The central section of the iconic O’Connor Terrace is to be covered as part of an ambitious redevelopment project that will radically alter the appearance of the Fitzgerald Stadium.

A new tier is to be added to the top of the terrace with a roof that will stretch roughly from one 20-metre line to the other, according to the drawings.

The Scoreboard End will get a new terrace and the Lewis Road End will be converted to an all-seater uncovered stand. The existing O’Sullivan Stand will also be replaced with a new stand.

Plans for the revamp were unveiled as part of the launch of Kerry GAA’s 150 Club, a fundraising scheme that offers individuals and businesses the opportunity to help with the “first step” of the process at a cost of €5,000 a head.

Membership benefits include an option to buy 2023 All-Ireland final tickets, access to tickets for all of Kerry’s championship matches for the next five years, and a season pass that grants admission to all games under the auspices of Kerry GAA in the Fitzgerald Stadium and Austin Stack Park

There are also advertising opportunities for 150 Club members, both in the Fitzgerald Stadium and online. Those who would like to express an interest in signing up are encouraged to email 150club@fitzgeraldstadium.com.

REBUILD

Apart from the artist’s rendition of what the new stadium is expected to look like, the literature accompanying the launch of the 150 Club is light on specific information about the rebuild. No updates on

Terrace to be covered as part of Park revamp

the expected overall cost of the project, potential funding from other sources, timeline for completion, or projected new capacity are included.

Kerry GAA Chairman Patrick O’Sullivan previously revealed that the redevelopment is expected to cost in the region of €72.5 million.

Judging by the online reaction to the new plans, fans appear to be split on the prospect of a complete overhaul at the famous old ground. There is acceptance across the board that some work is need-

ed – particularly in relation to the existing stand, the scoreboard end, and the toilet facilities – and some supporters are excited about getting a new, state-of-the-art facility.

However, others have voiced concerns about whether or not such a large scale redevelopment is a good idea. From a financial standpoint, neighbours Cork are still saddled with debt following the Páirc Uí Chaoimh rebuild and Kerry folk are eager to avoid a similar fate. Questions have also been raised about the capacity of the Fitzgerald Stadium. It is not yet known if

the revamp will lead to an increased capacity but it has been noted that the stadium is rarely full at its current size.

On the other hand, O’Sullivan has said that part of the reason for fixing up the venue is so that Kerry GAA can “entice Irish and international entertainment acts to this county”. Improvements are certainly needed if that vision is to become a reality.

New Dublin Airport coach service launched

Flightlink goes into operation on Monday morning and will serve Killarney, Farranfore, Abbeyfeale, Newcastle West and Adare.

Lions Campaign a ‘Spectacular’ success

Over 1,000 pairs of used eyeglasses have been donated for reuse in Africa as part of an inaugural ‘Spectacles Campaign’ involving Killarney Lions Club, national schools and local opticians.

Sixteen schools along with Kennelly’s Pharmacy and Opticians, Urban Optics, Specsavers and The Optical Suite provided collection points for donations of glasses, sunglasses and prescription reading glasses over recent weeks.

All four opticians have agreed to provide an ongoing collection point on their premises, which means members of the public can continue to donate used glasses all year round from now on.

"We are thrilled with the response to this campaign by the people of Killarney," said Denis Doolan, President of Killarney

Lions Club. "Thanks to everyone’s generosity, and to great collaboration by all local national schools and opticians, people with sight issues in Africa will now be able to get a pair of glasses that will make a big difference to their daily lives. On top of that, from now on as part of an ongoing arrangement, anyone who has a pair of unused glasses can from drop them into one of the opticians’ premises in Killarney, which is fantastic and will hopefully lead to many more glasses being donated”.

They are proposing that these buildings will be three and five storeys high.

“The local residents are understandably very concerned about this proposed development for a number of reasons including the visual impact of this development on the approach to Killarney town from the Cork side and the lack of a traffic management plan,” said local resident Louise Hurley.

Talk on new Fair Deal legislation in Killarney next Tuesday

What do you know about the Fair Deal Assisted Decision-making Capacity Act?

Kerry Stars sports hall up for council discussion

Ambitions by the Kerry Special Olympics Club to build its sports centre could take a step closer to reality on Monday.

The Kerry Stars has been pursuing its dream to build a sports centre in Derreen for a couple of years.

The club has identified a site, with support from Kerry County Council, between the existing Killarney Legion and Killarney Celtic sports grounds.

A special meeting of the elected members of the Municipal District will be held in the Town Hall on Monday.

Elected councillors and county council officials will discuss findings under the proposed sports centre’s public consul-

tation phase.

The Killarney Advertiser understands that over 80 submissions were made during the public consultation phase. The majority are understood to be in favour of the development, but concerns are set to be raised regarding traffic management in the area if the project gets planning permission.

The council’s Chief Executive has prepared a report on the consultation in line with current planning and development regulations.

Expressway increases return fares on Limerick – Killarney route

Expressway, Bus Éireann’s commercial coach service, has announced changes to its fare structure to offset the impact of rising costs on the business and incentivise online ticket purchases. These changes will come into effect from 31 July 2023.

Route 14 Limerick to Killarney via Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale will see single fares remain the same. A return fare booked in advance will increase from €21.50 to €24.00.

On-board monthly return tickets will no longer be available for purchase on these routes.

This new legislation aims to provide a fair deal for our elderly who may not be able to look after themselves. Heartbeat Killarney has invited Patrick Barrett Barrister-in-Law to explain what all this means from a legal point of view. The Act itself sets out various safeguards for those who have capacity, who fear they will lose capacity, and those who have no capacity whatsoever to govern their own affairs. For those worried about how to manage their personal affairs (such a finances, health, or living arrangements) or those of loved ones when faced with an ability to make decisions, the subject matter will be informative. This law is about rights, and taking every possible step to assist people to continue making their own decisions about their health, finances, housing, work or personal welfare. This Act is of great importance for people with frailty, dementia, an acquired brain injury or mental illness. It could however be very important to all of us at certain times in our lives. If both parents are alive, get them to dissolve any joint bank account and set up separate ones, with pension payments and any allowances going into the respective account. Any Care Package fees can be taken from the correct account, allowing the dementia patient to be means-tested more effectively.

FIVE KEY POINTS WILL BE DISCUSSED

1. If one parent is acting as carer, set up a standing order to pay a sum [exactly half of what is going into the other account] from one account into the other to cover h/hold bills so that the carer has enough money to manage their own life.

2. Ask a solicitor to arrange for TWO enduring power of attorney (EPA) certifi-

David

cates [a rough cost estimate is €500 for both ] to cover finance and health. This can only be set up while the parent “has mental capacity” so sooner is better than later. It enables one parent to make decisions on the others behalf. ** (see note at end)

3. Ask parent to set out their wishes with regard to care; will they be okay with going into a care home if needs be? Also cover funeral wishes and end of life care. Get all these answers typed up – make sure they understand it and date it and ask them to sign it. This brings clarity to their wishes while still of sound mind.

4. Talk about a PEACE PLAN = proactive enhanced advanced care. This is an anticipatory end-of-life care plan for those with dementia who no longer have capacity to make those kind of decisions for themselves. It helps care professionals deliver the care your parent wants in the last phases of life.

5. Check whether any household accounts eg broadband / utilities are in the affected person’s name and change them [this may require the householder’s signature]

The talk will take place at the Parish Hall on Park Road at 9pm on July 25.

Marie Meets

Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.

At your service for 45 years and counting...

Martina O'Leary's lifetime at the Great Southern

The Great Southern Hotel, steeped in history since it opened its doors in 1854, recently featured on Nationwide and celebrates 170 years of welcoming guests from all over the world next year, Where else would I be only visiting Martina O'Leary, who holds an impressive 45 years of service at one of Killarney's most prestigious hotels.

Let's start from the very beginning.....

"I began my post at the GSH in March 1978. It was rare to be a new staff member as the current staff returned annually. I'm originally from Cordal, Castleisland and while our accommodation was provided in the Garden Cottage, I would thumb home on my days off to help out with the hay and the turf. I saved and bought myself a new Peugeot racer bike so when the Ring of Kerry started, I needed no training" Martina laughed.

So have you been painting and decorating in the off-season for the past 45 years Martina?

