Anger as Port Road development heads for An Bord Pleanála

Kerry County Council has recommended that planning permission be granted for a controversial development on Port Road despite widespread objections from elected councillors. | By Sean Moriarty Portal Asset Holdings Ltd has lodged planning permission with Kerry County Council for the construction of a development of 76 houses, 56 duplexes and 96 apartments on a greenfield site to the rear of the District Hospital on St Margaret’s Road and to the rear of the traditional cottages on Port Road.

It is proposed to build an access road off the Port Road too.

The proposed development includes upgrade works to Port Road, a pedestrian connection to Millwood Estate, and improvements to the stormwater network on St Margaret’s Road as part of enabling infrastructure for the project.

Last month the application caused anger amongst residents of the area who fear their quality of life will be affected by the development.

The application is set to go before An Bord Pleanála.

On Wednesday, Kerry County Council’s senior planner Damien Ginty gave a presentation on various issues and concerns connected with the application at a Killarney Municipal District meeting.

ifies housing demand in Killarney and the surrounding area,” stated the report. “It is recommended that permission be granted for the proposed development.”

Mr Ginty’s conclusion was met with anger from all seven elected councillors. They were unanimous in their calls that such a large development should not go ahead in the area.

And while they all admitted that Killarney urgently needs more houses they felt that there were too many local issues to allow this particular development go ahead in its current format.

One of the proposals is to include a pedestrian access point from the existing Millwood estate into the new development which will include a crèche.

Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan said Millwood would become a “a drop off point” for parents.

“I am not in favour to the connectivity to Millwood,” he told the meeting, “This is something that this estate does not deserve. I am disappointed by a lot of things in the report – they don’t wash with me.

My view is I am not in favour of what is being proposed.”

Cllr Brendan Cronin raised concerns about the potential increase in traffic in an already congested area.

“I have very serious concerns regarding the size and scale of this development on a number of fronts,” he told the meeting.

“The scale and size [of the development] with only one access will create traffic chaos in an already busy road. This planning should be downsized to an appropriate level.”

Cllr Maura Healy-Rae was also concerned about traffic issues in the area if the development goes ahead.

“We are well aware of the traffic congestion in that area,” she said. “That road is often gridlocked.”

She also raised concerns about the size of the development. “I am not against housing development,” she added. “But there are issues there in terms of scale, height, number of houses and the impact on traffic.”

Cllr John O’Donoghue echoed his colleagues' concerns regarding traffic in the area “that is already blocked up three or

Lewis Road left-turn only by end of summer | By Sean Moriarty The much awaited left-turn only from the Lewis Road junction and N22 Bypass Road will be completed by the end of the summer.

That is according to a Kerry County Council official who was responding to a

query from Cllr Brendan Cronin.

Cronin asked for an update on the project at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting: “following repeated requests over many years”.

The Council official replied: “Tender documents are currently being prepared to procure a contractor to carry out these

works as the first of a number of safety improvement phases on the N22 at the Lewis Road and Kilcummin Road junctions. The works to modify Lewis Road junction to left-out only will be carried out in Q3 2022.”

He has raised concerns about stormwater drains coming from the site that “will have a colossal impact on the lakes”.

Cllr Donal Grady said the proposal was “a concrete jungle”.

“We badly need houses but what is happening here is ridiculous,” he said.

Cllr Niall Kelleher took a similar stance.

“We need houses but we need it done properly,” he told the meeting.

Mayor Marie Moloney concluded the discussion.

“I am not against housing but I am against the scale of this development. It is too big and too imposing,” she said.

A separate issue arose concerning lands belonging to the Kerry Education Training Board (KETB) which sit adjacent to the proposed development.

It is proposed that two pedestrian/cycle routes will connect the development with ETB’s lands.

Both Mayor Moloney and Cllr O’Callaghan sit on the ETB board and both said that the ETB has not given consent for such a move. the Bypass Road. Instead motorists will have to turn left and make a U-turn at the Cleeney Roundabout.

The same applies to traffic exiting the Kilcummin Road where motorists will have to make their way to the Michael D O’Shea Roundabout at the sports centre before U-turning.

A yet to be specified lane divider will prevent illegal U-turns between each junction.

Killarney to light up for Nathan’s Walk Organisers of 'Darkness into Light - Nathan's Walk' are expecting Killarney to “light up” as the popular charity walk makes a welcome return after the pandemic forced the cancellation of the event for the last two years. | By Sean Moriarty The idea behind the local event is to spread awareness and to help prevent suicide and self-harm. It's also a chance to raise vital funds for the service provided free by Pieta House.

The Killarney walk was set up in 2011 by Marie O'Carroll following the tragic loss of her 14-year-old son Nathan.

'Darkness into Light - Nathan's Walk' was launched at JM Reidy’s on Tuesday and a large crowd took advantage of the early registration which opened at the launch.

Marie is confident that this year’s walk will attract large numbers going by the amount who signed up on Tuesday.

“People just want to get out after the pandemic,” she told the Killarney Adver-

tiser.

“Killarney is going to light up.”

This year’s event will start at 4.15am Saturday morning from Killarney Racecourse. The 5k route will pass Ross Castle before entering the National Park and following the lake shore it will return to the racecourse via Ross Road.

Registration will re-open this evening (Friday) from 7pm to 9pm at Killarney Racecourse. Volunteers will also be on hand to finish registration between 1.30am and the walk’s start.

Meanwhile, Gary McCormick is recruiting volunteers to help marshal the walk. He needs people from 12 midnight to manage car parking in the racecourse as well as other roles along the route. He can be contacted on 087 685 6929.

The Dublin scheme is based on the London project which was launched by then London Mayor Boris Johnson 12 years ago with modes of transport known as ‘Boris Bikes’ to this day.

London’s first large-scale public bike hire scheme was greeted with a largely positive response from the public in July 2010.

The scheme, which followed similar projects in other countries including France and Spain, aimed to ease congestion on London’s commuter network through 400 bicycle “docking stations” placed all over the city.

The same plan could come to Killarney after Cllr John O’Donoghue called for such a move at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.

He asked: “That the Council would liaise with existing bicycle rental operators within the town to see the feasibility of starting a rental bike scheme in Killarney similar to the City Bike Scheme in Dublin”.

A council official said: “Provision of additional infrastructure in the town is subject to market demand. However, it is important to be cognisant of the potential for any displacement of existing enterprises providing these services."

Town centre community CCTV still a long way off | By Sean Moriarty Calls to fast-track the introduction of community CCTV in Killarney town centre have fallen on deaf ears.

Cllr Niall Kelleher has been calling for the introduction of the scheme for nearly two years.

He pushed senior Kerry County Council officials for an update on the project at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.

“I cannot stress how urgent it is to have this operational,” he told the meeting.

Council officials are engaging with various statutory bodies like the Data Protection Commission (DPC) and An Garda Síochána.

A Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) statement is being prepared and as a result getting approval for the project

is not likely for some time yet.

“Once the DPIA is completed it will be necessary to consult with the Data Protection Commission in relation to the proposals for CCTV as set out in the DPIA and in relation to the range of measures to ensure that the rights and freedoms of individuals are safeguarded in accordance with the legislative requirements taking account of guidance from the DPC and recent actions by the DPC in this area,” explained a Council official.

“Following this consultation with the DPC it will be necessary to update the Garda Commissioner’s authorisation for the project prior to the commencement of the infrastructural works associated with the project and a formal application to the Garda Commissioner will be required in respect of same. It is anticipated that significant progress will be made with this project over the course of 2022.”

TOWN TALK Have a cup of tea for MND Fresh from their set dancer's being crowned All-Ireland champions in the Gleneagle INEC on Sunday it's now the turn of Spa's GAA Healthy Clubs Officer, Margaret Doyle. | By Michelle Crean 'Drink Tea For MND' was launched in the John Kelly room at Spa GAA Club on Monday alongside Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone branch chairman Christy Lehane.

This event will be held in Spa on the morning of Saturday May 14 from 10am to 12 noon and will include a raffle also. It is also hoped to set up a link where people can donate online if you are unable to attend on the day.

Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone was set up in Lissivigeen in 2011. Motor Neurone is an extremely debilitating disease with a life expectancy of three to five years and depends totally on fundraisers to support the care and meet the needs of

people suffering with this disease. It has claimed the lives of many local people in our area and has also been highlighted at national level more recently by former RTE journalist and reporter Charlie Bird who is currently battling with this incurable disease.

Margaret felt it was time that Spa GAA Club and the wider community supported Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone as that's what inclusion is about.

"It was hoped to hold this event in 2020 but due to the COVID pandemic it was put on hold," Margaret said.

"So on May 14 'Drink Tea For MND' and if tea is not your thing sip a coffee. Home baking is also welcome on the day."

New initiative launched to promote hurling in Killarney 'Friends of Killarney Hurling' is a new initiative recently set up to promote hurling in the greater Killarney area.

The objective of this is to identify and support various initiatives such as school coaching, open days with guest coaches, fun day activities and many other events to promote hurling.

“The aim is to support Colm O'Brien in his role as GDA [Games Development Administrator] and offer some assistance in promoting the small ball in this area,”

chairperson, Michael Milner, said.

“Some local Gardaí have also offered their support with this initiative and will assist with juvenile coaching in some schools.”

O’Sullivan Cycles have sponsored a bike to the value of €1,000 as first prize in a new fundraising draw which takes place on June 5. Other prizes include €250 and €100 cash.

Live sounds of wildlife to be streamed online

The beautiful sounds of nature's finest song birds will be broadcast for all to hear tomorrow morning (Saturday) beginning at 5am.

The National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) team based in Killarney National Park will livestream the 'Dawn Chorus' through the Park’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/killarneynationalpark from 5 - 6am.

Against the beautiful backdrop of Muckross Abbey in Killarney National Park, listeners will be treated to a live performance alongside expert commentary from the National Park and Wildlife Services (NPWS) Conservation Rangers.

Listeners can expect to hear birdsong from Killarney National Park’s birdlife, including robins, blackbirds, song thrushes, wood pigeons, wrens, warblers, sparrows, and finches. The livestream will coincide with the annual ‘Darkness into Light’ event and provide an ideal companion to those participating in the walk as well as listeners based at home who are interested in engaging with nature and the heritage of Killarney National Park.

NPWS staff led by Danny O’Keeffe, will guide and identify the various birdsong.

The event also brings together the his-

tory and heritage of Killarney National Park and its surrounds. Conservation Rangers will speak about the beautifully preserved cloisters and the iconic 500-year-old yew tree. Buried in the Abbey are the internationally renowned Four Kerry Poets from the 17th and 18th centuries, Seafraidh Ó Donnchadha, Aodhagán Ó Rathaille, and Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin and Piaras Feiritéar.

