A Killarney man has amazingly managed to avoid the brunt of not one - but two - major COVID-19 outbreaks in two different countries 5,000 miles apart. | By Michelle Crean

In February, Mike Keogh (27) of O’Sullivan’s Place Killarney came home from Shanghai – which is about 700km from Wuhan in China - just as the outbreak began there.

And, just as the health crisis was beginning to take hold in Ireland, Mike

returned to China as they began preparations to go back to normal after the heath crisis began to subside.

This week he says he was lucky to leave both countries just as they were each on the brink of the worst part of the global pandemic taking hold.

“I was the last out of Shanghai, I left a week before they locked down the

Diversions were in place and roads were closed near Flesk Bridge as members of the Gardai, Killarney Fire and Rescue Service, ambulance crews and a water rescue team attended the scene.

Two trained negotiators communicated with a man who was in a distressed state for over two hours.

Roads in the area were closed for the duration with traffic coming from the Muckross area diverted towards Mill Road and traffic leaving the town centre diverted towards Woodlawn Road.

Roads were reopened by 2.30pm and emergency services, who were on the scene since just after 1pm, were stood down.

Before the Irish lockdown, the English teacher, who had been teaching his classes online, left Ireland on March 9 as China expected schools to reopen.

“On March 11, China banned flights from France where I just connected from. The plane was very surreal as it was mostly Chinese with masks, some with hazmat suits. Arriving in Shanghai was a little nerve racking. They disinfected the flight and asked anyone from Italy to get off first where they checked them to make sure they were illness free or had any symptoms. Then we proceeded to use either the WeChat or Alipay Apps to show where we had been the last couple of weeks and at this point Ireland was on the OK list until two days later.”

He said that he was asked where he had been, to declare if he had been in contact with anyone with the disease, and they took his phone number to contact him if anyone else showed symptoms.

“I had my temperature checked four times in the airport and was given the

all green to go back to my apartment and I self-quarantined for two weeks."

He said he feels Ireland needs to step up its preventative measures especially going forward as it begins phasing in the reopening of businesses.

“The introduction of automated hand sanitisers in major public areas are a great feature in supermarkets and shopping centres. Every bar and restaurant here, the servers, bartenders, cooks and managers, are all wearing masks the entire time. We need to look at the countries getting out of this and see what is working.”

Library may not reopen

by June date | By Sean Moriarty Killarney library may not be able to reopen on June 8 – the proposed date of the second phase of the Government’s roadmap to reopen the country – due to social distancing measures.

Last Friday the Government stated that public libraries could reopen on this date.

However, it is impossible to reopen Killarney’s library as the staff there will not be able to implement social distancing measures to protect themselves and the library’s members.

“This is a considerable loss from the point of view of getting books and of meeting others in a social and relaxing setting. The library is doing everything possible to facilitate people in relation to book supply,” Mayor Michael Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser.

According to Kerry County Council, they said they are currently considering the implications for all of its services, including the library service, and having regard to the advice and guidelines of the public health authorities.

Meanwhile, the Mayor has asked Killarney Municipal District to fly the Town Hall’s flag at half-mast today (Friday) as a mark of respect to those who have died from COVID-19.

Council confirm road improvements for 2020 | By Sean Moriarty Despite the current crisis Kerry County Council has confirmed it will carry on with essential road repairs in the county.

Elected members of Killarney Municipal District were told of the decision via an online meeting on Wednesday morning.

An additional meeting will be held next week to determine programme of works for the year ahead.

the Government has made available the finance that will allow for a comprehensive schedule of works to be undertaken,” Mayor Michael Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser.

"There are roads that urgently need resurfacing and there are also many roads waiting a long time for upgrading through a Local Improvement Scheme.

It is of vital importance that the quality of roads in Kerry are maintained to the highest possible standard for the benefit of local people and for the vitally important tourist industry.”

Vandals destroy Killarney innovation centre Monica plans 20k steps a day for €20k this May One of the founders of Killarney Technology Innovation Centre has condemned acts of vandalism at the facility that has caused thousands of euro of damage. | By Sean Moriarty The centre, located near Gaelscoil Faithleann in Deerpark, has been a gathering point for youths engaging in anti-social behaviour.

Underage drinking and other illegal activities are regular occurrences at the site – especially since COVID-19 restrictions has led to the reduction of other facilities for younger people in the area.

Earlier this week there was an attempt at breaking into the centre which led to the damage of a skylight, and areas outside the facility were trashed in an act of vandalism.

Former town councillor, Seán Counihan, the current management committee chairman, was one of the leading lights behind the centre opening in 2017.

He said they will now be stepping up security measures at the site to prevent further incidents.

“We have the situation under control from a building perspective, and will, on advice from our security firm, incorporate security cameras. The guards will patrol the area too,” Mr Counihan told the Killarney Advertiser.

“The centre continues to operate as normal. No internal damage was inflicted inside the building, but this behaviour has incurred damage to a private registered company and is unacceptable.”

Superintendent Flor Murphy this week said that since the incident they have increased patrols in the area "on account of reports of young lads hanging around there".

| By Michelle Crean One Rathmore woman has come up with her own fundraising plan – walking a phenomenal 620,000 steps in the month of May. Monica Sheehan, a retired Director of Nursing with the HSE, is currently walking 20,000 steps every day for the month of May and is hoping for public support to raise €20,000 for the Kerry Hospice and Palliative Care Services, which she has been involved with since 1991.

In the present climate many charities have had to cancel fundraising events and some are finding it difficult to meet their funding requirements for the foreseeable future. This is why Monica came up with her own unique fundraiser.

She realises that the present crisis is proving to be financially challenging for many people. However, she would appreciate any little support you can afford to help her reach her target of €20,000.

“The Palliative Care Services in Kerry deliver a quality caring and compassionate service of very high standard to families and patients,” Monica said.

“It is essential that the Kerry Hospice funding is maintained during the COVID-19 pandemic. I urge people to give what they can. Thanks very much for the support we have received already.”

The people of Kerry have always been fantastic supporters of Kerry Hospice, Pat Doolan, Chair of the Kerry Hospice Foundation Killarney Branch added.

Woodlawn residents finally let loose as “cocooning” ends | By Michelle Crean

Woodlawn residents couldn’t help but celebrate on Tuesday morning as they marked “being let loose” from their home as Government restrictions eased slightly.

“They are the best neighbours ever”

Countess Grove resident Helen McCarthy is this week still elated by a birthday surprise organised by her neighbours. | By Michelle Crean The lockdown meant that she’d have no party or even a family meal to mark turning 70 – however, her neighbours had other ideas and instead surprised her on Sunday with a cake, balloon and even organised their other neighbour, photographer Eamonn Keogh, to take a photo 'social distance' style!

“They’re the best neighbours ever,” Helen told the Killarney Advertiser.

“It was my COVID-19 birthday.”

She explained that the neighbours were cocooning for the last few months and every day at 12pm meet up for a natter.

“I’ve lived here for 47 years, since 1973.

Helen’s daughter Lisa, who works as a frontline nurse in the UK, had originally planned to come home for the May 3 birthday until the outbreak of the virus.

Instead she organised a Zoom call between family members, including Helen’s brother David and his family in Kilcummin, where she is originally from, her brother John and his family in Artigallivan, and her nephew Sean Fleming from Killarney who is now living in Australia.

She also celebrated at home with her husband Dermot and sons Blaine, Andrew and Padraig.

“Friends sent cards and gifts. I thought I’d have no birthday over COVID-19 but it turned out to the best birthday ever.”

The over 70s from the estate were thrilled that “cocooning” was finally over and they can now go as far as 5kms from their home after months of lockdown which began in mid-March.

And one way to mark the occasion – which will surely go down in the history books in time – was to capture the moment on camera as Pam Brosnan, Chair of Woodlawn Residents Association alongside neighbour Eileen Tucker held up a sign ‘butterflies let loose’ on the green, accompanied by other neighbours as local photographer Valerie O’Sullivan captured the moment.

“In fairness to us “cocooners” or “butterflies” as I like to call it, it’s not necessarily what we wanted but we can get out now which is great,” Pam (71) told the Killarney Advertiser.

“The fact I can sit into the car and go to Port Road, that has been a great relief.

My husband Tim and I went for a drive around the town on Tuesday just to see if it was still there!”

She said COVID-19 has changed all our lives but that in some ways it has been for the better.

“I never knew there were so many people living alone in the estate. Without a shadow of a doubt it has brought the community together. There’s certainly a community spirit brought about by this, a kindness. It took the Coronavirus to get the community back together. The difference in the park is everyone is concerned about each other.”

She added that the regular presence of the community Gardai has been very welcome.

