Emergency services deal with several major incidents

It has been an exceptionally busy week for the emergency services in the wider Killarney area - with a number of serious incidents between Tuesday and Thursday.

MISSING MAN

| By Sean Moriarty Killarney Fire and Rescue, the Irish Air Corps, the National Ambulance Service, the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team and Gardai were kept exceptionally busy as there were also several less serious incidents that tested resources to their limits this week. As the Killarney Advertiser closed for press yesterday evening (Thursday) there were reports of a serious farm accident between Currow and Castleisland which left one man fatally injured. Separately there was also a search for another missing man since early yesterday morning.

ROAD CLOSED

On Tuesday the main Kilgarvan road was closed for a number of hours after a crane collided with a tourist coach. The driver of the coach was lucky to escape with his

tential if it went inside the building. It looks like the windowsills caught fire, the building is pepper-dry so if it went inside it could have been a lot worse,” a spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. The situation was quickly brought under control and the town centre returned to normal within 45 minutes.

life as it's believed the boom of the crane smashed through the front window of the bus. He was airlifted to Cork University Hospital while one other coach passenger was transported by road to University Hospital Kerry (UHK). A total of 31 people were on the coach including the driver and a tour guide and many were treated for shock at the scene.

TOWN CENTRE FIRE

On Wednesday a fire broke out in Killarney town centre. Four units of Killarney Fire and Rescue attended after smoke was seen billowing from the rear of a

building off Glebe Lane just after 1.30pm. Concerned onlookers started banging on doors of houses on the lane to make sure there was no one inside the buildings. The fire service and Gardai were on the scene within minutes. Three units, including the water tender, were placed in the Glebe car park while another fire truck was positioned at Market Cross to gain access to the fire through the front of business premises on the main street. While the cause of the fire is not yet known, Killarney Fire and Rescue said it had the potential to be worse. “It is an old building, it had [the fire] po-

Yesterday (Thursday) Valentia Coast Guard assisted Gardai and the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team after a climber was reported missing on Carrauntoohil. The emergency services were deployed to the mountain in the early hours of the morning. Helicopter Rescue 117 was also tasked to the area in an effort to find the missing person. Drones were also used to search for the missing man – who was named by Kerry Mountain Rescue Team as John Dunne from Tipperary. Mr Dunne, an experienced hill walker, had been out walking on Wednesday but he did not return to his accommodation as expected. Anyone who may have seen Mr Dunne on the mountains is asked to contact Killarney Gardaí on 064 66 31222. This search came less than 12 hours after another casualty was airlifted by Rescue 115 from Carrauntoohil on Wednesday evening and brought University Hospital Kerry. On Wednesday morning a fishing vessel lost power, caught fire and sunk off the West Cork coast resulted in 11 crew members being airlifted to safety by Rescue 115.

Miss Keane closes her school books after 43 year's dedicated service | By Michelle Crean From days of "chalk and talk" right through to today's modern and sophisticated technologies - one teacher has inspired thousands - but today (Friday) she officially closed her books after 43 years. Teacher Marcia Kissane (nee Keane) who is described as "a brilliant teacher" and "highly respected" is leaving Killarney Community College (KCC) ready to take on a new life challenge. From the moment she entered the old Tech in New Street in September 1979 she said she received a warm Killarney welcome. "I felt and knew I had found my special work place," she told the Killarney Advertiser. "For me, KCC is a place rich in experience where I have had the pleasure and

privilege of knowing and working with the most wonderful people with students and colleagues." She taught the old Group Cert and Inter Cert through to the latest modes of assessment in the new Junior and Leaving Certificates. Marcia also made GAA history in May 1992 as a selector on the Kerry VEC football team that won the All-Ireland inter-county series. She was the first female selector in an all-male management team to win an All-Ireland inter-county football final at Croke Park. "I have wonderful memories of coaching and organising athletes, cross country, ladies football and reaching All-Ireland glory with Kerry Vocational School. Teaching has been a life-changing journey. I have enjoyed so much teaching with my favourite subjects Geography, Maths and Irish. I have experienced fun

and laughter, joy and sorrow, love and acceptance, hope and despair, community and commitment. I love my students and I have been blessed and challenged by them as I have accompanied them on their school journeys. My special interest has been the Leaving Certificate Applied and watching the progress of these students over the years is one of the most gratifying experiences in teaching."

GRATITUDE

"I feel immense gratitude and appreciation for all the wonderful staff members it has been my honour and privilege to work with. I thank them for their generous sharing of expertise, skills, resources and knowledge but most of all for their love, kindness, understanding and non-judgemental acceptance," she added. "I leave in the knowledge that KCC is led and guided by professional, com-

passionate, caring people. KCC is a wonderful place of teaching and learning but most of all a place of valuing and affirmation of each and every unique individual in the community." And being a life-long learner Marcia is planning further study in the area of human relationships and plans to give parenting courses. "Thank you to Stella and Eilish and everyone in KCC and to my family, Ted, Cathy and Elaine."

Les proves that hard work can take you to the top The International Hotel’s Duty Manager Les Brozozka is celebrating this week after graduating with First Class Honours in Hotel Management at Munster Technology University.

SEVENS: Spa players from back: Ciaran Spillane, Mike Foley and Ryan O'Carroll. Front: Mags Cronin, Roisin Kearney, Megan Cronin, Alma and Eloise Cronin are all set for the 7s Tournament.

| By Sean Moriarty The Firies-based man started from the bottom and proved that hard work and determination make dreams come true. When he arrived in Ireland from Poland in 2006 he started as a salesman in a local furniture store. He wanted to work in the hospitality industry and started out as a Trainee Manager at the Fairview Hotel in 2012 before being promoted to Duty Manager there less than a year later. Always with his eye on the bigger picture, he took one step back to take two steps forward when he joined the team at the International Hotel in November 2015. With support from the Coyne family, owners of the International Hotel, Les set out on a journey from the bottom to the top. Starting out as a barman and restaurant specialist, by 2017 he was promoted to restaurant supervisor. In 2019 he joined the International Hotel’s Trainee Manager Programme, and doubled his work load by taking on courses at what was then called IT Tralee. By March 2020, just as the pandemic set in, he was promoted to Duty Manager, and despite the disruption, he continued his studies while gathering vital on-thejob experience. His journey reached its latest milestone this week when he passed his Hotel Management course from MTU Tralee with First Class Honours. During the three years on the National Trainee Manager Development Programme for employees of the hotel industry he worked and gained experience in every department of the very busy 99-bedroom four-star International Hotel. Les says he wants to

be an example to other people who want to follow a career in the hotel industry. “I had many obstacles, I am from Poland, I have my wife and two small children to look after, it was hard work,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “But I never took my eye off the ball. It is like Kerry football, they might lose a match but they can still win the championship. Now I have the life experience, I can back that up with the academics.” The National Trainee Manager Development Programme at MTU is run by experienced local hospitality sector workers and backed by the Irish Hotel Federation (IHF). “They know what kind of people they need in the industry and they make the course to fit that requirement,” added Less, who received €500 from the IHF in recognition of his efforts.

On Saturday and Sunday the club has organised a fundraising Club 7s GAA competition at its venue near Tiernaboul. The 7-a-side tournament will begin at 10am on Saturday and 11am on Sunday, with senior men’s and ladies teams from Kerry, Cork, Dublin, Limerick, Waterford, Tipperary and London competing over the weekend. As well as the football competition, the club will have live music every day from 12 noon at a special Rockshore marquee that has been installed in the club’s grounds for the weekend. “This is the first time the club have hosted such an event, and as well as the senior men’s and senior ladies 7-a-side tournament, with teams competing to win a share of the €10,000 prize money, there will be live music each day from 12 noon to 10pm, a variety of food vendors serving hot food and snacks, as well as a kid's play zone. It will be a family-friendly event with something for all ages,” said the club’s PRO Deirdre O'Sullivan Darcy. Full details on the event, teams, and the entertainment schedule can be found on

www.killarneyclub7s.ie. Tickets are priced at €20 for a day pass or €30 for a weekend pass and U18s are free but must be accompanied by an adult. Gates are open at the event from 9.30am to 9pm Saturday and 10am to 9pm on Sunday. “All entrants to the event, including players, must wear an entry wristband. You will get your wristband by purchasing a ticket online. The wristbands will be given at entry to the event,” she added. “There has a been a huge effort from our club members and volunteers working to get the grounds ready to welcome thousands of people to Spa over the weekend and a big thank you to everyone who is helping out." The men’s clubs entered are Kerins O'Rahillys, Austin Stacks, Cuala, Lucan Sarsfields, St Kiernans of London and Mitchelstown GAA. The Ladies squads are Southern Gaels, Brian Boru, Castleknock, Valley Rovers, Castlehaven, Feohanagh Castlemahon, Bantry, MKL Gaels and Clonakilty. Three clubs have entered teams in both competitions, Spa, Eire Óg and Na Fianna. Volunteers are still needed for the weekend so if anyone would be available to help out either day please contact Deirdre on 085 1216359.

Lydia receives letter from President Higgins | By Michelle Crean Part of a class project was to write a poem - but little did one pupil think that it would lead to her receiving a letter from the President! PRESIDENT'S LETTER: Lydia Leader pictured proudly holding the correspondence that she received from Áras an Uachtaráin.

