A busy Killarney is Tralee’s gain

There is an interesting situation after developing in Killarney and Tralee ahead of Saturday’s All Ireland football championship clash between Kerry and Mayo.

Over 30,000 people are expected at Fitzgerald Stadium for the game.

Mayo fans are always known to travel to support their team and it seems this weekend is no different.

This will be one of the biggest GAA weekends ever seen in Killarney.

Its on par, if not bigger, than the traditional July Munster final clashes between Kerry and Cork and its sure to be a memo-

rable occasion no matter the result. However, there is one big difference. Cork fans tended to travel up on the day of match and leave shortly afterwards.

Kerry fans are guilty of the same when the same tie is played in Cork.

But the expected influx of Mayo fans has caused a different sort of problem.

There is very little accommodation available in Killarney and its seems Mayo fans are set to take over Tralee for the weekend.

Accommodation websites like booking. com reveal limited rooms in both towns. To be fair to accommodation providers, the prices of these available rooms are not too expensive.

There is nothing like a big match occasion in Killarney but does it risk being diluted when a lot fans will stay 30kms away.

There are many reasons this happened, Killarney is on the verge of peak tourism season and already we are seeing coach loads of international tourists make regular appearances in the town.

There is a proportion of accommodation given over the International Protection Seekers in both towns.

The new-look GAA format and calen-

dar means travelling fans habits have changed too.

But Tralee never had a decent tourism season in May – its season usually comes to life once school is out for the summer. This is not the first time this year something like this happened. Several competitors in the recent Rally of the Lakes stated in both Tralee and Ballyvourney.

It is great that the two main towns in the county are getting a kick-back from the biggest sporting occasions in Killarney this summer but should local tourism operators be asking how did an opportunity like this slip through their fingers?

Debate over location of GAA museum

Where should a Kerry GAA museum be located?

Even if the long-mooted project ever gets off the ground, there is debate if it could or should be located in Tralee or Killarney.

At Monday’s Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael Cahill raised the issue again.

“I believe Killarney is the best location. In my opinion, there is no place better for a GAA museum than Fitzgerald Stadium as it's within walking distance of the town,” he told the meeting.

However, Cllr Mikey Sheehy, the may-

or of Tralee was having none of it and pointed to the existing Kerry County museum on Denny St that is already home to GAA exhibits.

“I'm speaking here with my Tralee hat on. We feel we're the ideal location for this. I really think we need to promote the project as a county,” said Sheehy.

Cahill’s proposal included the idea that a GAA museum should be included in the proposed upgrade of Fitzgerald Stadium – a project that has been mooted for some time but, as of yet, without any firm plans.

New Euro cycle route does not include Killarney

Killarney has not been included in the EuroVelo 1 Cycling Route that was announced on Thursday this week.

The Irish segment of the EuroVelo 1 route is 2,350 km long and passes through eleven counties - Wexford, Waterford, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal as well as crossing into Northern Ireland for a further 250km.

Overall EuroVelo 1, also known as the Atlantic Coast Route, is 11,150km long and runs through Norway, UK, Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal.

It is, essentially, the Wild Atlantic Way for cyclists.

Section 16 (of 40 Irish sections) of the Irish route starts in Waterville and ends in Annascaul. Cyclists will be asked to turn left or right (depending on the direction of travel) in Killorglin, thus bypassing Killarney.

This EuroVelo 1 Cycling Route showcases the very best of our coastline and represents a valuable tourism product in attracting both overseas visitors as well as in encouraging domestic visitors to explore our Atlantic Coast.”

The Department of Transport has invested approximately €800,000 in the EuroVelo 1 Cycle Route. The route has been inspected to ensure high quality directional signage.

Tidy Towns volunteers to carry Yvonne Quill’s legacy

Killarney Tidy Towns Committee have vowed to continue the legacy of their late chairperson Yvonne Quill.

The popular Barleymount woman passed away in March this year,. She was the driving force behind the volunteer efforts of the Killarney Tidy Towns Committee. The volunteers will meet for the first time on Monday night and start their usual littler picking and painting campaign in and around Killarney.

Randles Hotel wins Renewable Project Of The Year 2023

Killarney’s Randles Hotel has been named as the recipient of the All-Ireland Business FoundationSolar Evolution Business All Star Renewable Project Of The Year 2023 at the recent All-Ireland Business Summit in Croke Park.

The acknowledgement was sponsored by Kilkenny based Solar Evolution who sought to highlight the most outstanding Renewables project over the last year.

Situated close to the town centre, the four-star Randles Hotel Killarney was originally built in 1906 as a rectory before being converted into the luxury manor house style hotel that offered guests the high level of luxury and personal service that proudly remains at the core of its operations today. Adventure tourism conference in Killarney

Ireland's Association for Adventure Tourism held its annual networking convention in Killarney this week.

The event took place in the Killarney Convention Centre on Thursday afternoon, and was focused on challenges and potential solutions in tourism and

hospitality, as well as travel trends. The Association for Adventure Tourism is made up of 230 businesses that focus on activity holidays like rafting, horse-riding, coasteering kayaking and biking.

Speakers included Pat O'Leary of the Kerry Tourism Industry Confederation.

Following the huge success of the inaugural Killarney Club 7s last year, Spa GAA has announced that its 7-A-Side Gaelic Football Tournament will be returning in 2023.

The tournament will feature men and women teams from the four corners of the country competing against each other over the June Bank Holiday Weekend. Matches will be played across two top class pitches, which can be easily viewed from all areas of the grounds.

Fully stocked bars and some top class entertainment will be on offer in the Heineken Tent whilst also providing the perfect vantage point to take in all the drama the football is sure to throw up.

group of both the men’s and women’s competition will run simultaneously, with one commencing on Pitch 1 and the other on Pitch 2. These games will be played throughout the morning and play will end at 1:30pm. The second group of both the men’s and women’s competition will commence at 2pm and again, will run simultaneously on Pitch 1 and Pitch 2. Play will end at 6pm on Saturday evening with all group games being completed.

The Heineken Tent will open at 12pm with music and fun running until 10pm. Delicious food will be available throughout the day in our Food Court. Killarney Town is only a stone’s throw away when the nights festivities conclude and our shuttle buses will provide transport for anyone interested.

Sunday, June 4

Kicking off at a later time of 10am, the competition will move to the knockout

stages. Every team will have something to play for on finals day as the winners of Group 1 and Group 2 in both the men’s and women’s competition will qualify for the Cup Semi-Finals while teams who finish second and third respectively in their groups, will play off to get into the Cup Semi-Finals.

All is not lost for the remaining teams as they will play off in the Shield Semi-Finals with cash prizes available for both the Cup and the Shield winners. Play will end at 7pm with the Men’s Cup Final being the final game.

The Heineken Tent will once again open at 12pm and music will run until 10pm. The final day of festivities promises to be a fun-filled, exciting day of football and entertainment.

Over €1 million in funding for Killarney Community Organisations

Several Killarney-based community groups and sports clubs will benefit from funding announced by Minister for Education and Kerry T.D Norma Foley under the Community Recognition Fund.

In total €50 million is being made available to communities across Ireland to refurbish sports clubs, upgrade playgrounds, parks and walkways as well as enhance school or parish facilities that are open to the wider community after hours or on weekends.

In total Kerry County Council will receive over €4 million to enhance services and facilities that will be used by all members

of the community.

Thousands of euros has been confirmed for the Killarney area with the Kerry Stars the biggest winners.

They will get €992,022 to be put towards a social and leisure activity hall for sport and fitness of Special Needs athletes.

The Killarney Immigrant Support Centre (KASI) will receive €250,000 for office and room refurbishments while the Ballyspillane Community and Family Resource Centre will be able to transform storage space into a new consultation therapy and meeting room thanks to a €22,000 grant.

Listry GAA will get €20,000 to upgrade their existing walking track and make the track more accessible to all community members.

The Christmas in Killarney Festival will have a new Christmas street lighting display for all to enjoy thanks to €40,000 in funding.

“I am delighted to confirm the news that Kerry will receive over €4 million in funding through the Community Recognition Fund. This fund was created by Government to reward communities and organisations for the outstanding contribution they have made in welcoming and integrating Ukrainians into com-

munities,” said Minister Foley. This major initiative, the first of its kind, is designed to specifically support communities across the country that have welcomed and are hosting families and citizens from Ukraine and other countries.

Liam Waldron, Rachel Griffin and Luke O’Sullivan, Sixth Year students from Killarney Community College, were named SciFest STEM Champions in December 2022 in Dublin, for their Group Theoretic Approach to Pythagoras’ Theorem.