“Our community Gardai have been fantastic. They have been checking in on us to see if we needed anything, nothing has been too small for them.”

And what she misses most is hugs from her grandchildren.

“I don’t think I’ll let them go when I can hug them again!”

The Woodlawn musician rose to prominence in 2014 when he took part in hit TV talent spotting competition ‘The X Factor’.

Since then he has released a number of singles, including a song in support of the Kerry football team ahead of last year’s All-Ireland football final against Dublin his godfather is former Kerry start Eoin

Brosnan.

His latest single ‘Times Like This’ is fitting, given the current crisis.

The song is now on several radio scheduled playlists in Australia, USA, Spain, Tasmania, UK, BBC RADIO, New Zealand, Mexico, Canada, Eire.

He has submitted songs for the Irish entry to the Eurovision Song Contest, which was due to take place next weekend (May 16) in Rotterdam Holland.

Ballyhar woman and daughter win Reeks District luxury adventure break A Ballyhar woman and her daughter will enjoy a post-lockdown luxury adventure in the Reeks District after their video won a Facebook competition organised by the tourism agency. | By Michelle Crean Annie Rose Vogels, supervised by mom Maureen Hegarty-Vogels and dad Thys Vogels, took on the challenge of creating a video of how they could complete the Reeks District Big Five Challenge during lockdown after a selection of Big Five Adventurers posted an appeal for people to try and better their own efforts from a video campaign launched in mid-April.

As soon as restrictions are lifted, the pair will get to enjoy their prize that includes the cream of Irish adventure activities, including climbing Carrauntoohil, kayaking on Caragh Lake, cycling the Ring of the Reeks, surfing on Inch Beach and taking part in an after-dark SUP adventure on Lough Cloon. Throughout they will get stay in lakeside luxury at Carrig Country House and dine in some of the region’s best restaurants such as Ard Na Sidhe Country House on Caragh Lake and Killorglin’s Sol Y Sombra.

The Big Five Lockdown Edition competition was launched in mid-April when adventure tourism companies in the Reeks got together to create a fun video showcasing how they were keeping their adventure spirits up during the COVID-19 crisis. Their video was seen by more than 30,000 people who were challenged to create their own version of the film – and two of the entries were chosen for the final reckoning in a battle to see which effort got the most Facebook ‘likes’.

After five days of keen voting as the finalists mobilised their friends and family to vote, Maureen and Annie’s version held a narrow 831-764 victory over the entry from fellow finalist Kilcummin-based Geraldine O’Halloran and her family. In total, the two videos were seen more than 10,500 times.

Pieta House needs urgent funding to survive | By Sean Moriarty This weekend should have been the biggest fundraising event of the year for Pieta House, instead, the mental health charity is fighting for its own existence.

In the early hours of tomorrow (Saturday) 250,000 people across the world, including Killarney, would be walking together highlighting the fight against suicide and self-harm.

The annual Darkness Into Light charity walks are the main annual source of funding for Pieta.

However, due to the ongoing global pandemic, this year’s walks cannot go ahead as planned but Pieta House is hopeful replacement events can run on October 3.

Darkness Into Light is now a worldwide event but the Killarney early morning walk was the first such event outside Dublin.

Muckross woman Marie O’Carroll, has spearheaded ‘Nathan’s Walk Darkness Into Light’ since 2011 to remember her son Nathan who was only 14 when he took his own life.

The charity said that the cancellation of all the fundraising events has resulted in a loss of €6.5m.

Pieta House has been forced to cut staff salaries by up to 30 percent and announced 28 redundancies for clinical support workers.

The organising committee of the London event is Killarney woman Tara Cronin.

“We were sorry that the walk cannot take place tomorrow in London,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “We now have two walks in London and have started the planning for October already. Locally we have had great support for our charity partner Immigrant Counselling and Psychotherapy here in London that provides a similar service to Pieta. We will be showing our support for Pieta and the Sunrise appeal.”

Prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, the public need for Pieta’s services was on the increase, with calls to Pieta’s helpline up 49 percent year on year while text messages to Pieta had increased by 46 percent. The funds raised from Darkness into Light helps to keep Pieta centres open, offering free therapy, the 24/7 helplineline, and education and

outdoor adventures are here waiting for them as soon as restrictions are lifted.

The Reeks District would like to offer a huge thanks to all who made this happen; our Adventurers who created their own videos with such great enthusiasm, all the businesses who have helped provide the prizes, the public who watched and voted in the Grand Final and, of course, our two finalists for their great videos.”

In 2018, over 8,000 clients were supported with face-to-face therapy by Pieta experts. Since 2006, over 40,000 people received support from intervention and bereavement counselling services.

Instead of its annual Darkness Into Light walk, the charity is asking supporters to get up at 5.30am and watch the dawning of the day together.

“As a result of COVID-19, our helpline has seen an increase in calls from people who are in crisis, with many others presenting with high anxiety. Funding from the public has never been more vital to keep Pieta’s door open, ensuring we can continue to support those in their darkest hours and to keep delivering our one-to-one counselling,” said Elaine Austin, CEO of Pieta. “While we are devastated that we won’t come together physically on Saturday morning, we will share a special moment of togetherness by getting up at 5.30am and watching the sun rise. We would also appreciate if people can wear yellow or a previous year’s t-shirt, to show support for those impacted by suicide.”

When Muckross Abbey was unoccupied during the mid-18th century, a man known as John Drake made the abandoned building his home. He slept in a bed made from old coffin boards, in the recess of the Abbey’s fireplace, and wind-proofed the nearby window with earth and rubbish.

He never revealed his business, where he came from, or why he chose to live as his did and was met with equal amounts of curiosity and respect by locals.

“He was said to be under 40 years of age, refined in nature and 'scholarly' in appearance. He never discussed his past, his plans or his reasons for adopting this unusual abode,” Mayor Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser. “He never asked for alms and was never known to eat in any dwelling other than his own.

He had enough money to buy some

food and indeed was known to give a halfpenny and his prayers to any person who seemed more destitute than himself.”

He lived in the Abbey for 11 years until one day he disappeared without trace.

“One day in late springtime, John was nowhere to be seen. Just as suddenly as he had arrived to the Abbey he had now disappeared. His 'bed' lay unruffled, but nothing else remained. John had gone quietly into the dark night and was never again seen in Muckross or heard of elsewhere,” added Cllr Gleeson. “The mystery of the unusual life of John Drake in Muckross remains just that - a mystery of a quiet and gentle man who arrived unannounced and departed without trace.”

Some years later a young woman arrived to Killarney looking for the man.

Very little is known of the woman, she was reputed to be a foreigner and visited the Abbey and seen to be weeping at Darke’s fireside bed.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

Tough questions need to be asked as we move forward There is an exam atmosphere around at the moment – although there may be no exams.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar on Friday signed off on a road map that will get us out of house arrest, but had to consult his notes on the important question touching on over 70s cocooning.

I detest the word "cocoon", but it was Leo who introduced it, remember?

When would family members be allowed visit loved ones over 70 coming to the end of their lives, Ryan Tubridy asked Leo on The Late Late Show.

“I’ll have to pull out my . . . I haven’t actually learned it all yet,” said Taoiseach Varadkar. “It’s hot off the press.”

There is some praise for him for being honest enough to consult his notes.

My unease though is with how little in charge this caretaker Government is and how little Leo knew of this important topic.

We have put the medics in charge, and the unelected Government - a Government which refuses to even talk to one of the three big parties elected last February - is simply rollicking along with medical advice. Solely.

STORING UP PROBLEMS Except this nation is not a hospital dealing with a single virus – this country is made up of people of all age groups with a variety of physical and mental health needs. We are storing up huge problems because we have

Localising numbers in towns and parishes is needed I think the war metaphor introduced by Macron in France is unfortunate. It has determined the “fight” and – there is a big shrug by the all-male choir in charge when the importance of hair and self-care is raised.

People surviving the virus are lauded by the media as “beating the virus” – as if those who die don’t put up a fight.

There is the daily body count. Do we need this? Ireland versus the UK, the UK versus Italy, as if this were some kind of boys' World Cup. Here, it is beginning to sound like an

inter-county final with daily updates of numbers of cases per county. Dublin versus Kerry, Cork versus Kerry! Soon we will have parish against parish. In fact localising it properly in towns and parishes might make a lot more sense because we should know where the clusters are. We have a right to know to safeguard ourselves, I would suggest.

But the attitude of those in charge is a bit like the old medics' approach - people can’t be trusted with information.

It seems I have a lot more faith in the decency and intelligence of ordinary people.

The grass is not being cut in Killarney.