A number of local experts and musicians will also participate in the event, including Sean Forde who will speak about the mythology surrounding the Abbey, Padruig ‘Brac’ O’Sullivan, who will speak about his 40 years’ service as a Park Ranger and music related to summer and the nearby Sliabh Luachra will be played by local musicians Niamh Ní Charra, Bryan O’Leary and Sharon Lyons.

The NPWS team is thankful for the support of INEC Killarney whose expert technicians, Kieran Somers and Denis Lovett will be supplying the audio and live-streaming services.

Killarney Gardai were “very happy” with the Rally of the Lakes despite thousands of people in the town for the weekend.

The rally made a welcome return after the pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 events.

Previous rallies were marred by anti-social behaviour issues and so-called boy racers causing traffic disruptions.

A major traffic plan was launched in the run up to the rally with Garda check points on several approach roads to the town.

A separate plan policed night time activities in the town centre.

Despite the large crowds, local Gardai reported a quieter than usual rally weekend.

“We are very happy with the way the weekend went,” Superintendent Flor

Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser.

“There was nothing serious in terms of a negative headline that would reflect badly on the reputation of the town or that would cause concern for the general public.”

Mayor Marie Moloney was also full of praise for the event.

“The ceremonial start took place in Main Street on the Friday evening. This was attended by huge crowds and on the following two days thousands of people lined the viewing points along all the stages,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.

“This was a very successful rally which gave huge exposure of Killarney both nationally and internationally. I want to congratulate the organising committee who put in trojan work to ensure the success of the rally and the safety of spectators. I would also like to extend my congratulations to the winners in all of the categories.”

Building works granted for schools State-of-the-art additional accommodation projects have been approved for two schools.

Education Minister Norma Foley announced the approval of funding for Cullina National School in Beaufort and Castledrum National School, Castlemaine during recent visits.

Cullina National School has been approved for a mainstream classroom, a new toilet block and reconfiguration

works for a modern sensory room while the project for Castledrum National School will see a new, en-suite mainstream classroom and a base classroom for children with special educational needs installed.

Both projects have been approved under the Department of Education’s Additional Accommodation Scheme. These projects are now devolved to the School Authority to appoint a Consultant for each project.

EXTENSION: Education Minister Norma Foley announced the approval of funding for Cullina National School in Beaufort during a recent visit.

“I was delighted to visit both schools to confirm the approval of building projects at Cullina NS and Castledrum NS," Minister Foley said.

"These are two very important projects to meet the needs of the students while

also investing in the provision of special education in their respective communities. I look forward to seeing the progress of these projects and the richly deserved benefits they will bring to both school communities."

Marie Meets

Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.

Determination and dedication helps Leah secure another boxing title Boxing was the word on the tip of everyone’s tongues over the weekend, particularly women’s boxing and the undisputed world lightweight championship Katie Taylor’s fight with Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden in New York.

It was another fantastic achievement in her monumental career. 10 rounds of courage, determination, skill and stamina, not to mention the massive role model she is to young Irish boxers oozing positivity and gratitude throughout. I had also been carefully watching online updates of Mike and Teresa’s Leah who has always been a ‘knockout’ behind my lens since the first day I met her. I was delighted to see their family portrait hanging when I arrived.

Killarney Community College student Leah Sheehan, a member of Johnny and Jennifer Coffey’s Sliabh Luachra Boxing Club, enjoyed a similar boxing victory taking home gold as the newly crowned ‘All-Ireland Girl3 66kg Champion’ at the National Stadium in Dublin last Friday having defeated Leah Moore, Ballybough, Dublin. The boxing club brought home three gold medals in 2021, and Leah increased this to four in 2022. Gold medalists from Sliabh Luachra Boxing Club were also Mary McDonagh, Michelle McDonagh, Jamesie Casey and a silver medal went to Sean O’Riordan.

“If you want something bad you have to work hard for it,” Leah said. “I train six days a week and followed a strictly balanced protein diet to build and maintain as I trained. Katie Taylor has done so much for women’s boxing. She is a huge role model and boxing wouldn’t be where it is today without her. She is a massive role model. She inspires me.”

Leah and I chatted a little about Katie and recalled how Katie once fought disguised as a boy just so she could compete. Mum

Teresa arrived with a cupán tae.

“I couldn’t have done it without the help of my mother,” Leah continued. “Everyday she prepared different variations of turkey, chicken, rice and veg, together with two litres of water per day to help me with the cleanest diet to improve my performance.”

Teresa smiled.

“Marie, it was the hardest thing to enjoy an Easter Egg or any treat for that matter in the build up to Leah’s fight but she was determined and didn’t complain once,” Teresa replied. “Training first Marie. It’s what I want so it’s what I had to do to achieve my goals,” Leah explained.

DEDICATION

At 14 only just, I admired Leah’s determination and dedication and I could see from the way she spoke that she was truly passionate about boxing.

“Leah, what was the food you most craved while you trained?” I had to ask.

“Pizza! I couldn’t wait for a slice of pizza so we went out and ordered one to take away. Having craved it for so long, you can imagine my face when it was acciden-

“At my level of boxing my fight was just three rounds, each round for one and a half minutes and it went for three full rounds. My weight is 66kg but I want to move down to 63kg to gain more experience of competitions. I know my fantastic coaches Johnny Coffey, Jake Kelly and Mikey Broderick will help me with that when I return next week and it’s onwards from there hopefully. I really want to succeed. I was also lucky enough to do some strength and conditioning with pro boxer Kevin Cronin in the month leading up to my fight. I really enjoyed that also.

Mike, Leah’s stepdad, told me about the next steps for Leah. I was distracted a little as she beamed and hung on every word Mike said about her future in boxing. Leah wanted this so bad, this was very clear.

“Next up in June is the National Cadets Competition. Teresa added, “Marie, no one should be thanked more than Mike for the guidance and support he has given Leah on this journey.”

Leah continued “He’s travelled the length and breath of the country for me and it’s definitely brought us closer than we ever were before.”

“Leah, how do you feel when you realised that you’d won? What did you do?”

I asked. “The first thing I did was phone my Grandad Liam O’Connell. I loved his words Marie. He said “Leah you are my hero. I am very proud of you and I love you so much”,” Leah replied.

Great turnout to support Kay's memorial walk

There was a good turnout to an annual fundraising walk to remember a much loved local lady. | By Michelle Crean Family, friends and colleagues of Kay McCarthy from Tullig, Spa, came together on Sunday April 24 for the '3k for Kay' in aid of the Irish Cancer Society (ICS).

Walkers met at Navé coffee did a loop around Ross Castle and back.

Last year's '3k for Kay' was done virtually due to COVID and Kay's family and friends were overwhelmed to raise to €13,000 for the Irish Cancer Society.

Participants were asked to wear blue, which was Kay's favourite colour.

Kay, who worked in the accounts office in Daly's SuperValu for 25 years and in Pretty Polly before that, was a much loved local woman. She was diagnosed

Local Gardai are investigating two serious road traffic accidents that occurred in the Kilcummin area over the last week.

Four people were hospitalised and one remains in a critical condition in Cork University Hospital as a result of the two crashes.

Alana O'Brien (14), daughter of Daniel and Michelle O'Brien from Hazelwood Drive in Ballyspillane, took up boxing just three years ago, after seeing Taylor fight in Tralee.

On Saturday night she was crowned the champion in her category in the National Stadium in Dublin after a brilliant Leinster final win a few weeks ago.

"Alana progressed with a great win and unfortunately her opponent for the All-Ireland never made it for some reason so Alana was crowned All-Ireland champion at 47kg Girl 3 for a second year running," her dad Daniel told the Killarney Advertiser.

"She now goes forward to Cadets in June to fight for a chance of a third Irish title and also represent Ireland in the European championship in Turkey in August.

Ukrainian children learn the ropes!

More than 15 Ukrainian children from the Innisfallen Hotel have joined the local Killarney Scout Group. | By Natalya Krasnenkova Every Wednesday, Ukrainian children walk to the nearest school in Fossa to spend time with Scouts. The children say that they really like to put up tents, make wooden furniture from boards, and learn to knit knots from ropes.

Very soon the children will go to camp with local Scouts. The Killarney Advertiser asked Sean Sweeney, the Killarney Scout Group leader, about working with Ukrainian children.

Why did the scouts from Fossa invite Ukrainian children to join the movement?

The Fossa group were beginning to make plans to have the Ukrainian children join when Killarney Scout Group

said they had arranged an evening's activities at the hotel. We discussed it among the leaders in both groups and felt it would be easier for them to access scouting in Fossa as they could walk to and from meetings. So after a nice evening's activities we registered the Ukrainian children interested in scouting with the group. The ethos of the group is inclusion and an opportunity for all children to enjoy the activities scouting has to offer regardless of background. We also felt that as part of our Scout law a Scout is helpful and considerate of others and that it was important that we be as helpful as possible to the Ukrainian families who have come to live in our parish.

What are your first impressions of communicating with children from Ukraine?

No matter where in the world they come from children are children and are always quick to learn and are able to adapt to situations. While there is a language barrier there to be overcome it should not prevent a young person getting involved and having fun. The Ukrainian children were quick to get involved and like our own Scouts they are enthusiastic and appear to be enjoying what they are learning so far.

How do you overcome language barriers?

When we need to teach some technical items like pitching tents or building tables we find the scouting resources online and using an online translator we create a Ukrainian version of the resources. For other things we use hand signals and it is amazing how much a frown or smile can communicate. Some of the young people have enough English to be of help to us also in overcoming the language barrier.

When working with young people, a little patience and some good humour go a long way.

What are the plans for spring and summer for Scouts and how Ukrainian children will be integrated into them?

In May we will have our county Scout camp locally. This is where Scouts from all over Kerry meet over a weekend to camp, learn skills and have fun together. We hope the Ukrainian children will participate as it is always a highlight of our scouting year. As the evenings get longer we will spend more time outdoors learning scouting skills and will

have some day hikes and hope to have a group camp of our own in late June or early July.

Tell us about your movement: ideology, history of Fossa, how many local children join the Scout movement?

Fossa 8th Kerry was established in September 1982 with just a Scout section for boys aged 11-15. Two years later a Cub Scout section was founded and a year later a Venture Scout section was added. Finally in 2018 Beaver Scouts were started in the group. Since the pandemic we have reopened our Scout and Venture Scout sections but are currently looking for volunteers to help us reopen the younger sections in September. Over its history we have had many generous people give of their time as leaders in the group to ensure that we kept going and kept providing the fun of scouting to about 3,000 young people and counting. Fossa 8th Kerry is part of the national association called Scouting Ireland. Scouting Ireland's goal is to encourage the social, physical, intellectual, character, emotional and spiritual development of young people so that they may achieve their full potential and, as responsible citizens, to improve society. As part of Scouting Ireland we have taken part in Provincial, National and International camps and have enjoyed the company of many international Scouts over the years.

