EARLY CAREER: Niall Doherty pictured during the early days of his career with The Gleneagle Hotel.

The late Fr John ‘Florian’ Farrelly.

Niall has a treasure trove of memories and stories from his many years in The “IGleneagle.lovedseeing all the artists and musicians perform down through the years, especially Joe Loss and his orchestra and of course Joe Dolan. My favourite performance ever was by fellow Donegal man Rory Gallagher back in 1983," he “Evensaid.back in the early days, The Gleneagle was always a busy place, I remember waxing and polishing the floor of the ballroom every two weeks - there was so much dancing between socials, weddings and dances. I loved my time in The Gleneagle, I made great friends over the years and shared many great times with guests and locals alike.” Patrick O’Donoghue, who is among the third generation of O’Donoghue’s to work with Niall said, that they'd like "to sincerely thank Niall for his hard work and commitment over his many years at the hotel". "I know our dad Maurice, in particular, highly valued his input and honesty," Patrick said. "Niall always said it like it was, never fearing the repercussions. While we will miss working with him, we wish him and his family every happiness in his retirement."

Fr John ‘Florian’ Farrelly was a member of the Franciscan community and attached to the Rossnowlagh Friary in County Donegal. Fr Florian was previously attached to the Killarney Friary and served as the local Guardian in the 1980s. He was on his way to visit friends and colleagues in Killarney – his first visit to the locality since before the pandemic.

Niall retires from The Gleneagle Hotel after 51 years' service

For over five decades he has been the friendly face at The Gleneagle Hotel - and there's not many he hasn't met from around the country or the world - but this week it was time for Niall Doherty to say a final farewell. Friends and colleagues gathered together to say goodbye to Niall who dedicated 51 years of his career to the hotel. Niall began in hospitality in Jackson’s Bar in his native Ballybofey, Co. Donegal. In 1968 he moved to Killarney to take up a post as a barman at The Three Lakes Hotel. For the following three years, he divided his time between summers in Killarney and winters in London but love intervened and had him settle in Killarney for good. Niall met his wife, Greta Breen from Glencar, in Killarney and by 1975 they were married. Niall joined The Gleneagle in 1971 after being headhunted by the late Maurice O’Donoghue and soon became a wellknown face behind the bar at the hotel. In more recent years, he worked in beverage stock management where his expertise and attention to detail will be greatly missed.

It was one hell of a first day for Killarney jockey Oisin Murphyduring the first episode of RTÉ's Special Forces: Ultimate Hell Week - The Professionals on Wednesday night. The Ballyhar man - known as Number 8 on the gruelling special forces selection course - seemed unprepared for challenges and strict instructions from Chief Instructors Ray Goggins, Alan O’Brien, Ger Reidy and Robert Stafford - all known as DS - who claimed he had "an attitude".

"I got a nice slap to the head while sat in the truck with the head thing on!" Oisin told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "That was a nice wake up call. It was full on and relentless! I found the swimming very Viewersdifficult."will have to wait until next Wednesday night at 9.30pm to see how he gets on.

Calling all 1972 Sem students for special reunion

The past students will host a gala reunion in the Killarney Plaza on October 1. Around 100 students would have sat the State Exams 50 years ago. So far organisers have 89 names on a list of people they want at the event. However, they have only accurate contact details for 30 of these and they are calling on the people of Killarney to fill in the Manyblanks.oftheir colleagues are scattered all over the world – the most famous being Fr Martin Ashe, from Park Road, who is the current Assistant Bishop of “WeMelbourne.have located some of our past teachers too, one being a Mr Lenane who was my Latin teacher and I subsequently went on to be a Latin and Greek teacher,” said Dan O’Connor, who is one of organisers and who has lived in Dublin since 1972. The school’s GAA team was highly regarded at the time and the squad lost an All-Ireland Hogan Cup final against St Pat’s of Cavan. Details of next month’s reunion are available from Dan on 086 8497840, Dermot Kelly on 086 811284 or Eugene O’Sullivan on 086 3791359.

DS Robert Stafford screamed "stop staring at me" and slated the 27-year-old in front of his fellow competitors calling him "Mr Attitude" also asking him "are we going clubbing, are we?".

Later speaking on camera, the DS explained why they focused in on Oisin, who is one of 20 well known faces on the popular TV show which will air once a week for a total of seven weeks.

Oisin, who completed a tough sea swim at the start of the programme, explained early on to the camera how he thinks he is "pretty resilient" but doesn't like "being told what to do". However, later during the show viewers saw how one DS picked up Oisin's bottle of aftershave and sprayed it on him multiple times, put social media influencer Tadhg Fleming's boxers on his head and also told him to put on his sunglasses and woolly hat.

By March 2020, just as the pandemic set in, he was promoted to Duty Manager, and despite the disruption, he continued his studies while gathering vital on-thejob experience. His journey reached its latest milestone in June when he passed his Hotel Management course from MTU Tralee with First Class DuringHonours.thethree years on the National Trainee Manager Development Programme for employees of the hotel industry he worked and gained experience in every department of the very busy 99-bedroom four-star International HoLestel. was the face of the International Hotel for many years, and he will be “forever grateful” to the Coyne family who run the town centre hotel. 42 years of dedication to any one establishment, to any one community, requires a huge level of commitment, devotion and loyalty. My lens and I visited many of our national schools over the past week so I seized the opportunity to revisit Holy Cross Mercy National School to chat to principal Ursula Coffey ahead of her retirement.

“Have you any plans for your retirement,” I asked Ursula. “My son Niall lives in Vancouver and is getting married to his fiancee Megan in July of next year, so we are really looking forward to that,” Ursula said. “And where are your other children,” I asked. “Jennifer is married to Lee in Dublin and she works as a medical scientist in Temple Street. My son Fintan is a Garda in Macroom and is married to Laura and they have two girls, Sophie and Stella. My husband Kieran works two days per week still with the diocese and we look forward to celebrating our Ruby wedding anniversary next March, so there’s lots to look forward to MaItrie.”was soon photo time which Ursula considered the ‘worst part’. We made our way to vice principal Anne Lucey’s room, who has also served a lengthy time of 36 years at The Mercy. On the way she told me about how Ursula set up Accord in Killarney, Ireland's leading nationwide agency supporting marriages and relationships, which Ursula had forgotten to mention. This didn’t surprise me at all. I was also informed of her famous brownies, a must at Board of Management meetings, especially enjoyed by Fr Niall Howard. Opting for accompaniment in her retirement portrait, Ursula is pictured with present teachers at The Mercy, Alice O’Donnell Davern and Frances Arthur, all who began their first day in Junior Infants at the school on September 1 1980, the same day Ursula began her lengthy teaching career in our community, educating all at Holy Cross Mercy NS for the past 42 years. Thank you for having me Ursula, the pleasure was mine entirely.

