Fire warning in National Park

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Housing has appealed to the public not to light fires or barbecues in public places this summer.

As they appeal to the public to exercise renewed care and responsibility when outdoors the National Parks and Wildlife Service has increased ground crews on fire patrol and has ramped up aerial monitoring with helicopters and drones. Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O’Brien TD said: “If you notice a fire, please call the

emergency services on 112 immediately. NPWS teams are upping their patrols to identify potential fire incidents and act quickly should one break out. However as we know, prevention is better than cure, and we’re asking all members of the public to avoid lighting fires in open areas.”

Ireland’s oldest citizen has Killarney connections

Ireland’s oldest woman met with President Michael D. Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin this week.

Máirín Hughes, who turned 109 on May 22 has strong Killarney connections.

The previous record was held by 107-year-old Nancy Stewart who died on September 10 2021.

Although born in Belfast, Máirín went to school in the Mercy Convent. Her father was a customs and excise officer and the family moved around a lot eventually coming to Killarney after spells in County Down and Dublin.

Her mother came from the Rathmore area and her father was from Newmarket in County Cork.

She attended the Mercy Convent and has, in previous interviews, recalled

growing up on the shores of Lough Lein. “Neighbours who had three children were given the job of taking me to school,” she said. “They were annoyed because the children were going to school for two or three years but I was put in to the same class as them – my mother had taught me.”

In 2021 she featured in the book ‘Independence Memories: A People’s Portrait of the Early Days of the Irish Nation’, sharing stories of being kept in school in Killarney during an attack on the RIC barracks down the road.

In 1924 she started a degree in science and a diploma in education at University College Cork, before working in the pathology lab in University College Cork’s Department of Medicine for 16 years. last year she recalled her story on the

“Our National Parks and Nature Reserves, coastal sand dunes, mountains and upland areas, forests, meadows and urban parks are all places where we enjoy spending time in nature, but they are also home to our precious wildlife and their vulnerable young. This is a really important time of year for wildlife, especially vulnerable ground-nesting birds and mammals who are now rearing their young. We all want to get out and enjoy the good weather but let’s do it responsi-

bly - without putting nature at risk.”

The Director General of the NPWS, Niall O Donnchú, has also asked for everybody’s cooperation to protect nature and said:

“While NPWS has increased ground crews and monitoring from the air this week, we still need to enlist your help to protect nature at this high risk time. We ask that members of the public not light fires or barbecues in any National Parks or Nature Reserves, or indeed in nature generally. We are also asking that the public be vigilant and report any fire activity without delay.”

Game changer as Black Valley connects to 5G network

Residents of the Black Valley are enjoying 5G internet connection for the first time this week.

The Black Valley or Cummeenduff is a remote valley at the southern end of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks mountain range, situated south of the Gap of Dunloe and north of Moll's Gap; it is used as a southerly access into the Gap of Dunloe. It is also one of the most scenic parts of the country, popular with tourists.

The area was one of the last to get connected to the electricity network. This week eir, Ireland’s largest telecommunications provider, announced that it has brought 5G ultrafast mobile coverage to the area.

The announcement was made in the scenic Gap of Dunloe by eir as they were joined by local residents who are now enjoying high-speed broadband and crystal-clear mobile phone connections thanks to the latest leap forward in connectivity in the valley.

The extension of the network to the Black Valley community between Beaufort and Killarney brings eir’s 5G service to the equivalent of over 85% of the population.

While the ESB began the rural electrification programme in 1946, electricity did not make its way to the Black Valley until 1977 when it is believed to have been the last corner of Ireland connected to the national power grid. Now, it is leap-frogging over much of the country in getting the fastest speeds and highest capacity mobile network available which also supports high-speed broadband.

The development is a boon to local business owners like Eilise Sullivan of Anam Valley Cottages who rents self-catering cottages to holiday-makers and facilitates arts and research residencie, She can now promote her business and take online bookings with an assured, high quality broadband connection.

“I am incredibly proud of my home in the Black Valley. I started this business because I wanted to be able to share these incredible landscapes with other people from around the world and I wanted to try to elevate the position and perceived value of rural communities. With eir 5G those things are now possible,” she said. “I have struggled for years with a substandard service which has made it difficult to manage and progress all areas of the business. It is such a relief to know that I will never have to be in that position again..”

Thousands of tourists who visit the area by bicycle, boat or pony and trap every year will now be able to livestream their experience on TikTok or update their Insta-stories from right there in the heart of this picture postcard location.

MOUNTAIN RESCUE

Kerry Mountain Rescue’s vital service will also benefit from reliable high-quality connectivity and not have to rely on ‘walkie-talkie’ coverage when they head off in search of a climber in distress in the area.

The four masts used to bring the coverage to the area have simply replaced legacy fixed network infrastructure with each mast measuring only 12m in height to fit with the aesthetics of Black Valley.

Killarney Looking Good Competition returns

Over three decades after it was first initiated, to help improve the aesthetic values of the town, the Killarney Looking Good Competition is back with a vengeance with a new committee, new categories, new sponsors and a whole new approach.

When the project was first launched in 1991 it was a relatively low-key community event but it grew in importance with each passing year, culminating in some style when Killarney won the prestigious overall award in the national tidy towns competition in 2011.

After an enforced three-year absence since 2019, due to the pandemic, the competition has now been given a whole new lease of life and the 2023 version was officially launched this week by Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Niall Kelleher. Awards will be presented in 26 different categories and high achievers in the business and residential community will be honoured at a gala prizegiving ceremony at the close of the tourist season. This year two new categories are being introduced in memory of two remarkable people who played massive roles in keeping Killarney looking its best down through the years.

Yvonne Quill, who passed away last October, was the driving force behind the Killarney tidy towns campaign for several years and she was at the helm when the sought-after overall award was secured 12 years ago.

Award will be presented to the volunteer of the year – a person who the adjudicators consider to be a standout contributor – in the overall effort to keep Killarney tidy.

Up to the time of his death in January 2020, Fr Michael Murphy was the public

face of tidy towns and he played a huge part in Killarney, Kenmare and Sneem winning the overall national award in 2011, 2000 and 1987 respectively. Affectionately known as Fr Tidy, this year the Killarney Looking Good Competition will honour his memory with a special Pride of Place award.

In the business community, there will be awards for the best large and small commercial premises, best newly painted premises, best signage and the best retail award with prizes also for the most impressive hotel, public house, restaurant, café, guesthouse and best public building as well as the most improved premises. In the residential categories awards will go to the best large and small estates, best private residence, best roadside garden, best floral display and best friendly planting award.

Other categories include a green hospitality award, a corporate special responsibility award, a restoration award, best school and a special biodiversity award. Several highly commended awards will also be up for grabs and the winner of the prestigious overall award will be announced at the prizegiving ceremony. The Killarney Looking Good Competition is organised by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and Killarney Municipal District Council and the new committee comprises Sandra Dunlea – a daughter of the late Yvonne Quill – Kathleen Foley, John O’Mahony and Johnny McGuire who is spearheading the project.

MD O’Shea & Sons are the new overall sponsors of the competition and O’Mahony Media Ltd is the media sponsor. The competition will run throughout the tourist season and businesses and residential areas will be monitored on an ongoing basis.