"Some of the best days of my career at the GSH were the many connections we made with hotels around the world where we were referred to work during the off-season. I could write a book on the craic that was had," Martina smiled. "Myself and Kathleen Bhuiyan were joined at the hip. We still are. We worked at the Hilton in Rotterdam, the same year Johnny Logan won his first Eurovision in 1980. The following year we went to Frankfurt, Germany to the Intercontinental Hotel, but were lucky to have 3 weeks off where we went inter-railing around Germany. We went to see so many concerts but the best was Queen and the Dubliners and it was there that Kathleen met her husband, Masum (RIP) who was a pilot who came from Bangladesh. One

day we decided to travel to Bangladesh via Calcutta & Shrilanka. On arrival in Calcutta, we were lost completely. Two Irish girls, who stuck out like sore thumbs, and Kathleen with her long legs in short pants! We didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Such a poor country and no English but we were kindly guided to the bus which accommodated lots of furry friends, including hens, goats and cattle. We decided to ring the Intercontinental in Germany and they kindly accommodated us in one of their hotels free of charge before reconnecting flights, where Masum had a driver arranged for us at the other end.

The Cayman Islands at the Hyatt Hotel was another of my favourite spots to

work in. Where else could you do your job barefoot complete with a swimsuit and sarong? I couldn't drive but learned fast as the golf caddy was my friend in getting from A to B. I'll always remember Mary Mac saying 'Martina it has forward and reverse, what's not to understand'?"

Martina recalled with laughter. "While we were there, I was delighted to take a day trip to Jamaica where I managed a visit Bob Marley's grave!"

Do you care to share any equally entertaining stories of your years at the Great Southern Killarney Martina?

"Amongst ourselves, we have the best camaraderie and craic in the areas that are off limits to guests but I have to say,

Marie, I take great pride in my work and I would do anything for the guests" Martina replied. I could see that as Martina had huge attention to detail in setting up for 'afternoon tea' in the reading room while we chatted. "There was a lady in this week who hadn't visited for 10 years. I asked her how the twins were and she nearly died of shock"!

"A wealthy French lady stayed with us regularly and her driver was also her pilot. He took myself and Marie Murphy for a helicopter ride all around the ring of Kerry and Dingle. It was absolutely unbelievable. The next day was his day off and he asked us to go to Paris for the day. I suppose it was because we squealed that we had the misfortune of the supervisor overhearing the commotion and insisted it was too far as we had to be back to serve dinner. Ah, such great times. Imagine, a day trip to Paris!!".

Martina, you have a fantastic way with people and you never stop smiling. What is your secret?

It's easy to smile when you're happy in your life Marie. I never intended on staying at the GSH, I just never wanted to leave it and I'll be here for another while yet. It's what you make it and I have fantastic memories. As John Fitz says, 'there's the right way and there's the wrong way but there's also Martina's way' so I must be doing something right!!" Martina joked

"I met my husband Jerry O'Leary, Meentogues in 1992 and it was 'all over'" Martina laughed. "I love the busyness of the GSH but I equally enjoy going home to my family (Jerry, Daniel, Katelyn & Marilyn) and the peace of sitting out the back of the house looking out at the view and the cattle in the field. "

My sources on the 'inside' were 100% correct about Martina. I kind of knew that as I'd worked alongside her as a receptionist at the GSH for 3 years. She was adored by everyone associated with the Great Southerns - Young and old she cares about everyone in her own unique 'Martina' way'.

Congratulations Martina on 45 years of service at Killarney's own gem, The Great Southern Hotel, which is filled with many diamonds

Prom Queen: The Movement (in Concert) is a show inspired by a youth-led musical group based in Killarney, coming to four different theatres across Ireland.

It was written and co-directed by Killarney student, Sinéad Greene (15) and produced and co-directed by Rachel Griffin (18).

“Our movement aims to raise awareness around the various societal challenges faced by teenagers in a modern age society. We want to use our voices to create impact and start a movement into a better and brighter future for us young people. The themes of the show include issues such as bullying, domestic abuse and LGBTQ+ representation,” said Sinead Greene.

“The show hopes to shine light on these topics and spark conversations about the many different stories portrayed in this production. There is a witty approach to the daunting questions of modern society, with a catchy soundtrack which has many great and recognisable hits.”

The cast and crew include pupils from Killarney, as well as pupils from neigh-

Killarney youth play set for nationwide tour

bouring areas such as Rathmore, Tralee and even Cork and Kildare.

This inspiring group of young people performed the show on the INEC stage in November, with a school show the following day.

These sell-out performances established the show as a massive hit, with huge ticket sales and rave reviews.

With the funds raised from the show, the Prom Queen team donated €500 to Jigsaw Kerry, a local mental health charity for young people.

“We are delighted to bring back this show with many of its original cast, as well as a host of newcomers, and we are thrilled to share its story with a wider audience, hoping to raise even more awareness of the serious subject matters highlighted in this show,” added Sinead.

“Full of many twists and turns, Prom Queen is sure to keep you on the edge

of your seat.”

SYNOPSIS

“‘Birdhill High’, like any Highschool, has its generic yet recognisable cliques: ‘The Popular Girls’, ‘The Handsome Jocks’, ‘The Emos’ and, of course, ‘The Nerds’. Our loveable nerd in this ‘high school tale’ is shy teen Oliver (Olly), accompanied by his sarcastic yet loyal best friend Krystal (Krys). The plot follows the two as they navigate their way through high school. Oliver’s fatal flaw is being a hopeless romantic, which has led him to fall in love with the school’s popular girl, Leah. Krys, however, disapproves of this ‘popular princess’. One day, Olly stupidly challenges the school’s star athlete and popular boy Glen to see who can take Leah to the Prom. That’s where our story begins, only skimming the surface of what lies beneath. We meet many

interesting characters along the way, including Glen’s Jock Squad: Rodrick (Glen’s Loudmouth Buddy), Henry (the Principal’s son) and Cameron (Olly’s unidentical twin), as well as Leah’s Popular Clique: Debbie (The Queen of Drama) and Mollie (The Dumb Beauty).

Prom Queen deals with many sensitive topics such as depression, domestic violence, suicide, internalised homophobia and bullying. The main message of Prom Queen is that everyone has their own story. We are more than just ‘popular’, ‘jocks’ and ‘losers’, and this story has an effective and touching way of bringing this to the fore.

Muckross wins three national awards from the Heritage Council

Three sites at Muckross in Killarney celebrate on day of recognition for the museum sector.

A total of 13 museums were celebrated at a ceremony in Kilkenny Castle, having achieved official accreditation under the Heritage Council’s Museum Standards Programme for Ireland (MSPI). Established to promote professional standards in museums, selection under the MSPI is a major accolade with accredited museums considered to have attained excellence across a range of areas.

Three sites at Muckross in Killarney maintained full accreditation for the third time, making them the MSPI’s most successful participant to date in terms of consistently upholding standards over a 17-year period. Other award-winners include the Michael Davitt Museum in Mayo, as well as museums run by local authorities, national organisations, and small volunteer groups.

Factors taken into account during the assessment process include how museums care for their collections and visitors, as well as governance and management standards, and their education and exhibition programmes. Since its inception in 2006, the Irish museum sector has continued to embrace the programme with participation growing from 12 museum sites to 73 in 2023.

Muckross House, together with Muckross House Research Library and Muckross Traditional Farms, make up the three sites which received ‘maintenance of full accreditation’ for the third time. By pre-

serving and caring for its collections and buildings, these sites collectively provide a deeply authentic and valuable insight into traditions and life in Ireland and Kerry from a number of vantage points. Research and Education Officer at Muckross House, and Council Member with the Heritage Council Patricia O’Hare said:

“Our sites have a long and proud history of working alongside the MSPI and were among the original museums to participate in the programme when it was initiated. It is very satisfying to see how much the programme has grown since then and how our own sites at Muckross have developed in tandem. The benefits of achieving and maintaining full accreditation by engaging in the programme have had a transformative effect on the quality of the collections and buildings we upkeep, as well as on the overall visitor experience across our three sites.”

