Minister Peter Burke visits South Kerry Jobs Fair

Minister for Enterprise, Tourism, and Employment Peter Burke visited Killarney on Thursday, where he attended the South Kerry Jobs Fair at the Great Southern Hotel.

The event, organised by South Kerry Development Partnership CLG (SKDP), has become a major annual opportunity for both job seekers and employers.

With over 1,500 attendees this year, the fair continues to attract companies from a wide range of industries, including Hospitality, Health & Social Care, Engineering, Education & Training, Financial

Services, and Manufacturing. In addition to job opportunities, the fair offered workshops on CV tailoring, upskilling, and interview techniques, helping job seekers enhance their prospects.

SKDP Enterprise Officer Joanne Griffin said she was very pleased with the event overall. “The numbers attending were on par with last year and the employers

present said they were delighted with the quality of the potential job seekers they met,” she said. Joanne noted that the jobseekers attending were very happy with the range of employers in attendance and the quality of the workshops that took place.

During his visit, Minister Burke also met with key figures in local tourism, including Brian Lawlor of the O’Donoghue Ring Collection of Hotels and the chair of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation.

Attending the South Kerry Jobs Fir were Paudie O Shea; Kathy Sheahan; Noel Spillane; Carol Naughton; Minister Peter Burke; Joanne Griffin; Julie Thorne; Jennifer Riney; Catherine Tierney; John Cronin and Michael Cahillan. Photo: Anastashia Harbera

Danny Healy-Rae brings

three

Killarney issues to the Dáil

Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae has called for significant investment in Kerry’s infrastructure, and the opening of the new community hospital.

He warned that the county has been "left behind for years."

Speaking during the Programme for Government Statements in Dáil Éireann on Wednesday, Healy-Rae stressed the urgent need for road improvements and the opening of the hospital

TRAFFIC ISSUES

Healy-Rae highlighted growing traffic congestion in Killarney, describing the town as being in a "desperate state."

He called for the bypass project to be expedited to ease traffic pressure and prevent visitors from avoiding the town, which he warned was negatively impacting businesses and tourism providers.

"We need to do something in the interim

to ensure the traffic is freed up in Killarney," he said.

The Kerry TD also criticised delays in road repairs, noting that there are over 660 roads on local improvement scheme list on the waiting list for upgrades.

With only 24 roads being completed each year, he insisted the rate should be quadrupled to at least 100 per year to clear the backlog in six to seven years.

Healy-Rae expressed frustration over delays in key projects, particularly the upgrade of Blackwater Bridge to Sneem, which was "shovel-ready" in January 2024 but did not receive funding.

He also raised concerns about the condition of historic bridges such as Listry Bridge and Boston Bridge, many of which were built over 200 years ago for horse and cart traffic and are no longer fit for modern transport needs.

In addition to infrastructure concerns, Healy-Rae called for immediate action to open the new community hospital in Killarney.

“We need all hospitals properly staffed and immediate action taken to open the Community Hospital in Killarney without further delay,” he said.

A proposed footbridge to connect the Killarney Bus Station and Railway Station has been deemed a low priority by the National Transport Authority (NTA), despite calls from local representatives and concerns about accessibility.

Deputy Michael Cahill TD recently raised the issue in a Parliamentary Question, highlighting the need for a direct link between the two stations. Currently, passengers, particularly those with luggage, buggies, disabilities, or the elderly, face a difficult journey navigating between the facilities.

A 2019 review by Irish Rail, commissioned by the NTA, identified a pedestrian bridge spanning the railway tracks as the preferred solution. The plan also includes lifts and steps on both sides of the tracks, along with a minor reduction in the length of a railway siding. The estimated cost of the project is €5 million. However, the NTA has stated that due to the need to address “acute accessibility deficiencies” at other stations and the “limited funding environment,” the Killarney footbridge is not being progressed at this time.

Despite the setback, the NTA indicated that a Local Transport Plan (LTP) currently being developed by Kerry County Council may include the proposed link or explore other options to improve local connectivity.

Deputy Cahill expressed disappointment with the NTA’s response, stating Killarney’s status as a tourist town with significant foot traffic between the stations. He argued that the project should be given priority due to the existing accessibility challenges. Cahill also pointed out the relatively low cost of the footbridge compared to larger infrastructure projects like the €9.5 billion MetroLink in Dublin.

Hotel staff recycle for Alexis

Staff at The Ross Hotel Killarney have raised over €500 for ’Let's Help Alexis O'Mahony’ by collecting and recycling plastic bottles left in guest rooms.

The accommodation and maintenance team, led by Joanna Michniak, spearheaded the initiative, turning discarded bottles into funds through the Deposit Return Scheme.

Teresa and Alexis O'Mahony accepted

the donation, which will assist with Alexis' ongoing physiotherapy and medical expenses.

Pam Tracey, Chairperson of ‘Let's Help Alexis’ said: “The committee and I are extremely grateful to Joanna and the wonderful team at The Ross Hotel Killarney for selecting 'Let's Help Alexis' as the recipient of this fantastic initiative. A huge well done to all involved in this thoughtful and impactful project.”

There has been a widespread welcome in Killarney for the decision to grant planning permission for a raised platform over a scenic walkway and cycleway in the national park that will provide spectacular views over Muckross Lake and the surrounding landscape.

The project, which will complete the existing Dinis to Torc loop, will be built on an elevated platform to maintain and protect the natural habitat beneath.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service said the most significant benefit will be on safety grounds as pedestrians and cyclists enjoying the attraction must currently travel along the busy N71 road to complete the route.

This new raised cycleway and walkway feature will connect the Dinis car park and Torc car park and it will remove any requirement for people to take a risk by travelling on the main Killarney-Kenmare road.

Currently, the only possible option is via an 800m dangerous stretch of the N71, where cyclists and pedestrians are forced to share the narrow road, which contains several dangerous bends, with vehicular traffic, including tour buses.

The new development will feature spectacular, elevated views across Muckross Lake and it will be fully accessible for people with disability or mobility issues.

The planning permission was granted subject to 18 conditions.

Welcoming the development, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce

said the finished Dinis to Torc Loop will be yet another major attraction for locals and visitors to enjoy safely.

Killarney welcome for loop walk planning decision

“Safety was always our main concern as the narrow and winding N71 is not suitable for walkers and cyclists to travel safely,” Chamber said.

“This development is well overdue having been mooted and discussed at length for more than a decade”.

The loop offers one of the best ways to experience the incredible beauty of Killarney National Park with opportunities to explore historical sites like Muckross Abbey, Dinis Cottage and Old Weir Bridge.

“The new addition will offer an accessible option with gentle inclines and it is suitable for all, whether one is a seasoned hiker or just looking for a peaceful walk in nature, and the project will have minimal environmental impact,” the Chamber executive noted.

“We are very grateful to the NPWS and

all those who worked so hard to get this project over the line and we look forward to the work being completed at an early stage.”

The planning decision has also been enthusiastically welcomed by the Kerry Tourism Industry Confederation.

Chairperson Pat O’Leary said this piece of infrastructure is long overdue, primarily on safety grounds on such a dangerous section of roadway.

“The benefit to both locals and visitors as an amenity will be immense as it will become an iconic feature of the renowned Dinis loop route,” he said.

“Continued investment in tourism-related infrastructure in the county is critical to preserving the county's reputation as the tourism capital of Ireland.

“The commitment of Kerry County

Council, NPWS, Fáilte Ireland and other State bodies to the ongoing development of the tourism product in Kerry is to be commended,” Mr O’Leary stated. Irish Hotels Federation Kerry branch Chairman Brian Lawlor said the completed project is going to have a huge impact and it will make such a wonderful attraction more accessible to locals and visitors and much safer for everybody to use.

”With the huge amount of people that want to visit and appreciate the sheer beauty of Killarney, this really has the potential to be a game-changer,” he said.

