spaces, services, mentoring, training, and ongoing opportunities for their holistic development. Overall, 3,500 young people across the island of Ireland will benefit from projects developed to empower them through learning, inclusion, and sustainable development.

Operating in partnership with the Irish Youth Foundation and supporting partners YouthAction Northern Ireland, the Fund invests in community groups that are orientated towards young people, with this year’s theme centred around empowering young people through learning, inclusion, and sustainable de-

velopment.

This year The Coca-Cola Company and its partner Coca-Cola HBC Ireland and Northern Ireland joined forces to double the amount of funding on offer in 2023, making €200,000 in grants available. The significant increase in funding means that the Coca-Cola Thank You Fund can support even more local organisations across the island of Ireland that work tirelessly to champion and empower young people to take an active role in shaping, creating, and maintaining sustainable communities.

“This year, we worked with supporting partners YouthAction Northern Ireland, along with a panel of industry experts, to identify community-based programmes and projects that engaged young people in models of innovative and inclusive practices,” said Lucy Masterson, Chief Executive of the Irish Youth Foundation, operating partners of the Coca-Cola Thank You Fund.

“The standard of applications across the three pillars of learning, inclusion, and sustainable development has been incredibly high. Although it was a challenging process, it was incredibly enlightening and rewarding experience to hear from the vast number of community groups available to support vulnerable young people.”

Capital Gains Tax

Deirdre Vann Bourke, Kerry Citizens Information Manager today gives a brief outline about Capital Gains tax.

“If you make a profit or gain when you dispose of an asset, you pay Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on the chargeable gain. The chargeable gain is usually the difference between the price you paid for the asset and the price you got when you disposed of it. You can deduct allowable expenses such as the cost of acquiring and disposing of the asset.”

Deirdre clarifies “When you dispose of an asset, you must file a tax return for CGT by 31 October of the following year. Although you may file your return the following year, you must pay the Capital Gains Tax in the same year as you dispose of the asset, unless the disposal is in December.”

CAPITAL GAINS THAT ARE EXEMPT

“There are some capital gains that are exempt for example transfers of assets between spouses and civil partners are exempt from Capital Gains Tax. Transfers of assets between spouses and civil partners who are separated are also exempt from Capital Gains Tax if they are made under a Separation Agreement or a court order.

“The transfer of a site from parent to child is exempt if it is to build the child's principal private residence.” Deirdre warns “The land must be less than one acre and have a value of €500,000 or less.”

There is no Capital Gains Tax on assets that are passed on death. The assets are treated as if the person who died got the assets at the same value they have on the date of death. If a personal representative disposes of the assets, they are responsible for any gains between the date of the person’s death and the date of disposal.

PRINCIPAL PRIVATE RESIDENCE RELIEF

relative to use as their sole residence. There are some restrictions to Principal Private Residence Relief, including that you can only claim the relief for:

• The part of the house that you used as your home

• The time you lived in the property, with some exceptions including for the last 12 months of ownership and absences for work or health reasons

• The value of the property as you currently use it, rather than for development potential

OTHER EXEMPTIONS

Other exemptions from Capital Gains Tax include gains from:

• Betting, lotteries, sweepstakes and prize bonds

• Bonuses payable under the National Instalments Savings Schemes

• Government stocks

• Certain life assurance policies

• Moveable property, if the gain is €2,540 or less

• Animals

• Private motor cars.

• Rate and payment of Capital Gains Tax

The standard rate of Capital Gains Tax is 33% of the chargeable gain you make. A rate of 40% can apply to the disposal of certain foreign life assurance policies and units in offshore funds and for certain windfall gains the windfall gains rate of tax is 80%.

DEDUCTIONS

You can deduct allowable expenses from the chargeable gain, including: Money you spent that adds value to the asset

Costs to acquire and dispose of the asset (for example solicitor fees). You may also be able to deduct an allowable loss you made in the same tax year. The first €1,270 of taxable gains in a tax year are exempt from CGT. If you are married or in a civil partnership, this exemption is available to each spouse or civil partner but it is not transferable.”

