Plans for lethal Kilcummin junction go to public consultation

Plans to make Finnegan’s Cross near Kilcummin junction safer have gone on public view and motorists and interested parties have been invited to give their opinions on the plans.

The notorious accident blackspot has witnessed several serious crashes – including fatal accidents – in recent years. Local councillors, particularly Marie Moloney and Brendan Cronin, have been calling for years to have the junction upgraded.

However, every time a solution seemed to be on the horizon, the project was

It is the most decisive move so far that something might, at long last, be done to make the junctions of the L3009 and L2033 local roads more safer.

Killeen House Hotel changes hands

The Killeen House Hotel, an award-winning 23-bedroom hotel in Aghadoe, Killarney, has announced its sale to Killarney businessman Patrick Eviston, who owns and operates the Eviston House Hotel and Brook Lodge Hotel in Killarney town centre.

The hotel’s owners Michael and Geraldine Rosney are retiring after more than three decades of ownership. The new management started on Thursday this

week and all existing and future bookings and vouchers will be honoured under the new ownership.

The Killeen House Hotel and Rozzers Restaurant has been owned and operated by Geraldine and Michael Rosney since 1992.

The hotel, a former rectory for the nearby historical church, was built in 1838. It has 23 bedrooms and is set on an acre of manicured gardens less than a 10-minute drive from the centre of Killarney. Since opening, the hotel has won many national and international awards for its charm and unique guest experience.

“We would like to thank all the guests who came to visit us time and time again since we opened our doors in 1992, our

ambition was always to ensure that everyone who set foot on the premises was treated to the best of Irish hospitality. We would also like to express our gratitude to all those wonderful people who have worked with us over the course of the last 30 years and have helped to make so many special memories for everyone sending guests home happy with memories that will last a lifetime,” Geraldine and Michael Rosney said.

“We would also like to thank the wonderful local Killarney community for their support over the years and our excellent local suppliers and industry partners who have always supported us and our vision to make

the Killeen House a uniquely charming hotel.”

The hotel’s restaurant, Rozzers is regarded as one of Ireland’s best restaurant experiences. Rozzers Restaurant at the Killeen House Hotel has been in Ireland’s Top 10 fine dining restaurants on TripAdvisor for a number of years. Under Head Chef Paul O’Gorman, it was named Ireland’s number one fine dining restaurant in 2019, 2021 and 2022. O’Gorman, who has been with the hotel for 27 years, will remain in his role and is looking forward to the future under new ownership.

Lions Club Spectacles Campaign Unites Schools and Opticians to Transform Lives in Africa

Killarney Lions Club has launched its inaugural ‘Spectacles Campaign’ to collect used eyeglasses which will be recycled and provided to individuals in Africa who need them.

All primary schools and opticians in the Killarney area have signed up to the initiative, which kicks off on June 12. Adult glasses, children’s glasses, sunglasses and prescription reading glasses can all be donated.

Students will be asked to bring used eyeglasses from home to school during the week of June12, while Kennelly’s Pharmacy and Opticians, Urban Optics, Specsavers and The Optical Suite

will help extend the campaign beyond schools by serving as ongoing collection points for donations from anyone in the wider community.

“We are thrilled to launch our first-ever ‘Spectacles Campaign’ in collaboration with the national schools of Killarney and our local opticians,” said Denis Doolan, President of Killarney Lions Club.

“Through this initiative, we are asking everyone collect any glasses that they are finished with and donate them either through the primary schools or at the opticians. In doing so, they can help transform lives and contribute to a brighter future for those who lack access to proper eye care in Africa.”

Each day during Intercultural Week the pupils enjoyed learning new languages, forming new friendship, taking part in activities about their heritage and dressing in traditional dress.

In its 10th year, the highlight of the week was cuisine from around the world where the children and staff sampled traditional dishes from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Albania, Italy, Croatia, Ukraine, Finland, Italy, America, Vietnam to name but a few.

The parents of the children made great effort to prepare food for the entire school to sample and the school put on a show of their very own Eurovision to entertain the many families that attended which included the Ukrainian National anthem and also the winning song 'Stefania'.

What was your favourite part of Culture week at The Mon?

Callum: "I was born in UK and arrived in Ireland when I was 7. Cultural week is one of my favourite weeks during the school year. I wore my English rugby jersey and I really enjoyed the Irish and African Drumming work shop with Sammie from Uganda and Tim O'Shea from Kilcummin".

Ben: "It is such a fun week. The highlight is the food. There was so much choice."

Milosz: "My Mum made homemade pierogies which are small half-moon dumplings full of many different fillings so it was great to see my friends enjoying a taste of Poland.”

Regwan: “Everyone did a show and tell of their native countries so my brother Ridwan and I had the opportunity to dress in our native clothing which made a change from wearing our uniforms. We also expressed our culture through self-portrait art work.

Marc: "It is my favourite week of the year"

Culture week at The Mon celebrates diversity

What does Culture week achieve at the Mon Mrs Brosnan?

"This is our 10th year of culture week here at The Mon. I can't emphasise the importance and the unity it brings to our school, not just amongst the students but involving the parents who put a huge

amount of effort in preparing dishes from over 40 different countries. It celebrates and gives understanding and respect to every student and educates us all on the cultures around the world. It brings a positive atmosphere and excitement buzzes throughout the school.

“We celebrate our differences but we also celebrate our similarities.

“The education of acceptance and the development of empathy and diversity from a young age is hugely important for the community and the world for the future of our children.”

An artist and a chieftain laid to rest

One of the last direct descendants of the O’Donoghue Mór of Ross Castle was laid to rest this week.

Tighe O’Donoghue Ross passed away at his Glenflesk home on May 30. The native New Yorker was an esteemed artist and his work his prominent in many areas around Killarney and Kerry.

When he moved ‘home’ to Glenflesk in 1986he was able to establish, through DNA, that he was a direct descendent of the one-time rulers of the Lough Lein region.

As an artist he made a lasting impression on the region.

One of his most famous works is the ‘An Capall Mór’ sculpture on the County Bounds roads between Glenflesk and Ballyvourney.

The 81-year old also created the famous ‘Dawn and Dusk’ stain-glass windows in St Mary’s Cathedral and the statue of Saint Brendan that overlooks Tralee bay from the head of Fenit Pier.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth; son and heir to the chieftainship, Eoghan, his wife Deirdre and their sons Tiernan, Lorcan and Darragh; daughter Siobhán, her husband Bernard and their children Alanna and Hugo; daughter D’Ana, her husband John and their sons Sean and Donal; his sister Nancy, niece Melissa and her husband Chris and children Riley and Ryan.

His Requiem Mass took place on Wednesday morning this week.

BikeFest helped create the perfect weekend

In terms of the perfect weekend, the June bank holiday festivities in Killarney certainly exceeded all expectations.

There was a real celebratory atmosphere in the town and, as always, the Ireland BikeFest was central to it all

It attracted a huge attendance and so many locals joined the thousands of visitors that flocked to the BikeFest village at the Gleneagle Hotel to join in the fun and enjoy the wonderful free entertainment.

It was a boom weekend for the town with hotels, guesthouses, retail stores, restaurants, public houses and many other businesses reporting a brisk trade and it was wonderful to see.

Bridget O’Keeffe, Senior Executive, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, thanked and congratulated everybody involved in the BikeFest and all those who made it a weekend to remember in the town.

“The sunshine merely added to the occasion and it was great to see so many smiles on faces everywhere,” she said.

“It just goes to prove that when it comes to creating a wonderful welcome and putting on a great show, nobody does it better than Killarney.”

Spotted an otter lately?

Users of Killarney National Park are being asked to keep an eye out for otters – one of the country’s rarest mammals.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service IS launching a new National Otter Survey and has teamed up with researchers in Queen’s University Belfast and the National Biodiversity Data Centre to collect and collate otter records from right across the country.

