In what is a huge boost to the local economy, one of the major worldwide players in the sports fashion retail industry is setting up shop in Killarney.

Global leisurewear style giant JD Sports is to open a new store at Killarney Outlet Centre in the coming weeks and the breaking news is generating great excitement in the town.

The development will create over 15 new jobs, both full-time and part-time, and it is expected to generate a very significant footfall given the popularity of the brand. JD will open in a prime 7,400sq ft store on the ground floor. The exciting new addition will focus on the provision of the latest trends from the biggest brands in sportswear, ensuring it will have a magnet-like lure for sports enthusiasts and fashion-conscious shoppers.

The arrival of JD is a significant milestone in the regeneration of Killarney Outlet Centre as it follows very soon after the opening of the 4,734sq ft Born Fashions and the 1,617sq ft Mods and Minis premises. The new owners of the centre have been working extremely hard on the project and are confident that there will be further significant retail announcements in the coming months.

A spokesperson said that they are delighted with the progress made to date and the arrival of JD is a huge endorsement of Killarney Outlet Centre.

Centre and we will be unveiling exciting plans for both floors in the very near future,” Mr Sherry said.

about reviewing the ground floor voids and working with partners to develop circa 20,000sq ft of space on the first floor which, in time, will completely re-energize the Killarney Outlet Centre,” the spokesperson for the owners said. Killarney Outlet Centre Manager, Paul Sherry, said the imminent arrival of JD is great news for Killarney and it has generated a real air of anticipation and excitement.

“It is a hugely positive news story and the centre – located adjacent to the rail and bus stations – is delighted to share this news,” he remarked.

“As a retail destination, we have made tremendous strides in recent months with the opening of the new Born store and the return of Mods and Minis and that is only the start of it.

“The arrival of JD will mark the beginning of a glorious new era for Killarney Outlet

Music is right down Killarney’s street

The public street sound system installed in the centre of Killarney has been hailed as a great success by the parties involved.

The system brings appropriate, properly-pitched music to the streets and it certainly creates a great ambience as people go about their business each day.

The initiative is funded by Kerry County Council through the Community Support

Fund and it is fully backed by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.

It involved the installation of speakers strategically placed in the town centre.

The idea was first mooted at a meeting of Killarney Municipal District Council where councillors felt it would create a welcoming and positive atmosphere in the town centre.

The proposal had been explored several times previously and it was felt that such

a development would greatly enhance the town centre core.

Funding options were explored and officials agreed that a public sound system would be a meritorious project.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce Senior Executive, Bridget O’Keeffe, said the feedback from the public and from businesses had been hugely favourable and that it added a great atmosphere in the town centre.

Established in the UK in 1981, JD has a long and successful history in the sportswear industry and the company has grown to become one of the largest and most recognisable sports retailers in the world, with over 900 stores across multiple continents, stocking all the major brands.

Coffee cup scheme brings positivity to Killarney

about the amount of participants and the communications piece. It is worth noting that we have exceeded expectations.”

FUTURE BENEFITS

A meeting between scheme organisers and Ossian Smyth the Minister of State with responsibility for Public Procurement, eGovernment and Circular Economy heard how the project has been well-received locally and nationally.

Killarney became the first town in Ireland to be single use coffee cup free in July. The scheme will remove over 1 million single use coffee cups from the town annually.

The Killarney Coffee Cup Project was launched in July and since then it has generated massive publicity and good will for the town and surrounding areas.

SIX MILLION PEOPLE

This week’s meeting heard that the PR drive behind the project reached over 6 million people.

This doesn’t take into account the social media: views for Paschal Sheehy’s RTE report were 470,000 views across Tik Tok and Instagram.

“Our recent PR campaign has not only brought well-deserved exposure to Killarney but also resulted in a valuation that reflects the undeniable benefits the PR for being part of the project brings to small businesses that often don't receive such recognition,” said Louise Byrne, one of the projects organisers.

“Our accomplishments have not gone unnoticed. The level of publicity the project has received really highlights the importance of what we are doing. Considering

the effects of climate change we are seeing every day when we turn on the news, people are really ready to welcome an initiative that they can easily get involved in by making a simple manageable change to their daily behaviour.”

The organisers hired a dedicated PR firm to manage publicity and to promote the scheme locally and internationally.

Drury said they have never worked on something that travelled this strongly and positively – for Killarney to get this level of profile and positivity for doing the right thing is extraordinary and will likely never happen again,” added Ms Byrne.

“Journalists very rarely want to cover ‘old news’ – for the likes of Newstalk Breakfast, RTÉ News at One and the Daily Mail to be interested in covering this well after the launch demonstrates how strongly this has landed. And that isn’t because we have PRd well rather it is because it is just an incredible thing that a collective of businesses have bravely decided to do.”

EXPANSION

Since the July launch , more and more business have come on board to support the scheme.

“On the first night we started with 14 businesses and as we stand here today, we can proudly say that we've grown to over 50 businesses, a testament to the power of collaboration,” added Ms Byrne.

“As we started out we as a group expressed that we were initially concerned

The organisers have been contacted by the Global Destination Sustainability movement.

“This is an international recognition of our efforts. The GDS movement has a yearly index of sustainable destinations, and the project has been added to this year's application for Kerry. They have contacted us to be submitted to their annual awards that recognizes initiatives that are paving the way for a sustainable world, and it's an honour to be considered,” she added.

“But the reach of our initiative goes beyond Killarney. Dingle, Tralee, and other county councils have expressed interest in implementing our model countywide. This validates that our impact isn't limited to our local community, but has the potential to create a ripple effect across regions, which we saw when we were contacted by other county councils and even two international destinations.”

OUTSIDE INTEREST

“This initiative is ground-breaking, with its scope and target effects reaching farther than we expected. While challenges are inevitable, there are teething problems with any new venture, they are opportunities for growth and improvement,” said Byrne.

“Furthermore, the idea was proposed to create a training video for businesses and staff. This should include the best practices and learnings into a comprehensive training video that benefits both you and

your staff when it comes to implementing the project effectively. It should include the why’s and how’s of the project based on your collective learnings and feedback.

“We need to do an inventory of cups that were ordered by all businesses to date and what is currently in stock. This will be done to ensure that we are maximising the deposit system and not always ordering more cups. It was noted that hotels often offer take away breakfast to tourists and there is a risk that the cups go away on buses and aren’t returned.”

“Communicating with travel agents and the bus drivers is key to ensure that this issue is resolved. Again if the message is that this is a whole of Killarney initiative and standard practice, it will be more accepted.”

TOWN TALK

Killarney Races hosted Kellihers Toyota Ladies Day on Saturday which increased the glamour stakes as fashionistas brought the curtain down on AugustFest in stunning style. Fashion savvy racegoers turned out in their droves to compete for the covetable title of Kellihers Toyota Best Dressed Lady. The fashion was fierce and judge Jennifer Wynne had a tough challenge selecting her finalists.

Serena Delaney was the lucky lady deemed most stylish on the day. From Upper Park Road in Killarney, Serena’s stunning look was a beautiful Sister Jayne dress combined with a stunning Marc Millinery headpiece. She teamed her stunning look with bright pink heels and a bag from Zara to tie the entire look together and completed it beautifully with gold accessories.

Serena Delaney said: “I'm absolutely thrilled, I've never won anything in my life.

“I really appreciate winning Best Dressed Lady on Kelliher’s Toyota Ladies Day at Killarney Races it's the only Ladies Day we ever attend and to be selected as winner was just the icing on the cake!

A new mural that has “transformed a dreary area" was officially unveiled this week in a Killarney estate.

The Ballydribeen Residents Association commissioned artist Deborah O'Keefe to create a mural in in the estate. The mural depicts animals and flowers found in the local area, especially along the river Denagh, which flows adjacent to the Ballydribeen estates.

The Ballydribeen Residents Association hope that this will draw attention to the great amenity of the river and its biodiversity value. The mural has nine panels, two metres tall and five metres wide. Each panel has a different scene.

“This mural totally brightened up a long

dreary grey wall and completely transformed the area. It also created a lovely community spirit as the local children and residents were invited to participate in helping Deborah with the painting,” said Jannie Prins of the Ballydribeen Residents Association.

“Deborah has done a fantastic job and has received so many wonderful comments.

“Our thanks go out to Creative Ireland, the Community Support Fund and Kerry County Council who made this possible in providing the funding.

