Cllr Donal Grady will be replaced by his son Martin on the Killarney Municipal Council after the long-serving councillor called time on his political career this week.
Last month the Killarney Advertiser revealed that this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting would be his last. He formally announced his retirement at Wednesday’s meeting where colleagues piad tribute to his contribution to the local political scene.
The veteran politician today pulled up a seat to the debating table in the Killarney town hall for the last time as he attended his final Killarney Municipal District meeting 24 years after his first election. The Independent public representative, who is stepping away from active politics, said he has very mixed emotions but the time is right for new and fresh blood.
It is expected that his son, Martin, will be co-opted to the seat at the next meeting of the council.
Cllr Grady served on the former Killarney Town Council from June 1999 until it was disbanded in 2014 when he won a seat
on Killarney Municipal District.
“His fingerprints are on a number of projects, too many to mention. Killarney has been the better of Cllr Grady having been elected as a representative of this town,” Cllr Kelleher said.
Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan recalled how the two of them may not have always agreed on political matters they remained friends outside the chamber.
“There was skin and hair flying at times but we went for coffee afterwards and that was that,” said O’Calllaghan.
Cllr Brendan Cronin: “He served the town and county with dedication.”
Cllr Maura Healy-Rae said “Killarney and its people were always his passion,” while
Cllr John O’Donoghue said: “He did his service in the best interests of the town.”
Killarney Municipal District Manager, Angela McAllen added:
“He was hardworking and long-serving. He brought great and passionate debate.”
Kerry County Council is to monitor illegal dumping at Rahanane, Kilcummin.
At a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting Cllr Donal Grady highlighted illegal dumping issues in the area. He called for signs to be erected in the locality in an effort to curb the issue.
A council official told the meeting: “The Environment Department has patrolled the area and spoken with local groups about illegal dumping. At present there are illegal dumping signs in the general area, but we will keep the area under review and if the issue persists more signage can be erected in the future.”
Cllr Donal GradyThe property value of St Finan’s Hospital and its adjoining lands are to be revalued.
The landmark site has been vacant since 2012.
There have been several proposals put forward, including a site for social housing and a potential university campus but so far nothing has been done and the site continues to fall further into disrepair.
Current owners, the Health Services Executive insist the site will only be sold or transferred to other state bodies for its full market value.
That puts it out of reach of Kerry County Council which could also be faced with a multi-million euro repair bill for the dilapidated building which is also a protected structure.
Earlier this year Killarney Municipal District councillors wrote to the HSE seeking a current value on the property.
A reply was presented at this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.
“The HSE can confirm that a valuation of lands at St Finan’s Killarney was carried out in June 2018. Due to the time which has passed and changes to the site, a re-evaluation will be required,” said Paul De Freine, who is the National Director of Capital Estates with the HSE.
“the HSE will liaise with Kerry County Council and arrange for the Valuation Office to complete a current valuation of the St Finan’s site. Once the valuation has been issued to the HSE it will be shared as appropriate.
Almost three out of four intern nurses and midwives (73%) said staffing levels in their workplaces were not sufficient to support a positive learning environment, according to a new survey published by the Irish Nurses and Midwifes Organisation.
The IMNO’s annual conference is taking place in the Gleneagle Hotel this weekend.
One of the key events in the week-long conference was the publication of the survey.
With large numbers of nursing and midwifery interns stating their intention to leave Ireland post-qualification, 33% stated that if staffing and working conditions were improved, they would delay their departure. 54% also stated pay was a significant factor in whether they would consider remaining in Ireland a further year after qualifying.
The pedestrianisation of Plunkett Street is never far away from the agenda of Killarney Municipal District council.
| By Sean MoriartyThe pedestrianisation of Plunkett Street was one of a number of measures and supports put in place as part of the Safe Streets Mobility Plan across Killarney Town during the Covid-19 Emergency Response.
The COVID-19 measures have been extended until December this year after a council vote earlier this year.
Some believe that the closure of Plunkett St to traffic is adding to Killarney’s congestion woes during the busy summer months.
Cllr Donal Grady, at this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting called for the
street to re-opened for one week to see if it would relieve some of the traffic congestion in the town centre. However, his proposal was shot down.
“Feedback from businesses in particular has been very positive, and the experience of visitors to the town has been enhanced by providing a more open and vibrant streetscape in the town,” said a council official.
“Additionally, the urban renewal town centre and street upgrade for Killarney was approved in September to proceed to planning and detailed design stage and allows for the consideration for potential inclusion of some of these measures in the wider development of the town centre.”
When prompted to provide further information to support their answers interns cited factors such as a lack of adequate breaks, unmanageable pressure, exhaustion, and a lack of safe staff-to-patient ratios across the Irish health service among the reasons for considering leaving Ireland or moving to the private healthcare sector.
INMO Student and New Graduate Officer
Roisin O’Connell said: “We simply can’t afford to be losing newly qualified nurses and midwives, but in light of the conditions they’re describing it’s not surprising so many of them want to leave.
“Final year students are looking at their qualified colleagues who are burned out and exhausted and they’re seeing how
they’re treated by their employer. They see the chronic understaffing and the salary they’re expecting to receive next year and deciding it’s just not worth it.
“These are young people who joined these professions and completed their training because they love nursing and midwifery, and for many of them we’re seeing that the system has managed to take all of the joy out of their jobs before their careers have even begun.”
INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said: “Measures need to be implemented to ensure safer staffing across the health service and better supports for students and intern, or else we’re looking at a long-term skills shortage in the health service that will have a direct impact on patient care.
“The survey results here show us that student nurses and midwives need to be supported in learning environments throughout and then given early offers of employment with information from the HSE on start date and salary – the delay in this process is actually causing us to lose qualified nurses as they get the information too late and in too many cases the NHS has offers made before the Irish employer.
“The INMO continues to call for increased undergraduate places and more routes to accessing nursing and midwifery training, so we can increase the numbers of graduates. However, we also need to make working in Ireland a viable option for these graduates, or they will take their skills and their qualifications to countries that can offer them a better life and a better career.”
Killarney Gardai say, overall, they were happy with Assess Ireland Rally of the Lake weekend.
The town was packed to capacity for the annual motorsport event.
A total of 22 arrests – mainly for driving offences – were made over the weekend.
Several public order arrests were too. Two serious incidents remain under investigation.
A taxi driver was allegedly assaulted near Muckross in the early hours of Sunday morning.
A man was assaulted and needed hospital treatment in a town centre hotel on Saturday morning.

The Gleneagle Concert Band’s annual concert in aid of local causes is set to take place on Sunday, May 14 at 8pm.
The town band will be joined in The Gleneagle Hotel by guest artists from St Brendan's College Killarney.
All proceeds from this concert will be allocated to Comfort for Chemo Kerry, St Mary’s Church of Ireland Killarney Window Restoration Fund, St Brendan's College Killarney and the Gleneagle Concert Band Music Education Programme instrument loan scheme.
Expect something for all musical tastes including military marches, classical music, jazz numbers, film music, choral music and vocal hits.
“We are really pleased to collaborate with local charities and we hope the public will come out in great numbers to support this worthwhile fundraising venture," Band Music Development officer Vincent Condon said.
"Comfort for Chemo Kerry’s mission is to fundraise €5 million to build and equip a state-of-the-art, purpose-built chemotherapy unit for the people of Kerry who need chemotherapy and oncological treatments. The facility will ensure the best care available is delivered in an environment that is welcoming, reassuring, comfortable and dignified. The band and choir are musically in excellent form and I extend an open invitation to music enthusiasts to come and join us for what will be an evening of great entertainment."
Band Manager Ciaran Lynch added that “These are very exciting times for the band which would not be possible without the encouragement and support we receive from the political, business sector and general public in Killarney".
"This concert will be a highlight and a celebration of the voluntary work, community service and musical excellence that exists here in Killarney. We are delighted to have St Mary's Church of Ireland Killarney as a charity partner as many of the beautiful stained windows in the church are sagging and in danger of collapsing.
These windows are very old and have significant historic importance for Killarney. A funding appeal has been launched by the church to raise €50,000 to replace the protective glazing with stronger laminate glass to include ventilation, and to restore the warped stained glass panels.”

