Ambitious Killarney cycle infrastructure project unveiled Killarney could soon have a cycling infrastructure to rival any of the great cycling cities of continental Europe. | By Sean Moriarty That is according to Kerry County Council officials who presented a four-part cycling plan to an online public meeting on Wednesday night.

The plans were presented by Kerry County Council’s Senior Engineer David Doyle and a question and answers session was moderated by Brian Looney, the Killarney resident who is the Council’s Head of Digital.

The presentation also included input from Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin, and Killarney Municipal Manager Angela McAllen.

Over 120 people logged on to what was a first of its kind public meeting for the Killarney Municipal District. These included business people, curious locals and representatives from Killarney Cycling Club.

“A webinar is not ideal but it is a very simple and useful way to ensure everyone has their say,” Mr Looney told the meeting. “This is a major project for our

town, it is so important and will add vital infrastructure to the town, adding quality for locals and visitors.”

PLANS AND CONSULTATION

While Mr Doyle gave a very detailed presentation on the four new proposed cycleways in the town, all four officials said that the online meeting was only the first step in gauging the public’s reaction to the plans.

Mr Doyle split his presentation into four parts, one for each of the proposed routes.

It is hoped the four new cycle lanes and associated street furniture, will link with existing cycle lanes in the town, including Muckross Road, which is subject to a separate funding upgrade by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the Flesk Way project, currently under construction, which will link Ross Road with Flesk Bridge.

Sheila is off ventilator but has long road to recovery | By Michelle Crean After a fierce five-week battle with COVID-19, much-loved Killarney woman Sheila Crowley is out of immediate danger and making a slow recovery after being taken off the ventilator last weekend - and is expected to be moved out of the COVID ward within days.

Sheila (60), who lives in Rathmore but is originally from Headford, faces months of recovery after being rushed into ICU at University Hospital Kerry (UHK) critically ill with the deadly virus. Her lungs were "completely full of the virus" according to her family who prayed with at least one hundred others every single day while she fought for her life.

Currently Sheila is on high flow oxygen and only days ago still tested positive for the virus - but is expected to be moved

out to a regular ward as soon as she tests negative. However, although in good form, her family says they have no idea how long her recovery will take.

"She is in an isolation room in the COVID ward as she's still testing positive," her niece Ashley Crowley told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday). "At least she's out of major danger. We think she'll be moved out to another ward within days once she tests negative but there's a very long road ahead."

In January her family spoke to the Killarney Advertiser to highlight just how dangerous the virus is - saying they are still "completely baffled" as to how and where she contracted it.

Their prayers for her recovery were answered however, as Sheila was taken off the ventilator last Saturday.

"Her mobility and speech have been affected. We can't speak to her on the mobile but we write letters every day and

drop them into her once a week. Sheila is always on our minds. She's smiling all the time and in great form. The main thing is she is doing OK." Ashley added that they've missed her dreadfully as they usually see her every day. However, she also added that she's grateful for all the prayers and messages they have received since Sheila became ill. "We have a 12 hour rosary circle where one hundred people continuously pray. We've been doing that every day. The amount of people praying has been unreal and we just can't thank them enough."

The necessary arrangements are in place at UHK to upscale Critical Care capacity should that become necessary.

“The hospital remains very busy caring for both COVID and non-COVID patients and the demand for hospital bed capacity including Critical Care is high," the HSE said in a statement this week.

"Critical Care Capacity in the South/ South West Hospital Group (S/SWHG) is actively managed as a group resource; thereby ensuring patients always have access to the best possible care setting with inter-hospital transfer as required. Management at University Hospital Kerry is appealing to all members of the public to follow the most recent Government COVID-19 guidelines to help stop the spread.”

"Great optimism" as new town businesses open | By Sean Moriarty Killarney’s reputation as a forward thinking town continues despite the world being in the middle of a pandemic.

Major town school works almost complete One local school could see major new works completed by mid-March as the building - deemed essential by the Dept of Education during the current restrictions - nears completion. | By Michelle Crean The brand new, and much needed extension at The Monastery primary school on New Road, will include two new classrooms to cater for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and children with two and more diagnosed learning difficulties, multi-sensory rooms, as well as works to extend the school hall, which is currently too small for the 190 pupil school.

There are also plans for a new school stage and PA system in the hall.

And, according to principal of the school, Colm Ó Súilleabháin, works for a soft play area outside and colourful murals should be finished during the summer holidays.

The school was founded in 1838 and has been located on the site on New Road since 1958. A three classroom extension was added at the rear in 2015 to cater for growing numbers.

Late last year the school ran ‘THE MONster Giveaway' asking the public to make ‘a small donation for the next generation’ to help cater for the growing school population.

And, although they initially thought they'd raise somewhere in the region of €20,000 - Colm says they were blown

away by the €40,000 raised.

"We're hoping to have the interior finished by mid-March, which is six weeks away," Colm told the Killarney Advertiser.

"We're waiting on funding from the Dept for additional works, and some additional works might have to wait for the [summer] holidays. The response to the fundraiser was phenomenal. I thought we'd get €20,000 but it's now close to €40,000. It gave us all a great lift. We want to thank everyone for supporting our fundraiser, businesses who sponsored fantastic prizes and all the community groups who made donations and everyone who bought tickets."

He also added it's great news that those attending the school for special education would be returning on February 11 after Minister for Education Norma Foley and education bodies agreed the date on Monday adding that "there was a lot of pressure" for the decision makers given "the situation".

"Two weeks ago we were disappointed it didn't happen. We've two special classes and we'll be delighted to have them back.

There's 11 in total, and two teachers and two SNAs. There won't be more than 20 people in the school."

Several new businesses, many of whom will thrive even further when tourists return, have opened in the town centre since the start of the year. More are preparing to open and others have changed hands to ensure they will continue to serve the people of Killarney and visitors in years to come.

The biggest new name on Killarney streets is Lana, a nationwide chain of Asian street food restaurants and takeaways.

A new outlet which is set to open this week on College St will be the 15th in Lana’s ever expanding national chain.

Killarney is set to get a new family restaurant very soon too with the opening of 'Shake, Waffle, and Roll' in the early spring.

Hugga Mugga is a new café recently added to College St since Christmas and another café is expected to replace Gloria Jeans on New St.

Another new addition to the streets of Killarney in recent days is a coffee shop called Bean in Killarney, a sister operation to Bean in Dingle which has been trading for nearly six years.

The Crêpe House Killarney in Old Market Lane opened before this third lockdown but they are doing very well with a takeaway service.

“There is great optimism for the future,” Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce president Niall Kelleher told the Killarney Advertiser.

“There is great confidence in the market when people are allowed trade. Let us be clear, people are closed because of a worldwide pandemic, but Killarney has a great offering and when we can open again, people are going to want to come to Killarney. So there is a lot of confidence there.”

Meanwhile, Mac’s of Main St has changed hands ensuring the popular eatery will continue to serve the people of Killarney and its visitors for years to come.

The new proprietors are planning a large-scale refurbishment before reopening.

New tourism strategy on the cards for Kerry | By Michelle Crean A new marketing and communications agency - with a Kerry woman at the helm - has been appointed to develop tourism in Kerry following the devastating impact of COVID-19 on the industry.

Kerry Tourism Industry Federation (KTIF) this week announced, that O'Connell Marketing, founded by Jean O'Connell from Currow, has won the contract after a competitive tendering process.

The O'Connell Marketing team will, in conjunction with the KTIF marketing group and oversight from the KTIF board and Kerry County Council, strategically develop and implement an integrated marketing and communications plan for 'Discover Kerry', the consumer-facing brand for county Kerry.

The agency specialises in working with different tourism, hospitality and destination brands with a focus on both the domestic and international markets. Jean and her team have offices in Wexford and Kerry but work remotely across Ireland and further afield on a variety of projects.

The creative team are diverse with expertise in brand development, consumer and industry engagement, strategic mar-

keting and digital communications.

“We are thrilled to have won the marketing and communications contract for ‘Discover Kerry’," Jean said. "Kerry is my home county, and I love spending time at home with my family rediscovering the stunning scenic landscapes and the variety of tourism businesses Kerry has to offer. I am very aware of the devastating impact COVID-19 continues to have on the industry and my team and I look forward to working with all stakeholders involved in 'Discover Kerry' to boost county Kerry's tourism recovery."

Former St Brigid’s student named as one of Trinity’s best | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney student has been named as one of only 10 Kerry people in the Entrance Exhibition Awards from Trinity College.

The awards go to students accepted into the first year of a full-time undergraduate degree programme who achieves the highest points among Trinity entrants from their secondary school, above a minimum of 500 CAO points.

Leaving Certificate at St Brigid’s Secondary School last June was the only Killarney student on the list of award winners.

"We congratulate each student and wish them well in their studies,” said Trinity Provost, Dr Patrick Prendergast.

Of the 2020 new entrants to Trinity, 527 students qualified for an award, up from 452 in 2019. The students come from a record 455 different schools, 438 schools on the island of Ireland (up from 403 in 2019) and 17 schools from overseas.

Greywind to launch new single

It's been tough for everyone this past year - especially musicians who have bourne the brunt with cancelled gigs and tours - however, one local band are ready to release new music. | By Michelle Crean Brother sister duo Steph and Paul O'Sullivan from Ballydribbeen, who make up the band 'Greywind', will launch their latest track 'Am I Asleep?' on Friday, February 19.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, Paul said that they are very excited as it's been a tough year for the music industry.

"We're insanely excited," Paul said.

"It's been a busy start to the New Year. It feels now like a fresh start."

The single was recorded early last year just before the pandemic kicked in with grammy nominated producer Romesh Dodangoda who has worked with British rock band 'Bring me the Horizon' who have just had a number one album on the Official Albums Chart in Ireland with their latest EP 'Post Human: Survival Horror'.

When restrictions lessened late last year the duo travelled to England where they recorded the video for their new single.

"We shot the video in London. We're so proud of this song and so excited for people to hear it."

