Re-usable coffee cups leads to a marked reduction in litter

Street cleaning staff from Killarney Municipal District are reporting a marked decrease in litter on the town’s streets since the introduction of reusable coffee cups last month.

Last week the business community of Killarney announced a project to end single use coffee cups.

The town will become the first in Ireland to do so. After a soft launch in early July the project officially kicked off at the end of last month.

The move to re-usables is estimated to remove over one million single use coffee cups from the town annually.

The town’s street staff – the unsung heroes that keep the centre spick and span –are already noticing a marked decrease of litter during their early morning rounds. The reduction in the amount of disposable coffee cups being placed in bins means that the bins are no longer over flowing each morning. As a result there is less litter on the streets of town that needs attention every morning.

Gavin Gardiner is one of those unsung heroes out on the streets early doors every morning. The decision to move to a reusable takeaway system has been taken following an agreement by 25 local independent coffee shops and 21 hotels.

“There has been a massive improvement since the coffee cups started, there has been at least 50 or 60 percent reduction, if not more in the amount of cups going in to the bins. It is a great help for all of us,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

“The coffee cups take up an awful lot inside, and there are less cups on the ground.”

So far the scheme is being led by cafes hotels and restaurants but Gavin maintains that shops and supermarkets need

to join the project too.

“I think everyone should buy into it, I think the shops should buy into it too. It is a great initiative. I hope they carry it on in to other towns and cities and it is great that Killarney is the first town to do this.”

Invasive water lily discovered on Killarney’s Lakes

There are concerns that a non-native plant now prevalent on the lakes of Killarney could be the new rhododendron.

The invasive fringed water lily has been discovered in bays on Lough Leane.

The National Parks and Wildlife Services has issued warning to boat owners. They have been warned not to drive through the plants and to wash boats thoroughly before landing them.

There are fears that the plant could overcome marine, animal and plant life in the lakes in much the same way rho-

dodendron has taken over much of the National Park.

The NPWS is calling on all lake users to be vigilant and help reduce the risk of spreading the invasive species.

Officials are monitoring the lake waters and looking for ways to contain the plants spread.

Water lilies thrive in shallow waters and the waters near Ross Bay on Lough Leane, near where the plant has been found is benefiting from the high-nutrient discharges from the nearby Killarney Waste Water Plant.

Street hero Gavin Gardiner has noticed a marked reduction in litter on the town's streets since the introduction of re-useable coffee cups.

Tribute to late Terence Casey

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has led the tributes to businessman Terence Casey who passed away unexpectedly on Monday.

The town’s business organisation said he will be fondly remembered as a man of great determination and drive in his business life and for his wonderful compassion in his dealings with the public, particularly families following a bereavement when a case was referred to the coroner’s court.

A statement issued by joint presidents, Pádraig Treacy and Johnny McGuire, on behalf of chamber members, said Terence was a pioneering businessman in the town for a number of decades and he built up a hugely respected legal firm when opting to follow in the professional footsteps of his father, Michael.

“As some of his colleagues have observed, it was when he was appointed coroner for South Kerry in 2002 that Terence really found his true calling and he filled that demanding role with skill, with purpose and with wonderful compassion for the families of the bereaved,” the chamber statement said.

“Families going through a very difficult and emotional time following the death of a loved one, often in harrowing circumstances, knew that Terence Casey was on their side, that he was looking out for them and he worked hard to make the process as painless as possible,” the joint presidents added.

Terence Casey’s great business acumen was also acknowledged and, in many respects, he was ahead of his time when

opening The Dungeon, a camping supplies and sports shop with a fun novelty section that was like a magnet on Plunkett Street for outdoor enthusiasts and children.

“The Dungeon later moved to College Street – adjacent to the music and electrical store run by Terence’s brother Owen – and it became the established and reliable supplier of school books and stationery for a whole generation of children and teenagers as well as stocking thousands of second-hand books,” the chamber stated.

The chamber also acknowledged Ter-

ence Casey’s major role as a founder member of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, which was set up in 1966 after two students were killed within days of each other on Carrauntoohil.

A law student in Dublin at the time, Terence later recalled travelling on his motorbike to Baldonnell, in the 1970s, to try to persuade the army air corps to get involved in mountain rescue.

“At the time the air corps were involved only in sea rescue. We trained them into mountain rescue here in Kerry,” he said in an interview many years later. Terence devoted many years as a vol-

He comes into the World Rally Championship event in good form having won the 10k walk at National Senior Outdoor Championships at Morton Stadium in Dublin late last month.

Speaking at the team announcement,

Athletics Ireland Director of High Performance, Paul McNamara said:

“With 16 individual athletes selected, and the potential for further additions in the coming days, plus two relay squads, this is the largest team we have sent to a World Championships, despite the higher qualification standards than any previous edition of this championships, and with eight athletes inside the A-standard. This team includes multiple athletes, both seasoned campaigners and rising stars, that are primed to make an impact, building further on the upward trajectory seen in Oregon and Munich in 2022.”

unteer with the team and he sowed the seeds of the magnificent service it provides today.

“Terence Casey has been part and parcel of business and professional life in Killarney for decades and he has played a big role in the success of the town by providing a top class service to his clients and customers,” the statement added. The chamber expressed condolences to Terence’s wife, Geraldine, children Niamh and Terry, son-in-law John, grandchildren Ádah, Fíadh and Donnacha, his brother Owen and his extended family.

Deacon Mark Moriarty will be ordained in to the Diocese of Kerry at a special ceremony at St Mary’s Cathedral at 3pm on Sunday.

Just over a year ago, on August 7, 2022 Mark was ordained a deacon.

His first mass will is scheduled for Monday August 14.

Presentation convent sells for €3

million

A landmark town centre building has been sold for twice its asking price.

The Presentation Convent has been on the market since last October,

Estate agents Sherry FitzGerald Coghlan advertised the property for €1.5 million but it was sold this week for €3 million. The beautiful three storey convent and chapel, a protected structure, has a foot print of over 1,411 square metres. It was sold with full planning permission granted for redevelopment as an assist-

ed living property comprising seven one bedroom apartments, and six en-suite bedrooms.

In its current state the building is home to 26 bedrooms, kitchen, dining room and a chapel.

The €3 million sale price is one of the highest ever for a residential property in Killarney.

Mark has spent the last number of years in formation for the priesthood in St Patrick’s College, Maynooth.

A former student at St Brendan’s College, He is the son of well-known Legion GAA members Brian and Marjorie.

"Congratulations and the very best of luck to Mark Moriarty who has a big day this Sunday. Traffic chaos at St Oliver’s needs to be addressed

A Killarney councillor is calling for a dedicated drop off and pick up zone at St Oliver’s National School during peak times.

With back to school less than a month away, newly appointed councillor Martin Grady does not want to see a return to the chaos that has blighted the Whitebridge, Ballycasheen and Woodlawn

areas during school times in recent years.

“It’s complete chaos and gridlock for the parents, bus drivers and guardians dropping and collecting their children from schools ,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “There’s been a number of minor collisions. It makes it very difficult for the residents of Ballycasheen and Whitebridge and Woodlawn to access their homes.”

Killarney girl on Irish softball team that secured World Cup qualification

The Irish qualified for the WSBC after finishing third in the European Championships in Prague over the weekend.

New York-based Andrea has strong Killarney and Cork connections.

She is the daughter of David and Noreen Hegarty and granddaughter of Nancy Hegarty, Park Road, and Eileen Twomey, Rowels, Meelin.

She is part of the Irish Under 18 softball team.

