LETTER THE EDITOR TO Dear Sir/Madam,

Whatever about a GAA museum or stadium upgrade, surely the County Board need to come up with a solution to the parking chaos around Fitzgerald Stadium on big match days? If it was any other sporting or concert event a proper traffic and parking plan would have to be submitted to, and approved by, the relevant authorities. How, in this day and age, the by pass road of a major town can be used as a carpark is beyond belief, a road that has seen more than enough fatal accidents,

surely it's a matter of time before a child or indeed adult will walk out from between parked cars onto the path of oncoming traffic with a tragic outcome. Surely there's enough outlying fields or carparks where a park and ride system could operate, there's certainly enough coach companies around to operate such a system. Is it not time for the County Board or head office to provide the most basic and safest of facilities for its patrons?

Yours, Brendan O'Shea,

Major upgrade for Fitzgerald Stadium to be announced

The Kerry GAA County board is set to reveal a major re-development plan for Fitzgerald Stadium in the coming weeks.

A joint effort between the county board, the Fitzgerald Stadium sub-committee and other key stakeholders in the county will be announced next month the Killarney Advertiser understands.

Last year the Kerry GAA chairman Patrick O’Sullivan revealed that the refurbishment of the stadium could cost as much

as €72.5 million.

In November last year he briefed a government delegation that included Leo Varadkar and other ministers before the cabinet re-shuffle that occurred around Christmas time.

“All these meetings have been positive towards the planned project,” said O’Sullivan at the time.

Speaking the Kerry County Board’s annual general meeting in Tralee late last year

Mr O’Sullivan said: “Fitzgerald Stadium is regarded as home for the Kerry senior

football team when championship begins.

“However, right now the stadium needs a major refit upgrading it to a multi-event centre to cater for the needs of the people of Kerry into the future.

“It needs to be modern and comfortable for our spectators not only to enjoy big GAA games but also to attract some of the finest Irish and international entertainment acts to this county.”

Der Brosnan, chairman of the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee, told the same meet-

ing.

“When we spoke with the International Rugby Board, they said the location of Fitzgerald Stadium was a template for international stadiums due to its location. The most important thing is that the stadium is within walking distance from the town.”

Now it seems this dream is set to take its next step towards reality. A major fundraising drive will be announced in a few weeks along with potential drawings of the planned re-development.

Fear ann féin: A tribute to Jim Bob O’Brien by Eamonn Fitzgerald

Flick back to Munster final day in Killarney July 1972. Having beaten Cork one could savour that very special walk down Lewis Road among a sea of green and gold supporters.

The first stop was always Brien’s, not for any libation but to meet and engage with the solid citizens who were reliable evaluators of the game and the individual performances.

experts ráiméising, not seeing the wood from the trees, and then Jim Bob excelled. Collecting those empty glasses was his ploy to put an end to such nonsense and sealed the lips with that wink.

Paddy Kavanagh, the former Inniskeen goalkeeper and wonderful Irish poet, captured the essence of Jim Bob in those wonderful lines:

can push her into second gear now Dad; there isn’t any sign of a guard or speed van out here.”

I never knew Jimmy O’Brien with the ‘O’ and Jim Junior was simply Jim Bob. They’re together now to discuss the fortunes of the Kerry team. Jimmy always appreciated Jim Bob’s take on games, so the good Lord called Jim Bob to his eternal home last weekend before the defeat of Kerry.

But 1972 was different; Brien’s door was shut. Only later did we realise that the good Lord was thinking of calling Jim Bob ashore.

Thankfully, Jim Bob was needed by all of us who appreciated that friendly smile, the hearty laugh and the “how’s it going there”, sealed with that mischievous and roguish wink?

Sometimes you’d find some so-called

“And there's the half-talk code of mysteries, And the wink-and-elbow language of delight.”

What a joy it was to meet Jim Bob anywhere, and he travelled far and wide co-piloting in that trademark red Merc. No need for GPS or Google Maps, Jim Bob was the resident Sat Nav.

Jimmy would be resurrecting some old Sliabh Luachra tune from his vast repertoire until Jim Bob intervened. “You

Jim Bob knew the lore and lilt of the pub and was a great judge of people. God knows he met all kinds: famous musicians, sean nós singers, story tellers, buailim scíths and plain country people, the rogues and the rascals, the sound people and those who were inclined to be airy.

Thanks for all the memories of the past half century, Jim Bob, the warm glow of friendship, affection and the fáilte isteach.

Is fada a bheidh cáil agus cion agam ort im chuimhne. Bhí tú i gcónaí gnaíúil, grámhar, cineálta agus suailceach. Fear ann féin, Jim Bob. Slán abhaile; beidh fáilte mór romhat ar Neamh.

National Park prepares to reintroduce Osprey to Ireland

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is ready to move forward with the reintroduction of the Osprey to Ireland this summer.

The project will include Killarney National Park.

Osprey are a magnificent fish-eating bird of prey that became extinct in Ireland 150 years ago.

The NPWS has been researching and preparing for the potential reintroduction of these birds for a number of years and now expects to reach a significant milestone with the arrival of the first 12 Osprey chicks in July. The reintroduction programme aims to establish a viable, free-ranging Osprey population that eventually breeds in Ireland.

They have a long heritage in Ireland, with several place names around the country, particularly in Munster, referencing the bird. For example, Killarney

Minster visits National Park

Minister for State for Heritage and Electoral Reform Malcolm Noonan paid a visit to Killarney National Park on Friday last as part of National Biodiversity Week.

He took the time to call to observe the recently planted 30,000 acorns from royal oak and sessile oak gathered within the National Park, there he met NPWS Conservation Ranger, Tim Cahalane. He visited the important work carried out by the Volunteer Meitheal Group and met Peter O'Toole, Johnny McGuire and Padraig Treacy.

He also saw at first hand the staff demonstrating Fire prevention techniques. NPWS Divisional Manager of the Éamonn Meskell and Regional Manager Danny O'Keeffe, escorted the Minister to the various sites.

National Park is home to a site known as Osprey Rock at Loch Léinn pointing to the bird’s history in Ireland, particularly close to rivers and lakes as it hunts for fish.

One of the project leaders is local NPWS Divisional Managers Eamonn Meskell, who also led and delivered the ongoing and highly successful White-tailed Eagle Reintroduction Programme in Ireland.

The experience gained and knowledge acquired during the Eagle programme will be of great benefit to the Osprey Reintroduction Programme.

“In addition to the holding pens at the release sites, artificial eyries will also be constructed in the release area,” said Mr Meskell.

“The details of the construction of holding pens and artificial next sites, feeding and care of birds, their transport and release are based on extensive experience with other Osprey reintroduction programmes, and with the White Tailed Eagle reintroduction programmes in Ireland over nine years. Once the chicks arrive in Ireland we’ll be monitoring their progress and adapting their feeding regime to build towards their eventual release over the summer.”

While the programme may take some time for the species to begin breeding again, the reintroduction of this fish-eating apex predator will provide significant insights into the health of the Irish ecosystem, and its waters over time.

Killarney showcased to an international botanists

Botanists from all over Ireland and Britain gathered in Killarney for the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI) botanical four-day summer field event.

Members got the chance to appreciate the bountiful botanical wonders of County Kerry.

Killarney National Park - National Park and Wildlife Service were among the hosts of the biggest field meeting of the year, which coincided with the start of National Biodiversity Week. The earliest recorded botanical visit to Kerry was in 1699 and over three centuries later, County Kerry continues to interest Irish and British botanists due to the diversity of plant species and habitats.

