Construction will begin on a new 130-bed nursing home in Killarney before the Christmas break.
In what is a double boost for Killarney, the new Community Nursing Unit will be built on the grounds St Finan’s Hospital and while the new build is not an overall solution to the site that is vacant since 2012, it is a step in the right direction. The Killarney project is one of seven announced this week by the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly TD and the Minister for Mental Health and Older Persons, Mary Butler TD.
They have announced that the seven Community Nursing Units will be built to HIQA standards and will be delivered as a Public Private Partnership.
The Killarney unit will be made up of a number of 25-bed households including single and twin bedrooms en-suite.
Three 10-bed dementia specific rooms are included in the Killarney project.
In addition, shared areas and therapy spaces are included with facilities such as a family overnight stay room, clinical treatment rooms, physiotherapy and occupational therapy rooms and hairdressers’ rooms.
“This is an exciting, state-of-the-art development for older people and their families. It represents a significant part of the HIQA programme, and the mix
of long and short-term beds will enable a person-centred approach to support older people's quality of life,” said Minister Donnelly.
“Awarding this contract will see the immediate commencement of construction on five of these sites, and the remaining two in the first quarter of 2023, with construction at all sites to be com-
pleted by 2024.”
Construction on five of the facilities will commence before Christmas, these include Ardee, Clonmel, Killarney, St Finbarr's - Cork and Thomastown, and the remaining two, Athlone and Midleton, by early 2023. All facilities are expected to have construction completed by the end of 2024.
Jessie Buckley is to be honoured at next year's Oscar Wilde Awards in California.
The annual awards ceremony is held by the US-Ireland Alliance to celebrate the contribution Ireland makes to film, television, and music.
Buckley joins fellow Irish actress, Tipperary’s Kerry Condon as 2023 Oscar Wilde Awards nominees.
“When Jessie started her career, Andrew Lloyd Webber said that Jessie, is ‘an extraordinary artist. She
must not be allowed to be meddled with.’ Her incredible, authentic performances show that she hasn’t been,” said Trina Vargo, president of the US-Ireland Alliance.
The Oscar Wilde Awards take place in March in the run up to the Academy Awards.
Both Buckley and Condon are being tipped for Oscar nominees next year.
Buckley is in line for her award following her performance in ‘Woman Talking’ while Condon’s role in ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ is also tipped for an award.
A lucky Killarney punter got an early Christmas present when they scooped €50,000 in the EuroMillions ‘Ireland Only Raffle'.
The winning ticket, sold in the Lidl supermarket on the Tralee road, was valid for Tuesday night’s special draw.
The Killarney winner was one of 10 who each secured the €50,000 windfall.
“The National Lottery can reveal that three players in Dublin, three players in Cork and one player in Kerry, Roscommon, Kildare and Wexford all scooped the special raffle prize which was the seventh of 12 draws in the National Lottery’s ’12 Draws of Christmas’ promotion,” said a National Lottery statement.

Meanwhile, a player in Belgium scooped the EuroMillions Jackpot prize worth an astonishing €142,897,164.
AWARDS: Jessie Buckley in ‘Woman Talking’The temporary closure of Plunkett St to vehicular traffic has been extended by another 12 months.
The closure was revealed by the Killarney Advertiser last month and this week Kerry County Council has started its public consultation into the closure.
The town centre street was fully pedestrianised to allow food businesses to serve meals outside and to facilitate social distancing during COVID-19.
Other measures included the widening of footpaths on New St and High St.
The school’s ‘Magical Musical Experience’ took place at Fossa Community Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
Tuesday was the final rehearsal day at the school and Hollywood A-lister Michael Fassbender made a surprise visit to his former primary school to pass on tips and advice to the pupils ahead of their opening concert later that day.
The concert was a joint-venture between the school and The MACademy Performing Arts School.
Teaching staff from both Fossa National School and The MACademy worked closely for the last few weeks to prepare for the Christmas concert.
Deputy Principal Rosemary Moynihan was able to keep Fassbender’s appear-
ance a secret until all 35 teaching staff and the pupils were in the assembly hall preparing for final rehearsals.
“He was a amazing, he chatted to everyone and allowed them time to speak and he listened to what they had to say,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.
“He give plenty of time to children in the Autistic Unit too. He listened to the rehearsals and sat down and sang Christmas songs with the children. It was beautiful. There was already an air of excitement in the school ahead of the concert but Michael brough the excitement to another crescendo.”
Mrs Moynihan paid tribute to the teaching staff and parents who worked so hard over the last few weeks to get the concert off the ground.
The current temporary closing of roads order expires on December 31 but will now be extended to the same date next year.
The purpose of this new closure is to examine the success or failure of several measures that were brought in during the pandemic to allow social distancing on the town’s streets.
“This involved the creation of buildouts to accommodate Outdoor Dining and the creation of public realm areas, which the closure of Plunkett Street facilitated. Feedback from businesses in particular has been very positive, allowing enhanced offerings to the public who have also voiced their support for these developments in the town,” said Angela McAllen, Killarney Municipal District Manager, said at the November KMD meeting. However, Cllr Donal Grady believes that several of these ‘buildouts’ need to be decommissioned as they are not being used for their designated purpose and

are taking up car parking spaces in the town centre.
“Any place that is not being utilised needs to be turned back into parking spaces,” he told the Killarney Advertiser this week. He added that the lack of parking "is driving people out of town".
Ms McAllen said the Council would look at what areas are being used to their full potential and their future will be decided during the latest closure’s term.
Town centre regeneration is set to commence next year under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF).

I hope this funding assists in making them even better in the provision of services to people all across Kerry,” Deputy Griffin said.
“I also want to congratulate the successful projects and to thank them for the vital work they do in providing services in their local communities. This funding will deliver high quality capital projects for community facilities that bring benefit to the local community.”

It was no small project planting 2,000 bulbs but that's exactly what dedicated students did this week to help with the town's biodiversity plans.
Transition Years from Killarney’s three secondary schools St Brigid’s, Killarney Community College and St Brendan’s College, planted the bulbs in a joint initiative with Killarney Lions Club supported by Kerry County Council in Maurice O’Donoghue Park near the River Flesk just outside town.
The project is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of biodiversity, and encouraging everyone to think about how they could contribute to Killarney’s world-famous natural heritage. It is the third time that Killarney Lions Club and Kerry County Council have collaborated on an environmental project in the Killarney area.
“We know how much work our local schools are putting in to raise environmental awareness and saw a good opportunity to work with them and take action in a way that benefits everyone in the community," President of Killarney Lions Club, Denis Doolan, said.
"It was also great to work with Kerry County Council again, whose support has been fantastic, and we are all looking forward to seeing the results of our efforts in spring.”
Matthew Farrell, Killarney Municipal District Officer at Kerry County Council, added “the value of this project goes well beyond the planting of 2,000 bulbs, which will really enhance the visual appeal of the town, but adds to the biodiversity and environmental efforts of Kerry County Council and other stakeholders across Killarney and the county".
"Well done to all involved, especially the students, for taking on this work for the benefit of all.”
With great fondness and a few tears, Frankie Coyne led the team at the International Hotel this week in a tribute to Patricia O’Doherty.
The popular waitress is celebrating 40 years’ service at Killarney’s favourite family-owned hotel.
Frankie, being the only individual that pre-dates Patricia at the International Hotel, recalled the story of Patricia joining the team back in 1982 when her mother-in-law Kathleen O’Doherty, herself a great stalwarth in the dining room at the International, introduced her brand new daughter-in-law as a young chef to then manager Liam Kelly.
However, after a few weeks, and having decided it was a little hot in the kitchen for her liking, Patricia convinced Liam that she had plenty of waitressing experience and she would love a move to the dining room!
Notwithstanding this little white lie, Patricia was a brilliant addition and over the years since then, has led the team with great patience and calmness, two of her best qualities!
During her tenure, two of Patricia’s children, Keith and Carla joined her at the International making it a family af-
fair and Patricia still works three days a week serving breakfast and says that she just loves meeting guests old and new, and of course loves working alongside the team who have become family over the years.
A special mention was given to John Thompson who Patricia says is surely not long behind her in length of service and when his time comes, Patricia will be the first to congratulate him too!
Frankie spoke a little about the changes in the hotel over the years since she and her late husband Sean bought the hotel in 1976 with 143 bedrooms musing how many guests Patricia and her team have fed over all those years.
On her own behalf, and on behalf of those from the International Hotel who are no longer with us, she gave sincere thanks to Patricia for all the years so far, and the many more years to come!
Her lovely words of thanks to Patricia and the whole team for making the International Hotel what it is ensured there was hardly a dry eye in the room.
One door closes, another one opens - that is the mantra that local business man Brian Bowler is taking now.
When business circumstances changed this time last year, he decided to put all his energy into his true calling in life – the performing arts.
The first door that opened for him was the arrival of Michael Fassbender’s arts school on New Street.
He was one of the first to enrol at the West End School of the Arts and is about to enter his third term there.
Under the guidance of acclaimed play-
wright Gemma Doorly, he signed up for a writing and screenplay course.
His effort bore fruition this week when his short play 'Death’s Door' debuted at Courtney's Bar. He wrote and directed the drama and this has inspired him to think even bigger.
“My ambition is to write and direct a film, using all the assets available to us here in Killarney,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.
Those assets include the students from the West End School of the Arts, locations like the National Park and venues like Courtney’s, ANAM Arts and Cultural Centre and the INEC.

