Operation Tarmac

Luxury Cars, Jewellery & Cash Seized In Operation Tarmac

Words: Eve Kelliher A FLEET of luxury vehicles including high-end BMW jeeps and BMW and Mercedes cars were seized in Killarney at dawn on Tuesday. Nine vehicles, with an estimated value of just under €500,000, along with cash totalling over €100,000 and valuable jewellery, were seized as gardaí swooped on 11 properties in the Ballyspillane and Park Road areas of the town. The seizures were made as part of Operation Tarmac, a garda investigation which has been ongoing since 2016. Members of the Criminal Assets Bureau, the Public Order Unit, the Armed Response Unit and other technical experts were also involved in what gardaí describe as one of the biggest-ever investigations conducted in Kerry. Some 130 officers searched the homes shortly after 6.15am in an operation targeting what gardaí have described as “bogus tradesmen”. The operation was led by Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Gardaí. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing. Gardaí have been investigating criminals based in Killarney who arrange to do househould work

for vulnerable people, work which is then either poorly done or simply not done at all. Home owners are forced to pay for the work regardless. Gardaí also found a large amount of documents which they believe relate to the proceeds of crime while a number of bank accounts have been frozen as part of the investigation. Bystanders were left gobsmacked at the sheer scale of the operation. One local described the scene early Tuesday morning as they were driving out of town. “A convoy of squad cars came against me,” they said. “It was bizarre. I couldn’t figure out what they were doing. Then the news started filtering through later in the day and I put two and two together.” “I couldn’t get over the amount of gardaí,” another witness commented. “I’ve never seen anything like it. It was obvious that something very serious was going down. You don’t expect something so dramatic to happen right on your doorstep, not in a town like Killarney. It’s definitely not a sight I’ll be forgetting any time soon.”

What is the CAB?

The Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) was established in 1996 to carry out investigations into the suspected proceeds of criminal conduct. The CAB identifies assets of persons which derive, (or are suspected to derive), directly or indirectly from criminal conduct. It then takes appropriate action to deprive or deny those persons of the assets and the proceeds of their criminal conduct. The Bureau has been involved in a number of high profile cases over the past twenty years

and up to 2011 had frozen over €70m worth of criminals’ assets. It also collected €137m of the €200m demanded in unpaid taxes, interest and penalties. CAB also made social welfare savings of around €6m and recovered over €2m in fraudulently claimed welfare. Figures released at the end of last year revealed that the CAB returned over €3.8m to the Exchequer in 2016 - including over €2.1m collected under Revenue legislation and €1.4m under Proceeds of Crime legislation.

A NEW community policing division has been welcomed in Killarney. Two officers, Garda Diane Collins and Garda Deirdre Quinn, will be spearheading the unit, liaising closely with Sergeant Dermot O’Connell, sergeantin-charge, Killarney Gardaí. “The new community policing unit has commenced this month and we are delight-

ed to let the community know that it is in place,” Sergeant O’Connell told Killarney Advertiser. “We had given the commitment to put this in place as soon as resources were available and we welcome it as a very positive asset to the community.” Garda Diane Collins is well-known as an operational garda in Killarney since

2006. She is very proactive with Killarney Asylum Seekers Initiative, the No Name Club and many other local community groups. This dedicated role will now expand her community involvement and will enhance service delivery to the whole community of Killarney, said Sergeant O’Connell. “It will further the process

Town Talk Facebook Reaction We asked what you thought & below are some of your comments: “Good idea but who would fund it?” “A super-mall?! How many empty premises are in the town already let alone the outlet centre! Hit the delete button!!” “Brilliant idea!” “Another concrete block in the centre of town? One way access already through to a to busy and constantly traffic jammed College Street/Plunkett Street? What about the houses beside the Glebe car park? Living in darkness?” “Fantastic. Looks great and will only benefit the town.” “Terrible idea of another shopping centre. Outlet Centre and Inisfallen Mall have loads of empty units. We don’t need another half empty shopping centre. It’s embarrassing enough as it is.” “How about build it in the site of the Old Torc Hotel? And the Outlet Centre is half empty, why not encourage more shops in that vacant space upstairs?”

Parking Solution Debate OPINION is divided on the best way to tackle Killarney’s chronic parking shortage, an issue which causes crippling congestion during busy times of the year. Last week, the team at the Killarney Advertiser presented an artist’s design for redevelopment of the Glebe car park which would triple the existing number of parking spaces on the site.

The multi-storey car park would also provide scope for social housing and apartments as well as offering retail options along the outer perimeter of the facility. These shops would generate revenue which would help pay for the project as well as make the entire development more pleasing to the eye. Our innovative suggestion has cer-

tainly created intense debate amongst locals with strong opinions on both sides of the divide. While some people are all for the idea and think it would be a great addition to the town centre, others have concerns about the location, size and cost of the car park. One thing is for certain: something needs to be done about the parking problem in Killarney.

“Another white elephant in the middle of town.” “Just make sure the parking spaces are wide enough that a parent with two or more kids can open the doors without the pressure of trying not to touch the car next to you. Even the parent baby parking spaces in town are a joke.” “While it’s a good design, it would be an eyesore. I agree, too many empty retail outlets as it is.” “The town definitely needs something done about the lack of parking.” “No hope of putting a rugby stadium in there I suppose…?”

Free Christmas Parking Kerry County Council has announced details of free parking arrangements for the Christmas season in council-owned car parks in the county’s three largest towns. Car parking will be free for the month of December in Killarney in both the High Street and Lewis Road car parks. Parking will be free up to 11am daily in the

Glebe and Fair Hill car parks and in the lower section of New Street car park. There will also be free parking in Listowel and Tralee over the festive period. The Chairman of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Sheahan, said the temporary suspension of parking charges was an effort on behalf of the council to encourage support for local businesses over the Christmas season. “As has happened in other years, Kerry County Coun-

cil is providing some amendments to the parking charges regime to give a small but significant incentive to shoppers to shop local and support local businesses at Christmas time,” he said. “Every euro spent locally supports local jobs and keeps money in the county’s economy. I would encourage people to avail of the free parking provision in the coming weeks and to consider the benefits of shopping locally this Christmas.”