The new survey will map otters and compare results to the last survey, carried out in 2010-11.

NPWS teams will be looking for characteristic signs of otters at over 900 sites throughout the country, including rivers, lakes and the coast.

Members of the public are asked to keep their eyes peeled for otters and

to get involved in this national survey by adding their sightings to the survey results.

Otters are mostly active at night and most typically seen at dawn or dusk. They may be spotted from bridges swimming in rivers or along the rocky seashore.

Otters are brown, about 80 cm (30 inches) long and can be seen gliding along the water surface before diving to show their distinctive long pointed tail which is almost as long again as their body.

Dr Ferdia Marnell, Mammal Specialist with the NPWS, said: “The otter is one of Ireland’s most elusive ani-

mals so getting as many people involved in the survey as possible will be important if we are to get good coverage. Otters are rarely seen, so instead, over the coming months, NPWS staff will be searching for otter tracks and signs.”

Dr Ferdia Marnell, Mammal Specialist with the NPWS, said: “Otters have large, webbed feet and leave distinctive footprints, but these can be hard to find. Fortunately, otters mark their territory using droppings known as spraints. Otters deposit spraints conspicuously on boulders along riverbanks, logs on lake shores or the rocky high tide line. Spraints can be up to 10 cm or 3 inches long, black through to white but commonly brown, tarry to powdery in consistency and straight or curved making them tricky to identify. Luckily, they commonly con-

tain fish bones and crayfish shells which are the otters favoured diet making them easy to tell apart from the droppings of birds and other mammals.”

The otter and its habitat are protected under the EU Habitats Directive which requires that Ireland reports on the status of the species every six years. The next report is due in 2025.

The otter suffered significant declines across much of continental Europe during the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s but remained widespread in Ireland. The most recent Irish survey (2010-2011) found signs of otter from all counties of Ireland and from sea-shore to mountain streams.

The otter hunts in water, but spends much of its time on land, and as a result is vulnerable to river corridor management such as culverting, dredging and the clearance of bankside vegetation, as well as pollution, pesticides, oil spillages, coastal developments and road traffic.

Art exhibition and kids' shows at Killarney Library

Killarney Library is hosting an exhibition by locally-based artist Martyn Bell until June 30.

Bell became an artist in 1970s following a building accident, and in the time since gone, he’s put together an extensive body of work.

The artist fell in love with watercolour work, but his daughter convinced him to work with wool and felting.

He moved to Ireland with his wife, Doris, in 1995 and worked with the acclaimed Pauline Bewick as her studio assistant, hanging her exhibitions from Cavan in the north to Kinsale in the south, including permanent one at Killorglin County Council and Library offices and SouthEast Technological University Waterford.

Aside from his Killarney work, he has also held one-man shows throughout Ireland and in the UK. His work has been acquired by people all over the globe. Doris was one of the children who came to Ireland from Germany as part of Operation Shamrock. Operation Shamrock was a scheme bringing refugee children from mainland Europe to Ireland in the aftermath of the Second World War. It was organised by the Irish Red Cross, and involved about 500 children, mostly from Germany, who stayed for three years before returning home. When back in Germany after three years in Ireland, she tried to return but ended up in England as step towards that goal. Whilst there she met and married Martyn and they had seven children. Doris only got back to Ireland when they had

all left home. This exhibition demonstrates Martyn’s innovative approach to art.

Meanwhile the library is hosting an interactive workshop for kids this Saturday morning (June 10).

The workshop takes place from 11 am-12 pm at Killarney Library. And is suitable for 4–7-year-olds.

“Join author Emma-Jane Leeson for this fun, interactive workshop involving reading Johnny Magory adventure books, Irish dancing and music, followed by an educational discussion on Irish wildlife and heritage,” said library manager Eamon Browne. Prior booking is required for the kids event by emailing killarney@kerrylibrary.ie or telephone 064 6632655.

Killarney student helps to put music to hurling

A Killarney third-level student is part of a team awarded project funding under the new ‘N-TUTORR—Transforming Learning’ initiative for Ireland’s Technological Universities sector.

Esel Acun from Killarney is part of a team of students and staff from Munster Technological University (MTU) to be awarded funding for a project titled ‘The Hurling Cú | An Cú Iomána (a universally designed performance of the skills of hurling set to Celtic music.)’

The project will see the team develop digital assets to celebrate the “Intangible Cultural Heritage” status awarded by UNESCO to hurling in 2018. According to the team, the project is based on a request made by the GAA to the UNESCO Chair at MTU to collaborate on inclusive hurling through movement and digital technology.

Featuring nods to both Cú Chulainn and warrior-queen Medbh the project aligns with an equality, diversity and inclusion theme.

The solution combines team assessment software and team development theories to improve team collaboration and increase motivation, ultimately leading to better team performance.

The N-TUTORR ‘Students as Partners in Innovation and Change’ funding grants have been awarded to 131 projects across the seven institutions that make up Ireland’s Technological Universities sector, including MTU.

A total of more than €650,000 is being awarded under the programme, with each project receiving up to €5,000 in funding.

The announcement of the funded projects took place at an event in the Spencer Hotel, Dublin, on May 23.

The auction, set to conclude on June 24, presents an incredible opportunity for sports enthusiasts and collectors alike to bid on an impressive array of items.

Two Mile school represented at national multi-denominational conference

Catherine Barry, the Principal of Two Mile National School just outside Killarney was one of the delegates at a special conference recently that discussed multi-denominational education in Ireland.

Delegates at the first in-person conference of Community National School

Principals in Ireland held last week heard new research which shows that most Irish adults (61%) show a preference for multi-denominational education, with only 9% showing a preference for a religious body to provide education.

The research, carried out with a representative sample of 1,011 adults in Ireland by Opinions, also shows that the CNS model, provided by Ireland’s Education and Training Boards (ETBs), including Kerry ETB, is associated with key aspects that influence parents of primary school going children when deciding where to send them to school.

These include being co-educational, multi-denominational, having an inclusive ethos in admissions and providing for children with special needs.

Ann O’Dwyer, Director of Schools in Kerry ETB, said: “We in Kerry ETB are delighted to meet with Community National School principals from our own and other ETBs at this conference. This

professional learning opportunity is just one example of the many supports ETBs offer schools under their patronage. In Kerry ETB we currently have three Community National Schools. We are proud to have supported all three of these schools through a transfer of patronage process. We look forward to seeing this number increase through the Schools Reconfiguration for Diversity Process over the coming years.” Delegates heard from Principals that a multi-denominational, equality-based ethos as well as a multi-belief and values curriculum, instead of a faith formation curriculum in one religion, were key in attracting new and existing primary schools to become Community National Schools.

ETBI Director of Schools Dr Seamus Conboy added: “The research by Opinions clearly shows the attractiveness of the Community National School offering to both a general sample of Irish adults and to those specifically with children of primary school going age. Indeed, my own

Listry Community Council honoured Local resident

research suggests that the CNS ethos enables teachers and school leaders to respond appropriately to diversity within the school community.”

Conference delegates also heard from

academics and education specialists including keynote speaker, Professor Patricia Mannix-McNamara, Head of the School of Education and Training Boards Ireland.

Kilgobnet National School Family Fun Run and Cake Sale

Kilgobnet National School is holding its annual Family Fun Run/ Walk on June 18, at 1pm (run starts 1.30pm), in aid of a brand new community playground at the school.

The event, which is organised by the school’s Parents Association, involves a circular 5km route, starting at the school. Everyone, from the school community and beyond, is welcome to come along on the day and join in.

