“Incompetent” Minister Ryan delaying N22 road project Transport Minister Eamon Ryan is refusing to engage with local councillors in relation to the proposed new road between Killarney and Farranfore. The revealing of the preferred route corridor for the construction of the new Killarney to Farranfore road has been delayed – again. Four potential routes for the N22 Farranfore-Killarney project were identified and were put out to public consultation in May 2021.

It was previously promised that the preferred route would be published late in 2022. This dragged on and on and by November last year, local councillors were growing increasingly frustrated at the lack of progress, They wrote to the minister seeking an

Antisocial behaviour at asylum seeker hotel There have been several reports of anti-social behaviour at the hotel housing asylum seekers on the Muckross Road. Late last year 70 males we re-homed at the Harmony Inn despite concerns from local residents. Gardai were called to the premises several times this week. Social media videos show fights in the former hotel. “It’s very clear Gardai are spending considerable amounts of valuable policing

time at a new direct provision centre. I want to express my views clearly anyone in direct provision should be deported with immediate effect should they be involved in any antisocial behaviour,” Cllr Martin told the Killarney Advertiser. “I was in the neighbourhood Saturday with residents where they experienced a bloodied fight in broad daylight, a seven-year-old also experienced this in a neighbourhood where children should be able to go out playing at that hour.”

urgent meeting with him but it was revealed this week that he has not yet replied to the November letter. “To date no response has been received from the Minister's Office,” a council official told this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting. The matter was raised by both Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan and Cllr John O’Donoghue. “The problem here is not at Council level, it is at Governmental level where either a gross incompetence, or gross

negligence on behalf of the Minister for Transport, has resulted in the current impasse whereby Kerry County Council must carry out feasibility studies in order to select the route, and the Minister for Transport appears to be obstructing them accessing the necessary funding to carry out these studies,” O’Donoghue told the meeting. “He now absolutely must allow the route selection studies to progress as a matter of extreme urgency. I will continue to fight for this impasse to be resolved for as long as is necessary as the current situation is unfair, untenable and unsustainable. I propose we write to the Minister, not asking, but demanding funding so we can take action on the issue. The ball is firmly in Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan’s court and we can’t play until he hits it back to us.”

World rally event will showcase ‘world class’ Kerry Confirmation that Tralee has been given the green light to host a stage of the World Rally Championship, pending government funding and approval of a calendar slot by the promoter, has been described as a fantastic boost for the county by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. Munster Technological University in Tralee will play a central role if, as expected, Motorsport Ireland’s bid to stage the WRC proceeds with Kerry confirmed as one of three chosen locations, along with Limerick and Waterford. The proposal is that they would alternate as host locations for Rally Ireland between 2025 and 2027 under the terms of the proposed combined three-year deal. The funding decision is currently under consideration by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.

Killarney Chamber noted that the event, said to be worth over €300 million in the three-year period, is watched by a global television audience of close on 250 million people and the promotional opportunities for the entire county of Kerry would be immense. In addition, it would attract thousands of people to Kerry, including crews, their back-up teams, families and rally supporters from all over the world. The MTU North Campus, which incorporates the Kerry Sports Academy, has been identified as one of the preferred locations that meets the very strict

WRC criteria. Hugely impressed Motorsport Ireland officials described the state-of-the-art Tralee venue as “world class”. The announcement was expected to be the selection of one location to host the WRC and the decision to rotate three venues came as a big surprise. Killarney Chamber congratulated everybody involved in the successful Tralee bid and said their determination and powers of persuasion are a great advantage to the county. “This is possibly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to promote Kerry to a very loyal audience who love the sport

Multi-storey car park mooted for New Street The car park on New Street could become a multi-storey if plans discussed at this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting come to fruition. Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O'Callaghan put forward

the idea in the Town Hall on Wednesday. He asked if “the Council prioritises in whatever financial way that works, the provision of a multi-storey car park in the bottom section of the New Street Car Park.” A council official, in reply, said, the council would look into the idea.

The official said: “The Council are currently examining the car parks within Killarney town and assessing their suitability for a multi storey car park. This assessment will be considered in the context of the overall car parking strategy for parking provision in the town.”

and relish the spectacular terrain over which the drivers compete”. “The event will showcase Kerry in the best light and, now that this crucial hurdle has been cleared, all our fingers are crossed that it will be ratified and funded,” said a statement issued by Chamber joint presidents Pádraig Treacy and Johnny McGuire. It is anticipated that some of the stages incorporated in the rally would include iconic Kerry rally locations such as Moll’s Gap, Caragh Lake and Ballaghbeama and that would really help put the beauty of the county on the world map, the Chamber added.

Soccer club remembers a wonderful stalwart A man who dedicated much of his life – both professional and personal – to promoting the game of soccer in Kerry has been remembered in an appropriate way by the club he loved. Pádraig Harnett, who passed away in October 2022, after a short illness, was a major driving force behind the promotion of the game at an underage level and, with that in mind, his friends and former colleagues in Killarney Celtic FC organised a memorial blitz in his honour.

Teams made up of under 11, under 12 and under 13 players competed for the Pádraig Harnett Cup and all proceeds raised on the day went to the Ballydribbeen Community Playground fund. There was a fantastic turnout for the blitz and the atmosphere on the day

was wonderful as the young players showcased their skills and enthusiasm in a manner that would have greatly impressed the late Pádraig. The silverware, sponsored by Tom Tobin of Killarney Medals and Trophies, was presented to the winning team by Pádraig’s wife, Maura Harnett, and his brother Brendan. Killarney Celtic Chairman, Tim Jones, said: “We were delighted to host a competition to commemorate the memory

of an outstanding clubman who gave so much to the club and Kerry soccer”. He said Celtic members were also thrilled to be in a position to support the fundraising efforts of the Ballydribeen Community Playground fundraising initiative. “The new playground, which will form part of the new Derreen Sports Complex development, is of pivotal importance to the local community,” Tim added. The late Pádraig Harnett, who was from Killarney but lived in recent years in Currans, was involved in soccer at all levels in Kerry, from running the schoolboy and girls’ leagues to representing the county on the FAI General Assembly. He was also very involved in local basketball, motorsport and cycling, reporting on those sports for the print and broadcast media.

Pictured at the presentation of proceeds from the memorial blitz were, from left, Killarney Celtic Vice Chairman Paul Sherry, Treasurer John Somers, Chairman Tim Jones, Ballydribeen Community Playground Group Treasurer Nicole Roeder, Killarney Celtic Director of Football Mike Lyne and Community Playground Group officials Emilija Gedrimrite and Anthony Kelly. “Loving mother” Mary Walsh laid to rest

The Faha woman who died in a road traffic accident on Thursday last has been described as a loving woman.

Mary Walsh lost her life in a crash near Glenflesk late last week. At her funeral Mass in Listry on Tuesday, her only son Jack said: “You were a loving, kind and selfless mother, who devoted your life to me and gave me the best childhood anyone could ask for.” The late Mary was well known in the local hospitality sector. She worked for many years in the Castleross Hotel and in more recent years worked as a child minder. She is very sadly missed by her loving family, husband Seán, son Jack, her sister Helen, brothers James, Dan and Edward, and parents-in-law Pat and Betty Walsh. Local Gardai continue to investigate the cause of the collision that claimed Mary’s life. They are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N22 in the Glenflesk area between 3:00pm and 4:15pm that

Killarney’s impressive improvement in litter league afternoon are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí. The collision involved a car and a truck. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Killarney Garda station on 064 667 1160, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Whitebridge residents want traffic noise reduction Local Independent Cllr. Martin Grady raised a motion at the recent Killarney Municipal District meeting that Kerry County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland would provide funding and erect sound barriers at the Pike Hill. The N22 Cork road near Whitebridge

Manor accommodates high volumes of traffic on a daily basis all year round. "These properties are within 10 metres of the road, the residents of Whitebridge Manor deserve better than this. “There’s sound barriers at either end of the Killarney By Pass. What’s good for the Goose is good for the Gander.” he told the meeting.

Killarney’s impressive leap from 28th position in the Irish Business Against Litter league table this time last year to 14th place at the start of 2024 has been lauded by the town’s Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. The business organisation said it was a “fantastic achievement” in a short space of time and that great credit is due to Killarney Municipal District Council, its outdoor staff and the elected members for being the guiding hand in the push for great improvements. “The coucil has turned the ship around and ensured Killarney is heading in the right direction and it augurs well for our ambition to become Ireland’s tidiest town once again,” Chamber joint presidents Johnny McGuire and Pádraig Treacy said in a statement. There was a real air of disappointment this time last year when Killarney fin-

ished in 28th position in the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) league table. The town had climbed to 20th position by mid-summer and now it is in 14th place and edging towards the top ten once again. The Chamber said in addition to the work of the municipal district council, great strides have been made by the tidy towns committee and the reintroduction of the Killarney Looking Good Competition has given the town a real boost. “It was really encouraging also to see the IBAL adjudicators praising the Killarney coffee cup initiative through which Killarney is setting a nationwide example,” the Chamber stated. For the second year running, the IBAL adjudicators were critical of the commercial bin storage area in the Glebe car park and that problem, once again, has cost Killarney a much higher ranking in the league table.