Conrad-Jones, Co-founder of Pocket Forests; Lucy Masterson, Chief Executive Irish Youth Foundation; joined Agnese Filippi, Country Manager of Coca-Cola Ireland to celebrate the announcement that Pocket Forests and other community organisations received a grants made available through the Coca-Cola Thank You Fund. Young athlete Ryan wins Youth award

Ryan Griffin is a member of the Skellig Stars and was chosen to represent Kerry at the Special Olympics.

Ryan's biggest hurdle is communication and he had to overcome this during his trip to Berlin for the big event.

Ryan has overcome his disabilities by focusing on all the great abilities he has. Ryan attends mainstream school in Coláiste na Sceilge where he is a very respected member of the School Community. He is a member of Kerry Stars and also Downs Syndrome Kerry.

Ryan has always had a keen interest in sport and even played with the local team in Waterville, but now Ryan thinks it's too fast for him so he prefers to cheer them on from the side-lines.

Ryan has always been involved with the Community and they have never left him out. Ryan started out his athletics career with Skellig Stars and without them he would have gone to the Special Olympics and he has never forgotten when he came from.

Ryan and his family are very grateful to the local community in Waterville and the surrounding area for all the support they have given them over the years and especially now with the Special Olympics coming closer.

The whole community from Waterville to Mid-Kerry got behind Ryan, raising funds to help his family go to Berlin for 2 weeks. Ryan is now an inspiration to

others to overcome difficulties and "go for gold".

Ryan was the only representative from Kerry on this years Irish Special Olympics Team and in fact one of the Youngest Athletes on Team Ireland at only 16yrs of age, which was a great honour for him. This in itself is a great achievement but it also shows his friends at Skellig Stars, Downs Syndrome Kerry and in the wider community that dreams do come true. It took a lot of hard work and determination on Ryan’s behalf to make these dreams come true, not least the long journey he had to make from South Kerry to Dublin once a month since last January to train for the Special Olympics. He also trained weekly with the Skellig Stars.

At the 2023 Special Olympics in Berlin Ryan took part in the 100m run and the relay but his biggest achievement was winning the Silver Medal in the mini javelin. This showed others that overcoming difficulties can be possible and you can achieve your goals with hard work and determination, which Ryan has in abundance.

Tricel joins Killarney Coffee Cup Project

The company is raising awareness about environmental sustainability.

Over the coming weeks, each member of staff at the Tiernaboul company will receive a “2GoCup”, marking the company's ban on single-use cups.

According to Mike Stack, Tricel's CEO, “The Killarney Coffee Cup Project contributes to the reduction of single-use plastic waste and the promotion of sustainability. With reusable cups, Tricel is committed to a cleaner, greener future for Killarney. This will hopefully create a ripple effect that encourages other busi-

nesses and communities to follow suit." Providing reusable cups requires an initial investment; however, Tricel believes it will lead to savings in the long term. Other initiatives adopted by the company include installing Ireland's largest combined Heat Pump and Solar PV system, which will dramatically reduce their carbon footprint, and dedicating 140 square meters to a wildflower garden at its Killarney headquarters to attract a variety of pollinators, increasing biodiversity and contributing to the health of the local ecosystem.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. BT

O Glorious St. Joseph, Faithful father of Jesus to you do we raise our hearts and hands to implore the Sacred Heart of Jesus all the helps and graces necessary for our special favours. Especially the grace of a happy death and the special favours we now ask. St. Joseph pray for us.

Death is nothing at all I have only slipped away to the next room I am I and you are you Whatever we were to each other That, we still are.

Call me by my old familiar name Speak to me in the easy way which you always used Put no difference into your tone Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effect Without the trace of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same that it ever was. There is absolute unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you. For an interval.

Somewhere. Very near. Just around the corner. All is well. Nothing is past; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before only better, infinitely happier and forever we will all be one together with Christ.

Ní Mhuircheartaigh up for top honour

Kerry star shortlisted for Footballer of the Year award

After leading the Kingdom to another All-Ireland final in 2023, veteran forward Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh could be in line for the game’s top individual honour. The West Kerry woman has been shortlisted for the LGFA Football Player of the Year award with the winner to be announced at TG4 All-Star Awards banquet at The Bonnington Dublin Hotel on Saturday, November 18.