Ireland defeated some of the top teams in Europe to secure their bronze medal place, including two wins to Great Britain.

Throughout the week, they played in a round robin tournament against Spain, The Netherlands, Czechia, the Ukraine, Israel, Germany and Italy.

Their final game was intense, as they came up against The Netherlands, who had beaten them earlier in the week.

The Irish team hit the scoreboard early with an amazing performance from Andrea who smashed a two-run home run.

Homecoming parade planned for Ladies Kerry football team

Win or lose on Sunday, Killarney is planning a homecoming parade for the Kerry ladies team on Monday.

The Kerry Ladies Gaelic Football team face Dublin in the All Ireland Football final in Croke Park this Sunday.

On Monday evening, the Kerry Ladies Gaelic Football Association and Kerry County Council will put on a home coming welcome party in Killarney town

centre.

The Kerry team will travel by bus, down Lewis Road, and College Street before arriving on stage at the Glebe Car Park. This event is scheduled to get underway at 6 pm.

As a result, College St will close to traffic from 4 30 pm on Monday. There will be car parking restrictions in the Glebe Car Park all day and all cars need to be removed from the car park by 7am Monday morning.

The entire game was nail-biting stuff and came to a tie break and entered into an eighth inning.

The Irish came out on top and, as a result, took home the Bronze medal and secured their place in the WBSC World Cup.

Dog owners must take responsibility for lamb attacks

Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill has condemned the injury and death caused to sheep on mid-Kerry farms recently.

On Saturday sheep farmer Tomás O'Leary discovered 11 dead lambs on his farm between Faha and Beaufort. During a routine flock check on he found that the animals had been killed by dogs. A further 18 were injured as a result of the attack.

“These incidents are very traumatic for all involved and on top of that, are bringing financial hardship to our hard pressed sheep farmers. Unfortunately the incidences appear to be on the increase and

the losses higher than before,” said Cahill. “We all love our pets, but we must all take responsibility for them and ensure they have no opportunity to stray onto farmland, worrying livestock and in some instances, causing injury or death. We are talking about people’s livelihoods here, not just the pure cruelty involved.”

“Do you know where your dog is 24/7?

Are you entirely satisfied your pet is not straying onto lands stocked with sheep and cattle? If this continues, severe penalties will have to be imposed, both financially and on the freedom of movement of dangerous pets. And that’s the last thing anybody wants.”

Are our rail crossings safe?

Residents in the Headford area have raised concerns after railway crossings malfunctioned over the weekend.

The level crossing in the Headford and in other areas in Cork and Kerry started flashing red to advise that a train was coming at midnight.

However the barrier did not drop to protect motorists.

Adding to the residents confusion the lights started flashing in the early hours of Saturday morning and continued to do so until around 5 am. There are no journeys scheduled for these hours.

Motorists were unsure if they should enter the level crossing, and risk getting struck by an oncoming train, or wait for the non-existent train to pass through.

One resident contacted Irish Rail.

In an email seen by the Killarney Advertis-

er company official said there may have been an electrical fault on the line.

The email said: “ There was a serious electrical fault somewhere on the signalling network that affected not just Headford but level crossings all along the Kerry line and also on Cork suburban routes towards Midleton.

“That is the only information I have, and I can only apologise on behalf of Irish Rail for the inconvenience caused not just to you but across the network.”

Locals say it took five hours for an Irish Rail engineer to visit the site and correct the problem. The red lights were flashing for most of the night.

However, it begs the question, are our rail crossings safe?

Almost 300 people die at level crossings across Europe every year. Level crossing accidents account for 1pc of road deaths in Europe but 31pc of all railway fatalities.

The farm is home to a range of ecological and native Irish habitats including ponds, bog woodland, reed bed systems, and native hedgerows. This is a great opportunity to visit the farm and to expand your

knowledge about our native habitats and species, and their interactions with farming practices.”

Free entry to Ross Castle on Saturday

There will be free admission to Ross Castle on Saturday as part of Heritage Week Events.

National Heritage Week celebrates Ireland’s cultural, built and natural heritage. It brings together volunteers, community groups and heritage enthusiasts to share their experience, knowledge culture and practices.

‘Living Heritage’ runs from August 12 -20 this year and Ross Castle is a centre piece of this celebration.

Ross Castle perches on an inlet of Lough Leane. It is likely that the Irish chieftain O’Donoghue Mór built it in the fifteenth century.

Legend has it that O’Donoghue still slumbers under the waters of the lake. Every seven years, on the first morning of May, he rises on his magnificent white horse.

If you manage to catch a glimpse of him you will enjoy good fortune for the rest of your life.

Ross Castle was the last place in Munster to hold out against Cromwell. Its defenders, then led by Lord Muskerry, took confidence from a prophecy holding that the castle could only be taken by a ship. Knowing of the prophecy, the Cromwellian commander, General Ludlow, launched a large boat on the lake. When the defenders saw it, this hastened the surrender – and the prophecy was fulfilled.

Groups benefitting for the funding include: Banna Community Rescue Boats Ireland will receive €100,000 for the purchase of a lifeboat; Order of Malta

Kerry is approved funding of €65,000 to support their community-based ambulance transport system; Ballybunnion Sea and Cliff Rescue Service will receive €49,600 for the purchase of a Launching Vehicle; Cumann Tithiochta na Dromoda Teo will receive €39,510 for the purchase of a hybrid electric vehicle and Castleisland Day Care is approved funding of €39,273 for the purchase of a five-seater wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Minister Foley said: “Community organisations, first responder groups and key voluntary cancer care organisations continuously provide vital services to some of Kerry’s most vulnerable people, enhancing the communities they serve and often on a voluntary basis.

I would like to thank my Cabinet Colleague Minister Humphreys for confirming this funding of over €300,000 which is an endorsement of the excellent work carried out by these community groups and organisations on a daily basis throughout Kerry.”

Calls for adult respite centre in Killarney

A Kerry Fianna Fáil Councillor raised the lack of Adult Respite Care in Kerry with the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly at a meeting in Killarney.

Parents and guardians of people with severe disabilities are generally happy with the Respite Service provided for patients up to the age of 18 in Kerry, Councillor Michael Cahill has claimed, but as adults they are poorly served.

“When a patient turns 18, and are regarded as an adult, the Respite Service available is totally inadequate. There is one Respite House, situated in Listowel, covering Kerry and West Limerick, capable of taking two to three people at a time. Obviously, it is difficult to get any appointment, not alone a couple of overnights respite, which are essential for both patient and guardian, to ensure everybody can recharge their batteries and be in a position to carry on,” said Cahill. "Many parents and Guardians are at their wits end trying to cope 24/7 and need and deserve a proper Respite service.”

“I advised Minister Donnelly that, to provide a basic Adult Respite Service for Kerry, there would need to be four more such houses located around the county. The additional facilities should be provided in the Killorglin/Mid Kerry area, the Dingle/West Kerry area, the Killarney/ East Kerry area and in Tralee,” added Councillor Cahill.

"I asked the Minister to arrange for the HSE to examine this proposal and I intend to pursue this matter with the Department and the Minister to ensure that we obtain the best possible outcome.”

Comparisons between the sale of the Conor Pass and Killarney National Park

Seán Kelly, MEP for Ireland South, has urged the Irish Government to take action and purchase the stunning land and forestry on Kerry's Conor Pass to create a national park.

The site, which includes four lakes - Pedlar’s Atlea, Beirne, and Clogharee - along with a beautiful waterfall and mature forest, presents a unique opportunity for the government to show leadership in nature restoration.