Killarney is famous for its Atlantic oak, yew and wet woodlands and the surrounding region has specialist plants in the peatlands and mountains.

HeartBeat’s cook off – be early!

This month HeartBeat Killarney has come up with a new slant on safe cooking.

A free copy of the cook book ‘101 Square Meals - Easy recipes for everyday life’ will be available to all those who come early to the May meeting on Tuesday night. This book from Safefood which is supported by the HSE & MABS will come to life on the night as chefs from The International Hotel Killarney have very kindly volunteered to cook some of the recipes in the book for a tasting session during the meeting.

Nutritionist Paula Duggan will be on hand to discuss the nutritional benefits of each recipe prepared for tasting. She can also advise on any tweaks required to meet individual tastes and needs.

There will be four main recipes available to taste during the course of the evening; Meat Loaf, Baked Stuffed Fish, Chicken Fingers and Spanish Tortillas. There is a fifth recipe for tasting on the night but all that Chairperson Billy O'Sullivan will say

about it is “It will be available at the end of the night with a cup of tea and we hope it will send everyone home with a smile on their face.”

This is a night that the HeartBeat group has worked long and hard to make happen.

“It came together because of the amazing generosity of Tracy Coyne, Catriona White and the wonderful Kitchen Team at the International.” said Billy. In these times when the price of foods has risen dramatically it is still possible to eat healthily with the guidance from this book. There are lots of tips also on food storage, freezing food, kitchen hygiene and food allergens.

HeartBeat meetings are FREE and all are welcome to come along on Tuesday May 30th at 8pm at the Parish Centre beside The Church of the Resurrection Park Road V93 WN32.

Jordan Lee to inspire the next generation of Paralympians

Paralympian Jordan Lee will help find the next generation of International sport stars at a special event in Cork on May 28.

Paralympics Ireland will bring Permanent TSB NextGen athlete recruitment campaign to the MTU Arena sports centre at Munster Technical University next week. Jordan was discovered at a similar event in 2016 and went on to represent Ireland at the Tokyo Olympics.

A chance conversation with six-time Paralympic sprint champion Jason Smyth and fellow Permanent TSB NextGen ambassador led to Lee attending a Paralympic expo, just after the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

While attending the expo, his natural flair for the high jump was spotted and he quickly progressed in the sport after being matched up with coaches who were able to hone his untapped potential.

Permanent TSB NextGen is a one-day regional opportunity for young athletes interested in para sport to discover their paralympic potential through a range of physical challenges and exploring different Paralympic sports.

“Events like these are so important to

open the minds of young athletes about the opportunities that could lie ahead. To have the potential to represent your country and travel the world to compete, is just amazing,” said Lee.

“Being a Paralympian means everything to me. Whenever I put on that Irish vest, I know that I’m not just representing myself, I’m representing my family, my friends, my community, my county and the entirety of Ireland. It’s a privilege every time I go out and compete, and to be able to do that at the highest level possible at the Paralympics is an extreme achievement.

“The advice I would give to kids looking to get into para sport is to not be afraid to get out of their comfort zone and try something new. Always work hard, and always be open and willing to learn to get better. Never let other people’s negativity hamper your will to achieve great things, and of course, enjoy every minute of the journey.”

Trip of a lifetime for Glenflesk and Raheen school children

Pupils from Glenflesk NS and Raheen NS swapped their normal routine of schoolwork and homework for six days in Spain recently.

A travelling party of 48 made up of children, parents and staff from both schools enjoyed cultural, educational and beach activities as part of an Erasmus Project with a school in the city of Cartagena, one hour south of Alicante. “Our trip to Spain was delayed due to Covid but it was well worth the wait,” said Favier, Principal of Glenflesk NS.

“It’s not too often children get to travel abroad with their classmates in primary school so we think they will remember this trip for a long time. We were delighted to have a lot of parents with us and they were able to witness first-hand the benefits of such a trip.”

The purpose of the visit came about after both schools secured funding from

The European Union for an Erasmus Project. The children from Ireland and Spain have been working together for the last two years on various projects. This has culminated with a trip to each other's countries. While in Spain the Irish children met with students from Salesianos School, Cartagena and over the six days enjoyed paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, an open top bus tour of the city, an interactive visit to the ancient Roman ruins, lessons on sea and marine life and a full day in school.

“It was the first time both schools undertook a project of this size and we are delighted with how it worked out. It was also the first time a lot of our pupils had been on an airplane,” said Joan Mullane, Principal of Raheen NS.

“We are very grateful for all the support from our parents and staff, who helped to make the trip such a success. Our aim is to make this a regular event for both schools. Preparation is already underway to take a similar sized group to Rome in 12-18 months’ time.”

GAA Clubs OsKaR fundraiser returns after five years

A flurry of excitement can be felt throughout the parishes of Kilcummin and Glenflesk with the news that the neighbouring clubs are joining forces for a second time to present the ‘A Night at the OsKars’ on December 7 in the INEC.

It is five years since the two clubs first came together to undertake this type of fundraiser, the first time it had been done in Munster. It was a resounding success with a capacity crowd attending on the night and a fantastic buzz around the two parishes throughout the rehearsals and filming.

“There has been a huge interest in the communities to do the OsKaRs again’, says Derry Healy of Glenflesk, “Anyone who took part last time just loved it.” This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than the last event and it is hoped to involve even more actors. Seven brand new films will be produced this time around, the titles of which will be revealed at the Launch Night in midJune. While the rehearsals and filming won’t take place until the autumn, plans are well under way at this stage by the organising committee which involves members of both clubs.

An Information night will take place on Monday (May 29) at 8.30pm in the Killarney Heights Hotel and all are welcome to attend.

This will give anyone interested in taking part a chance to find out what is involved to hear from Kevin Rowe, the events company helping with the fundraiser and chat to people who took part previously.

Following on from this the casting night will take place on June 12.

Those who wish to take part must be over 16 and anyone under 18 will need to have a parent present for rehearsals and filming.

Participants don’t need to be members of the clubs, this is an opportunity for people in the Kilcummin, Glenflesk and surrounding areas to see themselves on the Big Screen.

“When we did the OsKaRs in 2018, we had no idea what a huge success it would be. It went far beyond raising funds for both clubs, it lifted the spirits of both parishes in a way that we could never have foreseen. That is why we have decided to do it all over again and we look forward to an exciting six months ahead,” explained Niamh Dwyer, Kilcummin GAA.

Kells Bay Gardens wins gold medal at Chelsea Flower Show

Ireland’s Master Gardener Billy Alexander of Kells Bay Gardens in Cahersiveen was one of those who wowed the judges enough to receive a prestigious gold medal Royal Horticultural Society (RHS)

Chelsea Flower Show

This is the third gold medal that Billy has been awarded by the RHS for his rare and exotic fern displays, scooping golds at the 2021 Hampton Court, and Chelsea Flower shows respectively.

Kells Bay Gardens is home to one of the largest private collections of exotic tree ferns which grow naturally in the tranquil microclimate at Kells Bay Gardens overlooking the Dingle Peninsula. The inspiration for this year’s display came from the Irish landscape, and in particular the wild surrounds of County Kerry.

The design simulates a Kerry bog, and along with a myriad of fern varieties, native sphagnum moss features amidst small peaty bog pools. Offsetting this, are large ancient rocks typical of the Iveragh peninsula landscape

Kerry Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill has extended his congratulations to Billy.

