PAGE SIX €1m to help alleviate town’s traffic issues

Funding of €1m announced for Killarney this week will soon improve the town’s dire traffic congestion issues before the 2019 Summer season kicks in.

On Monday, the Fine Gael TD and Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, announced funding of €1m for Killarney town for smarter travel initiatives, including an extensive network of new dedicated cycle lanes in and around the town, and improved traffic management works to alleviate congestion.

This major funding comes under the Government’s Project Ireland 2040 initiative via The Urban Regeneration and Development fund (URDF) through Minister Eoghan Murphy.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser on Monday, Minister Griffin said he hopes the works, which he says are ‘shovel ready’, will begin in January and finish before the Summer season begins. He also revealed that a further €330,000 will be provided for the works from Kerry County Council - bringing the total amount to €1.3m.

“It’s as much for the people of Killarney as it is for the tourists,” Minister Griffin said. “It’s very positive news.

“What this plan will entail is the continuation of the cycle lanes that we see on Muckross Road and bring them all the way up to Mission Road towards the Cathedral linking up with the Demense and other parts of the town, linking Ross Road and Flesk Bridge for example.

“The €1m will be complimented by €330,000 from Kerry County Council bringing the total amount to €1.3m, which is substantial.

“Works are shovel ready and we hope to begin in the New Year, in advance of the 2019 season.”

Killarney Chamber President Paul O’Neill said that the Chamber welcomes the news.

The Chamber, he explained, has been consistently highlighting the growing problem of traffic congestion in the Killarney area and the impact it is having on the Killarney brand.

“The ‘TEIR One’ Report, commissioned by the Chamber, found that congestion is a major concern for visitors and is impacting on the visitor experience,” he said.

“The Chamber has, in recent months, campaigned for the inclusion of Killarney projects in the Government’s

Urban Regeneration and Development Fund and we welcome the allocation of €1.1 million in funding.

“This is an important first step in tackling the congestion problem and will allow a number of important short-term projects to progress.”

He added that the Chamber will continue to campaign for the infrastructural improvements that are urgently needed if Killarney is to achieve its potential to grow visitor numbers by 30 percent by 2025.

Minister Griffin added that there is also provision for funding to progress the Áras Phadraig Masterplan.

“Details of this specific amount will be made clearer in the near future, and will be in addition to the amounts announced on Monday,” he said.

Late Late Toy Show “a dream come true” for Killarney boy

BY MICHELLE CREAN It’s probably one of the most watched TV programmes of the year – and one local boy is set to appear tonight (Friday) - on the Late Late Toy Show.

11-year-old Micheal O’Brien, who is visually impaired, is excited that he will be part of a seven minute book review segment on the hit RTE One show.

The youngster, son of Michael and Noreen from Woodside, has dreamed of being on the show since he was in Junior Infants – and said this week that “it’s a dream come true”.

He told the Killarney Advertiser that he isn’t nervous but “was gobsmacked” when he got the call asking him to appear alongside presenter Ryan Tubridy.

Staff at St Oliver’s School, where Michael is a fourth class pupil, applied for the youngster to take part in what is the biggest Irish television show of the year.

Michael, with the help of teacher Shirley McGough and Special Needs Assistant (SNA) Olive Horgan, sent a letter with Ryan’s favourite Jelly Babies sweets inside.

Then they sent a video of Michael, and after an interview in Dublin recently, Michael got the call every child dreams of.

“I was gobsmacked,” Michael told the Killarney Advertiser.

“I had put sweets in the letter – but it wasn’t a bribe. I won’t be nervous. My outfit is top secret and it’ll put Ryan Tubridy to shame!”

Michael read a number of popular books through braille – but they won’t be revealed until tonight’s show. Tune in to the show tonight at 9.30pm on RTE One.

Former Sem student among 3,000 new Irish citizens

Nasir returned to Killarney this week with his wife Samsam and children Mawaahib and Mohamed, and he officially became an Irish citizen at the ceremony at the INEC. “Before the ceremony, I visited St Brendan’s College where I met my old principal, Ed O’Neill,” Nasir said. “He recognised me and welcomed me. He was very proud of me and he was tell-

ing everyone that I was a former student here.

“Most of my teachers are retired but they still remain in my heart.”

As an Irish citizen Nasir is now hopeful that he will be able to bring his mother and siblings to Ireland.

“I have contact with my family at the moment and I know where they are now, but at any time they might have to leave their homes due to disease, hunger and drought,” he said. “The Islamist

armed group Al-Shabaab has threatened and abducted civilians, which has also forced many people to flee.”

The Irish Refugee Protection Programme Humanitarian Admission Programme 2 (IHAP) provides an opportunity to Irish citizens who have immediate eligible family members from the top 10 major source countries of refugees, to propose to the Minister for these family members to join them in Ireland. Somalia is one of these top 10 source countries.

A former St Brendan’s College student who fled war-torn Somalia as a teenager was among the 3,000 people to be conferred with Irish citizenship at a ceremony in the INEC this week.

Nasir Yasin, who arrived in Ireland in 2005, was just one of 3,000 people from 120 countries who became Irish citizens in Killarney on Monday. 586 of the candidates were originally from Poland, while 312 came from the UK. Romania, India and Nigeria completed the top five.

When he arrived in Ireland, Nasir was housed in Park Lodge, Killarney, while the government processed his application for asylum. During his time in the town, Nasir attended the Sem where he credits teacher Eoin O’Cara and Guidance Counsellor Tim Gleeson with helping him to learn English. He subsequently completed his Leaving Cert in 2007.

However, because he was an asylum seeker, Nasir was not allowed to advance to third level education. His classmates at St Brendan’s wrote a letter to the Department of Justice pleading for Nasir to be granted refugee status but to no avail. He spent five more years in direct provision in Wicklow and Dundalk before eventually being told in 2012 that he could remain in the country on humanitarian grounds.

The following year, Nasir signed up for what he describes as his “dream course”, Civil Engineering in DIT. He graduated in

Neighbours unveil bench in Amy’s memory The town of Killarney was united in grief this past February when brave local girl Amy O’Connor lost her battle with cancer, but her memory lives on in the hearts and minds of family and friends.

This was clear for all to see last Saturday when neighbours in Whitebridge Manor unveiled a new bench in her honour. Amy’s parents, Brendan and Triona, friends and residents gathered to mark the occasion while representatives from Dr Crokes, Killarney Celtic, St Paul’s Basketball Club and Killarney Valley Athletic Club were quick to acknowledge the popular local girl’s great love of, and talent for, sport.

Amy was a huge fan of the Dr Crokes senior football team and her bravery in the face of adversity was a major source of inspiration to the players on their march to All-Ireland glory in Croke Park last March.

In fact, so important was Amy to the team, captain Johnny Buckley called her up to the podium to lift the trophy by his side.

Residents Association Chairman Denis Murphy, Secretary Rachel Kavanagh and resident Dora Browne were heavily involved in the project, which was also supported by Spellman’s Sawmills, Darcy Engineering and town foreman Noel O’Leary.

TOWNTALK Killarney company plan fundraiser for Liverpool supporter Seán Cox

BY ADAM MOYNIHAN A Killarney electrical company will show their support for fellow tradesman Seán Cox by raising funds at a charity event next Friday, December 7. Seán will never fully recover following serious injuries sustained after an unprovoked attack outside Anfield in April, when attending a Liverpool game.

Prior to the tragic incident, Seán was a rep for Precision Cables who work closely with Killarney electrical outlet TradeKit. Owner Gerry O’Sullivan was the main driving force behind TradeKit’s efforts to help their stricken colleague but, sadly, Gerry passed away last month.

His son, Joe, has since taken the reins and he and his employees are determined to honour Gerry’s last wish to assist the Cox family in their time of need.

“This was something that my dad spent his last day planning,” Joe said. “We’re doing this for Seán but we’re also doing it because it’s what dad wanted.”

A coffee morning will take place at TradeKit in Ballycasheen next Friday and all are welcome to come along, have some cake and make a donation to the Support Seán campaign.

Cillian Murphy to share Junior Brother song on BBC Radio

BY ADAM MOYNIHAN Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy is set to show his appreciation for talented Killarney singer-songwriter Junior Brother by playing one of his songs on BBC Radio.