Participants can expect some messy fun at the various stations along the route to add to the excitement! There’s no fee to enter, but donations will be gratefully received on the day. There will also be

refreshments back at the school, including a cake sale and music by DJ Donal. Maura O’ Connor, Principal at the school, said: “We were delighted to be informed last year that we were successful in our application to CLÁR for a playground on the grounds of the school, serving its pupils and the local community. We wish to thank sincerely all those who have supported our fundraising efforts so far. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our community and beyond, and as a result of this we are close to reaching the target amount needed to complete this exciting project. We’re all looking forward to a great day on Sunday, June 18.”

Killarney House Junior Parkrun celebrates one year of success

Killarney House junior Parkrun celebrated its first anniversary in style recently.

The event, held at 9:30 am every Sunday morning at Killarney House gardens, has brought together over 350 runners in its inaugural year, thanks to the amazing support of almost 100 dedicated local volunteers.

In the past year, Killarney House junior Parkrun has played a pivotal role in promoting a healthy and active lifestyle among the youth of the area. With 50 parkrun events successfully organised, it has become a fixture in the local community calendar.

To mark this special milestone, the anniversary event saw an impressive turnout of 73 runners, including both familiar faces and newcomers.

The morning’s run proved to be a resounding success, with 18 participants achieving personal best times.

The sense of accomplishment and camaraderie among the runners, spectators and volunteers further highlighted the positive impact that Killarney House junior parkrun has had on fostering a

supportive and inclusive environment for young athletes.

Following the fun run, participants and their families congregated at the renowned Deenagh Lodge tearooms to continue the celebrations. The tearooms provided a picturesque setting where children and adults could relish in the post-run festivities.

The anniversary celebration included an amazing cake, generously sponsored by Dalys Supervalu, a local supermarket known for its commitment to community initiatives.

“We are immensely proud of what Killarney House Junior parkrun has accomplished in its first year,” said one of the event directors. “It’s been incredible to witness the growth of the event and witness the positive impact it has had on the lives of our young runners. None of this would have been possible without the incredible support from our local volunteers and sponsors.”

MACademy students sell-out Matilda Show

Killarney was singing all things ‘Revolting’ after The MACademy’s sell out performance of ‘Revolting Kids The Musical’ which took to the stage in The INEC last week.

In their second year running the students of The MACadmey worked tirelessly to create a musical masterpiece on one of Irelands greatest stages. Based on the Roald Dahl book ‘Matilda’ it featured songs and dramatic excerpts such as ‘Naughty’ and the unforgettable ’Revolting Children’.

The show was put together by the schools director Lily MacMonagle, along with endless work from Choreographers Eabha Healy and Linda Fitzgerald, Vocal Coach Makaela Crowley and Drama Assistant Rachel Griffin. Superb performances were made by all the students, but a special mention has to be given to Ms Trunchbull played by Tommy O’Connor Rathmore, Ms Honey played by Elisha Rose Gabriel and The

Wormwood family played by Amelie Hussey, Leo Riordan and Dave Mc Carthy and the four ‘Matilda’ characters who grew up through the show were perfectly portrayed by four different students, Fiadh Hayes, Abbie Quill, Clíona Kelly and Kara Keane. Roles were also shared between other cast members allowing more chances to be given to students on stage.

There were some outstanding vocalists throughout the whole show, with a mention to Frankie Tracey, Lucy Moran and Evie Spillane. All the students performed in the show, from the MACTots (aged 4-6) right through to the MAC Seniors (aged 16) and it was a chorus that wouldn’t have been out of place in the West End.

The MACademy would like to thank the students of St Brigid’s and St Oliver’s who created a fantastic visual on stage with all of their artwork and to all of the volunteers who helped make the show a success.

Tesco to reduce prices away Home

This week Tesco Ireland has announced that more than 700 products will see prices reduced as part of a new pricecut campaign.

The retailer said that customers can expect to make savings on a "widerange of Tesco own-brand products and brands bought week-in, week-out" with an average decrease of 10%.

Finance Minister Michael McGrath has hailed the move as a "turning point." It comes as figures released last month show the cost of food rose 13.1% in the year to April 2023. Food inflation was almost double that of the general rise in the Consumer Price Index in the past year of 7.2% according to the Central

Statistics Office (CSO).

Speaking after the announcement, Minister McGrath said, "These reductions are very good news for consumers, and I think will be warmly welcomed. Every-

body has seen the significant spike in prices over the last 18 months or so. So, it could be a significant turning point in relation to grocery prices for consumers.

State to pay €1.5m to EU amid lack of beds for asylum seekers

The State will pay €1.5 million to a European relocation system because Ireland does not have the space to accommodate an additional 350 international protection applicants.

The State previously agreed to accept an extra 350 international protection applicants as part the solitary agreement, which sees international protection applicants relocated in EU member states but instead a €1.5 million financial contribution which will be made to meet the State’s commitments under an asylum seeker relocation system.

The two Ministers will tell the Cabinet that due to the large unforeseen increase in the number of people fleeing Ukraine and international protection applicants, the State’s capacity to provide accommodation is under “severe pressure”.

Ireland is currently providing accommodation for over 86,000 people which includes over 65,000 from Ukraine and the remainder made up of international protection applicants.

Annual inflation rate slows to 6.6% in May

The annual rate of inflation slowed to 6.6% in May, compared to 7.2% the previous month, new figures from the Central Statistics Office show this week. The rate of goods inflation has slowed to 2.9% while the price of services has risen to 9.5%.

The pace of inflation across the economy has gradually slowed but prices are still going up. Prices rose by 0.3% in May, bringing the annual rate to 6.6%, the CSO said today.

Core inflation, which strips out energy and food, was higher than the headline rate for the first time recording an annual rate of 6.8%.

Pope Francis' operation on hernia completed 'without complications'

Pope Francis underwent an operation this week on a painful abdominal hernia, which was completed without complications within three hours.

However, it revived concerns over the 86-year-old’s increasingly fragile health. The pope was suffering from a hernia that was “causing recurrent, painful and worsening” symptoms, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said.

Francis always retains all his powers as pontiff even while unconscious.

Scientists find ‘lost world’ in billion-year-old Australian rock

Scientists have discovered a “lost world” of ancient organisms in billion-year-old rocks from northern Australia that they say could change the world’s understanding of humans’ earliest ancestors. The microscopic creatures, known as Protosterol Biota, are part of a family of organisms called eukaryotes and lived in Earth’s waterways about 1.6 billion years ago, according to the researchers.

Modern forms of eukaryotes include

fungi, plants, animals and single-celled organisms such as amoebae.

Scientist Jochen Brocks, who made the discovery, said the Protosterol Biota were more complex than bacteria and presumably larger, although it is unknown what they looked like.

“We believe they may have been the first predators on Earth, hunting and devouring bacteria,” the professor said in a statement.

iPhones have a selection of snooze-friendly sounds - perfect for listening to when you first hop into bed. Users can choose from: Balanced noise, Bright noise, Dark noise, Ocean, Rain and Stream.

Research shows these certain types of sounds can help people fall asleep faster - and remain in a deep slumber. One study found 80 per cent of new-

born babies dozed off within five minutes when listening to white noise - sound that contains all frequencies across the spectrum of audible sound in equal measure.

This compared to only 25 per cent in silence.

Another report discovered adults fell asleep 38 per cent quicker when exposed to white noise.

Niall Horan has said he was "afraid" to go out after being "chased" by fans while touring with One Direction.

"We'd go to countries and never see a second of it - it was hotel, venue, plane, same again," the Irish singer-songwriter said.

"We couldn't get out the door. If you went out in the car, you'd be seen and chased.

"I understand why it was going on, but it gave me a thing where, when I came back to London, I would be afraid to go out. There was a period where I actually couldn't."

The boy band was put on indefinite hiatus six years after it formed in 2010 and became one of the biggest pop groups in the world, with five albums and four world tours.

