Green Lawn residents voice Time for innovative opposition to proposed car park parking solutions

Residents in the Green Lawn area of Killarney have expressed anger and concern over Kerry County Council’s plans to develop a 139-space car park in their neighbourhood.

The proposal, which is currently undergoing public consultation as part of the planning process, has sparked widespread opposition among locals in the area .

Many residents fear that the chosen location will increase existing traffic congestion, as the proposed entrance to the car park is on the already heavily trafficked Mission Road.

Furthermore, those living in Green Lawn are worried about the potential negative impact of increased noise and footfall on their residential area, which is home to many elderly individuals who have lived there for generations.

Dominic Rintoul, whose elderly mother lives close to the proposed site said: “We do not feel this is an appropriate place

for a car park. There is already grid-lock coming and going from Mission Road, and this will only add to it.”

Residents of Green Lawn held a public meeting Wednesday night, to discuss the issue further. Several elected councillors were invited to attend, with residents hoping for their support in opposing the development.

However it seems that there is 50/50 support for and against building the car park within the ranks of the elected councillors and it remains to be seen what the final outcome will be.

Calls for E-Scooter safety campaign Independent Councillor Martin Grady raised a motion at Wednesday's Killarney Municipal District meeting, urging Kerry County Council's Road Safety Officer to work with other groups to create a campaign raising awareness about the safe use of e-scooters.

While acknowledging that some people

use e-scooters responsibly, helping to reduce traffic and pollution Grady expressed his growing concern about the misuse of these vehicles in the town.

In response to the motion, a council official confirmed that the Road Safety Officer will engage with key people, relevant organisations, and community groups to develop a road safety aware-

ness campaign focusing on how to use e-scooters safely and responsibly.

The Roads Traffic Act recognised e-scooters as a new vehicle type in May 2024.

However, it was noted that the rules established a year ago are often not being followed.

Killarney’s struggle with parking is a tale as old as time, it seems. The current debate over a proposed car park in the Green Lawn area perfectly captures the town’s ongoing challenge: the undeniable need for more parking spaces versus the understandable resistance from residents to developments that disrupt their neighbourhoods.

While it’s clear that Killarney, the “event capital” of the country, requires adequate parking to support its tourism and local economy, the approach to finding solutions needs a serious rethink.

Killarney is not short on land, and it’s time to explore alternative, less disruptive options. The idea of using some of the grounds of St. Finan’s Hospital is a prime example. It’s government-owned, relatively close to the town centre (a short ten-minute walk), and could potentially alleviate parking pressure without directly impacting a residential area. Why is this not a serious contender?

Where is the much-promised multi-story car park? There is one mooted for the lower New Street car park – just metres form the current Green Lane proposition – so why the need for Green Lane if the multi-story is to be built.

Let’s not forget the long-term vision. A Farranfore to Killarney bypass is crucial.

By diverting through traffic away from the town centre, we can significantly reduce the pressure on our roads and parking facilities.

Killarney’s very success contributes to its parking woes. As an events capital, the town consistently attracts large crowds. The more parking we provide, the more it will be filled. So, while addressing the immediate need is essential, we must also focus on promoting sustainable transportation options and managing demand. only be used by those over 16, should not be used on footpaths, must have front and back lights, cannot go faster than 20 kilometres per hour, and must have a CE quality mark with their power output displayed.

Grady believes it's illogical that wearing a helmet and high-visibility clothing is only recommended and not mandatory.

He stressed that this issue needs to be addressed before someone is seriously injured or killed.

Town handled big double bill in its stride The bumper crowd that packed Killarney for the May bank holiday weekend was a clear illustration of just how well the town can cope with a major influx of visitors at any one time, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has said.

To be in a position to host both the International Rally of the Lakes and the Munster Senior Football Championship Final, on the same day, proves how well equipped Killarney is to accommodate two or more huge events, with relative ease and great comfort, at the same

time.

Organisers of the Rally of the Lakes estimate that the popular celebration of motorsport attracted between 20,000 and 25,000 people to town and that statistic was based on programme sales alone.

Clerk of the Course, Dermot Healy, said the weekend also highlighted how traffic can be managed if there are sufficient people assigned to manage it.

The Chamber acknowledged that the international publicity the rally will generate will be a huge boost to the town with images of the spectacular stages, in places like Moll’s Gap, being beamed into millions of homes around the world.

The Kerry v Clare Munster Final was another big hit with over 13,000 people in attendance at Fitzgerald Stadium and

9.05.2025 numerous others watching the game in local hostelries, hotels and beer gardens.

“The atmosphere around the streets for the entire weekend was immense and the double bill was a massive boost to local businesses,” said Chamber President Johnny McGuire.

“We congratulate Dermot Healy and Killarney and District Motor Club for, once again, ensuring their big event was professionally run and a great success and, as always, we thank Der Brosnan and the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee for presenting Killarney in the best possible light and ensuring the stadium looked resplendent on a glorious day of sunshine.”

He added that Killarney can look forward to another very busy weekend when Kerry entertain Roscommon in the first of the group games at Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday, May 17.

Blue Pool parking solution remains on long finger Concerns over parking issues at the popular Blue Pool amenity were raised at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting by Cllr John O’Donoghue.

INCREASED FIRE MONITORING IN NATIONAL PARK: Due to the recent period of dry weather, Killarney National Park is implementing increased fire monitoring this week. Park management has announced that drone and fire monitoring will be in operation 24/7 throughout the entire week, and an Amber Alert is currently in place. Cllr O’Donoghue inquired about the identification of funding streams and the progress of plans to provide parking at the Blue Pool.

He stated that the Blue Pool has seen improvements thanks to the work of National Parks and Wildlife Services staff and The Meitheal, making it a very popular spot for both tourists and locals.

However, he highlighted that parking on busy days is a major problem, with local residents fearing an accident at the entrance.

O’Donoghue believes the NPWS is open to suggestions and urged for the work to

proceed swiftly.

In response, a Kerry County Council official said that the council had previously engaged with the NPWS regarding this proposal, and there was an initial agreement for a proposed parking area.

This agreement would mean that the ownership of the parking area remained with the NPWS, while the Local Authority would handle its development and maintenance.

The council official noted that this proposed project aligns with the current criteria of the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) and could be considered for this funding in the future.

However, this would be dependent on addressing necessary requirements such as a final agreement with the NPWS, an environmental assessment, and statutory consent.

Public Consultations reopened for major town centre projects Public consultations for two development projects in Killarney have been reopened by Kerry County Council.

This follows what the council has described as a clerical error in online process of the initial public notices.

The projects affected are the Public Realm Improvements at Kenmare Place and Main Street, and the Redevelopment of the Áras Phádraig.

For the Public Realm Improvements at Kenmare Place and Main Street, Kerry County Council proposes to carry out enhancements that include converting Main Street into a one-way, 3.7m wide single-lane road with improved footpaths, public spaces, and landscaping.

The plans also involve changes to bus bays, raised crossings, and accessible parking.

The Redevelopment of the Áras Phádraig project includes the demolition of the existing Áras Phádraig building and the construction of a three-storey Theatre and Community building, a six-storey Primary Care Centre, a Public

Plaza, and other ancillary structures.

“It is important to note that this is a readvertisement of previous public notices, and any submissions or observations made in response to the original notices must be resubmitted to be considered,” said a council official.

Killarney Tidy Towns volunteers back on the road The dedicated volunteers of Killarney Tidy Towns are set to resume their popular Monday night town clean-ups this coming Monday, May 12.

The call is going out to all members of the community to lend a hand in keeping Killarney clean and tidy as the summer months approach. Volunteers are asked to assemble at the High Street car park

at 6pm.

"Come and join us, everyone can play a part in keeping our community clean and tidy," said Johnny McGuire. "Many hands will make the difference."

The weekly clean-ups are a vital part of the ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance the appearance of Killarney ahead of Tidy Towns judging later in the summer.