Acclaimed actor Murphy will take over BBC Radio 6 on Sunday, December 23, to play three hours of his favourite music. The Cork man, who is famous for his roles in ‘28 Days Later’, ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Wind That Shakes the Barley’, will share Junior Brother’s hit single ‘Hungover at Mass’, potentially introducing the Kilcummin native’s music to a brand new UK audience.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Junior Brother, whose real name is Ronan Kealy, explained how the whole thing came about.

“The producer of the show emailed me and asked me to send over the song,” Ronan said. “He just said it was going to be considered for a programme on Irish music. So I sent it over, not really knowing what it was going to be used for.

“He got back to me then around a week later to say that it had been picked by Cillian Murphy for a show he was doing. He said Cillian was a big fan of it.”

Ronan is currently busy working on his new album ‘Pull the Right Rope’ and he plans to release the first single, ‘The Back of Her’, on December 9. He will also perform in Dingle this weekend as part of the Other Voices Music Trail. He will play Nelliefred’s at 5.15pm this Saturday, and on Sunday he will be at Tig Bhric at 12.45pm.

Lions Club plan Christmas appeal for needy families

A local group are this week appealing for the public’s generosity as they are planning a food appeal to help 80 local families this Christmas.

Killarney Lions Club members will be out collecting funds on the streets of Killarney on Friday, December 7. From the money collected they will then purchase food to make up food hampers.

Then, on Saturday December 15, the Christmas hampers will be delivered to the families in Killarney.

“Over the past 40 years people of Killarney have donated money to the Killar-

ney Lions Club Food Appeal and 1000s of Christmas hampers have been delivered to needy Killarney families,” Liam Kealy, from Killarney Lions Club, said.

“The funds collected go to local charity needs. This time of the year is not an easy time for some in our community, we ask that you give as generously as you can. We will make sure on your behalf that those in need in and around Killarney will have a better Christmas thanks to your kindness and support.”

He added that the Lions Club wish you and your family a very happy and peaceful Christmas.

St Oliver’s National School’s Night at the Dogs - may have led to an angry protest - but Principal Rory Darcy has described the event as being “a great success”.

The school’s decision to bring young pupils to Tralee Greyhound Stadium on Friday night was criticised by one unhappy parent, who expressed concerns around animal safety and exposing children to gambling. A protest was subsequently staged outside the stadium, but, speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Rory said the majority of parents had no issues with the fundraiser.

“The whole point of the event was to raise much needed funds for the school and, in that regard, it was a great success,” he said. “We haven’t got the final total in just yet, but it was very well supported by local businesses through ads and through sponsorship of the races.

“On the night itself, there was a huge crowd of people and there was a great buzz around the place. The sterling work done by the Parents’ Association here in preparing everything involved with the night was just fantastic. They deserve huge credit and thanks from us.”

While he disagrees with their sentiments, Mr Darcy was quick to acknowledge the protestors’ right to voice their concerns.

“Thank God we live in a country where people have the right to protest,” he said.

“While you don’t necessarily have to agree with what people are protesting about, you certainly have to respect their right to do so. The people involved felt very passionately about it I’m sure, but it was a very small number of people.”

Minister refuses to comment on wife’s citizenship ceremony

I, like many others, welcome the diversity that has come about The second large scale, simple but solemn Citizenship Ceremony took place at the INEC this week, when 3,000 people were conferred with Irish citizenship.

The previous one here was in May, when again 3,000 people were conferred.

Some 120 countries, including a growing number of British people, have become Irish citizens. Among those who took an oath of allegiance to the Irish State, was the English born wife of Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe.

Mr Donohoe gave the address at the conferring ceremony at the second of the three ceremonies which saw his wife Justine Davey sworn in.

Neither he or his wife wanted to give a comment to the press, they said, stating it was private. I found this a bit strange, if not arrogant, on the part of the Minister, especially since the official accompanying him made it quite clear to me she would prefer me not to report it. I refused. I am afraid I went to a school and I understand my profession as one in which extreme deference to authority was regarded as an affliction! I gave it the top line and it was carried.

Perhaps if there was some pressing personal reason I would have held back. I asked the Minister and his wife “was the decision to become a citizen due to Brexit”. They said “no comment”.

People whose backgrounds include the Congo, Brazil and Surrey England and Lithuania, spoke openly and joyously to me. I was going to report the wonderful fact that a senior government Minister officiated at the ceremony in which his wife was conferred with citizenship.

That aside, there are huge congratulations due to the friendly staff of our own Department of Justice in Killarney, who organised the whole thing. It seemed flawless and for some reason it seemed more emotional for the participants than the previous.

The beleaguered rural motorist!

Public lighting for Cahernane Meadows At the November 2018 monthly meeting of Killarney Municipal Area, Councillor Michael Gleeson asked: “That Kerry County Council would please provide an update on its review of public lighting within Cahernane Meadows, Killarney, particularly along the entrance road which presents as being inadequately lighted?”

Kerry County Council replied that it will prepare an estimate to upgrade the public lighting along the entrance to this estate and revert to Councillor Gleeson. This proposed upgrade is suitable for funding by means of Councillor Specific Municipal District Operations Fund 2018.

Councillor Gleeson stated that the residents have expressed concern for their safety along this inadequately lighted section of road. He committed to allocating monies for the upgrade and hopes it can be done as soon as possible.

Lucky punter scoop €8,250 for €0.25 wager A Kerry local’s Friday evening turned into a memorable and profitable one when their €0.25 bet overcame massive odds to land a remarkable amount of cash. The punter, who wishes to remain anonymous, placed the tiny bet in a BoyleSports shop in the Kingdom for Friday evening’s EuroMillions Main draw. Choosing the four numbers 5, 8, 26 and 30 to land at massive odds of 33,000/1, they waited nervously to see if they would be revealed. When all four numbers rolled out it ensured a €8,250.25 hand-out to the customer for their minuscule investment.

“We are absolutely thrilled to see our Kerry customer land €8,250 for the loose change stake of just €0.25. We are sure they will put their winnings to great use and hope it makes for an extra special Christmas,” Aoife Heffron, spokesperson for BoyleSports said.

Killarney Library Winter reading

For November and December, Killarney Library is running the Winter Family Reading Time initiative whereby children/adults agree to spend time reading together each week. This is an initiative of the national Right to Read campaign and as part of this national initiative, Killarney Library will hold a special storytime for children on tomorrow (Saturday) and Saturday, December 8 at 10.30am. Free admission.

BY ANNE LUCEY There have been protests in France over rising petrol and diesel prices at the pumps – with the carbon fuel tax by President Emmanuel Macron the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Elitist Macron is simply not liked. Working people have had enough, and the fuel tax is a lightning rod for the protests which included a guillotine hauled to the gates of the Élysée Palace in echo of the French Revolution!

The yellow vests, as those protesting are called, are a motley crew. I read the Guardian report and the Paris protest last Saturday included teachers, farmers, retired and the unemployed, the young and the old, and they have no particular structure. However they are mainly rural dwellers - in that they come from outside Paris.

The French Revolution had such a motley start. Looking back it is not easy to point to any one incident that sparked it, or even any central organisation.

My daughter lives in France and she says people have been quite scared there with the highways taken over, dozens injured and one or two killed.

Motorists in France do not pay car tax. Their fuel had actually been subvented under former President Holland and now the subventions removed and then hiked for climate change reasons there.

This is unlike the beleaguered Irish motorist, a term that has been going around in my own mind for some time. The beleaguered rural Irish motorist is being driven at again and again amid a pretence that cars were some kind of luxury, especially in places devoid of public transport, which is everywhere outside Dublin and Cork city.

While we are at it, we need a new definition the word “rural”, I define rural as towns where local authorities have given planning permission for out of town shopping centres, forcing people to drive to shops.

Killarney is a rural town for instance, because along with an out of town shopping park, it has no hospital or emergency medical services for the general public. Everyone has to have a car in Killarney to drive to Tralee or Cork to access medical, psychiatric and Government services. When they go to University Hospital Kerry to get treatment or visit a loved one, they will be hit again with parking charges of €12 a day. In other words, to paraphrase Marie Antoinette, cars are no longer cake, they are the bread of ordinary life in rural Ireland.

Not just fuel prices here is it? The Government has a slice out of everything from the once off VRT in the car purchase, to the annual car tax, ridiculous insurance premiums which this State is doing nothing to tackle, and then the take on fuel.