Novena to St Anthony at the Friary

The Franciscan Friary is preparing to welcome back Fr Damien Casey who will lead the Novena to St Anthony this week.

Fr Casey is the current chaplain to the Mater Hospital and is the Director of the National Franciscan Pilgrimage to Lourdes. He spent a lot of time in Killarney during his training days and will return to lead this week’s Novena which runs from Sun-

day until June 13

“In previous years has preached the St. Anthony’s Novena in Merchants Quay and Athlone.,” said Br Pat, the Guardian of Killarney Friary.

“I am looking forward to welcoming Fr Damien and hope the novena will be as busy as previous years, we look forward to welcoming our parishioners from near and far to honour our wonderful St Antony who is a favourite to so many.”

Meanwhile, the Friary will host a special screening of the film ”The Letter’ on June 17 between 11am and 1pm

Featuring Pope Francis, the film carries a strong ecological theme and there will be an open discussion in the Garden room of the Friary afterwards.

National cross country cycling championship in Fossa this weekend

Killarney Cycling Club will host round two of the Cross-country National Series this weekend.

Based at An Oige’s woodland property near Fossa, the event has attracted entries from Ireland’s best mountain bike riders.

Great conditions are expected once again after what’s been a hugely exciting opening two rounds in Dublin and Cork. A woodland course consisting mainly of fast flowy single track (mix of gravel and woodland trails), there’s plenty of short but punchy climbs to contend with.

Tributes to Fossa founder Gene Moriarty

Fossa GAA has led tributes to club founder Gene Moriarty who passed away unexpectedly on May 22.

Gene and Fossa GAA were almost all the one.

When he started secondary school in St Brendan’s in 1964 he was asked was he Crokes or Legion man?

He replied neither and this was the acorn that grow into the great oak tree that now is Fossa GAA club.

He was the club’s first secretary in 1970 and 1971.

He was chairman in 1976 and again from 1992 to 1994.

Three years ago, the club published a book to commemorate its first 50 years and Gene played an enormous part in this, his expansive knowledge and fantastic memories of all the happening in the club since its foundation were paramount

to the success of the book.

Gene had a massive knowledge of all youngsters who played for Fossa and took a great interest in who they were, where their parents were from, grandparents and if any football or sporting connections.

He got great joy in club victories at all age groups but would burst with pride when players went on to represent Schools, Development Squads, Colleges, District and County teams.

He took great delight and immense pride in the last year when All Ireland medals, courtesy of David and Paudie Clifford came to the club followed by the club’s All Ireland club Junior win.

Currently Gene was serving as registrar and County Board delegate, which he has done for the last decade and his opinions were always valued at the club’s executive meetings.

Gene Moriarty was a founding member of Fossa GAA Club

Sadly missed and dearly loved by his family, his wife and best friend Margaret (Nee Murphy) and daughter Amy, brothers-in-law Noel, Gearóid and Seán and his wife Máire, sister-in-law Martina and her husband Brendan (Kelliher), nieces, nephew, Amy's partner Mikey, relatives, his many friends and all in the Fossa GAA Community.

“We are delighted with Philip’s continued fundraising support but also with his awareness raising for the charity,” Breda Dyland, Service Manager Kerry Cancer Support Trust.

“We are getting busier all the time and still get no statutory funding so are dependent on fundraisers like Philip’s to keep us on the road. We have just put our new wheelchair accessible bus on the Cork route so Philip’s funding will be going towards the operation of this vehicle.”

On Saturday, the local community group will host a family bingo event in the marquee in Tureencahill with €1000 in prize money on offer.

Ted Healy Properties wins DNG Small Branch of the Year

A Killarney estate agents has received a national award at the DNG National Conference and Awards, which took place at The Curragh Racecourse last week.

Killarney estate agent DNG Ted Healy Properties was named the ‘Small Branch of the year’ at the awards sponsored by the Irish Examiner.

The Conference and Awards ceremony was attended by more than 150 delegates from offices across Ireland where a range of topics from Ireland’s property market outlook to DNG’s recent partner affiliation with Hampton International and the role of DNG in the residential and commercial sectors, were discussed.

Delegates were entertained by guest speaker Ireland Rugby legend and La Rochelle coach Ronan O’Gara.

The judging panel of industry experts included Peter Dargan of Irish Times, Adrian Bushnell of Pan Research, Ross Killeen of Media Pro and Keith Lowe, CEO of DNG.

French culture course

Children from Tiernaboul National School have become experts on French language and culture after completing an eight-week course.

On Monday, the children in fifth and sixth classes marked the completion the Say Yes to Languages Modern Languages Sampler, the national initiative organised by Post Primary Language Ireland (PPLI) with a little celebration of all things French.

Children dressed as fashionistas, footballers, bakers or wore their own clothes as French children don’t wear uniforms. A crème de la crème banquet of French foods was just the right way to complete the sampler ‘en beauté’ before saying ‘Au revoir’ to French teacher Hélène Olivier-Courtney, from ‘French For All’, Killarney School of French.

This initiative promotes an inclusive and proactive approach to make this language journey meaningful and enjoyable. The children not only got a taste of the French language but also of the French and francophone culture. Songs, projects and games and artistic activities were all part of this enjoyable programme. The school applied for the Language Sampler last year and were delighted to be selected as one of the schools to run it. The success of the initiative relies on a school-wide approach and the active involvement of class teachers, SNAs and management.

Sunflower day fundraiser

Killarney Branch, Kerry Hospice Foundation are hoping the sun will shine for their Sunflower Day fundraiser which takes place on Friday, June 10.

There will be collections at various locations in and around town as well as Foley’s Spar Shop, Fossa and Hegarty’s Spar Shop, Muckross.

“This is our first Sunflower Day collection since 2019. It is one of our main annual fundraising events and is always well supported by the local community” says Cathal Walshe, PRO., Killarney Hospice Branch.

Funding of €17,000 has been allocated to tackle Rhododendron overgrowth in Killarney National Park.

It is one of nine biodiversity projects in Kerry that are set to receive funding announced this week by Malcolm Noonan TD, Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform.

A combined total of €2.7m has been allocated nationally with €96,263 going to the projects in Kerry.

They are €34,000 for Japanese Knotweed treatment in Dingle and West Kerry; €17,000 for a Rhododendron ponticum Strategy; €11,475 for the Kerry Biosphere Educational Programme 2023; €8,500 for Dune Restoration in Natura 2000 in Kerry; €8,500 to Celebrate 30 Years of Knowledge of the Shannon Dolphins and

€8,500 to Improve Soil Biodiversity by the use of natural bio-fertilisers.

“Given that it’s Biodiversity Week, I’m especially delighted to announce funding of over €2.5 million for 188 biodiversity projects,” said Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan TD.

“The Local Biodiversity Action Fund is an enormously impactful scheme that supports local authorities and communities to deliver on Ireland’s national objectives for nature, from invasive species to habitat restoration to awareness-raising to surveys and monitoring work. As more and more Biodiversity Officers join the ranks of our local authorities, I know that the benefits for nature and people that this Fund provides are only going to grow.”