“What has been your proudest moment at The Mercy Ursula?" I asked. “There have been many Marie, but daily it brings me great joy to see happy children learning. It doesn’t matter what country you come from, we are inclusive and encourage creativity. We have a proud catholic heritage with the nuns since 1844 but here at The Mercy we welcome all religions and nationalities. I am grateful to have a superb team with over 50 staff, excluding the preschool, which was originally set up by the nuns in the early '80s to facilitate children who could not attend private pre-schools. They were strong women who saw the need. We have also been blessed with excellent Board of Management teams along the way, who have offered immense support and guidance,” Ursula replied. Ursula was being modest. She herself was a strong woman who saw the need. With prior knowledge, I began to poke a little more. “A friend of mine works at your Autism Unit Ursula. I visited once with my lens - most impressive. That was built under your reign was it?” I asked. “It was built in 2016 with four classes, with one purpose built room. Recently we were granted €4.2 million for a centre of excellence purpose built ASD Unit to up our expertise in that area. The nuns have gifted us the land at the back of the school and we are hopeful to put in an astro turf play area too but we will have to see how the build goes first. The department of education have done a lot in the upkeep of the school but if I won the Lotto in the morning we need a new hall!" Ursula joked. Indeed a strong woman who saw the need I thought, and what a legacy to leave behind.

Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.

“I attended Carysfort College in Dublin after graduating from Coláiste Íde in Dingle," Ursula explained. "From Gneevguilla, Dublin was the most direct route to becoming a teacher. From Rathmore train station, direct to Dublin, it was the simplest route for my mother, who had just started to drive, shortly after my dad passed away when I was just 15. Past principal Sr Carmel (RIP) was a sister of my father's. She was principal at The Mercy from the early '80s until 1991 where Sr Regina took over until 2005. I was the eldest of four siblings and we all went to college in "ThereDublin.are no two days the same in many lines of work Marie but education is forever changing and evolving. Together with Catriona Behan and Catherine Mangan, who were hugely innovative with technology, we began an Erasmus project visiting Ylitornio, Finland, just half an hour away from the Arctic Circle, and frequented Birmingham regularly, where Apple devices changed our methods of teaching forever. Technology was used to differentiate for all needs and gave the ability to be creative making the way forward in communication so relevant. 2007/08 gave way for a massive change in reading and writing and thank God for it as it has seriously benefited every child. Literacy is enormously important for every subject but hugely for maths. Personally I felt there was too much emphasis on paperwork. The children are always and ever the centre of every decision we made at The Mercy NS. I spent 25 years as a teacher, dominantly Sixth Class girls, before becoming principal for a further 17 years,” she said.

Ursula prepares for retirement after 42 years at The Mercy

Most of us will chose one or even two career paths in some shape or form throughout our lives, exploring different avenues and sometimes in opposite directions.

RETIREMENT “How do you feel about retirement Ursula,” I asked. “I don’t like to talk about it much. My life has been The Mercy. My children went to school here and I taught my youngest, Jennifer, in Sixth Class. I remember taking a notion that she would ask me to be her sponsor for her confirmation to which she replied "mum, you will be too busy with all the other children". I had plans to retire a few years ago as my husband Kieran retired as principal from Fossa NS over 10 years ago but when COVID hit, how could I leave such mayhem? There was more work than ever to be done in setting up an education system that worked for the children at home. I had never been so thankful that we had always had the wheels of technology in motion here at The Mercy. The majority of the children were so resilient and bounced back in the gates of the school as if it never happened. This made me very happy."

Motorists are advised to also prepare for traffic disruption during the Worksproject.will commence adjacent to the rear entrance of Dr Croke’s GAA pitches on Arbutus Grove, and will proceed along Arbutus Grove and Drive, through the Park Road roundabout where the new pipe will tie into the existing network on Countess Road. “We are extremely pleased to be replacing this section of trunk main for the community here in Deerpark. Replacing these old and problematic trunk water mains will reduce the drinking water lost by leakage and will bring an all-round improvement to water quality for the community,” Steven Blennerhassett from Irish Water said. “We have been engaging with the residents and aim to complete the works with as little disruption as possible by early December. However, the works may involve some short-term water outages. Our project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48-hours’ notice before any planned water outages. Parking spaces may be temporarily closed to complete works. Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.”

“You can’t beat the excitement of playing in front of a knowledgeable audience like we get at Electric Picnic whenever we play. That sort of an audience inspires us to even greater things. That’s why we can’t wait for next year which will be our fourth,” said Liam.

The late Jamie O'Sullivan who sadly passed away from cancer last year. Walkers who put their best foot forward along the scenic Tomies Wood Trail in Beaufort this summer during an event to commemorate the memory of local man Jamie O’Sullivan were rewarded for their efforts this week when the O’Sullivan family presented €16,295 to the Kerry Hospice Night Nurse Programme.

By Con Dennehy

More than 400 friends, family and community gathered at the scenic location in June for the 'Remembering Jamie' walk, organised by parents Patricia and Simon and his brother Diarmuid, which was an occasion to reminisce, share stories and remember a young man that made an indelible impact during his short and memorable life. A native of Gerah in Beaufort, Jamie lost his brave and dignified battle with cancer in 2021. Due to COVID-19 restrictions at the time, many of his friends and wider community were unable to celebrate his life, his many talents and his ability to touch the lives of so many people in a variety of ways.

Liam O’Connor has already been invited back to perform at next year’s Electric Picnic.