Calls on RSA to examine increasing road fatalities Bishop calls upon diocese to unite faith and nature

Deputy Michael Healy Rae TD is calling on the Government to ensure the Road Safety Authority (RSA) look beyond the data and explore all possible factors when tackling the ever-increasing number of road fatalities in Ireland.

Last year saw an increase of 14% of fatalities on 2021 with 156 recorded deaths from 150 road collisions and already this year the RSA have confirmed 100 deaths on the road (as of August 1, 2023) A worrying increase of 11 fatalities compared to the same date last year.

“Last year 45 people lost their lives on Irish roads between October – December, with 17 road deaths recorded in November 2022 alone.

“Over the years we have seen the increase on the deterrents for speeding, alcohol and substance use while driving and even a doubling of penalty points, but the RSA must look beyond that data and find what other contributing factors

are out there. I think it is time to look at road structures, dangerous junctions, lack of road signage and warnings as other factors in road deaths.

“Data made available from a Preliminary Analysis of Road Traffic Fatalities by the RSA (as of July 26 2023) highlighted a number of worrying trends.

Deputy Michael Healy Rae TD said his heart has gone out to the families in the most recent tragic road traffic fatalities in county Tipperary and said we needed the RSA ensure they spread their net wider when tackling road safety.

Bishop Ray Browne has called upon parishes across Kerry to support the Season of Creation, marked throughout the Christian world from today, September 1 to October 4 (Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi).

The season celebrates the joy of creation and encourages awareness-raising initiatives to protect the natural environment.

Last March the Catholic bishops of Ireland set the challenge that parishes would return 30% of church grounds to nature by 2030, and to care for this as a haven for pollinators and biodiversity, that can be enjoyed by the whole community.

Bishop Browne said: “We are called to join the river of justice and peace, to take up climate and ecological justice, and to speak out with and for communities most impacted by climate injustice and the loss of biodiversity. In many parts of the world, it is the poorest of peoples who suffer most because of disastrous effects of climate change. Many migrants

coming to Europe do so because climate change has destroyed their livelihoods at home, some through successive seasons with no rain, some through excessive rainfall and floods that has washed away their homes and possessions. Climate change, biodiversity and poverty challenge every part of Ireland too.”

Many parishes have already scheduled events for this season, including:

September 1 : St John’s Tralee ‘Care of Creation Group Gathering’ at Millennium Park, (Beside Lidl) Castlemaine Road at 11.00am

September 12: St Brendan’s Parish Tralee @ 7pm, Walk in Parish Grounds 27th September: Showing the film THE LETTER in Fossa Church at 7.30pm

September 30: Killorglin Parish Gathering in collaboration with the Diocesan JPIC Committee @11am, Parish Garden, (behind the church)

October 11: Showing the film ‘The Letter’ in St. John’s Theatre, The Square, Listowel at 11.30am.

Back to back Ring of Kerry and Beara cycle challenge for Crumlin

A group of Killarney cyclists are set to tackle both the Ring of Kerry and Ring of Beara on consecutive days to raise funds for Crumlin Children’s Hospital.

The Breakaway Pedlars will cycle both routes on Friday and Saturday next week.

They are doing it to support the family of two of its members who son was diagnosed with a life threatening heart disease in December 2021.

Fionn O’Donoghue-Sheehan was diagnosed at University Hospital Kerry by Dr Kumar. He was immediately transferred to Crumlin’s Children’s Hospital and both actions saved his life.

“From the moment we arrived in Crumlin I felt safe. We quickly settled in and a series of test began. Dr Prendiville my cardiologist was fantastic. He explained everything to us and made sure I could understand. Many doctors came to hear about my symptoms as they found my description very interesting. I was diagnosed with VT ventricular tachycardia an irregular heart rhythm with unknown cause,” said Fionn.

“Dr Prendiville explained to us that I was very lucky that Dr Kumar had realised

VAT increase will lead to restaurant closures

The Restaurants Association of Ireland has described the move by the Government to increase the 9% VAT rate to 13% as nonsensical and will close the doors on many low margin restaurants, cafes and food led pubs across the state.

The increase came into effect at midnight on September 1.

The move will add to consumer inflation at a time when Government announced it wouldn’t add to the cost of living, it will move Ireland to the second highest hospitality VAT rate within the

€10K

that it was so serious. The cause remains unknown. When leaving the hospital I was put on a monitor and medication. I was unable to play any sport for over eight weeks. Even after the eight weeks I suffered from severe tiredness. It affected every aspect of my life.”

His parents Killian and Lorraine are both members of the Breakaway Pedlars group and 15 of them are attempting to cycle the two popular tourist routes to raise money for Crumlin and to say thanks to for the care they received during Fionn’s treatments.

“Everybody should be doing something for Crumlin, not just when something comes to your door,” his mother Lorraine told the Killarney Advertiser.

The group of cyclists will take on the Beara Peninsula next Friday before heading to South Kerry the following day.

EU and it will erode Irelands competitiveness as a tourist destination.

The Chief Executive Restaurants Association of Ireland of the Restaurants Association of Ireland has said: “The increase is wrong at a time when the country needs to reduce inflation, a vat increase only adds to inflation. Government need to restore the 9% VAT for Food related Hospitality businesses in Budget 2024 and we will me making the case for this when we meet with the Minister for Finance next week. The increase the vat rate is the final nail in the coffin for many small cafes, restaurants and food led pubs.”

Marie Meets

Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.

Killarney pub celebrates 100 years in heart of community

First opened in 1923 by Matthew Cahill, four generations of his family have not only run the bar, but have been reared from birth on the top floor, sharing their home with the countless faces that have passed through the doors.

Celebrating 100 years of pulling pints on High Street, and serving tipples, toasties and toddies, the pub is now run by fourth generation Cara O'Connor and her 'great staff', as she refers to them, continuing to cement the O'Connor legacy to their locals and tourists alike.

Passed on by her father, Tadhg O'Connor, who sees the customers as "more than just punters, they are the friends and family who have seen my siblings and I grow from children here on High Street, passing on the pub trade from generation to generation for over ten decades now. As my mother used said 'its only bricks and morter' but it's also a great honour to bestow to the next generation," Tadhg explained.

O'Connor's is seeped in history Cara. You can see that from the moment you walk through the door.

"My great grandfather was Matthew Cahill from Gortbee, Beaufort, who stopped off in Scotland picking potatoes on his way to Boston where he ran the Speakeasy Bar before returning some years later, setting up his hackney business with a brand new Buick imported from America. He married my great grandmother Molly O'Sullivan, who was a cook in Victoria House. They had one daughter, my grand mother, Kitty Cahill, who worked the hackney business for her father at 16 years, before marrying my grandfather Teddy O'Connor, Ardmoneill, Killorglin, in

1950, taking over the bar together when my Dad Tadhg was born in 1958" Cara explained.

O'Connor's is over the door, so why do locals refer to the pub more so as Teddy's?

"Oh he was a real personality was my father Teddy," Tadhg explained. "He was a prominent Kerry footballer in his day, having won an All-Ireland medal in 1946 against Roscommon and played in the Polo Grounds in New York the following year. It was here that Teddy met his sister Molly, for the first time, as she had emigrated before he was born. As luck would have it, Molly’s son, named Kerry, was mascot on that day in New York too. My father soon changed the name of the pub to Teddy's and when my wife Mary and I took over the pub in 1990, it was an easy decision to make in changing the name of the pub to O'Connor's as Mary's maiden name is also O'Connor. To this day, locals will always refer to O'Connor's as Teddy's which I love."

What do you think has made O'Connor's such a successful pub for the past 100 years?

"We have a strong affiliation with the

GAA with Teddy playing for Kerry and my Dad Tadhg, who played with the Kerry Minors in 1976 and captained the team in 1977 and today we have music in the bar 7 nights a week and I have also noticed many talented visitors throw their hand to the piano upstairs which is always a treat. As a family, I'm not sure if we might have succeeded without the help of cousin Tess, the glue who held the generations together for the bones of 40 years, running the pub, minding children, which included my sister Lisa and I too. She was well known for her work in the fish shop which Teddy ran on the premises, providing an array of fish direct from the fishmongers to many hotels in Killarney. Tess handled all the deliveries in a van she christened 'the yellow submarine'. As a publican-cum-fishmonger-cum-Nanny, she never touched a drop and she never married. Where would she find the time?" Cara laughed.