Free CPR training in Anam

The Killarney Cardiac Response Unit is running free CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation training courses and demonstrations at the Anam Cultire Centre on Saturday from 10am to 2pm

Killarney Cardiac Response Unit is a team approximately 40 volunteers, from all sectors of society, who respond to 999/112 emergency Cardiac Phone calls.

They are actively seeking new members or people who wanted to be trained in life saving skills.

De Dannan to headline Milltown festival

Internationally renowned traditional music supremos Frankie Gavin and De Dannan are heading to Milltown on the August Bank Holiday Weekend to perform at the Féile Lughnasadh festival.

The award-winning band who have been a feature of the Irish music scene for almost 50 years will perform open-air in the Square in Milltown on August 5.

The Féile Lughnasadh festival is run by the Milltown-Listry branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.

It features four days of free concerts, céilís, music and singing sessions, workshops, and family fun, all of which is centred on the ancient harvest festival of Lughnasadh. The festival opens on August 4 with a special Lughnasadh parade and bonfire.

“Myself and the band are really looking forward to our concert in Milltown on August 5.

I have a phenomenal team with me for the festival. We decided to get back on the road and perform after a long rest as in recent times I had a health scare but happily survived all the treatments for oesophageal cancer,” said Gavin.

“Life is wonderful again and the music means more to me now than ever, I’d say. A new and different appreciation of our traditional music, or indeed, a new perspective altogether you might say.”

Rathmore students are Mental Health Heroes

The Student Wellbeing Team in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra were delighted to receive the news last week that they have been awarded the Amber Flag from Pieta House for their work promoting wellbeing in the school for students and staff.

The group which consists of students from 1st to 5th year took part in Headstrong Training with Cycle Against Suicide at the start of the year to understand the importance of focusing on student wellbeing They met throughout the year as a group and were supported by Niamh

Nearly 20 toddlers from Currow Playschool took part in the Barnardos Big Toddle marking not only 20 years of the campaign but 20 years of the playschool taking part.

Catherine Fleming Manager of Currow Playschool said: ‘We’ve been toddling for Barnardos for 20 years, raising lots of funds for a very worthwhile cause. All our boys and girls were superheroes for the day. Here's to the next 20 years!''

The theme this year, Big Toddle Little Heroes, celebrates Ireland’s youngest fundraisers who help vulnerable children their own age by completing a fun half-mile sponsored walk in their crèche, childcare group, pre-school or with their families.

The ceremony service took place in Fossa Church on Saturday followed by a beautiful function at the picturesque Dunloe Hotel.

For the second day of celebrations Tadgh, Alannah and guests skipped across the road to The Golden Nugget’s Outback Area.

Friends and family of the bride and groom basked in the glorious evening sunshine, enjoying light refreshments and cocktails. The weather lent itself to a beautiful BBQ and Co. Offaly band ‘Blessed’ kept the gang rocking well in to the night. They

even had a bucking cow which provided hour of entertainment and a few sore bodies the next morning!

Painting your home’s exterior walls is a great way to boost its kerb appeal while also offering protection against the elements. To ensure a flawless finish, it’s crucial to use the right products for the job.

• PREPPING YOUR EXTERIOR FOR PAINTING

No matter what kind of exterior you’re painting, you'll want to get your walls spick and span before starting. For the most part, a thorough rinse with water will do the trick. However, if you’re contending with pesky mould or algae, then we recommend Farbex Exterior Fungicidal Wash. It's easy to use, and you can dilute it to the required strength for your specific needs.

• WHAT IS THE CONDITION OF THE SURFACE?

The condition of your wall surface will dictate the types of products that you will use. For example, if you're dealing with powdery or flaky areas, you'll want to apply a stabilising primer to create a solid base to which your paint can adhere. Ral-

The Central Statistics Office has published the Census 2022 Summary Results.

In Kerry, between April 2016 and April 2022, the population rose by 8,751 people to 156,458. An increase of 6%. Over the same period, Ireland's population grew by 8% from 4,761,865 to 5,149,139.”

A further breakdown of Kerry’s population revealed that of the 156,458 people 79,071 were female and 77,387 were male.

The average age of Kerry’s population has risen from 40.2 to 41.5. The number of people aged 65 and over has grown by 18% to 29,567 in Kerry.

Irish Speakers: The number of people (aged three and over) who stated

that they could speak Irish in Kerry was 62,887 compared with 61,597 in 2016. Within this figure, 3,763 said they spoke Irish daily while 4,302 spoke Irish weekly.

Working From Home: 17,119 people (aged 15 and over) worked from home at least one day a week in 2022.This represented 25% of the workforce. The national figure was 32%.

Childcare: A new question 2022. There were 28,756 children aged 15 and under in Kerry in April 2022. Of these, 9,454 (33%) were in childcare, compared with 33% nationally.

Tenure: In 2022, 70% of households in Kerry owned their own home, with a further 24% renting. This compared with 66% of households owning their home nationally and 28% renting.

The Cabinet has approved Ireland’s participation in a European Defence Agency (EDA) project to improve cyber-threat response and information exchange with other member countries.

Oliver Sears, who is the son of a Holocaust survivor, said that "making money out of such material is immoral and unethical".

The silver-plated pencil is one of several historical items going under the hammer at Bloomfield Auctions in east Belfast next week. It is believed to have been given to the former Nazi dictator by his partner Eva Braun as a gift for his 52nd

birthday in 1941. It is expected to sell for up to €92,000.

The sale of Nazi memorabilia is illegal in some European countries, including Germany, Austria and France. However, there is no ban on such sales in the UK or Ireland.

Earlier this year, an immigration expert stated that if the Prince failed to disclose

his drug use during the application process, his residency in the US could have been denied. Furthermore, if it is discovered that false information was provided, his visa could face revocation.

classes' have been started up by Bridie Kennelly (CORU Registered Physiotherapist and Dietitian.

The Bump Room aims to reassure, motivate and support mums to be to stay fit, strong and confident to exercise in pregnancy. The educational components of the classes are designed to support women during their pregnancy and throughout the postnatal period.

Bridie graduated with a BSc Hons in physiotherapy from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2014. Her passion for women's health began in 2018 when she worked as a physiotherapist in Cork University Maternity Hospital.

In 2022 she completed a MSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from UCC - graduating with a 1st class honours and the UCC award for clinical excellence.

Using her knowledge in physiotherapy and dietetics, Bridie hopes to continue to pursue her passion in women's health and empower women through exercise and nutrition.

The final lead up to the exams can be one of the toughest times for Leaving Cert students as you grapple with last minute revision and the natural stress felt as the Leaving Cert becomes the main focus of media attention in early June.

Like any athlete or performer, it will be a lot easier when you actually get started and it is best to try to use exam stress to drive you on rather than immobilise you. It may be hard to imagine at the moment when the exams are all-consuming, that the Leaving Cert, although an important milestone, certainly will not define you. Regardless of what happens in each exam, you will have lots of options available to you and an interesting journey ahead.