Greywind's album ‘Afterthought’ reached 2m streams on global music

platform Spotify which was featured in the Killarney Advertiser at the time, and Paul said that they have "locked in tour dates for later this year" but whether they go ahead "all depends on the restrictions at the time".

Tomorrow (Saturday) marks a very special date in one household in Knocknahoe - as they reach their milestone 50 year wedding anniversary. | By Michelle Crean And while parties and a larger family gathering may be off the table for now for obvious COVID reasons, that won't stop Séamus and Noreen Doherty from spending some quality time together and reminiscing about their special day in 1971.

At the time Séamus worked at the Great Southern Hotel while Noreen, originally from from Rathmore, was just a stone's throw away working with the railway.

After courting for some time they set the date and married in St. Joseph's Church in Rathmore on February 6, 1971 by Canon Fr Tom Looney, a first cousin of Séamus.

The happy couple went on to have five children Dónal, Bríd, Mary, Norma and Marguerite and have seven grandchildren, Lauren, Darragh, Kianan, Aoibhe, Eric, Mark, and Mardia.

Last week, the Killarney Advertiser revealed that up 25 people at the Atlas House Direct Provision Centre on Park Road, were infected by COVID-19.

Currently the vaccination rollout follows a specific sequence, it has commenced with residents and staff in residential care settings for older people and frontline healthcare workers.

It then moves to community settings and will be rolled out on an age-related basis throughout the country, with the support of GPs and pharmacists.

However, there is no provision to include residents of Direct Provision Centres and asylum seekers the opportunity to be vaccinated despite living in high-risk environments.

Cllr Michael Gleeson wrote to the HSE seeking clarity on the matter. He said he was disappointed with the response.

Since the HSE started vaccinating residential centres in the first week of January, they have vaccinated over 11,000 people in Cork and Kerry at well over one hundred centres.

“I am sure you will agree it is a testament to our local clinical staff who are normally employed in other areas and who willingly turn their attention to this task while we are experiencing a significant wave of COVID-19 positive cases across the community and in these centres, throughout this exercise,” added the HSE statement.

As it stands, only those within 5km of the upland region should be visiting the area, but the warnings apply once restrictions are lifted too.

Concerns have been raised about the disposal of organic waste on the mountains.

Items like banana skins and apple cores are mistakenly considered biodegradable by walkers and are left on the mountainside.

“We would ask you to bring all your rubbish, including organic waste such as banana skins, apple cores, orange peels and tea bags home with you after a visit. Why? Because organic waste has a real impact on the ecology of sensitive upland environments,” said Sarah Lewis, a Conservation Officer with the John Muir Trust. “Bananas have potassium in their skins which can change the soil composition. They have a hard time biodegrading in rocky and cold upland environments and can take up to two years to fully decompose. Native birds can be displaced as scavengers are drawn to the rubbish.”

Yesterday (Thursday) the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle (ROKCC) organising committee announced its decision to cancel this year’s 2021 event due to the uncertainty surrounding public health guidelines this summer.

The annual event, one of Ireland’s largest charity cycling events, traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in July - but was cancelled last year as a result of the pandemic.

Following internal meetings and consultations, the organising committee felt it was best to cancel this year’s event.

ROKCC Committee Chairman Garry Galvin said the decision had been made following a review of the current public health guidelines.

“Due to the continued uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 public health position together with both Government and the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) guidelines and recommendations, the organising committee of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle have decided to cancel the traditional ROKCC cycle due to be held on Saturday July 3 2021," he said.

“Following on from the cancellation of the 2020 event and the cancellation of the 2021 event we are very conscious of the financial impact this is having on our charity partners and we hope to mitigate that loss in income by holding a virtual fundraising cycle in line with public health guidelines. This is currently in the planning stage and we will make further announcements in due course and hope

that it will be well supported for the benefit of our charity partners. We would also like to say a sincere “Thank You” to our many cyclists that donated their 2020 registration fee, merchandise and online donations to charity as we were able to distribute over €30,000 to our beneficiary charities in December 2020. The charities that benefited were Ard Chúram Day Care Centre, Listowel, Banna Rescue, Breakthrough Cancer Research, Cúnamh Iveragh, Down Syndrome Ireland (Kerry branch), and St Francis Special School."

Over the course of the cycle races’ 37year history, the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle has raised almost €17 million for more than 160 charities.

"In more recent years, over €1 million has been raised per annum. The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle Committee look forward to welcoming all participants to Kerry for the 2022 event and we want to thank all current registrants, volunteers and charities for their generous ongoing support.

We will be issuing further notifications in due course with regard to the virtual fundraising event,” he added.

Gardai continue to adapt to the needs of the community As an organisation, the Gardai have tried their best to adapt to the needs of community in Killarney during the COVID pandemic - and as it continues on they are there for those who need assistance.

This week Editor Michelle Crean asked local Community Garda Deirdre Quinn from Killarney Garda Station how they're adapting given increased demands from the public such as helping with shopping and prescriptions, and new laws regarding checkpoints and 5km restrictions as the pandemic continues.

"In addition to the usual service readers expect from us, I believe one of the most significant contributions we have made since COVID-19, is the Kerry Community Response Forum, which is a free multi-agency service between the HSE, Kerry County Council and An Garda Síochána, that provides essential support to people

who need it," Garda Quinn explained.

"I have had the most hilarious responses from the public! Mostly very strange looks and comments from people who see me in full uniform doing the shopping or pharmacy calls, thinking it is for myself!"

At Christmas she even had a few extra calls from grandparents who wanted to get gifts and cards for their grandchildren and loved ones, but were unable to do it themselves, or to get someone to do it for them.

"It was so rewarding to be able to do this, because it really meant so much them. I also do a lot of call-backs to people who

"Most recently, we just received much needed essential food packages from the Irish Red Cross, for distribution to people who are struggling financially during the pandemic. I have been working with incredible local groups, who will ensure these essential food packages get to the people who need them the most."

And Deirdre wanted to share some important crime prevention advice, as Gardai have noticed a sharp increase in telephone and online scams.

"Never share personal or financial information online or over the phone. If you are in any doubt, ask someone you trust or ring your local Garda station and they will be only too happy to give you sound advice about it," she said.

Dangerous Beaufort road to be made safe | By Michelle Crean One of the busiest country roads in the Killarney area which is currently in a "shocking and dangerous condition" is set to get a huge facelift making it safer for road users.

The Board Of Works Road, Beaufort, has been allocated €73,000 by Irish Water towards the works following representations by Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill on behalf of the residents.

Cllr Cahill had organised a deputation in regard to the condition of the Board Of Works Road almost two years ago. He stated at a recent Kerry County Council meeting that "the total lack of action over the past two years is grossly unfair to all residents and road users".

He also received a commitment at the

meeting from Padraic Teahan, Senior Roads Engineer with Kerry County Council that the Local Authority will provide additional funding towards the works.

"Finally funds are forthcoming from Irish Water towards the reinstatement of this road which is in a shocking and dangerous condition following the carrying out of pipe laying works there and I welcome that,” he said.

“This has been allowed stand for far too long on this, the busiest of our county roads. The laying of new water pipes is essential work, but the reinstatement of roads must also receive similar urgency.”

The road caters for locals and tourists alike going to Carrauntoohil and the Gap of Dunloe and is also a commuter route between Killarney and Waterville/ Cahersiveen/Glencar/Dromid and Beaufort.

"They deserve a safe standard,” he added.

“I trust that the ongoing urgent requirement of the laying of water pipes throughout the Municipal District will be conducted in a professional manner and that all roads and facilities will be reinstated promptly."

The Council replied saying that Irish Water has this month allocated €73,000 for reinstatement work on the Board Of Works Road.

"The Council’s WSs and Roads/Operations Offices are currently in discussion on how best to do the job.

The major programme of water mains replacement in the greater Beaufort area, carried out by Kerry County Council on Irish Water’s behalf, over the last six years has resulted in a great improvement in this essential service both locally and over the greater mid-Kerry area.

In recent years, a total of 1.4km of the 300mm diameter trunk water main has been replaced on the Board Of Works road from Kissane’s Shop towards the crossroads near the Gap of Dunloe. Of this 1.4km, 500m was fully permanently restored as part of a Kerry County Council full-width road surfacing job.

A further 900m was temporarily restored over the 1m width of the pipe-laying trench. Because the newly laid pipe and the old pipe are on opposite sides of the road, and this is a relatively large water main, then there is damage to both sides at the locations where ‘bursts’ have happened in recent years.

Some temporary restoration was done in 2017, but further permanent works are very necessary. The recent funding announcement is most welcome in permitting this work to be now carried out."

Four-part cycle plan unveiled The ambitious cycle plans announced by the Council online on Wednesday evening are revealed below..... cont'd from P6 | By Sean Moriarty The Council said that over 12,000 people live within a 10 minute cycle of Killarney town centre and that this plan is as much about reducing town centre traffic as it is about healthy living.

“We want to promote active travel, health, the environment and fitness,” Mr Doyle told the meeting. “We want to expand the cycle lanes and include access to the schools.”

ROCK ROAD

It is proposed to build two cycle lanes, one at each side of the road, linking Cleeney Roundabout with the Rock Rd/ New Rd/St Anne’s Rd/High St junction.

The plan would be to build a cycle lane beside existing footpaths, narrow the road traffic lanes and build kerbing to protect the cyclist.

Cyclists would have right of way at each road crossing junction so additional street furniture and signage is required to make this safe.

“This project aims to increase the allocation of road space for all road users,” Mr Doyle told the meeting. “That means the width of carriageways will be reduced.”

Concerns were voiced over how cyclists would be accommodated once they reach each end of the Rock Road cycle way, with concerns raised over forcing cyclists onto the Cleeney Roundabout and the entrance to the top of High St. Mr Doyle said both issues are being dealt with separately – the Cleeney Roundabout is included in the Bypass traffic plan – as revealed in the Killarney Advertiser two weeks ago – while cyclist access to

High St is being discussed as part of the public realm plan which is also under current consideration by the Council.