“From Killarney’s point of view it’s another wonderful attraction and for those that appreciate the great outdoors and splendid scenery, it is a real bonus,” Mr Lawlor said.

Musical Society’s rehearsals

are in full swing ahead of 'Evita'

Killarney Musical Society is in the midst of rehearsals for their forthcoming production of Evita, the world-renowned musical created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist extraordinaire Tim Rice.

When these two creative souls get together you are always assured of something very special.

KMS is excited and honoured to be in the throes of production for their 39th show, due to be staged at the Gleneagle INEC Arena from March 11 to 13.

Evita concentrates on the life of Eva Peron, the second wife of Argentine president Juan Peron.

The story gives you an insight into her early life, using her beauty and charisma to rise to power, her charitable work and the incredible love the Argentine people had for her, and sadly her untimely demise at the age of 33 on July 26, 1952.

Evita began as a rock opera in 1976 and premiered in the Prince Edward Theatre, London in June 1978.

Countless worldwide productions, numerous cast albums and a string of professional tours have since followed.

Now it’s the turn of Killarney Musical Society to stage this iconic musical.

Musical numbers include such hits as ‘Buenos Aires’, ‘High Flying Adored’, ‘On this Night of a Thousand Stars’, ‘Oh what

a Circus’, ‘Another Suitcase in Another Hall’, and of course that much loved anthem ‘Don’t Cry for Me Argentina’.

Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster. ie and the Gleneagle INEC Arena Box Office only.

INTRODUCING

DAVID QUANE AS CHE

David is a newcomer to Killarney Musical

Society but no stranger to Killarney as his roots originate in Fossa, and just over the bridge in beautiful Killorglin. Making his return to the stage of the INEC, having last graced that very same stage at a tender young age performing with The Tara Little Stage School, Dave is enjoying the experience of working with KMS.

Having recently moved back to Killarney to work remotely, David spent the past few years in London where he played Richard in the London premiere of ‘My Land’s Shore’, and Mark Cohen in ‘Rent’ at the Bloomsbury Theatre.

Before his time in London, Dave was an active member of the Trinity Musical Theatre group, performing Perón in Evita and Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar.

Joining KMS was the perfect step for David as it has integrated him back into the Kerry way of life and his love of Musical theatre in equal measure.

Being part of any musical society is a great way of meeting people with similar interests and hobbies, and as much as we all know, there is a lot of time and commitment given to rehearsals, there is always time to socialize and get to know your fellow members too.

“Get involved, take that first step, audition, join a Musical Society or Theatre Group, once you’ve taken that first step the hardest part is done! It’s all a Song and Dance from there,” he said.

David plays the part of Che, the ever-present narrator guiding the audience through the events of Eva Peron’s life.

“The role is a charismatic, passionate and yet hopeful narrative of her life providing insight, a perspective from the working lower class of the time, criticism at times, but also giving us the insight of the people and the love and reverence they had for Evita, their First Lady,” said PRO Orna Cleary O’Shea.

“The role of Che is extremely challenging vocally, being involved in almost every scene throughout the show, with the vocal range of an impressive rock tenor being required to play this part. David has excelled in this role and has us in awe at every rehearsal, audiences are in for a treat."

Fossa man new chair of Kerry Green Party

The Kerry Branch of the Green Party has elected Fossa native Diarmuid Griffin as its new chair following their Annual General Meeting held last Saturday at Scott’s Hotel.

The event provided an opportunity for members to reflect on the busy political landscape of 2024.

Newly elected chair Diarmuid Griffin said he is committed to protecting Kerry’s natural environment, which is integral to the local tourism industry.

“The environment of Kerry is worth protecting,” Griffin said. “As a proud Killarney man, I will continue to advocate for the safeguarding of our natural environment, on which our tourism industry depends. My priority as chair will be connecting champions of our natural world through community events, activities, and meetings. Over the next year, our focus will be on grassroots environmental stewardship.”

While Green politics faced national challenges, the Kerry Greens saw an increase in vote share, thanks to strong candidates and a dedicated local campaign. Despite the loss of hardworking Green ministers like Malcolm Noonan in the Dáil, he recently topped the poll in the agricultural panel for the Seanad elections. Noonan, who served as Minister for Nature, was a frequent visitor to Kerry and Killarney, increasing government investment in environmental initiatives in the region.

In addition to Griffin’s election, Anne-Marie Fuller was appointed as Secretary, while Paul Bowler took on the role of Treasurer.

Keynote speakers lined up for sustainability event

A number of high-profile guest speakers have been confirmed for what will be a hugely informative public meeting aimed at highlighting a practical path to a sustainable future for businesses and ways they can reduce commercial energy costs and waste.

The event, organised by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and strongly supported by Fáilte Ireland and Kerry County Council, will take place in the Killarney Plaza Hotel on Thursday, February 27 at 6.00pm.

Keynote speakers at the event will include Mike Stack, chief executive of progressive Killarney company Tricel and Chair of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce Sustainability Group; Ann Courtney, Head of Sustainability with Golf Ireland; and Martin Bealin, Global Village Consultants, who is a vastly experienced mentor on sustainability issues in hospitality and tourism.

Other guest speakers scheduled to participate include Cormac McCarthy, Acting Programme Manager in Business Supports with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland; Evelyn Moynihan,

CEO, Kilkenny Group; and Aidan McDonnell, CEO, Acutrace.

The event will showcase the progress made and the advantages available for companies willing to boost their green credentials.

As Killarney continues to develop as a vibrant tourist destination, businesses can take important steps towards reducing their environmental impact and, the meeting will hear, one of the most effective ways to do this is by consulting with a monitoring company to advise on reducing energy consumption and waste.

It can help local businesses to pinpoint areas where energy is being wasted and, in the process, uncover opportunities for cost-saving measures that can directly benefit the bottom line.

From identifying inefficiencies in heating systems to optimising lighting and machinery use, an audit provides a tailored, actionable plan that can lead to significant reductions in energy bills and reducing a company’s carbon footprint.

The meeting is open to everybody and businesses have been encouraged to attend to learn how they can take advantage of the exciting options available.

Kerry Diocese commissions 25 new pastoral leaders

Bishop Ray Browne commissioned 25 people as pastoral leaders in St Mary’s Cathedral, on Sunday.

This new ministry in the Diocese of Kerry involves coordinating and supporting pastoral ministry in parishes and pastoral areas.

The volunteer pastoral leaders will work with clergy, parish secretaries, and existing parish ministers. Their commission will last for three years.

The newly commissioned leaders completed a two-year formation programme accredited by Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, developing both their faith and relevant skills.

They may undertake roles traditionally held by priests, such as bringing communion to the housebound or supporting schools in sacramental preparation.

“The future Church will be different, not better or worse!” said Bishop Browne.

Killarney schools to promote a smartphone-free childhood

Minister for Children, Disability and Equality and Kerry TD Norma Foley has welcomed the move by 21 Killarney schools to promote a smartphone-free childhood.

These schools in the Killarney region are working with parents and encouraging them to come together and support the policy of a smartphone-free childhood experience.

This is in line with the Keeping Childhood Smartphone Free policy launched by Minister Foley during her term as Minister for Education.

Minister Foley visited St Oliver’s National School to officially launch the policy with all the schools taking part.

She said: “I was absolutely thrilled to

meet with students and principals from the 21 schools. It’s a phenomenal show of leadership by these schools as they work together to keep childhood smartphone-free. Schools, parents’ associations and students around the country have been coming together to adopt similar smartphone free polices to improve children’s socialisation and to reduce the risks of online bullying and exposure to inappropriate material online. “

The ‘Keeping Childhood Smartphone

Free’ policy has also been backed by Vodafone, Three, Eir, Tesco Mobile, Virgin Media, and An Post Mobile - companies with a combined 95% market share in the Irish phone market.