Lydia Leader, along with her Fourth Class classmates all wrote poems to mark Poetry Day Ireland on April 28 under the direction of their class teacher Mr Mannix. Lydia Leader was selected

as the winning poet from the class and the decision was made to send her poem ‘Hope’ to poetry lover, President Michael D. Higgins. Lydia couldn't believe it when she then received a letter from the President’s office in Áras an Uachtaráin. President Higgins expressed that he was grateful for Lydia’s thoughtfulness and sent her his best wishes. "We are very proud of all our poets at Kilcummin NS," Principal, Gillian Sheehan,

told the Killarney Advertiser. "Well done and congratulations to Lydia on this wonderful feat! We are very proud of her and we have published her poem on our school website." "It was a huge surprise," Lydia added. "I didn't expect to receive a letter from the President. I'm thrilled. I will keep this letter in a very safe place. I am so thankful to the President for his letter. It means so much to me."

It's been some time since they were able to do street collections but members of the Killarney branch of the Kerry Hospice Foundation are back next week. | By Michelle Crean They are hoping the sun will shine for their annual Sunflower Day fundraiser next Friday, June 10, and that people will dig deep to help raise funds for such a vital countywide service. There will be collections at various locations in and around town as well as Foley’s Spar Shop, Fossa and Hegarty’s Spar Shop, Muckross. “This is our first Sunflower Day collection since 2019," Cathal Walshe, PRO of the Killarney Hospice Branch told the Killarney Advertiser. "It is one of our main annual fundraising events and is always well supported by the local community." Kerry Hospice Foundation provides free services for people with life limiting

illnesses at its 15 bed inpatient unit and Suaimhneas Day Care Centre at University Hospital Kerry (UHK) It costs in the region of €10,000 a week to provide these services, he added. Kerry Hospice Foundation has plans for further expansion of its services into the future. An outreach clinic has already been set up at Killarney Community Hospital where patients can meet with a Palliative Care Specialist. "This service, along with the existing services, would not be possible were it not for the generous support Kerry Hospice gets from the people of Kerry." People can find out more about the work of Kerry Hospice Foundation at www.kerryhospice.com, on Facebook or on Twitter @kerryhospice.

BUZZING: Children from four local school paid a visit to Killarney Honey on Mill Road this week as part of SuperValu's 'Save The Bees' campaign.

Children were buzzing after bee visit | By Michelle Crean It was a sweet treat for pupils for a number of primary school children this week who were buzzing after a trip to see the bees up close. On Monday pupils from St Oliver's Ballycasheen, Lissivegeen, Scoil Bhride Loreto and Presentation Monastery visited an Apiary site on Mill Road to observe bees in their natural environment. SuperValu recently concluded its 'Save The Bees' campaign which was trying to create awareness on the declining Irish bee population. Primary schools nationwide were sent

pollination packs and 10 lucky schools won a Bursary Prize of €5,000. There was one lucky Kerry winner Moyderwell Mercy Primary School in Tralee. "This trip was kindly organised by Stephen and Pat O'Connor from Killarney Honey," Denis Tucker, Duty Manager with Daly's SuperValu, told the Killarney Advertiser. "The pupils were provided with protective clothing and got up close to the bees. They were then brought to the O'Connor's family home honey lodge where they were shown how the honey gets from the hive to the jar and onto the supermarket shelf."

Beaufort walk to remember Jamie Walkers will put their best foot forward this month when Tomies Wood in Beaufort will form the picturesque and breathtaking backdrop for a special walk to commemorate the memory of local man Jamie O’Sullivan. | By Con Dennehy Friends, family and community will gather at the scenic location on Saturday June 11 for the 'Remembering Jamie' walk, an occasion to reminisce, share stories and remember a young man that made an indelible impact during his short and memorable life. A native of Gerah in Beaufort, Jamie lost his brave and dignified battle with cancer in 2021. Due to COVID-19 restrictions at the time, many of his friends and wider community were unable to celebrate his life, his many talents and his ability to touch the lives of so many people in a variety of ways. Now his family, parents Patricia and Simon and his brother Diarmuid, have organised a walk to remember Jamie with all funds raised on the day going to the Kerry Hospice Foundation Night Nurse Programme. “Jamie was just 31 when he left us. He had an intrepid nature, was a music lover, social animal and had a deep lust and love for life. He lived in London and Dublin, but home at the foot of the MacGillycuddy Reeks was his endearing love, a place he called home and an area that inspired him. Jamie lost his hard fought and extremely brave battle with cancer in 2021,” Diarmuid said. “His book, 'The Powerful Nan Nee', was a joyous labour of love, written during his cancer battle which he fought with dignity and passion. The book is a beautiful work, enjoyed by children and the

Linda passed away in October 2020 and Pat has been running marathons in her memory.

Last October, due to the pandemic related cancellation of the Dublin Marathon, Patrick along with his son Eric ran a 42.2km course near Killarney, supported by Patrick's daughter Alannah on the day before Linda's anniversary, to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society. Not one to rest on his laurels, Patrick has decided to run three marathons this year to raise funds for various cancer charities. Marie Meets

Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.

Change of pace for Noreen who served over 20 years in the hotel industry In 2020, the year of COVID, Killarney celebrated 250 years of tourism. Two years later, the buzz is somewhat back and the summer season has well and truly begun. I took some time to chat with Noreen McGillicuddy, popular receptionist at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel, who as of last week, now enjoys retirement. Noreen has contributed over 20 years of service to the hotel industry, having worked diligently for the Post & Telegraph (P&T) all over Ireland prior to her career in hospitality, she is possibly the only person I know who has had a sleepover in Deenagh Lodge! Here’s how it went. “Until the age of 13, I lived in Waterville with my parents with my brothers David (Dáithí) and Sean and my sisters Eileen (RIP) and Sheila (RIP). Sheila worked within the hospitality sector as a hairdresser to guests and locals at the Great Southern Hotel and the Aghadoe Heights to name just two. We lived on New Street for five years before moving to Ardshanavooly and I went to school in the Presentation Convent. I then completed a secretarial course in the Technical College and soon began working with the P&T where my first post was in Thurles, Co. Tipperary in the late 1970s, where I worked connecting calls on the telephone exchange,” Noreen began. Having heard on the news only last week how the last telephone box had been dismantled in New York and now the city operates on a WiFi basis, I thought to myself how far we have come in the world of technology in a mere 50 years. “The P&T took me to many parts of Ireland Marie, including Carrig on Suir, Waterford, Cork and Tralee and covered lots of holiday relief nationwide including the Department of Justice in Killarney on reception and telephones. One of the most interesting parts of the job

which entailed huge responsibility and confidentiality was the updating of the telephone records of Ireland." Another change that sprung to mind, the Golden Pages and Residential phone directories; a multifunctional item which might well have doubled up as a step or door stop in many homes around Ireland, now nowhere to be seen. “I enjoyed working in Tralee, it was closer to home and my family," Noreen added. "I spent 20 years there where the highlight was the annual Rose of Tralee Festival where I took part in many events. As things wound down with Eircom (formerly P&T), I was ready for a new chapter and retrained in the hospitality industry through CERT with Echard Gosh (RIP) and Angie O’Brien (Vendrick’s Restaurant) over in Kenmare specialising in Front Office. These courses were fantastic training and it touched on every aspect of tourism and hotel work, not just the course title. I made many friends and began my career within the hospitality sector with Sheila Casey, Torc Great

Southern Hotel just a stone's throw from my front door. It was a busy spot which I thoroughly enjoyed. When the Torc Hotel closed for the season, I wasn’t left idle for long and began at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa. I worked with many great managers. I began under the duo that was Pat and Marie Chawke and 20 years later, I retired from Aghadoe under Ewan Plenderleith. Over those 20 years, I worked closely with the same Front Office Manager, Siobhan O’Shea, for the majority of my time at Aghadoe. The view at Aghadoe gave me a lift daily, so it was easy to extend this wowness of Aghadoe to the guests on arrival. I have been fortunate to have worked with so many great people throughout my career in Aghadoe, many of which I can now call great friends,” Noreen explained.

DEENAGH LODGE

I asked Noreen about her sleepover at Deenagh Lodge. How unique, I thought, to have actually stayed in a house seeped in local history,

a beautiful attraction in the Demesne of Killarney National Park. “My father, Danny McGillicuddy, was from the beautiful island of Valentia and my mother, Mary Casey, was from Killarney. My grandfather, Con Casey, worked and lived in the estate and in later years became a caretaker of Deenagh Lodge. I was delighted to hear that Noreen had been recognised by her team at Aghadoe as a nominee at the recent Kerry IHF Awards event and also to hear that together with other long term staff members at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel. Noreen was gifted a beautiful watch and a day out with her colleagues. 20 years is a long time I thought, so to finish our chat I asked Noreen what advice would she have for anyone who is thinking of a career within the hospitality sector. “No two days are the same Marie. Guest satisfaction is hugely rewarding and there are many opportunities to work your way up to management within the hospitality sector. Killarney is the cream of the crop and the hub of tourism in Ireland.”

Community College students get best send off | By Michelle Crean It was an occasion to dress up as it was one of the biggest nights of their lives so far when Killarney Community College (KCC) students said farewell to school life for good. Last Thursday, the Class of 2022 came to the end of their KCC journey with an emotional graduation ceremony in the

school hall which was streamed live via Zoom to those unable to attend. Principal Stella Loughnane stated how proud she was of this particular group of students, how the adversities they overcame will stand to them in the future and most importantly encouraged everyone to follow their dreams. Students Ethan McKeon and Tia McNabb gave an entertaining speech full of emotion, nostalgia and praise for their time in

the school. And it wouldn't be a grad ceremony without the annual student awards. The roll of honour and award winners were as follows: Student of the Year went to Tia McNabb, while the Principal's Award was given to Daniel S T, School Ethos Caithlin McEnteggart, Contribution to Life of the School Ethan McKeon, and the Carmella Sheehy Bursary was received by Tadhg Quinn.