LEWIS RD

The Lewis Road plan will be slightly different in the sense that it will have a two-way cycle path on just one side of the road.

The dual cycleway is proposed on the Fitzgerald Stadium side of Lewis Road and could involve stepping back the entrance gate to the famous stadium and the relocation of boundary walls outside private residencies on the road.

PARK ROAD

The construction of cycleways on the Park Road is likely to be the most challenging on the four projects that are on the table.

It is not possible to run a cycle lane, eastbound from the Friary, because of the overhead railway bridge. However, town-bound cyclists could be diverted on a new path which will be constructed towards the rear of the new cinema.

Another new cycleway will be constructed inside the treeline at the front of the Ardshanavooly Estate.

Further challenges are expected at the roundabout that serves as the entrance to the Deerpark Shopping Centre and Pinewood Estate.

Plans are being considered to force cyclists (depending on direction of travel) on to Countess Road or Arbutus Drive and the creation of new traffic controls to allow cyclists continue on their way uninterrupted.

“Park Road is the main artery in and out

of town,” said Doyle, acknowledging that this section of the cycle route is going to be the most difficult to deliver.

The plan will require new protection bollards on the upper section of the street, the road is too narrow there to allow sufficient protection between car traffic and cycle lanes.

DEERPARK

The new cycleway will continue from Park Road, along Arbutus Drive to serve the shopping centre, the Gael Scoil and the entrance to Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. Additional cycle paths will be constructed to allow residents of Pinewood Estate join the full network, once completed.

NEXT STEP

“Like Denmark, the Netherlands, and

Sweden,” said one online contributor, whose identity was not revealed due to data protection rules, “Killarney is going to be world class.”

While February 17 is the deadline for submissions and observations, the next phases depend on planning permission and funding and each go hand in hand.

Funding won’t be made available until planning permission is granted and the level of construction will depend on the funding that is released.

Episode three of the Killarney Park lockdown video out today | By Sean Moriarty Killarney hotelier Marcus Treacy will release his latest lockdown video today (Friday).

It will be the third instalment in the Killarney Park Hotel’s “Still Closed But Still Having Fun”, series that will now feature a new episode every month until hotels can safely reopen.

Marcus has starred in two promotional videos that have become online hits due to his tongue-in-cheek approach.

Last spring, during the first lockdown, he was recorded cycling around the empty hotel.

Another video, released since Christ-

mas, shows him jumping on the hotels beds, and trying to play chess – against himself – in the hotel’s lobby.

“Essentially, we are just trying to have fun in these bleak times,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

His videos are two-fold; they are a great way of highlighting the facilities at his hotel, but they also show the challenges facing hoteliers. The solo chess game is the perfect metaphor for the 40 or so empty hotels in Killarney right now.

“We wanted to do something that kept our relationships with our customers and our team,” added The Killarney Park’s General Manager Niamh O’Shea.

Citizenship ceremonies on hold | By Sean Moriarty For three years it was one of the biggest occasions in Killarney but like everything else the annual citizenship ceremonies will not take place this year.

On Monday March 2 last year, over 5,000 people become Irish citizens at special ceremonies that took place at the INEC. It was one of the last major events in Killarney before COVID-19 restrictions came into place 10 days later.

This year, as a result of crowd gathering rules, the Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee, has announced that a temporary system is in place that will enable citizenship applicants to complete their

naturalisation process by signing a statutory declaration of loyalty to the State.

“This signed statutory declaration replaces the requirement for citizenship applicants to attend citizenship ceremonies, which have been temporarily suspended during COVID-19,” she said.

Since 2011, 151 such ceremonies have been held and 132,000 people from 180 countries have become citizens.

Killarney has hosted several of these ceremonies since 2018, the first year that they took place outside Dublin, providing a welcome pre-tourist season boost to the town.

Last March, a total of six ceremonies, held over two days, saw people from 135 countries declared citizens of the Republic of Ireland in Killarney.

“We need decisions to be made for our mental health” As the decision around whether State exams will go ahead or not as the traditional sit down or calculated grades, this week St Brigid’s Secondary School student Mairead O’Donoghue, explains just how hard it is to prepare for her Leaving Cert while struggling to maintain a balance of school and study life and time away from the books. | By Michelle Crean

MAKE A DECISION: Leaving Cert student Mairead O'Donoghue from St Brigid's says State exam decisions need to be made as soon as possible for students' mental health.

“For the class of 2021, we have not experienced anything close to a “traditional” senior cycle. School online is not what I expected when going into my Leaving Cert year. This year comes with its own disadvantages of exam stress, constant studying, and preparation for exams at the end of the year, never mind all of that on top of living during a global pandemic.

I understand the Department of Education is trying to come up with alternative options on the traditional exam while considering our safety and the safety of our teachers and families. But as students, we need decisions to be made for our mental health as the uncertainty

is increasing levels of stress and anxiety.

Over 60,000 exam students are waiting for a decision to be made while struggling to maintain a balance of school and study life. For me, my mock exams were supposed to take place this Friday (today), a vote was taken by students and teachers in our school on whether or not to facilitate the mock exams when we return to school. The majority of teachers and students voted that the exams would be cancelled. I was relieved as it reduced the pressure I had to put myself under trying to revise old material as well as keep up with the online work given. Even though I was happy with the decision regarding

The Department of Education and Minister for Education Norma Foley are in a dilemma, she explained.

However, she added they need to provide students and teachers with clarity.

5.2.2021 “Nobody would have predicted before Christmas that we would be where we are now, and I find it hard to understand when Norma Foley says she thinks it will be feasible for students to sit a “traditional Leaving Cert”.

We have now spent 14 weeks outside of a traditional classroom setting and that is not including time taken away from students who had to isolate. As a Sixth Year group, we have overcome massive challenges in the past number of months regarding our education.

Since returning to online school after Christmas in my own experience I am finding it more manageable as I have more experience this time around. I have to say I would not be finding it so manageable only due to the support and encouragement given to us by the teachers and staff of St Brigid’s who are constantly trying to improve our experience.

Even though I try to stick to my school timetable attending classes and taking breaks as scheduled, I find myself completely drained at 4pm both mentally and physically, and then have to face into homework and study for the next couple of hours while sitting at the same desk all over again.

The decision we are all hoping to be made during this week or early next week will not satisfy every Leaving Cert student, but it will provide us with the clarity we need to continue working towards exams in June or for predicted grades or alternatives. I hope the Department of Education and the Minister for Education consider the stress and anxiety levels students are experiencing when making their decision on the future of our education as well as our, and our loved ones, health."

Grants available to smaller tourism business operators | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce is calling on the wider business community to apply for a new Fáilte Ireland Tourism Business Continuity Scheme grant that has just been made available.

The State tourism promotion agency will make €55 million available to businesses that have not been supported previously by schemes like the 'Covid Restrictions Support Scheme'.

The new scheme is aimed at the smaller operator like B&B owners, jarveys, boat tour operators and many more who are not represented by national bodies.

“We will be helping all our members with this,” Chamber president Niall Kelleher told the Killarney Advertiser. “This is open to businesses in Killarney and the entire county.”

The chamber’s executive discussed the

new grant at yesterday’s (Thursday’s) online executive meeting.

The scheme, called the Tourism Business Continuity Scheme, will be launched on February 11.

“This has been the most challenging year tourism has ever faced. The sector’s revenue has declined by a massive €6 billion and tens of thousands of jobs have been lost,” said Fáilte Ireland CEO Paul Kelly.

“This will provide those tourism businesses who have not received support through the Covid Restrictions Support Scheme (CRSS) or previous Fáilte Ireland business continuity schemes, with direct financial assistance.”

Mayor Brendan Cronin encouraged all businesses to apply for the grant and that business owners should contact any elected councillor if they were having difficulty with the application process.

“Businesses are on their knees so let’s grab this with both hands,” Mayor Cronin told the Killarney Advertiser.

Please Minister..... give them an answer | By Michelle Crean, Editor The pressure is certainly pilling up - not only for students but also teachers and parents, and the one question on everyone's lips is "Why aren't you listening Minister?"

With just four months to the exams; stress and mental health is a big concern for teenagers who, to date, still have no idea whether the State exams are actually going to go ahead this year.

It's now February and by now at the very least, the Minister for Education, the Dept of Education and all the stakeholders involved should have a 'Plan B' set out as a contingency; and they should be letting the students know immediately.

No one is saying that the answer is going to be easy as there's too many questions such as whether COVID numbers at the time will mean it's safe for students. As one expert said yesterday (Thursday) "schools are only as safe as the community around them".

For the most part, students have gone above and beyond working towards the traditional Leaving and Junior Cert exams - but, as has been outlined by the many students we've featured over the past five weeks, this school year is anything but "traditional".

The Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) this week stated that their preference is to have papers modified for this summer's exams - should they go ahead - and that certain areas of the curriculum should be omitted to reflect the work missed before and after Christmas.

But yet again even though there was an announcement expected this week, there was not even a whiff of an answer - leaving everyone concerned just as confused as before.

Please Minister, let the students know what's happening - without delay.

Killarney man elected to the biggest GAA job in Britain Killarney man Noel O’Sullivan has been elected as the chair of the GAA’s Provincial Council of Britain. | By Sean Moriarty The association represents the county boards of Scotland, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Warwickshire, Hertfordshire, Gloucestershire and London. There are a total 82 clubs affiliated to Provincial Council of Britain.

“It is a huge honour for me and a huge honour for my family,” Mr O’Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser. “This is the highest position that can be reached in the GAA in Britain. I want to thank the seven county boards who put their trust in me.”

O’Sullivan hopes to undertake two major projects in his three-year leadership term.

He wants each county board in the UK to have its own county grounds and he wants to develop the underage structure as the sport moves away from an emigrant sport and becomes more reliant on home-grown players.