And the local authority here, astonishingly, wants to hit the hard pressed motorist harder again with parking fines and parking fees, it seems, taking another cut at the motorist!

The “income generated from targeted car parking

enforcement” (you couldn’t make such a phrase up) across Kerry this year is to be €3.1m we were told at the November budget meeting. Compare this to County Cork, the biggest county in Ireland. Cork County Council expects to earn a total of €1.44m from parking charges and fines in towns from Cobh to Macroom to Kinsale, their spokesperson told me.

I am waiting for the breakdown but you can bet your bottom dollar the Kerry wide parking income for 2019 will come mainly from the streets and car parks in Killarney, followed by Tralee. The last figures from 2015, when €1.8 million was generated in Kerry, saw Killarney alone contribute almost half the total figure.

Killarney people already pay higher street parking than people visiting Tralee. Our tourists of course are part of the income. That the hard pressed Killarney shopper or visitor already under pressure to find a parking space is being targeted for fines i.e. enforcement smacks to me of utter cynicism.

And on a separate though related note, I was around town on Black Friday in the afternoon when there wasn’t a black crow in the shops, and the ice rink was being constructed in the New Street car park. Even less parking than usual, in other words. Far fewer shoppers than you would expect, shop assistants told me.

At the same time, the designated loading bays were practically empty. Can there not be some arrangement some new by-law where loading bays are only loading bays for restricted periods, given the dearth of parking in Killarney? I hate to see pressurised motorists, pressed for space, paying a fortune for the car which is a necessary evil in rural Ireland, getting tickets for parking for short periods in loading bays given the lack of parking space and especially on days when the town is empty.

The state in the country these days is unduly active and unduly heavy handed in enforcement when it comes to collecting money from the squeezed lower paid civil servant and private sector worker, i.e. the middle - whether it is fuel taxes or property taxes or parking fines or rates, it seems to me.

I could suggest one relief for the hard pressed motorist, and one that wouldn’t take too long to implement and not only help the council budget but would lead to a reduction in carbon emissions: the politicians and public servants who stand over the high charges on motorists, and the targeting of motorists, nationally and locally, are themselves entitled to and most likely availing of huge mileage rates.

All these generous mileage rates are tax free. No one else, no other car driver, gets such a break or anything like it. No other sector.

Put the generous mileage and motoring allowances the politicians and public servants avail of on the table and into the kitty and let these be part of the €3.1m target that would soften a few coughs. And who knows there might even be left over cake for the hard pressed motorist!

Christmas parade draws record crowds There was a magical atmosphere in Killarney town on Saturday evening as record crowds enjoyed the first Christmas parade of the season.

Streets were lined with thousands of excited visitors of all ages and from all over, as the Magic Parade, which kick-started an exciting month of Christmas in Killarney events, made its way around the streets.

And according Christmas in Killarney Chairperson Kate O’Leary, this year’s event was the biggest to date.

The wonderful annual show has become a firm favourite with kids of all ages and huge crowds flocked to see the Christmas lights turned on, catch a glimpse

of Santa and his elves, and a whole host of fun new characters.

“We seem to say it every year, but this year’s parade was the biggest yet,” Kate said. “We had a lot of new characters and the crowds were unbelievable. It was incredible.”

Santa’s Cottage will be opening this weekend from 1-6pm in Old Market Lane and will remain open Saturdays and Sundays in the run-up to Christmas, Dine in Killarney started last night (Thursday) 0and will run again next Thursday night, and the Christmas in Killarney Concert will take place in the INEC on Thurs-

day, December 13. Further parades will be held this coming Saturday, and every Saturday at 6pm, right up until Christmas.

“The feedback has been super and we’re ready to rock and roll again this Saturday night,” Kate added.

“Hopefully the weather will hold off for us. We tend to get really good crowds for these smaller parades as well.”

The Christmas in Killarney team are looking for volunteers to act as stewards at the upcoming parades. If you can spare 45 minutes on a Saturday from 5.45pm to 6.30pm, please contact Kate on 087 2446131.

Olympic heroes reveal secrets to sporting success Killarney’s five Olympians told their own unique stories at an innovative public talk ‘Stragegies for Life Performance’ attended by over 200, in the Great Southern Hotel, on Monday last.

Elite athletes Gillian O’Sullivan, Paul Griffin, Cathal Moynihan, Seán Casey and Peter Maher gave all in attendance an incredible insight into what it takes to be a top-level sportsperson.

MC for the night was top strength and conditioning coach Joe O’Connor who recently helped his home county, Limerick, to a historic All-Ireland hurling title.

Joe has earned plaudits for his work with the Kerry footballers, the Waterford hurlers and the Clare hurlers and he also features prominently in the popular RTÉ show ‘Ireland’s Fittest Family’.

The event was hosted by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce in conjunction with AIB. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Chamber President Paul O’Neill said he was extremely pleased with how the evening went.

“It was an absolutely brilliant event,” he said. “It was extremely interesting and thought-provoking. I think we could have sat there and listened all night. It was great to honour our Olympic heroes as well. It was something very different to what we normally do, which was nice.”

And Paul added that there was a great cross-section in attendance.

“We had Chamber members, representatives from different sporting organisations, athletes and coaches.

There were plenty of teenagers and kids there as well and they got a lot of advice on how to get ahead and be successful. Feedback from everyone was overwhelmingly positive.”

Killarney On Ice is back from today (Friday) with a 600 square metre ice rink under a marquee at the Beech Road car park.

Located beside the tourist office and made of real ice, it’s been a hugely entertaining attraction in the town for many years.

And again this year it promises to be better than ever with plenty of fun until Sunday, January 6.

Schools, youth clubs and sports teams across the county are already using the group booking discount rate to plan a session on Kerry’s only festive ice rink.

And normal opening times can be extended during the day to accommodate school groups.

“Value for money is key, that’s why we have special family and group rates,” Tim O’ Donoghue, promoter of the rink, said.

“We also have loyalty cards, just ask at the box office.”

Helmets and skate aids are available for novice skaters with double-bladed skates to help young children.

Killarney volunteers receive Tidy Towns Gold Medal award All the months of hard work was worth it - as dedicated volunteers finally got their eight Gold Medal at the Mid-West and South West Regional Tidy Towns Awards on Thursday night last, (November 22).

Listowel was the location for the award ceremony as the town was named as the 2018 National Tidy Towns winner in September, while Killarney retained its Gold Medal status for the eighth consecutive year.

On the night, SuperValu Tidy Towns winners, including volunteers from Killarney Tidy Towns, were presented with their awards by Councillor Mike Kennelly, Kerry County Council and Dolores Farrell, SuperValu Community and Sponsorship Brand Manager, long time sponsors of the competition.

Known as the tourism capital of Ireland, Killarney has maintained its supremely high standards since winning the overall award in 2011, with an overall mark 334 this year - six points higher than in 2017.

“There was a huge effort by locals this year,” said Yvonne Quill, Chairperson of the Killarney Looking Good Committee. “It was extremely successful and the fact that Listowel are now the fourth town in Kerry to win the overall title is amazing.”

The Tidy Towns competition is now in its 60th year and in 2018 a record 883 towns and villages entered.

The awards are hosted by the Department of Rural and Community Affairs, sponsored by SuperValu and supported by Fáilte Ireland.

Top TV chef cooks up some tasty festive treats 140 guests had their senses truly tickled in Killarney on Friday evening as a top Irish celebrity chef served up a festive feast.

Popular TV chef, Rachel Allen, showcased her cooking talents with cookery demonstration in the five star Muckross Park Hotel and Spa. Afterwards guests tucked into a three-course dinner which the talented chef designed herself.

Students and staff at Killarney Community College are planning to hold their annual Christmas Craft Fair this Sunday, from 11am to 5pm.

It’s the third year of the fair which is fast becoming an important shopping date in the run up to Christmas. And with 50 professional vendors signed up with an array of goods including art, crafts, skincare products, with prices to suit every pocket, free parking and free admission - what’s not to love.

A group of TY students from St Brigid’s Secondary School are doing their bit for the Irish language by creating and managing an innovative ‘Gaeilge amháin’ Instagram account.

The page is aimed at students, parents of students or anyone interested in learning a cúpla focail online. In a short-time the girls have uploaded 90 posts and the @ Gaeilgeoiri_Airne account has garnered an impressive 560 followers.

