Racist stickers now removed A local hotel worker has branded xenophobic stickers - stuck to approximately 20 lamp posts along the Muckross Road - as “vile” and “disgusting” this week. | By Michelle Crean

Gearoid Murphy, Deputy General Manager at the Riverside Hotel, was alerted to the notebook sized stickers depicting an image of five non-nationals resembling Muslims, Asians and Romanians, with a sign pointing towards the Convention Centre brandishing the words ‘YOU’LL NEVER BE IRISH’ – after two foreign members of staff were left visibly upset when he called into work on Tuesday morning.

“I wanted to do some-thing, so I immediately rang the Gardai and another Manager rang the Council,” Gearoid told the Killarney Advertiser.

However, he says coming to work at 2.30pm for his shift, the stickers were still there from Flesk Bridge down to the turnoff at Woodlawn, and he got angry.

“I ripped a few of them off. The Council later removed the rest. I think we do need to make a massive deal out of this.

I’ve never seen anything like this happen before. Someone printed these and they

are professional.”

He added that he believes this is a once off and does not represent the people of Killarney.

“Killarney is the most welcoming and diverse town in the country. It has never happened before. I think it needs to be made a major issue so that it doesn’t become common place.”

Killarney Gardai are also appealing to the public for information on the incident.

“We are appealing to anyone who may know something to let us know,” a Garda spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser.

“Someone must know something. They were put up in a number of places and someone may have witnessed that or

know where they were printed.”

Mayor of Kerry, Niall Kelleher, condemned the incident saying he is disgusted and enraged.

“Stickers placed on poles in public areas are racist and xenophobic, and in my opinion, they represent an incitement to hatred,” he said.

“They have no place and are not welcome in our town or in our communities.

I call on all public representatives to denounce this action by cowardly, faceless individuals and I call on the Gardaí to do everything within their power to fully investigate this act and to bring the culprit(s) to justice.”

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce also voiced their disgust saying they condemn the act in the strongest possible terms.

“Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the mindless and completely unacceptable actions of whoever was responsible for placing racist, vulgar and pitiful slogans in a public area, under the cover of darkness, on Tuesday morning,” they said.

“Such dreadful behaviour has no place in the progressive and successful town of Killarney where there is a warm, genuine and universal welcome for everybody.

We appreciate the enormous contribution made by people from overseas, over several decades, who come to live and work alongside us and become our neighbours, friends and colleagues and our children’s friends, classmates and teammates. The Chamber’s steadfast view is that there must be absolutely no tolerance for discrimination, prejudice, insult or antagonism directed at anybody because they are of a different race or ethnicity.”

€500k Killarney winner comes forward | By Michelle Crean A lucky EuroMillions Plus winner who bagged €500,000 in Tuesday night’s €190 million Euromillions draw - has made contact with Lotto HQ to collect their winnings.

The ecstatic winner, who bought their Quick Pick ticket in the Centra Store on the Rock Road on Monday, rang the Dublin office first thing yesterday morning (Thursday), Lotto HQ confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser.

In total there were three winners of the Plus top prize of €500,000. The other two tickets were sold in Dublin and Meath.

Staff at the Killarney shop were cele-

brating on Tuesday when news reached them that they sold a winning ticket. And it’s not the first time that the Centra shop sold a winner as its sister shop across the road, Centra at The Reeks Gateway, sold a ticket for the same amount just 14 months ago, explained store Manager Ciaran Culloty.

“We have two shops and we sold a ticket at The Reeks for the same amount last year,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

“It’s amazing that both shops had a winner for the same amount.”

And he said when news reached them on Tuesday – they got extremely excited as at first they thought their own staff syndicate had won the cash.

Killarney retains Tidy Towns gold medal The 500 volunteers who help keep Killarney tidy were praised

by Tidy Towns judges this week following the announcement on Monday that the town had retained its gold medal status. | By Sean Moriarty Killarney scored 342 marks at the 2019 annual SuperValu TidyTowns awards ceremony in the Helix, Dublin - eight up on last year, but 136 marks off the maximum of 470. Killarney scored best in the litter and tidiness category, with 61 points out of a maximum of 90.

“We were very impressed with Killarney, the many fine buildings, including hotels, offices and shops were a delight and everywhere is looking so well,” said the judging panel. “We admired the improvement works completed at the car/ bus park at Rock Road, the refurbishment of public conveniences at High Street and the ploughing sculpture.”

Judges make decisions across eight categories including Tidiness and Litter Control; Public Places, Green Spaces and Landscaping.

“The slogan ‘Killarney Looking Good’ is very apt and we congratulate you on your success in the campaign against litter,“ said the report. “The strategies of regular and seasonal litter clean-ups is working well; it is great to see the combined efforts of Council employees and volunteers working together and achieving so much. It is interesting to see the statistics for bags of litter and numbers of volun-

teers who have worked on this campaign over the years.”

A major study of behaviour and attitudes of shoppers, business owners’ perceptions, footfall and land use is to be conducted, with the results published in early 2020.

The aim of the programme is to raise awareness, understanding and appreciation of the critical role that town centres play and the wide-ranging impacts that their vitality and viability have on overall socio-economic, environmental and cultural growth and development and on quality of life for citizens and visitors alike.

A number of surveys will be conducted in the town centre as part of transdisciplinary research between the Heritage Council, Kerry County Council, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and the IT Tralee, to fully understand the critical role that town centres play and the impact they have on the quality of life for citizens and

visitors.

Wednesday lunchtime, Ali Harvey, Manager of the Heritage Council’s National Planning & Regeneration Programmes, and Martha Farrell, Marketing Lecturer in the School of Business, Humanities and Computing at the Institute of Technology, Tralee made a presentation at the monthly Chamber of Commerce lunch which was held in the Great Southern Killarney.

There, both explained the importance of the health check and its benefits to Killarney town as the findings will inform strategies for the future development of the town.

From October to December students from the IT, Tralee will conduct the surveys, Martha explained.

“We will need your support on this,” she said. "I would appeal to you take the questionnaire from the students and fill it out, please support them.”

HIGH STANDARDS

Eileen O’Donoghue, Killarney Municipal District Council Officer, congratulated all those involved in achieving such high standards.

“There is a great sense of community in Killarney seen in the voluntary effort put in, week in week out. It is thanks to the co-operation and the coming together of so many different groups, the volunteers, the Chamber of Commerce and the local authority that the town has seen an increase in eight points,” she said.

Killarney Looking Good Chairperson Yvonne Quill also thanked volunteers.

“We would like to thank everyone in Team Killarney, the volunteers who go out Monday and Wednesday nights for the organised clean-ups and those that go out on an ongoing basis in their own time,” she said.

Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Niall Kelleher, attended the awards ceremony in the Helix Dublin on Monday.

"Credit is due to the Killarney Looking Good Committee, Council staff and volunteers in Killarney. It's a great achievement to increase points in all categories in this year's competition, it's a testament to the hard work and proved it pays off.”

Gardai plan clamp down on illegal cycling and parking

Killarney Gardaí are clamping down on cyclists and drivers illegally using footpaths.

As a result of an increasing number of complaints from the public Gardai have already fined several cyclists for cycling on footpaths.

They will also clampdown on motorists that park on footpaths obstructing wheelchairs and pushchairs.

“Many of the complaints relate to cyclists forcing pedestrians onto the road-

way,” said Sergeant Dermot O’Connell.

“We are concentrating on the town centre, Park Road, Rock Road and the East Avenue Road.”

Last week, the Killarney Advertiser ran a story highlighting issues wheelchair users face as a result of illegally parked vehicles.

Plans for access to the walkway in Killarney National Park were on the long finger due to on-going issues with land purchases. The new road will allow better access to O’Sullivan’s Cascade, often considered as one of Killarney’s hidden gems.

The Council granted planning permission for the 9km walkway three years ago.

This week the NPWS confirmed that the lands had been acquired and that work on the Tomies Mountain section could start early next year.

Plans for the remaining sections of the walkway are on the long-finger however, as there are still a few land ownership issues to be confirmed.

Local independent councillor Brendan Cronin has been a long-time advocate of the walkway and Greenways in general.

“This a new asset to our tourism bow,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

Tomies Wood is currently accessible by a narrow single-track road and there’s no proper parking facilities there. The new development will allow parking for

around for between 20 and 25 cars.