“I want see the clubs become self-sufficient with their own county grounds,” he added. “The role in that sense is more about developments than fundraising. I want to see more underage work done too as we move away from immigration.”

GUIDANCE

O’Sullivan from Ballaugh on the Mallow Road, has dedicated his life to London and British GAA. He previously served as the chairman of the London County Board between 2011 and 2015 which was one of the most progressive periods in London GAA. In that time he spearheaded fundraising efforts to build new grandstands at the county grounds in Ruislip – the total redevelopment cost over £4.3 million.

Other achievements include the affiliation of the Irish Guards – a club made up entirely of members of the British Army – as a junior football team in the London County Championship.

It was also one of the most successful periods in London GAA history. The County footballers qualified for the 2013 Connaught final against Mayo and enjoyed their first only All-Ireland qualifiers (back door) campaign.

A year earlier the county’s hurling team won the Christy Ring All-Ireland Hurling title for second rate teams and this earned them the right to play for the Liam McCarthy Cup which they did for two seasons before being relegated again.

Flying the Kerry flag in Britain Noel O’Sullivan flies many flags but they are all rooted in the Green and Gold of Kerry.

He is a long-time member of St Kiernan’s GAA Club in London, a club with strong Kerry ties. Club chairman is Beaufort native Jerome O’Shea.

Noel’s GAA involvement stretches across several other areas including

chairman of the All Britain Championship.

He is also a former chairman of the Kerry Association London and served as that club’s Kerry-London Person of the Year in 2011. He is one of the longest serving members of the London Killarney Reunion.

Mr O’Sullivan is the chairman of the London Rose of Tralee Centre as well.

Volunteer groups still active during current lockdown | By Sean Moriarty Legion GAA Club is reminding the wider community that their volunteer network is still active and they are willing to help people during lockdown.

The network was launched last spring in response to Kerry County Council’s Public Participation Network’s (PPN) appeal for community volunteers during the first lockdown.

Over 30 members of the club made themselves available and last spring and summer they volunteered to do everything from collecting shopping, fixing a broken door and even installing Skype for an elderly family who were not used to operating technology.

However, the club feels that since the start of this year, demand for their service is not as great as last March and April, and they want to remind the wider community that they are still available.

Since Christmas, the service has only been used a few times compared to last year.

“Everything is done under the strictest confidence,” club secretary and group co-ordinator Lara O’Brien told the Killarney Advertiser. “Most jobs are completed in 30 minutes, nobody knows what is going on except me and the person I assign to do a job. Only last week one of the doctor’s surgeries in town needed a prescription delivered and we got it done.”

Post-pandemic airport funding | By Sean Moriarty The future of Kerry Airport has been given a boost after the Government confirmed that it is one of three regional airports in the country in line for as share of €21.3 million in funding.

The funding is part one of a five-year funding plan under the newly announced Regional Airports Programme.

Kerry Airport will share €21.3 million with Donegal Airport and Ireland West,

(Knock) airports.

The programme provides a framework for supporting airports that deliver international connectivity to their regions.

“The aviation industry and in particular airports have been acutely impacted by COVID-19. Government has recognised this and is committed to supporting airports while passenger numbers remain low and activity is suppressed. This new programme will greatly assist in maintaining connectivity in our regional airports,” said Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton TD.

What to sow where and when this spring Longer evenings, brighter mornings, cheerful birdsong… spring is here! What does that mean for every gardener?

Seeds! Indeed, now is the time for sowing in order to have that bounty of fresh veg we all enjoy. There is so much choice available these days, how and what to choose? Old reliables are just that, reliable, but many new varieties are disease resistant and often, tastier.

There are lots of varieties available for special places, such as short, bushy tomatoes for pots, like ‘Totem', or cherry tomatoes for hanging baskets including ‘Tumbler'. I love all the cut and ready salad leaves, as well as the oriental and spicy mixed leaves. There are some lovely Romanesco cauliflower available and the range of peas is enormous.

It is certainly worth experimenting, and keeping notes. I always try to sow veggies which are not readily available, such as kohlrabi, heritage tomatoes, purple sprouts and asparagus peas.

So, what to sow where, and when?

In the glasshouse or tunnel, you can start sowing all herbs, shallots, celery and onions. If you have heated beds, lettuce, salads, beans and peas can be started off. Plenty of seeds can be started off indoors, either on the windowsill in a tray, or in propagators, if you want to be a month ahead. Even if you don’t have a garden but would still like to grow your own salad veg, larger propagators, called growhouses are ideal.

If sowing directly into the open ground, March is the month for you. However, most preparatory work can be undertaken now. Beds can be dug over and compost, chicken pellets, Growmore or old manure incorporated. Rake to a fine tilth and cover with some old cardboard to keep the heat in and the weeds off. If space permits, putting up a polytunnel is a great idea. It will allow you to work and grow without the weather affecting you or the crop.

Seed potatoes are also arriving, the earlies such as Homeguard and Sharpes Express can be chitted now. Chitting is a way of starting off potatoes while the soil is still too cold. Just place your seed potatoes in egg trays and allow to sprout. Soil temperatures should be at least eight degrees for potato planting.

A soil thermometer is another handy gadget to have! If there are late frosts, it is wise to take precautions and cover seedlings with horticultural Fleece Or; large pieces of bubble wrap. When using fleece, whether in a glasshouse or outside, remember to tuck the edges in so cold air cannot enter, and heat from the ground is kept in. Fleece can be used for a range of things, not least protecting rhododendron and camellia flower buds!

Press photographers to create a visual COVID record To mark the profound and tragic events shaped by COVID-19, members of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland (PPAI) are planning to form a historic visual record of Ireland during the past unprecedented year.

The collection, which will be shortlisted by the judging panel, will go on display online as well as being offered to the National Archives and National Library System. This stark collection of historic images will pay homage to those who have sadly lost their lives, those working tirelessly on the frontline and all effected by the pandemic.

“It has been an extraordinary past 12 months in the country’s history, during which the members of the PPAI have served their vital role in producing a visual record of the pandemic, which will be preserved in the nation’s archives," Crispin Rodwell, President of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland, said.

"But while COVID-19 has touched every corner of the country and every aspect of Irish society, life goes on and the work and professionalism of our press photographers continues. Our awards recognise and reward the very best press photography from a truly momentous year and this collection of images will stand as a memorial to those that lost their lives and to those that saved many more."

Every day is feeling a bit like groundhog dog lately as the pandemic rumbles on.....but for those living in Pennsylvania - they've a real live groundhog - who predicts the weather!

AWARDS The 43rd annual ‘Press Photographer of the Year Awards’ - the annual awards of the PPAI - are to be broadcast live online on February 26 at 7pm via www.ppai.ie/ livestreamin, presented by broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan.

The virtual awards will feature recorded messages from a host of popular Irish figures and stars highlighting the importance of press photography in journalism and, indeed, our society as a vital visual tool in news, views and informa-

tion sharing.

This year has seen an increase in award entries, with 109 photographers entering over 2,000 images across the nine award categories. Judging for the awards, which generally takes place in Dublin in January, was deliberated online led by chair of the judging panel, former Irish Times picture editor, Frank Miller, alongside judges Eddie Keogh, international photographer and Edmond Terakopian, international photographer and multimedia category judges Philip Bromwell, Broadcaster and Michael Lee, former RTÉ cameraman.

This is the 135th year that locals use a live groundhog to predict how long more winter is going to last.

Usually locals congregate at Gobbler's Knob, a small hill just outside of the town where, since 1887, the annual prediction is made every February 2 - but, like everything, it was moved online this year due to COVID. However, 'Punxsutawney Phil', Pennsylvania's most famous groundhog, was there with a handful of officials.

Legend has it that if 'Phil' sees his shadow then winter will continue for another six weeks but if he doesn't see his shadow spring will come early.

Dating back to 1887, Phil has predicted six more weeks of winter more than one hundred times making this year's prognostication a return to normal after last year's prediction of an early spring.

Watch your back Mr Trump Former US President Donald Trump continues to break records - even after he has left office.

Next Tuesday he will go on trial accused of incitement of insurrection in Washington last month.

He enters the record books as the first president to face impeachment twice.

The chances of Trump being found guilty are slim.

It would need 17 of the 50 Republican Party members who remain in Congress to vote against Trump.

Most Republican senators are against conviction. While few defend his actions, many argue that Congress does not have the power to impeach a former president.

The United States has settled down in the last few weeks since Joe Biden’s inauguration and there are also concerns that a

conviction would lead to even more violence.

However, and here is the clincher, if Trump is found guilty one of his likely punishments is that he will not be allowed run for President in the 2024 election.

And many of the 50 Republicans in Congress will have designs on entering the Presidential race and convicting Trump would be a very easy way of eliminating their main rival.

Illegal dog breeding exposed in Offaly

Winners announced in 'Jim Sheridan Short Film Competition' Multi-Oscar nominee, Jim Sheridan, together with filmmaker, Zahara Moufid, have announced the winners in this years ‘Jim Sheridan International Short Film Competition’.

The inaugural competition was open to filmmakers across the globe who were invited to submit up to a 20-minute, original short film.

“There were almost four hundred films entered into the competition which is phenomenal," Zahara Moufid said. "Initially, a long list of 50 films were selected by our partners at the Waterford Film Festival jury. The second-round selection involved Jim Sheridan and I selecting 20 films from the long list which in turn led to our final selection. We were absolutely blown away by the talent displayed and want to sincerely thank everyone for their submissions.”

The ‘Best Short Film’ was 'The Present', directed by Farah Nabulshi and produced

by Ossama Bawardi and Farah Nabulshi.

The film shows how Palestinians suffer every day due to Israeli occupation and

sheds light on how Palestinian people are deprived of the basic right to freedom of movement. The film follows a father and his young daughter as they attempt to run their daily errands and purchase a present for the man’s wife.

"The film is powerful, thought provoking and highly emotive," Jim Sheridan said.