Commenting at the ceremony, Chief Executive of the Heritage Council Virginia Teehan said:

“As Ireland’s only accreditation programme for museums, MSPI has become an integral part of the sector. Seeing the variety of museums represented at the ceremony, along with the increase in participants year on year, further underline its importance. I am happy to say that the Heritage Council has committed in its new five-year strategy to making further improvements to the MSPI through

increased funding, and through new training and professional development opportunities for the volunteers and the professionals who run our museums.”

Presenting the awards today, Council Member for the Heritage Council, Sheila Pratschke said:

“It was a real privilege for me to be in Kilkenny Castle, another MSPI-accredited site, and to be able to personally congratulate all of this year’s award winners. I know how hard these museums have worked for their accreditation and are richly deserving of this recognition.”

VOX POPS

One week on: Local reaction to coffee cup scheme

Last week the business community of Killarney announced a project to end single use coffee cups.

The town will become the first in Ireland to do so.

After last week’s launch, the business leaders will continue to push the idea ahead of its official start on July 31. The move to reusables is estimated to remove over one million single use cof-

fee cups from the town annually. The decision to move to a reusable takeaway system has been taken following an agreement by 25 local independent coffee shops and 21 hotels.

One week in, the Killarney Advertiser spent a morning in the town centre where we caught up with café owners and workers during the peak coffee break.

This is what they had to say...

Killarney Advertiser's Sean Moriarty was out and about this week chatting to locals and getting their reaction to The Killarney Coffee Cup Project

“They are slowly catching on. People are starting to buy the cups. We haven’t had too many cups back [under the deposit scheme]. There are a lot of people with their own cups which is even better,” said Bobbie-Jane.

“It has really taken off, the tourists are getting used to the idea, people are on board,” said Breeda.

”We are getting great positive feedback from people. There has been a real mindset change and a lot of people are likening it to the plastic bag levy. The craic was 90 for Mary’s birthday

Although the Kilbrean woman wont turn 90 until next month the celebration was brought forward to accommodate the those who travelled from all over the world for the occasion.

But it was worth it as she was surrounded by all her 17 children, 11 sons and six daughters to share her birthday celebrations: Denis, Killarney; Marion Kervick, Canada; Kathleen O Reilly, New York; Michael, London; Padraig, New York; Sean, London; Philip, Louisiana; Donal, London; Peter, Killarney; David, Sydney; Brendan, Killarney; Anthony, London; Anne Holland, Killarney; Caroline Hampton, New York; Desmond, Killarney; Evelyn Murphy, Killarney; and Geraldine O Sullivan, Killarney.

She also has 30 Grandchildren and two Great Grand Children, Kieran and Caragh Florence from Canada. There were four generations present and it was the first time she had met her all grandchildren.

“Her birthday isn't till August 18 but was celebrated a month earlier to accommodate all the travelling party. None of them wanted to miss this special day. The last time they were all together was unfortunately at their father's funeral, John Michael almost 13 years ago,” said her daughter Anne Holland.

“The celebrations started with a barbeque last Thursday at Sean, her son's house in Kilbrean.

“This was for family, friends and neighbours to enjoy the celebrations with the birthday girl. Her nephew Fr. Martin Spillane gave her a special blessing for health and happiness. Prize chef, Gerry O Reilly was on duty at the grill. There was also a surprise party for members of the family who turned 60 during the year, twins, Philip and Donal and Sister in law Debbie. Highlight of the night was a video of memories compiled by her daughter Anne.

Friday night, the immediate family, along

with Mary went to Mary's favourite restaurant, Cronin's.

“Saturday was the big day when all Mary wanted for her birthday was a bus trip to Dingle to see the sights. Even the rain couldn't dampen the spirits of the trip.

Seamus Healy, photographer took the precious photos of the family before they headed on Dero's bus to Dingle.

“Mary was joined by her sister Anne Healy, 92, and her brother John Joe Healy, 86 also. First stop, Inch beach for a mini stop. Then on to Slea Head to see the beautiful scenery along the Atlantic Way. Ceann Sibeal, Golf Club was the venue for the delicious lunch. Next stop

was Foley's outside Inch to watch the All Ireland semi final before heading back to Killarney. The weekend ended with more celebrations when Kerry beat Derry to reach the All Ireland final.”

Mary, nee Healy, was born and raised in Kilbrean and built a house on the family land just a stone's throw from the family home.

A Killarney woman through and through she loves the outdoors, Rambling Houses, plays and musicals. Her other hobbies are knitting and word search puzzles.

Four generations , Caragh, Claire and Kieran Florence, Marion Kervick and Mary Spillane. Mary Spillane, Kilbrean turned 90.

There are lots of options outside of CAO

There have never been so many ways for students to realise their potential on leaving secondary school. While much focus remains on Leaving Cert results and CAO points, there is a growing number of options open outside of the CAO system. These pathways provide education training options across multiple sectors, suit a variety of learners and provide progression routes onto further qualifications or directly into the workplace. And a key feature of such pathways is that entry is not based on CAO points and applications remain open at this stage!

The Further Education and Training (FET) sector provides a variety of options and pathways across multiple career sectors which include Post Leaving Cert (PLC) courses, Tertiary Programmes (new for 2023) as well as apprenticeships and traineeships.

POST LEAVING CERTIFICATE COURSES

Colleges of Further Education (FE) are still accepting applications for courses in a huge variety of subject areas, providing students with skills to go directly into the workplace and QQI FET/FETAC qualifications which allow them to progress onto colleges and universities here in Ireland, the UK and Europe. To check out the full range of PLC courses available and to apply, check out www.fetchcourses.ie . For those who are interested in progression routes onto Higher Education in Ireland, take a look at QQI-FET Applicant section of www.cao.ie . Individual FE college websites also have lots of information available on entry requirements, course content and career options.

TERTIARY EDUCATION PROGRAMMES

A brand new pathway to completing a degree is available to students from September 2023 through the Tertiary Education Programmes. This exciting new option allows students to start their degree in a FE college or local Education & Training Board (ETB) and after one or two years transfer to a partner Higher Education Institution (University) to complete the degree. Currently there are 23 courses on offer nationwide. For further details on courses, entry requirements and to apply see - https://nto.hea.ie

APPRENTICESHIPS

There are currently 69 different apprenticeships available across a huge variety of sectors including construction, arboriculture, electrical, biopharma, ICT, finance, insurance, logistics & supply chain, sales, agriculture, hairdressing, engineering, hospitality, healthcare, mechanics, auctioneering and recruitment. Apprentices are paid while training, so they are earning while learning. For more details see www.apprenticehip.ie

TRAINEESHIPS

Traineeships combine learning in the classroom and experience in the workplace to improve employment outcomes for participants. There are over 75 traineeships available nationally across a variety of industries including business, health and social care, constructions, engineering, transport and logistics, finance, hospitality, fashion and beauty, ICT and more. They start at various times during the year. More details can be found on https://www.solas.ie/programmes/traineeship/ also from the local Education and Training Boards (ETBs).

NATIONAL LEARNING NETWORK

The National Learning Network (NLN) offers specialist training, courses and support services for students and adults who need extra support to progress in their education or into the workplace. A key aspect of the NLN is a welcoming and supportive environment, small class sizes and the flexibility for students to learn a pace which suits their needs. More information can be found on www.nln.ie

DIRECT ENTRY COURSES

There are over 200 direct entry courses to various college across Ireland in a variety of areas of study and duration. These can be researched by using the Course Finder facility on www.careersportal. ie and www.qualifax.ie . These include some private colleges.

STUDY OUTSIDE OF IRELAND

There are still opportunities to apply for colleges in the UK and Europe. The UCAS Clearing system is open until October 17th which allows students to apply for vacant college places in the UK. See www.ucas. com for details. Applications are still open for some colleges and universities in Europe, where entry requirements are often lower than similar options here in Ireland. See www.eunicas.ie and www. medicalpoland.ie for more details.

Package holidays can be ready-made or customised packages. A package holiday is sold at a total or inclusive price, must last for more than 24 hours, or include an overnight stay. It does not matter if you are asked to pay separately for different parts of the package (such as, the flight or transport), your holiday is still a ‘package holiday’. Package holidays include at least 2 of the following:

• Transport, like flights, a cruise, or train or coach journeys

• Accommodation

• Other tourist services, like tours, excursions, guides, or tickets for concerts or theme parks

· Car rental

What happens if I need to cancel my package holiday?