Snooker legends, Ken Doherty and Jimmy White, are gearing up for a very special New Year’s reunion in Killarney as they take part in a charity exhibition match.
The renowned snooker legends will appear at Killarney’s Eviston House Hotel on Monday, January 2 for this very special event in aid of Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support House, organised by local man Connie O’Sullivan and hotel owner Patrick Eviston.
Patrick wanted to host the event in memory of his late wife Linda, who received valuable support from Recovery Haven prior to her death.
Tickets for the event are already selling quickly, with two ticket options available: a standard entry ticket priced at €20 or
a VIP ticket for €50, which entitles the buyer to a meet-and-greet with the players prior to the match, as well as priority seating.
The event also marks the 25th anniversary of Ken Doherty’s World Championship win, with the Dubliner set to bring along his coveted trophy on the night.
As well as the match itself, there will also be a raffle on the night in aid of Recovery Haven Kerry, featuring a host of keenly
sought-after items, including a signed cue from each player, as well as a cue signed by the late, great, Alex Higgins. The revealing of the preferred route corridor for the construction of the new Killarney to Farranfore road has been delayed – again.
Last month the Killarney Advertiser reported that details of the new road would go on display before Christmas.
Four potential routes for the N22 Farranfore-Killarney project were identified and were put out to public consultation in May 2021. These have now been whittled down to just one.
Paul Curry of the National Road Design Office in Castleisland, told November’s Killarney Municipal District meeting that initial route surveys have been completed by his office and that the new road layout will go on public display in the
Great Southern Killarney “by the tail end of November”.
The survey was subject to a peer review within the higher ranks of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
However, Mr Curry has since written to all elected councillors in the Killarney Municipal District.
“Following the Transport Infrastructure Ireland, peer review of the Draft Option Selection Report for the N22 Killarney Project which was undertaken in October, further work has since been requested by the TII,’” he said in the letter.
“This request will delay the public display of the Emerging Preferred Corridor until at least Q1 2023. The additional work sought by the TII includes further appraisal of the Active Travel and Public Transport modes potential to meet the scheme objectives.”
An official farewell got underway last Friday to mark the retirement of two inspirational teachers with over 81 years of service between them.
87 current and former staff members and retirees from Killarney Community College gathered in the Dromhall Hotel to celebrate the retirement of Marcia Kissane and Siobhain O'Brien. Marcia has taught in the school for 43 years and Siobhain for 38 years. Speakers on the night included current principal Stella Loughnane and former principals Eamonn Fitzgerald, Pat Favier and Fiona O'Brien. Past colleague Julie Shanahan and current teacher John Keane also spoke.
As well as teaching Geography, Maths and Irish Marcia was fundamental in starting the Leaving Cert Applied programme in Killarney Community College and was the coordinator of LCA from its instigation to her retirement.
Siobhain taught History and Irish and was behind several winning Scór teams in the school. Her skill and love of music was passed on to students and staff alike throughout her years in the college.
Both Marcia and Siobhain had huge interest in the GAA and contributed greatly to school sporting achievements over the years.
The celebrating continued until the early hours with music and dancing and was definitely a night to remember.

A new filmmaker has entered the scene - 16-year-old Glen Bowler - and he’s in the process of something special.
The young filmmaker and photographer is currently making a short film which will be submitted into the Fresh Young Filmmakers competition.
‘The Legend of Patrick Greenwood’ is approximately 10 minutes long and is undergoing production. There are many local actors in the film, including Danny and Mikie Galvin, Don Rohan and Ellen O’Shea. However, the main focus comes in the directing and scriptwriting, which is all done by Glen himself.
Glen’s history of filmmaking goes back to June 2020 when he began to make local films alongside some of his friends, such as ‘The Aspen’s Rain’ and ‘Wyvern’. However, his first film with a detailed production system came in 2021 with ‘Inner Journey’ almost an hour long film of scenic cinematography - masterwork of an primordial Killarney, one where he submitted to the Fresh Film Festival and got nom-
inated for Best Young Director. His longest-spanning project was a collaboration, again, alongside some of his friends, in ‘That Was The River’, a near three and a half hour biopic detailing the events of an escape from a corrupt school. The film was released on YouTube in May.
‘The Legend of Patrick Greenwood’ is a short film with swelling, gorgeous pans, stills and slides of a wild, untamed, Killarney countryside.
Glen aims for the film to be “precise and impactful”. He describes the plot revolving around “showing the devastation of Muckross forest being cut down and replanted by Patrick Greenwood”. He also explains how some of the themes stir on “legacy, nature and what you leave behind”.
“I’m hyped again that I am making a film,” Glen told the Killarney Advertiser.
“We are making progress with the film, I want to display Killarney in a wild, adventurous fashion.”
Although it is still undergoing production, Glen hopes to submit the final film into the ‘Fresh Young Filmmakers Competition’ a prestigious award ceremony for young Irish entrepreneurs in the film business.