Cllr Cronin confirmed that the plans to create the full 9km walkway remain on track but are dependent on land acquisitions.

Annual pet blessing at the Friary | By Sean Moriarty The Franciscan Friary will celebrate the Feast of St Francis with the annual blessing of pets at the Friary at 3pm on Sunday.

St Francis is the patron Saint of Animals and his feast day falls on October 4 (today). Every year the Friars mark the occasion with their annual pet blessing which

always happens on the Sunday closest to the feast day.

“In keeping with the ethos of St Francis, Killarney will open its heart to all creatures great and small on Sunday. The Franciscan Friary will be a flurry of activity for the annual blessing of the animals outside the church,” Friary Administrator, Anne Marie O’Leary, told the Killarney Advertiser.

A case of high treason at the International Hotel The centenary of one of the most unusual acts of historical importance to Killarney is set to be re-enacted in the new Cultural Centre next weekend. | By Sean Moriarty Next Thursday (October 10) will mark the centenary of Archdeacon Thomas Joseph O’Donnell’s visit to the hotel.

The Tasmanian was appointed Chaplain to the 11th Battalion on the Western Front and in late 1919 he was granted leave to visit relatives and friends in Ireland, including a cousin in Killarney.

On October 10 O’Donnell was dining in the International Hotel in Killarney, engaged in animated conversation with William Marsh, a slightly deaf Northern Unionist.

It was later alleged by JS Chambers, an off duty officer of the King’s Liverpool Regiment, dining at a nearby table, that O’Donnell made seditious remarks about the King and the British.

The incident was reported and two days later O’Donnell was arrested under a charge of speaking disloyally in

Killarney against the King and the Empire. O'Donnell was escorted to London where he spent time in the Tower of London in the very same cell occupied

by Roger Casement three years earlier. The priest faced a trial in London’s Guild Hall but was acquitted following a testimony by International Hotel’s manager Georgina Bennett.

O'Donnell sued the British Government and such was the notoriety of the whole matter by this time, parliamentary questions were raised on a number of occasions in the House of Commons, and these were fielded by none other than Winston Churchill, the then Secretary of War and the Armed Forces.

“Rich in history, the walls of the International hold some secrets and could tell some stories!,” General Manager, Tracy Coyne, told the Killarney Advertiser.

“It is with great pride that we are commemorating the centenary of a historic event that happened in the dining room of the International Hotel in October 1919, which caused an international diplomatic incident during World War 1.”

The events are of much interest to historians, but also to those old Killarney families who remember stories of war and espionage passed from elder generations, she added.

“One of the central figures in this tale of treason and accusations was the then manager of the International Hotel, a Miss Georgina Bennett of Borrisoleigh, County Tipperary, who gave evidence in London’s Guild Hall. In fact, Miss Bennett’s evidence was the turning point in the whole affair, changing the outcome of what would surely otherwise have been the imprisonment

These historical moments from the International Hotel will be played out in the Cultural Centre on Saturday next (October 12), through a historical reading and a re-enactment by members of the Tipperary War of Independence Tours historical society.

Planning permission submitted for new community hospital | By Sean Moriarty Killarney’s much-awaited new community hospital has taken another step towards reality after Cork Kerry Community Healthcare confirmed that planning permission for a new 130bed Community Nursing Unit has been submitted to Kerry County Council.

This development, which will built on the grounds of St Finan’s Hospital, will replace the current St Columbanus Home and the District Hospital (short stay unit).

It will be made up of four 25-bed units and a 30-bed dementia unit. The new facility will be all ensuite single room accommodation.

“This project is a significant milestone in Cork Kerry Community Healthcare’s plans for the replacement of outdated community hospital buildings across

Kerry and Cork,” a Cork Kerry Community Healthcare spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser.

“It is hoped that once construction commences that it will be completed within a period of 24 months following which the residents will move from St Columbanus Home and new residents can be admitted. This site is adjacent to good road networks and Killarney town, it is in a tranquil and peaceful setting.”

Each of the four units will have a sitting room, a sun room, a quiet room, a visitor’s room and an activities room, so there is ample space for communal or private activities.

Bedrooms will be single room accommodation. There will be ample outdoor space in the form of secure landscaped gardens. The new CNU will comply with all HIQA standards and HSE policies in regard to space, privacy and dignity in a new state-ofthe-art facility.

Gardai warn of phone scam | By Michelle Crean Killarney Gardaí are advising the public to beware of a phone call scam which is currently doing the rounds.

Members of the public are being duped via a person purporting to be from telecommunications provider Eir. The caller will suggest that there is an issue with the broadband connection and ask the caller to log onto their computer and allow the caller remote access to their computer so they can fix the issue.

The caller will ask for a 16 digit visa card

number stating there will be a €2 delivery charge for a new broadband router that will resolve the issue. The victim’s account will then be accessed and any funds will be cleared out of the account.

“Gardaí want to reiterate the message that under no circumstances should bank details or card details be provided over the phone,” Nigel Hennessy, Detective Garda from Killarney Garda Station told the Killarney Advertiser.

“Do not allow any caller to access your personal computer and members of the public are advised to end the call if in any doubt and contact the particular company back and seek clarification.”

Tidy Towns report highly critical of the lack of trees

Only Killarney town was praised for looking after its trees, they said, which is true because the hatred and spite towards trees even in rural areas just outside Killarney has to be witnessed to be believed. There is a whole thesis in the origins of such spite.

Tralee got an awful doing with judges “horrified” at what passes for tree pruning in the county capital.

The mature trees in front of the Dominican Church at Day Place were “simply beheaded” at approximately six to eight metres high.

“Why was this done? It looks awful and sends out a very bad message,” they said.

Trees in Tralee were being choked to death with cement rings around their roots and Tralee had even got it wrong with the new Hornbeams on the Mall, stuffing them into containers when they should have been planted into the ground.

This year’s judges didn’t spare Dingle either, which is no harm because Dingle long used to a few “stracawlers” trying to learn Gaeilge, and now overrun with tourists, has developed a massive sense of “eiri in airde” and deludes itself it is some kind of world capital in music, food and fish and even environmental matters!

Well, there is one thing sure, there is

nothing special about the way Dingle doesn’t look after its trees.

Dingle too got an awful doing from this year’s judges who said it was “disappointing” there wasn’t a tree on the new inner road; there was nothing in the harbour, except a few trees, and the town badly needed a tree plan instead of grabbing a few trees and sticking them down here and there.

LACK OF TREES

Killarney understood trees well, the judges said, but the report was highly critical of the lack of trees and landscaping in the new cemetery. To be fair to the Council, they have confirmed to this column they will be doing further landscaping and planting of trees at the new Killarney Burial Ground at Knockeenduff.

But did anyone else who read the report online, spot the gentle sarcasm in the remarks about all the Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty memorabilia that has been erected everywhere in recent times?

Now, I am glad they said it, because I have long been tempted to drop a hint that there may be a bit too much of the stuff and I don’t want to be chased out of town for saying so. I am familiar with a town in France called Richelieu. It is called after the great cardinal, a major architect of modern France, and Europe. He hailed from there, built a huge palace there and actually built the town and diverted the road to Bordeaux so the town would benefit from the road taxes. St Vincent de Paul set up shop there at the Cardinal’s invitation.

There is about one monument to St Vincent. And as for the great cardinal, there are one or two murals and they are humorous. There is one statue and he is remembered in the park itself.

The Monsignor did a lot, and I am not taking at all from him and his good work.

And he has distinguished relatives. But do we really need to cover the town in his memory such that visitors remark ironically about it?

Was the reaction too strong?

Those stickers. Does anyone else think the reaction of the town’s who’s who to a few stickers, offensive as they were, was a bit strong?

Perhaps too strong? In essence these things are the sort of stuff you would see on the front pages of satirical magazines like Charlie Hebdo - to be laughed off and ignored in a sticks and stones sort of attitude, and not a case of protesting too much, which as old Shakespeare might say raises questions.

And the fact is, but for the mayor and the media attention, which by and large was on foot of the very strong statements by both the mayor and issued on behalf of the Killarney Chamber, very few people would have actually known about these cartoons.

I rang KASI, the very admirable Killarney body dealing with asylum seekers and the very groups targeted in the cartoons. She was terribly disappointed, as were most people. But I just think we should not lose our sense of perspective here.