Dublin duo Leah Caffrey and Jennifer Dunne make up the trio of nominees alongside Ní Mhuircheartaigh, who de-

spite her many years of excellence is bidding to win the award for the first time. Ní Mhuircheartaigh, a three-time and current All-Star, finished as leading scorer in the 2023 All-Ireland series with a haul of 3-31, having also topped the 2022 scoring charts at senior level. She was nominated for the Senior Players’ Player of the Year Award in 2022 and she was in scintillating form again this year as Kerry landed the National League Division 1 title before advancing to a second successive All-Ireland Senior final.

Kerry’s star player scored 1-7 in the final against Dublin but it wasn’t enough to deny the Sky Blues a first title since 2020. Ní Mhuircheartaigh is also one of 13 Kerry players in contention for an All-Star award. Ciara Butler, Kayleigh Cronin, Eilís Lynch, Emma Costello, Cáit Lynch, Aishling O’Connell, Louise Galvin, Lorraine Scanlon, Niamh Carmody and Anna Galvin have also been longlisted. Meanwhile, the nominees for the men’s Footballer of the Year award have also been revealed with Kerry’s David Clif-

ford, Dublin’s Brian Fenton and Derry’s Brendan Rogers all getting the nod. Along with Clifford, eight other members of Jack O’Connor’s team also nominated for All-Stars: Shane Ryan, Jason Foley, Tom O’Sullivan, Tadhg Morley, Gavin White, Diarmuid O’Connor, Seánie O’Shea and Paudie Clifford.

The PwC All-Stars will be presented with their awards at a gala black-tie event which will be staged in Dublin’s RDS and shown live on RTÉ on Friday, November 17.

The St Paul’s men’s and women’s teams got their respective National League Division 1 campaigns up and running with a double-header in Carlow on Sunday last and they came home to Killarney with one impressive win and one disappointing yet encouraging defeat.

The Utility Trust St Paul’s ladies overcame the hosts, SETU Carlow, on an emphatic scoreline of 83-50 with new American signing Jess Huber racking up a whopping 35 points. Coach James Fleming was without the services of several GAA-tied players like Rheanne O’Shea, Leah McMahon, Lorraine Scanlon, Denise Dunlea and Cliona Coffey so the manner of the victory will no doubt be encouraging to him and his backroom team.

Huber dropped in 14 first-quarter points as the home team struggled to keep in touch early on. They trailed by 14 at half-time (40-26) and with Niamh Ní Chonchúir, Alexa Naessens and Lynn Jones to the fore, the Killarney side accelerated even further ahead in the second half.

When Huber nailed the final basket of the game – a three-pointer – Paul’s led by 33 points. The squad can be pleased with this opening day win; it serves as an early marker of their intentions for the 2023/24 season.

ST PAUL’S SCORERS: Jess Huber 35, Alexa Naessens 12, Niamh Ní Chonchúir 10, Lynn Jones 9, Meabh Barry 7, Mary Kate Smith 7, Tara Donnellan 3.

LAKERS

The St Paul’s men’s team, operating under the Scotts Lakers banner, also took on SETU Carlow on Sunday but they were unable to make it a double as they fell to a 12-point defeat (99-87).

Despite losing, the away team played with a competitive spirit, structure and purpose that could have led to a more fruitful outcome. They trailed by

11 points at half-time (61-50) but they came back into contention by the end of the third with new signings Terion Moss (25 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists) and Braden Bell (28 points, 8 rebounds) leading the way.

The deficit was just three points in the closing seconds of the period when a controversial buzzer-beater, plus a free throw, was awarded to Carlow.

Now trailing by six, the Lakers fought

hard at the start of the fourth quarter, but the home side managed to plough ahead and capture the points. Nevertheless it was a positive enough start for the Lakers with several young local players showing what they’re capable of. Jack O’Sullivan scored 13 points, Paul Clarke played a captain’s role and Jamie O’Sullivan also caught the eye. Ronan Collins will have benefitted from his first outing in a while and

Mark Sheehan and Eoin O’Carroll added to their burgeoning reputations. Young Chris Healy made his National League debut while Oisín Spring again saw court time.