At this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting Cllr Niall Kelleher asked for an update on the project. He said: “When is it envisaged that funding will be made available for the already agreed cycle routes. Have negotiations concluded with landowners?”
A council official replied, “Planning consent for the provision of cycle lanes along Rock Road, Upper Lewis Road, Park Road, Deerpark Road and Chestnut Drive were approved by Killarney Municipal
District in April 2021.
“Funding has been approved by the National Transport Authority to advance the construction of the Rock Road Cycle Way this year. The 2023 funding for the other four schemes [Upper Lewis Road, Park Road, Deerpark Road and Chestnut Drive] is to progress the detailed design of these schemes. Further funding will be sought for 2024 to progress construction works. Negotiations with relevant landowners is ongoing.”
A roundabout for the notoriously busy Coolcaslagh Junction has reached the design stage but Kerry County Council does not have the funds to build it.
At this week’s Killarney Municipal District Meeting, Cllr Maura Healy Rae asked Kerry County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland to give an update regarding the provision of a roundabout at Coolcaslagh Junction.
A council official replied: “Conceptual designs for a roundabout have been developed. A junction upgrade at this location is being considered as part of a wider road improvement initiative including the provision of an active travel connection to Lissyviggeen School. There is no specific funding for this project however, Kerry County Council will engage with the Transport Infrastructure Ireland to seek funding to progress this scheme.”
What is missing in Killarney is a Michelin starred restaurant, not just our town but the whole of Kerry.
| By Aidan QuirkeIt is an outlier considering our rich local produce and many home-grown international chefs.
Our long history of tourism would lead one to expect that there is a star amongst some of our fine dining establishments.
Rozzers was voted by TripAdvisor reviewers in 2021 and 2022 as the top restaurant in Ireland offering a fine dining experience.
It knocked Chapter One, a 2-star restaurant, off the top spot. That is some feat, and we should celebrate this fantastic achievement.
A Michelin star restaurant, while impor-
tant is not the end all and be all to Killarney or Kerry.
It does, however, bring many column inches and is a great marketing tool for town and county.
When will we get one? That is the question I am posing and to my mind we have a ready-made market for such an establishment.
Certainly, all the main hotels have invested in their culinary staff and dining rooms post pandemic, and it is more of when rather than if for a star for Killarney.
Let’s not forget the team at Rozzers are the people’s choice and in many ways that is the greatest ‘star’ of all. Club members Jason Murphy and Adam Murphy were in Tweed Valley Scotland last weekend competing at the Tweedelove International Enduro Event.
Roads currently affected by the Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme works may have to be dug out again in the future to facilitate households that have not already signed up for the scheme.
At this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting Cllr Healy Rae asked: "Uisce Éireann would sanction leaving out connections along the route of the Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme to avoid having to dig a significant depth at a considerable cost when people want to connect to the scheme at a later date.”
A Kerry County Council official replied: “This is a matter for resolution by the
Members. The scope of the Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme includes installation of a sewer network and construction of a pumping station. The scope of the scheme does not include the provision of connection points or new wastewater connections to properties in the area along the route of the wastewater network. Following engagement since the commencement of project delivery with stakeholders in Kilcummin (regarding making connection applications), anyone who has paid for a connection will be connected in full to the scheme at the standard rate as part of the delivery of the pipeline project.”
Saturday’s practice highlighted the high level of competition that lay ahead with a number of top International professionals in the field.
Jason rode consistently well throughout the six stages to finish 13th in his category of 119. Due to unfortunate circumstances, Adam was unable to start the race on Sunday but will no doubt be back in action soon.
Last weekend saw back to back racing in the Slieve Bloom Mountains for the final two rounds of this year’s XC Biking Blitz Series.
Mark McGlynn, Patrick Clifford, Michael Coghlan and Callum Steadman all took to the start line for Killarney CC. Some top 10 results over the two days along with a second and a first place for Callum Steadman in the Junior race finished out the series on a high for Killarney CC members.
The Kanturk three-Day stage race run by O’Leary Stone Kanturk Cycling Club took place over the Bank Holiday weekend in the neighbouring county Cork. Killarney CC had Sam Bolger, Ewan Buckley and Luke Costello in the Senior race and Ben O’Keeffe competing in the U16s. Some hard efforts all weekend were well rewarded with Ewan taking home the A3 GC jersey after four taxing stages. Sam finished third on Stage three and went one better on Stage four, to collect silver. Luke's aggressive racing in his first stage race meant he finished amongst the top Junior racers in the country. Ben also battled hard all weekend in the U16’s race and will be one to watch in the future.
David Culloty of AllHuman VeloRevolution racing also took part and got into the winning move on the final day to finish fifth in stage four.
Registration has now opened on eventmaster for the Clubs Sportive Cycle, the Three Peaks Challenge which takes place on June 17 from St. Oliver's School, Ballycasheen.

This year marks ten years of Celtic Steps The Show and the Irish Music and Dance Show kicked off their season in style with a sensational Launch Party on Friday last at their home of the Killarney Racecourse.
The event was attended by a variety of local businesspeople and politicians as well as media and some of Kerry’s most popular personalities.
Their guests were treated to a lively trad set by the Celtic Steps Band while mingling and enjoying some drinks and canapes.
The Pre-Show Celebration was concluded with a heartfelt speech from David Rea & Sean Murphy, Co-Directors who took a walk down memory lane and talked about the Show’s humble beginnings and inspiring journey.
Sean Murphy remembered how Celtic Steps commenced in the summer of 2012, in the Mangerton Suite of The Gleneagle Hotel “in more hope than certainty that there was space for another Irish Dance and Music Show”. What transpired was a show that combined the best of Kerry’s culture and folklore through song and embodied a strong belief in displaying all styles of Irish dance, not just the more commonly accepted examples in many shows nowadays.
It quickly became apparent that both locals and tourists were engaged by the natural, raw and live synergy that the dancers and musicians brought to the stage.
With its core ethos firmly honed on employing local talent, currently numbering
40-50 employees, Celtic Steps exploded through its first few very successful seasons in its new home at the INEC, Gleneagle.
As tourism grew even bigger up to 2019, the Show kept up its side of the bargain and partnering with some of the world’s biggest inbound operators continued to trend upwards in audience numbers to where it regularly plays to four hundred people nightly in the high season, in a state-of-the-art theatre at Killarney Racecourse which has been home since 2017.
In 2019, the Show opened a second nightly performance at the Brandon Hotel Conference Centre, where now Celtic Steps runs both during the period from May to October, doubling staff numbers and offering visitors to Kerry, an experience unsurpassed in visitor attractions. Post pandemic, the Show has now re-positioned itself as one of the top visitor and local night-time entertainment options throughout a long season performing just under three hundred concerts in County Kerry and now travelling internationally, back to Holland for a full month of Christmas shows in December 2023 on the back of a hugely successful 2022 tour. Throughout the 21 shows in The Netherlands this year, they will personally sell to over 15,000 Dutch attendees nightly,
playing in twenty-one different venues across the country.
“It has been an amazing journey to do something that you love nightly, however it would have been impossible without the local support of businesses in Kerry and special mention at this juncture to

“Pat was a minor trainer with Killarney and Kerry Camogie last year and unfortunately passed away on December 19 last year. Our chairperson Sarah Dineen contacted Pat's wife Geraldine to get her blessing,” explained PRO Caroline O’Leary.
“The tournament was well attended with Geraldine, Ilona [Pat's daughter] and extended members of the family.”
The schools that participated were: Cahir NS, Hollymount NS, Knockanes NS and Tiernaboul NS.
Hollymount NS had a very exciting win over Tiernaboul in the final, with a player from Tiernaboul receiving the Player of the Tournament from Ilona Sheehan
“We also held a Poc Fada competition & Player of the Tournament trophy. All trophies were sponsored by Pat's employer
The Gleneagle Hotel, whom we are very grateful to,” added Caroline. “The players from all schools played their hearts out and we would like to say a huge thanks to them & their teachers and trainers for bringing them to participate.
Geraldine and Ilona presented the winning team captain with the winners’ trophy.”