So you're fourth generation Cara. Do you carry the same traits?

"The apple didn't fall far from the tree with my Dad and Grandfather" Cara explained. Both adored the outdoors and sports, all the while running a pub. Their

love for football and the lakes saw a variety of punters pass through the doors at O'Connor’s. Teddy used to run the larger boat at Ross Castle, The Pride of the Lakes and my father is first in the door here at 8:30am each morning to meet tourists and take them on the Gap Trip which he operates out of gapofdunloetours.com and visitinnisfallen.com. I usually arrive at 12 noon to open the pub daily".

"My partner Marcel and I, revamped and reopened O'Connor's on the first week of March 2020 and due to Covid we closed it on St Patrick's Day, just two weeks later. Studying retail design in Dublin, I spent many summers travelling around the U.S and New Zealand working in bars. Needless to say we were disappointed after all of our efforts to reopen O'Connor's as a brand new team but we adapted with the restrictions creating an outdoor atmosphere with awnings and heaters, even creating 'Teddy's Toasties' (which are still on the menu) to accommodate the governments €9 food rule at the time. It was ironic how the pandemic enhanced O'Connor’s and we built on that as restrictions eased to indoors. Whilst remaining traditional, we are cosmopolitan here on New Market Lane, and enjoy a great relationship with our Mexican, Italian, and Indian neighbours, together with the very popular Good Boy Coffee and Curious Cat Cafe. Dad can still be seen on busy nights as traffic warden on Old Market Lane. We work well as a team and we are always learning. I think it's important to adapt offering cocktails etc whilst maintaining the tradition that is O'Connor's Bar, High Street, Killarney. Marcel and I are looking forward to welcoming our customers in celebrating our 100th year in business in the coming weeks".

Before I left the premises, I heard a call "Miss, I'm looking for a blonde in a black dress", the familiar voice of Tim The Butcher, a regular for over 50 years, who is welcomed daily by the staff at O'Connors. The same welcome received by previous regulars John B Keane, Ted Jones, The Dubliners, Brendan O'Brien, the Dixies. Tim was in safe hands and soon accompanied by his blonde wearing a curvaceous black dress, lovingly handed to him in the form of a creamy pint of Guinness from the barman.

Farewell Jacek

This week KC Print bids farewell to Jacek Zakrzewski. Jacek officially retired 2 weeks ago after 16 years’ loyal service to the company. He made one last journey to KC Print and Killarney Advertiser to bid farewell to his work colleagues before he embarks on his journey home to Poland.

Shortly after arriving in Ireland Jacek joined KC Print and quickly made Killarney his second home. He joined the company as a finishing operator and quickly expanded into the pre-press department. His attention to detail and calm and systematic work ethic made for smooth-running of the pre-press department. His dedication to the company and to his job was a constant.

Being an outdoor enthusiast, Jacek and Killarney hit it off from the word go. He nailed the ‘work life balance’ whether it was biking or hiking, walking or running, Jacek was a familiar face in the National Park. Jacek could be seen participating in a park run one day and up Cardiac Hill the next. There was neither a walk nor

trail that was unknown to Jacek, most if not all explored.

Jacek’s appetite for the history of Killarney was so in-depth that he was able to engage knowledgeably in local historical conversations whilst occasionally correcting some misguided local in the process.

Jacek was responsible for laying out (imposing) and producing the printing plates for the print production including the Killarney Advertiser. While going about his own job, from time to time he would catch an incorrect spelling derived from local or Irish backgrounds. A local would be forgiven for some, but they never got past Jacek!

Jacek was very active in both the local

and Polish church communities, publishing a Polish church newsletter for a time.

Jacek is returning home to his family in Poland this weekend and we wish him safe travels. Jacek will be missed by his work colleagues and all he came in contact with within the community. Kil-

larney became his second home, so we expect many return visits during his long retirement ahead.

On behalf of the management of KC Print and Killarney Advertiser, we wish Jacek a full and active retirement. See you soon…

Just Eat goes green in Killarney

Global online food delivery marketplace Just Eat will reach more Irish consumers than ever before as it announces ambitious plans to expand its geographical footprint, with Killarney, among one of eight new locations nationwide.

Through the expansion, Killarney consumers will now be able to avail of Just Eat for food delivery and grocery orders in their area.

With a total annual expenditure on food delivery & takeaway orders in the Irish market at an estimated €2.2 billion, according to the Just Eat Food Delivery Report released in June, the company sees significant growth potential in Ireland now and into the future. Irish consumers currently spend an average of €46.69 on takeaways monthly and order a takeaway approximately 2.9 times per month

Amanda Roche-Kelly, Managing Director for Just Eat Ireland said: “We’re really excited to be able to offer our service to more consumers throughout

New hobby and board game shop for Killarney

A dedicated board game and collectible shop finally opens in Killarney.

The Guild Hall, opened in July by Killarney man Robert O’Neill, brings his passion and almost 20 years of expertise in the field to gamers and enthusiasts in the heart of our town.

Ireland and specifically in Killarney and the Munster region more broadly. New restaurant and grocery partners will also have access to a range of sustainable packaging options through Just Eat’s partnership with Notpla. Notpla has produced seaweed coated takeaway boxes as an alternative to the industry norm of plastic of bio-plastic lining. These takeaway boxes are both recyclable and will also naturally biodegrade within 4-6 weeks – just like a piece of fruit.

A strategic business priority for Just Eat is to encourage restaurant partners to embrace sustainability initiatives that are designed to lower the environmental impact and carbon footprint of the food delivery and takeaway industry.

After years of managing another wellknown gaming and electronics store in Killarney, Robert decided to go it alone and create his own space to bring his passions to Killarney in a safe and friendly environment for beginners and veterans alike.

It brings something fresh to the town’s entertainment scene, with a huge space on New Market Lane for people to come

in, rent a table and either play your own board games or pick one off the shelf. There is a focus on encouraging new faces to engage in hobbies that you might have never expected to be interested in, and while Warhammer might seem incredibly daunting, there are often exhibition games to show off the games ruleset and questions are welcomed. Not only that, but the store has started hosting officially sponsored events by the companies that own the properties, such as a very recent Warhammer model painting event which was completely sponsored by Games Workshop, which had the store packed out as people from all over Killarney, painting models supplied by The Guild Hall for free.

Dochas invites submissions for ten minute plays

Send your entry on a Word document to dochasdramakillarney@gmail.com. The selected plays will be performed before Christmas.

“We are having our first meeting for this session on September 11 at 8pm, in the Anam Centre East Avenue Road,” said

“So, if you feel you would like to act help with costumes or sets and other back stage work, why not join us? You won’t be sorry.”

Drainage Scheme at the Abbey

Drainage Scheme is a family drama about apathy, uncertainty, and perseverance. Written and directed by Kerry born Dick Walsh, performed by a cast of 9, and with live music and song, the play is a darkly humorous and poignant rendering of the impact of global trade on the day-to-day life of the Mahony family living in Kerry in the 18th century.

Drainage Scheme is co-presented by the Abbey Theatre and Dublin Fringe Festival and will play on The Abbey’s Peacock stage from 11th to 15th September.

Set in rural Kerry in the 18th Century, Drainage Scheme is the story of those living on the edge of society and struggling to survive. As much about the here and now as it is about then, the narrative is set in time of radical change in rural society brought about by developments in banking and global trade. Following the journey of the Mahony’s who take on a contract to carry out drainage work - vital for converting land to pasture to meet the opportunity of the rapidly expanding butter trade that saw South Munster become the pasture mono culture we now know - Drainage Scheme explores how the power dynamics within the family shift when they have to negotiate a precarious financial situation arising from the shift in global trade.

Bringing vividly to life the experience of economic uncertainty and the erosion of shared values.

In the hands of writer and director Dick Walsh, whose father runs an agricultural drainage business in North Kerry, and who did 5 years research to develop the play and understand its historical origins, Drainage Scheme takes the global and makes it personal and relevant. The play sheds vital light on issues making it easy to feel we have no control over but placing risk to the very fabric of our day-to-day lives. Walsh originally trained as an architect began making theatre in 2009 after discovering the works of Richard Maxwell, Jerome Bel, John Jesurun and Forced Entertainment. Noke Theatre was established in 2021 as the vehicle for Dick Walsh to produce his own work.