You can cancel your booking at any time before travelling, although you should try to give reasonable notice. However, you may have to pay a cancellation fee. If there are unavoidable or extraordinary circumstances happening at or near your destination that will affect your holiday (for example war or a natural disaster), you may be able to cancel for free.

Have I a right to transfer my contract?

You can transfer your holiday to another person once you give the travel organiser reasonable written notice (at least seven days) before the start of the package. You and the person you transfer the package holiday to are responsible for paying the balance of money due to the travel organiser. You are also responsible for any other costs the organiser has to pay to carry out the transfer. What happens if the organiser cancels my package holiday?

If the travel organiser cancels the package holiday or changes a term of the contract, including the price or type of accommodation, they must give you the option of either:

• A replacement holiday of the same or better quality

• A lower grade holiday, with a refund of the difference in price

• A full refund within 14 days

The organiser has the right to cancel the package due to factors out of their control. This includes an act of God, or where they didn’t get the number of people they needed for the package holiday.

What happens if my flight is cancelled?

If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a choice of:

• A refund with 7 days

• Re-routing to your final destination as soon as possible

You may also be entitled to compensation.

If your flight is cancelled and it is part of a package holiday, you have additional rights regarding the rest of your holiday. You should contact your travel organiser to talk through your options for rearranging your flights. If this is not possible and your holiday has to be cancelled, you are entitled to a replacement holiday or a full refund. Read more about holiday cancellations on https://bit.ly/PackageHolidays

Does my travel organiser have to help me if I encounter any major difficulty while on the holiday?

The travel organiser must give appropriate help if you are in difficulty. This includes:

• Giving you information about healthcare, local authorities, consular assistance (for example if you have had a serious accident)

• Helping with communications, for example helping you make long distance calls or other forms of contact so you can find other travel arrangements

How can I make a complaint if I am unhappy about the holiday?

If you need to make a complaint, read your contract to see how to do this. It will explain who you should complain to – and how (that is, in writing or another way).

If you have a complaint while on your trip away, you should report the problem at once to your local holiday representative or travel organiser in the area. If you are not satisfied that the complaint has been dealt with properly when you return from the holiday, you must complain in writing to the travel organiser. You must do this within 28 days from the end of the holiday.

If the travel organiser does not respond within a reasonable time, you should send a second letter of complaint. If you are still not happy with your travel organiser's response, then you have the following options:

You can get advice from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) for complaints about travel organisers based in Ireland. Get advice from European Consumer Centre (ECC) Ireland for complaints about travel organisers based outside Ireland but in the EU/EEA (EEA is the European Economic Area). In some cases, ECC Ireland may liaise on your behalf to find a good working solution with the travel organiser through the centre based in the country of the organiser.

RV Tom Crean celebrates first year

The RV Tom Crean, Ireland's cutting-edge research vessel, proudly celebrates its one-year anniversary since its arrival in Galway on July 18, 2022.

During this eventful year, the vessel accomplished significant milestones. It completed 296 survey days, welcoming 177 scientists across 20 surveys, totalling 2,060 scientist days. Traveling an impressive distance of 32,215 nautical miles, equivalent to circling Ireland approximately 46 times, the vessel showcased its remarkable range and capabilities, paving the way for next year and beyond.

Over the past 12 months, INFOMAR,

Ireland's national seabed mapping program, successfully conducted 5 surveys, mapping a total area of 6,317 square kilometres – an area larger than County Galway. This comprehensive mapping effort will greatly contribute to our understanding of Ireland's seabed and its valuable resources. Additionally, the vessel conducted 4 Ne-

phrops Underwater TV Surveys, gathering valuable stock assessment data from 539 stations across the Porcupine Bank, Aran Grounds, Celtic Sea, and Bay of Biscay. This combined effort is approximately equal to 133 kilometres of seabed filmed.

The vessel served as a valuable training platform for students from institutions across Ireland also, providing 236 students with a unique learning experience over the course of 50 days throughout the year.

Commenting on the first anniversary of the vessel, Marine Institute Interim CEO Michael Gillooly said, “The RV Tom Crean has proven itself as an invaluable asset to Ireland's scientific community, and we eagerly look forward to the remarkable achievements yet to come.”

Enoch Burke ordered to pay legal costs

Enoch Burke, who was dismissed from his teaching position for alleged gross misconduct, has been ordered to pay legal costs to Wilson’s Hospital School in their successful High Court action against him earlier this year.

During a heated exchange with Justice Alexander Owens this week, Burke said that his case concerned his refusal to refer to a student who allegedly wished to transition by a different name and by a different pronoun and was one of religious belief and freedom of consciousness. He said objecting to people being transgender was the right of every citizen of Ireland.

Awarding the costs to the school, Justice Owens also made an order restraining Burke from trespassing on the premises of the school in Multyfarnham, Co Westmeath, but said that the German and History teacher was not prevented from attending outside the school gates. In its action, the school had argued it was correct to place Burke on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a disciplinary process against him.

27% Drop in TV licences issued in first week of July

There was a notable drop in the number of TV licences issued in the first week in July compared to the same time last year, with 11,241 licences issued compared to 15,432 in 2022.

The licence figures were released by Minister for Media Catherine Martin in a reply to a parliamentary question from Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin.

of 5,837 fewer TV licences were

issued during June and the first week in July than the same period in 2022. This equates to a reduced revenue of €933,920, a drop of 27%.

Mr Griffin, who sits on the Oireachtas Committee on Media, believes a significant proportion of the population has lost confidence in RTÉ.

Mr Bakhurst said the new leadership team was working hard to rebuild trust in the organisation and will continue to do so and went on to thank the

hard-working staff who he said, despite everything, remain focused on producing great programming and content for audiences across television, radio and online.

Ms Martin said her officials would continue to monitor the number of licences issued and the impact on TV licence fee receipts.

The total number of licences issued in June this year was 73,421, while this figure was 75,067 in 2022.

Ireland has become warmer and wetter in the last thirty years

Met Eireann has published Ireland's new Climate Averages for 1991 to 2020. For this study, Met Eireann looked at two 30 year periods - 1961 to 1990 and 1991 to 2020.

Spring experienced the greatest temperature rise, with an increase of 0.8°C between the two average periods. Highest rises in temperature were seen in May at around 1.0°C, followed by around 0.9°C in February, April and November.

Sunshine hours have also shown an upward trend between the two periods, with around 5% or 63 more hours of annual sunshine.

Annual average rainfall has increased by around 7% and almost all regions in Ireland have seen an increase in annual average rainfall between 1961 to 1990 and 1991 to 2020.

Met Eireann says "we know that the atmosphere is warming and what we're seeing at the local and national scale fits the international picture".

JUNE TEMPERATURES BREAK 83-YEAR-OLD RECORD

Met Éireann has announced that June 2023 will be recorded as the hottest June on record. Data shows that Ireland has experienced its first June with 16+°C average temperatures, exceeding the previous June record which held for 83 years,

Berliners warned of suspected lioness on the loose

A presumed lioness is on the loose in Berlin, where residents in some areas were warned to stay indoors as police tried to track down the animal.

Police were first alerted by two members of the public who recorded mobile phone footage of what appeared to be a wild boar and a lion chasing each other. Authorities believe the wild cat could be

asleeping in one of the many lakeland forests in Brandenburg, the state that surrounds Germany's capital.

"We recommend that people shouldn't leave the house to walk and especially not to go jogging in the forest," said Michael Gruber, mayor of Kleinmachnow, where the animal was first spotted. Since no zoos or circuses have reported a missing lioness, police believe she must be an escaped pet.

half a degree higher than June 1940.

The highest temperature of 2023 so far, 28.8°C, was reported at Oak Park in Co Carlow on Tuesday 13th June. This is the third consecutive year that a temperature at or above this value has been observed in Ireland.

Met Éireann’s Climatologist, Paul Moore says, “Although temperatures have fallen in recent days, they will not prevent this June’s record-breaking situation. This year’s particularly warm June is part of an observed warming trend and our research shows that this trend will continue. Our recently published TRANSLATE project provides a reminder that right across society we need to understand and plan for a changing climate”.

“An average monthly temperature of greater than 16°C has been seen in July and August but never before in June. June 2023 was well above normal due to persistent warm days and nights.”