St Paul’s & Lakers Make Coaching Changes ST PAUL’S and the Scotts Lakers have announced significant changes to the club’s coaching structure. A statement released before last weekend’s home game against the Ulster University Elks (see p.70) revealed that head coach Vojkan Bencic would be taking on a new director of coaching role and would “oversee all coaching at juvenile level within the St Paul’s club.” “Coach Bencic possesses a wealth of skills and knowledge after his extensive playing and coaching experiences in several European countries,” the statement read. “St Paul’s are confident that his expertise will now help enhance the overall standards of the club’s coaches and players in the future.” Former Irish senior international and St Paul’s Super League player Cormac O’Donoghue has taken over from Bencic. O’Donoghue previously coached the Lakers from 2005-07. Meanwhile, one of the St Paul’s Basketball Club original founding members Paul Sheehan is the new chairman of the juvenile section of the club. He succeeds Padraig Weldon who had stayed on in a caretaker role since the recent AGM. Padraig will now continue to serve the club as an active member at committee level on the juvenile and senior board.

“Always On” Consumer Sets Terms TOURISM has embraced the digital age with great gusto and the changeover has been so immense that the traditional visitor cycle no longer exists, the founder of the Digital Tourism Think Tank, Nick Hall, told the Let’s Talk Tourism forum in Kerry last week. He said the “always on” consumer now sets the terms for what they want and where they want to go and technology is now

driving the tourism experience. ”Mobile and social has changed everything. Wifi needs to be everywhere and it needs to be free but is also needs to be fast because that’s what the public expects,” he told the conference, which took place in The Brehon Hotel. Mr Hall said Google research shows that there are up to 420 “touch points” before a consumer makes a decision on where to go or what to do.

Berlin Trip “An Outstanding Success”

Jim Finnucane, German Ambassador Michael Collins, John Sheahan, Mayor of Kerry, Norma Moriarty, Deputy Mayor, Mike Kennelly, Mayor of Listowel and Niall Kelliher, Mayor of Killarney. Pic: Don MacMonagle

The organisers of last weekend’s threeday Kerry tourism promotional visit to Berlin have hailed it an outstanding success. Led by Minister Brendan Griffin TD and Mayor of Kerry Cllr John Sheahan, the 35-strong group, which also included Mayor of Killarney Niall Kelliher, held a series of engagements with tourism trade, media and consumer groups. They also held a high level political meeting with State President Mr Ralf Wieland in the Berlin Parliament to promote closer economic ties between Kerry, Berlin and the State of Brandenburg. The visit was in support of the new direct Ryanair flight from Berlin to Kerry and was organised by Kerry County Council, Destination Kerry and Kerry Airport and supported by Tourism Ireland, Fáilte Ireland and the Irish Embassy in Berlin. Trade representatives from all over Kerry formed part of the delegation.

Minister Griffin, who spoke in German and English, stressed the popularity of Kerry as a holiday destination for German visitors with over 250,000 now visiting the county each year, the most to any Irish county. Currently, these visitors come mainly from northern, central and southern Germany. The potential for growth from eastern Germany is now considerable, he said, with the opening up of the new direct route to Kerry. Kerry Mayor John Sheahan said that Berlin is a largely new tourism market from a Kerry perspective. “There are 3.5 million people living in the greater Berlin area and we wanted to present Kerry as an attractive holiday option to them,” he said. In his speech the mayor pointed out that the flight time from Berlin to Kerry of 2.5 hours is less than it takes to drive from Kerry to Dublin. There was laughter when he said that you also gain an hour when flying west from Germany to Ireland.

From Killarney to Kenya Charity

Words: Eve Kelliher

BL ACK FRIDAY

THE bonds of friendship between Killarney and Kenya have been as strong as every this past year, which was a busy and productive one for the Kerry-based Kenya Education Project. This comes against a background of political uncertainty and unrest in parts of Kenya. The presidential election held in August returned the sitting president Kenyatta but the result was challenged by the opposition in the courts and resulted in a re-run, a first in African politics. There was sporadic violence and some deaths due to tribal differences. Kenya Education volunteers worked in the school and village of Embulbul in July, August and September. This year for the first time a summer camp was organised and run by Katie O’Connell and James Greene, said Eddie Sheehy, Killarney, of the Kenya Education Project. “Twenty-five needy children from the village were treated to a week of Irish dance, games, arts and crafts a visit to an elephant orphanage and new shoes as a concluding gift,” said Eddie. The project continues to support needy children in the local school. “This year 70 students are being sponsored, the highest number to date, as well others in further

education,” said Eddie. Some families in the village were helped in a practical way by the purchase of beds, mattresses and blankets. Other families were helped with new school uniforms for their children. “The programme helped a number of women in the village to set up a small business venture, such as charcoal selling, hairdressing, clothes selling, cooking and selling of chips,” said Eddie. The village feeding programme was supported through the purchase of two new stoves and funding to renovate the kitchen used to feed 70 young children each week day evening. “A successful coffee morning, hosted by the Killarney Royal Hotel, along with the annual table quiz, church collection in Fossa, and support from Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, court poor box, Dóchas Drama group, an Eighties disco night in Kilcummin, Electric Aid, various primary and secondary schools and generous voluntary donations meant that the Project continues to reach out to many needy children and adults who face daily challenges in obtaining food and securing education,” added Eddie. “Thanks to everybody for the continued and committed support.”

Stocking leading fashion brands from Ireland such as Andre, Magee, Douglas, Remus and Kellerman, the ethos of Quills menswear is: “Quality at the right price.” Specialising in suits, trousers, knitwear, jeanswear and shirts, it will cater for everyone’s needs. “With Killarney bustling with a busy home market the presence of a vibrant men store, with a strong mantra on customer service, will offer the perfect opportunity for some retail therapy,” added Enda.

News Briefs ... Kerry Legend Sheehan Calls It A Day Kerry veteran Bryan Sheehan, one of the finest kickers of all time, has announced his retirement from inter-county football. The St Mary’s man made his Kerry minor debut as a 15 year old goalkeeper and now, seventeen years later, he leaves having won every honour the game has to offer. He made his senior debut in 2005 and went on to make 66 championship appearances for the Kingdom and played in seven All-Ireland Finals, scoring 6 goals and 161 points along the way. A five-time All-Ireland winner, he also won three Allianz League medals and an All-Star in 2011. “It was always a childhood dream to play for Kerry,” Sheehan said. “To do so for so long fills me with great pride.”

KILLARNEY ROTARY CLUB teed up for a spectacularly successful nighttime golf outing recently. The fun commenced at 5.30pm and continued long in to the night at Killarney Golf Club.

Organised by Killarney Rotarian James Tarrant with sponsorship from Portwest, it generated €2,500 for the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus, with the proceeds being presented last Sunday evening at the clubhouse.

