Work Begins On Armagh House

Representatives from Kerry’s seven chambers who announced a new partnership agreement this week.

All seven chambers in County Kerry have joined forces this week in an historic move aimed at creating jobs, developing infrastructure and sourcing funding and investment.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce will be joined in the new group by the chambers from Tralee, Kenmare, Dingle, Killorglin, Listowel and Castleisland. Senior officials were quick to clarify that each chamber will remain autonomous and independent of each other, but that they will collaborate on key projects and support each other on local and regional issues. They will also combine resources to further support their own individual business member’s interests.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce Paul O’Neill said it was a positive move.

“We’re looking to see if there are areas that would be common to all of us,” he said.

“Infrastructure is the obvious one, as well as jobs. I think there are various things that we can work together on. It’s very early stages – we’ve just had our first initial meeting – but we think there will be strength in numbers. When there’s a common purpose, that will benefit the whole county.”

A former guesthouse located close to the town centre has been demolished to make way for a new housing development. Armagh House, which used to stand on the main Park Road near McDonald’s, was knocked on Wednesday and a new building with six one-bed apartments will be erected in its place.

The prominent bungalow had been vacant for a number of years, much to the consternation of locals who considered it an eyesore on one of the main roads into Killarney. The redevelopment project is being managed by Clúid, a not-for-profit charity which provides affordable homes to people in need. It is believed that homeless people may be housed at the site, which is scheduled for completion in 2020.

The demolition of Armagh House comes just a couple of weeks after the council announced that another abandoned dwelling, at the entrance to Pinewood estate, was to be torn down for a similar development. With many locals in dire need of housing – especially one-and-two-bed accommodation - it’s good to see the local authorities finally taking action.

As reported in the Killarney Advertiser earlier this month, Kerry County Council currently has over 536 qualified applicants on its social housing waiting list for one bedroom accommodation. There are an additional 454 applicants on the list waiting for two bedroom housing.

There is a serious lack of suitable rental properties in Killarney with many locals finding it virtually impossible to rent in the town. Business is being affected by the crisis too. As documented in these pages, employers are struggling to attract staff to the town as prospective employees are unable to find appropriate accommodation.

New developments like the ones at Pinewood and Armagh House will address a small segment of the housing crisis but a lot more needs to be done in the coming weeks and months if Killarney is to come out of this quandary.

Make Way Day Highlights Obstacles Facing Wheelchair Users Disability groups and local authorities across the country came together on Wednesday in an attempt to create awareness about some of the difficulties people with disabilities and wheelchair users face in public places.

The aim of the Make Way Day campaign is to highlight obstacles such as cars or vans parked on a footpath blocking the way, or bicycles chained to lampposts creating a trip hazard.

As these pictures show, several examples were found in Killarney town and it is hoped that highlighting the problem will lead to greater awareness among the general public.

Ring Of Kerry Funds To Help Ian With His Rehab Organisers of the Ring of Kerry Cycle have confirmed that participants raised a whopping €1.2 million for charity at this year’s event. Official charities associated with the 35th year of the event were presented with their funds at a special reception at the INEC Killarney last Friday evening.

Among the 15 main beneficiaries of this year’s event was much-loved Killarney teenager Ian O’Connell who was seriously injured when he fell from his bike last August. Ian, who is a student in St Brendan’s College, won the hearts of the nation when he appeared on The Late Late Show and shared his inspirational motto, “If I can’t stand up, I’ll stand out.”

The funds raised will go towards assisting Ian with his rehabilitation and help with giving him the support he needs.

The cycle itself in July saw over 7,000 participants from Ireland and abroad arrive in Kerry to complete the 175km cycle challenge around the scenic Ring of Kerry.

The main beneficiaries were divided into

three main groups which included Disability Support Services, Cancer and Family Support Services and Community Care. Along with the fifteen main beneficiaries that received donations, there were also twenty local communities that benefited from the event.

Each of these local communities will receive a cheque of €2,000. The local communities were heavily involved in supporting, organising and volunteering for the Charity Cycle.

“We are very proud to once again have broken the €1 million mark for very worthy beneficiaries that will utilise the funds raised in various ways to improve and expand services for people across all walks of life,” said Cathal Walshe, ROK Cycle PRO. “The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle has become an iconic event over the past 35 years and it has gone from strength to strength. This event would not be feasible if it wasn’t for the huge support from our organisers, charities and volunteers and of course the cyclists themselves who support us year after year.

We look forward to seeing you all in 2019”.

TOWNTALK 800 Million Chinese People To See Killarney Online

Mr Zhong’s itinerary included a boat trip to see Fungie, a visit to Murphy’s Ice Cream in Dingle and a stop at the Star Wars filming site on Ceann Sibéal. He then moved on to Killarney where he stayed overnight in the Muckross Park Hotel.

The visit was part of the fifth annual Images in Cities campaign, run by vivo and National Geographic, which involves bringing 16 photographers and videographers to a different destination each year. A separate group of Chinese journalists and National Geographic photographers will be visiting other locations around Ireland, including the Killarney National Park, in the near future.

The beauty of Killarney is set to reach a staggeringly massive audience in the Far East thanks to a new tourism campaign involving a top Chinese TV star.

Ren Zhong visited the town this past week as part of a new Tourism Ireland campaign in partnership with vivo (one of the biggest mobile phone brands in China) and National Geographic magazine.

Timed to coincide with the launch of a new vivo mobile phone, Ren Zhong and his crew captured footage of Killarney, Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way – using the new device - to create a video all about Ireland.

The resulting film, called ‘Be Wild’, will go live in early November and will reach at least 30 million Chinese people on social media and on one of China’s most in-

Resident Says Finan’s Road Was “An Accident Waiting To Happen” Words: Adam Moynihan As reported in last week’s Killarney Advertiser, St Finan’s Road, which links Rock Road to Lewis Road via the grounds of the vacant psychiatric hospital, has been closed to traffic.

A number of local motorists voiced their dismay at the closure, citing the town’s crippling traffic crisis as the main reason the road should be kept open.

However, one concerned reader has since contacted us to give her opinion on the matter, and it paints a very different picture.

They will also be using the new vivo phone to capture images and videos here and will share their content with over 800 million followers on social media. “Last year, we welcomed an estimated 90,000 Chinese visitors to the island of Ireland in 2017,” said James Kenny, Tourism Ireland China. “Tourism Ireland aims to grow Chinese visitor numbers to 175,000 per year by 2025. There are now two direct flights to Dublin – from Beijing with Hainan Airlines and from Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific. Given that there’s a proven direct correlation between access and growth in visitor numbers, we believe these new flights will be a major game-changer in growing visitor numbers from China.”

Killarney Retains Gold Medal Status Killarney has retained its gold medal status in the 2018 Tidy Towns competitions, with judges confirming that the town continues “to be a high achiever… and their high position is very well merited”.

While adjudicators found some litter and stained surfaces, residential areas were generally “in good order” and added that a “great impression of care and pride” was given throughout the town. Killarney received an overall grade of 334 out of 450, a six-point improvement on last year.

Here is her letter: I am a resident in the area and as I’m sure you can appreciate there are two sides to every story. The other side is this road was being abused and was an accident waiting to happen! It was not built or meant for heavy traffic.

St Finan’s Road is and always was a private road. However, pedestrians were always allowed access, to which they availed.

It’s a lovely walk and very popular for people taking a stroll and people walking their dogs, but it had become extremely dangerous and the pedestrian was always having to step out of the way to oncoming traffic. Anyone walking on that road was taking a chance as traffic was travelling at high speed in both directions on a very narrow road.

In a built up area and with children playing it was too dangerous and their safety is paramount. It would be a horrible story to be writing about a person being killed, all because someone wanted to get home five minutes earlier, using a road that they shouldn’t have been driving in the first place.

Killarney Musical Society to stage Sound of Music

Celtic Girls Are Going For Glory

Orna Cleary O’Shea, Bríd Callaghan, Peter Cook, Órlaith Monks, Bronagh Murphy, Peter Kennedy, Phil Spillane, Irene Hurley, Pádraig Creedon, Noel Lennon and Pam Brosnan at the launch of Killarney Musical Society’s latest production, The Sound of Music.