'Shaq' memorial walk raises €21k for Comfort for Chemo The family of the late Caoimhin 'Shaq' O'Donoghue has presented a cheque for €21,565 to Comfort for Chemo Kerry.

The money was raised through a walk held in memory of Caoimhin's 50th birthday.

A huge turnout for the walk, along with many online donations, contributed

to the substantial funds raised by the O’Donoghue Family.

Caoimhin, a popular and well-known figure, sadly passed away one year ago today (May 9).

Comfort for Chemo Kerry is currently fundraising €5 million for the fit-out of a new, purpose-built chemotherapy unit on the grounds of University Hospital Kerry.

New traffic calming measures for Park Road Kerry County Council has revealed its plans to introduce a series of traffic calming measures along Park Road.

The proposals aim to enhance safety for pedestrians and other road users.

The planned works include upgrades to existing pedestrian crossings.

The crossing located at the junction of East Avenue Road and Park Road near the Killarney Outlet Centre, is slated to become a wider shared crossing.

Similarly, the pedestrian crossing on

Park Road at Ardshanavooly Estate will also be upgraded to a wider shared crossing.

The council also intends to introduce two new controlled pedestrian crossings with traffic lights.

One new crossing is proposed near the Killarney Outlet Centre crossing, providing a safer route to the Friary Church.

The second new controlled crossing is planned near the Omniplex Cinema Killarney, facilitating safer access to the Circle K garage.

The proposals also include updates to the alignment of the planned Active Travel Route on Park Road, which aims to improve conditions for cyclists and pedestrians.

An Garda Síochána was consulted regarding the proposed pedestrian crossing before the public announcement of

these plans.

Notifications of the proposals were sent to the elected members of the Killarney Municipal District, An Garda Síochána, the Fire Service, the Health Service Executive, the Ambulance Services, and Bus Éireann.

Following a period for public consultation, the Director of Service for Roads and Transportation has recommended that the scheme be adopted without any amendments.

Safety concerns over new Fossa road layout At Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District Meeting, concerns were raised by two councillors regarding the safety of the new road layout in Fossa, particularly for large vehicles.

Cllr Brendan Cronin questioned the Transport infrastructure Ireland engineers who designed the road layout, specifically the narrowing of lanes to three meters from the Golden Nugget to the Gap Cross.

He asked if the engineers would take full responsibility in the event of accidents involving HGVs, buses, or large agricultural machinery, citing numerous complaints from the public.

The council's response also indicated that the National Road Authority is not responsible for the actions of a driver and that any road incident is a matter for the

parties involved and for An Garda Síochána to investigate.

An official reply said that "the onus is on every driver to adhere to the Rules of the Road and drive in a manner that is safe, legal and responsible, having due care and consideration for other motorists and road users whom they share the road with."

Cllr. Maura Healy-Rae also voiced concerns about the reduced carriageway in Fossa and asked Kerry County Council and TII if they were satisfied that large vehicles, including HGVs, buses, and agricultural machinery, could pass safely.

In response, council officials stated that Kerry County Council is confident the road design is in line with legal road markings. Kerry County Council stated that the project, which aims to provide traffic calming and enhanced facilities for

Tourism businesses network at Gleneagle Hotel event

Lonely Planet's Ireland editor falls for Killarney Killarney has received a glowing review from Amy Lynch, Ireland Editor with Lonely Planet, following her recent visit to the Wander Wild Festival.

Amy highlighted Killarney's vibrant atmosphere, stunning scenery, and its appeal to both international and domestic tourists. She particularly praised the town's role as a base for exploring County Kerry, its wide range of accommodation, excellent restaurants, lively pubs, and the variety of tours available.

LIVELY HUB

The Lonely Planet editor, who was visiting Killarney for the first time, admitted that even a long weekend wasn't enough to experience all that the bustling town has to offer. She recommends arriving early on a Friday to make the most of a visit, suggesting that weekdays can be less crowded and more affordable. While summer is a popular time to visit, she suggests spring or autumn as alternatives. She also highlighted the Wander Wild Festival in April as a great option for families, wellness enthusiasts, and outdoor adventurers.

One of the highlights of Lynch's trip was kayaking on Lough Leane in Killarney National Park. She described the views of the Macgillycuddy's Reeks mountain range as "unrivalled." She recommends Irish adventures for kayaking tours, not-

ing their professionalism and suitability for all levels, from beginners upwards.

Over 80 tourism businesses from across Kerry gathered at the Gleneagle Hotel for a special networking event organised by Fáilte Ireland in collaboration with Kerry County Council and the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation (KTIF).

The event aimed to foster greater collaboration within the county's tourism sector, encouraging businesses to work together and cross-promote their offerings.

The goal is to attract more visitors and inspire them to explore the diverse range of experiences Kerry has to offer.

The day included facilitated face-to-face networking sessions, bringing together accommodation providers, visitor attractions, activity and experience providers, and golf clubs.

These sessions were designed to help forge new connections and strengthen existing ones, with a focus on how businesses can collectively market Kerry as a

compelling destination with something for everyone.

Attendees also received updates on upcoming tourism initiatives for the county from Fáilte Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way team and Kerry County Council.

A panel discussion featuring key figures in the tourism industry highlighted the importance of cross-selling and networking within the Wild Atlantic Way region.

Pat O’Leary SIAD, Chair of the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation (KTIF) said: “The special thing about Kerry isn’t just its beautiful landscapes and history; it’s the unity of all sectors within our tourism county that truly sets us apart. I believe that coming together and networking are crucial for our county’s success. Events such as this give us the opportunity to showcase not only our amazing products but also to connect, collaborate, and create experiences that leave a lasting impact for our visitors.”

DELICIOUS FOOD

Amy also raved about the dining options in Killarney. She recommends Polly's for dinner and cocktails, praising its Mediterranean-inspired menu and focus on sustainability. For a taste of Killarney's famous pub scene, she suggests O'Connor's, a 100-year-old family-run pub with live traditional music every night, and JM Reidy's, which also serves pizza.

For early risers, she suggests a bracing dip at Dundag Beach, followed by a warm-up in Samhradh's mobile sauna.

Another unique experience she recommends is the Cow to Cone tour at Muckross Creamery, a working dairy farm that produces award-winning ice cream. The tour offers a fascinating look at the ice cream-making process and, of course, includes a tasting.

Despite her action-packed visit, Amy admits she left with an even longer list of things to do in Killarney. She hopes to return to climb Carrauntoohil, hike Torc Mountain, explore the Gap of Dunloe, and visit the Muckross Estate.

Family Fun Day kicks off Summer Racing season Killarney Races are starting their 2025 season with a Family Fun Day on Sunday.

This first day of their ‘MayFest’ will feature exciting jump racing, live music, and entertainment, along with plenty of food and drinks, creating a great summer festival feel.

For families, entry is free for all children under 14 who are with an adult. To make it extra fun for the kids, Killarney Races has teamed up with MACademy, a local

performing arts school, to provide lots of entertainment for children of all ages.

There will be two special kids’ zones: one on the lawn for younger children and another in the glass bar for older kids. Expect face painting, colouring competitions, mascot races, and more.

The glass bar will also have a special audio-visual setup with discos and magic shows throughout the afternoon. Live music will play on the lawn before, during, and after the racing.

Two more days of racing next week Following the Family Fun Day on Sunday Killarney Races will continue with evening meetings on Monday and Tuesday.

Monday evening will feature jump racing, while Tuesday evening will host flat racing.

These Monday and Tuesday race cards have often been good indicators for racing fans. For example, Gentlemen De Mee, who finished third in last year’s Boylesports An Roicht Steeplechase (Grade 3) at this meeting, went on to win the Topham Handicap Chase at the Aintree Grand National Festival.

Killarney Races announce ticket plans for the season Killarney Races has announced its ticket pricing plans for the 2025 season, with all race meetings going forward.