TIPS FOR THE EXAMS

Have a schedule of the exams with your exams dates/time highlighted hanging up where it is obvious and visible at home and screenshot the timetable so you have it on your phone. It can be found on www.examinations.ie Have summary notes ready to glance over the night before each exam and make sure you are clear on what questions are compulsory, the marking scheme for each paper and the timing for each question.

Stick to a good routine with a healthy balance of revision, rest, fresh air, sleep and diet. Don’t be tempted to work late at night as it is usually unproductive and impacts on your concentration the following day.

Set 2 alarms for the mornings of exams and allow lots of extra time. You will need to be in your assigned seat in the exam centre at least 30 minutes before the start of the exam on day one and 15 minutes before all other exams. Have any utensils needed for the exam ready the night before.

Hydration is really important during the exams to help with concentration during longer papers, so make sure you have plenty water. A little snack is a good idea too.

The first thing to do when you look at the paper is to read the instructions carefully, your teacher will have gone through these many times with you. Mark all the questions you are going to do and right out a quick time plan for yourself.

If you feel you are becoming really anxious, focus on controlling your breath to bring a sense of calm. Breathe in through your nose for 2 seconds, hold your breath for 1 second, and breathe out through your mouth for 4 seconds. Repeat for one minute.

Focus on exactly what you are being asked, the most common feedback from examiners is that students give a lot of irrelevant information so keep glancing back at the question to keep yourself on task to target the marks.

Stay in the exam hall as long as possible. Don’t be tempted to leave the minute you finish. Read back over your answers, use all the time you have.

Try to avoid too much discussion after each paper, ‘post-mortems’ of the exams are rarely helpful and can add to stress levels, so once each exam is done, take a break and then move on to preparing for the next one.

Fassbender ready for second Le Mans appearance

Local Hollywood A-lister Michael Fassbender is in the final preparation stages for his second appearance at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The iconic endurance race is celebrating its 100th edition next weekend.

The Fossa star has already arrived in the famous French town where he is involved in a week-long series of engagements including drivers’ parades, autograph sessions and more serious appointments like

car safety checks, practice and qualifying. Like last year, when he finished 16th in the LMGTE Am class, Fassbender has been entered in to the event by the German Proton Competition team with Estonian Martin Rump and the Austrian Richard Lietz.

Fassbender dreams of following the trajectory of fellow Hollywood actors Patrick Dempsey who was second in LMGTE Am class in 2016 and Paul Newman who finished second overall in 1979.

Daly's Supervalu Goes Electric

This week four charging stations were opened to the public at Daly's Supervalu.

The new chargers are part of the national roll out of ESB charging stations. Located on the right-hand side of the lower car park, opposite Super Macs, the chargers will charge an electric vehicle in 30 minutes.

The 200kw units have two fast chargers two Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors – the industry standard for ease of use.

"It's great to be part of this national roll out of ESB chargers. We have four chargers with plenty of options for coffee and food while you use the fast charge stations," said Denis Tucker, Retail Store Manager.

The stations have already proved popular with users accessing Dalys 24 hours a day.

It’s easier than you think

In last week's article, I started a new series on why you need to invest. I'm not flogging any financial products here; I'm not selling you anything; I simply believe that if you can grasp the basic principles of investing, it can make a dramatic difference to your wealth over the course of your life.

In fact, in investing, sticking to the basics has been a far more rewarding endeavour over the long term.

To put this into context, after fees, only about 11% of actively managed funds outperform the S&P 500 over a significant period of time.

That is to say, professional investors, who repeatedly try to overcomplicate it, eventually get it wrong and underperform anyone who has just passively invested

Morgan Housel provides the perfect comparison to highlight this in his book 'The Psychology of Money'.

Housel gives the example of Ronald Read, an American janitor who gained a fortune of almost $8 million by investing patiently and living frugally. His investing strategy was simple. Invest for the longterm, and do not invest in companies you know nothing about.

Then, there is the story of Richard Fuscone, former vice-chairman of Merrill Lynch, who declared personal bankruptcy after the 2008 global financial crisis. Fuscone borrowed massively to expand his mansion, with "two swimming pools, two elevators, six fireplaces, 11 bathrooms and a seven-car garage".

These stories where an 'ordinary person' can outperform others with much better education, background or connections show up in the investing world all the time because how we behave around money is much more important than what we studied about money.

'Investing gurus' love to make it sound way more complicated than it is.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Software-as-a-Service (SAAS), Testingas-a-Service (TAAS), IaaS, FaaS, PaaS. These were the buzzwords of the early 2000s – a time of the “service economy” ramping up in the West.

What I never hear mentioned is “Careeras-a-Service”.

When you were younger and you thought about what you wanted to be when you grew up, what was on your mind? Were you thinking about what you were good at? What your parents did? Where the jobs would be? How much you wanted to earn some day?

Did you ever think about how you wanted to help someone?

Did you think about your job as a service? Because that’s what careers are, all careers - no exceptions. Builder, shop assistant, doctor, accountant, parking inspector - if your job was not providing value to someone, it would not exist. You are providing a service to society. You are contributing to creating a particular type of world.

Yet we never seem to start there.

The question matters – as research will tell you - because it gets to the core of who we are as human-beings. We are built for connection with others and for service - helping is a way that we experience a good quality of life. This concept, called Eudaimonia, is about the happiness that comes from fulfilling your potential, from being the most that you

The two main social welfare payments for carers providing full-time care are Carer's Allowance and Carer's Benefit. You may also qualify for an annual Carer's Support Grant.

CARER'S BENEFIT

Carer's Benefit is a short-term payment paid for up to 2 years to people who give up employment to care on a full-time basis for someone who requires full-time care and attention. It is PRSI based and you have to have a certain number of PRSI contributions paid. People who are self-employed and paying a Class S PRSI contribution will not qualify.

CARER’S ALLOWANCE

On the other hand, Carer’s Allowance is a payment for people who are caring on a full-time basis for someone who requires full-time care and attention and will require it for at least 12 months. You must satisfy a means test and the habitual residency condition to qualify for Carer’s Allowance.

“To claim either payment, you must complete an application form and submit it to DSP. It is important that you put in detailed information in relation to the level of care that you are providing to support your application. If you need a hand filling out the form, please call your local CIC where staff will be happy to help.”

FULL TIME CARE

A person is seen as needing full-time care when they need continual supervision to avoid danger to themselves or they need continual supervision and

The person being cared for must have their doctor complete, sign and stamp the Medical Report which is part of the Carer’s Benefit and Carer’s Allowance application form. “This Medical Report is not needed if the person being cared for is a child who is getting Domiciliary Care Allowance” advises Deirdre and the carer or the person needing care must not be living in a hospital or institution. However, you can continue to be seen as providing full-time care if you or the person being cared for is having medical or other treatment in a hospital or institution for not longer than 13 weeks.

“The time spent providing care must not be less than 35 hours per week and if you are away, you must be able to arrange full-time care for the person you care for.”

End of year celebrations at St Brigid’s Secondary School

Orla Benson was a pupil at the school from from 1985 to 1990. After leaving school Orla continued her studies until 1995. In September 1995 she was tragically killed in Boston.

At the request of Orla's parents an award is made each year to a Leaving Certificate student.