Horan, who has launched a solo career with hit songs Slow Hands and Heaven, said he is "excited" and "nervous" to be releasing his third album The Show.

Fassbender’s Le Mans diary

The greatest long distance motor race in the world takes place in France this weekend.

Fossa’s Hollywood A-lister Michael Fassbender is contesting the legendary 24 Hour of Le Mans for the second time.

The storied circuit south of the city with its 150,000 inhabitants consists mainly of public roads. Normally, hundreds of trucks and cars drive over the legendary Mulsanne Straight every day on their way from Le Mans to Tours.

The fast Porsche curves are both famous and notorious: high speeds and narrow

run-off zones pose special challenges and ensure spectacular race action. The French long-distance classic is regarded as critical for the world championship season:

The World Endurance Championship awards double points for placings at Le Mans – for example, the winner gets 50 instead of 25 world championship points.

Art exhibition to open in Kenmare next week

Kenmare Butter Market art centre in Kenmare is hosting a monthlong exhibition featuring the work of artist Mary Duffy.

The title of this exhibition is ‘From Left Field’ aptly describes the life of the. A life that has been lived off-centre, offbeat, surprising everyone, especially herself.

The work in this exhibition is surprising as well. Spanning early years absorbed in painting toworking with video, photography and performance, and later coming full circle and back to painting. This collection has it all.

Duffy is an artist who likes to employ all means available to her. Unafraid of change and willing to embrace all kinds of unusual media and subjects, her work is vibrant, energetic, colourful and in places highly textured.

Some of her work uses acrylic and portrays a watery world where land and sea meet near the rare fen habitat where she lives.

Other piece are painted in a mixture of

cold wax medium, oil paint and a variety of added substances, from ashes to aluminium, from beach sand to chalk and flint.

A significant number of the pieces reflect the marine environment and visitors will not be surprised when they learn that this artist is a keen and competitive sailor. Her fascination with painting the ocean and harbours demonstrate an intimate knowledge of land and water. Duffy has mounted solo shows in Courthouse Arts Centre in Tinahely, Signal Arts Centre, Bray, both in County Wicklow as well as Dungarvan County Waterford and the Bold Gallery in Galway.

Her photographic and performance work has been exhibited across the world including the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, and the National Museum of Photography in Tokyo. It is referenced in many publications including ‘Beauty in Art 1750 – 2000’ and more recently Irish Art 1920-2020: Perspectives on change by Catherine Marshall and Yvonne Scott.

bender said: “Le Mans outshines everything. The 24 hours on this demanding route are a single challenge. As a driver, you can’t make any mistakes, because it’s very difficult to make up for a lost lap. In order to survive in Le Mans, you have to be prepared to push your limits even under the most difficult conditions.”

Dingle Harbour the most scenic electric charge spot in Ireland

The most scenic electric vehicle charging spots in Ireland have been revealed and Slea Head in Kerry is number one.

Polestar, the Swedish electric vehicle brand, used Instagram hashtag data and a team of experts to compile a list of the most scenic places to charge your electric vehicle.

The charging point located at at the seafront on Dingle Harbour topped the list, with a stunning view of the Dingle harbour. It overlooks the water with a breathtaking view of the mountains that surround Dingle, which potential travellers can take in.

To gather the data Polestar curated a list of the specific coordinates and loca-

tions of every charging point in Ireland and then cross-referenced it with how many Instagram hashtags each location had to build a shortlist of top contenders.

A team of experts used this data to manually trawl through each of the locations on the list, reviewing the view from the charging point location and creating the definitive list.

Kieran Campbell, Market Lead - Polestar, Ireland said: “Over the Bank Holiday weekend, families took to the roads to enjoy scenic staycations across the country.

“With the charging infrastructure in Ireland growing, there are already some incredible locations to take in the view while you’re plugged in.”

2023 Ballyfinnane Hill Climb to

be launched on June 12

The build-up to the return of hill climb racing to the Kingdom is beginning to gather pace as planning is now at an advanced stage for the commemorative event which will take place on July 16, 120 years after the first closed road motorsport event took place in the same village outside Tralee.

The various pieces of the jigsaw are now coming together for the event, which is being run by Kerry Motor Club in Association with the Ballyfinnane Community Hall Association.

A large field of racing cars, single-seaters and rally cars is expected once entries

open in the coming days.

The Shanty Bar in Ballyfinnane has been the centre point to the planning process, with a large number of local residents in attendance at planning meetings for the event. The sense of community around the event is clear, as the locals are roll-

ing up their sleeves to help the club and event organisers with every aspect of organisation.

The 2023 Ballyfinnane Hillclimb will be officially launched on Monday, June 12 at the Shanty Bar in Ballyfinnane, at 7pm and everyone is welcome to attend.

For some, a hill climb event is totally new and on the night, various members of the organising committee will be on hand to explain the logistics and how a hill climb event works. There will be some unique photo opportunities to be had as some single-seater racing cars will be parked

outside the bar on the night.

Speaking on the launch, the 2023 Ballyfinnane Hillclimb Clerk of the Course Sean Moriarty said “I would like to invite everyone to come out to The Shanty Bar in Ballyfinnane on Monday June 12 to get a sense of what this project is all about. The local community in Ballyfinnane have bought into the project and their help has proven invaluable to the organising of the event. It will be great to see some familiar and some new faces at the launch. It is a great opportunity to see first-hand the work that has been done and also a chance go see some single seater cars up close. I really can’t wait.”

Entries are due to open for the event in the coming days with a full list of regulations being posted on the ‘Sportity’ App using the password ‘Kerryhill23’

The Stock Market is Undefeated

The Stats Speak for Themselves

People often ask me, ‘What’s next for the stock market?’ and the honest answer is - I haven’t a clue.

Despite over a decade of studying the market, the irrational short-term moves are impossible to predict. There is an endless list of unknown unknowns to consider. Claiming you know exactly what’s around the corner is naivety, not intelligence.

But the thing is, you don’t need to know what’s next.

It’s Not as ‘Risky’ as You Think.

On a daily basis, stocks are up 53% of the time – little better than a coin toss. Not exactly the guaranteed odds you’re looking for when investing your life savings.

This short-term uncertainty has often acted as a deterrent for investors but let’s zoom out a bit and look at the bigger picture.

History has shown the longer the holding period, the greater the probability of positive returns.

On an annualized basis, the S&P 500 has returned positive returns in 70 of its 94

years, producing positive annual returns 74% of the time.

The further you extend this timeline, the greater the probability of positive performance. Rolling 10-year returns have been positive 94.1% of the time, while rolling 14-year returns have been positive 100% of the time.

Simply put, the longer you stay invested, the lower the probability of losing money. There has been no 14-year or longer period when the S&P 500 has declined in value, and that is even before counting dividends.

Statistically speaking, for long-term investors, the probability of success sits firmly in your favour.

Stocks Go Where Profits Go

With that said, just because stocks have gone up in the past doesn’t mean this is guaranteed to happen in the future. But it’s not like the stock market has gone up for no reason. The stock market has historically gone up because the profits made by the companies that make up the stock market have increased.

To quote the legendary investor Peter Lynch

Basic corporate profits have grown about 8% a year historically. So, corporate profits double about every nine years. The stock market ought to double about every nine years. So, I think — the market is about 3,800 today, or 3,700 — I’m pretty convinced the next 3,800 points will be up; it won’t be down. The next 500 points, the next 600 points — I don’t know which way they’ll go. So, the market ought to double in the next eight or nine years. They’ll double again in eight or nine years after that. Because profits go up 8% a year, and stocks will follow. That’s all there is to it.

He said this in 1994 in reference to the Dow Jones Industrial Average which was 3,797 at the time. 28.5 years later it is 33,500. this represents an annual growth rate of almost exactly 8%. Pretty remarkable stuff.