Celebrating this year's Winter Solstice will take place on Sunday, December 18 in aid of the Kerry Hospice Foundation Palliative Care.
The astronomical calendar is getting closer to what is the shortest day of the year - on Wednesday, December 21 - but as it falls on a week day this year, organisers are planning to have a Sunday Solstice to allow people to travel and have time to savour the day.
These ancient sacred summits, ‘The Paps of Anú’, resemble a pair of breast shaped hills known as ‘The Paps’ in the Derry Na Saggart Mountains close to the Cork Kerry border. The Paps have long been associated with mythology, mysticism and majesty. The Goddess Anú represents all that is earthly, fertile, abundant and protective.
With kind permission of local landowners Sean and Mary O’Donoghue, Glenflesk, and neighbour Jimmy Moynihan, the walk departs from Garries Bridge -
the first bridge after St Agatha’s Church, Glenflesk, meeting at 6.30am. A long walk in darkness to the summit, it has two strenuous inclines, leading to the Western Pap at 690 metres. At approximately 8.45am sunrise and craic begins, with Glenflesk's finest musicians Derry and Rosie Healy, setting the pace for a Kerry polka set, followed by an ancient ceremonial blessing by another Glenflesk native, Mary Cronin. The trek will be led by expert mountaineer Donie Mulcahy and crew. A donation of €20 will be collected on the morning of the walk. It is compulsory to bring a head torch, warm clothes, hiking boots, waterproof jacket and pants, gloves, hat, food and a drink. A good level of fitness is required. Guides will be on duty for gear check before departure.
Jumpers have helped to raise almost €10k so far - but now it's a very special jersey which could drive the fundraising numbers up!
A Kerry football jersey signed by the 2022 All-Ireland winning team is up for grabs via a fundraising link once a donation is made to the Presents for Palliative fundraiser.
On Friday eight local schools including Holy Cross Mercy, Killarney Community College, Presentation Monastery, Lissivigeen, St Brendan’s College, St Brigid’s, St Francis Special School, and St Oliver’s swapped their uniforms for their most colourful festive gear with funds going to help the amazing services in the Palliative Care Unit/Kerry Hospice Foundation.
"The day took place across the schools involved last Friday (December 2) and
looks like it has been a success," teacher Elaine Moynihan from St Brendan's College told the Killarney Advertiser.
"The donations from the schools are still being counted but students look to be on their way towards making their goal of €10k."
The iDonate 'Fundraising For Kerry Hospice Foundation' has been very helpful in this regard, she added.
"Anyone who donates via the link and leaves their name will be in with a chance to win a Kerry jersey signed by the 2022 All-Ireland winning team which will be presented to them before Christmas by a couple of members of the team.
"This was organised by the students involved in the fundraiser as a way to say thanks, and give back, to the members of the community who have gotten involved in the event - the link is live until December 18 and the draw will be made the following day."
Tributes have been paid to Marie Murphy of Aughacureen, who died in tragic circumstances on November 30.
Marie was a member of the well known Murphy business family in Killarney – her brother runs KWD Recycling and she was heavily involved in the business. She was best known for involvement in the local GAA both as a county star and a member of Fossa GAA Club. She was a third generation Kerry footballer, her grandfather Con and father John all played football
for Kerry. She was extremely proud of her niece Abbie, her brother Seán’s daughter, when she became the fourth generation Murphy to play for Kerry. Marie played for Kerry in 1976 and re-joined Fossa GAA Club in 2010 when the ladies’ side of the club was re-formed. She acted as a mentor for current group of ladies. Back in 2019 when Fossa GAA Club published a book to mark its 50th anniversary she was one of the leading lights on that committee. This year, when the club held its Night of Legends to raise funds for a new dressing room for the ladies' club, Marie was one of the guests of honour at the INEC event and was interviewed on the
stage in front of a capacity audience. She was one of the many club members who helped organise the recent Fossa Golf Classic and acted as official photographer for that event.
“The club is numb with sadness,” said Fossa GAA Club chairman Dermot Clifford. “She was a loyal member and very proud of the club. A lovely, unassuming lady who will be sorely missed.”
Marie will be sadly missed by her brothers Con, Seamus and Seán, sisters-inlaw Breda, Gennie and Anna, her nieces Shauna, Amy, Kate and Abigail, nephews John, Jack, Luke, aunties Mairead and Maura.

More than 40 Ukrainian children are busy crafting some very special Christmas cards which they plan to gift to the people of Killarney.
| Photo: Oleksandr KhomenkoWeekly master classes are held in various hotels where Ukrainians are currently staying and it's there where little Ukrainians create their masterpieces, and their mothers sign them with their own hands. KASI helped purchase all the necessary materials for making cards. Each one is unique and more than one hundred cards will soon be sent to many Killarney residents.
“With this gesture, we want to welcome
the local community of Killarney, and also express our own gratitude for the warm welcome, good attitude and help we receive," Nataliya Krasnenkova, one of the organisers of the masterclasses, said. "The children happily joined in making Christmas cards. Children are very creative and put their whole soul into their work. We hope that everyone who receives cards will appreciate our efforts," Nataliya Eismont, co-organiser of the masterclasses, added.
It’s been quite a year for Dieter’s Swim Academy as they raised over €5,500 for two very worthy charities.
Crumlin's Children’s Hospital and the Irish Cancer Society were the beneficiaries and last week a special visitor made all the hard work worthwhile as Kerry footballer David Clifford dropped in. “We at the swim academy would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped raise and donate the money for the 3 Lakes Challenge this year," Dieter Gogsch, swim coordinator, said. "The two charities are very close to the hearts of the swim academy members and team of staff and we were delighted with the support and donations from everyone."
The children had to swim 15km (600 lengths of the pool) to complete the challenge a super achievement by all the children who participated, he explained.
"We also took our swimmers on some very enjoyable day trips as a treat for all their hard work, dedication and commitment to their swim classes throughout the year. Fun days out to Tayto Park, Kennedy's Pet Farm, Fota Alpine Skate Trail and Air-tastic Inflatable Park were had by some of the members of the swim academy.
"To top the year off our swimmers had a surprise visit last Sunday from Kerry legend David Clifford - a massive thank you to him for taking time out of his hectic schedule to meet and greet our swimmers and parents, take photos and sign autographs for them.
"We would like to say a huge thank you, a merry Christmas and a happy New Year to everyone who contributed to the success of the academy this year – from the fantastic team of swim instructors, to the kids and parents and of course the Aquila Club Leisure Centre, Gleneagle Hotel. We look forward to seeing you all back in the pool in January.”

ry Airport remains compliant with regulatory requirements in key areas, such as air traffic control, fire services and security.”
Funding this year for airports will total over €37 million building on the €161 million provided in unprecedented aviation supports during 2021.
“I welcome this funding which will deliver further vital financial supports to Kerry Airport with a particular focus on safety, security operations and air traffic control," Minister Foley said.
"This funding reinforces the importance and value that Government places on the vital role of our regional airports and how connectivity directly supports tourism and enterprise in Kerry.”

Learning all about French life was a fun day at school for primary school children last week.
| By Michelle CreanThird to Sixth Class pupils in Fossa National School celebrated the end of this year's French module organised by Post Primary Language Ireland (PPLI) 'Say Yes
to Languages', an eight week programme that aims at promoting languages and cultural diversity in Irish primary schools.
This is the school’s second year running the module.
"On the day, children dressed as bakers,
artists, footballers, mimes, fashionistas or just in their own clothes as French pupils don't wear a uniform," Hélène Olivier-Courtney from French For All, told the Killarney Advertiser.
"The course was about celebrating eight weeks of learning not only French but about the French and Francophone culture and the appreciation of languages in
general in our multicultural society."
Last year’s six-week module was extended to eight weeks, she explained.
"The added two weeks have allowed children not only to learn more French but also to engage in a reflexion about diversity and the benefits of learning languages on a community and personal level and we can only hope that it will be extended again next year!
The success of the initiative relies on an all-school approach and the active involvement of class teachers, SNA and management, she added.
"The whole staff in Fossa certainly helped make this new journey a special and enjoyable experience for the children!"