The criteria that staff consider when they are voting for the Orla Benson re-

cipient is how the student participated in the life of the school, their co-operation with peers and staff, how they used their leisure time in a creative way, their leadership qualities and sense of humour: someone full of the joys of life. Ciara Furlong was the recipient of this year's Orla Benson Award. This year for the first time sixth year students were asked to nominate students for the Ceist award, which was awarded to Eimear Gallivan.

• Roadway improvements including the widening and provision of a raised crossing to a section of the public access road.

Kerry County Council as the Competent Authority has concluded that the proposed project, individually, and in combination with other plans and projects, is not one which requires an Appropriate Assessment (AA) or an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and is not likely to have significant effects on the environment.

Pursuant to Article 120(3)(b) a member of the public, may at any time before the expiration of 4 weeks beginning on the date of the publication of this notice, seek an EIA screening determination from An Bord Pleanála as to whether the proposed development would have significant effects on the environment.

Guided walk to celebrate European Day of parks

It was a glorious Saturday morning that the conservation rangers, Trish Beecher and Jess Burkitt led a very educational walk out from upper Torc car park towards the Old Kenmare road, sharing their expertise on the local flora, wildlife and even local history for the low price of picking up litter on the way back. Keep an eye out for more events in the future, as there are more on the horizon.

Killarney Celtic will be gunning for their fifth league title in a row tonight (Friday) when they take on crosstown rivals Killarney Athletic in Tralee.

Celtic have been the dominant force in Kerry soccer in recent times with Athletic playing second fiddle. This will be the third Premier A final in a row to be contested by the Killarney clubs; Celtic won the 2020 decider 4-0 and last year’s final ended in a 3-0 victory for the club from Derreen. (The 2020/21 season was scrapped due to the pandemic.)

Prior to that, Celtic defeated Castleisland in 2019 and Dingle Bay Rovers in 2018, both on a scoreline of 1-0.

As for this season, Neilus Hayes’ Hoops qualified for the final by virtue of their first-place finish in the Premier A. Despite losing key players – including attackers Ryan Kelliher, Stephen McCarthy and Trpimir Vrljicak – to the Kerry FC project, the Celts won 12 of their 14 matches and ended up with an imposing goal difference of +34.

Athletic were not far behind, however;

Stuart Templeman’s team only lost one league game all season en route to 35 points - one behind Celtic and 11 clear of Castleisland in third. Interestingly, both of Celtic’s losses came at the hands of Athletic. The Woodlawn outfit impressively beat the old enemy 3-2 and 0-1 over the course of the regular season.

Goals by Roko Rujevcan, Pedja Glumcevic and a 90th-minute winner by Brendan Moloney clinched that dramatic 3-2 win in October of last year. It was a result that signalled Athletic’s intentions for the rest of the season. Rujevcan was also on the scoresheet when Athletic snatched a rare away win at Celtic Park on April 30.

Celtic’s imposing record in finals probably makes them slight favourites and in the likes of John McDonagh, Brendan Falvey, Wayne Sparling, Kevin O’Sullivan and Witness Odirile they have a potent mix of steel and skill.

But Athletic will take heart from their recent results in this fixture and they will be hoping that two of the stars from the 2017 team - Shane Doolan and Shane Lynch – can lead the current crop of players to glory.

The Division 2B final between Killarney Athletic B and Atletico Ardfert also takes place tonight. That match will kick-off at 7.15pm on the second pitch at Mounthawk Park.

Kingdom can lay some old ghosts to rest at the Páirc

It isn’t often that Kerry go more than two years without playing at Páirc Uí Chaoimh but that’s how things have panned out.

Since that awful night in November of 2020 when Mark Keane’s last-ditch goal knocked Kerry out of the Covid championship, we haven’t been back. The sides met in Killarney in 2021 and last year’s encounter was staged at Páirc Uí Rinn because of Ed Sheeran.

In fact, it’s even longer since Kerry fans have made the traditional pilgrimage to the banks of the Lee to support the senior footballers. The 2020 match was played behind closed doors, so the last game with Kerry supporters present was 2019.

I was one of the unlucky few to have

been present in 2020 and I remember it all too well. The rain came down hard and so did Kerry. It always hurts when your team loses but that one completely floored me. It was such a horrible way to lose a game and I felt so bad for the players as they trudged off the field, soaked to the bone and shaken to the core.

They got some form of payback the following year when they won by 21 in the Munster final, and again last year when they ran out 11-point winners in the semi-final. But something tells me that it would mean a lot more to return to Páirc Uí Chaoimh and do the business there.

It won’t be easy. The final scorelines in the last two games suggest that it was all one-way traffic but that simply wasn’t the case. In 2021, Cork led by 1-5 to 0-4 at the water break (remember

those?) and they pushed Kerry hard 12 months ago too. There was nothing in that match right up until the 50th minute, at which point Kerry brought on David Moran and Paul Geaney and ultimately pulled away. You can never really read too much into the McGrath Cup but Cork demolished Kerry in January. Their form since has been spotty but they did well to see off Louth last week, with the returning Brian Hurley (shoulder) kicking eight points in a two-point win. Hurley has proved to be a handful for Kerry full back Jason Foley in the past.

Significantly, John Cleary’s side are strong in a key area where Kerry struggled against Mayo: midfield. Ian Maguire and Colm O’Callaghan scored 0-2 each in Navan (and the latter scored 2-4 in that aforementioned McGrath Cup game at the start of the year).

It is also worth noting that David Clifford has never really shot the lights out against Cork. He has been well minded by Maurice Shanley, Seán Meehan and Kevin Flahive in the past three championship meetings, with the retreating Seán Powter also getting stuck in when needed.

Flahive suffered a cruciate injury late in last year’s game so it will probably be left to Meehan to track the Footballer of the Year this time.

Clifford was one of the few bright sparks against Mayo and he would love to bring that form to the Páirc on Saturday. With vital points on the line as Kerry try to secure a second-place finish (at least), there would be no better time to lay some ghosts to rest.

I expect Clifford and his teammates to do just that. Kerry to win, maybe not by a huge margin, but by enough.

Ladies All-Ireland fixtures confirmed

Kerry will get their All-Ireland series up and running on Saturday, June 17 with an away fixture against Leinster champions and current championship favourites Dublin. The match, which throws in at 5pm, will be shown live on TG4.

Last year’s beaten All-Ireland finalists will then take on Cavan on Saturday, July 1, with the Dubs and Cavan facing off the weekend in between.

Dublin once again emerged unscathed from their provincial championship as they saw off Meath to capture their tenth Leinster title in a row. Kate Sulli-

van bagged a goal in each half to help them to a six-point win.

Cavan finished bottom of the threeteam pool in Ulster following defeats to both Armagh and Donegal. They finished mid-table in Division 2 of the National League.

The Kingdom find themselves in Group 3 following their tough defeat to Cork in last Sunday’s Munster final in Mallow.

Victory would have seen Declan Quill and Darragh Long’s side advancing to Group D as top seeds but Cork raced into a commanding 2-5 to 0-1 lead in the first quarter and there was no catching them after that. The hosts eventually

prevailed on a scoreline of 5-14 to 2-17. Cork are joined in Group 4 by Galway and Tipperary; Group 1 is comprised of Mayo, Armagh and Laois; and All-Ireland champions Meath are in Group 2 alongside Ulster champions Donegal and Waterford.