This amazing trio are currently in Dallas Texas representing Ireland at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (Regeneron ISEF).

Their project takes possibly one of the most well-known theorems that everyone remembers from school, Pythagoras’ Theorem and provides an alternate proof of it, while also highlighting how right-angled triangles naturally provide a link between two coordinate systems and how this special case can naturally recreate the Pythagorean Theorem.

Given these three were heading to Dallas, before they headed off, I decided to meet at Rob's Ranch House, Plunket Street, where we were treated to spicy wings, ribs and a gluten free burger for Liam with thanks to hostess Nikki Taddei.

"We're thrilled" Rachel replied. "Our school supports and enhances every talent so we couldn't have done it without Ms Dineen, Mr Lynch, Ms Spillane and Kerry ETB. "The contents of the project are not in the curriculum. It is abstract algebra which is a different kind of geometry. It's a huge amount of work on top of the Leaving Cert but it's worth it" Liam said.

"Going to Texas with the people that I began this project with is a chance of a lifetime. Of course, it's lots of extra stress and effort but it's also a lifetime achievement that I am so excited to explore" Rachel said.

“Sixteen hours of travel from Kerry to Dublin to Dallas Texas with our teachers Ms Spillane (Chemistry) and Ms Hughes (Music). The competition will run for the entire week, but Wednesday (May 17) is the day of judgement. Globally there are 120 countries taking place and we are one of three Irish teams representing Kerry and indeed Munster. Mathematics is the smallest category within the competition which makes it the most exclusive so we are really hoping we are in with a good chance" Luke explained.

What kind of prize have you fixed your eyes on in Dallas?

"Before talking brass tacks, committing to this project could well have the opportunity to apply for a Naughton Scholarship (a scheme of scholarships to pro-

mote the study of engineering, science and technology at third level by students in Ireland). And state side you just never know who might be there scouting" Rachel replied.

"The money can vary from €5,000 within a category to an overall prize of €75,000! I can't imagine what opportunities that would open state side not to mind what I would do with the money," Luke replied.

Given the success of the project, I'm assuming a mathematics or science based future is looming for you three?

"I am hoping to study Theatre and Performing Arts in Cork or to be a teacher. That's the dream!" Rachel replied.

"I am going to study physiotherapy next year" Luke said.

"Yes, I would love to study something in the lines of Mathematics, Physics and

Science so as you can imagine, I am really enjoying this journey with Scifest". Have any of you ever been to Dallas before?

"Never! We will have six days in Dallas so we will be in attendance daily for a few hours but after that we will get to enjoy the OMNI Hotel and we hope to get to visit John F Kennedy Memorial on Commerce street, on land donated by Dallas County. It is an open tomb structure that symbolises the freedom of President Kennedy's spirit" Liam replied.

I said goodbye to all three and thanked Nikki for allowing us her and Rob's time before wishing the trio all the best. Not their first 'rodeo' but truly hope it's their best.

More calls to safeguard the future of St Finan’s

Kerry Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill is the latest politician to make calls for the safeguarding of St Finan's Hospital.

He is calling for the government to make immediate plans to take the St Finan’s Hospital building in charge and make arrangements for the protection and refurbishment of it as a National Monument.

“This task is of national importance and

Kerry County Council do not have the funding for such a venture. The Office of Public Works needs to be brought on board, with sufficient Government funding to stabilise the building and prevent further deterioration initially, with a view

to converting it for public use,” he said Councillor Cahill.

“As reported by Kerry County Council’s Acting Director of Planning, Paul Neary, St Finan’s is irreplaceable in terms of architectural heritage, as well as being of national importance historically and socially. It is interwoven with society in Kerry now for nearly 175 years, and its ar-

tistic value must be protected for future generations.”

“There are a variety of uses that it could be put to and these should be explored now. I would personally favour an educational theme, whether on a medical or tourism agenda. But right now, it must be dealt with speedily and sensitively, before it deteriorates beyond repair.”

Concerns that the Ring of Kerry road might close for road works

Residents and businesses along the Ring of Kerry road need to be informed of any potential road closures in ample time.

Planned future road works, particularly at Gleesk Viaduct could result in prolonged periods of road closures. With no alternative, South Kerry residents could be forced to travel the long way around the Ring of Kerry and coaches tours could be made avoid the area totally.

“I have been told that there are no closures presently planned by Transport Infrastructure Ireland for the Ring of Kerry road. The works at the Gleensk Viaduct planned for late 2023, are at design stage and therefore the Traffic Management Requirements have not been agreed on as yet, but Kerry County Council assure me that they will ensure the minimum of disruption to N70 route” said Fianna Fáil Councillor, Mi-

chael Cahill.

“I know locals and business owners are concerned about the impact of these disruptions and I will continue to keep the public posted on this very important issue” added the Rossbeigh based Councillor.

The Fianna Fáil man also raised the matter at this month's meeting of Kerry County Council where he said that there was growing concern amongst the business community in Caherciveen, Portmagee, Valentia, Ballinskelligs, Waterville, Kells, Glenbeigh, Killorglin and throughout Iveragh.

Councillor Cahill said if there are plans to close the Ring of Kerry road then the business community needs to be informed at the earliest possible date so as to allow them time to make plans. He also said that if this closure of the Ring of Kerry road goes ahead, that a compensation package should be put in place for businesses.

Three Killarney riders contesting Rás Tailteann

Ireland’s biggest cycle race – the Rás Tailteann – got underway on Wednesday and there are three local riders contesting the five day event.

Stage one took the peloton on a 155km run from Navan to Birr.

The following day the remaining 155 riders departed the County Offaly town to Ennis in County Clare which included five categorised climbs including the category 2two ascent of Maghera Mast.

As the Killarney Advertiser closed for press on Thursday evening, the three local riders were listed as stage finishers.

Richie Maes is riding for the AllHuman Velorevolution team and his prime role this week is to help Daire Feeley defend

his title. Feeley retains his ninth place overall – 20 seconds off race leader Conor McGoldrick after state two/ Ewan Buckley is racing as a guest with Midlands Racing team but as it his first attempt his main goal is to get to the finish.

Killarney man Benny Cassidy is racing with Blarney Cycling Club and he scored maximum King of the Mountains points on the second run over Twin Pillar on Thursday afternoon.

Friday’s stage will take the riders from Ennis to Castlebar. The Mayo town will host the start of Saturday’s stage to Monaghan and the race concludes with a run from there to the finish in Blackrock, County Louth on Sunday.

This task is of national importance and Kerry County Council do not have the funding for such a venture.

Great Southern Host Charity BBQ

Great Southern Killarney are hosting a fundraising charity BBQ in support of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team.

Taking place on June 11th from 4-6pm, the event will be hosted in the picturesque gardens of Great Southern Killarney and promises a wonderful evening of food, live music and more. Made up entirely of volunteers, Kerry Mountain Rescue Team was formed in 1966 following the deaths of two climbers on the mountains of Southwest Ireland, and since then has come to the assistance of hundreds of climbers. Increased call outs over the past few years due to a huge interest in all mountain’s sports has put pressure on volunteers and equipment. Fund raising is vital for this voluntary group.

Speaking on the event, Michael Jacobi, the Managing Director of the Hayfield Family Collection, ‘We are delighted to be able to support the amazing volunteers that make up the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team. We are very grateful for their work, they are true local heroes. We look forward to hosting the upcoming event at Great Southern Killarney for what promises to be a great evening!’

Killarney to host Cruinniú na nÓg Kerry events

Killarney has been selected as a host venue for Cruinniú na nÓg events next month.

Cruinniú na nÓg is a national day of free creative activities and events for under 18’s. This year it is taking place on June 10.

Killarney will host art, dance, drumming, heritage and wildlife workshops, and teenage film screenings on the day.

“Earlier in the year, the Creative Ireland Kerry Office carried out an online consultation with the young people of Kerry to see what they liked making, doing and

going to, and the results of this have informed the 2023 programme,” said an event organiser.

“Events are taking place from 9am to 9pm so participants can make the most of the day and there are events in every major town in the county, with 34 in total, so there is something for all ages and tastes.”

Deadline looms for Liebherr Scholarship Programme

Killian O’Sullivan, a current Liebherr scholarship recipient and mechanical engineering student, shares his thoughts on the programme.

"Receiving the Liebherr scholarship on entry to college was a massive help to me. I am just finishing my 4th year of mechanical engineering and the knowledge and assistance from Liebherr over the past four years has been of great benefit," he siad.