Dog fouling around town and in the parks – Cllr Niall O’Callaghan highlighted this – is at epic levels. The schools are out but are teachers still being paid full salaries? At the same time seasonal workers can’t get the COVID-19 payment. What plans are there to cut the far too generous salaries we now award the higher public sector in this country?

SAME OLD DING-DONG Well, it will be a decision for Government, won’t it? Except this will not be a Government of the people. This will be the same old ding-dong with the Greens as the vegan sandwich to be chewed and not swallowed - and spat out when convenient by the big two.

The real Government, the change people voted for in droves last February, should have been a mix of Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael. But no, we are to have the three wise and weak-voiced men; Varadkar, Martin and Ryan. We cannot trust a woman, especially an intelligent woman like Mary Lou, now can we?

REAL LEADERSHIP

Yet in countries where elected women are in charge, the action on COVID has been decisive and smart. Take New Zealand and Jacinda Ardern. Same Meanwhile it was a delight to hear Breeda-Moynihan Cronin, strong voiced and to the point on Radio Kerry. It had slipped me but Breeda is Chair of the Duhallow IRD, and they have never let their older community down in North Cork and East Kerry. In what is one of the first studies in the country, people forced to “cocoon” – and like me Breeda detests that word – feel abandoned, a burden, and are afraid of dying alone, IRD Duhallow has found.

Ageism at the heart of this pandemic is something this column has tried to reveal. By the way, IRD Duhallow are dealing with almost one thousand calls a week. Poorly funded, this partnership like others could do with being placed on a firmer footing. And its model of cross-county energy needs to be looked at.

size as us, same population and quicker action. No Cheltenham there, no Italian Rugby, no medics coming back from skiing holidays in Northern Italy or Austria and not self-isolating…no messing with the 14 day quarantine.

No dithering over a border. Few cases and fewer deaths than us. This week Ardern held Ireland up as the model of what could have gone wrong for NZ. We shall see how long the three card trick act without the queen of hearts will last. Meanwhile, I look forward to carbon taxes, no fires in the grate and wolves on Mangerton. Already, the big Green idea of car sharing cannot stand up, given the obligation to social distance. I hope the wolves go the same way.

There is opportunity in every crisis The emergence of Kerry Tourism Industry Federation (KTIF) - this week in the national media - with solid sensible ideas for the safeguarding of the tourist industry which may be used as template for the whole country, is a step in the right direction.

We need solid people such as these with industry backgrounds who are not afraid of speaking out at this difficult time. A county wide body, KTIF is Killarney led by Liebherr MD Pat O’ Leary.

It is high time Killarney got back into the honours league where they belong - and spoke directly as leaders nationally.

Now is the chance and it is a fine beginning by KTIF. Their call for post-COVID specialised training for tourism is fetching. There is already a fine venue in St Finan’s.

Could it be leased or rented and could COVID be the first beginnings of a training college for tourism established there? A second thing that struck me as practical and sensible was a programme to attract tourists from other parts of Kerry.

There was, until recently, a long tradition of people from Listowel, Tralee and elsewhere heading to Killarney for the holidays. There is opportunity in every crisis.

Jobseeker payments expire

Rhona Buckley was due to return to work in a well-known Killarney hotel on March 20 - one week after the Government shut down the country - after spending the winter months drawing a weekly Jobseeker Allowance of €203.

Seasonal workers speak out as payment crisis continues Several seasonal workers from Killarney’s tourism and allied industries have spoken out against the gap in Social Welfare payments as a result of emergency measures put in place by the acting Government.

Last week’s Killarney Advertiser revealed that seasonal workers, particularly those working in the tourist industry, have been left short-changed by the systems put in place by the De Facto Government in early March.

Anyone who was in employment up to February 29 and who lost their jobs as a result of COVID-19 restrictions gets

€350 per week to replace their wages.

Seasonal workers, who should have been back in the workforce by midMarch are not entitled to this payment and, instead, will continue to draw their weekly Jobseeker payment, which in itself has a time-limit of nine months.

As a result, hotel workers are now facing a huge deficit in wages, many of them are already close to exceeding the nine-month time-limit and are coming under increased financial pressure. Others, who may have only been working part-time hours, but working nonetheless, can claim the full €350 COVID-19 payment.

Caught between borders Slovakian Zuzana Chamulova was due to return to work at a South Kerry hotel on March 30.

In late February she decided to return home for a short holiday to visit family but got stranded there when the Slovakian authorities shut their international borders.

As a result, she can neither claim COVID-19 nor Jobseekers payment as she is not in the country, but her own country won’t pay her either as she is a full-time resident of Ireland and has been paying into the Irish social welfare system since 2017.

“So, I am stuck in a country which is not my home anymore, with no money, with no chance to get safely back to Ireland,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.

“All my jobs were in hotels. My current job is seasonal and we were supposed to start on March 30, as most of the seasonal workers. Thanks to the pan-

She was not entitled to the COVID-19 payment as she was not working on the cut-off date of February 29 and her Jobseekers Allowance will cease in July. After this, welfare payments are means-tested and she won’t qualify as her husband earns more than the €400 a week threshold as the result of his employment in a local factory.

“It makes me sick to my stomach when I go out and I hear people saying they hope this continues as they are much better off on the €350 COVID-19 payment than they ever were,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “I can't see the tourism industry getting back on its feet for the rest of this year, which in turn causes another problem for a lot of married women or men as you can only claim Jobseekers Benefit for

nine months. This means that because of COVID-19 many of us will remain out of work longer than the nine months, you can transfer to Jobseekers Allowance if your partner's income is less than €400. I, and a lot of others, will get nothing from the Government after July.”

Of course, every penny that comes out of the State's coffers will have to go back in and with thousands of people getting paid via the emergency COVID-19 payment system, as the State will need to balance the books in future years, including an increase in income tax rates and VAT on products and services.

“I'm sure when it comes to paying all this money back who will be hit with the bill? Us, the middle-income earners, we are the ones paying for everything and I'm sure we will be treated the same as everyone else.

There will be no exemption for us like they are exempting us now,” she added. “I urge the Government to help out the seasonal workers as we did not ask for this.”

Heroes and warriors

Another local worker, although not affected by the current payment discrepancy as he was working when the axe came down, says the Government never cared about the contribution seasonal workers make to Irish life.

Seamus Ryan, a bar manager in a town centre pub, says Ireland relies too much on the tourist industry but does not respect the people who work in the sector, even without the current crisis bringing their issues to the fore.

“Team-players to their fingertips, hospitality professionals are constantly

up-skilling, often spending the leaner winter months on courses for which they often self-finance,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

“No Irish Government can ever, ever adequately compensate, appreciate or financially reward these warriors on whose backs the State's coffers are annually filled to overflowing by foreign and domestic tourist spend.”

While the Killarney Advertiser is aware that local TD Brendan Griffin, the Junior Minister for Sport and Tourism, is campaigning at Government level on behalf of seasonal workers, his office did not respond to a request for an update on the situation.

demic situation we are still closed. And even better is I got stuck in Slovakia now. That means I am not entitled to get Jobseekers anymore because I am not in Ireland. Otherwise, life is great!”

Julie Goralka works in local B&Bs, but in a cruel twist of fate, she was not due to return to work this year until late March, having, in previous years, been called back in January.

“I feel the Government has left us without help. For example, my friend started working in January for two days a week she earned €150 per week because she

worked part-time. Now she has €350 a week as a COVID-19 payment because she worked before March 13,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.

“What is this justice? Of course, I do not blame my friend, only the system is bad. I worked years before March 13, but not this year so it does not count.

And someone who has never worked before but worked at least one day before March 13 has been offered help.”

Killarney businesses plan new measures as they prepare to reopen

A new inter-agency group has been established in Kerry to provide support and advice to businesses during the COVID-19 public health emergency.

New helpline launched for Kerry businesses impacted by COVID-19

The group is launched the new business support helpline which will be available to anyone in the retail, tourism, manufacturing, construction, services and other industries as a source of information and advice.

Led by Kerry County Council’s Economic Development Unit and Local Enterprise Office, the inter-agency group also includes representatives of Fáilte Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, Kerry Education and Training Board, Udarás na Gaeltachta and the local development companies, South Kerry Development Partnership, IRD Duhallow and North East and West Kerry Development.

The new helpline is now available on

1800 807 102 and will be available Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Director of Services for Economic Development with Kerry County Council, Mike Scannell, said the new committee recognises that the Kerry economy is being severely impacted by the COVID-19 emergency and will work with businesses in Kerry through the current challenges.

“Further to the Government’s National Action Plan on COVID-19, Kerry County Council initiated a series of meetings with key stakeholders and business leaders in the county,” he said.