The top two teams in each group will move on to the quarter-finals with the first-place sides earning home advantage against a runner-up from another group.

The quarter-finals are fixed for the weekend of July 15/16 and the semi-finals will be staged as a double-header in Semple Stadium on Saturday, July 29.

In total, 15 fixtures will be shown live on TG4. All other games in the All-Ireland Championships (senior, intermediate and junior) will be available to view via the LGFA’s live streaming portal.

Despite their recent setback, Kerry are still second favourites with the bookmakers to go all the way this season. Meath are third favourites with Cork and Galway completing the top five.

Dr Crokes kids enjoy poc fada competition

The Dr Crokes Hurling Academy held their annual fun long puck competition in Tomies Wood on Sunday last.

The children and their mentors took boats from Ross Castle to O’Sullivans Cascade and the contest took place around Tomies Wood. The budding hurlers were then treated to some food and a prizegiving at Kate Kearney's Cottage.

This ‘poc fada’ event is one of many fun initiatives being staged by the Dr Crokes club to promote underage hurling in the Killarney area. Crokes’ Hurling Academy runs every Saturday morning from 10am to 11am followed by football from 11.15am to 12.15am.

All coaches are fully qualified and from hurling backgrounds in Kerry and further afield. All children from Killarney and the surrounding areas are welcome to play.

Ahead of the FA Cup final, Eamonn Fitzgerald chats to Manchester United fan Fr John Ahern. The Firies priest has supported United

since his days as parish priest in Salford.

There is something special about a local derby in sport and we can look forward to two big ones tomorrow afternoon, on both sides of the Irish Sea.

Kerry will travel to Páirc Uí Chaoimh to exorcise that untypically dreadful performance versus Mayo and get back on track in defence of the Sam Maguire. More about that later, but first we set sights on Wembley and the Manchester derby involving City and United in the FA Cup final.

No need for the eircode on my journey to Firies to locate a man who can give me a very personal insight into tomorrow’s big soccer game.

The green and gold flag was fluttering in the gentle breeze as the smiling octogenarian guided me into his driveway.

“Pull in there and we’ll talk about the colours. Welcome to Moulacliffe,” said Fr John Ahern.

Townlands within a parish are important and very much so now with the demographic changes in Firies village. It is no longer a rural village but more like a small town and growing all the time.

No doubt the flag is up for Kerry.

“That is true,” Fr Ahern replied, “and it is always there, but the green and gold colours are not exclusive to Kerry.

“I was reared in the Kerry football tradition and there's a strong Kerry connection around here in Firies. Dr Eamonn O’Sullivan’s people were from Firies. Joe Sheahan was a great 40 yards man, and the great Breen connection with the 1913 All Ireland winning team will never be forgotten. Then there’s Mick Galwey, the Kerry junior and rugby international. And there are more.”

Very interesting but I am here to talk about the FA Cup final. Still the green and gold.

“Those were the Manchester United colours when they started out as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878. That was even before the GAA was founded. They were in Clayton, Manchester. The big change came in 1902 when a club meeting decided on their new name - Manchester United - and they moved to Old Trafford. Over the years there were developments but the Old Trafford location has not changed.”

Fr Ahern’s first parish after ordination in 1960 was the Salford diocese, which

incorporates Old Trafford. He was in a very privileged position having Old Trafford within his ministry area, but it must have been quite a shock for a young priest coming from a strong Kerry GAA background to be in this soccer mad Manchester?

“No not at all. Of course, I was a keen follower of football in Firies and in Kerry, but when I was a garsún I used to go for the newspaper for my aunt and she would leave me read the back page of the Irish Press. That was a sports page and you would only get a small little account of the matches of the big clubs in England but United was obviously the one that I was interested in.

“I followed soccer from that day on. I can remember listening to accounts of the matches on the Pye wireless and of course the big shock was in 1958 with the Munich disaster. I felt so bad that day that I couldn't face school in the Sem.

“I always had an interest in the soccer and of course when I went to Manchester it was just fantastic. United would be at home every two weeks and at that time you could watch the Manchester United reserves who played on a Monday night and you had some great players who were on their way to the first team.

“It's very different now of course with Sky Sports in particular because the television coverage determines when the games are played, unlike in the sixties when the games were played every Saturday home or away. Now you have midweek games. TV companies and advertisers determine when the game goes ahead.

Why does he think that so many Irish people follow United as if they were their team?

“Well, a lot of the Irish worked in the Manchester/Lancashire area and they got affiliated to United - even before they became United and moved to Old Trafford. United supporters at that time were predominantly Catholic and City were mainly Protestant.”

Did he know any of the players or the big personalities at that time?

“Well, I can remember as a young priest in 1960 I’d have been working right through the week with masses on Sun-

days. Saturday was matchday and Monday was more or less our day off from the pastoral duties.

“There was a great set-up there in the Devi Hume Golf Club and that's where the soccer players of United would have been playing golf. We also were members there and sure we loved it and got to know Tony Dunne and Pat Dunne, Busby, Foulkes and many more stars.”

The once dominant United have been overshadowed in recent years by Man City. Old Trafford is a great stadium that holds 74,000, but surely they are less unlikely to draw big crowds nowadays.

“Not at all,” Fr Ahern insists. “It’s a sellout every year with pre-season tickets and there's a waiting list of 150,000. Just like other big clubs, it's a very different United these days, of course. Now it's a brand. From the Edwards, to the Irish syndicate of JP MacManus and Magnier, and now the Glazers since 2003. God knows where it's going to go from now on.

“You see, Eamonn, in the present system in England the club thing is very different. It's a commodity. I mean, the top six clubs are literally owned by sheikhs, oil money guys from eastern countries and Arabia. And the same is true of Manchester City. They are also owned by big money people.

“I would say that roughly two-thirds of the Greater Manchester area supports United while City cover a third of the population. You have supporters here in Ireland boasting about ‘my club'. There is no such thing now. They are clubs only in name. They don’t have the same in-depth local community bond of the amateur sports club in Ireland.” The tea and apple tart were going down so well during this fascinating history of sport in general, but for the purposes of this article underpinning tomorrow's Manchester derby, we need a predic-

tion.

Gong by all known form this season, City are unbackable raging hot favourites, not alone to win the cup but to clinch the treble.

“I can't say for certain what the outcome will be,” Fr Ahern said. “You know full well that local derbies take a life of their own and on any given day the greatest of odds can be surmounted. Won’t Cork fancy their chances of lowering the colours of the All-Ireland champions tomorrow on their home patch?

“United can do likewise and I am sticking with the team I know best. United for me, always, including tomorrow.

“Pep Guardiola says that only some of their injured players will be back tomorrow. Dias has not trained for two weeks while Akanji, De Bruyne and Jack Grealish are also still doubtful. They would be big losses. You saw how a much-weakened City side were beaten by Brentford in the final game of the league.

“I suppose the only injury worry for Erik ten Hag is Antony. The Brazilian international was injured in that 4-1 win over Chelsea which means that United have qualified for the Champions League next season.