“We were delighted with how successful it was, everyone enjoyed it and we plan to hold it again next year,” James told Killarney Advertiser.

Killarney’s Liberace Takes A Bow In Chicago Alex McFarlane quizzes Jack Patrick Healy on the highlights of his recent US tour

www.corriboil.com

How have you found the response of the people of Chicago to you and your music? Is the atmosphere and reception to musicians different here in Killarney? Would this inspire you to travel to more places? The US audiences are fantastic. They just “got it” in terms of my show. The performance I give is extremely flamboyant and out there. The people of Chicago were fantastic to perform to. There’s not a huge difference to the audiences in Killarney to be fair. There’s a different dynamic in a room of 1800 people to a venue of 150. I would love to see more of the world and take me show on tour across the States in 2018. Why not, the world is there to be seen right? It’s time to start spreading the Jack Patrick Healy brand I think.

What stuck out the most from your trip to Chicago that left you awestruck? What really stood out was the respect the American audiences had for my performances. They laughed, cried and cheered at all the appropriate places.

What in your opinion is the most significant point in your career to date? Performing with Sir. Cliff Richard, touring Europe with Irish Dance Shows but my most significant point was probably the opportunity to work one on one with Rebecca Storm (star of Blood Brothers and Evita) in a live televised weeklong masterclass.

So Jack, now you are officially ‘Killarney’s Liberace’, what’s next on your radar? I have a couple of really great projects in the pipeline. I can’t give away too much on those as of yet but each adventure is sure to top the next. I will be hanging around Killarney for another 12 months though. After that I’m ready to see what the world has to offer - and I’m going to grab it with both hands!

Gobnaits & Fr Andrew To Host Old Style Christmas Quiz

Go’Wan.. Go’Wan… Go’Wan… Pic: Valerie O’Sullivan

The Gobnaits, in association with Christmas in Killarney, will be hosting their own unique Christmas Quiz on Thursday, December 7 at the Laurels ‘Hall’ in Killarney. Your assistance is required to help them prepare jam sandwiches, make ‘tay’ at half time, and ‘run up town for a few bits and pieces for the raffle’. “We had a meeting at the hall last night and Fr Andrew Joy PP decided after two rounds of jam sandwiches and a pot of tay that a quiz

would be great for the parish,” said Gobnait A, adding that “poor Gobnait B has taken the tea towels off the line for the umpteenth time… We need a few shillings for one of those new fan-dangled clothes lines!” A vote was cast at the meeting and Fr Andrew was voted unanimously as Quiz Master, with all four Gobnaits in charge of the raffle and old fashioned spot prizes. Speaking after the meeting, Fr Andrew said the response from the parish has been outstanding. “Several packets of

Sunlight soap, a pattern from Tim Casey’s and USA Assorted Biscuits were all delivered to the hall,” he said. “And that’s only the spot prizes.” As for the main raffle, a salmon-coloured ticket could win you a €100 shopping voucher, with many other very generous prizes up for grabs for the lucky parishioners. It promises to be a night of fun and hilarity and, yes, some excellent raffle prizes. Tables of four will be available for €30 at the side entrance of the Laurels Bar, Market Lane. The quiz starts at 8.30pm.

The transition year students at Killarney Community College recently had the amazing experience of attending a full day public speaking workshop with professional actor Alan Devine. The students really enjoyed the workshop and they could see the benefits immediately. Speaking in front of a live audience is certainly one skill that takes practice and confidence in mastering. According to TY co-ordinator Ms Kerri McCarthy, the benefits of knowing how to communicate to an audience include sharpening critical thinking and verbal/ non-verbal communication skills. “It’s a unique experience that we are able to offer our TY students in the school,” she said. “It will benefit them throughout the rest of their lives, whether in college or the workplace.”

GET your skates on - Killarney on Ice is back in town from Friday, December 1. The hugely popular marquee-covered ice rink will once again be located in the Beech Road car park beside the tourist office and will stay open right up until January 7. Schools, youth clubs and sports teams across the county are already using the group booking discount rate to plan a session on Kerry’s only festive ice rink. Regular opening hours can be extended during the day to accommodate school groups. Rink promoter Tim O’Donoghue says value for money is key. “That’s why we have special family and group rates,” he said. “We also have loyalty cards - just ask at the box office. Ice skating is lots of fun, easily picked up, and is great exercise for all the family.

Tickets for the show, which takes place on December 7 at 8pm, are available from The Washbasket Rathmore and the INEC Box Office.

We also welcome birthday parties.” The rink also has a shop where you can pick up some refreshments and hot beverages while a seating area is provided for spectators. Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,

Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues

LEARNER DRIVERS Never before has there been more focus on the legal position governing learner drivers than at present. We are aware that the Minister for Transport, Shane Ross, has announced certain proposals which he intends to legislate for. Since the 1st September 2010 the Road Safety Authority has implemented a range of measures as part of their Graduated Driving Licencing System which they articulate shall enhance the way those learning to drive will be trained, tested and licenced. Learner drivers, as we are aware, have to pass a theory test before they can obtain a Learner Permit. If the date of issue of the first Learner Permit is on or after the 4th of April 2011 the candidate must complete Essential Driver Training (EDT). This required training consists of twelve one-hour lessons on various aspects of driving. Once this has been completed successfully the traditional Driving Test is undertaken and if passed a Certificate of Competency issues which permits the candidate to apply for a licence. MINISTER ROSS HAS PROPOSED TWO SIGNIFICANT CHANGES Firstly, he has proposed an amendment to Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act 1994. This is a provision which permits the Gardai to detain, store, release and dispose of vehicles in certain circumstances. The Minister has proposed that a learner driver, driving unaccompanied by a qualified driver will now be deemed

to be one such circumstance. This proposal forms part of the Road Traffic Amendment Bill 2017 which has recently been published by Minister Ross. The second aspect of this Bill which perhaps has received most coverage concerns the liability of the owner of a vehicle who permits their vehicle to be driven by an unaccompanied learner driver. In fact there is already a provision in law which provides that this is an offence, namely Section 39 of the Road Traffic Act 2016, however this Section has never been commenced and therefore has not taken effect. This provision makes it an offence for the owner of a vehicle to allow their vehicle to be driven by a learner driver unaccompanied but it shall be a good defence to show that it had been driven without their consent and that they had taken all reasonable precautions. Significant legal issues are most likely to arise in respect of this proposed offence. It is an offence which seeks to hold accountable one person for the actions of another. It is likely that significant legal challenge will arise in respect of the amendments being proposed by the Minister. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such, In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your Solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Casey & Company do not accept any responsibility for any errors or omissions herein.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around Opinion

