Shaq remembered as a "Killarney treasure

The town came to a standstill on Tuesday as a man described as everyone’s friend was laid to rest.

Caoimhín ‘Shaq' O'Donoghue passed away on May 9 after a short illness. The Ardshanavooley man was a muchloved character who was best known for his role in security and guest relations in the towns hospitality sector.

However, his life transcended all aspects of town life, from the hospitality sector to sports clubs.

The lifelong member of St Paul’s Basketball club was called after NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal .

Dr Crokes GAA Club was his other passion.

Members of both St Paul’s and the GAA club provided a guard of honour as his funeral cortege left St Mary’s Cathedral.

The Liverpool FC anthem ‘You Will Never Walk Alone’ echoed in the background as mourners huddled in the spring rain to pay their final respects.

Motorcycles were his other love and looked forward to attending the Killarney BikeFest each June. His motorbike friends provided a cavalcade along the

streets of his home town.

He was a popular figure amongst guests and colleagues at the Killarney Park Hotel where he worked as a porter.

His requiem mass was led by Fr Kieran O’Brien.

"He was well-liked and respected and he left a mark and a void that can’t be filled,” Fr O’Brien told the congregation.

"He was everyone’s friend and he had time for everyone.”

Moving and emotionally charged tributes poured in for the charismatic and dedicated Killarney sportsman who was laid to rest in Aghadoe Cemetery on Tuesday.

A former teammate in both codes and lifelong friend Brian Clarke, remarked: “Shaq cheered up each person he met along his path in life. His likes are so seldom to be found – just a pure, down-toearth Killarney treasure.”

Another close friend and former teammate, Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan, said: “Caoimhín was a marvellous person, so positive and great fun and his loss is just devastating."

He added that he has many happy memories of Caoimhin from basketball trips that they went on.

Another great pal and former teammate,

James Weldon, described Caoimhín as an incredible man.

“He loved to chat basketball at any opportunity and was so insightful on how he thought about the game and life in general,” he said.

Former All-Ireland winning Kerry manager and Dr Crokes coach Pat O’Shea, who also played National League Basketball with Shaq, described him as an extremely knowledgeable sports coach and an equally talented player.

“A gentle giant, he was a friend to everyone,” he said.

St Paul’s Basketball Club Chairman, Paul Sheehan, who coached Caoimhín from a young age, said everybody was devastated to hear of his untimely passing.

“Caoimhín served the club in so many roles with distinction, as a player, coach and officer, and he will be greatly missed,” Paul said.

Kerry GAA Chairman and fellow Dr Crokes clubman, Patrick O’Sullivan, said that Caoimhín was a gentle giant who never had a bad word to say about anyone.

Former Mayor of Killarney and neighbour, Seán O’Grady, described Caoimhín as a great ambassador for Killarney. “He has gone on much too soon,” he said.

Former GAA President Seán Kelly MEP said he was sad to learn of Caoimhín’s death. He was a student of Kelly’s in St Brendan’s College over 30 years ago.

“Caoimhín was a lovely guy with a heart of gold,” said the MEP.

The son of Margaret and the late Timmie O’Donoghue, Caoimhín is survived by his mother, brothers Shane, Cormac and Timothy, sister Sheena, extended family, colleagues and a large circle of friends.

“Ukrainians want work, earn and pay taxes here”

local election candidate

A locally-based Ukrainian refugee running for local election in the Killarney Municipal District has outlined her hopes for her fellow refuges if she gets elected.

Natalya Krasnenkova was one of the first arrivals to Killarney following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2024.

Since her arrival she has been a community activist, has graduated from Kerry College and its Migrant Leadership Academy and now works for NEWKD. She has raised concerns over the government’s decision to cut social welfare payments but stressed that the Ukrainian community in Kerry are not looking for state handouts.

She is concerned that reduction of payments will hurt the most vulnerable in society like pensioners and young mothers.

“Ukrainians would be happy to work, earn and pay taxes here in Ireland and not depend on social benefits. Dependence on government payments is not our way of life,” she said.

“But now Ukrainians are facing several difficulties - learning English in a short time, uncertainty about the recognition of diplomas and then finding a job. As the war continues, I think we in Ireland need a more medium to long-term strategy to help integrate Ukrainian professionals into the workforce and into society, however long that takes.”

“The community would like more help with the ongoing challenges of learning English in a short period of time, uncertainty about the recognition of some qualifications, starting a new business or finding work, especially in parts of Ire-

land where they have been employed.”

“You know, 50% of Ukrainians in Ireland have higher education. We want to use these qualifications and Ireland can use it for the greater good. I think this is the way forward.”

“Everyone would benefit from such a strategy - both Ukrainians and the Irish economy. Ukrainians want to work, pay their own way and pay taxes, open a new business in Ireland and not depend on social benefits.”

This year, the event will kick off from Tullamore, County Offaly and the first stage finish will be in Kilmallock.

This will be the first-ever Rás Tailteann stage to finish in the Limerick town.

lorglin between 12.30 and before heading over the infamous, Bealach Óisín Pass and onto Sneem for a stage finish favoured by the Rás Mumhan every Easter weekend.

Calls for a slip road at Daly’s roundabout

Independent Cllr Martin Grady has called for a slip lane to be built at Daly’s Supervalu at the entrance on the N22 to ease pressure on traffic heading towards Cork.

At a recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District Meeting he called for an extra lane at the location.

He said: “This is having an impact on other roads such as the traffic coming from

Park Road, the By-Pass and down from Spa, the N22 accommodates high volumes of traffic on a daily basis. this would alleviate a lot of traffic build up coming off the roundabout towards Cork.”

A Kerry County Council official replied: “New road improvement proposals have been developed along this section of the N22, these proposals are due to go to public consultation mid 2024.”

Potential to use HSE land for Killarney social housing

The Land Development Agency will meet next week to discuss the potential of using Health and Safety Executive lands for social housing in Killarney.

Elected members of each of the Kerry municipal districts, along with County Manager Moira Murrell and Kerry County Council’s director of housing Martin O’Donoghue met, online, with housing minister Darragh O’Brien.

The purpose of this meeting was to discuss options for housing on publicly owned lands in Kerry for potential social and affordable housing developments,

and in particular all HSE owned lands and property in Killarney.

Cllr Brendan Cronin pushed for HSE owned land to be used for the construction of social housing. For years he has been calling on the unused St Finan’s site to be used for such purposes.

“I welcome this meeting as I have been continuously pushing for the Land Development Agency and Kerry County Council to engage and examine suitable sites to deliver social and affordable housing in our Municipal District,” said Cronin. During the online meeting Minister O’Brien confirmed that the LDA will meet again next week to discuss this matter.

Family Solidarity Day Festival in aid of Palestine

A Family Palestinian Solidarity Day Festival will take place on June 1 to raise funds for meal packages for displaced families in Gaza.

The event will take place at Spillane’s Bar in Headford and will begin at 2pm.

There will be Palestinian themed Art workshops for kids with Tracy from The Art House Killarney.

The Dingle Druid will perform a family inclusive, heart opening fire ceremony.

KASI will host a community style picnic table and will have African drummers performing on site.

Other activities include a bake sale, bouncing castles, food vendors, ice cream vans and face painting for all the kids, along with incredible musical performances and guest speakers to be announced closer to the event.

“Since late last year solidarity groups have been establishing themselves throughout the county with regular vigils for the people of Palestine now taking place once a week in almost every big town in the county, Tralee, Kenmare, Caherciveeen, Listowel, Killorglin and Killarney..” said organiser Sally McMonagle.