Rotary Club's Wine & Art Night raises €25,000

The Killarney Rotary Club's annual Wine & Art Night, held before Christmas, was another resounding success, raising a grand total of €25,000 for local community projects.

President Ciara Irwin Foley expressed the club's delight with the amount raised, thanking club members and everyone who contributed to this impressive sum.

She highlighted that this popular annual event directly supports vital local initiatives such as schools, clubs, and charities in the Killarney area.

Ms. Irwin Foley extended particular thanks to the event's long-standing key sponsors: Daly's SuperValu, Killarney Brewing & Distilling Co, and Killarney Credit Union, acknowledging their crucial and consistent support over the years.

The team at The Great Southern Killarney was also thanked for ensuring the smooth running of the event. Appreciation was also given to the businesses that sponsored door prizes and competitions, including The Rose Hotel, M.D. O'Shea's, CRL, and The Lake Hotel, as well as to Mike Neeson for providing entertainment.

The Wine & Art Night provides a valuable platform for local artists and craftspeople, with up to fifty showcasing their work.

Some artists have been involved since the event's inception, making it a wonderful networking opportunity. There is always significant interest from artists to participate in this worthwhile cause, with a percentage of their sales donated on the night. Many also generously donate their artwork for the auction, where 100% of the proceeds go directly to the beneficiary fund.

The beneficiaries themselves play an active role by selling tickets for the event in advance, using this as a key fundraising method for their own projects.

The schools, clubs, organisations, and charities involved put in tremendous effort, and it is always inspiring to hear how the funds raised have positively impacted them. For example, the Hospice sells their Christmas cards at the event, and the Irish Pilgrimage Trust sells raffle tickets to help bring local people to Lourdes at Easter. Organising the Wine & Art Night is a significant undertaking for the Killarney Rotary Club, with extensive preparations happening well in advance.

Third Killarney project delayed due to Council procedure issues Another major project in the Killarney area has been disrupted due to public consultation issues at Kerry County Council.

KC Print’s John Paul Doyle received an award and gift for his 11 year service at the Leisure Centre at Great Southern Hotel recently.

The latest project affected is the proposal for Traffic Management and Active Travel at the N22 MD O’Shea Roundabout to Ballycasheen Road Upgrade.

Last week's the Killarney Advertiser the Killarney Advertiser revealed that the redevelopment of Áras Phádraig, Lewis Road,and Public Realm Improvements at Kenmare Place and Main Street have been delayed due to an internal procedural error at Kerry County Council.

The error involves a number of submissions made through the online public consultation portal that were not taken into account during the process.

The consideration of the MD O’Shea Roundabout to Ballycasheen Road upgrade was initially scheduled for the Killarney Municipal District meeting on Wednesday this week.

As a result, the item was withdrawn from the meeting agenda. Kerry County Council has announced that it will be necessary to re-advertise the public consultation for this project. The council has stated that all those who made submissions during the original consultation will be contacted and given the opportunity to resubmit their observations.

Kerry County Council has apologised for the issues that have arisen and is encouraging all interested parties to participate in the new consultation process. Details of the new consultation will be advertised as soon as possible.

Sem ends 19-year wait for All-Ireland Basketball glory The St Brendan's College Under-15 basketball team has captured the 'A' All-Ireland League Final title, their first national basketball crown in nearly two decades.

In a thrilling match at the National Basketball Arena, the Killarney side defeated local rivals Castleisland Community College with a score of 42-34.

The final was a tense affair from the tipoff. Despite Castleisland having won their earlier encounter this season and chasing a double after already securing the All-Ireland Cup, the St Brendan's supporters filled the arena, passionately cheering on their team.

The game was neck-and-neck from the start, with both teams trading baskets.

By halftime, St Brendan's held a narrow 18-16 lead, setting up a tense second half. The third quarter saw each basket from the Killarney team answered by Castleisland, with the arena echoing to chants of "Seminary Victory!" as St. Brendan's edged ahead.

In the final minute, St Brendan's held

a slender 38-34 advantage. A crucial steal led to a well-worked team basket, extending their lead to 40-34. Superb defending from St Brendan's thwarted Castleisland's late efforts, and two late free throws sealed a 42-34 victory as Castleisland found themselves in foul trouble.

The final buzzer sparked scenes of jubilation among the St Brendan's supporters. Captain Daragh Keane proudly accepted the cup on behalf of the team.

Later that evening, the victorious team returned to Killarney to a hero's welcome, escorted through the town with local supporters waving and sounding their horns. Milltown masterplan reaches draft stage The Milltown Town Centre First Masterplan has progressed to the draft stage, marking a significant step forward for the town.

As the first location in Kerry to secure funding under the government's Town Centre First policy, Milltown is now in the final phase of public consultation as it looks to revitalise its community. This initiative is designed to breathe new life into towns and villages across the region.

Kerry County Council appointed Downey Consultants to work on the masterplan in partnership with the Council, the Milltown Town Team, and the local community. The draft plan focuses on six key areas, outlining potential actions to tackle some of the town's most pressing issues.

Now, Kerry County Council and the Town Team are seeking input from the wider community to ensure the masterplan truly reflects the hopes and needs of everyone in Milltown. The draft plan can be viewed online at www.kerrycoco.ie and feedback can be submitted via the QR code.

For those who prefer to engage in person, a drop-in event will be held at the Nagle Rice Community Centre on Monday, May 12, from 4.00pm to 7.30pm.

This will be an opportunity for the public to view the masterplan, ask questions of the consultants who developed it, and speak with representatives from Kerry County Council and members of the Town Team.

George Larkin celebrates century of Junior Parkruns

Six-year-old George Larkin has reached an amazing milestone, completing his 100th Junior Parkrun on May 4.

This achievement showcases his fantastic dedication and continues a proud family involvement in the event.

George was inspired to take up the weekly 2km runs by his older brother, John, and has become a well-known and happy member of the Killarney House Junior Parkrun community.

To celebrate this special occasion, George was presented with a commemorative wristband and a certificate recognising his accomplishment.

Before his run, he joined other young parkrunners for a celebratory group photo, highlighting the friendly and welcoming atmosphere of the parkrun.

George has been a part of the Killarney Junior Parkrun since it started in 2022, when he was just four years old.

As one of the original young runners, he has grown up with the event and helped it flourish each week.

What George loves most about parkrun is the relaxed and non-competitive environment.

Whether he feels like running, skipping, or jogging, he enjoys being able to go at his own pace. He also takes great pride in monitoring his progress and trying to beat his personal best.

Outside of parkrun, George is a student in Fossa and plays football with Fossa GAA.

This free event aims to inform the local community about sustainable energy and energy efficiency. Two speakers will lead the discussion. Catriona Fallon, a

Sustainable Energy Mentor from Dingle Hub, will explain the Sustainable Energy Communities scheme and how it could benefit homes, sports clubs, community halls, churches, and businesses in Fossa.

She will also address fundamental questions like "What is energy efficiency?" and "Why is renewable energy better for our community and environment?".

Joining her will be Karena McCarthy from Killarney Credit Union, who will focus on the financial aspects of investing in renewable energy and improving home energy efficiency. She will provide information on available loans for projects such as solar panels and details on relevant grants.

Man charged after €100k cocaine seizure A man in his 30s was charged and appeared before a special court sitting in Cork City on Monday morning following a significant drug seizure in Killarney.

New dining experiences at Aghadoe Heights

Gardaí, as part of Operation Tara, recovered approximately €100,000 worth of cocaine during a search of a residence in Killarney town on Friday last.

The Kerry Divisional Drugs Unit conducted the intelligence-led operation aimed at disrupting the sale and supply of drugs in the area.

During the search, Gardaí discovered suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of €100,000. The seized drugs have been sent to Forensic Science Ireland for further analysis.

The arrested man, who is in his 30s, was detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at a Garda Station in the county.

He was subsequently charged and appeared before a special sitting of Cork City District Court 11.00am on Monday this week.