"The experience in design-work every summer has kept me learning constantly and has given me a more in-depth knowledge of engineering practices which in turn has helped me with my college studies. The ability to do my professional placement in Liebherr was also a great advantage as it takes the stress off trying to source placement and going through interview processes which allowed me to focus on college at crucial times when other people didn’t have the same luxury. I would recommend anyone interested in engineering to apply for the Liebherr scholarship as it really is a great opportunity”.

Cíara Dennehy recently graduated college with a BE in Manufacturing and Mechatronic Engineering at MTU became a recipient of the Liebherr Scholarship Programme in 2019, during the second year of her degree. She is currently working full time in Liebherr’s electrical design department on the network development team as a graduate automation engineer

and spoke about her scholarship experience.

“It is clear how well the programme has prepared me for working in the industry. As an automation engineer in network development, there is a large scope of topics to delve into; there are always new challenges to tackle and new learning opportunities," she siad.

"Currently, I’m heavily involved in the testing and development of the Liebherr Remote Operator Station. There has been a lot of development in this space in recent years and it continues to grow rapidly. There is also significant crosso-

Killarney Lions Club’s annual golf fundraising event, played om May 12 at O’Mahony’s Point golf course, was a fantastic success with 30 teams playing on the day.

This was the 40th running of the charity event and to-date it has raised in the region of €400,000 for local charities. This year the key beneficiaries are Kerry Mountain Rescue and Kerry Cancer Support Group.

MayFest got the season off to a flying start at Killarney Racecourse

MayFest at Killarney Racecourse took place on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, kicking off the season at the popular track in great style.

Sunday was an all jump racecard with the feature race being the Tote Killarney National, won in impressive fashion by Pont Aval. Sean O'Keefe rode a patient race, making steady headway before racing away after the last fence. This was the final leg of Willie Mullins' treble on the card.

The opening day of the festival was also Family Day which saw record-breaking crowds, where The Art House got all the kids involved in the activities on offer and Racecourse Ambassador Bryan Cooper was on hand to meet all the upcoming junior jockeys in attendance. Shecouldbeanything won the Easy Clean Tourist Attraction Mares Hurdle (Listed). On her previous start, she won at the Punchestown Festival, while before that she was sixth in the Jack De Bromhead Mares' Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham. Shecouldbeanything is a quality mare and looks to have a bright future ahead of her. The valuable Oyster Tavern Handicap Hurdle went the way of Mighty Tom, who is trained by Kerry native Cian Collins. The Galway Hurdle is the next big target for the horse.

Monday was an evening meeting, all jump racing again with the feature race being the An Riocht Steeplechase won

by Saint Sam, who is likely to receive an entry in the Galway Plate and there is plenty more improvement to come from this six year-old. Willie Mullins went one better on Monday and enjoyed a fantastic four-timer. Absurde, a €260,000 purchase from France, made a successful start over hurdles and looks to be an exciting prospect.

Tuesday closed MayFest in fine style with an all-flat card and beautiful sunshine. Trainer Joseph O’Brien won the opening three races on the card, completing the feat in the Fesco Maiden aith Arniemac at 4/1. The feature race The Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Race was won in dramatic style with Ma Belle Artiste winning by just a head in the end to beat the 2/1 favourite in the race Impact Warrior.

Chairman of Killarney Races, Billy O’Sullivan said: “What a start to the season here at Killarney Races, a great few days were enjoyed by all. There was a real sense of community, lots of families enjoying the facilities and top-class racing, it was superb. Now it’s onwards and upwards for our July Festival."

Podium finishes for KCC at Gravity Enduro

The return of the Vitus Gravity Enduro Race Series for 2023 picked up where the 2022 season left off with top performances from Killarney Cycling Club riders.

The first round of the event was run in Ballinastoe, County Dublin. A wellknown area for Enduro and Down Hill Mountain Biking activity, there were a number of new trails unveiled for the racing weekend, posing a challenge to all.

Adam Murphy, now in his second year as a U21 racer put in a strong performance to finish on the podium in third place.

The U21 category is quickly becoming one of the most competitive in the Enduro scene, and it's great to see Adam

at the fore of the talent.

Patrick Cremin also continued his great form from the 2022 race series to put in some rapid stage times on the day and took home the Bronze Medal in the Senior category.

Jason Murphy used his recent momentum from overseas competition in the biggest category of the day to take a very fine second place in the Masters. Up and coming talent, Paddy Moore continued to learn his race craft at the highest level of competition and finished the five stages towards the top half of the U17 field.

Pictorial history of St. Brendan’s College unveiled

On Wednesday, last week St. Brendan’s College played host to a wonderful occasion when current teacher, Michael Leahy and past teachers, Billy Condon and Denis O’Donoghue presented an archive of visual and written material, photographs, articles and jerseys to

Ms. Lorna Larkin, Chairperson of our Board of Management.

Over a ten-year period Mike and Billy gathered, collated and catalogued a photographic collection of school images stretching back to the 19th century. These images – in their hundreds – are a

compendium of life in the College since its foundation.

Denis O’Donoghue began to research the past presidents of the school in the late 1990s.

This initial research led to a detailed document on the social history of the school from the 1850’s through to the 1970s.

They are a rich and valuable storehouse of the school’s traditions and storied past and a treasure throve for the curious past pupil, the historian or indeed our future students and teachers. The school hopes to place the archive on permanent display in the near future.

Patron Saint of computer coders dedicated at the Friary

A new shrine dedicated to Blessed Carlo Acutis has been installed in the Friary church.

Carlo was born in London. His Italian parents moved back to Italy, to Milan when he was a child.

Carlo, an amateur website designer, is best known for documenting Eucharistic miracles around the word and cataloguing them onto a website which he created before his death from leukaemia in

October 2006.

“Blessed Carlo was beatified in Assisi in October 2020 on behalf of Pope Francis. He is the patron of youth and Computer Programmers. We pray that he will soon be canonised. Perhaps you might encourage young people to come pray and venerate his image,” Brother Lynch told the Killarney Advertiser.

“He had a great love for St Francis of Assisi and his tomb is in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Assisi.”

Family Carers Ireland launch Kerry Heart of Gold fundraiser

Family Carers Ireland, the national charity supporting the 500,000+ family carers across Ireland, is proud to announce the launch of their national fundraising initiative, Heart of Gold, in Kerry.

Supported by Horizon, Heart of Gold is a special fundraising initiative dedicated to raising vital funds, awareness, and appreciation for family carers who selflessly provide care and support to their loved ones such as children or adults with additional needs, physical or intellectual disabilities, frail older people, those with palliative care needs or those living with chronic illnesses, mental health challenges or addiction.

The purpose of the day is not only to raise funds for Family Carers Ireland's critical programs and services, but to also raise awareness about the challenges faced by family carers. The proceeds collected will enable the organisation to provide crucial resources such as information, support, and advocacy for family carers, as well as drive policy changes that improve the quality of life for both carers and their loved ones.

The funds raised will be utilised to sustain the provision of essential and complimentary services that family carers rely on to care for their loved ones safely. These services include the National Freephone Careline, counselling, and respite, which are invaluable lifelines for family carers. In addition, Family Carers Ireland facilitate support groups, social events, training, and carers' forums to help family carers feel less isolated in their caring responsibilities.

Heart of Gold Day initiative is a chance for the people of Kerry to show their support

for family carers by simply donating and wearing a special Heart of Gold pin. The pins will be available for purchase from volunteers on Thursday 15t and Friday 16 June.

Speaking about the launch Marie Fitzgerald, Local Support Manager, Family Carers Ireland said: "We are delighted to launch our Heart of Gold fundraising campaign in Kerry. The work of family carers is often unseen and undervalued, but it is essential. We hope that the people of Kerry will show their support for family carers by getting involved in this initiative.”

“This vital campaign aims to secure funds that will enable family carers to access crucial supports and services. The funds raised from the Heart of Gold campaign will enable us to sustain support for family carers in Kerry. Our focus is on providing group meetings, as well as connecting with family carers over the phone and through home visits, to ensure they re-

Street furniture licence fees update

The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD announced that he was seeking the approval of the Oireachtas to amend Planning and Development Regulations to continue the waiving of licence fees for outdoor dining meaning restau-

rants, cafés, hotels and pubs across Ireland will save hundreds of euro this year, in 2023.

The waiving of the street furniture licence fee for tables and chairs outside a hotel, restaurant, public house or other establishment where food is sold for consumption on the premises, was first introduced

in 2021 with the fee of €125 per table reduced to €0 per table. This extension into 2023 will assist the hospitality sector this year by reducing the cost for maintaining outdoor dining in public spaces. Similar to previous years there will also be no fee for awnings, canopies and heaters used in conjunction with the tables and chairs.