The expansive site, bordered on the west by the Owenmore river, offers breath-taking views over Dingle Town, Brandon Bay, and the majestic Atlantic Ocean. Currently, the land attracts thousands of walkers and tourists each year, making it an ideal location for a national park that can benefit both nature conservation and Ireland's tourism industry. The site approximately 1,000 acres of land and nearly 400 acres of valuable forestry.

Killarney-based Kelly said: Killarney’s tourism has benefited massively from a national park, so there can be tangible economic benefits beyond just the significant benefits for biodiversity. We have discussed nature restoration intensively over the last number of months and this is a golden opportunity for the government to show leadership and dispel some of the damaging rhetoric that was associated with that debate.”

"Conor Pass has already garnered international attention, with foreign buyers

expressing interest in just a few days. If the government were to submit a bid, it would be better to do it sooner rather than later. A holistic and long-term view should be taken into account for consideration, but I really do think a serious assessment should be carried out."

Kelly called on the government to show leadership and seize this golden opportunity to create a national park on the Conor Pass. The purchase of this picturesque land and forestry would not only enrich Ireland's natural landscape but also send a strong message about the country's commitment to nature conservation and sustainable tourism.

FRIENDS OF THE EARTH

Meanwhile Friends of the Irish Environment have appealed to the owner of lands at the Connor Pass in County Kerry to gift the lands to the State ‘in the tradition of Killarney National Park’. Killarney National Park was previously the Muckross Estate, and its 105 square kilometres was gifted to the nation by US Senator Vincent Bourne in 1932.

“The opportunity to have a national Park in one the most rugged and magnificent parts of Ireland is one that it would be a shame to miss. We established five na-

tional parks in the last 20 years of the 20th century – including Charles Haughey’s opening of the Wicklow National Park in 1986 – but we have established none since the turn of the century,” said FIE Director Tony Lowes.

“The €10 million price 1400 acres was a ‘American fantasy’ at €7000 an acre. He pointed out that although the final price is still not known, four times this area was added to the Wicklow National Park in 2016 where the asking price was €2.5 million.

As the owner is returning to the United States, Mr. Lowes said that even if he was unable to gift the entire holding to the State a “meeting of minds over a combination of charitable donations and tax advantages could be arranged with good will on both sides.”

On Newstalk he addressed the issue of the €10 million being better spent on social housing in the area, as suggested by Deputy Healy Rae, pointing out that the “multiple values of nature conservation were poorly understood,”

“It is not simply that tourism thrives in areas where we have our national parks with an economic vitality that is clearly seen in Killarney, but proper land management can only be assured by ownership,”

He told Newstalk: “If allowed to regen-

erate properly, you would find that birds and creatures of all kinds would flock to it, including tourists. The skies would fill and the rivers would again be full of fish, as they once were before.”

“If you drive the Connor Pass now’, Mr. Lowes, who used to live in the area, said, “You will see that the rare ungrazed areas are lush and thick with vegetation, slowly evolving into scrub which will one day become native forest. Those areas over grazed by sheep are held together by the thinnest layer of grass.”

“It's not simply that proper land management would bring back our native flora and fauna, but our coastal waters are green with algae blooms right now. This is driven in part by the impact of the nutrients in the sheep faeces. While overgrazing is not the only cause of our coastal dead zones, algae growth driven by these fertilising faeces decay. This exhausts the oxygen, ultimately resulting in dead zones with the death of fish, shellfish, and other aquatic organisms,” FIE has written to the owner, Michael Noonan, encouraging him to engage with the Government.

“In the long term, these modest beginnings could form the basis of a wider and more significant Park, stretching from Mount Brandon to Dingle.”

A joint project between National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Fota Wildlife park has to date released over 9,000 natterjack toadlets

This year 1,600 toadlets were released around their native Castlegregory, Co. Kerry into ponds which were specially created for them by local farmers

The weather this year has been favourable for natterjacks breeding and spawning in the wild.

Two hundred natterjack toadlets were released on August 8 on a farm in Castlegregory.

The toadlets have been bred through a joint conservation project between

Natterjack toadlets welcomed home to the Kingdom

the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Fota Wildlife Park which aims to protect this endangered species and work with the local farming community to return it to its natural habitat. Over 9,000 toadlets have been released since the project began seven years ago. Minister for Heritage and Electoral Reform Malcolm Noonan visited Castlegregory to watch the release and said:

“It’s wonderful to see the support and enthusiasm among the local community for the Natterjack toad. The habitat here in Castlegregory is unique and the efforts of local farmers to enhance it by creating ponds will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the fortunes of these beloved amphibians. The farmers will see benefits too through a new results-based scheme designed specifically to support these measures. I’d like to congratulate the conservation teams in the National Parks

and Wildlife Service and Fota Wildlife Park, as well as the amazing community here in Kerry that is so committed to the conservation of the habitats and species that also call the Kingdom home.”

Originally native to the areas of Castlemaine Harbour and Castlegregory, the natterjack population declined over time due to land reclamation and as agricultural practices changed. The natterjack is vulnerable to a high mortality rate of 90% in the wild. The toads need access

to shallow, sunny ponds to breed and avoid predators. Conservation efforts to date have focused on the toad’s natural habitat so that the species can breed and thrive. This year’s toadlets were released on a local farm in Castlegregory, into ponds which were created just ten years ago especially for natterjacks through the NPWS Pond Creation scheme. Farmers can also now avail of new, results based farm plan scheme specifically for natterjack toads.

Muckross Rowing Club to celebrate successful year on the water

This Saturday, Muckross Rowing Club is marking the conclusion of a very successful rowing year with an end of season barbeque at the Muckross Park Hotel.

Reflecting on a busy year, the club competed in numerous time trial and regatta events culminating in the Irish National Rowing Championships in mid-July. Muckross Rowing Club had 34 crews competing over three days, with representation from Junior 16 to Intermediate.

The club also had five of its former junior members racing with their university clubs.

“The Championship weekend was not without its share of turbulence and high drama thanks to the weather conditions, which brought strong winds and rain over the first two days of competition. Undeterred, our crews put in a great performance for the club,” said the club’s Tim O’Shea.

The Men’s Junior 18 Quad crew of Daniel Fleming, Ian Coffey, Daniel Daly and Con Stack were second in their final and claimed the club’s first national championship medals in this event.

Daniel and Ian had further success taking bronze in the Men’s Junior 18 Double in a field of 52 crews.

Also among the medals were Jack Murphy and Max Coyne, who claimed silver in the final of the Men’s Junior 16 Double out of 37 crew entries.

Jack narrowly missed out on a qualifying spot in the Men’s Junior 16 Single with a great performance in his time trial to finish seventh overall.

Other highlights of the weekend included a number of time trial wins and other top 6 finishes including in the Men’s Intermediate Single (Marko Tot), Women’s J18 Double (Faye O’Neill, Katie Doolan), Womens Junior 16 Eight (Khim Fleming, Rachel Fuller, Muireann O Donoghue, Eva Stack, Ellie Doolan, Angelina Kenny, Keela O Connor, Aine O Sullivan), Womens J16 Quad (Khim Fleming,

Rachel Fuller, Muireann O’Donoghue, Eva Stack), Womens J16 Double (Khim Fleming, Rachel Fuller) and Men’s Junior 16 Quad (Jack Murphy, Max Coyne, Gearoid O’Connor, Rory Clancy). Ben Cussen raced the time trials of the Men’s Intermediate Single with Max Coyne, Jack Murphy, Gearoid O Connor, Sean O’Donovan, Aine O’Sullivan and Abigeal Real racing in the time trials of the Junior 16 Single Sculls but were outside the top six places to make the A Finals.