We had a massive cast call into The Chatroom this week as the U-12 girls from Killarney Celtic popped in to have a chat about an upcoming tournament that they’re involved in which is happening up in Dublin next weekend. The girls were joined by manager Alan O’Sullivan, PRO Ramona Keogh Burchill and coach Paul Vermiglio.

The girls will be competing in the FAI Women’s U-12 National Cup Finals and after scoring 123 goals and only conceding one throughout the whole season, we think the girls have an amazing shot at bringing home the trophy!

The girls were in great form and Niamh even gave us a demonstration of their celebration routine! The girls were also asked to pick out their favourite player from the Killarney Celtic men’s senior team as well as a few more hard-hitting questions! The town will be alive to the sound of music this coming February when the talented people at the Killarney Musical Society stage their 34th production. Preparations are officially under way for The Sound of Music, based, of course, on the much-loved 1965 film and 1959 stage musical of the same name.

The new production team for the hotly anticipated show includes wellknown choreographer and director Peter Kennedy and expert musical director Noel Lannon. Rehearsals will take place over the coming months and the production will be staged in the INEC on February 26, 27 and 28.

If the Killarney Musical Society’s latest efforts are anything to go by, it promises to be another great spectacle.

Culinary genius Chad Byrne has been named Head Chef of the Year at the annual Hotel and Catering Review Gold Medal Awards. Chad, who is the Head Chef at The Brehon, accepted the prestigious award at a lavish ceremony at Lyrath Estate in Kilkenny.

The well-respected chef is one of the minds behind the innovative Chef Collaboration project, which is aimed at developing (and retaining) young talent.

There was also cause for celebration for employees and management at The Brehon’s much-loved spa as the Angsana was named Ireland’s Best Four Star Hotel Spa Experience.

Cars Disturbing The Peace On New Market Lane Words: Anne Lucey There is much talk about traffic in Killarney and rightly so. I had a lovely family meal in a lovely restaurant on New Market Lane (also known as milk market lane or the old slaughterhouse lane) last Saturday night and it reminded me of something very European with its tables and Copenhagen style blankets if you wanted to sit outside.

The lane is beautifully paved and is becoming a gourmet centre. It has direct access from the Glebe car park. So why, then, is there a car park and why are cars allowed up and down, disturbing the peace of talkers and strollers on a night out?

A fountain in the centre would perfect the atmosphere. By the way, this is a question raised by Cllr Grady - what happened to all the fountains for Killarney? We need to take the cars out of much of High Street, and we especially need to take them out of places surrounded by car parks.

Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

County Council Showing Scant Regard For Killarney That budget strategy and LPT (local property tax) meeting in Tralee on Monday, where management’s and Fine Gael’s call for a 5 per cent increase over the baseline was rejected, made for interesting listening.

The increase would have brought an extra €700,000 on the €13.8 million netted by the council from the tax and the extra financial contribution would be on average between €4.50 and €11.25 per house.

Not that the verbal contributions reached Shakespearean heights, but I was reminded of that Shakespearean quote from the very politic Polonius in Hamlet “by indirection find direction out.”

For anyone with half a brain, between the lines and in the telling was the story of a clear division between the wholehearted attention Tralee/Listowel are getting and, dare I say it, the scant regard for Killarney.

Eight of the ten Fianna Fáil councillors voted against the increase sought by FG/management, as did the four Sinn Féin councillors. Independents were split on the vote.

Tellingly, the two Fianna Fáil councillors who broke ranks were from the Listowel area. They were clearly delighted with the works being undertaken in greenways and bypasses and roads and tourism investment and the various improvements in north Kerry villages and in Listowel.

Tralee councillors seemed equally chuffed. And even some of the Tralee councillors who voted against the increase had high praise for “their” council.

And it is very much “their council”. This is a council for Tralee and north Kerry, it is not doing near enough for Killarney and I base my case, without fear of contradiction, on the very document presented to the meeting where the infrastructural projects of both towns were presented in black and white and in just as stark contrast.

Sinn Féin’s Pa Daly, voting against, went so far as to say “all the good the council do is in this document”. He gave examples of the Tralee greenway now going ahead, the homeless unit, and other works. And tellingly, the Tralee councillor said the council are “the primary driver of festivals in the county”. Of course he was referring to the heavy sponsorship and backing of

the Rose of Tralee, of the annual food and bloom festivals, not to mention that every single tourism attraction in Tralee is propped up by council staff and council money.

Finally, Cllr Daly lavished praise on the multi-million euro works by the council in Tralee town centre.

There was clear sense at the meeting that Killarney and south Kerry were not happy. Yet only half of the Killarney councillors voted down the increase.

However, Cllrs Cronin and Healy-Rae voted against, as did Cllrs Culloty and Kelleher.

“For the last five years it’s talking, talking, talking and nothing happening,” Cllr Cronin said, referring to lack of progress on everything from car parking to potholes.

In the budget strategy documents, a list of projects per municipal district were outlined. But these are the same projects that have been on the agenda with years, Killarney councillors said.

This is the list Killarney councillors were presented with for the town area: Commencement of the Lewis Road/ Áras Phádraig master plan redevelopment (appointment of a project manager underway); Cultural Centre development (tender process being finalised); Progression of the Lough Leane Loop (overall route corridor

being finalised); the Flesk Walkway (project shovel ready); Rock Road Car Park (planning approved by members, potential funding application under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund).

Now remember that Killarney contributes more in rates than Tralee, not to mention the €800,000 the Killarney car parks yield to the council.

Now compare the project list for Tralee. These are projects where teams of council officials are involved in getting funding and drawing designs etc; there is massive consultation and huge council and State money and council time, all council led and look closely at my underlined words between the brackets: Island of Geese (master plan on display, demolition works ongoing); Town Centre Enhancement Scheme (Phase 1, Denny St and the Mall complete); Phase 2 Russell Street etc (preliminary design and costings complete); Tralee-Fenit Greenway (shovel ready); Tralee Fenit Route (phase 1 completed in 2018; land acquisition being advanced); Mitchel’s Regeneration (85 per cent of overall project completed, housing units near completion others advanced and further facilities being advanced).

There is only one thing shovel ready in Killarney, everything else here is “-ing” and being – on the long finger in other words - and there is little or nothing actually “-ed” or completed.

Given the black and white document in front of their eyes, given the strongly worded statement from the normally cautious Killarney Chamber of Commerce and Tourism only last week that the town’s whole tourism industry is threatened by the lack of progress by the local authority on relief roads and car parks, how could three Killarney townish councillors, Cllr Michael Gleeson, Cllr Donal Grady and Cllr John Sheahan vote to take even more money out of the pockets of Killarney people no matter how little?

That’s a question that must be asked on the doorsteps around the town next May, methinks. Local councillors are not global ambassadors. With the loss of the town councils they are not even county representatives - they are above all elected locally to represent their local areas.

Their vote is their power – and especially so when the case for Killarney is so strong and so stark. Cllr Grady himself said, “We are not getting our fair share in Killarney and I apologise to no-one for saying that.”

Cllr Gleeson spoke loftily about the fundamental nature of Irish politics and the “aggrandisement of power” and also spoke about the stagnant Lough Leane Loop; Cllr Sheahan spoke about there being no dent in the projects in Killarney and the need for outdoor staff. But all three voted for the increase.

Industry Re-Launch Evening At The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens The five-star Dunloe Hotel & Gardens, located close to one of Ireland’s most iconic tourist destinations, the Gap of Dunloe, hosted its official industry re-launch event on Friday, September 21, after undergoing a stunning, 18-month renovation of the restaurant, bar, reception, lobby and lounge spaces as well as the enhancement of the gardens and car park.

Guests were treated to a VIP experience which launched with a red-carpet arrival followed by an evening of entertainment, drinks and dining from the new menu.

The evening commenced with a champagne and canapés reception in the brand new Upper Lounge area while pianist Maurice Collagen serenaded guests before they were seated for dinner in the refurbished Grill Restaurant.