“Killarney for Palestine and Kerry Friends of Palestine have been proactive in fundraising and raising educational awareness for the plight of the Pales-

tinians who are currently experiencing a genocide, forced famine and ethnic cleansing at the hands of the Israeli government.”

Killarney for Palestine meet every Sunday at 12pm outside the courthouse opposite the Friary and is open for everyone.

Last week hundreds of people gathered at the market cross for a memorial vigil to highlight the 14,000 innocent children brutally murdered.

The Procession walked silently down New Street accompanied by fiddle player Nicole Lonergan, to the unmarked children's famine grave in the grounds of the Cathedral.

The MacAcademy children’s drama group sang ‘True colours’ and local children walked on stage carrying images of some Palestinian children of the same age who lives were tragically cut short in this genocide.

Palestinian Poems were read by Dr John Geaney and Donal O’Riordan while Shinann Buckley O'Sullivan sang a heart breaking Irish lullaby accompanied by John Buckley on the uilleann pipes.

€1.6 million allocated for Fossa road repairs

Funding totalling nearly €1.6 million has been allocated to three different road projects in the Fossa area.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland have allocated funding to Kerry County council for three specific locations on the N22 Fossa Road.

A total of €1 million has been allocated for construction of traffic calming measures, two pedestrian crossings and complete road resurfacing. from the Golden Nugget Junction to the Gap Cross.

A further €240,000 has been allocated for road resurfacing from Laccabane Village towards the Liebherr Factory and €350,000 allocated for road resurfacing works from Killalee towards Beaufort Bridge Junction.

“This funding is badly needed as the

surface of this very busy road has deteriorated at these locations and the construction of the pedestrian crossings, particularly at Fossa NS is long overdue,” said Cllr Brendan Cronin who has pushing for these works for many years.

"Jarveys

should be allowed to transfer licence to family"

Retiring jarveys should be allowed to transfer their operating licence to family members, Cllrs Maura Healy Rae has stated.

Under current bylaws state that: “in the event that an existing licence holder should cease to hold his or her licence, then it shall automatically revert to the Council.”

At a recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District Cllr Healy Rae said: “ Kerry County Council should to take into consideration the family tradition of Jarveys in the Killarney Area and to allow the transfer of a jarvey license from one generation to the next, from one family member to another when a person retires or dies.”

She also asked if there is a waiting list for jarvey licence application.

A council official replied: “ Bye-Laws regulating the operation of Horse Drawn Hackney Carriages 2010 [state] in the event that an existing licence holder should cease to hold his/her licence, then it shall automatically revert to the Council and where the number of applications for

a licence exceeds the number of licences determined by the Council the allocation of licences shall be determined by lot .”

“Kerry County Council is not permitted to operate waiting lists for the issuance of Jarvey licences. “

The official added: ““A review of the 2010 Bye-Laws is currently underway by Killarney Municipal District, Kerry County Council must comply with European Union competition regulations and legislation in regard to the issuing of licences.”

The updating of Killarney bylaws, which effect everything from parking to jarvey licencing has been ongoing for years and has been a contentious issue within the Council chamber during the life time of the current elected assembly.

“This review is going on a long time,” added Healy Rae.

“this is a serious issue affecting many Jarveys who have been in contact with me and to date the review hasn’t taken place, if re-elected on June 7 I promises the Jarveys that I will continue to follow up on this issue with Kerry County Council.

“They started their All Ireland journey on March 23 at County Scór Sinsir in Ballybunion. A special mention to our Scor officer Michael Ahern who works hard behind the scenes. “

“The All Ireland was held at the INEC, Killarney on May 10. This was nearly the same team that defended their title except for Darragh Brosnan who received

his first senior title. Darragh is the holder of the current Scor na nOg All Ireland title.

“A huge achievement for such a talented young dancer. The other seven dancers are the holders of their second Scór Sinsear Rince Seit title.

“This is not overnight that these titles were achieved as they’ve been dancing with the Mangan School of Dancing from the age of four.

¡Delicioso! Spanish students

sizzle with local chef, crafting culinary masterpieces

In a flavourful fusion of culture and culinary artistry, 2nd and 3rd year Spanish students from Killarney Community College recently had the unique opportunity to delve into the secrets of pizza making with a seasoned local chef from Tango Street Food, Killarney.

This immersive experience not only ignited their passion for gastronomy but also fostered cross-cultural exchange, gave students an opportunity to practice the language and experience hands-on learning.

Led by Chef Facundo Rodulfo and his partner Pamela Neumann, renowned for their mastery of traditional Argentinian cuisine, the students embarked on a journey through the tantalizing world of pizza preparation. From kneading the perfect dough to selecting the freshest ingredients and mastering the art of the perfect bake, every step was a lesson in precision and passion. Tango Street Food chef explained to the students how they make thier pizza dough, which is naturally fermented in cold during a 48-hours process to make that crispy yet airy texture possible.

Chef Facundo Rodulfo shared his

enthusiasm for guiding the students through the pizza-making process, stating, "It was a pleasure to share my knowledge and passion for pizza with these eager learners. Cooking is not just about following recipes; it's about understanding the ingredients and infusing each dish with love and creativity."

The event was not only a feast for the senses but also a celebration of cultural diversity and community collaboration. Through interactive demonstrations and hands-on participation, the students gained a newfound appreciation for the artistry and craftsmanship behind one of Argentina’s most beloved culinary exports.

"We believe in providing our students with holistic learning experiences that inspire curiosity and creativity," remarked Spanish teacher Edwina Duggan.

As the aroma of freshly baked pizzas filled the air, laughter echoed through the kitchen, underscoring the power of food to unite people across borders and generations.

The students departed with not only newfound culinary skills but also cherished memories filled with learning, laughter, and, of course, delicious pizza.

Department of education visit for digital literacy launch

Last Friday the Killarney Community College was selected by the Department of Education to interview a number of junior and senior cycle students and record a maths and English class in preparation for the launch of a new digital literacy strategy which will be launched by the Minister of Education this month.

Footage from the film crew's visit will be used as part of a promotional

video for said launch. The school was selected after a recent English inspection was commended for their use of digital, literacy and numeracy strategies incorporated by teachers in their classes and lessons. Principal Stella Loughnane noted that "the fact that our school was chosen for the promotion of the new digital strategy is testament to the quality of teaching and learning currently taking place within our classrooms".

Stunning Aurora Borealis dazzles Irish night skies

Killarney, and indeed most of Ireland was treated to a rare and spectacular display of the Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, last week!

The spectacle was due to a powerful solar storm, likely caused by a large sunspot cluster, ejected charged particles towards Earth. These particles interacted with Earth's magnetic field, primarily near the poles and when these charged particles collide with gases in the upper atmosphere, they create the dazzling light displays we know as the Aurora Borealis.

Normally, the Aurora Borealis is most visible in high-latitude regions like Iceland or Norway however, the strength

of this particular solar storm caused the auroras to be visible further south, reaching even Ireland. Reports suggested sightings across the country, with particularly clear views in northern and western counties. While geomagnetic storms can increase the likelihood of seeing the Northern Lights in Ireland, they are still a relatively rare occurrence. Our photographs here were captured by Valerie O’Sullivan, Leslie Rowe Debbie Kelliher and Dan O’Connor.

The recent changes are in bold print throughout.

Support for children is progressing on all fronts; with lower costs for parents; a foundation for better pay and conditions; and a new Childcare Development Agency to drive quality and innovation.