The Breen/Carmody family organised pre-Christmas dance to raise funds for Kerry Hospice/Palliative Care in appreciation of the wonderful care received during their illnesses. The event raised a total of €25,320. Pictured are Pat Dolan, Chairman of Killarney Branch of Hospice with the family.

Kevin and Patricia Ennis As a brand new year commences, I found myself detoxing with a fruit-filled remedy at Sheahan's on Muckross Road.

I recalled the desperation I found myself in one Christmas day, as a family member was banished with COVID-19. From a household that was due to travel to Tipperary just in time for the festivities on Christmas Day, the cupboards were bare in Pinewood. Crying poor mouth, like a scene from Oliver, I arrived at Sheahan's without a pre-order. I was lucky enough to score Turkey and Ham for one, which I passed through a window to thankful but sad eyes. I thought how grateful I was to the staff who worked on Christmas Day. Christmas is a wonderful time, but for some alone at Christmas, this service was a God send. Killarney prides itself on its hospitality excellence globally which filters throughout, which includes customer service within our community. Known well for their friendly, chatty nature at Sheahan's, it may come as a surprise, like many of our long-term service employees, Kevin and Patricia Ennis blew in, blew out and blew back in again to Killarney, from further afield. Having worked together for the entire Christmas period at Sheahan's, I was prompted by a cute love story. Did you even know they were a couple? Spirits are high at Christmas but so are stress levels. How did that go for you both? “We embraced the mayhem,” Kevin replied “And got on with it. When you're busy you take no notice.’ “It's easy to work for Christmas when there's no one left at home. I enjoy the atmosphere.” Patricia continued. “The customers are great and I especially love the chats with the children. They're full of

Kevin and Patricia Ennis. Photo: Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan

excitement and the parents look on wondering what will they say next.” Let's rewind back and tell me how you both met. In sync, they replied “Killarney” followed by laughter. “It was 1991, my brother and I were visiting from Newbridge and camping in Fossa. Patricia was at the same site camping with the Red Cross from Drogheda. Before we left we exchanged postal addresses and wrote to each other regularly for about a year before meeting again in Killarney for our first date in Revelles. Our first dance was to Bryan Adams 'Everything I Do' which was No.1 for 16 consecutive weeks.” Kevin explained. “Soon after that, the correspondence gained momentum and our letter writing was upscaled to scheduled phone box calls.” Patricia continued. “There were no mobile phones back then, you were

lucky to have a landline so Kevin and I exchanged numbers of our local phone boxes and scheduled the times for our chats in all weathers. I soon made the move to Kildare and we were married in Newbridge in 1994. We spent a few years in Newbridge and travelled the world together but the draw to return to Killarney was always in my heart.” Patricia smiled. So how long are you both living in Killarney? “There is nowhere like Killarney and Raheen is our home now,” Patricia replied. “We began a new year, a new millennium in Killarney in the year 2000.” “I took a position in Homebase,” Kevin explained “And stayed there for many years before starting here in Sheahan's in 2016. Patrica was in Tesco and Daly's prior to taking the plunge to be my work wife in 2018.” Kevin laughed. “

We generally work the evening shifts together and take the same days off each week”. So what's the secret? “There's no secret really” Kevin laughed. “The customers are great and our employers are too. We like the simple things in life Marie. Our weekly trip to Inch Beach, Patricia enjoys her swimming at the Towers Hotel and I like to jog”. “Apart from cutting the grass at home in the summertime, which takes at least two hours, the routine rarely varies from that.” Patricia laughed. As I left Kevin and Patricia were beginning another of their late shifts. I thanked them for their time and for working over Christmas. “It's easy to be nice to nice customers” Kevin said. “You get back 100 times over what you give,” Patricia concluded.

30th Birthday for Montessori House of Children The Killarney pre-school proudly announced its 30th anniversary last week, commemorating three decades of providing authentic Montessori Education to hundreds of children from Killarney and beyond. Carol Dempsey, the founder and owner, has a passion for nurturing young minds. She has dedicated herself to the Montessori philosophy, encapsulated by one of Dr. Montessori’s mantras, "follow the child but follow them as their leader." The Montessori method of education, a cornerstone of the schools’ success, coupled with an unwavering dedication, has created a space where Killarney children have thrived emotionally, socially and academically for three decades. Established in 1993 by Carol Dempsey, and with Dr. Maria Montessori as her core compass, the school starting with just 4 students in her then home on Countess Road. Over the years the school has organically grown and is now located in “The Old Schoolhouse” which is located behind the Pastoral Centre on Rock Road. Carol and her team have also recently created a new “Old schoolhouse” in the old primary school in Milltown, which too is growing organically.

For Carol, each Schoolhouse represents not only a physical space for learning but also a canvas for creating a nurturing environment and the feeling of a home away from home for these little ones, with everything in their carefully designed environment at the children's level saying “do touch”. Her commitment to maintaining the old Schoolhouse aesthetic is rooted in a deep appreciation for the character and history embedded in the structures of these old educational facilities. As Montessori House of Children celebrates its 30th anniversary, the school welcomes back a familiar face to the fold. Roisin Buckley, Carol's daughter, has returned to contribute her Montessori expertise and passion to the school. Roisin's commitment to the Montessori principles, combined with her fresh perspective, will bring a new energy to the school, ensuring its legacy continues for years to come. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this

week Carol was overcome with gratitude "I couldn't have imagine at the start that the school would be where it is today. I know that what we have achieved is largely through the help and support of my husband Seán and each and every one of my wonderful team members, especially Susan Hayes who has been by my

side for 27 of these 30 years - In fact since I was pregnant with my daughter Róisín, who has now come back to join our team, completing the circle" As the school looks towards the future, it does so with gratitude for the past and a commitment to providing an education that truly lasts a lifetime.

Muckross Road is no longer a pain in the ….! Road resurfacing between Abbey Cross outbound towards Torc Waterfall are nearly complete and will be welcomed by local cyclists. Local councillor John O’Donoghue said: “The new resurfacing work has resulted in a road surface much more befitting the volume of traffic it carries into the town. “I know it was a particular source of

angst for bus tours operators and they will be in for a treat when they return during the tourist season. I'm equally sure all the hardy souls returning after completing the annual Ring of Kerry Cycle will be delighted with the lovely new smooth road surface which awaits them on their return towards the town. The part of their anatomy in contact with the bicycle saddle will be particularly relieved.”

The Gleneagle Hotel is the only hotel to feature among this year’s finalists. “These nominations are a testament to the work we all do across the hotel to attract, engage, develop and retain people,” said Eilis Loughrey, Director of People and Culture for The Gleneagle Group. “It is very much a team effort but we must

give particular credit to Sylwia Godzik our Recruitment Manager who is a finalist in the Rising Star of the People Profession category. We wish her the very best of luck.” The HR team’s next step is to make a presentation in each of the three categories to the CPID judging panel. Lack of chefs forces closure of popular restaurant A popular College St restaurant is to cease trading as it cannot get staff. Garret’s Restaurant announced this week that it will close its doors for good on January 27. Owner Gearóid MacGearailt said he cannot get qualified staff, particularly chefs, to help him run the business. “I find myself in the position that I cannot proceed into the year ahead while

alone in the kitchen so I have made the very difficult decision to close the restaurant,” he said. The restaurant operated for four years. “A huge thank you to my wonderful staff who have been both loyal and hardworking. I could not have asked for better,” he said. Garret’s will remain in operation from Thursday to Sunday each week until January 27 when it closes its doors for the final time.