Boxing brothers aim for European Championship Killarney boxing brothers, Jamesie and Pa Casey, have their sights set on representing Ireland at the upcoming European championships after a successful spring in the ring.

Both national champions for 2025, the talented siblings are in preparation for crucial national competitions. Pa is gearing up for the junior cadets in three weeks, while Jamesie will compete in the under-18 championships in July.

Victory in these national events would automatically earn both boys an invitation to the high-performance unit, bringing them a step closer to being selected for the Irish team heading to the European championships.

Big turnout for Emergency Services Day at Garda Station Gardaí in Kerry held a special open day at the Garda Station in Killarney, and lots of people from the community came along.

Members of the Gardaí from Killarney, the Roads Policing Unit, and the Scenes of Crime Unit were there. They were joined by people from other important services like the Kerry Fire Service, Civil Defence, Kerry Mountain Rescue, Killar-

ney Water Rescue, Order of Malta, Killarney Cardiac Response, and the Road Safety Authority.

Public support for Ireland’s EU membership falls to 13-year low Public backing for Ireland’s membership in the European Union has dipped to its lowest level since 2012, according to new research.

The survey, carried out by Amárach Research for European Movement Ireland (EMI), shows a drop-in support from 93% in 2019 to 82% in 2025.

Despite continued overall approval, EMI noted that 43% of respondents feel their opinions are not adequately represented at the EU level. Meanwhile, 47% expressed satisfaction with the EU’s current direction, although 26% reported dissatisfaction and 34% believe the EU is failing to

uphold its core values.

The EU's handling of migration (35%) and regulatory policies (24%) were cited as leading areas of concern.

Additionally, 24% expressed unease over EU militarisation. Nevertheless, half of respondents in the Republic of Ireland support enhanced EU defence and security collaboration, while 32% oppose it and 18% remain undecided.

Concerns were also raised about Ireland’s influence in EU decision-making, with 36% dissatisfied, coinciding with ongoing underrepresentation of Irish officials in EU institutions.

Now in its 12th year, EMI’s annual EU 2025 poll is the only all-island survey

focused specifically on European issues.

When asked about key concerns, 56% of respondents in the Republic identified the cost of living as the most pressing issue, especially among younger demographics. Other significant concerns included migration (53%), EU-US relations (44%), the EU’s approach to the Russia-Ukraine war (43%), Israel’s war on Palestine and housing (both 41%).

Support for a United Ireland within the EU was strong across the island, with 67% in Northern Ireland and 62% in the Republic in favour.

Gardaí and Revenue net €10M cannabis haul in Clare Gardaí and Revenue officers have seized cannabis herb with an estimated street value exceeding €10 million in County Clare. The operation, conducted on Wednesday, May 7, resulted in the arrest of two men in their 60s.

The joint operation, involving Gardaí from the Clare Divisional Drugs Unit and Limerick-based Garda units, was executed at a residential property in County Clare as part of ongoing investigations by Revenue and the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB).

These investigations are targeting the intricate networks involved in the distribution of illicit substances across the country.

During the operation, authorities discovered two pallets containing over 500 kilograms of cannabis herb. The estimated value of this substantial seizure is placed at more than €10 million.

The seized cannabis has been transferred to Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) for thorough analysis.

This successful operation falls under the umbrella of Operation Tara, an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy that has also carried out a number of successful operations in Kerry recently.

India and Pakistan exchange missile and artillery strikes Tensions between nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan have reached a dangerous new peak following a significant exchange of missile and artillery fire.

This major escalation comes in the wake of a deadly militant attack in the disputed region of Kashmir two weeks ago.

New Delhi has squarely blamed Islamabad for the attack on April 22 in Indian-administered Kashmir, which tragically claimed the lives of 26 civilians.

The aftermath of the attack saw a period of heightened diplomatic tensions and threats traded between the two nations, culminating in Indian missile strikes earlier today, local time. Pakistan swiftly responded with a vow to "settle the score," raising serious concerns about a further descent into conflict.

Earlier this week India announced that it had conducted "precision strikes at terrorist camps" located in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. However, Pakistan has reported a far more devastating outcome, stating that 26 civilians were

killed in these strikes, which targeted at least six locations and involved firing along the border.

According to sources the targeted areas include locations within Pakistan-administered Kashmir, as well as the cities of Bahawalpur and Muridke, situated in Pakistan's most populous Punjab province, which shares a border with India.

Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, speaking to AFP, asserted that their retaliation had "already started."

EU eyes tariffs on Boeing if trade tensions escalate The European Union is reportedly considering imposing tariffs on Boeing aircraft as it prepares a robust response should trade negotiations with the United States fail to yield a reduction in existing US levies on European goods.

Minister urged to clarify laws on serving nonalcoholic beer to minors Labour's Justice Spokesperson, Alan Kelly, has called on Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan to clarify the legal framework surrounding the sale of non-alcoholic beer to minors in pubs.

Kelly said the issue was brought to his attention by a pub employee who felt uncertain about whether it was appropriate to serve non-alcoholic drinks to underage customers, particularly when those drinks were purchased by adults.

"This is a concerning situation," Kelly stated. "There appears to be a legal grey area allowing children to be given non-alcoholic beer by adults in pubs."

He referenced a specific case raised by a staff member working in a busy pub, who reported witnessing a group of parents ordering 0% alcohol drinks for children.

The employee questioned whether refusing service in that scenario was appropriate. Kelly supported the decision, saying it aligned with the intention behind

existing licensing laws, although similar incidents had occurred elsewhere, according to the worker.

Kelly also raised practical concerns, noting that non-alcoholic drinks often look identical to their alcoholic counterparts, making it difficult for staff to monitor consumption.

"This puts an unreasonable burden on workers and could have serious consequences for licence holders if a child mistakenly or intentionally consumed an alcoholic version of the drink," he warned.

While acknowledging that the issue may not lend itself easily to new legislation, the Labour TD urged Minister O’Callaghan to clearly outline the legal stance on minors consuming 0% alcohol products in pubs.

"It’s up to the Minister for Justice to resolve this. Even if legislation isn’t the answer, we still need clear guidance," Kelly said. "Pub staff deserve clarity so that the law can be followed consistently and fairly."

According to a report in the Financial Times, the European Commission, the EU's executive arm responsible for trade policy, intends to include civilian aircraft on a list targeting approximately $100 billion worth of annual US imports.

Citing two individuals familiar with the matter, the report indicates that these potential measures would require approval by a weighted majority of EU member states. Crucially, the tariffs would only be implemented if ongoing discussions with Washington do not result in sufficient progress towards lowering US tariffs on European products.

The EU's trade commissioner, Maros Sefcovic, stated earlier in the week that the bloc was "under no pressure" to accept

an unfavourable tariff agreement with the US, signalling a firm stance in the trade dispute.

Neither Boeing nor the European Commission has yet issued an immediate response to requests for comment from Reuters regarding the report.

The EU currently faces significant US import tariffs, including a 25% levy on steel and aluminium, as well as on automobiles. Furthermore, the bloc is contending with so-called "reciprocal" tariffs of 10% on almost all other goods, which notably includes aircraft. These reciprocal tariffs could potentially double to 20% after a 90-day pause initiated by US President Donald Trump expires on July 8.

The prospect of tariffs on Boeing aircraft raises concerns for European airlines, in particular Ryanair, which have jets on order from the US manufacturer, anticipating continued growth in the aerospace market. The imposition of levies could lead to a substantial increase in the cost of these aircraft.

New policing authority begins public engagement drive The newly established Policing and Community Safety Authority (PCSA), which now oversees An Garda Síochána, is inviting public participation in a consultation aimed at shaping future policing priorities.

Elaine Byrne, Chairperson of the PCSA, emphasised that identifying these priorities is a key function of the Authority.

“Setting clear policing priorities helps define where focus is needed to enhance the delivery of policing services to the public,” she explained.