“As this year is ‘Bliain na Gaeilge’, we thought it would be beneficial to change the outlook people have of the Irish language,” teacher Sinéad Collins said. “We’re trying to reach people in a fun way by using social media, which plays a pivotal role in the lives of young people today.

“The ‘Gaeilgeoirí’ in our name represents Irish speakers at all levels and ‘Áirne’ represents Cill Áirne, our hometown. We include something for everyone; there’s grammar, seanfhocail, vocab, jokes, local and national geography, exam tips and any school events - all as Gaeilge.”

All 24 students of 4 Red TY Class are involved in the initiative and Sinéad says the girls are really enjoying the project so far.

“I think the other classes are a bit envious of them!” she joked. “I think the fact that we’re linking Irish with social media is really stimulating interest.”

DRINK DRIVING AMENDMENTS IThe updated provisions of the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act 2018 are in effect since October 26th of this year.

Firstly it is important to note that this Act has not reduced or amended the drink driving limits. Instead this legislation has amended the penalties.

The new Provisions have increased the penalties for drivers detected with blood alcohol concentration between 50mg and 80mg from a €200 fine and three penalty points to three months disqualification from driving together with a €200 fine.

The penalties for learner, novice and professional drivers have not changed.

These penalties remain the same at three months disqualification from driving and a fine of €200 at the lower limits that already pertain to these specified drivers.

The lower limits of 20mg of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. for specified drivers applies to drivers

with learner permits or drivers who have held a driving licence for two years or less. The lower alcohol limits also apply to drivers of buses, lorries, trailers, work vehicles, taxis and other public service vehicle drivers.

Of particular note is that the lower limits also apply to those who do not have a valid driving licence or permit.

Therefore the lower limits would apply in the event of a lapsed licence which has not been renewed on time.

A kind-hearted little local girl has shown that she has a huge heart as she not only donated €100 - but also her birthday presents - to charity this week.

Little 6-year-old Mia Clifford, daughter of Annmarie Clifford and Soeran Kuhlmann, from Killarney town, selflessly gave her gifts to homeless charity Focus Ireland.

Mia and her mom turned up to the Great Southern Hotel on Monday, as the hotel ran a public toy appeal for Focus Ireland.

Mia, who celebrated her birthday in May, got so many presents that her mom asked her if she would like to give some to children who are less fortunate.

“She replied with ‘I will keep one of the presents and give the rest to the other kids’,” Annmarie told the Killarney Advertiser.

“She kept one of the presents and put the rest of the presents and the money into a box.”

Annmarie saw an advert in the Killarney Advertiser for the Focus Ireland appeal and mentioned it to her daughter.

Annmarie says she thinks it is very important for Mia to be a kind and caring person on the inside and understand the importance of giving to others.

“Mia felt good giving her presents away if it made other kids feel happy on Christmas morning.

Talented Parknasilla Resort and Spa employee Keara O’Brien has been named Graduate of the Year by the Irish Hospitality Institute. The Kenmare native, who was nominated by her college, IT Tralee, was honoured at the IHI’s annual Founders’ Banquet in Dublin last Thursday.

Earlier this year, Keara was named Student of the Year by the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) and she also picked up the IHF Kerry Academic Award for Highest Performing Student.

“Keara is a deserving winner,” said Mary Rose Stafford, Head of the School of Business, Computing and Humanities at Institute of Technology Tralee. “Her passion for the industry and her commitment to her own academic development whilst working full-time is to be commended.”

Kerry Hospice pays tribute to ‘courageous’ Patsy

Members of the Killarney Branch of Kerry Hospice this week paid tribute to courageous lady Patricia [Patsy] O’Carroll, who passed away, on Tuesday, November 6.

“It was with sadness that all at Killarney Branch of Kerry Hospice heard of the passing of popular local lady Patricia [Patsy] O’Carroll, RIP, better known as Patsy O’Keeffe,” Pat Doolan, Chairperson of the Killarney Branch said.

“Patsy had modelled at our “Models in Recovery” Fashion Show at the INEC as recently as late September.

“Although unwell and aware that her time was limited she insisted that she would like to take part.

“It was her wish to participate and, although a little apprehensive for her wellbeing, we respected her wish. I wonder how many of us in similar circumstances would have been as motivated as Patsy.

A courageous lady indeed.”

As a consequence of her deciding to take part she brought along a big following with her and contributed greatly to the success of the show, he added.

“We hope that her generosity and support for Kerry Hospice will be a source of consolation to her family and a fitting tribute to her legacy.

“She was instrumental in bringing Mike Buckley on board, who also brought a big following with him. Patsy and Mike’s walk hand in hand down the catwalk got a great response from the audience.

“When her family recall events from her life I’m sure that the memory of her participation in the “Models in Recovery” Fashion Show 2018 will be a happy and satisfying one for them,” he said.

“To her daughters Linda and Niamh, her son Adrian, and extended family, we offer our deepest sympathies.”

Carry Out opens flagship Reeks store

Popular off licence chain Carry Out have launched a new flagship store in Killarney. The new shop, which is located at the Reeks Gateway, was officially opened last week and customers have quickly warmed to the large stateof-the-art premises which stocks a wide selection of beers, wines and spirits.

Carry Out have had a strong presence in Killarney for 15 years; their former store across the street initially opened its doors in 2003.

John Fleming of Carry Out Killarney says the new location is ideal.

“It’s on the left-hand-side on the way out of town, it’s double the size and it can be seen from everywhere,” John said. “It’s the first unit you see when you come into Killarney and it’s all glass, so all the products are totally visible. The product isn’t damaged because we have no sun on this side of the road.

Customers can enjoy a more spacious and convenient shopping experience, John added.

“It’s a lot more shoppable and a lot more user friendly,” he said. “We were a bit cluttered but now you can walk into the new store with your handbag and not worry about knocking over any of the displays!”

The new look was the brainchild of John and his wife, Mary, Dave Long (Manager) and his interior designer fiancée Kadri Bormeister, and David O’Keeffe (Carry Out National Sales Manager).

“We are the new flagship Carry Out store in Ireland,” John said. “All of the Carry Outs around the country will be coming down to check this new style. It’s unique to Carry Out and its unique to Killarney as well.”

The new premises will also allow Carry Out Killarney to add to their range, with more high-end whiskeys and wines available. This week the first batch of the Dingle Pot Still Whiskey arrived in the store and Carry Out is the first place in Killarney to have it in stock. Great Southern Hotel plan festive family flick for charity Staff at the Great Southern Hotel are really getting into the Christmas spirit – not only are they screening a festive film - but also kindly donating proceeds to charity.

Staff at the hotel are planning an elf-tastic festive family flick, on Sunday December 16, with all proceeds going to children’s charity, DEBRA Ireland.

Guests can enjoy complimentary hot chocolate, candy floss and popcorn for kids, and warm mulled wine for grown-ups, prior to the screening of the movie ‘Elf’, at 3pm.

2018 could be the fourth warmest year on record

2018 is on course to be the fourth warmest on record, according to the World Meteorological Organization. It says that the global average temperature for the first 10 months of the year was nearly 1C above the levels between 1850-1900.

The State of the Climate report says that the 20 warmest years on record have been in the past 22 years, with the 2015-2018 making up the top four.

If the trend continues, the WMO says temperatures may rise by 3-5C by 2100.

The temperature rise for 2018 of 0.98C comes from five independently maintained global data sets.

The WMO says that one of the factors that has slightly cooled 2018 compared to previous years was the La Niña weather phenomenon which is associated with lower than average sea surface temperatures.

Researchers say now that a weak El Niño is expected to form in early 2019 which might make next year warmer than this one.

Trump Corner Trump calls off one-to-one Putin meeting US President Donald Trump has called off a one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, just hours after the Kremlin had confirmed that the meeting would be going ahead.

In a tweet sent from Air Force One, Trump said he had cancelled the meeting, which was due to take place at the Group of 20 summit in Argentina, because of Russia’s seizure of Ukrainian ships and sailors over the weekend.

Trump had previously cast the Buenos Aires sit-down into doubt, telling The Washington Post he might cancel seeing Putin after Russia’s naval action sparked global condemnation and a sharp escalation in tensions between the neighbours. But he seemed to reverse course as he left the White House on Thursday, telling reporters that the meeting with Putin was still on.