• The New National Childcare Scheme supports all children in childcare registered with Tusla who are at least 24 weeks old through a grant paid to the provider. An hourly grant is paid. From Sept 2024 families using childminders can start to benefit under the scheme.

• The Universal payment up to a child's 15th birthday, paid without a means test will increase by over 50% in Sept 2024 to €2.14/hour or €96.30 per week for the max 45 hours.

• An enhanced grant for those whose household income is under €60,000, {where income excludes taxes, secondary benefits, student grants, pension contributions and a multiple child discount of €4,300 (two children under 15) €8,600 (more than 2 children under 15)}. The hourly rate falls with rising income and rising age (see table below). Outside term time, up to 45 hours care per week can be claimed where both parents are working or studying (enhanced hours), otherwise the max is 20 hours (standard hours). During term time, school or ECCE hours are no longer deducted from what can be claimed.

"Knowledge is a powerful tool, and I'm committed to making it readily available to all"

As an election candidate, I'm committed to serving the needs of my community in every way possible. Recently, I've begun including a comprehensive information leaflet with my campaign materials, focusing on families and careers, increased opportunities, pensions and social welfare, taxation, the cost of living, housing, and healthcare. This decision stems from my firsthand experience with the challenges faced by the people I represent.

On the campaign trail, knocking on doors and engaging with residents, I've consistently encountered concerns about navigating complex life issues. From juggling work and family life to understanding pension plans and social welfare options, the daily realities can be overwhelming. The following information leaflet aims to empower residents with a starting point for tackling these essential matters. It

provides clear explanations and resources on a wide range of topics, from finding childcare options and career training programs to understanding tax brackets and available government housing assistance.

The positive response to the leaflet demonstrates a real need for accessible, easy-to-understand information on the issues impacting everyday life. My goal is not to tell people what to do, but to equip them with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions for themselves and their families.

Building a strong community requires a well-informed and empowered populace. By providing these resources, I hope to contribute to a more secure and prosperous future for everyone in our town. I believe knowledge is a powerful tool, and I'm committed to making it readily available to all.

• Free Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) is available for two years to any child aged more than 2 years and 8 months until they are 5 1/2 or make the transition to primary school, and covers 3 hours daily. An eligible child must enrol in September. A pre-school cannot charge parents extra for the hours covered by the scheme.

• AIM (Access Inclusion Model) supports participation by about 7,000 children with special needs in ECCE, through a range of supports including a trained Inclusion Coordinator, specialist equipment, therapy services, and in some cases funding for classroom support. In 2024, the AIM service is being extended to childcare settings beyond ECCE (See www.pobal.ie).

If a child has a diagnosis of autism, s/he can access 10 hours of home tuition per week from age 21/2, and from age 3 a place in Early Intervention Class (if available) or 20 hours home tuition until school entry.

YouGov Poll reveals public calls for big tech regulation

A recent YouGov poll commissioned by the People vs Big Tech network paints a clear picture: the public wants action against Big Tech's dominance. The survey reveals a strong sentiment for increased regulation across various aspects of these tech giants' operations.

The poll of 4,182 adults in France, Germany and Ireland found that the majority in all three countries wanted the practice of behavioural profiling by default by social media companies to end and recommender systems based on

the profiling to be turned off.

A whopping 70% of respondents expressed discomfort with the use of their sensitive personal data (ethnicity, religion, health) for targeted advertising. This suggests a growing desire for stricter data protection measures.

79% of small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) leaders believe Big Tech platforms like Facebook and Google should face stricter regulations on how they utilise user data for advertising.

This highlights the concern over the dominance of these platforms and their impact on fair competition.

69% of business owners surveyed felt they had no choice but to advertise on Facebook and Google due to their market dominance. This statistic underscores the need for regulations that promote a more level playing field for businesses of all sizes.

The poll goes beyond statistics, revealing a deeper public unease with the power and influence wielded by Big Tech companies. The results align with the People vs Big Tech network's mission to hold these tech giants accountable and advocate for greater user control and transparency.

E-Scooters take to Irish roads with new regulations

Electric scooters, a familiar sight in towns and cities around the world, have finally zipped their way into legal territory on Irish roads. As of May 20th, 2024, thanks to the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023, electric scooters are no longer relegated to private property but there are some rules of the road to follow.

Only e-scooters with a maximum power output of 400 watts, a maximum design speed of 20 kilometers per hour and a maximum weight of 25 kilograms are legal on public roads. You must be 16 years or older to scoot legally and E-scooters are for single riders only. They are restricted to cycle lanes and designated areas and must have working front and rear lights for night-time visibility.

Slipping, sliding and suing

A 74-year-old grandmother and mother of 14 has been jailed for insurance fraud after falsely claiming several times she had slipped and hurt herself on footpaths and in shops.

Winnifred Lawrence from Dublin, was paid over €28,000 for false claims she made in a false name between 2012 and 2014.

Winnifred Lawrence claimed she tripped on footpaths and slipped on a substance both in Tesco and the Book Value bookshop.

She also claimed she had burned her leg on a heater on the 40 bus in O'Connell Street, tripped getting off another 40 bus in Ballyfermot and that she slipped on a cabbage leaf in an Iceland store. She succeeded in three claims and was

paid over €28,310, but was unsuccessful a number of other cases.

IPB Insurance, which among others covers public liability for council footpaths, put together a file and contacted the gardaí. The Garda Economic Crime Bureau began an inquiry and Lawrence pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud.

Afterwards Lawrence said to the judge: "I’m very sorry, it’ll never happen again judge."

"I know Ms Lawrence," the judge replied, "but you have to be punished."

The introduction of e-scooters is seen as a positive step towards promoting greener transportation options in Ireland. These vehicles offer a convenient and potentially faster way to get around town compared to walking, while also reducing reliance on cars.

While e-scooters are now legal, their presence will likely require adjustments from both riders and other road users. Clear signage and designated parking areas will be crucial for a smooth transition. Additionally, with the rise of e-scooters, discussions surrounding helmet use and insurance options are likely to continue.

A new poll has shed light on a hidden aspect of Ireland's housing crisis. According to the survey, a staggering 30,000 households consider themselves "hidden homeless."

This term refers to individuals and families who lack secure housing but are not living on the streets.

Commissioned by the Simon Communities of Ireland and Northern Ireland, the poll has revealed that 24,000 households in the Republic of Ireland — and a further 8,500 households in the North — are currently experiencing the issue of hidden homelessness.

Unlike traditionally homeless individuals, those classified as "hidden homeless" often couch surf, staying with friends or family on a temporary basis. Others may be living in overcrowded or unsuitable accommodations, such as converted sheds or attics. These situa-

tions are precarious and lack the stability of a secure home.

The poll found that 18- to 34-year-olds are most likely to be affected by the issue, which sees people couch-surfing, staying with friends or sleeping in their car. The stark findings highlight a significant problem beyond those readily visible on the streets as it's likely that many of these households are struggling financially, unable to afford rent or secure a mortgage due to rising housing costs.

Simon Communities Wayne Stanley said this information is important because it means they can look into the difference between how those experiencing homelessness and local authorities engage with each other and see what can be improved.

"It tells us that there is a cohort of people there who could be accessing supports or that we could be getting supports to and we need to work out how to reach them," said Mr Stanley.

Amsterdam’s blunt campaign aimed at discouraging UK visitors

The city has launched a new campaign aimed at discouraging a specific type of tourist: those seeking a wild weekend of partying and excess.