The students were treated to lunch kindly provided by the school and the culinary genius that is Noel. They hung around afterwards to take photos with loved ones, friends and teachers. "Well done to the main organisers especially Ms O'Riordan, Fr Niall for his usual words of wisdom, Ms Huges and our wonderful choir to give the Class of 2022 the best send off ever," Principal Stella Loughnane said.

Kerry soccer team to play League of Ireland for first time | By Sean Moriarty A Kerry soccer team will play in the League of Ireland for the first next season. Kerry FC will join big name teams like Cobh Ramblers and Galway United when the Division One series kicks off next February. It will be the first time that a Kerry team has played in the League of Ireland in its 101 year history. The move has been described as “a historic day for Kerry soccer”, and has been welcomed in Killarney soccer circles. The move comes after years of hard work. Kerry FC entered Under 17 and Under 19 in the National League six years ago. Under 14 and Under 15 teams are set to be announced ahead of the senior team launch meaning Kerry FC now has a full pathway from underage level right to

the National League. Full details of the exact process are set to be announced in the coming weeks. “This is massive, positive news for Kerry soccer,” Ger Nagle, chairperson of Killarney Athletic FC and vice-chair of Kerry FC, said.

Dr Valeria is one tough cookie Valeria Mashkovska applies make-up, manages a short hairstyle and looks like a Roxette soloist. Today she will go to a medical clinic to start taking in Ukrainian patients. | By Natalya Krasnenkova In Ukraine, Valeria worked as a family doctor and head of a medical centre. She is currently an assistant physician at a medical clinic in Killarney. She is preparing for an English language exam and confirmation of a Ukrainian doctor's degree. Valeria moved to Killarney at the end of March with her two children, Hlib (13) and Veronica (21). Leaving Odessa was a real challenge for her as she had to urgently evacuate her children and herself when rocket attacks began on the city. Valeria jumped in the car and ran towards the Moldovan border, the closest point to Odessa. There was no plan but to flee the war as far as possible to save her children. All she managed to grab was a few things and put a knife under the car seat which was needed to feel at least a

Of course, she would not be able to use a knife as a weapon. "I completely forgot about this knife and crossed all borders with it. I can't even imagine what it would be like if it was found at a checkpoint or at the border. When I remembered about it, I was very scared. I left it in the kitchen in Sofia, Bulgaria,” Valeria says. After crossing the border, Valeria's family took some time out to recover, and then became quite frightened because they had no money and nowhere to stay. Valeria moved to Bulgaria where she spent a week with the children.

Acquaintances in Sofia gave them housing, but not food. For several days they simply did not have anything to eat. Then Valeria got to the Red Cross, where she received some food. For several days, they have eaten only canned food. "Nobody taught us how to behave in war, nobody prepared us to drive a car for 24 hours without rest, nobody told us to pay money in case of escape," Valeria added. “You have to do all this for the first time and you can't make mistakes and risk your children. You still have to take them away from the war. ” To buy tickets to Ireland she had to sell her car. These were one-way tickets. In Killarney, on the first day of her arrival, Valeria told me: “I need to come to my senses and rest. I'm terribly tired".

New play therapy room from €3,000 donation | By Michelle Crean With over €3k raised, a Kerry counselling centre was able to build a much needed new play therapy room for younger clients.

AWARD: Emer Corridan from the Cahernane House Hotel won General Manager of the Year at the recent PREM Group Ovation Awards 2022.

Top awards for the Cahernane team

It may have been a tough two years for the hospitality industry but one local manager shone through - which is why she recently received a huge accolade. | By Michelle Crean

Emer Corridan from Cahernane House won the General Manager of the Year award for 2021/22. Close to one hundred team members from the Irish division of Prem Group gathered in the beautiful Osprey Hotel & Spa, Naas for a very special lunch. In addition, the Accommodation Team at Cahernane won an award in Teams of the Year, Darren Looney, Trainee Manager received a Leader of the Year award and the hotel also took home a recognition award for their customer service. The Irish awards event saw 27 of the PREM colleagues recognised in an individual capacity in the Ethos, Leadership and General Manager of the Year categories. Emer has been working at Cahernane House Hotel since 2016 ensuring each guest has a relaxing and memorable stay as well as leading her team to a four star standard and beyond.

Jim Murphy, CEO, and Paul Dempsey, COO presented awards in the categories of General Manager of the Year, Property of the Year, Leader of the Year, as well as the traditional PREM Ethos Award category. In addition, team members with service length above five years were recognised for their commitment to the company. "I was absolutely honoured to receive the General Manager of the Year award from my colleagues at PREM Group for 2021/22," Emer told the Killarney Advertiser. "PREM are fantastic to work for and treat all their staff with the utmost respect. I work with some other amazing General Managers who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic – so to be chosen from this fantastic group makes me very proud. I also want to thank the team at the Cahernane who are so supportive of me and always give their best in everything they do."

Muckross Garden Restaurant held a Christmas Collection in December which raised €1,776. Then the Trustees of Muckross House matched the amount bringing it up to a generous €3,600 donated towards the important cause. The funds donated means that Southwest Counselling Centre were able to build the new play therapy room for children attending their service.

"We are very fortunate to have generous customers who help us fundraise each year for our Christmas campaign for local charities and this year we are delighted to be able to support Southwest Counselling after a hard two years for many people," Restaurant Manager Colin Baker, who thanked everyone who donated, said. Jimmy Mulligan, CEO SouthWest Counselling added that the benefits of this new play therapy room is based upon the fact that "play is the child’s natural medium of self-expression". "It is an opportunity which is given to the child to “play out” her/his feelings and problems just as, in certain types of adult therapy, an individual “talks out” their difficulties."

Night of music creates an electric atmosphere | By Michelle Crean The idea was simple - to share the music of legendary women with others - and that's what local singer Grace Foley did at the weekend. The energy in the room was electric in the Gleneagle INEC Club as the stories of legendary singers were brought to life on Sunday night. "This show allows the listener to enjoy beautiful music, but to also learn a little about the lives of the women behind the songs," Grace explained. "Famous women are just like the rest of us. They love. They hurt. They laugh.

They make mistakes. They just do it under the constant scrutiny of the media and of the public. Every audience member I met said they absolutely loved the show and would come again. They felt very emotional during parts of the show and were bopping in their seats at other times! Some said that the songs really hit them right in the heart when they learned the reality of the women who sang them. She added that she was honoured to be joined on stage by an incredible team including Noel O’Sullivan on piano, Padraig Creedon on violin and narrator Laura Reidy. "I have spent many an evening sitting in front of my phone performing live on

Facebook, and I dreamt of being back on that stage. The lighting and sound set up at the INEC Club, thanks to Kieran and Denis, was out of this world. I stood on the stage and watched my idea come to life and it felt amazing. To see people enjoy the performing arts again is so special. This show could not have happened without the funding of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media’s Local Live Performance Programming Scheme with support from Kerry County Council. Though we live in a world that seems filled with sadness and struggles, an escape into music can be very soothing for the soul. I look forward to touring this very special show."

OFFICIAL OPENING: Minister for Education Norma Foley TD cutting the tape to open The Kerry Food Hub new food production units and launch of the Artisanmarket.ie with David Gleeson (Chairman), Martin Brosnan (Project Manager), Anne O’Donoghue (Secretary), Morgan McMahon (Tres), Denis Dwyer, Donal Spring and Mike McKenna (Directors), Cllr Jimmy Moloney Mayor of Kerry, Sean Linnane (NEWKD), Jerry Moloney (Regional Manager Mid West Enterprise Ireland), Deputies Michael Healy Rae, Sean Kelly (MEP), and food producers and entrepreneurs in Firies on Friday. Kerry Food Hub officially opens new food production units Kerry Food Hub, a food innovation centre, has officially opened its 10 new 1,000sq ft food grade production units and launched of the artisanmarket.ie, a multi-vendor online marketplace linking artisan food producers and professional buyers. The 10 new spaces are part of the ongoing expansion of a community project comprising of four existing production units, which employ 40 people across four local food producers. This expansion will allow new food entrepreneurs to enter the market and facilitate established brands to scale up, delivering 162 local jobs and contributing an estimated €3 million in new income to the Kerry economy. The online Artisan Market re-imagines the role of digital technology in the lo-

cal food business. The platform enables local food producers to drive new value and leverage all elements of their unique brand and products, to grow and reshape the local food ecosystem across traditional industry borders. At the heart of this digital transformation strategy is sales and information exchange between the local food producer and professional buyers in the retail and hospitality sectors. The Artisan Market facilitates an excellent opportunity to create more inno-

vative business models and bring a new era of collaboration and partnership to all stakeholders. The Kerry Food Hub is a not-for-profit community project located in Firies. It was the vision of local farmer David Gleeson who assembled a group of local social entrepreneurs to enhance employment opportunities in the region and make the community it serves a "better place to live". "This considerable investment in the local economy and the online platform signifies confidence within Ireland's indigenous food artisan industry," David Gleeson, The Kerry Food Hub Chairman and Founder, said. "The €2m investment ensures that The Kerry Food Hub will be a crucial source of

employment within our local community. The platform offers the opportunity to re-think how we support our local food producers, providing a sharper focus on what consumers and visitors want to experience, great local food. Without the investment from Enterprise Ireland, the Local community, North East West Kerry Development, Kerry County Council, Kerry Group, and Clann Credo, we would not be here today. We are truly grateful for their unwavering trust and belief in the project." The Kerry Food Hub was established in 2016 and has enjoyed a one hundred percent uninterrupted occupancy since opening. While the activities over the past number of years have worked as a very successful proof of concept, the future is exceptionally bright. Through the extensive expansion of the existing premises and the development of the Artisan Market Platform, the board of local volunteers will aim to achieve their goal of encouraging and supporting local culinary talent.