“Take all that into account and the cup final is far from being a certainty for City. I put it to Fr Ahern that he is biased. “Who isn't?” he replies.

DIVIDED OPINIONS - Are U12’s too young for competitive games?

Last week the GAA contacted clubs across the country to reiterate the Go Games code of practice which restricts clubs from playing/ organising competitive playing competitions for children under the age of 12.

The current rules prohibit clubs from keeping, recording, or publishing scores, as well as running events that result in players winning medals or trophies. While blitzes are allowed, they require approval from the county's Games Development Manager.

These regulations fall under the Go Games initiative, which was introduced to promote fun and friendship in sports rather than nurturing the best players and neglecting the rest.

DEBATE

Since the directive from the GAA, there has been a lively debate among parents, underage coaches, and even young children themselves as to whether competition is beneficial for young kids in sports. To gain some insights into different perspectives, I had conversations with a number of different individuals involved in GAA circles last week as I was

interested in understanding why parents and coaches were so divided on this and more importantly how are they forming their opinions After listening to views, I would follow up with questions such as, "And were you good at sports when you were younger?" or "And would your kid be one of the better players on the team?"

In nearly every conversation, people's opinions on the matter seemed to stem from their own experiences in sports. Those who excelled in sports from a young age and witnessed the positive impact it had on their development believed that competition was beneficial. Similarly, parents and coaches with talented children talked about the the positive effects, such as accountability, respect, and how hard work gets rewarded. Conversely, those I spoke to who admitted they were not very “sporty” when younger or those who were parenting a child who wasn't as skilled as their peers expressed concerns about the potential negative impact on a child's well-being. They described instances where their child would come home upset and disappointed if they felt they didn’t play a good match. They also mentioned feelings of rejection and exclusion if their child spent more time on the sidelines than others.

VALUABLE SKILLS

Both arguments have validity but it was just interesting to observe how divided people are on the issue, and how they came to form their opinions. Healthy competition can teach children valuable life skills that extend into their teenage and adult years, such as setting and achieving goals, handling losses, honing skills, problem-solving, following rules, and working effectively in a team. However, it is essential for clubs, coaches, and parents to ensure that the introduction and teaching of competition to children are not counterproductive. If competition becomes detrimental to a child's self-esteem, it can be damaging. An overly intense "win at all costs" mentality in this age group can be harmful and drive kids away from sports.

In my opinion, the GAA's Go Games initiative is a great framework for young kids to go out and enjoy the game in a safe and pressure free environment and they should continue to drive home the message. A couple of years ago I heard a story about an underage coach sending his team out to play a neighbouring club and telling the young lads not to shake hands with the opposition before the match. These were kids that went to school together and may have even played on other local teams together.

Clubs must ensure that their underage coaches understand and uphold the principles of full participation and inclusivity for children (I believe most local clubs do have very good underage academy structures in place these days). Responsibility does not rest solely with the clubs and coaches however. They need the support of parents, as coaches often feel pressured from the sidelines to give more game time to “stonger” players. A suggestion for these parents; if your child is one of the stronger players and you notice he/she gets significantly more playing time than others, consider approaching the coach before the next match and asking that your child sits out for an extra few minutes to give other kids a longer opportunity to play. You are not only supporting the coach but it will also foster empathy and awareness in your child toward their peers who get less game time. For the parents that want to give their kids some extra support to help them excel through sport, local Dr Crokes and former Kerry player Fionn Fitzgerald recently launched a new business called Kaipara Academy, an Athletic Development Programme that nurtures better movement nutrition and mindsets in young people. Fionn offers a free 15 minute consultation call with parents, details can be found on his social channels.

CONDOLENCES: The Club is sad to report the death of Esther Scott née Harrington and sister of the late Club founder Don Harrington. Esther would have been well known to many club members in recent years as she accompanied Don on his annual return trips to Killarney to present a memorial cup named after his late wife Monica who passed away in 2015. Esther, who was predeceased by her husband Eric lived in Croydon, London and passed away in hospital after a short illness. Esther was a very kind and caring person with a strong religious faith, and may she now rest in the peace of the Lord.

4 Fenit Samphires 3 after extra time. A fascinating encounter made a warm afternoon even hotter! Our girls have had a very hard route to get to the final, beating a strong Camp team, League winners St. Brendan’s Park and League runners up Listowel Celtic. But nothing could have prepared us for this game. It was enthralling from the start. Having raced into a 2-0 lead, through Izzy Lyons, Fenit struck back to go in at the break 2-1 to MEK. The second half was one of the craziest halves of football. Fenit pulled level with a well taken penalty. Both teams were at it hammer & thongs. Then with 2 minutes to, Fenit got a second penalty. Clodagh Quirke touched it onto the post, but Fenit followed through with the rebound. With only seconds left, Lyons stepped up again slot home a last-ditch corner. 3-3 at full time, extra time beckons. The pace of the game was relentless. The whole squad put in a huge shift. And it paid off. POTM Izzy Lyons stepped up with a great individual effort to give MEK the lead. Fenit pushed really hard, but our girls stayed strong. We hung on until the final whistle. Cue wild celebrations from players and our fantastic supporters.

Killarney Legion GAA

SENIOR MEN: Six points from the boot of Thomas Moriarty wasn't enough to save our Senior Men's B team from defeat in Round 8 of the Credit Union County League. Kerins O’Rahillys helped themselves into a 1-7 to 0-4 half time lead but a strong comeback in which Tadgh Doolan and Finn O’Sullivan were also instrumental just fell short in the end, the Strand Roadside winning on a 1-12 to 0-13 scoreline. There is a local Derby in Division 1 of the County League when our Senior Teams unbeaten run will be tested to the very limit by the visit of Kilcummin. The game throws in at 7.30pm on Friday night (2nd June) in Direen.

SENIOR LADIES: Our Senior Ladies welcomed Ballymac to Direen on Monday for the latest round of the Donal Curtin Cup. Playing with a strong wind in the first half, the visitors took the game by the scruff of the neck, but the Legion ladies did not panic and played their way into the game, raising their own green flag later in the half leaving the score at 1-02 at half time. The second half saw the breeze ease off but not the intensity as both teams really went for it in an enthralling encounter. Ballymac took a 2-point lead as the game entered its final minutes. Legion reduced the deficit to the bare minimum, but Ballymac came down the field to tack on another score to maintain the 2-point gap. A nail-biting

finish saw the Ballymac goalkeeper save well which helped secure the points for the visitors on the night. FT score Legion 1-07 Ballymac 1-09. No quarter was asked or given in what was a pulsating contest from start to finish.

Dr Crokes GAA

LGFA: Donal Curtin Cup - Dr Crokes 1-10 Scartaglen 2-11. Our senior ladies suffered their first defeat of the year last week in a great game of football in a sunny Scartaglen. Our girls started the brighter in the first half and took an early lead, despite playing against a strong breeze. Scartaglen had brought it back to level terms by half time, and the second half unfortunately saw us having to withdraw a couple of players with injuries and we wish our girls speedy recoveries. Scart ran their bench and ran out worthy winners in the end.