“The new inter-agency group which has

followed from that is focussed on supporting businesses through the current climate and also beginning to chart how the business sector can recover when restrictions ease and the worst of this emergency is behind us.

“We want to ensure that the correct and most appropriate information is available to businesses and will coordinate the assignment of the most appropriate sources of support to business in need of assistance. So this new helpline is an important first step and our group will be looking at other meaningful and practical steps we can lead out on to help the economic recovery in Kerry

over the coming months and years,” he said.

Following this news, the Killarney Advertiser this week asked a number of local businesses what measures they plan to put in place when they reopen, and how they feel social distancing and other safety measures needed going forward will impact their business.

Health and safety is a priority | By Sean Moriarty Plans to reopen pubs on August 10 under social distancing regulations are unworkable and will cause businesses to close, according to several Killarney publicans.

All of the publicans the Killarney Advertiser spoke to were adamant that the health and safety of their staff and customers is a priority before any decision can be made in terms of reopening.

Social distancing measures will be impossible to implement in most pubs and even if a landlord was successful in creating sufficient space in a bar, it would be a recipe for a financial disaster.

Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan’s family have been running The Fáilte Hotel on College St for 50 years. The bar has the capacity for around 400 people, but under social distancing measures, only 24 or 25 people could be present in the bar at any one time.

“I would be trading myself into bankruptcy,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

“I would need to place door staff at the front and back doors and at the entrance of the men’s and women’s toilets for starters.”

So far, banks and suppliers have been lenient towards publicans and have not put pressure on bar owners to pay for stock or loans. However, once a bar starts trading again this period of leniency will end. Bar owners, despite not been open

for business, still have outgoings, insurance and utility contracts need to be honoured.

“We are between a rock and a hard place,” added Niall. “If one bar opens, I have to open, but if I open under these terms I will be bankrupt in five or six weeks. As soon as we open the banks and suppliers will be looking to get paid, but how can I pay them if I have only 25 people in the bar - I will be lucky if I can pay the staff.”

He, like many other publicans the Killarney Advertiser has spoken to, is calling for a Government aid package to save the pub trade. In the past the Government has bailed out agriculture, fisheries, the construction industry and even banks, and a similar programme needs to be put in place according to Niall.

“We have no issue staying closed, it is for the safety of everyone,” he added. "But the Government need to give us something to stay closed, a grant, they need to look at the big picture. Reopening will not work and cause pubs to close forever and then the Government will have to pay long-term unemployment to so many people.”

He also warned that sports clubs are at risk. Pubs tend to sponsor local teams and leagues, in his own case, The Fáilte is a long-time supporter of Killarney Celtic FC. “I won’t be able to afford it,” he said. “I can’t see Scott’s Hotel being able to support Lakers Basketball either.”

Tony McSweeney runs The McSweeney Arms Hotel and is Chairman of the Killar-

ney Vintners Organisation. The KFO acts as an event organiser in Killarney, but, unlike the county and national federations, is not a lobby group.

“We are puzzled and don’t know what we can do. I can’t see how table service can work,” he said. “The first thing we need to do to open a bar is to protect the staff and how can you do that with table service – assuming staff would want to work in such an environment. Even if we open all it takes is one post on social media that pubs are packed and we are back to square one. Are we even insured if someone gets it on our premises or is it an act of God?” Like his fellow publicans, he is calling for Government intervention to make proper decisions and save the pub trade.

“Rates need to be cancelled for the year, but I can't see pubs opening until its one hundred percent safe to do so and that applies to the smaller hotels too.”

Regardless of what date pubs can reopen, the trade will be vastly different from times past.

Kate O’Leary runs the Laurels Bar and Restaurant at Market Cross. Her pub is in a position to offer table service as she can use her adjacent restaurant but it will come at both a financial and a customer experience cost.

“The whole way we run our business will change, so going forward, staff costs against reduced turnover is a huge concern. Servicing the business will be far more laborious than before,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “Also, the whole pub atmosphere will be lost. We have to play the long game and hope that eventually we will return to some kind of normality.”

Hardware store to operate via the back door | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Hardware on Upper College St will reopen on May 18 - but customers will be required to enter the store via the delivery entrance at the rear rather than the front door.

Manager Anne Marie O’Sullivan Darcy says these measures are necessary to maintain social distancing rules in-store.

“It is the only way we could make space

available,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “But we are looking forward to some degree of normality and seeing all our customers again. I expect to be very busy, especially with paint.”

Killarney Hardware will also offer a free delivery service.

“Some people will be very cautious and we won't see some of our older customers for a long time,” she added. “We understand why they will be cautious, but we will be there for them and will deliver.”

Like most sectors, the motor industry is waiting on clearer Government guidance before full service can be resumed.

Mechanic workshops can re-open on May 18 but with certain social distancing rules in place to protect both staff and customers.

Mark Coyne runs a tyre and repair workshop on the Ross Road.

He has been open part-time for the last few weeks to accommodate emergency repairs and has used that time to put in place things like contactless and over

the phone payments.

His biggest concern is social distancing, not so much on how to implement it, but how to approach it on a personal level.

“If I tell someone to stand back, it is nothing personal, and people need to understand that,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is to protect me and to protect you, but it is easy to see why people could be insulted and I am afraid it would sound like I am accusing them of having the disease.”

Mark expects to be busy especially with breakdowns as many car batteries will have gone flat over the last few weeks from lack of use.

“People should start their cars and run them for 30 minutes at least once a week,” he added.

And he added that all businesses are feeling the financial pressure due to the current crisis.

“We are waiting to see what will happen about the rates. It could take a long time to pay it off.”

Expert to guide High Street jewellers on safety measures | By Michelle Crean Weddings and engagements may have been postponed for now – but one Killarney jewellers says plans are taking shape for reopening to the public.

Keanes Jewellers at number 2 High Street, is a third-generation family business, with stores in Cork and Limerick.

It has been part of the community for many decades, and after experiencing two recessions in the past, this crisis has been the worst the company has ever faced, explained Director Gerard Keane.

He said closing their doors for this long was incomprehensible months ago, but that it had to be done for the health and safety of their staff and the public. However, they have been lucky enough to keep the business going online – but said

it’s not the same as seeing jewellery up close.

“At Christmas we never thought we’d be facing something like this,” Gerard told the Killarney Advertiser.

The company closed all three shops on March 16 and told all 61 staff that they’d keep them on the payroll until June.

They’re currently on the Government’s COVID-19 payment with Keanes topping it up.

“We’ll do the best we can for as long as we can. We have six staff in Killarney, and they are part of the family.”

As restrictions for businesses begin to lift, he said that they have hired an expert to guide them on the appropriate safety measures to take before they can reopen their doors.

He said that they have to consider not just the safety of the customers but also their staff and this will include implementing

Boxing star in fight to save club | By Sean Moriarty The county’s brightest boxing prospect, Kevin Cronin, is this week calling on the public to save a boxing club which has fallen on hard times due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

INSPIRING: Photographer Trevor O’Donoghue from Killarney has set up a Facebook group which is uniting people all over the world.

Local online group unites communities worldwide One local photographer - who wants to support and help cheer people up at such an uneasy time - has been overwhelmed that his new community group has reached over one thousand people worldwide. | By Michelle Crean Trevor O’Donoghue, who has Cystic Fibrosis, has been a photographer for 15 years and is keen to share well-being and mindfulness techniques with others.

Recently he started running some day long Mindography workshops locally, and as peoples’ interest really started to grow, he created a Facebook group called ‘Pictures of Life’, which has really taken off.

Group members are enjoying the daily themes from ‘Sky’, ‘Morning’, ‘Nature’ and ‘No Face Selfie’ amongst others. Trevor explained that it’s not a photography competition, but about being in a community at a time of need.

“It is amazing watching it all unfold,” Trevor told the Killarney Advertiser.

“There are pictures being shared from all over the world and people don’t need a big camera to take a meaningful image.

He added that both himself and his fiancée Ciara wanted to help others.

“It is now scientifically proven that the health of our mind and body are both linked. With everything going on at the moment, we believe it is just as important for us all to look after our mental well-being as much as our physical bodies. We decided to run a free online Mindography course a few weeks back. It isn’t possible for us to help out in the community because we are in isolation, so after a bit of thinking we also decided to create the Facebook group and challenge for people to introduce them to what we are aiming to do,” he said.

“We are so happy we decided to do it and have well over one thousand people partaking, between the Facebook page and our community and it is growing every day, a big difference from the 40 or 50 we had expected. The creativity we are seeing is inspiring.”