The online advertising campaign - initially targeted at British men aged between 18 and 35 - features a series of short videos depicting nights out gone wrong. The 30-second clips are sound tracked by ominous music and police sirens. The first video opens with a bottle smashing to the ground - a tell-tale sign of debauchery. A young male actor, who one assumes is meant to appear drunk, is seen to be stumbling around. He swears at the police, who waste no time cuffing him. He sits in the lock-up, head in hands, contemplating his actions. Was it worth the extra ten jagerbombs?

Probably not.

In another video, A well-dressed - but drug-addled - young man is passed out on a park bench. After an unseen good samaritan tries to wake him, paramedics rush to the scene. The overindulgent tourist is rushed to the hospital, where concerned doctors huddle around.

“Coming to Amsterdam for a messy night + getting trashed = €140 fine + criminal record?” the ads ask followed by a message “Stay away.”

A window of opportunity or a black hole of trouble?

A public art installation aiming to connect the cities has sparked controversy in Dublin and New York City this week.

The "Portals," two circular screens showcasing a live feed of each city, were initially hailed for fostering cultural exchange. However, less than a week after their launch, the project has faced temporary closure due to "inappropriate behaviour."

The Portals, envisioned by Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys, were intended to bridge the gap between Dublin and New York. Tourists and residents alike could wave, interact, and experience a slice of life in the other city. Social media buzzed with positive reactions, showcasing heart-warming moments of con-

nection and playful greetings exchanged across the Atlantic.

However, the honeymoon phase was short-lived. Videos surfaced online depicting instances of exhibitionism, offensive messages displayed on phones held up to the portal, and disruptions aimed at the live feed. This behaviour has prompted concerns about the project's ability to foster a respectful and positive exchange.

Organisers were quick to react and the portals were temporarily shut down while solutions to prevent inappropriate behaviour were explored. Blurring the feed was initially considered but ultimately deemed unsatisfactory. Discussions are ongoing to determine the best way forward.

Government announces changes to Ukrainian welfare payments

The Irish government has announced changes to social welfare payments for Ukrainian refugees living in state-provided accommodation.

This decision has sparked debate, with some praising it for fairness and others expressing concern about its impact on those affected.

Previously, Ukrainian refugees arriving in Ireland received the standard Jobseeker's Allowance of €232 per week. However, the new policy applies a flat rate of €38.80 per week for adults and €29.80 per week for children to all Ukrainians in state-provided serviced accommodation, regardless of their arrival date. This change will be implemented in three months, giving recipients time to adjust.

The government argues that this change promotes "consistency of approach" and ensures everyone receives the same support for basic needs like food and accommodation provided within serviced housing. They deny

claims the change is intended to incentivise Ukrainians to move out of state accommodation or act as a deterrent to future arrivals.

Critics of the decision argue that the lower payment could create financial hardship, particularly for those with families. They also express concern that the new rate might not be enough to cover additional expenses beyond basic needs. Additionally, some question the timing of the change, considering the ongoing war in Ukraine and recent Russian advances in the region of Kharkiv.

Sheahan’s family business acquires The Porterhouse

A landmark Killarney building which houses a hugely popular restaurant has changed hands.

The building at 25-26 Plunkett Street has been bought by Sheahan’s family business who have been leasing the property and running The Porterhouse restaurant since 2011.

It was previously an electrical goods store before it was transformed and became home to the busy casual dining restaurant.

“We would like to thank the O’Leary family for their support over the years. This is a very exciting development for us and we look forward to continuing to build on the success of the business,” said Sinéad Sheahan.

There are close on 60 people employed in The Porterhouse and a recruitment campaign is currently underway to grow the team for the busy 2024 summer season.

The Sheahan family has recently celebrated four decades in the hospitality and retail business, currently employing over 400 people locally.

The family acknowledges that the suc-

cess has been possible because of the very passionate and talented teams involved in each facet of the business.

“We are grateful for our dedicated team, many of whom have been working with us since the beginning of The Porterhouse,” Sinéad said.

“I would like to acknowledge the hard work and commitment of our general manager Edward O’Donoghue, floor manager Trish O’Donoghue and head chef Tadhg Corkery, as well as our wider team who have contributed to making

The Porterhouse what it is today.

“We are also so grateful to the local people who have been loyal customers and we appreciate their support,” Sinéad added.

The Porterhouse continues to trade seven days a week, opening daily from 5pm and the opening hours will be extended in the busier season ahead. The team is currently finalising new menus but loyal customers can rest assured that all the old favourites will remain.

Maxi Zoo to open new Killarney pet store

Maxi Zoo is expanding its presence in County Kerry, with the opening of a new store in Killarney, boasting a state of the art grooming salon and aqua area.

The shop at Deerpark Retail park is in addition to Maxi Zoo’s Tralee store, and is expected to be staffed by 11 people.

A weekend of celebrations is planned at the new Killarney store from Friday May 24. On Saturday and Sunday, May 25 and 26, families and their four-legged friends can expect a variety of in-store activities, including face painting, balloon modellers, a live in-store DJ, giveaways and goodies, plus 20% off everything across the weekend exclusive to the Killarney store.

The red carpet will be rolled out for a ‘Pupparazi and Cat Walk,’ where shoppers can parade their pets and take some photos.

"Maxi Zoo has seen fantastic growth across the country in the last number of years, we now have over 30 stores nationwide with more expansion plans in the coming months. As a proud Kerry

man, I’m especially thrilled to see a second store open in the county. Killarney is a thriving business hub and I’ve no doubt that our offering there will be appealing to pet owners and their furry friends,” said Anthony Cremin, Head of Marketing at Maxi Zoo Ireland.

Since its inception in Ballincollig, County Cork in 2006, Maxi Zoo has evolved into Ireland's largest specialty pet retailer, boasting a diverse range of over 8,000 products for pet owners. With an existing presence in 15 counties, the upcoming opening of the Kerry store is a testament to Maxi Zoo's unwavering commitment to meeting the needs of pet lovers throughout Ireland.

The newly opened store in Killarney will see 11 dedicated staff members added to Maxi Zoo's workforce, contributing to the company's overall employment of over 350 staff in Ireland.

Maxi Zoo has been actively engaged in supporting various animal charities across Ireland since its establishment, raising hundreds of thousands of euros through numerous campaigns.

Fórsa, the second largest union in Ireland and the largest public service trade union, were in Killarney this week. Delegates gathered at the Gleneagle’s INEC to debate a range of issues including the national living wage, the housing crisis and the new public sector pay agreement.

In his address to the conference on Thursday, Fórsa General Secretary Kevin Callinan called for a change in the governments approach when engaging with unions.

"When a relationship is so flawed and unequal, the best thing you can do is leave. I'm not interested in being part of it anymore," Mr Callinan said.

He called for a more “long-term vision” and said that the next round of pay talks in 2026 will be will be tougher than ever. More than 700 delegates gathered in Killarney for the event which ran from which Wednesday to Friday. Around 200 motions were debated on topics including remote working, sick leave, pensions, artificial intelligence and the rise of the far right.

Paul Nagle joins Rally Barbados organising team

Paul Nagle, who twice won Rally Barbados with Kris Meeke, returns to the event this year as the International Safety Delegate.

Since retiring in 2022, Nagle has taken a keen interest in the organisational aspects of the sport and has recently been appointed as the FIA Sporting Delegate and Observer for 10 of the 14 rounds of this year’s European Rally Trophy.

Nagle won Rally Barbados with Meeke in a Toyota Corolla WRC, despite the car running with only two-wheel-drive for the final day, then repeated their victory the following year in a Subaru Impreza WRC S9.