SCOTTS LAKERS SCORERS: Braden Bell 28, Terion Moss 25, Jack O’Sullivan 13, Paul Clarke 7, Jamie O’Sullivan 7, Eoin O’Carroll 6, Ronan Collins 1.

SATURDAY

Both St Paul’s teams are in action at home at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday. The St Paul’s ladies host the Limerick Celtics 4.30pm and the Lakers will take on the Limerick Sport Eagles at the same venue at 7.30pm.

The Eagles will be a tough assignment; they have brought in Da’Kquan Davis and Keelen Coats, two quality players who combined for 68 points in their opening night win over the Titans.

DYNAMIC DUO: Alexa Naessens and Jess Huber who combined for 47 points in their side's big win at the Barrow Centre.

LAKERS: The St Paul's Scotts Lakers squad who travelled to Carlow to take on SETU Carlow.

‘I wouldn’t cross the road to see a football match’

Our columnist Eamonn Fitzgerald was in the Fitzgerald Stadium last weekend when a fellow spectator declared that he won’t be back to watch another game. Here’s why.

‘Yer Man’ was on a rant on the terrace in the Park and didn’t even notice the majestic panorama of the MacGillycuddy Reeks all the way around to the Paps of Danu, the mother of the gods of Ireland on the Cork/Kerry border.

He had his back to the lacklustre football game being played out below us at the Fitzgerald Stadium and this was a win or bust championship game. It didn’t matter championship or otherwise, with the same predictable team strategies. He was on a rant and there was no stopping him. Here is the gist of it.

“I wouldn’t cross the road anymore to see a club football match and that goes for Kerry too.”

You wonder should you intervene for a bit of devilment, and a diversion from the boring, deadpan game down below.

An idle mind is the devil's workshop. Hell is empty and all the devils were here on the Michael O’Connor Terrace. But you are here at a match in the Park, I

said.

“Don’t mind that now. I won’t be here for the next match, and I’ll tell you why.”

He’s off on an extended rant. Silence is golden and it is never misquoted. “They have destroyed football. It’s no longer football. The game is about using the foot, not this tippy-tappy hand-passing the ball across the field. And most of the time they are pedalling backwards. Are they afraid, or is anyone of them able to shoot a point except the likes of Clifford and O’Shea? Is there anyone around that will grab that ball, turn and kick it over the bar inside the 50?”

You dare not interrupt and inform him that the 50 has gone out of the game with decades. Now it is the 45. But ‘Yer Man’ is the quintessential traditionalist, sticking to the yards, ignoring the metric age. He has one eye on the game.

HANDPASSES

“Here we go now watch this. I’ll count

them out for you. Look at Team X.” (Unnamed to preserve anonymity. Discretion is the better option. Let him continue.)

“You see now A handpasses to B, on to C, back to A. No wonder they have 26 letters in the alphabet to count all the hand-passes. They’re just inside the 50. God be with Pat Spillane in his heyday. He’d fire that over in one direct movement and I can remember Tadhgie Lyne coming out to the 50 and with one graceful movement he’d swing the ball not alone over the bar, but over the black spot. And d’you know why? Well, I’ll tell you.”

He’s in full steam and specks of froth are beginning to emerge on the extremities of his mouth.

“In the ‘55 All-Ireland final they all said Kerry had no hope against the Dublin Machine of Freaney, Heffo, Mickey Whelan, Snitchie Ferguson and Charlie’s brother, Jock Haughey. Yet Kerry’s traditional catch and kick won the Sam Maguire, the sweetest win of ‘em all. (Tadhgie) Lyne scored six of the Kerry total of 12 points.”

He drew a breath for the first time, and

I added: “In that final another young Killarney garsún aged just 19 years old won the first of his five All-Ireland medals, the great 87-year-old Johnny Culloty who is still going strong like the two Mickos in Waterville and Valentia. In the week leading up to the final, Tadhgie Lyne spent hours kicking a ball through a suspended tyre in the Lyne garage on High Street. He spent the evenings above in the Park on his own, dropping those high, long-range kicks from all angles over the black spot.”