The family currently lives in a quiet house near Listowel with a small gar den and a greenhouse, surrounded by a forest - all that Olena dreamed of. "I have the feeling that someone is car rying me here as if in their arms. In Ire land I constantly feel support from dif ferent people. Miracles often happen here, as soon as I think about some thing, the necessary things appear as if by themselves," Olena tells me. And three months ago their little son Yaroslav was born, and was recently baptised in the church. "Thanks to God, Father George and the extremely talented singer Khrescheny. In a few years, they will sing a magical duet with Yaroslav," Olena wrote on her Facebook page.

The Yershovy sisters, together with their mother and father Olena and Maxim, moved to Ireland in March of this year. It was here that their lit tle brother Yaroslav was born three months ago. Now there are six children in the family. Five of them play music: violin, viola, and cello. The Yershovy family lived in Sevas topol, a city on the shores of the Black Sea in southern Ukraine. Maxim's fa ther was a military naval officer. He was once the best foreign student at the Royal Naval Academy in Britain. Olena's mother used to play music her self, so she encouraged her daughter to play instruments from an early age. Girls learned to play the violin before they could speak. It seemed that they were born already with tools in their hands. Although in reality, behind all achievements there was work, moth er's support and good teachers who developed the children's talents. In 2014, everything changed. Russia annexed Crimea (the southern pen insula) of Ukraine and the family of a military officer were in danger. The Yershovys urgently left their home in Sevastopol and came to Odessa, an other sea city that belongs to Ukraine. Their life had to start over, but the first thing their mother found was a music school for her daughters. The future housing had to meet only one criterait had to be close to the music school. There the girls had up to five music lessons a week. Daniel Hope, a fa mous British violinist of Irish, German and Jewish origin, visited the Odessa school more than once. He played with the Yershovy sisters and gave them However, masterclasses.this year the family had to leave their home again.

Arriving in Ireland, the Yershova sisters had no instruments and sheet music, and could not continue playing. And music for them is life. Once the sisters went for a walk, and when they re turned, there were two violins lying in the yard. Someone found out that the sisters were musicians and brought instruments. Then the rumour about the little musicians spread and peo ple started bringing violins, violas and even a cello for the youngest Sofia. It was a real miracle, now the house of the Yershovy is filled with music and the coziness and feeling of home reigned there again. One day, Ksenia, the eldest daughter, was sent a gift. Opening the package, she saw a viola there and it was just the one that was needed! In the package was a touching note from the relatives of the musician, Miriam Owens, who died of cancer six months ago. Rela tives decided to present the instru ment to a viola player from Ukraine. Now the quintet also have great dresses. The Yershovy sisters are being invited to perform at various festivals. Little by little, the girls have become stars. They gladly respond to all invitations, continue rehearsals and classes. And soon they will all also attend classes at the Cork School of Music. They are ready to walk this path in order to improve their skills. Also, for professional lessons, violinists collect funds which also helps in the purchase of new instruments and weekly trips. See Facebook: alenushka12345, the page of Olena's mother, if you would like to help.

The mother of this family, Olena, is an extremely bright, optimistic woman, she smiles all the time. I think that she is the fire of the family, from which the girls' talent unfolds. My last question takes her back to that day when the girls were playing in the streets of Kil

First, they played the well-known mel ody of the Ukrainian composer Myro slav Skoryk, and secondly, they were dressed in blue and yellow concert dresses - the colours of the Ukrainian flag. Their quintet sounded very wellplayed and professional, the music performed by the little violinists was mesmerising. I watched this video over and over again. Who are these mysteri ous girls? So, I started looking for them. Through Facebook, I found their moth er, Olena Yershov. The girls turned out to be sisters: Ksenia (17), Yevlalia (15), Olena (13), Natalka (10), and Sofiyka We(6). invited the Yershov family to per form in Killarney on the Independence Day of Ukraine on August 24. The girls graced the concert at the ANAM Cul tural Centre, where they performed the national anthem of Ukraine, and many classical, folk and modern pieces by Ukrainian composers. All the locals were especially moved by the national anthem of Ireland which the little mu sicians performed at the end of event.

VIOLINS CANNOT EXIST WITHOUT VIOLINS

A friend sent me a video of five violinist girls playing on the streets of Killarney - the girls were Ukrainian, there was no doubt about that.

"Whylarney.did you decide to play a concert on the street that day?" I ask Olena.

Olena was al ready expecting her sixth child at that time. Fate, and the father's friends, decided where the little one would be born. They helped send the large Yer shovy family to Ireland and surround ed them with care and support. Olena recalls that they had very few things when they arrived in Ireland but people immediately joined in helping. Friends of the family even created a joint chat where they discussed all the current tasks and possible solutions.

The parts for all instruments were writ ten by the eldest daughter, Ksenia, and their mom and the girls rehearsed the entire programme for the concert in literally two weeks.

"First, we wanted to celebrate the birth of our son, and secondly, we donated all the money we collected that day to the purchase of tactical headphones for the Ukrainian military," she said.

The number of distinctions achieved in LCA was also at an all-time high. Such academic success is a testament to their resilience, determination and coping skills which bodes well for their future. "The people of Kerry are always so generous and supportive of the charity and we are humbled by their response to this very worthy cause. We would love for people to join us on November 12 for dinner, ceol agus craic. MC for the night will be our wonderful patrons Elaine Kinsella and Billy Keane so entertainment and a good old story guaranteed. We will have a few surprise guests on the night along with spot prizes and a monster raffle." Drinks reception starts at 6pm followed by dinner at 7pm. Music on the night will be provided by the brilliant Pat Fitz Band followed by a disco with DJ Donal. Tickets will go on sale on September 10 for €70 each.

President Rayla was delighted to meet the club's founding president John O’Shea and she found his talk ‘interesting, informative and it was most encouraging.’ She hopes that many Killarney people will join them at the upcoming events and ensure they are as successful as they were pre-COVID when they last held these events in 2019.