Celebs Need To Apologise For Their Apologies

With revelations regarding the sexual misconduct of what seems like half of Hollywood dominating the news, we’re also being subjected to one of the most irritating aspects of modern-day celebrity culture: the halfbaked apology. Why are so many public figures incapable of offering a genuine apology? I suppose they’re just products of show business in that regard, an industry where self-preservation is key and self-deprecation gets you nowhere. In the

real world, apologies don’t come with disclaimers or caveats or deflections. If recent news confirms anything, it’s that famous people do not live in the real world. The recent spate of hastily issued celebrity apologies has thrown up some real gems. Take Irish TV personality and actor Al Porter (I’ve also seen him listed as a ‘comedian’ but I’m not having that). In a move that genuinely beggars belief, Porter, who is accused of sexually assaulting several men including a patient at St Patrick’s Mental Health Services, said his conduct was “in keeping with [his] flamboyant and outrageous public persona.”

This Tweet Sums Up His Logic Pretty Accurately:

A few weeks back, Kevin Spacey was also heavily criticised for the wording of his apology in the wake of accusations that he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old boy. For some reason, the former House of Cards star felt as though this was an appropriate time to end years of speculation and announce that he was gay. Again, the internet had the perfect response. One meme in particular captured public opinion quite succinctly. “Police: Sir, how fast do you think you were going when you drove through that stop

Trump Corner

Trump Endorses Alleged Sex Offender Moore US PRESIDENT Donald Trump has come out in defence of engulfed Republican politician Roy Moore, in spite of numerous claims surfacing that the 70 year old pursued a number of teenage girls and sexually assaulted one of them. The alleged incidents took place when Moore was in his 30s. Trump had avoided the subject since the Washington Post broke the story in early November but his comments in the White House on Tuesday seem to have clarified his stance somewhat. Moore is hoping to fill the vacant Senate seat in Alabama, the election for which will take place on December 12. “I can tell you one thing for sure,”

Never fails to entertain

Trump said, “we don’t need a liberal person in there, a Democrat – [Doug] Jones.” “[Moore] denies it,” Trump continued. “Look, he denies it. I mean, if you look at what is really going on, and you look at all the things that have happened over the last 48 hours, he totally denies it. He says it didn’t happen. You’re talking about… he said 40 years ago this did not happen.” Incredibly, Trump also left open the possibility of campaigning with Moore, saying: “I’ll be letting you know next week.” Press secretary Sarah Sanders had previously distanced the White House from Moore, stating that the election was a decision for the voters of Alabama and that, if the allegations were accurate, he should step aside.

sign? Kevin Spacey: I’m gay.” The situation is so ridiculous, celebrities will have to start apologising for their apologies. Although Al Porter would probably say he was sorry for his poor apology but it was in keeping with his flamboyant and outrageous public persona, while Spacey would use it as an opportunity to finally reveal that he’s part-Welsh.

Pressure Grows On Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald

Sinn Féin has put forward a motion of no confidence in Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald over the way she dealt with the garda whistle-blower controversy when she was Minister for Justice. Pressure has continually grown on the Tánaiste since revelations that she was aware of the former Garda Commissioner’s legal strategy in the case of garda whistle-blower Sergeant Maurice McCabe. Deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald described the strategy as “utterly malicious and designed to... ruin Sergeant McCa-

be’s life”. The e-mail was initially sent to her in May 2015 but she told the Dáil this week that she could not remember reading it. Minister for Health Simon Harris has said the Government retains full confidence in Ms Fitzgerald. Sergeant McCabe’s complaints about corruption within an Garda Síochána ultimately led to the resignation of then Minister for Justice Alan Shatter and Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan. McCabe was harassed and subjected to death threats for releasing the information.

Irish Footballers Come Up Short In Oz Despite a spirited performance in the second test, Ireland ultimately came up short in this year’s International Rules series against Australia. Ireland trailed by ten, 63-53, from the first test and the Aussies again came out on top on Saturday, eventually running out 53-50 winners for a 13-point aggregate win. Irishmen Gary Brennan and Chris Barrett scored the game’s only goals in the first quarter to give Ireland the lead but the hosts responded well and took control

of the game in the remaining periods. Monaghan sharpshooter Conor McManus kicked 16 points but it wasn’t enough for Joe Kernan’s men as a number of late scores swung the tie irreversibly in the Australians’ favour. Speaking after the game, Kernan was less than happy with the officials. The Armagh native was furious and described the refereeing as “diabolical”. The International Rules series has been played 20 times in total with both teams now having won ten times.

Skellig Michael To Be Immortalised In Lego The world-renowned Skellig Michael is about to become even more famous - the visually stunning Kerry landmark has been immortalised in Lego. The special edition set will be brought out in advance of the latest Star Wars film, The Last Jedi. The number of visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage Site has skyrocketed since it was featured in the final scene of

Star Wars: The Force Awakens two years ago. The ‘Ahch-To Island’ (as Skellig Michael is called in the movies) set is expected to retail at around €25 and will include a miniature beehive, main characters Luke Skywalker and Rey, and a new member of the Star Wars universe, the porg. The small, birdlike creature is believed to be based on the puffin. The pack will also include a fish, a frying pan and, of course, a lightsaber. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is due to be released on December 15.

Producer and rapper RZA of the celebrated hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan has sued the Brooklyn dog-walking company Woof-Tang Clan for breach of copyright. According to RZA’s claim, the Wu-Tang Clan’s name and logo are “unmistakably associated” with the pioneering group since their formation in 1993, and that Woof-Tang Clan’s attempt to trademark their name amounts to copyright infringement. Woof-Tang Clan owner Marty Cuatchon, who told the New York Daily News he was aware of the challenge, says

he’s a fan of Wu-Tang and thought the name was a good idea. According to the company’s website, “The Woof-Tang Clan is the illest group of dogs in New York City.”

Teen Pop Idol David Cassidy Dies Aged 67 Legendary American singer and actor David Cassidy has died aged 67. Cassidy, who shot to worldwide fame as a member of The Partridge Family in the 1970s, was admitted to hospital last week with liver and kidney failure. He subsequently came out of a medically-induced coma but died on November 21 “surrounded by those he loved, with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long,” a family statement read. The singer had stopped touring earlier this year as he had been suffering from dementia.