These priorities will also guide the PCSA’s

oversight activities and provide direction for the Garda Commissioner in formulating both the Strategic Plan and Annual Service Plan for An Garda Síochána.

Launched in April, the PCSA replaces the former Policing Authority. It has taken

on the majority of that body's responsibilities, with the addition of a new remit in community safety. Its core role is to independently monitor and evaluate Garda performance in delivering policing services.

As part of its consultation process for the 2026–2028 policing priorities, the PCSA has introduced a 10-minute online survey. Participants can assign points to the areas of policing they believe deserve the most attention.

According to Ms Byrne, the consultation is an important opportunity for public engagement.

“It’s vital that individuals and communities are given a voice in shaping the priorities for policing,” she said.

“By gathering a diverse range of views, we can better understand how policing can most effectively promote a sense of safety and well-being,” she added.

TY students brings smiles to nursing home There were smiles all around on Tuesday as Transition Year (TY) students from Killarney Community College spent a day at Killarney Nursing Home.

Community College students impress at STEAM event in Causeway Two teams of students from Killarney Community College travelled to Causeway Comprehensive School on Tuesday, April 29th, to take part in a STEAM event that celebrated creativity and innovation in science and sustainability.

(STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths.)

The college was proudly represented by a group of First Year students and a Transition Year (TY) team.

First Years Jack Barry, Aqeel Arif, and Dylan Fitzgerald showcased their creative and eco-friendly project — an aluminium flower designed to promote sustainability and biodi-

The students sang songs, played games, made art, and most importantly, spent time chatting and connecting with the residents. It was a day full of laughter, stories, and special moments that meant just as much to the students as it did to those living in the home.

The visit wasn’t just about fun - it was

a chance for the TY group to learn from the older generation and to hear first-hand about their lives and experiences. Many students said they were touched by the warm welcome they received and by the kind words and wisdom shared with them throughout the day.

Devine and O'Sullivan make history at Rally of the Lakes

The Clerk of the Course for the Rally of the Lakes, Dermot Healy, has issued a message reflecting on a successful weekend of rallying in Killarney.

Healy took the time to congratulate the winners and thank the many people who contributed to the event's success.

A major highlight of the weekend was the historic achievement of Callum Devine and Noel O'Sullivan, who secured their fourth consecutive overall victory.

This remarkable feat hasn't been seen at the event since the early 1990s.

Healy also extended congratulations to the runners-up, Meirion Evans and Ger Conway, and third-place finishers Matt Edwards and David Moynihan, noting the thrilling battle for the lead they provided throughout the weekend.

Local crew Rob Duggan and John McCarthy were also celebrated for their overall win in the Modified Category with their Ford Escort Mk2.

Further congratulations went to Alan Ring and Adrian Deasy, winners of the Historic Category in their BMW M3, and Darragh Walsh and Gary Lombard, who took the top spot in the Junior Category driving their Honda Civic.

Healy expressed immense gratitude to the numerous individuals and organisations that played a crucial role in making the event a success.

Foremost among these was the title sponsor, Assess Ireland, and its Chief Executive Officer Conor Deasy, for their invaluable and ongoing support.

Kelliher’s Toyota supports Evans and Conway in Rally of the Lakes Kelliher’s Toyota, backed Welsh rally driver Meirion Evans and his Kerry co-driver Ger Conway in the Rally of the Lakes last weekend.

Driving their Toyota Yaris Rally2, Evans and Conway finished second place overall in the two-day rally.

Before the rally started, Evans and Conway visited the Kelliher’s Toyota showroom in Tralee.

Treatment Benefit Scheme What is Treatment Benefit?

Treatment Benefit is a scheme run by the Department of Social Protection (DSP) to provide a limited financial contribution towards dental, optical and aural services. This scheme is available to insured workers, the self-employed and retired people who have the required number of PRSI contributions.

Under the Treatment Benefit Scheme, you may qualify for: • Dental benefit • Optical benefit • Hearing aids • Hair piece or wig You should contact your treatment provider to check your eligibility before proceeding with any treatment.

If you choose to have treatment in another EU member state, the DSP will pay an amount equivalent to the rate paid for similar treatments carried out in Ireland or the amount actually paid for the treatment - whichever is the lower. You must still have the qualifying PRSI contributions.

You must contact the Treatment Benefit Section before you travel to get an application form and details of the amounts the DSP will pay.

What is covered under Dental Benefit?

Under this scheme, the DSP pays the full cost of an oral examination once a calendar year.

A payment of €42 towards either a scale and polish or - if clinically necessary - periodontal treatment, is also available once a calendar year. If the cost of either cleaning or periodontal treatment is more than €42, you must pay the balance - capped at €15 for a scale and polish. There is no cap on the balance charged for periodontal treatment.

Treatment is provided by private dentists who are on the DSP's panel. Lists of dentists on the panel are available from the DSP. Most dentists are on the panel, so you should not have any difficulty finding one. The dentist will be able to check your eligibility and make a claim for you. The claim form will require details such as your Personal Public Service Number (PPS number), date of birth and signature. If you are a dependent spouse or civil partner, you should give the PPS number of the insured person, who will also be required to sign the claim form.

You may get tax relief on certain non-routine dental treatments.

What is covered under Optical Benefit?

The Treatment Benefit Scheme entitles you to a free eyesight test, once every 2 years. However, sight tests for VDUs and driving licences are not covered under the scheme.

You can get a set payment, once every 2 years, towards either one pair each of reading and distance spectacles, one pair

of bifocal or varifocals or one pair of contact lenses (including disposables). Cost will vary depending on the frames you choose. Basic frames are free.

The examination is provided by opticians, optometrists or ophthalmologists who have a contract with the DSP. Does the Scheme cover medical lenses?

If you need contact lenses for medical reasons, you can get up to €1,000 towards the cost of a pair of medical contact lenses (€500 for each contact lens) once every 2 years. This applies to a small number of eye conditions that make wearing glasses impossible. You must have a doctor's recommendation. Contact lenses are not available on purely cosmetic grounds. Contact lenses for optical purposes are available through the Optical Benefit scheme above.

Are Hearing aids available through this scheme?

Hearing aids may be provided by suppliers who have a contract with the DSP. The DSP pays the full cost of a hearing aid up to a maximum of €500 (€1,000 for a pair) once every 4 years. It also pays the full cost of repairs to aids, up to a maximum of €100, once every 4 years.

How can I get a hairpiece or wig through this scheme?

From 28 May 2022, you can get up to €500 for one hair replacement item such as a hairpiece or wig, in each calendar year. It does not cover surgical or topical treatments. Hair loss must be from a disease or treatment of a disease such as cancer or alopecia.

The types of alopecia covered are: • Alopecia areata (which includes alopecia totalis or universalis, diffuse alopecia areata, alopecia ophiasis) • Primary scarring alopecias (cicatricial alopecias) • Frontal fibrosing alopecia and lichen planopilaris (scarring alopecia) • Chemotherapy induced alopecia (anagen effluvium) • Alopecia resulting from surgery or trauma, including burns You must buy the hair piece or wig from the Department's list of approved providers.

How do I qualify for Treatment Benefit?

You must have paid Class A, E, H, P or S social insurance contributions. The amount of social insurance you need depends on your age.

(1) Aged under 21: If you are aged under 21, you may qualify if you have paid at least 39 contributions at any time.

(2) Aged 21-28: Between these ages you may qualify if you have paid at least 39 contributions and at least 39 paid or credited in the governing contribution year (2023 is the governing contribution year for claims made in 2025) or have 26

paid contributions in each of the second and third last contribution years. For claims made in 2025, the second last contribution year is 2023 and the third last contribution year is 2022 (3) Aged 29-65: From the age of 29 onwards, you must have at least 260 paid contributions and at least 39 paid or credited contributions in the governing contribution year (2023 is the governing contribution year for claims made in 2025) or 26 paid contributions in each of the second and third last contribution years. For claims made in 2025, the second last contribution year is 2023 and the third last contribution year is 2022.