It's not something you'd see every day - a monkey escaping from the zoo and refusing to return. That's what happened on Monday in Ukraine when a chimpanzee escaped from a zoo in Kharkiv, as zookeepers tried everything to make him return. Former UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss faced Queen Elizabeth this week who formerly endorsed her tenure as Prime SixMinister.years ago the people of Britain voted for Brexit and this led to the resignation of David Cameron. Theresa May was next in line, a first to carry the post-Brexit can, but she was forced to resign in May 2019 when she was unable to get her plans through parliament and several votes of no confidence. This paved the way for Boris Johnson's leadership which lasted until the summer of Truss2022.describes herself as “a plain-speaking Yorkshirewoman”, but has plenty of skeletons in the closest that will surely come back to haunt her leadership of Conservative Britain. In a previous political life, as a Lib-Dem she famously hit out against the British Royal Family, questioning their ability to inherit their position as Head of State. Her mother Priscilla was a member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and took a young Liz on "ban the bomb" marches where she has spoken of chanting anti-Margaret Thatcher slogans. In her acceptance speech on Monday night she made no reference to Northern Ireland and it is the Northern Ireland Protocol of the Brexit plan that is causing successive British governments the most amount of grief. “I also want to thank our outgoing leader, my friend, Boris Johnson. Boris, you got Brexit done. You crushed Jeremy Corbyn. You rolled out the vaccine, and you stood up to Vladimir Putin. You are admired from Kyiv to Carlisle,” she said, but the omission of any reference to Northern Ireland has irked Unionists in the Dougprovince.Beattie, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, said: "She has to put time, effort and energy into Northern Ireland, which has been neglected."

Russian President Vladimir Putin is threatening to completely cut off gas and oil supplies to Europe if price caps are imposed by the EU. This week, the Irish government released a series of measures to curb energy use during the winter.

The ‘Reduce Your Use’ campaign includes recommendations like public sector bodies will be required to set temperatures to a guideline of 19 degrees, to turn off heat in office buildings at least one to two hours before the buildings close and to ensure that there is no non-security or safety lighting in use after 8pm. This comes despite energy companies recording record profits. There are calls within the EU for price caps in an attempt to stem the flow of funds into the Krem"Welin. will not supply gas, oil, coal, heating oil – we will not supply anything," the Russian president said. "Will there be any political decisions that contradict the contracts? Yes, we won’t fulfil them. We will not supply anything at all if it contradicts our interests." He added that Germany and Poland were to blame for the Nord Stream 1 pipeline not being operational and that Ukraine and Poland decided on their own to switch off other gas routes into Europe.

“When I applied for my Irish [real estate] licence, I had 28 attachments on the application,” she adds. Her licence arrived on Christmas Eve last “Iyear.did not need any more presents or parties last Christmas,” she said. Once she had identified 18 New Street as a suitable business location she and her carpenter husband and a local engineer set about readying the premises for its new “Therole.engineer was a blessing, he introduced me to a local builder who is behind a new nine-house development on Ross Road,” she added. “That was my first client, he said he likes what I do and that I offer a fresh set of eyes on the property Onemarket.”ofthe key differences between the Irish and Canadian markets is that real estate agents in Canada act either on behalf of the buyer or seller where here in Ireland new buyers face the daunting task of facing an agent on their own. “As I am new to Ireland I feel I can offer that service too, everything is new to me so I can really see everything from the buyer's point of view too.”

After a two and a half year hiatus, Oíche Chiarraí, the flagship event of the Kerry Association in Dublin, finally took place in The Green Isle Hotel in Dublin on Saturday night.

Listowel native Patricia Sheahan qualified as a doctor in 1989 and has since made a significant contribution to Kerry life. She has worked as the palliative medicine consultant in Kerry for the past 20 years. Alongside Kerry Hospice Foundation, she has helped develop a fully integrated palliative care service for the people of Kerry. She has touched the lives of most families in the county and those families, some of whom were in attendance on Saturday, attest to her extraordinary sensitivity and compassion and going above and beyond the call of duty. She provides a special comfort at such a very difficult and emotional time and that’s something that the families of those in her care never forget.

O’Callaghan Town and Country Real Estate was set up by Canadian Sherry O’Callaghan just over a month ago. Operating from a prime location on New St one of the town’s newest businesses is already making a mark. Sherry and her Millstreet husband arrived here last autumn after Patrick decided the time was right to move back to Ireland after over 10 years at the other side of the Atlantic. She has over 12 years’ experience in the Canadian real estate business and brought that wealth of knowledge with her when she joined her husband in Millstreet late last year. How did a woman from Newfoundland met a man from North Cork? “Simple, I sold him a house,” she said. Her experience includes several qualifications and diplomas in areas as diverse as real estate law, ethics and marketing.

Other exemptions from Capital Gains Tax include gains from:

This means it’s all the more important to encourage motor development in children at an early stage, since this can also have a positive impact on the development of mental fitness. Collaboration among parents, schools and communities is very important when it comes to creating a comprehensive and appropriate range of possibilities. Strength and conditioning is an interesting research subject affecting both physical and psychological well-being, including forming a positive body image, relieving depression, and increasing life satisfaction. In addition, there is evidence that physical activity promotes intelligence and brain development. Intelligence can be defined as: “the aggregate or global capacity of the individual to act purposefully, to think rationally, and to deal effectively with his/her environment” - (Wechsler d: the measurement of adult intelligence. Baltimore: Williams and Wilkins, 1939) If you would like your child to learn how to exercise in the gym, lift weights and understand their body better, contact Kayleigh and Tommy, our Activate youth coaches today by emailing: youths@activate.ie.

Promoting children’s motor skills at an early stage is important. Movement on a regular basis keeps kids healthy and fit for school. The benefits of fitness have been demonstrated in numerous studies. A research team at the University of Munich has found proof of the correlation between physical fitness, concentration and health-related quality of life for school pupils. The study involved 3,285 girls and 3,248 boys. The key criteria were physical strength and endurance, the ability to concentrate and health-related quality of Thelife.results of the study show: the higher the level of children’s physical fitness, the better they can concentrate and the higher their health-related quality of life. While the boys did better on the fitness tests, the girls performed better in terms of concentration and quality of life valAtues.the same time, in all tests for physical fitness overweight and obese children had significantly poorer results than underweight children and children with normal body weight. Obese children also had significantly poorer values for health-related quality of life on the whole, physical well-being, self-esteem as well as well-being in friendships and at school.