Mayor Niall Kelleher is clearly committed to stomping out “racism” by stamping on the head of the snake in a strong and robust manner. A bit of the St Patrick about him, let’s hope he does not get the crozier anytime soon.

We need more public transport in rural Ireland The oral hearing, long awaited, into the South Kerry Greenway should throw up food for thought.

It will surely reveal just why people are objecting - and around 40 objectors are listed - as well as what it is about greenway and other processes in Kerry that takes them so long to get over the line. But while greenways are the manna from Heaven of 2019, and quiet spaces for cyclists and motorists, I have a suspicion that in 20 years-time the big debate will be turning them back into trainways. The car industry can’t keep

going as it is, for climate as well as cost reasons. Cars are too costly and dirty and there are too many of them. What we need is more public transport in rural Ireland. Can you imagine the excitement and sheer pleasure of going by tram to Cahersiveen?

All over Europe there will be moves to turn these greenways back into public railways and the first steps will have been taken in buying back the parcels of land for public routes.

By the way, why has the Fossa Greenway stalled? A track had been laid from the new line road, or Gap road,

all the way down to the lake shore at Lakeview/Lismongane, but the thing is all greened over now. And what about Tomies at the upper end of the Lough Leane Loop?

I broached the subject with one of the foremost greenway people in Killarney, Councillor Brendan Cronin who has rarely left the Killarney loop off the agenda.

The NPWS had just told Cllr Cronin the contract for the new, purpose-built Tomies Wood access route was going out to tender for an independent con-

tractor. Planning is finalised as is land purchase agreements and the new road and car park properly fenced off is to be a single contract for design, project management and construction. Even better news is it is likely it will get underway in 2020. As for the rest of the loop, it is all a bit piecemeal and no categoric design has yet been produced. There is a bit of horse trading with road improvements as well as land ownership so it will be some time yet before the whole loop is finalised, but at least the Tomies side of thing is underway.

Killarney tourism trendsetter laid to rest

Fundraiser for new sports hall in Listry

Listry GAA is hoping for one final push in an effort to reach its €100,000 fundraising target so the club can build a new sports hall alongside its playing pitches. | By Sean Moriarty The club are around €30,000 short of their target so they have decided to run a Night at the Dogs Fundraiser at Kingdom Greyhound Stadium on November 9.

The club is currently enjoying a massive juvenile membership and now boasts nearly 120 under age players. Looking ahead, the mid-Kerry club wants to build a legacy for future generations so has set about the construction of a new indoor

playing centre.

“Our under-age is the biggest we have seen in years,” Denis Murphy, Fundraising Committee Chairperson, told the Killarney Advertiser. “This being Ireland, in another few weeks it will be impossible to play outside until next March so this will allow us maintain interest all year round.”

Mrs Lynch, who was 92, died on Tuesday.

For close on 50 years she ran Lynch’s Farmhouse in Kilcummin, one of the first bed and breakfast style tourist accommodation sites outside the town of Killarney.

She started her thriving business in 1967, at a time when tourism in Killarney was growing in popularity but the town did not have as many hotels as it does now.

Tourism officials in the town put out a call to arms in an effort to get home owners from outside the centre to open their houses to passing tourists. Encouraged by a grant to install a telephone, Kathleen opened her first three-bedroom guesthouse in 1967.

“It was no trouble to her, she opened the guesthouse and it took off from there,” her daughter Carmel told the Killarney Advertiser. “She thrived on it. She was up early every morning baking and sorting out rooms, and when she was finished she was off down the fields with my father.”

Kathleen and her husband John opened up their farm to their many guests. For some it was their first experience of seeing a cow being milked. John offered horse and donkey rides to their guests, showing they were well ahead of their time when it came customer service.

Business was so good they were able to construct a purpose built guesthouse in 1973.

Such was the level of service, guests came back year after year and Kathleen built life-long friendships from all over the world.

“People came back all the time, they would bring presents and the excitement was like someone coming home from America,” added Carmel.

Famous people that stayed at the farmhouse included a first-cousin of US President JF Kennedy.

“She was a great worker,” added Carmel.

“When we were young we were never brought to town. Someone had to stay at home at all times in case the phone rang and we missed a booking.”

When Lynch’s Farmhouse first opened Kathleen dealt with Mrs Meehan in the Killarney Tourist office.

“She used keep a big book with all the bookings in it and if you ever got it wrong Mrs Meehan would take the head off you.”

Kathleen Lynch was laid to rest yesterday (Thursday) in Aghadoe Cemetery.

She was predeceased by her husband John and is sadly missed by her four children: Eileen, Maura, Noel and Carmel, son-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and many friends.

Mary retires after 40 years Mary Healy said a final farewell to Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra in September after 40 years teaching.

She began her teaching career in Kenmare Vocational School before moving to Killorglin Vocational School.

Mary then moved to Rathmore Vocational School where she spent 10 years before the Vocational School in Rathmore and St Mary’s Secondary School amalgamated to form Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra.

It was there she ended her teaching career where she taught French and

Maths. She held the position of Year Head for many years and was well respected in this role by staff and students.

“Staff members gathered with her family to honour her years of teaching at a farewell function in the Great Southern Hotel, Killarney,” Vice-Principal, Maria Hanrahan, told the Killarney Advertiser.

“Mary was a very valued member of our staff, known for her passion, hard work and dedication to her students. She will be missed but we wish her well and thank her for her many years of service.”

Killarney Musical Society to launch 2020 production | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Musical Society has selected ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ as its 2020 production for special reasons.

This year’s show, which takes place on February 25 to 27 at the INEC, will mark the society’s 35th production, but it will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of its last show at the now defunct Áras Phádraig on Lewis Road.

“The sooner they bring that back the better,” Irene Hurley, KMS Chair, told the Killarney Advertiser.

But, like everything the show must go on and KMS will launch this year’s production at the Dromhall Hotel next Wednesday night (October 9) at 9pm, and they are looking for cast members and supporting staff to help stage the event.

“It is a fantastic show, full of colour, music and high energy,” she added. “We need to fill a lot of men’s roles as we have Joseph and all his brothers, afterall Joseph has a lot of brothers. Call in to see us at our launch night, but don't just think we are looking for men, everyone is welcome. We will be delighted to welcome you all and answer any questions.”

A tractor that once belonged to the Great Southern Hotel returned to its spiritual home for the first time in 12 years this week. | By Sean Moriarty The 1979 Ford 2600 was used by the Killarney Great Southern Hotel between 1979 to 2007. It was a familiar sight around the streets of Killarney during this time as it was used to transport furniture and other equipment between the hotel and its now closed sister premises the Torc Great Southern Hotel on Park Road with well-known local gardener Con Lyne behind the wheel.

The tractor is now owned by Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club, and after a restoration project by the club it is being raffled to raise funds for Meningitis Ireland and the Killarney Micro Track Project.

When the hotel ownership changed hands in 2007 the tractor was sold to a vintage collector near Tralee.

The club bought it back off the collector earlier this year and it is now the centrepiece of its annual fundraising raffle.

Over the years the club has raffled other tractors and a Land Rover to raise funds for local causes.

Earlier this week the club returned the

tractor to the GSH. It brought back memories for PRO Tom Leslie who worked as the hotel’s leisure centre manager for 16 years.

“This is close to my heart,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I would have seen that tractor working every day for 16 years. It is well-known around Killarney as back then hotels would share tables and furniture, depending on who was hosting a big event, and the tractor would be seen around town pulling trailers of furniture. It also transported kegs of beer between the Great Southern and the Torc.”

The club has three more prizes as part of the fundraising raffle; second prize: Bed & Breakfast and an evening meal at the five-star Killarney Park Hotel, third prize: €400 voucher from Killarney Oils, and fourth prize: a two night pitch at Beech Grove Caravan and Camping Park, Killarney.

Tickets can be purchased from www. killarneyvintage.com or directly from the beneficiaries and are €10 each. The draw will take place on November 16 at the Innisfallen Hotel in Fossa.

A FISHY TAIL: Local angler Ciaran Gallagher landed a beautiful 2.25lb brown trout at the iconic Eagles Nest on Killarney's Upper Lake. Measuring 46cm the fish took a Mallard & Claret fly. The fish was examined under the microscope in Killarney Community College and was estimated to be five-years-old. This is Ciaran's best Killarney trout and he is now considering a job with Killarney tourism promoting angling in the area such was the response to his catch in full view of tourists!