(4) Aged 66 and over: There are special rules for people aged 66 and over. To qualify, you must have: 260 PRSI contributions paid at any time and 39 paid or credited contributions in the relevant tax year or the year immediately before it. The relevant tax year is the second last completed tax year before reaching 66 years of age. (For example, if you were 66 in 2021, the relevant tax year is 2019.)

Or 260 PRSI contributions paid at any time and 26 paid contributions in both the relevant tax year and the year immediately before it. The relevant tax year is the second last completed tax year before reaching 66 years of age. (For example, if you were 66 in 2020, the relevant tax year is 2018.)

There are, however, a number of exceptions to the above and you should contact your local Citizens Information Centre for more detailed information If you satisfy the conditions for Treatment Benefit when you reach pension age, you will remain qualified for life.

If you qualify for benefit at age 60–65, you retain that entitlement for life. If you have retired on grounds of ill health or you are considered to be unemployed, you can apply for Illness Benefit or Jobseeker's Benefit, subject to satisfying the statutory conditions. Your entitlement to these benefits may also lead to your being awarded credited contributions, which can be taken into account to extend coverage for treatment benefits for further periods.

Does a dependent spouse, civil partner or cohabitant have any entitlement to Treatment Benefit?

A spouse, civil partner or cohabitant may, of course, qualify in their own right if they have enough social insurance contributions. If your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant does not have enough social insurance contributions they may still qualify for Treatment Benefit on your social insurance record. To do this, you must qualify for Treatment Benefit and your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant must be dependent on you.

A dependent spouse, civil partner or cohabitant must: • Have a gross income of €100 or less per week. If earning more than €100 per week, he/she must have been dependent on you before entering or resuming insurable employment (at Class A, E, H, P or S).

• Not be getting a social welfare payment (except Disablement Pension, Supplementary Welfare Allowance, Carer's Benefit or Child Benefit). If getting Carer's Allowance or State Pension (Non-Contributory), he/she can qualify if he/she was dependent on you immediately before getting the Allowance or Pension.

If an insured person dies and the dependent spouse or civil partner was entitled to benefit at the time of the death, they retain entitlement for as long as they remain widowed or a surviving civil partner.

How do EU regulations apply to Treatment Benefit entitlement?

If you were previously insurably employed in a country covered by EU Regulations and you do not qualify on your Irish PRSI record, your social insurance record in the other EU country may be used to help you qualify for Treatment Benefit. You must have paid at least one reckonable PRSI contribution (Classes A, E, H, P and S) since your return to Ireland.

How to apply for Treatment Benefit?

Claims are made through your provider (dentist, dispensing optician/optometrist/ophthalmologist or audiologist), who can check your entitlement in advance of treatment and claim payment afterwards.

Your provider will require some information to identify you, such as your date of birth and PPS number. Prior to treatment, you will need to sign a Consent Form agreeing to your provider having this information and giving your consent to have this information supplied to the Department of Social Protection, to enable payment of your claim.

If you are claiming as a dependant under the PRSI record of your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant, both you and your spouse or partner will need to sign the Consent Form.

For treatment received in other EU member states, you contact the Treatment Benefit Section to confirm your eligibility.

If eligible, you send your receipts to the Treatment Benefit Section along with a letter containing your contact information and details of your bank account (account name, number and sort code) into which payment will be made.

Kerry FC unveil former Cork City and Irish women’s coach Healy as new boss There’s a new manager in the hot seat at Mounthawk Park as Kerry FC have confirmed that highly rated coach Colin Healy has taken over from Conor McCarthy with immediate effect. Killarney man McCarthy will continue to be part of the coaching staff.

Healy’s reputation within Irish football is such that his appointment must be considered a significant statement of intent by the club and their chairman, John Wall.

After a fine playing career that included spells with Sunderland, Ipswich and Celtic, plus 13 caps for Ireland, the Cork native turned his attention to coaching, working with Cork City and, most recently, the Irish women’s team. He had been out of the game since the FAI controversially decided to not renew his contract as assistant manager at the end of 2024.

“The last year has been the toughest of my life since losing my wife, Kelly,” Healy said upon his unveiling as Kerry man-

Clifford’s numbers bode well for summer Adam Moynihan on David Clifford’s ‘frightening’ efficiency in front of the posts It’s a pity we didn’t get a spectacle to match the setting last Sunday as Kerry strolled to an easy victory over Clare in Killarney. With the sun beating down from majestic blue skies and the mountains towering proudly in the distance, the terrace in the Fitzgerald Stadium felt like the only place in the world to be.

Then the ball was thrown in and within 10 minutes the majority of the crowd were internally debating what was the earliest socially acceptable point of the game they could head back into town.

The home team led by nine – 2-4 to 0-1 – before the clock reached the ten-minute mark. The game was over as a contest already and but for the weather and the views, the crowd of 13,000 would have slinked away far quicker than they did. Most lasted until the second half, at least. Only the die-hards stayed around for Gavin White’s trophy lift.

Whatever about the entertainment levels, the really disappointing part is that Jack O’Connor really learned nothing from this Munster final. Kerry were good, to be fair. They moved the ball well and took their early chances, quickly obliterating any miniscule hope Clare had of a repeat of 1992. Hyper-critics might look at Clare’s tally of 0-21 and question Kerry’s defence but the reality is that 19 of those points came after the game was won. The lead was 15 at halftime and it was 11 by the close of play, but it could have been double that if Kerry were that way inclined.

Generally speaking there are a number of reasons to feel good about Kerry as they approach the All-Ireland group phase. For me, one key factor that seems to be garnering little public attention is the form of David Clifford, specifically his incredible efficiency in front of the posts.

In his last two games against Cork and Clare, Clifford has taken 16 shots, scoring 2-14 (including two two-pointers).

That’s an average of 1.25 points per shot. Frightening stuff.

He has missed just twice: the contested “over the post” shot from close range against Cork, and his third attempt at goal against Clare which crashed against the crossbar.

So, even when he has missed, he has only missed by centimetres.

Clifford scoring at will is nothing new but the fact that he isn’t shooting wides is not only a sign of excellent accuracy, it’s also a sign of excellent shot selection, and getting his shots off closer to goal.

Given his strength, skill levels, speed and range of motion, this is a player who can realistically get some kind of shot off every single time he gets the ball if that’s what he wants to do. He has never been a selfish player but we all know he has, on occasion, taken on extra responsibility in terms of scoring, which has led to shooting from all kinds of angles and distances. He regularly scores outrageous points but some of these speculative efforts are bound to go wide on occasion.

However, in recent weeks the majority of Clifford’s shots have been taken from inside the 20m line or the old ‘D’. Clearly the new rules are making it easier to find openings in attack – in the past, he had to take pot shots from distance just to keep himself and Kerry ticking over – but he is also choosing his shots wisely, often working it closer to the posts by taking on his man 1 v 1, by taking an extra play to settle himself when he has space, or by using his teammates to play neat one-twos. His shooting efficiency in the Munster Championship is a testament to this refined approach.

Kerry fans will be hoping for similar stats throughout the summer – with the odd two-point bomb thrown in for good measure.

A glorious day at B Eamonn Fitzgerald enjoyed the sunshine – and Kerry’s appetite for goals – at Sunday’s Munster final Earth has not anything to show more fair: Dull would he be of soul who could pass by A sight so touching in its majesty Those words of Wordsworth describing his experience of early morning London in 1802 sprang to mind on Sunday at one o’clock. Killarney was the place to be with the International Rally of the Lakes drawing huge crowds, and my preference on this occasion was the Fitzgerald Stadium for the 2025 Munster final between Kerry and Clare.

It turned out as predicted. Kerry won easily, cushioned by four early goals. It was an 86th title for the Kingdom, and a disappointing three-in-a-row of Munster final defeats for the Banner County.