He proved it again last Thursday night when he hosted his ninth 'Liam O'Connor Concert with St Brendan's College Students' in the school's chapel.
While the concert was always about showcasing the students’ talents as musicians and singers, the guest list would not have looked out of place on Ryan
Tubridy’s Late Late Show on RTÉ One.
The GAA world was represented by former Kilkenny hurling manager Brian Cody, Kerry stars and past students of St Brendan’s Dara Moynihan, David Clifford and Gavin White.
Of course, legendary RTÉ sports commentator Marty Morrissey was on hand to get the best responses out of the sporting stars.
O’Connor and his musical children Saoirse, Oisín, and Cillian who is a student of the college, weren’t even the top musical bill on the night.
That honour went to Paddy Casey.
“Casey royally entertained one and all, and our surprise guest, the RTÉ broad-
caster Marty Morrissey, enthralled us with his views on Kerry footballers Dara Moynihan, Gavin White and David Clifford,” Liam told the Killarney Advertiser. “A night of unbelievable synergies was completed with an abundance of local talent. It was a truly unique night of star talent that will live on in the memories of everyone who was there.”
Liam also paid special tribute to the college Principal Seán Coffey and music teachers Mish O’Donoghue and Niamh O’Connell for their colossal support.
“The students themselves were indeed amazing, with the energy they brought to their singing, dancing and playing music. Their commitment to the event was
such that they generously gave up their lunch hours to help make it all work,” he added.
The success of the concert rounded off a busy year for the international-renowned accordion champion that included a high-energy appearance at Electric Picnic and an equally lauded performance with the Celtic Tenors at the rugby clash between Munster and world champions South Africa at Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Cork.
He and his son Oisín also made history in November when they became the first father and son pair to play both football and music at Croke Park on the same day.

With the darker evenings here for the winter months, households across the country are seeing their energy consumption rise as they light and heat their homes for longer.
The escalating energy prices and increase in cost of living mean many individuals and families are bracing themselves for a tough winter.
Electricity prices in Ireland are among the highest in the EU and the recent electricity allowance of €200 paid out to over two million households nationwide as part of the €600 Electricity Costs Emergency Benefit Scheme will be a very important help to many according to Eamonn Foley, Service Delivery Manager at Kerry MABS.
“The winter months are proving challenging for households as many struggle to
make ends meet," Eamonn said. "As prices soar, families are left with very little available income at the end of the month. If you're feeling the strain, please reach out to your local MABS office or contact our National Helpline. Our Money Advisors will be able to advise on the best options for maximising income and consolidating debts and outgoings.
“Budgeting is more vital now than ever before to make the most of your income. Many people don't have a comprehensive understanding of their outgoings and this is an essential element of making
successful financial decisions, particularly in this current high inflationary climate.” MABS provides free, practical and realistic financial advice and highlights a number of areas that households should regularly review from taking the time to look at their rights and entitlements to shopping around for electricity, phone and Internet providers, ensuring they are availing of the best deal.

Over 500 graduates from Kerry College’s Clash, Denny Street, Killorglin, Listowel and Monavalley campuses along with their families and friends gathered at the Brandon Hotel to celebrate the occasion. Special guest speaker was Dr Karen
Weekes – Endurance Adventurer, Performance Psychologist and University lecturer who delivered an inspirational speech and left the audience energised.
Chairman of Kerry ETB, Cllr Jim Finucane, wished the graduates well in their future careers and said it was a privilege to facilitate them in their personal journey.
Addressing the graduates, Director of Further Education and Training, Kerry ETB, Mr Owen O’Donnell said that he was delighted to be in attendance to mark this important milestone in the graduate's journey. Niall Collins, TD Minister of State with responsibility for Skills and Further Education at the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science said “the diversity of Further Education and Training (FET) is one of its key strengths. It reflects the communities across the country; the diverse backgrounds of the learners who engage with it and also address the multiple needs that can help our society. And Kerry College exemplifies
this diversity.
“I want to congratulate everyone graduating today. Your presence here today is a testament, first and foremost to your own skills and hard work, and I hope you are able to reflect and be truly proud of yourselves for what you have

Due to phenomenal interest in the theatrical portrayal of a War of Independence ambush which happened in mid-Kerry in 1921, a series of new dates for a highly acclaimed stage play, which tells the dramatic story of the incident, have been announced this week.
Ballymacandy, which is based on the bestselling book by author and historian Owen O’Shea, will return to the stage at the Muintir na Tíre Hall in Milltown for three nights in January.
Following a sell-out run in November, Ballymacandy will be staged again on January 19, 20 and 21 and demand for tickets is expected to be extremely high. The play, which is written by Owen O’Shea and directed by Mike O’Halloran, has already been seen by over 800 people during a six-night run last month.
“The interest in the story and in the play has exceeded all our expectations and since our run in November, there has been huge demand for another run to ensure that more people get the opportunity to see the play,” said Owen.
“The cast and production crew have pulled out all the stops to perform again on the third weekend in January and we are sure that it will be another fantastic success."
Tickets for Ballymacandy will go on sale on Sunday (December 11) at the Christmas Market at the Muintir na Tíre Hall in Milltown between 11am and 4pm. The tickets for the sell-out play will make the
ideal Christmas present and are priced just €15.
Ballymacandy involves a cast of 25 locals, all of whom live near the location where five RIC and Black and Tans were killed on June 1, 1921 just six weeks before the end of the War of Independence.
“The demand for tickets shows a widespread interest in and appreciation of local history. The entire community has been talking about the ambush since the
play opened and we have had people attending from all over the county and all over the country,” added Owen.
“I am immensely grateful to an exceptional cast and a team of volunteers who have made this production such a huge success. It is all based on real events and the cast of actors have done a very professional job in bringing the story to the stage."

Time
The latest edition of the iconic news magazine was published on Wednesday and features Zelensky surrounded by his country men and women waving yellow and blue flags in honour of the ‘Spirit of Ukraine’.
Time editor-in-chief, Edward Felsenthal, said this year's decision was "the most clear-cut in memory".
Zelensky has delivered daily speeches since Russia's February 24 invasion. These are followed by Ukrainians and citizens and Governments around the world.
"In the weeks after Russian bombs began falling on Feb. 24, his decision not to flee Kyiv but to stay and rally support was fateful. From his first 40-second Instagram post on Feb. 25 – showing that his Cabinet and civil society were intact and in place – to daily speeches delivered remotely to the likes of houses of Parliament, the World Bank, and the Grammy Awards, Ukraine’s President was everywhere,” Felsenthal wrote in his editorial announcing the winner.
"His information offensive shifted the geopolitical weather system, setting off a wave of action that swept the globe. "Whether the battle for Ukraine fills one with hope or with fear, Zelensky galvanized the world in a way we haven't seen in decades. The additional ‘Spirit of Ukraine’ award was for “countless individuals inside and outside the country, who fought behind the scenes,
including everyday people such as chefs and surgeons"," added the editor-in-chief.
Zelensky is a former comedian and actor, who once played Ukraine’s president on a TV show.
Time first presented its Person of the
Year award in 1927.
Early winners included aviation pioneer Charles Lindenberg (1927) and automotive king Walter Chrysler (1928).
Tesla Cars and Twitter owner, Elon Musk, was named as the 2021 cover figure.
A Tralee teen's stunning piece of art called ‘Cooper’ has been chosen as the cover image for this year's Texaco calendar.
16-year-old Clodagh McCluskey is a student in Presentation Secondary School in Tralee and her work features along with 13 others from around the country after they entered the Texaco Children’s Art Competition.
According to one of the competition ad-
judicators, it was one that perfectly illustrates skill, creativity and imagination. ‘Cooper’ also won Clodagh the Special Merit Award in the 2022 competition.
Clodagh also won first prize in the 14-15-year-old category in 2021, meaning she is no stranger when it comes to winning big.

A collection of over 2,500 nativity scenes could break not one - but two - Guinness World Records, thanks to an American historian.
The nativity scene currently on display in The Hills Bank in Washington includes 2,539 pieces which belong to Michael Zahs.
It's thought to be one of the largest nativity set collections in the world as it comes from over one hundred different countries!
Michael's collection, which will remain at the bank until January, began in the 1950s. Setting up this year's display in the bank, which includes all of his pieces, took him six weeks!
"I like to have people come and look at the details. Much of these are handmade, some of them are very historical," Zahs told KCRG-TV.
Currently he is trying to get the collection certified as the world's largest by Guinness World Records.
Previous records for the largest collection of nativity sets was set at 1,802 in 2009. The record for largest display of nativity sets was set at 2,150 in 2010.