How to lower blood pressure High blood pressure, also known as Hypertension, is a major cause of stroke and heart attacks. It is the force of blood against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood.

You can have it for years without knowing it and during this time it can damage your heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of your body.

Blood pressure (BP) does not stay the same all the time - it lowers as we sleep and rises when we wake. It also rises when we are excited, nervous, active or stressed! It is very often without symptoms so it is important to have your blood pressure checked routinely, even when you are feeling fine.

Blood pressure can rise with age, but does not have to be a routine part of ageing. Some people may be able to control BP with lifestyle changes alone while others may not. If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure together with your GP and a healthy lifestyle you can keep it at an acceptable level and reduce the risk of related health problems.

If there is a family history of blood pressure this may raise your risk of develop-

ing it and may require GP supervision. If you are recommended medication you should also keep up your improved lifestyle changes, all together this will help you control it.

Some supplements which may help manage high blood pressure are: Magnesium and calcium: Take approx., 500mg of each daily.

Eamon Kelly weekend in Gneeveguilla The annual Eamon Kelly Weekend to celebrate the famous storyteller, or seanchai, will be held in Gneeveguilla, this weekend.

Local schoolchildren are being encouraged to continue with the storytelling tradition in Kelly’s native Sliabh Luachra, which is best known for its poets and its rich store of traditional music, song and dance.

Kelly, who was born in Gullane, Gneeveguilla in 1914 and died in 2001, drew from the areas lore for many of his stories which were largely based on rural life in the final quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century.

The weekend programme, based in Teach Failte, Gneeveguilla, is supported by the local history society, Cumann Luachra.

“As well as remembering Eamon Kelly, the aim of the weekend is to encourage local talent and achievements and to promote storytelling and the cultural heritage of Sliabh Luachra,” Cormac Collins, organising committee Chairman, said.

Killarney-based seanchai and entertainer Ray O’Sullivan will conduct storytelling workshops for children between

11am and 1pm tomorrow (Saturday).

Tomorrow night at 8.15pm, there will be music, song, dance and storytelling, in Teach Failte, with Ray O’Sullivan as MC. On Sunday, Donal Hickey, editor of the Sliabh Luachra Journal, will guide a tour of some important historical sites in the area. A free bus is being provided and those taking part are asked to assemble at the Eamon Kelly monument in Gneeveguilla village at 11am. All welcome.

Round Ireland kayak trip recalled in book

| By Sean Moriarty The epic journey of two local men who kayaked around Ireland 28 years ago was recalled at a book launch in Killarney Racecourse last Saturday evening.

Back in 1991, Timmy Flavin and his friend Donal Dowd, circumnavigated Ireland in a pair of kayaks. The book, ‘At the Water’s Edge’, tells their story in Timmy’s words.

Timmy, from Tiernaboul and his friend were life-long adventure sports enthusiasts. They both worked at the outdoor education centre at Cappanalea and had previously kayaked from Northern Ireland to Scotland.

Timmy documented their around Ireland journey in his diary. He passed away four

years ago but his wife Brid found it recently while looking for something else.

“I found the diary recently, it is so well written,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.

“It is fascinating. I asked a few friends if it should be published and everyone said yes. A lot of people say it is a history lesson, but I think it is more of a geography lesson.

“They were into adventure sports before any one, some people want to climb Everest, Timmy wanted to kayak around Ireland, and of all the sports he was into sea-kayaking was his favourite.”

The book is for sale in Daly’s SuperValu, Park Road and Bricin on High Street. All profits will go to the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry (UHK) and Valentia Lifeboat.

Tractor run raises over €12k A unique mid winter event held for the past two years in Faha Killarney has raised over €12,104 for Pieta House in Kerry.

The event is the brainchild of Robert Giles who along with his family and friends from Faha in Killarney organise a Darkness Into Light Tractor Run in memory of his uncle Richard Giles, who sadly died in 2015 at the age of 54. With over 250 tractors driving through the night into the

dawn it's one of very few, if any, that happens in the middle of the night. This year they have plans to use a drone to film the event and with the backdrop dawn breaking in one of the most beautiful places in Ireland it's going to be spectacular. Robert is looking forward to anther successful event next December and he would like to especially thank all of his family, the local volunteers, Sean O'Mahony and all the staff of the Faha Court, Charlie Coakley and local Gardai.

Adventure Expo & Quest 2020 The Quest Killarney adventure race expo is being held in the INEC in the Gleneagle Hotel on Friday October 11th from 5.00pm – 9.00pm. This is a must-see event with major exhibitors such as O’Sullivan Cycles present. Even if you’re not taking part in the adventure race, come on down to see the expo, we’ll be launching all our events for 2020 over the weekend.

Spectators and supporters Spectators are welcome to come out to the Gleneagle Hotel to encourage competitors as they cross the finish line.

In addition, there will be music, food and family entertainment.

Come along and be part of the fun. We do not encourage spectators along the route as it is in remote areas with little access.

Environmental policy We are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to hold the race in the national park and we are sure it will be one of the elements of the event you will remember.

We ask all competitors to respect their surroundings and keep to defined routes. Any competitor found littering will be automatically disqualified.

The couple, Alice from Boula, Firies and Seamus from Knockrour, Scartaglin, celebrated their nuptials with their family and friends in St Gertrude’s Church in Firies on Saturday.

And following a stop off for food in Hendersons with guests the bridal party headed to the Aghadoe and Ross Castle for photographs captured by Ian Cronin.

They then enjoyed a meal and a night of dancing at the Killarney Oaks Hotel.

The bridal party was made up of Hannah Kennedy as Matron of Honour, Kay O’Leary and Ellen Dowd as Bridesmaids, sisters of the bride.

Best Man was Jer Horgan, friend of the groom, while Groomsmen were Pat Down who is brother of the bride, and TJ Murphy Seamus’ brother-in-law.

Flowergirls were the groom’s niece

Marissa Murphy, and Alice’s niece Emma O’Leary. Pageboys were brothers Darragh and Jerry Kennedy, Alice’s nephews.

“It flew by,” Alice told the Killarney Advertiser. “We had a great day and spent the night dancing. It all went off fine.”

The couple met on December 23, 2011 after being introduced on a night out in Scruffys as Seamus is friends with Alice’s brother Pat. They got engaged last September after Seamus got down on one knee at Gougane Barra, surprising Alice.

“It was love at first sight, we just clicked,” Alice said.

This week Alice, who works in Firies Childcare, and Seamus, who is a farmer, headed to Rome before embarking on a Mediterranean cruise.

Spa family fun day a massive success

Spa GAA officials have described last Saturday’s open fun day as a “massive success”.

The club opened its doors on Saturday afternoon for a day-long event that included activities for all ages from the balloon modelling, face painting, Brickx Club, cake sale and tattoo art in the upstairs halls to the Junior Bake Off, Teddy Bear Fashion Parade and BBQ downstairs.

“It was a massive success,” PRO Deirdre O’Sullivan Darcy told the Killarney Advertiser. “Despite the weather the place was choc-a-bloc and the big surprise is that it was not just Spa members who turned up but people from all over Killarney.”

The fun-day was organised by Seamus Moynihan, the club’s Coiste na Og Chair and his committee.

One of the highlights was the indoor activities in the sports hall which included activities like the hang-tough challenge, penalty shootout, golf chip challenge and basketball.

Members of the local Camogie club were also on hand to demonstrate this branch of the sport to visitors.

“We even managed to run a full programme of events outside, including tugo-war even though it was raining,” added Deirdre.

This was the first time in two years the Spa Club hosted an open day, but given the success of Saturday’s event the club hopes to make it an annual occasion.

Sisters Julie and Bridie Doherty left Knockanes, Headford in 1930 for New York.

There, they met brothers Dan and Charlie Collins from Goleen in West Cork, and the brothers became their respective husbands.

It was the extended members of this US branch of the family that returned to Kerry for a family reunion at the Dromhall Hotel on Saturday night.

“It was a double match,” said their neph-

ew Sean, who still lives on the original family farm near Headford.

Two of Julie’s four daughters and their spouses and children were the collective guests at the reunion. They came from Upstate New York and Ontario Canada.

Members of the Collins family made the trip up from West Cork as well as cousins from Killarney.

SPECIALOCCASIONS Rory O’Flaherty wins Johnny Buckley Memorial trophy Lough Lein Anglers Club vice chairman Rory O’Flahery said he was both delighted and privileged to win the club’s most coveted trophy last weekend.