You will never be able to predict the exact path forward for stocks, prices will fluctuate in the short term, but markets will trend higher over time in line with earnings growth. In other words, stocks go where profits go.

If you believe that companies will continue to innovate and find new ways to

generate profits over time, you need to allocate a portion of your future earnings to these companies. It really is that simple.

I have spent the last few weeks writing a book covering all the basics. This stepby-step guide includes how to set up your brokerage account, how to pick your first investments and how to value a company.

I will be officially launching it in midJune. To receive a free copy, sign up for my newsletter by scanning the QR code above or go to www.theislandinvestor. com.

DNG estate agents goes global

The DNG Group has announced that it has signed an exclusivity agreement with Hamptons Estate Agents in Ireland which will provide an international platform for DNG clients’ property sales.

Hamptons International Division has one of the largest real estate networks in the world, with a global reach incorporating over 7,000 affiliate estate agent offices.

The affiliation between DNG, one of Ireland’s leading property service providers, and the established international brand of Hamptons allows DNG to advertise their prime properties on the Hamptons International website and to co-brand the sale of prime properties from across Ireland including many of their new housing schemes.

DNG Chief Executive Keith Lowe said: “This new affiliation will provide an international platform for our premium

residential property sales and offers unsurpassed exposure for clients’ properties on a global platform. Hamptons International sell some of the finest properties worldwide, and DNG is delighted to be able to offer our prime homes to this international audience”.

He continued “Many of the world’s leading multinational companies have significant operations in Ireland and as a result there is considerable demand from expats and employees taking up residency here for suitable homes. Our new affiliation with Hamptons provides us with the best platform to market premium homes across the globe.”

Hamptons Managing Director Lesley Cairns commented, “We are delighted to have DNG as our new Irish affiliateDNG is one of Ireland’s leading Property Service Providers, with a network that extends across the entire country. DNG is a great fit for the international arm of

Hamptons and we are delighted to partner with them in this joint venture.”

Hamptons has 92 offices in England and DNG has 80 offices across its network in Ireland, meaning a combined network across the UK and Ireland of 172 offices with a further 7,000 affiliate offices worldwide all feeding properties into the international network.

DNG Ted Healy Killarney has only last week been named Best DNG Branch Office for 2023 at the DNG National Conference & Awards, which took place in The Curragh Racecourse. The awards celebrate the hard work carried out across the DNG Network and recognise the successes of individuals within the organisation, rewarding high standards of service, business acumen and professionalism that are demonstrated in each DNG Branch.

New herbal and bio-energy therapy clinic open in town

Have you ever wondered what happens when you deal with an emotionally charged situation or experience high levels of stress daily?

Your mind sends alarm signals to your body which must adapt to this emergency mode.

Muscles tense up, heart beats faster, vessels get compressed, blood pressure rises, body retains water etc. Most of us subject our bodies to this emergency mode without being aware of it.

Irina Sharapova MH has just opened a new Herbal Medicine and Bio-Energy Therapy clinic at Horan’s Health Store on Beech Road by appointment each Friday.

Both Herbal Medicine and Bio-Energy Therapy, support the body’s natural ability to heal.

During a herbal consultation the therapist suggests necessary corrections to the client’s diet and lifestyle aiming at reducing the elements that contribute to inflammation, stiffness and pain, and increasing the elements that aid healing. Then they prepare herbal remedies specific to the client. Client’s medications are also examined to ensure that there are no conflicts with the herbal treatment.

Herbs support healing by relaxing the

body and improving sleep; they are used to treat various ailments from digestive and reproductive issues to insomnia and migraines.

Bio-Energy therapy is a complementary non-contact treatment that helps to release tension from the body caused by injuries, traumas or stress.

During a Bio-Energy session the therapist scans the client’s body for signals that indicate that the energy is not flowing smoothly – these are the areas that have reacted to the Client’s emotions of fear, worry, hurt, anger, sadness etc. The therapist “clears out” these areas until the energy flow feels smooth. Bio-Energy is helpful in the treatment of physical and emotional pain and other ailments.

It is suitable for people who do not like massages and other treatments that are performed directly on the body.

Disclaimer: Alternative therapies are not substitutes for medical advice. For further information or to schedule an appointment please contact Irina at 086 9878941 or via email at herbsandtherapy@gmail.com.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT & 1ST ANNIVERSARY O’LEARY

In loving memory of Tom O’Leary

Who passed away on 11th June 2022.

As we lovingly remember Tom, who is so deeply missed by Bríd, his loving wife, best friend and adored by Myles, his son, on this his first anniversary, we would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all who supported us in the sudden loss of Tom.

Tom was a remarkable man, a wonderful husband, a fantastic dad and a best friend. Dependable, loving, kind and caring. Tom was the definition of pure strength, resilience and the most fearless person we know. He was extremely proud - yet humble. He was fierce - yet gentle. He was strong willed - yet compassionate. He was hardworking and honest. He was loyal and protective. He was loving, kind, caring, funny and sociable. Being a dad came so easy to Tom, he was a natural. He dedicated his world to us, right up to the very end, we were his number one priority and we knew it.

I will be forever grateful for the way you helped me raise Myles, and the lessons I know Myles has learnt from watching you, simply being you. You will forever live in our hearts and thoughts. We’ll cherish the memories we shared with you, forever. You were ‘Our Everything!”. Tom gave us one of life’s most priceless gifts, and that is knowing we can look back on our life together and know we were deeply loved. We knew we had everything we ever needed because we could see it in your eyes, the love you had for Myles and I.

In the days and weeks after Tomi’s passing, some people sent cards, and lots of people spent time with us. It was such a relief to be surrounded by people who care.

Thank you to everyone who sent cards, enrolments, online condolences, phone calls, floral tributes and all expressions of kindness and support. Thank you to everyone who joined us in person and by livestream for Tom’s requiem mass.

Thank You to Seán Coffey, Bridget Lucey, Hugh Rudden and all the teachers and staff of St. Brendan’s College, Killarney for you kindness and help in accommodating Myles in completing his Leaving Cert exams, during this most difficult time - for that we thank you!

Thank You to Mike and Mary O’Shea of O’Shea’s Funeral home, for your kindness, guidance and professionalism.

Thank you to Fr. Niall Howard, Canon Tom Looney and Fr. Paddy O’Donoghue, who concelebrated Tom’s mass, for your kind words of comfort and compassion and help in guiding Myles and I during our most difficult time.

Thank You Myles for your wonderfully articulate and passionate eulogy for your dad. I know he was so proud of you every day, but he would have been so proud to see you have such strength.

Thank you to all my family for your contributions during the funeral, and for all your help and wonderful care since Tom’s passing.

Thank you to Finbarr and Stephen - Friends For Life.

Thank You to Tom’s six brothers who helped Myles shoulder the coffin, bringing Tom to his final resting place in Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery.

Thank you to Marcus and team of the Killarney Park Hotel. Myles and I would like to thank you all.

As it is impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our gratitude to you all. The Holy Sacrifice of Tom’s mass will be offered for your intentions.

-So “This is it”-

Our book has closed, but it’s filled with so many memories and special moments.

We’re always going to love you and we’ll never forget all that you did for us.

-Always and ForeverBríd and Myles. xx

Five on the bounce for unstoppable Celts

FINAL Killarney Celtic 3 Killarney Athletic 1 Mounthawk Park

Reigning champions prevail in all-Killarney league final

The kingpins of Kerry soccer are celebrating yet another league title after seeing off a resilient Killarney Athletic side in last Friday’s decider.

Celtic have been unstoppable since Athletic’s sole Premier A triumph of 2017 and this latest victory seals a remarkable five-in-a-row. It also makes it three consecutive league final wins over their fiercest rivals, a brilliant record that will surely go down as one of the proudest runs in the club’s history.