Hope you filled your tank in time

More bad news for our pockets this week as petrol and diesel prices are set to jump from today (Friday). There will be a rise in prices from today, when increases in fuel excise duty come into effect adding 7c to a litre of petrol and 5c to diesel.

The average price of fuel in Ireland currently sits around €1.70 for petrol while diesel is €1.66 but filling up your tank will cost a few euro more when the prices go up.

After Friday's price hike an average family car with a 55-litre fuel tank, could cost up to €3.85 more expensive to fill up and €2.75 more for diesel.

It comes as motorists are braced for further increases in fuel excise duty due to be implemented by the end of October. The phased return to full rate of excise duty on October 31 will further push up the price of a litre of petrol by 8c and diesel by 6c.

Football book launch scores big for charity

Big-hearted Kerry man Billy Ryle has pledged to donate profits from his inspiring new book to the National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI). NCBI offers services to people who are blind or vision impaired in Kerry and around Ireland.

In 2018, Billy Ryle, who was enjoying a full and active life, was diagnosed with Fuchs Dystrophy, for which he underwent two cataract surgeries and two corneal transplant operations of donor organs at Bon Secours Hospital, Cork. Despite his diagnosis and subsequent

treatments, Billy remained committed to his local community. Among the many challenges Billy faced, in his new book entitled: Donor Organ Transplants or Blind for the Football, Billy provides a detailed insight into the inside story on the responsibility and expectation, which weighed heavy on his shoulders, to lead his club to Kerry senior football championship success as his vision was rapidly deteriorating. The book features a timeline of black & white photographs including the official photograph of the 2021 Austin Stacks County Senior Football Championship

winning team, courtesy of Martin Cleary. The Book will be officially launched by Senator Martin Conway at Kerry Library, Moyderwell, Tralee on Thursday, 7th September 2023 at 7pm. Senator was the first visually impaired person to be elected to the Oireachtas, and is a formidable advocate for equality in education and employment for disabled people. There should be a Book available for everybody who attends the launch. In turn, Billy is requesting that each person might make a donation of €20 or more. All royalties in 2023 will go to NCBI.

Hackers shut down two of the world's most advanced telescopes

UK Air traffic control meltdown could cost airlines €100 million

The Director of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Willie Walsh, said that the Air Traffic Control (ATC) meltdown on Monday could lead to up to €100 million in costs for the airline industry.

With over 1,500 flights cancelled across the UK on Monday leaving hundreds of thousands of passengers stranded with airlines scrambling to find ways to get the stranded passengers to their destinations.

The disruptions also left aircrafts and crews stranded around the world, so many could not operate the scheduled flights on Tuesday. This has created a knock-on effect of flight delays and cancelations.

Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary described

Monday as “a very difficult day” with 250 flights cancelled, while a further 70 were axed on Tuesday.

He said: “We have been in contact with UK Nats.

“We still haven’t had an explanation from them (about) what exactly caused this failure yesterday (Monday) and where were their back-up systems.

It’s not acceptable that UK Nats simply allow their computer systems to be taken down and everybody’s flights get cancelled.”

Just under 100 flights into and out of Dublin Airport we cancelled, while more than 10 flights in both Cork and Shannon were also cancelled.

An estimated 15,000 passengers were affected by delays and cancellations in Ireland.

Hurricane Idalia lashes Florida

Hurricane Idalia ploughed into Florida's Gulf Coast on Wednesday with winds of 201kph and torrential rains, then turned on southeastern Georgia, where floodwaters trapping some residents in their homes.

Hours after Idalia hit landfall as a powerful Category 3 hurricane at Keaton Beach in Florida's Big Bend region, authorities were still trying to assess the full extent of damage in the hardest-hit areas.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said no hurricane fatalities had been confirmed and that it seemed most residents in vulnerable, low-lying areas had heeded evacuation orders and warnings to move to higher ground.

Insured property losses in Florida were projected to run €8.6 billion, investment bank UBS said in a research note based on preliminary estimates.

Still, Idalia appeared from early reports to have been far less destructive than Hurricane Ian, a Category 5 storm that struck Florida last September, killing 150 people and causing $112 billion in damage.

A mysterious “cyber incident” at a National Science Foundation (NSF) centre coordinating international astronomy efforts has knocked out of commission major telescopes in Hawaii and Chile. With no resolution in sight, research teams are trying to figure out alternatives as critical observation windows are lost. Graduate students are being sent to Chile to relieve exhausted onsite staff who have spent the past 2 weeks manually operating instruments

there.

Normally remotely operate, but on 9 August the centre announced it had disconnected its computer network from the Observatories network. This action also took out a further eight affiliated telescopes.

Ground-based astronomical research depends on observations precisely planned for when extraterrestrial objects align with the field of view for specific telescopes - but hackers now have to figure in their planning.

9% VAT rate expired

The reduced 9% VAT rate for tourism, hospitality and some other services has expired this week with a return to 13.5%. The government had already extended the lower rate back in February of this year.

The lowered rate of 9% was introduced in November 2020 to help stimulate the tourism and hospitality sectors during the pandemic and was extended in May of last year and again in February this year.

Despite strong opposition and last minute pleas by business organisations the increase went ahead as planned. Based on an economic assessment by Government officials found there was no economic case for any further extension. Government ministers have since consistently ruled out any further extension to the lower rate.

The extension is estimated to have cost the Exchequer €300m in lost tax revenue.

The Commission on Taxation and Wel-

fare recommended in its report last year that the rate be restored to the 13.5% level and that it should be increased progressively over time.

Ibec called for it to be maintained, warning the rise, coupled with a variety of other upcoming cost increases, would heap additional financial pressure on businesses, claiming it has played a vital role in sustaining enterprises and preserving a significant number of the more than 300,000 jobs in the experience economy, which is worth €4bn annually.

App'solutely Fabulous!

The name 'Pat Sheehan' and weight-loss go hand in hand in Killarney.

I spoke to Pat on his 10th Anniversary to discuss his success and the popularity of his common sense, practical, no nonsense weight-loss programmes.

I learnt Pat has helped countless people over the last 10 years improve their lives by guiding and motivating them through better habits in terms of nutrition and lifestyle choices. Pat promotes balance in every way. Most people let their lifestyle dictate their digestive system and metabolism whereas Pat says you should be prioritising your metabolic health by adapting your lifestyle appropriately.

'This might not make sense right now but after a meeting with me you will see how important it is to have your metabolic rate running efficiently.' Pat said.

'EAT OFTEN AND LITTLE!'

Getting off the Isle of Man during an air traffic control crisis

There is, possibly, a Hollywood road trip script somewhere in this story.

Sitting in Ronaldsway International Airport on the Isle of Man last Monday afternoon, five people sat and chatted about all the happenings at the Manx Grand Prix that was about to draw to another spectacular close.

Monday was a Bank Holiday on the island and while racing was still underway, the Emerald Airlines timetable dictated that these five people had to leave trackside and get airside for the only (over booked) flight back to Belfast City Airport that afternoon.

This disparate group, unknown to one another, but united by a love of motorcycle road racing were about to become very good friends, very fast.

The group included, myself, my friend Mark, Philip, an 11-time TT race winner who was vaguely known by Mark, Alan, who I did not know but had seen him around motorcycle races in Mondello in the past and Stephanie, an events manager who was on the said to watch the races and shared a taxi with Alan to get to the airport from the track.

All five were tuned to live updates from the TT Grandstand, racing was delayed for a few hours, due to a wet track and there was a possibility that we would get the results of a least one race before boarding commenced.

Then news started filtering through that there was a major air traffic control system failure across the whole of the UK. Flights in an out of the Isle of Man were severely disrupted, some were cancelled. Our flight was delayed by one hour, then two and as the afternoon pressed on it was becoming very obvious that we would be very lucky to get in the air at all.

CANCELLED

The call came at around 4pm: no more flights on and off the island.

Now, the Isle of Man is one of the most notoriously difficult places to get off at the best of times. We already knew, from speaking to some of the Irish riders that the next available ferry to Belfast did not set sail until Thursday afternoon.

The helpful people at the Emerald Airlines desk in departures said that there was a ferry to Liverpool on Monday night with the option of picking up a Ryanair or EasyJet flight to Belfast from there on Tuesday morning.

However, it was plain to see that air transport was in chaos and the chances of getting out of Liverpool were slim to zero on

Tuesday morning.