Transfers of assets between spouses and civil partners are exempt from Capital Gains Tax. Transfers of assets between spouses and civil partners who are separated are exempt from Capital Gains Tax if they are made under a Separation Agreement or a court order. The transfer of a site from parent to child is exempt if it is to build the child’s principal private residence but the land must be less than one acre and have a value of €500,000 or less. There is no Capital Gains Tax on assets that are passed on death. The assets are treated as if the person who died got the assets at the same value they have on the date of death. WHEN TO PAY CGT

HOW TO PAY CAPITAL GAINS TAX

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Capital Gains Tax

The tax year is divided into two periods:

• An ‘initial period’ from January 1 to November 30 • A ‘later period’ from December 1 to December 31 For disposals in the initial period CGT payments are due by December 15 in the same tax year. CGT for disposals in the later period are due by January 31 in the following tax year. For example, if you dispose of an asset in the period January to November 2022 you must pay the Capital Gains Tax due to Revenue before December 15 2022. If you dispose of an asset in December 2022, the Capital Gains Tax will be due on January 31 2023.

You dispose of an asset when you sell it, give it as a gift, exchange it or get compensation or insurance for it. 9.09.2022

WELL-BEING

If you are registered for CGT, you must pay your CGT online using Revenue Online Service (ROS) or myAccount. If you are not registered for CGT, you must register for CGT and then make a payment using ROS or myAccount.

If you make a profit or gain when you dispose of an asset, you are liable to pay Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on the chargeable gain. The chargeable gain is usually the difference between the price you paid for the asset and the price you disposed of it for. You can deduct allowable expenses such as the cost of acquiring and disposing of the asset. When you dispose of an asset, you must file a tax return for CGT by October 31 of the following year. Although you may file your return the following year, you must pay the Capital Gains Tax in the same year as you dispose of the asset, unless the disposal is in December.

At the Hazewinkel lake venue in the north of the country, Muckross rower Niamh Coffey was making her international rowing debut having been selected to row for Ireland just two weeks earlier during a final water trial. Her qualification however was the culmination of years of dedicated training both on land and water and followed her participation in several rounds of trials over the past rowing year.

MAKING HER MARK On Saturday last, Niamh made her mark in the first of three heats with an impressive win over scullers from Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia and Finland. This saw her qualify directly from the A/B semi-finals on Sunday morning with tough competition waiting from the competing heat races. Toning tables are suitable for all ages, shapes and sizes and are designed to improve health and rehabilitation procedures. They can be used also in passive active movements in a sitting or lying position and are a great form of stretching, helping to lengthen and strengthen your muscle groups, from core, arms, legs etc. Exercising in the toning tables contributes to the restoration of the motor functions, strengthens muscles, help reduce weight and improve bone density without the exhausting workouts. The operating principle of toning tables is based on recurring movements of the movable part of the table. These drive the muscles in different parts of the body causing targeted joints to work. The fixed part of the table is used for support. All exercises are carried out either sitting or lying, which makes it possible to avoid negative impact on the spine. The machines work like a double positive action and create alternating contractions of opposing muscle groups. Our aim is to help balance, mobility, inch loss and weight loss when combined with a calorie-controlled diet, in a safe environment. If you haven't done any form of exercise and are a little worried starting, these are ideal to get you going and feel confident about exercising again. Toning tables are suitable for both men and women, call Jill on 064 6632966.

There are still opportunities to apply for colleges in the UK and Europe. The UCAS Clearing system is open until October 18 which allows students to apply for vacant college places in the UK. See www.ucas.com for details. Applications are still open for some colleges and universities in Europe, where entry requirements are often lower than similar options here in Ireland. See www. eunicas.ie and www.medicalpoland.ie for more details.

There are over 150 direct entry courses to various colleges across Ireland in a variety of areas of study and duration. These can be researched by using the Course Finder facility on www.careersportal.ie.

There are lots of options outside of CAO

DIRECT ENTRY COURSES

REPEATING OR TAKING

If you are not happy with your offer or not interested in going onto Higher Education, you have lots of options which are not based on CAO points. There have never been so many ways for students to realise their potential on leaving secondary school.

Colleges of Further Education (FE) are still accepting applications for courses in a huge variety of subject areas including business, ICT, social care, childcare, law, beauty therapy, art and design, applied science, healthcare, law, engineering, multimedia, sport and much more. These courses provide students with QQI FET/FETAC qualifications which allow them to progress onto colleges and universities here in Ireland, the UK and Europe. The €200 fee to apply for PLCs was abolished in Budget 2022. To check out the full range of PLC courses available and to apply, check out www.fetchcourses. ie. For those who are interested in progression routes onto Higher Education in Ireland, take a look at QQI-FET Applicant section of www.cao.ie.

Deciding to repeat the Leaving Cert can be a difficult decision but for those who feel they can do better second time around it is well worth considering as a lot of the course content is already covered so it can make it easier to manage time and study a little better second time around, thus performing better in exams. Taking a year out is also worth considering to learn a new skill such as how to drive, earning some money, travelling, volunteering, getting some work experience, completing a short course and taking some more time to reflect in what pathway they are interested in taking at this point.

The National Parents Council Post Primary helpline 1800 265 165, will be open from 2pm to 8pm until September 14, where qualified guidance counsellors are on hand to answer queries from students, parents and guardians. There is also lots of helpful information on www.careersportal.ie and www. qualifax.ie.

A teenager finds a photo of himself on a website displaying photos of missing children and realises his parents are not his real family. He tries to find out his true identity, and discovers he was taken for a purpose and that shadowy agents are on his trail. Action thriller, starring Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Alfred Molina and Sigourney Weaver. From Oscar-nominated director Dan Krauss (Extremis, The Kill Team), The Anthrax Attacks tells the story of the 2001 anthrax attacks on the United States and one of the largest and most complex FBI investigations in the history of law enforcement. Five Americans were killed and at least 17 fell ill in what became one of the worst biological attacks in US history, which followed one week after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Unfolding across America and beyond, it’s an incredible scientific tale of deadly poison, obsession, and paranoia, all told against the backdrop of the war on terror. Using a combination of interviews and scripted reenactments based on emails and FBI field notes, the documentary feature also shares shocking and heartbreaking stories from investigators, survivors and the families of those who were infected. Starring Clark Gregg as Dr Bruce Ivins, The Anthrax Attacks is a BBC Studios Production.