POLITICAL VIEW Ireland needs to tackle misinformation networks Seán Kelly, the Killarney-based MEP for Ireland South, has stressed the critical need to address the potential harm caused by misinformation networks, particularly in light of a number of arson attacks on accommodation earmarked or thought to be earmarked for asylum seekers. Kelly voiced his concern about the escalating threats of violence, stating, "Since the pandemic, we have seen a dramatic increase in misinformation, which has not been sufficiently addressed by social media platforms. Misinformation has fuelled misguided anger, which has turned to violence and destruction of property on several occasions. This threat needs to be taken seriously by the Gardaí. Although investigations have been launched, it’s important that those responsible are held to account. Otherwise, there is a risk of further instances.” “The recent arson attacks on potential accommodation buildings are not what Ireland stands for. These are ridiculous acts of vandalism and arson that damage public or private property and just wastes more Irish tax payer’s money. These thugs are simply criminals and should face the justice system” MEP Kelly said. Kelly also raised concerns about the spread of misinformation and consequence to Irish democratic processes, especially as we approach local and European elections. “It is imperative

Kelleher was speaking after the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL) voted to enter into inter-institutional negotiations on the directive on the European Disability Card and the European Parking Card for people with disabilities. “This is about ensuring equal treatment for people with disabilities and in supporting their freedom of movement and personal autonomy across 27 Member States of the Union “Fundamentally, it aims to guarantee

that we address manipulative practices, fake accounts, and hacking. Anything that could undermine the citizens' right to make informed decisions. There are many actors, both internal and external, who have no regard for what is in the Irish people’s best interest. We know how impactful the likes of social media can be, so it really has to be taken seriously", said Kelly. Kelly was happy to see the investigation into X, formerly known as Twitter, by the European Commission. “This investigation underscores the need for accountability. It is crucial that social media platforms adhere to their obligations to counter illegal content and disinformation, ensuring transparency and preventing the deceptive design of user interfaces" Kelly said.

Improving movement in the EU for people with disabilities Fianna Fáil MEP Billy Kelleher has said that he is hopeful that making free movement of people finally a reality for people with disability in the EU is a step closer after a vote today at a European Parliament Committee.

that people with disabilities can access the same special conditions or preferential treatment for services, public transport and other facilities as their local counterparts, when visiting another Member State. "This long-awaited piece of legislation will not only simplify travel but also transform the commitment to free movement for all Europeans, outlined in the EU treaties, into a tangible reality. It is high time to ensure that everyone, including individuals with disabilities, can move freely within the EU. “I am hopeful that agreement will be reached between the European Parliament and European Council within the next number of months, and that this proposal will become law in 2025,” concluded Kelleher.

The directive allows for the placement of emergency department patients into wards, often into spaces that will not be appropriate for their needs. Teachta Daly said: “The placement of emergency department patients into wards has been recommended and staff are concerned about this directive. Without adequate diagnosis and triage, they say it creates risks for both themselves and patients. “In many instances, patients may be given beds or trolleys in spaces that are not adequate for their needs. These areas are not serviced and lack oxygen ports as well as other important features. “This directive is an inevitable consequence of a lack of government planning for the challenges of this winter, and Sinn Féin in government would

implement a proper winter plan. The necessary supports in GP and primary care to see more patients in the community need to be introduced. “Without sufficient step-down and rehabilitation capacity outside of hospital, such as in nursing homes, it is impossible to shorten length-ofstay and expedite discharges. “I understand staff consider this directive to be an industrial relations matter. The matter must be addressed urgently, before an avoidable tragedy occurs” Healy-Rae echoed Daly’s concerns. He said: “Nurses and their union representatives are very fearful of this move and believe that it is not in the best interest of the patients and could actually put them at risk. “I believe the whole situation in A&E needs to be looked at of course but I believe that considering it is going against the wishes of the nurses is a decision that has not been thought through with the best interests of the patients in mind.”

SPOTLIGHT | By Chris Davies

Billy O’ Sullivan keeping Killarney hearts healthy

Over the coming weeks and months, I will be meeting will local charities, community groups and organisations that are having a positive impact on our community. In the first of our Community Spotlight series, I sat down with Billy O’ Sullivan, founder and chairman of HeartBeat Killarney, Kerry. Billy has a close affinity with the Killarney Advertiser, and we reckon his old shop was one of the very first local businesses to advertise with us. When I told Cormac (Killarney Advertiser Owner) I was meeting with Billy this week he had a few fond memories to share... "Billy was one of our first advertisers but also was a key distributor. My earliest memories of being in the family business was delivering the advertiser to ‘Billy D.F.s’. Billy operated a well-oiled machine where we got to see, what we now know today as ‘just in time’ delivery. Billy knew his customers well and their movements. If we wanted to reach these customers, we needed to be into Billy on time every time with the correct amount and Billy would deliver. And he did, year after year. As I look back and pinpoint people who contributed to Advertiser’s story, I can safely say that Billy D.F. has a few chapters." It was many years later in the early 2000’s when the idea to set up a voluntary cardiac support group for Killarney and indeed Kerry was brought about. Billy was recovering from a triple bypass operation and was undergoing a six-week rehabilitation program in UHK. A few months prior to the operation he had started to get pains in his wrists and went to the doctor for a check-up. His aches turned out to be one of the lesser-known symptoms of cardiac issues and he was referred to a cardiologist where the true extent of the issues was laid bare. An ECG and other tests showed several blockages which were life threatening. As Billy says himself, “I was a brewing heart attack”. During his time in hospital, he became friendly with a nurse called Kay Karim. They floated the idea of setting up a support group for locals who have heart disease or who have are at risk of having a cardiac event or stroke. Within weeks, HeartBeat was born, a testament to how much the pair cared about the issue. While registered as a charity Billy describes them as a group of “cardiac patients helping other cardiac patients”.

Front row: Eadaoin Moynihan (HSE), Kira Clarke (Event Organiser & HeartBeat), Catriona White (International Hotel), Billy O'Sullivan (HeartBeat Chairman) Back L-R: Donal McCarthy (HeartBeat Executive Committee), Lucy Clifford (HeartBeat Treasurer), Olive O’Sullivan (HeartBeatExecutive Committee).

Fast forward two decades, Billy and the group are going from strength to strength. Over that time the group have built up a network of healthcare professionals and experts that have educated both themselves and the many other service users. The group meets once per month and works hard to bring in expert speakers on a range of matters relating to medication advice, exercise, diet and stress reduction. Throughout the years Billy has seen that medication advise is a key support they offer. “When you get a bit older in life you can develop an adverse attitude towards taking medication, but when you engage with HeartBeat you can take advantage of the expert medical advice, as well as receiving first-hand experience from others in the group. The latter can be very reassuring for people”. “The issue with cardiac medication compared with other medication is that you won’t notice a physical benefit when you take them, but if you don’t take them, cardiac health issues can be exacerbated”. As mentioned above, another key support that HeartBeat offers its service users is around stress reduction. Stress is one of the most common contributory factors for Cardiac issues. When I think about getting older and heading into retirement, I think less work and more leisure time but speaking to Billy this week I learned that there are many worries later in life that can contribute to poor cardiac health. “We put a big focus on the day-to-day stressors that can impact our health. Recently we had a solicitor who talked to our group about making wills and advice around inheritance. We had an expert in

to talk about new laws around the power of attorney. While on the face of it, these issues may seem trivial, they can cause a lot of stress. If we can help alleviate some of that stress, then we know we are having a positive impact on their heart health”. After more than 20 years Billy is not ready to look back just yet, there is so much more he would like to achieve with HeartBeat. Two key areas he wants to address is making younger people (30+) more aware of their cardiac health, and also to remove the stigma around cardiac health. On bringing the younger people along Billy had a great analogy: “I liken managing our heart health to taking the car for an NCT. When we take our car for a test we check the air pressure in the tyres, we test the brakes and see how the engine is running. From the age of 30 people should begin to look at their health in this way too. A trip to the doctors for some bloods and some other routine checks can significantly reduce the risk later in life”. Stigma around heart disease is something that Billy is all too familiar with too. “Many people are afraid or embarrassed to talk about cardiac issues outside of a medical setting but through our monthly meetings we are changing that. Some people believe that they will be looked upon or treated differently by their peers if they are open about their health issues but speaking openly in a supportive environment is a great way to reduce stress”. Billy worries about men in particular, who can sometimes be more dismissive when it comes to addressing health issues. HeartBeat ran a separate male and female clinic last year after recognising that some people may be more comfortable discussing their health amongst their

own gender. 110 women showed up for the female clinic, while 32 men showed up for the male clinic. Although he admitted he would like to have seen more men he was delighted with the 32 men that did show up. “From that clinic, three men were identified as being at risk of cardiac issues which is a positive because they could then bring it to the attention of their doctor who could provide appropriate care. We ran a separate ‘pop-up’ blood pressure and pulse clinic at Dunne Stores pre-covid. One hundred and sixty-five people were tested. From that number, nine were told to mention their results the next time they visited their doctor, two were told to visit their GP within 3 days and one man was taken to a doctor and brought straight to hospital as he was at high risk. That last man was told he avoided a heart attack by days. That is the kind of situation that makes it all worthwhile”. Heartbeat has 5 trustee’s and 8-10 active executive members who drive the many different events throughout the year. The highlight of the year is their ‘RID & BID’ fundraiser which is held in October. The Killarney Outlet Centre hosts the group who collect and sell unwanted gifts to the public. The event raises much needed funds for their different activities throughout the year. Billy is very grateful for the support they get from the local community, particularly local businesses. “There are so many people involved and helping us along the way. From the wonderful nurses like Anna O’ Donoghue who gives up her free time to run clinics, to the local business such as Dunnes Stores, C.R.L Oil, Sheahan’s Centra, who donate prizes for our different fundraisers. A special mention should go also go to Siobhan Linehan of Linehan's Bar, who has done so much fantastic work to fund local defibrillators in town”. HeartBeat meets at the end of each month with their next meeting taking place on January 30 at 8pm in the Parish Centre next to the Church of the Resurrection, Park Road V93 WN32. The group are welcoming cardiologist Dr Haytham Makki, who will discuss all things relating to minding your hearth health. The group also has a Strutter Walk Group which meets at King’s Bridge (opposite St Mary’s Cathedral). The walking group is led by Kevin Murphy, a Phase 4 Cardiac Exercise Expert. The walks promise good chat, camaraderie, and a bit of craic. For more information on the January 30 talk with Dr Haytham Makki call HeartBeat on 085 177 3910. If you are interested in joining the walking group, you can call Mairead on 087 681 8473.