He said:

“This is a massive achievement and everyone in the county is proud of the fact that we have Gold Medal standard gardens in our midst at Kells Bay House and Gardens on the Ring of Kerry. “Billy’s design showcases the wild Kerry landscape and the many types of fern that can be seen all around us, to a world class standard. Kells Bay House and Gardens is another fantastic attraction in Kerry and Billy’s success will continue to draw more visitors here.”

Killarney teachers complete healthy eating education programme

Primary school teachers from the Killarney area are participating in a healthy eating programme that encourages children to eat more fresh produce.

They recently joined teaching colleagues from across the region for a Food Dudes Presentation Day at the Ashe Hotel, Tralee to celebrate the achievements of 540 schools that have completed their three-year participation in the award-winning Food Dudes Programme. The three-year curriculum-linked programme includes a year of intervention, followed by two in-school Food Dudes Weeks, aimed at promoting health eating habits amongst primary school children. The healthy eating programme encourages children to eat more fresh produce and is based on repeated tastings of fresh fruit and vegetables, rewards and positive role models.

A new and improved Food Dudes programme is currently being rolled out in schools and includes new varieties of fruits and vegetables, additional tasting days, new eco-friendly rewards, as well as new teaching and learning materials which include videos, recipes and a range of bilingual activities.

The Food Dudes Presentation Days provide teachers with an opportunity to network and feel part of a community of

change. Ideas about ways in which the Food Dudes programme can be integrated into the curriculum and daily routines are shared, and peer to peer support is encouraged.

There are currently 1,700 primary schools engaged in the three-year Food Dudes programme, creating a movement of life-long change embedding healthy eating within the school and wider community in a way that promotes healthy eating habits amongst children, helps to reduce obesity rates, and improve overall wellbeing. Over the lifetime of Food Dudes, over 3,300 primary schools and more than one million pupils have taken part.

The Food Dudes Healthy Eating Programme is managed by Bord Bia in Ireland and is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with support from the European Union under the School Fruit and Vegetables Scheme. The programme was first developed by the Food Activity Research Unit, School of Psychology at Bangor University, Wales.

Dublin Airport Car Parks Sold Out: Aunt Nellie, Beware!

Attention, travellers! Dublin Airport is experiencing a hilarious parking predicament. Brace yourselves: all car parks are completely sold out in the coming days. It's tighter than a leprechaun's waistcoat, and the situation won't improve anytime soon.

If you didn't pre-book a car park space, tough luck! You'll need to explore other options to reach the airport. Blame it on the closure of a privately run parking facility and the return of pre-Covid passenger levels. It's a parking pandemonium!

The long and short-term car parks are bursting at the seams, except if you're just picking up Aunt Nellie. For longer stays, parking is as tight as your postIrish breakfast waistband.

According to Graeme McQueen, the DAA Communications Manager, the demand exceeds their 23,000 parking spaces. With 100,000 daily passengers, it's like fitting an elephant into a leprechaun's hat.

So, dear travellers, hop on a bus, hail a taxi, or sweet-talk a friend into dropping you off. Consider alternative parking in Dublin and enjoy a delightful transit adventure.

Dublin Airport warns that this parking madness will continue throughout the summer.

Embrace the chaos, channel your Irish luck, and get ready for an unforgettable parking adventure. Aunt Nellie included! Safe travels, everyone!

Get Ready to Cash in on Cans!

In an exciting development, plastic bottles and aluminium cans are about to become your ticket to some extra dough, right in the comfort of your local supermarket car park!

The government has just announced plans to introduce "reverse vending machines" that will be scattered across the country's supermarket car parks by February 2024. What does this mean for you? Well, prepare to see the price of bottled and canned beverages increase slightly at the checkout, by up to a charming 25 cents. But fret not! You can easily reclaim these costs by returning the empties through these fancy machines.

Junior Minister Ossian Smyth predicts that an impressive €360 million will be redeemed every year through vouchers at participating stores. And that's not all! Once this system is fully up and running, generous souls will have the option to donate their return deposit to charity. Talk about doing good while getting some extra change in your pocket!

So, keep an eye out for those shiny reverse vending machines popping up in supermarket car parks near you. It's time to start collecting those cans, get a little bonus cash, and maybe even make a difference for a good cause. Cheers to that!

The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll: Tina Turner (1939-2023)

Tina Turner, the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll, whose powerful voice, and dynamic dance moves earned her the crown over a remarkable 60year career, has passed away at the age of 83.

On Wednesday, May 24, the legendary singer peacefully departed from this world after a long illness at her residence near Zurich, Switzerland, as confirmed by her publicist Bernard Doherty in a heartfelt statement.

With deep reverence, the statement read, "Tina Turner, the 'Queen of Rock 'n' Roll,' has peacefully left us today at the age of 83, after a valiant battle with illness at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. The world has lost a music legend and a true role model. A private funeral ceremony will be held, attended by close friends and family. We kindly request respect for her family's privacy during this difficult time."

Tina Turner enjoyed one of the longest and most influential careers in the history of rock music. Her powerful vocals

led to numerous Billboard Top 40 hits spanning four decades, earning her prestigious awards, including Grammys, a Kennedy Centre Honour, and a well-deserved place in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

Renowned for her explosive performances, adorned in glittering stage attire, Tina Turner's energy was unmatched as the frontwoman of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue during the 1960s. Together with her then-husband, she created an electrifying duo, delivering high-octane renditions of iconic songs such as "Proud Mary," "Come Together," and "I Want to Take You Higher."

Taking the world by storm as a solo artist in the '70s, Tina Turner underwent a transformative journey, embracing the era of MTV and leaving an indelible mark on pop culture. Her hits like "What's Love Got to Do with It," "The Best," and "Private Dancer" propelled her to become one of the highest-selling female artists in history, captivating audiences globally.

Meta Slashes 490 Irish Jobs in Latest Layoffs

Facebook's parent company, Meta, is making waves with the final phase of its three-part job cuts plan, announced back in March. The tech giant is set to eliminate 10,000 positions globally, and the impact is hitting close to home with significant job losses in Ireland.

This week, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar addressed the Dáil, revealing that Meta's social media operations in Ireland would suffer "significant" job losses. The details have now emerged, with the firm's international headquarters in Dublin bearing the brunt of the blow. A staggering 490 jobs will be lost, equating to a 20% reduction in Meta's Irish workforce.

Mr. Varadkar expressed his sympathies, acknowledging the challenging times ahead for affected employees and their families. This news comes as a significant setback for the Irish job market. Meta made headlines by being the first major tech company to initiate a second round of mass layoffs, following the dismissal of over 11,000 employees in the previous autumn. The company's headcount is now back to mid-2021 levels, effectively rolling back the rapid expansion that had doubled its workforce

A Triumph of Science

In an astounding scientific feat, a paralyzed man has defied the odds and regained the ability to walk using only his thoughts.

Through innovative research by French and Swiss scientists, two ground-breaking implants have restored communication between his brain and spinal cord, opening doors to hope and possibility. Gert-Jan, a 40-year-old Dutchman, expressed profound gratitude for this breakthrough, describing it as a newfound freedom after over a decade of paralysis. Thanks to the revolutionary

system, he can walk "naturally," conquer challenging terrains, and climb stairs with confidence, as documented in Nature. At the heart of this feat are cutting-edge implants that establish crucial brain-spinal cord connections, restoring motor function through thought-controlled movements.