Ukrainians take up local sporting activities

During the first month of living in Killarney, Ukrainians resumed sports.

Recently, Ukrainian newcomers to the Kerry Athletics Club won the cup competition in athletics at the Country Championships.

13-year-old Ivan Tkachenko from Kyiv and 11-year-old Vova Kravchenko from Kharkiv arrived in Killarney in late March. They joined the Kerry Athletics Club and began training.

In Ukraine, the boys are involved in athletics, each in his own place. Ivan has repeatedly won Ukrainian competitions in short-distance running and jumping. Before the war, Ivan trained four times a week. He has a father left in Kyiv, Serhiy Tkachenko, a professional athlete who now helps as a volunteer and delivers food to needy people.

“It was very important for us to continue training. By chance we met the coach in Killarney and joined the athletics club. Twice a week our children go to training. Sports allow our children to integrate into the local community and make friends with local children, as well as feel at peace again,” Olga Tkachenko, Ivan's mother, said.

Some Ukrainian children from the Innisfallen Hotel have joined soccer and Gaelic football clubs, and some are dancing.

Every morning in the National Park you can see Svetlana, she goes for a run.

This is her traditional ritual. From time to time other Ukrainians run through the Park, they greet the locals and al-

ready know each other.

Yaroslava Shkurko together with other Ukrainian women have already joined the Killarney Walking Group.

“We made friends with wonderful women from the group: Helen Murphy, Val Doughty, Roser Bosch and other friendly people. Pleasant communication, enjoyment of nature, walks in the Park we really like. We will be happy to continue our walks.”

In the evening around the Innisfallen you can see another group of Ukrainians training outdoors. Functional and cardio training with elements of boxing is conducted for them by professional trainer Ruslan Surmanidze.

Ruslan is a Ukrainian who arrived a month ago and lives in the Innisfallen Hotel. He gathered people and developed a training programme for them, which he conducted using skipping ropes, stretch mats and dumbbells.

The coach wants to help Ukrainians get in shape after hard tests. Ruslan is also ready to teach children about Killarney boxing.

"My first purchase in Killarney was sneakers," Natalia Krasnenkova said.

"It was running that helped me overcome the stress I brought with me from Ukraine. Daily jogging in the park has become a real psychotherapy for me. I think that many Ukrainians can change their health for the better through work with the body.”

Golf classic a success for Kilcummin GAA

Not only was it an important fundraiser for the club but also a lovely social event as Kilcummin GAA held their fundraising Golf Classic on Saturday last.

Held in Kenmare Golf Club, the course itself was in pristine condition and the glorious sunshine provided the perfect weather for a great day of golf.

Their renovated club, which has only been open for a week, is modern yet retains its former charm. 65 teams teed off and in the end the golfers representing Kelly’s Contractors prevailed with a score of 68 pts. D&D Sound and Lighting were second on 61 pts. Glenflesk GAA were third with 60 pts, Mike Riordan’s team were 4th with 59 pts.

GAA Club bar and the family of Anthony O'Sullivan presented the winners with his perpetual trophy.

And the success of the event was down to the incredible hard work of the golf committee.

"We are very grateful to all those who sponsored teams, tee boxes and spot prizes, to all those who played and to the friends and family of Anthony O'Sullivan for their ongoing support of the Golf Classic," Breeda Duggan, President of the Kilcummin GAA Golf Society, said.

Zelensky mural to feature at K-FEST next month The organisers of K-FEST are preparing to unveil a mural in support of Ukraine in the days ahead of this year's festival taking place next month.

The piece, an image of Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine in the patriotic blue and yellow is currently on show at the Central Hotel on Exchequer Street in Dublin and will be transported to Killorglin for the June Bank Holiday weekend to exhibit it in the town.

K-FEST has been lucky enough to link up with Hang Tough Contemporary Gallery in Dublin to showcase Dublin based artist ‘Aches’ incredible mural.

Aches, who is the biggest street artist in Ireland, specialises in large scale murals and graffiti. Born in 1992, he started drawing and painting at a young age and began to paint graffiti when he was 15-years-old. After graduating from NCAD with a degree in Visual Communications, Aches began to fuse his knowledge of graphic design and graffiti.

Aches has been invited to design and cre-

ate original artwork for projects around the world, in countries such as Denmark, Hungary, Spain, Sweden, Scotland, Austria, Switzerland, England and USA. After a decade of painting outdoors, Aches’ artistic practice is now shared in equal balance between contemporary murals and studio work.

K-FEST has been collaborating with established, emerging and local Irish street artists to create murals in the town of Killorglin for many years now, Art Director of the festival, Rochelle Lucey, explained.

"Since 2014 we have had a number of incredible murals done on walls and on lightboxes throughout the town. They leave a real mark and show the impact that K-FEST Arts festival has had on the town over the years. We have worked with artists such as Solus, Dan Leo, Lorraine McDonnell, Kinmx and Pawel Wrobelski. They have each brought something special to the town and transformed the town’s walls into an open-air gallery, continuing to make Killorglin the essential cultural attraction on the Ring of Kerry. The premise of our festival is to

support emerging talent and to bring life into old unused properties in the town which we do every year on the June Bank Holiday weekend. By bringing these amazing murals onto the old walls and spaces in Killorglin we are also uplifting the town throughout the year."

This year they are getting Baz to create a beautiful new piece on Langford Street in Killorglin based on the life of Máirín Cregan who was born in Killorglin in 1891.

"Máirín Cregan was an Irish nationalist who was involved in the 1916 Easter Rising and Irish War of Independence. She later made her name writing for children, as well as writing plays and novels for adults. Recently there has been one of her written plays in Killorglin called ‘Hunger Strike’ put on stage and a plaque was unveiled at the grave of the Cregan family, at Dromavalla Cemetery, Killorglin."

Free interactive drama workshop A free, interactive drama workshop will take place this coming June as an introduction to youth theatre practice.

Orienteering Championships hailed a success

Organisers of the Irish Orienteering Championships which took place last weekend have praised Killarney which hosted the four-day event. | By Sean Moriarty | Photos: Valerie O’Sullivan Over 500 athletes competed in the championships which were organised

by Orienteering Ireland and facilitated by Kerry Orienteering Club.

The event started with a sprint race in Muckross House Estate on Friday. Saturday’s action took place near Cappanalea on the shores of Caragh Lake. Sunday the competitors visited Crohane Lake near Kilgarvan for their classic event. The action concluded on Monday with a relay race on the grounds of Knockreer House.

Registration and prizegiving took place at the ANAM Arts Centre on East Avenue

Kerry Local Creative Youth Partnership (LCYP) at Kerry ETB and the Arts Office at Kerry County Council, in association with Youth Theatre Ireland, are offering the free drama workshop facilitation training to individuals over 18 years of age who have an interest in working with young people within a creative context.

Performing arts graduates, theatre artists, former youth theatre members, youth workers, teachers, amateur drama members, stage school operators or volunteers are all welcome to join the training. A three-hour evening workshop will be led by expert facilitators from Youth Theatre Ireland at 4.30pm on Thursday, June 9. It is free and is for anyone interested in upskilling their facilitation practice.

Youth Theatre Ireland is the national development organisation for youth theatre. Its mission is to support the social, personal, and artistic development of young people through youth theatre.

It supports a network of youth theatres that deliver year-round programmes of drama workshops and performance opportunities to young people.

A unique passion for storytelling and performance exists in Kerry and the county has a long-standing history and tradition in the performing arts. Youth theatres are forming throughout the county with support from Kerry LCYP and the Arts Office under the guidance of Youth Theatre Ireland. Participation in youth theatre is proven to help build confidence and develop communication skills in young people.

For anyone interested in the evening workshop who would like a bit more information, Youth Theatre Ireland will host an online information session at 1pm on Thursday June 2 that is open to all.

“On Sunday, Dr. Una May, Chief Executive Officer of Sport Ireland, addressed the association.

“Since this event, the organisers have contacted Killarney Municipal District to express their delight with how this event went and to compliment the functionality of the ANAM Centre.”

Junior Brother to perform in Tralee This coming Sunday (May 8), singer-songwriter Junior Brother will perform his debut show, supported by the Local Live Performance Scheme 3, in St John’s the Evangelist Church Tralee.

The scheme, through Kerry County Council, is designed to help support performances by local Kerry musicians, artists, and performers. All events will take place in front of a live audience.

Junior Brother's stories unfold with reckless abandon upon an idiosyncratic guitar and foot tambourine accompaniment. His acclaimed debut album 'Pull the Right Rope' was a Choice Music Prize nominee for Irish Album of the Year. He is influenced as much by the avant-garde as music from the middle ages and his home place in rural Ireland. The performance is part of a summer programme of events organised by Non/faction and supported by the Local Live Performance Scheme 3.

Non/faction is a nonprofit collective based in Kerry that seeks to unlock new opportunities to experience, engage and promote contemporary culture. Welsh guitarist (and astrophysicist) Gwenifer

The scheme has provided support to new and exciting performances while also helping other successful initiatives return to the county.

Festival in a Van is a mini-mobile venue that delivers safe and, best of all, fun experiences. It was an idea that developed out of a need. When restrictions were in place due to COVID-19, Festival in a Van travelled around Ireland to deliver small outdoor performances to local communities. It will return to Kerry this summer.

Joe Thoma and his band will be performing as part of Festival in a Van at 4pm on Friday May 13 in Parnell Place, Kenmare.

Pat O’Callaghan retires after 43 years' service Kerry National Ambulance Service has congratulated a long term employee on his retirement after 43 years of excellent service to the people of Kerry.

Pat O’Callaghan retired as Operations Manager for Kerry National Ambulance Service. He joined the ambulance service on March 12, 1979 and worked in multiple Ambulance Stations throughout the county.

Mr O’Callaghan was promoted to the position of Ambulance Controller on April 27 1984, when St Catherine’s Hospital closed, and Tralee General Hospital (now known as University Hospital Kerry) opened. He had the privilege to transfer the last patient from St Catherine’s Hospital and close the door for the

last time.

In 2010, Mr O’Callaghan was promoted to the office of Manager of the Ambulance Service for Kerry. The service has changed and evolved over the years since he first joined in 1979, from what was basically a transport service with just one person for ambulance service, to current highly trained Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), Paramedics and Advance Paramedics.