To mark 100 years of An Garda Síochána, a new book, ‘The Guardians, 100 Years of An Garda Síochána 19222022’, was launched in Finglas Garda Station on Monday by Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris. ‘The Guardians’ is a unique collection of personal stories from retired and serving Garda personnel, accounts from historians and academics, and historical and contemporary photographs charting An Garda Síochána’s development from 1922 to 2022. ‘The Guardians’ takes readers from the first generation of the Civic Guard/Garda Síochána, through the 1950s and 1960s, and up to the modern policing service provided in 21st-century Ireland. The book explores challenges, both past and present, as well as some of the key events in An Garda Síochána’s history. Topics range from women in An Garda Síochána to policing during The Troubles to the success of CAB, as well as many other key moments of the past century that have affected not only our police service but modern Ireland. It is now on sale in bookstores nationwide.

An elderly man reads a love story to a woman in a nursing home, from an old notebook full of sentimental scribblings about a passionate young couple whose fledgling affair is smothered almost before it has begun. Romantic drama, starring Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, Gena Rowlands and James Garner.

The Afghan Whigs are set to release their first studio album in five years, 'How Do You Burn?', today (Friday). It's the ninth studio album from The Afghan Whigs, and finds the band in peak form, making the most vaulting and thrilling music of their lives. The album is virile, ready-for-action, and finds frontman Greg Dulli as swaggering, enigmatic and darkly charismatic as ever, and singing up a storm. The album reaches corners of sound that, 26 years after the band’s inception, find them at an apex. Referencing Warren Zevon, Prince, and Zeppelin all while plugging in to the soul and R&B influences that have always set them apart, The Afghan Whigs are at a precipice of greatness. “I’m beginning to see there are a million places we can go," Dulli said. "I feel virile, ready for action, and I want to keep stalking greatness.”

The assumption that the improving inflation figures we saw in early August would allow the Fed to take their foot off the gas pushed markets higher, but these notions were swiftly put to bed by the Fed, killing the market momentum in the Instead, process.investors are now gripped by fears of the aggressive policy tightening to So,come.where does that leave us? In short, it leaves us in the most prolonged bear market since the Great Financial Crisis. I have spoken about this before, but it bears repeating. The unbridled support that fuelled previous recoveries is no more. The rescue team that saved us from the burning building in recent years has now turned against us. Like some sort of arson-obsessed firefighter, the Fed has turned to the dark side, seeking lower prices, lower valuations and more subdued economic activity in an effort to tame inflation.

Expectations need to be managed

JUST AS PAINFUL Markets are never defined as good or bad - they are judged merely as better or Whatworse.has already happened holds far less weight than what’s about to hapWithpen. market conditions worsening, the fact that they are retreating from an unsustainable level of success bears little significance for investors suffering through the pain in real-time. For example, a 7% drop in property prices would undoubtedly be met with resounding disdain from property owners despite house prices jumping 40% in the past 18 months. Before the most recent real estate rally, investors would have bitten your hand off for a 30% increase in their property value in under two years, but you can never view the two in isolation. Psychologically, the previous unrealised gains have already been locked in. Who wants 30% when 40% was just on the table? The pain of loss has now been anchored to the new highs.

Remove keys from locked doors and windows and put them in a safe place. Valuables (cash, jewellery etc.), which can be seen from outside, are tempting targets for burglars, so keep them out of sight.

Three weeks of negative market numbers have ensured the positive rally we experienced to mid-August is now but a distant memory.

Burglary rates have increased considerably as pandemic restrictions were lifted and workers returned to the workplace.

NOTHING ELSE WILL DO More importantly, it’s never how far something has fallen but the uncertainty around how further it could fall that gnaws at the mind of investors. So, while a reprieve from some of the most supportive market conditions in history may seem reasonable, investors will undoubtedly feel every bit of the pain along the way, regardless of the good times they experience to get here. The short-term adjustments are never easy, but the long-term trend rewards those willing to take the pain.

Fitting and using good quality locks such as levered deadlocks on your doors will make it harder for burglars to barge through them. You should also ensure all ground floor windows have locks.

HIDEOUTKEYS/VALUABLESOFSIGHT

Michael O’Connor CFA is an investment consultant based in the Cayman Islands with a decade of experience within the financial industry.

The S&P 500 has not been within 5% of its all-time high for the past 95 days, the longest period since 2013.

The Nasdaq 100 has now spent 33 weeks below its 40-week moving average, the longest period on record. There is no denying the downtrend we are in and waiting around for the cavalry to arrive is no longer a justifiable investment Slowerplan.growth is still growth, but expectations need to be managed.

USE LEVERED DEADLOCKS

These can act as a deterrent and may ward off burglars. When choosing a home alarm system, look for one which is all the following: 1. Your home’s alarm should be easy to see, as it will ward off burglars 2. A loud alarm will scare off burglars’ mid-break-in, while a fake or ‘dummy’ alarm won’t 3. Monitored alarms will allow the police to respond to an alarm event much more quickly 4. Household alarm systems that are wireless are harder to tamper with and continue to work during power outages

Valuable items such as bikes and power tools should be locked securely in a garden shed or outbuilding when not in use. Also, a well-lit garden can deter would-be burglars as it stops them from sneaking around unseen. Most insurers will offer a discount if your house has a monitored alarm, however you must ensure that it is turned on and in working order each time you leave the house. John Healy of Healy Insurances.

MARKET OUTLOOK

As such, the probability of a fast recovery fades dramatically. Investors got used to spending a lot of time near all-time highs over the last decade, but the landscape is changing.

Taking all factors into account however is it critical that housing supply needs to continue to increase in order to moderate house price increases and enhance affordability in the market.” Residential property prices increased by just over 14% in the year to June, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO), as the supply of properties continued to lag “Thedemand.fundamental driver of the significant increase in average residential property prices in Ireland in recent years has been the lack of supply of new homes as opposed to lending growth, which was observed in mid-2000s," Ali Uğur, Chief Economist, Banking & Payments Federation Ireland, said.