Nagle and Meeke went on to win the Intercontinental Rally Challenge for Peugeot in 2009 before progressing to the World Rally Championship, winning five WRC rounds for Citroen between 2013 and ’18. With the late Craig Breen, he won the Irish Tarmac Championship in 2019 and claimed a string of WRC podiums and top 10 finishes for Hyundai before retiring.

With a background on both sides of the sport – his father Maurice was a co-driver and organiser – Nagle was already considering his future when he attended Rally Barbados last year as Deputy Safety Officer working with Event Director Neil

Barnard and Clerk of the Course Barry Gale.

Since then, he has attended a number of courses to qualify as an FIA Steward.

“When the opportunity came up, I was excited to have the chance to give something back to the sport and to move on a little bit for myself,” said Nagle.

“I was delighted to be part of the team in 2023 and I felt it was an excellent event and I really enjoyed working alongside Neil, Barry and all the officials. They all have great passion for the sport and they put in huge amount of work. It’s a pleasure to be involved with all of them.”

SUDOKU

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9. No math, nothing has to add up –solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

Recently, there has been a lot of media coverage and LinkedIn chatter on toxic work environments.

But what is a toxic work environment, how do we recognise them and how do we survive them?

I found this definition which described a toxic work environment very well - A toxic workplace has overwhelming negative indicators that affect the well-being of those within it.

These are some of the signs and indicators that you might be working in a toxic environment - weak leadership and management, high turnover of staff, low morale, poor, inconsistent and sometimes aggressive communication styles, constantly changing and moving work goals and timelines, zero respect for work boundaries, micromanagement, favouritism by management of some staff while isolating or ignoring others. All of these factors can have a detrimental affect on your physical and mental health.

And what choices do we have? Well, in an ideal world you would leave immediately. But we don’t live in an ideal world and there are mortgages, rent, bills and other commitments.

So what should you do? I would first ask yourself – why are you working in this environment? Is the salary par-

ticularly high? Do you have flexibility around work hours/days? Do you work well with some of the team? Are these reasons good enough to stay put? If they are, well maybe set some boundaries around you and how you work to prevent the toxicity seeping into your life. If there is an annual appraisal process, then that is often the time to raise issues like this. But be warned, if the toxicity is coming top down – i.e. from management then it can be difficult conversation to have.

If there are no good reasons for staying in the role and the toxic environment is beginning to consume you and have a negative impact on your health, then think about finding your next role - begin by up-dating your CV and LinkedIn, speaking to recruitment agencies and looking for a role that you are going to be happy in. This may take time and, in the meantime, try to set some work boundaries and seek some outside support by speaking to friends and family about how everything at work is making you feel.

Jury service KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Jury service is when you are instructed to attend court with other members of the public, so the court can select people to sit on juries for upcoming court cases.

Even though you are called for jury service, you may not actually serve on a jury. If you are selected to serve on a jury, you and the other jurors will hear the evidence in the case, and then decide if the accused person is guilty of an offence. You have an obligation to attend for jury service if you are called to do so. You will be contacted by summons of the County Registrar, and the summons will state that you are obliged to attend for jury service on a particular date.

Who is eligible for jury service?

If you are an Irish citizen aged 18 and over, and are on the Register of Electors you are eligible for jury service, unless you:

• Are involved in any way with the administration of justice. This includes judges, former judges, the President, the Attorney General, the Director of Public Prosecutions, members of the Gardaí and defence forces, prison officers, practising barristers, solicitors, court officers such as registrars, and personnel in government departments involved in matters of justice or the courts.

• Have, or had, a mental illness or mental disability and because of this are staying in a hospital or similar institution, or regularly attend treatment with a medical practitioner

• Are unable to read or have a long-term impairment that means it is not practical for you to serve on a jury

The rules about eligibility for jury service in Ireland are set down in the Juries Act 1976 as amended by the Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2008.

Who is disqualified from jury service?

You are disqualified from jury service if you:

• Have been convicted of a serious offence in Ireland

• Have ever been sentenced to five years or more in prison

• Have been sentenced to three months or more in prison in the last ten years

• Are living in Ireland but are not an Irish citizen.

Who has a right to be excused from jury service?

You have the right to be excused from jury service if you:

• Are aged 65 or over

• Are a member of either House of the Oireachtas, a member of the Council of State, the Comptroller and Auditor General, a Clerk of Dáil Éireann or Seanad Éireann, in Holy Orders, a minister of any religious denomination or community, a member of a monastery or convent, an aircraft pilot, a full-time student or a ship's master

• Provide an important community service, such as a practising doctor, nurse, midwife, dentist, vet or chemist

• Have served on a jury in the last three years, or have been excused by a judge for a certain amount of time after a previous period of jury service

In some cases, people with the following jobs can be excused, however in these cases you must provide certification that your role cannot be postponed or reasonably performed by another person:

• Member of staff of either House of the Oireachtas

• Head of a government department

• Civil servant

• Chief executive officer or employee of a local authority

• Health Service Executive (HSE) employee

• Harbour authority employee

• School teacher

• University lecturer

• Other situations when you can be excused from jury service

You can also be excused from jury service in other situations, for example:

• The County Registrar or the trial judge can excuse you if they are satisfied that there is 'good reason' to do so

• At the end of a case of 'an exceptionally exacting nature', the trial judge can excuse the jury from jury service for as long as they consider suitable

What happens if I don’t attend for jury service?

Under the Juries Act 1976, you can be fined for:

• Failing to attend for jury service without a reasonable excuse

• Being unavailable when called to serve as a juror

• Being unfit for service by reason of drink or drugs

You can also be fined for other offences in relation to jury service, including:

• Making (or causing to be made) any false representations

• Serving on a jury knowing you are ineligible or disqualified

• Giving false or misleading answers to the judge about your qualification for jury service

• Making (or causing to be made) any false representations about a person summoned as a juror so they don’t have to do jury service

How is a jury selected?

Jurors are contacted by summons of the County Registrar. You must reply to the jury summons. You can do this online by visiting jury.courts.ie or by using the QR code on the summons. You can also reply by post using the form and prepaid envelope provided. If you have a right to be excused from jury service, you must state this when you respond to the summons.

If you want to be excused for another reason (such as illness), you must state that reason when you reply to the summons and enclose any certificates or documents in support of your application. The County Registrar will decide if you can be excused, or not.

Is there a payment for jury service?

You are not paid for jury service and travelling expenses are not allowed. If you are actually serving as a juror, lunch will be provided on the day or days of the trial.

If you are self-employed and work alone and your attendance at jury service means you cannot earn a living, you may qualify to be excused from jury service. You should contact the jury office of the court for more information.

If you are signing on for a Jobseeker's payment you will continue to be paid, but you should advise your local social welfare office that you have been called for jury service.

What happens if I am employed?

If you are in employment, your employer must let you attend jury service. Time spent on jury service should be treated as if the employee were actually employed. In other words, if you are in employment and are attending for jury service, you are entitled to be paid while you are away from work. If you have a contract of employment, for example, (temporary workers or contract workers) you are entitled to be paid by your employer while you are on jury service. There should also be no loss of any other employment rights while you serve on a jury. You can request a certificate from the jury office to confirm your attendance at jury service.

If you feel your employment rights have been infringed or you have lost employment rights while serving on a jury, you can make a complaint to the Workplace Relations Commission using the online complaint form available on workplacerelations.ie. You can contact your local CIC for information.