"I’m not surprised 'The Present' has qualified for the 2021 Oscars, it’s fantastic."

The runner-up for 'Best Short Film' went to 'Lady on the Hill'.

The 'Best Student/Debut Film' went to 'Birthday Girl'.

First Special Mention for 'Debut/Short Film' went to '1 Billion'. Second Special Mention for 'Best Short Film' was 'Mare Nostrum'. Third Special Mention was 'A White Horse'. In the Highly Commended category laureates went to 'Innocent Boy'. Also Highly Commended were 'Cillín', 'A Better You', and 'A Reasonable Effort'.

The overall 'Short Film Competition' winner will enjoy a one-on-one virtual mentoring session with Jim Sheridan and will automatically qualify to screen their work at the Waterford Film Festival in 2021.

As a result of information received by the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA), a joint operation involving the ISPCA and Offaly County Council was recently conducted and led to the discovery of an illegal dog breeding establishment operating without a licence.

A total of 44 breeding females and nine male dogs were found on the premises as well as six litters of pups. In addition to not being registered, the conditions on the property fell below the standards required under the Dog Breeding Establishments Act (DBEA) and its associated guidelines.

62 dogs and puppies were surrendered by the operator and taken into the care of Offaly County Council and the ISPCA where they are being fully assessed. Offaly County Council subsequently served a closure notice on the operator.

Over €1m worth of drugs seized Gardaí in Tallaght have seized drugs with an estimated value of €1.1m along with a number of imitation firearms during an operation in south west Dublin on Tuesday.

As part of ongoing investigations led by the District Detective Unit in Tallaght, an operation was carried out at a storage facility in the City West area where 27 storage containers were searched under warrant. During the course of the searches Gardaí recovered quantities of controlled drugs comprising of; suspected cannabis herb – valued at approximately €452,100, suspected Crack Cocaine – valued at approximately €542,500, and suspected cocaine – valued at approxi-

This free, confidential and befriending service, led by trained volunteers who make weekly phone calls to those ser-

“This service offers an opportunity to increase the social network of our service users, reduce loneliness, share worries or concerns and increase a sense of community among people with sight

Sadness at the passing of Killarney and District Motor Club founder Pat passed away peacefully at his Tiernaboul home, surrounded by his loving family and in the wonderful care of the Palliative Care Home team on Thursday last (January 28).

He was one of a group of mid-Kerry and Killarney motorsport enthusiasts who formed Killarney and District Motor Club in 1977.

He went on to serve as the club’s first joint treasurer and acted as Clerk of the Course for one of the club’s early navigational rallies.

“There was a cohort from the mid-Kerry region that were involved in the club from the very start. Pat was central to that group,” said fellow founder Mike Marshall. “He was a very quiet and gentle man, he was never one to speak out in meetings but he was all for driving the new club forward.”

SciFest calls for entries from Kerry for the 2021 competition Students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) are invited to enter Ireland’s most inclusive second level STEM fair programme.

The 16th annual SciFest competition will again be online and Kerry students are encouraged to enter. The deadline for receipt of entry forms is March 23.

SciFest aims to give students of all abilities and backgrounds the opportunity to develop, research, problem solve, think critically, and make a presentation. Participation in the SciFest programme is free at all levels.

Overall winners from each regional STEM fair will go on to compete at a national final in November 2021. The winner(s) of the SciFest National Final 2021 will be presented with a trophy and will represent Ireland at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2022 in the USA. New Chapter, Same You – Part 2 FINDING YOUR FUEL – MOTIVATION

Motivation has a pertinent role in the field of psychology, as it’s at the very heart of everything that we do. Thankfully, with significant advancements in research and neuroscience (study and structure of the brain and our nervous systems), we now have a sharpened understanding of what fuels, and continuously fuels, our behaviour and motivation to succeed – its breakdown is simple in theory, however not so simple in its application for practice.

The brain, in its complexity, will always aim to seek comfort in conformity. This means that the brain likes familiarity, continuity in structure and regular routine.

However, when we initiate a process for change (i.e. reframe from

eating unhealthy foods), our brain can perceive demands for change, as potential threats to the self and thus, becomes resistant to such processes for change.

Thankfully, like most things in life, there is always another way to respectfully influence change for good. Two such forces that have the significant ability to counteract the brain's resistance to change, are: • Finding your “WHY” – identify your reason and why for change (remember one that is unique to you) • The Powerful Art of Persuasion Let’s take the first, for this week’s discussion…

UNDERSTANDING YOUR MOTIVATION

Motivation can be divided into two broad categories: Intrinsic motivation, meaning internal, and extrinsic motivation, meaning external.

Extrinsic motivation is one that is driven by external reward (i.e. money, fame, career), very much like an “outside in” motivational approach.

Intrinsic motivation, the one that “makes all the difference”, is the one that is controlled by you – an “inside out” approach. This type of motivation is what drives and incentivizes you; it is a process that is aligned with your core values, beliefs and attitudes, all of which make up you as a person and motivate you to act or behave for a higher purpose; a purpose to change or

a purpose to succeed.

When an individual identifies their internal motivators to succeed, they do so with the intention of exploring a pursuit that holds great personal meaning to/for them – a process that “fuels your fire” to achieve.

Humans, by our nature, seek purpose… it fuels everything that we do. Like a car needs diesel or oil to fuel a long-haul journey, human beings on their pursuit for change also need that same fuel to reach any of their destinations seen as worthy for such pursuits.

I’ll just say this… The answer to any of our “hows”, lies at the very heart of our “whys”. Find your “why” and use it purposefully to fuel your way.

Investing requires taking a long-term view After a few years of writing and talking about financial markets, you start to realise that most of what you speak about causes involuntary narcolepsy in roughly 90 percent of people. Ramblings about central bank policies and economic indicators aren't exactly edge of your seat stuff for most sane individuals.

However, every now and then, a crazy event happens that perks the interest of even the most avid market skeptic. Over the past two weeks, one such event occurred. Finance's answer to David vs Goliath, if you will. David, in this case, took the form of Reddit retail traders, who banded together to punish Wall Street speculators for betting against GameStop, a previously unloved video game retailer. GameStop shares surged from $19 at the start of the year to as much as $483 in the process.

The tale begins deep in the online forums as chatter circulates about GameStop's extraordinarily high 'short interest'. This means a large portion of investors had borrowed shares from brokers and sold them in the market with the expectation that the price would fall. This drop in price would allow them to repurchase the shares at the lower price, return them to the broker and then pocket the difference.

Before going any further, let me state for the record that the ill intentions of the short sellers is something that has always irked me, so the recent siege on Wall Street's bottom feeders brought me tremendous joy. However, my overwhelming thought is that this will not end well for most retail traders.

trading volumes in GameStop meant that retail traders could, if enough of them bought into the premise, push the share price higher. This would force the investors who were 'short', to buy GameStop stocks to limit their losses.

Remember, these short-sellers only borrowed the stock, so if the stock price increases, the short seller would have to go to the open market and buy whatever shares are available to close out their position or fill their margin calls. This is how the now infamous 'short squeeze' works.

So, as long as Reddit's band of merry men (and women) could push the stock price high enough to force a 'short squeeze', the huge 'short interest' in the stock would ensure that the 'short squeeze' would push the stock substan-

Like most things in life, there's a catch.

The problem with short squeezing occurs after you have done it. Once you squeeze the shorts dry, how do you get your money out? It's imperative that you are not the one left holding the bag. At the time of writing this, the stock has dropped almost 70 percent in less than 48 hours.

Another important point to recognise is, while a small portion of reasonably unimportant hedge funds crashed, it doesn't mean that all (or even most) large Wall Street firms are losing. In fact, some of them are making a fortune from all this. The high-frequency traders and market makers of the world are having a field day with sky-high volumes, manic volatility and new traders entering the market, traders who pay little attention to spreads, order routing or trading times. This is where these firms make all

their money.

Finally, there is a more sinister element to all this is, that also has me worried for retail traders. Wall Street doesn't always play by the rules. Historically speaking, there has been a recurring theme of big institutions changing the rules of the game if and when they start to lose. We saw this in 2008 as Wall Street attempted to bend the rules at the expense of Michael Burry (the Big Short), and last week this tendency reared its ugly head once again as discount brokers ceased trading on the most heavily shorted stocks, citing the need to 'help traders stay informed'. The same brokers who offer mindless options leverage to anyone and everyone are suddenly troubled by your financial education?

Call me a cynic, but I find it rather coincidental that this overwhelming need for investors to stay fully informed happens just as their biggest customers (hedge funds) are hemorrhaging losses.

I'm not about to sit here and tell you not to get involved; it's your money, you can do what you like with it. What I will say is, please understand that this is trading, not investing and adjust your approach accordingly. Both are valid strategies for making money, but the approach to each needs to be vastly different. Investing requires taking a long-term view, while trades, like short squeezes, burn brightly, then flame out and are more akin to outright gambling.

Insurance implications for properties temporarily vacant during Level 5 During this period of Level 5 restrictions there are many properties, residential and commercial, that are temporarily unoccupied or not trading. Normally unoccupied properties are restricted to fire only cover, in other words cover for events such as burst pipes and storm are not included.

For houses such as holiday homes or let properties, many polices will have winter measures regarding heating and water conditions.

For seasonal holiday homes an example of a policy condition could include the

following: “When the holiday home is unoccupied for over 30 consecutive days, it must be inspected both internally and externally at least once every 14 days thereafter by you or a person authorised by you. Between October 1 and March 31 (inclusive), the water supply must be turned off at the mains and the entire cold water system must be drained down" Or "The holiday home must have a fully operational thermostatically controlled central heating system that is set to maintain a minimum constant temperature of five degrees Celsius or 41 degrees Fahrenheit

throughout the holiday home (including the attic)”.

All insurers will have different wordings so it is advisable to review and discuss your own policy with your broker.