A section of the Macroom bypass will open today (Friday).
The new road linking Coolcower to Carrigaphooca will be the first bit of the 22km stretch to open, and is set to be a game-changer according to local business owners - alleviating decades of heavy traffic through the town. It will be welcome news for Kerry motorists and when it's fully open, the bypass will cut around 30 minutes on a typical journey between Cork and Killarney. A temporary roundabout has been built just west of the Carrigaphooca junction to allow the first section to open.
The final phase will open sometime next year.
“Macroom has struggled with traffic congestion for some time now. We look out the window here in the pharmacy, and it is just bumper-to-bumper with no one intending to stop in the town,” Henry Murphy of Matt Murphy’s Pharmacy in Macroom said.
“There are already signs of increased footfall, which of course is a hugely important step in rebuilding the town's identity. It will be the first time in many years that both locals and visitors will be able to park with ease and truly appreciate all that Macroom has to offer.”
Trócaire has issued a heartfelt Christmas plea to the people of Kerry to support the hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees in Lebanon who have been forced to flee their homes due to the 11-year-long civil war.
“It is vital that this Christmas we don’t forget the hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees who have been forced to flee their homes during this terrible war," launching their Christmas appeal, Trócaire Deputy CEO, Finola Finnan, said.
"Trócaire is proud to work with partners supporting traumatised refugees in Lebanon and helping them live with dignity. Lebanon remains at the forefront of one of the worst humanitarian crises hosting 1.5 million of the 6.6 million Syrians who have fled the conflict since 2011. The Syrian refugee population in Lebanon remains one of the largest concentrations of refugees per capita in the world. With the generosity of our Irish supporters this Christmas Trócaire will continue to provide basic
needs in the camps in the New Year.”
Ms Finnan said Irish donations are helping over 8,000 Syrian refugees who are being provided with community resilience training, emergency support as well as psychological support services and digital literacy for youth in the camps.
Syrian born Journalist, Razan Ibraheem, who came to Ireland from Syria as a refugee, and well-known GAA figure and RTÉ sports pundit, Dr Noelle Healy, also attended the appeal launch.
"It has been more than 11 years since the start of the brutal war in Syria," Ms Ibraheem said.
"The people are still suffering. Syrian refugees in Lebanon still live in tents and are deprived of basic necessities.
Syrian refugee children are cold, hungry and missing schools. All they want for Christmas is an act of kindness, a scarf, a jumper or hot soup. Our response to the refugee crises or any crisis, define who we are and what we stand for."

ESRI Ireland, which specialises in the devotion of geographic systems of information, has developed a map that provides details of activities to do this Christmas.
A digital, interactive map has just been made using ESRI’s ArcGIS mapping system highlighting a range of jolly activities from ice skating, festivals to market stalls. If you wish to soak yourself in a winter wonderland, look no further. According to ESRI, the map isolates var-
ious landmarks across Ireland, all partaking in the same wish to immerse the family in the glow of winter lights and the glittering atmosphere of Christmas music.
The map pinpoints the many locations that are transforming into winter wonderlands this season. This may include the mystical train-rides of Donegal, and even down to Kerry, which is offering up a bountiful supply of family-friendly festivities.

Primary schools nationwide are eligible to enter, with teachers required to email a video or link of their entry directly to Audiology Medical Services. Shortlisted finalists will be selected by a panel of judges, with the winner of the massive €1,000 prize then chosen through a public vote.
“We have seen how musically talented the children of Ireland are over the last couple of years with this competition, and I cannot wait to hear this year’s sub-
missions," Chief Operating Officer of Audiology Medical Service, Kay Lewis, said. "Our Christmas Carol School Competition highlights the tremendous talent while celebrating the joy of Christmas and all the wonderful sounds we experience over the festive season, and in particular
highlighting the important role our hearing plays in creating lasting memories and experiencing Christmas to the fullest.
“If our Christmas Carol Competition isn’t for your class, we are also running a Christmas Colouring Competition with a choice of three different festive designs
to win a €100 shopping voucher. And, for the first time, we want to hear the children of Ireland's best jokes which will be published in a Children’s Joke Book set to be launched in Spring 2023. All proceeds from the joke book will go to local children’s charities. Email jokes, with the student’s name, school and location to hello@audiologymedicalservices.ie.”
A family-owned business, Audiology Medical Services is leading the way in Ireland when it comes to the provision of expert and comprehensive child-centred and family-friendly diagnostic audiological assessment of infants, children, and adolescents. With international studies proving that early detection of hearing loss will result in improved academic and social outcomes for hard of hearing children and their families, Audiology Medical Services ensures that every child that attends an appointment has the most accurate assessment possible.
Audiology Medical Services also believe that no child should endure lengthy waiting lists to access a simple hearing examination, which is why they are fully committed to offering a speedy appointment process to relay any concerns.

An unprecedented number of overseas competitors entered last weekend’s Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally bringing a very welcome end of season boost to the town’s businesses.
The rally attracted entries from England, Wales and the United States, as well as all corners of Ireland.
Participants and fans arrived in Killarney on Thursday and stayed until Sunday morning – many of them eager to see World Rally Championship star Craig Breen and his recently retired co-driver Paul Nagle defend their 2021 title in an ex-Frank Meagher Ford Sierra RS Cosworth.
The rally began with a ceremonial start on Friday night, an event that packed the town centre with rally fans, locals and curious tourists.
The dedicated fans had already entered the famous Moll’s Gap stage in their camper vans on Thursday night.
Fans lining the seven special stages on Saturday were served up a treat. After
six tests Breen’s Sierra was tied with challenger Jonny Greer’s four-wheeldrive example.
In a true mark of sportsmanship, earlier in the day, Greer loaned Breen some crucial rear axle components, without which the defending champion would have been forced out of the rally.
However, a second failure on the approach to the third and final run over Moll’s Gap ended Breen’s challenge and allowed Greer through for a popular win.
Local man Alan Ring, and his West Cork co-driver Adrian Deasy were second for the second year in a row in their Subaru Legacy RS while Fergus O’Meara and Mikie Galvin were the top all-local crew. They finished fifth in their Ford Escort.
One place ahead was the similar car of Welsh visitor Neil Williams. The defend-
ing Irish Tarmac Historic Rally champion was one of many overseas drivers to make the finish.
Eighth placed Tom Clarke (England) finished one place ahead of Welsh visitor Melvyn Evans.
Londoner Harry Hunt, more famous for his Dakar Rally exploits, completed the top 10.
“This was the most fun we ever had on a rally, the organisation, the people, everything was top class,” he said.
Alan Watkins from the British Midlands has been coming to Killarney for years. He finished 13th on this occasion but his comments at the finish summed up the experience enjoyed by all international participants.
“Killarney never fails to impress, it’s not just the rallying, it is the town, the charm, the people, the welcome, the surroundings, come rain or shine once you’ve been it will never be your last visit,” he said.
Atlanta-based Donegal man Seamus Burke was the top US visitor while Kyle Tilley from Indiana had a film team with him and they recorded a documentary on their experience.
In the popular modified section of the rally, Glenflesk’s Denis Hickey and Eoin O’Leary were the best of the locals, finishing eighth in the category and taking home the coveted O’Riordan Cup.