This coffee table publication will be available from all hotels, restaurants, bars, and tourism spots from this weekend on. It will be distributed weekly throughout
the summer and is sure to be a massive success with visitors and locals alike. The magazine is free, and to make this possible it is through advertising by businesses in our community. Check travel advice and entry requirements for your destination
Check the travel advice and entry requirements for the country you are travelling to before you travel abroad. You might need a visa, this depends on your destination. You can find out if you need a visa on the Department of Foreign Affairs website.
Check that your and your families’ passports are in date before you book. Passport Online is open to all applicants. You can get information on how to renew your passport or how to apply for your child’s first passport there, or by contacting your local Citizens Information Centre.
You should get travel insurance for yourself and your family. If you have a travel insurance policy already, or travel insurance is included in your health insurance policy, you should check that you are covered for hospital treatment for COVID-19. You should bring your European Health Insurance Card with you if you are travelling to the EEA or Switzerland.
HEALTHCARE: UNITED KINGDOM
You cannot use your EHIC in the UK. But you can still get the healthcare you need. You will need to show your Irish passport to the GP or hospital. Make sure that it is in date, it must be renewed every four years and each family member needs their own. An EHIC does not replace travel insurance. Irish people travelling in the UK are entitled to access healthcare through the Common Travel Area.
HEALTHCARE: AUSTRALIA
Ireland and Australia have a reciprocal health agreement. This means that Irish visitors to Australia will receive emergency services and assistance towards the cost of prescribed drugs and medicines on the same basis as persons ordinarily resident in Australia.
If you plan to drive while abroad, make sure that your Irish driving licence is
valid and that you bring it with you. Some countries outside the European Economic Area (the member states of the European Union, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) may require you to hold an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to your Irish driving licence.
Always make sure you are properly insured for driving while overseas. You can get more information on driving abroad from the Road Safety Authority or by contacting your local CIC.
Deirdre advises “It is worth making a note of the address, telephone number and opening hours of the Irish Embassy or Consulate in the country you are visiting. In countries where there is no Irish diplomatic or consular representation, you may seek emergency assistance from embassies or consulates of other European Union countries. The Department of Foreign Affairs website provides advice on what to do to stay safe while abroad and what to do in an emergency.”
Before you travel abroad, these are some other tips to help with your journey.
Check if you need any vaccines or immunisations before you travel (At least 8 weeks in advance)
Make a note of the 24-hour emergency number of your bank so you can cancel your credit card or debit card if it is stolen.
Check your mobile data allowance with your mobile phone service provider. (For travel outside of the EEA). Do you need to bring a special adapter to plug in your electrical devices?
For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the localCitizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www. citizensinformation.ie for further information.
Barnardos children’s charity has launched their annual Big Toddle with the support of ambassador Amy Huberman. The theme this year, Big Toddle Little Heroes, celebrates Ireland’s youngest fundraisers who help vulnerable children their own age by completing a fun half-mile sponsored walk in their crèche, childcare group, preschool or with their families.
Over the last 20 years, toddlers from across the country have raised an incredible €4.46 million in support of Barnardos Early Years services. This work focuses on some of the youngest and most vulnerable children to come through our doors and ensures that they get the best start in life.
Big Toddle Ambassador Amy Huberman said ‘I am delighted to be part of Barnardos Big Toddle and most importantly to support the work of Barnardos. I have been an Ambassador for 10 years now and supporting children to have a better start in life is something very close to my heart. So, to join in the fun, register today at www. barnardos/bigtoddle. Enjoy and happy
Bank of Ireland has announced the next recipients of grants from its Cost of Living Fund today. In Kerry, the recipients include Tralee International Resource Centre, Castlemaine Family Resource Centre, and Listowel Family Resource Centre.
The donations are targeted at groups including children and families at risk, older persons, domestic abuse charities, those with disabilities, lone parents and migrant communities.
The Bank has committed €1 million overall to organisations supporting those most at risk from cost of living pressures, with the funding divided into two tranches. The first part of the €1 million fund was allocated in January with €500,000 fast-tracked to 13 organisations working with vulnerable groups across the island of Ireland with grants from €25,000 up to €100,000. toddling everyone!'
Barnardos Director of Fundraising, Mary Gamble said: “The Big Toddle at 20 years old is such a huge achievement for all our little heroes who have supported our vulnerable families and children across the country for so long. We sincerely thank everyone who has made it such a success. At Barnardos, we know that childhood lasts a lifetime and with the continued help of Ireland’s littlest fundraisers, we can reach even
more vulnerable children who need us. Get involved by registering your family or creche online at barnardos/bigtoddle"
Whether you’re a crèche, a parent or a childminder, you can organise your own Barnardos Big Toddle anytime in May or June by registering at www. barnardos.ie/bigtoddle - your support ensures that some of the youngest and most vulnerable children in Ireland are given the best possible start in life.
The fake Ukrainian document featured a picture of the former prime minister, as well as his correct birthdate of 19 June 1964.
A police spokesman said a car crashed into a pole near a bridge in the city of Groningen shortly after midnight on Sunday. Officers found the car abandoned but later discovered the driver standing nearby. "The person could not identify himself and refused to undertake a breathalyser test," said a Dutch police spokesman. "Inside, police found a fake driver's licence belonging to Boris Johnson.
second round of donations will provide up to 50 smaller non-profit organisations with vital financial support in the form of grants of up to €10,000.
Myles O’Grady, Bank of Ireland Group CEO, commented: “The rising cost of living is a significant challenge for many families across Ireland and that is why we committed €1 million in funding towards our cost of living response fund. Earlier this year we supported organisations working with some of the most vulnerable in our society, and we are pleased to announce today the second round of beneficiaries, which includes
smaller organisations making a real difference in our communities and supporting those most in need.”
Denise Charlton, Chief Executive, Community Foundation Ireland, added:
“Local on-the-ground access and information is central to achieving our mission of equality for all in thriving communities. Our unique connectivity allows us to identify emerging challenges impacting certain communities and has been vital in assessing the impact of the rising cost of living. Partners like Bank of Ireland who share our equality mission allow us to use this local knowl-
edge to strategically support not only those at risk, but also in identifying and implementing solutions. As a philanthropic hub for Ireland we greatly value this long-standing partnership.”
As with previous donations of this nature, the Bank is working closely with Community Foundation Ireland to support effective rollout of the fund. The Foundation has advised the Bank on a wide range of social issues and organisations that require immediate financial support and is managing the donation on behalf of the Bank.
A charity CEO is planning to follow in the footsteps of people living with an excruciatingly painful skin disease by hiking over rocks and stones in his bare feet.
DEBRA Ireland chief executive, Jimmy Fearon, is taking part in his charity’s annual Kerry Challenge fundraiser next month.
Along with 120 participants, he will trek mountain paths and forest trails along the Dingle Peninsula in aid of the charity, which supports the on average 300 people in Ireland with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) – a rare and incurable skin disease.
Also known as ‘Butterfly Skin’, it causes the skin to break out in painful blisters at the slightest touch.
Quinlan’s Fish, the highly acclaimed Cahersiveen based salmon smokery have announced a €12 million deal in collaboration with John Stone Beef to supply their Kenmare-Select Smoked Salmon range to its customers throughout Europe, America, Middle East, and Asian markets.
The deal, worth €12 million over 4 years, will see Quinlan’s Multi-Award-Winning Smoked Salmon products being listed in some of the world’s most luxurious restaurants and hotels along with the finest of Irish Beef which John Stone already supplies to customers throughout the world. The announcement was made at The European Seafood Fair in Barcelona last week. Both companies had also held a masterclass and taste profiling in conjunction with Bord Bia in London`s Butchers Hall with over 40 of the UK`s best known and highly regarded chefs.
As John Stone says themselves “John Stone Beef is an artisan producer, but we have a global reach. All our produce is sourced in Ireland and dry aged and butchered in our Longford factory but tonight – in Tokyo, Hanoi, Dusseldorf, Manila, Dubai, and Singapore – they're eating John Stone Beef”.
Commenting on the deal Liam Quinlan said, "In our 60th anniversary year this will hugely add to our portfolio of highend discerning clients that only want the best produce on their tables”. Liam added that “this deal would not be possible
without the dedication of our tremendous team in Cahersiveen and especially our Master Smoker Sean Jones who has worked tirelessly to not only maintain, but constantly improve the high standards of our Unique Kenmare-Select range of Smoked Salmon."
As the values of Quinlan’s Fish and John Stone Beef are very closely aligned, both companies feel that collaborating will be of mutual benefit and will increase the visibility to a worldwide audience of the two Irish Family Businesses. The deal will also result in excellent advancement opportunities in South Kerry in a company that currently employs more than 150 people creating additional positions in areas such as production, engineering, administration, and quality control. We hope that this along with the long-awaited South Kerry Greenway may encourage working professionals and families to move to the area.
Tim Stone added: “We have been searching for the right partner for some time and The Quinlan Family are synonymous with the highest quality Smoked Salmon with a rich history going back to 1963, so it was the right fit for our business”. He added “Our businesses are very similar in that only the very best will do, and we have seen that the whole team in Cahersiveen are meticulous in the way they produce their Smoked Salmon. This will raise the bar on how small Irish companies can come together to have a global reach”.
Unlike his fellow fundraisers, however, he will not be wearing shoes or socks during his challenge.
Instead, he will walk 10,000 steps of the route barefoot over the course of the three-day challenge, which takes place from May 19-21.
“Epidermolysis Bullosa is a terrible disease which has a profound effect, not only on those diagnosed, but on their families and carers as well,” said Mr Fearon.
“People with EB live with constant pain as a result of blisters. There is no cure at present and in many cases, people cannot walk because of sores on their feet.” Mr Fearon, from Dundrum, Dublin, said
that by walking barefoot in Kerry, he hopes to raise awareness of the disease. “It is hard to imagine what it must be like to live in constant pain,” he added. “By not wearing any shoes or socks during the Kerry challenge, I hope to walk in the footsteps of people living with the disease.”
The money raised will help DEBRA Ireland provide families living with EB with antibacterial silk socks, therapeutic cot sheets and pillowcases, in addition to books and feeling cards to help children with the condition process their emotions.
The charity also funds counselling sessions for adults with EB, play therapy for children, home visits, home adaptations and specialised EB training for nurses and medical staff.
Public donations also help DEBRA Ireland sponsor scientists who are carrying out vital research into finding a cure for the genetic disease.
Although no more space is left for participants on this year’s Kerry challenge, donations can still be made online. “DEBRA Ireland relies heavily on the public’s support to fund projects that not only alleviate the strain and suffering people with EB and their carers endure on a day-to-day basis, but also to help find a cure for the disease,” Mr Fearon said.