Cronin, from Milltown, is ranked number one in the Republic of Ireland’s Fly Heavyweight division and is on the cusp of a professional career in the sport.

St Margaret’s Boxing Club, where he trains, is one of two clubs in Tralee, but it is on the verge of extinction as its limited income has completely dried up.

In the absence of a Killarney based club, Cronin could be left without one of his local training venues and fears for the future of the sport in the county as well the result the closure could have on his own professional career.

“We have to do something,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. "It is vital to keep it going. I train in Dublin and Tralee, and this

will be a big loss to the town as it gives kids something to do.”

The club has organised an online 10k social distancing run which has already generated nearly €800 including a donation from former Kerry football star Darran O’Sullivan.

Cronin hopes to run a professional training and sparring day in the future where boxing fans can pay for a one-on-one session with him and his coaches. Funds from this enterprise will be put back into the club, but he will have to wait until restrictions are lifted before it can go ahead.

Cronin is preparing for a professional bout against a yet unnamed opponent that will be broadcast on US sporting channel ESPN, subject to post-COVID-19 sporting permits.

“It is a great opportunity and I am going to use it to mention the club live on television to millions of fans,” he added.

END OF AN ERA: Colleagues gathered last Friday (May 1) to pay tribute to Donie Reen from Rathmore who retired from the local branch of Kerry Agri-Business after nearly 47 years of service.

Donie began work for the Dairy Disposal Board on December 31, 1973, the day before the depot was taken over by Kerry Co-op (now Kerry Group). At time it was a full active creamery and, among other things, produced cheese.

In more recent times the depot serves as a farm supply and hardware store serving the wider Rathmore community, not just exclusively the local farmers.

Students get creative to break the boredom

In a bid to break the boredom of lockdown, Killarney students decided to put their creative skills to the test, and organised a photography competition to capture the 'new normal' of life.

Based on the theme of 'Quarantine and Social Distancing', the Transition Year students from St Brigid's Secondary School in Killarney organised the competition for the other students in their year and let their imaginations run free.

And, as the photos show, they really got to grips with the theme using face masks and taking photos of staying apart, and in essence capturing the current restrictions faced by so many.

The Council said that connectivity with the UK, Europe and the rest of the world would be critical for Kerry as the economy returns to normal levels of activity in the months and years after the Corona-

You think of lean physiques, athleticism, strength, power, vitality right?

But do you think “that person is a better survivor than me?” or “that person has a buffer against an earlier death than me?”

Probably not, but why? Fitness, including strength, aerobic capacity and function are buffers against death.

Are you going to live forever? No. Nobody is.

But the current pandemic puts certain things into perspective.

I’m not trying to make a political statement, and I’m not here to argue with anyone. If you are happier when you don’t work out, I respect your decision even if I don’t agree with it.

Fitness isn’t political for me and it isn’t about aesthetics either. I work out because doing so makes me feel better mentally and physically. And I know that it will give me the best chance of living the life I want for as long as possible.

Fitness provides a host of benefits, but I’m not going to try and convince anyone. Science can do that.

Here’s what we know for certain: The Mayo Clinic says exercise improves moods, boosts energy, produces better sleep, and improves sex.

As if that weren’t enough, “regular exercise helps prevent or manage many health problems and concerns, including: stroke, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, depression, anxiety, many types of cancer, arthritis and falls.”

That’s an incredible list- with zero negative side effects. None. Pay particular attention to “metabolic syndrome” in the paragraph above. We’ll get to that in a minute.

So, if I wanted to give myself the best chance to overcome anything - from an accident to an infection to a bout of the blues and a lack of self-confidence - I’d choose fitness first. How much? About two to five hours a week. And if I wanted to increase my odds further, I’d eat more vegetables and less processed food.

Combined, those two simple steps can be life-changing.

COVID-19 AND FITNESS

Right now, the Coronavirus pandemic is causing widespread chaos and hardship.

It’s causing sickness, death and financial distress. It’s a global tragedy.

As doctors and researchers fight the disease, I’ve been interested to read what they’re discovering about fitness.

Again, let me be clear; I am not saying fitness cures or prevents COVID-19, nor am I saying “I told you so” to any group of people who don’t value fitness, but if you do work out, you should feel good about that decision.

You’ve given yourself the best chance to stay healthy.

From the University of Virginia; “regular exercise may reduce the risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome, a major cause of death in patients with the COVID-19 virus”, a top exercise researcher reports.

In a European Scientist article, Aseem Malhotra explained that poor public health before COVID-19 is making the effects of the disease worse. His most important point might be that obesity isn’t the only health concern.

“Normal weight metabolically unhealthy (people) have a more than three-fold risk of all -cause mortality and cardiovascular events than those who are normal weight and metabolically healthy.

There’s no such thing as a healthy weight, only a healthy person.”

Translation: Eating poorly can mess up your insides even if you don’t appear to be overweight or unhealthy.

Again, I’m not here to debate weight stigma or anti-fat bias.

Malhotra’s assertion isn’t that overweight people are more likely to die from COVID-19; it’s that people with metabolic syndrome are far more likely to die.

But there’s hope. Just as pollution levels and infection rates are dropping after only about six weeks of social distancing, people can rapidly improve their health by eating better and exercising.

“Given the speed at which health markers for metabolic disease improve from dietary interventions, an equally strong if not more significant population health message should now be to ‘eat real food … and save lives',” Malhotra wrote.

You can turn this around quite quickly If you’re reading this as a person who works out and eats well, you deserve a virtual high five. You’ve made wise investments in your health, and you’ve set yourself up to get through this tough period and most things life can throw at you.

LetsGetChecked, founded by law and business graduate Peter Foley, raised the funding to support its drive into testing the virus.

The Dublin-headquartered firm developed the two-part test that proves a result within 15 minutes and is then fol-

The company employs 250 people between Dublin and New York and has infrastructure that includes a certified lab in New York and a logistics network to enable it to address the challenge of mass testing.

The latest funding round, led by Illumina Ventures and HLM Venture Partners as well as new investors that include Deerfield, CommonFund capital and An-

geles Investments and exiting investors Transformation Capital, Optum Ventures and Qiming Venture Partners USA, will support the manufacturing and supply of test kits as well as scaling up its lab capacity and business operations in Europe and the US. The company also plans to expand supply and business operations, and support personnel across the United States and Europe.

Launch of Ireland’s national day of free creative activities This year’s Cruinniú na nÓg 2020, Ireland’s national day of free creative activities for children and young people under the age of 18 - launched this week - will now be available online.

Advice line expanded to Kerry National charity the Men’s Development Network has announced that it is extending its Male Advice Line into a seven day a week service to cope with increased demand as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and is in particular targeting men in the Kerry area to make contact with the service.

The freephone 1800 816 588 number is open from 10am to 6pm Mondays and Wednesdays, 12 noon to 8pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 2pm to 6pm Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

“While women are more severely impacted by domestic violence, men can also be

victims, and deserve both our sympathy and help,” Roisin Davies, who is one of the MAL counsellors, said.

“While this lockdown is not a cause of domestic violence or abuse, any situation that increases anxiety, fear, emotional or financial insecurity can create an environment where there is greater risk of violent, abusive and controlling behavior,” added Derek Smith, MAL supervisor.

The Men’s Development Network is also offering its counselling service via online and phone, as well as its MEND programme; a perpetrator intervention and partner support programme. For further information visit: www.mensnetwork.ie.

It’s part of the Government’s #InThisTogether campaign, the Creative Ireland Programme and RTÉ, with Josepha Madigan TD, Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht who is encouraging young people to answer the call to get creative at home and be ready to showcase their creative talents on Saturday, June 13.

In light of the public health restrictions currently in force, the Creative Ireland Programme and its partners have developed a number of creative, cultural and engaging “calls to action” which children, young people – indeed entire families – can create in their own homes and gardens.

Highlights will include; a Céilí in the Kitchen, Let's Go Fly a Kite, Become a Story Keeper and Create a Video Game App. “Creativity and culture are powerful means through which children and young people can explore communication and

collaboration, stimulate their imaginations to be inventive and harness their innate curiosity,” Minister Madigan said.

“Creativity also helps to encourage social responsibility and personal qualities related to well-being such as resilience, empathy, and a capacity for connection and friendship. Over the past two years Cruinniú na nÓg has been a key point in the calendar for children and young people to try something creative, develop an appetite for discovery and acquire new skills – and 2020 will be no different.”

Online supports and resources are being provided by the Creative Ireland Programme in partnership with Áirc Damhsa, The Design and Crafts Council of Ireland, Great Lighthouses of Ireland, Fighting Words, Whizz Kids Training and RTÉ to enable children and young people to unleash their creativity.