Michael Brennan (Managing Director, Killarney Hotels Ltd) and David Cronin (Group Sales and Marketing Manager, Killarney Hotels Ltd) addressed guests on the evening, thanking them for their support and welcoming them to the newly refurbished Dunloe Hotel & Gardens, before a spectacular performance from Anúna, Ireland’s national choir.

Last Sunday saw 15 crews take part in the Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club-organised Treasure Hunt. They started from Faha Court and covered a 45-mile route that took them around the Killarney area, including Aghadoe, Glenflesk, Barraduff, Kilcummin and Ballyhar.

Winners of the Vintage Class category were Brendan and Angela Lynch in a 1967 Morris Minor. John and Hazel Coffey placed second in a 1990 BMW 320 with Vincent and Gobnait Carmody coming third in a 1976 MGB Roadster. Winners of the Modern Class were the Wharton family from Farranfore in a Nissan, Diane Healy and Jason Russell finished second in a Honda and the O’Sullivan family from Gortbee in Beaufort finished third in a Subaru. An enjoyable day was had by all with perfect conditions weather-wise.

Just over 20 tractors took part in the run which started from the same venue and both vintage and modern machines took part. The route took them through the Rockfield, Listry and Beaufort area with a stop at the recently opened Listry Creamery Experience to take in a tour of the workings of the old creamery, which has been converted to a museum and tea rooms. Both the Treasure Hunt and Tractor Run finished back at Faha Court for refreshments and prizegiving. The club would like to thank Paul Garfield and team at the Creamery Experience and Seán, Aoife and Julie and everyone at Faha Court for the hospitality shown to all the participants and competitors in both events. The club would also like to thank all members, participants and competitors for supporting both events and are looking forward to the next outing.

Killarney Comes Together For Culture Night

The people of Killarney came out in force last Friday night to celebrate Culture Night at various events held around the town. Almost 6,000 people participated across the county, the highest numbers recorded since the event’s inception over a decade ago.

Here in Killarney, artists, arts organisations and arts centre offered up a diverse selection of free events late into the night.

The evening was supported by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the Creative Ireland programme in partnership with Kerry County Council.

Culture Night started early at St Brigid’s Secondary School, the first school in the county to put on a special event for Culture Night. “We have a wonderful young group of creative minds in our school and it is not often that their hard work, dedication and high standards in art is seen outside of the classroom, so we were delighted to be part of Culture Night”, said teacher Alice Quilter. Fiona Archibald and Kate McEroy also worked on the event at the school.

The work of professional artists was on view at Kerry Visual Arts Showcase at Government Buildings on the New Road, in a show that runs until October 16. The showcase is an opportunity for the recent work of visual artists to be shown in Kerry and all work is for sale. Killarney’s events were very well attended again and joining the line-up this year was pianist Criostóir Ó Loingsigh with an event that linked the music listened to in Killarney House to the people who lived in the great house through the centuries.

Kerry Diocesan Youth Service received very positive acclaim for the creative and cultural work of the ‘Rooted’ project which links to young people living in direct provision in Kerry, while a great vibe was left across the town and out to venues like the Brehon and Muckross House and farms who did not event have standing room available with the interest shown in their events.

So… What Exactly Is A Geodesic Dome?

MakermeetIE’s “Ginormous Geodesic Dome” construction is well under way and we have been to visit them to see what makes up a Geodesic Dome - ginormous or otherwise!

Geodesic domes first appeared shortly after World War I and one of the first examples was constructed in Jena, Germany in 1926 and named “The Wonder of Jena”. See (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geodesic_dome) for more information.

There are many ways and methods to make a Geodesic Dome and MakermeetIE are building theirs from three basic components. There are the Spars - made from bamboo (lightweight and strong); the Heads - made from PVC pipe and washers; and the central component - the Hubs - sourced from (https://buildwithhubs.co.uk/).

Chris from MakermeetIE tells us that their Geodesic Dome will be made from: 165 spars in 3 different lengths; 330 heads; and 61 hubs. The finished construction will be over 18 feet in diameter and 7 feet tall. It uses both equilateral and isosceles triangles and mathematical concepts such as the Fibonacci number, the Golden Ratio and the constant radius.

Killarney Racecourse Celebrates Another Great Year

The hard-working employees at Killarney Racecourse gathered this past week to celebrate another great year of racing at the much-loved Ross Road landmark.

Earlier this year it was revealed that the Killarney Races are worth approximately €8 million to the local economy so the importance of the work done down at the racecourse certainly can’t be underestimated.

The meets are going from strength to strength and the efforts of the staff were rightly acknowledged at a staff appreciation night last weekend.

Best of luck to the Killarney Celtic U-12 girls team who are heading to Dublin next weekend to take part in the National Cup finals. Although competition will be fierce, the talented young footballers have prepared well and will have their sights firmly set on winning some silverware at the prestigious tournament.

The girls have scored 123 goals this season (conceding just once in the process) so confidence is high and manager Alan O’Sullivan and coach Paul Vermiglio certainly have them well drilled.

Celtic’s girls have only reached this stage of the National Cup twice in 12 years, which goes to show what a great achievement it is to qualify.

The club have expressed their gratitude to John Bowler of Supermacs who has sponsored the team. Bringing a squad of girls to Dublin overnight is obviously quite costly so Celtic are seeking additional funding from the general public. College Open Days are an ideal way for prospective students and parents to visit the campus, attend information talks and meet with college staff and students of the various courses. Many of the Open Days are scheduled from October to December so it is important not to miss out on colleges of specific interest.

Research and planning are key to getting the maximum benefit from your visit to college Open Days.

Your time is precious as an exam student therefore you need to ensure that the visit is an efficient and effective use of your time. Look up the dates on the college websites or for a complete list log on to HYPERLINK “http://www.qualifax.ie” www.qualifax.ie .

Then go to the college websites for specific details of the day.

To get the best out of open days you need to plan ahead:

Look up the college website and download the timetable for the day. Mark the talks you want to attend. Ensure you allow plenty of time to get to a couple of talks if you are interested in different courses.

Print off a map of the college campus.

Look into the courses you are interested in so if you have questions you can ask a student or member of

staff on that course.

Keep an open mind when looking at courses that you haven’t considered before. You may come across one that really interests you.

Get there early - open days tend to be very busy!

Many colleges now hold their Open Days on a Friday and a Saturday so you may not have to miss a day at school to attend. Either way, with careful planning and preparation Open Days can be a very worthwhile part of your career decision-making process.

Consultants Say Air Ambulance Adultery No Longer Should Have Doctor On Board A Crime In India

A group of international consultants has appealed for the medical team on board Ireland’s first community-run air ambulance to be made up of a doctor and a paramedic. The group, which contains consultants in emergency medicine, anaesthesia, pre-hospital and retrieval medicine, has written an open letter to the Government.

Their call is being resisted by the HSE and the National Ambulance Service, which plans to staff the air ambulance with an advanced paramedic and an emergency medical technician. The ambulance, which is funded by charity, arrived in Kerry on Friday.

Five advanced paramedics and five emergency medical technicians will begin a month’s specialist training today. They will make up

the medical crew in teams of two. However, the consultants group said that an advanced paramedic/EMT team does not meet international standards.

They say it will not be able to provide advanced pre-hospital medical and trauma care to many critically ill and injured patients.

The consultants, many of whom are Irish, are based in the UK, the US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Europe.

They say a doctor/paramedic team will improve clinical outcomes and save more lives.

Dr Brian Burns, an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Sydney University, said it would be a shame for the service to start without meeting international standards.

Trump Corner Trump Says China Respects His “Very, Very Large Brain” President Donald Trump told reporters on Wednesday that China supposedly respects him for his “very, very large brain,” during a news conference where he addressed wide-ranging issues including trade, North Korea and mounting allegations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Trump also doubled down on his earlier accusations that Beijing was looking to meddle in the US congressional elections later this year, but did not offer any specific details. He said China would like to see Trump lose an election because “they’ve never been challenged like this.”

Trump earlier told a UN Security Council meeting on non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction that China was trying to interfere in the upcoming mid-term elections, without providing any evidence. China immediately rejected the accusation during the same meeting, according to reports.

When pressed for details during the news conference, Trump called attention to the escalating trade tension between the two countries.