And of course if we took that option, then we were no longer under any obligation to be bailed out by Emerald Airlines. However, the news was not much better from them. Due to the large number of Irish fans on the island for the Grand Prix, all flights to Belfast were sold until Friday morning. Dublin was just about the best option, a flight on Thursday, followed by a bus to Belfast was offered but equally a non-runner.

The airline did offer us a hotel stay in Douglas until such time as we made our own arrangements.

We accepted this, Mark has a borrowed car still sitting in the airport car park, and all five of us piled into it.

At this point it became very obvious that all of us were very well connected in the motorsport world and our contacts’ book was about to get us off the island. But not before we realised that we had time to make it back to the TT course and watch the Centenary edition of the Manx Grand Prix.

Phillip was able to blag all five of us, firstly, on to the start line, then up on to the famous grandstand itself and then to winners’ enclosure – the first example of our motorsport contacts helping make the best of a bad situation.

In the meantime Alan contacted friends of friends in an effort to get some sort of

vessel to sail us from the Isle of Man to somewhere in Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

There was all sorts of talks of yachts, RIBs and fishing boats available for the task.

Just around the same time that Michael Dunlop crossed the finish line to take another famous Isle of Man victory Alan got word that there was small fishing boat departing Peel Harbour at 8am on Tuesday morning.

This boat was heading for Strangford in County Down, just across the lock from Portaferry. I have a rally friend in Portaferry and one phone call later, he confirmed he would meet us off the boat and take us to Belfast City Airport.

Turns out the boat’s owner was involved in motorsport too, Terry raced an exKeke Rosberg Formula 2 car in Mondello Park and Kirkistown back in the day. That evening all five of dined together at the Regency Hotel at the upper end of Douglas’ promenade.

As the wine and beer flowed, it reminded me of a the cult movie. ‘The Breakfast Club’ as complete strangers opened up on some of their deepest personal stories.

Afterwards some of us, not all, crashed the post-Grand Prix party at Club 1886.

PEEL HARBOUR

Mark, meanwhile, managed to get an extension on the borrowed car, that as now

was due to be abandoned in Peel and not the airport on Tuesday morning. We arrived at Peel Harbour just after 8am, for our appointed departure at 830am.

It was a rough crossing, high waves and strong currents never a good idea on a small boat, but skipper Terry steamed on and we were soon in the middle of the Irish Sea.

Ironically, those that had sense and avoided the previous night’s party were the one to suffer the least from the dreaded sea sickness.

We docked in Portaferry around midday, where my rally friend Cathal invited us to his pub for a quick lunch and a drink – if you ever find yourself in this part of the world make sure and visit Dumigan’s Bar - a quaint tiny bar with small lounge at back like someone’s sitting room and small beer garden out the very back. Cathal also runs a chippy in the town – get to the pub first and he will tell you all about his famous fish and chips.

Just under 24 hours later than advertised Cathal had us all dropped at Belfast, the found bunch of friends saying their goodbyes.

And spare a thought for our fellow passengers, they were, most likely, still on the island days after our voyage across the Irish Sea.

Sometimes you have to be willing to do the things other people won’t do!

How long do electric car batteries last on average?

According to the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), most manufactures guarantee eight years or 160,000 km of electric car battery life – 160,000km is the guaranteed life not the limit.

Research carried out by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) finds that the average kilometres travelled in 2021 by a car in Ireland is 13,436km, so this means that an average electric car owner in Ireland could expect about 11.9 years to get to the guaranteed lifespan of 160,000km for an electric car.

In addition, the SEAI finds that some US customer reports estimate that the average battery pack's lifespan to be around 320,000km and other EV owners have reported to have passed the 1,000,000km mark on the same battery.

The lifespan can change depending on the manufacturer. Tesla for example,

guarantee 240,000km or eight years, whatever is reached first. Clearly, factors such as the manufacturer, temperature and charging habits, can influence the EV battery life.

Almost all the makers of the top registered electric cars in 2023 guarantee at least eight years or 160,000km of battery life with a minimum state of health (SoH) of 70%, which means that if the health of your electric car battery goes below 70% in less than eight years or 160,000 km, the battery replacement is covered by a warranty. You should visit the official maker websites for more accurate information.

You may think that eight years isn't a long

time, but compare that to diesel or petrol vehicles, where you will more than likely see car parts degrade after a few years. The fact that most manufacturers guarantee a state of health of minimum 70% means that it’s unlikely that your battery will lose more than 30% of is SoH in less than eight years. This also means that the electric car batteries are built to live a lot longer than eight years.

Remember that your battery has a warranty period, so if anything happens to it during that period you should be covered.

Once you have reached the end of the warranty period, the cost of replacing your battery varies from maker to maker and can depend on things like capacity. It’s also a good idea to be prepared for additional costs for labour if the battery does need to be replaced.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT & 1ST ANNIVERSARY BUCKLEY

In loving memory of Jeremiah (Skip) Buckley

12 St Brendan’s Place, Killarney who passed away on 31st August 2022. On this his first anniversary, Jeremiah’s wife Patricia and family, wish to acknowledge and thank everyone for the many expressions of sympathy, and the kindness shown to all the family during our time of grief.

To our extended family, to our wonderful friends and neighbours who supported us and called to the house, who attended his removal, funeral mass and burial, we thank you all for your support.

A very special thanks to his very close friend and neighbour Donal O Mahony for everything he did for Jeremiah.

Jeremiah always wanted to be at home when the time came for him to leave this world and we are greatly indebted and forever grateful to the members of Killarney Order of Malta who brought him home from UHK to see out his final days surrounded by his loved ones in the comfort of his own home.

We would like to thank Dr Moynihan and the hospital staff in Dinis ward that took care of Jeremiah during his hospital stay, to the wonderful staff of Kerry Palliative Care, the night nurse, as well as Dr Ken Keohane and the staff of Deenagh Medical Centre.

Our thanks for Fr Jim Lenihan for his friendship with Jeremiah, as well as his guidance and help in preparing for Jeremiah’s funeral mass. Thanks to Paula Gleeson and Jack McCrohan for the singing and music at the mass.

A special word of thanks to the members of Deerpark Pitch & Putt, and his former work colleagues of Killarney Urban Council, who gave Jeremiah a Guard of Honour on his final journey through his hometown, something he would have been very proud of.

To everyone that called to the house with food and refreshments in the days following Jeremiah’s passing, we want to say a heartfelt thank you, and would especially like to thank Sean Murphy of Murphys Bar, Kathleen Cronin and Derick McMahon for everything during those days.

Thanks to Mike and Mary O Shea of O’Shea’s Funeral Directors for their professionalism, help and advice.

Keane quits Kerry FC

Club captain departs League of Ireland side mid-season

It started out as a fairytale but there was to be no ‘happily ever after’ for Matt Keane at Kerry FC. With eight games remaining in the club’s debut season in the League of Ireland, the captain has left the squad with immediate effect.

News of the all-action midfielder’s exit broke in the aftermath of last Friday’s 3-1 away defeat to his former club Treaty United. Keane did not feature in the match and manager Billy Dennehy has since told the media that lack of guaranteed game time is what ultimately led to the 27-year-old’s departure.

Keane has not issued a public statement regarding his exit and he respectfully declined to comment when contacted. While it has been reported elsewhere that the break-up was amicable, the Killarney Advertiser understands that ‘acrimonious’ would be a better descriptor. It is safe to assume that things must have soured for the club’s first marquee signing and first ever captain to walk away before the season has reached its conclusion.

It was never supposed to end like this. Keane’s signing in December of 2022 was hailed as a real feel-good story. After spending two seasons with Treaty, the Kilcummin man returned to the Kingdom to join the newly formed Kerry FC as they prepared for their first ever campaign in the First Division.

As one of the few Kerry natives out there with LOI minutes under his belt, Keane was expected to play a key role for a

team that was clearly lacking in high level experience. He started just 13 out of 30 league and cup matches, however, coming off the bench in a further 10. His last start came against Waterford on August 4, and he played just 14 minutes over the last three games.

Not much was expected of Kerry FC in their maiden season – 2023 was always going to be about getting the ball rolling – but it has, nevertheless, been a tough campaign to date. After 28 games they find themselves rooted to the bottom of the table on seven points, 22 points behind second-from-bottom Finn Harps. With vice-captain Wayne Guthrie also gone from the set-up, Leo Gaxha will now take over as the team’s captain for the rest of the year.