But shortly afterwards, Trump tweeted: “Based on the fact that the ships and sailors have not been returned to Ukraine from Russia, I have decided it would be best for all parties concerned to cancel my previ-

ously scheduled meeting in Argentina with President Vladimir Putin. I look forward to a meaningful Summit again as soon as this situation is resolved!”

The ongoing crisis between Russia and Ukraine has continued to worsen. The Ukrainian government is hopeful that Trump will pressure Putin on the confrontation, which began Sunday when Russia fired on Ukrainian ships trying to enter the Kerch Strait, a crucial waterway separating the Black and Azov seas.

250 marathon runners caught taking shortcut Almost 250 runners are facing bans after traffic cameras captured them taking shortcuts through bushes.

Organisers of the half marathon in Shenzhen, China also discovered 18 runners wearing fake bibs and three runners they described as “imposters”.

Footage captured by Shenzhen police traffic cameras showed runners cutting through bushes to an adjacent carriageway, instead of continuing along the road and making a U-turn.

Organisers said the 237 people

caught cheating would have run two or three kilometres less than the full 21-kilometre (13.1-mile) distance.

The annual race in China’s fourth largest city typically attracts about 16,000 runners. News of the cheating led to the People’s Daily newspaper - one of China’s biggest publications - to urge runners to “respect the marathon and respect sporting spirit” in an editorial.

Last year, organisers of the Beijing Half Marathon introduced a facial recognition system to stop runners using ringers to run on their behalf.

Violence against Africans far higher in Ireland than in UK

Ireland has one of the highest rates of violence against people of African descent in the European Union, a study suggests. 12% of Africans surveyed in this country said they had experienced racist violence, the second highest rate of all countries surveyed.

According to the report, only Finland (13%) has a bigger problem with this kind of racist violence.

By contrast, the UK (3%) and Portugal (2%) had a relatively low rate. In total, 5% of the 6,000 people surveyed said they had experienced racist violence, including by police officers.

The majority said they did not report incidents because they either felt it would not change anything or because they did not trust or were afraid of the police, the report said.

The Being Black in the EU surveyed nearly 6,000 people in 12 EU countries - including France and Germany - between 2015 and 2016.

About 30% of the overall respondents said they had experienced some form of racial harassment in the five years before the survey.

This ranged from 63% of respondents in Finland to 21% in the UK and 20% in Malta.

Convicted murderer confesses to 90 killings Ballybrack apologise for “killing off” Spanish player

An imprisoned murderer in the US is being investigated after confessing to 90 killings over a 35-year period. The FBI believe Samuel Little (78) may be among the most prolific serial killers in US criminal history.

State and federal agencies are now trying to match his confessions with the deaths of dozens of women across the country over the course of four decades.

Investigators say they have already linked him to 34 murders and are working to corroborate many others. Little is currently facing life in prison after being convicted of the murders of three women in 2014.

He has been in custody since September 2012 when he was arrested at a Kentucky homeless shelter and transferred to California where he was wanted on a drugs charge.

DNA samples taken from Little were then linked to the unsolved deaths

of three women in Los Angeles county in 1987 and 1989. All three of those victims had been beaten and strangled before their bodies were dumped separately.

He pleaded not guilty at trial, but was eventually sentenced to three consecutive life sentences with no chance of parole. Before that he already had an extensive criminal record, with offences including rape and armed robbery.

The murder convictions led to Little being referred to the FBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP) - a scheme that works to analyse serial offenders of violent and sexual crimes, and share information with local law enforcement agencies to cross-reference unsolved crimes.

Officials from the programme say they then uncovered an “alarming pattern” and “compelling links” to many more murders across the US.

Castleblayney suspect had been on run for near identical incident The chief suspect for an incident in Castleblayney which left one man dead and a garda injured has been on the run for eight years - following an almost identical incident in which the very same garda was injured.

According to reports, the man is a well-known criminal in his 30s from Keady, Co. Armagh. He has been in custody since he was arrested after the crash.

Earlier on Thursday An Garda Siochána said a woman who helped a garda at the scene of the crash had come forward.

The man who died, Stephen Marron (47), was sitting in his Skoda Octavia on Main Street outside a fast food restaurant where he worked as a food delivery man. He died after a silver Audi A6 swerved into the back of the parked Octavia at speed.

Leinster Senior League side Ballybrack FC have issued an apology to Fernando Nuno La-Fuente after a club official falsely claimed that the Spaniard had died in a motorcycle collision. It is believed that the official lied about LaFuente’s death so the team, who were missing a number of players, could get out of playing a game against Arklow Town.

“It has come to the attention of the club, senior players and the management team that a gross error of judgement has occurred, emanating from correspondence sent from a member of the senior management team to the LSL,” the club’s statement said.

“As of this evening, an emergency meeting was held and the person in question has been relieved of all footballing duties within Ballybrack FC. The club has contacted Fernando to confirm his whereabouts, wellbeing and are thankful for his acceptance of our apology on this matter.

“This grave and unacceptable mistake was completely out of character and was made by a person who has been experiencing severe personal difficulties, un-

beknownst to any other members of the club.

“At this stage we can only offer our sincere apologies to the Leinster Senior League, our opponents Arklow Town FC and the host of clubs and football people who made contact with us or offered messages of support in recent days.”

LSL officials are currently investigating the incident and a strong punishment is on the cards.

German teen loses driving licence after 49 minutes Things have gone really quite badly for a teenager in a town called Hermer, Germany. Just 49 minutes after passing his driving test, local police caught him speeding at almost double the posted speed limit, earning himself a four-week driving ban and a €200 fine.

Oops.

The 18-year-old had four friends in the car when he was caught doing 95kph in a 50kph zone. Looks as though he just couldn’t wait until he got to his local derestricted Autobahn to put his foot down.

Naturally, the offending driver will have to

undergo “expensive retraining” to get his licence back. And when he does, the normally two-year long probationary period will be doubled to four years.

British MP reveals he is HIV positive A British MP has revealed he is HIV positive during a House of Commons debate on public health.

Lloyd Russell-Moyle, the Labour MP for Brighton Kemptown, is the first MP to reveal his HIV status in the Commons and the second to disclose he is living with the condition.

He said he felt compelled to speak out about an issue which had affected him personally. Mr Russell-Moyle urged ministers to review cuts to sexual health budg-

ets. He told the Commons that next year would mark 10 years since he became HIV positive.

Finding out he had the virus was a “real shock” but it was “not the end of the world, even though it might feel like that for a few seconds”, Mr Russell-Moyle, 32, said.

The MP said he chose the timing of his announcement to mark the 30th World Aids Day, which is on Saturday.

Marie O’Sullivan and Eilish Coakley both from Rathmore, Mary Myers of Firies, and Marian Favier of Glenflesk, were joined by current and past work colleagues for a night of chat, songs and reminiscing, at The Shire Bar, Killarney.

The party was attended by their immediate family members, as well as current and retired staff from the HSE. Marie, Mary and Marian began their nursing careers as students at the school of nursing at St Finian’s Hospital in Killarney, which is now closed.

Eilish commenced her nurse training at St James Hospital Dublin, and later transferred to Kerry Mental Health Services.

Over the years the four nurses have worked in a wide variety of roles in different areas covering all of the county.

However, they all finished up working in the Killarney sector.

Over the years they have witnessed numerous developments and changes in the Mental Health Services including the move from institutional care to Community Care. This led to the eventual closure of the last unit at St Finian’s Hospital, Killarney, in 2017.

They all feel extremely privileged and honoured to have worked in the Mental Health Services and thoroughly enjoyed their careers as nurses.

They are looking forward to retirement and finally getting the opportunities to do things that they never had time for.

getting the opportunities to do things that we never had time for including travel, gardening, pantomime, and spending time with our families and grandchildren.”

Marian, Mary, Eilish and Marie would like to thank the staff and management of The Shire for their hospitality.

SONOS AND ALEXA A winning combination

The Sonos One, the first Sonos smart speaker, was launched amidst a mass of brand new clever speakers, as Apple, Amazon, Google and more, all got in on the AI action.