“China now put on $250 billion, and they’re paying 25 per cent on that.

They’re paying billions and billions — this has never happened to China, and I like China and I like President Xi a lot.”

India’s top court has ruled adultery is no longer a crime, striking down a 158-year-old colonial-era law which it said treated women as male property. Previously any man who had sex with a married woman, without the permission of her husband, had committed a crime.

A petitioner had challenged the law saying it was arbitrary and discriminated against men and women. It is not clear how many men have been prosecuted under the law - there is no data available.

This is the second colonial-era law struck down by India’s Supreme Court this month - it also overturned a 157-year-old law which effectively criminalised gay sex in India.

While reading out the judgement on adultery, Chief Justice Dipak Misra said that while it could be grounds for civil issues like divorce, “it cannot be a criminal offence”.

Wexford Man Runs Onto Runway To Flag Down Plane

A passenger has been pinned to the ground by police at Dublin Airport after running out of the terminal towards a plane and shouting at the pilot to wait.

Patrick Kehoe, 23, made it to the taxiing Ryanair aircraft before gardaí arrested him at about 7am. He has been charged with criminal damage to a door lock and granted bail.

A ground crew member said he “just ran from the building towards the plane”, which was departing for Amsterdam.

The Irish man was “quite determined” to make his flight, an eyewitness told Irish broadcaster RTÉ, adding that he ran towards the

plane “with his suitcase under his arm”.

Patrick Kehoe shouted abuse at waiting journalists as he appeared in court Mr Kehoe, of Raheenaskeagh, Gorey in County Wexford, was brought before Dublin’s district court later on Thursday morning.

There were no objections to bail, and Mr Kehoe was released on his own bond of €200. He is to appear again on November 8.

Mr Kehoe covered his face with a folder and shouted abuse at waiting journalists as he left the court, before swinging his suitcase at the crowd and lowering his trousers to expose his backside.

#MeToo Accuser Kerry Babies: Sued By TV Star Gardaí Go Door-To-Door In Valentia She Accused

Just a few months ago, China was hit by a string of #MeToo accusations that emerged from arenas as diverse as temples, universities and television talk shows. Now, one case is set to go before China’s civil courts but it is the accuser, not the accused, who is having to defend herself.

In July, China’s entertainment world was faced with the allegation that one of the country’s biggest and most beloved TV stars had forcibly groped and kissed an intern after she took a basket of fruit to his room.

Zhu Jun, known for hosting national television extravaganzas such as the Spring Festival Gala, immediately denied the accusation and proceeded to sue her for damaging his reputation and mental wellbeing.

The woman, known by her online moniker Xianzi, was finally told on Tuesday that the case

will be heard in Beijing’s Haidian district court.

She has now filed a countersuit and intends to fight the case, thus setting up China’s first #MeToo confrontation in court.

The case is a telling insight into how China is negotiating the #MeToo phenomenon that has swept the world and seen dozens of high-profile figures being publicly shamed for alleged sexual misconduct.

When 25-year-old Xianzi posted her 3,000-word account on WeChat, she wasn’t expecting a huge amount of attention.

But when her friend Xu Chao re-posted it on China’s biggest social media site Sina Weibo - it immediately began to go viral.

Xu Chao is now also being sued

by Zhu Jun - who also demands compensation and a public apology from her, arguing that the situation has caused him great distress.

Autistic Kid Dresses As T-Rex For Family Portraits Snapping a family portrait can be an unpleasant experience for anyone but for children with autism, the stress can be overwhelming. That’s the case for eight-year-old Levi, who lives in Georgia with his mom Samantha Bishop, 26.

For years, it’s taken as long as two hours to get a family picture, but last week it took the pair only 20 minutes to take the perfect photo. How did they do it? By dressing up as dinosaur T-Rex. The images have warmed many hearts on internet forum Red-

dit where it was upvoted more than 123,000 times.

“This is the best thing ever! Our daughter is on the spectrum and always wears either a unicorn horn or Eevee ears everywhere we go. It’s so awesome creating a life and space for our kids to stretch into themselves and not worry about petty rules like picture etiquette or that costumes are only for Halloween,” wrote one contributor.

“This is what family photos should be about. Everyone’s happy at the end, and makes for great stories later,” commented another.

Gardaí investigating the Kerry Babies case began house-to-house enquiries on Valentia Island on Monday morning.

These are the first door-to-door inquiries in 34 years and are taking place as part of a cold case investigation into the murder of the days-old Kerry baby, also known as Baby John, found stabbed on a strand near Cahersiveen.

Gardaí involved in the renewed investigation will hand out questionnaires to up to 400 houses on the island nearest to White Strand beach where the baby’s body was discovered on April 14, 1984. The person responsible for the killing has never been found.

The investigation into his murder originally led to what became known as the Kerry Babies case, after a young Abbeydorney woman, Joanne Hayes, was wrongly accused by gardaí of giving birth to two boys by different fathers, and of murdering Baby John. That charge and related ones were later dropped, and a tribunal of inquiry launched into the case.

The Garda inquiry into the death of Baby John re-opened in January this year, accompanied by an apology by gardaí to Ms Hayes.

Gardaí in January said they believed the answers to the baby’s death lie in the Iveragh Peninsula in Co Kerry.

Maurice Fitz To Get The Nod?

Two-time All-Ireland medal winner Maurice Fitzgerald appears to be the preferred choice to succeed Eamonn Fitzmaurice as the manager of the Kerry senior football team, with former Mayo team coach and selector Donie Buckley lined up to be part of the new management team.

With just 10 days to go to the deadline to put management ticket before club delegates for ratification, it’s believed the job is Fitzgerald’s to refuse, and that the St Mary’s club man is seriously considering making the step up from selector to manager.

It’s also speculated that Fitzgerald’s former Kerry team mate Stephen Stack, who

managed Austin Stacks to the Munster Club title in 2014, is being lined up to come on board as well, although it’s not clear if direct contact has been made with the Listowel native, who, it’s understood, is willing to get involved with the Kerry team. Fitzgerald was a selector for the last two years under Fitzmaurice and it seems there is a desire on the part of the selection committee to maintain a link between the previous management team and the new one.

Rumours of Fitzgerald’s proposed appointment have not been met with widespread delight amongst supporters, many of whom favoured popular minor boss Peter Keane for the role.

Schools Asked To Embrace Mental Health Initiative Primary and Secondary schools across Kerry are being urged this autumn to embrace the Amber Flag initiative for Pieta House, a nationwide suicide prevention charity. The Amber Flag initiative is a program that encourages schools, along with colleges, sports clubs and societies to work to bring about and promote a cultural shift in the way we think about mental health. It will empower and encourage pupils to be caring and considerate for one another.

In order to be awarded the Pieta House Amber Flag, schools and other applicant groups must host a mental health awareness event, a fundraiser, and a mental health initiative. The programme encourages teamwork and student contributions and works with school guidance counsellors to include a peer-support element. The Amber Flag is in its 5th year and over 450 flags have been awarded to date. Once a school is awarded the flag it is placed in a prominent position outside the school flying at full mast acknowledging the great achievement.

CEO of Pieta House, Brian Higgins clarified that: “Our vision at Pieta House is a world where suicide, self-harm, and stigma have been replaced by hope, self-care, and acceptance. Challenging stigma is critical to us as an organisation.”

Mr Higgins added that: “Stigma is frequently what brings people to the doors of Pieta House, often adding to stresses on youth mental health. If we

support schools and groups to create a stronger and more resilient environment, then we can build stronger and more resilient people.”

The Pieta House Amber Flag initiative will enable them to support schools and youth groups across Kerry in raising awareness of the stigmas which exist in their environments, and the stressors on the mental and emotional wellbeing of those within them.

A Wonderful Show Before Winter Words: Debby Looney

Garden Magic Chilly autumn days are among the most memorable in the year. Crisp air, high blue skies and a sun which still warms the face. I love these calm days, not least because I get to enjoy the displays the trees put on for us!