Minister Foley added: “There is growing evidence students who are stuck on their smartphones and their social media accounts for long periods of time experience less physical activity, poorer sleep, and less concentration in class. Delaying the purchase of a smartphone for children is very important for young people and their mental health wellbeing. I want to express my thanks to everyone involved in this smartphone-free policy in these 21 Killarney schools.”

Public consultation on town centre revival scheme

A successful public consultation on the Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme (THRIVE) was held at the ANAM Cultural Centre in Killarney.

The event focused on Strand 1 of the scheme, which will develop Integrated Urban Strategies for the adaptive reuse of publicly owned heritage buildings.

The Killarney THRIVE project, along with a similar project in Tralee, is one of two in Kerry selected for the programme. Both projects are co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union.

The public engagement event in Killarney saw a wide range of stakeholders and members of the public participate in discussions and debates, contributing to the development of the Integrated Urban Strategies.

Kerry County Council and consultants will consider all feedback received and submissions can be made by emailing townregenerationunit@kerrycoco.ie

or by post to: Town Regeneration Unit, Ashe Hall, Tralee, Co. Kerry.

ABOUT THE SCHEME

The Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme aims to revitalise town centres by focusing on the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings, defined as structures with unique architectural, historical, archaeological, or artistic qualities, or those with cultural and economic significance. The THRIVE programme is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Southern, Eastern and Midland Regional Programme 2021-2027. Aras Phádraig redevelopment meeting

The next phase in the Aras Phádraig site redevelopment could be known by the end of this month. Killarney Municipal District elected members are expected to meet at the town hall on February 21 to discuss Planning and Development Regulations 2001.

KWOTE meeting scheduled

Killarney Women's Organisation for Training and Empowerment will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, February 19, at 2pm in the Parish Centre, located next to the Church of the Resurrection.

Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill has urged Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien to approve a new bus route serving Beaufort, Churchtown, St. Mary’s of the Angels, Meanus, and Killorglin.

Cahill said demand for the service is high and that it would improve transport access for residents while benefiting the

local economy and reducing traffic. He has submitted a Parliamentary Question on the issue and is awaiting a response. He stated the need for better public transport in rural Kerry and said he will push to ensure these areas are not overlooked. The event was held in memory of the club’s great supporter, Vincent Lacke, who passed away last October.

The tournament served as a tribute to Vincent’s passion and dedication to the Kerry Stars, and brought together men's and women's teams from across Kerry, Tipperary, and Cork for a day of competition.

Vincent’s sister, Mary Lyne, was present to award the winning teams their trophies and medals.

The Kerry Stars club expressed thanks to referees Ann-Marie Murphy and Jordan O'Rourke, as well as Suzanne Scully and Derry Fleming of the Order of Malta, for their invaluable contributions.

The club also acknowledged the support of the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre staff, and the parents and friends who provided food and refreshments. Visiting teams from Mallow, Tipperary, and Cope Leeds complimented the Kerry Stars on the welcoming atmosphere and high level of competition.

Kerry Stars Soccer Head Coaches Kathleen Fitzgerald and Patrick Fuller expressed their pride in the athletes' performances.

"Vincent would have been so proud of every single one of you," they said. "We are so proud of our wonderful athletes, and it’s clear to see the legacy of Vincent continues to inspire us all.”

Man drives Mini into Munich demonstration

On Thursday, a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker drove a Mini Cooper into a crowd during a trade union demonstration in Munich, Germany.

At the time of writing, reports suggest at least 28 people were injured, including children. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on Seidlstrasse, where approximately a thousand members of the

Verdi trade union were rallying for better pay and conditions. The driver was known to authorities for previous drug and theft offenses. He had his asylum application rejected but was granted a toleration permit, allowing temporary stay due to obstacles to deportation. Authorities are investigating the incident as a suspected attack, German officials, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Bavarian Governor Markus Söder,

condemned the act and emphasised the need for stringent justice and potential policy changes. This attack comes just weeks after the Christmas market attack in Berlin, where a radicalised individual drove a stolen truck into a crowded holiday market, killing 12 and injuring dozens. The back-to-back incidents have reignited debates over Germany’s migration policies and the effectiveness of its counterterrorism measures.

New pay-related Jobseeker’s Benefit to launch in March away Home

The new Pay-Related Jobseeker’s Benefit will come into effect on March 31, 2025, following a year of preparation for its rollout.

It will be available to individuals who lose their jobs on or after this date, provided they have made sufficient Pay-Related Social Insurance (PRSI) contributions. The amount of benefit a person receives is directly linked to their previous earnings. Special conditions will apply if an individual was receiving another benefit, such as Maternity Benefit or Illness Benefit, when they became unemployed. Further details on these arrangements

will be announced soon.

For individuals with at least five years of paid PRSI contributions, weekly payments will be set at 60% of previous earnings, up to a maximum of €450 for the first three months. This will be reduced to 50% of previous earnings, up to a maximum of €300, for the following three months.

For those who have contributed PRSI for 2 to 5 years, the payment rate will be 50% of previous earnings, up to a maximum of €300 per week for six months. The minimum weekly payment will be €125.

Four

people escape burning apartment in Limerick

A fire broke out at a two-story apartment complex in Howley Court on Steamboat Quay, near the Clayton Hotel, around midday on Sunday, February 9.

Four people managed to escape the burning apartment without injury, but hundreds more residents were evacuated as a precaution. The family living in the affected apartment was treated for smoke inhalation, though no life-threatening injuries were reported.

Five firefighting units, along with Gardaí from Mulgrave Street and Rathkeale, responded to the scene. Firefighters from Limerick City and County courageously entered the building to assist residents in evacuating the apartment block.

Using a hydraulic platform, firefighters battled the flames for two gruelling hours before successfully extinguishing the fire.

Once the fire was under control, surrounding residents were allowed to return to their apartments, except for the occupants of the damaged unit.

Scientists monitor Asteroid 2024 YR4: Could it hit earth in 2032?

According to experts, the asteroid 2024 YR4 now has a 2.2% chance of hitting Earth in 2032, up from a previous estimate of 1.3%. While this remains an unlikely event, it raises interesting discussions about planetary defence and the potential impact.

The asteroid is reported to be between 40 and 90 metres in diameter, with the level of damage depending on where it would hit. The closest comparison is the Chelyabinsk meteorite from 2013, which was roughly 20 metres in diameter. That event damaged windows in 7,000 buildings, and around 1,000 people required medical treatment for injuries caused by flying glass and burst eardrums. If 2024 YR4 were to strike, its energy release would be equivalent to 500 atomic bombs—without the radiation. However, experts believe there is only a slim chance

of a catastrophic impact, as 71% of Earth's surface is covered by water, and even over land, urban areas are relatively sparse, making a direct hit on a populated area highly unlikely.

Many astrophysicists predict that 2024 YR4 would likely break apart in the atmosphere, exploding before reaching the ground. This shockwave could create winds exceeding 1,000 km/h, though they would last only a second or two.

Dr. Niall Smith emphasises that while this asteroid should be taken seriously, there are methods to prevent a potential collision. One possible strategy involves sending a spacecraft impactor to collide with the asteroid, altering its trajectory enough to ensure it misses Earth.

Scientists will continue to monitor 2024 YR4 closely, refining impact predictions and discussing possible deflection strategies to ensure Earth's safety.

Trump comments adds fire to delicate ceasefire

US President Donald Trump has announced that if all Israeli hostages are not released from Gaza by Saturday noon, he will end the current ceasefire. The release of hostages was planned to occur over a 42-day first phase of the deal.

The ceasefire, which went into effect on January 19, brought an end to over 15 months of fighting in Gaza. It also facilitated the release of five groups of hostages and resulted in hundreds of Palestinians being freed from Israeli custody.

In response to Trump's statement, Israel has stated it is preparing its military for any possible scenario. Meanwhile, negotiators are set to meet in Qatar in the coming days to discuss the implementation of the first phase of the truce and potential next steps, which have

yet to be fully outlined. Talks regarding a second phase were scheduled to begin on February 16, but Israel refused to send negotiators to Doha.