Keane is expected to return to Killarney Celtic, with whom he played before signing for Treaty. He has also rejoined the Kilcummin GAA senior team and was an unused sub in last weekend’s victory over Legion in the Intermediate Club Championship.

Meanwhile, Keane’s former teammate Ryan Kelliher has signed a contract that will keep him at Kerry FC until the end of 2025. The deal is a landmark one for the club as it marks their first ever professional contract.

The 22-year-old striker has been one of the team’s standout performers since signing from Killarney Celtic, scoring nine goals in 28 appearances.

EXIT: Matt Keane has decided to leave Kerry FC with eight games remaining in the 2023 season.

County Championship fixtures confirmed

The groups and opening round fixtures in the 2023 Kerry Senior Football Championship have been set and defending champions East Kerry will start their title defence against South Kerry in Austin Stack Park. The match will take place on Saturday, September 17 at 7.30pm.

The holders have been drawn in Group 1 alongside Templenoe, West Kerry and the men from the south. Templenoe’s Round 1 fixture against West Kerry will be staged at Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium the same Saturday at 3pm.

East Kerry v South Kerry will form part of a double-header with the Group 3 game between Kerins O’Rahillys and Shannon Rangers (5.30pm). The other Group 3 game sees Mid Kerry take on Spa at Stack Park on the Sunday at 3.30pm.

In Group 4, Club Championship semi-finalists Dingle and Crokes will meet in Tralee on the Sunday at 5.30pm – after the Mid Kerry v Spa match – and two teams from the Tralee area, Na Gaeil and St Brendan’s, go head-to-head on Friday evening at the same venue. That game

will start at 8pm.

Finally, Group 2 features an even spread of club and district teams as newly promoted Rathmore are joined by Kenmare Shamrocks, Feale Rangers and St Kieran’s. The opening round games in this pool will form a double-header in Killarney on Sunday, September 17 with Rathmore playing St Kieran’s (1.30pm) and Feale Rangers playing Kenmare (3.30pm).

As was the case in last year’s Kerry SFC, the teams in each group will play one another once with the top two advancing to the quarter-finals.

After finishing bottom of their respective groups in the Club Championship, Kerins O’Rahillys and Na Gaeil will face off in a relegation playoff once both clubs are out of the County Championship. If one of them reaches the county final, they will be exempt from relegation and the other will be relegated to intermediate. If both of them reach the county final, the third placed teams in the Club Championship groups (Templenoe and Rathmore) will contest the relegation playoff.

Kerry organisations to benefit from Ross event

Two very worthy local causes are set to benefit from the upcoming Ross Golf Club Charity Days, which will take place next month on September 22 and 23.

This year the funds raised by the annual event will go to Comfort for Chemo and St Francis Special School in Beaufort. A team of four can enter the charity competition for €160 with tee box sponsorship also available for €50. Mary Fitzgerald of Comfort for Chemo Kerry said they are delighted to have been chosen as one

this year's beneficiaries. “Comfort for Chemo Kerry are helping to build, equip and provide the comfort elements for patients who are undergoing chemotherapy in a new state of the art chemotherapy unit within the grounds of UHK.

“The demand for chemotherapy services in Kerry is increasing year on year in line with international statistics which indicate that one in every two people will receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime.

In 2022, over 5,000 people in Kerry received chemotherapy which aligns with

the need for this essential unit in Kerry so as to ensure people can receive this treatment on their own doorstep and help to make this different journey a little easier.”

Speaking at the launch, Principal Keith Ó Brolacháin explained how the funds would benefit St Francis Special School.

“Our school provides the highest quality care and education for pupils with moderate and/or severe-to-profound specials needs. Over the next 12 months we want to focus on upgrading our yard and senior playground, providing a safe drop off

area for school transport and also providing access from classrooms directly on to the yard.

“These will all come at a substantial cost, but we won’t let that stop us trying the best we can for our pupils. Once again, we would like to thank John Ivory and all the members of the Ross Golf Club for their generosity, and we look forward to a wonderful event.”

Those interested in participating can email prorossgc@gmail.com or call John on 086 3499373.

CHARITY: At the launch of Captain John Ivory's Charity Days at the Ross Golf Club were MJ Casey (President Ross GC), Terence Mulcahy (Killarney Race Co.), Keith Ó Brolacháin (Principal St Francis Special School), Fiona Carroll (SFSS), Breeda Daly (SFSS), Johnny Brosnan (Vice Captain Ross GC), Donie Brosnan (Ross GC), Bríd O'Connor (Comfort For Chemo), Paul McCarthy (Comfort For Chemo), Mary Fitzgerald (Comfort For Chemo), and John Ivory (Captain Ross Golf Club).

Spa and Crokes book senior semi-final dates

Eamonn Fitzgerald reports on the Kerry Club Championships

The group phase of the very competitive Kerry Club Championships were completed last weekend and the draw has now been made for the knockout stages.

For some, the road to Croker and the prospect of an All-Ireland title is the focal point. However, winning out in Kerry usually proves to be the hardest hurdle of all.

In 2022, Rathmore and Fossa had their moments of ultimate glory when they banished the January blues by winning the All-Ireland Intermediate and Junior titles. They were both promoted to the next grade up for 2023 and they have shown in the last three weeks that they are well able to compete. Others will be fighting for their lives to avoid relegation. The top team in each group has the added bonus of a home tie in the next round, which takes place this weekend.

SENIOR SEMI-FINALS

Spa v Dingle (Saturday 6pm, Tullig). Spa have been catching the eye of late, scoring very highly in all three rounds of the group stage. They won last weekend by just about edging out Kenmare Shamrocks by a single point (1-14 to 1-13).

Kerry players Dara Moynihan (scorer of Spa’s goal) and ace free taker Seánie O’Shea played central roles in this game; O’Shea scored ten points but his side still lost.

Dingle have been the most consistent top senior club team in recent years and after losing to Crokes in Round 1, they bounced back by hammering Kerins O’Rahillys 2-18 to 0-14 in Round 2. (That result means that Strand Road lost all three of their games and they now face a relegation battle against Tralee rivals Na Gaeil.)

Barry Dan is a key man for Dingle, so Spa will need to be at their best i lár na páirce. Elsewhere the Geaneys pose the greatest dangers and it isn’t just Kerry star Paul. Mikey, in particular, is a trump card.

Tom O’Sullivan will line out at corner back as per programme but is well capable of moving up the wing to score two or three points as he does so regularly with Kerry.

Dara Moynihan is now showing his county form with Spa and Dingle will

be keen to curtail his influence. Evan Cronin is top scorer for Spa. This will be their greatest test and a welcome win would catapult them onto the big stage. This game is too close to call, and it may not be resolved at the end of normal time.

Dr Crokes v Kenmare Shamrocks (Saturday 3pm, Lewis Road). Dr Crokes remain unbeaten after a 1-15 to 1-11 win away to Rathmore on Sunday. It is never easy to win in Rathbeg where the home side were expected to call the tune. However, Crokes held off the challenge and copper fastened victory late in the game when Micheál Burns converted a penalty after being fouled himself.

Like so many other clubs, Crokes have been badly hit by long term injuries to key experienced players and great and all as last week’s win was, it may well be a Pyrrhic victory with the loss of Gavin White. Unfortunately, a damaged a hamstring will keep him out of action for the knockout stages of this competition, and it remains to be seen if he will be recovered in time for the County Championship.

This is a further blow to Crokes after top scorer Tony Brosnan was also ruled out of action. Former Kerry star Fionn Fitzgerald suffered a very severe knee injury against Kenmare in last year’s championship and he has yet to play a full game this year. He did come on as a

late substitute in recent games. Crokes - as table toppers - will have home venue versus Kenmare, who knocked them out in the closing stages of this competition last year.

Kenmare will be depending on Kerry stars Seánie O’Shea and Stephen O’Brien to win this one, but home venue may be decisive on this occasion, especially when Crokes will now be missing two of their Kerry players.

Last week they also had to go without the injured Neil O’Shea, but Mark Fitzgerald did very well on Kerry All-Star Shane Ryan. Goalkeeper Shane Murphy and forward Micheál Burns will be central to Crokes’ ambitions. Home advantage would normally swing this one in Crokes’ favour but the loss of Brosnan compounded by the injury to White could be significant factors on the outcome.