They will bank their hopes on their hurlers versus Tipperary at Ennis on Sunday, where it will be ‘do or die’ to stay in contention for the MacCarthy Cup. I expect them to do just that, even if they have to call on Biddy Early, the Irish herbalist and bean-feasa (seer/wisewoman), who helped her neighbours so often and came up with cures for the poverty-stricken locals in Clare. Was she the first to use the potion in the magic bottle?

Get in early was my plan and savour the scene on Munster final day in the Fitzgerald Stadium, one of my favourite places of fond memories. The Michael O’Connor Terrace is always my preference, commemorating the late great Coiny O’Connor who did trojan work, carrying on the dream of Dr Eamon O’Sullivan, who spearheaded Dr Crokes’ decision in March 1932 to buy Dan Courtney’s field for £750. Coiny should have been president of the GAA, but he died suddenly and prematurely at the May Races many years ago.

FINE WEATHER

I didn’t think we would have a close en-

counter against Clare like that enthralling game in Páirc Uí Chaoimh a few weeks ago, but the admission fee on Sunday last was well worth it as the Good Lord continued the fine weather, and the sunkissed crowd swapped a trip to Rossbeigh, Lahinch, or Fanora for The Park.

Con Houlihan sprang to mind with that big, greasy, dull green anorak hiding that super mind. He was never one for the press box anywhere, be it Cheltenham, St Pat’s Inchicore or Croke Park. He treasured the Munster finals, and you’d meet him in Jimmy O’Brien’s for post-match analysis. The hand over his mouth explained the shyness of this wordsmith par excellence, all long hand in his often-undecipherable handwriting, which contained gems.

Another man for gems was Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, who often said to me that one of his favourite days in sport was in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Munster final day, Kerry v Cork, which started for him with Mass in the Friary. He said that the quality of the sound there was up to studio standard.

That’s some praise.

At one stage, over 48,000 spectators attended the Munster finals in The Park (the official

returns, not counting those who were sitting on the surrounding walls). 43,638 attended the 1937 All-Ireland hurling final at Fitzgerald Stadium between Tipperary and Kilkenny. That was pre-health and safety regulations, which now caps the capacity at circa 38,000, all prepaid via modern technology. Last week, I said the Munster Council would be lucky to get 15,000 for a Clare v Kerry final. It was just over 13,000. For a traditional Cork v Kerry final, it would have more than doubled.

The pitch looked magnificent. Full credit to Der Brosnan and the grounds staff of CE Scheme workers. Memories of great games at club and county levels rolled back the years: the dry sod, the high bounce of the ball, the white lines and the pre-match drills.

It still amazes me that so much of the pre-match warm-up is given to sprints and mock games at close quarters. In today’s game, under the new rules, the bonus of two-pointers should get more

pre-match practice experience. In that way, players can judge the strength and direction of the wind just by having a go. Some attempts will go over, others won't, but surely you will learn to adapt to the prevailing conditions. In real match time, you will instinctively know when an attempt at a two-pointer should be the preferred choice.

I still pose the question: are the players too conservative and afraid of the damned stats? Four shots for points and only scoring just one is a poor 25% return. That may well decide if you are starting or not in the next game. Maybe that explains why Kerry players don’t attempt too many two-pointers, or are they allowed to do so by management?

Despite all the possession, only Seánie and David notched two-pointers on Sunday last.

That makes sense, even though I have been critical in the past under the old rules that Kerry did not adopt this ploy, especially with the best forward in Ireland inside. You don’t own a Ferrari to leave it unused for the most part.

Kerry are scoring goals. Great. Well done to all concerned, hitting four early ones on Sunday last, but using the two-point bonus must also be in the game plan. On the road to Croker, the marriage of goals and two-pointers will be necessary to bring Sam home to Kerry. The new rules facilitate freedom of expression and individual creativity, which draws gasps from spectators. “Well, wasn’t that pure genius

The parade is a telling moment for all players, especially for the captains. Gavin White led the Kerry team. The local man had an extra quota of his fellow club players starting due to the unavailability of some regular starters. There were two more on the match panel. He didn't know at that stage that six Dr Crokes players would get match time.

Then that special moment for Amhrán

na bFhiann. Any player who experiences singing our national anthem will tell you that it is a goosebumps moment. I have been critical of how poorly managed these special few moments are in big games. Think of Cardiff Arms Park on the day of a home international rugby game, and the meaningful way the Welsh Anthem is sung by the main singer leading a packed stadium. From the very first line of the anthem on Sunday last I knew that the live singer not alone had a beautiful voice but she understood the lyrics, delivered with precise diction, accuracy and meaningful understanding of the words, such a welcome change from other live performances that I had to endure by good singers who had no understanding of the meaning of the song and slurred over mispronounced words and phrases.

Later, I found out that the singer was Heather de Grae, who has been singing in Scór since she was 8 years old. Brilliant.

SOME OBSERVATIONS

The players slotted into their respective places. Referee Noel Mooney from the Cavan Gaels checked that all was in order for the throw-in between Joe O’Connor and Brian McNamara. Barry Dan and David Walsh went to the edge of where the sideline and halfway line meet. However, Barry Dan, who had a great game, was too eager to start, and he made several attempts to move into the throw-in area, as did the respective centre backs and forwards. The linesman should have alerted the referee to stop and start all over. That is the whole point of the new rule allowing the two midfielders to jump for the clean catch.

Joe O Connor won the throw-in at the start of the game and after half-time. Of course, some midfielders just punch it forward to their encroaching forwards.

Kerry played well, adopting the correct tactics for a Division 1 side, asserting supremacy over a Division 3 team that would not match the intensity of the top team. The gulf in class was great. Go allout on attacks from the start and pile on the scores. Brilliantly done, and as early as the 10th minute, the dye was cast. Result to follow. The goals killed Clare. Well done, Kerry.

Even with new rules, there is a strong case to be made for the goalkeeper to use the short kickout judiciously because it is a safer option than the long kickout to the crowded midfield, where the ball lands and invariably is broken. There is a danger of the kick going directly over the sideline or being punched in 75% of cases. Shane Murphy made very good choices in kicking short to well-placed colleagues, where Kerry could build from the back. Clare made it easy for them by not pressing forward.

With higher quality opposition in future games, there will be pressure on the kickout. Murphy had a fine game, and it was good to see that he is not delaying as much with the kickout as heretofore.

Looking ahead, Kerry will have no wakeup call versus Roscommon in The Park on Sunday week. Cork will offer decent

opposition, and a game against the losers of Meath v Louth at a neutral venue won't provide a searching test, especially for the backs.

When Diarmuid O’Connor becomes available, he may well slot in to better effect at wing forward and as a third midfielder.

SPORT SNIPPETS

Congrats to local man Noel O’Sullivan and Callum Devine from Derry on winning the International Rally of the Lakes, completing that four-in-a-row. Also, to the organisers of the event, where safety was of paramount importance. It certainly disrupted householders in certain areas, but all went off safely. Our prayers are with the family of the young girl in Cork who was tragically killed.

Plenty of sports are on offer this weekend. My choices will be Munster at Thomond Park tonight in a must-win game. Jack McGowan, the former Wanderers star, predicts that Munster will upset the odds at home and further backs Leo Cullen, who has been highly criticised for Leinster’s recent defeat. It’s the fault of the players -many internationals who should shoulder the blame. Look at Cullen’s record managing Leinster to so many successes.

Kerry FC take on Treaty United tonight in Mounthawk Park with kick-off at 7.45pm.

Also this weekend it’s Meath v Louth in the Leinster final; the losers will meet Kerry in the group phase.

Then one can look forward to four days at Killarney’s May Races. You will not get a more picturesque setting, especially if this fine weather continues.