You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Late of Ross Road, Killarney Whose anniversary occurs on 16th December.
I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below, With tiny lights, like Heaven’s stars, reflecting on the snow, The sight is so spectacular! Please wipe away that tear, For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas Choir up here.
I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring, For it is beyond description to hear the angels sing.
I know how much you miss me.
I see the pain inside your heart, But I am not so far away. We really aren’t apart. So be happy for me dear ones. You know I hold you dear. And be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I send you each a special gift from my heavenly home above. I send you each a memory of my undying love After all “Love” is the gift, more precious than pure gold, It was always more important in the stories Jesus told. Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to do, For I can’t count the blessings or love he has for you. So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear.
Remember, I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

Kerry FC have responded to online criticism of the price of their 2023 seated season tickets, highlighting the availability of “other options” for supporters of the League of Ireland’s newest club.
Season tickets for the Main Stand at Mounthawk Park went on sale on Tuesday morning at a price of €275. LOI fans were quick to point out that this is the most expensive season ticket in the First Division, with a number of rival teams charging less than €200. In fact, many established Premier Division sides also charge less than what Kerry are asking. For example, a standard season ticket for league champions Shamrock Rovers costs €240.
When approached for comment by the Killarney Advertiser, Kerry FC said that pricing structures were “examined for a
long time” in the build-up to their season ticket launch.
“It's worth noting that the €275 season ticket guarantees your assigned seat for every home league game in the 2023 season in a covered stand on the long side of the pitch,” the club explained.
“If supporters would prefer, there are plenty of other season ticket options, including a terrace ticket for general admission at a price of €200.
“Family tickets ensure children can attend our games at a minimal cost while students/OAPs receive a significant discount on their yearly ticket.”
Despite the concerns raised over the cost, over 100 Main Stand season tickets were sold within one hour of going on sale at 9am on Tuesday.

upgrading their grounds in recent months but Mounthawk Park is still expected to have the lowest capacity in the division (roughly 1,100). It has been reported that this relatively low capacity is the main reason behind the high price of season tickets.
The club are yet to unveil their first team manager or squad for the 2023 season, which gets underway in February.
Kerry will go head-to-head with Waterford United, Treaty United, Cobh Ramblers, Athlone Town, Finn Harps, Galway United, Bray Wanderers, Wexford Youths and Longford Town in the LOI First Division.

MOUNTHAWK | By Adam Moynihan Follow Adam on Twitter @AdamMoynihanReigning All-Ireland champions Kerry will get their 2023 season up and running with a McGrath Cup game against fierce rivals Cork. The match will be played in Cork on Wednesday, January 4.
The Kingdom will then face Clare at home the following Monday (January 9) with the winners of the three-team pool advancing to a final against Waterford, Limerick or Tipperary on Wednesday, January 18.
Last season, dominant McGrath Cup victories over Limerick, Tipperary and Cork kickstarted an impressive campaign during which Kerry also won National League, Munster and All-Ireland titles.
Manager Jack O’Connor will no doubt be hoping that the McGrath Cup can provide a similar launchpad in 2023.

gal. They will follow that up with games against Monaghan at home, Mayo away, Armagh at home, Tyrone away, and Roscommon at home. They will then round out their regular National League season with an away game against the team they defeated in last year’s All-Ireland, Galway.
The Kerry team are currently on their end of year holiday in Mauritius. They also took in Dubai en route to the small island in the Indian Ocean. They will return on Saturday, December 17.
This means that Dr Crokes and Spa members of the panel will be back in time to participate in the East Kerry Championship final, which is slated for Sunday, December 18 at 2pm. The match will clash with the World Cup final which kicks off at 3pm. When contacted by the Killarney Advertiser, the East Kerry Board said there is no talk of changing the time of the Crokes v Spa fixture.

The Scotts Lakers are hoping to get back to winning ways this Saturday with a home game against Moy Tolka Rovers.
The Dublin side currently sit in second place in the division with their only defeat coming against Malahide in Round 5 back in October. They subsequently bounced back from that defeat with fine wins over Team North West, the Dublin Lions and, most impressively, Drogheda Wolves. They come with a strong line up including 40-year-old American Michael Bonaparte who has vast experience of playing in Irish basketball and contributes regularly.
Lakers coach Jarlath Lee will be ex-
pecting his charges to rediscover some of their early season form after recent losses to the Limerick Celtics and SETU Carlow. With another home game to come before Christmas - the Waterford Vikings visit on December 17 - the Lakers can bring some festive cheer to their supporters. Tip-off this coming Saturday is at 7.30pm.
The St Paul’s women’s team have a weekend off after last Saturday’s comprehensive victory over the Limerick Sport Huskies in the quarter-final of the National Cup.
Yuleska Tejeda and Sofia Paska combined for a total of 56 points while local woman Rheanne O'Shea chipped in with 19, including five three-pointers.