This inspiring journey showcases the power of resilience and human spirit in the face of adversity. It reminds us of the incredible possibilities when determination and visionary research unite to overcome barriers deemed insurmountable.

since 2020.

The impact of the layoffs was felt immediately, as affected employees took to platforms like LinkedIn to share their unfortunate news. The brunt of the job cuts is expected to hit Meta's advertising sales, marketing, and partnerships teams.

The decision to downsize comes after months of struggling revenue growth, compounded by high inflation and a decline in digital advertising due to the waning effects of the pandemic e-commerce boom.

In addition to the job cuts, Meta has been funnelling billions of dollars into its Reality Labs unit, focused on developing the metaverse. However, this venture incurred a staggering loss of $13.7 billion in 2022. The company is also investing in upgrading its infrastructure to better support artificial intelligence initiatives. The repercussions of Meta's Dublin layoffs will undoubtedly be felt throughout Ireland, as affected employees face an uncertain future. Our thoughts are with them and their families as they navigate the challenges ahead. The job losses cast a shadow on the Irish workforce, highlighting the need for support and resilience during these trying times.

Kerry has the most blue flag beaches in the country

The sustained exceptional standard of the coastal and beach environment in Kerry has been acknowledged again this year with the awarding of 15 Blue Flags for Kerry beaches and coastal amenities for 2023.

Kerry has secured the highest number of Blue Flags in the country.

It was announced by An Taisce and the Blue Flag adjudicators today that Kerry has retained its current 15 Blue Flags, including 13 at beaches and one each at the Portmagee Pontoons and the Fenit Marina. The following beaches and marinas awarded Blue Flags for 2023: Rossbeigh, Ballybunion South, Ballybunion North, Ballyheigue, Fenit, Maherbeg, Kells, Doire Fhíonáin (Derrynane), White Strand, Baile an Sceilg (Ballinskelligs), Banna, Fionntrá (Ventry), Inch, Fenit Marina and Portmagee Pontoons.

Meanwhile, four Green Coast Awards have been presented for Ballinskelligs, Béal Bán, Castlegregory and Littor beaches.

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Francis Flynn warmly welcomed the announcement as a very significant acknowledgement of the quality of beach environments in Kerry:

World class beaches need world class facilities

Kerry leads the country with 13 Blue Flag beaches and is a great achievement for the county.

‘Blue Flags are a hugely important internationally recognised indicator of the quality of a beach environment, and it is encouraging that Kerry continues to be the national leader in this regard.’

Cllr Flynn said that the awarding of the Blue Flags is a result of a collaborative approach between Kerry County Council, local community groups and beach users who work together to maintain our beautiful beaches and bathing waters.

Director of Services with Kerry County Council, Paul Neary added: ‘The local authority invests tremendous effort and resources in keeping County Kerry at the top of the Blue Flag list and will continue to ensure the sustainable management of the magnificent beaches along the Kerry coast.’

‘We would appeal to all beach users this summer to continue to be responsible by acting responsibly and leaving nothing behind on the beach except their footprints,’ he added.

As a committed user of the counties beach for over 20 years, one thing that has not improved and that is the facilities and access for beach users. People of all ages now see the beach as a year long destination whether it’s sea swimming, surfing, or walking, we are out in big numbers. It’s now time to invest in the infrastructure at all our beaches in north and south Kerry.

Banna is a world class beach, offering ample parking and access through the dunes. It is the access bit that irritates. Bar the main car park you are using paths through the dunes from the other parking areas to access the beach. I’ve witnessed many people struggle to climb a dune to access car park 3 from the beach. A wooden path is required here and at Sandy Lane just down from the main Banna car park.

Access is also an issue in the Maharees. There is no parking for west facing beaches where water sport enthusiasts congregate. For many years I was a regular surfer there but now with lack of parking and access I find myself visiting less often. Inch has access issues during the summer with the car park overflowing and visitors parking on the main beach sometimes in the hundreds. Serving these visitors is a prefabricated toilet block that has seen better days. Inch is crying out for further development both privately and publicly. While Rossbeigh, requires remedial works to dunes and better parking. Derrynane, Ballybunion and Ballyheigue are reasonably well served.

Kerry County Council are rightly proud of this year’s achievement, leading the country in Blue Flags, but let’s not rest here and aim for creating world class facilities to go with world class water.

It is imperative that we build on our successes for locals and visitors alike.

Healy-Rae elected as rally co-driver

Kerry politician Michael Healy-Rae kept an unusual promise on Sunday last.

He finally took up a long-term request by his friend and neighbour Thomas Randles after the TD joked about taking up rallying earlier this year.

Healy-Rae is a close friend and neighbour of current Killarney and District Motor Club chairman Thomas Randles. He attended the launch of the Killarney Forestry Rally in February in Castleisland where he revealed at the launch that Mr Randles has spent years trying to convince him to take up rally co-driving. That dream became a reality on Sunday when Healy-Rae navigated Randles in the Thomond Rallysprint in Limerick on

Sunday.

The Limerick Racecourse event was jointly organised by Cork and Limerick Motor Clubs.

The charity event raised money for several worthy causes including the Motorsport Ireland Benevolent Fund, Limerick Suicide Watch, An Garda Siochana’s Little Blue Heroes and Limerick Animal Welfare Sanctuary.

Healy-Rae took part in three of the four timed runs, a personal engagement on Valentia Island meant he had to leave early, but they still finished 11th overall out of 41 finishers.

“I am no Paul Nagle,” said Healy-Rae, “I have nothing but admiration for Paul and drivers like Tommy, who do this every Sunday.”

MOTOR ING BRIEFS... | Cavan Rally

The Triton Showers National Rally Championship resumes in Cavan this weekend.

Ger Conway is on pacenote duty for Monaghan’s Stephen Wright, and they start a seven in their Ford Fiesta Rally2.

Brian Doherty will co-drive for Martin Donnelly who is home from New York for the weekend and they will drive another Fiesta.

Doing nothing is not an option

Things have changed significantly in the investment space in recent years, but for some reason, most people haven’t changed their approach.

You’ve heard it 100 times before - Interest rates are rising, inflation is everywhere, and bank deposit rates are close to 0%. Doing nothing with your money is no longer an option, yet it is the default position for so many.

During the 1980s, leaving your money in the bank was perfectly acceptable. Banks offered up to 15% on their savings accounts - Not a bad deal.

Diligently setting your money aside while it earned double-digit returns until such time as you could afford to buy your first home for a mere 30K was a pretty good deal all round.

But for some reason, people continue to do the exact same thing to this day despite the fact house prices are ten times higher, and bank deposits pay 100 times less.

The level of inertia here never ceases to amaze me.

DON’T GET LEFT BEHIND

When it comes to human behaviour, inertia is a powerful thing. People are inherently slow to change the way they have always done things.

We only ever change what is immediately and obviously damaging to use.

Unfortunately, the erosion of our wealth is discretely pervasive, so we often don’t realise what’s happening until it is too late. 0% return from your bank account seems manageable in the short run, but over longer periods, it has a truly profound effect on your future wealth.

To understand the longer-term effects of holding your money in the bank during an inflationary environment, consider the following example of the purchasing power of $10,000 in 1971, compared to today.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics consumer price index, prices in 2020 were more than 550% higher than prices in 1971. In other words, if you put $10,000 under your mattress in 1971, it would have the equivalent purchasing

power of about $1,800 by today’s standards. Granted, there have been some large-scale inflation fluctuations over this period, but the compounding effects are no less apparent.

So, while zero returns on your money and higher inflation may seem manageable in the short term, they can have detrimental effects on your money over time.