| By Michelle CreanAmerican singer Bebe Rexha is set to release her third studio album ‘Bebe’ on April 28. Rexha has stated that the album is heavily inspired by the work of Diana Ross and Fleetwod Mac, trying to capture a '70s/80s pop-rock style. Including collaborations with artists such as Dolly Parton and Snoop Dogg, as well as her previous hit ‘I’m Good (Blue)’, which she produced alongside David Guetta, Ty Dolla Sign and A Boogie with da Hoodie, Rexha has said that she is both “very excited” and “really proud” of her work on the album.
Roach has been working in her local bookstore, Spines, for her entire adult life, and she’d much rather be listening to the latest episode of her favourite true crime podcast than helping the boring, predictable customers the shop attracts, who she looks down on for only having an interest in the genre after it became trendy. However, after a children’s bookseller called Laura joins to try and keep the bookstore afloat, Roach tries, and fails, to befriend her over their shared interest in true crime. Undeterred, Roach learns as much as she can about Laura, eventually discovering her traumatic family history. As Roach realises she may have found herself in her very own true crime story, her interest in Laura quickly becomes an obsession.

Paddington is a 2014 live-action animated comedy film written and directed by Paul King. It was developed from a story by King and Hamish McColl, which was based on the stories of the character Paddington Bear created by Michael Bond. Produced by David Heyman, Paddington stars Ben Whishaw as the voice of the title character, with Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, and Nicole Kidman in live-action roles. The film tells the story of Paddington, an anthropomorphic bear who migrates from the jungles of "Darkest Peru" to the streets of London, where he is adopted by the Brown family. Kidman plays a taxidermist who attempts to add him to her collection.

Once a regular feature of Killarney and District Motor activities, the grass roots sport of autocross will be celebrated the Avenue Hotel on Saturday night.
A special reunion to mark the glory days of autocross racing at Doyle’s (now Cronin’s) Pit will remember the contribution the club has made to the sport. It has been a number of years since KDMC ran autocross event, and the last
ones were ran in Tralee at a Kerry Motor Club shared venue.
Doyle’s pit was once a hotbed of young rally talent and many current top drivers within the club started out in autocross racing.
The last Doyle’s Pit event was in and around 2009 and now the club has extended an invitation to all who races, marshalled or spectated at the venue to meet up for a social occasion on Saturday night.
The Lancia Motor Club of Ireland will host a two day gathering in Kerry this weekend.
The Lancia Atlantic Tour will take place over the weekend of May 5– 7will; be, based in Tralee, and is supported by AutoGlym Ireland and Contract Flooring Supplies Dublin.
Although the iconic Italian brand last officially sold cars in Ireland in 1995, there is still a small but devoted following for Lancias in Ireland of all ages – from PreWar cars to much more recent examples. Over the last few months bookings have been received from all over Ireland and further afield, including a sizeable contingent from the UK.
The main event will take place over stunning roads around the Dingle Peninsula on Saturday while Sunday will visit the North Kerry and East Kerry areas.
“Some very rare and iconic cars are set to appear at the event, from 1930’s Lancia Aprilias to the World Rally Championship
dominating Delta Intergrales and many and varied cars in between, including a pair of 1950’s Lancia Aurelias, which introduced many innovations that are now common or even standard on every road car,” said local organiser Tralee-based Cork man Andrew Mulqueen.
“Lancia remain the most successful manufacturer in the World Rally Championship with 10 manufacturers titles, so it is only natural that some of Kerry’s world-famous rally stages are explored over the weekend, including Inch Beach, Conor Pass and Camp Mountain.
“Although not a competitive event the sight Fulvias, Delta Intergrales and all of the diverse range of Lancias that are booked in are relishing the chance to take on these roads, not forgetting the scenery and unique weather.”
The weekend base for events is The Rose Hotel in Tralee
The local organiser Andrew Mulqueen can be contacted on 087 250 5646.
The Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club presented a cheque of €3,000 to Critical Emergency Response.
The funds were raised at a the club’s recent "Tractors and Tea" charity event in the Killarney Racecourse in March.
“We are always proud to be able to help out local charities while having a show for the public,” said club secretary Richard O Donoghue.
Meanwhile the club will launch its 2023 restoration project on May 12 at the Warehouse Café in Farranfore at 830pm.
It brings a massive early season tourist boost, not just to the town, but to the smaller towns and villages that the event passes through too.
There is no doubt that Rathmore and Gneevequilla were busier than usual last Sunday and the small village of Ardgroom, on the Beara Peninsula was particularly busy last Saturday.
This year’s event was particularly poignant as it was the first Irish rally since the passing the passing of Craig Breen. He would a have wanted the show to go on and while it was a difficult milestone for competitors, organisers and fans, it was one that needed to be crossed with dignity and compassion.
His long time co-driver Paul Nagle, the same man who guided him to success on the 2019 Rally of the Lakes and the 2021 Killarney Historic spoke of his fallen rally brother at the event’s opening ceremony on Friday.
Despite an estimated crowd of about 2,000 people, the respectful silence offered to Paul as he spoke was a testament to how much Craig Breen was loved and admired in Killarney.
The Saturday action centred on the Beara Peninsula. The area is equally loved and feared by drivers.
The breath-taking scenery, for once, took second place to equally draw dropping action and pace.
The crowds were out in force on Sunday, the famous Gortnagne stage was lined from start to finish with people. The farming area was more akin to Croke Park as the glorious sunshine brought both fans and curious locals out in their droves. A massive crowd turned out for the finish ramp at the Gleneagle Hotel too. They were there to welcome hometown hero Noel O’Sullivan who won the rally for the second time.
Some people love the rally, some don’t but each and every person, from marshals, to fans, service mechanics to competitors each left a lot of money in the town.
Long live the rally, its value is not to be under estimated, and without a traditional Munster final football match this weekend, the rally’s financial boost will have to stretch across two weekends at least.