The Johnny Buckley Memorial Trophy is presented annually, since 1996, to the best performing local club member during its yearly club day.

Rory was presented with the memorial trophy by Johnny’s wife Maureen at the club’s awards dinner at the Dromhall Hotel last Sunday night.

Rory was classified fourth overall in the

coemptition after landing two brown trout, but the three competitors that finished ahead of him were all from County Cork so did not qualify for the award.

“I knew Johnny all my life and he was a great friend of all my family,” said Rory.

“I am a second generation-member of the club and it is a privilege to win it. It is the first time I have won it.”

Preparing your autumn garden There is something very special about autumn, colours seem more vibrant in the light, sounds carry further and there is a sense of preparation.

One of the things that really makes autumn for me, ever since I was a small child, is berries. A simple thing, yet if you plant the right plants, you will have lots of additional colour and interest in your garden, as well as many more visitors in the form of birds and other wildlife.

One of the most charming plants at this time of the year is the Killarney Arbutus, or Arbutus unedo. We are familiar with it growing around our lakes, where it can take on extraordinary shapes. In a sheltered garden it grows into a conical large shrub, or small tree. It is evergreen with dark glossy green leaves. It has a reddish bark which peels and is suitable for pruning. However, it comes into its own around this time of year when it flowers and fruits simultaneously. It has clusters of sweet smelling bell shaped white flowers, and orange to red fruits which look like strawberries – giving it its common name, the Strawberry tree.

I have often mentioned the Spindle bush, or Euonymus europaeus, a wonderful shrub which is indigenous to our country. It is ideal for hedging and can be found in many hedgerows in the county, prominent now in with its bright pink berries. The berry husks are in three segments, fuchsia in colour with the actual berry being bright orange. In addi-

tion the foliage also turns a bright red.

All types of cotoneaster also bear berries and are great plants for pollinators in the summer.

Ornamental crab apples also come into their own at this time – the small, bitter apples come in every shade from yellow to the brightest red. They stay on the tree well into the winter, only when frost is very severe do they drop. Birds are also not that fond of them until they are sweetened after a cold spell. Some excellent varieties are: Malus Red Sentinel, M. Butterball, lovely creamy yellow with a red blush, M. Gorgeous covered in masses of white flowers, a small tree very suitable for smaller gardens, pink/ pale red apples, M. Evereste, a beautiful dome shaped crown with bright yellow apples. Lots of pink flowers in Spring, M. Rosehip, very red apples, narrow habit, and M. Golden Hornet, with dark golden apples, a tall tree.

Mountain Ash is another tree which should never be underestimated! White flowers in spring which are attractive to bees, coloured foliage in the autumn and clusters of berries from late summer onwards, are exceptional value for money.

Suitable for small and medium sized gardens, they come in a variety of sizes and colours. Autumn Spire has a very narrow growing habit, bright orange berries and dark red leaves in autumn. S. Josephs Rock has yellow berries which brighten up the skyline, and S. Chinese lace has frothy foliage and pale pink berries.

Smooth Brexit transition for airport passengers Passengers travelling through Kerry Airport will experience the same efficient service from staff at the points of departure and arrival while flights are expected to continue to operate as normal in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Kerry Airport has two destinations in the United Kingdom: London Luton and London Stansted.

UK passport holders arriving at Irish airports are currently processed through the ‘EU/EEA/CH’ channel. If the UK leaves the EU without a deal, the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) has confirmed that UK passport

holders will continue to be processed through the ‘EU/EEA/CH’ channel – however, this ‘EU/EEA/CH’ channel will be re-designated as an ‘EU/EEA/CH and UK’ channel.

All necessary signage has been ordered and ready to be placed in the relevant areas at the airport should the United Kingdom exit the European Union.

Kerry Airport does not, under any circumstances, provide for the importation or exportation of Cargo and does not hold the relevant licence to do so.

Therefore, the airport will not be affected by any issues that will evolve in this area as a result of the UK’s exit from the European Union.

“Training of employees at Kerry Airport is up-to-date and ongoing but we suspect that every airport and other businesses in Ireland will encounter difficulties in UK-sourced training,” he said.

Celebration of fashion at Aghadoe Heights Top fashion designers showcased their new autumn collections over a fashionable and full afternoon in Killarney on Sunday.

The New Collections Luncheon and Show in the Aghadoe Heights Hotel, Killarney, certainly lived up to expectations as fashion designers Helen Cody, Umit Kutluk, Carol Kennelly and Tina Griffin, along with Kerry designers and boutiques showcased their new autumn collections over a fashionable and fun filled afternoon.

Sponsored by Kelliher's Toyota Tralee, the event was MC’ed by Elaine Kinsella from Radio Kerry and stylist and model agent Orla Diffily.

It commenced with a ‘live from the red carpet’ as guests arrived in glorious sunshine - followed by a champagne reception in the newly opened Terrace Bar with spectacular views overlooking the Lakes of Killarney. Guests enjoyed sump-

Arts Council invests in ‘high-quality’ events Kerry people will experience a wide range of high-quality arts events in the months ahead with funding for a number of local organisations and artists through two grants programmes.

Transform your body in four months What would your transformation look like if you committed to making your health a priority for the next four months until we kick off a New Year?

Life happens and it’s easy to become unmotivated - but what gets you back on track, and, more importantly, keeps you on track?

We all go through times where might not put ourselves first. For example, I’m in the fitness industry and the perception is “those people must be working out non-stop!”, however our business grew drastically over the past 18 months and I was making that a priority instead of myself.

In June, I decided enough was enough.

I committed to myself that I was going to work out 16 times per month. This could be in a class which is my favourite, out for a run, or by myself in the gym. It didn’t matter what or how, I was going to get it done for at least 30-60 minutes, 16 times per month.

You might be thinking that’s way too much. No problem – start with 10. That’s exactly what one of my nutrition clients decided he would commit to starting this month.

It’s good for your mental state and is crucial to my success as a business owner, wife, step-mom, and overall pleasant human to be around. Working out makes me feel better.

Catherine Young and Feasta are among those to receive the funding boost from the Arts Council. Across the country, the Government agency for funding and developing the arts awarded €7.3 million to some 131 artists, arts organisations and projects through its Arts Grant Funding programme.

In addition, the Council said Kerry audiences would get the opportunity to see Rose Henderson’s tour 'Take Off Your Cornflakes', West Ocean String Quartet and FRNKNSTN by Michael West, as part of an investment of €915,000 through its Touring and Dissemination of Work Scheme in 22 companies and artists to bring great art on tour to 26 counties across every region of Ireland.

“The Arts Council is delighted to announce this significant investment in the arts through our Arts Grant Funding and Touring programmes,” Orlaith

McBride, Arts Council Director, said.

“This investment recognises the world class talent that continues to be displayed by our artists and arts organisations. The range of activities supported will ensure that audiences across the island of Ireland will have access to artistic work of ambition, innovation and excellence.”

Now in its second year, the Arts Grant Funding scheme was first introduced in 2018 under the agency’s 10-year strategy, ‘Making Great Art Work’.

Separately, the Arts Council expects to award a further €35 million through its Strategic Funding scheme in 2020, along with significant additional investment in bursaries for artists, projects, touring and other supports and grants.

Junction assessment being undertaken At the recent meeting of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Maura Healy-Rae asked Kerry County Council and the TII to construct a roundabout adjacent to the Coolcaslagh junction at Lissivigeen, in order to address the daily torment and danger motorists are facing there.

This junction accesses onto the N22 and forms part of the main artery into our county, she explained.

Cllr Maura Healy-Rae welcomes that a junction assessment is being under-

taken regarding capacity and safety at the junction and that a feasibility report identifying the need for the project is being prepared for submission to the TII to seek funding and to progress design and appraisal. She also emphasised that no other action or safety scheme will adequately address the issues pertaining to this junction given the numerous traffic lanes and movements there.

“No week passes where there isn’t some accident at this location and it is certainly time it was tackled properly.”

17th century chalice recovered Gardaí in County Louth have recovered a very valuable stolen 17th century chalice, 21 years after it was stolen during a burglary in Ardee town, in 1998.

Fact check: Only 59 false claims this week President Trump made 59 false claims last week according to US TV station CNN who fact-check his speeches and tweets.

He also spoke of Brexit and claimed to be in the UK in June 2016 - the day the British people went to the polls.