Some of the colours in the garden are truly spectacular at this time of year; there are reds quite unlike any others. The red oak is one of the most majestic, but unfortunately is very slow to grow. Amelanchier x grandiflora, ‘Autumn Brilliance’, is a small tree worthy of space in your garden. It has an unrivalled red foliage in the fall, and is covered in white blossoms in the spring. It tolerates any soil and is very hardy in windy sites. Liquidamber, or sweet gum, is also a beautiful small tree. It has glossy maple shaped leaves, which are a bright green until they turn golden and then scarlet. It is not very tolerant of wind, in my garden it has grown to be a stubby little multi-branched shrub, rather than a proud upright tree. However, it still puts on a show, and I will leave it in peace!

A favourite of mine is always the Euonymus alatus, oddly referred to as the burning bush… It is also known as the spindle tree as it’s timber is very hard and was used to make spindles. It is a bushy plant, flowers so as you wouldn’t notice in the spring, but then come autumn it is covered in pink and orange berries. These are followed by the brightest red fo-

liage of any plant. It is a shrub which should by in every hedgerow, and garden if possible. Fothergilla is another favourite in my garden. It has fluffy white flowers in the spring before the leaves appear, followed by (dull) unassuming green foliage in the summer, which becomes a head-turning deep red at this time of year.

Foliage is not the only colour at the moment. Japanese anenomes are pride of place in the garden now, with their crisp white and gentle pink blooms. Easy to grow, they can sometimes take over in a small border. But sometimes that might be a good thing!

They are the kind of plant that are very very happy when they are happy, but look intolerably sad if they are not. They prefer a moist, rich, well-drained soil,

in partial shade. They are excellent for butterflies, but even more importantly, neither rabbits nor deer seem to like them.

Berries are also plentiful at the moment. Pyracantha, which can be used as a climber, shrub or hedging, is available with red, orange or yellow berries. It is an early flowerer which makes it a great food source for many insects early in the year. Viburnum opulus is a common hedgerow plant, and if you are wondering what the bright juicy looking red berries are along the road, it is likely the Viburnum opulus. Also worthy of a spot at the back of a border in a large garden!

We are lucky to be treated to such a wonderful show before winter, and I only hope there are few storms, which unfortunately tend to cut the final act short!

elcome to September Home and Living, the heating is on and the nights are getting shorter, I do love summer, when we get one but I am defiantly a winter person, I love fires and cozy throws lots of velvet cushions and a good book. But it is lovely to get some sunny autumn and winter days to get out for a walk, sometimes when we live surrounded by all this beautiful scenery we take it a bit for granted, we walked to Lord Brandons last Sunday and it was so beautiful.

This month in home and living we are looking at how to get your home winter ready a little bit of Danish Hygge a lot of coziness.

If your thinking of going the whole hog and redecorating October is often your last chance to order large items like sofas for christmas so if santa is bringing a new sofa its time to write that letter! We have also looked at stoves and fires, having added a gas fire to our extension last winter it was like adding a room, as we now use this room all year round as apposed to just summer. Our house this month is a quick update to a summer home, sometimes something simple like changing where the television is in a room can change how you live in it completely.

The season has changed. The temperature has dropped. At this time of the year we feel the desire to spend more time indoors than out. It is the perfect time to bring some new life to an existing interior design scheme.

This project illustrates how easily this can be done. The deep earthy colour palette is combined with dark wood ebony paneling. Winter Pots During the cold months of January and February, when the setting is bleak and the sky is grey, winter containers can cheer up the soul and add a colourful punch to the landscape. Many gardeners give up on their potted creations in the fall, but that can be a horrible waste because winter is when colour and interest are most vital. What pots to use? Fiberglass, lead, iron, heavy plastic, and stone are the best weather-resistant containers to use. What plants work best? These mainly flower in spring, but cyclamen, winter-flowering pansy, viola, primula and polyanthus will flower intermittently during mild spells in winter. Box plants add all year greenery.

Interior of the Month

The owners of our house this month wanted a quick update to their summer home, on a budget, the bones of the house were good so major renovations were not necessary, the trick when on a budget is not to throw out the baby with the bathwater some of the furniture was in reasonable condition and could be replaced at a later date when budget allowed and didn’t need replacing, just a few small changes where all that was needed to make this a comfortable and cozy home. The sitting room didn’t work as the television was on the wrong side of the room and to create a seating layout that could accommodate a corner sofa, so the television points were changed to the other side of the room which changed the layout completely. The kitchen and living room were painted a grey to give the area a homely feel and a seating area was created in the hallway with some coat hooks to keep the entrance neat and tidy. Some reasonable prints were added to add some character. In the master bedroom, wall lights great for reading and some small side tables in a calming green both from Ikea. A small patio area was added outside to take advantage of the south facing garden. The owners are still adding to their home, but were thrilled with the new layout and Patio and all completed on a budget.

6 WAYS TO COZY UP YOUR HOME

It’s beginning to feel a lot like winter, whether you love or hate the winter months getting your house winter ready will get you through. The Danes have it right with Hygge which all started with trying to survive through cold and dark, winter months Hygge was a way to acknowledge moments of happiness or self-contentment to break up the cold dark days. So get your home Hygge ready. #1: Blankets, blankets, blankets: Throw blankets are my favorite accessory to have in the autumn and winter. We love to cuddle up with them when we watch movies so I literally have baskets of them in every room. I also like to pull out the thicker and more cuddly ones, like faux fur and wool ones. Drape them over the couch, fanning them out to look more cozy. If you have seating or a bech in your entry area add a throw, it’s a great way to add softness to an area. #2: Pairing light with dark: When you decorate for spring and summer, your colors are more bright and airy. Autumn is a great time to start bringing in darker, moodier colors and pairing them up with your light ones. The easiest way to do this is with cushion. I always keep neutral pillows on the couch to kind of ‘ground’ the decor and then mix up the ones in between. You can also add dark colors with blankets and various decor items You might be surprised what a little black or dark gray can do to your decor. #3: Lighting and candles: In the evening, what’s more cozy than a fire warming your toes? If you don’t want a full fire, lighting some candles is a great way to get the ambiance and warmth. Also adding some lamps instead of using your main light it adds coziness in the flick of a switch. Another good tip replace your main light switch with a dimmer switch so you can adjust your lighting for a better ambiance. And don’t forget the LED battery operated candles which actually work on a timer. All you need is to turn it on ‘timer’ at a certain time of day and

then it will come on every day at that time. You get the candle glow without the fire hazard. #4: Metals: Metals seem a little non-cozy but they can actually be surprisingly warm. If you have some old candle sticks ceramic vases or bowls, it’s super easy to buy some metallic spray paint and give a modern look by spraying it. Consider other metals like bronze and copper as well. These metals add depth and texture to your space. #5: Texture: Fall and winter is the time for thick textures and naps. Trade out your cotton throws for fur or thick course linens. Add a sheepskin to your chair if you don’t like the idea of an animal skin there are some great Faux ones and they instantly add texture and warmth to a space. You can add more texture to your vase fillers as well…replace a bowl full of lemons or apples with a bowl full of acorns, or pinecones. I love using pinecones with a scented oil added. #6: Scents: If you hate the idea of adding any decor, then at least consider adding a scent. Light a scented candle with a name like “apple cider” or “winter spice” and you will instantly feel that holiday feeling.

Retro/electro Peugeot e-LEGEND

Peugeot will shortly unveil to the public its ‘vision of the future’ in the form of the e-LEGEND concept, an autonomous EV that embraces heritage design cues dating back half a century.

Last week Peugeot teased us with an outline of the battery-electric concept. And, according to the manufacturer, it’s equipped with all the technology required to run autonomously in two self-driving modes, but the e-LEGEND can also be driven in two manual modes.

Autonomous soft mode is a comfort-oriented setting, with minimal stimulation from the car’s digital screens and other information displays.

An autonomous sharp mode operates like a hightech business centre on the move, providing full connectivity for social media engagement and online corporate activities.

Porsche Pulls The Plug On Diesel V

Porsche has officially pulled the plug on diesel so that it can concentrate efforts and resources on petrol, hybrid and electric cars. The German carmaker confirmed the news this week, ending months of speculation around its oil-burning future.