THE GAME HAS CHANGED

Blindly doing the same thing the previous generation did in the hope of similar results is delusional.

Paris bans rental electric scooters

Parisians have voted to ban rental electric scooters in their city. Of the 1.3 million people on the city’s electoral register, just over 103,000 took part.

Almost 90% of votes cast favoured a ban on the battery-powered devices. Paris was a pioneer when it first adopted the e-scooters in 2018 but as their popularity increased rapidly so too did the number of accidents.

In 2022 alone three people died and 459 people were injured in e-scooter accidents in Paris.

It is estimated that there are almost 15,000 e-scooters across the city, operated by rental companies. Public concerns included how users weaved through traffic, regularly drove on pavements, riders not wearing helmets and

children as young as 12 could legally hire the scooters. The vehicles are often haphazardly parked and dumped scooters have become a significant problem.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo called the referendum, where voters could say if they were for or against free-floating e-scooters. Privately-owned vehicles were not part of the vote.

“Paris is going against the current,” Hadi Karam, the general manager for France at California-based rental company Lime, told AFP, citing decisions to increase the number of e-scooters or

extend contracts in Washington, Madrid and London.

Irish Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan has been preparing to regulate the used of e-scooters since the start of the year. The current situation is problematic, as under the 1961 Road traffic act, e-scooters would be classified as ‘mechanically propelled vehicles’. This would mean you would need insurance, road tax and a driving licence to use them in a public place.

This raises a number of challenges not least the fact there is currently no Insurance market for e-scooters. The minister is thought to be looking at reclassifying the e-scooter devices as “powered personal transporters”. The users would be treated much as a cyclist, once the

There are people still trying to save more and more money in the bank just so they can afford to pay higher and higher prices, but the prices are going up faster than they can save. Saving 5k a year to buy that house that’s going up 10k a year? Sound familiar?

You need to tie your income to these rising asset prices if you have any hope of escaping the vicious savings loop in the long run.

Unfortunately, this is the reality for our generation. Ignoring it will ensure you are left behind.

What worked for your parents isn’t going to work for you. The onus is on you to create an investment plan that will put your money to work and tie your future wealth to assets that will increase in price over time.

Stop naively putting all your money in the bank, hoping that ‘it will all work out’. It doesn’t work like that anymore.

I have spent the last few weeks writing a guide to creating and managing your own investment portfolio. To receive a copy, sign up for my newsletter by scanning the QR code above or go to www.theislandinvestor.com.

speed of the scooter is under 25 kph. If this legislation is passed users of e-scooters would not require insurance, road tax or a driving licence to operate the devices in a public place.

Increase in vacant property grant

Recent changes to the Vacant Property refurbishment grant have resulted in a significant increase in the amount of money on offer to qualifying candidates.

The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant (Croi Conaithe Towns Fund) is a payment you can get if you are turning a vacant house or building into your permanent home or a rental property.

In order to qualify for the grant, you must firstly have proof of ownership or evidence of active negotiations to buy the property where you are seeking approval for the grant.

You must plan on living in the property as your principal private residence or

make it available for rent and you must show proof that the property has been vacant for at least 2 years and that it was built prior to 2007.

The grant now applies to qualifying vacant properties in cities, towns, villages and rural parts of the country.

A grant of up to €50,000 is available. This is subject to upper limits for different types of work, having regard to a reasonable cost assessment by the local authority. The grant is inclusive of the VAT cost of the works.

If the refurbishment costs exceed the standard grant of up to €50,000, a top-up grant amount of up to €20,000 is available. To get this top-up grant,

you must confirm that the property is derelict. This means that the property is structurally unsound and dangerous. The total grant available for a derelict property is therefore €70,000.

You must submit an independent report prepared by a qualified professional, along with the application confirming that the property is derelict.

Local authorities administer the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant and will prioritise applications in areas where the level of vacancy or dereliction is high.

You can also contact your local authority and request to speak to the Vacant Homes Officer who will be able to assist with any queries.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Passport Applications

Q. What is the quickest way to renew my passport?

The Passport Service processes Passport Online applications as a priority. Applying online is the fastest way of getting your passport. You can renew online from anywhere in the world, as long as your previous Irish passport is no more than 5 years out of date. You do not have to verify your identity when renewing your passport using the online service. You can track the progress of your passport online. In general, adult renewals when all the information on your passport is the same as your previous passport are processed within 10 working days.

If you are renewing using a paper application form through the Post Passport provided by An Post it will take significantly longer. The current estimated turnaround time for paper applications is 8 weeks but this is not a service guarantee and you are advised not to book flights until you have your passport. This period may be extended at certain times of the year due to increased application numbers. Once you have made a paper-based application, it cannot normally be expedited and the Passport Office cannot return your supporting documents to you before the application is complete. It is important to note that if you have already submitted a paper application, you cannot apply online.

Updates on services and the latest turnaround times are available on the Passport Service's website https:// www.dfa.ie/passports/

Q. My partner is applying for a Passport for the first time. Can this be done on-line?

Passport Online is open to all applicants. However, it is important to note that first time applications are complex and require additional time to process. This is because the Passport Office has to verify all documents submitted and to ensure the identity of the applicant. These applications can take approximately 20 working days to process. To apply on-line, you will need the following:

• a digital photograph,

• an email address

• credit/debit card.

You will need access to a printer for first time applicants and applications for children.

Q. Can I apply for my passport in person at the Passport Office?

The counter service at the Passport Office is mainly designed to help people who need their passports urgently, and don’t have enough time to apply in other ways. In these cases, you should book an appointment with the Pass-

port Office in Dublin or Cork. Applications made in person are more expensive than applying online or through Post Passport

Q. My sister is living abroad. Can she use the on-line service to renew her passport when she is outside of Ireland?

You can renew online from anywhere in the world, as long as your previous Irish passport is no more than 5 years out of date.

Q. How much does it cost to apply for a passport?

Standard 10-year, 34-page passport

Passport Online - €75 (+ €5 postage if you live outside Ireland)

Passport Express - €80 (+€9.50 fee)

In person - €95

Large 10-year 66-page passport

Passport Online – €105 ((+ €5 postage if you live outside Ireland)

Passport Express - €110 (+€9.50 fee)

In person – €125

An Post also offers a 'Family Application' option where up to 4 passport applications can be enclosed in one envelope. The additional charge for a Family Application is €16

Q. What happens if I lose my passport or it is stolen?

If you are an Irish citizen living in Ireland and you have lost your Irish passport, or it has been stolen, you must let the Passport Office know immediately and report the loss or theft to the Garda Síochána.

If you lose your passport or it is stolen abroad, you must contact the local police and request a written statement that you have reported the loss of your passport. The Passport Service will not provide you with a new travel document without a police report. In addition you must contact your nearest Irish embassy or consulate. They may be able to give you a replacement passport that will let you finish your trip or an emergency travel document that will get you home

If you are in a country where there is no Irish representation, you may contact an embassy or consulate of another EU member state. In some cases, the embassy or consulate of another EU Member State may issue you with an EU Emergency Travel Document (ETD).

Q. What happens if I need to renew my passport in an emergency?

A. In the case of an emergency situation such as the death or serious illness of an immediate family member abroad, or for emergency medical treatment of the applicant, you should contact the Passport Services Customer Service Hub. The telephone number for the Customer Service Hub is 01 671 1633

Kerry out for revenge in Cork

League champions travel across the county bounds in search of provincial glory

MUNSTER SFC FINAL

Cork v Kerry

Sunday at 3.30pm

Mallow | Live on Clubber.tv

Division 1 champions Kerry will be out for revenge on Sunday when they take on fierce rivals Cork in the final of the Munster Senior Football Championship.