The Lawn Tennis Association has been fined over €950,000 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for banning Russian and Belarusian male players from this summer's grass-court events. The ban was imposed in reaction to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The governing body has also been warned it could lose its ATP membership if a similar decision is made next year.
The LTA says it is "deeply disappointed" and has accused the ATP of showing a "surprising lack of empathy for the situation in Ukraine."
The punishment follows six-figure fines for the LTA and the All England Lawn Tennis Club, who organise Wimbledon, from the WTA for excluding female Russian and Belarusian players.
The ATP, which oversees men's tennis events outside of the Grand Slams, allows Russians and Belarusians to compete in Tour events but not under their national flags.
Mills Lane, the well-known American referee who officiated in over 100 championship boxing matches, has died aged 85.
Lane, who was famous for shouting “let’s get it on” after giving instructions to the two boxers before each fight, refereed bouts that featured the likes of Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Thomas Hearns and Julio César Chávez. The former marine fought professionally himself before becoming a ref. He was in the ring for the 1997 heavyweight title rematch in which Tyson was disqualified for biting Evander Holyfield’s ears.
“The Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame mourns the passing of great referee Mills Lane,” officials said in announcing Lane’s death. “A longtime resident of Reno, Mills was a district attorney and later District Court Judge in Washoe County.”
The GAA recently refused the Mayo footballers’ request to wear rainbow-coloured numbers on their jerseys in the 2023 National League. Unsurprisingly, the Association’s response to Mayo and their charity partner Mindspace Mayo, who came up with the idea, has drawn a mixed reaction.
For his part, referee David Gough, who is openly gay, described the decision as “abhorrent”. Personally, when I spoke about the issue last week on Twitter, I was struck by how vehemently against the proposed campaign that some people are.
I fear that there is more at play and that the backlash is part of a wider trend amongst some young men, but of course the usual excuses were wheeled out.
First you have the ‘keep politics out of sport’ brigade. I’m sorry but that’s one argument I just can’t get on board with in general and it rings especially hollow in the world of Gaelic games. Sports and politics have always been intertwined and the GAA is no different. The very foundation of the GAA was a political statement of sorts, an act of patriotism under British imperial rule. These strong ties between our national games and our nation’s political history are regularly highlighted by the Association itself and by stakeholders within it.
In recent years, several teams, including the Cork footballers and hurlers, have worn jerseys commemorating Irish political figures.
O’Neills, the GAA’s primary kit supplier, sell Michael Collins-themed GAA shirts as well as 1916 jerseys with images of the post-Rising GPO on the front and Poblacht na hÉireann on the back.
When you look at the Qatar World Cup and see teams like Morocco flying the Palestinian flag while LGBTQ+ flags are confiscated at the turnstiles, it’s very easy to spot the hypocrisy. Ireland is not Qatar and the GAA is not FIFA (thankfully) but the attitudes of supporters and administrators seem to follow the same pattern no matter where you look. The vast majority who are supposedly against politics in sport are actually fine with politics in sport, as long as the message in question is palatable to them.
Leaving all that to one side, it’s also worth pointing out that the Mayo footballers were not trying to make a political statement in the first place. The aim of displaying rainbow colours in this manner is to make members of LGBTQ+ community feel welcome and to raise awareness around inclusivity, diversity and discrimination. We’re talking about human rights and basic human decency here, not politics.
There are those who say discrimination isn’t a problem in the GAA, that everyone is welcome already. If that is the
case then why are there no openly gay intercounty players? It’s very likely that they do exist, and it’s also very likely that they’re worried about how they will be received if they come out. One of the top teams deciding to wear rainbow numbers might seem like a small gesture, and I've seen plenty of people claiming that it would be meaningless, but doing so might provide reassurance to a gay player or supporter who is struggling with their sexuality. Would that not make it worthwhile?
Of course, whenever someone tries to do something positive in the name of inclusion, the term ‘virtue signalling’ is inevitably thrown out there. These past few weeks, it has been the Mayo footballers’ turn to bear the brunt of it. Funnily enough, the people who tend to use this term are often saying more about themselves than the people they’re targeting. In their own minds, when they see a person speaking up for a minority group, the only possible explanation they can come up with is that the person in question is seeking praise. It’s one thing not caring about the issue at hand, it’s another thing entirely to blindly assume that no one else does. Frankly, it’s a pretty sad and narrow way of viewing the world, but unfortunately that’s just how some people’s minds are shaped.
As for the GAA and their reasoning, they reportedly told the Mayo county board
that playing gear is “sacrosanct”. Let’s be honest. That’s not strictly true. In 2021, sleeve sponsors were given the green light, to add to the chest and upper back sponsors that already appear on many counties’ shirts. Four branded areas on a jersey. That’s more than the Premier League allow and the Premier League is regarded as one of the most money-hungry sporting bodies on the planet. I suppose everything is sacred until there’s money on the table.
In fairness to the GAA, they have not issued a blanket ban on rainbow colours. In the 2020 All-Ireland semi-final, players from Mayo and Tipperary, along with David Gough and his officials, participated in the Rainbow Laces campaign. It is understood that the GAA don’t have an issue with laces or armbands being worn in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
The only slight problem is that the Rainbow Laces campaign tends to run towards the end of the calendar year which suits the Premier League, for example, but not the GAA as the intercounty season ends much earlier. (2020 was an exception due to the pandemic.)
Of course, there’s nothing stopping the GPA and the GAA from coming together and organising their own campaign. If they want to.
It’s one thing saying that everyone is welcome and that the GAA is where we all belong. It’s another thing showing it.
RAINBOW: Mayo footballer Aidan O'Shea. Here's a mock-up of how the rainbow-themed numbers could have looked. Photo: Ray McManus/Sportsfile.As expected, Spa and Dr Crokes qualified for the 2022 O’Donoghue Cup final with wins over Gneeveguilla and Legion in last Saturday’s semi-finals. The games were played in unseasonably dry weather conditions.
The final will be a repeat of 2021 final, when Crokes edged out Spa. Based on what I saw on Saturday last, Spa are by far the superior of the four teams and will start the final as firm favourites over the Dr Crokes team, so weakened by long-term injuries to key players.
The match is fixed for December 18 at 2pm. I expect the East Kerry Board will bring that starting time forward to avoid a clash with the World Cup final in Qatar - otherwise they will lose out heavily on gate receipts.
Spa 2-17 • Gneeveguilla 2-6
The result was never in doubt in this game played at the Dr Crokes grounds. Spa had all the aces as Gneeveguilla were forced to funnel double-digit numbers back in defensive duties behind the ball, but that did little to stem the incessant flow of Spa scores.
The winners were competent and commanding and even by half-time, the die was cast. I thought their forwards struggled all through, even if they got through for two goals. They were still in contention at the break, just six points adrift, but once Spa opened the throttle in the second half with sweeping upfield movements, Geneveguilla could not stem the flow of scores.
Two goals gave Gneeveguilla some hope but Spa went into overdrive. Their eyes are firmly set on lifting the O’Donoghue Cup.
Dr Crokes 0-16 • Legion 1-10
There were just three points in it at the end, but Crokes were always on top, even though a splendid Rob Leen goal in the 35th minute brightened Legion’s hopes.
With so many established key players unavailable through injuries, Dr Crokes boss Brian McMahon had to start some fringe players and they delivered big time.
Kerry player Tony Brosnan, well policed in general play by veteran Podge O’Connor, gets the headlines scoring eight points (six from frees), but
speedster Mikey Casey excelled in the other corner kicking four splendid points from play in a Man-of-theMatch performance.
In defence, the standout player was Mark Fitzgerald. The long-striding right corner back won several turnovers, turning defence into attack.
Legion had to line out without the injured Darragh Lyne and Crokes put over four early points, whereas the Legion kicked so many bad wides and had to wait until the 14th minute when Jamie O’Sullivan scored their first point.
They trailed two points to eight at the interval and did improve early in the second half with Cian Gammell prominent. Crokes were down to 14 men when Daithí Casey was black-carded. Casey was hugely influential, as was the other Crokes veteran Kieran O’Leary who had a splendid game. However, having kicked a great point, he failed to track back Rob Leen, who sallied upfield to deliver a fine goal. Game on just six minutes after the interval.
Crokes were unfazed and asserted control. Kerry sub Micheál Burns was introduced for the final quarter, his first action in four months after being out with a back injury. He fired a great shot for a goal, but former Kerry player Brian Kelly made a brilliant save.
Referee Pádraig O’Sullivan did fine with two teams playing in a sporting manner. However, it is my contention that he erred on two important decisions, misinterpreting the official rule regarding the black card.
The black card is for a cynical behaviour foul committed, such as deliberately pulling down an opponent, or deliberately tripping an opponent with the hand, arm, leg, or foot.
It was brought in as a response to Tyrone’s Seán Kavanagh, who hauled down a player about to score a goal.
A black card and 10-minute sin-bin are then given with no substitute.
Early into the second half, Daithí Casey tried to tackle an opponent, an innocuous foul at worst, right in the middle of the pitch. He was issued with a black card, where at worst a ticking off or a yellow card would be the sensible call. Yet later in the game, Mikey Casey
was hauled down within a yard of the penalty area, with a real goal-scoring opportunity. Yellow card. GUBU. I was baffled.
The East Kerry Intermediate Championship (Fr Galvin Cup) semi-final between Scartaglen and Listry takes place this Saturday, December 10 at 2pm in Scartaglen. The winners will play Fossa in the final the following Saturday, December 17. Meanwhile, the medal presentation dinner for East Kerry’s senior and U21 championship-winning teams will be held Friday, January 6 at the Killarney Heights Hotel, and the Dr O’Donoghue Cup All-Star banquet is on February 2 in the Gleneagle Hotel.
The East Kerry Board Convention is fixed for Tuesday, February 7 at the Killarney Heights Hotel.
Best of luck to Kerins O’Rahillys, Rathmore and Fossa in their Munster Club finals this weekend. I expect all three to be crowned Munster champions.
Strand Road have a wonderful opportunity to win their first senior Munster Club title now that Nemo Rangers and Clonmel Commercials are out. They should beat Newcastle West, but I believe that is as far as they will progress. Rathmore ran up a massive score last time out in Páirc Uí Chaoimh and I expect them to be crowned Intermediate champions in Mallow.
Patrons have a very attractive double bill at Mallow where Fossa also bid for glory in the Junior. They will need the Clifford brothers to produce their normal high-octane performances, but the O’Shea brothers Emmett and Tadgh did most of the scoring in the semi-final. They are also competent in defence, especially goalkeeper Dan Cronin and the team captain and fullback Cian McCarthy.
Croker will be a bridge too far for Rahillys, but Rathmore and Fossa can go all the way.
All-Ireland club glory is very special, as Dr Crokes discovered when they won their first All-Ireland Senior Club title in 1992. The friendships forged in titanic battles en route to lifting Andy
Merrigan Cup have endured for that panel. The same great bond continued through the succeeding years and the whole group stuck together for frequent reunions.
They will have their reunion again tomorrow (Saturday), 30 years after that All-Ireland final triumph. Thankfully the full complement of players from the 1992 panel are alive and in great health. All-Ireland medals are fitting symbols of victories, but players will always recall that the greatest gifts of all are the enduring lifetime friendships from glory days, fadó, fadó.
I didn’t know the late Marie Murphy personally, but I am well aware of the sporting prowess of this lovely lady, who died unexpectedly last weekend following a car accident.
She was a tireless worker for every activity in her beloved Fossa parish. She forged the way for the current illustrious Clifford brothers. Fossa had a particularly good ladies football team in the seventies and it was no surprise that she played on the very first team that beat Cork in Banteer in 1976, alongside Mary Geaney and others whom I wrote about on these pages during Covid lockdowns.
Marie went on to star at centre back as Kerry won their first All-Ireland football title.
The Kerry football DNA was very strong in Marie’s genes. Her father John played with Kerry in the 1940s and her grandfather ‘Con of the 100 Battles’ starred with Kerry in the early 1900s.
Mary was the powerhouse behind the successes of the Fossa ladies club and when her playing days were over, she continued to contribute enormously to all aspects of life in her beloved Fossa parish. May she rest in peace.
The death of Kevin Kilmurray, the Offaly star footballer, was not unexpected after fighting a heroic battle with health issues over the past two years.
Kevin passed away on Sunday last.
An All-Ireland winner with Offaly in 1971 and again in 1972, we had the good fortune of playing together with UCD in the early seventies, managed by Eugene McGee.
You knew that if you could get the ball anywhere in the vicinity of the centre forward position, Kilmurray, the undergraduate agricultural student,
would make it count. Strong and as tough as táthfhéileann, my abiding memory was the man with the fine mothall of long black hair taking Route 1 to goal. Then that delightful accurate punt kick always found his colleagues.
Kevin did not score that often, but he created the space and the opportunities for his forwards to nail the score.
Pat Griffin played the same role with Kerry, but the late great Pat had the added delightful jinks and twinkle toes that bamboozled every centre back.
Kevin was a very loyal club man with his native Daingean, even though he
spent most of his life in Dublin where he was a very successful businessman providing artificial turf swards for sports grounds and complexes all over Ireland.
He was very disciplined and that was a key trait when he took over the management of the Offaly team. They had highs and lows including a strike by the Offaly players.
He was also a very keen golfer. He was as competitive as ever on the course, getting down to a low handicap of single figures.
When Offaly were struggling to appoint a manager to the county sen-
ior football team in 1976, Kilmurray convinced County Board chairman Fr Sean Heaney to put in journalist Eugene McGee as manager because he knew the management skills of the Longford native. Offaly broke new ground with a priest as chairman and an ‘outsider’ as team manager. That was really a no-no at the time, and it was to cost Kerry deeply in 1982 when the McGee-managed Offaly snatched the five-in-a-row from Kerry at the very death.
From that great Offaly team of 1971 and 1972, Larry Coughlan, Kieran Claffey, Mick O'Rourke, Paddy Fen-
ning and now Kevin Kilmurray are deceased. Members of the Kerry team of the same era who have passed away are the O’Donoghue brothers from Ballylongford (Paud and Eamon), Liam Higgins and Pat Griffin.
Kevin was a totally committed competitor in any game he played in any code. When you shook hands after the referee’s final whistle, the affable, gregarious number 11 was mad for the craic. Happenings during the game were left there, as they should be. He was a decent skin and great company.