Citing a significant increase in demand for electric cars, Porsche chief executive Oliver Blume said in an official statement the sports marque was going all-

in with e-mobility, investing €6 billion in the technology in a move projected to take effect by 2022. It will also continue investing in petrol internal combustion.

Diesel only comprised of 12% of Porsche global sales last year, and demand is said to be free-falling. Porsche has been swept up in Volkswagen’s ongoing diesel emissions scandal, which appears the obvious trigger here.

They can be made to match the shape of the nail, and to extend it. So, when you want longer nails, you are asking for PolyGel extensions, which are finished with a coloured polish of choice.

PolyGel nails need to be refilled every 3-4 weeks.

Shellac is a blend of gel and nail polish. Because it is like a polish, it can’t be used to extend your nail. Because it is like

a gel, however, it does add strength and durability.

The main benefit is that it reduces chipping, also they are completely dry before leaving the studio.

Gelish is similar to shellac but lasts up to three weeks. It’s durable and adds strength; we carry a wide range of colours to suit everyone. Gelish dip is an acrylic dip system from the creators Gelish. It can probably be best described as something between gel and acrylic – not as soft and flexible as gel but not quite so hard as traditional acrylic. It lasts up to 3-4 weeks. It’s stronger than Gelish and Shellac but not an extension. You now have some tools to better understand your options. And of course, to make the final decision and find the manicure that best suits you and your nails, don’t forget to consult your nail technician!

Donal was our chairman for many years and did trojan work for the area. Donal was a perfectionist not only at home and a great family man but also the countless work he did as chairman was second to none.

If Donal wasn’t cleaning at home he was out cleaning footpaths, tending to the flower pots in the green area of Woodlawn Park, arranging meetings of the committee or with the town council and others.

Donal is of course sadly missed by his family, friends and we the committee will sorely miss him. RIP. From Woodlawn Park Residents Association Committee.

Kerry SFC 1/4 Final | Killarney Legion v Dr Crokes | Sunday at 2pm | Fitzgerald Stadium

Is there a fiercer rivalry in football? Just 365 metres separate the Legion and the Crokes and in a town like Killarney where people are utterly consumed by Ireland’s national game, familiarity is sure to breed contempt. There is an animosity between the two that borders on hatred in certain quarters and on Sunday they’ll meet on neutral ground with a place in the county semi-final at stake. Things will get heated. You can be sure of that.

Since the turn of the 21st century, the Crokes have been the undisputed kings of Kerry football. Their haul in that period includes 11 East Kerry championships, seven county championships, five Munster championships and, the crowning glory, a much-coveted All-Ireland in 2017. It has been an unprecedented period of success for the Lewis Road club and everyone else in the county has been living in their shadow for the better part of two decades.

That doesn’t sit well with anyone but it’s bound to be particularly frustrating for their nearest neighbours who, despite going close on numerous occasions, have failed to secure a major trophy at senior level since 1993.

Impressive wins in the opening two rounds of this

year’s championship have brought an air of cautious optimism to Derreen but, despite their recent hiccup against Rahilly’s, Crokes are the reigning champions for a reason. It’s a tough draw. I suppose the question on everyone’s lips is, “can this Legion team actually beat this Crokes team?”

I must admit that it’s tricky for me to write about Legion v Crokes when I’ve been Legion all my life and I’m a member of the current squad. I’m injured at the moment so I won’t be togging out on Sunday (much to Pat O’Shea’s relief I’m sure!). I faced a similar Catch 22 when I was playing for Athletic.

Say something positive about my own team and I’m biased, say something positive about the opposition and I’m a turncoat. The bottom line is that you can’t please all of the people all of the time, so I’ve found the best bet is to just be as honest as possible.

In short, I definitely think this Legion team are capable of causing an upset. I always knew this crop of players were talented but since returning to the fold in June, I’ve seen up close how committed and hard-working they are; that’s not really something you can appreciate or understand unless you’re actually involved in the set-up. I couldn’t fault the lads’ attitude for one second and I have no doubts

whatsoever about their ability either.

On the other side of the coin, this is the Crokes we’re talking about. They’re heavy favourites for this match and justifiably so given their track record over the past number of years. With dangerous forwards like Tony Brosnan, Kieran O’Leary and David Shaw floating around place, they’re always liable to score goals and it will take a massive performance from Legion, from 1-21, to dethrone them this weekend.

It is genuinely a tough one to call. Whatever the outcome, it should make for interesting viewing.

Verdict: A good game of football with plenty of flaking.

Can Anyone Contain East Kerry’s Forwards?

East Kerry are blessed with young, intercounty calibre forwards and they have been rampant in the opening two games of this year’s County Championship.

Jack Sherwood, Paudie Clifford, Dara Moynihan, Kevin McCarthy, David Clifford and Evan Cronin, as well as the returning Darragh Roche, all shone as the East racked up 10-36 in strikingly one-sided victories over St Brendan’s and Dingle in Rounds 1 and 2. It’s the type of form that has seen them earmarked as one of the tournament favourites and it also begs the question: can anyone in the county contain them?

They will undoubtedly come up against their

toughest opposition to date when they play South Kerry on Sunday. The perennial championship contenders recovered well from their Round 2A defeat to Austin Stacks by making light work of Rathmore a fortnight ago, and they are particularly strong in defence. Full back Mark Griffin is in Australia but Killian Young could return, while dynamic half backs Rob Wharton and Graham O’Sullivan can have an impact at both ends of the field.

O’Sullivan scored four points against Rathmore and the midfield combination of Bryan Sheehan and Denis Daly accounted for a further 1-5. That’s 1-9 out of their 1-15 total from numbers 6, 8 and 9.

East Kerry will need to be strong in these areas but, worryingly, influential midfielder Kieran Murphy is reportedly struggling with an injury.

The Kilcummin man has been in superb form this season, so much so that some pundits are tipping him to start for the Kerry seniors next year.

His absence would be sorely felt and could force manager Jerry O’Sullivan to shift Sherwood to midfield.

South Kerry are never easy to shake but if East Kerry can hold their own around the middle third, they should have enough firepower to advance to the last four.

Verdict: East Kerry by three.

Kerins Rahilly’s and St Brendan’s meet under lights tomorrow evening in Tralee and with deadly finishers in both camps, it promises to be a straight shootout for the win. Churchill marksman Ivan Parker has been in devastating form in this year’s championship and Ross O’Callaghan will have to be at the very top of his game to keep him quiet.

Barry John Keane impressed for Rahilly’s in their memorable comeback victory for Crokes and, when he’s on his game, his shoot-on-sight mentality tends to pay dividends. Man-mountain Tommy Walsh was back to his menacing best against the defending champions and if the club side can keep Keane, Walsh and the accurate Jack Savage firing on all cylinders, they should rack up a big enough score to progress.

Verdict: Rahilly’s by four.

Following a near-perfect league campaign (20 points from 22 in Division 2) and a perfect start to the Kerry SFC, Austin Stacks are unquestionably the form team in this year’s championship. They showed how potent they can be in attack by banging in four goals in a superb victory over South Kerry in the previous round and they are favourites to beat Dingle tomorrow and book their place in the last four.

Kieran Donaghy is attending his brother’s wedding in Spain today (Friday) but he will be flying home on Saturday morning and the Kerry legend is expected to start.

Dingle tend to rely heavily on talismanic forward Paul Geaney and he will need to be at the top of his game if the men from the west are to advance.

Verdict: Stacks by one.

The Scotts Lakers came into this one on the back of a trip to Waterford the night before and, to be frank, they had all the signs of it. UL, who also played the previous evening, didn’t look as though they were up to much early on but the hosts also struggled to move through the gears in an error-ridden opening quarter.

Some sloppy passing and errant shooting were making for a poor enough spectacle but the Lakers began to find their feet in the second period.

Papito Hersisia, Seán O’Brien, Dailian Mason and Mark Greene all scored as the hosts opened up a 10-point lead and finally gave the near capacity crowd something to shout about. The Eagles responded well and cut the deficit to a single point with a minute to go but Greene completed a threepoint play to ensure the Lakers went in ahead. They led by six, 37-31, at the half.

UL’s American guard Tarchee Brown was the standout player in the third as he almost single-handedly kept the visitors in contention with a string of consecutive baskets.