Sherpa climbs Everest for 27th time

A Sherpa reached the top of Mount Everest for a record 27th time on Wednesday morning.

Kami Rita Sherpa, 53, scaled the 8,849 metre mountain – the world’s highestalong the southeast ridge route, guiding a Viet Nam climber.

“Kami Rita climbed Sagarmatha [the mountain’s Nepali name] for the 27th time," said a Nepal Department of Tourism official.

Rita scaled Everest for the first time in 1994 and has climbed it almost every year since then, except in 2014, 2015 and 2020, when climbing was halted for various reasons.

Nepal is home to eight of the world’s 10 highest peaks, including Everest, and welcomes hundreds of adventurers each spring, when temperatures are warm and winds are typically calm.

On the same day British mountain guide Kenton Cool reached the world’s highest peak for the 17th time, extending his own record for the most climbs by a non-Nepalese.

May is said to be the best time to climb Everest due to favourable weather conditions.

Minister O’Brien said:

“This year Government are further supporting businesses across the country with another waiver of the street furniture licence fee. The outdoor dining experience has been incredibly popular with the public. For a small café or restaurant this fee can represent another financial burden and hospitality businesses still need our help, so I am delighted to extend the provisions of these regulations for another year.”

Cahersiveen’s public realm plan unveiled

Kerry County Council has published plans for significant public realm enhancement works in Cahersiveen which will be presented at an open public consultation day on May 25.

The plans relate to the establishment of a new ‘Daniel O’Connell Quarter’ in the town with an enhanced public realm within the town centre, the Fair Green and along the waterfront.

The proposals include a new boardwalk and waterfront site which will incorporate the new South Kerry Greenway as well as new cycle lanes, a new Library Square, enhancements at the Fair Green and reconfigured parking areas.

The planning and design of the project is supported by €2m in funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund.

A period of non-statutory consultation has now commenced with members of the public invited to view the plans at Council offices and online as well as dur-

ing an open day on Thursday, 25 May at Cahersiveen Library. Council staff will be available to discuss the plans with members of the public and interested parties.

Cathaoirleach of the Kenmare Municipal District, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen welcomed the publication of the plans and encouraged members of the public to engage proactively with the public consultation.

‘This is a really exciting moment for Cahersiveen which will greatly benefit from the enhancement of the public realm in the town centre area and new developments along the waterfront and the Fair Green area. I look forward to hearing the views of local residents and other interested parties and to the early completion of this project,’ said Cllr Connor-Scarteen. The Irish passport has been ranked as the fourth-most powerful passport in the world for 2023, falling one place from last year, Irish Central, the online newspaper for the Irish in New York, reports.

Nomad Capitalist, a consultancy firm based in Hong Kong, has released the Nomad Passport Index for 2023, which highlights the best passports in the world for visa-free travel.

Sean Kelly, MEP for Ireland South, has voiced his concerns over the European Commission's proposal to ban the use of microplastics in sports fields, cosmetics, and cleaning products.

While acknowledging the negative environmental impact of microplastics, Kelly emphasizes the need for a “balanced approach that considers the socio-economic consequences and the interests of sports in communities”.

The European Commission's proposal specifically targets the use of microplastics derived from old tyre as infill on artificial sports surfaces, including those used for football, hockey, GAA, and rugby training facilities.

The increased usage of old tyres in artificial turf can be attributed, in part, to the ban on landfilling scrap tires in the EU. However, a ban on their use in sports pitches would pose challenges for the EU recycling industry, as the leftover rubber would not be easily absorbed.

“This would likely result in more tires being exported beyond the EU for incineration, leading to increased emissions and further environmental damage”, said Kelly.

Kelly acknowledged that microplastics pollution caused by artificial sports pitches is significantly less than that generated by the manufacturing and use of new tires on the road. He highlights that the proposed ban “would impact up to 2,500 artificial pitches in

Ireland alone and tens of thousands of surfaces across the EU, affecting sports clubs, schools, communities, colleges, and universities.”

In Irish football, for instance, there are approximately 600 all-weather fullsized pitches attached to soccer clubs, along with thousands of smaller facilities in communities, schools, and colleges. How to change your name

You may change the name you commonly use by simply adopting a new name. However, you will probably experience some difficulty proving the change to both public and private bodies without a document referring to the change.

A deed poll is a signed declaration that binds you to a particular course of action from the date of signing. It is most often used to declare an intention to change your name. A deed poll for a change of name contains declarations (in other words, ‘a sworn statement’ or affidavit) that you:

-Are abandoning the use of your old name

-Will use your new name at all times

-Require everyone to use your new name

What do you need to do if you want to change your name after marriage? There is no legal obligation on anyone in Ireland to change their name when they get married. You may change your name after marriage for tradition or cultural reasons. You may, for example, want to show you have joined a new family and therefore take the new name - but this is just a social or cultural choice with no legal basis. If you change your name when you marry, you do not need to execute a deed poll. Most organisations will accept your marriage certificate as evidence of your name change.

What do you need to do if you want to change your name after separation or divorce?

You may want to revert back to your maiden name after separation or divorce. It is likely there will be several organisations you need to contact to update your personal details, for example, your bank, your employer, the Motor Tax Office, your healthcare provider. Every organisation will have different requirements so check what is needed to complete the process. You usually will have to provide a valid form of identification and certified evidence of your previous name. You may need to provide a certified copy of your separation agreement or divorce decree.

Is there a need to change your name by deed poll?

The advantage of changing your name by deed poll is that you then have documentary evidence that you have changed your name. This, along with your birth certificate, is acceptable for most administrative procedures and provides an easy and inexpensive solution to most of the difficulties that can arise when you change your name.

If you changed your name when you

married, you do not need to execute a deed poll as you have your marriage certificate as evidence of your name change.

How do you carry out a deed poll?

Carrying out (or ‘executing’) a deed poll is a relatively simple process. You can get a solicitor to do it or you can do it yourself.

First, you declare that you have given up a former name and adopted a new name for all purposes. You then sign the deed poll in the presence of a witness. The witness must also swear an affidavit (called an affidavit of attesting witness) in the presence of a solicitor or commissioner for oaths.

British citizens are not required to obtain a change of name licence to change your name by deed poll. However, you may be required to provide a letter from the Department of Justice stating that you do not require a change of name licence.

How do I ensure there is recognition of my new name?

Your name change does not necessarily need to be supported by any documentary evidence although evidence is often needed for a wide range of administrative and legal matters.

Government bodies and services (for example, Revenue or the Passport Service) may need proof of your new name. Each body may have their own requirements for verifying the change. Some ask for a copy of the deed poll, others ask for an enrolled copy, and some may need ‘proof of usage’ of your new name with documents dating back at least 2 years. You should contact any relevant organisations or bodies to check what their requirements are.

What is the cost of changing your name by deed poll?

There is a small fee to have the affidavit of attesting witness sworn before a commissioner for oaths or a practising solicitor. There is no fixed rate of charges for legal fees, so you should ask in advance for information on such charges. If you enrol the deed poll in the Central Office of the High Court, you will have to pay stamp duty of €60.

Michael Healy-Rae to make rally debut

Local politician Michael Healy-Rae is to make his motorsport debut this weekend.

His debut started out as a joke earlier this year but now that joke is set to become a reality.

In January, deputy Healy-Rae attended the official launch of the Killarney Forestry Rally in Castleisland.

Healy-Rae is a close friend and neighbour of current Killarney and District Motor

Club chairman Thomas Randles. He revealed at that launch that Mr Randles has spent years trying to convince him to take up rally co-driving. However it seems that Randles has finally convinced his friend and neighbour.

On Sunday, the Greenmount Motorsport Bonanza and Family Fun Day comes to the Limerick Racecourse in Patrickswell and Healy-Rae will co-drive for Randles in his famous Ford Escort Mk2 in the rallysprint element of the event.

Vintage club unveils restoration projects for 2023

Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club launched the 2023 restoration raffle on Friday last.

The launch took place at the Warehouse Cafe in Farranfore - one of the main sponsors this year.

There was a huge crowd on the night who enjoyed refreshments, music and entertainment.

Fred McDonogh from Red Chair Recruitment unveiled the 1979 Land Rover to the public – the main restoration project. Two motorcycles – a Honda 70 and a Honda X8R will also be restored and that project is supported by Brian Glover of BG Motors.

Lee Strand Dairies have also come on board for a second year.