Cassidy became a star playing Keith Partridge in The Partridge Family, a musical sitcom about a mother and five children who formed a rock and roll band. Following the success of the show and the hit songs it produced, he enjoyed a massively prolific career in both music and acting. He received Grammy nominations and sold more than 30 million records worldwide. When Cassidy was at the height of his fame, his fan club was said to have more members than those of The Beatles and Elvis Presley combined.

Mugabe Granted Immunity By Zimbabwean Military Former President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe, who finally resigned on Tuesday, has been given immunity and a guarantee of his safety which will allow him and his wife to stay in the country. Mugabe had spent a week negotiating his departure deal with military officials since Zimbabwe’s army took control of Harare and placed the leader under house arrest.

Mugabe’s historic resignation brought his 37 years of oppressive rule to an end. The former leader has been accused of overseeing a series of massacres in the 1980s to consolidate his power. It is estimated that upwards of 20,000 people were killed. He has also been accused of carrying out acts of corruption in order to finance his lavish lifestyle and that of his wife, Grace.

Call For Rossbeigh Study I AM calling on Kerry County Council to carry out as a matter of priority a feasibility study in respect of the back beach at Rossbeigh and its possible use. I raised the matter at a recent meeting of the South and West Kerry Municipal District when I asked the council to look at the potential of the area with special attention been given to the breach wall and that consideration be given to developing water sports, a small pier and a marina. The Rossbeigh area is underdeveloped and ideal for maritime investment. I requested the council to expedite the funding application to the OPW for the carrying out of a wider Castlemaine Harbour coastal erosion and

coastal flooding risk management study citing that there was already an abundance of data available through the Marine Institute in Cork who have been surveying the area for a number of years. The council replied that the Rossbeigh area is being included in a funding application to the OPW for the carrying out of a wider Castlemaine Harbour coastal erosion and coastal flooding risk management study. Until this study is complete the council is not in a position to consider further development of this area. Councillor Michael Cahill, Fianna Fail, Rossbeigh

Read

The Bookworm

Reviewed: Into the Grey Zone by Adrian Owen THIS startling tale of a neuroscientific discovery revolutionises our thinking about life and death - and gives patients and their families the answers they crave. In 2006 Dr Adrian Owen and his team made medical history. They discovered a new realm of consciousness, a twilight zone somewhere between life and death. They called this the Grey Zone. The people who inhabit the Grey Zone are frequently labelled as being irretrievably lost, with no awareness and no sense of self. The shocking truth is that they are often still there, an intact mind trapped deep inside a broken body and brain,

hearing everything around them, experiencing emotions, thoughts, pleasure and pain, just like the rest of us. Not quite living, and not quite gone, they have existed silently in these shadowlands. But now, through Dr Owen’s pioneering techniques, we can talk to them - and they can talk back. These shifting boundaries of consciousness have shaken the architecture of our sense of self. We have known for a long time that a body does not define a person - but what if a brain does not define a mind? What does it mean if a mind can exist unharmed within a deeply damaged brain?

Ireland have hosted the South Americans here on two previous occasions since the stadium opened in 2010, winning 2910 in November of that year, and then beating them 46-24 in November 2012. With analysis from Brent Pope, Ronan O’Gara and Shane Horgan.

Nov 25th, Fri 22:35 Graham Norton is joined by actors Mel Gibson, Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg and John Lithgow, with music from Keisha, who performs Learn to Let Go.

Advertising Investment Philosophy

24.11.17

47

I am a believer!

Planning for your financial future will give you peace of mind today. This week, our Expert Qualified Financial Advisor, Eoin Liston, Premier Financial Services, discusses why having an Investment Philosophy that you believe in is so important.

The world of investment is complex and uncertain and it is an Adviser’s role to help investors navigate a safe path through this to achieve their financial goals. Any investment portfolio is constructed of a number of elements that contribute to the overall risk and return of the investment. These elements include Company shares that give access to businesses profits, Bonds which are loans to both companies and governments for which you receive interest, property, cash, and alternative investments which are overseen by skilled investment managers. An Adviser combines different assets to create your Investment Portfolio which drives both the return you are targeting from you investment and also seeks to minimise the risk of losing money over time.

Some Principles of Investing

1. Investment for the Long Term: Take a long term perspective of over 5 years to harness the power of compounding and to allow for inevitable short term fluctuations in value. 2. Diversify your investments: Get a good spread of assets and exposures to avoid any single investment taking you down. “Diversification is the only free lunch in investing” and it is vital not to take risk unless you are rewarded for it. 3. Don’t overpay for returns: In modern efficient markets it is extremely difficult to outperform the market as a whole. Evidence suggests that less than 10% of active managers out-perform their benchmarks over 10 years. Our portfolios capture returns largely through passive investments that offer the best value for money 4. Review your investments regularly: Ongoing monitoring and review is vital to secure returns. Your portfolio needs to be re-balanced periodically to make sure it has the correct level of risk and expected return. Also it is important to review the overall approach on a regular basis to ensure that it remains fit for purpose. 5. Stick with your Plan

Why do you need an investment philosophy?

If you do not have an investment philosophy, you will find yourself doing the following:

1. Lacking a rudder or a core set of beliefs, you will find yourself probably reading the latest financial news regularly trying to find the magic strategy that beats the market. 2. Switching from strategy to strategy, you will have to change your portfolio, resulting in high transactions costs and paying more in taxes. 3. Using a strategy that may not be appropriate for you, given your objectives, risk aversion and personal characteristics.

Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution in Miss Kensington This rosy pink hue was inspired by the Swinging ’60s. Bobbi Brown Nourishing Lipstick in Blush A muted pink, this moisturising formula is perfect for winter. Clinique Chubby Stick in Curviest Caramel A universally flattering colour that will take you from day to night. Chanel Rouge Coco in Antoinette The luxury brand offers a “your lips but better” look.

Hair & Makeup Details From The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was all about bouncy Bombshell waves, glowing and bronze skin, and flirty eye makeup and lipstick. This year’s look in Shanghai look was Parisian cat-eye from last season with a little smudgier feel for an overall softer and more carefree look. Makeup artist Tom Pecheux was behind this year’s Shanghai-ready beauty look. After creating a perfectly smudged and smoky eyeliner look (complete with two thick coats of mascara), Pecheux’s team used the Victoria’s Secret Velvet Matte Cream Lip Stain in Adored on the lips, then layered on a second color to reach the perfect pinky-nude shade for each model. Depending on their skin color, the models wore either Perfection (a dusty rose) or Love (a pink mauve). “The overall look featured a smoky eye that’s slightly naughty,” said Pechuex backstage. “Taupe and brown shades were applied with a smudged brown liner on the lower lashline that was swept up and blended into eye shadow. Highlighter was added to the inner corner of the eye for a sexy, glowing effect.”