With regard to commercial properties, many insurers have maintained full cover once the business is temporarily not trading due to COVID-19. Each insurer would have their own conditions such as, but not limited to, maintaining the intruder and fire alarm systems and CCTV. It is advisable to clear all external combustible waste and record a log of all inspections to the property. While many insurers would stipulate once weekly, I would

recommend a number of times weekly to inspect inside and outside the building.

Unfortunately, fires will still occur and there have been some large incidents at unoccupied businesses since COVID-19 started. Investing through regular saving accounts In the past year, it appears that everybody is getting involved in the stock market, especially the younger generation.

As we have been in and out of lockdown for almost a year now, people who are lucky enough to be working have less expenditure and therefore, more savings to invest. People have more time to research the market. It is easier than ever to access the market through trading platforms such as DeGiro, Trading 212 and Revolut. At times it would appear that everyone is making easy money. A scroll through TikTok or Instagram would have you questioning why anyone works in a day job anymore, as 16-year-old “investment gurus� share their portfolios showing astonishing returns.

It is great that people are looking to

generate better returns for their hardearned cash but it is worrying that they are willing to throw thousands of euro at highly volatile stocks, on the back of a TikTok tip, having done little or no research. For the majority, the results shared by these investment gurus are not sustainable in the long term.

It would not be wise to risk all of your savings on a specific share, no matter how strong the underlying company or asset may seem. If you want to pick individual stocks you should only invest an amount that you can afford to lose.

If you are looking to save money but also get involved in the stock market, without having to worry about when to

buy and sell specific stocks then there are options available. These will not generate the same returns as many of the TikTok gurus claim they can, but they will generate a steady return, better than what you will get by leaving your money to sit in a savings account in the bank. This is also not a quick fix, so you would need to be investing with a minimum of five years in mind. You can save on a monthly basis, so that X amount is taken each month and invested by an investment manager, on your behalf.

If you want to get some exposure to the stock market then this is a great way to start, without assuming the level of risk that individual stock selection inevitably involves. You will get exposure to various markets, asset classes, companies, industries, geographical locations

etc.

If you enjoy picking your own stocks, I would recommend setting aside a certain percentage of your savings each month to play with the stock market, cryptocurrencies, commodities etc. Put another percentage into a savings and investment plan through a life insurance company and keep the remainder in an online savings account with your bank/Revolut, for holiday funds, emergencies etc.

It is great that people want to make their money work for them, but it is important to just keep in mind anything that seems too good to be true very often is.

It’s been a very busy couple of weeks for CAO applicants in the run up to February 1 - marking the normal closing date for applicants. Students who wish to apply for ‘Restricted Courses’ and who haven’t done so by the February 1 deadline can do so from February 5 at 12 noon up to March 1 at 5.15pm for a fee of €10.

Improved results will be communicated by CAO to the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) who will determine if you would have received an offer if these grades had been in place when CAO offers came out in 2020. If you are deemed eligible for an offer based on your improved results, the HEI will contact you to offer you a deferred place to take up in 2021 and you will be told how to take up this place - you will not be able to access your 2020 CAO account, all communication will come to you directly from HEIs, not CAO.

Psychological benefits of exercise One of the largest, albeit less discussed, benefits of building a healthy lifestyle of fitness and wellness is not just the physical changes, but the psychological benefits.

At first, most are focused on the smaller details: getting up early or adjusting their schedules to allow them time to work out; shopping for healthy foods and removing processed ones from their diets; or simply focusing on getting through each workout in one piece.

Adjusting habits and making a course change towards fitness is a challenge.

Their rewards are more energy, strength, endurance, and positive body composition changes. Most people are familiar with these changes, and at the outset, that knowledge is sufficient for pushing them over the edge to making the time and financial commitment to start the journey.

After a few months though, other benefits start showing up, subtly at first, and much more pronounced as the months turn into years and the years turn into decades.

People start to notice their attitudes are generally better due to the stress relief that regular workouts and a healthy lifestyle provide.

With a better attitude comes an increasing ability to manage stressful situations better, thus helping improve their personal life, family life, and work interactions. With better relationships and decision making at work, they start to get ahead of decisions that might have previously been made hastily due to interference from brain fog, stress, and anxiety, and now many situations begin to be remedied before they even appear.

THE SNOWBALL EFFECT

It’s a snowball effect: the more we focus on our health, the more we grow our capability to deal with life in healthier ways. Our hormones are balanced more, our thoughts are clearer, and our bodies function better, and when life throws us a curveball, we can much more readily take a deep breath, get a few thoughts in before making a decision or saying something we might regret, and take on the challenge more productively.

Burpees, rowing intervals, long tough workouts, not eating that bowl of ice cream, or eating a little more veggies all are conscious decisions where we have to stop, think, and decide we’re going to take the slightly more difficult route, knowing it’s better for us.

As we make these little decisions, this resilience grows slowly, steadily, and the next thing you know, you’re choosing to do the hard, but right thing - taking on a new project at work that might be outside of your comfort zone, opting to learn something new through a bit of struggle, and having those tough conversations with friends or family members you might have avoided in the past.

These changes are some of the most impactful, and they all result from resolving to take small steps in your wellness, be it nutrition, fitness, or mental wellness.

In summary, spending time on your health can change the course of your life. It all starts with small, seemingly trivial decisions and the next thing you know, you’re looking back on the person you used to be in amazement. It’s worth the journey!

Cork Kerry Community Healthcare is reminding new parents and parents of younger children that they can contact their local Public Health Nurse for support if they have any concerns about their child’s development.

Public Health Nurses (PHN) provide child health screening, developmental surveillance, key health messages and support to parents from birth.

While public health nurses are still visiting new babies and their parents after their discharge from maternity hospitals, a number of other scheduled early childhood appointments have been paused.

The purpose of these early childhood appointments is to carry out a developmental assessment to see if your child is growing and developing skills that are suitable for their age and similar to children of the same age. It also allows parents and guardians an opportunity to discuss any concerns they may have and to refer your child to other healthcare services if required.

Regrettably due to COVID-19 restrictions and related demands on services, child vision and hearing checks for Junior and Senior Infant pupils, are

paused. Immunisation clinics, including HPV (human papillomavirus) are also delayed. Clinics will recommence once current Level 5 restrictions are withdrawn. Initially these clinics will address the appointments postponed during previous lockdowns.

"While these developmental assessments are paused, there are still plenty of activities which parents can do at home with their children to support their development,” Public Health Nurse for South Lee, Aine O'Sullivan, said. “We also recommend that you look at the HSE website mychild.ie, where there’s lot of very useful and easy-tofollow advice about child development at different ages, nutrition, safety in the home, dental health, speech and social and emotional development."

Parents and guardians can access useful books on mychild.ie.

In addition, parents should still contact their GP to arrange visits for their vaccines at two, four, six, 12 and 13 months.

These important vaccines protect babies from serious infectious diseases.

Dear Editor, In last week’s issue of the Killarney Advertiser Eamon Fitzgerald wrote about a plan to build a Kerry Sport and Cultural Centre on the grounds of Fitzgerald Stadium.

I fully agree with Eamon's piece.

I also support Liam Chute and his committee and Cllr Michael Gleeson who first mooted the idea in 2010.

I'm glad that there are efforts underway to resurrect the ambitious plans.

I am also glad that Der Brosnan and his hard working committee in Fitzgerald Stadium are still supporting this project, and East Kerry GAA Board supports the project also.

Many people believe that Fitzgerald Stadium is the home of Kerry football, ladies football, hurling and camogie, and this major project will make it more attractive for all, not just on the days of big matches but for school tours, the musical culture of Sliabh Luachra and Scór etc. It could also provide a home for the Radio Kerry archives as well as a collection of memorabilia such as jerseys, boots, old medals, match programmes, and

the Kerry Library service could make it all possible.

The East Kerry GAA Board, GAA County Board, and clubs across the county will not be found wanting and will support such projects.

The all weather amenity would be a major boost to Killarney and Kerry.

The project is ready with everything in place except the necessary finance to get it over the line and it would be a benefit to all walks of life as it would feature all aspects of Kerry sport and culture.

I thank members of Killarney Municipal District Council and Cllr Michael Gleeson who brought the motion before Killarney KMD recently.

And l call on Minister for Sport Catherine Martin TD and Fáilte Ireland to provided funding for this project and I will assist with any help and support.

New captain sets sights on Div 1 Recently-appointed Kerry captain Aislinn Desmond speaks to Adam Moynihan about her goals for 2021, the proposed LGFA/GAA merger, and the future of the ladies game Hi Aislinn. Thanks for taking the time to speak to me. First things first: congratulations on being named Kerry captain. It must be a very proud moment for you.

Yeah, definitely. It’s a great honour to be selected as captain. It’s one of those accolades you dream about when you’re growing up, so it’s an absolute privilege to be representing the Kerry ladies as captain.

I’m sure, considering the experience you have, that you’re a leader in the dressing room already. In that regard, will the captaincy change much for you and your role within the camp?

I wouldn’t say my role will change too much to be honest. There are a lot of leaders in the team. Even though I am getting the official title now, I’d always try my best to be a leader on the pitch anyway.

Unfortunately we don’t really know when the season is going to start due to COVID. How has the latest lockdown been for you personally, and how challenging has it been for the

team?

Yeah, it has been hard enough for everyone. I suppose we’re fortunate enough to be considered elite athletes so we get to train individually, and we got to play football last year. We’re privileged in that regard.

Did the pandemic make things difficult for you, both football-wise and personally with work etc., in 2020?

Work (JRI America) have been very obliging. We got to work from home immediately so there wasn’t any pressure from that side of things. Training-wise, we all got our individual programmes so we were kept going with that. Once we got back training collectively, the lads (Kerry managers Darragh Long and Declan Quill) were very good. They implemented all the COVID guidelines and made sure they were adhered to.

What have Darragh and Declan brought to the set-up since arriving at the start of last year?

They’ve implemented a good work ethic model and they’ve definitely brought unity back to the team. Everybody is

playing for each other now, which is a great thing. Everyone has real respect for both Darragh and Declan. We want to win for them.