"We are very excited about this year's raffle as the club is celebrating 10 years, As with previous years, I'm sure the public will support this charity fundraiser,” said Tom Leslie, Club Chairman.

There was also a huge display of Vintage cars on display.

This year’s restoration raffle will support St. Francis Special School, Paul Murphy Charity, Killarney Rugby Club and Kerry Stars.

FarmElder Research Group visits Kerry Social Farming Healy-Rae selected for EU political programme

Farmers, social farming participants, service providers, social farming projects from across Ireland, support services and local representatives were among the large attendance, who heard from a range of speakers about how social farming in Kerry is operating and its potential to expand to assist older people and those living with dementia.

The event, organised by South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP) through Kerry Social Farming was part of a visit by FarmElder research group, who are studying the role of social farming for older people at a European level.

Claire McAuliffe (Teagasc Advisor) and members of KSF Working Group, outlined how dairy farms can be ideal venues for social farming. They provide a variety of activities, which change depending on the season. For the benefit of guests, Claire outlined how the dairy farming system works on the Murphy farm and how factors such weather and markets can impact farming life. She noted how farmers and their families provide a welcoming environment for social farming and are conscious of safety as part of their farming operations.

Dr Brendan O’Keeffe (O’Keeffe Research) told the gathering that he is currently completing an Evaluation of KSF and how the growth of the project, which now has 40 active farms and over 60 participants, has been guided by the framework

from a previous Evaluation which he and colleagues did in 2017. The potential for social farming for older people is one of a number of new avenues which KSF can follow. He noted the strength of the partnership approach and the advantages of the long-term relationship which develops between host farmer, their family and the participant who comes to their farm.

Anni and Josef Hindelang, who run a social farm in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, shared their story through a video about their farm. Since 2020, they have hosted older people with dementia, their family members and carers on the farm twice a month.

The gathering also heard from Danny Healy-Rae TD and Mayor of Kenmare Municipal District, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen.

The attendance brought together the groups operating social farming across Ireland, with Rachel Budd (IRD Duhallow social farming), Debbie Kelleher (Field of Dreams, Cork) and Eadaoin O’Connell (Social Farming Ireland Development Officer, West Limerick Resources) among the attendance.

Kerry County Councillor Jackie Healy-Rae has been selected amongst 150 candidates from across the European Union to participate in the Young Elected Politician Programme (YEP).

The programme which is overseen by the European Committee of the Regions has also for the first time opened the doors for young local and regional representatives from EU candidate countries.

“I’m delighted to get selected for this programme as it gives me as a young politician a chance to participate with young, elected representatives from across Europe to engage with the Union's diverse views from European regions and cities in key events,” he said. "Youth participation is an integral part

of the DNA of politics, and I feel strongly that the views of Ireland need to be expressed to others especially into the future especially with the fast pace of changes that will affect the everyday living of people.”

The YEPs is a network of representatives who are no older than 40 and hold a mandate at regional or local level in the EU.

To date, more than 500 young politicians have joined it since its creation in 2019.

For the first time since its creation, the YEP programme will also be open to EU candidate countries, allowing Young Elected Politicians from Ukraine, Moldova, Albania, the Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Türkiye to engage in the Union's functioning.

Easter contributes to national spend increase

April was a positive month for the hospitality sector, as spending increased in hotels, restaurants, pubs and off licences, likely due to the Easter holidays.

Average daily spend increased by 7% in Hotels; 6% in Pubs and Off Licences; and 4% in Restaurants.

Pat McCarthy and Noreen were childhood friends and we are so thankful for the precious memories you shared about Mom at the funeral home. Fr. Pat O’Donnell, thank you for your guidance and for the beautiful, comforting words which summed our mother’s life so perfectly at the funeral mass.

We are very grateful to Seán O’Mahony, Funeral Director who went above and beyond to help us with arranging our mother’s funeral and for your calming presence throughout. Thanks also to the grave digger who prepared Noreen’s final resting place.

Many thanks to our kind neighbours and friends who brought food and refreshments to our home and for assisting with traffic management at Shrone for the burial, it was very much appreciated.

Thank you to all those who attended the month’s mind mass, to Fr. Jim Kennelly for celebrating the mass and again to Paud O’Donoghue who’s singing enriched the mass.

Kerry’s 28-year unbeaten home record is on the line this weekend as league champions Mayo roll into Killarney for the opening game of the new All-Ireland group stage.

The Kingdom haven’t been beaten in a championship match at the Fitzgerald Stadium since 1995 but they could face one of their toughest battles in years on Saturday afternoon.

Mayo looked rejuvenated in the National League under new manager Kevin McStay and they demolished Jack O’Connor’s team in Castlebar in February. The final score of 2-14 to 1-10 flat-

tered the reigning All-Ireland champions, who struggled to cope with Mayo’s fitness levels and slick ball movement. The good news for Kerry fans is that the squad is looking far healthier now and the recent mauling of Clare in the Munster final suggests that their team might be moving in the right direction. Along with long-term absentees Stefan Okunbor and Darragh Roche, Kil-

lian Spillane, Donal O’Sullivan and Jack O’Shea are currently nursing injuries. Other than that, O’Connor should have all of his All-Ireland-winning team available to him.

Here in Killarney, excitement has been building all week. Tickets were still available as this publication went to print but a large crowd is expected to flock to what is already being billed as one of the games of the season.

Top spot must be the goal for Kerry

As the All-Ireland round robin series gets underway this weekend, Adam Moynihan assesses the new format and Kerry’s potential path to Croke Park

The much anticipated (and much maligned) All-Ireland group stage is finally upon us. For months, the new championship structure has been the subject of fierce debate. For some, it goes too far. For others, it doesn’t go far enough. The coming weeks will reveal whether or not the thing actually functions in the harsh light of day.

It should be exciting for the novelty factor alone but there’s no escaping the fact that the revolutionary new format is flawed. Sixteen teams have reached the round robin series: seven by virtue of their league ranking, eight who reached their provincial final, plus 2022 Tailteann Cup winners Westmeath. Four groups of four. So far, so good.

The glaring problem is that when the group stage reaches its conclusion –four weeks and 24 games from now – 12 teams will still be standing. Only the fourth-place teams in each pool will be eliminated, with second and third advancing to the preliminary quarter-finals and the four group winners moving directly to the quarter-finals proper. It’s a lot of pushing and shoving just to get rid of four candidates.

For teams who consider themselves to be All-Ireland contenders, there appears, on the surface at least, to be very little peril in the group stage –unless things go completely haywire and they somehow finish last.

However, if you look a little deeper, there is something meaningful at stake in the group stage: an easier path to the serious business of the All-Ireland series.

Let’s take Kerry as an example. If the reigning champs successfully nav-

igate Group 1 and finish first ahead of their rivals – namely Mayo, Cork and Louth – they will move on to the All-Ireland quarter-final. A second-place finish would leave them facing into a preliminary quarter-final at home to a third-place team from another group. A third-place finish would leave them facing into a preliminary quarter-final away to a second-place team from another group.

Missing out on first might not seem like an especially daunting outcome –after all, they would more than likely avoid the big guns in the preliminary round - but a quick look at Group 2 uncovers a potential banana skin. Group 2 contains Galway, Armagh, Tyrone and Westmeath, so finishing second in Group 1 could leave Kerry with a home match against one of those teams. Finishing third could set up an away match with one of those teams, which would be very difficult on paper.

The other groups don’t look to be quite as strong but either way it makes sense for the likes of Kerry and Mayo to go all out for first place and avoid the extra round altogether.

It is also worth noting that the preliminary quarter-finals will be staged the week between the final round of the group stage and the quarter-finals; this will be a free week for the group winners.

All things considered, the group phase isn’t quite as meaningless as some detractors might have you believe. You can be sure that Jack O’Connor and his players will be taking the next three games very seriously indeed.

Both ends at Fitzgerald Stadium should be named after Kerry legends

Upgrades are needed at the Fitzgerald Stadium. A cursory glance around the famous old ground makes that abundantly clear. The good news is that ‘The Park’ is apparently set for a €72 million revamp at some point in the future. Realistically, though, we could be talking years before work begins.

In the meantime, there’s one quick and easy way to improve the stadium, and it won’t cost millions to do it.

We should name both ends of the ground after legends of Kerry GAA.

STAND AND TERRACE

At present we have a stand and a terrace, both named after prominent figures from the neighbouring Dr Crokes club.

The O’Sullivan Stand was erected in the 1970s in honour of Dr Eamonn O’Sullivan, a revolutionary trainer who guided Kerry to eight All-Irelands across five decades.