Experts have condemned Trump’s plan to displace the people of Gaza, stating that it violates international law and has sparked widespread criticism. Egypt has declared that the Arab world rejects Trump's proposal to remove Palestinians from Gaza and take control of the enclave.

Trump has suggested that Palestinians should not be allowed back into Gaza, claiming that "it’s not habitable." Additionally, the US President has threatened to halt aid to Jordan and Egypt if they refuse to accept displaced Palestinians under his controversial Gaza plan.

The situation remains tense as global leaders react to Trump's threats and the fate of the ceasefire remains uncertain.

Musk’s $97.4 billion offer for OpenAI rejected by Sam Altman

A group of business entities, including xAI, Baron Capital Group, and Emanuel Capital, all led by Elon Musk, have offered $97.4 billion (€94.5 billion) to purchase the nonprofit that controls OpenAI. Their goal is to prevent OpenAI from transitioning to a for-profit structure.

Sam Altman rejected the offer, posting on X (formerly Twitter), “No thank you, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.” Musk recently criticised the $500 billion OpenAI project mentioned by former President Donald Trump. Musk sued Altman and OpenAI execu-

tives in August last year, claiming they violated contractual agreements by prioritising profit over public benefit in AI development. In November, Musk requested a preliminary injunction from a US district judge to block OpenAI’s transition from a nonprofit to a for-profit entity.

In the lawsuit, Altman argued that OpenAI’s founders initially sought Musk’s funding for a nonprofit organisation aimed at developing AI for the benefit of humanity. However, Musk now claims OpenAI is shifting its focus to profit-driven goals.

OpenAI has justified its for-profit transition by stating that it requires significant

capital to continue developing advanced AI models. According to the Wall Street Journal, xAI could potentially merge with OpenAI following a deal, though Musk’s first offer was previously reported and declined.

Legal expert Jonathan Macey commented, “If OpenAI chooses to sell to someone else for a lower price, it raises concerns about protecting the interests of the nonprofit’s beneficiaries.”

As OpenAI moves toward a for-profit model, tensions between Musk and Altman continue to escalate, with legal battles and billion-dollar offers shaping the future of AI.

Classic and Vintage Club drives female involvement

Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club is encouraging female members to join the club and help with its ongoing success.

The club boasts a strong female presence, comprised of both long-time enthusiasts and newer members.

“Our female members are very important to us, keeping the club strong,” said a club chairman Tom Leslie. “They are the glue that keeps it together.”

A recent club gathering at their Lewis

Road location provided an opportunity to speak with several female members about their involvement.

Common motivations included childhood exposure to classic cars through family members, a pre-existing interest in vintage vehicles, and the desire to connect with the local community.

The Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club encourages anyone interested in joining to contact Tom at 087 2383809 or John at 087 6950113.

New legislation will require motorists to provide driver number when taking out motor insurance

From March 31 this year new rules will require all insured drivers to provide their driver number before cover can be confirmed.

This data forms part of the Road Traffic Acts 2023 and will assist Gardaí at the roadside and ultimately reduce uninsured driving in the state. Insurers and brokers will collect the data, which will be validated and verified before cover can be confirmed.

The data will be transferred to the Irish Motor Insurance Database (IMID)

This is an important development from a road safety perspective as the key aim of the IMID database is to remove uninsured drivers from Irish roads. An Garda

Síochána have access to the Irish Motor Insurance Database through their Mobility Devices, and can currently detect drivers operating without insurance on Irish roads.

Speaking about this development, An Garda Síochána Assistant Commissioner - Roads Policing and Community Engagement Paula Hilman said: “For Gardaí, having access to the Irish

Motor Insurance Database on their Garda Mobility Devices puts them in a stronger position to detect those breaking the law by driving without insurance. The additional feature of having a person’s Driver Number data available to Gardaí through the Irish Motor Insurance database will further strengthen our ability to keep road users safe. This new development underscores the considerable progress achieved when we improve the technology available to members of An Garda Síochána when we partner with stakeholders and share data.”

Your driver number can be found under section 4D on the plastic driving licences and in field 5 of the older paper licences.

My name is Peter Guban, and I am 17 years old. I am a fifthyear student at Killarney Community College, where my favourite subjects are biology and chemistry.

Outside of academics, I enjoy sports such as mountain biking and volleyball. Currently, I am doing my placement at the Killarney Advertiser as part of my Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP), and this week, I have been seeing first-hand all the work that goes into producing a local news magazine. I have had a chance to work closely with the team and have learned a lot about writing. To put my learnings in to practice, the Killarney Advertiser has given the opportunity to write about a topic that fascinates me, and I hope will interest you too. Given my love for science, it should come as no surprise that my article delves into a scientific field: nanotechnology.

So you are probably wondering what na-

Is nanotechnology the future?

notechnology is. It is an emerging branch of science and engineering that focuses on designing and manipulating materials at an incredibly small scale, less than 100 nanometers. To put this into perspective, a single strand of human hair is approximately 80,000 to 100,000 nanometers wide. This means that the technologies being developed in this field are microscopic, operating at scales nearly invisible to the naked eye.

Research and development in nanotechnology are being conducted worldwide. Some of the leading institutions in this field include the National Centre for Nanoscience and Technology in China, the National Institute for Nanotechnology in Canada, and the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme. These institutions, among many others, are exploring ways to advance and integrate nanotechnology across various industries.

One of the most exciting prospects of nanotechnology is the potential use of

Serenity Spa to host mid-term Skin

Wellness Workshop

The Rose Hotel's Serenity Spa will host a ‘Glow & Go Skin Wellness Workshop’ on February 20, from 10:30am to 12:30pm.

Held on the Rós Bui Terrace, the event is designed to help attendees refresh and rejuvenate for spring. The workshop begins with registration and a welcome reception featuring healthy juices, herbal teas, and canapés. Elemis Skin Expert Liza will lead an in-

teractive session on spring skincare routines, including a demonstration of Elemis’ limited-edition Black Cherry Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm. Michelle of New Body & Soul will also present a "Spring Reset" session focused on internal wellness and healthy habits. Attendance is limited to 20 people. nanobots in medicine. While nanobots are commonly depicted in science fiction movies, they are not yet being used on humans. However, medical researchers are currently conducting experiments on animals, particularly focusing on locating and eliminating cancer cells. Experts estimate that it may take another decade before nanobots see widespread use in the medical industry.

Nanobots function through four key processes: sensing, signalling, processing information, and exhibiting swarm behaviour to address threats. The potential applications of these microscopic machines are vast. They could revolutionise medical diagnostics, enabling scientists to study blood disorders at a microscopic level.

Additionally, nanobots could repair damaged tissues and cells, assist in drug delivery systems, and potentially eradicate cancer cells. The possibilities are seemingly endless.

Despite these promising advancements,

several challenges remain in the development and implementation of nanobots. One major hurdle is accessibility and cost. Initially, this technology is likely to be available only to a select few due to its high expense. Regulatory and ethical concerns also pose significant obstacles. Many people are understandably wary of the idea of tiny robots operating inside their bodies, raising concerns about privacy, safety, and potential unforeseen consequences. Furthermore, obtaining FDA approval for medical nanobots will be a complex and rigorous process, as stringent testing and validation will be required.

Even with the rapid progress of artificial intelligence and technological innovations, scaling nanotechnology for widespread use remains a daunting task. However, the potential benefits of these advancements could change the world as we know it. The ability to create technology so small that it is invisible to the human eye, even under a traditional school microscope, is a fascinating concept. Ultimately, the biggest challenge nanotechnology may face is human perception. Many people may resist the idea of having microscopic machines inside their bodies, no matter how beneficial they may be. Nevertheless, I believe that once the advantages become evident, society will gradually accept this groundbreaking technology. In due time, nanotechnology could mark one of the most significant achievements in the medical industry, paving the way for unprecedented advancements in healthcare and beyond.