The Women’s J18 Quad crew of Faye O Neill, Grace O' Connor, Katie Doolan and Clodagh Lucey just missed out on a final place in their time trial. Racing with UL RC, Niamh Coffey and Caoimhe O’Sullivan enjoyed a terrific weekend claiming four and three titles respectively across the Senior and Intermediate grades.

Finn O’Sullivan and Patrick Buckley were also silver medallists for UL in the Men’s Intermediate Four, narrowly missing out on gold at the finish line.

“The results highlight the great progression made across all age categories, with brilliant results considering the high standard of competition in each event,” added Tim.

“The performances also provide great foundations to build on for next season. To celebrate the successful year, the club will hold a Fundraising Barbecue at the Muckross Park Hotel from 6 pm and the support of members present and past to celebrate the club’s achievements would be greatly appreciated.

“Ticket details are available on the club’s social media and all are welcome. The barbecue will also be a celebration of the achievements of Daniel Daly and Caoimhe O’Sullivan who represented Ireland at the Home International Regatta at Lough

Training tips ahead of Quest Killarney

Quest Killarney, the world’s biggest adventure race, takes place on October9 in Killarney.

TOP 5 TRAINING TIPS FOR QUEST KILLARNEY

Quest Killarney is a Ireland’s top adventure race with 6 challenging routes to choose from, so regardless of your fitness levels Quest has a route for you. This requires preparation and training! To make sure you conquer your chosen challenge, here are 5 training tips to help you go further:

1. Build Endurance: Quest Killarney involves running, cycling, and kayaking, so it's crucial to build your endurance levels. Incorporate long-distance runs and bike rides into your training, gradually increasing the duration and distance so that you push your heart rate and build up stamina.

Féile Lughnasadh Milltown deemed a huge success

Milltown hosted its second Féile Lughnasadh, building on the success last year and again showcased the very best in Trad in the free, family-friendly festival.

Organiser Owen O'Shea was delighted with the 2023 event.

"Our committed team of local volunteers have been working tirelessly to deliver this totally unique event, a free festival with the very best musicians. Frankie Gavin is a legend and we are very proud to have hosted Dé Danann in Milltown. He now joins names such as The Chieftans, Sharon Shannon, Kila and many, many more to have played in our town,” he said.

The hugely popular mid-Kerry venue did not disappoint, with the unpredictable weather settling to ideal conditions for this outdoor event.

"It was great to see crowds enjoying the music in the sunshine", explained organiser Patricia Wren, "especially families who enjoyed a full day here on Sunday.

The outdoor ceilí is a regular favourite in Milltown, and it was a wonderful spectacle with a full floor dancing to Uí Bhriain. While the highlight of the festival was Dé Danann, the other acts wowed the crowds too, with Pólca 4 and The Four Winds performing memorable gigs on the outdoor stage.

Local groups continued the revelry into

the night in local bars, as well as the Festival Club.

"We were concerned about the weather, being such an outdoor event", said local CCE Chairman Turlough O'Brien, "But the parade, Lughnasadh bonfire, outdoor gigs, ceilí, craft fair and street entertainment competition all worked a treat."

The organisers are grateful to the many sponsors from the community who helped make it happen, as well as the public who bought tickets for the draw.

"We sold tickets throughout the festival", said organiser Deirdre O'Gorman, "and I must say people were so generous. We had an excellent prize and I suppose people knew we working hard to foster our tradition and culture and were happy to help,” she said.

“Many passing tourists were surprised to come upon such an authentic cultural event, and I'd say it was the holiday highlight for many", said festival organiser Vincent Prendergast.

It is now a major event in the Kerry summer, and plans are underway for next year's event, with fans already speculating on the headline act for 2024.

2. Train for Terrain: Killarney's terrain is diverse, including hills, forests, trails and lakes. To prepare, mix up your training sessions with hill workouts and trail running. Practice running or cycling on uneven surfaces to improve your balance and ability to adapt to different conditions.

3. Practice Transitions: Transitioning between running, cycling, and kayaking can be physically and mentally demanding, especially in a race environment. Set up practice transition areas during your training sessions that simulate race conditions. Get a friend to help you! Practice switching between gear

and disciplines to reduce your transition time.

4. Include Strength Training: In addition to cardio workouts, don't forget to also incorporate strength training. Strong muscles help with endurance and prevent injury. Focus on exercises that target your legs, core, and upper body, as these are the muscles most relied on during the event. Bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, push-ups, and planks are recommended.

5. Nutrition and Hydration: Attention to nutrition and hydration is vital to be able to perform at your best during Quest Killarney. Train your body to tolerate different foods and hydration to find the one that work best for you during long workouts. Experiment with different snacks or energy gels during your training to figure out what maintains your energy levels without messing with your digestion. Don’t try any new gels or combinations on race day! Make sure to check out our training plans on our website www.questadventureseries.com to suit all levels and our blogs for more tips and advice. In summary, remember to listen to your body and avoid overtraining. Build in rest days as part of your training to allow your muscles to recover and prevent injury. Gradually increase the intensity and volume of your workouts to avoid undue strain on your body. With tried and tested training, consistent over the weeks leading up to the event, you'll be better prepared to take on the challenges of Quest Killarney.

Advertised rent rate up 2.4%

Advertised rents across the country are up by 2.4% between April and June compared to the first quarter.

According to Daft.ie, the average market rent nationally is just under €1,800 equating to 10.7% higher than the same period one year ago.

The availability of rental properties remains the big driver with supply low and demand high.

The data shows that over the last few months there are signs that the number of homes available to rent has increased, with 1,200 on the market nationally, up 460 on the same date last year.

Author of the Daft.ie Rental Report, Trinity College Dublin economist Ronan Lyons, said the trend recorded in Dublin was noticeably different to the rest of the country.

In Dublin advertised rent was up by 0.3% in the second quarter when compared to the first.

The rest of the country, the increase was 4.3%.

"The figures in this latest rental market report indicate something of a split in market conditions," said Mr Lyons.

"In Dublin, the construction of new rental housing – together perhaps with the ef-

fect of layoffs in some larger employers – has led to an easing of pressure in the open market."

"Outside the capital, however, the lack of new rental homes means that the imbalance between supply and demand is still there."

The report also includes information on rents paid by sitting tenants and shows that on average, rents paid by those in a tenancy increased by 3.8% over the last twelve months, The bigger percentage increases came outside Dublin at 4.5%, compared to 3.2% in the capital.

36 killed in Hawaii as residents jump into the ocean to flee wildfires

At least 36 people have died after wildfires, fanned by winds from a distant hurricane, devastating the resort city of Lahaina on Hawaii's Maui island.

The flames forced thousands to flee, including some who jumped into the Pacific Ocean.

Maui County officials said that 36 people were found dead and firefighters battled three major blazes. Western Maui was closed to all but emergency workers and evacuees.

More than 11,000 tourists were evacuated from Maui. Some were forced to jump into the Pacific Ocean to escape the smoke and fire conditions, prompting the US Coast Guard to rescue them, according to a Maui County press release.

Taking 4,000 steps a day can reduce dementia risk

If you need a reason to get up and move more, here it is - a newly published study finds that walking 10,000 steps per day helps lower your risk of developing dementia. In fact, even 4,000 steps a day is enough to decrease dementia risk by one-quarter, according to the study published in JAMA Neurology.