On the other side of the ground, we have the O’Connor Terrace. It was named after Michael O’Connor, a highly-regarded administrator who was appointed as chairman of the Munster Council in

1986.

In his book ‘My Beautiful Obsession’, the great Weeshie Fogarty suggests that O’Connor would have become Kerry’s first GAA president were it not for his untimely death in 1991.

The O’Connor Terrace wraps around both ends of the pitch (partially at one end and fully at the other) but, in reality, these ends are never really referred to as the O’Connor Terrace.

Everyone present on a matchday – fans, players, officials, and the media – needs another way of referring to those ends so various informal names have emerged.

If you find yourself somewhere in the middle of the terrace on Saturday when Kerry play Mayo, look to your left. This end is often referred to as the ‘Town End’. But Killarney Town, as the crow flies, is directly over the O’Sullivan Stand. You can get to town by exiting the end to the left, of course, but you can get to town by exiting the other end too. This end to the left is also sometimes referred to as the ‘Dressing Room End’, which is logical as the dressing rooms are located beneath this part of the terrace. It is also known as the ‘Lewis Road End’, which makes sense as Lewis Road runs parallel to that particular side of the

stadium.

From your vantage point on the terrace, the end to your right is most commonly known as the ‘Dalton’s Avenue End’. This is where things get confusing. Fitzgerald Stadium is surrounded on two sides by a housing estate that is subdivided into different sections. You have Dalton’s Avenue, Marian Terrace, St Brendan’s Place and Torc Terrace neighbouring The Park, with O’Kelly’s Villas and Bishop Moynihan’s Crescent a little further away. Most of Dalton’s Avenue, to the best of my knowledge, runs parallel to the back of the O’Sullivan Stand – it’s not at the end to the right at all. The row of small houses that you can see around the back of the stadium at this end are part of Torc Terrace. So, really, it should be the ‘Torc Terrace End’ – although I’ve never heard it referred to as such.

Of course, it is alternatively, and more precisely, called the ‘Scoreboard End’. With all that in mind, in the interest of tidying things up for everyone, surely it would be beneficial to bestow the ends with official titles?

If we were to go down the road of naming them after individuals, just as Kerry GAA did with the O’Sullivan Stand and the O’Connor Terrace, we certainly have

no shortage of potential candidates. It is definitely a nice touch to name things after individuals who are no longer with us but, personally, I think it’s even nicer when people get their recognition when they’re still with us.

What about renaming the ‘Lewis Road/ Dressing Room/Town End’ the ‘O’Dwyer End’, in honour of the great Micko who won 12 All-Irelands with Kerry as a player and manager?

And with three Crokes men already remembered at the stadium (O’Sullivan, O’Connor and Dick Fitzgerald), perhaps it would be appropriate to honour a Legion man too?

The ‘Culloty End’ has a nice ring to it, and it would be a fitting tribute to local man Johnny who represented Kerry with distinction in hurling and football. He won five All-Irelands with the senior footballers before going on to train the team and serve as a selector for many years. (Unfortunately, this end of the stadium isn’t much to look at right now, but it would surely be a priority if and when any redevelopment does take place.) You could make a case for many other Kerry legends, of course. But to my mind, few - if any - are more deserving than Mick O’Dwyer and Johnny Culloty.

Kerry to make a statement as real business begins

Finally, it’s time for some proper competition between teams who have realistic ambitions of winning the Sam Maguire.

For others, the Tailteann Cup will be very acceptable on their journeys upstream to join the elite counties in Gaelic football.

The four provincial finals disappointed even if the Ulster final ended in a welter of excitement. The Derry goalkeeper Odhran Lynch covered himself in glory in the dreaded penalty shootout. Although the game was close and well contested throughout, it was like watching paint dry. I found it hard to watch the boring back- pedalling, recycling and negative fare.

In Leinster, not even Mickey Harte’s prayers could work a miracle as the Dubs crushed Louth in another provincial stroll. They scored five goals. It could have been ten. They mean business, especially with some of the golden heroes of the past in from the start.

I believe that Kerry, Dublin, Galway and Derry are the top four in contention for the Sam Maguire. Tyrone, Armagh and Mayo will also have realistic hopes.

Stop right there; tóg sos. How good are Mayo and Kerry? We will have a much better indication of how well they wintered after tomorrow’s plum tie in the Fitzgerald Stadium. Throw in is at 3pm. Not alone is all available reasonably-priced accommodation in the greater Killarney area booked out by those Mayo fans, but Tralee and elsewhere are also reporting increased bookings. God knows Mayo supporters are unbelievably loyal. Despite all the disappointments they come back for more. McStay has named a panel of 36 for the trip to Killarney, no doubt buoyed by that big home win over Kerry in the league. Kerry were terrible in that game and Mayo scored at will.

I expect good value for the €25 admission to this game with two teams who are at their most appealing with direct, open and attacking football. Mayo will put it up to Kerry.

As I write this, I expect the same starting 15 that played against Clare to be announced on Thursday at 8pm. I also

expect the Kerry defence, led by Shane Ryan, to curb the Mayo attack; the midfield to hold their own with additional help from Paudie Clifford; Seánie O’Shea to shake a leg more often and kick over at least six points from frees; and the other forwards to deliver the winning scoreline.

Yes, Kerry to win. Losing is not an option, even if away to Cork (possibly Páirc Uí Rinn) and a neutral venue game versus Louth (possibly Portlaoise) provides a kind of back door on the road to Croker.

I hope Kerry come through without injuries, especially to David Clifford. Where would we be without him? Where would the GAA be without him? Someone said they do not like the microwaved treatment of the hurling games

coming so fast with just two-week gaps, ditto for football. Players will have little time to recuperate.

TICKET INFORMATION

Tickets were still available as we went to print. Terrace tickets are the same price as stand tickets: Adult €25 and Juvenile €5. With the terrace tickets there are three zones to facilitate crowd control –Green, Blue and Red. Red is on dressing room side behind the town goal. Blue is from Lewis Road side across the Terrace as far as the press box. Green is from there to the end of the western terrace. Tickets are unreserved but zone-specific including stand.

I expect the 8,500 stand tickets will have been sold out by Friday. Unless you have mobility or other health issues, you can go to the sunny Michael O’Connor Terrace, named after a marvellous GAA servant, nach maireann anois, and don’t bother Patrick Tatler or Der Bros for tickets. They have very other demanding duties and it’s not their gig. The authority for this game is the GAA in Croke Park. Tickets for the terraces are sold online. The county board won’t be handling them. Terrace tickets can also be purchased from participating Centra and SuperValu stores, along with Mr Google.

Kerry to historic win

Ryan Kelliher, the brilliant young striker from Lissivigeen, heralded the breakthrough that Kerry FC needed when he struck for two goals in their away game against Athlone Town on Friday last.

This win earned the fledgling Kerry side their first win since they entered the LOI First Division at the start of this year. Kelliher seems to have a penchant for goals and he is striking up a great understanding with Leo Gaxha in particular. When Kerry FC and Athlone Town last met Kerry were unlucky to lose that one, conceding a goal in the 86th minute. Seeing them in action at Mounthawk Park against Longford Town, I was impressed

by their second-half fightback after poor concession of earlier goals. They still lost narrowly, but showed what they are capable of.

They got it right in Athlone. Ryan Kelliher controlled the play with his first touch and bang - goal number one. They could have been hauled back but Aaron O’Sullivan the 19-year-old Kerry FC keeper was magnificent on his debut.

Nathan Gleason put Kerry 2-0 clear and now they were in command, but they got a sharp reminder before half-time when Athlone pulled one back. The hosts kept up the momentum in the second half and eventually it was all square at 2-2.

Now for the decider. The run of play was

with the home side. Gaxha did the initial work and from close in Ryan Kelliher scored, although Athlone and, indeed, the referee thought the ball had been cleared off the line. Fortunately for Kerry FC, the linesman on the far side was well positioned to make the correct call. It made for a tense finish with 4 minutes added on, but Kerry held firm to claim a 3-2 win. The road home to Kerry was joyful.

Now they can expect a full house at Mounthawk Park tonight at 7.45 pm to lift the side to what one hopes will be a first win at home. Bray Wanderers will test their mettle.

Full-time score: Kerry FC 3 Athlone Town 2. It makes for nice reading and what’s more it was an away game.

Team boss Billy Dennehy - a seasoned campaigner from his own playing days with so many teams - said it would not be easy to make the breakthrough, but one didn’t expect that Kerry FC would have to wait until their 14th game to win and gain

that elusive three points. The next challenge is to do that in front of the home fans, who have longed for a positive result at Mounthawk Park. They need to do that and keep the attendances buoyant.