In addition, local authorities will also be hosting a range of cultural and creative activities and online events for Cruinniú na nÓg.

New educational science videos for kids AMBER, the SFI Research Centre for Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research at Trinity College Dublin, have launched a new digital learning experience for children across Ireland, who are at home as a result of the COVID-19 measures currently in place.

By adapting the Centre’s NanoWOW educational programme, AMBER researchers have created videos to teach children more about science, while they are at home.

Over a three week period on the AMBER website – at www.ambercentre. ie/nanowow – a variety of fun and educational videos will be made available.

The videos are aimed at children aged between 10 – 12-years-old but are also suitable for younger ages. Each video is presented by an AMBER scientist, or educator, so that children can learn about nanoscience direct from the people who know it best. Each video ties back to NanoWOW resources for parents and teachers to use when schooling at home, this includes presentations and details on investigations and

Local students reach final in National Environmental Awards ECO-UNESCO have announced that seven youth projects from Kerry – including one from Killarney - have reached the final of this year’s Young Environmentalist Awards.

Almost 500 applications were received, which is a record breaking number despite the COVID-19 interruptions.

ECO-UNESCO will be announcing the winner’s virtually on May 21 through YouTube live and social media platforms.

The Young Environmentalist Awards (YEA) recognises and rewards young people aged 10-18 who have taken environmental action and created projects

that will help solve environmental issues.

Some of the Kerry finalists include ‘Self-Sustainable Sem’ from St Brendan’s College, Killarney, ‘Bia Beo’ from Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí, and ‘Good Reason To Eat In Season’ from Sneem National School.

“We are delighted at the quality of applications this year and we cannot wait to announce this year’s winners,” Elaine Nevin, Director of ECO-UNESCO said.

ECO Week 2020 with a theme of ‘Food, Fitness, Fashion and your Future’, will be held from May 18 to 22 May, and will include a range of environmental workshops, well-being activities, talks, and challenges for young people alongside the YEA Winner announcements.

Most clothes can be altered into fabulous new items, which will save you a few Euro in the months ahead.

Alterations can be done to both women's, men’s and children's clothes, as well as to most household curtains and cushions. Communion dresses can be let out again, or a piece put into them, little suits can also be altered so they are ready for their communions and confirmation in the not so distant future. Get ready for all those weddings and other events where we all need to be looking our best.

You can keep the clothing items you want altered aside for now, send me pictures of the items you want to change, and I'll let you know what options you have. However, once May comes around, we can start digging, sowing, and planting!

One thing I often forget to do at this time of year is to feed my bulbs. Yes, they have gone yellow and sad looking, but give them a good splash of liquid feed, such as Phostrogen or MiracleGro, and it will be of great benefit to them. You may notice your clumps of daffodils, crocuses and particularly tulips becoming weaker over the years, producing more spindly greenery and smaller flowers. There are two factors causing this; the first, overcrowding. Ideally clumps should be split every three years, after flowering. Secondly, there can be a lack of nutrients. Bulbs need quite a lot of nutrients in order to bulk up and produce enough energy stores for the following season. They are still working away underground and there is a small window of opportunity to help them grow bigger bulbs for next year. Bigger bulbs equals bigger flowers.

May is the start of the busy season in the veg garden too – broad beans are in full flower in some gardens! Pinch out new, soft growth to deter blackfly, which can be a real problem. Planning ahead, start making supports for any climbing beans and peas – if you leave it too late it becomes impossible to train them without damaging them. Keep an eye out for mice as they like to eat peas and beans as the seed rehydrates. Pigeons can also cause problems, especially with young

brassica plants. Shelter fruit bushes from wind, especially the easterly winds we have been having. This is advice I am giving after my particular horse has bolted – as every baby gooseberry and current fruitling I had is gone.

Continue earthing up potatoes, and if you have any left to plant, do so soon as we are nearing the end of potato planting! Earth up when shoots are about 10–15cm, this will give you a much larger yield. Some organic fertiliser, moss peat or well rotted manure is also advisable to add as you earth up, as it is of greatest benefit now as they are growing. Sometimes we add these nutrients a little too late when there is not enough time for them to be absorbed into the soil and taken up by the roots.

Asparagus tips should be harvested as they appear. The ideal length at which to cut them is between 18-20cm. Be careful not to cut too many off, generally six per well established plant is the limit. If you planted your crown this year do not be tempted to cut any off and keep it to one or two next year. You will be expecting to let them mature for about three to four years before you can harvest a real crop! They are not the fastest crop you will ever produce, but it will be well worth the wait and you have the added satisfaction that your meal did not travel halfway around the world to get to your plate!

Fassbender documentary to broadcast Tuesday night One year on from his appearance on the Rally of the Lakes, local Hollywood A-lister Michael Fassbender will, on Tuesday, release an online documentary of his experience on the event.

The story follows Fassbender, a self-confessed petrol head, as he makes the transition from a circuit racer to a rally driver – two very different but closely aligned disciplines.

Prior to last year’s Rally of the Lakes, Fassbender had raced in Ferrari Challenge events in the USA. He made his race debut in 2017 and had completed to two Ferrari seasons before

making his rally debut this time last year.

He was named as the event’s ambassador as part of the event’s 40th anniversary celebrations and drove a Ford Escort Mk2 on iconic Killarney rally roads like Moll’s Gap. The documentary follows Michael’s progress in the rally, an event won by local rally star Paul Nagle.

Both are former pupils at Fossa National School but followed two different career paths which only crossed over for the first-time last May. The documentary will be released next Tuesday at 5pm on web-based channel Vero, a social media platform for film and documentary makers.

Preparing your car for returning to the road Local garage owners are advising motorists of a few simple tasks they can do at home to ensure they don’t suffer any unnecessary breakdowns as the restrictions are slowly being lifted across the country.

Many cars, especially those owned by elderly motorists or people who have been cocooning for personal reasons, have been lying idle since the end of March.

This week’s Government announcement regarding back to work procedures will have given loads of people something to look forward to but the suggested date of May 18 could prove to be very stressful if motorists don’t take some simple steps to ensure their car will start and perform in the day they are due to return to work.

“I would ask anyone who has not driven for a few weeks to take extra care on the roads when they do they go out,” Rathmore-based Peugeot dealer John Reen told the Killarney Advertiser.

"A lot of people are cocooning for eight weeks or more and it will take a bit of getting used to again.”

Fluid levels should be checked on all cars that have been lying idle; oil, coolant and water may have leaked or evaporated over the last few weeks and could be at a dangerously low level.

With cars potentially remaining dormant for weeks or months there is a risk of

battery failure. Owners should start and run their cars, when safe to do so, and be mindful of where exhaust fumes are heading, for at least 30 minutes every 10 days.

Flat batteries can cause further stress drained battery apart from the obvious, for example, a could disrupt the car’s central locking and could prevent access when you need it most. Some cars need a radio code to operate the in-car enter-

tainment system and a flat battery could result in the need to re-input a code.

“The battery is the obvious one,” he added.

"But handbrakes and clutches can seize too and people need to be mindful that a car could take a jump after it has been started for the first time. Many cars these days are fitted with electric handbrakes and they could be seized too.”

It is advisable to take the car for a short

run every few days and with the current restrictions now extended to 5k, there is no reason why you can’t take a slightly longer journey on your trip to the shops while still respecting the essential journey guidelines.

Hybrid car owners should switch on ‘Ready Mode’ for approximately 30 minutes every 15 to 20 days to keep the battery topped up.

Choosing Leaving Cert Applied was the right choice Student Victoria Huggard from St Brigid's Secondary School tells the Killarney Advertiser why the traditional Leaving Cert route didn’t suit her and how she has thrived on an alternative course.

Doing Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) was the best decision I have ever made. I began the traditional Leaving Certificate, and immediately disliked it. I lacked confidence and came to believe if I continued the traditional Leaving Certificate, I would discontinue school. So, I spoke to teachers and consequently learned a lot more about LCA. It sounded like it would suit me better. I decided on LCA because of the continuous assessment. I really enjoy doing projects. In addition, I would do four work experiences over two years.

The two experiences that meant the most to me this year were work experi-

ence and my role in the mini company.

I gained work experience in a music store called Variety Sounds and it was brilliant. This experience stood out to me for several reasons. I was nervous before starting as it was a totally new experience interacting with customers and working at the till. I didn’t have that much confidence but that soon changed. I quickly improved my communication skills by talking with customers and my leadership skills when looking after the store alone. I learned a lot about myself; that I am hardworking and determined. Another reason I really enjoyed working there was because I was surrounded by music for the day, which is one of my passions.