“It's a complicated subject (Brexit), but they took a vote, and the vote was -- I was there. I happened to be there the day of that vote," Trump told a press conference earlier this week.

Trump was not in the United Kingdom the day of the Brexit vote in June 2016, in fact he was in New York. He visited Scotland the day after the vote.

Keep Irish language in schools campaign A new campaign called #Gaeilge4All has been launched to strengthen and defend the Irish language in the education system and to ensure that every student can have a positive, meaningful and fulfilling Irish language learning experience from preschool to third level.

Astronauts returned to earth after space mission An American, a Russian and the first person from the United Arab Emirates to fly into space, landed safely yesterday (Thursday) after a six-hour flight from the International Space Station.

The capsule carrying Nick Hague, Alexey Ovchinin and Hazzaa al-Mansoori touched down on the steppe in Kazakhstan in Central Asia - the impact sending a cloud of dust into the sky.

Al-Mansoori, the first of two men chosen by the United Arab Emirates to fly to the space station, returned after an eight-day mission while space veteran Ovchinin and Hague, who was on his maiden flight,

are back after spending six months at the station.

The three men were extracted from the capsule and put on fold-out chairs so that they could rest and undergo preliminary medical checks. Al-Mansoori’s team wrapped the smiling astronaut in his country’s flag before taking him away for more health checks.

The former military pilot, the first Arab to have travelled to the International Space Station, will return home to a hero’s welcome as his flight last month was widely celebrated across the country, and Dubai’s tallest skyscraper was lit up to mark the launch.

Killarney to host Mental Health Nurses conference Killarney will host the ‘Mental Health Nurse Managers Ireland’ national conference later this month.

The National MHNMI Conference will take place in The Plaza Hotel on October 17.

This year’s theme is entitled ‘Future Fit’, with the aim of which is to provide Senior Mental Health Nurse Managers with an overview of the theory and principles of Mindfulness, CBT, MH Management to manage their physical, emotional and mental health in a demanding role within the workplace.

“In this regard, we host an annual national conference with a focus on a relevant mental health theme reflective of current

developments in mental health services.

This conference provides opportunity for networking and the sharing of views and ideas within a professional forum,” said Anthony Smith, Chairperson, Mental Health Nurse Managers Ireland.

According to a 2019 Kantar Millward Brown survey: 64 percent agree that reform is needed in the Irish educational system to ensure that all students finish their education with a competent level of Irish. Only 11 percent were against this. The same percentage said that students should study Irish up to Leaving Cert level.

“Since the foundation of the State in the south all Governments have avoided the fact that the system for Irish in our education system is broken. We, in the #Gaeilge4All campaign, believe that the time has come to fix the prob-

lems in a holistic and comprehensive manner. It’s time to address the real issues head on. We know that the public are behind reform, based not only on the results of the Kantar Millward Brown survey with regard to Irish in the education system but also based on thousands and thousands of social media comments, letters to editors, newspaper articles, opinion pieces, polls and much more over the years,” Julian de Spáinn, a spokesperson for the campaign said.

Swedish comedy-drama to be screened in Beaufort Beaufort Film Night returns for another screening at The Inn Between Bar, Beaufort, next Friday, October 11.

Swedish comedy-drama ‘A Man Called Ove’ which has a 15A Certificate and was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Make-Up and Hairstyling, will be the feature on the night, starting at 8.30pm.

Based on the best-selling novel by Fredrik Backman, it tells the story of widower Ove, played by Rolf Lassgård, a retiree struggling to come to terms with the death of his beloved wife Sonja, and who spends his days strictly enforcing the local housing association rules.

Ove’s world is unexpectedly turned upside down when a young family move in next door. Despite his initial resistance, Ove slowly forms a bond with his new neighbours and discovers a whole new side of life.

“This Swedish international smash hit is a bittersweet but charming tale of one man rediscovering himself, often with hilarious results,” Hazel Joy, from Beaufort Film Night, said.

“This is a true crowd-pleaser held together by a strong lead performance by Rolf Lassgård, an actor known internationally for his portrayal of TV detective

Kurt Wallander in the original Swedish film series.”

Beaufort Film Night is a non-profit community organisation founded by local film enthusiasts whose aim is to screen cultural English language and international language films, fostering an interest in and appreciation of these category of films, which normally don’t get a general release screening in Kerry, she added.

Admission to the film is €7 which will go towards covering the motion picture licencing fee and the newly purchased screen.

ON THE RUN: Kingdom Veteran, Vintage and Classic Car Club members, with Kerry Rose Sally-Anne Leahy prepare for the annual Kenmare Autumn run

1936 car and driver entered in annual Kenmare run An 83-year-old Killarney man, driving a car that was manufactured the same year he was born, will tackle the final major classic car run in the county next weekend.

The Kingdom Veteran Vintage and Classic Car Club will brings it 40th anniversary year of celebration to a close with its annual Kenmare Weekend Run which takes place between Friday and Sunday next.

The club is expecting over 120 cars for the three-day event which is based in the Kenmare Bay Hotel.

Classic car enthusiasts from all over Ireland will arrive in the South Kerry town on Friday ahead of Saturday’s run through West Cork. Starting in Kenmare, the run

will visit the Top of Coom, Gougane Barra and Glengarriff, before returning via the Healy Pass and Kilmackillogue.

Among them will be Killarney man Mike McDonagh who will drive a 1936 Riley in the event.

“Mike is a gentleman and would always enter our Kenmare and Ring of Kerry runs,” KVVCCC Chairman Tony Heir told the Killarney Advertiser.

“This runs suits him, he can leave Killarney early on Friday and have a rest in the hotel before the long run on Saturday.”

The club is hopeful that a 1912 Ford Model T, owned by member Paul Murphy, will enter the run – if the entry materialises it will be the oldest car in the run.

Welsh rugby star to take part in Killarney Historic Rally Former Welsh Rugby International Scott Williams is planning to contest next month’s Rentokil-Initial Killarney Historic Rally.

Williams, a long-time motorsport fan, was one of the heroes of the 2012 Grand Slam winning squad. He scored a famous try against England from the halfway line in Twickenham, a key moment in the Welsh claiming the title that year.

To date, he has 32 caps and 45 points for his country to his name and partook in the 2015 Welsh squad for the Six Nations Championship. He was also named in the extended Welsh squad for the 2015 World Cup but was ruled out during the tournament with a knee injury.

He has also made he has made 124 appearances for the Welsh club side Scarlets, scoring a total of 21 tries during a distinguished club career.

He set up Scott Williams Motorsport in 2016 and has built and supplied rally cars for various Welsh competitors over the last three years.

Last weekend he marked his Irish rally driving debut by finishing 10th in the national section of the Cork ‘20’ Rally, using the event as a shakedown ahead of an appearance in Killarney next month.

“Having played at the pinnacle of professional sport for several years, one of my ambitions is to take this experience of performing and thriving at the highest level and channel it through my second great passion for motorsport,” he said.

Williams has been in Killarney before as his brother-in-law Barry Jones has contested both the Rally of the Lakes and the Historic Rally.

“I’ve always loved rallying. My brother-in-law is a rally driver, so since being married it’s hard for me to get away from it,” he said.

Refurbishment of Two Mile Community NS It’s been another very successful year for Two Mile Community National School who recently reopened after refurbishment works.

Kerry ETB opened the doors of the only multi denominational school in the Killarney area which serves the needs of the local and wider community and fully celebrates diversity.

Brendan Griffin TD, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport officiated at the launch.

As well as its unique multi denominational ethos, having Kerry ETB as its patron is significant in what the school has to offer.

Kerry ETB is a locally based state agency and is already the patron of two other community national schools and eight post primary schools in Kerry.

Kerry ETB is also the largest provider of adult further education in Kerry and provides key administrative, IT, HR, Capital Buildings and many other supports to its schools. This ensures that the staff of the

school can focus on excellence in teaching and learning.

"This is very positive progress in such a short time,” Brendan Griffin TD, said.

“It is hugely encouraging and a great symbol of a rural community fighting back to secure the future for their school. I’m delighted that the school got support from the Capital Improvement Works Grant.

This will make a massive contribution to the future of the school for many years to come.”

Catherine Barry, Principal of Two Mile Community National School added that she wishes to express her gratitude to the Department of Education and Skills and to Kerry Education and Training Board for the fine refurbishment of Two Mile Community National School.