These were all speakers made by companies that are smart, but not first and foremost experts in audio. That’s why for hi-fi fans, the more recent trend for audio companies licensing smart technology is much more interesting. The Sonos One is essentially a Play:1 with the Amazon Alexa built-in, and that’s a winning combination in our book. Although you can switch Alexa off entirely, it’s often worth having her listening, particularly because she is more deeply integrated than her rivals. The clearest example is that you can talk to One exactly as you would Amazon’s own Echo, so instead of having to say “Alexa, play Abba on Sonos”, you simply say “Alexa, play Bowie”, and one of their classics will spring forth from your One. That might sound like a small detail, but, in terms of regular interaction it’s a big differ-

ence. If you want to voice-control music in other rooms, specify where, eg. “Alexa, play Bowie in the lounge”, the One will send music to the Sonos kit you’ve ascribed to that ‘zone’ – even a non-Alexa-enabled Sonos speaker, such as a PlayBar or Play:5. “Alexa, play Bowie everywhere” sets all your Sonos speakers to synchronised Ziggy Stardust mode.

Having been a huge fan of Sonos from the beginning, mainly because of its streamlined look and lack of wires (great for the interiors obsessed and those of us that hate cleaning pesky wires to vacuum up or under!), I got the new Sonos One with Alexia built in to try - and was seriously impressed by it. It has increased the use of my Sonos tenfold as I often had to stop what I was doing to find my phone, open the app, and search for the music I wanted to hear, especially when knee deep in painting, DIY’ing or flour (I’m a messy cook!). But with Alexia you just tell her what you want to hear - and voila your favorite music is on in seconds. This is definitely going on my list for Santa.

The all-new Porsche 911 Two weeks ago we featured an image of the latest Porsche 911 pictured in Killarney testing various parts. This week Porsche has unveiled the new generation 911 ahead of the LA Motor Show. These are the officially-official first images of the latest generation of the iconic German sports car.

Yes, the silhouette is very much a 911 but the proportions have had a radical shake-up. Unlike 911s of the past, there will be no narrow body cars as the front track has been widened by 40mm, and all Carreras will have the same wide booty of the GTS. It doesn’t matter if it’s two or four-wheel drive, its one-size-fits-all bodyshells for everybody. One that’s made of more aluminium than ever.

Another new introduction is staggered wheel sizing; which, in the Carrera S, means 20-inch fronts and 21-inch rears. Up front, there’s now a recessed bonnet that nods back to design cues on early 911s while the rear has been shot into the future with this year’s must-have design cue: a full-width lightbar.

Underneath that familiar shape lies the cleanest and most technologically advanced 911 ever. Most importantly, it’s quick. Still powered by an engine, at face value it’s similar to the 3.0-litre turbocharged flat-six that you get in the current 911. Because of new, stricter emissions regulations, it’s cleaner and more efficient than ever.

End of an era for F1 Fernando Alonso said farewell to Formula One last Sunday as his former teammate and new five-time champion Lewis Hamilton claimed his 11th victory of the season at an eventful Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Alonso, driving his 311th and final F1 race, finished just out of the points in the uncompetitive McLaren after driving with his usual skill and determination.

“Champ, what a career, thank you, thank you, let’s go out and win the triple crown,” he was told by team boss Zak Brown, a reference to Alonso’s future bid to add the Indy 500 to his two F1 championships and Le Mans 24-hour race victory.

Hamilton, who paired with Alonso at McLaren at the start of his career in 2007, took a comfortable win from pole position to cap his title winning campaign in style. Sebastian Vettel, so long a challenger to Hamilton this season, finished second for Ferrari with in-form Max Verstappen completing the podium for Red Bull.

Hamilton and Vettel then joined Alonso for a tri-

ple parade of champions before spinning their cars in frenzied tyre-burning donuts in front of a delighted crowd.

“It’s been a pleasure racing with these champions,” said Alonso. “Thanks to everyone and to Formula One, I will always be a fan of this sport,” added the Spaniard.

Audi e-tron GT concept exposed Audi has pulled the trigger early on its release of the Audi e-tron GT concept, uploading three images of the camouflaged car. The official images weren’t supposed to be shown for another day and expose the front, rear and side of the new Audi, which has visual ties to the Audi A7 Sportback and almost looks like a stretched version of the Audi TT. Full details will be revealed at the Audi e-tron GT concept’s public premiere at the Los Angeles

motor show but it is understood the Tesla Model S competitor is based on the same J1 platform as the upcoming Porsche Taycan. And that means it’ll be crazy fast.

While the Audi e-tron SUV will sprint to 100km/h in just under six seconds, the e-tron GT is tipped to blitz the automotive acceleration benchmark in under three seconds.

That would make it one of the most ballistic Audis ever built.

“The active ingredient, which has the greatest effect, is botulinum toxin. A variety of brands are used, depending on the clients skin. When injected into muscles, Botox blocks the nerve impulses that cause a particular muscle to contract. The muscle cannot move and thus the appearance of wrinkles is reduced.”

Botox reduces wrinkles in areas of the face that move, she added.

“The effects of a Botox treatment typically lasts four to six months depending on your age, your skincare, skin condition and type.

But with ongoing treatments the effect can last longer. It can be described as a build-up, and a reinforcing of the effect if done regularly. Everyone has different results and it lasts for different lengths of time.”

Aghadoe Cottage and Gardens (across from the German Butchers Fossa) was built 1941 by Anthony MacGillycuddy - its windows, most of the internal woodwork, entrance doors, fireplaces, internal staircases were all taken from Flesk Castle. The family moved from Flesk to Aghadoe as the castle was too large to maintain. In later years it was bought by Liebherr. It was burnt down by vandals and remains derilect today.

What to get your favourite gardener for Christmas

With Christmas around the corner everyone seems to be in a panic about presents – but a gardener is probably the easiest person to buy for.

An obvious choice is a voucher for a garden centre. I know people are reluctant to buy vouchers, but believe me, every gardener has that one plant they cannot bring themselves to spend money on.

Gardeners always need tools, garden trowels, forks and spades break with surprising frequency. Treat your loved one to stainless steel tools as they will last much longer. Gardening gloves are always welcome too. I recently saw a pair called ‘Badger Claw’ with hard wearing scrapers at the end of the fingers – ideal for weeding and generally loosening the soil. Thermometers are another thing which break easily, and having an outdoor and indoor maximum and minimum thermometer can be of real use to the enthusiast. Pots are also something which the gardener themselves may not always splash out on.

There is such a wonderful range of glazed and plastic pots available that it really is a treat to be given one – or a pair. Bird houses and feeders are great gifts too as birds are such a vital and integral part of the garden. Feeders tend to be rather short lived, so again, if you can, splash out on stainless steel or good

quality plastic ones. These are also ideal for elderly friends. There is nothing as pleasurable as looking out of the window at the chatter and activity of birds around the feeders.

Subscriptions to magazines are another idea and there are many to choose from. When it comes to books, a good rule of thumb is to go for the most simple and easy to follow for a new gardener, and as elaborate or specific as possible for the seasoned one. The Royal Horticultural Society print a fantastic range such as ‘Botany for the Gardener’ or ‘Latin for the Gardener’, as well as their frequently updated encyclopaedia of plants. There are many books about specific areas of gardening, so if your recipient has spoken about a new patio, veggie plot or houseplant collection, you have an inkling of where to look!

Garden art, and sculpture in particular, is becoming more popular. There are pieces for every budget, from the cute owls and other lifelike animals available, to the amazing works of art I see advertised online and in magazines.

Having suggested all of these gifts, the very best thing Santa can arrive with is actual plants. Difficult to wrap, maybe, but appreciated – definitely! There are many unusual berried plants available, and beautiful varieties of conifers. Bowls planted with bulbs are something you can never go wrong with!

On the first anniversary of the tragic death of Denise, we her parents Denis and Grace, brother Shane, boyfriend Daniel, aunts, uncle, cousins, wish to express our heartfelt thanks to relatives, friends, neighbours and work colleagues who shared our sad loss, and helped us through this difficult time.

We acknowledge in a special way those who were first on the scene who assisted Denise, also Denis O’Brien and family, Barraduff First Responders, Glenflesk GAA for the use of the defibrillator, and the emergency services who worked so hard to save her. Our deepest gratitude to Fr. George Hayes for his help and support on the night of the accident.