The last meeting between the sides

- three weeks ago in the group stageended in a draw. It was a credible result on paper but in reality it was a match that Kerry should have won. The visitors led by 10 points heading down the stretch at Páirc Uí Chaoimh before a rousing fightback by The Rebels left the sides level at the final horn. Thankfully for Kerry, the outcome of that particular encounter didn’t have major ramifications; victories over Tipperary and Waterford saw them finish level with Cork at the top of the four-

team pool. With first and second in the group advancing to the Munster final, another Cork-Kerry derby was confirmed.

The fact that both finalists will advance to the All-Ireland series regardless of what happens on Sunday means that it’s not quite do-or-die just yet, but there are certain advantages to winning. Firstly, and most importantly, there’s a provincial crown on the line. Cork beat Kerry in last year’s decider and another victory this weekend

RIVALS: Máire O'Callaghan of Cork and Aishling O'Connell of Kerry during last year's Munster final at the Fitzgerald Stadium. Cork won by five points.

would make it five Munster titles in a row.

Winning is a habit and getting one over on the old enemy will stand Declan Quill and Darragh Long’s team in good stead heading into June.

There is also the small matter of seeding. Winning Munster will see Kerry advance to the All-Ireland group stage as first seeds. They will slot into Group D alongside Connacht runners-up Galway and Tipperary. If they lose to Cork, they will find themselves in Group C alongside the Leinster champions (Dublin or Meath) and Cavan. The top two teams in each group of four will qualify for the quarter-finals.

Although, having said all that, being a second seed didn’t hinder Kerry too much in 2022. They topped their group and made it all the way to the All-Ireland. Plus they have already beaten both Dublin in Meath in 2023. In reality, they should be fearing no one. First things first, though. The challenge of Cork in Mallow. It promises to be a full-blooded affair.

Cup success for Celtic

There was cause for celebration on the double for Killarney Celtic last Sunday as both their youths and senior teams captured silverware in Tralee.

The youths enjoyed a comprehensive victory over Killorglin in the Premier A league final with Eoghan Crowley (two), Dara O’Shea, Jason O’Sullivan and Cathal Kelly all finding the target in a 5-1 win at Mounthawk Park.

A little later at the same ground, the club’s senior team had a resounding win against Tralee Dynamos in the final of the

League Cup. A 21st-minute rocket from the boot of Wayne Sparling sent Celtic on their way and further strikes by Witness Odirile and Cathal O’Shea (penalty) helped secure a 3-0 win. Veteran captain John McDonagh accepted the trophy on behalf of his teammates. Celtic can now look forward to their Greyhound Bar KO Cup final on Sunday. They will take on the same team at the same venue at 6pm. Their attention will then turn to a mouthwatering Premier A league final against crosstown rivals Killarney Athletic. That match has been fixed for Friday, June 2 at 7.30pm.

The Sunday Game

Maye navigated a competitive field at the U23 grade to reach the final, but his All-Ireland hopes appeared to be slipping away when he trailed European finalist Aaron Doherty of Cork by two frames to six. The Killarney player battled back impressively, however, and he eventually prevailed 7-6 to clinch the title.

Matthew is still only 21 years of age and last year he won the All-Ireland Junior Championship. Following his latest victory he has now shown himself to be one of the top players in the country for

Another Kerry Pool Association representative, Darragh Breen, had a great run by making it to both the All-Ireland Junior final and the U18 Singles final. With 410 competitors in the junior section, reaching the final was an outstanding achievement. Darragh has put in a huge amount of time and dedication to the game in the last couple of years and he is now reaping the reward of that work.

Over 800 participants from 27 counties took part in this year’s championships. Kerry had 36 players in total – more than they ever had before – with one team in the intermediate section and two teams in the junior section. Kerry also had two Over 50 teams and an U23 side.

ALL-IRELAND WINNER: KIllarney's Matthew Maye is the All-Ireland U23 pool champion.

OPINION

Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues

Mayo defeat could break or make Kerry

The worst thing I can say about Kerry’s performance against Mayo on Saturday last is that it reminded me of the game against Tyrone in 2021. You’ll recall that Peter Keane’s team came up terribly short in that All-Ireland semi-final as they were ambushed by a hungry, tuned in, physically imposing opponent. The result marked the end of Keane’s tenure. There was an acceptance that something had to change.

I remember writing at the time that I felt that Kerry needed to cultivate a ruthless defensive culture if they wanted their undoubted talent to translate into success. They had to revel in the dirty work – breaks, tackles, tracking back –and get total buy-in from 1 to 36 in that endeavour.

In fairness to the returning Jack O’Connor and his management team, and in fairness to the players themselves, that’s exactly what happened last season. They built a solid structure around central pillars Jason Foley and Tadhg Morley, and to a man they defended as though their lives depended on it. They showed a ravenous appetite for graft that was rarely seen prior to O’Connor’s return.

For all their flair in attack, with the brilliance of the Cliffords and Seánie Shea often grabbing the headlines, it was the mean defensive record (just three goals conceded in 13 games) that set the tone for a season that ended with a long-awaited All-Ireland title in July.

For a number of reasons, doing it all again the following year was always going to be difficult. We knew that every rival would up their game. We knew the revamped championship structure would add an extra layer of uncertainty. And we knew that back-to-back All-Irelands are rare.

Another sizeable question that mark hung over Kerry was the group’s psychological state. Would they have the same desire to do it all again? The same all-or-nothing mindset that fuelled the defensive culture that brought Sam back to The Kingdom? Not many teams come back for more with the same intensity. It’s a notoriously hard thing to do.

When the team faltered at the beginning of this season, there were numerous mitigating factors for their below-par

performances. Their pre-season was short. They hadn’t the training done. They were missing key players. Conditions were poor. Some opponents were playing ultra defensive football. The league was down their list of priorities. That’s what was jarring about last Saturday. All those excuses no longer apply, yet their performance was well below what they’re capable of. Were it not for superb displays by goalkeeper Shane Ryan and the awe-inspiring David Clifford, the margin of defeat could easily have been three times as wide.

Disappointingly, the loss signalled the end of the team’s proud undefeated home record that had stretched back to 1995.

If you’re trying to explain what happened on the day, you might point to the fact that Mayo were very good. That much is true. Kevin McStay’s outfit were brilliant and they look like a completely different animal with Aidan O’Shea thriving at full forward. But I don’t believe for a second that they are, all of a sudden, streets ahead of Kerry, and that Kerry should be getting outplayed by them to the extent that we saw on Saturday.

You might also point to Kerry’s tactical set-up. Jack O’Connor admitted in the aftermath that his full back line was left exposed – especially from Mayo’s long kickouts - so maybe there are structural issues that need to be addressed at this week’s video session.

But, for me, that question mark that hangs over Kerry’s psychological state is still a big one. What Mayo did the last day wasn’t rocket science. They made hard runs and laid the ball off to the man in the better position, and they took their shooting chances when they came. But from the outset it was clear that Kerry were flat and in danger of losing.

On a number of occasions when a Mayo player made a burst forward and a Kerry man was forced to turn and track, he was left behind almost instantly. Head down. Reacting rather than anticipating. Struggling.