A separate planning permission for a development of 30 units in Ballycasheen, Killarney, was overturned by the Bord earlier this year. With little new home development on the horizon for Killarney being the net result, where are our next generation to Alive?shortage of available properties for sale, both new build and second hand, in the Killarney market has led to spiralling house prices. Now with no major increased supply expected in the short to medium term, prices can be expected to remain strong, despite forecasted interest rate increases.

With planning permissions being overturned by An Bord Pleanála in the local news this week, it is interesting to note that it is estimated in excess of 50,000 housing units could be completed in the country in the two years to the end of 2023, according to the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI). In its latest Housing Market Monitor, the BPFI said that it could help meet the demand for housing which is being driven by employment growth and rising inEstimatescomes. from various bodies say the industry needs to be completing between around 30,000 and 35,000 housing units per year to keep pace with demand and projected population increases. He referenced Central Bank figures which showed that as of the end of 2021, over 45% of mortgage lending had been issued under lending rules introduced by the regulator in 2015 which restricted lending based on income and the value of the property. With a stacked squad that includes the best players from Fossa, Kilcummin, Glenflesk, Rathmore, Listry, Gneeveguilla, Firies and now Legion, the 2019 and 2020 champions are odds-on favourites to recapture the Bishop Moynihan Cup this time around. And fans clearly believe that those odds are justified as roughly five out of six respondents say the men from the East will do the business. Kingpins of the 2010s Dr Crokes have been tipped to win by 4% of those surveyed. Last year’s beaten finalists Kerins O’Rahillys (2.2%) were the only other team to receive more than 2% of the Ifvote.there is to be an upset, could it come in the guise of a small club from rural south Kerry? Around 28% of readers have singled out Templenoe as the championship’s dark horses. The club that gifted Kerry with the Spillanes have already reached the final of this season’s Club Championship and it appears as though their underdog story has resonated with fans across the county. When asked which team they will be shouting for if their own club/district doesn’t win the Kerry SFC, 35% of supporters said they’ll be backing TempleRoughlynoe. 9% of neutrals opted for Rahillys with East Kerry and Spa close behind. This year’s County Championship will feature a group phase for the first time ever with the top two from each fourteam pool advancing to the quarter-finals. Fans are anticipating that the following teams will qualify safely from their respective groups: Dr Crokes and Kenmare Shamrocks; East Kerry and Dingle; Austin Stacks and Mid Kerry; Templenoe and South Kerry. If that forecast does, indeed, come to pass, it will mean that last year’s beaten finalists, Kerins O’Rahillys, and another seeded team, St Brendan’s, will be eliminated at the first hurdle. Rahillys will be missing influential players Cormac Coffey and Jack Savage, both of whom have emigrated to the Middle East. Brendan’s, meanwhile, are without their Na Gaeil players this year following the Killeen club’s promotion to senior. Two divisional teams from North Kerry could find the going tough if our readers expect Kerry to prevail, survey carried out by the Killarney Advertiser has found that a whopping 84% of our readers are expecting East Kerry to the 2022 Kerry Senior Football Championship. OPINION WEEKLY SPORT 70

Photo: Matt Browne/Sportsfile.

Jack’s move a savage blow for championship

First things first: fair play to the man and good luck to him. The way things are going in this country at the minute, I think we can all agree that he has the right idea in getting as far away as possible, for a while at least. His departure is a major setback for his club, Kerins O’Rahillys, however – and it could well have a knock-on effect for the Kerry Senior Football Championship as a whole. You see, Rahillys’ first match is against the pre-tournament favourites, East Kerry. With Savage, who is their only current intercounty forward and their scorer-inchief, Rahillys would have some hope. Without him, it frankly becomes difficult to see how last year’s beaten finalists are going to get enough points on the board to cause an upset. The fact that this is East Kerry’s first game is significant. Their group is difficult on paper – the Group of Death according to some of us in the media – so there absolutely exists a timeline where they don’t even advance to the next round, let alone reach the final and claim their third title in four years. But in this timeline they more than likely start slowly, as district teams sometimes do, and the clubs around them capitalise on momentum they have already gathered pre-County Championship. Rahillys have some of that momentum having safely navigated their way through the Club Championship and into October’s final, but without Savage and Cormac Coffey (who has also moved abroad for work), their hand is weakEastened.Kerry are stacked. First of all they have the Footballer of the Year in waiting and his brother, who is set to pick up his second All-Star in a row. Add to that the best of the rest from some very decent intermediate clubs including, for the first time in a long time, the Killarney Legion, and you’re looking at a really formidable panel of players. All told, there are upwards of 16 current or former county men potentially available to them this season. Can they be caught? Yes. Will they be caught, especially if they start well and gather momentum? Maybe not. The new format – group and knockout – will benefit the district sides in the long run as it will guarantee them more games, although I’m not sure if any of them will challenge East Kerry in a meaningful way this time around. Despite their spotty form this season, the most serious competition could well come from the top club teams, i.e. Dr Crokes and Austin Stacks. Stacks were quite poor, I thought, against Crokes in the final group game in the Club Championship. Defeat there leaves the reigning champs facing into a relegation playoff against Kenmare, unless they reach the final of the Kerry SFC, that is. It’s often wheeled out as an excuse for an underperforming team but Crokes really are in transition at the moment. Their starting 15 is as young as it has been in a very long time; new manager Brian McMahon is very evidently phasing out some of the older guys and blooding younger players in the white heat of the Therechampionship.istalent there – I like what I’ve seen of Neil O’Shea, Evan Looney and Cian McMahon – but the reality of the situation is that the veteran players whose roles are now changing are some of the best players the club has ever produced. Kieran O’Leary, Mike Moloney, Daithí Casey, Johnny Buckley… Guys like that aren’t easily replaced. It will take time, but even so they still have one of the strongest squads in the county. Shane Murphy, Fionn Fitzgerald, Gavin White, Mark O’Shea, David Shaw, Micheál Burns and Tony Brosnan would probably start for any team in Kerry, and for that reason they have to be considered serious challengers. Don’t sleep on Templenoe, either. They really impressed during the Club Championship and with four Kerry seniors in their ranks, they are more than capable of going deep into the competition. It is hard to look beyond East Kerry, though. They may be in the Group of Death but they appear to be the ones wielding the scythe. When Jack Savage emigrated to Dubai this past week, the landscape of Kerry club football shifted every so slightly on its axis.