Time For Change

Words: Grace Foley

The Best Thing That Could Have Happened To Me “AND will you sing on the day yourself, Grace?” Surprisingly this is the question most people ask me when I tell them I am getting married! This time last year I was completely consumed in my new album. The first time I held that CD in my hands I felt what it truly is to be proud of yourself and now, one year on, I am happier than I ever thought possible. For years I struggled with keeping a balance between my career and spending my life with those I love. It is a well-known fact that musicians and singers spend a great deal of their time away from home and family. A number of years ago my life’s path changed. At the time I thought I had lost who I was but it turned out that it was the best thing that could ever have happened to me. If I had not been derailed I may not have met my

Etihad Abu Dhabi Grand Prix - Race Sky Sports F1 HD 1:00pm

An exhausting thirteen round WRC championship saw Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle round off a difficult season in Australia last weekend with seventh overall on the event. The Citroen crew were off to a strong start with second overall for the opening seven stages slipping to fourth by SS12. They lost seven minutes on SS13 after colliding with a bridge, dropping them to tenth overall. Unfortunately, they retired by SS15. Re-joining under Rally 2 rules on the final day in thirteenth place, they climbing to seventh over the remaining six stages. Citroen teammate, Waterford man

Craig Breen was fairing out better in fourth overall until a heavy accident on SS17 on the final day put them out of the event. Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville took the win by 22.5 seconds over Ford’s Ott Tanak and with teammate Hayden Paddon a further 59.1 seconds behind. Season round up next week.

Final 2017 F1 Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes have the F1 titles wrapped up for almost a month now. The final race of the season in Abu Dhabi this weekend is only for race honours. Many teams will be focusing on systems for next year, the after-event party and pitlane gossi-

Gossip

World champion Lewis Hamilton warned Sebastian Vettel not to “disrespect” him again after being hit by the Ferrari driver under the safety car during June’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Former Ferrari president Luca di Mon-

tezemolo warned the Scuderia not to get carried away by victory in Brazil at the weekend, claiming Lewis Hamilton would have won if he started from pole. Former F1 team owner Flavio Briatore says Ferrari made a mistake by not signing Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. The Brazilian Grand Prix may be axed after five different teams were attacked by armed gangs during the race weekend. Mercedes’ world champion Lewis Hamilton said his mistake in qualifying gave him a chance to practice his overtaking in the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Always remembered and missed dearly, Love Mam and Dad xxx Birthday Remembrance for Stephen O’Sullivan, late of Slievenamon House, Minish, Killarney whose Birthday occurs on the 29th November. Today would have been such a special day, but now it brings sadness and sorrow. If we could share just one more day, if there was one more tomorrow. But birthdays are a time for reflection, To look over a year’s past, And I cant believe another years gone by, the time it goes so fast.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. M.M

Mihail Saves The Day With Incredible Buzzer Beater The Lakers have Bulgarian point guard Mihail Kapitanov to thank for last weekend’s crucial victory, writes Adam Moynihan

National League: Division 1 Scotts Lakers 97 Ulster University Elks 93 (OT) The Scotts Lakers kept their league aspirations alive last Saturday night with a dramatic overtime win against the Ulster University Elks. A poor third quarter showing allowed the visitors to power into a 16-point lead but a spirited comeback was finally complete when point guard Mihail Kapitanov drained a three at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. The hosts finished strongly in OT and eventually clinched the victory in what was their first game under new head coach Cormac O’Donoghue. Supporters were keen to see what changes club legend O’Donoghue would make to a team that had performed inconsistently under former boss Vojkan Bencic. According to a statement released last Friday, Bencic has now taken on a new Director of Coaching role at St Paul’s and will oversee all coaching at juvenile level. Perhaps the most notable adjustment made by the new coach was the amount of game time given to American guard Justin Tuason. With only one American allowed on the floor at any one time, Tuason has been playing second fiddle to Antuan Bootle since the 6’8” Texan returned from injury at the end of September. Bootle has been excellent at times for the Lakers but, if last Saturday is anything to go by, it seems as though O’Donoghue might be willing to give Tuason a more equal share of the minutes. The Lakers started quite well against the Elks and led 9-2 when new signing Dan Griffin completed a nice three-point play. Mark Greene hit a three, grabbed a rebound and set up Griffin in the space of a few seconds but a couple of three-pointers from American Luke Eddy kept the Elks within touching distance. The Ulstermen finished the quarter very much in the ascendency and led 18-22 at the break, Lithuanian big man Tomas Banys in particular catching the eye during an impressive 12-0 run. The Lakers needed a spark and Justin Tuason duly obliged as he hit consecutive baskets early in the second, but three consecutive threes from Eimantas Cernivicius, Brendan Mullen and Eddy fired the Elks into an 11-point lead. Three-pointers from Kapitanov and Bootle kept the Lakers in contention but they still trailed at half time, 38-44. The Lakers have struggled in the third quarter all season and the Elks completely dominated the period in this one, racing into a 16-point lead and silencing

the sizeable home crowd in the process. Tuason set up Andrew Fitzgerald to make it a 12-point game but it looked as though the home team were facing a real uphill battle heading into the fourth. They started the final quarter well, however, as Mark Greene knocked down a three and Pádraig Lucey powered his way inside for a lay-up. Luke Eddy was keeping the scoreboard ticking over for the Elks but two beautiful assists from Tuason to Fitzgerald cut the deficit to just three. Unerring free throws by Banys and Darius Suginas kept the Lakers at arm’s length before the Elks sent Lucey to the line with a minute to play and the score at 70-76. Lucey made the first and missed the second but great hustle from Mark Greene kept the rebound alive. Lucey got the ball back in his hands and snuck inside to make it a three-point game. The Lakers got a stop at the defensive end and thought they had a chance of three-point play moments later when Justin Tuason flew acrobatically through the air to tip in a rebound as the referees blew for a foul on Lucey on the floor. To the dismay of the home fans, the officials wiped out Tuason’s basket and Lucey went on to miss his free throws. The score remained 93-96 and the game appeared to be slipping away from Cormac O’Donoghue’s side. But there was still time for one more twist. The Elks missed their free throws and, with 11 seconds to play, the Lakers charged forward one last time. Under pressure in the back court, Greene dished to Tuason who ducked and dived his way into a shooting position but couldn’t find an opening.