“I enjoyed every minute of my 43 years of service and while it was a challenging role it was most rewarding with a great sense of satisfaction. The service provided the best possible care that a patient requires in the pre-hospital setting, supported by the most up to date equipment, telecommunication and ambulance fleet," Pat said.

Baking charity needs local volunteers

Consider It Cakes is a national organisation that provides free cakes to those in emergency accommodation and direct provision centres and they've been busier than even following the arrival of hundreds of Ukrainians into the town.

It was launched in Killarney just before the pandemic set it in. Local volunteers have provided, on average, one cake a

A local charity that provides free birthday cakes to people in direct provision is looking for volunteer bakers to help it cope with unprecedented demand.

“Since the Ukrainian refugees arrived we are baking up to five cakes a week,” local volunteer Mary O’Carroll told the Killarney Advertiser. “We need more people to help. They don’t have to be professional bakers. I am just a hobby baker and I get a lot of help from my 13-yearold daughter Faye.”

Local volunteers can contact national coordinator Femhe Caffery who will assign baking tasks to available volunteers.

How to make huge changes in your life If you want to make huge changes to your life but are not sure how then start by making tiny changes, one at a time.

In 2003, Sir Dave Brailsford took over the British Cycling Team. He wasn’t a professional coach, and he’d only been an amateur cyclist.

Instead of trying to rebuild the perennially weak cycling team from scratch, Brailsford implemented a business strategy called the aggregation of marginal gains. He simply tried to improve every aspect of the cyclists’ lives - training, nutrition, sleep, and equipment - by 1%.

He didn’t go out looking for new sponsors; some bike companies even refused to sell to the team because they were so bad. Instead, he first improved their seats to make them more comfortable.

And he didn’t implement a radical diet change or workout regime; he simply improved each by 1% at a time. When a tiny new gain had been realised, he asked himself, “How do I improve this feature by 1% now?”

In 2008, the British Cycling team won eight gold medals, four silver, and two bronze: More medals than in its entire history combined. Then Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome, two members of the team, won the Tour de France four times combined over the next decade.

Aggregating small wins works.

You don’t need a radical new diet. You don’t need a “detox” (they’re fake anyway). You don’t need to start jogging five kilometres every morning. You just

need to take one tiny step.

My training has been very focused on running for the last six months, and I’m training hard. But my nutrition has left a lot to be desired: Working and studying long hours from home most of the time means every food is available all the time, and it’s all amazing, coupled with often too much caffeine. I knew I needed to get my nutrition back in line for my brain’s sake … and my body’s. But recently, I didn’t jump right back into counting macros or anything too fancy.

I just started writing it down.

I downloaded the MyFitnessPal App because it integrates with the other Apps we use at Activate. I started recording my food. Guess what? I immediately started thinking more before each meal.

I didn’t track calories or make use of the macro balancing feature. I literally just started entering my food into the App. That’s it.

If your diet is already solid, you can start by just doing 10 squats. Call it a day. Try for 11 or 10 push-ups the next day. But don’t think about that yet: just move.

Passport Applications Q. I noticed recently that my passport will expire shortly. What is the quickest way to renew it?

A. The Passport Service processes Passport Online applications as a priority. Applying online is the fastest way of getting your passport. You can track the progress of your passport online. In general, adult renewals when all the information on your passport is the same as your previous passport are processed within 10 working days.

If you are renewing through the Passport Express service, you should allow at least 20 working days for your application to be processed (not including postage times). This period may be extended at certain times of the year due to increased application numbers.

It’s important to note that if you have already submitted a paper application, you cannot apply online. Updates on services and the latest turnaround times are available on the Passport Service’s website www.dfa.ie/passports.

Q. My partner is applying for a passport for the first time. Can this be done online?

A. Passport Online is open to all applicants. However, it is important to note that first time applications are complex and require additional time to process.

This is because the Passport Office have to verify all documents submitted and to ensure the identity of the applicant.

These applications can take approximately 20 working days to process.

Q. Can I apply for my passport in person at the Passport Office?

A. It is not recommended to apply directly to the Passport Office for your first passport. The counter service in the Passport Office is designed to accommodate people who need to renew their passports urgently, and don’t have enough time to apply in other ways. You can make your first-time applications using the counter service, but it cannot be processed urgently – it will take at least 20 working days (not including postage times). Applications made in person are more expensive than applying online or through Passport Express.

Q. My sister is living abroad. Can she use the online service when she is outside of Ireland?

A. You can renew online from anywhere in the world, as long as your previous Irish passport is no more than five years out of date.

Q. How much does it cost to apply for a passport?

A. Standard 10-year, 34-page passport: Passport Online - €75 (+ €5 postage if you live outside Ireland) Passport Express - €80 (+€9.50 fee) In-person - €95 Large 10-year 66-page passport Passport Online – €105 (+ €5 postage if

Q. What happens if I lose my passport or it is stolen?

A. If you are an Irish citizen living in Ireland and you have lost your Irish passport, or it has been stolen, you must let the Passport Office know immediately and report the loss or theft to the Garda Síochána.

If you lose your passport or it is stolen abroad, you must contact the local police and request a written statement that you have reported the loss of your passport. The Passport Service will not provide you with a new travel document without a police report. In addition you must contact your nearest Irish embassy or consulate. They may be able to give you a replacement passport that will let you finish your trip or an emergency travel document that will get you home.

If you are in a country where there is no Irish representation, you may contact an embassy or consulate of another EU Member State. In some cases, the embassy or consulate of another EU Member State may issue you with an EU Emergency Travel Document (ETD).

Q. What happens if I need to renew my passport in an emergency?

A. In the case of an emergency situation such as the death or serious illness of an immediate family member, or for emergency medical treatment of the applicant, you should contact the Passport Service’s Customer Service Hub. Further information will be requested by the Passport Service including verifiable proof of emergency.

In cases of genuine emergency, the duty officer at the Department of Foreign Affairs can issue an emergency travel document of limited validity. There is a charge of €110 for this out-of-hours emergency service. Sensational sense of style at local fashion event Top Irish and Kerry fashion designers and independent boutiques were the stars of the show on Thursday at the Muckross Park Hotel.

The style was sensational both on and off the runway in what was one of the most hotly anticipated events of the season 'Fashion at the Muckross Park' produced in association with Kellihers Toyota Tralee.

Guests travelled from all over Kerry and far beyond, for an exclusive preview of new collections from top Irish and Kerry designers and boutiques. The show was opened with a collection bursting with colour, happiness and light by acclaimed Irish fashion couturier Helen Cody and the finale was a rare retrospective showcase from another multi-award winning couturier Delphine Grandjouan. Produced by Orla Diffily and the team at Upfront Model Management, in association with Ray Stack Productions, it is the first in a series of shows designed to put Irish fashion creatives back into the spotlight and promote local businesses and fashion sustainability.

RTÉ's 'Eye On Nature' wildlife winner revealed A strikingly beautiful image of a Red Squirrel taken by Jimmy McDonnell from Newcastle Co. Wicklow has just been announced as the overall winner in the RTÉ 'Eye On Nature' wildlife photography competition.

RTÉ and the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland with the Office of Public Works launched this year’s competition in January on 'Mooney Goes Wild' on RTÉ Radio 1 and 'Today' on RTÉ One. RTÉ Presenter Derek Mooney, was in the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, Dublin to announce the overall winner.

All 12 finalists in the competition, including Peter O'Toole from Killarney and Karol Waszkiewicz from Tralee, gathered at the National Botanic Gardens where they got to see their large-scale images displayed.

Throughout the Today show Derek spoke with each finalist about their image and how they captured it.

The judging panel were Dr Matthew Jebb who is Director of the National Botanic Gardens, Anne Sommerfield, an award-winning filmmaker, and award-winning wildlife photographer Mike Brown.

The judges narrowed down from the 3,000 entries to 100 photos and then again down to the final 12 images before selecting the overall winning image. All these photographs represent the rich natural heritage that Ireland has to offer, showcasing our island’s biodiversity.

judges selected Jimmy’s image as the overall winner as ‘it is the perfect combination of art and technique. Technically it is very well taken but has an artistic feel to it, almost a painterly quality'.

"It's the pose. There is a lot of character in that squirrel, and the beautiful colours, it's sharp, it's well composed," Dr Matthew Jebb said. "It's got everything that a good photo needs."

After he was announced as the winning photographer Jimmy Mc Donnell said he was "delighted".

"I'm just over the moon. It's the first competition I've ever entered so I'm thrilled to bits.”

Jimmy was presented with the RTÉ 'Eye on Nature' trophy and a prize of €1,000.

An online gallery featuring the 12 finalists' photographs along with a further eight runner-up images was launched last week at rte.ie/eyeonnature.

The 12 finalists' images will be displayed in Glasnevin until June 5. It will then move to Dublin Castle, where along with all 12 of this year’s finalist images, the final 12 images in the 2021 competition will also be displayed. In the coming months, the exhibition will travel to other Office of Public Works sites across the country including Portumna Castle and Athenry Castle.

Hospice Sunflower Days are back!

Hospice Sunflower Days will return to towns and villages all over the country and this year’s event will take place next month.

Hospice and specialist palliative homecare providers nationwide are calling on the public to volunteer to sell sunflower merchandise over the course of the two days on Friday June 10 and Saturday 11.

Hospice Sunflower Days aims to raise much needed funds for hospice and specialist palliative home care providers across Ireland enabling them to continue to provide person centred, holistic and loving care to patients and their loved

ones free of charge. Hospice care is provided either in a hospice in-patient unit or in the person’s own home with specialist palliative home care nurses.

Hospices nationwide need to raise approximately €20 million each year and as our population ages, demand for hospice and specialist palliative homecare services continues to grow. Funds raised will help to purchase new equipment, upgrade hospice facilities and support local hospice services, with every Euro raised locally, staying locally.

“We are delighted to be able to return this year to our traditional on-street collections as people across Ireland are always

so supportive of their local hospice," Audrey Houlihan, Chairperson, Together for Hospice, The National Hospice Movement, and CEO at Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services, said.

Four-year-old takes mom's car for joyride!

It's a story his parents will eventually laugh about - but it was not so funny when their four-year-old son stole their car for a joyride at the weekend.

The unnamed little mini-driver - who may have been watching too much Formula One - took his mom's car, started the engine and crashed into two cars in city of Utrecht in the Netherlands on Saturday.

He then left the scene in his pyjamas and bare feet before the police were called by concerned bystanders who saw him walking down the street alone in the cold.

Police said that the child had woken up on Saturday when his father went to work, and taken his mother's car keys "to go for a drive". Thankfully no one was hurt in the incident.

On Instagram police said that they had discovered a "new Max Verstappen".

"New Max Verstappen found in (the Utrecht suburb of) Overvecht," police wrote in the post.