Seniors Alert Scheme

The Seniors Alert Scheme provides funding for a free personal monitored alarm for people aged 65 and older and of limited means. The scheme is intended to support older people to live securely and independently in their homes.

Who is eligible for the scheme?

To be eligible for the Seniors Alert Scheme, you must be aged 65 or over and have limited means or resources.

You must also be any of the following:

• Living alone

• Living alone for significant periods of time during the day

• Living with someone who meets the criteria

• Caring for someone else in your household

You must live in the area covered by the registered group administering the funding and be able to benefit from the equipment being supplied. You also need to be willing to keep contact with the registered group.

Is there a cost involved?

All equipment and installation under the scheme is free. The alarm monitoring service is free for the first year. After the first year, you will be asked to pay the annual monitoring fee.

The annual monitoring fee will vary by service provider and the type of alarm or pendant supplied. The cost may be approximately €70 annually. Your local group can tell you about the cost in advance.

If there is no suitable landline available in your home and a mobile signal is used to connect to the equipment, you may have to pay a fee for mobile SIM rental. How does a personalised monitored alarm work

You can get a monitored personal alarm that is worn as a pendant or around your wrist like a watch. These alarms connect to a national helpline through a base unit installed in your home..

When you press the alarm button, it immediately rings the helpline, which is open 24 hours a day all year round. A helpline operator talks to you in your home and decides whether to alert a local volunteer responder or, if necessary, the emergency services.

If you no longer need it, the alarm must be returned as the scheme equipment remains the property of the registered group..

How do I get a Seniors Alert Scheme alarm?

Registered community or voluntary groups apply to Pobal on your behalf. Pobal does not accept applications from individuals. A family member or neighbour can apply on your behalf with the local group if you can’t apply yourself. If you

The registered community or voluntary group will:

• Assess your eligibility for the scheme and complete the application form with you

• Identify the equipment required and get quotations from suppliers

• Submit the application and supporting documentation to Pobal

You will be asked to confirm that you understand the purpose and use of the equipment and that you will be responsible for the annual monitoring fee after the first year.

How to apply?

If you feel you may be eligible for the Seniors Alert Scheme, you should contact the group registered to operate the scheme in your area. Pobal publishes a list of registered organisations on its website: www.pobal.ie

You can also contact your local Citizens Information Centre for details of your local group.

What groups can register as providers of the scheme?

Community, voluntary and not-for-profit organisations can apply to register with Pobal for the scheme. They must have a recognised structure and be able to show that they can manage the grants. They must also have a record of working with older people in the community.

A group will not be able to register if there is an existing group operating the scheme in the area.

Deirdre Vann Bourke, Kerry Citizens Information Manager, said:

For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1

Kerry v Dublin

Saturday 7.30pm

Austin Stack Park | Live on RTÉ

Gaelic football’s two great powerhouses will collide in Tralee on Saturday night although for one reason or another, neither will be quite as powerful as usual. Kerry are currently in experimentation mode with several fringe and new players seeing action in the absence of regular starters like Brian Ó Beaglaoich, Gavin White, Joe O’Connor, Dara Moynihan, Tony Brosnan and David Clifford. Damien Bourke, Seán O’Brien, Barry Dan O’Sullivan, Cillian Trant, and the Geaney brothers Dylan and Conor all started last weekend’s defeat to Donegal, and most of them are likely to retain their places on the team for the visit of Dublin on Saturday.

Established centre back Tadhg Morley is dealing with a groin injury that forced him off before half-time last time out last so Mike Breen will probably deputise if necessary.

Some Dr Crokes and Austin Stacks players could slot into the 26 following their extended break but Jack O’Connor may consider it too soon to fast track them into the starting 15.

As for Dublin, their lineups in the opening two rounds of the league were very

noticeably shorn of All-Star-calibre talent. With Brian Fenton, James McCarthy and Michael Fitzsimons all retired and Paul Mannion and Jack McCaffrey not making themselves available for selection this year, Dessie Farrell has been fielding a new-look team filled with young players who are yet to make a name for themselves.

Of course, experienced heads like Ciarán Kilkenny, Brian Howard and Niall Scully remain, complemented by newly established players like Seán Bugler and Colm Basquel. Stephen Cluxton will return later in the season and it won’t be long before Con O’Callaghan slots back in after his All-Ireland-winning heroics with his club, Cuala.

The Dubs, like Kerry, were victorious in their opening match (against Mayo) before losing to Donegal in Round 2.

The Boys in Blue haven’t won in Austin Stack Park since November of 1982 and Kerry fans will be hoping their team can extend that run and pick up two valuable points under the lights on Saturday. Elsewhere in Division 1 this weekend, Derry play Galway on Saturday at 5pm, Mayo host Tyrone on Sunday at 1.45pm, and Ulster rivals Donegal and Armagh meet in Ballybofey on Sunday at 3.45pm. All three of these matches will be live on TG4. Kerry v Dublin will be shown live on RTÉ.

McHugh and co. run the show

Kerry 1-18 | Donegal 0-23

A late Diarmuid O’Connor goal wasn’t enough to salvage a result for Kerry at home to Donegal on Saturday afternoon as Jack O’Connor’s men fell to a twopoint defeat in Killarney.

O’Connor’s palmed effort in the 61st minute, assisted by Paudie Clifford, gave the hosts a glimmer of hope as it cut the deficit to the minimum, but the Ulster side finished strongly with decisive scores by sub Jamie Brennan (two) and Conor O’Donnell.

Donegal were the better team throughout and a Man-of-the-Match performance by attack-minded half back Ryan McHugh – who scored 0-5 from playtypified their all-action game plan. To their credit, Kerry did their best to stick with Jim McGuinness’ team to the very end, but it will take a better display (and perhaps an injection of star quality and speed) if they are to pick up a respectable number of points in the coming weeks.

SLOW

The home team were slow out of the blocks and a lovely two-pointer by McHugh was quickly followed by singles by Conor O’Donnell and Shane O’Donnell to put Donegal four up inside eight minutes.

Three wides and a couple of poor turnovers didn’t help matters for Kerry, who eventually got off the mark in the 11th min-

ute when Dylan Geaney swung over a right-footed shot from a narrow angle. The crowd on the terrace burst into life when Donegal corner back Finbarr Roarty crossed over into Kerry’s half, leaving only two outfield teammates behind him, but the youngster corrected his error before he was spotted by the linesman.

A pair of frees by stand-in captain Seánie O’Shea and Conor Geaney cut the deficit to a single point but a fisted effort by Shane O’Donnell made it 0-3 to 0-5 midway through the first half. The Kingdom were on top in the midfield stakes with Shane Ryan finding his targets with impeccable accuracy, and this platform in the middle third led to a snapshot point for Barry Dan O’Sullivan and an equaliser by Dylan Geaney.

Donegal grabbed the initiative thereafter, however, outscoring their opponents by six points to two in the final 10 minutes of the period. A two-point free from Paddy McBrearty after Kerry incurred a 50-metre penalty for delaying a restart re-established the visitors’ lead, and they would lead from then until the final horn.

Nice points by Conor Geaney and Paudie Clifford brought Kerry’s total to 0-7 by half-time but Conor O’Donnell, McHugh, Eoghan Bán Gallagher and Oisín Gallen all scored for the visitors to take their tally to 0-11.

CONTROL

Three points on the bounce by Seánie O’Shea, Dylan Geaney and Diarmuid O’Connor had the Kerry fans in attendance rubbing their hands in anticipation of a fightback, but Donegal eased back into control, registering five of the next six points. The last two on this run came via the

energetic McHugh as Kerry struggled to cope with the opposition’s pace and fitness.

Four points in five minutes by Graham O’Sullivan, Cathal Ó Beaglaoich (with his first touch), Conor Geaney (free) and O’Shea (free) kept Donegal honest before midfielder Ciarán Thompson swung over consecutive scores to make it 0-15 to 0-19 with 11 minutes remaining. Paudie Clifford and Peadar Mogan exchanged points and then Clifford shrugged off the challenge of Roarty to slip in behind the stubborn Donegal backline and tee up the excellent O’Connor for a tap in at the back post.