Tuason fired the ball back to Greene who swung it out to Kapitanov and the diminutive guard rose and knocked down a perfect three-pointer as the horn sounded to send the home support into raptures. Momentum was with the Lakers and Lucey scored the first four points in overtime but the Elks kept hanging on in there. Then Tuason, who had already shone in regulation, really came to the fore. He forced a turnover and broke away for a lay-up before nailing a sweet jumper to make it 85-80 with two minutes to play. Mullen converted a huge three-point play at the other end but Tuason again came up trumps, athletically getting to the basket for another lay-in. Eddy went two for two from the line and when the Lakers failed to score on their next attack, the Elks had a golden opportunity to tie it up with a fast break. Luckily for the Lakers, Philip O’Connor recognised the danger and stepped in to take a crucial charge at half court and the ball was back in Killarney hands. O’Connor got possession in the resulting play and fed Tuason who buried a long-range three and the Lakers led by five with a minute to go. Luke Eddy, who was excellent for the Elks, kept his team in contention with a couple of threes down the stretch but solid free throw shooting from Kapitanov kept them at bay. Fittingly, it was Kapitanov who had the final word as he dropped in two free ones with 4.5 seconds left to make it 97-93 and finally seal the hardearned victory. Next up for the Lakers is another huge home game against Fr Mathews and O’Donoghue and his team will know that nothing but a win will do.

Lakers Overcome 16-Point Deficit PLAYING under new coach Cormac O’Donoghue for the first time, Scotts Lakers recovered from a 16-point deficit at one stage to clinch a sensational overtime win over Ulster Elks in Killarney Sports Centre on Saturday night. Trailing 63-47 late in the third quarter, the Killarney side gradually clawed their way back and a dramatic buzzer-beating three-pointer from Mihail Kapitanov at the death forced one period of overtime where the Killarney side took control to clinch the victory. It was a big win for the Killarney side and it puts them in a strong position to challenge for a place in the top half of the league table. Coach

Cormac O’Donoghue got a great all-round team performance from his players. Lucey, Tuason and Kapitanov were all worthy contenders for an MVP award while Greene, Griffin, Bootle, Fitzgerald, O’Connor and Clernon all made significant contributions. Scotts Lakers are at home again this weekend and welcome Fr Mathews to Killarney Sports Centre on this Saturday night, November 25 at 7.30pm. The Cork side are a formidable force and are led by the outstanding Marcus Thomas, one of the most talked about and highly-rated Americans ever to play in Ireland. He has been clocking up phenomenal scoring returns in recent weeks in-

cluding a very impressive triple double last weekend which included a staggering 61 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. Scotts Lakers will have their work cut out trying to contain this scoring machine while Fr Mathews can also call on the experienced Mike McGinn, a former Super League player with Neptune. This is actually a double-header weekend for Scotts Lakers. An arduous fixture scheduling will involve a quick turnaround and have them on the road to Kilkenny early on Sunday morning for a 1pm tip-off. The Fr Mathews game on Saturday night will also be a dress rehearsal for the National Cup quarter final against the same opposition in Cork next week.

Scotts Lakers v Fr Mathews: Five Things To Watch Out For

The Lakers need to keep the momentum going following last weekend’s triumph, writes Adam Moynihan

National League: Division 1 Scotts Lakers v Fr Mathews Saturday, November 25 at 7.30pm (Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre) 1. The Lakers need to go back-to-back. The Lakers had the perfect start to their first season back in the big leagues when they beat the Titans and LIT back in September but their form since then has been inconsistent at best. They’ve failed to win consecutive games in the nine weeks since that win up in Limerick and so find themselves eighth in the table with a record of four wins and five defeats. Playing at home for the second weekend in a row provides them with the perfect opportunity to get a run going at a crucial time of the season.

2. A real six-pointer. A win and three points on Saturday night would draw the Lakers level with sixth place Fr Mathews on fifteen. Defeat, meanwhile, would put the Cork outfit six points clear with a game in hand. When every team has played each other once (the last round of fixtures are scheduled for mid-December), the top seven teams advance to the next phase of competition. There are already a handful of teams Cormac O’Donoghue’s side are unlikely to catch. The last thing they need is another name on that list.

3. Free-scoring Mathews will be hard to stop. Fr Mathews, who play their home games in Coláiste Chríost Rí, have won five of their eight games so far this season and lead the league in points per game (93). They’ve scored 90+ points in each of their last five games and have broken the 100-point barrier three times, most recently last weekend when they demolished the EJ Sligo AllStars 124-73. To put that into context, the Lakers have only managed more than 90 on two occasions. The home defence will need to find a way of keeping the ball out of the hands of 6’3” swingman Marcus Thomas; in his last outing, the El Salvador native racked up an incredible tally of 61 points.

4. New coach, new Lakers? The club obviously felt a change was needed on the sideline as they brought in Cormac O’Donoghue to take over head coach duties last week. The decision seemed to reap instant rewards as the Lakers rallied from 14 points down to beat the Elks in overtime but O’Donoghue will be well aware that they were one missed shot away from losing. While Coach Bencic favoured Antuan Bootle over Justin Tuason, O’Donoghue gave both Americans 25 minutes last Saturday and it ultimately paid dividends, Tuason making some huge baskets down the stretch to help his side to victory. It will be interesting to see if the new boss implements further changes to the rotation for this one.

5. Home fans could make the difference. The Ulster University game was a real rollercoaster of emotions for Lakers fans. A good start was followed by a bad slump, and a rousing comeback appeared to be destined for failure until Mihail Kapitanov drained a three-pointer at the buzzer. The home team went on to win in OT, cheered on all the way by the re-energised St Paul’s faithful. When the team gets going, the fans really get behind them and the players feed off that energy in return. Fr Mathews are sure to provide a very stern test but if the home crowd can make their presence felt from the off, the Lakers have a great chance of pulling off another memorable win.