Killarney Athletic U16 PREMIER: Tralee Dynamos 1-3 Killarney Athletic Darragh O’Donoghue x 1 Leo Allen x 1 Jack Fleming x1. Our U16s rounded off a very good league campaign with a decent win away to Tralee Dynamos. With both squads down a few bodies, there was plenty of good football between the teams, with really good goals from Darragh, Leo and Jack. We look forward now to our cup final with Killarney Celtic on May 10th.

U13 GIRLS CUP 1/4 FINAL: Fenit 0-4 Killarney Athletic. Leah Heinemann x 2 Clodagh Hegarty x 1 Erica Maloney x 1.

Our U13 girls progressed to the semi-final of the cup on Saturday afternoon with a well-deserved win away to Fenit. Both sets of players put on a great display of football, with Athletic taking their chances in front of goal. We look forward to the draw on Monday evening and hopefully a chance to book a final slot on May 10th.

Thanks to Fenit for a very sporting game and the ref on the day for officiating.

GIRLS U12 DIVISION 3: Camp FC 2-0 Killarney Athletic A. On a beautiful Friday evening in Camp, the Division 3 league final played out with Camp FC v Killarney Athletic Blues against each other.

It turned out to be a thrilling encounter between the two evenly matched teams. Athletic put on early pressure and put Camp on the back foot. On the 9th minute, Peg Fleming made a dashing run down the right and crossed to Caitlin Hickey who got the shot off but fired just over the bar. On the 16th minute with some confusion in the Camp defence, the ball fell for Sinead Coleman, whose shot was saved brilliantly by the Camp goalkeeper. Maya Lesniak made some great saves in the first half, but on the 19th minute, Camp got a breakthrough Athletics defence and slotted home for 1-0. In the second half, Camp again pilled on the pressure. Holly O’Connor, Maebh Coughlan, Isabelle Tagney, and Rian O’Donnell were immense in defence holding the line, but were unlucky in the 37th minute when a deflected shot saw its way into the Athletic net. 2-0. Maya, in great form, continued to keep shots out of her goal preventing Camp extending their lead. From then on Athletic, pushed forward, showing great courage and conviction, with Muireann O’Sullivan, Suin Cotter, Brid Ni Shuilleabhain and Abbey Reidy playing some great balls through to their forwards. On the 42nd minute, Flora Walsh played a lovely ball in towards goal, Sinead Coleman timed her run perfectly to beat the offside and get her shot off, but it was saved only on the line by the goalkeeper. In the dying minutes of the game, Athletic gave it their all, with Flora Walsh having two great shots on goal, but were saved by the Camp goalkeeper. Congrats to Camp for a great game and on their win. Well done to our girls who gave it their all and put on a great performance for their fam-

U13 TROPHY SEMI-FINAL: Castleisland B 0-5 Killarney Athletic B. Malik Jinad x 3 Trey Hurley x 2. POTM: Malik Jinad. The U13B boys travelled to Castleisland on Saturday morning for the trophy semi-final. The lads played well throughout the game and earned a comfortable win in the end. Trey Hurley scored a brace including a brilliant direct free. Captain for the day, Malik Jinad, led from the front scoring a superb hat-trick. Thanks to Castleisland for the sporting game. Well done to Athletic on progressing to the final!

But Athletic came back with a double salvo before half time to leave Celtic leading 3-2 at half time. Celtic regained their composure to extend the lead through Graham O'Reilly and Stephen McCarthy but Athletic came back and gained a point. Celtic stay top of the division as they continue their quest for a place in the final.

JIMMY FALVEY YOUTHS SHIELD SEMI-FINAL: LB Rovers 0-5 Killarney Celtic. Luca Mosca 2, Pa O'Brien, Cillian Coffey, Joshua Williams. The Youth team had a clearcut win over LB Rovers as they qualified for the Jimmy Falvey Shield Final where they will meet Iveragh Utd. U14 PREMIER: Castleisland 1-0 Killarney Celtic. Celtic just came out the wrong side of a tight game played on the bank holiday Monday.

U12 PREMIER: Iveragh Utd 1-1 Killarney Celtic. Erik Dominguez. Celtic finished their league campaign with a share of the points away to Iveragh. Erik Dominguez netted in the 2nd half as Celtic came from behind to gain a point. The team finished runners up in the league but still are involved in the Cup. HOUSE OF UPHOLSTERY WOMEN'S CUP: Castleisland 0-2 Killarney Celtic.

Eabha Lyne, Ellie Mai Nugent. Killarney Celtic captured the Women's Cup after a very competitive encounter with Castleisland last Sunday. Celtic struck after 15 mins when Hannah Casey set up Eabha Lyne who finished to the net. Castleisland came into the game more, but

Celtic's defence held firm and finally with time almost up Ellie Mai Nugent struck to seal the victory. Well done to players and management.

LOL O'LEARY U16 CUP SEMI-FINAL: Listowel Celtic 1-4 Killarney Celtic. Holly Forrest 3, Sadbh O'Halloran. A great performance from the U16 girls saw them qualify for the final of the LOL O'Leary Cup. Killarney were more clinical in front of goal on the day against old rivals Listowel and the team now move on to the SFAI Subway U16 National Trophy final vs Granada FC in Kilkenny on this Sunday May 12th.

Killarney Legion GAA U16 BOYS: U16 East Kerry League Div 2 Semi-Final - Killarney Legion B 5-16 Gneeveguilla A 2-9. Our U16B team qualified for a Division 2 final by defeating Gneeveguilla in the semi-final in Direen on Thursday evening. Playing with the wind in the first half, the boys worked some great team scores and led at the interval by 2-9 to 0-6. Gneeveguilla started the second half strongly and reduced the gap. A few timely goals saw us reestablish the lead and run out good winners in the end. Well done to all 19 boys who all contributed well to the win.

Thanks to Gneeveguilla for a good game and to Brendan Brosnan for excellent officiating. Our U16A team qualified for the Division 1 East Kerry League Final after a chaotic 13 a side game in Direen on Sunday morning. The boys played some excellent football throughout the first half but left numerous gilt-edged goal chances behind them. Cordal were more efficient with their chances, and at half time, we led 3-12 to 4-4. With the aid of the wind, Cordal dominated the opening 15 minutes of the second half and scored 2-3 without reply to lead by four. The introduction of a few subs in the last 15 mins gradually wrestled back control of the game, and the boys eventually prevailed by 4 points. Thanks to Cordal for a fine game and to Evan Horan for excellent officiating. The boys will meet either Kilcummin or Firies in the final at a date yet to be decided. Final score Killarney Legion 7-17 Cordal 7-13.

HEALTHY CLUB: Kilcummin GAA and LGFA will be applying to take part in the Healthy Club Initiative in Autumn 2025.

We have recently formed a Healthy Club Committee with representatives from various aspects of club life to work towards gaining 'Healthy Club' status. The aim of the GAA Healthy Club is to make every GAA club a hub for health and well-being in the community, encouraging and supporting better physical, social and mental well-being for all members of our community. We are keen to hear the opinions of members of the club and the local community on what you think we should start/stop or continue. We would really appreciate it if you would take 5 minutes to complete this survey. Please ask a member of the executive for the link.

WELLBEING WALK: Kilcummin GAA & LGFA Healthy Club Committee welcome members of the club and local community to a wellbeing walk on Thursday the 15th of May between 7-8pm on the walking track. This is part of the Hello, How are you? Campaign by Mental Health Ireland. Hello, How Are You? is a campaign about connection and engaging in open conversations about mental health. The campaign asks individuals, communities, workplaces, friends & family to say Hello and ask the question ‘How Are You?’ in a meaningful way. Asking this small question and having one conversation can make a real difference in someone’s life. Creating, maintaining and staying connected with others helps tackle loneliness, creates a sense of belonging and purpose and builds relationships. People are welcome to join us on the track to walk a couple of laps while connecting with others. Looking forward to seeing you all on the 15th at any stage between 7-8pm. This event is open to all. You do not need to be a member of the walking track to take part in this particular event.