This made it a one-point game with nine minutes to go but Kerry failed to push on and seize the initiative as points by substitute Jamie Brennan and the lively Conor O’Donnell left three between the teams with a couple of minutes on the clock. A two-pointer by O’Shea – Kerry’s only score from beyond the arc all day – once again hinted at a turnaround, but Brennan went straight up the other end and made sure of the result with a match-clinching kick.

New rules work well

Eamonn Fitzgerald was encouraged by the new version of Gaelic football on show at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday

Change occurs in all aspects of life and the inevitable has happened in the case of the New Rules in Gaelic football. It was necessary as the game has been a major turn-off for spectators in recent years. The obsession with retaining possession at all costs was strangling the entertainment and patrons voted with their feet. The GAA was forced into changing something.

Jim Gavin and his vastly experienced committee of high-profile managers came up with 49 changes to the rules to bring back the entertainment value to the game. In with the new and out with the old - quite a lot of the old, in fact.

I have given my viewpoint in recent weeks based on TV viewing. I welcomed the GAA initiative and saw the merit in some rule changes but was positively and constructively critical of many of them, especially in the case of implementing the new rules at club level. Last weekend provided the best opportunity to attend three live competitive games, all within 100 metres of each other on Lewis Road.

COLLEGES FINAL

First up was the final of the Corn Uí Mhuirí, where the gallant young St Brendan’s College team gave a great account of themselves before yielding to Mount-

hawk, the holders, 2-11 to 0-10 in a very well-attended game in Páirc na gCrócaigh. This final was played under the old rules.

It was full of youthful fervour, some great fielding, and splendid individual displays of class acts, but bedevilled by the unwelcome possession at all costs and the proliferation of endless handpassing, especially the pass-the-parcel game, making one wonder what was inside the parcel and who would be holding the hot potato when the referee blew the whistle.

On a brighter note, one was very impressed by Mounthawk’s three powerful players, the Austin Stacks’ duo of Ben Murphy and Daniel Kirby, and Tomás Kennedy from Strand Road. Also impressive was the delightful natural scoring forward Paddy Lane (0- 5). The diminutive Lane won’t be going to the Aussie Rules, but the other trio will be on the radar. If even one goes it will be a huge loss, just like Mark O’Connor from the past. How Kerry could have done with O’Connor. That drain of brilliant young players and much-needed midfielders of the future so badly needed by Kerry is an ongoing concern.

Joey McCarthy was the top scorer for The Sem with five points, but his penalty effort late in the game was well saved

by goalkeeper Ruairí Kennedy, denying the Killarney boys the goal they needed to put it up to Mounthawk. The Sem also spurned two other great opportunities for goals.

The Sem team will be very good next year, especially going on their Frewen Cup form and having more players up at the high end of the eligible age bracket. I ask the question: apart from possession-mania is there a need for such radical rules changes when both teams play with such fervour under the old rules?

CLASH OF GREEN AND GOLD

Kerry v Donegal was eagerly awaited. After all, McGuinness was one of the prime movers in stultifying the game, all too often having 15 men behind the ball. I recall so clearly the last time they played Kerry in the corresponding league game at the Fitzgerald Stadium (2022). It was the most boring game to watch. Kerry led all the way and even when Donegal were six points adrift, they still persisted in playing ultra defensive football with all 15 players defending and making no effort to score. Kerry won it easily by 1-13 to 0-7. Spectators on the Terrace all around me were bored to tears watching that clash of green and golds, prolonging the agony; certainly, there was no ecstasy.

On Saturday last Donegal won two valuable league points with that late flourish, even though I thought Donegal were much better than Kerry, a reality check for the Kerry management, even making allowances that Donegal have done much more than Kerry in the fitness stakes at this stage.

It was ironic considering Kerry’s smash and grab victory away to Derry on the previous Sunday when that unlikely finish of two Kerry goals surprised everyone.

What I liked about the Donegal game was the high scoring and the non-stop action, well refereed by Brendan Cawley from Kildare.

The 1v 1 throw-in is very welcome and so too are the new rules on kickouts. Most of them

where needed

now go out to midfield and beyond or the wings, creating opportunities for high fielding, a striking feature of the old game. Diarmuid O’Connor has the height and athleticism to reach those high balls and he does it well.

However, not only does he need to catch the high ones, but he needs to grip that ball tightly and not lose possession. I think of two great fielders of the high ball, Mick O’Connell and Séamus Moynihan. O’Connell was the master of the clouds

through the 50s, 60s and 70s. Moynihan was not a tall man, but he was a brilliant fielder for his size with a vice-like grip, often catching balls behind his head. Think of that tour de force versus his great personal friend Pádraic Joyce in that memorable All-Ireland win in 2000.

High fielding, especially i lár an ghoirt, is spectacular and very welcome. However, McGuinness has already shown how to get around it by punching the ball forward out of the loose hands. Hence the need for gripping that ball vice-like. Also, the long, high ball affords opportunities for bunching so that needs tweaking to prevent robbing Peter to pay Paul.

The new 40-meter arc is very welcome with the added bonus of securing a two-pointer and that orange flag. In such an evenly

matched game those two pointers will often decide the outcome. Kerry’s only two-pointer on Saturday last was the Seánie O’Shea effort. Mind you there were plenty of opportunities to do so even if the defenders on both sides circled the wagons successfully. Surely intercounty players should be well able to score from outside the 40m arc. Maybe that is a false assumption. Why do so few attempt it? I believe the main reason is the residue of over-reliance on statistics. Players are reluctant to shoot in case their conversion stats will be viewed negatively by management. The Kerry player who was best positioned to shoot from outside the arc against Donegal was goalkeeper Shane Ryan. I noted six occasions when he was unmarked just outside the new arc but he didn’t risk shooting. Why? He knows he is well capable of proving his worth as an outfield player with his club Rathmore. Is he under orders to pass to a fellow forward? Surely running upfield merely as a decoy is futile and then there is the scampering back if Donegal overturn the intended pass.

Overall, I enjoyed the game under new rules. There are other aspects that I will return to in the future. The club scene is underway for 2025, so I reserve my opinion on how they will work at local level.

KERRY LGFA WIN

Kerry LGFA had a comfortable 2-10 to 0-7 win over Kildare in The Park on Sunday with Síofra O’Shea 1-4 and Danielle O’Leary 1-3 in sparkling form while the defence was superbly marshalled by Kayleigh Cronin. No need for new rules in the ladies’ games. As always, the LGFA games are so attractive to watch and there is no need to change anything. When the game ended I waited as most of the spectators were in the stand and it was remarkable that almost everyone exiting, both young and not so young, deposited their litter in the black bins, as they should, but looking across to the terrace the place was littered mostly with disposable paper/plastic coffee cups and chip cartons from the previous day’s Kerry v Donegal game.

It was a mess when one considers the magnificent effort of the Killarney Coffee Cup initiative to rid Killarney of the scourge of the throwaway society destroying our natural environment.

KERRY VERSUS DUBLIN

Tomorrow night’s game versus Dublin under lights at Tralee will be a must-win game for Kerry. Kerry face big challenges in their remaining league games away to Tyrone on Sunday, February 23 and away to Mayo on March 1 in Castlebar, returning to Tralee for Round 6 against Armagh and ending the series away to Galway at Pearse Stadium, Salthill on March 23. Then it will be a short enough run into the championship.

GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS Comhgháirdeas ó chroí to Marie Geaney on her well-deserved Gradam an Uachtaráin Jarlath Burns. Sadly, Paddy Cullen, that brilliant Dublin goalkeeper of the Heffo era, passed away at the age of 80 after a long illness. The Grim Reaper came far too soon for that very promising 28-year-old Galway boxer John Cooney who suffered a brain haemorrhage in his fight at Belfast and later died in hospital after surgery. Still in Galway where Storm Eowyn claimed the life of Michael Coleman, the former Galway All-Ireland and threetime All-Star hurler. Coleman was a brilliant player and community volunteer in his local Abbeyknockmoy where he was involved in an accident clearing storm damage near his home. In-form Síofra fires Kerry to victory

NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIVISION 1

Kerry 2-10 | Kildare 0-7

FITZGERALD STADIUM

A goal in each half by Danielle O’Leary and Síofra O’Shea propelled Kerry to a solid if unspectacular victory over Division 1 newcomers Kildare on Sunday.

O’Leary finished with 1-3 and O’Shea had 1-5 as Mark Bourke’s side picked up their second consecutive league win against a decent team who had defeated Dublin in Round 2.

After a tight first half, Kerry led by three points (1-3 to 0-3) and it wasn’t until O’Shea was repositioned into the full forward line that the All-Ireland champions started joining the dots. When they

did they were just that bit too strong for Kildare, who will be targeting survival after doing so well to earn promotion from Division 2 in 2024.

The Lilywhites’ star forward Roisín Byrne was well marshalled by the Kerry defence, which in turn limited the visitors’ scoring output and allowed the Kingdom to gradually ease out of sight.

Full back Deirdre Kearney and midfielder Mary O’Connell impressed for the home team on the day.

Kerry now have a week off before returning to action with an away game against Tyrone on Sunday, February 23.

Free away day coach trips for Kerry FC fans

Kerry FC have announced that they will be putting on free buses to transport their supporters to away games for the duration of the 2025 season.

The measure has been warmly greeted by the club’s loyal fans who are looking forward to 18 away league matches in the League of Ireland First Division, which gets underway on Friday.

In a statement confirming the initiative, Kerry FC said they “understand the dedication it takes for our loyal supporters to travel to far-strung reaches of Ireland to roar on the Kingdom in action” and they hope “that by absorbing the cost of coach travel, fans will be able to enjoy an away day with friends and family for minimal expense”.

The coaches will depart Mounthawk Park on the day of the game, providing pick-ups along the bus route and dropoffs on return runs back home.

“We are thrilled to announce this new club-led initiative to our loyal, dedicated and passionate supporters,” Kerry FC CEO Billy Dennehy said. “I know we are living in a world where the cost of living is constantly on the rise, so we hope the free travel will be welcomed by a large number of the Mounthawk faithful. We look forward to seeing more and more green on the away terraces around the country, and I know you will all do your best to roar the team on to victory, both home and away, in 2025.”

The first free supporters’ bus will travel to St Colman’s Park for the opening away match against Cobh on Friday, February 21. Fans are required to book their place by filling out an online form which can be found on the club’s website and social channels.

Kerry get the new campaign up and running at home to Finn Harps this evening (Friday) at 7.45pm.

Crokes boss O’Shea steps down

After leading his side to glory in last year’s County League, Club Championship, County Championship and Munster Championship, Pat O’Shea has stepped down as Dr Crokes manager ahead of the 2025 season.

An All-Ireland winning manager with

Crokes and Kerry, O’Shea had returned to the role last season, a move which precipitated a remarkable and largely unexpected winning run that culminated with an All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Errigal Ciaran of Tyrone on January 11.

The reigning Kerry champions had not yet announced a replacement as this

publication went to print but it would be standard for the Lewis Road club to appoint a candidate from within their own ranks rather than making an outside hire. The charismatic O’Shea will be a hard act to follow but the job will still be seen as an attractive one given the talent currently at the team’s disposal.

Defensive masterclass seals vital victory for Scotts Lakers

MEN'S NATIONAL LEAGUE

Scotts Lakers 65 | Team NorthWest 60

Sometimes you learn more from losing than winning because you learn how to keep going.

Scotts Lakers made the long trip up the length of the country to ATU Donegal in Letterkenny doing so with the baggage of three defeats in a row on their backs. For long periods in this game it looked like things were going to conspire against them again and the cold streak would continue. But to their absolute credit they kept going and eventually ground out a win , their tenth of the season and another step up on the ladder to the playoffs.

It is official that the Lakers have the best defence in the league and it came up trumps again in the second half. They limited Team North West to just nine points in both the third and fourth quarter and that laid the foundation for the win. And while they have the tightest rearguard in the league , offence sometimes can be a struggle but they did enough at the right moments to carry the spoils here. Coach Manuel Suarez was happy to get the win but ideally would like a little more control. He described it as "a crazy end again" but found time to outline the positives. "It was great to have Darnell (Snyers) back in action after his injury while Mikah (Blackwell) and Eoin (Carroll) came up with some big plays ." He singled out Jack O Sullivan for special praise ." Jack did an

amazing defensive job on their best player ( Shakiel Bertrand) and on crashing the boards . And our second half defence was key to the win ." Another key factor in the win was the battle under the boards where the Lakers pulled down 49 . The aforementioned Jack O Sullivan and Eoin Carroll grabbed 26 between them, the exact total of Team North West . It was the Lakers who made the brighter start with Snyers showing no ill effects of his injury. He hit two early baskets while Abdul Oladipupo was exhibiting a big appetite for work. Shakiel Bertrand hit six early points, half his game total, and that kept the Donegal side in touch at 9-7. Snyers hit a big three and while Mikah Blackwell hadn't figured on the scoresheet he was being very creative , linking up with Eoin Carroll. Jack O Sullivan , Rui Saravia and Jamie O Sullivan were sprung from the bench to keep the intensity high and that helped push the Lakers 19-13 ahead. Snyers hit another three , followed by a breakaway basket and it looked like the Lakers were going to lord matters at 24-14 but Team NorthWest stepped up to the plate. A strong finish to the first quarter left them only four points in arrears with Tyler Mutemasango and Alberto Rodriguez picking up the slack. That spilled into the second quarter and with the Lakers gone cold, Luke Cassidy and Bertrand propelled their side into a 29-26 lead. Coach Suarez had seen enough and called a

timeout which was immediately followed by a Blackwell dunk which gave his side some temporary energy. Carroll and Snyers after a rest were reintroduced and alongside Blackwell and Jack O Sullivan they helped to narrow the gap to one, 36-35 , with the halftime cup of tea brewing. Darragh O'Callaghan came on to help the defensive effort but the half ended with Luke Cassidy landing two threes and making their tea taste better with a seven point lead, 42-35.

What was obvious at the onset of the third quarter was the surge in intensity in the Lakers defence but they had trouble converting at the other end. Bertrands final basket of the evening was the only score the Lakers conceded in six minutes and eventually the Lakers took the cue to take the lead. Blackwell was the main instigator with support from Mark Sheehan and when Jack O Sullivan netted with 2.24 to go in the quarter the Lakers now led 48-44. Team North West arose from their slumber though with Mutemasango and Rodriguez closing out the quarter with seven points and a 51-48 lead. The early stages of the fourth quarter were nip and tuck. Oladipupo levelled matters with a three

but Mutemasango replied. Carroll again took delivery of a sublime Blackwell pass to tie it up again but Mutemasango had a three point play to again hold sway. After a passage of missed chances Oladipupo netted which helped Carroll to put the Lakers ahead again. Shane Malone , for Team NorthWest, and Blackwell exchanged baskets to keep the Lakers noses in front but a curious call on Blackwell put Team NorthWest to the line and then possession. Rodriguez duly slotted the free throws but strong Lakers defence held them at bay with the resultant possession.