Mayo’s full forward line of O’Shea, Ryan O’Donoghue and James Carr scored 11 points between them and too many of those shots were given up easily. With

runners punching holes at will, Kerry’s full back line got little-to-no assistance from their teammates out the field (although, having said that, they won’t be happy with the standard of their 1 v 1 defending either).

There were other issues too - Kerry’s midfielders didn’t seem to impact the game at all and their forwards were sloppy in possession – but it was the lack of meanness and competitiveness without the ball that really furrowed brows on the terrace. Is that fierce desire to win still there this year? That appetite for work? That drive? That ruthlessness? Or was last year’s success enough for them, for the

time being at least?

Look, it’s not the end of the world, or even the end of the season. The champs are down but not out. There is a way back.

In many ways, the harrowing loss to Tyrone that broke them in 2021 was the making of the Kerry team that scaled such great heights in 2022. They learned their lessons and came back with a vengeance.

They have less time to turn things around now, mid-season, but this latest setback against Mayo has a similar feel to it. It could break them or it could make them. We’ll just have to wait and see how they react.

Kingdom fail the

This was not in the prepared and prescribed script. Mayo 1-19 Kerry 0-17. It was unexpected. Kerry were not supposed to lose an unbeaten 28-year championship record in Killarney. They had shown some of the brilliant play that earned them the Sam Maguire in 2022 by demolishing Clare in Limerick a few weeks ago.

On Saturday last it was the perfect event, the clash of the league champions against the All-Ireland champions. The wide-open spaces of the Fitzgerald Stadium with over 23,000 spectators enjoying brilliant sunshine and no wind factor worth talking about.

Thousands of Mayo supporters travelled to Killarney, boosting the local economy in a big way, hoping that they would not be at the receiving end of a backlash from Kerry after that awful display earlier in the league. Kerry could bite back and run in several goals as they did so against hapless Clare.

The lovely Mayo supporters beside me wondered if their men would be able to limit the best footballer in the country to 2-6 and which three would they use to

mark him? That and more since a number of Mayo regulars were still not back to full fitness. Those were their pre-match doubts. No wonder, even Job would not match the patience of Mayo supporters longing for an All-Ireland since 1951.

REALITY

So much for the expectations. The reality was very different. Mayo not alone beat Kerry fair and square but bossed them, ignoring the reputations of nearly all of the Kerry team, not just the starting 15, but also the subs brought who made no difference whatsoever.

Kerry were off the pace, going through the motions, playing catchup throughout. No excuses, playing a true footballing team in perfect conditions. They did not perform, the poorest championship display since that terrible day in Croke Park in the All-Ireland semi-final where they didn't raise a gallop against Meath.

On Saturday they didn’t even get into a trot. It was one of those awful days for the Kerry players and management.

Just like bad petrol if you had the misfortune to have it in the tank. Misfiring,

pinging, increased emissions, making for an unsteady journey. It was not the day to go for the NCT test, but it can be a blessing in disguise. The tester has identified why and where the green and gold car failed.

Jack O’Connor and the management team will have the re-test within 10 days. They made no excuses. How could they? Sure, only two Kerry players performed well, and they had to be very good with colleagues not performing to anything like basic levels.

Shane Ryan and David Clifford played at the level one expects from All-Stars; they were magnificent. Both goalkeepers excelled. Indeed, by the 11th minute Kerry should have been 2-3 in arrears only for the brilliance of the Rathmore man. Now for the positives. A good team does not go from hero to zero in one game such as this one. Jack will be glad to be able to able to address the deficiencies shown up on last Saturday afternoon’s NCT and it was just that. Spell out the acronym, National Championship Test. No real worries for Kerry about any trapdoor, as yet. Failing to Cork away and

playing Louth at a neutral venue are the ideal opportunities to restore normal service. Kerry are not out of the championship and will qualify for the stage when all the top teams come into play.

SLUGGISH

One may be inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to Dylan Casey on what was his first big day in championship fare. He was well beaten by Aidan O'Shea who went on to earn Man of the Match. All the backs were sluggish. Foley did best. Midfield was wiped out and never succeeded in winning the kickouts when the respective goalkeepers had to go long. Hardly adequate has been the way I have described the Gaeil duo of Barry and O’Connor. Corrective adjustment has helped by using Paudie Clifford as a third midfielder. Kerry need Clifford playing the Paul Galvin role of forager picking up loose and dirty ball.

What surprised me is that Kerry did not try out Barry Dan O’Sullivan for the second half. I felt that he was the man Kerry needed at midfield. His work commitments as a very busy vet have not

x

NCT

deterred him from giving his all in the training sessions. Adrian Spillane may have been entered to supplement the midfield inadequacy, but that did not work out. Up front David Clifford was the only threat. He was well marked but even he could not penetrate though several defenders who blocked his goal bound shots on two occasions. He also had some misses for points, but showed the characteristics of a really great player who shoots wide and then, unfazed, strikes for a few magical points.

Readers of this column will be well aware of the potential weakness at centre-forward. Too often in the past Kerry’s hopes of an All-Ireland were cruelly exposed by a player from the opposition sprinting through the unguarded middle unchallenged and creating mayhem for the opened Kerry defence. Those players have to re-enact the fate of the little Dutch boy who bravely put his finger into the hole in the dam to prevent a flooding disaster.

Kerry would not have won last year’s All-Ireland only for that miraculous

Former Kerry goalkeeper

Eamonn Fitzgerald reflects on a disappointing opening match in the All-Ireland group stage

last-minute free by Seánie O’Shea to beat Dublin and pave the way for a place in the final. We’ll never forget it and be grateful for his deed. Not since Cúchulainn… and all that. He did have a very poor final.

He is a fine player, but I believe that he does not have the legs and pace for that central position and his man coming forward is causing huge difficulties. On top of that he is no longer the 100% certainty of a scorer from a free. He missed a very easy first one early on against Mayo. When he was forced to chase his man back in the second half, he was left yards behind and the same could be said for so many of the other Kerry players.

I expect about 12 of those who started last week will start again against Cork. There will be some positional changes and ‘new caps’. How many new options appeared throughout the County Championship and league? Very few. So it will be most of the same personnel, but re-fired, re-cast and re-invented.

The NCT was a blessing in disguise.

FC 3 Dingle 0. Our girls had a fantastic win over Dingle in the U12 Shield Semi Final. A brilliant performance by our squad of 16 girls, each and every one of them giving it everything. Our defence was outstanding. Dingle were pressing hard throughout the game but with clearances off the line and Shauna O'Riordan in goals pulling off some superb saves, Dingle couldn't find the back of the net. Our midfielders and strikers never stopped working. The goals came from Julia Casey and Anna Lenihan saw us through to the final against Ballyhar Dynamos. Thanks to everyone for making the long trip back to Dingle and to Dingle Utd for a very sporting game.

AGM Update: The club are close to finalising a very significant and exciting deal in the coming weeks. Therefore, the AGM scheduled for May 30th is deferred. A new date will be announced in due course.