For the mini company, I was assigned the role of advertising manager. This experience stands out to me for many reasons. I was excited to try and run a successful business but it was a lot

harder than I expected. Some of the jobs I had to do were quite difficult, such as gathering findings from questionnaires which were sent to First Years and filling out the appointment book and cards. I had to take the lead and develop my leadership skills when gathering the questionnaire results, which I was nervous about at first, but I adjusted quickly. I made a questionnaire, designed the appointment book, cards and receipts, and made sure our logo was on all of them. Having been the advertising manager, I am now considering going into marketing and advertising in the future. I have improved my ICT skills, communication skills and become more confident in running a business.

I am so beyond happy that I chose LCA and I am looking forward to experiencing more next year. I really want to work hard and get a distinction in LCA.

CAO Change of Mind Facility now open

On May 5 at 12pm, the CAO Change of Mind facility opened to allow you to make changes to your course choices up to July 1, at 5.15pm.

Traditionally this has been the final deadline for applicants to make changes to course choices which meant that students had some time after the Leaving Cert finished to amend CAO options. The fact that the Leaving Cert has now been postponed to the start date of July 29 raises the obvious questions – will the Change of Mind date also be changed to allow a period of time after the exams are over for you to make changes to the CAO form? At the moment the CAO are holding discussions with the State Exams Commission about the expected revised timeline for Leaving Cert results. These discussions may result in a change to the July 1 deadline which is well in advance of the exams even starting. It is not ideal for you, but we await further confirmation in the coming weeks. For the time being you need to focus on revisiting your CAO application to ensure that you have included the courses that really interest you and that you have listed them in order of preference.

While the date may change, how the ‘Change of Mind’ facility actually works won’t. Log on to www.cao.ie to see their clear instructions on what you need to do to use the ‘Change of Mind’ and watch their CAO Change of Mind video guide before you start.

KEY FACTS ABOUT THE ‘CHANGE OF MIND’ FACILITY

• There is no charge for this facility • If you make a change online an acknowl-

edgement is sent to the email address used at the application stage. You can also log on to www.cao.ie/myapplication to check the application at any time.

• Some restrictions do apply, for example it is not permitted to add in most ‘Restricted’ courses at this stage.

• Submitting a Change of Mind cancels and supersedes all previous course choices. This means that whatever order you have your courses in on July 1 at 5.15pm is final.

• You are free to make changes to either your Level 8 or Level 7/6 list of courses or both categories if you so wish. Choices in the two categories are considered to be completely separate.

• If you do not wish to change your courses you don’t need to do anything, the original course choices remain unchanged.

KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER WHEN USING THE ‘CHANGE OF MIND’ FACILITY

The unprecedented level of uncertainty surrounding your Leaving Certificate exams has understandably increased stress levels so I urge all of you to take some time to think carefully about what courses you really want to study once you have put Leaving Cert of 2020 behind you.

When looking at your CAO application try as far as possible to take a step back and focus on your long term goals rather than what is going on in the world at the moment.

Ensure that you have researched thoroughly all courses that you include on the CAO (entry requirements, course con-

tent, work placement, career options) and only include those that you are genuinely interested in.

Try to fill up options on both lists (Level 8 and 7/6) so that you are likely to get two offers (one from each list).

Make contact with your guidance counsellor in school before the end of term if you need to discuss your options again at this stage.

Always place your course choices in order of preference – not in the order of the points you think you are going to get.

Check the Alert Lists for the various colleges on www.cao.ie to check if any new courses are now available that might interest you. Such courses may not have been included in the CAO booklet at the beginning of the school year.

Check your emails as you will receive confirmation of your new course choices.

If there are any errors of omissions contact the CAO office immediately as it will be too late to do anything about them at a later stage.

CHANGE OF MIND EXCEPTIONAL CLOSING DATE

Subject to some exclusions a student who is currently an undergraduate student in any year of the Higher Education Institutes and who entered that HEI through the CAO system, may submit a Change of Mind in paper form only to arrive in CAO not later than 5.15pm on July 22. This refers generally to students who are looking to change the course they are studying. The Change of Mind form must be stamped by the admissions office of the HEI where you are

QUESTION:

My son is still very unsure about the courses he put down on his form because of all the uncertainty about the exams, what should he do?

Try to put the uncertainty to one side and focus on what your son is genuinely interested in. Get him to consider the subjects he is good at, aptitudes he has, his interests, personality, values and career goals.

While there isn’t certainty around the exams and points, there is a huge variety of courses available to students so by doing proper research and self-assessment he should be able to come up with a list of courses that interest him. Then he needs to take more time to think about how he will rank them from one to 10, starting with his favourite first and continuing in genuine order of preference down along.

To work out the order it may help if your son makes a list of the courses he is interested in on a page and writes down what he likes about each one.

It's not fair to include results from Second Year St Brigid's student Ilona Sheehan, who has been sharing a weekly Junior Cert diary with the Killarney Advertiser, this week gives us her thoughts about why she feels the final grade calculations from previous years is unfair.

It is now clear that many schools are assessing their students differently since the announcement was made by the Department of Education last week that Junior Cert exams are to be cancelled.

My school has decided for 80 percent of our final grade to be calculated from our previous Second Year Christmas results, Second Year summer results, Third Year Christmas results and our

Mock Exam results, each worth 20 percent, for most of our subjects. The final 20 percent will be made up of assignments to be given to us in the coming weeks.

In my opinion, it's not totally fair to include results from Second Year as some people didn't knuckle down until Third Year, and I myself found I improved immensely in Science in Third Year.

Therefore, an average of the last two years wouldn't be as good as I feel I would've done in the real thing.

Obviously, the preferred option would have been none of this happening and Third Year going ahead as normal, but this is out of our control. I feel our solution is better than predicted grades and

full e-tests as it gives us a good chance to redeem ourselves without having access to notes while completing 100 percent of our grade.

Therefore, I expect over the next few weeks most of my 'school' time will be taken up completing these assessments.

Most of these assignments will be exam style questions similar to what we would have been expected to do this coming June. However, a percentage of our final assessment in Irish, five percent for Higher Level, will be based on our engagement with our online learning and assignments over the past few weeks. Looks like we're in for a busy few month!

GORSE FLOWER CORDIAL Gorse flowers are in abundance at the moment and the golden coloured flowers have a scent that is likened to coconut. They are used in teas, wines and vodka infusions, but a cordial is a more

family friendly way of using them and goes well in sparkling water.

Just remember to use gloves to protect your hands when picking them.

INGREDIENTS • 4 large handfuls of gorse flowers • 600ml water • 300mls sugar • 1 orange juice and zest • 1 lemon juice and zest

METHOD

Bring the water and sugar to the boil and simmer until the sugar is dissolved. Add the lemon and orange. Pour over the gorse flowers and leave overnight until cold.

The next day strain the liquid through a sieve lined with a clean cloth or j-cloth and pour the golden coloured liquid into bottles. Keep in the fridge until ready to serve.

Clifford ‘hopeful’ that matches will be played Kerry captain open to playing this year’s championship behind closed doors Kerry captain David Clifford has confirmed that he would be happy to play this year’s All-Ireland Senior Football Championship behind closed doors if necessary.

Speaking to this journalist in an exclusive interview for Killarney-based insurance broker GMHD.ie, Clifford said he is “hopeful” that the 2020 championship will be completed before the end of the year, citing the Taoiseach’s recent comments on restarting GAA activity as “positive”.

Leo Varadkar suggested last Friday that the championships could be staged behind closed doors although the GAA appeared to pour cold water on that idea on Wednesday as they also confirmed that intercounty action would not be resuming until October at the earliest.

HOPEFUL: Kerry captain David Clifford would like to see the championship being played, even if games are behind closed doors.

Speaking before the latest announcement from Croke Park, Clifford admitted that playing without fans wouldn’t be ideal but, he feels as though it would be better than nothing at all.

“I think the news that came out on Friday from Leo Varadkar was definitely positive and gave us a focal point and something to look forward to,” the Fossa youngster said.

“It was probably looking very unlikely for the last few weeks but I think the talk about behind closed doors and different things like that… Of course it matters, but even just having the chance to play anything, behind closed doors or not, would be massive. But I’m hopeful enough that there’ll be a championship in some form.

Some prominent GAA figures have

questioned the value of playing behind closed doors but, like his manager Peter Keane, the 2018 Young Player of the Year believes that it would be better than the alternative.

“Of course [playing in empty stadiums] would be strange. It’s obviously what drives you on and you feed off the crowd and get a massive lift off the crowd at times. But I suppose, look, it’s something I’ve been thinking about, and a lot of fellas are of the belief that, if you had a choice of playing behind closed doors or not playing at all, I think everyone would choose to play behind closed doors.”