Locals are gearing up for 10th cycling challenge | By Michelle Crean It's a decade since they began their fundraising efforts and now locals are gearing up to do it all again. The 54321 Challenge was originally started 10 years ago with a team of five people over four days, completing three cycles, and climbing two mountains for one cause – local charities. This year it takes place from Thursday August 18 to Sunday 21 inclusive with 10 teams of five taking to the roads and mountains of Kerry in support of 10 Kerry charities including The Irish Pilgimage Trust, Kerry Hospice, Comfort for Chemo Kerry, ADAPT Kerry, Skellig Stars, Cystic Fibrosis Kerry, Sera Husky, HeartBeat Killarney, Alannah and Polly's Fight for Sight and Scoil Iognaid Ris. Day one begins with a cycle along the Ring of Kerry, day two they'll climb Carrantuohil, and on the third day will cycle from Killarney to Cahersiveen via the Ballaghasheen Pass and then climb Cnoc Na Tobair. And if that isn't enough to tire them out they'll spend their final day cy-

cling 70km on the Skellig Ring. "There will also be a number of Spinathon Days and we would be delighted to welcome volunteers to participate," TJ O'Connor said. The first will take place on Saturday July 30 in Listowel, Killorglin, Dingle, Cahersiveen. The second on Sunday August 14 in Killarney, and on Saturday August 27 in Tralee. The Challenge has raised almost €302,000 to date supporting a number of very deserving Kerry charities, he added. "After the last few years, we are delighted again to be able to welcome back a greater number of participants many of those have done the challenge a number of times previously and are delighted to join in on the 10-year celebrations. Our aim this year is to try to raise €100,000 - optimistic we know, but we also know that people are good and they will be behind us all the way. All Roads lead to Killarney for Ireland BikeFest

All roads lead to Killarney this June Bank Holiday weekend as the town gears up for the return of Ireland BikeFest – the country’s largest, free open motorcycle festival.

Headquartered at the purpose-built Bike Village on the grounds of The Gleneagle Hotel, Ireland BikeFest kicks off today (Friday) and runs for the whole bank holiday weekend. Festival highlights include guided rideouts along Kerry’s most famous touring routes including the Ring of Kerry, the Skellig Ring, Caragh Lake and the Dingle Peninsula, marshalled by Harley-Davidson Owners Groups (H.O.G.) from Ireland and the UK . There’s plenty of activity at the Bike Village too, including retail stands and traders, merchandise, the Harley-Davidson Experiential Zone, food stalls and lots of family fun. One of the biggest attractions, the custom bike show and awards ceremony, is set to take place on Sunday. All makes and models are invited to take part. Categories include the Best Bike in the Show, the People’s Choice Best in Show, Best Chopper Prize, Best Trike, Best Classic, Best Special Build, Best Paint and new for this year, Best Adven-

ture Bike. “Fáilte Ireland is pleased to support this year’s BikeFest as it returns to Killarney," Ciara Sugrue, Head of Festivals at Fáilte Ireland, said. "Events such as this are a brilliant opportunity for visitors to experience Ireland’s heritage and culture while taking in some of Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way’s spectacular scenery. “Festivals and events are a key component of Ireland’s tourism offering and they provide unique and compelling reasons for a visitor to choose a destination. They also have the ability to drive footfall for local businesses, supporting jobs and revenue generation. Festivals such as BikeFest 2022 play an important role in the recovery of the tourism sector for Killarney and its surrounding areas.” The ultimate spectacle is the Sunday morning parade where hundreds of all brand motorcycles rumble through the streets of Killarney before returning to the Bike Village for an afternoon of live entertainment and more festivities.

Colourful week for St Brigid’s Secondary School | By Michelle Crean One local school has been successful in attaining two very important flags by focusing on the environment and promoting the positive mental health of all students. St Brigid’s Secondary received their Amber Flag for several more years and their Green Flag and certificate this week. The Amber Flag team is run by both teachers and students from all year groups, and supported by Pieta House to encourage students to raise awareness of the stigmas that exist in their environments and the stressors on the mental and emotional well-being of those in their school community. Another aspect of this initiative is in raising awareness for those in need. Many fundraisers have been successfully led and run by students this year for the following organisations: Kerry Mental Health, Irish Air Ambulance, Kenya Education Project, Send a Sick Child to

Lourdes, Ukrainian Crisis Appeal and Daffodil Day. This year, an area of need recognised by the Amber Flag committee was the lack of communication between students due to social distancing, mask wearing and having to remain in their class groups. Therefore, with the easing of restrictions, every Friday different year groups were given the chance to meet in the assembly area for a tea/coffee and a chance to chat. Green Schools Coordinator Sheree Murphy said it’s the school’s Fifth Green Flag that they have been awarded for their work in promoting long-term, whole-school action for the environment. “To receive this flag they worked on the theme of Biodiversity while still not forgetting their previous themes of Litter and Waste, Water, Energy and Travel. Green Schools is a student-led programme with involvement from the wider community which we are delighted to be involved in.”

Them bones, them bones, need calcium! This week's article is Part Two in our series on the effects of ageing on our bodies and what we can do about it. Last week we delved into arthritis and learned a little about the condition and how it will impact many of our lives. This week, we’re looking at osteoporosis. Everyone remembers that TV advert from the '80s with that freaky looking wooden man singing “Them bones, them bones, need calcium!” He wasn’t wrong, solid nutrition with a healthy dose of calcium is vital to bone health, but so too is stress. When we think of bones, we often think of a “fixed”, hard structure that just remains the same. However, bones are a living organ, in a constant state of degeneration and regeneration. Osteoporosis is a condition that affects one in four women and one out of every six to seven men. It is characterised by decreased bone mineral density causing an increased likelihood of fracture. 20% of men and 37% of women will die after fracturing their hip and many who suffer a fracture are likely to re-fracture. For people who have osteoporosis, a fracture can cause a downward spiral of avoiding activity, becoming deconditioned, and then becoming more susceptible to a future fracture. Fortunately, there are ways to safeguard against this significant bone density loss. Did you know that each time you do a relatively heavy squat your bones bend ever so slightly and a signal is sent within the bone to build more bone? It's absolutely amazing what our bodies can do, but the bone requires a sufficient stress to adapt, remodel and, over time get stronger.

WEIGHT TRAINING

Therefore, weight training should be a central tenant of anyone’s health and fitness regime. How you do it is mostly up to you, but I would advise seeking out a qualified professional first. If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia (which can be simply viewed as a potential precursor to osteoporosis) you should seek out a physiotherapist first who would typically either devise

an exercise programme for you that contains progressive resistance i.e. weights or work that increases gradually, or they would refer you out to a suitably qualified exercise professional.

WHAT WOULD THIS PROGRAMME LOOK LIKE?

Typically it would include two sessions per week with at least one exercise per body part and its core would include some form of compound exercise, such as a squat. For people with osteoporosis but without fractures: at least 50 moderate impacts a session i.e. jogging, low level jumping, and hopping are recommended and should be interspersed with walking activities. These are just guidelines, and should of course be adjusted depending on the individual. “But I’m healthy enough and go walking most days” Walking and other forms of cardiovascular exercise such as cycling and swimming are great, the benefits for your cardiovascular system and your overall happiness and well-being are well documented. However, these exercises fail to produce significant increases in bone density in most people as they don’t provide enough of a “loading stimulus” (stress to the bone) to stimulate bone growth. If you are concerned about the impacts of osteoporosis or are currently diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis, Activate runs a twice weekly strength programme which is devised and coached by Sam Treharne (CORU registered physiotherapist) which might be suitable for you. Eco conscious students win environmental awards | By Michelle Crean Their projects were all about raising environmental awareness so it was no surprise when students were awarded for their hard work. Girls from the Transition Year class in St Brigid's Secondary took part in the ECO UNESCO finals winning three senior category awards and two Highly Commended awards. ECO-UNESCO’s Young Environmentalist Awards (YEA) is an all-Ireland environmental programme that recognises and rewards young people who raise environmental awareness and improve the environment. Usually the finals take place in Dublin but this year they were held online. The five successful groups included Senior Eco Art and Design winners Abbie O'Sullivan, Eabha Rudden, Anna Moynihan and Lauren O'Mahony with their project "Save the Bees'. Senior Waste winners were Aoife O'Donoghue, Emma Horan, Molly O'Donoghue, Saoirse O'Brien and Jessica Flynn with their project title 'Lesser Litter'. Stroke victim to run Women’s Mini Marathon this weekend A mum-of-two who mistook her stroke for a hangover, is gearing up for a 10k to thank the medical teams which helped her reclaim her life. Hairdresser Francesca Murray (45), suffered paralysis on her right side and lost her ability to walk after the terrifying emergency in Kerry but has gone from managing a few steps by her hospital bed to training for this weekend’s Women’s Mini Marathon. Her stroke was spotted by her Kerry-based childhood friend – a nurse who called emergency services, sparking a dramatic helicopter-airlift to Cork University Hospital (CUH). “It was supposed to be my friend Natasha Flynn’s wedding but she cancelled because of COVID and 30 of us went down to Kerry in June 2020 to celebrate anyway,” Fran, from Ballyfermot in Dublin, said. “We had a session in her house in Ventry and went to bed. I got up, felt a little groggy and decided to have a painkiller and went back to bed. Even getting sick a short time later was no different to a bad hangover.” When Fran deteriorated and began slurring her words, bride-to-be Natasha, a Tralee-based nurse, called 999 and she was airlifted by a Coastguard crew to CUH, beginning a lengthy process to learn how to walk again and recover her eyesight. “I couldn’t speak, I had right-side paralysis and couldn’t move, I couldn’t swallow, had to be spoon-fed and had a catheter in,” Fran added. “I remember the doctors around the bed saying I had had a stroke. It was horri-