A sincere thank you to those who supplied and erected the lighting. Our heartfelt thanks to those who organised and assisted with stewarding, who along with the help of the gardai, allowed the traffic to flow freely. This enabled us to have a home wake for Denise. You will be forever in our prayers.

A special word of thanks to those who spent the nights with Denise as she lay in repose. We acknowledge in a special way Msgr. Dan for the recital of the Rosary, and for his love and support during the year.

We are truly grateful to those who travelled in such large numbers from far and near. Thank you to those who telephoned, sent mass cards, enrolments, letters of condolences and floral tributes.

To her many friends, her work colleagues from Robs Ranch and Liebherr, Rathmore GAA, The Board of Management of Barraduff School, Barraduff Tidy Village Committee, and those who prepared, brought and serviced a constant flow of food, we thank you for your thoughtfulness.

We offer particular thanks to Denise’s friends and classmates from the Computer Science Department U.C.C. Professor Cormac Sreenan, and Dr. John Herbert who supported us in so many ways. Sincere thanks to Fr. Gerard Dunne and the chaplaincy team at U.C.C. We are grateful to Fr. Pat for kindly facilitating Denise’s funeral mass at home, for making it so special and for his continuous support. Thank you to Msgr.

We would like to thank the doctors in the Denagh Practice for their care and kindness to Sheila over the years. Still no answers from East Kerry Board Adam Moynihan Despite growing player unrest, the East Kerry Board has refused to comment on its controversial scheduling policy which will see teams in action throughout the month of December.

Two weeks ago, the Killarney Advertiser exclusively revealed the extent to which players have become disillusioned with the timing of the East Kerry Championship. Since then, I have personally reached out to the PRO of the East Kerry Board, the Secretary of the East Kerry Board, the Chairman of the East Kerry Board and the Chairman of the CCC for a comment and to perhaps address some of the players’ concerns.

I am yet to receive a single response.

The final of this year’s East Kerry Championship, also known as the O’Donoghue Cup, will not be staged until December 22. Teams started training in January of this year (at the latest). That’s a yearlong season with no breaks and no gap before the start of the next campaign. This represents a major player welfare issue and the feeling locally is that something has to change.

It isn’t the first time this is has happened in East Kerry but this year it seems as though players are simply fed up with the situation. Many have claimed that the East Kerry Board didn’t avail of free weekends earlier in the calendar, with some also accusing the Board of intentionally delaying games involving teams who had players on the East Kerry senior panel. East Kerry, led

by Fossa brothers David and Paudie Clifford, reached the last four of the 2018 Kerry SFC, their best showing in the competition in a number of years.

The O’Donoghue Cup first round game between Fossa v Dr Crokes, which should have been played earlier in the year, will now take place on December 5.

The other side of the draw is already at the semi-final stage.

National problem

The fixtures crisis is causing consternation on a national level. Roscommon GAA recently tabled a motion asking the GAA to adopt a ‘blank canvas’ approach to scheduling for 2019, which they hoped would reform the association’s master schedule from top to bottom.

The motion, which was strongly endorsed by the Club Players Association, was defeated on Saturday. The GAA say they will revisit the issue in the summer.

With no action imminent from the GAA Central Council, the pressure is now on county and district boards to address this crisis head-on.

To be fair to the Kerry County Board, the Club Championship and County League were run off in a timely and efficient fashion in 2018 and the staging of the

County Championship was also largely successful.

The feeling amongst players in Killarney and the surrounding parishes is that the Super League and the O’Donoghue Cup, two East Kerry competitions that bookend the club football season in this part of the world, are causing most of the problems.

One possible solution would see the opening rounds of the East Kerry Championship played at the start of the year, which would allow the tournament to be played off quickly once the County Championship has concluded in October.

Players must act

As I said last week, the onus is now on the players to make their voices heard. I would urge senior squads across East Kerry to sit down and discuss the issue as a group. Put your concerns down in writing and submit them to your club. If you don’t take on this responsibility now, there’s every possibility that we’ll be sitting

here in a year’s time having exactly the same conversation all over again.

The East Kerry Board answers to its clubs. If the majority of clubs want change, the Board will have to take action. And I’m sure they’ll be happy to do so once they know exactly how the players feel.

Adam Moynihan A month ago, the GAA’s five proposed rule changes were trialled in three 20-minute challenge matches between the freshers of Maynooth University, DIT and Trinity. Afterwards, coaches said that their players left the field “frustrated”. I’d imagine that was putting it mildly.

Even on paper the new rules looked like a terrible idea and in the trial, none of them actually worked.

The new kick-out set-up, which was supposed to leave two players from each team inside the 45m lines from each restart, was so unworkable the referee was forced to abandon it completely halfway through. If an opposition defender was close to their goal, keepers simply kicked the ball out quickly and earned their team a free. If their own player wasn’t in position, they had to wait until they were, slowing the game down to a snail’s pace.

Colm O’Rourke, who is an advocate for the new rules in general, tried them out with his school team, St Pat’s Navan, and he admitted that the kick-out rule was “a mess”. To be honest, I can’t believe the idea even made it to the trial phase. It was madness.

The GAA ultimately amended the rule so that now it simply states that kick-outs must be taken from the 20m line and reach beyond the 45m line. That’s not the worst plan in the world but it will definitely slow the game down. Firstly, keepers have to run an extra seven metres to tee up their kick. Secondly, the keeper will have to wait until his teammates are in position outside the 45. And thirdly, unless you’re an elite kicker of the ball, 25-metre plus kick-outs take longer to spot and execute than 10-or-15-metre ones.

Some of the other newly-approved laws are even more problematic, perhaps most notably the frankly dumbfounding “three hand pass” rule. I think we would all prefer if there was less hand-passing in Gaelic football but simply imposing a rule that prevents teams from stringing more than three hand passes together completely misses the point.

After three handpasses, players are not just going to say, “Right, I can’t handpass the ball now so I’ll just ping this 40-yard diagonal into the corner forward”.

Footballers these days are cautious by nature.

They’ve been conditioned to keep possession at all costs and to be patient. This, of course, is a direct response to facing defensively-minded teams who

get everyone behind the ball in the hope of frustrating the opposition into taking the ball into contact or, funnily enough, kicking it long into a congested area.

The reality is that when players receive possession on the second or third handpass, they’re not going to suddenly morph into Ciarán McDonald. They’re simply going to turn around and play it safe by kicking the ball 30 metres back to an unmarked teammate. So this law is actually going to have the exact opposite effect to what was initially intended.

It doesn’t take a lot of imagination to that figure out and, in fact, you don’t need to imagine because that’s exactly what happened in the trial matches up in Dublin last month. The GAA are bringing it in for the league regardless.

Forcing players to go forward from a sideline kick is another crazy law with very obvious pitfalls. This is another amendment aimed at making the game more attacking but ultimately it’s only going to benefit the defenders. The team without the ball will put everyone goal side and pack the area between the kicker and their own goal, making it more difficult for the attacking team to retain possession.

You’re going to have instances where the kicker just lumps aimless balls to no one in particular. How is that going to improve the game?

The advanced mark isn’t a bad idea in theory but when you look closely, the exact stipulations are bizarre. Players can call a mark inside the opposition

45 when they catch a pass of over 20 metres, but the pass also has to come from within the opposition 45. I have no idea what the thinking is here. Surely a kick from outside the 45 into a scoring area is something we want to promote? Again, it just doesn’t seem to make sense.

The fifth and final rule, the 10-minute sin bin for black card offences, could be good but there’s one potential drawback. As a team, what would your natural reaction be if you were down to 14 men for 10 minutes? Defend, defend, defend, and slow the game down as much as possible. A rule designed to cut out cynical play could, ironically, lead to an extended 10-minute period of cynical play.

Look, when it comes down to it, all of these rules are aimed at eradicating defensive, negative and, at times, boring football. These particular ones are poor but even if we eventually manage to come up with brilliant new laws that actually work, teams are going to be negative if they want to be negative.

You can’t force a player to be expansive if that style of play isn’t in him or if it isn’t part of his team’s culture.

Modern day coaches, especially ones from traditionally smaller counties/clubs, have realised that it’s quicker and easier to build hard-working, defensive teams than it is to build teams who can go out and play the right way.

As long as that mentality prevails in Gaelic football, rule changes won’t mean a whole pile.

New rules to be trialled in pre-season tournaments & National League Rule 1:

A restriction of three consecutive handpasses by a team in possession.