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

South Africa takes Israel to UN Genocide Court South Africa are taking Israel to the United Nations Genocide Court, accusing the Middle Eastern nation of perpetrating genocide against the Palestinian population in the occupied territories. The case marks a significant development in the long-standing Israel-Palestine conflict and has garnered international attention. The South African government filed the formal complaint with the UN Genocide Court on Tuesday, alleging that Israel's actions in the occupied West Bank, Gaza

Strip, and East Jerusalem constitute a systematic campaign of violence, displacement, and oppression that meets the criteria for genocide under international law. The case centres on allegations that Israel has committed acts such as mass killings, forced displacement, and cultural destruction against the Palestinian people. South Africa claims that these actions are not isolated incidents but part of a broader strategy to eliminate the Palestinian population from these territories.

South African President Thabo Mokwele addressed the nation in a televised speech, stating, "We cannot stand idly by while innocent lives are lost, families are torn apart, and entire communities are uprooted. We have a moral obligation to pursue justice for the Palestinian people, and that is why we have taken this matter to the UN Genocide Court." Israel has vehemently denied the allegations, asserting that it has been defending its citizens from security threats and has sought to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the long-standing conflict.

Public Sector pay talks break down Negotiations over public sector pay between the Government and trade unions were halted early this morning due to their failure to reach an agreement. Kevin Callinan, the lead union negotiator and general secretary of the Forsa union, expressed disappointment with the government's initial offer in this latest round of talks. He emphasised the significant gap between the two parties regarding pay.

Farrell announced as Lions head coach Farrell has this week been officially appointed as the new head coach for the British and Irish Lions.

The British and Irish Lions, often referred to as ‘the Lions’, are a composite rugby team comprising players from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The head coach of the Lions is a prestigious position, as they are tasked with assembling a group of players from rival nations and moulding them into a cohesive outfit that can put it up to some of the world's best teams. This team will embark on an international tour to Australia in 2025, playing test matches in Brisbane, Melbourne and

Sydney. Andy Farrell's appointment as head coach represents the culmination of a distinguished rugby career, both as a player and a coach. Born in Wigan, England, Farrell initially made a name for himself in rugby league before seamlessly transitioning to union. Farrell's transition to coaching saw him working with England's national team and then moving to Ireland, where he became the defense coach under Joe Schmidt. His tenure in Ireland was marked by unprecedented success, with the team achieving historic victories, including a Grand Slam in the Six Nations and a series win against the All Blacks.

Callinan clarified that the talks haven't broken down but are currently on pause, as the Government has indicated its intention to reflect on the offer presented. The Minister for Public Expenditure, Paschal Donohoe, also expressed disappointment after the intensive negotiations throughout the late night failed to yield a new deal. The talks between the Government and public sector trade unions had previously stalled in December, just days before the expiration of the most recent agreement at the end of the previous year. Donohoe stressed the government's desire to strike a balance between investing in public services and ensuring fairness and affordability in any agreement. He encouraged trade unions and associations to take some time for reflection, with the government remaining open to further discussions with public service unions and associations at an appropriate time.

Amazon and Twitch face more tech layoffs In recent months, Amazon and its subsidiary, Twitch, have found themselves navigating turbulent waters in the tech industry, resulting in a series of layoffs. The tech giants are now facing the harsh realities of evolving market dynamics and changing user preferences. Amazon, known for its diverse range of services from e-commerce to cloud computing, had been expanding its workforce at a rapid pace for years. However, there is a worldwide tech slowdown and

The last time Hyundai showcased an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) prototype at CES was in 2020, with the South Korean automaker enthusiastically discussing its potential inclusion in Uber's upcoming air taxi network. Fast forward to today, Uber's air taxi network has changed hands, the broader air taxi industry still faces challenges in achieving commercial viability, and Hyundai is introducing a new "product

concept" slated for production by 2028. Supernal, Hyundai's eVTOL division, introduces the S-A2 concept, boasting a cruising speed of 120 mph and a maximum altitude of 1,500 feet. Equipped with ample battery capacity, this eVTOL can cover distances ranging from 25 to 40 miles, similar to the routes commonly taken by helicopters for affluent business travelers flying between city centers and airports. Hyundai assures that its aircraft will operate with a noise level comparable to that of a dishwasher, underscoring their commitment to quiet and efficient transportation.

even giants like Amazon are not immune to the market shifts. Twitch, the popular live-streaming platform acquired by Amazon in 2014, has also faced its share of challenges. While it remains a dominant force in the gaming community, Twitch has seen increased competition from platforms like YouTube Gaming and Facebook Gaming. As a result, the company made the tough decision to downsize certain departments, including engineering and marketing, to stay agile and competitive in the evolving market.

Mountjoy addiction counsellor charged with drug dealing A Dublin prison drug addiction counselor, identified as Kate O'Mahony (35) residing in Castleknock, has been arrested and charged with multiple drug-related offenses following a Garda operation. Ms. O'Mahony, employed at Mountjoy Prison through a contracted addiction service under the Irish Prison Service (IPS), now confronts a total of nine charges, which include possession of drugs with the intent to sell and supply, as well as handling the proceeds of criminal ac-

tivity. Her arrest took place on Wednesday morning when Gardaí intercepted a vehicle on the North Circular Road and discovered a quantity of suspected cocaine. Subsequently, during a search at her residence, Gardaí found more suspected drugs, including cocaine, cannabis, and benzodiazepine, along with a sum of cash. Ms. O'Mahony was taken into custody for questioning and subsequently appeared before the Dublin District Court at the Criminal Courts of Justice.

The operation was carried out by personnel attached to the Kerry Divisional Drugs Unit, the Garda National Drugs

and Organised Crime Bureau and officials from Revenue. The two men (one in his teens and the other in his 20s) are currently being detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996 at a Garda Station in the Southern Region.

Coffee Morning in aid of Cliona’s Foundation On Saturday January 13th a coffee morning will take place in the Old Weir Lodge, Muckross Road from 10am until 12.30pm.

The event is being organised by Muireann O’Donoghue and Sinead Byrne, two transition students from St. Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School and is in aid of Cliona’s Foundation which is a charity that provides financial assistance to families of children with life limiting illness. St Brendan’s thank the community of Killarney Over the month of December the students, staff and parents worked tirelessly on a huge variety of charitable events. Our creative students found a multiplicity of ways to give back to the wider community here in Killarney and beyond. The primary beneficiary has been Kerry Hospice- our 5th year LCVP class coordinated an eleven school Christmas jumper day which was a tremendous success raising approximately €8000 euros. This donation was further supplemented when a group of staff and students under the leadership of Mr Declan O Donoghue swam over 60 K in aid of the Hospice raising approximately €4000. The school men’s health “Movember” fundraiser was also in support of the Hospice raising €1000. The annual 6th year carol singing at St Columbanus Nursing home and at the Market cross as well as the whole school food appeal raised approximately €2500 from Carol singing and €2500 worth of hamper food donations. The 5th and 6th year Christmas breakfast and dinner along with the 2nd and 3rd year 15K walk

raised approximately €1500 for the Red Cross appeal in Gaza. The transition year jersey day, Christmas markets and carol singing raised €1500 for the Lions club food appeal and €600 for the My Canine Companions Charity. A staff raffle and staff Christmas breakfast also raised €1000 for cancer support. Finally our parents council raffle in association with our carol service raised €1700 for our School Music Department. With our goal of developing our students to be socially aware and with a whole school approach to this time of giving, our school community raised over €23000 in support of those who need assistance thus developing an awareness. We are very grateful to the parents of our students and the wider Killarney area for their generosity of spirit always.