“Obviously, it’s not the ideal scenario but if that was the last resort, I think fellas would have no problem with it.”

The government’s Roadmap to Reopening Society and Business states that small group training sessions may resume – subject to social distancing – on June 8, with competitions provisionally slated for a July 20 start date.

On Wednesday the GAA asked counties to suspend all intercounty training until further notice, with club activity to be prioritised when the gates are reopened.

It is still possible that truncated versions of the 2020 intercounty hurling and football championships will be staged behind closed doors - with a return to the old straight knockout format apparently on the cards – but the GAA admits that “there appears to be a lack of appetite for this type of fixture-scheduling at the current time across the wider Association”.

Clifford also discussed the lockdown, his captaincy, his career to date and his Kerry teammates in the wide-ranging interview, which was picked up by a number of national newspapers and also featured on Virgin Media News on Tuesday evening. ‘Ask David Clifford Anything with GMHD.ie’ can be viewed on YouTube.

In Part 4 of our series on the Golden Years, Adam Moynihan takes a look at the 1981 All-Ireland final which saw Kerry secure their second ever four-ina-row.

By the time the 1981 championship came around, Kerry were in cruise control. With three consecutive All-Irelands in the back pocket and no contenders making a whole pile of noise elsewhere, their period of dominance looked certain to continue.

“Every time we went to play a game, we were nearly guaranteed to win,” O’Dwyer is quoted as saying in a biography penned by Owen McCrohan.

“We never thought about defeat. We never looked at the other teams we met along the line. We had 20 players who were good enough to win All-Irelands by playing a style of football that nobody could match.

“At one stage, I never even thought about it. It was just another All-Ireland coming and I wasn’t counting.”

The Kingdom’s path to Croke Park was about as comfortable as you could get. A 4-17 to 0-6 victory over Clare in the Munster semi-final didn’t bode well for future opponents and Cork were subsequently put to the sword in remarkably emphatic fashion. Kerry prevailed on a 1-11 to 0-3 scoreline, prompting Seán Kilfeather of The Irish Times to remark: “There have been more cheerful funerals than this. And not just that; but the wake did not even produce a single moment of hilarity. No song stood out; no piper played a lament.

Nobody could care less, least of all the 41,292 people who saw the most pathetic Munster football final ever at Fitzgerald Stadium. Cork could only score one single point from play in the 70 minutes. The young man who scored – Dave Barry – is said to have

Kerry never appeared to be in too much danger in this particular final but it took a late goal by talismanic midfielder Jack O’Shea to really copperfasten the victory. A sweeping move which started with captain Jimmy Deenihan in his own full back line and involved Tim Kennelly, Tommy Doyle, John Egan and Eoin Liston eventually made its way to Mikey Sheehy around 30 metres out from goal. Sheehy popped a neat handpass into O’Shea and the Mary’s man fired a beautiful strike to the top corner to give Kerry an unassailable eight-point lead.

The All-Ireland semi-final was even more one-sided as Micko’s men hammered Mayo by 2-19 to 1-6. The handpass (as opposed to the closed fist pass) had now been banned by the GAA but Kerry appeared to be unperturbed and they were now just 70 minutes away from a record-equalling four-in-a-row.

Disaster struck for the champions one week before the final against Offaly when one of their star players, Pat Spillane, aggravated a recurring knee injury in a trial game in Killarney. The Templenoe man received treatment from a specialist in Dublin and was given the all clear but, unfortunately, the knee swelled up again the morning of the game. After trying it out on the hotel lawn, it was clear that it wasn’t right.

Tommy Doyle, for the second consecutive year, came in as a last-minute replacement for a key forward.

Offaly also suffered a late injury blow when Johnny Mooney hurt himself in a tractor accident at work.

Both players were a loss but, as it turned out, Kerry’s strength in depth was a crucial factor once again.

After a tetchy opening half, the sides were level at five points apiece and The Kingdom’s plans were thrown into disarray when Mikey Sheehy asked to be taken off at the break. Sheehy had been receiving painkilling injections for a foot injury but the effects of his pre-match dose had worn off. Micko pleaded with his top-scorer to return to the field with his teammates and, after taking another injection from Dr Con Murphy, Sheehy made it out for the second half.

Kerry had a narrow escape in the opening moments of the second period when Gerry Carroll’s shot ricocheted to safety via Charlie Nelligan’s crossbar.

Four straight points by Seán Walsh, John Egan, Sheehy (a free) and Ogie Moran gave them a 9-5 lead before Seán Lowry pulled one back in the 59th minute.

Now it was a one-score game and with capable forwards like Matt Connor floating around, anything was possible.

Thankfully for holders, points by Sheehy (two) and Tommy Doyle steadied the ship and when marauding midfielder Jack O’Shea scored a spectacular goal with just three minutes to play, Kerry were home and dry.

Pat Spillane was summoned from the bench to join the action – to rapturous applause from the travelling Kerry support – and O’Dwyer’s soldiers sauntered home to a well-deserved seven-point win. The match itself wasn’t much of a spectacle but Micko didn’t give a damn.

“It is better to win a bad one than lose a good one,” he told the media in the winning dressing room.

Following in the footsteps of Wexford (1915, 1916, 1917 and 1918) and Kerry (1929, 1930, 1931 and 1932), this great panel of players had become just the third team ever to win the coveted four-in-a-row. They were now, without question, a major part of Kerry GAA history.

“I’ve been around over 80 years now and I’ve seen a lot of players in my time,” O’Dwyer later reflected in the RTÉ documentary ‘Micko’, “but the 15 of those men that were on the field together – I don’t believe you could get better at any period at any time.

“It isn’t because I was managing them or anything. It’s because they were the best.”

SPORT NOTES

Spa GAA ACTIVITY: While the country is still under restriction of movement and activity, the club grounds and facilities will remain closed completely until further notice from GAA headquarters. There is hope of some GAA returning during the summer, but for now, players, members and the general public are not allowed use of Club Grounds or Facilities for any activity including training or recreational while the current restrictions are in place.

RESTRICTIONS: Taoiseach Leo Varadkar gave a State of the Nation address on Friday and a full breakdown on details is available online through gov.ie.

VOLUNTEERS AVAILABLE: Spa GAA are part of the Community Volunteer programme and as well as the Kerry Volunteers helpline, we have a list of club members in different areas that have offered to be available if called upon during these few weeks. Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club COURSE REOPENING: The Committee acknowledges last Friday’s announcement by the Government in relation to the re-opening of the country during the current public health situation. We are awaiting confirmation of where Pitch & Putt falls in relation to the staged plan announced and we will announce our re-opening once such clarification is provided.

Dr Crokes GAA ACTIVITIES: We are still at a standstill with all club activities. With the GAA announcement that there would be no mass gatherings beyond 5,000 people until at least August 31 it gives a glimmer of hope that there may be a resumption of club activities during the summer months. We look forward to announcements on May 5 and hopefully they will be positive. In the meantime stay safe and follow the guidelines ONLINE COACHING is one of the initiatives that has been introduced in the last few days and is being warmly welcomed. Following on from Eoin Brosnan, Daithi Casey, Pat & Gavin O`Shea, Amanda Brosnan, Fionn Fitzgerald and Kate Stack we thank Tony Brosnan, Johnny Buckley, John & Michael Lenihan Rheanne O`Shea , Oisin O`Connor, Daniel Healy and Kevin Landers for participating. In the coming weeks more nuggets will appear.

Muckross Rowing Club COVID-19: All club activity remains suspended until further notice following the extension of the public health restrictions. We continue to communicate with members regarding personal training at home and outdoor exercise, observing strict social distancing and now within 5km of home. Please continue to follow the latest government and HSE advice.

VIRTUAL REGATTA: Over the Bank Holiday weekend, Rowing Ireland organised a Virtual Regatta where rowers were challenged to complete as many kilometres individually using indoor rowing machine, bicycle or running and observing the 2km limit for outdoor exercise. A large number of members from Junior 14 right up to Masters took part and logged their kilometres online, well done to all!

ROWING IRELAND UPDATES: Rowing Ireland’s Working Group on COVID-19 is in the process of reviewing the roadmap for easing of public health restrictions, which will inform a potential path for a return to rowing. Contingency planning continues for a form of regatta season and a rescheduled and curtailed Irish Championships Regatta on 12-13 September. At this time, all fixtures remain subject to review based on the latest public health advice.

SYMPATHY: Sympathy is extended to the family and extended family of Susie Breen who passed away last week. Susie was a great supporter of Beaufort GAA Club and travelled to every game at most levels wherever Beaufort were playing.