For those of us that love it, the event is our Christmas and St Patrick’s Day all rolled into one.

Killarney local Justin Healy was the branch manager in UB Killarney for nearly 15 years, ably assisted by his branch staff but also his Financial Planning Manager, Mike Doolan, who was in situ for 14 years.
It came as a shock, but Justin was quickly thinking about next his steps “My first thought was my brilliant staff, and that they would lose their jobs, and then to our fantastic customers, who were loyal over the years and with whom we had built up great relationships with, and how this was going to cause hassle for them, which was not their doing. Then of course, I started to think, what about me, what do I do next?”
It was then that Justin spoke to Mike and threw out the idea of maybe taking a leap of faith and instead of going into
another similar PAYE job, to go it alone and look at setting up an independent brokerage.
As Justin says, the idea of being independent was what was the big motivating factor: “to be able to give customers unbiased, independent access to the various companies and products, be it Mortgages, Life companies, Investment or pension providers, was the carrot and with a little advice here and there we decided to go for it.”
One person Justin and Mike sought counsel from was John Healy, Justin’s brother, of Healy Insurances.
As Mike says: “There is great tradition from John and Justin’s late father, Jimmy, who started the Healy Insurance business at 11 New Street, and with John taking that forward to new heights,
it was a natural fit for us to set up at 11 New Street and we are delighted to be here.?'
John, owner of Healy Insurances, says “We are delighted to be involved in this new venture. Justin and Mikes princi-
ples and ethos perfectly align with ours at Healy Insurances. It is a great asset to add another financial service to 11 New Street and we wish them every success. “Healy Doolan Financial are now open for business.
On February 19, 2021, when Ulster Bank announced they were withdrawing from Ireland and effectively shutting down, it came as a shock to everyone, not least the staff.

In loving memory of Mary Kelly (nee Breen) Tangerine House, Hilliard’s Lane, High Street, Killarney Who passed away on 6th May 2022.
As we lovingly remember Mary, so dearly missed by her husband and family, we would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all those who helped and supported us on our sad and sudden loss.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that sympathised with us, sent mass cards and letters of sympathy, floral tributes, online condolences and to all who travelled from both near and afar to attend the funeral home, requiem mass and burial.
A special thank you to Killarney Legion GAA club members for forming a guard of honour after Mary’s requiem mass, she would have been so proud, being Legion’s number one fan!
Thank you to the First Responders who were first on the scene when Mary took ill at home, and also the paramedics.
A heartfelt thank you to the staff of University Hospital Kerry, especially the doctors and nurses in the ICU ward - we are forever grateful for the kindness and compassion you showed us during Mary’s brief stay in ICU. The dignity and respect you showed her went above and beyond, and we are so grateful for that.
Thank you to Fr. Jim Linehan for saying the rosary in the house and for celebrating her beautiful funeral mass, complimented by singer Maura Reen. A word of appreciation to Fr. Gerard O’Leary, Chaplain in UHK for performing the Last Rites.
Thanks also to Mike and Mary O’Shea, for their professional service and support provided throughout the funeral service, and a note of thanks to the grave diggers also.
A special thanks also to the Dromhall Hotel and the Randles family, for providing the meal and refreshments after the funeral.
A special word of appreciation to the extended Kelly and Breen families for their support, and to all those that called to the house, dropped food and offered a helping hand. We hope you know how much we appreciate your continued support.
A final word of thanks to all of Mary’s friends, there are simply too many to mention individually, she was a well-known and well-loved lady, and we know you miss her dearly, as do we.
As a token of appreciation, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass has been offered for the intentions of all those mentioned, as well as those impossible to mention, there are so many.

All-Ireland champions Kerry are set for a couple of mouthwatering fixtures against some old enemies - if they manage to beat Clare in Sunday’s Munster final.
The draw for the inaugural All-Ireland group stage was made at lunchtime on Tuesday and it was decided that the winners of Munster will play in Group 1 alongside the Leinster runners-up (Louth or Dublin), Mayo and Cork.
If Kerry end up in this group, they will welcome Division 1 champs Mayo to Killarney on May 20/21 (fixture details to be confirmed today).
They will then travel to Páirc Uí Chaoimh on June 3/4 to take on Cork before squaring off against the losers of Dublin v Louth at a neutral venue on June 17/18.
If Kerry lose to Clare this weekend, they will find themselves in Group 4 as the Munster runners-up. They will be joined
in this pot by Donegal, Monaghan and the losers of the Ulster final between Derry and Armagh.
The top team in each pool of four will advance directly to the All-Ireland quarter-finals and the second and third placed teams will face off in the preliminary quarter-finals. Only one team in each group will be eliminated at the end of the round robin series.