WHAT'S

THE BUZZ? Keoghan’s Saltburn performance is an uncomfortable must-see

In Emerald Fennell's twisted satire flick, "Saltburn," Barry Keoghan delivers a performance that's so unhinged, it'll have you laughing and cringing at the same time.

Gervais wins fourth Golden Globe with "Armageddon" In his latest Netflix stand-up special, "Armageddon," Ricky Gervais delivers a sharp and provocative look at the world around us, tackling topics from political correctness and social media to the end of humanity itself. Gervais' signature style of dry wit and observational humour is on full display here. One of the central themes of "Armageddon" is Gervais' disdain for political correctness, which he sees as a stifling force that prevents people from speaking their minds freely. He rails against the "woke brigade" and their insistence on policing language and thought, arguing that such censorship is ultimately harmful to society. Gervais also takes aim at social media, which he sees as a breeding

ground for narcissism and self-promotion. He mocks the constant need for online validation and the obsession with self-image that social media has fostered. Despite the controversial nature of his material, Gervais doesn't shy away from pushing boundaries. Although some of the jokes in the show have come under heavy criticism, ‘Armageddon’ still took a Golden Globe this week Gervias took to twitter to celebrate: “I f***ing won!” he wrote, with an image of himself holding the Golden Globe award for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television. That was the fourth of his career, defeating the likes of Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Trevor Noah, who were also nominated in the category.

Armageddon is not for everyone, however, for those who appreciate his style of comedy, it's a must-see.

As Oliver Quick (played by Barry Keoghan), a scholarship student in Oxford, finds himself thrown into the harsh world of rich kids, Keoghan portrays a young man with a mix of social awkwardness, resentment, and an uncomfortable want of acceptance. His performance is like one of those repetitive nightmares you have as a child – you know something bad is going to happen, but you can't get away from it. Oliver is a struggling student who finds himself drawn into the charmed world of Felix Catton (played by Jacob Elordi), a wealthy and enigmatic classmate. When Felix invites Oliver to spend the summer at his family's estate, Oliver eagerly accepts, hoping to escape his own origins and immerse himself in the world of luxury that Felix represents. As Oliver spends more time in Felix's world, he becomes obsessed by his personality and the allure of wealth and privilege. However, beneath the

surface of the wealth lies a dark secret that slowly unravels, revealing a family consumed by dysfunction, deceit, and a chilling obsession with power. Fennell crafts an atmosphere of suspense and unease, expertly weaving together elements a psychological thriller and social satire. If you're looking for a dark comedic satire with a star-making performance, then "Saltburn" is definitely worth checking out. Without giving away any spoilers keep an eye out for the bathtub scene, the grave and the explicit 'Murder on the Dancefloor' scene which has sent Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s 2021 chart hit back into top 10.

13-year-old becomes first human to beat original Tetris 13-year-old Willis Gibson of Oklahoma has become the first human to officially beat the original Nintendo version of Tetris. For those of you who are not aware of the iconic game, Tetris is a tile-matching puzzle video game developed by Alexey Pajitnov in 1984. It is one of the most popular and enduring video games of all time, having been ported to numerous platforms and translated into over 40 languages. The game has sold over 500 million copies and is one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. Gibson achieved the remarkable feat by reaching level 157, at which point

the game's code becomes unstable and the blocks fall so quickly that the game itself can no longer function. This "kill screen" was previously thought to be unreachable by human players, having only been achieved by AI bots. Gibson, known online as Blue Scuti, has been playing Tetris since he was a young child, and his passion for the game has only grown over time. He began practicing for this attempt in early 2023, putting in countless hours of dedicated practice to master the game's strategies. Gibson's reaction to the achievement was one of pure elation. "Oh my God! Yes! I'm going to pass out. I can't feel my hands,"

Junior rally drivers set to make their debuts next month Two of the youngest members of Killarney and District Motor Club are set to make their Junior 1000 Rally debuts at the Killarney Forestry Rally on February 18. Junior 1000 rallying is a controlled branch of the sport that allows drivers aged between 14 to 17 years to drive 1000cc rally cars in certain events. Dave Slattery Junior, son of Moriarty’s

Central Cars Sales Kingdom of Kerry Rally champion Dave Sr has acquired the ex-Mossie Costello Hyundai i10 and Frank Wharton, son of well-known local rally driver Cyril Wharton, has taken delivery of a Toyota Aygo in time for the local forestry rally. Ger Somers will co-drive for Slattery Jr. “Ger started rallying with me in 1998 now he is going sitting with the young lad,” said his father Dave Sr.

Dave Slattery Jr and Ger Somers are ready for a season of Junior 1000 Rallying.

Frank Wharton, right, took delivery of his Toyota Aygo rally car from its previous owner Tommy Moffett over the weekend.

Tiger Woods and Nike end iconic partnership This week, golf legend Tiger Woods announced the end of his longstanding partnership with Nike, a relationship that had spanned over two decades and cemented his status as one of the most influential figures in sports marketing history.

Over 27 years ago, I was fortunate to start a partnership with one of the most iconic brands in the world TIGER WOODS

| By Chris Davies Woods and Nike first joined forces in 1996, just days after the young golfer turned professional. The partnership was a gamble for Nike, as Woods was an unproven commodity at the time. But the investment paid off handsomely as Woods went on to become one of the most dominant athletes of all time, winning 15 major championships and redefining the sport of golf. During their partnership, Nike became synonymous with Woods, and Woods became a walking billboard for the brand. He appeared in countless Nike commercials, graced the cover of numerous Nike apparel and footwear releases, and helped elevate the company's golf business to new heights. The end of the partnership was not unexpected, as Woods had been using equipment from other brands, including TaylorMade clubs and Bridgestone golf balls, since Nike exited the golf equipment business in 2016. He had also begun wearing FootJoy shoes in recent years. In a statement announcing the split, Woods thanked Nike for its unwavering support and said that he looks forward to continuing his career with "other partners who will help me achieve my future goals." Nike also issued a statement expressing gratitude for Woods' contributions and wishing him well in his future endeavours. Woods is expected to continue his career with other sponsors, and he has already been linked to potential deals with brands like Puma and Under Armour. Nike, meanwhile, will need to find a new face to represent its golf apparel and footwear division. Nike, the world's leading sportswear brand, has built its empire on innovation, performance, and a strategic approach to athlete endorsements. By aligning itself with some of the most iconic and successful athletes across various sporting disciplines, Nike has effectively turned

their stars into brand ambassadors, driving sales, enhancing brand perception, and establishing a deep connection with consumers. Nike's history of athlete endorsements dates back to the late 1960s when Bill Bowerman, co-founder of Nike, partnered with Oregon track and field coach Phil Knight to create custom shoes for their athletes. This marked the beginning of Nike's commitment to performance and its recognition of the power of athlete-driven marketing. In the 1980s, Nike's partnership with Michael Jordan, the legendary basketball player, revolutionised the sneaker industry. Jordan's Air Jordan shoes became a global phenomenon, transcending their athletic purpose to become fashion icons and if you haven’t seen it yet, I recommend watching ‘Air'. The sports drama is based on the real life events of NIKE and JORDAN brand’s first debut of crafting the greatest athletic sneaker of all time. Other iconic sports star sponsorship deals from NIKE include basketball icon LeBron James who signed a lifetime deal with the company. The deal is estimated to be worth over $1 billion, and it has helped to make James one of the most marketable athletes in the world. American tennis legend Serena Williams is another success story from NIKE. As one of the most successful athletes of all time, her endorsement deal with Nike is one of the most lucrative in women's sports history, reportedly worth over $100 million

You challenged the entire institution of golf. You challenged us. And most of all, yourself. And for that challenge we're grateful NIKE

NEWS

12.01.2024

Key dates and deadlines for KNOW YOUR RIGHTS Recycling waste electrical 2024 college applications and electronic equipment Leaving Cert students are returning to a short but very busy term, with mock exams only a couple of weeks away.

What must retailers do about Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment? Retailers must take back your old electrical equipment free of charge when you buy new goods. They must also ensure you are aware of the take-back options they offer, and other ways to dispose of your old electrical and electronic equipment (for example, by providing leaflets or signs at the point of sale). They must store waste electrical products properly and transport them safely to an approved collection facility.

There are also some important dates and deadlines that students and parents/guardians need to watch out for in the coming weeks, as well as information events that will help with decision-making and applications.