Met Éireann researcher Dr. Pádraig Flattery explains, “As climate change continues, we can expect further records to be broken and more frequent and extreme weather events. A warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture (about 7% for every 1°C of warming) and warmer waters, in turn, provide more energy for storms and can contribute to extreme rainfall events.”

‘Wettest July on record’ causing ‘havoc’ on tillage farms

Tillage farmers are racing against time to harvest crops during the current weather window.

Michael Hennessy, head of crops knowledge transfer at Teagasc, spoke this week of the severe pressure facing farmers following the heavy rain of recent weeks.

“In terms of the weather in July, certainly it’s been the wettest on record I think in many places, so it’s really causing havoc out there,” he said.

Teagasc is predicting that the overall production of cereals across the country this year will drop by 16% to just over two million tonnes.

This is down from the harvest of 2.4 million tonnes last year, which was slightly above average.

Teagasc is currently forecasting that the spring barley will be back by 9% and spring wheat production is expected to drop by 38% and winter barley may be back by 24%.

Firefighters across Europe rush to Greece to battle Athens wildfires

Fire planes and ground crews from several European countries are heading to Greece where wildfires outside Athens have intensified as relentless heatwave conditions are keeping much of southern Europe above 40C.

Three firefighting teams from Poland, Romania and Slovakia are due in Greece this weekend, while Israel had pledged two firefighting planes, adding to the four from Italy and France.

Temperatures in southern Greece are expected to reach 44C this weekend, in the

second heatwave to hit Europe’s Mediterranean south in two weeks. This week Rome hit a sweltering 42C to 43C, while highs in Sicily and Sardinia reached 46C. Parts of Spain hit 45C. The firefighters were being sent to Greece as part of a European Union civil protection mechanism that includes the planned deployment of international crews to parts of southern Europe over the summer.

Large crowds enjoy extended Killarney Races Festival

The July meeting at Killarney races is enjoying a longer than usual run.

Having started Monday evening the meeting will conclude on Friday adding to extra days of racing to the event. Already this week, racegoers have en-

joyed three days of flat racing. The focus for Thursday and Friday switched to a National Hunt event. It is unusual to have over the fences racing in Ireland at this time of the year. The festival closes with Ladies Day on Friday.

Four point plan to deliver electric car charge points

Kerry County Council would “welcome engagement through its pre-planning service with private business owners and accommodation providers or existing garage forecourt operators who are exploring the provision of private electric charging facilities.”

Following a motion by Killarney-based South Kerry politician Patrick Connor-Scarteen at Monday’s full council meeting the local authority revealed it is following a four-point plan to deliver more charge points to the county.

1. Home charging to be the main form of charging for most electric vehicle owners. Actions will be taken to prioritise the installation of smart home chargers and

to encourage the deployment of V2G technologies where feasible.

2. Residential neighbourhood charging to provide a similar solution to home charging for EV owners without access to a driveway.

3. Destination charging to bridge the gap between home and local charging and meet the need for top-up charging where required.

4. En-route charging, involving higher-speed, higher-power charge points at strategic locations, to become increasingly important to cater for charging on the go. This will facilitate the quicker transition of high-mileage vehicle fleets to EV technology. It will also address range anxiety.

Ballyfinnane Hillclimb was deemed a massive succes

Kerry Motor Club and the Ballyfinnane Community Hall Association created motorsport history in the mid-Kerry village on Sunday.

The two groups marked the 120th anniversary of the first motorsport event in Kerry by running a hillclimb event in the area.

Modern safety rules prevented the use of the original hill but Kerry Motor Club and Motorsport Ireland officials identified a new section of road in the area that allowed the local club to run its first hillclimb in Kerry since the mid-1980s.

Huge crowds descended on the village where a range of sideshows like a classic car display and a motorcycle exhibition added to the occasion.

The 1.41km course ran from Aubee Bridge to the Ballyfinnane Community Hall, winner John Donnely from Tyrone cleared the course in an incredible 44.29 seconds in his Pilbeam single-seater racing car. He set the time on his first of five passes over the course.

Limerick’s Ben O’Brien was second in his Gould GR 37 racing car. His best time over the distance came 46.79 seconds, coming on the fifth and final run.

Ed Synan from Shanagolden was the best of the rally car drivers, he finished third overall in his Escort.

Firies-based West Cork man Vince McSweeney was the best of the local drivers. The rules stated that a driver must have a Kerry address to qualify for the award. The Mitsubishi Lancer E7 driver finished fourth overall.

awards. Killarney’s David Maes won class 2 for Modified Production Saloons in his BMW Mini. This was his first-ever motorsport award of any description.

Billy Burke, who usually races in Mondello Park, contested his first closed road event and won Class 3A in his Honda Civic. The event also permitted rally cars and local drivers took the opportunity to take their cars for a run.

PJ O’Dowd double-drove Ken McKenna’s Peugeot 205 and beat the car’s owner for the Class 8A win. David Griffin was third in this class, Declan O’Sullivan fourth and London-based Killarney man Mick Smith fifth.

Mark O’Leary won class 8B. Local man Keith O’Connor, a member of the organising team was fourth in the same class. Cyril Wharton, one of the sponsors of the event won class 9B and despite clutch issues motorcycle racer Anthony O’Carroll was fourth.

Killarney and District Motor Club members Brian Hickey was third in class 10, John Hickey fifth and Tom O’Sullivan seventh.

Kerry Motor Club officials praised the support they got from the local community to get the event off the ground and sponsors Brian O’Neill Garden Equipment and Trailers, Cyril Wharton Tool Hire and Moriarty’s Central Cars Sales for their support.

Used car price inflation slows

A recent survey from Done Deal has found that the quarterly price inflation rate slowed from 2.7% pre pandemic to 0.9% in the second quarter of this year.

Done Deal reported a decrease in demand and increase in the stock of used cars advertised on its site resulting in the lower rate of increase. Prices are still 79% higher than pre-pandemic however and this differential looks set to continue in the short term. The market for new cars is also growing.

The unblocking of supply chain issues in the motor industry has led to a reduced waiting time for new models. According to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) 19,440 new cars were registered during quarter two of this year, representing an increase of 27.4% compared to the same period a year ago. Imports increased slightly but only by 0.7%. Imports from the UK continue to reduce, now at 28.8% of the imported market, compared to 93.6% in 2020. Recent figures from SIMI show the growing numbers of new EV registrations, which will trickle down into the

used car market as the year progresses. For the month of June 1,441 new electric vehicles were registered compared to 188 in June 2022 (+666.49%). So far this year 14,307 new electric cars have been registered in comparison to 8,446 (+69.39%) on the same period 2022. Electric Vehicles, Plug-in Hybrids and Hybrids continue to increase their market share, with a combined market share (year to date) now of 43.63%. Petrol remains the largest share at 31.85%, Diesel accounting for 21.87%, Electric 18.46%, Hybrid 17.37% and Plug-in Electric Hybrid 7.80%.

Housing Supply Shortage Continues to be an Issue in a busy market

With recent reports showing that house prices fell in May by 0.2% compared to the same period last year, figures from the CSO (Central Statistics office) show prices increasing on an annual basis.

The national Residential Property Price Index (RPPI) increased by 2.4 per cent between May 2022 and May 2023 with house prices outside of the capital increasing by 4.5 per cent.

A daft.ie report found that demand for housing has increased nationally by 17% in May compared to the same period last year.

With this comes increased demand for

new build housing which has seen significant increases of 11.1% in the past 12 months. Second hand homes increased by 3.5% in the same period.

So, what do all these figures and statistics actually mean?

On a local level, supply of both new and 2nd hand properties is very limited. There is strong demand for well-located homes from first time buyers and homeowners trading up and trading down. The net result is that properties are currently commanding strong prices due to heightened demand and limited supply. This trend looks set to continue in the short term with supply levels stagnant.

The shortage of supply has recently been highlighted by Kerry University Hospital who report it is impacting the hospital’s ability to recruit and retain staff.