Well done to the Fossa boys and managers and thanks to Kilcummin for making the trip to Fossa U11 BOYS: Another fantastic performance by our Under 11 Boys in Round 2 of the East Kerry League at home to Glenflesk, it was our 3rd time playing Glenflesk this Summer and our boys got off to a very nervy start this time conceding 2 early goals to trail by 6 points after the 1st quarter. Fossa came out of their shells after that, to play some wonderful football. In a very tense final quarter the boys held out to secure a 2 point win on a score line of 5-7 to 5-5. Thanks to our own Ted O'Gorman who refereed the game very fairly throughout.

LADIES UPDATE: The U14 Green team had a titanic battle with Beaufort in Direen last Friday evening in a game finished in an incessant downpour. But that didn't take away from the quality of the fare as both teams gave their all. The Girls performance in the first half ,against a team who operated a couple of divisions higher in the County League, was superb but the Mid Kerry side clawed it back in the second half to earn a draw. The next round of the East Kerry League sees us travel to Glenflesk. Our U14 girls ‘white’ team opened their East Kerry league campaign as Currow were the visitors to a wet and windy Direen. In a real game of two halves the girls built up a healthy first half lead. Of course Currow had the advantage of the elements in the second half and they battled hard to close the deficit but the home side held on for the win. Well done to both teams who served up a very entertaining game in extremely challenging conditions. Final score - Killarney Legion 8-5 Currow 3-14.

SHANE COURTNEY MEMORIAL GOLF CLASSIC: Due to weather conditions last Saturday, we unfortunately have to postpone our golf classic. We will inform you when reschedule date asap. Thank you for your continuous support.

JUVENILE RESULTS: Our U11s took part in the Milltown/Castlemaine Gaa Club Blitz today in support of the local GAA 4 All group on Sunday 4. After playing Ballymacelligott, Austin Stacks and Dr Crokes in the group stage we finished in second position after 2 wins and a defeat. In the semi-final we faced St Michaels Foilmore where a win brought us to play John Mitchels in the Final. Unfortunately John Mitchels GAA were just too strong for us on the day. Round three of the U13 East Kerry League Keel/ Listry visited Pairc Eamonn on Sunday.

O’Sullivans Park v Laune Rangers. Please come and support.

Dr Crokes GAA NORTH KERRY SHC QUARTER FINAL: Dr Crokes 2-14 Crotta O’Neills 1-19. On Monday last, with little wind and summer sunshine, we were level heading into the halftime break, 1-6 to 0-9 points in Dromakee. The Crokes goal came midway through the first half with a lovely finish from Jack Lenihan. Other points for Crokes came from Tom Doyle, a couple from Jack while Mark Heffernan was accurate as ever from the dead ball. A few fine scores from Crotta in the early stages of the second half has us trailing by 4 at one point, but frees from Mark Heffernan and a great strike by Mike Milner had us right back in the game. Some outstanding defensive work from Stephen Foley, Cathal White and James Murphy meant we kept the Crotta attack at bay for the majority of the second half. A fantastic save from goalkeeper Conor Bohane, was capitalised on as we went up the field where substitute Charlie Keating broke past the Crotta defence and buried a lovely goal into the top corner to give Crokes a two point lead. Unfortunately the lead was relinquished late on with Shane Nolan frees plus a goal as the clock struck the 60 minute mark. We trailed by 2 going in to stoppage time. A goal was our only option and some great defending by our opponents denied us an opportunity to win at the end. Our North Kerry Championship has come to an end, having seen us knock Lixnaw out in the earlier round. The year is far from over as the seniors will have will have another chance of silverware in the South Kerry Championship. Our juniors have the South Kerry League to look forward to while the quarter final of the County Junior Hurling Championship is also to come.

A great presence on our Grounds Committee for many years as well as a religious daily 2pm Fourball player in his playing days with the late Dan O'Leary, the late James Horan, Donal O'Mahony and Tim Falvey amongst his many playing partners. Skip did amazing work on the course in clearing out places no one else would think of and he was a strong supporter of all club competitions as well as being a great proponent of our activities around the town. His wit and charm was cherished by all who knew him. To his wife Patricia, sisters Eileen Switzer and Sheila O'Donoghue, his daughters, sons and extended family we offer our deepest condolences. NA NÓG: After what happened in Roscommon in the last couple of days it’s time to take notice. Abuse of any kind towards officials, and particularly at underage level is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We, in Kerry, pride ourselves in our sporting behaviour but lets not be kidding ourselves, verbal and other abuse of officials is still widespread within our games at all codes, grades and genders in the county. It is simply not good enough. As a board we have a responsibility to call it out and deal with it accordingly but we can only do so much. It is down to clubs as well to call it out if they see it. We can be passionate about our games but we can also be respectful and have some common sense. Remember, no referees means no games. Hopefully this might make everyone think a little.

Muckross Rowing Club EUROPEAN U23 ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Congratulations to Niamh Coffey, winner of the B Final for Ireland in the Lightweight Womens Single at the European U23 Rowing Championships in Hazewinkel, Belgium last weekend. The result ranks Niamh an impressive 7th place in Europe, in her first international regatta. The club is very proud of Niamh’s achievement, which builds on the success she has enjoyed closer to home with national championship wins in 2021 and 2022. The result in Belgium completes another highly successful rowing season for 2022, however it will be a short lived break for Niamh as the training and trial cycle for 2023 soon gets underway along with the return to college this KILLARNEYmonth.REGATTA:

ONSHIPS: Best of luck to all our crews competing this weekend in the Irish Offshore Rowing Championships in Wicklow town. The club will compete in the Mens Open Quad, Double, Single and Junior Quad categories. The event will also bring the curtain down on the club’s rowing season for 2021/22 with the new rowing year 2022/23 already getting underway.

Once again, high winds conspired to seal the fate of Killarney Regatta which was cancelled last weekend for the second time this year. It was especially bad luck for the organisers as the weather has been otherwise favourable in recent weeks though other regatta fixtures meant it was not possible to run the historic Killarney contest any IRISHearlier.OFFSHORE