"There is evidence that physical activity can enhance dementia prevention amongst the general population. Yet, people are not sufficiently active," Borja del Pozo Cruz, PhD, an associate professor in population health at the University of Southern Denmark and the lead author of the study, told Health. "We thought that by providing specific stepping rec-

ommendations, people would pay more attention to physical activity, as steps and walking are something everyone understands and require very little resources."

This is an important breakthrough at a time when dementia numbers are rising rapidly—55 million people worldwide live with dementia and the World Health Organization reports there are nearly 10 million new cases each year. What's more, a 2022 study published in The Lancet forecasts the number of dementia cases in people over 40 will triple by 2050.

Researchers found that people who walked an average of 9,826 steps a day appeared to be the least likely to develop dementia. Specifically, walking nearly 9,800 steps was needed to reduce dementia risk by 50%.

"The greatest reductions in dementia risk was achieved at 10,000 steps per day. Although popular, this target has never before been studied under rigorous scientific designs," said Dr. del Pozo Cruz. The least amount of walking where researchers still observed an effect on dementia risk was 3,826 steps. Walking nearly 3,800 steps, researchers found, was linked to a 25% lower incidence of dementia. This finding is also in line with a 2020 study that found that taking at least 4,000 steps a day was enough to lower a person's mortality risk.

The key takeaway here? Walking 10,000 steps a day is a popular goal, but the study suggests you can already start seeing health benefits by walking 4,000 steps daily.

New Covid-19 variant Eris detected in Ireland

A new variant of Covid-19, designated EG.5, named Eris has been detected in Ireland, according to the Health Service Executive.

The World Health Organization has not designated EG.5 as a variant of concern or a variant of interest, but the lesser rating as a variant under monitoring (VUM).

The HSE said that Eris is more transmissible than previous circulating variants. It said there is currently no evidence of increased clinical severity of infection in

OVER 5,700 notices to quit issued to tenants

OVER 5,735 notices to quit were issued to tenants from landlords in the second quarter of 2023, new data from the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) shows, 1,000 up on the first quarter this year.

In Q2, 3,633 landlords said they were issuing an eviction notice because they were selling the property. This is up from 2,631 in Q1 and 2,513 in the last quarter of 2021.

In 2022, legislation came into effect that requires landlords to send a copy of all notices of termination to the RTB on the same day it is served on the tenant.

Sinn Féin TD and the party's housing spokesperson, Eoin Ó Broin, said the increase in eviction notices was not

surprising.

"Unfortunately, none of this is a surprise. Once the ban on no-fault evictions ended, we expected to see an increase in notices to quit," Mr Ó Broin said.

He said that it was clear that landlords selling their properties were a key driver of the rising notices to quit.

Mr Ó Broin added that it was "logical" to assume that while not all people evicted will become homeless, there is a link between evictions and the record level of homelessness across the state. While he called for the reintroduction of the no-fault eviction ban, Mr Ó Broin admitted that it alone was not enough and that there needed to be further investment in cost-rental and social housing.

The HSE has recorded a further rise in Covid-19 cases in hospitals to 408 cases, up from 121 two weeks ago. 12 people are in ICU with the virus, compared with 11 two weeks ago.

The HSE said that the overall number of patients in ICU with Covid-19 remains low.

Since the pandemic, there have been over 1.7 million PCR confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland and 9,125 deaths recorded.

Elon Musk to auction off Twitter memorabilia

Elon Musk is putting Twitter building signs and other items from the company up for auction after recently rebranding the company as X.

Since buying the social media platform last year, Mr Musk has cut thousands of

jobs in an effort to lower costs.

The auction has been called "Twitter Rebranding: Online Auction Featuring Memorabilia, Art, Office Assets & More!"

One of the Twitter signs on offer is still fixed to the company's headquarters on 10th Street in San Francisco.

Last month, an attempt to remove a different Twitter sign was temporarily halted by authorities in San Francisco.

Last month, the firm dropped the blue bird logo from its branding and replaced it with a black and white X.

"Bird is still mounted on side of the building. Buyer is responsible for hiring an SF Licensed Company with appropriate Permits"

Spotting the signs of an abusive relationship

Everyone has arguments, and everyone disagrees with their partners, family members and others close to them from time to time. But if this becomes the norm in your relationship and you feel afraid of your partner, then this is a sign of an abusive relationship. You can feel as if you have no power over your life and that you are being controlled by your partner.

• Notes of previous threats made to children or other family members

“Abuse can happen to anyone at any age and in any type of relationship. It can happen to adults and it can happen to teenagers. And you don't have to be married or living with your partner for them to act abusively towards you” says Deirdre Vann Bourke, Kerry Development Manager with South Munster Citizens Information Service.

TYPES OF ABUSE

An abusive relationship is where one person uses abuse to control and have power over their partner in an intimate relationship. It can be:

• Physical abuse

• Emotional abuse

• Online abuse

• Sexual abuse

• Economic (financial) abuse

• Coercive Control

“Coercive control is another type of abusive behaviour and is now a criminal offence in Ireland” confirms Deirdre. This is when a boyfriend or girlfriend, partner, husband or wife, or ex uses an ongoing pattern of controlling, coercive and threatening behaviours to trap the person in a relationship.

Coercive control can make it impossible or even dangerous to leave an abusive relationship and can include all or some forms of abuse. This can result in a person changing their routines and losing contact with family and friends. Coercive control can damage a person’s physical and emotional well-being. If you ever decide to seek protection from the Gardaí you will need to have a record of what has happened. This will provide proof and help establish that it is a pattern of abuse. Examples of evidence to support you include:

• Copies of emails, phone records or text messages

• Evidence of abuse over the internet, digital technology and social media platforms

• Records of interaction with services such as support services or medical records

• Witnesses: for example the family and friends of yours may be able to give evidence about the effect and impact of isolation from them

• Bank records to show financial control

Many young people, in particular young women, are subjected to abuse in their intimate relationships. This is called ‘intimate relationship abuse’. This is when your boyfriend, girlfriend or partner uses a pattern of abusive behaviours to gain and maintain all the power in the relationship. Deirdre warns “Abuse can happen in short-term relationships or even your first relationship. If you are worried about your relationship, you can take a relationship quiz on the website www. toointoyou.ie to see if there are warning signs that your partner’s behaviour is controlling. Examples of controlling or abusive behaviour can include:

• Controlling what you wear and who you see

• Sharing or threatening to share intimate images or videos of you without your consent

• Isolating you from family and friends to make you feel guilty if you don’t spend all your free time with them

• Bombarding you with texts and DMs and getting angry if you ignore them

• Demanding to look through your phone or social media

• Checking your text messages, email and social media accounts to keep tabs on you

• A bad temper, you feel afraid to disagree with them

• Physically attacking you or threatening to hurt you

• Threatening to hurt you, themselves or others if you end the relationship

• Forcing you to do sexual things against your will

“Any one of these signs is serious. Your partner does not need to do several or all of these things for your relationship to be abusive. If it feels wrong, it probably is. Talking with someone can help you understand what is happening within your relationship and support you to stay safe. This might be family or a close friend or you might feel more comfortable discussing your situation with someone you don’t know. There is free confidential support and information available 24-hours a day from national and local organisations.”

Young people who are worried about their own relationship or a friend’s relationship can use the free and confidential Instant Messaging Support Service at www.toointoyou.ie.

45 Ardshanavooly, Killarney 13th August 2022. R.I.P.

When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me

I want no rites in a gloom filled room

Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little, but not for long

And not with your head bowed low Remember the love that once we shared Miss me, but let me go.

1ST ANNIVERSARY BURNS (NEE KELLIHER)

In loving memory of Miriam Burns (nee Kelliher) Ardshanavooly, and formerly Upper Park Road, Killarney.