They now go into a busy schedule running right into the June Bank Holiday. They will face Bray Wanderers (May 19), Wexford (May 26), Finn Harps (June 2), Waterford (June 5) and Athlone Town (June 9). All games have a 7.45 pm kickoff.

These five games in a short timespan are crucial to their hopes of adding more points.

It was a very disappointing end of season for the Kerry hurlers who lost their last two games to Offaly and to Laois, thus killing off any hopes of getting their hands on the Joe McDonagh Cup.

This trophy has eluded them in recent times despite three final appearances. One hoped that this year they would come good but they were well beaten away to Offaly, which left them needing a victory over Laois in Tralee on Sunday last. Carlow would have to lose to Offaly if Kerry were to advance. All told, that scenario failed to materialise.

Offaly had already qualified for the final so they fielded a weakened team for the Carlow match. Carlow were running up a big score and that news was filtering through to Tralee just as Laois were inflicting a big defeat on Kerry. Will this be the end of Stephen Molumphy’s reign in charge of Kerry? Defeats are usually blamed on managers, but I believe he has done a fine job. It is no piece of cake to manage a GAA team in Kerry, especially the hurlers who are always in the shadow of the footballers.

Molumphy was a fine player during his nine seasons with Waterford, usually playing at midfield. I would say that the job is still his if he wishes to continue and I don’t see too many others wanting to sip the contents of this chalice.

We may have seen the last of Mikey Boyle in the Kerry geansaí, though. He has been an outstanding hurler and indeed that extended Boyle family have been great competitors in several sports. It continues now with Evan captaining the Kerry minor football team. They were due to play their Munster semi-final last evening. I expect they won, but they have disappointed so far. Team manager Wayne Quillinan, taking

over from James Costello, is in the post for the first time after stepping down from managing Austin Stacks. His selectors are Eamonn Whelan (St Senan's), Michéal O'Shea (Castlegregory) and Declan O'Sullivan (Dromid Pearses), while Alan O'Sullivan and Arthur Fitzgerald serve as strength and conditioning coaches. They have run their collective eyes over a huge number of eligible minors.

For the Cork game, which they lost, there was poor representation from local East Kerry clubs – although that is not to suggest that the selection is skewed in favour of other district boards. Only Pat Moynihan (Rathmore), Keelan O’Shea (Kilcummin) and Jamie Moynihan (Glenflesk) started and in the subs

list were Cian O’Connor (Rathmore) and Rory O’Connell (Currow).

Let’s hope they have made it to the Munster final. Judgement will be suspended until then. God knows Kerry need a fillip after that disappointing loss to Sligo in the U20 All-Ireland semi-final. Interestingly, both left their respective roles in Kildare and Offaly with unexpected and undue haste. Who wouldn’t want to manage the Manchester United of Gaelic football, was Jack’s explanation. We must have another evaluation of that after June 3 when the Manchester derby goes ahead in the FA Cup final.

KERRY LADIES

No meltdown on this occasion for the Kerry ladies who eased into the Munster final with a 2-8 to 1-5 victory over Tipperary.

After coughing up a 10-point lead to end level with Cork the week before, Kerry responded well and easily defeated Tipp in Bansha. First-half goals by Danielle O’Leary and Emma Costello set them on their way.

They will now face Cork in the final in Mallow on May 28.

Munster prevail in URC semi-final

A 16–15 scoreline is manna from heaven when you are on the winning side and especially for Munster who hadn’t beaten Leinster over the previous 13 games.

Leinster have massive resources in terms of money and personnel to put together what is almost a team of internationals that will meet La Rochelle in the Champions Cup final.

Leo Cullen rested just a few seniors last weekend but still expected to defeat a Munster team that has been in their shadows for too long. I know so many staunch Munster supporters who suffered so many defeats to the Leinster flyers, but it all came good for the Reds when Jack

Crowley’s late drop goal clinched that sweet victory at the Aviva last weekend. It has been a long time coming and hunger is good sauce.

Nothing like such a late winning score. I readily recall Ronan O’Gara, Ollie Campbell, Tony Ward, and Barry McGann lifting the Munster spirits with similar kicks.

Munster’s stunning victory over Leinster at the Aviva Stadium means they will travel to Cape Town South Africa to play the Stormers in the URC final on May 27. Will La Rochelee head coach O’Gara snatch the Champions Cup from Leinster this weekend? The native Corkonian will have to be patient before the Irish manager’s job is offered to him. The World Cup will give some indication.

M.E.K. Our U15 side secured the premier title this morning with a good win over nearest rivals MEK. Leading 1-0 at half time through a JJ O'Donoghue goal we started the second half brightly and went 2 up with a neat finish from Alex Doolan. We took the foot off the pedal after this and MEK to their credit came more into the game and got 1 back. We finished the game strongly and possibly could have had another couple. Overall, a super achievement by this bunch of young lads who have managed to win the league while remaining undefeated 9 wins and 1 draw. Well done boys & management.

U12 PREMIER: Castleisland 2-1 Killarney Athletic (Eric Corcoran). Our young Blues wrapped up their season with a defeat to Castleisland. Although the result did go our way, the boys played really well and were unlucky to not to get anything from the game. Lots of learnings for next Season when they move to 11 aside. AGM: This year’s club AGM takes place in Faha National School on Tuesday May 30 at 8pm. SENIOR MEN: Castleisland Desmonds were the visitors to Direen for the latest round of the Credit Union County League. A stiff breeze backed the Island men in the first half, but they never really cashed in on the advantage of the elements as Ryan O'Grady with four points, the impressive Rob Leen and Finbarr Murphy had the home side 0-6 to 0-4 ahead at the short whistle. A Jonathan Lyne goal, following good work from Ryan O'Grady again, was the perfect start to the second half and when Jamie O Sullivan and Finbarr Murphy chipped in with further scores it was looking ominous. But the visitors rallied briefly with three unanswered scores, and it took points from Eoghan O Sullivan and Will Shine to steady the ship. The game was put beyond all doubt by a Ryan O'Grady goal, a fact cemented by an emphatic fin-

ish from Will Shine, who put the gloss on a 3-14 to 0-7 win. Milltown is the destination next Sunday May 21st with the game pencilled in for a 2pm throw in time. The Senior B team picked up their second win in the Division 6 with a narrow win over Churchill on Friday evening.

SENIOR LADIES: The Senior Ladies made the long trip north to Clounmacon earlier this morning for their Donal Curtin Round four clash. Short a number of players due to unavailability it didn't take the North Kerry side long to take control of the game from the and they ran out worthy winners on a comfortable scoreline.

FIXTURES: In Round 6 of the Credit Union SFL we suffered defeat to Milltown/ Castlemaine. The scoreline ended Spa 1-13 to Milltown/Castlemaine 2-17. We currently have 5points in the Senior Division 1 League with 5 games remaining. Next up we will play away against Kilcummin this coming Sunday May 21st at 3:30pm.

EK MINOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Dr. Crokes 3-9 Legion 2-14. Another local derby that went to the wire as the visitors finished strongly with a 2-point win. An outstanding team performance has us in a 2-point lead at half time with goals from Ben Kelleher and a great solo run from Adam Byrne. We led 2:05 to 1:06 at half time. The second half was yet again end to end with Ben Kelleher scoring an outstanding individual goal. Legion got the upper hand in the final moments and scored a goal which deflected in, this gave them the boost they needed, and they finished strongly with a 2-point win. Some great saves by Kacper Roebak, with Cian Mulcahy and Gearoid Sugrue excellent in defence, Adam Byrne in midfield

and some great finishing and passing by Noah Sexton and Ben Kelleher. Next up is Kilcummin at home on Monday night.

SHL DIV 1: Dr. Crokes 0-21 Abbeydorney 1-15. Another fantastic win for our senior hurlers sees us sitting comfortably in the middle of the table. Next up is Lixnaw away on Friday evening.

SFL DIV 4: Dr. Crokes 1-17 Ballyduff 2-08. Our second team got their first win of the season when they welcomed Ballyduff to Lewis Road on Sunday. Ballyduff started the better with a goal within the first few minutes of play. After a rocky start we led 1-08 to 2-03 at half time.

SFL DIV 6: Dr. Crokes 1-12 Castleisland Desmonds 0-11.