Athletic went into the match as slight underdogs and they left themselves with a mountain to climb when they gave up possession and allowed Witness Odirile to sneak in for a well-taken goal in the second minute of play. A goalkeeping error after 12 minutes made life

even more difficult – Wayne Sparling was left with the easiest of tasks when Athletic failed to clear their lines.

The Blues have shown plenty of spirit throughout the campaign and to their huge credit they fought their way back into contention. On the hour-mark Eoin Moynihan’s cross/shot was saved and as Athletic looked to pounce on the rebound, a Celtic player handled the ball. A penalty was awarded and Cian Tobin converted it at the second attempt (the Celtic keeper saved the first effort but was adjudged to have stepped off his line). With 30 minutes still to play, Stuart Templeman’s side were in with a real shot, but try as they might they were unable to tie things up.

A nervy period for Celtic came to an end when another

Athletic mistake gifted them a penalty. Cathal O’Shea stepped up in the 87th minute and coolly tucked it away to make it 3-1, and the Celts had two hands on the trophy.

Unfortunately, some unruly scenes on the pitch and on the touchline followed but thankfully it all blew over by the time the final whistle sounded.

Captain John McDonagh accepted the silverware on behalf of his teammates. They can now look forward to Sunday’s Greyhound Bar Cup final against Dynamos, a match that kicks off at Mounthawk Park at 4pm on Sunday. Five league titles in a row is sweet, but five doubles in a row would be even sweeter.

Celtic girls through to last four of Ireland

The Killarney Celtic U17 girls team are just one game away from an All-Ireland final after Sunday’s incredibly hardfought victory over Aisling Annacotty of Limerick.

Celtic found themselves a goal ahead after 14 minutes of this National Cup quarter-final tie when Eve Culhane latched on to Aideen O’Brien’s flicked pass and applied the finish.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the hosts equalised six minutes later, and they struck again before half-time to make it 2-1.

The hill became even steeper for the Killarney girls not long after the break when

Aisling made it 3-1, but this setback spurred them back into action. They dominated the match thereafter, bagging four goals in succession via Katie Doe, Katie Foster, O’Brien and Maeve Courtney.

In the end, the 5-3 scoreline didn’t flatter the visitors, who played superbly in the searing heat.

After resounding National Cup victories over Riverside and Macroom in the earlier rounds, and now this latest comeback win over a strong Aisling Annacotty team, these young Celts can face into the semi-final with optimism. Well done to the players and to their coaches Alan O’Sullivan, Dave McIndoe and Tanya McCormick.

NEXT ROUND: The Killarney Celtic U17 girls have advanced to the semi-final stage of the National Cup.

SOCCER: The Mastergeeha senior team who were crowned Premier Division B champions in Tralee on Saturday night. Geeha beat Classic FC 2-0.

PRESIDENT'S PRIZE: The youngest participant in the Ross Golf Club President's Prize, Michael Barrett (fourth in the gents' competition), with seniors winner (over 70) Tadhg McCarthy. Also pictured are Captain John Ivory and President Michael J Casey.

AUCTION: Members of the Kilcummin GAA senior teams with signed and framed jerseys that will be up for auction via a club fundraiser that will run until June 24.

‘Best, McGrath, Beckham…

I saw them all’

In Part 2 of his interview with Eamonn Fitzgerald, Fr John Ahern recalls some of the great Irish players who lined out with his beloved Manchester United

We all have sad memories of that awful day that shocked Manchester and the world in 1958. Briefly, for the benefit of younger readers, I will summarise. On February 6, 1958 the chartered plane carrying the Manchester United players, supporters and journalists home from a European Cup game crashed after refuelling in Munich. The accident claimed the lives of 23 people, including eight Manchester United players.

“All of those survivors from Munich have since passed away, the last being Harry Gregg and Sir Matt Busby,” Fr John says. “Busby played a key role in the reconstruction of the Busby Babes and the new Man Utd, phoenix-like, out of the ashes of Munich, to become the all-conquering side of the 60s/70s. Busby was the catalyst.”

Having Old Trafford within his ministry area must have given Fr John great access to the grounds, the big names and to games.

“I saw all those great players of different eras, like Law, Best, McGrath, Moran, Neville, Irwin, Beckham, Robson, the Dunnes, of course, and many more. Johnny Giles was gone at that stage. On Mondays we met great United players in the Devi Hume golf club.”

Talk to me, Fr John, about some Irish Man United players of particular interest. Start with George Best, my favourite United player.

“I can see why he would be your favour-

ite. He was very special indeed even at a very young age on that great United team. The way he could dribble was legendary. What control he had with both feet, even in the depths of winter on muddy pitches and opposing defenders going with the sliding tackles. His sense of timing and control was miraculous, learned under the streetlamp lights in Belfast where you had to be deft, smart and able to swerve to keep the ball away from neighbouring children.

“He transferred that to Old Trafford and elsewhere. Who can ever forget him in the European Cup?”

Another great he saw in action, was Kevin Moran, who also excelled with the Dubs in football.

“Kevin Moran was a natural competitor who gave it everything in any sport he chose. He never shirked a tackle or a header. He put his head in where others would withdraw, the kind of player you would want on your team. He was al -

ways comfortable on the ball, always driving on. A true warrior.”

And the enigmatic Roy Keane of course. Was the Mayfield native as odd as he appears to us in public?

“True, you got what you saw from Roy. He was his own man, always playing with fierce drive and determination, expecting everyone on the team to give 100% to support his guaranteed 110%. Somewhat strange in public, never tolerating slackers and a mighty driving force in that engine of the great United team of his era.

“If things were not right he would say so. I also saw the private side of Roy’s life. He always kept his family life private and shielded his family from the glare of publicity. His children attended the local Catholic school and he never missed important family occasions, liturgical or lay. He was the dutiful parent at the parent-teacher meetings and not the public brash Keano.

Of course, he does great charity work especially with the dogs for the visually impaired. He also does a lot of other voluntary work for other charities that people do not know about and he does not seek the limelight. It’s not so long

ago since he was in Kerry to support a very worthy cause.”

Fr Ahern was a great man to get tickets for sports aficionados here at home. I know that over the years Kerry players like Mikey, Powery, Seánie, Ogie, Bomber, Jacko, Gooch and many more can thank him.

“Yes, those were great sports heroes who enjoyed the soccer experience as spectators and we saw that sport transcended all codes when we got them into the hospitality suite after the games. These people understand each other irrespective of the code. Sure, they met them all there. They were great occasions.”

Fr John left Manchester in 1973 to work on the Missions in Peru until 1982. “Soccer was very important in that country also. I kept in touch with sport, like in 1977 when Liverpool were deemed unbeatable but United denied them the treble. I watched that game in a satellite tracking station in Lurin in the company of the late Fr John O’Connell, a Columban priest from Béal na Díoga. You know that place well, just out beyond Barradubh.”

Fr Ahern is retired in his native Firies, but like so many other retired priests here in Kerry and elsewhere he is still helping out with masses, sacraments, funerals and other liturgical ceremonies. Where would we be without them?

Saol fada romhat, Fr John. It was a joy, as always, to be in your company.

Classy Clifford too hot for Cork to handle

David Clifford underlined his status as the best footballer in the country by putting in another Man-of-the-Match performance as Kerry held on for a hard-fought victory at a sun-soaked Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday.

The Fossa man was well-marshalled by Daniel O’Mahony but he was sensational nevertheless, kicking 1-5 in total - including four of Kerry’s last five scores of the game.

With Cork substitutes Steven Sherlock and Eoghan McSweeney to the fore in the second half, the hosts came within a kick of a ball of causing an upset, but Kerry just

about held on to secure two crucial points.

It was an improved display following the no-show against Mayo, but further improvements will be necessary if they want to see July.