DNG Ted Healy is reporting very strong interest in properties in Killarney town with sales being agreed in record time. ‘The list of interested ready to go buyers is ever increasing’ according to Ted Healy. ‘We are agreeing sales in record time, many for well in excess of the asking prices. We are currently looking for properties for sale to satisfy the demand and replenish our stocks after a number of busy weeks securing sales on behalf of our clients’

MIRACLE PRAYER

Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Say for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted. BOS

“Believe me if all those Endearing young charms, Which I gaze on so fondly today Were to change by tomorrow And fleet in my arms, Like fairy gifts fading away, Thou would still be adored, As this moment thou art, Let thy loveliness fade as it will And around the dear ruin, Each wish of my heart, Would entwine itself verdantly still, It is not while beauty

And youth are their own And thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear, That the fervour and faith

Of a soul can be known, To which time will but make Thee more dear, Oh the heart that has truly loved, Never forgets, But as truly loves on to the close, As the sun flower turns

On her God when he sets, The same look, which she turned, When he rose”

Okwute makes comeback for Kerry FC

Killarney man Daniel Okwute has rejoined League of Ireland side Kerry FC following a spell on the books of Stockport County.

The 19-year-old made the move from Kerry’s U19 set-up to Stockport in 2022 and after playing for Finn Harps on loan earlier this year, he now returns to Kerry for the remainder of the season

The centre forward will don the number 21 shirt for Kerry FC.

“It feels great to be back here in Kerry and to get the chance to play for Kerry FC in our first season in the senior League of Ireland,” Okwute said upon re-signing for the Tralee-based club. “I played in the academy here for a number of years and it always gave me a sense of pride to wear the Kerry jersey.

“I’m looking forward to teaming up with the boys. There are a lot of familiar faces in and around the dressing room and I was impressed by them when I went down to Tralee with Finn Harps earlier in the year.”

First Team Manager Billy Dennehy said:

“It’s great to have Daniel back. He is a young player who started off this journey with myself and James Sugrue many years ago when we first took over the Kerry U17s. He developed really well in the underage leagues. We brought him up to U19 level when he was still

U17. His performances at that level were really strong.

“From there he got his deserved move to Stockport. You’re obviously at a different stage of your career when you join a professional club and you’re moving away from home with a lot of new elements to contend with. For Daniel, I suppose things didn’t go the way he hoped, but he is still so young in his career he still has so much to do in his football career and many more chapters to add to his story.

“So I’m very excited to be working with Daniel again and helping him to get back to the level I know he is capable of. We will do everything here in Kerry FC to further develop his game and his career over the coming years.

“I know Daniel is hungry and determined to perform well and help Kerry soccer as much as possible.”

Okwute went straight into the starting line-up for last Saturday night’s match against Longford Town in Bishopsgate.

Fellow newcomers Ethan Kos, Martin Coughlan, and goalkeeper Lee Axworthy also made their debuts, but Kerry were unable to secure a result as the hosts ran out 2-1 winners. Leo Gaxha scored from the spot for Kerry.

Kerry face Ringmahon Rangers tonight (Friday) at home in the first round of the FAI Cup.

Clifford-inspired Kerry break Derry hearts

Adam Moynihan reports from Croke Park, Dublin

Reigning champions Kerry fought back from the brink to overcome a spirited Derry side in a breathless semi-final at Croke Park on Sunday.

Trailing by two points heading into the final five minutes, The Kingdom showed admirable character to rattle off five unanswered points in a row.

The drama didn’t finish there as Derry had an opportunity to snatch an 80th-minute equalising goal but star forward Shane McGuigan accidentally kicked a free over the bar as he attempted to drop it into the square.

Kerry can now look forward to another final in two weeks’ time. Their greatest rivals, Dublin, stand in the way of All-Ireland title number 39.

FAST-PACED

This match was teed up to be dour and slow-paced but two early goals set the tone for a ferociously competitive first half.

Gareth McKinless slotted home the first for Derry in the fifth minute when he tidied things up after Shane Ryan denied

Brendan Rogers from close range. Kerry’s response was immediate and devastating as Gavin White burst forward to palm home Seánie O’Shea’s assist just a minute later. Kerry now led by 1-1 to 1-0 but three scores on the bounce by Paddy McGrogan, Paul Cassidy and Shane McGuigan pushed Derry two points ahead.

David Clifford and Chrissy McKaigue were battling hard away from the ball and at this point Clifford was getting the better of the experienced Derry defender. He kicked 0-5 in total in the first period, including two wonderful efforts from play. Things were set up nicely with ten minutes to go in the half but then a black card for Diarmuid O’Connor following a foot trip on Conor Glass meant Kerry were temporarily reduced to 14.

Derry made hay while O’Connor was in the bin. Brendan Rogers (two), Ciarán McFaul and Shane McGuigan all scored during this period, with a solitary point by wandering keeper Shane Ryan all that Kerry could muster in response. Derry

were unhappy with a collision between Ryan and McGuigan in the build-up to that point - Ryan appeared to shield himself and catch McGuigan with his backside in the process. The referee deemed it unintentional.

Clifford (mark) and McGuigan (free) exchanged points in stoppage time as Derry went in at the interval three points ahead (1-11 to 1-8).

IMPACT

Jack O’Connor called on the experienced Stephen O’Brien at half-time and the Kenmare man made a significant impact without the ball in the third quarter.

At the other end, his clubmate Seánie O’Shea began to find his rhythm and he and Clifford kicked two points apiece to make it a tied game with 48 minutes on the clock. Meanwhile, Conor Doherty broke forward to kick Derry’s only score of this spell.

Ryan was called into action in the 52nd minute to deny McKinless with a wonderful save, but Derry kept their nerve and points by Ciarán McFaul and McGuinness (free) edged them out into a two-point lead with ten minutes left.

Another six minutes passed before either team scored again and Kerry were now in real danger of slipping out of the championship, but a flurry of scores between the 66th and 71st minutes turned the game

on its head.

O’Shea (free) and Clifford (free) made it level at 1-14 each, before an inspirational left-footed effort by O’Brien a minute from time gave Kerry their first lead in 37 minutes.

Derry probed but Kerry looked menacing on the counter and points by O’Shea and Man of the Match Clifford created a three-point cushion.

The men in green and gold had at their chances to put the tie to bed but they failed to execute, which left McGuigan with a last-ditch opportunity to create a scramble in front of the Hill in the tenth minute of added time.

His floated kick had too much on it, though. Never before did Kerry supporters cheer an opposition point with so much fervour.

KERRY: S Ryan (0-1); G O’Sullivan, J Foley, T O’Sullivan; P Murphy, T Morley, G White (1-0); D O’Connor (0-1), J Barry; D Moynihan, S O’Shea (0-4, 1f), A Spillane; P Clifford (0-1), D Clifford (0-9, 4f, 1m), P Geaney.

Subs: S O’Brien for Spillane; T Brosnan for Geaney; B Ó Beaglaoich for Murphy; M Burns for Moynihan, R Murphy for P Clifford.

Analysing the big calls

Kerry v Derry was a wonderful advert for real Gaelic football. It was open, action-packed, and full of skill and passion.

Unfortunately, a lot of the post-match talk has focussed on the referee and the decisions he made over the course of the game. Here’s my analysis of the key incidents.

• 28’ Diarmuid O’Connor black card. The Kerry midfielder is adjudged to have tripped Brendan Rogers as the Derry midfielder attempts to get up and move the ball on. The rules are very clear on this type of infraction. McQuillan correctly issues a black card.

• 32’ Shane Ryan clashes with Shane McGuigan. A loose square pass high up the field from Tom O’Sullivan forces Ryan to scamper and gather a bouncing ball under pressure from McGuigan. Ryan jumps, collects, and turns his body. I think he is expecting a much heavier hit from McGuigan, but the Derry man stands his ground. Ryan’s backside hits McGuigan flush in the face, knocking him to the floor. Ryan breaks forward and kicks a point.

For me, Ryan has every right to go for the ball and once he leaves the ground, he has every right to turn his body to protect himself. McQuillan waved play on, which was the correct call.

• 37’ David Clifford shoulders McGuigan. Clifford catches his opposite number with a bone-crunching but legal shoulder. McQuillan incorrectly awards Derry a tap-over free and also issues a yellow card, much to the Kerry captain’s bemusement.