INTERMEDIATE

Kilcummin teed up a home quarter-final against Milltown/Castlemaine (Sunday 4pm, Kilcummin) by defeating Legion at home on Sunday last (0-13 to 0-9).

Key to this win for Kilcummin was the manner in which the defence performed. It was a big win for the former All-Ireland Intermediate champions, who were missing their key player Paul O’Shea. He suffered an ankle injury in Round 2.

Young Cian Foley and Mark O’Shea impressed up front, each kicking two fine points in the first half to give them a half-time lead of 0-9 to 0-6.

Will Shine was a prolific scorer for Legion when they won their first two games in Group C but the Kilcummin defence kept a tight rein on him. Dara O’Callaghan and Seán O’Leary, who has battled back courageously after his horrific car accident, caught the eye.

Former Kerry star James O’Donoghue kept Legion in contention with three points from frees. For Kilcummin former Kerry goalkeeper Brendan Kealy was as assured as ever at number 1 and he scored a fine point from a 45. Legion will be away to Beaufort in their quarter-final (Sunday 1.30pm) and that will not be an easy assignment against a team that missed out last year. The Mid Kerry team topped their group with Milltown/Castlemaine finishing second.

Gneeveguilla were the unlucky team to miss out on qualification from this pool, despite their game against Glenbeigh-Glencar very easily (3-10 to 0-9). They needed Beaufort to beat Milltown/Castlemaine in the other game if they wanted to advance but Fergal Hallissey kicked a late equalising point for Beaufort.

A very interesting game last week was Desmonds v Stacks, both former All-Ireland Club winners at senior level. Desmonds have struggled ever since but they came good last weekend with a convincing 2-11 to 1-8 victory.

Stacks won the County Championship in 2021 but were subsequently relegated last season. They bounced back to win their first two games and were odds on to get back to senior status until they were well beaten by Desmonds.

What is most remarkable is that Desmonds won this game even though they played with just 14 men from the 25th minute when Michael Walsh was shown a straight red.

The key score here was a goal by Rory Burke at the very end of the first half to give them their deserved 1-8 to 1-3 lead. They maintained their superiority throughout the second half, stunning Stacks who seemed to be on target to return to senior status.

Stacks won’t relish the next round

away to Glenflesk (Saturday 3pm) with a young enough team who are going well. They racked up a huge score at home last weekend, 4-12 in all with goals by Luke Crowley, Darragh Roche, Patrick Darcy and Brian O’Donoghue.

Paudie Clifford (0-5) kept Fossa ticking over until O’Donoghue scored the late, crucial goal for Glenflesk. Emmet O’Shea had equalised for Fossa late in the contest, but Glenflesk upped their game once more to secure top spot.

Fossa now face an away quarter-final against Desmonds (Sunday 4pm). This will be a step up away from home. Rising tides lifts all boats and Fossa have proved that in 2022 when the prowess of the Clifford brothers boosted the rest of the team. The whole team is playing much better now with the coincidence of winning the All-Ireland title in January. Look out for Emmet O’Shea. He showed his class at minor level and is now a key man at senior level. Away to Desmonds will test Fossa, but the Cliffords’ influence may still be the deciding factor in this one. Fossa to win.

The IFC relegation semi-finals will see Currow up against Glenbeigh/ Glencar while Ballydonoghue face St Mary’s. Toss a coin.

JUNIOR PREMIER

In my view Listry were the best team in the junior ranks last year and they should have beaten Fossa in the best club of 2022. Only the magic of the great David Clifford denied them the Kerry title, which was a big disappointment for Listry and then manager Marc Ó Sé. Victory is within their sights and ambitions for this year. They will be at home to Listowel Emmets in the quarters (Saturday 6pm) and even though the latter had a surprising win over Firies last weekend, Listry will prove too strong. Firies had been going great guns but were surprisingly beaten by a single point 0-15 to 1-11, and that game was at Farranfore.

I also expect Ballymacelligott to win at home to Ballyduff (Saturday 4pm). I have been impressed by the quality of Ballymac’s style of play and expect them to have too much football nous against Ballyduff.

In the other quarter-final matchups, Ardfert host Churchill (Sunday 1.30pm) and Annascaul travel to Dromid (Sunday 3pm).

STREEET LEAGUES

The Street Leagues continue at Dr Crokes tonight (Friday) with games beginning at 6.30pm. The tournament concludes with a grand finale on Friday, September 8. A big club night is planned at the clubhouse after the games conclude.

Rowing clubs claim silverware in Dingle

The Irish Coastal Rowing Championships 2023 was a huge success in Dingle last weekend as thousands flocked over the three days to enjoy a feast of coastal rowing. Participants came from Donegal, Antrim, Down, Dublin, Wicklow, Wexford, Cork, and, of course, Kerry to fight

it out for the silverware.

There was huge competition in all finals and the Kerry contingent did their clubs proud. Flesk Valley had another super weekend; their highlights were no doubt their U12 and U21 ladies winning gold.

Cromane Rowing Club captured a fan-

tastic haul of medals and they also took home the Sporting Club of the Championship award. Fossa Rowing Club brought silverware home in some seriously tough finals. Workmen Coastal Rowing Club also claimed several medals – their junior men deserve a special mention.

A huge effort went in by a group of volunteers to put together the whole regatta behind the scenes and the event was a huge success. It was also brilliant to see Dingle take part in the heritage section and they managed to clinch a few gold medals, to the delight of their supporters.

Killarney Celtic

RESULT: Keane’s Jewellers Munster Champions Trophy - Killarney Celtic 6 Doolan’s Cow FC 2 (Stephen McCarthy 3, Witness Odirile 2, Trpimir Vrljicak). Killarney Celtic put in a much-improved 2nd half performance to overcome Doolan’s Cow FC of Cork to qualify for a home tie with Pike Rovers. Celtic started with the aid of a strong breeze, but it was Doolan’s who hit the front after 11mins when Aaron Hennessy beat the offside trap to slot past Roy Kelliher. Celtic were level on 27 mins when Witness Odirile finished from close range. However Doolan’s Cow were back in front on 35 mins after Jamie Murphy scored. Celtic came out in the 2nd half against the breeze and started to put on the pressure forcing Doolan’s Cow on the defensive. Celtic had hit the front after a double from Stephen McCarthy in the 52nd and 60th mins Witness Odirile gave Celtic breathing space with a 75th min goal before Stephen McCarthy completed his hattrick with a 78th min penalty. Finally Trpimir Vrljicak rounded off a good 2nd half performance with a fine effort in the 87th min to leave Celtic clear winners.

Killarney Legion GAA

INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: No joy in the latest round of the Intermediate Club Championship as a tame second half performance was capitalised on by a hungrier home side in Kilcummin. The game may have lacked a cutting edge as both sides were assured of their quarter final placings but Kilcummin exhibited a great zest for the contest when the fat was in the fire. All which means we now head to Beaufort for our quarter final joust while Kilcummin will entertain Milltown Castlemaine. The opening half was of good quality, the first twenty minutes especially so, with Finbarr Murphy and William Shine starting brightly. James O’Donoghue

and Eoghan O’Sullivan also got in on the scoring and the sides were level on five occasions. A strong finish to the half from Kilcummin saw them retire to the magnificent new dressing rooms with a three-point lead, 0-9 to 0-6. With a strong wind to our backs the portents looked promising, and an early James O’Donoghue point closed the gap to two but that was as good as it got as the performance fizzled out in the evening gloom. An improved showing will definitely be needed in the Mid Kerry venue in order to advance to the last four.

U12 GIRLS: Our U12 girls concluded their County League campaign during the week when they travelled to Beaufort. In a very open and sporting game, the home side made our midfield and attack work hard while our backs were kept on their toes the whole game. A massive effort was put in by the girls and the game opened up a bit more in the second half, but the early scores proved to be crucial in deciding the outcome and Beaufort took the victory on the night. Well done to the Beaufort team and their coaches. Well done to our girls on a fine campaign. The girls head right into their East Kerry competition next week and we wish them great success.