They say there is a reason

They say that time will heal

But neither time nor reason

Will change the way we feel.

For no one knows the heartache

That lies beyond our smiles

No one knows how many times

We’ve broken down and cried.

We want to tell you something

So there won’t be any doubt

You’re so wonderful to think of

But so hard to do without.

Loved with a love beyond all telling

Missed with a grief beyond all tears.

Sadly missed by your heartbroken sisters Helen, Triona and Regina, brother Seán, and their families.

Anniversary Mass is on Saturday 12th August at 6.15pm in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney.

JESUS

For this journey we all must take And each must go alone

It’s all part of the master plan

A step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick at heart

Go to the friends we know Laugh at all the things we used to do Miss me, but let me go. Loved and sadly missed by your friends and neighbours, Kaye and Jimmy.

4TH ANNIVERSARY O’LEARY

In loving memory of Brendan Joy Killarney 16th August 2022. As we lovingly remember our father Brendan on this his first anniversary, Breda, Liam, Michael, Brendan, Martin, Pat & Andrew together with Lily and the extended family wish to express our sincere thanks and gratitude.

To our friends, neighbours, family and all who called to our home, his removal, mass and burial, those far away who joined online and through your prayers. For the expressions of sympathy in person, by telephone, cards, letters, flowers and online. For the enormous support which we received of food and refreshments and journeying with us through those days. It was our father’s wish to leave this world from his own home. To achieve this we are deeply indebted to many. The ambulance personnel who brought him home, whom he regaled with his stories all the way from Tralee. The palliative care team who supported us in each step. Both Fiona and Helena who gave their time and talents unselfishly. His lifetime doctor, Dr Donal Kavanagh and in the later years Dr Ken Keoghane.

Fr. Kieran O’Brien together with the clergy and staff of the parish, for guiding and leading us with prayerful and comforting liturgies to celebrate our fathers life. To the O’Shea family and associates for the ease, dignity and care given to our father and us. The Holy Sacrifice of Mass will be offered in gratitude and thanks.

Memorare

O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of Virgins, my mother, to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O mother of the word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

1st anniversary Mass is on Saturday 19th August at 6.15pm in St Mary’s Cathedral.

1ST ANNIVERSARY

But always a wish That you were still here.

Always in our thoughts, forever in our hearts.

Sadly missed by your wife Teresa and family.

ALL-IRELAND FOOTBALL FINAL

to the final before succumbing to the Meath machine. Cynics might have wondered if that run was a flash in the pan, but it was only the beginning. Buoyed by their achievements in 2022, Kerry came out swinging in 2023 and powered their way to the Division 1 title in the spring.

The last time Kerry won the All-Ireland Ladies Football Championship - in 1993 - they were way out on their own on the all-time leaderboard with 11 titles to their name. Cork had zero, as did Dublin.

Now, Kerry and Cork are joint-top on 11 each. Dublin are on five, edging ever closer to the traditional kingpins since their maiden victory in 2010. The Kingdom will be keen to arrest that particular trend on Sunday, while also re-establishing themselves as the game’s true superpower.

Thirty years is a long time for a Kerry team to go without an All-Ireland. Now is as good a time as any to end the drought.

FOCUS

Naturally, this talented group of players will only be focused on one thing: getting over the line on Sunday and securing their first All-Ireland as individuals and as a team. They came close last year when they unexpectedly made it all the way

The Munster Championship evaded them thanks to old foes Cork but their form in the All-Ireland series has been impressive. Group stage victories over Dublin and Cavan secured a home quarter-final against Meath, and a dogged performance in terrible conditions in Tralee saw them down the two-time champs and book a date with Mayo in the last four.

Kerry were dealt a massive blow when team captain Síofra O’Shea sustained an ACL injury in training the week before the semi-final but her colleagues stepped up big time in her absence. Fellow forward Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh was especially stupendous in Semple Stadium; she kicked 1-10 as Kerry ran out 1-16 to 1-11 winners.

DOMINANCE

Dublin, meanwhile, are back on the biggest stage following a short absence. Their last final appearance came against Meath in 2021 when their quest for fivein-a-row crumbled. Remarkably, that decider in ’21 was their eighth consecutive final. They lost three-in-a-row to Cork

from 2014 to 2016 before their period of dominance began in 2017.

A number of players from the four-in-arow team are still active, such as Carla Rowe, Jennifer Dunne, Lauren Magee and Sinéad Aherne.

This year the Dubs came into the group phase as top seeds after defeating Meath in the Leinster final but they were unable to get the measure of Kerry in Parnell Park. Despite losing Emma Costello and Kayleigh Cronin to yellow cards in the second half, the away side held on for a memorable win in the capital (2-8 to 1-9).

After Dublin won their semi-final against Cork, their manager Mick Bohan suggested that Kerry were “the most physical female team” he had seen and that they “bullied” Dublin during the game in Parnell Park. It will be interesting to see if referee Shane Curley buys into those attempted mind games. Surely he won’t. Kerry also defeated Dublin when the teams met in the league in February. Goals by Síofra O’Shea, Hannah O’Donoghue and Ciara Murphy propelled them to an 11-point win in Tralee, although it’s doubtful that result will have any bearing on this weekend’s showpiece finale.

FORM

More significant is Dublin’s recent form and they looked really good in their knockout wins against Donegal (3-12 to

0-6) and Cork (2-19 to 0-13).

Cork are the one team who really troubled Kerry in 2023 so the fact that Dublin fairly dismantled them in their last outing should give the girls in blue real confidence.

As for Kerry, losing O’Shea is a major blow to their chances and Declan Quill and Darragh Long are also sweating on the availability of starting corner forward Hannah O’Donoghue.

That being said, there should also be plenty of confidence in their dressing room following a really positive campaign that has seen them go from strength to strength.

Dublin have been installed as favourites with the bookmakers, perhaps with that last outing against Cork in mind, and also O’Shea’s enforced absence.

There shouldn’t be a whole pile in it, though, and if Kerry put forward their best version of themselves they’ll have a great chance.

VERDICT: Kerry by a point.

Tickets for the final are available on Ticketmaster (€30 for adults and €15 for students, OAPs and U18s).

The intermediate and junior finals will also take place at Croke Park on Sunday. Clare play Kildare in the former with Down and Limerick meeting in the latter. All three matches will be shown live on TG4.

Cronin expecting great battle

Ahead of Sunday’s All-Ireland final between Kerry and Dublin, Eamonn Fitzgerald caught up with Kingdom full back Kayleigh Cronin

It’s back to Croke Park once more on Sunday next for yet another clash between these two great rivals. Kerry LGFA are looking to avenge last year’s defeat. I went along to sunny Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday morning last for the very well attended ‘Meet and Greet’ event with the Kerry team where I sought the opinions of people about the big game. It was wonderful to see all the players there and the young supporters getting their photos with the Kerry senior stars. The queue for An Cailín Rua was extra-long. No wonder, as she will be anything but the Cailín Ciúin on Sunday where we all hope that she will score freely once more. Louise has been the guiding light for many years with Kerry. In the recent All-Ireland semi-final she scored a massive 1-10, enough to win many games, but team managers Declan Quill and Darragh Long know only too well that even a high score by the forwards isn’t enough if the defenders concede crucial scores.

I got to interview one of the key defenders on Sunday, Kayleigh Cronin, an AllStar full back in 2022.

Eamonn Fitzgerald: It must have been a huge honour for you, Kayleigh, to win an All-Star last season.