Killarney Legion GAA

SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE: A close shave in this Division 1 County league game played at a damp and muggy Milltown on Sunday. Ryan O'Grady's late free kept the unbeaten run going but only after a struggle with a determined home side. The sides were level on no less than nine occasions with neither side ever establishing a healthy dominance. Ryan O’Grady, Finbarr Murphy and Eoghan O’Sullivan made it 0-5 a piece at half time, with Legion having played with the aid of a slight breeze. Podge O'Connor and Padraig Lucey responded to early second half points from Milltown, and it was tit for tat for the remainder of the game. Ryan O'Grady and Cian Gammell nudged their side 0-10 to 0-9 ahead but two points from Milltown/ Castlemaine had them looking like winners. But in some late drama substitute Will Shine was upended in the vicinity of the large parallelogram and after a consultation between the match officials a close in free was awarded, which was duly converted, closely followed by the final whistle. The Senior B team welcomed Firies to Direen at the same time but unfortunately, they went down on a 1-15 to 1-9 scoreline. Next up is the visit of Kilcummin to Direen in Division 1 while the Division 6 team are heading to Strand Road. Both games are down for the June Bank Holiday weekend.

U21 COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: We made a return to the County U21 Championship after a hiatus last Wednesday evening in Asdee. Final Score: North Kerry 2-18 Killarney Legion 1-11.

Spa GAA

FIXTURES: In Round 7 of the Credit Union SFL, we played away to our neighbours in Kilcummin. It was a victorious finish for our Senior men's side after a close start with both teams putting points on the board in the early minutes of the game. Spa impressively composed themselves having narrowed a 4-point lead to only 1 point in the 34th minute of the game after a goal by Kilcummin. The sides were level on the 40th minute but this changed when we secured a goal that turned the game

around again for us in the 43rd minute. The scoreline ended Spa 1-14 to Kilcummin 1-10. This coming weekend we will play Gneeveguilla in Round 8 of this competition at home in Spa.

LOTTO: Jackpot €7,400. Numbers Drawn 4, 7, 25, 26. No winner. Lucky dip winners: Roger Kelleher, Emmetts Tce, Paddy Hayes, Ballaugh, Dave Herlihy, Lissivigeen, Adam Herlihy, Killarney. Next week's jackpot €7,600.

KILLARNEY CLUB 7S: The Men's and Ladies All-Ireland Gaelic Football 7-A-Side Tournament is just around the corner. Everyone in Spa GAA is looking forward to welcoming those of you that have already purchased a ticket and want to remind you all that there is still time to purchase your ticket in advance also. It's a weekend of entertainment on and off the pitch that's not to be missed. It takes place next week, June Bank Holiday Weekend, Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th.

CONGRATULATIONS: Well done to the U14 girls and their Management who were successful in obtaining the U14 7B NCP League title after defeating Austin Stacks last Sunday evening in John Mitchells

ITEMS FOR NOTES: Any items for the Spa notes please contact the club PRO on 085 7762411 or pro.spa.kerry@gaa. ie before 8pm on Sundays.

Dr Crokes GAA

SFL DIV 1: Dr Crokes 0-15 Rathmore 0-12. Another win at home for our senior team sees them top of the table as things stand. The game began in a lively fashion and kept the pace from beginning to end. Mikey Casey opened the scoring inside the 4th minute of play with his first of five first half points, all of which came from play. Rathmore’s number 14, Fionn Murphy was equally impressive in front of goal scoring 4 frees in the first 30 minutes. Half time Dr. Crokes 0-08 Rathmore 0-06. The second half played much like the first, with high intensity and fast-moving football. Alex Hennigan was unlucky not to have added the maximum to our tally when a strong strike veered just north of the upright. Down the other end of the pitch Shay O’Meara was kept busy, making a number of outstanding saves throughout the game. Mikey Casey finished with 6 points to his name. Overall, this was a great win and puts us in a comfortable position as we enter round 8.

U15 COUNTY LEAGUE: Our U15 boys won the County League Div 2 Shield on Wednesday last after overcoming Churchill by 3 points in a very competitive game in Keel.

LGFA U14 (NON-COUNTY PLAYERS) FINAL: Dr Crokes 5-12 John Mitchells 2-4. We came up against a very strong and talented John Mitchels side in Tralee on Sunday evening. Despite the result the girls never gave up and never stopped

trying to play. Saoirse O’Donoghue gave a fine display at the back, Amy Keating covered most of the pitch and Keva McCarthy had a super performance, scoring 1-4 in total.

Fossa GAA

COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 3: John Mitchels 1-9 Fossa 1-12. Fossa hung on for a well-deserved win in this game which was very well reffed by Duagh's Tadgh Murphy. Fossa started brightly and despite playing against the breeze sailed in the lead playing sharp fast football and were leading by 5 points at HT. An Emmett O'Shea goal early in the second half put Fossa in the driving seat but a Mitchels fight back had Fossa hanging on in the end and they were very happy to hear the final whistle. On the day Fossa had some good performances, 2 points by wing back Rian Colleran capped an excellent performance, Eoin Talbot (0-1), Matthew Rennie, the Doyle Brothers and Emmett O'Shea 1-7 but pick of the bunch was Sam Buckley who gave a massive defensive performance. Fossa would also like to thank John Mitchels for the hospitality shown and the trays of sandwiches in the dressing room after the game were greatly appreciated. Up next in 2 weeks - we have our near neighbours, Listry visiting - time and venue to be confirmed.

COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 6: Fossa B 1-7 Valentia 0-12. Fossa were narrowly beaten, with Dean Sheehan again outstanding in goals.

U13 BOYS: County League. Game 2. Phase 2. Fossa hosted Churchill this Sunday in the second round of the county league Division 5A. The Fossa boys showed some great heart and fought tirelessly in what was an excellent team performance and, in the end, Fossa won out on a scoreline of 4-12 to 2-7.

Kilcummin GAA

CREDIT UNION CO LEAGUE DIV 1: Spa 1-14 Kilcummin 1-10. A goal by Cian Foley brought us level with twelve minutes left after trailing 0-7 to 0-4 at half time but Spa finished the stronger and a goal by Mike Foley clinched the points in this keenly contested derby. Donal Maher (0-1), Sean O’Leary and Paul O’Shea were prominent as our forwards found it hard to make space against a well organised defence. Team: Brendan Kealy, Damien O’Leary, Dara O’Callaghan, James Williams, Sean O’Leary, James Williams, Donal Maher, Danny Cronin (0-1), Paul O’Shea (0-4F), Mark O’Shea, Philip Casey (0-1), Cian Foley (1-0), Eoghan O’Donovan (0-1), Noel Duggan, Philip O’Leary. CREDIT UNION CO LEAGUE DIV 6: Kilcummin 0-11 Kerins O’Rahillys 3-12. EAST KERRY MINOR LEAGUE: Kilcummin 2-15 Dr Crokes 3-10. Goals by Gavin Cronin and Colm Janot and a last-minute point by Ronan McCarthy helped us to this great win over Dr Crokes. Best on the day were Sean Maher, Kieran Nagle, Gavin Morrissey and Sean Doolan. Rathmore 5-06 Kilcummin 3-11. A late goal by Colm Janot after excellent work by Odhran O’Shea wasn't enough to secure victory and we lost out by a single point.

Kilcummin

KILCUMMIN LOOKING GOOD: Extra seating in Natures Garden. Kilcummin Looking Good have added two beautiful seats to the Kilcummin Millennium Park, located in the heart of Kilcummin village. The new seats have been funded through the Community Support Fund, administered through Kerry County Council. This biodiversity park is at the forefront of biodiversity provision in the area. It’s a real focal point within Kilcummin Village and advocates and indeed champions the biodiversity model, in particular to the children of the area. The two new seats will give further opportunity for people to take time out of their busy days and immerse themselves in all that nature has to offer. The importance of the Community Support Fund is acknowledged in progressing smaller projects, such as this one that would otherwise not happen at all. The Kilcummin Millennium Park is open to all within the community and visitors 7 days a week.