• 66’ McKinless called for a foul on Stephen O’Brien. My initial reaction was that this one was soft and watching it back hasn’t changed my mind. McKinless does make contact in an awkward fashion but

no Kerry fan would have complained if play carried on. Instead, McQuillan awards a close in free. Kerry score to close the gap to one.

• 67’ Clifford is fouled by McKaigue. Derry fans were unhappy with this one as well but McKaigue clearly pulls him back. An obvious foul.

• 75’ Time ticks on… Four minutes of additional time were signalled by the match officials. There are 74 minutes and 32 seconds on the clock when Ryan comes and clears what appears to be Derry’s last attempt at fashioning an equalising goal. Several players on both sides stop moving, expecting the final whistle.

The whistle doesn’t come, however, so Kerry carry the ball forward. The clock reads 75-plus when Odhran Lynch intercepts David Clifford’s attempted pass to Tom O’Sullivan. Still no final whistle. Derry go up the pitch. McKinless wins a free, and then…

• 76’ McKinless kicks O’Shea. When McKinless attempts to take the free quickly, O’Shea knocks the ball out of his hands. The Derry player forcefully kicks O’Shea across the midriff – so forcefully that he hurts himself and needs to be stretchered off. To my mind, this was the only blatant red card that McQuillan missed. (Having said that, it wouldn’t have affected the result.)

The referee made mistakes on both sides. A couple of those decisions went against Derry in the closing stages so their frustration is understandable, but at the end of the day it was their failure to convert their chances that let them down.

Ultimately, this idea that referee’s go out to screw teams over or that they have agendas is ridiculous. If Derry had managed to score a goal with that last chance and then win in extra time, Kerry fans would feel aggrieved with the same referee for the same refereeing performance. I think that tells its own story.

Kingdom will need more scorers to take down Dublin

Kerry and Dublin was, perhaps, the preferred All-Ireland final pairing in all counties except Monaghan and Derry. And that’s what we’re getting. Dublin were never in danger of losing to Monaghan, although the Ulster side

gave them a real test. Cormac Costello (nephew of Legion’s Breda Murphy nee Costello) was the star forward, torturing Monaghan in the opening half by scoring delightful points left and right.

Kerry v Derry was a joy to behold with

both teams playing the game that appeals to spectators: fast, furious and open. Some splendid shooting by Derry gave them a three-point lead at the interval.

The chance was there for Derry to go four

Another local Tailteann connection

week’s edition, we featured the antiquity and importance of Aonach Tailteann and the Games at Teltown. It struck a chord with some of our readers.

Pat O’Brien (Fossa) is well known in local circles for his great administrative work promoting hurling with St Pat’s East Kerry. Teltown is his home place. His father Mattie bought a 10-acre farm there in 1949 for the sum of £100. The site of Aonach Tailteann and Queen Tailtiu’s grave is on the O’Brien farm, and it is still in the O’Brien ownership by Gerard, a brother of Pat’s.

cause of the death with the score tied at 1-5 each.

He also helped to revive the Tailteann Games. The Willwood Group sponsored an annual athletics tournament in the 1970s. Pat’s sister Teresa was a fine sprinter who competed in the track events. Athletics Ireland is the governing body for athletes at present, following on a noble tradition in Teltown. It is great to know that each year a torch is lit at ‘The Fort’ and Teresa O’Brien is one of those lovers athletics who helps to relay the torch to Croke Park.

baller who competed in the high jump in the 1924 Olympic Games. Of course, Osborne is remembered for the Osborne-roll high jump style which won him gold in the 1924 Olympics. He also won gold in the decathlon. That style pre-dated the ‘Fosbury Flop’. Stanley performed very well but was out of the medals. In the 1924 Tailteann games Stanley was second to Osborne. Other visitors to Teltown included Olympian Ronnie Delaney and the late Seán Ó Síocháin (GAA).

I am not surprised that Meath manager Colm O’Rourke resurrected the Latin dictum to display his delight with Meath winning the Tailteann Cup for the first time, following a tour de force second half display. He, too, understood the historical significance of the Tailteann series. In last

Their parents, Mattie and Brigid raised 13 children, seven boys and six girls, on that small farm. It features a national monument with a raised circular mound about 10 feet tall. On top is an area of one acre. For the O’Brien children, it was named ‘The Fort’ (An Ráth Dubh, as distinct from An Ráth Mhór).

Mattie was hugely involved in the local GAA club and all of his sons played hurling and football with the local Wolfe Tone club. He died in 1983 at one of the boys’ matches, Wolfe Tones v Oldcastle, abandoned after 51 minutes be-

Mattie often recalled how the managing director of the sponsors and the then Uachtarán of the GAA landed by helicopter and brought them to Croke Park where he was guest of honour, and rightly so. He recalled several GAA presidents who visited his home in Teltown. These included Con Murphy, Donal Keenan, Paddy McFlynn, and Paddy Buggy.

The same Mattie welcomed so many visitors to historic Teltown, including Harold Osborne (USA) and Larry Stanley, the famous Kildare and Dublin foot-

Pat’s brother Philip managed the Meath minor and U21 hurlers to All-Ireland B success and later managed the Louth seniors.

Kevin Smyth is another proud Meath man, settled in Killarney with wife and family for many years. An excellent player, he has devoted great energies to promote diversity and inclusivity for all via his coaching of local juveniles. His cousin Dónal Keogan captained Meath to Tailteann Cup victory on Saturday last and his granduncle won a Tailteann medal for tug of war. Kevin’s uncle still has that valuable medal in Meath.

clear in the third quarter but three bad misses was their undoing as Kerry came through with five points in the closing ten minutes.

Once again, Shane Ryan excelled in goal and his one-handed save in the second half was crucial to Kerry’s grandstand finish. Stephen O’Brien came on for Adrian Spillane at half-time and his impact was immediate. Remember, O’Brien had a great final in 2022 but has been out through injury for much of the past year. He made a huge difference and kicked the point to put Kerry ahead in that tense finale.

Dublin have huge options on the bench of highly experienced medal winners. Kerry’s bench is not as potent and that plus for Dublin may well be crucial with regards to where Sam will reside for the next year.

Kerry, of course, have the best footballer of all time and no matter who tries to shackle him, his consistent scoring

is unbelievable. However, Kerry are too dependent on David Clifford to hit a winning scoring margin. Look at the respective scoring sheets from last Sunday. Kerry’s goal was scored by brilliant wing back Gavin White and goalkeeper

Shane Ryan nailed an important point.

Only three of the starting forwards scored: David Clifford (0-9), Seánie O’Shea (0-4) and Paudie Clifford (0-1).

The latter played poorly by his standards both as a provider and as a scorer. No score from Geaney, Spillane or Moynihan. That scoring pattern won’t retain Sam.

The odds favour Dublin because of their strength in depth and options to bring on top class subs, so important in the modern high intensity game.

But lady luck favours Kerry. That miraculous last-minute point in last year’s semi-final was excellent but also lucky. Con O’Callaghan was missing in 2022. He will be a real handful for Foley, who was in all kinds of trouble against Shane McGuigan. Kerry were lucky that Shane Ryan wasn’t carded, or even sent off, for his rear-end charge.

More about the All-Ireland final in next week’s edition.

Celtic to remember Doyler at charity match

Killarney Celtic have excellent facilities in Celtic Park, including the John Doyle Stand dedicated to the memory of the late, great soccer and GAA player who left us 10 years ago on Wednesday, July 26.

Karl McMahon is leading a top-class committee who are organising a charity match between Celtic and Kerry FC on John’s anniversary. All the proceeds will go to Comfort for Chemo Kerry.

The funds are just flying game, which will naturally be staged in Celtic Park. Admission is a modest tenner, or a fiver for U16s.

There will be a novel auction at half-time and the prizes will include gear donated by Kerry GAA stars David and Paudie Clifford (both accomplished soccer players), a Kerry jersey signed and donated by Colm Cooper, and a jersey donated by John Egan, the Irish soccer captain who has also sent a touching video message to all at Celtic.

Brave Kerry beat Meath – and the elements –in Stack Park

ALL-IRELAND SFC SEMI-FINAL

Kerry 2-8 | Meath 0-10

AUSTIN STACK PARK

Last year Kerry LGFA were very disappointed to lose the All-Ireland to Meath. This is what spurred them on to a magnificent 2-8 to 0-10 victory over Meath at Tralee on Saturday last. Meath were bidding for three All-Irelands on the trot, but it is Kerry who advance to the semi-final on Sunday week against Mayo in Thurles.