Kayleigh Cronin: Yes, it was and very

unexpected too. It was extra special when two players from the same club won All-Stars. I was delighted for Gavin White, such a great player for several years now. What is surprising that he had not got one well before this. He deserved it with all those massive games he played, but those are individual awards. This here is all about the team, the Kerry team bidding to beat the Dubs in the final.

EF: You must be playing football for many years to reach the standard of an All-Star.

KC: Not at all. My early sporting life was in athletics until 2019. Of course, I went to all the Dr Crokes matches because my family were and are huge Crokes supporters. My father played with them for many years. The Crokes ladies kept on to me to join them and that was just four years ago playing with my club, and then I got going with Kerry.

EF: You have had great days, but I’m sure there have been disappointments as well?

KC: 100%. You win some and on other days it just doesn’t happen for you. What is important is that you learn from everything you do, and sport is no different. You just get on with it after the initial disappointment. I was one of the Kerry

people disappointed last Sunday after the men’s final. We were gutted for the boys. They were very close to winning and they had it in their hands. They can hold their heads up high with what they have achieved already. We were the for the boys last week and I know they are always supporting us. We know that we have a great battle ahead of us. We have met this Dublin team twice this year and won both. But every game is different, and it’s an even shot for both teams on Sunday. Of course, you must go into every game positive and that’s how we are approaching this All-Ireland final.

EF: How much of a loss is your brilliant captain, Síofra O’Shea.

KC: Yes, there is no doubt about that. Síofra is a massive player, but she is still our captain and is playing a huge role off the field. That won’t change. She will continue to play a captain’s role in our meetings, in the dressing room getting us out on the field in a positive frame of mind, and she will be right with us on the sideline. We are her team and aim to rally to her leadership.

EF: Is full back your favourite position?

KC: I found it very strange at first but was glad to wear the jersey for club or county, and I settled into it. Realistically I am better off there than going up beyond the halfway line. I wouldn’t be as confident up in the forwards.

EF: Do you feel intimidated by Croke Park?

KC: I have no fears about Croke Park. It’s a fine big field with loads of space just like this one here in the Fitzgerald Stadium where I am speaking to you right now. It suits us. We can play our expansive game style.

EF: What do you know about your opponents?

KC: Plenty. We know they are good with several experienced All-Ireland winners and All-Stars. We beat them twice this year, but they were close games, and they have given us plenty of heartache over the years. They will have fire in their bellies on Sunday, so we will have to bring our best game to Croke Park.

EF: What will your main role be on Sunday?

KC: Minding the centre and keeping the other girls informed how an attack is developing. My connection with our goalkeeper is vital.

EF: You are going to be playing in front of 50,000 spectators and it will be hard to be heard over that deafening noise…

KC: Yeah, communication with our keeper is vital. Butler is excellent and a very reliable goalkeeper. We have our own signals, but I won’t be telling anyone about those. There are several ways of communicating, even if the din is enormous.

EF: Thanks Kayleigh and keep up the great form at number 3.

KC: Thanks Eamonn.

KAYLEIGH CRONIN - Kerry

QUILL: Síofra is inspiring us off the field

Kerry’s joint manager Declan Quill has admitted that planning for Sunday’s All-Ireland final hasn’t been easy following the season-ending injury sustained by Síofra O’Shea, but he says the team captain is still playing her part off the pitch.

The young Southern Gaels forward tore her ACL the weekend before the semi-final victory over Mayo, a match which Kerry won in impressive fashion.

“When we first got the news confirming that she damaged the cruciate, our first thoughts were for Síofra herself,” Quill told this journalist at the team’s meet and greet at the Fitzgerald Stadium. “It’s a huge personal blow and she was playing so well.

“Her main pre-occupation was around the team, which is typical of this great sportswoman.

“As managers we had to deal with it and in fairness to the girls, they responded so well, knowing they have to lift their own games all the more to win.

“As for Síofra, she won’t be able to play but she’s playing an amazing game off the field. She’s still the inspiring captain, willing on the team and that is what it’s all about.

“There is some compensation in that it happened some time ago and we had to prepare for an All-Ireland semi-final against Mayo without her. The team worked extra hard to win it for Síofra and look at the way they dominated that first half yet had plenty in the tank for the second half Mayo comeback.

“They are a great bunch of ladies and they will give it everything on Sunday next.”

McMahon the star as Kerry clinch U18 title

The disappointment of losing the All-Ireland title to Dublin is still very raw but there has been consolation for other wearers of the green and gold. Kerry LGFA won the All-Ireland U18 B championship at windy Nenagh on Saturday last after beating Sligo by 2-6 to 1-6.

It was indeed a proud moment for captain Róisín Rahilly to raise the cup. It was also special for Leah McMahon, the young Killarney lady who was awarded Laoch an hImeartha for an outstanding display at number 11. Leah scored just

one point but was rewarded for the excellence of her playmaking skills. She was the one that made it all happen for Kerry, especially in the first half when Kerry took the initiative. She created the goals finished by Amy Curtin in the 9th minute and Julia Curtin in the 14th minute.

Kerry were in in command by half-time, 2-2 to 0-3. Sligo did stage a comeback and were just a point adrift with 14 minutes left to play. Kerry responded in style and tagged on the winning scores. Hopefully, that will be a good omen for the Kerry senior ladies in Croke Park on Sunday.

SUPPORT

Councillor Marie Moloney was also present at the team’s meet and greet, wearing a green and gold outfit to show her support.

“I am very impressed with the girls,” she said. “They are a good team: in fact they are a great team and they have shown that already. I do believe that they are good enough to bring home the Cup. I’d say they’ll win by three points. It would make up for the disappointment of the Kerry supporters when Dublin won the Sam Maguire. But sure, look the Kerry players did their best and you can’t ask for any more from anyone. They will prepare for the big test again next year. “In the meantime, the ladies will do us proud.”

The last word goes to a very special Cork woman, Joanne O’Riordan, a member of the Legion club executive who also attended the open day.

“I’m a Cork woman from over the border, but I still support Kerry all the way. I was at the men’s final and once David Clifford was not firing to his usual standards the pressure was on the other forwards. We will have to leave it to the Kerry women next Sunday. Dublin are a very slick team and very physical.

“I work with a Cork woman in our office, and she says that the sheer physicality of Dublin makes them a huge challenge for any team including Kerry who did so well all year. The loss of captain Síofra is a huge challenge, but these Kerry ladies are up for that challenge, and they have my backing to face up to it on Sunday.”

There will be a big following from Kerry and fans from Killarney can join the Kerry Supporters bus at Daly’s Park Rd at 9am on Sunday morning.

The club football season kicks off in a major way this weekend with a full set of fixtures in all four grades of the Kerry Club Championships.

The senior competition is set to be fiercely contested with no real standout team – at least not yet.

Defending champions Kerins O’Rahillys, who defeated Templenoe by a single point in last year’s final, have been drawn in a perilous-looking Group 2 alongside Rathmore, Dingle and Dr Crokes. Rahillys face Rathmore in their championship opener on Saturday at 5pm in the Fitzgerald Stadium. The match will be streamed live on Clubber TV, the first major fixture to be shown as part of Kerry GAA’s groundbreaking 60-game-per-season deal with the online streaming platform. Dingle play Crokes in Austin Stack Park at 7pm. Both Group 1 games will be staged on Sunday with Kenmare playing Na Gaeil at 1.30pm in the Fitzgerald Stadium and Templenoe taking on Spa at 2pm in Kenmare. Kenmare v Na Gaeil will also be streamed by Clubber.