The final two minutes were edge of the seat stuff which started with a Snyers breakaway to again give the Lakers a one point advantage, 61-60. The game went left and right with no advance on the scoreboard until 22 seconds to go. Snyers initiated it with a steal and with Blackwell in tandem he found his teammate to give the Lakers a three point lead and 12 seconds on the clock. Team North West took a time out and tried a few things but the Lakers were not to be denied. Running up team fouls Team North West sent Snyers to the line and he got the insurance points and helped shorten the long journey home with a 65-60 win. Darnell Snyers was top scorer with 19 points, Mikah Blackwell had 16, Eoin Carroll 13, Abdul Oladipupo 10, Jack O Sullivan 5, Mark Sheehan 2, Rui Saravia, Jamie O Sullivan, Darragh O'Callaghan. For Team NorthWest Alberto Rodriguez had 21, Shakiel Bertrand 12, Luke Cassidy and Tyler Mutemasango 11 each. Next Friday is Valentines Night but there will be little room for sentiment as Scotts Lakers welcome the all conquering Limerick Celtics to the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. The Celtics have yet to taste defeat this season and will be an acid test for the Lakers. Tip off is at 7pm.

St Pauls host Galway Mystics aiming for third straight win

WOMEN'S SUPERLEAGUE

Utility Trust St Pauls v Galway Mystics

Saturday February 15th 1.15pm

Presentation Gym, Killarney

James Fleming will be hoping that the momentum generated by two recent wins will mount a charge for the end of the season playoffs.

They weren't just any old wins , they were hard fought victories over the 2024 National Cup champions Brunell and 2024 Superleague champions Killester. The manner of them , coming from ten points behind heading down the stretch , will have given the squad huge confidence and it is that feeling that will be looking to tap into as they reach the home straight. They still have testing away trips to Portlaoise Panthers and Waterford Wildcats as well as home assignments against Trinity Meteors and Fr Matthews . Firstly they take on the Galways Mystics in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre this Sunday, February 16th . It is a repeat of the mid November clash when it took a strong second half showing from St Pauls to carry the spoils on a 85-65 scoreline.

The Mystics have struggled for wins this season but they do possess a lot of quality in their ranks . There has been a change of guard in their head coach role with Kyle Walsh taking over at the start of the season from Paul O Brien. Walsh will be looking to the likes of Shannon Cunningham who has been prolific this season and the Donegal native has represented Ireland at international level. As has Kara McCleane where she is joined on court by her sister Ava. Isa-

bella Quinn and Lily Hynes can also be relied on for maximum effort.

The response to the narrow National Cup semi final defeat has been emphatic by St Pauls. It must be remembered that even in defeat they gave a wonderful account of themselves and they have carried that form into the league campaign. Captain Denise Dunlea has certainly led the way in example with a great response from the rest of the squad. Alex Wittinger works so hard for her team and has certainly been the centre of attention for opponents defence. Despite this she has pulled down more rebounds than anyone else and her points total is central to the team's effort. Gracen Kerr has had an outstanding 2025 so far while Mathilde Diop has shown there is more to her game than offensive effort.

Rheanne O'Shea has made a welcome return following injury and where would the team be without Lorraine Scanlons input . Siofra O Shea continues to show her commitment , juggling her GAA commitments while commitment is the one thing you can rely on Lynn Jones for. Meabh Barry is the ultimate team player and no successful squad can function without her likes.

With the games now coming thick and fast it's imperative that James Fleming has his side focussed for one game at a time. They will be looking to keep the pressure on those around them and a win over the Westerners is a must to keep their name in the playoff conversation . Tip off is at 3pm.

MUNSTER JUNIOR CUP LAST 16: Killarney Athletic 0 - 0 Pike Rovers AET. Pike win 4-2 on penalties. Our Senior A Team exited the Munster Junior Cup yesterday after a very entertaining battle against a good Pike team. After a disappointing performance in our last outing against Ringmahon Rangers in the FAI Junior Cup, the lads left it all out the pitch against Pike. Putting their bodies on the line, battling for every ball & duel, creating some good chances but unable to find the all-important goal. After a very tough, entertaining 90 mins & extra time, the score remained deadlocked & the game had to be decided by penalties, which Pike came out on the top. Best of luck to Pike in the next round. Thanks for all the fantastic support in Woodlawn yesterday. It was great to see our supporters come out in big numbers to cheer the lads on

FAI YOUTHS CUP LAST 16: Bridge

Utd 0-1 Killarney Athletic A.F.C. Brian O’Shea x 1. A tough battle today up in Sixmilebridge resulted in a 1-0 win for the youths as we progress to the 1/4 of the FAI Youths Cup. It was a grind until the final whistle and our fellas stood strong against everything that the talented Clare outfit threw at them. The first 10-15 minutes was frantic enough, as you’d expect, and Bridge were looking particularly dangerous from corner kicks with good deliveries to the back post. We grew into the game and took the lead, from what proved to be the match winner, when Brian O’Shea got on the end of a ball over the defender’s head to finish to the net. We enjoyed our best spell of the game from the goal up to halftime and were looking the more likely team to score. Bridge came out for the second half on the front foot and pinned our guys back for the majority of the half. Today was a day for good concentration and plenty of heart. Our squad showed that in spades. For all Bridges possession, they had very few clear-cut chances bar when Caolan came out bravely towards the end to smother a chance. We had one or two good efforts late in the half to extend our lead. Great scenes greeted the final whistle and some tired bodies. Very proud of all the lads today, tough wins on the road like today really galvanize a team. Thanks to Bridge for a sporting game and their generous hospitality afterwards. We wish them well for the rest of the season. A big couple of weeks for the lads in store as we play Pike Rovers away next Sunday at 2pm in the 1/4 of the Munster Youths Cup. The weekend after we are away to Castleknock Celtic in the 1/4 of the FAI Youths Cup. Exciting times BOYS U13A: Killarney Athletic A -1 Castleisland A-1. The boys had a very

tough game against a very strong Castleisland team today at Woodlawn. The lads went down 1-0 at half to a perfect free kick from just outside the box. In the second half the boys came out fighting and played with real guts and determination. They got their well-deserved equaliser from a Caelyn Prendergast from a lovely free kick from Rory Moynihan. The boys were the better team in the second half and could have won it on a couple of occasions but was thwarted by the Castleisland keeper. Ewan Marshall made a key save at the end of the game to earn the draw for the boys. Our defence was very strong against a potent Castleisland attack as they always posed a goal scoring threat. Man of the match for Athletic was Dima who was stupendous at the back for Athletic. Well done lads on a tough earned draw today! They should be very proud of themselves.

Kilcummin GAA

EAST KERRY SUPER LEAGUE: Kilcummin were defeated in their second round East Kerry Super League on Sunday when Glenflesk proved too hot in front of goals winning out 5-15 to 2-16 in a high scoring and very entertaining game played at Glenflesk. For the second week in a row James Foley’s side had a number of players in their debut season making their way and he will be delighted with their battling spirit. Kilcummin opened brightly and early points by Paul O’Shea and Matt Keane (2) saw them enjoy a brief lead in the game ahead of a 7th minute Glenflesk goal. By the end of opening quarter, the visitors still held an 0-6 to 1-1 advantage but buoyed by some midfield possession Glenflesk through Jeff O’Donoghue finished the half strong with a number of fine points before back-to-back goals giving them a commanding 3-7 to 0-9 lead at the break. Cian Foley struck early for a goal minutes into the second half after a fantastic driving run by Chris O’Leary, but it proved only brief respite as Glenflesk were to find the net twice in the following few minutes to stretch the lead to 13 points at one point. However, with Matt Keane in particular carrying the fight throughout Kilcummin would hit the next 1-4 unanswered with a Jack Fogarty point particularly impressive while Keane used all his experience to dispatch a penalty. Brendan Kealy was called on to make two vital saves ahead a penalty miss for Glenflesk as the lead was pegged back to six points. Glenflesk with a greater flurry of late scores took the win despite an excellent 1-12 tally from Matt Keane which included a penalty, a 45, a number of top quality frees as well as from play. The game was expertly officiated by Fossa’s Padraig O’Sullivan who was called upon only once to move the ball 50M as players and supporters get a better handle on the new FRC rules. Next up for Kilcummin is the visit of Dr. Crokes which is down for next weekend.