"Fortunately, this mini driver's adventure has come to an end with a sizzle."

The youngster enjoyed some hot chocolate at the police station and a teddy bear, before being reunited with his mum.

Asked if he could show how the car worked at the crash scene the boy who was described by his mother as "resourceful" - opened the car with the key, put it into the ignition and moved his foot to the clutch and gas pedals, police said.

Officers have since urged the parents to hide their car keys in the future.

Free digital skills classes for older people in Kerry Free in-person digital skills classes for older people rolled out across the country this week as part of the Hi Digital partnership initiative between Vodafone Ireland Foundation, Active Retirement Ireland and ALONE.

New sensory 'Cubbie’ opened in Listowel A self-contained unit that will offer comfort to children, teens and adults with sensory impairments such as ASD, Dementia, ADHD, Dyspraxia and general anxiety, has opened at one local library.

'The Cubbie' is a new sensory hub at Listowel Library which can help ease anxiety in a safe and private environment.

Its user-friendly software can generate effects like sound, visuals, coloured lights and can be adapted to the individualised sensory needs of each user.

Settings can be saved and used during future visits to Listowel Library or indeed any of the other Cubbie locations across Ireland.

‘The Cubbie’ will offer increased opportunity for more inclusive access to library services, and it will support Listowel in its objective to achieving accreditation from AsIAm (www.asiam.ie) as an Autism Friendly Town.

"Library staff look forward to engaging with the local community – parents,

teachers, carers, Special Needs Assistants and the Listowel Autism Friendly Town Committee to promote the benefits and developmental value of ‘The Cubbie’," County Librarian, Tommy O’Connor, said.

"Anyone is welcome to use this service and it can be used as a safe space for anyone seeking a calming environment in which to relax and refocus. It is also suitable for meditation, mindfulness and promoting well-being," he said.

Provision of ‘The Cubbie’ was facilitated

by Dormant Accounts Funding, as part of a Government of Ireland initiative from the Dept. Of Community and Rural Development to provide Library Supports for Marginalised, Socially Excluded and Disadvantaged Communities. Kerry County Council provided matched funding.

‘The Cubbie’ is designed and manufactured in Ireland and won a Microsoft for Start-ups Diversity in Technology Award for Disability Inclusion in 2020. It is designed to the Wheelchair Association of Ireland specification and can be used by all people regardless of age, size or ability.

In Kerry, the first class will be held at Kilmoyley Community Centre, Ballymacandrew, Ardfert, (V92 XR02) on Thursday next, May 12 at 11am.

A first of its kind, five-year programme, Hi Digital was developed to bridge the worsening digital divide in Ireland and support older people with little or no digital skills to get online.

In-person Hi Digital classes are now available to book across the country and are open to any person aged 65+ who would like to develop their digital literacy and confidence with guidance and support alongside other older people in their community.

The Hi Digital training course consists of bite-sized lessons organised around key digital themes including Internet basics and how to use online devices, as well as digital Apps and features such as social media or video calling that can enhance daily life and combat isolation.

Topics covered include sending emails,

keeping in touch with friends and family through social media or video calling, online banking and Government services online, looking up information for hobbies or travel, reading, watching and listening to news online, online shopping, using the Internet on your phone, using your phone to take and share pictures or videos, online safety and more.

“We’re so pleased to announce the national rollout of the Hi Digital face-to-face digital skills classes," Maureen Kavanagh, CEO of Active Retirement Ireland, said.

"Through this next stage of the Hi Digital programme, our in-person classes will further support older people’s participation online. This will help ensure they have the appropriate access and skills to engage with digital services, along with expanding the possibilities on offer to them from the digital shift. The Hi Digital programme is about giving older people in Ireland more choices and empowering them to learn the skills they need if they do want to get online. Classes are free and I encourage any older person who would like to improve their digital skills to get in touch and sign up.”

Windsor Castle intruder given bed for the night There was a very serious security breach at Windsor Castle after soldiers who protect Queen Elizabeth fed and entertained a man - and even let him stay the night!

The UK Ministry of Defense said it's taking the breach “extremely seriously" and that it "will be thoroughly investigated as a matter of priority" after the incident last week on April 27 while the Queen was away at Sandringham.

Posing as a priest, the man supposedly talked his way into the Victoria Barracks, situated just outside the confines of Windsor Castle.

Claiming to be a friend of the chaplain for the Cold Stream Guards, one of the regiments that protects the queen, he was let in without any form of identification being checked.

It's been reported that officers fed and entertained the man, who is believed to be known to police to suffer from mental health issues, as well giving him a bed for the night.

It wasn't until the following morning that police were contacted after officers became suspicious.

“It was only later when he started talking about how he had worked as an ejec-

tor-seat test pilot and had some organs replaced that the chaps started to get suspicious," The Sun Newspaper reported.

Thames Valley Police said in a statement; “We received a report of an intruder at Victoria Barracks in Sheet Street, Windsor, at 9.20am on Wednesday", “Officers attended and removed the intruder from the barracks. No further action was required.”

It's not the first such breach in security in Windsor. Last year police apprehended a man with a crossbow on the grounds of the castle.

It's an ideal time to take cuttings The transition between spring and summer can be quite difficult to gauge – on the one hand, winter bedding looks shabby, but, the later you plant the summer bedding, the longer lasting it will be.

In the meantime, there are plenty of jobs to be done…gardening really never has a quiet moment! Weeding is a year round job, and a never ending one, it seems.

There is a new product on the market

by Westland, called Weed Preventer.

It is a granular product which can be scattered on weed free ground. Due to plant based materials in the granules, it prevents seeds from germinating, giving you several months of weed free bliss!

I have tried out a patch and so far it is working. It does not have a weed killer in it, so does not kill existing weeds, but the plus side of that is that you can use it around shrubs safely.

This is the ideal time of year for taking basal cuttings. These are taken from this year’s growth at the base of the plant, where there is a concentration of hormones which encourage root development. Why take cuttings? Well, it is a very cost effective way of obtaining plants, especially if you have favourites, or a large garden, or many friends! You are also ensured an exact replica of the plant you take the cutting from, as opposed to seeds you might save. It is easy to take cuttings, you need very little. Just a plant, a sterile sharp knife or secateurs, and ideally rooting powder. Rooting

powder contains hormones which stimulate the formulation of roots, as well as an antifungal component, preventing your cuttings from rotting. It comes as both a powder and a gel, both are equally effective. Never use too much, always shake off the excess.

Always use material from a healthy disease free plant. Take cuttings in the morning, when the plant is not under stress from sun. Place the pieces you cut into a plastic bag to prevent wilting.

Basal cuttings are generally suitable for herbaceous plants. These are taken very near the base of the plant where there is a slight swelling. They have a high percentage success rate, as there are many hormones here. From wherever you take the cutting, trim the top and bottom, and remove the lower leaves.

Dip the lower inch into rooting powder and tap off the excess. Have a pot or tray prepared, using a mixture of cutting compost mixed with an equal amount of sand or perlite. Water well. Place your cuttings in a greenhouse, or under a clear plastic cover such as a polythene bag, to prevent drying out. Now the most difficult part: do not be tempted to pull them out to check if there are roots!

Do check them regularly for disease or rotting leaves, and keep them clean and moist.

Plants suitable for basal cuttings are: shaitan daisies, osteospermum, erigeron, dahlia, phygelius, aconite, Monkshood, helianthemum, in short, almost all perennials and herbs.

Calls for Fianna Fáil Árd Fheis to be held in Killarney A Kerry County Councillor is calling for the annual Fianna Fáil Árd Fheis to be held in Killarney.

The Árd Fheis cannot go ahead at The Citywest Hotel in Dublin on June 17 and 18 as the hotel is currently housing Ukrainian refugees and its Convention Centre is in use as an overflow for processing refugees at times when Dublin Airport is over capacity.

The Deputy Mayor of Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael Cahill has voiced his disappointment on the unavailability of the original venue but said Killarney is the perfect alternative.

“Many people had plans made, leave arranged etc in order to attend this highly important event on the political

calendar. It now appears that the venue cannot proceed with the gathering and obviously that also puts the dates into question as well for an alternative venue,” said the Rossbeigh-based Councillor.

“I would strongly suggest that Killarney is a most suitable destination with a large array of accommodation, restaurants and entertainment available, and should be considered.

“It is extremely important that the Fianna Fáil Árd Fheis goes ahead and there may not be many available options at such short notice. Killarney, being the tourism capital of Ireland, is better equipped than most, to step in and save the day.”

Noel O’Sullivan toast of Killarney as Muckross man wins Rally of the Lakes Killarney competitors took the top honours in all four categories of the Rally of the Lakes at the weekend. | By Sean Moriarty Killarney and District Motor Club (KDMC) member Noel O'Sullivan said it was the stuff of dreams on the finish ramp on Sunday evening after he and his driver, Derry man Callum Devine won the rally in dramatic circumstances.

Drama is a word often thrown around in sport, but on Sunday last, the final stage of the International Rally of the Lakes will go down in history.

Overnight leader Alastair Fisher had a 7.7-second lead coming into Sunday but a quick run up Molls Gap and Ballaghbeama by Devine early on Sunday morning cut the gap to 5.8 seconds.

Following a dead heat on the second run over the Gap, the battle came down to the final stage of the event, Caragh Lake, with just 3.1 seconds between the pair. Alastair was first on the road and halfway through when his Volkswagen Polo left the road and

he couldn’t get back out to finish the stage.

Devine and O’Sullivan held on to claim a memorable victory for the local man.

“I am speechless, it is not often I am caught for words,” he said one week after he won the opening round of the British Rally Championship alongside Osian Pryce.

“The pace is up there with all the British, European and world events I have done.”

It was a special weekend for the O’Sullivan family. Noel’s father, Noel Snr, on his 38th attempt (out of 41 events) at the Rally of the Lakes, finished second in his class in his Ford Escort. Co-driver Nicky Burke started the rally for the 25th consecutive time.

The 'Acesigns' Irish Tarmac Rally Championship leader Josh Moffett, said he was finding the going difficult all weekend, left Killarney in second place, a result which he said he was happy with. Belfast’s Jonathan Greer rounded out the podium places in his Citroen C3.

NATIONAL RALLY

National honours went to Killarney club man Rob Duggan and Ger Conway. Having com-

plained of clutch issues from the word go, Rob battled hard throughout setting multiple fastest stage times to win out by 48.9 seconds from Donegal man Kevin Eves in his Toyota Corolla Twin Cam. “Sunday was a long day,” Duggan said, after nursing his car through the final day.

As well as his clutch problems his Ford Escort suffered from a leaking head gasket and starter motor issues.