If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can dropin to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie

Kerry welcome Monaghan to Killarney in Round 1 of group stage

ALL-IRELAND SFC GROUP 4

Kerry v Monaghan

Saturday at 3pm

Fitzgerald Stadium Live on GAAGO

Kerry fans are hoping for something zesty and refreshing when the All-Ireland group stage gets underway in Killarney this weekend. (And I’m not talking about a pornstar martini - although our saloons will be dishing out plenty of those as well, I’m sure).

Yes, a higher ranked opponent would have been more appetising. And, yes, the fact that three out of four teams will progress to the knockout phase deadens some of the flavour.

But after a diluted league and a flat Munster Championship, a drop of stimulation and a dash of excitement would really go down a treat.

All things being equal, Jack O’Connor’s men will be expected to top a pool that also contains Monaghan, Meath and Louth without dropping points. Doing so would send them directly through to the All-Ireland quarter-final, while second and third will contest the preliminary quarter-finals alongside second and third from the other three groups. Saturday’s home match against Monaghan is Kerry’s toughest test on paper. After all, Monaghan were the second longest standing team in Division 1 after Kerry up until this past spring when they finally fell through the trap door. However, their league form can’t have filled the Farney Army with confidence and losing to Cavan in the first round of the Ulster Championship was another heavy blow. They come to Killarney with nothing to

lose, though, and as disappointing as it must have been to the player himself, the news that Rory Beggan was unsuccessful in his bid to earn a contract with the Carolina Panthers is a bonus to Vinny Corey and co.

At their best, players like Stephen O’Hanlon, Jack McCarron and Conor McManus are match-winning forwards and it’s easy to forget that in very real terms Monaghan were one of the top four teams in the country in 2023. They were unfortunate to come up against a great Dublin team in last year’s All-Ireland semi-final.

Having said that, Kerry will be strong favourites, especially with key defender Jason Foley back to full fitness. Monaghan will realistically be targeting winning the league within the league between themselves and their neighbours Meath and Louth. Finishing second in the group would give them a home preliminary quarter-final, which could potentially give them a right good chance of making the last eight.

A modest crowd is expected to attend this Group 4 opener. It’s a long way down from Ulster and some Kerry fans may opt to wait for more appealing fixtures down the line – assuming those fixtures arrive.

Tickets for Kerry v Monaghan can be purchased online for €25. Three-match bundles for the group stage are also available for €50.

The match will not be televised but it will be streamed on the ever-controversial GAAGO.

Kerry well placed to end seven-year wait

LADIES’ MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Kerry v Cork

Saturday 4pm

Mallow | Live on TG4

The Kerry ladies appear to be well placed to end their seven-year wait for a provincial title, but they will be taking nothing for granted when they take on fierce rivals Cork in Mallow.

The Kingdom have made remarkable progress under joint managers Declan Quill and Darragh Long as they have graduated from Division 2 to the ranks of All-Ireland contenders in just a few short years. The Munster Championship has continually eluded them, however, as Cork have maintained a firm grip on the trophy since 2018.

On the evidence of the previous meetings between the sides this season, Kerry might never get a better chance to finally turn the tide. With some players from last season not involved – notably Doireann O’Sullivan, who scored 0-11 in last year’s final - Cork struggled in the league and ultimately got relegated. One of their six

ALL-IRELAND U20 FOOTBALL FINAL

Kerry v Tyrone

Sunday 1pm

Portlaoise | Live on TG4

After finally putting to bed their semi-final hoodoo, Kerry can attack Sunday’s All-Ireland U20 final with confidence - if not reckless abandon.

Tomás Ó Sé’s side were dogged in their narrow victory over Meath last weekend as Paddy Lane’s score was just about enough to get them over the line and book their place in the decider (012 to 0-11). Remarkably, the Kingdom had lost five semi-finals at this grade in the last seven seasons.

The meanness of Kerry’s defence will

defeats came at the hands of Kerry in Tralee (2-14 to 0-7) and they were also second best in the recent Munster group game in Brosna (1-14 to 1-10).

Those results would appear to indicate that Kerry are well placed to get the Cork monkey off their back – and they should be more or less at full strength in Mallow tomorrow – but it would be foolish to rule out the Rebels.

Tickets for the final can be purchased online via Universe for €15 per adult. Students and OAPs are €10, while kids can attend for free.

The game will be shown live on TG4 for those who cannot make the journey. Kerry will advance to the All-Ireland group stage regardless of the result, although the fact that the Munster champions will be seeded first and the runners-up will be seeded second is an added incentive to win.

Of course, it goes without saying that the main motivation for triumphing on Saturday is the honour and glory that comes with victory in a prestigious final. All going well, the women in green and gold will be taking the spoils back over the county bounds some time Saturday evening.

be cause for optimism and they will need to be at their best to repel a Tyrone side who are noted for their attacking prowess. The Red Hand County defeated Roscommon by 3-18 to 3-8 in the other semi in Cavan with Shea O’Hare, Conor O’Neill and Eoin McElholm amongst the goals.

The Ulster champions are on the hunt for their second All-Ireland in three years. Kerry, meanwhile, are seeking their first U20 title (or U21 as it was then) since 2008.

Going by the scoring charts to date, the kicking of free-taker Cormac Dillon will be crucial, as will the output of maverick forward Luke Crowley. The Glenflesk and East Kerry player, who has also lined out for the county’s senior hurlers this year, is capable of providing that piece of magic that could get Kerry over the line.

Killarney’s woman

Eamonn Fitzgerald catches up with top

basketball referee and

former Ireland international Emer Buckley

After earning international caps at U16 and U18 level and winning national titles with her school and with St Paul’s, Emer Buckley is now making huge strides as a basketball referee. The HPG official recently officiated at the 2024 Paudie O’Connor Senior Ladies’ Cup final between Brunell and Fr Mathews at the National Basketball Arena.

I met with Emer and first asked her where her interest in basketball started…

It started in Ardshanavooley. It was a great place to grow up with so many companions to play sport with, not just my own siblings Patricia, Fiona, Noreen, Jeremiah and Gordon, but also the neighbouring children. Mom and Dad were very supportive. Dad (Jeremiah, affectionately known as Skip) played locally for many years and then devoted so much time to coaching and promoting basketball. I loved the atmosphere of the Town Leagues in the Parish Hall and in the local school gyms. I always seemed to have a basketball to play with and learned the basic skills from a very young age.

Tell me about that first international cap at U16.

I will never forget the excitement. There was no email at that time so the letter from the IBA came in the post. Mom didn't open it but gave me that thrill. She headed into Killarney Community College to me where I was surrounded by my sister Patricia and all my schoolmates. I was on cloud nine; I was picked for Ireland. Wow. We were all jumping for joy around the place. High fives and all that euphoria.

It must have been a goosebump moment in your life, to find out that you would be representing your country?

Yes, it was special wearing the Irish singlet for the first time in the 4 Nations tournament in Cardiff and England. Singing the national anthem at the opening ceremony gave me goosebumps. You were always a very focused young lady, reaching for the stars. On the court you played on the edge. Is that a fair analysis?

I always played my heart out to win that game no matter what level, be it school,

club or country. I played from a very young age, and up through all the age groups well into my thirties.

How did you manage that with your three young children, Michaela, Jack, and Emily?

I took them with me very often and while I was playing or training, I called on my siblings, my parents, extended family, neighbours, and friends in St Paul’s. They were just great to mind them, and I couldn’t have played for so long only for them. Even Botty did the minding in the gym on some occasions.

Who was minding whom?

Ah, Botty is a great person, and he is sports-mad.