SEÁNIE

The form of Seánie O’Shea was a hot button topic in the build up to this game but he made fools of the doubters by racking up four points in the first half alone. He opened his account with a third-minute free.

Clifford notched his first after selling O’Mahony a trademark dummy to make it two-nil with five minutes on the clock, but Cork replied quickly through Chris Óg Jones. O’Shea then added two neat points from play, either side of a well-taken score by Cork’s industrious half forward Brian O’Driscoll.

With Kerry’s defence on top, the visitors were able to build up a four-point lead as Adrian Spillane, O’Shea and Paudie Clifford all found the target between the 16th and 20th minutes.

Seán Powter had half a goal chance in the 21st minute but his prodded shot was diverted over the bar by a Kerry defender. The scoring stopped for the bones of 10 minutes thereafter and it only resumed when the younger Clifford took matters into his own hands and sent a huge, booming kick over the bar from outside the 45-metre line. Hurley swung over another free in stoppage time but Kerry had the last word when Dara Moynihan fielded a long Shane Ryan kickout and fed Paudie Clifford, who raced away from the Cork defence and tapped over from right in front of the posts. That left the scoreline at Kerry 0-9 Cork 0-5 at the break.

BLISTERING

Whatever John Cleary said at half-time certainly had the desired effect. A blistering start to the period saw the Rebels cut the deficit to a single point within just seven minutes. Scores by Hurley (two frees), Killian O’Hanlon and Powter got the home crowd fired up; an O’Shea free in between was all the Kingdom could muster during this spell.

To a large extent the game hinged on a massive refereeing decision in the 47th minute. A combination of Tom O’Sullivan and Jack Barry forced a turnover around the middle of the pitch and when O’Sullivan fed Paul Geaney, the veteran inside forward had a goal on his mind.

As Geaney attempted to cut inside and make an angle for a shot, he was hauled down by the retreating Powter, just outside the large rectangle.

After consulting with his umpires, referee David Gough decided that the Cork player had intentionally denied a clear goalscoring opportunity. He issued a black card and awarded a penalty, to the disbelief of everyone in red and white. The rule in question is rarely cited, which led to much of the confusion and annoyance on the Cork side, but Gough was technically correct.

David Clifford stepped up and converted the spot kick, sending Micheál Martin diving to his right as he slotted it to the keeper’s left.

Hurley (free) made it a three-point game before Clifford kicked a free that he won himself, plus another catch-and-shoot beauty that gave Kerry a five-point lead with 16 minutes to go. That should have been that, really, but Cork, to their credit, came back with a vengeance. McSweeney pointed with his first touch and another Hurley free was quickly followed by a great score by Sherlock. The home side now trailed by two with four to play. The natives smelled blood.

Kerry v Cork Cork 0-15 Kerry 1-14

David Clifford took matters into his own hands again to end his team’s 14-minute scoreless run, but Sherlock made it 0-14 to 1-13 when his shot for goal cleared the crossbar.

In the 72nd minute, a high, probing ball – very similar to the one that led to Mark Keane’s goal in 2020 – was dealt with by a combination of Shane Ryan and the superb Jason Foley. Tom O’Sullivan widened the gap to three and Cork could only manufacture another shot for a point, which McSweeney converted. Then substitute Micheál Burns called for and claimed Ryan’s final kickout to seal a vital win.

If Kerry can beat Louth in Round 3, they will probably finish second in the group, and secure a home preliminary quarter-final in the process.

Kerry are not good enough to retain the Sam Maguire

Kerry and Cork locked horns in a local derby on Saturday last.

Kerry, the All-Ireland champions who have hammered Cork in recent years, were expected to set aside that dreadful display here in the Park against Mayo. That was just a bad day at the office and they would kick on in style against lowly Cork. Not so; an upset was on the cards as Cork closed down the Kerry players and were sailing until the penalty. It was a black card, but was it a penalty? John Cleary was furious, labelling it a “shocking decision”. Jack O’Connor

kicked for touch. Lucky Jack, once more.

I was so happy like all Kerry folk to see Kerry win the 2022 All-Ireland to end the mini famine. However, in my analysis in later editions of this publication, I wrote that in my opinion this was the worst Kerry team to win the Sam Maguire. Plenty of howls of opposition from many Kerry supporters, but that was my analysis then, and now.

Kerry won because Jack wisely plugged the hole in the centre of defence, where Morley prevented the dyke bursting out and allowing Shane Walsh and Damien

Comer to score goals like the ones that wrecked Kerry previously. Lady Luck was unbelievably generous, especially that miraculous Late, Late Free by Seánie O’Shea. Without that great kick, I believe that Dublin would have beaten Kerry in extra time and won the All-Ireland.

Let us never forget that Jack has the best footballer in Ireland. Not alone that, but from following Kerry football for 70 years, I have seen none better than David Clifford. In my view Clifford is the best Kerry football star of all time. My view of Kerry is a personal viewpoint, as with all opinions expressed in this weekly sports column. It is just one opinion; many will disagree.

On Saturday David stepped into the

breach to lift yet another mediocre team display, despite being always doubly marked and often by even more than that. Kerry folk need to be down on their knees praying he will escape injury. Without him, Kerry have no hope of winning the All-Ireland. With him they have a chance against Derry, Dublin, Galway, Mayo and Tyrone, the most likely teams to emerge from the pools.

I don’t rate this team as good enough to retain the Sam Maguire. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to eat humble pie.

Next, Kerry play Louth at a neutral venue and we should have one more opportunity of seeing the reigning champions here in the Fitzgerald Stadium.

Kicked 1-5 despite being well marked by Daniel O’Mahony. Showed great leadership.

Are Kerry a one-man team? Let’s look at the numbers

Let’s analyse the numbers to see just how reliant The Kingdom are on the reigning Footballer of the Year.

So far in 2023 Clifford has scored 47 of Kerry's 195 points (24.1%) in league and championship. In 2022 he scored 25.2% of Kerry’s points, down from his percentage of 29% in 2021. Back in 2020 it was 28.8%; in 2019 it was 12.6%; and in 2018, his debut year, it was 21.3%.

Clifford has scored 24 goals and 234 points in his 57 league and championship appearances for Kerry. That’s a total score of 306 so he is averaging 5.4 points per game. Remarkably, he has scored every single time he has taken to the field.

He has been the team's top scorer 23 times. Separately, he has been the joint top scorer seven times. His numbers are certainly impressive and Clifford is unquestionably Kerry’s best player, but does that make Kerry a "one-man team"?

We would need to compare Clifford's data against the game’s other elite forwards to get a full picture but, just as an example, Cillian O'Connor scored 42.5% of Mayo's points in 2016. Clifford’s highest percentage for a season is 29%.

Shane McGuigan has scored 37.1% of Derry’s points in the 2023 championship. Clifford has scored 34% of Kerry’s total.

Ruairí Murphy (HT) 6.0

Stephen O’Brien (61) 6.0

Tony Brosnan (62) 5.8

Barry Dan O’Sullivan (65) 5.9

Micheál Burns (72) 5.9

Since he made his debut in 2018, someone else has been Kerry's top scorer (or joint top scorer alongside Clifford) in 34 of the 57 games he has played (59.6%).

Clifford has been Kerry's overall top scorer over the course of a championship campaign just once (2018) – although he was also joint top scorer in 2020 when

he and Killian Spillane both kicked 0-4 in Kerry's only championship match.

Meanwhile, Seán O'Shea has been Kerry's top scorer in the championship three times (2019, 2021, 2022). In total, 77.3% of the points that Kerry have registered since Clifford's debut in 2018 have been scored by his teammates.

(Naturally Clifford has also contributed to Kerry's scoring via assists. Unfortunately this data does not exist.)