“I didn’t know about the tyres. Jaysus, Lyne was mighty,” he replied.

SPILLANE

I said he must be a great fan of Pat Spillane from the Golden Years.

“Him, is it? I don’t believe half of what he said on The Sunday Game and even more so what he writes in that whatdo-you-call-it paper. But I can tell you one thing, he was dead right to call the Tyrone crowd’s tactics ‘puke football’. Sure, that’s not football at all and it went from bad to worse. You puke when your body rejects the type of bad food you eat or after bad porter. Yes, Spillane was

right, Tyrone football is sick, and Mickey Harte will only spread the disease in Derry quicker than Covid.

“Now we have the same disease here in the Park in the club games. There’s a whole new lingo like ‘swarming’, recycle, turnovers, working the ball around, and score assists.”

But sure, Jack O’Connor has a Tyrone man as a defensive coach and Paddy Tally has been reappointed to the Kerry management for the next year, I offered.

“Haven’t we enough sensible football men in Kerry, the home of football, to do what we have to do to win All-Irelands. Who did Dr Eamonn have only himself and a few selectors? I see they have psychologists now in their backroom teams. Dr Eamonn had the whole lot in the one great head of his.

“The Doctor trained eight All-Ireland winning teams, as did O’Dwyer. He also did everything himself, giving us Kerry’s Golden Years. Now they have all kinds of fellas as physios and would you believe it assistant physios. There isn’t even room for all of them in the dugout.”

I pointed out that there are great women doing mighty work with GAA teams. That really got him going; misogynistic Ireland is still not dead and gone. He was winding up to fire an errant missile and wasn’t ashamed to say so, but a big cheer from the crowd diverted his attention to the scenario on the field. One of the goalkeepers was caught stranded beyond his own 45. His pass had been intercepted and you know the rest.

“Do you see that for codology? You should know that a goalkeeper should stay inside around the square.”

COMMENTATORS

Is it a square, or a parallelogram?

Micheál O’Hehir always said, ‘the ball is landing in the Kerry parallelogram’.

“God rest you, Micheál O’Hehir. You were the best of them all and only our own Micheál from Dingle could touch you. As for the so-called commentators nowadays, it is all statistics and analysis. They don’t know what they are talking about. A crowd of us were on the lump with Murphy in ’55 and we left the Crown travelling out about a mile to get the best reception (radio) from a telegraph pole.

“Aren’t there enough of fellows out the field to belt the ball to the forwards. The game has gone to hell since all those PT fellas came out of that college in Limerick with their degrees and fancy theories on how football should be modernised. They brought in too much of the basketball, volleyball and soccer into our native game.”

But every game evolves, and football is no different. What is wrong with today’s game?

“What’s wrong with it? What’s right with it? Cusack would turn in his grave if he were here today.”

Over to you readers. What’s wrong with present day football, that is turning off so many diehard supporters? What changes should be made to make the present game more attractive? If any of you wish to comment or contribute your tuppence worth, email fitzgeraldfam48@gmail.com.

Ladies final a repeat of 2022

The Kerry LGFA Senior Football Championship final will be a repeat of the 2022 decider between the two very strong divisional board teams.

Holders Southern Gaels will be firm favourites to defeat Finuge/St Senan’s once more. The latter beat Dr Crokes 5-7 to 3-9 at Mountcoal on Sunday last, but that four-point defeat doesn’t convey the great fight Crokes put up in this their first year playing senior after winning the intermediate title, and promotion, in 2022. Crokes led in Mountcoal on several occasions during this game thanks to the performances of so many, including

former Kerry player Amanda Brosnan, young Leah McMahon and top scorer Kate Stack (2-3). They were well in contention until they conceded a 41st minute goal. The powerful North Kerry squad kicked on from there. Meanwhile it has been confirmed that Kerry ladies managers Declan Quill and Darragh Long will be staying on for the 2024 season.

I spoke to a member of Kerry LGFA recently who was worried that they might face next season without the two Tralee boys as managers but both Quill and Long will return to the fold as the team bids to win that elusive All-Ireland.