ble. But what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. It gave me a whole different outlook on life. They [medical teams] said they had no way of telling at the time how permanent the damage was.” In CUH, Fran’s care was managed by the stroke and physiotherapy teams as she gradually rebuilt her strength, underwent speech therapy but also battled extreme fatigue and the stress of restricted movement. “I don’t think I understood the severity of it. They had me walking from one end of the bed to the other, then progressing to the corridor, I’d only manage a few steps before I had to rest. Losing my peripheral vision meant instead of walking straight, I’d walk to my right.” She spent almost a month in CUH before being transferred to St James’s in Dublin

and now only relies on medication as part of her recovery. “I’m nearly there. Now it’s like I’m working on myself, I’ve joined a gym and I’m reclaiming my life,” said the stylist in Manor Hair Studio in Palmerstown. “You have to remember how lucky you are to have each day. I decided to do the mini-marathon on June 5 to raise funds for CUH Charity because CUH are the ones that got me walking again.” Fran’s experience had another positive spin-off – her daughter Jasmine (25), is embarking on a nursing career after being closely briefed by medics on her mum’s progress. Glen Arrigan, one of Francesca’s Clinical Nurse Specialists at CUH, which sees more than 600 stroke patients a year, described her recovery as “incredible”. Lifeguards begin duty on Kerry beaches this weekend There will be lifeguards on duty on all Blue Flag Beaches in Kerry at weekends beginning this Bank Holiday Weekend. This will increase to seven days per week on all of those beaches from the beginning of July with 41 lifeguards, who are fully trained, on duty on Kerry beaches

It measured 175cm in diameter and was made to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Britain's Got Talent TV show. It took 160 eggs, 8kg of dark chocolate and 15kg of orange jelly - the equivalent of 6,557 regular-sized Jaffa Cakes - and over 11 hours from start to finish at the McVitie's innovation bakery in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. "It was an absolute pleasure to partner with McVitie's to beat the record I set five years ago, it was great to celebrate the 15th birthday of Britain's Got Talent with such an iconic cake," she said. "I hope audiences watching the show at the live semi-finals enjoyed tucking in and celebrating the contestants this year." The baby, whose gender is still unknown, was born to mother Talyta and father Matheo after a gestation of six months. The public can view the baby sloth in the Tropical House, which recently reopened to the public after closure due to the pandemic. Matheo, who is four and a half yearsold, was transferred from Wilhelma Zoo, Stuttgart, Germany, to Fota Wildlife Park in 2019. Its mother Talyta, who is threeyears-old, came from Papiliorama Swiss Tropical Gardens to Fota Wildlife Park in November 2020. “Fota Wildlife Park is delighted to announce the birth of a baby sloth," Lead Ranger, Julien Fonteneau, said. "Not only does the wildlife park have great success breeding the fastest land animal and the tallest land animal in the world, and now also with the world’s slowest moving animal, the sloth. “Due to the nocturnal nature of the sloth, getting a glimpse of the baby can be elusive. Young sloths will cling to their mother’s belly for approximately five weeks until they have the strength to move on

their own. The little one is already pulling at leaves and other foods we give to the adults, although not leaving the mother's safety on its own yet.” Sloths are native to South America and eat, sleep, mate, and give birth from their upside-down position high among the branches. Sloths are the only mammals whose hair grows in the opposite direction from the hair of other mammals. To accommodate their upside-down lifestyle, the hair parts in the middle of the belly and grows upward towards the back. The hair on the face points upward, allowing water to run off during rainstorms. The only time sloths descend to the forest floor is to go to the toilet, which they do about once a week. To move to a new area of trees, sloths often have to wait for the forest to flood, which facilitates swimming to a new resting site. Their diet primarily consists of various leaves, stems, buds, and a selection of fruit, but insects are also consumed. Predators such as jaguars and ocelots, harpy eagles, and anacondas pose a threat to sloths in their native habitats. They defend themselves with their sharp claws and teeth, and if required, sloths can move quickly through the trees to evade capture.

Dolphin's home visit after floods A dolphin in Brazil found himself making a home visit to a local family after being displaced during floods in the area. The unusual visitor was welcomed and petted by a local family in recent days following heavy rain and floods in the Amazonas area. A clip is going viral on social media showing the family, including young children, feeding the dolphin and pet its nose, as it willingly hangs out in their flooded house. Dolphins love to interact with people and this type of interaction is known to be common for the area.

Poet launches book about dementia Listowel Writer’s Week 2022 features Mary Kennelly and her latest book of poetry, 'Into The Grey'. The launch takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at 1pm in the Kerry Writer’s Museum and all are welcome. ‘Into the Grey’ is a collection that follows Mary's journey living with the impact of dementia on her two uncles, Fr John Kennelly and poet Brendan Kennelly. It is a journey that will be familiar to many families in Ireland today. Over 30 families receive a dementia

diagnosis each day. The poetry book remembers and celebrates those who are lost to the grey of dementia. It also celebrates their families and all who care for them. All proceeds will go to Aras Mhuire Nursing Home in Listowel and Our Lady of Fatima Home Tralee. If you would like to buy a copy of this book, or to help either nursing home with the sale of this book, please email info@arasmhuirenursinghome.com or admin@fatimahome.com, or mary@ marykennelly.com.

Motor club makes young rally fan’s day Killarney and District Motor Club made one rally fan’s day by bringing the Rally of the Lakes to him. In the build-up to the 2022 event, the club became aware of a young man from Coachford, County Cork who was unable to attend the rally stages as he was in Crumlin Children’s Hospital. Dylan Finnegan is a massive Rally of the Lakes fan and the team worked to make sure he could get a rally experience.

Clerk of the Course Darren McCormick and PRO Ivan Hurley presented Dylan with some very unique gifts connected with the rally including custom printed door panels, driver cards, and an M Sport Ford rally jacket kindly donated by Paul Nagle, rally hats and programmes. “It may be a small gesture, but the team here in Killarney were delighted to be able to bring the Rally of the Lakes to Dylan,” said McCormick. “We hope to see him in Killarney for the 2023 edition.”

Nagle's helmet fetches €25k at charity auction Paul Nagle’s rally helmet has sold for a staggering €25,000 at a charity auction. Nagle offered the helmet up for auction as part of the Déjà Vu celebration of Kerry motorsport that took place in Tralee and Dingle over the weekend with the funding now going to two good causes, Fossa GAA Club and Recovery Haven Cancer Support. Kerry Motor Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and the Déjà Vu road run was the flagship event in the year-long celebration. Rally stars like current World Rally Championship contender Craig Breen and fivetime WRC event winner Kris Meeke participated in a tour of famous West Kerry rally stages on Saturday. Other well known drivers in the 150-strong entry list included multiple Irish champion Austin MacHale and former European Rally Champion Patrick Snijers from Belgium. After the road run, 300 people attended a gala dinner where the items were auctioned off at the event’s headquarters, The Rose Hotel. These included paintings of famous rally drivers, motorsport trips to museums and, of course, the helmet which was

Time to turn your attention to the living room Now that your kitchen is ready for viewings after our last article, we turn our attention to the family living room. In many homes, the living room is the first that potential purchasers see once they step into your home. It is a much trafficked room within the house and presents many challenges to keep it clean and tidy for property viewings. Firstly, let the light in. Open back those curtains and pull up those blinds. Net curtains – get rid! It is vital to allow as much natural light as possible into your living room. Most curtains can be safely laundered at home but always check the label. Good quality heavy duty curtains and drapes will require dry-cleaning. At the very least give them a good dusting. Timber blinds can be dusted as they hang. This is your chance to declutter your living room. So what should remain?

The living room suite of furniture, coffee table and lamps. If you have a tiled/timber floor consider a large rug if you have one. Strategically place a home interiors or self help book on the coffee table. If you have a bookshelf, make sure it is well stocked and well balanced in terms of book sizes on each shelf. If you have artwork on the walls, fantastic. Make sure you dust them down as well as the book shelves. Don’t forget to dust the television. Make sure you clean all the glass on display cabinets, picture frames, glass doors and particularly the glass door on the stove. Move the furniture to the middle of the room and dust all the skirtings. Move onto the soft furnishings; sofas, throws, cushions. These can be dust gatherers – make sure to give them the once over. Continue the dusting to the bookshelves, light/lamp shades (make sure they are off when cleaning). Best to use a slightly

damp cloth when dusting surfaces. Next you want to make it shine. Once your wood furniture has been dusted, polish it using a lint-free cloth and rub along the grain to leave a nice shine. Get the Windolene out to get those living room windows sparkling. Another simple home solution is white vinegar and water. If you have an open fireplace make sure it is cleaned out and reset. Same goes with an insert stove. Vacuum the entire area including furniture. If you have hard floors, mop them immediately after vacuuming. Don’t skip the finishing touches after spring cleaning your living room. You’ll want to rehang your curtains of course, but also take the time to neatly fold any throw blankets you laundered and arrange your books neatly on the shelves. Your living room is now looking better than it ever has, ready to welcome potential purchasers with open arms.