When your playing days were over, you got involved in refereeing. How and why?

Breeda O’Neill, a neighbour of ours in Ardshan, did so much to promote juvenile basketball with St Paul’s and she asked me one day to help out refereeing in a juvenile blitz. I loved the action and the buzz. It was the next best thing to playing myself. I took it from there and studied the game and its rules in great detail. There’s a grading system for referees and you must pass the exams before you move up the line. It means a lot

of Zoom meetings and written assignments. I qualified at Grade 3 in 2005, Grade 2 Official in 2015, and I am now studying to be accredited as a Grade 1 referee to officiate at games at the top tier, i.e. Super League level.

I was helped tremendously by Emma Perry. She is a FIBA Referee and one of our top referees in the country. Emma is a fantastic mentor to me and has helped me on my journey. Her respect to both her fellow referees and to the basketball community has to be admired. She’s a very knowledgeable educator and can explain rules/regulations with such ease. Since 2019 I have been the Development Officer for North Munster Referees, helping them to educate, develop and progress. Since January 2024 I have been mentoring six female referees through the European Promise Programme. As I mentioned I was a very competitive player and through becoming a referee, I was still able to participate in the sport I love in a different role. I am also able to spread my knowledge back to other referees.

How do you prepare as a referee for a big game?

Let’s say I’m assigned to referee a big game, a Cup Final or a League Final for

Saturday night. On the Tuesday of that week, I receive the game appointment from the National Appointments Officer. This is all done online now. My preparations begin that day when I contact the other crew officials. On Wednesday I watch and analyse (scout) a previous game in which both teams were involved. On Thursday we as a crew discuss keynotes on the game ahead. We would look at the teams individually, pick out the key players, observe what style of game they play, what offence or defence they run, and also if we can prepare for any challenges ahead. Scouting is a tool we use to prepare ourselves both mentally and physically for the court. It’s to help us use strategies dealing with situations which may arise in the game. You can learn a lot about how the players defend or move into the offensive.

This is very helpful when you have to make a call and decide if it’s a foul or not. It could be a technical foul and your decision to call such a foul will have a big bearing on the game's outcome. Usually, I rest on Friday, but during the week I also would go for three runs to keep up a high level of personal fitness.

Now you are on the other side of authority, refereeing at a very high level. How do you manage a player who is so determined in her play that she is pushing the borders of the rules or oversteps them? You played like that… As a referee, my prime consideration is to facilitate players to compete but to also apply the rules of basketball at all times. Yes, sometimes you will meet players who test your patience. I understand their commitment and will to win. But you still will call a foul on them, if justified?

Yes, but I also understand the human element. This may be a player who is in foul trouble in some games, but that is not normal for her. S/he may have personal worries or have got bad news. While I will implement the rules, I would talk to that player gently but firmly and advise them that if it continues, I will have no choice but to send them off.

In last week’s Killarney Advertiser, I wrote an article on the abuse received by referees in all sports including soccer, GAA, rugby and basketball. Two-

thirds of referees leave within two years due to the scale of abuse they receive, be it verbal, physical, psychological, or online. The aggressors or perpetrators of abuse in Irish sport can be players, opponents, opposition supporters, managers, members of a management team, or teammates. Do you also suffer from such abuse as a referee and if so how do you handle it?

For many years it has been part and parcel of refereeing, but this needs to change as it’s getting harder to retain referees in all sports. Of course, I hear it on court from players, coaches and spectators, but I am a firm believer that if you master your craft, implement the rule to the best of your ability, give respect to all, and be an excellent communicator, this will help.

I also feel that some abuse comes from the misunderstanding of rules that change, not realised by some. Games evolve over time.

As a referee, I have no preference for which team wins. I’m there to ensure fair play and apply the rules of basketball and if abuse persists, we have sanctions for all abusers, such as sending off, getting an abusive spectator removed from the arena, or whatever works. When the game is over the organisers ensure that match officials are escorted safely to the referees' room. As of late, online abuse has unfortunately increased. This cannot be tolerated and needs to be reported to whatever platform it’s on.

There have been very high-profile cases of sexual intimidation by coaches/officials with access to vulnerable players.

I have read about these, but I’ve never encountered anything like that in all my time in basketball. I have great admiration for volunteers, players, coaches and referees in our sport.

Killarney has a proud tradition in basketball. Is the sport still vibrant here?

My dad always talked about years past and the great teams competing in the Town Leagues and other competitions around the country. The annual All-Ireland Ladies Blitz every Easter was a mammoth undertaking and so keenly contested, much like the Christmas Blitz in Castleisland, Teams came from all over the country for this prestigious tournament. Killarney players such as Paddy Culligan (before my time) and of course brothers Paudie and Mike O’Connor, as well as schoolboy internationals Shane Horgan and Aidan O’Shea (uncle of Leah McMahon) were all capped for Ireland. On the ladies’ side, local internationals include Lynn Jones, Caitríona O’Connell, Orla Kavanagh, Diane Griffin, Máiréad Finnegan, Marian O’Callaghan, down to the present day as

Leah McMahon is starring for Ireland as well as playing other sports at a high level.

Locally you have great Killarney club rivals in Cougars, who were founded in 1998. Does this rivalry with St Paul’s in derby games lift both clubs? Yes, on all counts. It means that so many more young people are playing basketball with the two clubs and is promoted very positively in all the schools. The Pres Gym is my favourite venue as a player and as a referee. A great buzz is generated, and the schools are very forthcoming in renting out the halls to us. The Aura is also a wonderful venue.

Unlike other local sports, you do not own a venue of your own.

Yes, renting out halls is a huge expense and the small amount of money coming to the Killarney clubs leaves us with a huge deficit which we have to collect through sponsorship, players membership and other fundraising campaigns. However, we are very heartened by joining up with Kerry Stars and Killarney Judo Club for a shared facility at Ballydribeen. The sod was officially turned some months ago.

As regards to St Paul’s, my own club, the future is very bright. We have huge numbers playing and have a top-class underage structure so well coached by volunteers. That is what I say to people. You don’t have to be a basketball player to enjoy the camaraderie in St Paul’s. We are always on the lookout for volunteers as coaches, fundraisers, club officers or so many other roles such as match table officials. The National League teams have had a great year, especially the ladies winning Division 1 and now going into the Super League next season. They have great, committed players and Bubu is a brilliant coach. I was delighted to see him awarded the Coach of the Year.

What about other sports or sporting achievers you admire, Emer?

In terms of playing, I concentrated only on basketball, but I love watching all sports. I just love the excitement generated and watching them on TV is great. All sports bring their own excitement. I admire sporting heroes such as Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Serena Williams and Katie Taylor to mention just a few.

What is your sporting life plan for your future?

I wish to officiate on the HPG at national level, to complete my last year on my Grade 1 programme and continue to educate and support the next phase of officials through their pathways.

And when are you going to retire, Emer? (All I could get from her was a broad smile, which told its own story. Let it be.)

UCD player gets lengthy suspension for using discriminatory language

A rival player has been suspended for using discriminatory language in a match against Kerry FC, the League of Ireland has confirmed.

The FAI’s Independent Disciplinary Committee handed Harry Curtis of UCD a 10-match ban for the offence, which took place during the First Division match between the two sides in Mounthawk Park, Tralee on May 10. Curtis was sent off in injury time. UCD won the game 2-1.

“An Independent Disciplinary Committee of the FAI has sanctioned UCD AFC player Harry Curtis for using discriminatory language towards a Kerry FC player in the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division fixture on 10 May 2024,” a League of Ireland statement read.