“Since opening in 2017, the school pro-

vides for diversity and choice in the Killarney area with the support of Kerry ETB. The learning experience of the children will be enhanced by the warm, comfortable and attractive environment as we continue to provide the high standard of education that is characteristic of the Community National School model.”

Ann O’Dwyer, Director of Schools, Kerry ETB said that Kerry ETB welcomes the Department of Education and Skills recent refurbishment grant for the Two Mile Community National School in Killarney.

“This has built on the remedial works carried out in 2017 and also addressed the much-needed insulation, replacement of windows and doors, floor covering and general refurbishment. Kerry ETB, together with the Two Mile CNS Board of Management and staff, look back on a very successful year. The provision of the Little Explorers preschool on site has also been a huge asset to the school. The Parents Council have also joined the Kerry ETB Parents Forum and are now aware of and availing of the opportunities for training and support for parents in ETB schools such as Parenting Courses, ICT Courses etc."

Lakers see off Carlow in tense home opener A late three-point play by new Danish signing Toby Christensen proved crucial as the Scotts Lakers held on for a vital home win against IT Carlow on Saturday.

The Lakers led by 14 heading into the fourth quarter but the visitors fought back down the stretch to cut the deficit to just a single point. With the Lakers’ star man Aaron Jackson fouled out, momentum appeared to be on Carlow’s side but the hosts steadied the ship and Christensen’s basket and

subsequent free throw all but sealed the victory.

Crucially, this result sees the Lakers improve to 1-1 (one win and one defeat) ahead of this week’s double-header against promotion favourites Ballincollig and the Waterford Vikings, both of whom are currently undefeated.

A packed house at Killarney Sports Centre was treated to an exciting if not always fast-paced encounter as numerous stoppages rather took the sting out of the game. Carlow adopted a physical approach, which frequently left bodies strewn on the ground, which in turn left

players injured and in need of attention - not to mention all the wet spots that needed to be cleaned up by the mop boys.

Sharpshooter Brian O’Neill was in good form for the Lakers in the first half and his 12 points contributed to a four-point half-time lead.

4.10.2019 There was little to separate the sides in the third but then 6’6” guard Aaron Jackson, making his first appearance in Killarney, stepped up to the plate. First the American got the home supporters on their feet when he burst through the Carlow defence for a powerful dunk, and then he drilled a three-pointer to open up a commanding 10-point lead.

Brian O’Neill also nailed a corner three after a slick passing move and the Lakers led by 14 (67-53) at the end of the third.

Carlow continued with their in-your-face approach in the final quarter and this appeared to frustrate the home team, who felt as though they weren’t getting enough protection from the officials.

Whatever Carlow were doing, it was working. The Lakers’ advantage was slashed to just five entering the final three minutes of play, but a nice no-look pass by Jackson teed up Andy Fitzgerald who made it a seven-point game with 2:44 on the clock.

Carlow were far from done, however, and they quickly clawed it back to just three before the Lakers were dealt a crushing blow when Jackson was ejected after committing his second unsportsmanlike foul. It appeared as though the American was simply trying to free himself from his opposite number but the refs deemed his shoulder charge to be over the top. Jackson left the floor to a rousing ovation with an impressive tally of 34 points to his name.

BIG TIME PLAY

The final two minutes were nip and tuck and when the visitors scored with 30 seconds remaining, it was a one-point game. Shane McCarthy’s men were in dire need of a big time play on the offensive end. And they got it.

Team captain Mark Greene, who made a quicker-than-expected return from a nasty finger injury to line out in the Lakers’ first home game of the season, attacked the heart of the Carlow defence before offloading to forward Toby Christensen in the paint. The Dane rose up and drew a foul from the desperate defender before dropping in a lay-up to make it a three-point game. The boisterous home crowd fell silent for the subsequent free throw and Christensen held his nerve to make it 88-84 with 0:22 to go.

Carlow came back down the floor, perhaps hoping to somehow fashion a fourpoint play, but it wasn’t to be.

In the end, it was a confidence-boosting win for the Lakers, who are now facing into two tough-looking games in less than 24 hours.

Tough double-header will test McCarthy’s new-look team The Scotts Lakers have a busy weekend ahead. Tomorrow (Saturday) they travel to Ballincollig Community Centre to play league favourites Tradehouse Central Ballincollig at 4pm. | By Eamonn Keogh The Lakers have also drawn Ballincollig in the first round of the cup and this will take place in Killarney on October 26.

The Cork side have won the cup for the past two seasons and have enjoyed the advantage over the Lakers in a number of clashes in the same period. Top American player Andre Nation is back with Ball-

incollig again this season and he was an interested observer, along with some of his teammates and coach Kieran O'Sullivan, at the Killarney Sports Centre last Saturday night.

Lakers coach Shane McCarthy will be pleased with the Carlow victory but will know that an improved performance will be required to trouble Ballincollig in the league and cup. Aaron Jackson has

scored 33 and 34 points for the Lakers in his opening two games so Ballincollig will probably have a plan to try and reduce his scoring threat.

Nation scored 31 in the Cork side's 85-71 win over Portlaoise last weekend while the likes of Ciarán O’Sullivan, Dylan Corkery and Iñigo Zabalo have also impressed for them so far this season.

HOME GAME

It will be a quick turnaround for the Scotts Lakers after the journey to Cork on Saturday. The following day (Sunday), the Lakers will host the Waterford Vikings in Killarney Sports Centre at 3pm.

Dr Crokes kept their hopes of retaining their Kerry SFC title alive and kicking with a superb second-half display at a rain-washed Austin Stack Park on Saturday evening last.

After a close enough first half, Crokes led by a mere two points, 0-8 to 0-6.

They asserted total supremacy in the second, however, as they kicked nine points to the opposition’s two. Kieran’s lost their captain, Pádraig Reidy, when he was concussed following an accidental clash with Gavin O’Shea and Crokes upped the pace with Johnny Buckley, Gavin White and Michael Potts to the fore in all facets of play.

The underdogs had plenty of possession with Philip O’Connor and Eddie Horan prominent but they kicked far too many wides. They packed their defence and Crokes found it hard to break down this defensive screen, although Tony Brosnan showed to good effect for the second week in a row. Over the hour he scored seven points, three of these from play. David Shaw scored 0-4 and Kieran O’Leary added two sweet points.

Micheál Burns put in a busy half-hour as a scoring creator, adding a point to his side's second-half tally of nine.

This was a great win for the Legion as West Kerry fancied their chances with An Ghaeltacht on board. They came up against a very determined Legion, however, who were led by in-form forwards James O’Donoghue and Conor Keane.

Corner back Cian Gammell soloed upfield early on and kicked a great point and after five minutes, Man of the Match James O’Donoghue kicked the first of his five scores. West Kerry were very dependent on Dara O’Shea to score from frees and he kicked seven points in all (one from play).

James O’Donoghue added two more before Jamie O’Sullivan stole in for a morale-boosting goal. Shaun Keane gave Legion a decisive pull at midfield and Conor Keane added a goal to stretch the Legion lead to 10 points.

Brian Ó Beaglaoich and Pádraig Ó Sé pulled goals back for West Kerry in the second half but further points, including two by Darragh Lyne, kept Legion on course.

Top scorer for the Legion was Conor Keane. He finished up with 1-4, 0-3 from frees. Legion were well deserving of their six-point win and march on to the next round.

KILCUMMIN 2-12 MID KERRY 0-13

Kilcummin needed to score five points in the closing minutes to make sure of victory against a Mid Kerry side that had to line out without Darran O’Sullivan, Gavin O’Grady and Peter Crowley.

Mid Kerry started well and led 0-5 to 0-3 after 15 minutes, even though they were playing into the breeze in that first half. Kilcummin did get going eventually and were back in business by the 20th minute when the scores were tied at five points each. Kieran Murphy got through for a goal and Noel Duggan finished a loose ball to the net to leave Kilcummin leading at

half-time, 2-7 to 0-7.

Mid Kerry had their best spell in the second half. Gary Sayers, Liam Carey and Pa Wrenn all scored two points each to leave them just one point adrift. The East Kerry side took the initiative thereafter, however, and they scored five points without reply.

So Kilcummin progress to Round 3 as Mid Kerry exit the championship at the earliest possible stage.

EAST KERRY 3-13 AUSTIN STACKS 3-7

East Kerry got off to a great start while Stacks had to wait until the 23rd minute for their first point in this losers’ round game.