How to replace a lost share certificate If a share or stock certificate is lost or accidentally destroyed the shareowner will need to give an undertaking to the issuing company that the certificate has been lost, and not charged or assigned, before the company registrar can issue a duplicate. This undertaking also requires the shareowner to indemnify the registrar against any loss arising out of the issue of a duplicate certificate. The issuing company will require an insurer to join in the undertaking as a guarantor. The undertaking does not relieve the shareowner from their obligation to

make good any future loss incurred by the insurer as a result of them joining in the indemnity. Usually the following information would be required in order to issue an indemnity: • A completed proposal form • The share indemnity form that is pro-

vided by the registrar • Proof of identity • Proof of address Confirmation from your solicitor and/or bank may be required to confirm that the share certificates are not held in trust. The cost of providing the indemnity is based on the amount of the shares and the share price on the day of quotation. At Healy Insurances, we have vast experience in this area and can provide the service and advice should you need to replace lost share certificates.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL Springboard courses provide excellent opportunities to upskill

Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Help reduce cellulite Needless to say we all know what cellulite looks like, but there are many ways to reduce its appearance and help us look and feel better about it. Yes, people often assume it's down to a weight issue but it is associated with diet and exercise. It can affect all ages, male and female. There are many ways to help reduce and eliminate it. Nothing can substitute eating a healthy diet and getting enough exercise. Just as with other signs of ageing, cellulite is best managed first and foremost by focusing on maintaining a healthy weight long term. But certain topical treatments may help it become less noticeable and improve skin’s overall appearance, if used regularly. Dry body brushing is one technique to try by brushing upwards every day towards the heart for increased blood circulation. Using anti-cellulite products can help

if you are doing regular exercise and watching your diet, but if you feel you need a boost to get you headed in the right direction, there is a few different salon treatments that can be of benefit. The Universal Contour Body Wrap is a great treatment which results in inch loss due to the detoxing effect of the sea clay or also the Electro Cellulite Massage rollers (ECM) by CACI Machine, which is a 12-session course over four weeks, this is recommended for desired results. Pilates is always an amazing lifestyle choice. Having the toning tables for the past 30 years in Killarney, we are lucky to hear the amazing results from our clients past and present. Some have even been with us since we started! The male and female reviews have reported reduced cellulite with weekly appointments, improved posture, increased energy and mostly reduced cellulite. To book an appointment or to find out more information, call 064 6632966.

Give your eyes a youthful and invigorated look The eyes are the window to the soul so if that is the case, what does our undernourished, fatigued eye zone say about us? This sensitive area quickly carries the burdens of lack of sleep, signs of age and lack of hydration not to mention the plight of incoming hay fever season and the wonderful array of allergies that come with this time of year. The Spa at the Killarney Plaza, know that this area is key to a youthful, invigorated look. Our Vital Eyes Cold Stone facial, not only visibly plumps and contributes to anti-ageing for a silky smooth finish, it nurtures the most delicate part of the face. The chilled stone is fatigue fighting and wrinkle smoothing while Decléor’s unique toning eye technique stimulates micro-circulation and de-congests and

de-puffs. This transformative formula leaves contact lens wearers as well as hay fever sufferers with a dramatically brighter and youthful looking eye zone. The Vital Eyes Cold Stone Facial is the perfect pick me up for the tired and busy, and a perk up before - or after - a night out, or it can be just an opportunity to self-care for rejuvenation to this delicate area. Take some time to close your tired eyes and let us work our magic at the Spa at the Killarney Plaza. To book the Vital Eyes Cold Stone Facial for €75, contact The Spa by email at spa@killarneyplaza.com or call +353 064 662 1151. For regular skincare tips, spa news and product recommendations, follow on Instagram @KillarneyPlazaHotel or Facebook @KillarneyPlazaHotel.

The Higher Education Authority has recently announced the range of Springboard+ and Human Capital Initiative Pillar 1 courses on offer for 2022-2023 to those who are in employment, unemployed, returning to work or graduates meeting the eligibility criteria. For anyone who is seeking to develop in or change career, these courses offer a fantastic opportunity to add to or learn a new set of skills, which are in demand in the workplace. They are provided by Higher Education Institutions (HEI) nationwide with a variety of classroom based, remote or blended delivery. Springboard+ is a Government initiative offering free and heavily subsidised courses on over 300 courses at certificate, degree, and masters level leading to qualifications in areas where there are employment opportunities in the economy. These areas include ICT, engineering, green skills, manufacturing and construction, among many others. The majority of courses are flexible and part-time. The Human Capital Initiative (HCI) Pillar 1 offers 89 free and discounted full-time courses in areas such as ICT and Data Analytics, Engineering, Manufacturing and Construction. A number of courses are also available that address green skills and climate change. Courses are at graduate and postgraduate diploma level. To be considered eligible for a place on a

Springboard+ course, applicants need to be living full-time in the Republic of Ireland, have their own valid PPS Number and meet the nationality/visa requirement. Applications are now open with some deadlines in June and start dates in early July. The flexible nature of these programmes as well as their exceptional value for money mean that they will be in demand. PRAYER TO THE VIRGIN MARY

Look around your garden Lord And when he turns and smiles Put your arms around him And hold him for a while.

You may not always shine As you go barefoot over stone You might be so long together Or you might walk alone And you won’t find that love comes easy But that love is always right So even when the dark clouds gather You will be the light

O’DONOGHUE CULLOTY

MCCARTHY

In loving memory of my dear dad Jack Cronin 4 Marian Terrace, Killarney who died on the 5th of June 2003.

You’ll never be the sun turning in the sky And you won’t be the moon above us on a moonlit night And you won’t be the stars in heaven Although they burn so bright But even on the deepest ocean You will be the light

O Most Beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, Fruitful vine, Splendour of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin assist me in this my necessity. O Star of the Sea help me and show me herein you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. Amen. This prayer must be said for three days and after that the request will be granted and the prayer must be published. Thank you for favours received.

With loving thought we remember A wonderful Mom and Nan, Chris Dennehy late of Kilbrean. An angel lived among us A gift from God above She showered us with kindness And shared with us her love. She cherished every moment With the man who was her life Walking hand in hand together Facing life with all its strife. She loved her children dearly Each one a different way Nestled close within her heart Though, now, she’s far away. She’s gone to live with Jesus But, she’s here with us, today Smiling down on every one of us And telling us she’s OK. A mother holds her children’s hands for a little while, but their hearts forever. Anniversary Mass will be held in Church of the Resurrection, Killarney, 11am Sunday June 5th

The summer sun was blaring throughout this untraditional Killarney Munster final but things never really caught fire as Kerry breezed t o a comfortable 23-point victory over Limerick. MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL _______________________________________________________

Kerry

1-28 | Limerick

0-8

FITZGERALD STADIUM

Much of the pre-game talk surrounded the status of David Clifford, Kerry’s star player who was unexpectedly left out of the matchday 26. Thankfully the injury that ruled him out is not serious. In fact, it is believed that he could have played if needed and Jack O'Connor confirmed in his post-match press briefing that Clifford is likely to return to full training next week. O'Connor also admitted that Kerry would "probably prefer to get a stiffer test" than the one they got from the Treaty. Worryingly, they now have a four-week layoff before their next match: an All-Ireland quarter-final on June 25/26.

Kingdom cruise to Munster title No. 83 SLOW

Limerick were painfully slow with their restarts in the first half and their tactic of frustrating their illustrious neighbours worked - up to a point. Scores by Josh Ryan and Iain Corbett left them trailing by just two (0-4 to 0-2) with 20 minutes on the clock. Kerry found their stride thereafter, however, and three straight points by Paul Geaney, Killian Spillane, and the industrious Paudie Clifford opened up a fivepoint lead. The impressive Ryan gave the healthy travelling support something to shout about with a spectacular free from the terrace sideline but Jack O’Connor’s men finished the half in cruise control. A fisted effort by Gavin White, a beauty by Spillane, another fist by Seán O’Shea, a longrange kick by Brian Ó Beaglaoich, and a

well-struck O’Shea 45 left Limerick chasing an insurmountable nine-point deficit at half-time.

PROCESSION

The second half was a procession as The Kingdom fired over the first six points of the period. Iain Corbett popped up with his second of the day to make it a 14-point game but just seconds later Killian Spillane found himself in acres of space in front of the Lewis Road end and he made no mistake to register the first and only goal of the game. Jack O’Connor had the luxury of running his bench to give David Moran, Paul Murphy, Dylan Casey, Micheál Burns and Gavin Crowley some game time. The thirstier members of the crowd began to slip back into town with 15 minutes to go. They had the right idea.

Hard to gauge the manager’s input when any combination of Kerry players would have done the trick. David Clifford could have played if needed but O’Connor wisely gave him the day off.

Kerry enjoyed an easy win over Limerick in the Munster final. What did Jack O’Connor make of it all? Adam Moynihan was on hand to record the Kerry bainisteoir’s thoughts.