The winners of Munster will play in Group 1 alongside the Leinster runners-up, Mayo and Cork.
Muckross co-driver Noel O’Sullivan and his Derry-based driver Callum Devine took their second Assess Ireland Rally of the Lakes victory in as many years after an epic two days of motorsport in the West Cork and Killarney areas.
The Volkswagen Polo GTi crew fought back from a puncture on Killarney’s Moll’s Gap opener to then grab the rally lead on stage four, the daunting Ardgroom stage. Despite several challenges and dramas including a late steering rack issue they managed to hold off the advances of Robert Barrable and Gordon Noble in their Citroen C3 Rally 2 to take a 25.1-second victory
O’Sullivan becomes the first Kerry-based competitor to win the rally twice. “I was lost for words the first time, and I really don’t know what to say this time either,” said O’Sullivan. “I grew up watching this rally, and my earlier memories are of Bertie Fisher and Rory Kennedy winning this rally. I never thought I could win, never mind twice, I am very lucky to be competing at the front of this sport and I am very grateful to all who gave me the opportunities.”
Fellow Killarney men and early rally leaders Rob Duggan and Ger Conway had a bitterly disappointing end to what was a brilliant debut performance in their first Killarney outing in a top-line rally car and Rob’s first time competing in a top car since 2018.
Starting off the event with fastest on the first stage, setting a blistering pace on Moll’s Gap to be fastest by 9.8 seconds, the defending modified champion drove a similar Polo to that of the event winners. Fastest again on the opening run over a very wet Moll’s Gap on Sunday morning, the local crew started Sunday morning in third place. Their brilliant run came to a dramatic end on the rally’s penultimate stage, Gortnagane, when they clipped a bank and broke a steering arm. Local driver Alan Ring and his West Cork co-driver Adrian Deasy were another crew on a debut run in another Polo. They realised their pre-event plan of a top-ten finish by coming home in ninth place. It was their first outing in a frontline car in several years after concentrating on historic rallying in recent times. Ring rued the lack of seat time and full confidence in his hired machine but, nevertheless, was very happy with his run.
LOCAL CREWS:
Lawlor’s Cross crew John McCarthy and Kieran O'Donoghue put in one of the drives of the rally to bring their Ford Escort home in tenth place and third in the modified section of the rally.
“We are very happy with the result,” said O’Donoghue, “It was a very hard rally on
cars and men.”
Conor Murphy and Sean Collins overcame a host of problems, including a misfiring engine and a puncture to bring their Ford Escort home in 12th place.
Dave Slattery and Denis Coffey were three places behind in another Escort. They endured a host of problems including a broken throttle and clutch cable over the two days.
Defending junior champions Jason Farrell and Donagh Crowley stepped up to the main rally for the first time and took their Honda Civic to a dominant class 11F win. Mark O'Leary and Andrew Cronin were second in the same class in their Toyota Starlet.
Robert Counihan Timmy Kelly reported a trouble-free run in their Toyota Corolla Twin Cam to finish 37t.
Shane Doyle and William Kelliher were second in their class in their BMW E30 Father and daughter John Hickey and Michelle Hickey had a very enjoyable weekend in their Fubaru.
“I could think of nothing better in the world, all the holidays you can imagine, than a father a daughter competing together in the Rally of the Lakes," said John.
His brother Charlie and his daughter Charlene had to rely on Super Rally rules to get to the finish but also reported an enjoyable weekend.
Raymond O'Neill and Jason O'Connor finished second in class 12 in what was O’Connor’s first attempt at the rally. Despite a few close calls on their home Gortnagane stage, husband and wife Brian Doherty and Tara Duggan had a good weekend in their Ford Fiesta.
Killarney co-driver Tommy Moynihan guided Patrick O'Connor to fourth in class 20 in their Mitsubishi Evo 10. There was an interesting mix of local co-drivers on pacenote duty for the O’Callaghan family. Sean Nolan guided Chris to 59th overall while his mother Hazel, guided by Tony McCarthy was six places behind.
Father and son Tom O'Sullivan and Mark O'Sullivan reported a trouble-free run, as did Maurice Kennelly and Eoin Mulvihill. Thomas Randles and Mark Horgan had severe engine problems in their Ford Escort and had to use Super Rally rules.
Kieran Fitzgerald and Denis O'Leary survived an off-road excursion in Beallaghbeama in their Toyota Starlet to take seventh in Class 11F.
Ruby O'Riordan made her rally debut and guided her father John to fourth in class.
Steven O'Connor and Paul McGlinchy overcame fuel pipe issues to make it to the end.
For the third event in a row, Sean Hickey and Noel Fleming failed to complete the full rally because of alternator problems.
Bob Moran had alternator issues in his Escort but made it to the end.
Stephen O'Connor and Jonathan O'Shea were contesting their first Rally of the Lakes and suffered brake issues in their Toyota Starlet.
Local co-driver Ger Somers and Raymond Spence overcame a host of clutch issues to get their Ford Escort to the finish.
Billy McCarthy and John Falvey broke a steering arm in their Nissan Micra on the first run over Beallaghbeama and were another crew to use SuperRally to get to the end.
Three crews: Jack O'Shea/Darragh Lynch (Austin Mini Cooper) Gary Healy/Kevin Doherty (Honda Civic) and Amy Burke/ Emel McNamara (Ford Fiesta Mark 1) all used Super Rally rules to get to the end.
HISTORIC RALLY:
Co-driver Brian Duggan was the bestplaced Kerry man in the historic rally. He guided Luke McCarthy to fourth place. Brendan O'Mahoney and Darren O'Mahoney were eighth in their unusual Lada Samara.
JUNIOR CATEGORY:
Brothers Damien Nagle and Shane Nagle were the top Kerry crew on the junior rally, taking fifth place at the end.
The unrelated Keith O'Connor and Aaron O'Connor were three places behind and happy to put their heavy Midlands Moto Rally crash behind them.
Brother and sister Mossie Costello and Megan Costello were ninth in their Civic.
CHAMPIONS: Noel O’Sullivan and Callum Devine won the Rally of the Lakes for the second time. Photo: Ger Leahy HARD LUCK: Rob Duggan and Ger Conway led the Assess Ireland Rally of the Lakes for a while but a broken steering arm ended their brilliant run. Brosnan had guaranteed Sheehy’s safe passage, a remarkable achievement when one considers that this temporary personal truce succeeded.
| By Eamonn FitzgeraldKerry had gone through a very lean spell and hadn’t won the All-Ireland since 1914. That was unthinkable in Kerry. The volatile political situation through the War of Independence meant that the 1920 All-Ireland final was not played until June 11, 1922, a time lag of almost two years. With so many players ‘unavailable’ - and not through injuries - Kerry withdrew from the 1921 Munster Championship, handing a walkover to Limerick.
In 1922 there was no Munster final with the country involved in the worst of all wars, a Civil War, and there was nothing civil about that scenario of 100 years ago. There was no Munster Championship held in 1922. Tipperary were nominated to represent Munster in the All-Ireland semi-final, but they also pulled out of the commitment and gave a walkover to Mayo. You can guess the rest. Mayo lost
the All-Ireland final to Dublin, who had the easiest of all tasks. Was it the easiest All-Ireland ever?
What would happen for 1923 was well down the list of priorities for Kerry supporters through that long winter of discontent in 1922. Spring 1923 was horrific in Kerry and all the recent centenary commemorations, particularly of March 1923 served as a reminder of events far removed from sport. The Civil War ended officially on May 24 but the bitterness lasted.
It was remarkable that Kerry even participated in the 1923 championship. Fortunately, football became the saviour for Kerry folk, but it got off to an unlikely start on July 29 in the first round of the Munster Championship.
Kerry played Limerick in Limerick and star player Con Brosnan knew that it would take something special to field a decent team. The powerful Moyvane midfielder
and John Joe Sheehy were proven Kerry stars, but they were diametrically opposite in their perceptions of what an Irish Republic meant. What’s more, Brosnan was the leader of the Free Staters and John Joe Sheehy led the republicans. Lives were at risk, brother against brother, Kerry footballer against his teammate. It took a leap of faith for Brosnan to convince his men to suspend hostilities for a few hours. For Sheehy it was an act of faith and gave him trust in the integrity of the Moyvane man. The team lined out that afternoon of July 29 in Limerick and just before the game got underway Sheehy came out of the crowd, discarded the long overcoat which had hidden the playing attire and proceeded to star in a 4-5 to 2-3 victory. Brosnan was correct in his judgement of football class. He knew the value of the dynamic Tralee Mitchels man in the forward division. Game over and Sheehy
SAM: The Kerry team who won the 1930 All-Ireland. This side featured important figures from 1923, including Con Brosnan (middle row, third from right) and John Joe Sheehy (front, fourth from right).
It was all done in the name of the game and the pride in the Kerry geansaí. The green and gold sufficed; the white would be added later. Where a flag failed to unite them, a football did.
Political tensions had not disappeared by September 2 but they had eased considerably and Kerry easily beat Cork 3-4 to 0-3 in Cork. The Munster final was not played until October 14 when Kerry beat Tipperary in Tralee and the score was Kerry 0-5 Tipperary 0-3.
No more games for the rest of 1923 so the All-Ireland semi-final of that year was not played until April 27, 1924 when Kerry beat Cavan 1-3 to 1-2.
And so to the 1923 All-Ireland final, played in Croke Park on September 28. Kerry lost narrowly to Dublin, 1-5 to 1-3. That 1923 defeat was disappointing but there was one beacon of hope. Right half
Kerry head to the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday for the 2023 Munster final. 100 years ago, in 1923, the county’s footballers travelled to Limerick for a Munster Championship game facing very different challenges to the ones they face today.
back on the Kerry team was an 18-yearold from Mangerton View. He was on his way down to St Brendan’s College when a neighbour told him that he had been picked on the Kerry team for the following Sunday. He had never kicked a ball or trained with Kerry and here he was landed into an All-Ireland final against Dublin, his first ever game for the Kingdom.
Match reports showed that he had acquitted himself so well that his future looked bright. It was. By the age of 26 he had won six All-Irelands with Kerry at right half back. No other Killarney man achieved such success. The great Paul Russell.
We are all struggling in the mud and only a few can see the stars. How he did he do it, at 12 years of age, standing on one leg when he had been diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo a leg amputation?
David Saunders eventually succumbed to his third bout of cancer and died last week at the age of 40. A packed congregation in Rathmore heard of his unbelievable courage and positivity.
Keith, David’s great friend from their undergraduate days at Mary I, delivered the eulogy. He referred to David’s cancer but insisted that it “did not define him”. It didn't cripple his hope. It didn’t quench his spirit.
"He was a rogue, the funniest person I knew. He had different accents for everyone, and his use of puns could hold the attention of a packed room,” Keith added.
But the most important thing in David's life was his wife, Castleisland native Anne Marie and their two precious children, Jack (4) and Aoibhín (2). Being a dad and a husband were his proudest achievements.
David was among the first players for Cork’s amputee soccer team and was capped 38 times for Ireland – a mark of his determination. A jersey representing his sporting career was among the symbols of his life brought to the altar at his funeral mass.
So, too, was an U10 medal representing his sporting prowess as a child, which continued even after losing his leg to cancer at such a tender age.
A schoolbook was brought to the altar by his sister Emer to represent his teaching career. He taught at Douglas/Rochestown Educate Together school. His former teammates, wearing their green Irish Amputees jerseys, provided a very symbolic and moving guard of honour as Fr Pat O’Donnell sent David on his final
Kerry LGFA continued their great form after winning the Division 1 league with a comfortable win in their first round championship match away to Waterford on Sunday last (2-8 to 0-8).
Once again it was the ageless veteran Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh who dominated this game, scoring 1-7.
Co-managers Declan Quill and Darragh
Long have been doing tremendous work with this team over the past three years and they are aiming to complete the league and championship double this season. That is a huge ask, especially with big challenges coming from Meath, Dublin and Cork, of course.
Kerry play Cork this Sunday at 2pm in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
U20 SEMI-FINAL
Kerry will play Sligo in the All-Ireland U20 semi-final in Galway tomorrow. They were porous in defence against Clare and wiped out at midfield; they were steeped in luck to snatch a draw they hardly deserved, before going on to win that semi-final after extra-time.
I‘m pretty sure manager Tomas Ó Sé was very direct with them after escaping and they turned it on in style in the Munster final against Cork, scoring two goals in the first five minutes. They won easily but will have to up their performance even more tomorrow when they face a very good Sligo team, backboned by the emergence of Summerhill College as a winning side.
At senior level, Kerry are hoping to retain their Munster title against Clare in Limerick on Sunday. That will be a stepping-stone in the defence of Sam Maguire who was welcomed with open arms this past 12 months, compensating for the times the title was lost by Kerry. Title number 39 beckons but in this new format and with so many extra games, supporters will wonder if this will suit Kerry.
I expect Clare to put it up to Kerry and they are well capable of springing a big surprise as they did in the past. But Kerry showed against Tipperary in the Fitzgerald Stadium that they are moving well. No goals but points galore against a very limited Tipperary side.
Jack O’Connor has most of his stars back from injuries, but they will have to prove themselves once more with fringe players performing well in the league. Of course, there is no David Moran who has dominated the exchanges so often at midfield. None of his successors have that same stamp of authority in those aerial challenges so, more often than not, Shane Ryan has to go with the short kickout. That can be playing with fire if the opposition close up on the Kerry defenders.
The Kerry team will be announced on this Friday evening, so one can only speculate on its composition. I think the same 15 which started against Tipperary will also start against Clare. There is good cover in the subs bench and that will be necessary in the long campaign after the Munster final.
Injuries are always a crucial variable, tough on the injured players but also on management, forced into plugging holes before the dam bursts. Everyone will be hoping that David Clifford in particular will stay injury free. You don’t want to face the big guns without Cúchulainn leading by example.