CAO, HEAR AND DARE

Published By

The normal closing date for applying to CAO 2024 is February the 1st at 5pm. While late applications are accepted from March 5th to May 1st, it is strongly advised to apply before the normal closing date as some courses are restricted and students may not be able to add them in after February the 1st. Any students applying for the HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) or DARE (Disability Access Route to Education) schemes must have applied to CAO by February 1st. Applicants who apply to CAO by the 20th of February can avail of the discounted fee of €30. Applications after this date will cost €45. Changes can be made to CAO applications free of charge when the Change of Mind facility opens on May 7th and up to the final deadline of July the 1st. The CAO Virtual Information Session for students and parents/ guardians will take place on Wednesday, January the 17th from 6pm. For further details on the CAO application process and to register for the webinar see www. cao.ie . Online Information Sessions for the HEAR and the DARE take place on Saturday, January the 13th. Students applying to either or both of these access schemes are strongly urged to register for and attend the information sessions to get a clear understanding of why and how to apply. See www.accesscollege. ie for details. Students who are applying for medicine should apply to do the HPAT by January 19th on https:// hpat-ireland.acer.org/. Late applications are accepted up to February the 2nd for a late fee. As well as those mentioned here, lots of universities/colleges have CAO Information Sessions taking place in the coming weeks, so take a look at the events calendars on www.qualifax. ie and www.careersportal.ie as well as individual college websites for more details.

UCAS APPLICATIONS

Any students applying to universities in the UK including Northern Ireland need to complete their application by January 31st at 6pm. This equal consideration deadline means course providers must consider all applications received by this time equally. Universities and colleges do not have to consider applications received after the deadline, although they can if they have spaces available once the on-time applications have been considered. This does not include courses included in the early deadline of October the 15th.

OTHER PATHWAYS

There are various pathways open to students after Leaving Cert, many of which remain open for applications up to and after the Leaving Cert results. They include PLC (Post Leaving Cert) courses in college of further education (FET), traineeships, apprenticeships and supported educational programmes. The new joint tertiary degrees which allow students to start their degree in a local Education & Training Board (ETB) and finish it in university, open for 2024 applications on February 1st. For more details see www.nto.hea.ie

THIS WEEK’S ISSUE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY: Business Development Manager: Chris Davies Graphic Designer: Leszek Szeligowski, Sports Journalist: Adam Moynihan, Sean Moriarty

What equipment can I take back? Retailers must take back your old electrical and electronic equipment in store for free on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis. This means the old product must be of the same type or have the same purpose as the new item purchased. Retailers in large stores (with an electrical-goods sales area greater than 400 square metres) must accept your small appliances (less than 25 cm high) for recycling without insisting you buy anything. You can deposit certain types of waste batteries at various shops for free. What if I want something delivered to my home? If you are having something delivered to your home, you can have the old item collected at the same time for no extra cost on the same one-for-one, like-forlike basis. The retailer cannot charge for collecting the waste equipment (although they can charge a delivery fee for the new item). Retailers must give 24 hours’ notice of delivery and you must have the old item ready for collection and disconnected from all electrical, gas or water systems (as appropriate). If a retailer has not given 24 hours’ notice of delivery and an old appliance is not ready for collection, they must return to collect it within 15 days. If you do not wish to use the free collection service when your new equipment is delivered, then you can return your old item to the shop at any time. Who pays for recycling WEEE? By law, producers of electrical and electronic goods are responsible for financ-

ing the collection, treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal of WEEE. This means you can return your household WEEE free of charge, either to a shop when buying a replacement item or to another authorised collection point, such as a local authority civic amenity site. How should I dispose of batteries and contaminated waste? Batteries should be disposed of carefully and not sent to landfill because they are classed as hazardous waste. According to WEEE legislation, retailers only need to take batteries which are contained within electrical or electronic equipment. You can deposit waste batteries free of charge at: •A ny local authority civic amenity site • Any shop selling the same type of battery Retailers must take back batteries of a type they supply, even if you did not get the batteries from them. You do not have to buy anything from the shop when you are depositing waste batteries. But retailers do not have to take back batteries of a type they do not supply. For example, they do not have to take back a car battery if they only sell batteries suitable for a torch or remote control Retailers are not obliged to accept contaminated waste that would present a health and safety risk to their staff, such as leaking batteries. If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen: Killarney, Tel: 0818 07 7820 Email: Killarney@citinfo.ie

My memories of you are special They won’t fade away I think of you always Not just today.

In loving memory of Kathleen Doolan (née Hannon) Ballinamanagh, Kilcummin formerly the Bronx, New York who passed away on 11th January 2021. A great mother, nan and friend. Missed everyday. Chroí briste ach cuimhní sona. Always missed and lovingly remembered by Emmett, Ashling, Laoise and Maeve.

Donie and Julianne Fleming 79 St Brendan’s Terrace, Killarney On the 16th of January 1964 was a great day in our lives. That’s the day we became husband and wife. We reared 6 children, 3 girls and 3 boys. Our grand-children and great grand- children gave us happiness and joy. Julianne, you’re the woman that stole my heart. You are the one that always took my part. Throughout our life together, you have always been my rock. You stood by my side, whatever the shock. I loved you dearly, sometimes it’s never shown. But this poor heart to you, belongs alone. I looked forward to the future with you and me. Our life together, we spend happily. Donie, sometimes we wonder how it all began. How our lives entwined for this wonderful span. A glance, a kiss, a warm embrace. A special meeting in a chosen place. By family and friends to be loved and to love. This wonderful feeling is a gift from above. As the year of our 60th wedding anniversary we now enter. We thank God, that we have chosen this sacred joint venture. All through our lives, our love has endured. Like a fine wine, it has slowly matured. Our children so loved, and then so small. Now like trees in the forest, so strong and so tall. With tiny tears that glistened, my eyes were fixed on you, and thinking of the life we’d share we softly said “ I do”. Our Hearts were knit together from the time that we first met, and memories were gathered that we will never forget. While daily living life with you, you saw the real me, and still, you choose acceptance, a lifelong mystery. With many happy times gone by and others when we cried, some days we’d share so endlessly, while other days we’d hide. With all the ups and downs we’ve had in learning to be friends, I know that in this heart of mine, I’d marry you again. Your loving Husband Donie and Family xx

Supporters urged to get behind women’s game | By Adam Moynihan

New research sheds light on attitudes towards ladies’ football Irish people are five times more likely to attend a premier men’s sporting event than an equivalent women’s event according to new research carried out by Lidl and the Ladies Gaelic Football Association. At the launch of the LGFA’s Lidl-sponsored National Football League on Wednesday, it was also revealed that 59% of Irish people have never attended a live women’s sporting event. The governing body for the women’s game and their commercial partners are urging supporters to come out and show their support for female players throughout the league, which gets underway with Division 4 fixtures this

weekend. Reigning Division 1 champions Kerry get their season up and running with an away match against All-Ireland champions Dublin the following weekend, on Saturday, January 20. The research commissioned by Lidl and carried out by Red C in December 2023 indicates that lack of media coverage is perceived to negatively affect public awareness and support for women’s sport, with 40% stating this as a reason for non-attendance at live women’s events. Almost two thirds (65%) of people think women’s sport does not get enough media coverage in Ireland and 83% agree that men’s sport is

covered more comprehensively. Other barriers to attending female sports events included venues not being easy to get to (37%), not knowing anyone that is playing (34%) and ticket prices being too high (34%) but perceptions and unconscious bias around women’s sport in Ireland continue to be key barriers. Almost half of Irish people (46%) believe that men’s sport is generally better to watch than women’s sport. Whilst Irish people perceive women’s sports in Ireland to be high quality and skilful, they think it’s less exciting or competitive than men’s sports and over a third (38%) think that the stand-

ard of play isn’t high enough to justify attendance at live matches. “I wish to commend Lidl Ireland on another important piece of research,” LGFA President Mícheál Naughton said. “The findings are certainly revealing and it’s now incumbent on people to get behind the fight and ensure greater attendances at our fixtures in 2024. It’s an exciting year for the LGFA as we celebrate our 50th anniversary on July 18 and it promises to be another memorable campaign as our counties battle it out for Lidl National League honours before attention switches to the Championship season.” INITIATIVE: Kerry captain Síofra O'Shea, Dublin captain Carla Rowe and Meath footballer Emma Duggan at the launch of Lidl's 'Get Behind the Fight' campaign at Croke Park. Kerry matches picked for live TV The RTÉ cameras will be in Tralee on the opening night of the league as Kerry get their 2024 season up and running with a Division 1 Round 1 match against Derry. The Ulster side, now managed by Tyrone icon Mickey Harte, had Kerry on the ropes in last year’s All-Ireland semi-final before Jack O’Connor’s men fought back and finished strongly to advance to the final, which they ultimately lost to Dublin.