Sure, of course people will talk like that, but what can we do? We just have to play the games that are in front of us and do as good as we can. That’s for somebody else to decide that. The Kerry manager wouldn’t be drawn on the lack of competitive matches in the provincial championships

He picked up an injury against Cork. The medical advice was not to play him in this game. I’d say he’ll be doing a good share of training next week, hopefully. David Clifford’s injury is not serious, the Kerry boss confirmed

Of course, you’d probably prefer to get a stiffer test. O’Connor on the one-sided nature of the game

REACTION: Jack O'Connor is hopeful that David Clifford will be back training with the team this week. Photo: Diarmuid Greene/Sportsfile.

I’m not too concerned by the game today but I am relatively concerned about having four weeks off. O’Connor feels that next year’s championship structure will be an improvement

Killian Spillane has been patiently waiting for his chance for a while and he kicked 1-3 from play, which was good. Killian has been going very well in training and we went with a very offensive team because we felt we’d have a lot of the ball. Adrian Spillane (whom Killian replaced) has had a brilliant year for us so far and he’ll have a big part to play for us from here on in. Munster now a non-event 56

3.06.2022

Eamonn Fitzgerald gives his assessment of last Saturday’s football action, which included facile wins for Kerry and Dublin

Kerry learned little they didn’t know already after a leisurely stroll in The Park on Saturday, leaving a hopelessly outclassed Limerick side trailing in their wake in yet another one-sided Munster SFC final. 1-28 to 0-8 tells its own story and Kerry could have stuck in a few more goals. That’s a whopping 23 points defeat. Last year was quite similar. Same venue, different opposition with Cork in 2021. The Rebels suffered their biggest ever defeat to Kerry in a Munster final, losing by 22 points. And the point of it all is that the Munster

SFC is a non-event as a competitive fixture, even if the social aspect is much to be admired. Only one team stands up to challenge for the Sam Maguire. Ditto in Leinster where Dublin won their 12th Leinster SFC title in a row, defeating Kildare by 5-17 to 1-16. They struck early and often, rattling the net five times in that opening period. Out of 14 shots at the Kildare goals in the first half, they scored 12 times. That is an unbelievable return and yet they will be consigned to Division 2 football next season. All rumours as to their demise are just that, though; the Dublin Blues are out of the

blues. It only took a few minutes at Croke Park to show they’re back in business. Talisman Con O’Callaghan is back and he showed why he was missed throughout the league. He is the axis of the Dessie Farrell bid to get out of the shadows of Jim Gavin.

EARLY AND OFTEN Dublin’s goals came early and often, exposing Glenn Ryan’s defence as porous. Five goals and the game was still in its infancy. Let’s concentrate on just one goal, the first. The move started at the Cusack Stand side beyond midfield. No great danger for Kildare - yet. Ciarán Kilkenny is the bones of 85 yards from goal.

A whopping 23-point defeat. Last year was quite similar. Same venue, different opposition. The Rebels suffered their biggest ever defeat to Kerry in a Munster final in 2021, losing by 22 points. x

He has a designated marker, but where is the Lilywhite when the tide begins to turn? He is going outfield while Kilkenny takes off without the ball. The delivery was swift and accurate into the danger zone. Still no danger of a goal. Dublin have a lot to do, but they do it. Bang. The give-and-go ploy worked. How often have we seen that before as Dublin steamrolled ahead to the six-in-a-row? Start at home. It cost Kerry two All-Irelands. The standout one was when that great servant of Kerry, David Moran, failed to collect a ball at midfield. In nipped Eoin Murchan, a small guy in defence and surely no danger of scoring from his allotted position, but he has a turbo engine and the pitiful sight for

57

3.06.2022 Kerry was this ‘garsún’ sprinting through the middle and poor David Moran trying desperately hard to get back in-house before the cake of bread was burned to a cinder. Shades of Paddy Cullen and Mikey Sheehy, except the Dubs had the last laugh on this one. For all of those six All-Irelands, Dublin’s trademark goal-scoring tactic never wavered. Win possession deep in your own defence. Hold possession with close inter-passing laterally working your way up the wing, gaining valuable yards all the time. The opposition can’t even lay a hand on a Dub because they are there in numbers. Patience is their virtue until the right moment arrives. Cue the Dubs possessor to up the pace as the opposition scrambles to get close, totally unaware and unable to do anything about the other Dub backing up the man in possession. “Coming off the shoulder” is the new fancy name for this ploy. He switches into the centre and he has two choices on how to deliver the goal. Any of the three inside forwards will make a run creating space, or best of all the full forward will sprint out in front of the full back. Give and go. Kilkenny will score after his long journey, or take your pick of O’Callaghan, Costello et al. Dublin have done it to Kerry and more recently Cork did the same at Fitzgerald Stadium in the 2021 Munster final before that first water break. That is one area of leakage of Kerry goals which has been addressed successfully so far by

Jack O’Connor. Tadhg Morley has grabbed his opportunity to make the number 6 geansaí his own in the absence of the rehabbing Mike Breen. He is closing off the centre very effectively and no one gets through unimpeded. He has done very well. No doubt the drier summer ground will test him, but his closing of the ‘bearna baol’ will be crucial as the championship evolves. The successes of Morley at 6 and Jason Foley at 3 are the real reason that Kerry have only conceded one goal this year. Foley is coming good. He is a fine athlete, has plenty of pace and now has the confidence to sprint out ahead of his full forward to win possession, knowing that the backs around him are doing their primary job. That means marking their own man and providing the necessary cover to break the attacking chain and/or be ready to pounce for the broken ball. Be first to react to that spillage is crucial.

GOALKEEPER’S VISION

Goalkeeper Shane Ryan has a key role to play in these situations. He needs to see the potential danger once the ball enters his half of the field. He will be the first player to see the danger of a goal and be it Kilkenny, Murchan, Costello, or that half-Spa man, the majestic Brian Fenton. Don’t rule out the northern teams either. Ryan can call the play before the shots are unleashed. No goal opportunities. A point at worst.

Ladies put it up to Cork Even though the men’s final was a non-event, the curtain raiser was a wonderful game. Cork did win eventually 2-11 to 1-9 but a spirited Kerry side made it thoroughly enjoyable for early patrons into the Munster ladies final. As expected, Cork won, but Kerry played very well and made this a competitive contest to the end. Well done to all the players and to the management led by Declan Quill, Darragh Long, Anna Maria O’Donoghue, Geraldine O’Shea and Cassandra Buckley. Kerry had most of the early possession playing into the Lewis Road end, but their three early shots went wide, a poor return. As one would expect, Cork responded and got a firm hold on the game with Orla Finn from Kinsale causing the Kerry defence plenty of bother. Kerry were going well up until the 15th minute when Eire Óg’s Emma Cleary converted a penalty. It was a great shot and no blame to Kerry netminder Clara Butler. The Castlegregory lady gave a very confident display. That penalty put Cork ahead 1-2 to 0-3. Louise Ní Mhuircheartcaigh, Anna Galvin and Lorraine Scanlon kept Kerry in touch as Cork marked Louise, Kerry’s most experienced player, very closely. Kerry were very dependent on her to score. The Corca Dhuibhne forward did strike in the 22nd minute; Meabh

O’Sullivan the Cork keeper saved well but could only parry the ball and Louise slotted home the rebound for a badly needed Kerry goal. Kerry were right up with Cork, but the Rebelettes had a devastating period just before half-time culminating in Orla Finn’s goal. Facing that second half trailing 2-6 to 1-4 Kerry had a mountain to climb and full credit to them, they upped their game. Wing forward Danielle O’Leary (Rathmore) showed the way with an early point and we expected a Kerry revival. They had plenty of possession but inability to convert that into scores bedeviled them once more. Meanwhile, crafty Cork were picking off their points. Kerry did cut the deficit to just two points thanks to scores from Ní Mhuircheartaigh (free) and O’Leary. However, the experienced Cork side sensed the danger and added unanswered points to claim the Munster Crown once more. Looking ahead it looks to be a showdown between them and a resurgent Dublin, who avenged last year’s defeat at the hands of Meath. The Kerry ladies will be disappointed no doubt, but they have had a very successful league and on Saturday they provided this writer with a fine spectacle and put it up to Cork throughout. Kerry gave it their all, but Cork deserved victory.

58

3.06.2022

Hurlers on brink of something special The Kerry hurlers will be seeking to end their unfortunate run of Joe McDonagh Cup final defeats when they take on Antrim in Croke Park on Saturday at 4pm. The Kingdom came up just short against the same opposition in 2020 and again versus Westmeath in 2021 but hopes remain high that this will be their year. A hard-fought and unexpected victory against the Ulster side in the final group game a fortnight ago certainly gives Stephen Molumphy’s team cause for optimism. 15 points from Podge Boyle proved crucial as Kerry overcame a late Antrim fight-back in Belfast. Another brave team performance will be required if the men from the southwest are to cause another upset this time around. The reward for Kerry if they win will be a playoff against the lowest-ranked team in Munster - Tipperary - with a place in the 2023 championship at stake. The fact that Kerry will be forced to take part in this playoff match has sparked controversy. Many observers have suggested that prevailing in the Joe McDonagh

JOE MCDONAGH CUP FINAL

Kerry v Antrim Saturday at 4pm Live on RTÉ | Croke Park should automatically give them the right to play in the Munster Championship. In fact, the manager of Kerry’s opponents in Saturday’s intermediate decider is of the same mind. “I think it is something that should have been addressed before now,” Darren Gleeson – a native of Tipperary - said. “We’ve ended up in a situation where, if Kerry win the competition, they go into a play-off for something they’ve already earned. I thought that was something we’d taken out of our competitions, in the Leagues a few years ago when there were promotion playoffs. “It shouldn’t be in our games. If you win something, you should have the right to go into the next level of the competition.” If Antrim win, they will be promoted to the Leinster Championship without having to face a playoff. It certainly seems slightly unfair, but Kerry must nevertheless focus on the task at hand. A win this weekend would be a major leap forward on their ambitious journey.