U15 B: Our U15s put in a super effort in Lewis Road last week to draw with Laune Rangers.

U11: Our U11s travelled to Rathmore last Thursday evening for a lovely evening of football. They had two good games against the hosts.

JUVENILE HURLERS: Our Juvenile hurlers had a fantastic day around Tomies Woods on Sunday for our annual long puc competition. Well done to the organisers Patrick Landers, Tom Murphy and Gene O’Doherty and all their helpers. A big thanks also to NeoDyne Ltd. Who sponsored the event.

ACADEMY: Our academy continues every Saturday. We cater for boys and girls aged 4 to 11 from the Killarney area. Hurling from 10 to 11 and Football from 11:15 to 12:15. All welcome, bring a friend! Qualified coaches with an emphasis on fun and making friends. We hope to see everyone there!

GENE MORIARTY: The death has occurred of Gene Moriarty, unexpectedly on the 22nd of May 2023. Beloved husband and best friend of Margaret (Nee Murphy) and devoted father of Amy. All club members were deeply saddened on the passing of our hugely active stalwart member and friend Gene Moriarty. Gene was serving as registrar and County Board delegate, which he has done for over the last decade and his opinions were always valued at our executive meetings. Our sincere and deep condolences to the family at this time, he will be sadly missed. May Gene rest in peace.

SENIOR DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE: Laune

Rangers 4-9 Fossa 5-9. Half time Laune Rangers 3-7 Fossa 4-3. Cracking game. Huge performances from Sam Buckley, Joe Cahillane, Lee Lenihan and Richard Wallace saw Fossa thru in this tight game.

Old war horse Mark Dennehy controlled midfield and it was great to see Mike Frank Russell give a great display of his silky skills at the ripe young age of 40 something!

KERRY: Kerry South U16 – Well done to Ryan Brady and the Kerry South Team Manager Adrian Sheehan and Shane 0’Sullivan (Goalkeeper Coach) in the management team who played away to Tipperary on Saturday winning on a score line of 2-15 to 11 points. Congrats also to Fionn Doyle who was in the U15 Kerry South squad were playing and victorious against Cork North.

THE SEM: Congrats and well done to Fossa’s Mikey Moroney and James O’Meara who were part of the winning Sem team vs Tralee CBS in the 1st year schools competition, the Aodháin Ó Conchúir Cup. A special mention also to David Clifford who managed the team.

CUMANN NA MBUNSCOL: East Kerry/ Kenmare schools were well represented during the week in the girls county finals. Shrone NS Rathmore were first into action in the two-teacher final. Showing fantastic skill levels, the girls performed well losing to stronger Valentia NS team in the finish. Realt na Mara Tuosist showed great team spirit in the three-teacher final to secure victory over a gallant Ballyferriter NS team. Fossa NS played great football during a brilliant game of football to defeat a strong Firies NS team in a sporting contest. St Johns NS Kenmare showed tremendous determination throughout in a tight contest with Balloonagh NS losing to a stronger team. Thanks to Vince Cooper and Emmet Finnan for supporting all teachers in working with all teams during the year.

MATCH REPORT: Our minor ladies, sponsored by Anthony Foley Decorating had their third outing of the Division 4, county league at home to Ballyduff on Wednesday evening, 24th May. Both teams started off very well, Ballyduff were lucky to get a goal in the opening few minutes, but Beaufort reacted and went on to kick some powerful scores. Beaufort were the stronger side, especially in the second quarter. Half time score Beaufort 2-9 Ballyduff 1-5. They worked tremendously hard up to the final whistle where the game ended on a score line of Beaufort 5-17 Ballyduff 1-10. It was an amazing team performance from our minor ladies, and we look forward to their next outing.

CAMPS: With families trying to find activities for their children throughout the summer holiday season, then look no further than Killarney Valley AC summer camps for children between the ages of 5 and 12. The club has been having great success throughout the year so far and are delighted to bring back the summer camps throughout the months of July and August. Not only are these multi activity camps enjoyable and fun, but they also play a major part in funding of the Killarney Valley AC arena located on the grounds of St Brendan's College. The activities at the track have been hectic with all of the school sports being hosted there, the various community games areas holding their local qualifiers and with the incredible successes by Killarney Valley AC on track. The construction of the track is arguably the most valuable asset in our community located in the midst of the school area. The camps are managed by the wonderful Allanah Kiely who has great experience in the world of summer camps. There is also a great team of facilitators with many familiar faces in the team. You can book your week or weeks through the link provided, there are spaces so don't leave it too late as these camps are very popular so as not to disappoint. METRO REGATTA: Congratulations to our Mens J18 Quad (Daniel Fleming, Daniel Daly, Ian Coffey, Con Stack) who were second in their category on Saturday last at the Dublin Metro Regatta held in Blessington. Great racing in the Division 1 event. Well done also to Marko Tot who was second in the C final of the Mens Division 1 Single and third fastest overall in the Intermediate category.

SKIBBEREEN ILEN REGATTA: The busy racing season continued apace on Sunday last at the regatta held on the River Ilen by Skibbereen RC, following a relocation from the intended venue at Drinagh Lake. The club won eight races including the Mens J18 Quad, Mens J18 Double, Mens J18 Single, Mens J16 Quad, Mens J16 Single, Mens J13 Quad and two straight final wins in the Women’s J13 Quad. A great experience for our crews racing over 750m of the home stretch of the O’Donovan brothers and Skibbereen’s famed Olympic athletes.

CASTLECONNELL REGATTA: On Saturday, May 20, the club was represented by a large contingent of 49 crews at the Castleconnell Regatta from Junior 13 to Masters. The club won 11 races and a number of other top three finishes. The category wins included the Mens master’s Quad, J16 Double, J16 Single (in two straights finals), J15 Single (in two straights finals) and Women’s J18 Double, J16 Quad, J16 Double, J15 Double and J14 Quad.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

OUTING: Sunday last, the 28th of May, we had our inaugural outing on Lough Lein for the Micky Griffin Memorial Trophy. Fished in warm and somewhat overcast conditions, the many anglers that took to the water that Sunday were very appreciative of the little breeze that was present and when the sun finally broke through in the late afternoon, the die

was cast with regard to the anglers who took advantage of the conditions earlier. The first name on the Memorial Cup will be that of Diarmuid Linehan who's perseverance along the Fossa shore paid dividends, he also managed to bag the heaviest trout of the day. The Top five rods of the well-attended competition were as follows: 1st Diarmuid Linehan. 2nd Anthony Griffin, 3rd Tom Dennehy, 4th Tom Ankatell, 5th Dermot O’Mahony. There is now a break in competitions for anglers and their very understanding families! Our next outing will be on Lough Lein on the last Sunday in August.

KILCUMMIN COMMUNITY GAMES: Athletics events were held last Tuesday evening. Well done to all who participated and wish all the successful participants the best of luck as they proceed to the County finals in Castleisland on 24th & 25th of June. Training session will be held soon please keep an eye on Community Games Facebook page. Kilcummin Community Games will hold a flag day in Killarney on Saturday 17th June from 10am to 6pm. We are asking parents/ guardians to donate an hour or two of their time to ensure the day runs successfully.