Killarney girls shine at Limerick tournament

On Saturday last the U18 girls teams from Killarney RFC, Tuam/ Oughterard and Port Dara (an amalgamation of Cill Dara and Portarlington) took part in a 15-a-side tournament hosted by Old Crescent RFC at Takumi Park, Limerick.

Facilities and pitches at Old Crescent were excellent, but weather conditions in the morning were challenging for rugby with a lot of rain and a strong breeze. Despite this, the three teams served up a very close and entertaining series of games with great skill and endeavour on display.

The format was three round robin games of 35 minutes and first up was Killarney v Tuam/Oughterard. The two sides were

evenly matched in a physical contest that looked like it might finish scoreless until Tuam’s Keannagh Irons capitalised on a rare Killarney handling error inside their 22 to cross for a try and give her side the win (0–5).

Next, Killarney faced Port Dara in a game that was a real display of hard-running, offloading rugby. Port Dara took the lead with an unconverted Ellie White try but Killarney levelled with Niamh Dorrian finishing a good team move. Fia Whelan slotted the conversion to secure a 7–5 win for the Kerry side.

The final match saw Port Dara take on Tuam/Oughterard in another close, endto-end contest with scoring opportunities created by both sides. The Connacht outfit proved more clinical in converting

It’s all on the line for high flying Irish rugby team

Having established themselves as the dominant force in Pool B following impressive victories over Romania, Tonga and South Africa, Ireland are expected to qualify for the knockout phase of the World Cup by defeating Scotland on Saturday. However, somewhat incredibly, a disastrous group stage elimination is still a possibility.

In short, a win or a draw or two bonus points (a bonus point is awarded to a team if they score four or more tries, and/or if they lose by seven points or less) would be enough to see Owen Farrell’s men through as group winners. But if they lose to Scotland by eight or more without claiming a bonus point, the Scots will go through and the top-

ranked team in World rugby will be coming home prematurely.

The most likely outcome is that Ireland defeat Scotland (as they have done in the previous eight encounters between the sides) and top the group, with South Africa qualifying for the last eight as group runners-up.

This will tee up two tantalising quarter-final match-ups: South Africa versus the hosts, France, and Ireland versus the All Blacks.

Irish centre Robbie Henshaw is facing a race against time to be fit for the crunch Ireland-Scotland tie in Paris.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, forwards coach Paul O’Connell confirmed that "Robbie has a bit of a niggle”. Ireland v Scotland takes place on Saturday at 8pm Irish time.

their chances and tries from Irons and Ailbhe Gannon plus a conversion from Chloe Conneely gave them a 12-0 victory.

After the tournament all three squads enjoyed a trip to Thomond Park for the Munster v Barbarians double-header and they were treated to really exciting try fests in both games.

Speaking after the games, Killarney coach Josh Whelan said the event was a “great opportunity” for his squad to get a run out against quality opposition from Leinster and Connacht.

“The girls really enjoyed it and we’re sure it will serve as great preparation for our regular season games starting in October. It was great to connect with players and coaches from outside Munster, and from what I saw this morning I’d say the future

of female rugby in Ireland should be in a good place. The standard of rugby played by all three teams in difficult conditions was really high.”

Killarney RFC extends their gratitude to Owen Lydon and Marie Hayes for refereeing and to Old Crescent RFC for hosting.

Killarney Legion GAA

MOLYNEAUX CUP FINAL: A tough day in the office for our Senior B Team as they never really got to grips with the game played in Fossa. Dr Crokes provided the opposition and overall possessed a better control of the game and they rarely looked in trouble. Making the stronger start they led by 0-5 to 0-2 before they were reduced to fourteen men in the closing moments of the first half. We made the better start to the second period and closed the gap to two points, 0-6 to 0-4, and looked poised to challenge. But our rivals slipped in for a goal and despite a battling performance and a numerical advantage we wouldn't put any further dents into their lead. Final score Killarney Legion 0-6 Dr Crokes 1-9. The game was well refereed by Gerry Kelliher, who arrived with a full complement of umpires and linesmen (both qualified referees), definitely giving the competition full respect.