TWO KERRY TEAMS THROUGH TO NATIONAL FINALS An away trip to Clare was a tough proposition for the Kerry U13 girls but this is a squad that is doing great things. Eadoin Larkin put Kerry ahead after half-time, and they were still ahead inside the last minutes, but the home side equalised. The Kerry girls and coaches regrouped and in the first period of extra time Ali Bowler hit what turned out to be the winner. Kerry will play North Tipperary in the SFAI National U13 Girls Final after they defeated Kildare 5-0. Meanwhile, the Kerry U15 boys were in Castleisland with North Dublin Schoolboys League the visitors. Kerry made a great start and two Leigh Meehan goals had them 2-0 up at halftime. The visitors pulled one back but Neal O’Shea’s goal opened the two-goal gap again. North Dublin never gave up and they hit two late goals to see the sides finish level at 3-3 at full-time. There was no further goals in extra time so onto penalties. Kerry’s keeper saved two Dublin spot kicks and successful kicks by Dawid Grebowiec, Leigh Meehan, Darragh Lynch, Mathew Rogers and Jack O’Mahony sent Kerry into the final. Limerick District or Inishowen will be the opposition. GIRL’S ROLL OF HONOUR

WRC heads for Sardinia

Paul Nagle and Craig Breen are in Sardinia this weekend. Round 5 of the World Rally Championship takes place on the gravel roads of the Italian island. The seaside rally returns to Alghero for 2022 and began on Thursday with Shakedown, followed by a brand-new single super special stage in the evening. Friday will see crews tackle two passes of four stages, including the rally’s longest, totalling 133.56km in distance. Saturday’s itinerary is similar in length, covering a distance of 131.82km across eight stages. The event will wrap up on Sunday with four final stages, including

the Power Stage, which offers additional points to those who finish in the top five. | Cronin and Galvin lead

British Rally Championship

Killarney and District Motor Club members Keith Cronin and Mikie Galvin won the Jim Clark Rally in their Volkswagen Polo GTI, and in the process took the lead in the British Rally Championship. They finished the event with a victorious margin of 47.8 seconds over James Williams and Dai Roberts in a Hyundai i20. The win gives a Cronin a major boost in his quest to draw level with the five British titles tally of record-holder, Jimmy McRae.

Garry Pearson and Dale Furniss took third spot in their Ford Fiesta, thirteen seconds behind Williams and Roberts. “It’s good to get a win in the BRC,” Cronin said. “Our pace was good in Clacton, we started well here too on Friday night, it was just a case of managing our pace then today. We weren’t going quite as quick as last night.” Meanwhile, Osian Pryce and Noel O’Sullivan were excluded from the event in controversial circumstances after they drove a portion of a stage on a punctured tyre. The Welsh/Kerry crew are refusing to comment on the matter until they have had the time to assess the full circum-

stances of the exclusion. |

Circuit of Munster

Gary Healy and Gearoid Moynihan from Clonkeen are the only all-local crew entered in Sunday’s Circuit of Munster. They will drive a Honda Civic EK4 in the Junior class. Lissivigeen teacher Elaine Ní Shé will co-drive for Alan Nesbitt. She leads the Ladies section of the West Coast Rally Championship and her competition will come from another local woman. Amy Burke is on co-driving duty for Limerick driver Hazel Shanahan in their Ford Escort.

Killarney Legion GAA LADIES UPDATE: The U10 Girls welcomed Spa to Direen last Thursday evening in the latest offering of Go Games. On a perfect evening the 24 girls got plenty of game time in and it was obvious that both their skills and enjoyment levels are improving. Well done to both girls and coaches. Our U12 Girls made the trip to Churchill last Wednesday evening.

Having been placed in a higher grade they are now facing stronger opposition but they more than held their own for the majority of the game before eventually succumbing to a stronger home side. The U14 County League, including county players, commenced on Sunday evening where our Green team had a very impressive win over Brosna/Knocknagoshel. A very productive second quarter laid the foundations for the win and not even the sunshine in the north Kerry village could outshine the second half performance as they ran out 4-17 to 0-7 winners. Next up is a home game v Kilcummin. Having already qualified for the County semi final the final round of the U16 County League was played last Thursday evening in Direen with the visit of our neighbours Dr Crokes. A blitz in the first half by the visitors saw them lead at half time but a much improved second half showing was not enough to prevent a Dr Crokes win on a 4-10 to 4-6 scoreline. The League now takes a break to allow for the Junior Cert examinations and we wish everyone well in their efforts. The semi-final will be played in late June. The Minor Girls have also qualified for the County semi-final where they will face Kilcummin. This game is fixed for Friday, July 1, again to facilitate the State Examinations.

Spa GAA KILLARNEY CLUB 7s: Our Killarney Club 7s event takes place at Spa GAA club this Saturday June 4 and Sunday June 5! Full details and tickets on sale now on www. killarneyclub7s.ie. Tickets are one sale online - €20 for a day pass or €30 for a weekend pass and U18s are free but must be accompanied by an adult. All entrants to the event, including players, must wear an entry wristband. You will get your wristband by purchasing a ticket online. The wristbands will be given at entry to the event and will be used to determine your ticket and your age. Gates are open at the event from 9.30am to 9pm Saturday and 10am to 9pm on Sunday. There has a been a huge effort from our club members and volunteers working to get the grounds ready to welcome thousands of people to Spa over the weekend and a big thank you to everyone who is helping out. Volunteers are still needed for the weekend so if anyone would be available to help out either day please contact any committee members or Deirdre on 085 1216359. All club members are urged to buy tickets and get behind this fundraiser. Looking forward to seeing you all there! NEW PHONE NUMBER for our Club Secretary Catherine Coffey – 085 8414804. MUNSTER FINALS: Congratulations to

the Kerry senior team and management on their win over Limerick in the Munster Final. Well done also to the Kerry Ladies who put in a great performance against Cork in the Munster LGFA Final. Both teams are through to the next rounds with fixtures to be confirmed.

Dr Crokes GAA CO LEAGUE DIV 1: Dr Crokes 1-11 Austin Stacks 2-10. Played on Friday last a hungrier Stacks side overcame the locals on a beautiful evening for football. Both sides missing many regulars were level at the short whistle 1-6 to 1-6 but Dr Crokes management will not be happy with first half performance kicking 7 wides. The second half was nip and tuck until a fortuitous goal from Stacks changed the complexion of the game and they ran out 2 points winners. ACADEMY: The academy returns next Saturday as normal. Boys and girls aged 4 until 11 from the Killarney area. Hurling 10 until 11 and football 11 until 12. All welcome. New members and returning members. GO GAMES: Our Go Games for Under 9s continued during the week with a trip to Milltown on Tuesday a great turn out at short notice. We had three rounds of games and we had a great time. Thanks Milltown. U12 GIRLS: We had two games last week in the county league. On Monday we played Beaufort away. In a tense game against a good home side we came away with a three point win. On Wednesday we faced a very strong Brosna Knocknagoshel team in another ding dong battle before going down to a better team in the end. The girls played very well in both games and can be proud of their efforts. LOTTO took place on May 30. Numbers drawn were 6, 8, 11, 17. Jackpot not won. 11 patrons matched 3 numbers receive €40. Jackpot for draw on June 6 will be €5,600.

Hard luck to the Kerry ladies especially Erica McGlynn and Anna Clifford on their loss to Cork in their Munster final.

U14 GIRLS: Fossa U14 girls had a great start to their Division 1 County League campaign. Half-time Fossa 2-9 Southern Gaels 1-3. Inevitably, a team as good as Southern Gaels will keep fighting and they did have a period where they closed the lead with a few quick scores. While the girls tired on a very hot day, they all kept going to end to hold on for a fourpoint win. Final Score Fossa 2-15 Southern Gaels 3-8. There will be plenty games for our large squad over the coming weeks. Thanks to referee John Purcell for facilitating water breaks due to the heat. Thanks for all the support from the sideline the girls really appreciate the encouragement. We have a bye next weekend and then play Beaufort in Rd 3. FOSSA NS: Huge congratulations to Fossa National School and all the Fossa ladies players who won the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Chiarraí Urban 2 Final today against Lissivigeen NS.

Muckross Rowing Club REGATTA SEASON: During April and May, the club was kept on its feet with a busy run of regattas. In April, the club attended two events hosted by Skibbereen RC. The first of these was a new 1km regatta held near Drinagh in Co. Cork in fantastic conditions on Saturday, April 10. This successful event proved to be the ideal warm up for the full distance 2km annual regatta also hosted by Skibbereen on the weekend of April 30-May 1. This event kicked off a four-week run

of regattas which included the Limerick, Lee and Castleconnell Regattas. The club enjoyed great success at the regattas. A main highlight was at Castleconnell Regatta where the club was the winner in 11 events with a total of 30 Muckross crews securing a top three finish. This greatly added to the silverware collected in Limerick and Cork on the previous weekends. Great credit to all our rowers, coxes and coaches for their hard work in training. Congratulations to all our medal winners. UPCOMING: After a two week break from racing, 38 Muckross crews are back on the road for the two-day Carlow Regatta taking place this Saturday and Sunday, June 4-5. Best of luck to all. Cork Regatta, Saturday-Sunday, June 25-26, National Rowing Centre, Cork. Killarney Regatta, Sunday, June 26, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club.