Rule 2:

All sideline kicks to be played forward.

Rule 3:

Celebrations on the double as Crokes and Kilcummin prevail Eamonn Fitzgerald There were celebrations on the double locally on Sunday last when Kilcummin won their first ever Munster IFC title and Dr Crokes were crowned senior provincial champions for the eighth time.

It was Crokes’ fifth since 2011 and they will now meet the Leinster champions in the All-Ireland semi-final in February. Kilmacud Crokes are odds on to win the Leinster final.

The Clare champions, playing in their first Munster club final, needed a good start, but they got off to the worst start imaginable. Gavin O’Shea opened the scoring in the second minute with a well taken point and one minute later David Shaw pounced for a goal after picking up a great pass across the face of the goal by Kieran O’Leary.

Points by Daithí Casey, Tony Brosnan (two), a 45 from Shane Murphy and a fine Kieran O ‘Leary point after a trade mark run through the Clare defence by Gavin White put Crokes 1-6 to no score ahead after 14 minutes. St Joseph’s picked themselves up with two points and then the large band of Clare followers roared in delight in the 20th minute when a great run by Conor Cleary was picked up by Oisín Looney. He rifled a great shot into Shane Murphy’s net.

Crokes returned to their scoring spree with Tony Brosnan in particular very prominent on the scoreboard. He scored eight points overall.

Interval lead

Crokes led by 1-10 to 1-4 at the interval and really St Joseph’s were playing catch up in the second half. Crokes started to empty the bench as early as the as the 39th minute when Michael Potts, one of their bright young stars, came on for Shane Doolan. The rest followed in due course. Crokes were never tested and were in cruise control for the remainder of the game. Crokes’ most valuable player was Tony Brosnan. The Lewis Raod club are now likely to be playing right up to Christmas.

They are at home to Kerins O’Rahillys on Sunday next in the County League Division 1 final, which will be followed by O’Donoghue Cup commitments.

That lead was stretched further on the resumption as Keane and Seán O’Leary were on target. However, after a Ruairí O’Hagan free, Fermoy had a great chance of a levelling goal but William Maher made a super goal-line block to deny De Róiste.

O’Hagan did reduce the gap with another free but Philip Casey gave them breathing space with a fine score and, at the death, Damien O’Leary set up Devane for the clinching goal.

Strengthened

Bonfires blazed in the parish to welcome home the Kilcummin heroes who brought home the Munster intermediate title for the first time in the club’s history.

Kerry have completely dominated this grade, winning it 12 times in all and that was by 11 different clubs. Ardfert won it twice.

This was a game in which goals were vital in the outcome of the contest. In the first 10 minutes, Fermoy were awarded two penalties; they scored one and drove the other one wide. The Kilcummin goal did not come until three minutes into injury time when Ian Devane scored the insurance goal and the large Kilcummin contingent could breathe a sigh of relief.

Fermoy started the brighter and led in the first 10 minutes. Then came the penalties which might well have given a different outcome to the game, but Kilcummin settled and points by Noel Duggan and Matt Keane had the sides level at the end of the first quarter.

The return to the starting 15 of Kevin McCarthy and Kieran Murphy strengthened the Kilcummin side who will now prepare for the O’Donoghue Cup. McCarthy broke his hand early in the game but played on until the 60th minute. It was a great day for the Murphy brother with Kieran winning with Kilcummin and Shane winning with Crokes.

The Lakers started the second half slowly but a bustup between O’Brien and Portlaoise’s Trevor Swayne seemed to energise the Philadelphia native and he grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck thereafter. A nice basket and an assist for a Dailian Mason three meant the Lakers led by seven at the end of the third.

But the Panthers, who were without the services of American Mike Pierre, continued to battle and with three minutes to play, they trailed by a single point.

They were really rolling by this stage and when Swayne snuck in and elevated for an easy lay-up, it appeared as though the Lakers’ lead was no more.

Mark Greene had other ideas.

The club captain came out of nowhere to rise high above his opponent and emphatically swat his shot off the blackboard and to safety. The Lakers went down the other end and sharpshooter Dailian Mason drained a corner three to give his side some breathing space.

Cheered on by a buoyant home crowd, the Killarney

team extended their lead to 10 and despite some late buckets from the Panthers, including a three at the buzzer, they held on for another crucial win.

The result consolidates their second place spot in the Southern Conference and sets them up well for Saturday night’s hotly anticipated cup quarter-final against Limerick Celtics.

MVP: Hard to look beyond O’Brien who had 26 points but skipper Mark Greene came good when his team needed him most. Pádraig Lucey and Séamus Brosnan also made valuable contributions off the bench.

The Lakers and the Panthers were both understrength going into this mid-season league game but the players on show still offered up one of the most entertaining games the Auracle has seen of late.

That’s not to say that it was a vintage performance from the hosts. With just three players on the bench, Coach Cormac O’Donoghue’s hands were tied at times but they battled well against a valiant Portlaoise side that was full of endeavour and guile.

In-form Dutch forward Papito Hersisia was out through suspension so Pádraig Lucey saw plenty of game time and the 6’8” Killarney man did well, finishing the night with 13 points on 4/4 shooting and 5/8 from the free throw line.

American Seán O’Brien was once again the catalyst for the Lakers and just before half-time he poured cold water on a decent Portlaoise run with a trademark clutch three. It was very much a back and forth game throughout but Cormac O’Donoghue’s side led by five, 46-41, at the interval.

Captain Greene hoping for big crowd President’s Cup Quarter-Final Scotts Lakers v Limerick Celtics Saturday at 7pm (Killarney Sports Centre)

Adam Moynihan Scotts Lakers captain Mark Greene is hopeful that Killarney’s basketball community will come out in force this Saturday night for a crucial cup game that could define his team’s season.

The President’s Cup presents a real opportunity for the Lakers to pick up silverware in their second year back in the big time and victory over the Limerick Celtics would bring them one step closer to the televised final in January.

Greene says crowds have been good so far this year but an especially big turn out for this cup game would really spur the players on.

“It makes a big difference to us when there’s a big crowd at the game,” he said.

“Obviously the onus is on the players to give the crowd something to cheer about but when you’re playing in front of a full house and the volume levels are high, it certainly gives the players more energy.

“It gives us something to feed off.”

The Lakers defeated the Celtics in the league in October but the skipper is expecting an even tougher encounter this time out.

“They’re never easy to play against,” he said. “They were missing a few players when we last played against them but when they’re at full strength, they’re definitely a good side. They move the ball well, they’re good in transition and they’ll certainly be up for it.

“There’s something special about a cup game. It’s the same in every sport. It’s knockout so there’s always a bit more excitement.”

The Lakers are currently on a 7-0 run in all competitions and will be hoping to keep the momentum going ahead of a busy couple of weeks in the Southern Conference.

Cormac O’Donoghue’s team will play two more home games before Christmas.

Perfect weekend for Killarney rugby Rugby in the Killarney area certainly appears to be thriving and that was very evident last weekend as the KRFC U-14, U-16 and senior men’s teams all picked up impressive victories, racking up 66 points and conceding zero in the process.

The seniors accounted for 32 of those points as tries from Damien O’Carroll (two), Brian Lynch and Ger Moynihan gave them a comprehensive victory over Douglas/ Carrigaline. The Killarney side were aided in no small part by a Man of the Match performance from Colin McCarthy and Oisín O’Shea also chipped in with 12 points from the boot.

It was a real team performance from start to finish and the excellent tackling, decision-making and discipline on show will certainly have pleased Killarney Head Coach Diarmuid O’Malley.

The U-14s also got the better of Castleisland last Saturday thanks largely to a spectacular hat-trick from dynamic out-half Pierce Slattery. Josh Coffey was Killarney’s other try scorer on the day while Finn Kennelly added a conversion to round off the scoring.

SCÓR NA nÓG: Mid Kerry final of Scór na nÓg was held last week. Congratulations to Glenbeigh/Glencar who won the Instrumental Music, to Keel who won the Solo Singing, Recitation and Ballad Group and to Beaufort who won the set. All go forward to the County Final in the Racecourse, Killarney on Saturday, December 15 at 2pm. Good luck going forward. Again we have to say a massive thanks to our Scór Officer Mary Clifford who always does a wonderful job.