The Lakers appeared to be fatiguing by this stage and the game was in danger of getting away from them in the closing minutes, but five straight points from Shane McCarthy kept them within touching distance. Mark Greene came up big with another three, his third of the day, to give his side a 73-71 lead with just under three minutes to play, but the Eagles equalised with 73 seconds left on the clock.

Cormac O’Donoghue called a timeout with 40 seconds to go and I’m sure the gist of his team talk was relatively straightforward: give it to Seán O’Brien and get out of his way.

O’Brien had scored 26 points in another solid performance, which was tainted only slightly by an unusual spell during which he missed four free throws in a row.

The Lakers entrusted reliable passer Mark Greene with the inbounds from the left sideline and O’Brien got some separation from Tarchee Brown thanks to a screen from Hersisia. The Pennsylvania native gathered possession before dribbling towards the right-hand-side of the court, with Brown fighting under another Hersisia screen to block off his route to the basket.

Surprisingly, the Lakers guard was left 1v1 with Brown (UL’s centre had the perfect opportunity to double up but he stayed with Hersisia at the top of the key) and it was American versus American with the game on the line.

a head fake and drove down the lane at breakneck speed. A teammate slid across the baseline to help Brown but O’Brien absorbed the contact while simultaneously flipping up a right-handed lay-up that dropped in via the back of the rim.

The referees rightly whistled for a blocking foul and the home fans let out one of the biggest roars ever heard at the Auracle. O’Brien, who had his troubles from the line earlier in the game, composed himself and completed the three-point play to make it 7673 with time running out. The Eagles failed to convert at the other end and Shane McCarthy made

sure of the win with a free throw at the death.

It was an exciting end to a slog of a game and if O’Brien hadn’t already endeared himself to the home crowd with his 37-point debut, he certainly has now.

This was a match that the Scotts Lakers were always in control of, racing into a 31-21 lead at the end of the first quarter. Despite the best efforts of free-scoring American Daniel Noe, the home team struggled to close the gap and the Killarney side led 54-42 at half-time. The Lakers maintained their advantage in the second half with coach Cormac O’Donoghue running his full bench and they led 76-55 as the game entered the final quarter. The final period was a mere formality for the Lakers, who scored 13 three-pointers on the night and had a comfortable 29 points to spare in the end.

“I Pulled Like An Executioner Would Swing An Axe” Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald God be good to the late, great Pat Delaney who did so much to keep hurling alive in East Kerry, but who never lost contact with his native Kilkenny. On one of his visits back home he went to see Kilkenny train for the All-Ireland hurling final. The A v B game was pure savagery and is recorded by Tyrrell in his book. Brian Cody was the referee. He blew the whistle to start the game and blew it just once more to end the game. Tyrrell was marking Colin Fennelly.

“I knew I could rough him up,” Tyrell writes. “I pulled like an executioner would swing an axe. Colin put out his hands as to why there was no free. Cody said, ‘Brian, get used to it’. If I pulled that stroke in a match I’d have been suspended for 6 months,” Tyrrell admits.

There was also a big milling at the other end of the field. Tommy Walsh went for John Mulhall and nearly killed him. Nobody batted an eyelid. It was just another standard Kilkenny training match.

Jackie Tyrrell, who played for 14 years and won nine All-Ireland SHC medals, says in his autobiography that he was driven like a warrior to prepare for the Kilkenny games. He gives the readers an insight into his own playing career and the mindset of Kilkenny boss Brian Cody. He experienced the highs and the lows.

Cody picked him for the 2003 final but dropped him to the subs for the 2015 final. In the game, his job was to, “Mind the house. Nothing else mattered. Ruthless.

That was my identity.” He does admit that the Kilkenny players were very skillful but they could also mix it when necessary to win games.

The book tries to get inside the mindset of Brian Cody

but admits that that is not possible. Cody is his own man. He taught the author in 4th, 5th and 6th classes in national school and both of them are members of the Village hurling club in Kilkenny. That did not earn him any shred of favoritism. “No player’s position was safe with Cody.

You had to prove yourself.”

The men showed up on match day and that is why they won so many All-Irelands. They were fully focused on winning. He said that was the difference between Tipperary and themselves.

Tipp were still thinking and talking about the 2010 All-Ireland well in to the 2011 season.

“Three days after the 2011 final I was already thinking about 2012.”

He goes on to describe the feeling of winning an All-Ireland. “It was euphoric, like the ultimate high from a narcotic. Motivation or hunger was never an issue for us. We kept coming back, it consumed us and we were addicted to it.” He recalls beating Tipperary, who relied on getting the ball into Lar Corbett, in the 2012 semi-final.

Kilkenny had the answer: Tommy Walsh played a blinder.

What surprised me was the revelation that Cody made so many changes for All-Ireland finals. Brian Horgan, TJ Reid, David Henry, Martin Comerford and the author were all dropped for finals.

In his 16 finals including replays Brian Cody named an unchanged team from the semi-final and replays on just five occasions.

Brother Damien (Brennan) was a great confi-

dante for the author and he went to him regularly when things were not going so well. The thought of retiring after 14 years with the county team was trashed out with Cody and Brother Damien. Was it worth all the preparations to seek that 10th medal? In the end, he said he was, “leaving the Kilkenny jersey in a better state than he found it. That makes me smile.”

Tyrrell’s story and a return of nine All-Ireland medals is well worth telling and gives readers an understanding of the winning formula that brought the McCarthy Cup to Noreside with such great regularity, while also offering some insight into the mindset of Brian Cody.

Celts To Host New-Look Blues In FAI Junior Cup The first Killarney Derby of the season will take place at 2pm this Sunday when double winners Killarney Celtic host bitter rivals Killarney Athletic in Celtic Park.

You may have noticed that this is the exact same time as the other Killarney Derby, Dr Crokes v Legion, which will be played across the bypass in the Fitzgerald Stadium. Why the Kerry District League would choose to schedule such an important fixture to clash with, interest-wise, the biggest game in Killarney’s sporting calendar is beyond me.

Sometimes it seems that the GAA and soccer officials do things like this out of spite, just to make supporters choose between the two. This past summer the GAA decided to fix Kerry v Galway for the same time as the World Cup final, which backfired badly, and now the KDL have done the same thing (albeit on a much smaller scale). It’s a joke, really.

Now there will unquestionably be fewer people at the Celtic-Athletic game than there would have been if it was played earlier, or on Saturday, or on Friday.

First and foremost, it’s unfair on the players. Every-

one wants to play in front of big crowds and it’s actually demoralising when you walk out onto the pitch and there aren’t as many supporters as you expected.

It’s unfair on supporters, too, who will either miss one of the biggest football games of the year, or one of the biggest soccer games of the year. There is a huge overlap between the soccer and football communities in Killarney - I would say that 90% of the people who play or follow soccer in this town have an interest in football too – so making all of those people choose between the two is wrong.

It’s also a blow financially to Celtic, who could have made a nice bit of money from the gate.

I’ve no doubt that some hardcore soccer heads are reading this and saying, “if supporters are going to choose football over soccer then they’re not real supporters.” But realistically, unless they have a vested interest in the club or the team, the majority of casual fans will choose Legion v Crokes in the quarter-final of the championship over Athletic v Celtic in the second round of the FAI. And many of the people who go to the soccer might well have gone to the foot-

ball as well if that was an option. The two events are bound to take away from each other.

Back to the game itself and Celtic, you would imagine, will fancy their chances of winning a third derby on the bounce. They hit Listowel for seven last weekend and they don’t often drop points at home.

Danny Roche is banging in goals at the minute so Athletic’s defence will have to be on their toes for the duration and, although they have lost a couple of players, the core of their team remains the same.

I suppose The Blues are currently going through a bit of a transition period with many older heads like myself stepping away from the fold, but I liked the look of the team that beat Fenit in their last match. Darren Mulcahy and Aydan Mulvaney are two young midfielders with lots of ability and attackers Will Courtney and Seán Cournane are always liable to score a goal or two.

The two sides have met eight times in the past two seasons and there has never been more than a single goal between them, so there could be another tight encounter in store.