Fossa GAA

SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 3: Fossa 1-10 Knocknagosel 0-13. This match ended all square after a great fight back by Knocknagosel - scoring late points to draw the game. Fossa will feel this is a game they could have won but were happy with a share of the spoils in the end. Fossa found it hard to break down a Knocknagosel mass defence but some superb long-range points by Tadgh O’Shea kept Fossa in touch throughout the game. Half time Fossa 0-6 to Knock 0-5. A goal just after HT by Emmett O’Shea saw Fossa back in control - but a red card for Fossa in the last 10 minutes saw Knock seize the initiative and get back into the game. Rian Collleran was the pick of the Fossa team and was well supported by the Doyle brothers and Paddy Sheehan. There was a minute silence before the game in honour of the late Ellen Clifford.

SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 6: Fossa B 3-13 KOR B 1-14. A great win for Fossa Bs in a highly entertaining game played in Tralee on Saturday evening. Best for Fossa were Sam Buckley, Darren Cronin, Pauric Talbot, Rocco Sheehan, Joe Cahilane and Mark Dennehy. Dean Sheahan gave another fantastic display in goals. Scorers: Darren Cronin 2-6, Peader Kelliher 1-1, Rocco Sheehan 0-3, Kev McCarthy 0-2, Ryan Sheehan 0-1.

Kilcummin GAA

CREDIT UNION CO LEAGUE: Gneeveguilla v Kilcummin. Kilcummin began well in this game aided by the wind in the first half and led 1-3 to no score after 10 minutes, with Shane Mc Sweeney finding the net. After 25 minutes gone Kilcummin led 1-7 to 3 points and were unlucky not to add another goal, the crossbar saving the home team. This seemed to ignite Gneeveguilla and within the next 5 minutes they had three goals scored and taken the lead. The half time score was Gneeveguilla 3-4, to Kilcummin 1-8. Kilcummin introduced Noel Duggan and James Williams. This saw Eoin O’ Donovan moves to wing back which seemed to bring Kilcummin back into the game. They dominated the next 15 to 20 minutes scoring 1 – 5 without reply. A cracking goal from Donal Maher and a Paul O’ Shea dispatched penalty on the 55th minute to leave the scores 3-10 to 3-13. Gneeveguilla kept attacking and forced Brendan Kealy to make a spectacular save with 3 minutes or so remaining. Kilcummin were not prepared to try and hold the 3-point lead with 4 minutes injury time to be played. A great move from defence all the way to the full forward line resulted in a Noel Duggan goal. The final score was Gneeveguilla 3-10 to Kilcummin 4-13. There were many very good performances on the Kilcummin side but Eoin O Donovan’s contribution in the second half from wing back was immense.

NAL: Fossa 1-12 Beaufort 3-16. After a minute’s silence in Fossa for the Late Ellen Clifford, Beaufort went to work

and were two goals up by the 10-minute mark thanks to Fionn Kennedy and Jack Gabbett. The home side clawed their way back; hitting 1-06 in a 10-minute period with Beaufort’s sole reply a Fionn Kennedy point, and a Calum Galvin strike saved by the Fossa keeper. With tactical changes applied at half-time and instructions to relax and return to a passing game, Beaufort stuck to the task and gradually built scores. Three Kevin Coffey points early in the second-half restored the lead and further points from Conor Hughes and Fionn Kennedy, the latter following excellent build up play from Luke O’Malley, put daylight between the sides. Final score: Fossa 1.12 Beaufort 3.16. A shield final awaits on Wednesday, May 17.

PB: Oisin Lynch ran a massive new 800m PB in Belfast Irish Milers Track meet in a time of 1min52.40secs smashing the qualification standard for the European Youth Olympics. Sarah Leahy also ran well to come 2nd place in her 100m. Also last week, we had athletes competing for their schools in the South and North Munster schools. In the Senior, Tadgh Galvin came 1st in the 400m, Bartek Zglinski came 1st in the High Jump and Oisin Lynch came 1st in the 800m. In the Intermediate, Jason O’Reilly came 1st in the 400m, Cian O’Brien came 1st in the 200m, Anna O’Shea came 2nd in the Pole Vault and 3rd in the Discus. Tunde Smith came 3rd in the Minor 100m.

KERRY: Day 2 of Kerry County Juveniles/ Juniors T&F Championships was held on Sunday 14th May in Castleisland, and we had some great performances from athletes. Some great fun was had with the relays, and we would like to thank all the parents and coaches for their help and commitment on the day.

CHARITY: Killarney RFC has been announced as Killarney Valley Vintage club charity for this year’s fundraiser. The club is raffling a fully restored 1979 Land Rover along with a list of other amazing prices and we have been selected as a ben-

CLUB AWARDS: Last Sunday we held our Club awards day at Aghadoe with player awards for Youths and Senior as well as a wonderful barbeque and tuc shop open on the day. Muckross Rowing Club

LEE REGATTA: It was a busy day for the club last Saturday with 37 Muckross crews racing at the Lee Regatta, held at the Cork city marina. The club finished first in eight races, including the Mens Masters Double, Women’s Junior 14 Quad, Mens Junior 15 Quad, Mens Junior 15 Single straight finals (Leon Bowler and Ronan Fahy), Mens Junior 15 Double straight finals (Muckross A, Muckross D) and Mens Junior 14 Octuple. The club was also second in a further eight finals and third in two races. Congratulations to the winners and well done to all our crews. The regatta was also a first competitive outing for many of our Year 1 rowers, who raced in octuple and quad events. A special well done to everyone on competing in your first regatta.

REGATTA SEASON: The busy regatta season continues this weekend with 49 Muckross crews entered in the Castleconnell Regatta taking place at O’Briensbridge. Best of luck to all our crews. A number of our older junior crews will travel to Blessington on Saturday, May 27th for the Dublin Metro Regatta, the third of four Grand League regattas. Other upcoming events include Drinagh Lake Regatta, Sunday, May 28th and Carlow Regatta, Sat-Sun, June 3rd and 4th.

Fossa Rowing Club

TRAINING: Anyone interested in training for Killarney Regatta, taking place on the 25th of June, please call to the Old Church in Fossa on Mondays at 7:30pm.

KERRY: Killarney Swimming Club represented Kerry for their respective areas as they competed at the Community Games National Finals in Castlebar on Saturday 13th May fantastic results! Eugene Mulligan (Killorglin) 5th U14 Backstroke. Evan O’Donoghue (Spa Muckross) 6th U12 Breaststroke. Emily Brosnan (Kilcummin) 6th U14 Freestyle. Shane Tomlinson (Spa Muckross) 7th U14 Freestyle. Katie O’Riordan (Milltown/Listry) 9th U16 Freestyle. Aoife Daly (Beaufort) U16 Breaststroke.

GALA: Killarney Swimming Club attended the John Dempsey Memorial Gala at the UL Sport Arena on Sunday 14th May with excellent results and many new personal bests: Raegan Browne 2nd 100m Fly. Ayla Keogh 2nd 50M Free. Noah Keogh 2nd 100M Back. Orlaith Mackey 2nd 100M Back and 50M Back. Lara O’Brien Leahy 2nd 50M Breaststroke; 2nd 50M Fly; 1st 50M free. Samuel O’Neill 2nd 50M Free. Dara Sheehan 3rd 100M Breast; 3rd 50M Free.

Kilcummin

KILCUMMIN COMMUNITY GAMES: Kilcummin Community Games athletics evening will take place on Tuesday 23rd May at 7pm in Killarney Valley AC. Registration will take place at 6.30pm and first race at 7pm.Entry fee is €2.00. Please note you must reside in Kilcummin parish to participate. Medals for top 3 positions per event. 1st and 2nd place from each event will go through to the County Finals, please note County Final will be held on 24th & 25th of June in Castleisland. County Final entry fee is €5.00.

KNOCK PILGRIMAGE: A pilgrimage to Knock is on Saturday 17th June leaving Kilcummin village at 7am, stopping in Gort, Co. Galway on the way up and down for food/refreshments. For bookings and more information please contact Kilcummin P.O.

BOG WALKS: Kilcummin Rural Development would like to sincerely thank Kerry Co. Council for providing the funding to carry out maintenance and drainage to the Bog Walk recently. We also would like to thank the Department of Social Protection who provide the maintenance personnel under the local Community Employment Scheme. This work will greatly enhance the walks and make it safer for everyone. Details of these walks which are rich in a variety of flora & fauna, are in the “Kilcummin Walks” brochures (free of charge) which are available at the Rural Development Office and the Post Office. Why not pick one up and it may inspire you to discover this beautiful amenity which is enjoyed by many already. Please be mindful of keeping this a clean, safe and friendly place to enjoy by bringing your rubbish home, keeping your dog(s) on a lead when you come in contact with fellow walkers or wildlife and respecting the local landowners’ property.