It was a tremendous result for all these brave ladies who battled against the horrific winds and rain of Saturday last. A four-point win looks easy; it was anything but. Kerry scored just one point in the second half but had enough done by half-time to call the shots. They made most of the elements driving forward with first half goals from Síofra O’Shea and Niamh Carmody.

In the second half we saw Kerry at their best defensively, repelling the expected Meath response. I marvelled at many aspects of the Kerry play: their scoring ability, their powerful defence led by All-Star Kayleigh Cronin, the manner in which they back up the person on the ball, and their sheer brilliance in working the ball out of defence into attack. Their handling was also superb in such horrendous weather.

Declan Quill and Darragh Long have done great work and playing with that kind of spirit, fitness and skill, Kerry won’t fear Mayo, who just about got through their quarter-final against Galway.

In the other semi-final, Cork will play Dublin. That will be close, with a slight preference for Cork. Or maybe we will have another Kerry-Dublin All-Ireland final?

I am reliably informed that there is already a four-figure sum promised for one of the above jerseys.

Guests of honour at the game will be John’s wife, Lynda, daughter Ruth and members of the extended Doyle family as well as many former teammates and friends who fondly remember Doyler.

Killarney Celtic

RESULT: FAI Women’s U17 Cup Semi-Final - Killarney Celtic 2 Salthill Devon 0 (Aideen O'Brien, Lucy O'Sullivan). Killarney Celtic U17s qualified for the FAI Women's U17 Cup Final after defeating the holders Salthill Devon last Saturday with a goal in each half. Celtic had the advantage of a strong breeze in the 1st half and put pressure on Salthill from the off. Half chances came but the strong breeze made the final pass difficult. However the opening did eventually come when Celtic were awarded a free on the righthand side. Katie Foster delivered a perfectly floated ball which Aideen O'Brien headed home. Despite further pressure Celtic were unable to add to their lead and the teams retired at the break with the game still up for grabs. Salthill kicked off now with the elements at their backs and exerted pressure on Celtic but Celtic held out and then struck for the goal which gave them extra breathing space. Katie Foster made ground up the right and put in a cross which was only cleared as far as Lucy O'Sullivan who curled a shot into the right-hand corner to leave Celtic 2 to the good. Salthill never gave up but the Celtic back line restricted Salthill to long range efforts. Celtic were also still dangerous on the break as they played out time to qualify for next month's final where Celtic will play Bohemians of Waterford. Well done to the coaches and players and many thanks to all who turned up to support the girls.

CLUB AWARDS NIGHT: The magnificently appointed Killarney Brewery in Fossa played host to our Annual Awards Night on Friday last. Social committee members Sharon O’Grady, Patricia Quigley, Orla Culloty and Timmy O’Donoghue alongside Club Chairman Dave Randles pulled out all the stops to ensure a great night was enjoyed by all. Fear an ti Brian Looney made sure everything went like clockwork with the format and surroundings gaining favour with the large crowd present. Diarmaid O’Donoghue followed in the footsteps of his late father James with a place in the Clubs Hall of Fame, a choice that needed little debate. Darragh O’Doherty and Sam Bensons performances in 2022 earned them the Senior and Young Player of the Year gongs with Alan Moriarty again being named Junior Player of the Year. In a new departure Callum O'Donoghue was crowned Young Junior Player of the Year while Andrea Murphy's form saw her being named as Young Player of the Year in the Ladies department. Isabelle Corridan followed up her 2015 Player of the Year award with another in 2022, thanks to some impressive performances and outstanding commitment. The Cooper Cup for Clubperson of the Year went to Enda Walshe while Sarah Leahy's rise to international stardom in Athletics was rightly acknowledged by the Club. Big thanks also to Pat Moynihan who organised a courtesy bus to and from the venue with his usual efficiency. A reminder of our winners: Hall of Fame Diarmuid O’Donoghue. Senior Player of the Year Darragh O’Doherty. Junior Player of the Year Alan Moriarty. Young Junior Player of the Year Callum O’Donoghue. Young Player of the Year Sam Benson. Senior Ladies Player of the Year Isabelle Corridan. Young Ladies Player of the Year Andrea Murphy. Clubperson of the Year Enda Walshe. Special Recognition Award Sarah Leahy.

SENIOR MEN: The Senior B team were busy this past week with two away games. On Tuesday they were in Kilcummin for an East Kerry League date and lost by two points 2-8 to 2-6. Then on Friday, in the County League, they lost by the bare minimum, 1-6 to 0-8, in Milltown. While not a successful week the big positive is the amount of players getting game time this year. A definite step forward.

LGFA: U14 Our U14 girls travelled the short distance to Direen on Monday evening to play our near neighbours, Legion B. After a tense opening the girls settled into the game and scored a couple of well worked goals and a few points from range. Our midfield kept the ball in the right half and our forwards moved the ball well. Our backs were always in control, and we got to half time with a healthy lead. The second half saw more of the same, though the conditions made keeping the ball hard the girls played some lovely football and held out for the win.

Fossa GAA

WEEKEND: What a weekend of football for Fossa GAA on Saturday our seniors beat Brosna in Brosna to secure promotion to Division 2 of the Credit Union senior county league for the first time in the history of the club - huge credit due to Adrian Sheehan and his management team for making 2023 the best year ever for the club, all Ireland Junior final win in Croker and a week of celebrations which we could only dream about once upon a time! and now Division 2 football next year. Saturday evening our B team went to Beaufort and beat the locals to continue their magnificent run in Div 6 and on Sunday David and Paudie Clifford, our Fossa Kerry stars get Kerry over the line in an absolute enthralling all Ireland semi-final against Derry to set up the final that we all wanted - Kerry v Dublin. Weekends don’t get much better that this!

RESULT: Senior Co Lge Div 2 - back game. Brosna 0-05 Fossa 1-10. Fossa secured promotion by winning their last game to put them on 15 points in the table standings. This was a huge feat by this team, when you consider the amount of players the squad was down due to all sorts of reasons, just 5 of the 15 who started the All-Ireland final in Jan - started on Sat - but just like the rest of the games - the younger players stood up and the older players guided the team to this necessary win. Brosna started brightly and it was score for score until Tadgh O’Shea was fouled in the square and he drove the resulting penalty to the bottom right and gave Fossa a fourpoint lead., Brosna missed a few frees and Fossa scored theirs, and Fossa were the stronger team in the second half and were deserving winners on the day. Mark Dennehy was outstanding in the middle of the field, and along with Sam Buckley, Ruairi Doyle, Killian Buckley Colin Myers and Fintan Coffey set the tempo for this

RESULT: Credit Union County Senior Football League: Division 6, Round 11Milltown/Castlemaine 'B' 1-6 Killarney Legion 'B' 0-8. Venue: Paddy Burke Memorial Park, Milltown. Referee: Michael Moriarty (Keel). Well done to our junior team who triumphed by the narrowest of margins at home to Killarney Legion on Friday night in the Credit Union County Senior Football League. With a strong breeze and plenty of rain it made for challenging conditions but both sides acquitted themselves well and it made for a tight, tense and exciting encounter for the onlookers. Exchanges remained tight in the second half as neither side were able to get away from each other. It was score for score for the most part with Derek Twiss our chief marksman. The scores was level at 1-5 to 0-8 as the clocked ticked towards injury time but a mistake in the away sides defence seen a 14 yard free awarded, Derek Twiss slotted over and whilst Killarney Legion had a final chance to equalise the ball failed to go over the bar and the final whistle went with Milltown/Castlemaine edging a close contest by a solitary point.

Having come through Kerry the previous month and recognising that we are now in a provisional competition, the standards across all competitions were exceptional. The music competitions took over on the Saturday and Sunday and once again the best of the best that Munster had to offer were on display. All of our competitors played exceptionally and once again we had a number of successes with Eoin Foley & Michael Healy heading off to Mullingar to represent Kerry & Munster in their perspective disciplines. We look forward to another great Fleadh in Mullingar and look forward to further successes! Congratulations and Mile Buíochas to all our competitors, their coaches and their families for their hard work and endeavour.