Van Graan Gets A Bad Case Of The Blues

Words: Liam Murphy Last weekend, Munster came a cropper against Welsh outfit Cardiff Blues at the Arms Park in Wales. It was pretty much a disaster of a match for Johan van Graan’s men as very little went right for them on the night. Cardiff inflicted a heavy defeat on Munster in a 37–13 rout and secured the bonus point to boot. CJ Stander returned for the trip but made little difference. The Blues had lost their previous three matches and Munster would have fancied their chances on the back of a very good win against the Ospreys the weekend before in Cork. Nick Williams again proved the difference and is such a thorn in Munster’s side, regardless of which team he plays with.

Next Saturday, Munster host Ulster Rugby at Thomond Park ahead of a trip to the Aviva Stadium to take on double champions Leinster. They will dearly want to improve on the poor 50% loss rate so far this season.

Leinster will be the toughest challenge so far, ahead of a trip to Exeter Chiefs in the opening round of the renamed Heineken Cup. There are a lot of big games coming up and an improvement is badly needed.

Closer to home, the Munster Junior Leagues kicked off last weekend.

Killarney RFC hosted Tralee RFC in the Division 3 opener in front of a bumper crowd at Aghadoe last Sunday. A fantastic game saw the visitors win by three points but this was a match fitting of an opening weekend and it was great to have rugby back up and running at Aghadoe. The lads are away to Dunmanway next weekend (October 7). You just can’t beat the atmosphere and rugby at a local derby and with Killorglin and Rugbaí Corcha Dhuibhne also in the same division, there will e a few more derbies to enjoy.

Kris Meeke on Toyota’s radar for 2019

This story has not gone away this week and further reports suggest that Toyota team principal Tommi Makinen has discussed the possibility of bringing Kris Meeke back to the World Rally Championship in a Yaris WRC for 2019.

Double champion Gronholm working on one-off WRC return

Gronholm is expected to discuss a one-off drive for next February’s Rally Sweden with fellow Finn and Toyota team principal Tommi Makinen in the coming weeks. An agreement was nearly reached for Sweden this season, and there is now interest in making sure Gronholm’s first WRC appearance since 2010 happens next year.

Citroen are fully investigating the cause of the fire that destroyed Craig Breen’s C3 World Rally Car in Turkey. Craig was leading the rally in the early stages.

A big thank you to Kerry Coastal Rowing for highlighting the rowing traditions of South Kerry on Sunday last.

SENIORS V TRALEE: Last Sunday, Aghadoe was the venue for the first match of this years new season as Killarney welcomed Tralee RFC in the first match of Division 3. A bumper crowd was on hand to witness proceedings as our Girls U12’s played a demo match just before the main event and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We also had two mascots - Lachlan Scannell and Naoise O’Connor who led the lads out and posed for photos with the Killarney and Tralee captains Peter Kelly and Micheal Maher. A cracker of a match saw the visitors the victors on

Sport 33 Clubs In Killarney Advertiser This Week a 12-5 scoreline with scrumhalf Paul O’Sullivan and Ian Roche crossing the line and Oisin O’Shea converting once. The last five minutes saw Peter Kelly’s men camped on the Tralee line but unfortunately couldn’t convert to a score for the win. All in all a tough defeat for the lads but the scrum was very strong and they will look forward to the trip to Dunmanway next weekend for the next match. Man of the match James Allman was sublime.

It was fantastic to see the small army of ball boys/girls on the sidelines and a huge thanks has to go to everyone who helped out on the day!

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

Our annual competition took place on Lough Lein last Sunday . With blustery conditions off shore , anglers had to be crafty in picking out a good drift . At the weigh in shed the different strategies of the day came home to roost and the top five rods on the day were as follows : 1)Liam Buckley, 2)DJ O Riordan, 3)John O Callaghan, 4)Steve Cambell, 5)Tom Ankatell. Heaviest fish on the day fell to the rod of Liam Buckley. With Liam cementing his lead on the angler of the year points with this win , he is now beyond reach to be caught and will be awarded the trophy at our annual prize giving on October 13th in the International Hotel. However prior to this we have one remaining competition to follow -fishing for the Tom Bambury Memorial Trophy will take place on Sunday the 07th of October on Lough Lein as well. This event is a great memorial to the Bambury family who have a long association of angling in Killarney and who still remain active supporters of St. Francis School in Beaufort . To this end , all the entry fees collected for the competition will go directly to the school - so it will be a lovely gesture for as many members as possible to turn out and fish for this event and knowing that by enjoying their sport they are also supporting a very worthy cause on the day . Entries will be taken by any club officer up to the morning of the event . Fishing commencing at 1030 and all boats ashore at 6pm , weigh in shortly afterwards at the shed.

Killarney Valley Athletic Club

County Cross Country Championships takes place this Sunday 30th Sept in the field beside the playground in Killarney at 11am sharp. The race program will be as follows beginning at 11am with Novice, U23 & U18 Women, Novice, U23 & U18 Men, U10 Girls, U10 Boys, U12 Girls, U12 Boys, U14 Girls, U14 Boys, U16 Girls, U16 boys. All athletes attending are asked to be there at 10.30 for warm up.

TRAINING: Outdoor Training will continue every Thursday evening at 6pm for all our members, meeting at field beside playground. Bring water and €2. Strength & Conditioning continues Monday nights at 7pm in the Sem Gym for all members age 12 upwards.

A fantastic win for our U15 makes it 2 from 2 again this weekend! Well done lads!!

U15: Listowel Celtic 1 - 2 MEK. Our u 15s did themselves and the Club proud with this victory away to Listowel Celtic in Our second league game this new season. Playing into a strong wind in the first half brought many challenges to the team and gave Listowel a big advantage with which they capitalised on when the went 1 nil up after 20 minutes. Sam Griffin sprinting off the left wing with 10 minutes gone in the second half pounced on a cross ball 30 meters out and blasted the ball into the top right corner to bring MEK back to 1 all.

The lightening bursts of speed from our striker Kevin Harant at this point was giving the Listowel defence all sorts of problems and the direct ball played over the top to him paid off when with 15 minutes remaining he left the defenders trailing and had a super finish to put a rocket of a shot into the Listowel net. We finished out the game as victors thanks to how the entire team withstood and broke down several listowel attacks in the final 10 minutes.

Workmen’s Rowing Club

TRAINING: Beginners Training continues at 10am on Saturday mornings at Reen Pier, Ross Castle. Anyone who is 12 or older is welcome to come down and meet our coaches, and sample the sport of rowing. We row Olympic Sculls, Killarney Sixes, Gig and Coastal Boats, all year round, with indoor training continuing during the winter if the weather is inclement. KERRY COASTAL ROWING CELEBRATION: Many thanks to Kerry Branch of the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation, Cromane Rowing Club, Glenbeigh GAA and indeed Mary B Teahan for the fantastic opportunity provided to Kerry Clubs to showcase the different forms of traditional rowing in our county last Sunday at Glenbeigh GAA Hall. It was a very sociable occasion where we all shared stories and history about the Gig, Killarney Sixes, Naomhog, Seine and One Design Coastal Boats.

The competition played on Sunday the 23rd Sept was sponsored by the Men’s Club, and was a V.Par competition which was played on the sun splashed Mahony’s Point Course in magnificent weather conditions, those conditions were reflected in the excellent scoring recorded, and no less than 4 players returned with the winning total of 5 up. The player who came out on top was our Club employee Patrick Fleming and 2nd place was John Hickey, and with the same score in 3rd & 4th places were Jason Arthur & Joe Scanlan. CLUB FUNDRAISER: Sunday night saw the club officially launch it’s first major fundraiser scheme in over 13 years at Randles showrooms on the Muckross Rd. The aim is to upgrade current facilities including the gymnasium and install floodlights on the pitches.

The project is based on the National Lottery both Euromillions and Euromillion Plus draws that take place each week. Commencing on February 1st.2019 for €5.75 per week each private member of the syndicate will have 504 lines entered on their behalf for a 12 month period. Each member will get a full listing of the lines played on the particular Wednesday and Friday for the duration. Tickets are now available from club members so as the catch phrase goes ‘’if you’re not in you can’t win’’.