Paudie Clifford, Brian O’Donoghue and Ronan Buckley were the East Kerry scorers in the opening period. Stacks got a timely boost in the 28th minute when Micheál O’Gara scored the opening goal, but this was equalled immediately by Shane Cronin at the other end. A Darragh Roche point put East Kerry ahead 1-7 to 1-2 at half-time.

East Kerry continued to lead the way until the 45th minute when O’Gara fisted the ball in to cut the deficit to just two. Kieran Donaghy had been having a very quiet game up to this juncture but he fed a great ball to Michael O’Donnell for Stacks’ third goal in the 48th minute and the club champions were ahead for the very first time.

A point from a free by David Clifford brought the sides level and better was to follow for the East when Brian O’Donoghue was fouled in the square.

Paudie Clifford scored the penalty and he quickly followed up with his second goal to copper-fasten the victory.

OTHER GAMES

Elsewhere, Dingle are safely through to the quarter-finals following their 2-9 to 1-11 win over Kerins O’Rahilly’s, as are South Kerry who got the better of St Brendan’s (1-12 to 1-9).

Rathmore are out on the back of consecutive defeats to Dr Crokes and Kenmare Shamrocks.

ing made it 3-0 on the half-hour mark and when the youngster doubled his tally just five minutes later, a rout was on the cards.

Veteran defender Stephen O’Mahony headed in a fifth just before half time and the Killarney club already had two feet in the next round of the FAI Junior Cup. Shannonside, who are currently top of Division 1 of the Desmond League, must have feared that worse was to come.

Worse was to come. Two quick-fire Ryan Kelliher goals made it 7-0 by the 59th minute and ten minutes later, Sparling made it eight. Celtic have started the 2019/20 campaign at a ferocious pace and there was certainly no letting up in the final quarter as far as they were concerned. Roche (twice) and Kelliher both found the target to complete their hat-tricks and Celtic ran out utterly comprehensive 11-0 winners.

The next phase of the FAI Junior Cup (Round 3) is scheduled to take place on October 19/20.

Next up for Celtic is another cup fixture as they take on Munster Senior League outfit Everton in the first round of the Munster Champions Trophy. That match will take place in Celtic Park this Saturday at 7.30pm.

Elsewhere, crosstown rivals Killarney Athletic have a tricky away tie in the Munster Junior Cup. The Blues take on last year’s beaten league finalists Castleisland on Saturday at 7pm.

Killarney man to run New York marathon

CYCLING

Killarney runner Conor O’Leary has secured a coveted entry on next month’s New York City Marathon.

The well-known manager of the leisure centre in the Towers Hotel is competing in the November 3 race to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis Ireland South Kerry Branch after his mother, Mary, passed away from the disease in 2011.

“This will be my second marathon,” Conor told the Killarney Advertiser. “I ran Dublin last year after promising my dying mother I’d run a marathon in her name. I enjoyed it so much I decided to try another one.”

His decision to run New York was influenced by his wife, Ann, who is originally from the Bronx area of the city. Last October he completed the Dublin marathon in a time of 4hrs 38mins.

“If I can finish New York in the same time, I would be very happy,” he added. “It’s not about the time; the atmosphere through the five boroughs is going to be electric.”

Killarney club climbs to national success Conor Kissane of Killarney Cycling Club has admitted that he couldn’t have done much more after finishing second in the Irish National Hillclimb Championship for the second year in a row.

The national championship event, the final race on the 2019 road calendar, took place last Sunday in Castleisland. Hosted

by Tralee Manor West Cycling Club, the event attracted a capacity star-studded entry.

Kissane, who is the county hillclimbing champion, lost out to Mark Dowling.

The Dubliner is recognised as one of the country’s top climbers and is a former winner of Rás Mumhan, one of the country’s biggest multi-day races and Kerry’s flagship cycle race.

Kissane clocked a time of 4m 02.876s for

the 1.3km climb. It was just over 18 seconds off Dowling’s pace but a massive 15 seconds improvement on the time he set in the final round of the county championship over the same course in August.

“I was very happy with my own performance, Mark is the top rider in the country when it comes to climbing,” Kissane told the Killarney Advertiser.

It was the first time in years that a Kerry club hosted a national championship event of any sort.

“It was very professionally run by the club,” Kissane added. “They pulled out all the stops.”

The Killarney club was well represented on the final results sheet with Marcus Treacy taking sixth place. Catherine Kiely was third in the ladies competition and Tom Daly was second in the over 60s.

R ally GB underway for Breen and Nagle

A result for Craig Breen and Paul Nagle on this weekend’s Rally GB could pave the way for a third outing with the Hyundai Motorsport World Rally Team before the end of the year.

The weekend’s action centres on the North and Mid Wales forests with centralised servicing in the holiday resort town of Llandudno on the north Welsh coast.

As in Finland in August, their role on this event is to score manufacturer championship points. While Breen rates it as one his favourite events of the year, they will be expected to finish behind team leader, Belgian Thierry Neuville, even if they have to take unnecessary time penalties to do that. Nagle has described this weekend’s rally as their “second interview” and given their strong performance in Finland they are still on target for a full-time drive with the squad.

“It’s great to be back in the car again,” Craig said. “Finland exceeded my expectations and definitely gave me a lot more confidence going forward. I know it’s going to be difficult and we need to do

everything we can to provide good manufacturers’ championship points.” |

Colin O’Donoghue celebrated his 25th birthday in style by finishing second overall in the national section of the Cork “20” International Rally at the weekend in what was his first outing in a Class 14 Escort.

David Randles and Andrew Cronin put in a good drive to take the win in class 13F in their Nissan Almera F2 car while Alan Ring gave his new BMW M3 a perfect debut, taking third in his class. Kieran Reen and Mark O'Leary took overall honours in the junior section of the event in their Honda Civic.

Killarney Rugby MINIS: Last Saturday our minis took to the pitch at Thomond Park to play an exhibition match at half time of the Munster v Dragons match. 12 players and 2 coaches braved the heavy rain to take on Kilfeacle. A busload of us travelled up and the lads were amazing, not letting the nerves or the crowd get to them.

Firies CLUB 600: The 2nd Club 600 draw took place in Sherwood’s Bar on Thursday night. The winner of the top prize of €2,000 was Denis Costello (Batterfield).

The next draw will take place in Airport Bar on Thursday, October 17. A huge thank you to all who supported our Club 600 draw and continue to do so.

Fossa BOOK LAUNCH: Friday October 25 at 7.30pm is a very important date for the diary as the eagerly and most-anticipated book of the year is being launched in the clubhouse with the one and only Pat Spillane. Please come along and enjoy the night.

GIRLS: Hard luck to our U14 girls who came up short against Cromane in the East Kerry League Division 1. Well done to all. Our U8 Girls team had a great day playing against our neighbours Beaufort last week. A big thank you to all involved.

A big day out last week for our U10s. A very successful blitz was held in Fossa with Beaufort, Firies and Glenflesk taking part. A huge thank you to all involved.

EXERCISE CLASSES: Autumn exercise

FIXTURES: Senior ladies will play Abbeyside of Waterford on Sunday at 1.45pm in Mallow in the Munster Ladies Intermediate Club quarter-final. Beaufort senior men are away to Keel on Sunday at midday in Round 1 of the Mid Kerry O'Sullivan Cup.

Glenflesk LOTTO: The next draw will take place in The Kerry Way on October 7. Jackpot will be €10,600 GOLF: The Glenflesk GAA Golf Classic was a hugely successful event which raised much needed funds for our club.

A popular winner was Team Pat Favier former chairperson of Glenflesk and East Kerry board. (Every dog really does have his day). Thanks to our main sponsors John o Sullivan of Lee strand and Ed Murphy haulage and all who sponsored teams and tee boxes. Thanks to Kenmare golf club for having the course in excellent condition and for the beautiful food and beverages supplied on the day.

KNOCKANES NS: Very well done to Knockanes NS who retained the East Kerry 3-Teacher Cumann na mBunscoil Cup last Wednesday.

Kilcummin RESULTS: Kerry SFC Rd 2A – Mid Kerry 0-13 Kilcummin 2-12.

LADIES: Best wishes to the senior ladies who play Donaghmore of Cork in Round 1 of the Munster Club Championship on Sunday in Rathmore at 1pm.