Conor Murphy and Sean Collins brought their Ford Escort home in third place overall in the national section.

“We are delighted with the clean run – drama free,” said Murphy at the finish.

Kilcummin’s Damien Fleming guided Raymond Conlon to a class in their Toyota Corolla.

Defending Kingdom of Kerry rally champion Mark Murphy and his co-driver Thomas Murphy were another crew to take top honours in their class.

Another local driver John Hickey, and his north Kerry co-driver Maurice McElligott, won their class in their unusual Fubaru Escort RS 4x4 while Denis Nagle and Brian Rowan won the 1400cc class in their Nissan Micra.

HISTORIC RALLY

Alan Ring went one better than his second place result in the Killarney Historic Rally last November by taking the historic win on his home rally in the Subaru Leg-

acy.

Alan and his co-driver Adrian Deasy had 45.8 seconds to spare over another local crew Fergus O’Meara and Ronald Riordan in their Ford Escort.

Ring suffered brake problems on Saturday but recovered the lost time over the Sunday loop of stages.

“The pedal went to the floor,” said Ring in Parc Ferme on Saturday evening. "It did not inspire confidence.”

His win on Sunday was the second time in a row that he won the historic section of his home rally – his previous victory coming in 2019, the last time the rally ran.

Local garage man Pat Looney and his co-driver Amy Burke, who is better known for her equestrian skills, won their class in a Ford Escort Mk1.

JUNIOR RALLY

Killarney and District Motor Club member Jason Farrell has extended his lead at the top of the standings in the Irish Junior Tarmac Rally Championship following an emphatic Junior rally win. This was his third victory of the year.

Local debutants Gary Healy and Gearoid Moynihan brought their Honda Civic home in third, a fantastic result for them given it was their first outing on home soil.

The rally was held in some glorious weather over the weekend, with just some showers early on Sunday morning to test the driver’s skill and technique.

Thousands of spectators lined the stages in what was one of the biggest crowds seen at the International Rally of the Lakes for years.

‘Nephew’ gets job in car sales Kerry’s main Suzuki dealer, Dineen and O’Donoghue, is the latest local business to get the Bernard Casey treatment.

The Cork Road dealership has been featured on the popular South Kerry comedian’s social media channels in recent days.

It shows ‘Nephew’, one of the characters in Casey’s life shows, and his attempts to work as a car salesman. The usual hiccups and disasters ensue as ‘Nephew’ gets his sales lines wrong and sets off several car alarms as he stumbles through the showroom.

“I just wanted to do something different,” dealer principal Padraig Dineen told the Killarney Advertiser.

Red Bull video catches Killarney at its best What must be one of the most unusual videos ever produced in Killarney has been released by Red Bull in an effort to promote the Drift Masters European Championship.

The spectacular video shows drifting champion Conor Shanahan driving his Toyota GT86 at seemingly impossible angles on the N71.

The video was shot last month under an official road closing order granted by Kerry County Council.

It was recorded at several well-known locations along the route, including Derrycunnihy Church, Ladies View and Moll’s Gap. The whole process was done under a shroud of secrecy, only a handful of lo-

cal motorsport enthusiasts were made aware of the event beforehand and some members of local motor clubs were on hand to marshal proceedings.

The film has been distributed worldwide – drifting is particularly popular in Eastern European countries – and will showcase Killarney and its environs to a very different and new audience.

It is being used as a pre-season promotional video ahead of the opening round of the European Drift Masters Championship which gets underway this weekend in Mondello Park in County Kildare.

“With so many of our incredible fans

and drivers patiently waiting for the day when we can finally get back on track, we needed to ensure that once we could do so, we could pull out all the stops to make this season not only the most adrenaline-fuelled, entertainment-filled we’ve ever pieced together, but also the most competitive season Drift Masters European Championship has ever seen,” said an event spokesperson.

Cork man Shanahan is a designated Red Bull athlete, like Aghadoe-based World Rally Championship co-driver Paul Nagle who was one of the few guests at the event.

A lesson in what not to do The S&P 500 ended last week down 14%, a bitter pill to swallow for many investors. Still, these losses pale in comparison to the earth-shattering declines that some of the more speculative sides of the market are currently experiencing.

Today's article – A lesson in what not to do.

The tech-led NASDAQ index is down 22% in 2022. ARKK, once the highest-flying tech fund on Wall Street, has come crashing down to earth, down over 70% from its highs and lastly, spare a thought for those taking maximum risk; NFT and Altcoin traders are getting their faces ripped off as we speak.

But didn't we all know this was going to happen?

Didn't the incessant and illogical rise of these speculative Crypto and Tech positions have to end in tears eventually?

The simple answer is yes.

But the 'when' and 'how' were always unknown.

When everyone is playing and winning, it's easy to convince yourself that you can play and win as well. It's hard to imagine the music stopping when it has been playing for so long.

People do crazy, illogical things all the time, even when they know better. This isn't the first time that greed pushed investors towards self-destruction, and it certainly won't be the last.

This article isn't intended as a snide rebuke of the investors who hold these positions. Many of those currently watching their trading accounts crater also made phenomenal gains in 2020 and 2021.

This is merely a cautionary tale highlighting that markets are cyclical, investment strategies come in and out of favour, and nothing lasts forever.

Most importantly, always know the difference between speculating and investing.

As humans, we are drawn to speculation.

We buy lotto tickets not based on probability but on hope. You can ignore the statistical improbability of winning by uttering four naïve but equally alluring words: "ya, but what if".

After all, technically speaking, 'it could be you'.

In recent years, many people 'invested' in their stock position based on the same rationale. It wasn't based on the company's solid fundamentals or attractive free cash flows; it was determined purely on the basis of 'what if?'. What if it continues going up? What if it doubles again? Let's face it, for many; this argument can be far more enticing than any precise financial projections.

There is nothing technically wrong with

this speculative approach, provided you realise you're doing it, and it is done in small doses. Still, you need to separate this from your investing portfolio. They're not the same thing.

90% of your assets should be positioned to generate returns over the long term.

Your focus should not be on betting it all on a low probability outcome with the outside promise of winning it big.

This seems obvious, but many convince themselves they are investing based on probability and risk-adjusted returns when they are actually just closing their eyes, crossing their fingers and spinning the wheel.

Make sure you know the difference.

INVESTING 101

Create a balanced and diversified portfolio of equities, real estate, commodities and alternatives based on your view of the world in the future, your time horizon and your risk tolerance.

Invest in indexes you believe will be successful over the long run and then allow enough margin for error through diversification to protect when you are wrong.

And you will be wrong, but that's ok. You just need to be right more often than you are wrong.

Public Liability can be selected within a range of €1.3 million to €6.5 million and covers your legal liability in the event that you are negligent and required to pay compensation for bodily injuries or damage to third party property. Projected turnover will determine the rate charged. Products Liability provides cover if a third party is injured by a product that you have sold.

Business Interruption covers consequential loss of gross profits following an insured event such as a fire. It is important to review your gross profits sum insured on an annual basis.

Professional Indemnity Insurance pro-

vides cover for claims against you or your company for the financial consequences of negligent acts, errors, omissions or breaches by you or your company when providing a professional service. If you advise others then you may be exposed to claims for breach of your professional duty of care.

Learn to manage rosacea through your skin care routine Rosacea is a skin condition that affects both men and women and it's not to be ignored as it doesn't go away and get can get so much worse if left untreated.

Kerry on the treble

Kerry teams aiming for football trifecta this weekend | Men, women and U20s all in championship action Three Kerry teams are hoping to make this weekend a very special one indeed for the county’s loyal Gaelic football supporters.

The Kingdom’s men’s, women’s and U20 teams are all facing important championship matches on Saturday and Sunday with plenty at stake across the board.

First up tomorrow (Saturday) is a mouthwatering double-header at Páirc Uí Rinn. The Kerry ladies take on Tipperary in the Munster semi-final at 3.30pm with the men meeting Cork in their provincial semi-final at 6pm.

Then, on Sunday, the Kerry U20s travel to O’Moore Park in Portlaoise for their eagerly anticipated All-Ireland semi-final against Tyrone. Throw-in there is at 1pm.

Whether you’re travelling to the games or plan on watching at home (the senior men’s clash is being shown by Sky

Sports and the U20s match will be live on TG4), it promises to be a cracking weekend of action.

BUILD

The Kerry ladies will be eager to build on their fantastic league campaign by challenging for the Munster title, starting with Saturday’s bout against Tipperary. The last time the teams met, on the opening day of the 2020 league, Kerry prevailed with four points to spare.

Kerry’s last championship match against Tipp came in a relegation qualifier in 2021, a game which Darragh Long and Declan Quill’s side won comfortably. Tipp eventually avoided relegation to intermediate by defeating Tyrone in the playoff.

With that in mind, Kerry will have to be considered favourites to advance to the final against either Cork or Waterford.

That decider is down for the following weekend, May 15.

CAUTION

Jack O’Connor’s men will also be expected to overcome their semi-final opponents, Cork, with something to spare, although the players won’t need to cast their memories back too far to find a cautionary tale. Kerry will be desperate to avoid a repeat of the shock defeat of 2020, and with a squad that is approaching full strength they should have more than enough to do so.

The only lingering injury concerns for Kerry are Mike Breen, who is unfortunately out for the rest of the season, Dan O’Donoghue (leg), who is expected back in a couple of weeks, and Greg Horan (ankle).

Seánie O’Shea, David Moran, Paul Murphy and Stefan Okunbor are all available for selection after recovering from their respective injuries.

Cork, meanwhile, will be without influential midfielder Ian Maguire, but they

should be in better shape overall than they were throughout their disappointing league campaign.

HARD TASK

Assuming that the men and women do the business on the Saturday, it will be left to the U20s to complete the treble on the Sunday. Their task is, on paper, the hardest. Tyrone looked good in their Ulster final win over Cavan with Ruairí Canavan, son of Peter The Great, putting in a particularly eye-catching performance.

It will be interesting to see who gets the nod to start for Kerry considering the fact that their substitutes effectively won them the Munster final against Cork. They have shown themselves to be a second-half team. It could well be that it’s the players who finish, rather than the players who start, who decide the team’s fate.

6.05.2022 When the Angelus bells toll six times tomorrow and the signature tune of the RTÉ 1 News spins its way, the ball will be thrown in at Páirc Uí Rinn and age-old rivals will battle it out for supremacy. The usual bragging rights for supporters are at stake. At face value it looks like Kerry easily jumping that first hurdle on the road to Sam, hopefully secured before the calendar is even flipped over to August.

Kerry will be hoping to win the coveted canister on Route 1.