After all three teams in a given pool have played one another, first and second will progress to the semi-finals, while the bottom teams earn an unwanted spot in

the relegation playoff.

INTERMEDIATE

The intermediate grade promises to be as keenly contested as ever, particularly with 2021 county champions Austin Stacks on the scene.

Stacks are in Group D alongside Ballydonoghue, Castleisland and Tralee rivals John Mitchels. They’re up against Ballydonoghue in Round 1 (Saturday 7pm, Listowel), as Mitchels square up to Desmonds in Ballymac (Saturday 7pm).

Two East Kerry clubs who are very keen on getting promoted back to senior –Legion and Kilcummin – are in Group C alongside Laune Rangers and Currow. Kilcummin are already up and running following last Saturday’s convincing nine-point victory over Rangers in Beaufort (2-14 to 1-8). Legion will be aiming to join them on two points when they play Currow in Farranfore on Sunday at 2pm.

Three teams from Mid Kerry have been pooled together in Group A: Beaufort, Glenbeigh-Glencar and Milltown/Castlemaine. They’re joined by Gneeveguilla, who take on Milltown/Castlemaine on Matchday 1 in Spa on Saturday (7pm). Beaufort and Glenbeigh-Glencar will meet in Killorglin on Sunday at 2pm. There will be plenty of interest in Group

B as the Clifford-inspired Fossa get their first taste of intermediate football following last year’s triumph at junior premier level. They play An Ghaeltacht at 5pm on Saturday at Austin Stack Park. This will form part of a double header with Crokes v Dingle, and like the senior match it will also be streamed. The other game in this pool sees St Mary’s

face Glenflesk in Glenbeigh. That match takes place on Saturday at 7pm. The pick of the Junior Premier matches is in Group C as last year’s beaten finalists, Listry, take on Churchill on Saturday at 7pm in Currow. Fellow East Kerry club Firies are also in action at the same time. They play Ardfert in Strand Road in Group A.

Club Championships get up and running Cobh snatch points from Kerry FC

It was another cruel evening for League of Ireland newcomers Kerry FC as they gave up a two-goal lead at home to Cobh Ramblers on Monday.

The Tralee-based club are still searching for their first league win at Mounthawk Park and a brace by free-scoring striker Ryan Kelliher looked to be sending them to a famous win.

After losing 3-0 away to Waterford on the Friday, three points and a clean sheet would have done wonders for the players’ confidence but sadly Ramblers staged a late fightback to snatch a share of the spoils.

Substitute Mikie Rowe pulled one back for the visitors and they equalised in the

80th minute via Jack Doherty. The match ended at 2-2 as the Kingdom’s search for that elusive home win continues.

Next up is an away trip to Ferrycarrig Park to face Wexford tonight (Friday) with that exciting FAI Cup match against Drogheda United of the Premier Division scheduled for the following Friday (August 18).

KERRY TEAM v COBH: Lee Axworthy, Jonathan Hannafin, Ethan Kos, Rob Vasiu, Kevin Williams, Cian Barret, Ronan Teahan, Seán O’Connell, Leo Gaxha, Seán McGrath, Ryan Kelliher. INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Farranfore is the venue this Sunday, August 13th, for the opening game in the Intermediate Club Championship. Currow provide the opposition for the 2pm throw-in with the second round pencilled in August 20th. Kilcummin defeated Laune Rangers in Beaufort this past weekend so the winner of our game will face the Killorglin side in Round 2 with the loser facing Kilcummin.

LADIES UPDATE: The first of the County League semi-finals for our two under 14 teams took place this evening. The

Division 3 team made the short trip out the road to take on Fossa on a lovely evening for a game of football. A close game ensued with the result in the balance right up to the final whistle. The home side got into their groove earlier and were on top in the opening 10 minutes. The two teams exchanged scores throughout the opening period in a very open and free flowing contest and just one point separated the sides at the break. The second half mirrored the first and the two evenly matched teams continued to trade scores throughout. Both sides were strong defensively and each score was hard earned. With 5 minutes remaining the sides were deadlocked, but we dug deep to fashion two late scores to edge ahead at the final whistle. Well played to all the girls and thanks to Fossa for a sporting game and to the referee who officiated on the night. The team advances to a final against Kilcummin which will be played in the coming weeks. Final score...Fossa 3-05, Killarney Legion 3-07. Well done to our U16 Ladies who qualified for the County League Final, Division 3, after winning their semifinal with a convincing performance against Beaufort in Direen last Wednesday. Playing with a strong wind in the first half it took them a while to settle with Beaufort taking control of the game early on and kicking early points. As the half wore on though, our Girls found their form and scored a crucial well taken goal just before half time to lead at the break by 1-07 to 0-03. Having been urged for a big effort in the second half they did not disappoint and despite playing against the wind they put in a sterling defensive performance before eventually running out winners on a scoreline of 3-16 to 0-04. Thanks to Beaufort for a sporting game and to referee Sean Courtney. The final has been fixed for Wednesday Aug 16th with the venue and opposition to be confirmed.

INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Well done to our senior team who beat Laune Rangers on Saturday last in Beaufort in Rd 1 of the Intermediate Championship. First half goals from Man of the Match Kieran Murphy and the excellent Donal Maher helped us to a six-point lead but Rangers battled back to level matters. However Cian Foley and Paul O’Shea pointed to leave two points between the sides at half time. The second half was one way traffic but not before a top class save from Brendan Kealy to keep our opponents out. Mark O’Shea and Eoghan O’Donovan helped themselves to three points apiece as our defence excelled in keeping Rangers to a single point in that period. Our next outing is away to Currow in Rd 2.

We wish our U16’s well firstly in going to Larkspur Park in Cashel on Friday for the Munster U16 Strokeplay & Inter-County event. Then Saturday sees the National Adult Strokeplay Championships in both Riverdale in Nenagh and Lakeside in Templemore. Damien Fleming and John McGrath are taking part in the Senior event, James Fleming and Erin Moloney will be in the Intermediate event while Mark O’Shea takes part in the Junior A Men’s event. Our best wishes to all five players.

Muckross Rowing Club

CASTLETOWNBERE REGATTA: On Sunday last, Muckross was represented by four crews in the Castletownbere Regatta. The club returned home with three sets of gold medals and was unlucky to miss out on a fourth! Our Men’s J18 Quad crew of Senan Kennedy, Matthew Hegarty, Harry Bolger, Rory Clancy and John Beazley (cox) were first to the podium for Muckross ahead of Kilmacsimon in second. The Women’s Junior 14 quad crew of Roisin Beazley, Kirsten Kenny,

Hannah Kelliher, Ciara Lawlor and cox John Beazley were winners in a field of six crews. Jack Murphy and Max Coyne rowed a great time to lead the field in the Men’s Junior 16 Double but were among three crews to incur a timing penalty, which resulted in a third-place finish. Our Men’s Open Quad crew of Ethan O’Neill, Patrick Buckley, Brendan O’Neill, Jeremy Kenny and John Beazley (cox) completed the trio of wins for the club ahead of Castletownshend. Special thanks to John Beazley who towed the club boat trailer as well as coxing our three winning crews.

BANTRY REGATTA: This Saturday, the offshore competition continues with the Bantry Coastal Regatta including the Irish Junior Coastal Championships. Best of luck to our 19 crews competing!

CLUB BBQ: This Saturday, August 12, the club’s fundraiser barbeque returns and will take place from 6pm at the Muckross Park Hotel. Adults €20. U18 €15. Family (2x adults, 2x U18) €60. Great food and atmosphere guaranteed. All welcome.