SENIOR LADIES: Our Senior ladies played their Junior B championship quarter final on a glorious Sunday morning at Direen where Glenflesk provided the opposition for the 11am

throw in. A tight opening half saw Legion with the advantage on a scoreline of 2-04 to 1-04. Unfortunately Ciara Doolan went off with a bad ankle injury midway through the half and we wish her a speedy recovery. The second half continued as the first had played out with both teams competing fiercely. Glenflesk came forward and scored some fine points and always looked dangerous, but the home defence remained resolute throughout defending stoically. At the other end the attack plundered another couple of goals which made all the difference at the final whistle. With time running out and leading by 3 points we managed the game out to the final whistle. Final score Legion 4-05 Glenflesk 1-11. The semi-final takes place this weekend.

U11 BOYS: The last game of 2023 for our two U11 teams who played superb against a strong and determined Rathmore side on Thursday evening in Direen. Big thanks to John Keane and Donal O’Donoghue for their efforts this year. Oisin Fleming for his excellent refereeing all season and to Brian Looney for also stepping up to referee for the night. Big thanks to the players and their parents for showing up and giving it their all week after week.

U15 BOYS: Our U15 Boys hosted Kenmare for a place in the East Kerry Championship semi-final. The game was keenly fought with very little between the teams. They opened the scoring with 2 points into the wind but a Kenmare goal on the quarter put the visitors into a lead. Not rattled they managed a great goal with a good move down the left and this left the score at half time Legion 1-7 Kenmare 1-3 3. Kenmare played well into the breeze in the second half with some well taken frees to close the gap. However the cushion of a second goal gave the lads a bit of comfort and although Kenmare brought the game to the final whistle, we held on to secure a semi-final spot, which will be played in two weeks’ time.

SENIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 1:19 St. Brendan’s 0:11. Our final game in the 2023 County Championship was a positive one as we defeated our opponents by double scores. St. Brendan’s started quick, winning the throw in and subsequently scoring the game’s first point through George Bastible. We were unlucky not to get a goal early on when Cian McMahon’s effort was brilliantly saved by the St. Brendan’s keeper. It took until the 6th minute for David Shaw to step up and kick our opening score of the day. First half points coming from Shane Murphy, David Shaw, Mikey Casey, Tony Brosnan and Michael Potts gave us a four-point lead at the break, 9 points to 5 points. We played our best football in the second half and outscored our opponents 1:10 to 0:06. Our goal came mid-way though the half when Brian Looney shot a rocket passed Michael Tansley to raise the green flag. It was great to see Daithi Casey and Neil O’Shea introduced throughout the half.

MOLYNEAUX CUP FINAL: Dr. Crokes 1:09 Legion 0:06. We retained the Molyneaux cup for the 11th year in a row after defeating our neighbours Legion on Saturday last in Fossa.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

COMPETITION: Our final competition for 2023, the Tom Bambury Memorial competition, which is an annual fundraiser for the great services provided at St. Francis Special School in Beaufort, was fished last Sunday the 01st of October. A great turn out of anglers ensured a good day on the shore to begin with and indeed great competition on the lake, especially given the recent rise in level that brought on some good trout. The competition was kindly sponsored Michael Twohig, of Twohig’s

Supervalu Kanturk and was won by Tim O’Connor - the top 5 rods on the day were as follows: 1) Tim O’Connor, 2) Mick Kelleher + Boris Uzik, 3) Liam Buckley, 4) Dermot Mahoney. Heaviest trout went to the rod of Willie Maloney. Following on from the competition, we are now delighted to be able to send on €700 to St. Francis school principal, Mr. Keith O’Brolachain. As this was the last competition, our final distribution of points took place for the hotly contested angler of the year - the final tally could not have been closer with Steve Cambell winning out over Liam Buckley by only 1/2 a point to claim the Jeremy O’Neill Memorial shield! Also decided was heaviest trout of the year, with Dan O’Connor wining the John Mannix Cup this year. All prizes will be presented in the East Avenue Hotel, at our annual dinner, on Saturday the 21st of October.