After all the hullabaloo about Cork taking the ‘Páirc Uí Rinn or Nowhere’ stand (and, as I wrote weeks ago, the Cork footballers were correct to dig in), it has been fixed for tomorrow (Saturday) at 6pm. Thankfully, the Kerry ladies will play in the curtain-raiser and that is very welcome news for this writer. At least the Munster Council made this one good decision. They made a mess of the main tie, dithering and vacillating and frustrating players, management and supporters alike. It is their gig and they should not have been depending on the generosity of the Kerry County Board to facilitate the staging of the game.

We hope this bail-out will not jump up and harm Kerry’s bid to win back the Sam Maguire, as happened last year when they agreed to a postponement of the Tyrone game.

HOT FAVOURITES

On paper Kerry seem to have all the odds to defeat Cork, and then most likely Tipperary in the Munster final. They should still have too much for Galway/Mayo and whichever county will survive the shark infested waters of Ulster.

Tyrone may appear unlikely to retain their All-Ireland title after that unexpected heavy defeat to Derry last weekend, even with the gift of a home game at Healy Park, Omagh. The signs were ominous for Tyrone with over a half-dozen seasoned players stepping aside. Why? Having said that, just a few weeks ago we saw at first hand here in the Fitzgerald Stadium that they still have the Indian sign on Kerry.

In Leinster, Dublin have not gone away with key men Brian Fenton and Con O’Callaghan putting Wexford to the sword. They will be hard pushed by a resurgent Kildare who are going great guns under Glenn Ryan, the manager since Jack O’Connor left the Lilywhites in haste for richer potential dividend in the Kingdom.

Jack is on his third mission with Kerry because he believes that the talent is there to win the Sam Maguire, absent since 2014 when Kieran O’Leary and Fionn Fitzgerald raised the most coveted Cup in the GAA.

TICKING THE BOXES

Everything we have seen on Jack’s rehabilitation of an unlucky Kerry team these past eight years ticks the right boxes.

They impressed all the way through the league to lift that title.

The big plus is that Kerry have consolidated the defence. Start with the basics. Concede as little as possible to the opposition’s forwards by tightening up the central spine at 3 and 6. Play a direct style of football, preferring, whenever possible, to kick pass the ball directly into the scoring forwards.

Jack knows only too well from the great sport of eagling, which is still thriving in his native South Kerry, that you never leave the best gun dog at home on those Sunday hunts. In David Clifford he has the most prolific scorer in Ireland. At worst he is a handful and needs close marking; at his best he is unmarkable.

Jack won’t be holding that ace in reserve tomorrow.

WEAK MIDFIELD

This Kerry team is still not the guaranteed title-winner, with big question marks around midfield. Na Gaeil duo Diarmuid O’Connor and Jack Barry has been just about okay. After being tested in very competitive league matches, they have not been able to control the central area and were beaten by too many pairings especially by Tyrone and Mayo.

David Moran is making his way back to full fitness after spending much of the past year recovering from injury.

This great servant had to fight his way back from cruciate injury, not once but twice. He is well into his thirties and, in the fast-moving modern game, it is too much to expect this veteran to command the pivotal central axis of the Kerry team for 70 minutes.

Whatever pairing Kerry name for 8 and 9 tomorrow, going forward they will need Moran to be available to enter the fray for at least half of the game. Stefan Okunbor is also back in training after dislocating his shoulder in the dying minutes of Na Gaeil’s All-Ireland club semi-final. He’s a big young raw boy but he is very athletic and may well prove to give Kerry the physicality to deliver aerial dominance.

Good to report that both Moran and Okunbur are back playing club football.

Joe O’Connor is also a good option.

PREDICTABLE LINEOUT

I suppose the team Jack was due to announce this evening will be fairly predictable. He has most of the panel injury free and available for selection. Starting at number 1, he has the two Shanes for choice of netminder. Rathmore man Shane Ryan will probably get the nod, with Shane Murphy on standby. Murphy has the ability to bypass a beaten midfield with his kickouts, so that is a fallback strategy.

Dan O’Donoghue was a shoo-in for corner back after a very solid league campaign, but he has been out injured for too long for Jack to gamble on the solid Spa defender. However, he will be the ideal man to bring in if there are any leaks appearing, a better bet than Dylan Casey.

Great to see Jason Foley adapting well to full back and tomorrow is his opportunity to contain Brian Hurley. I note that AllStar Tom O’Sullivan has been ordered by the boss to concentrate on the numero uno duty of a back, particularly anyone in the full back line. He is well able to sally upfield and kick a score. That is fine playing with Dingle, but it is fraught with danger at intercounty level. No point scoring a point at the expense of leaking goals at the other end.

Tadhg Morley will be flanked by Gavin White and probably Brian Ó Beaglaoich.

Jack has good options to bring in if things are not going well. Mike Breen would have got the vital number 6 geansaí, but he has been out long-term since pre–Sigerson. Was it a misdiagnosis that scuppered his chances? Paul Murphy is rejuvenated. Graham O’Sullivan is also in the mix.

Na Gaeil’s Barry and O’Connor will start i lár na páirce, where Cork will be weakened by the absence of Ian Maguire through injury.

It’s hard to know where to play Seánie O’Shea, but he is vital as a free-taker, as good as the best in the country. He lacks pace and is often exposed when he tries to track back. Paudie Clifford’s pace and ability to weave and swerve before parting to a better placed forward makes him an ideal utility centre forward. The older

Clifford may be wearing the number 13 geansaí, but he will have a licence to rove outfield, hovering up all the breaking ball and dropping back to apply the plasters at midfield.

Dara Moynihan will be doing a lot of the preparatory work that Galvin did in the past. O’Shea at 11 and maybe Stephen O’Brien on the other wing. Not my first preference, I must add. Adrian Spillane or Micheál Burns are options.

Plenty choices in the brilliant full forward line: David Clifford, Paudie Clifford, Paul Geaney, Tony Brosnan and Killian Spillane. The first three will probably start with Brosnan sure to go in at some stage.

CORK UNDERDOGS

Cork are complete underdogs, but they will give it a great shot on the confined dimensions of Páirc Ui Rinn. They will be without influential midfielder Maguire and will once again depend on Hurley to punish Kerry. He gave Jason Foley a lot of trouble last year in Killarney, but the Ballydonoghue man is in a much better frame of mind for 2022.

Goalkeeper Micheál Óg Martin is a fine keeper and will have Micheál Mór supporting him on a day off from Taoiseach’s duties. Seán Powter from Douglas is a fine defender but he is very prone to injury.

Keith Ricken tried 44 players during the league and the McGrath Cup in an effort to build some kind of cohesive side. They barely escaped the ignominy of sliding into the Division 3. He has had to step aside due to health considerations, but Cork had a ready replacement in John Cleary. The former senior player has plenty of experience with managing the Cork minors and U20s. This is a tougher hill to climb.

Anything else but a comfortable Kerry win will be a shock tomorrow, even more so than the humbling experience of Tyrone at Healy Park on Sunday last.

The town I loved so well lifted the pride of Derry. What do you think of that now, Joe Brolly? I will be interested on your take on it. Will you have one over Donaghy on this one?

ATTENDANCE

I predict that this Kerry v Cork championship game will have the smallest attendance for decades. Many Kerry supporters will not travel, fed up with the uncertainty of the arrangements. The vast majority of Cork GAA followers opt for hurling. They are far more worried about the hurlers’ trouncing by Limerick and the galling defeat to Clare rubbed more salt into the wounds. They have no expectations of a football revival.

The limited capacity of 11,000 at Páirc Uí Rinn will meet the demand, a far cry from the 21,000 to 32,000 one expects at Páirc Uí Chaoímh or at the Fitzgerald Stadium.

Either way, Kerry to win with plenty to spare.

SPSL named Basketball School of the Year The honours just keep rolling in for Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra and their all-conquering basketball programme.

Fresh off their impressive victories at national level in both the minor and junior leagues, the Rathmore school was named Basketball Ireland Boys A School of the Year. Their popular coach, Jim Hughes, was also named Boys Coach of the Year.

In total, SPSL’s basketball teams competed in five All-Ireland finals this season, winning all but one of them.

"Winning school of the year is a fantastic achievement and deserving for all the hard work of the players and management,” Principal Denis Kerins said.

“Congratulations too to our long serving and dedicated coach Jim Hughes on his richly deserved award.”

Hughes, who led the minors to a 63-29

win over Coláiste Éanna of Dublin and the juniors to a 41-30 win over St Pat’s Castleisland, was quick to praise the dedication of his players throughout the campaign.

"The boys worked really hard throughout the year and all the work being done at club level is helping the school basketball programme,” Hughes said.

Cathal Casey and Damien Moynihan top scored for the minors with 14 points in their final while Oisín Hurley and Paul Togher (nine each) also made telling contributions. For the juniors, Conor Moynihan (14), Damien Moynihan (8) and Seán McAuliffe (8) accounted for the bulk of the scoring.

NUMBER 1: The St Brigid's team who emerged victorious in the All-Ireland final.

Pres girls claim All-Ireland crown The St Brigid’s minor girls basketball team are All-Ireland champions following a comprehensive 47-10 victory over Presentation Kilkenny in the National Basketball Arena in Dublin.

The Pres had a spread of scorers in the decider, a testament to the team’s strength in depth. Clodagh Clancy netted 10 points while Ciara O’Sullivan (8), Laura Healy (8), Clíona Moynihan (6), Keira Moynihan (4), Kate Healy (4), Abby Doherty (3), Martha Myers (2) and Liadh Forde (2) also found the target.

The Killarney girls came up against a strong Kilkenny team on the day but their display was a defensive masterclass mixed with flowing attacking play that resulted in excellent fast break points.

Brigid’s were superb all year long. After starting the season unbeaten, they won the regional final in Ballybunion to progress to the All-Ireland series. They won

the southwest region and then drew Blarney at home in the All-Ireland qualifier where they won comfortably.

The quarter -final and semi-finals took place in the National Basketball Arena where Coláiste Mhuire AG (Cork) and Loretto (Dawkey) provided the opposition. The girls put in two high-scoring performances to get into the All-Ireland final.

Another fine showing in the final led to national glory. A healthy travelling support helped the girls to get over the line.

Hard work pays off for Workmen’s After a long winter training programme for all their rowers, Workmen’s Rowing Club put all their hard work to use as the regatta season got underway for 2022.

They started the season off in Drinagh, West Cork for the Drinagh Head. The club’s J14 and J15 girls crews got their racing season underway and had a fine performances for their first ever regatta experiences. The Club 2 double of Aoibhinn Coffey and Siobhán Burns won their event in fine style to set up a great season of rowing ahead for these ladies.

Ava Rudden also won out the final of her single skull J18 event, which was a great start for her season, and Workmen’s men’s double and single skulls also performed well in all events.