“The FAI and League of Ireland maintains a strict zero tolerance approach towards any act of discrimination and are committed to ensuring that League of Ireland matches remain a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

“In accordance with FIFA Regulations and the FAI Disciplinary Regulations, Harry Curits will serve a 10-match suspension. Please note the decision of the Independent Disciplinary Committee may be appealed.”

Kerry FC issued the following statement welcoming the ban: "We condemn discrimination in football and are constantly working to kick it out of the game.

"Mounthawk Park and Kerry FC is a community where everyone is welcome regardless of race, ethnicity, and other diverse backgrounds.

"We would like to thank the Independent Disciplinary Committee in the FAI for their continued efforts and dedication to keeping discrimination out of the game."

Last week Dundalk goalkeeper George Shelvey was also suspended for 10 games for abusing referee Rob Harvey. Kerry FC were also involved in two alleged cases of racial abuse last season.

In September, they claimed a Longford Town player aimed a “racial remark” at one of their players. The matter was referred to An Garda Síochána. Longford Town subsequently issued a controversial statement saying they were “extremely confident” that the alleged remark was not made.

Earlier in the 2023 season, Kerry released a statement condemning racist online comments that had been made about their black players.

Killarney girls represent Munster in interprovincials

Several Killarney RFC players were on duty for Munster in the Interprovincial 7s Tournament at the IRFU High Performance Centre in Dublin.

The Munster U18 girls’ first team (Munster 1) had three wins out of three last Saturday as they beat Ulster 2, Leinster 1 and Connacht 2.

Three local girls were playing for Munster 1: Ava O’Malley, Fia Whelan and Emma Dunican. Ava scored two tries in the first game against Ulster and she also got a crucial try against Leinster. Fia, mean-

while, kicked a number of good conversions.

The Killarney RFC trio will be back at the IRFU High Performance Centre this Saturday for the knockout stages.

The U16 Munster girls’ first team were also unbeaten and Killarney’s Keelin O’Shea played her part. Eliza O’Sullivan lined out for the second team, who won two out of three games.

Diarmuid O’Malley from Killarney RFC was one of the Munster U18 coaches and Brian O’Dowd was one of the U16 coaches. Well done to all the Kerry representatives in the famous red of Munster.

With everything to play for, both teams went on the offensive and everyone was treated to a fantastic second half of football. SENIOR LADIES: Capping off a great week for the LGFA department were the Senior ladies with a win against Castlegregory/ Annascaul on Sunday morning. The West Kerry outfit had won their three games while the home side were out to atone for their first defeat of the season in Round four to ISG. Setting about their task straight away by they took an early lead as both teams adapted to difficult conditions after a damp morning. A couple of well worked goals before half-time saw the hosts lead 2-07 to 0-04 at the short whistle. The second half continued in a similar vein with Legion taking the game to the opposition. Strong running and some well worked team scores together with solid defending and goalkeeping were the order of the day in a solid performance with Legion running out winners. Final Score Killarney Legion 4-15 Castlegregory/Annascaul 0-06.

U15 BOYS: Well done to our U15 team who qualified for Division 1 County Final with a fine win over Keel/Listry in a game played in Listry on Wednesday evening. An excellent first half performance, executing some great scores and defending strongly throughout the pitch helped to build a 2-8 to 1-4 lead at half time. Keel/Listry started the second half strongly and scored two goals in the opening minutes of the second half to reduce the gap to the minimum. But the lad responded very well to regain control of the game kicking some nice points and capping it off with a brilliant goal. It sets up a final date with Firies, and if the two teams recent meeting is anything to go by were in for a cracker. Such is the vagaries of sport Keel/Listry didn't have time wait long to exact revenge, knocking out the lads in the semifinal of the Feile competition in Tralee on Saturday morning. A busy Friday evening in Killorglin helped the U15s qualify for the semi-final but the ball bounced the other way on this occasion. But a hectic week of football and no doubt all eyes now on the big Division 1 final.

EAST KERRY MINOR LEAGUE: Fossa minors had a comprehensive win over Gneeveguilla on Monday evening. Gneeveguilla opened the scoring, but Fossa quickly replied with a brace of points from Dylan O’Meara and Cathal Breen. In the 6th minute Sam Clerkin got his first of two goals, Dara Whelton was very accurate with his kickouts and with Mark Kennelly winning the midfield battle, it ensured a plentiful supply of ball to the forwards who converted every opportunity. Dylan O’Meara and Mark Kennelly added further goals to leave Fossa leading at the break, 4-11 to 1-03. Fossa continued to control the second half with Derek O’Gorman giving a fine performance of assured defending from wing back and David Butler attacking at pace. Gneeveguilla never gave up and did score two goals in this half, but Mikey Moroney added a further goal to leave Fossa comfortable winners in the end. Team; Dara Whelton, Luke McCann, David Butler (0-01), Jack Spillane (0-01), Conor O’Mahony (0-01), Jack Hallissey (001), Derek O’Gorman, Mark Kennelly (1-0), Ryan Brady, Cathal Breen (0-05), Dylan O’Meara (1-04) Shay McCormick (0-01), Harry O’Connor (0-02), Mikey Moroney (104), Sam Clerkin (2-01), Morgan O’Brien. MINOR GIRLS: Rd 4 County League. A trip to Na Gaeil for our minor girls team, we travelled with 15 players, (5 minors) for this 13 aside format competition and on a large pitch there was lots of running around for all. A slow start and some unlucky shooting saw us behind to a physically stronger

SPORT NOTES 17.05.2024 60

team and we went in down 1-08 to 0-4 points. A few positional switches and fresh legs helped launch a second half revival and Fossa defended well and improved their attacking play. A real never give up performance saw Fossa take the lead late on and the girls dug deep to close out an excellent result 3-09 v 2-10. Well done to all.

Glenflesk GAA

CONDOLENCES: Our sympathy is offered to the family of Neil Doherty, Foiladown. In the early days of Glenflesk GAA when the club had no field, his father Peter gave the club the use of his field. We also express our sympathy to the family of Jimmy Gleeson, Curraglass. May they Rest in Peace.

RESULT: Credit Union Senior County League Division 5B - Glenflesk 2:14 Dr Crokes 2:14. A gripping contest, as Dr Crokes and Glenflesk couldn’t be separated and both went away with a point apiece, on a perfect evening for football in Dr Croke’s GAA Grounds. The hosts dominated early, scoring 2 goals in the first 5 minutes. Glenflesk were reliant on the superb free taking of Danny Lucey for their initial score’s, firing over 2 brilliant long-range efforts in quick succession. Michael Mullane also got a fine individual score. Glenflesk got a much-needed goal midway through the half. Darragh Fleming blasting an unstoppable shot to the net. After their initial shocking start, they headed for the dressing rooms still very much in the game. Callum Cronin’s superb run through the middle of the Crokes defence saw his shot barely clear the crossbar. David Connor then added another fine point after breaking free from defence. Glenflesk were then awarded a penalty, with Lucey being the man upended. He took the responsibility himself, firing low and hard the net. The game had taken a point nature now, and the scores were level as the game entered injury time. Jamie Moynihan put Glenflesk ahead again with a well worked team score, but Crokes equalized with their last attack, and a hectic hour of football had produced no winner. Once again Glenflesk had shown their ability to recover from a slow start, as happened against Laune Ranger’s. This was another very good performance, with lots of player’s looking in good form. The competitive nature of fighting for places for the rest of the year can only be good for the Club. Thanks to Michael Healy for the Match Report.