A bumper crowd is expected at Austin Stack Park on Saturday, January 27 but those who are unable to attend will be pleased to know that RTÉ will provide live coverage of the game, which begins at 5.30pm. Kerry’s home game against Mayo in Round 3 (February 17) will also be broadcasted live on RTÉ, with other fixtures expected to be picked up by TG4 and GAAGO.

The week before the Derry game, on Friday, January 19, The Kingdom will take part in the McGrath Cup final, more than likely against Cork - assuming the Rebels can overcome the challenge of Waterford. Kerry made light work of Tipperary and Limerick in Group A of the preseason competition, despite fielding several debutants and resting key players like the Clifford brothers, Tom O’Sullivan, Paul

Geaney and Tadhg Morley. They overcame a young Tipp side on a scoreline of 3-20 to 0-10 on January 3 and they followed that up with a 6-18 to 0-11 win over an experimental Limerick side in Rathkeale last Saturday. Seánie O’Shea (two), Conor Geaney (two), Ronan Buckley and Darragh Roche bagged the goals in that Limerick rout. Unusually, Kerry finished the game with midfielder Joe O’Connor between the posts after regular goalkeeper Shane Ryan left the pitch with a suspected shoulder injury. The injury is not thought to be serious.

Conlon to manage Kingdom Warrior Cronin Kerryman Kevin Cronin has been signed by Conlan Boxing and will become the first ever fighter to be managed by Olympian Michael Conlon. Cronin, who has an impressive professional record of 6-1-1, has experienced a difficult period of late with a number of fights being cancelled at the last minute through no fault of his own. It is hoped that teaming up with Conlon will open new doors for the super middleweight from Milltown. “We have some exciting plans for the year ahead and I look forward to [Conlon Boxing] guiding me to the top of the game,” Cronin said as he unveiled the partnership to his followers on social media. Cronin’s participation in the 2023 Irish Boxing Awards Domestic Fight of the Year (against Jamie Morrissey) is thought to have encouraged Conlon to sign the Kerry boxer to his roster.

Eamonn Fitzgerald looks ahead to what promises to be a brilliant year for local, national and international sport There’s a stretch in the evenings. It’s both noticeable and welcome considering the downpours at the end of 2023. After the winter solstice and the shortest day of the year on December 21, the days started getting longer and we got more daylight. For example, in Killarney, the length of the day on the winter solstice was 7 hours and 33 minutes. By January 1, the day had lengthened to 7 hours and 42 minutes, gaining about 9 minutes of daylight in 10 days. By February 1, the day will be 8 hours and 48 minutes, which means we will see an increase of about 66 minutes of daylight in a month. Fáilte isteach to January, which got its name from Janus the ancient Roman god of beginnings, transitions, time, and doorways The name comes from the Latin word for door (ianua), since January is the door to the future. Usually, Janus is depicted as having two faces, one looking forward and one looking backwards. So, let us look forward to the highs and lows of sport. Is sport that important? Indeed it is, reflecting life itself, the highs, and lows.

SPECIAL

x

July will be special. Two big sporting events are scheduled for July 2024. The Paris Summer Olympics are set to run from July 26 to August 11. The action will begin two days before the Opening Ceremony, with rugby and football kicking off on July 23. There will be a record 33 sports, 339 medal events and 42 venues. Already some of the Irish athletes have reached the qualifying standard to enter. One such athlete is Fionnuala McCormack. She qualified for the Paris Games by running 2:26:19 at the Valencia Marathon in December 2023, just five months after giving birth to her third child. She is the first Irishwoman to qualify for five Olympic Games, having previously competed in Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2021 (postponed from 2020 due to Covid). She ran over half a minute inside the Olympic qualifying time of 2:26:50. We also look forward to the various Irish teams’ progress in Paris such as the women’s and men’s rugby teams. And, of course, the GAA All-Ireland finals. Will this be the year when we record that elusive win, be that at club level or county level? Will some team trip up Liverpool on the run into the Premier League title and the cup? Will Kerry FC go forward, score more goals and record some home wins? They found it tough in 2023 on their maiden voyage into the senior ranks of League of Ireland soccer. They have parted ways with boss Billy Dennehy, and Gaxha has

12.01.2024 also gone, but fortunately Ryan Kelliher has signed for the new season. The Lissivigeen striker, son of Tomás (Seve), had a brilliant opening season, scoring memorable goals. More of the same Ryan in 2024 which will boost the new Kerry team. Ivan Hurley keeps me informed regularly about new signings. Their first game is away to an established Cork side in February. More about that as the schedule unfolds. Best of luck to Kerry FC. The same goes for another Kerry team who, just like their soccer counterparts, live under the shadow of the Kerry football team. The Kerry hurlers have been in action already in the Munster League, shipping the expected heavy defeats. Nevertheless, Stephen Molumphy, manager of the Kerry senior hurlers, has been busy adding over ten new members to strengthen his panel going forward. This includes local men Luke Crowley, Tom Doyle and Diarmuid Quirke. The big goal is to win the Joe McDonagh Cup, which has eluded Kerry. They lost the 2022 and 2023 finals. Stephen’s playing pedigree is excellent as a former Waterford hurler who won two Munster titles and an AllStar award.

MCGRATH CUP

The Kerry footballers have been in McGrath Cup actions since the start of January and the young hopefuls have been raring to go. As expected, there were very few of last year's first 15 starting against Tipperary and Limerick but they still ran up big scores. I am a follower of the Janus philosophy. Look back, assess honestly, learn lessons and to thine own self be true, but concentrate on the way forward. I wonder does Jack O’Connor do the same? I hope so. I fully realise that some players lose more matches than they win, and it is the players who have to perform once they leave the dressing room and bounce over the first white line. The key role of the boss, be it manager, coach, psychologist or psychiatrist, is to prepare the players to perform at their highest levels, both physically and mentally. The boss and his management team assess the team’s performance on the day and act accordingly making the changes positionally or calling some players ashore in a timely fashion. Then spring the correct subs at the right time to achieve the desired result. If the team wins the manager is applauded for the Midas touch. If they lose, he is blamed, quite often too unfairly. I am loath to be critical of management. Very sensibly Jack has strengthened the teams in the second half of the McGrath Cup, and they ran in big scores. Quite a few of the fringe players and those new to the step-up to senior Kerry ranks have grabbed the initiative and played very well. Many supporters have called for radical changes due to their suffering, especially the hardest one of all, losing an All-Ireland that should not have gone to the Dubs. It was a bitter pill to swallow, and it still sticks in the craw for so many sup-

porters and more poignantly still for the players and management. I have consistently argued that for starters, Kerry need to get one new midfielder – and the unavailability of Jack Barry facilitates that move. Kerry need one more scoring forward, with an emphasis on scoring. We have too many players forced into ‘assisting’ the current scoring forwards. Free them up to score, or if they can't deliver scores consistently then bring in natural forwards. More about that as the league progresses and we won’t have long to wait until Kerry meet Derry in the first round of the league in Tralee on the last weekend of January. There is a lot at stake for managers Jack O’Connor and Mickey Harte. The pelotons in all four provinces have got underway, just turning the pedals through the McGrath Cup and its equivalents. The racing starts at the end of this month. It is only the league, but it is so competitive and so condensed that July will come around very quickly. Here’s hoping that the build-up and preparations for the return of Sam will reap dividends.

WOMEN IN SPORT

One of the most welcome developments in Irish sport in recent years is to witness the wonderful growth in the number of girls and ladies participating in sport and the very significant roles they are playing at administrative level. Declan Quill and Darragh Long, the two Ds from rival clubs in Tralee, did a wonderful job throughout the 2023 LGFA league but they were well beaten in the All-Ireland final at Croke Park where the ultra-strong, well-prepared Dublin team were the masters. Even the indefatigable spirit of the evergreen top scorer Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh failed to halt the runaway Dublin bus. Comhgháirdeas to Louise, winner of the LGFA Footballer of the Year award, and the same goes for Fossa’s, Kerry’s and arguably Ireland’s best-

known sports star, David Clifford. He was awarded the GAA Footballer of the Year two years in a row, even though Kerry did not win the All-Ireland and the Dublin machine cranked up a big campaign to have the honour bestowed on some players who will be staying on to win an unbelievable 10 All Ireland medals. The July finale will be the last match of the intercounty season, which will begin on the weekend of April 6/7. Let us look forward to 2024 a little wiser and with lessons learned.