Next up was a trip to O'Briens Bridge, which included a fine, early start for all

competitors and a long day’s rowing in tough conditions. Workmen’s J14 and J15 girls continued their great performance and finished very well in their races. Steady progress was seen in these girls’ efforts and smiles all around. The Club 2 ladies crews were once again a force to be reckoned with as Aoibhinn Coffey and Siobhán Burns finished second in their final.

The men’s crews also competed very well in their single skull events in very tough conditions on the day. Ben Cussen and Caoilin Ireland teamed up here as a double and came in close second in their final.

Last weekend the club descended upon the National Rowing Centre in Inniscarra for the Skibbereen Regatta. The Club 2 ladies crews both made the final of their double event with 2nd and 3rd place finishes and a very impressive 3rd place

for the club’s J14 girls crew. The Club 2 ladies quad crew of Siobhán Burns, Ciara Moynihan, Lucy Spelman and Aoibhinn Coffey - coxed by the one and only Mickey Joe Burns - finished 2nd in the sweep

quad and won their A final on Saturday.

This was the icing on the cake after what was a fantastic weekend for Workman’s.

Next on the agenda is the Castleconnell Sprints on May 14.

Killarney secure camogie Féile title The Killarney Camogie Club U15 girls have advanced to the National Féile Finals following a spirited and skilful display at last weekend’s county tournament.

With seven clubs competing across two divisions the competition was fierce but it was the impressive Killarney side who prevailed in Division 1.

Killarney played Tralee Parnells on Friday night in their opening game and came away with their first win. On Saturday the final two group stages were played with only one win needed to secure their spot in the Division 1 Final on Monday. First up was Cillard who started off much the brighter, converting a goal and a point in the opening 10 minutes.

Killarney composed themselves, however, and they chipped away to reduce the deficit. A few positional changes in the second half was the nail in Cillard’s coffin as two excellent goals from play saw Killarney take the lead and, ultimately, the game.

With enough done to secure one of the final spots, Killarney fielded a younger team against Causeway in the afternoon’s last game. This was, nevertheless, another close encounter with only a couple of points separating the two sides at the finish.

The final on Monday was a repeat of the 2021 Féile final with Killarney and Causeway headlining once again. This Causeway team had never suffered a defeat and they cruised to U14 county title in 2021. Knowing they were coming in as the underdogs, every one of the Killarney panel dug in their heels and got ready for

battle.

Both sides struggled to convert scores in the first half with Causeway only managing to register one point before the break. With little separating the teams, it seemed likely that obvious that a goal would go a long way towards securing a win. Killarney, having one of the best freetakers in the county, were able to keep Causeway in their sights until seven minutes from the end when Causeway converted two frees to pull two ahead.

Not to be outdone, a breaking ball in the square landed perfectly for Shannon Murphy to whip it into the back of the net.

Causeway persevered and managed to win a free right in front of the goals, which they duly scored. The game was now tied up with only minutes to go, and Killarney battled to gain possession. Placed balls had kept them in the game and a free just inside the 65m line was a lifeline. Once again, the accuracy of Killarney’s frees held true and they came out the right side of a thrilling match.

Killarney now proceed to the National Féile Finals in June. Well done to both teams and all teams involved over the weekend.

KERRY U15 BOYS ADVANCE TO FINAL

Continuing on from their win in Barcelona the Kerry U15 boys made the shorter trip to Charleville to take on Limerick County in the SFAI Munster Inter League semi-final.

After a tight first half where Kerry had a goal disallowed, the vital breakthrough came 15 minutes into the second half when Aaron Harty scored. Tadgh O’Connor quickly made it 2-0 and then the same player added a third. Dara Lynch wrapped up the scoring from the penalty spot to set up a decider against Limerick District.

INTER INTO U12 GIRLS CUP FINAL

Inter Kenmare are into the U12 Girls Cup final after a 5-0 win away at Fenit Samphires in the first of the semi-finals. Their goals came from Saoirse Hussey 3, Niamh Healy, Amelia O’Sullivan.

MEK GALAXY BEAT KILLORGLIN

MEK Galaxy won away at Killorglin B to move into the Last 8 of the John Murphy Shield thanks goals from James Murphy, Nathan O’Sullivan, Donnacha Vaughan, Harry O’Mahony, Cade Johnson and Jamie Murphy.

MURPHY GOAL SEES GALAXY THROUGH

MEK Galaxy progressed to the Last 8 of the John Joe Naughton U13 Cup thanks to a Danny Murphy goal that saw them win 1-0 at home to Castleisland.

Also through are Fenit Samphires who won at Camp Juniors thanks to goals from Mikey Corridan who got three and one each from Dara Harty, Tom Lenihan and Luke O’Carroll.

A very good start and taking our chances saw us go into the break with a three-goal lead. Park rallied in the second half and got a well-deserved goal and were on the front foot most of the second half but our boys remained resilient in defence and held out for the win. Killarney Legion GAA LADIES UPDATE: A quiet week on the playing fields for our teams but the one team who was in action made it count.

The U12 girls, having qualified for the B Final of the South Kerry League Final, faced the only team to get the better of them in the group stages, Rathmore. Playing in Direen the visitors hit the ground running, struck an early goal and that was the difference at the halfway stage of the first half. The whistle blew at the end of a cagey opening period with Rathmore leading by 1-2 to 0-2. Whatever went on at half time in the Legion dressing room it should have been bottled as it saw a big transformation in the girls play. The defending was so good they kept their opponents scoreless for the entire second half. Whilst that wouldn't have been enough for victory, the forwards were not to be found wanting as they struck for 3-2 and after a difficult first half the girls came through with flying colours to claim the first piece of silverware of the season on a scoreline of 3-4 to 1-2. Well done to the team and coaches. PLAQUE UNVEILING: On Tuesday, April 25 Uachtaran CLG Larry McCarthy unveiled a plaque on Railway Road to honour our founding fathers on the setting up of Dr Crokes in 1886. A large crowd attended this event blessed with glorious sunshine along with the descendants of these pioneers. Great credit is due to Canon Tom Looney and Eamonn Fitzgerald who pioneered this project.

ACADEMY: We continued with fun and games on Saturday. It’s great to see the improvement in the players since our return. We continue every Saturday with hurling from 10 until 11 and football from 11 until 12 for boys and girls in the Killarney parish. We welcome new members so please bring a friend SPRING CLEAN AND GEAR EXCHANGE: We set up a boot and gear exchange at the academy on Saturday and will continue for the next few Saturday from 10 until 12. We got a great response. If anyone has pre-owned boots and playing gear that they have grown out of, that could do with a new home bring them along and exchange them with other academy members. It's good for the household spring clean, it helps out other members and it is good for the environment. We are looking for boots and playing gear.

6.05.2022 SPORT NOTES came out on top of this competitive game after both teams displayed great intensity supplemented by some great scores. The visitors lead by 1-2 after 8 minutes but after a great penalty save by Brendan Kealy we really upped our game and slotted over numerous points and a goal by Noel Duggan. However two goals by the opposition saw us trail by 3-5 to 1-9 at half time. The second half saw us take more control and two goals by the O’Shea brothers Paul and Mark sealed a great victory. Kevin McCarthy, Kieran Murphy, Paul O’Shea and Noel Duggan stood out but this really was a team performance and younger players like Andy Lowin, Cian Foley, Philip O’Leary and Mark O’Shea also made their presence felt.

MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIP: Congratulations to Dara O’Callaghan and his Kerry teammates on their Munster Championship victory over Cork last week.

GOLF CLASSIC: Our trip to Kenmare Golf Course proved to be a most enjoyable experience in glorious sunshine. Well done to all the prize winners and a particular thank you to all those who sponsored teams and tee boxes. All these are available for viewing on our Facebook page.

Listry GAA JUVENILE UPDATE: Results. U15 County League Div 1A Rd 5 - Keel/Listry 3-8 Spa 0-10. U11s had a good workout on Thursday evening v Ballyduff in Allman Park in the non-competitive county league. U9s had a successful trip to John Mitchels this morning in Rd 2 of the go games league while our U7s were in Fossa. Both teams played well and enjoyed their matches by all accounts.

Milltown/Castlemaine 'A' made the trip to Kilcummin on Friday last. Milltown/ Castlemaine made a tremendous start, leading 1-2 to 0-0 inside five minutes as Cathal Moriarty raised a green flag with a shot drilled low into the bottom corner of Brendan Kealy's net. Gradually the hosts reeled their way back into the game, thanks in large part to the scoring exploits of Paul O'Shea and Noel Duggan in their inside forward line who scored 2-11 in total. It was Duggan who got the home side's first goal but two quick fire goals in reply from Cathal Moriarty and Eanna O'Connor meant Kilcummin trailed by two at the half time interval, Milltown/ Castlemaine leading 3-5 to 1-9. The second half was a much different affair as Kilcummin dominated from start to finish with Kieran Murphy and Kevin O'Gorman leading the way around the middle of the park. Jerome Flynn did open the second half with a pointed effort for Milltown/ Castlemaine on the turn but that's as good as matters got for the away side on the evening as two goals in quick succession from Paul O'Shea and Cian Foley along with six further points put paid to

Killarney Rugby U18 GIRLS: Last Saturday our U18 girls travelled to Ballincollig to take on Bantry in the Munster U18 Development Bowl final. A fantastic match, our girls gave it their all but were beaten by what was a very strong Bantry side. Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club CUP: Last Sunday we took to the waters of Lough Lein, fishing for the Batty O’Brien Memorial Cup .Conditions were very favorable with nice wind and overcast skies and a healthy weigh in followed from the day afloat. Top 5 rods on the day were as follows. 1st Boris Uzik, 2nd Steve Cambell, 3rd Denis O’Leary, 4th Aidan O’Callaghan, 5th Tom Dennehy. Heaviest trout went to the rod of Paul Lawton. At this stage of the year our angler of the year points race has the following standing. In front with 19 points is Steve Cambell, followed by Boris Uzik on 17 points and Liam Buckley in third on 9 points.

MUNSTER LAKE COMPETITION: Takes place this coming Sunday, May 8. We are delighted to have two teams entered and with them all Tight Lines for the Competition.

SYMPATHIES: Sadly we also pass on our deepest sympathies to all the Bambury family on the sad passing of Bart. We were honoured to have Bart as a member of our club for many years and always admired his determination when supporting St Josephs School in Beaufort. We run an annual fundraiser for the school, inaugurated by Bart and his late brother Jerry,

and Bart was centre stage presenting the winning trophy for many years - a design he got commissioned in memory of their late father Tom. Bart was an avid angler and a gentleman. He will be missed on the banks of Lough Lein. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