How would you sum up Kerry’s performances in 2020?

Well, we had a good league campaign.

We were scheduled to be in a National League final but then COVID hit. In the championship, we got Cavan first and we won that, and then we were in with Cork. Unfortunately, we just fell short on the day.

And on a personal level?

It’s nice to be considered an elite athlete, which means you still get to go to the gym and you still get to train. But, overall, it was a hard year for everyone, myself included. You’d miss being around the team.

You were part of the Rathmore side that won the County Championship last year. How significant an achievement was that?

Yeah, that was unreal for the club. It was the first time ever that Rathmore had won it. We had been knocking on the door for a while – it was our third time being in a final. Thankfully, it was third time lucky. It’s one of those achievements that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

And I’m sure that having family involved made it even more special.

It was so lovely to see how happy dad (Denis, the team’s manager) was. And then having Caitriona (sister and teammate) there as well… We had no supporters (due to COVID), but it was nice to have some bit of family there on the day.

When the season does get up and running, what are the goals for 2021?

For Kerry, we have a clear vision on getting out of Division 2. We want to get up to Division 1 because that’s where the best teams are. In order to compete with the best, you have to play with the best. I feel like we should be able to get out of Division 2 this year and get up to Division 1.

Which teams are likely to be Kerry’s main rivals in the league?

I’d say Armagh, they had a really strong season last year and Aimee Mackin is back for them, and Meath, who are after coming up from Division 3. They have some fine players and they’re really strong physically. Division 2 is a tough one to get out of – we definitely won’t be taking it for granted. We know we’ll have our work cut out for us.

Are there any young Kerry players that we should keep an eye on in 2021?

There are some really good footballers coming through, players like Ava Doherty from Glenflesk, Danielle O’Leary from Rathmore and Anna Clifford from Fossa.

Taking a broader view of the sport as whole, what kind of shape do you think ladies football is in right now?

I definitely think that there’s room for improvement. Hopefully the amalgamation of the GAA and the LGFA is underway; they’re definitely in talks at the moment to see if it’s something that can be implemented. I don’t think it will be done in my time playing football, but hopefully in the long-term this is something that will be completed. It would be for the good of the game.

In what ways do you believe an amalgamation would benefit the ladies game?

I think it would eliminate some of the discrepancies that exist between men’s and ladies football. There would definitely be more publicity, there would be more interest in the game, and I think it would be more professionally ran. It would be good for ladies football to be under the same umbrella as the GAA. The WGPA and the GPA merged towards the end of last year. A positive move as well?

The WGPA have done great work with the ladies footballers and, in fairness, they’re always there for us. It’s excellent that they have merged with the GPA. I suppose episodes like the Galway and Cork match last year highlight the fact that the men’s and women’s games are not on a level playing field.

Absolutely. By the sounds of things, Galway were hard done by. Finding out on the morning of a game that your venue has changed, and then they didn’t get much time on the pitch either for their warm-up. Supposedly

they only got eight minutes. That’s a bit unfair. Factors like that do affect the game. And then the only reason the match was shown was because Valerie Mulcahy had it on her live feed on Instagram. Like, it’s an All-Ireland semi-final. I don’t think that would happen in the men’s. It was just unfortunate how it played out.

You made your debut with Kerry in 2009. Has people’s perception of ladies’ football, and women in sport in general, shifted over the past 12 years?

I think there has been a shift. Lidl came on board and sponsored the ladies football. They’ve done great work and have been pumping money into the grassroots. TG4 came on board, televising the matches. For our county final, I think that over 2,000 people watched the live stream. There is interest in it. The more that it’s publicised, the more interest there will be, and then more girls will stay playing football as a result.

This is your opportunity to criticise people like me, but do you think the media can do more to promote ladies football? There is clearly a difference between the coverage afforded to men’s and women’s sport.

There is, but you can’t really focus on the negatives. You have to think of the positives. For instance, even doing this interview. There is more publicity surrounding ladies football now, which is for the greater good of the game.

Hopefully there will be plenty of action to write about sooner rather than later. All the best for the season ahead.

Eamonn Fitzgerald talks to ever-humble Dr Crokes vice-president Dan Kelleher about his remarkable life in the GAA, which included many football and hurling triumphs as well as a prominent role in the relaying of the Fitzgerald Stadium’s famous ‘Prunty’ pitch.

Eamonn Fitzgerald: Hello Dan. Tom Kerrisk (Coolcorcoran) contacted me saying that he had received a phone call from a friend of his in Fermanagh informing him that his neighbour, Joe Prunty, had passed away. You had a lot of dealings with Joe back in the 1980s.

Dan Kelleher: I am very sad to hear that. He was a very religious man and a great supporter of pilgrimages to Medjugorje. He was very innovative and a man before his time.

EF: Just like the late, great Michael Coiny (O’Connor), Ross Road, who

first introduced you to Joe Prunty, or Prunty as he was better known for pioneering the Prunty pitches. He won four Fermanagh SFCs with his Roslea Shamrocks club (1955-1958) and picked up an All-Ireland junior football medal in 1959 when Fermanagh beat Kerry.

DK: Two great men and Michael was always thinking ahead. When I came to Killarney in 1963 to take up the job with the National Park (superintendent), I played with the Crokes and I joined the Fitzgerald Stadium committee. Michael came to me with an idea that he had

I enjoyed it all and made some great friends all over the place. about upgrading the pitch. He knew from my qualifications in agriculture that I would be interested. He had seen that the pitch flooded quite easily when you got heavy rain, making it very difficult for the players and often leading to postponements at club and county levels. Somehow, he heard about Joe Prunty coming up with a drainage solution, which was very novel at the time.

He contacted Prunty and asked him to come to Killarney to examine the pitch and to assess all the logistics that would be involved in the project. Money was scarce enough at the time and after much discussion, the committee asked Michael to contact Joe Prunty to tender for the job the on the pitch. It took off from there.

EF: There were no Prunty pitches when you started to play hurling as an Under 14 in 1948 in your native Aghabullogoe in Cork.

DK: No, indeed. But we were so happy to have any field to play on.

EF: Ever before you came to Killarney, you were a very accomplished hurler and played at a very high level.

DK: I had plenty games alright.

EK: As humble as ever, Dan. Many of our readers may not know that you hurled with the Cork minors in 1954 and with the juniors in 1957. You played senior with Cork in several Oireachtas and tournament games 1959-1964. You also played at fullback for the Kerry senior hurlers, who won the Home National League finals in 1969 and 1970, but lost to Warwickshire. You won three much-coveted Fitzgibbon Cups with UCC and a fourth one when you went Dublin to further your studies. Recently, RTÉ paid a tribute to mark the centenary of Christy Ring and viewers would have seen you in action in 1967 with UCC in a Cork SHC game versus Glen Rovers, the last game of the famous Christy Ring. How good was Ringy?

DK: He was very advanced in years that time, but he was still great. No one could ever match him. Very skilful and almighty strong, he had fierce power

Michael O’Connor came to me with an idea that he had about upgrading the pitch.

He knew from my qualifications in agriculture that I would be interested. in his arms and wrists. The hurling was very physical at that time, unlike today, but he had it all. Do you remember the 1954 All Ireland final when Cork were two points down and going for the fourin-a-row? With time running out he got the ball on the wing, made great strides and with only one thing on his mind - a goal - he let fly at Art Foley. Somehow, Foley saved it. Ringy went straight in and congratulated him.

EF: You won a Cork SHC with the college in 1963 and a Kerry SHC with Killarney in 1969. That was a great achievement. Of course, you had some Kerry footballers on that team, who weren’t too experienced with the ‘camán’.

DK: Yes, we had Brendan Lynch, Derry Crowley, Tom Prendergast and Johnny Culloty, of course. Johnny was a great hurler and footballer, winning All-Irelands in football and National Leagues in hurling.

EF: You were involved with Dr Crokes in 2020 when they won the Kerry IHC final versus Tralee Parnells. Ye have now applied to the Kerry County Board to go senior in 2021, but are

ye strong enough to take on the traditional hurling clubs in north Kerry?

I’m sure the application will be rubber-stamped.

DK: We did have a few players from football clubs who do not have a hurling team of their own and they were helpful. A big number of the team are young having, coming up from U8 with the club, but I am in favour of other players coming in. The Killarney team of the 1969 era and then St Pat’s East Kerry were very successful. Seán Kelly did great work promoting hurling with St Pat’s in East Kerry. The likes of Pa Doyle, Donie Brosnan, Pat Delaney and Pat O’Brien kept the hurling alive. Of course you had local players like Seánie O’Shea, who hurled with the Kerry seniors for several years.

EF: Hurling was very much alive in the fifties with players like Johnny and Mickey Culloty, Nip Looney, Paddy Bomber, Noelie McCarthy. They won three Kerry minor hurling titles in a row, masterminded by Ben Campion and the Gunner (Denis O’Brien).

DK: Yes. John Lenihan has done great work since he came to Killarney from Newtownshandrum 20 years ago and he gets great help from those interested in hurling in this area. There were always hurlers around and there is the basis of a team available now to compete well in Kerry senior hurling.

EF: You were coaching the Crokes juveniles for over 20 years and you also played football for many years.

DK: I joined the Crokes when I came to Killarney and we won the O’Donoghue Cup in 1968. You remember that yourself. We beat Spa in the final. More like Tom Long did, scoring four goals and very few points. Spa went on from that

to win several O’Donoghue Cups.

EF: 1970 was good to you as you won a Kerry SFC medal versus Waterville with that all-powerful East Kerry team, captained by Mick Gleeson, as they completed the three-in-a-row.

DK: They were great times.

EF: When you retired you were in huge demand for refereeing hurling games and you were deeply involved in juvenile affairs.

DK: I was quite willing and happy to do it and when I got to the age of 65, I gave it up.