Kerry’s record in games in which David Clifford did not play is P10 W8 L2.

Clifford is a phenomenal player - possibly the best ever - but several of his teammates are legitimate stars in their own right.

Jason Foley, Tom O'Sullivan, Seán O'Shea and Paudie Clifford are elite footballers who would start for most, if not all, other teams in the country.

David Clifford is massively important to Kerry and it goes without saying that they would be worse off without him. He is a generational talent and a certified match-winner. Is there any team that could achieve the same success if you took a potential GOAT out of their line-up?

However, to claim that Kerry would be "nothing" without David Clifford is over the top. I believe doing so slightly overestimates his scoring contributions, and greatly underestimates the rest of the team.

SUBSTITUTES Shane RYAN 7.2 17/21 kickouts were successful. Came and dealt with a dangerous high ball at the end. 1 Jason FOLEY 7.5 Dominated Brian Hurley (0-0 from play) and snuffed out several Cork attacks. 3 Tom O’SULLIVAN 6.8 Went through a pile of ball. Scored Kerry’s final point. 4 Graham O’SULLIVAN 6.3 Hasn’t quite been able to replicate his excellent form of 2022 just yet. 2 Tadhg MORLEY 6.2 Played a more orthodox marking role on Deane. Wasn’t involved in any major plays. 6 Paul MURPHY 6.7 Operated as a sweeper in the first half. Had his hands full with Sherlock in the second. 5 Diarmuid O’CONNOR 6.5 Excellent in the first half. Had a nice catch and passed the ball well. Faded after HT. 8 Paudie CLIFFORD 8.6 A typically industrious performance. Registered two points, one with either foot. 13 Seánie O’SHEA 7.1 otched four points in the opening 20 minutes.

Killarney Celtic won their 5th Premier A title in a row after defeating local rivals Killarney Athletic in the league final played at Mounthawk Park. Celtic were ahead when John McDonagh released Wayne Sparling on the left, Sparling found Witness Odirile who slotted home from close range. Celtic were 2 up after a loose pass in the Athletic rearguard allowed Wayne Sparling to score. Athletic came back into the game and scored from a retaken penalty in the 2nd half. However Celtic weathered the storm and secured the title when Cathal O’Shea calmly slotted home in the closing minutes. Captain John McDonagh once again accepted the League Trophy to the delight of the Celtic squad and supporters. Well done to the management and players. Next up is the replay of the Greyhound Bar Cup Final next Sunday.

FAI WOMEN’S U17 CUP: Quarter Final - Aisling Annacotty 3 Killarney Celtic 5 (Aideen O’Brien, Eve Culhane, Katie Foster, Katie Doe, Maeve Courtney). MEK Galaxy

GIRLS: U12 Girls Cup Final – MEK Galaxy 1 St Brendan’s Park 0. Well done to our U12 girls who beat an extremely good St Brendan’s Park Fc to clinch our 2nd Schoolgirls Cup of the season. It was a tough game, with both teams playing excellent football. An early goal by Ava Harty was the difference between the 2 teams. Although Saoirse Teehan in goals had a big hand in keeping Park at bay, picking up Player of the Match. A huge thanks to Danny and the Park team for an excellent game. Like ourselves, getting to the last 16 of the National Cup was a huge achievement. And they also won Division 1. So, well done to management and players. Also, thanks to Park as a club for hosting the finals. Thanks to referee Adrian Quirke and his team for doing a great job, letting a fantastic game flow. Well done to our girls and the parents for their support throughout the season. And to coaches Tony, Jo and Nuala for their time and effort. Killarney Legion GAA

SENIOR MEN: Ballymacelligott joined us at the top of the Division 1 table by virtue of a Sunday afternoon win over Milltown/ Castlemaine. Having lost their opening two fixtures, they have now won six on the trot, earning twelve points. Five wins and two draws from seven games sees Peter Keane’s charges neck and neck with Ballymac, albeit having played one game less. Dr Crokes are in the slipstream on eleven points and for now it seems to be between the top three. Our latest win, on

a summer Friday night in Direen, was over Kilcummin who we will again meet in the Intermediate Championship. Our neighbours were shy a few regulars but nevertheless made it a difficult hour’s work. Points from Ryan O’Grady (4), Podge O’Connor, Eoghan O’Sullivan, Finbarr Murphy and Brian Kelly (45) had us in charge at 0-9 to 0-4 but Kilcummin stole in for a goal and it took another point from Podge O’Connor to steady the ship. Kilcummin had the better of the second half for some periods and indeed closed the gap to one point by the 47th minute, 0-13 to 1-9. But cousins Peter McCarthy and Ryan O’Grady combined for a further three points to see out the win on a 0-16 to 1-9. Team: Brian Kelly (0-1), Rob Leen, Danny Sheahan, Podge O’Connor (0-2), Jonathan Lyne, Darragh O’Doherty, Darragh Fleming, Padraig Lucey, Cian Gammell, Eoghan O’Sullivan (0-1), Peter McCarthy (0-1), Finbarr Murphy (0-1), Ryan O’Grady (08), James O’Donoghue (0-1), Will Shine (0-1). Subs: Jamie O’Sullivan, Peter O’Sullivan.

SFL DIV.1: Dr. Crokes 0:12 Kerins O’Rahillys 0:15. A strong Kerins O’Rahillys side arrived at Lewis Road on Friday last determined to leave with nothing short of 3 points. The game was fast paced and lively right from the throw in with Rahilly’s scoring the first 4 points of the game within the first 7 minutes of play. Alex Hennigan kicked a fine free 9 minutes in to give us our first score of the day. The remainder of the first half was closely contested. Rahillys however secured the last 3 points of the half and went in leading 0:09 to 0:06 at the short whistle. Daithí Casey came out with his shooting boots on in the second half scoring 3 points within 9 minutes of play. Alex Hennigan was black carded midway through the half and our opponents took advantage of the numerical difference, scoring 5 points without reply during this time. Rahillys were awarded two controversial points by the referee in the closing 8 minutes of play which could have easily been the difference between the two sides. Next up is Dingle away on June 11th.

SENIOR CREDIT UNION COUNTY

LEAGUE: fossa 0-10 Listry 0-16. Fossa were beaten by Listry on Sunday before a large crowd in attendance, Fossa started brightly and raced into a 3-point lead and in a niggly game, the game hinged on 2 decisions, a sending off in the first half and a disallowed goal in the second. The result leaves it all very tight at the top of Div 3, with a single point separating the top 7 teams. Fossa are away to Ballydonoghue next Sunday at 2pm.

U13 BOYS: Fossa U13 boys hosted Ballyduff in the County League Division 5 semi-final. In sun drenched conditions both teams produced some excellent football. First half was quite even but it was the Fossa boys that took their chances to lead at the break 1-4 to 0-1. The Fossa goal was well worked and finished excellently by the busy Ross O’Gorman. At the start of the second

half the Fossa boys got a number of early goals which gave them a good lead heading into the final quarter. Ballyduff never gave up and were unlucky not to raise the green flag themselves when a combination of woodwork and some excellent goal keeping by Gerry Moroney kept them at bay. Kevin Breen, Donnacha Vaughan & Johnny Myers were in fine form in the backs while up front Ross Cronin, Josh Salvador & Ben O’Sullivan worked tirelessly for the team. The final score of 4-9 to 0-3 was not a fair reflection on the effort put in by the Ballyduff boys but was enough to see Fossa into the Division 5 county final.

Beaufort played excellent football in the second half with the backs shoring up the defence and supplying good ball to forwards who finished off a number of good moves with excellent points and goals. The margin was down to two points as the game entered extra time. Beaufort were very unlucky not to be given the advantage as Luke Foley continued after being fouled to score a goal but the referee call play back to award a Beaufort free. Glenflesk held out to win by the narrowest of margins.