U14 GIRLS: The U14 girls took to the field on Sunday evening in the opening round of the East Kerry Division 1 league. The visitors to Direen were Fossa, the third time these teams have faced each other this season. The visitors played with the aid of the stiff breeze in the opening period and raced into a big lead with some early goals. We were slow to settle but did manage to stem the tide and work our way into the game to tag on some scores and keep the game alive albeit leaving a big deficit to make up at the break. The home side came out of the dressing room with renewed purpose and worked their way back into the game. A purple patch and a flurry of green flags and before long the game was back on level terms. The visitors bounced back, and it was nip and tuck with 10 mins to go. Fossa came strong in the closing stages to register some vital scores to claim the points on the night. Well done to all the girls who succeeded in providing yet another entertaining and sporting contest for the supporters in attendance. Thanks to Jason O’Brien who had a fine game on the whistle. Final score Killarney Legion 7-06 Fossa 8-11.

Spa GAA

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: In the third and last round of the Kerry Petroleum Club Championship group stages we narrowly defeated Kenmare when we welcomed them to Spa last Saturday evening. In a nail-biting display our side never let go of the lead. Although coming close Kenmare were not able to overcome the efforts of Spa. The game finished Spa 1-14 Kenmare 1-13 ensuring

us home advantage when we play Dingle in the Semi-Final of this competition this coming weekend. Date and time TBC.

Dr Crokes GAA

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 1:15 Rathmore 1:11. On Sunday we travelled to Rathmore where we came away with a 4-point win and more importantly home advantage as we face into the semi-final stages of the Club Championship. A strong cross field wind seemed to cause both teams plenty of difficulty in the first half with both teams clocking up wides early on. It took Micheal Burns until the 9th minute to kick the first point of the day. He followed this up with two frees, giving us a 3 point to no score lead after the first quarter. 16 minutes in Rathmore kicked their first score, a free from corner forward Chrissy Spiers. Micheal Burns was unlucky not to have added the maximum when the Rathmore number 1 reacted quickly to knock the ball over the bar. Half time score 0:09 to 0:06. The home side started of the second half the livelier, scoring 3 points without reply. 10 minutes in, Shane Murphy was forced across the goal to clear a Rathmore ball out for a 45. Two minutes later Rathmore got the goal that they had threatened just minutes earlier, giving them a 1-point advantage going into the last quarter. Both teams traded points for much of the second half and it looked as though the game was going to finish level pegging until Micheal Burns was taken down inside the small square with just 5 minutes of normal time left. Micheal followed up and converted the penalty, helping us to finish worthy winners. We now face Kenmare at home next weekend in the semi-final.

LGFA: U14 EK League. The girls had a great win on Sunday evening in their first East Kerry League game against Laune Rangers at home. Things were tight in a tough first half, in which we played into a strong breeze, with neither side troubling the scoreboard. We got to grips with things in the second

half and scored an impressive 3:06 with the wind at our backs to bring it back to just a goal between us. We kicked several fine scores, and our backs were always on top. All 19 girls gave everything, it was great to get back to winning ways again.

STREET LEAGUE: Our Street League began on Sunday last. 200 boys and girls will be taking part with almost 40 coaches looking after 20 teams We continue on Friday August 25th.

They were also a surprise visit from Gavin White and Kayleigh Cronin. A special mention to Lorcan Martin for organising the camp and to all the organisers and coaches.

Thanks to all our loyal supporters and hopefully everyone can come along again next weekend for another big game against Austin Stack’s in Glenflesk.

Kilcummin GAA

RESULT: Kerry Petroleum Intermediate Club Championship. Kilcummin 0-13 Legion 0-9. This game determined who would be group winners and have home advantage for the Quarter Finals and certainly Kilcummin rose to the challenge. Keenly contested both sides exchanged points but the last ten minutes saw Kilcummin kick four unanswered points to lead by 0-9 to 0-6 at half time. The second half saw Kilcummin retain control and despite playing against the wind outscored the visitors 0-4 to 0-3. Legion tried to the final whistle but encountered a determined Kilcummin defence where Dara O’Callaghan, Sean O’Leary and Kevin Mc Sweeney excelled. Kieran Murphy and Kevin Gorman were excellent while the likes of Gary O’Leary and Philip O’Leary manufactured the winning scores. The reward is a home venue in the Q/F against Milltown/Castlemaine this weekend.

OSKARS: Excitement is building for the upcoming OsKars event incorporating Kilcummin and Glenflesk. With fund raisers being arranged at present and attention turning to rehearsals in September a lot of work has gone on in the background by the committee in securing sponsorship. We welcome KWD's sponsorship again as they did in the previous event in 2018. Everyone involved is working hard to make the December event a really successful occasion and generate much needed funds for both clubs.

Muckross Rowing Club

UPCOMING: The club has three final events for the 2023/24 rowing season. On Saturday, September 9, the club makes its annual trip to Kenmare for the Kenmare Offshore Regatta. On the following Saturday, September 16, Courtmacsherry Regatta will be the club’s final offshore or coastal event of the season. The rescheduled Rowing Ireland 1k Classic Regatta is now also set for Saturday 16th September at the National Rowing Centre in Cork. This event brings together the flatwater rowing categories which are raced over distances of 1000m and 1500m, including Junior 14, Junior 15 and Masters. These categories now sit outside of the main national championship regatta weekend, which was held in July for racing over 2000m, including all Championship grades at adult and Junior 18 level as well as non-Championship Junior 16 racing. The 1k Classic was twice postponed this summer due to poor weather.

SUMMER CAMPS: Well done to the participants in our two Summer Camps held in August. There was great energy and a wonderful atmosphere at the boathouse over the two weeks. We look forward to welcoming new rowers in the weeks ahead, details of beginner training to follow. Watch our social media for the latest updates.

CONGRATULATIONS: From all at MRC, our congratulations to Ronan Spillane and Laura Sexton on their recent engagement.

END OF SEASON BBQ: It was with regret that the club’s end of season barbeque was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. An alternative date for October will be confirmed soon.

NATIONAL U16 STROKEPLAY AND INTER-COUNTY: A great day for the club and county last Saturday at the National

U16 Strokeplay and Inter-County Championships in Seapoint in Termonfeckin, Co Louth with Brian McCarthy, Nathan Cronin (on the day of his 16th birthday) and Ronan Bennett contributed to Kerry's fourth (but very narrow) straight National U16 Inter-County win. Brian was also second in the National U16 Boys Singles Strokeplay with his 36hole score of four under par but the big news after Saturday was that based on their performances over the last two years, Brian, Nathan and Listowel's A Jay Barrett have been selected for the Irish U16 team to take part in the International Challenge against Catalonia in October. We’re delighted to hear that Brian will follow in his dad Derry’s footsteps in representing Ireland and also for both Nathan and himself to follow Conor McCarthy and Cillian Courtney in playing in these challenges against the Catalans! We thank both Deerpark and Gearoid Cronin once more for looking after our U16’s in making the long journey to the Northeast.

SUNDAY DRAWS: Fourball Betterball-

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

CUP: Sunday last, the 27th of August, the Club fished for the Church Island Cup on Lough Lein. A fantastic turnout on the day started onto the waters in a transition for flat calm to squally conditions, not too many smiles about as rain and wind became the order of the day for a number of hours but conditions mellowed in the afternoon and some great fishing was recorded. Top rod on the day was that of Aidan O’Callaghan and Dan O’Connor landed a cracking trout of 395 Grams weight to claim heaviest trout. Top 5 anglers were as follows: 1st Aidan O’Callaghan, 2nd Tom Dennehy, 3rd Liam Buckley, 4th Mick Linehan, 5th Ger Bunyan.

ANGLER OF THE YEAR: The points league for angler of the year is now a very close race indeed. With a nose in front Steve Cambell is on 23 points, followed on 22 by Tom Dennehy. Dave Mears is on 19 points just behind and Liam Buckley on 18.5 and Diarmuid Linehan on 16 points are within striking distance as well. With three more competitions on the schedule, 165 points are yet to be allocated so the race is far from over and open to a wildcard emerging from the chasing pack!

SPONSORSHIP: Our Annual Competition looms large on the 17th of September, and we are presently seeking sponsorship from local businesses in sponsoring teams for this event - we are very grateful for the wonderful support received to date from the business community and wish to acknowledge this.

COMPETITION: Next up on the calendar is the Mar Loughlan Competition - we were unable to take part in that last year, owing to a postponement due to weather which could not fit in our schedule, so we are delighted to be invited back this year and are looking for a good turnout of our members to ensure we make the best possible effort to again become holders of the Mar Loughlan Shield. It is taking place on Sunday the 10th on Lough Lein - entries as always to any club officer soonest please.