EF: Playing hurling U14 with Aghabullogue in 1948 to St Pat’s East Kerry in 1986, was a long stint and plenty football as well, bringing it all back home to Kilbrin winning a coveted Duhallow football title. What a way to hang up your boots. Finishing in 1978 winning, how did you get time and enthusiasm to do so much refereeing, coaching and administrative work with your clubs?

DK: I enjoyed it all and made some great friends all over the place.

EF: As usual, it is great talking to you, an octogenarian, delving into your sporting life. You are as humble as ever about your outstanding achievements and enthusiasm, still involved with Dr Crokes as vice-president – not just honorary, but active.

DK: Thank you.

Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues

What exactly makes a female athlete a ‘lady’?

I came across a tweet the other day that raised an interesting point.

(And with no live sport to write about, you better believe I’m going to milk it for all that it’s worth.)

BBC Sport presenter Sarah Mulkerrins posed the following question to her followers: “Am I the only one that would remove all mention of ‘ladies’ in women’s sport?” The replies were overwhelmingly in favour of Mulkerrins’ suggestion, with prominent journalists and reporters like Greg Allen, Kieran Cunningham and Jacqui Oatley all siding with the Irishwoman.

All told, of the 100-plus comments and quote retweets, at least 90% agreed that ‘ladies’ should be ditched from the sporting lexicon.

In a follow-up article, Fiona Tomas, a sports reporter for The Telegraph, explained why she “loathes” the word.

“Overt gender marking has always been an inherent problem for women in sport, but the term ‘ladies’ takes it to a whole new level. For me, the term screams physical fragility, reinforces sexist stereotypes and depicts sportswomen as inferior to sportsmen.

“The lady boxers, jockeys and footballers of this world have bigger barriers to size up to as sportswomen - the fight for increased media coverage, having equal opportunities and the battle to change sexist perceptions.

“The word ‘lady’ works against all those aims, feeding Victorian stereotypes that seek to negate and ultimately differen-

tiate, rather than integrate, women’s sport.”

Tomas also highlighted the fact that many English soccer teams have rebranded from ‘ladies’ to ‘women’ in recent years, a trend that was started by Manchester City in 2014. At the time, City and England captain Steph Houghton called it a “very positive name change”.

These days many sports appear to favour ‘women’ over ‘ladies’, at least in an official capacity. Notable exceptions include golf and tennis. The organisers of Wimbledon, the grand old English tennis tournament, refer to male competitors using the equivalent marker, i.e. gentlemen.

Here in Ireland, the national soccer and rugby teams are both referred to as the Irish women’s team.

On the other hand, you also have the Ladies Gaelic Football Association and all the teams, players and competitions under their stewardship are almost exclusively referred to as ‘ladies’.

As fate would have it, I had arranged to interview the new Kerry captain, Aislinn Desmond, the day after the Ladies v Women argument cropped up on my timeline. A Kerry footballer since 2009, Desmond is perhaps better placed than most to address the issue. So, did the ‘Kerry lady’ ever consider that being referred to as a ‘lady’ might be a bit old-fashioned?

“Not really,” she said, “…until I read those comments online. Maybe because it’s called the LGFA, that’s what I’ve always grown up seeing and hearing. I never really thought about it. “‘Ladies’ isn’t a word I’d use in my day-today life. Like, it is old-fashioned. When I saw the comments I did think to myself, ‘Jeez, yeah, that’s so weird’.

“But I’ve only ever known it as ‘ladies football’.”

Ideally, Desmond concluded, we wouldn’t need to use the terms ‘ladies football’ or ‘women’s football’ at all. It would just be ‘Gaelic football’, regardless of gender.

POLL

I ran a poll on my own Instagram (@AdamMoynihan) just to gauge the general feeling amongst my female followers and the results were interesting. 58% of the women who responded said the use of the word ‘ladies’ in sporting contexts didn’t bother them, while the remaining 42% said they would prefer to see the word ‘women’ being used.

There appears to be no clear consensus, at least not amongst my modest Instagram following, although I should also point out that there were more female athletes on the anti-‘ladies’ side than the ‘pro’.

My male followers (who were not asked to vote but still accounted for 60% of all respondents) were almost exclusively on the pro-‘ladies’ side. Not that it matters.

As a fellow man, it’s obviously not for me to decide whether or not ‘ladies’ is the right term to use either, but I will say that from a journalist’s perspective, it’s not really a word I write with any great enthusiasm. Like most people in 2021, I wouldn’t use ‘ladies’ in the workplace or in any professional environment for that matter, so it does seem a bit out of place.

‘Women’s football’ feels more neutral and respectful, and maybe even a little less condescending, to me than ‘ladies football’ (it should be ladies’, really, but that’s a different can of worms).

Although, again, it’s not for me to say.

Tennis legend Serena Williams might be referred to as a 'woman' in Melbourne, Paris and Flushing Meadows, but she is still considered a 'lady' at Wimbledon.

Club games are not permitted. Dressing rooms, showers and all other indoor training facilities should remain closed for club activities. Club Gyms must remain closed until further notice. No indoor meetings can be held. All officer Training must be delivered online. Outdoor coaching education courses are not permitted.

No organised indoor gatherings can take place under the current restrictions.

Commercial use of indoor halls (for example by state bodies – e.g. HSE/Schools is permitted where agreement was in place prior to March and relevant insurance are in place. No outdoor gatherings on GAA property are permitted. Exception: Walkways may stay open for use by the community with social distancing in place.

Fossa GAA STAY SAFE: As the number of COVID cases begin to fall we hope everyone is keeping well and safe. Please keep to the guidelines set from the GAA for your safety and the safety of other’s. Please keep away from the pitches and clubhouse we all need to do our part and hopefully soon we will all be back on the training fields.

AGM: In a first for Firies Football, Hurling and Ladies Football club, our AGM on Friday evening was held online via Microsoft Teams. It was great to see so many faces and familiar club names together in what has been a very challenging year for everyone on many different levels.

The AGM was attended by more than 90 members and it was great to see the interest that everyone has in the club for the year ahead. The meeting was opened by the Secretary Kevin Cronin and he gave a quick run through on how everything would operate for the AGM in relation to questions, motions and votes.

Chairman Tom Kelliher then formally welcomed everyone and held a minute silence for all club members who had passed since the last AGM. In the secretary’s report, Kevin welcomed everyone and thanked everyone for all their help throughout the year. The club partook

in the COVID-19 Community Delivery Service and a special thanks was made to all the local shops who also helped at this time. He congratulated local men Jack Sherwood, Niall Donoghue, Padraig De Brun, Jerry O’Sullivan and Arthur Fitzgerald on the great achievement of winning the Kerry County Championship. Kevin concluded that he was looking forward to 2021 and for all the teams getting back on the pitch.

Next up to the mic was our Club Registrar Peter Costello who gave a summary of our membership for the year past. The club now boasts a very impressive 550 members since the amalgamation with the ladies club at the beginning of 2020 under the “One Club” initiative. Peter concluded that online applications for 2021 membership will be up and running in mid-February. He was followed by treasurer Padraig O’Sullivan, who gave a very comprehensive report on the club’s finances. He noted that income was down this year due to the suspension of Club Lotto and indoor activities in the Hall in Farranfore. While COVID-19 suspended a lot of club activities, many of the annual club expenditures were still in operation.

Chairman Tom Kelliher then addressed the attendees and said how great it was to have such a large attendance. He acknowledged how difficult a year it was for everyone in the community. He thanked our groundkeeper Ger Foley for his ongoing work on the pitch and especially keeping the whole grounds in line with all COVID-19 requirements. In conclu-

sion Tom was very optimistic for the year ahead and looking forward to seeing everyone back training and playing in Pairc Eamonn in Farranfore again in 2021.

All Club Managers gave their individual reports for the year and there seemed to be a common theme running through them, that was that teams were just getting up to speed and ready for Championship when COVID-19 restriction hit the country back in March. Great praise must be given to all club players who did their individual training for over 4 months. But it was concluded that the lack of group training before the resumption of games in July came a little too quickly for a number of players and lead to a few injuries.

All managers were very optimistic for the year ahead and very much welcomed the club decision to enter a second senior team in Division 6 of the County League for 2021.

The Ladies side of the club were delighted to see a great number of players now attending the academy training. They added that they were delighted with the minor team entering back into competitions last year. They are very much looking forward to hopefully reforming an adult team in the years to come. Outgoing Coiste Na Nog Chairman, Tim Clifford, then addressed everyone and thanked everyone for their help over the last 3 years as chairman. He outlined that the club are in a very strong position, numbers wise and even with the short season, all teams performed very well. He praised Paudie O’Sullivan and John Walsh for all their work on the hurling side of the Club.

The hurling side of the club has grown from strength to strength over Tim’s tenure and concluded in the entering of teams from U8 to U14 in 2020. Tim also thanked outgoing Coiste Na Nog secretary Eugene Cosgrave and Coaching Officer William Harmon for all their work over the last 3 years. Outgoing coaching officer William Harmon then gave a very informative presentation to all present about the clubs coaching policy and about increasing participation within the club and steps in place to retain as many players as possible year on year. The evening concluded with our chairman giving thanks to all the outgoing officers and by welcoming the newly elected officers into the club namely, Derek Comerford as Coiste Na Nog Chairman, Brain McLoughlan as Coiste Na Nog Secretary and Eamonn Foley as Coaching Officer.

It was great to see so many attend our AGM on the night and we look forward to seeing everyone in person in the not so distant future.

This is the same platform that parents logged on to last year to fill in Covid Health Questioneers so most of you will have an account set up already. LISTRY GAA AGM: Due to Covid restrictions we will hold our AGM for 2020 online. Date is Friday February 12th commencing at 7.30 pm. Glenflesk GAA COVID-19 SMALL GRANT SCHEME: We wish to acknowledge with many thanks the COVID19 Small Grant Scheme allocation of €1,420 from the Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership and Sport Ireland.

This grant is to cover the cost of hand sanitisers and Covid compliance supplies which were installed at each pitch and in the club grounds.