Beidh failte mór romhat ar neamh.Kerry FC are still searching for that first ever win in the League of Ireland following an unhappy Bank Holiday weekend that saw them concede eight goals in three days. Hopes were high that a visit to Treaty United on Saturday would herald good news – Kerry picked up one of their two points to date in the reverse fixture – but the hosts raced into a 3-0 lead before half-time. The Limerick side added a fourth after the break to secure their second win of 2023.
Another game in quick succession provided Kerry with an opportunity to bounce back but unfortunately Monday’s match against Cobh Ramblers also ended in defeat. The Cork outfit took the lead after
just four minutes through Wilson Waweru and further goals by Tiernan O’Brien McAllister, Charlie Lyons and Liam Kervick gave them a four-goal cushion.
A late consolation goal by former Killarney Celtic player Ryan Kelliher left the scoreline reading 4-1 at the final whistle. The First Division newcomers are now nine points adrift of second-from-bottom Longford Town, with a record of P12 W0 D2 L10.
Billy Dennehy’s team will be hoping for better luck tonight when they host Longford at home in Tralee (7.45pm). Tickets were still available as this publication went to print on Thursday. Visit kerryfc. com/tickets for more information.

Super Bowl LVII was the most-watched US telecast of all-time, according to new figures that were released on Tuesday. National TV measurement company Nielsen informed CNN that in updated data, it found that 115.1 million viewers tuned in on February 12 to watch the Kansas City Chiefs come back and beat the Philadelphia Eagles.
The total includes those watching the Super Bowl LVII across Fox, Fox Deportes and digital streaming services, according to a Nielsen source.
In the top 10 US telecasts of all time according to Nielsen records, the first nine are made up of Super Bowl broadcasts. The only non-Super Bowl to feature on the top 10 is the M*A*S*H series finale in 1983 which totalled 105.9 million viewers. For comparison, the 2022 FIFA
World Cup final was watched by an estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide. Kerry’s 2022 All-Ireland final victory over Galway was viewed by around 862,000 people.
John 'The Gorilla' Ryder will take on Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez for the super-middleweight crown on Saturday night as he bids to become England's first undisputed male champion in the four-belt era. Fighting in Alvarez's home city of Guadalajara, Mexico, a win for Ryder would go down as the greatest overseas victory for a British fighter and a colossal shock in boxing history.
The odds are stacked against the 34-year-old underdog. Alvarez is the face of boxing: a four-weight champion who is fighting on home soil for the first time in 12 years. But Ryder insists he will not be overawed by the occasion and is manifesting an upset.
"Every night I lay there, sit there, visualise it - speaking it into existence," he told BBC Sport. "It would be an amazing feeling. Especially being in his hometown at such a prestigious event.”
The fight will be shown on DAZN.