VAPING

All indications are that some smokers, teenagers in particular have switched from the traditional nicotine inhaling. Vaping is relatively new so the full medical facts have not been established. However, vaping (e-cigarette) is still very harmful and early studies prove it. There is some legislation in place now in Ireland to deal with vaping. Under the new rules, premises will need a license to sell vaping products. Disposable vapes could be banned in Ireland under one of the options set out in a public consultation launched recently. The Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly and the Minister for Public Health Frank Feighan have received government approval to introduce additional restrictions on the sale and advertising of nicotine-inhaling products such as e-cigarettes. To the best of my knowledge, no suppliers of vaping products are sponsoring sports teams or individuals in Ireland and thank God for that. Sport is a much loved and prized deliverer of healthy living so the Irish government and sports bodies should cut off that vaping cash flow before it even gets going in this country. Don’t ape some English soccer and rugby clubs such as St Helen’s RFC and Blackburn Rovers FC.

RORY FINNERAN

Look out for the progress of Rory Finneran, one of Ireland’s brightest young soccer stars. He was the Irish International

U15 Player of the Year in 2023 and he has all the skills and attitude to become a full senior international in due course. He is 15 years of age and he made history last weekend when he came on for Sammie Szmodics who had scored a hat-trick in Blackburn’s 5-2 FA Cup win over Cambridge United. However, no kudos for Blackburn who have ‘Totally Wicked’ a vaping company as sponsors. Yes, totally wicked and it’s ironic that Blackburn have accepted that sponsorship since 2018. As Finneran is under the legal age to vape in England (18), he couldn't wear the sponsored shirt and the teenage star was forced to wear a sponsor- less geansaí. Thus, the letter of the law was adhered to; the spirit of the law was flouted and that was unfortunate. Ireland has implemented a ban on alcohol advertising and sponsorship in sports, as part of the Public Health (Alcohol) Act, which came into effect on November 12, 2021. This means that alcohol companies cannot advertise or sponsor events where the majority of participants or competitors are children or the event is primarily aimed at children. The ban also applies to advertising of alcoholic beverages in or on a sports area during a sporting event. Ireland has also prohibited sponsorship by cigarette companies of major sporting events since 2002, under the Public Health (Tobacco) Act 2. This law forbids any form of direct or indirect advertising or promotion of tobacco products, including through sponsorship of sports, arts, or cultural events.

LISTOWEL’S BID

Best of luck to Listowel in Croke Park in the All-Ireland JFC final this weekend. Kerry clubs have dominated this competition; they have a huge advantage because of the way clubs are affiliated as junior, intermediate and senior in Kerry. Yes, Marc Ó Sé the Listowel manager should be in a good position to plan the winning strategy.

Big home game for St Paul’s Reigning cup champions the Dublin Lions are the visitors this Saturday as Utility Trust St Paul’s aim to extend their narrow lead at the top of the Southern Conference. The game tips off at 7.30pm at the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre.

Paul’s have won all but one of their ten league fixtures so far, a record which leaves them in pole position to secure a playoff berth at the end of the regular season. Finishing top of their conference would earn them a valuable home semi-final. The Lions are sure to provide a stern test, however; they recently proved

their credentials by reaching the 2023/24 cup final, which will be played next weekend at the National Basketball Arena in Dublin. Including this weekend’s match, Paul’s have four home games remaining. They will host SETU Carlow on Sunday, January 28, Moy Tolka Rovers on February 10 and the Limerick Sports Huskies on February 17. James Fleming’s side will also have two away matches in the runin, versus the Limerick Celtics and the Marble City Hawks. Lynn Jones is expected to miss the Lions game through injury with Denise Dunlea and Leah McMahon in line to see more minutes in her absence.

SQUAD: St Paul's are at home to a strong Dublin Lions team this weekend.

Kerry FC complete double loan signing Kerry FC have confirmed the loan signings of Galway United pair Daire McCarthy and Steven Healy ahead of the 2024 SSE Airtricity First Division campaign, which gets underway on February 16. Athenry native McCarthy (19) plies his trade at either centre back or centre midfield while Healy (also 19) is a right midfielder. “I’m looking forward to the year ahead as I’m hoping we can build on the great work that was done last year here in Kerry and push up the table,” McCarthy told KerryFC.com. “I’m hoping to develop myself as a player and as a person by coming down to Kerry. So far I’ve enjoyed my time down here. There’s a great bunch of lads in the team and the managers and coaches are great, they are clear about the style of play they want. “I can’t wait to see Mounthawk Park full and give the fans the results they

deserve.” Healy says he is looking forward to the opening fixture against Cork City. “We have a massive first game so hopefully we can get off to a good start,” he said. “I am just really happy to be here and can’t wait to get going.” Kerry FC head coach Conor McCarthy welcomed the double signing. “We’re delighted to have Daire and Steven for the 2024 season,” the Killarney man – who is the league’s youngest ever manager – said. “Daire is a versatile player and has some excellent qualities, he’s got a brilliant attitude and can’t wait to get going. I’m sure he will do very well for Kerry FC. “Steven is a young player who’s got a very bright future ahead of him and is thought very highly of. He has come through a brilliant academy in Galway and he will be a great addition to our squad for the season.”

SPORT NOTES

Killarney Athletic U16 PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 3-2 MEK. Back to league action after a 5-week break brought plenty of excitement to Woodlawn. We welcomed Evan Doona back from his time in league of Ireland and his experience showed today we found ourselves 2 nil down after 10 minutes play but scored a penalty soon after by mark to get us back in the game. Just before halftime we were down to 10 a really harsh sending off as there was minimal contact. Second half we were much better we deservedly equalised 10 minutes to go with a sublime free kick from mark. 5 minutes left mark had another free kick opportunity from 20 yards out and what a free kick it was 3/2 up now. MEK threw everything at us in the last few minutes hitting the crossbar, but we held out with some heroic defending. A terrific performance from the whole squad. Best for Athletic Mark O’Carroll Sean Kiely and JJ O’Donoghue. U12B: Camp 1-1 Killarney Athletic B. The U12B boys earned a hard-fought draw away from home this morning against a strong Camp side. The match was tight throughout and Athletic went in behind at half time. We started the second half well and eventually made the breakthrough 5 minutes from the end through a superbly taken goal from Darragh O’Toole. Overall, great effort from the lads and a well-deserved point.

Killarney Celtic RESULTS: Keane’s Jewellers Munster Champions Trophy Semi-Final AET Killarney Celtic 1-1 Newmarket Celtic.

Matej Vrljicak. Penalties - Killarney Celtic 3-5 Newmarket Celtic. U16 Division 1 - Killarney Celtic 5-0 Ballyhar Dynamos. Samuel Scroope 2, Jack OGrady, Luca Mosca, Ignacy Truchan. U12 Division 2 South - Iveragh United 1-1 Killarney Celtic Gold. Noah Murphy. GIRLS: Charleville Cheese U17 Girls Premier - Killarney Celtic 6-0 St Brendan’s Park FC. MEK Galaxy U12: MEK Galaxy 4 Killorglin FC 2. A great win at the dragons den for our MEK boys. Killorglin pressed hard for the opener but as our lads settled into the game Eoin Murphy pounced for the first goal after great work from the team to work it up including a pass from Oisín Bevan who then got the second himself with a another well worked goal. Killorglin struck for one back before the break and the game was well set up as a contest for the 2nd half. Our MEK side again scored first with great pressure the final touch was uncertain, but it gave our boys a two-goal lead. Killorglin again came back and made it 2v3 but as the pushed for an equaliser Fionnán Burke broke with a fantastic run and finished calmly into the bottom corner. A great performance with great attacking passes and resolute defending well done lads.

U12: MEK Galaxy U12 B 4 - Killorglin FC C 3. Another great game Killorglin. After an incredible first half for MEK playing some great football and going 3 ahead with goals from Noah Keogh and Tristan Cryan (2) their opponents had it all to do. The second half saw a rally from the home side bringing it back level with a few minutes left. MEK then pounced for the winner that their pressure deserved not clear who got the final touch but a 4v3 win for MEK in a great game was the outcome. U14 DIV 1: St Brendan’s Park B 3 MEK Galaxy 1. A good display by the lads against a strong Park side, Cade Jameson with the goal for MEK. U16 PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 3-2 MEK Galaxy (half time 1-2). Danny Murphy with both goals one from a free kick and the other from a penalty. Unlucky to lose as winner came in injury time and we struck the crossbar shortly after from a free kick. Man of the Match was Shay McCormack with a brilliant display from left back with good performances also from Danny Murphy, Jack Hallissey and Fionn Kennedy.

Killarney Legion GAA KERRY MINOR LADIES: Congratulations to Andrea Murphy, who has again been selected on the Kerry Minor Ladies squad for the season ahead. Although she made the minor squad last year, her season was cruelly cut short after sustaining a broken ankle in training. Andrea, to her credit, knuckled down straight away with her rehab, came back strong for our own minor team and senior ladies team in a strong championship campaign and forced her way back into the squad before the season finished. We wish Andrea the very best of luck this season and look forward to seeing her represent the Kerry and Legion ladies in 2024.