RESULT: Killarney Athletic U16 B 3 Listowel Celtic B. Athletic opened the scoring 25 mins into the first half from Eoin Murphy. Listowel replied later on the in the first half to make it one a piece. Second half begun and both teams went all at it. Athletic scoring first from Matthew Pfister and Listowel replying with another. 2 all with about 20 mins to go. Athletic took the lead once again from Matthew. 10 mins to go Athletic were in the lead and looking to secure all 3 points but in the last few minutes Athletic got reduced to 10 men. Dying seconds in the match and Listowel came back and scored making 3 all.
U14 DIVISION 2: Killarney Athletic 3-0 Inter Kenmare. Our young blues made the journey to Kenmare today in search of their second win of the season in their last game before Christmas. Athletic started the better and their early pressure paid off with Brendan McHugh scoring a brilliant goal to settle us down. More and more chances were being created by Ryan Twomey and Jack Fleming but credit to the Kenmare keeper who pulled off some unbelievable saves. We went into half time 1-0 up. The boys came racing out the blocks in the 2nd half and piled the pressure on and eventually made it pay with James O’Callaghan getting our second goal of the day. The blues didn’t ease off as our midfield of Jason, Mark and Alan dominated the midfield to sustain our attacks. Brendan sealed the win with our 3rd of the day to make it a well deserved win.

U16 DIVISION 2: St Brendan's Park C 3-6 Mastergeeha C. Another good win for our young U16 C team on Saturday evening under the lights in Tralee. There were goals galore in a very entertaining game. Jack Ahern started it all off with a great strike after only 2 mins. Our lead was short-lived as Park equalised after 10 mins. We created a number of good chances and we were rewarded with Milosz Niezgoda slotting home a penalty. We made a few positional changes at half time which worked a treat with Zach Cronin's powerful running resulting in him slotting home 2 goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. They were either side of Park's second goal. Patrick O’Riordan coolly finished our 5th and Ronan O'Connor made it 6 with a fine strike. Park scored a third with a few minutes to
go. All of the squad got plenty of minutes and played their part. Thanks to St Brendan's Park for a sporting game.

BOYS U14 NATIONAL CUP: MEK 0 Mungret Regional 0 AET (MEK win 3-1 on Penalties). In a great national cup match versus Mungret Regional, the two teams played their hearts out with honors even after normal time 0-0. Extra time then took place with both sides having great chances, honors reminded even, and we proceeded to penalties. MEK were outright winners 3-1 with Brian Hurley making 2 great saves. All of the squad played their hearts out with Brian Hurley displaying a man of the match performance in goals. Thanks to Mungret for a fantastic game and well done to MEK .
BOYS U14 DIVISION 2: Listowel Celtic 4 MEK 0. Tough day at the office for our U14 second team who lost 4-0 at Listowel Celtic. Two down at half-time, MEK were on the ball for large parts of the second half but couldn't avail of the chances before Listowel struck with two speculative shots deep into the game to double their lead. Dara Whelton, Dara Tangney, Oisin Walsh and Breandán Allman showed strongest for MEK but man-of-the-match goes to keeper James O'Reilly who put in a solid shift but could do little to keep out Listowel's strikes.
BOYS U16 DIVISION 1: MEK 3 Inter Kenmare B 0. Goals in the second half Noah O’Shea 2 and Kevin Coffey 1. MOTM Diarmuid Quirke at centre back. Good allround performance by all.

EAST KERRY SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP: Semi-Final – Dr Crokes 0-16 Legion 1-10. We managed to edge a victory over our
town rivals in a good sporting contest in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday last. We were quick out of the block with Tony Brosnan opening the scoring in the first minute. We led 4 points to no score after 11 minutes of play. We continued to hold this lead for the entire game. Half time score 0-08 to 0-02. Our opponents came out fighting in the second half, scoring 1-01 after just 3 minutes of play. Our luck was tested in the 36th minute when Daithi Casey was black carded for pulling down an opposing player. Thankfully Legion did not take advantage of the extra man and we continued to challenge their defence. Credit must be given to our star men Mikey Casey, who scored 4 points from play and Mark Fitzgerald for his role in defence. Final score 0-16 to 1-10. We now face Spa in the East Kerry Final on December 18.