U13 BOYS PREMIER: Ballyhar Dynamos
2 MEK Galaxy 2. A great game of football against our neighbours in Murt Scot Park ended honours even. MEK started the strongest and were 1 up after 6 minutes a free by Breandan Allman caused havoc in the Ballyhar area and the ball ended up
in the net. Dara Tangney came close to getting a second with a great run through the Ballyhar defence. Then Jamie Murphy was put clear through but just missed the target. Our second came on 26 mins when Cade Jameson finished a fine move. HT 0-2 MEK. The second half saw Ballyhar step up the pressure and 5 minutes in got one back. Game on. Ballyhar kept the pressure on, but our defence was holding out until with 10 minutes left the home team got an equaliser. Shortly afterwards Ballyhar hit the crossbar but as the game finished 2-2 was a fair result. Best for MEK were Cade Jameson, Dara Tangney and Ryan Van der Merwe but man of the match goes to Breandan Allman who defended brilliantly. Thanks to our friends in Ballyhar for a great game.
LADIES FOOTBALL UPDATE: The Legion U12 girls started off their season on a busy Wednesday in Direen with a friendly against our neighbours Dr. Crokes. The teams were evenly matched, and it was great to see our Legion girls perform well in their first outing of the 2023 season. Both the girls and coaches benefited from the match with the game again refereed by the busy and obliging Oisin Fleming. A big thank you to Dr Crokes for coming to Direen for what was a sporting game. On a perfect Monday evening for football, the U14 girls were in action against Currow in Direen. This Division 5 clash started brightly with scores at both ends and this pattern was to continue until the final whistle. On a perfect sod, both sides made use of the space to serve up a very open and fast paced contest. Two points separated the evenly matched sides in the end with Currow victorious on a 5-5 to 4-6 scoreline. The Minor girls travelled to Kilcummin for the opening game in Division 3 of the County League. They started brightly and hit the opening four points, but Kilcummin got into their stride and soon dominated the rest of the half to lead. 2-4 to 0-6 at the interval. In the second half Kilcummin maintained the competitiveness, keeping the scoreboard ticking over but a strong Legion rearguard kept Kilcummin at bay. And in the process, they combined for three fantastic goals at just the right time to have their noses in front in the end. Final Score. Legion 3-12 Kilcummin 2-13.
DONAL CURTIN LADIES CUP: The Legion Ladies battled hard in the second half, hitting the woodwork on three occasions with Ellen Coffey eventually finding the onion sack. Castleisland Desmonds 3-10 Legion 1-4.
FIXTURES: In Round 5 of the Credit Union SFL, we fortunately secured our second win after a 6-point defeat over Castleisland Desmonds. After a slow start against the breeze in the first half we saw ourselves 2 points down facing in to the second half. It was with thanks to a goal
in the opening few minutes of the second half that saw us to take the lead for the first time in the game. With an extra man playing to our advantage after Castleisland Desmonds were down to 14 men after one of their men was shown a second yellow, the final score was Spa 02-13 Castleisland Desmonds 1-10. In the next round of this competition, we will play Milltown at home in two weeks' time.
LGFA: Spa welcomed Corca Dhuibhne to Killarney last Sunday for Round 3 in Division 1 of the Donal Curtin Cup. Spa were against the wind to begin with and played well to finish the first half just two points behind with a score of 3-4 to 3-6 to the visitors. Spa had a great start to the second half and opened with a goal and dominated for the 3rd quarter, but Corca Dhuibhne never gave up and continued to kick for points at every opportunity which led to a very exciting finish with Spa two points up with three minutes to go. Corca Dhuibhne threw everything at Spa and were rewarded with a goal in the final minutes to go one point ahead. Spa was on a counterattack but unfortunately ran out of time as the ref blew the final whistle. Spa were very unlucky to come away without at least a draw but now look forward to travelling away in two weeks' time to play Southern Gaels.
LOTTO: Next week’s draw will be for a jackpot of €7,000.
SENIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Dr Crokes
0-14 Ballymac 3-9. Our senior side suffered their first defect of the year last Sunday in Round 5 of the County League. The adage of goals win games was certainly to the fore and ultimately the difference between the sides. Ballymac started the stronger and lead 1-2 to no score after 5 minutes. We did however settle into the game and trailed by 2 points at the short whistle. Midway through the second half we draw level but following missed scoring opportunities conceded our second goal. Congratulations to Shay O’Meara, Sean Fitzgerald, Charlie Keating and Alex Hennigan, all St. Brendan’s students, on making their first starts for our senior team. Next up is Austin Stacks in Connolly Park next Saturday night.
U15 LEAGUE: Dr Crokes 2-16 Legion 2-7. Our U15s travelled to Killarney Legion on Wednesday last where they had a great win over our local rivals. It was a great team performance full of skill and courage and determination.
LGFA: Our U12 girls travelled to Direen last Wednesday to play Legion in a pre-season challenge. It was a great workout for our girls as we had a great game with all of the squad involved. We look forward to the season ahead.
GO GAMES: Our two U11 teams travelled to Kenmare last week where they both put on a fantastic display of football. All the boys hard work is really showing in each of their performances. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves.
Our U9s travelled to Glenflesk last week where they put their skills in to practice and enjoyed the evening.
ACADEMY: Our academy continues every Saturday.

SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE: Div 3 - Rd
5 - Annascaul 0-22 Fossa 3-17. Fossa got back to winning ways, coming out on top in what was probably the best game of the county league so far. Normally when you concede 22 points you don’t expect to come out on top, but Fossa gave a masterclass of point kicking and scoring 3-14 from play. Long range points by Jason Hickson of Annascaul and Captain Emmett O’Shea for Fossa were a joy to watch. Another powerful performance from Matt Rennie in the middle and goals from Tadgh O’Shea, Harry Kelly and Eoin Talbot were ultimately the difference. Fossa are now in second place in the Division and are home to Knocknagoshel in two weeks’ time.
SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE: Div 6 - Rd
5 - Fossa B 2-10 Firies B 2-14. In a highly entertaining game, Fossa just came up short, Darren Cronin with 2-5 and an excellent defensive performance by Mark Donnellan was not enough to hold out Firies B.

CREDIT UNION CO LEAGUE: Division 1. Our senior team manufactured an amazing comeback to defeat Kerins O’Rahillys in Tralee last Saturday and claim two points that sees us top the Division facing into a two-week break. Trailing by nine points with 15 minutes remaining a Shane McSweeney goal ignited the team after what had been a lack lustre performance up till then. Five points and a further goal from Philip O’Leary without reply saw us run out winners by two points and sent our supporters home with a smile on their faces and delighted with the character shown by the players. Next up is an away fixture against Gneeveguilla in two weeks.
CO LEAGUE DIV 6: Kilcummin B 2-24 Churchill B 1-10. A great free flowing performance saw our young team overcome Churchill and run out easy winners. Goals from Cian Lynch and Sean Moynihan supplemented some fine point- taking from our forwards. Our defence was solid throughout with midfield in control also, underlining the improvement of the players and highlighting the work being done by the mentors. It also underlines the value of having entered a team in the league. Team: Liam Kerrisk, Oran Dwyer, James Williams, Darragh Brosnan, Andy Lowing, Oisin O’Leary, Jack Fogarty, Gearoid Kerins, Colm Kelleher, Cian Lynch, Mikey O’Shea, Evan Murphy, John Devane, Paudie Moynihan, Darren Lehane.