Crokes Pull Out Of Legion Clash The controversial move has caused plenty of consternation over the last seven days, and rightly so says Adam Moynihan The local footballing community has been locked in debate this past week since Dr Crokes’ decision to not field a team for their O’Donoghue Cup semi-final against fierce rivals Legion. The Lewis Road club released a statement last Thursday saying they wouldn’t be participating in the highly anticipated match due to the “close proximity of our game against Nemo Rangers in the final of the Munster Senior Club competition listed for Sunday, November 26.” The statement went on to say that this stance “should not be misconstrued as meaning that we are conceding the game to Killarney Legion,” and that they hoped the East Kerry Board would reschedule the fixture. It’s my understanding that they wanted to play the game the Wednesday night after the Munster Final (November 29) and then play the final, if they made it, on the Sunday. The team are going on holiday to New York the week after. No such compromise was reached and Legion will now advance to the final of the district’s showpiece competition. The decision, apparently made by the Crokes management team, has been met with widespread disappointment and I have to say that I’d be of the same mind. I understand Pat O’Shea wanting to protect his players, that’s his job. They’ve played a crazy amount of football in the past couple of years and they probably do deserve a break. Facing your local rivals in a championship game seven days before a Munster Final is far from ideal, especially when the only thing that matters to the Crokes right now is winning another All-Ireland. You have to win Munster before you can do that, so beating Nemo on Sunday is naturally their number one priority. What I can’t understand is effectively pulling out of the O’Donoghue Cup. The East Kerry Board had set precedent in the previous round when Firies tried the exact same thing against the exact same opposition. Firies also wanted their game against Legion to be moved as they were in championship action the following weekend. The East Kerry Board refused and fined them (I believe) €800 for not fulfilling the fixture. So Crokes must have known what was going to happen if they refused to play, but they did it anyway. Some people seem to think that the East Kerry Board should be doing all they can to help Crokes win Munster but the East Kerry Board have to answer to every club in Kerry, not just Crokes. It’s not like pulling out was the only option available to them. As far as I

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy Ireland continued their winning ways last weekend with a 3 point win over Fiji. The final score of 23 points to 20 to the home side belied how vibrant the Fiians were particularly in the second half and it took a penalty from Munster’s own Ian Keatley to grab the last gap winner. To be fair to Joe Schmidt he started a largely seconds team and went out to give youth a chance making 13 changes to the team which beat South

can make out, there were four possible courses of action: (a) Play a full strength team against Legion. Yes, you run the risk of picking up a couple of injuries but guys can very easily get injured in training. There’s an increased likelihood of something happening in a game, obviously, but realistically how many injuries are you going to pick up in one match? Even if Crokes lost, say, three players for the Munster Final, which would be highly irregular, would they really be in that much trouble against Nemo? Another bonus is that you might qualify for an O’Donoghue Cup Final. As dominant as the Crokes have been in recent times, they actually haven’t won this particular competition since 2013. (b) Rest some key players for the Legion game. Crokes probably have the deepest squad in Ireland and while I don’t think they would necessarily beat Legion without all their star players, they could certainly be competitive. (c) Play their B team. Crokes’ B team were recently promoted to Division 3 of the County League so they’re no mugs. They wouldn’t beat the Legion seniors but it would have been a great experience for a group of young players, most of whom are yet

to get their break in the first team. (d) Pull out of the competition entirely (aka the nuclear option). No solution was ideal but this, in my opinion, was by far the least favourable. It certainly won’t sit well with Legion, or Kilcummin who lost to Crokes by a point in the quarters. Above all else, it’s a crushing blow to the O’Donoghue Cup. How can a competition survive if its biggest and most successful team decides it has better things to do than play a semi-final against their town rivals? People often talk about how the FA Cup lost its magic the year Manchester United withdrew to play in the World Club Cup. The O’Donoghue Cup, already much-maligned for its lack of competitiveness (two winners in 11 years) and drawn out schedule, could be destined for a similar fate. As for Legion, they now haven’t played in ten weeks (TEN) and literally haven’t kicked a ball in this year’s East Kerry Championship, yet somehow they find themselves preparing for a final date with Rathmore. It’s a farcical situation. Perhaps one of the worst things about this whole debacle is that, regardless of who goes on to lift the cup, the winners will forever have an asterisk beside their name.

Africa the previous weekend. The choice would have been to play the full strength team and rack up a possible cricket score or give the younger players a chance. In my view Schmidt did the right thing and handed new caps to a few players in the process including Munster’s Chris Farrell who had a great match. With Rhys Ruddock handed the captaincy and Joey Carberry starting at fly half, the younger players got a chance to shine. It was good to see Ultan Dillane back from injury. Munster’s Andrew Conway deserved his man of the match award and probably should have won the same award the previous weekend against the

Springboks. All in all not a bad showing from the Munster contingent with CJ Stander coming on from the bench to add impetus when needed. Next up Ireland take on Argentina and I’m sure that Schmidt will revert to his strongest side. The Puma’s beat Italy at the weekend and should provide a sterner test than Fiji. Ultan Dillane, Jack Conan and Darren Sweetnam will give Joe Schmidt a selection headache ahead of another sell out at the Aviva. Three wins from three would be the expectation ahead of the November Series and it certainly looks like the lads are on course for this. We will know for sure tomorrow.

Munster Club SFC Football Final Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald

Dr Crokes will defend their Munster Club SFC title against Nemo Rangers at Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday next, November 26. Throw-in is fixed for 2pm. The Cork club was founded in 1922, an amalgamation of two Cork city clubs, Nemo and Rangers. They have blossomed winning the All Ireland club title on 7 occasions, more than any other club in Ireland. They won the big one in 1973, 1979, 1982, 1989, and 1994 and in 2003. They won the Cork SFC on 15 occasions. Their best known players over the years include Billy Morgan, Dinny Allen, Frank Cogan, Tony Nation, Mickey Niblock and Colin Corkery. They have close links with Coláiste Chriost Rí. Crokes on the other hand is a much older club. It was founded in 1886 and won two All-Ireland Club titles, in 1992 and they are the current holders of the Andy Merrigan Cup. Their best known players include Dick Fitzgerald, Paul Russell, the Myers, Tadhgie Lyne, Teddy O’Connor, Dan Kavanagh along with current players Colm Cooper and Eoin Brosnan. Nemo beat the ‘Barrs in the Cork County Final and had a runaway win over Adare in the recent Munster club semi-final. Crokes got the better of South Kerry in the Kerry SFC and defeated Kilmurray-Ibrickane 2-19 to 0-10 to qualify for the Munster Final. Managed by Larry Kavanagh, Nemo’s best known players include Paul Kerrigan, Luke Connolly, Alan O’Donovan, Barry O’Driscoll, Paddy Gumley, Jack Horgan and Colin O’Brien. Crokes can call on Colm Cooper, Eoin Brosnan, Shane Murphy, Fionn Fitzgerald, Kieran O’Leary, Daithí Casey the current captain, Johnny Buckley and David O’Leary. Crokes have the better options coming off the bench and that may be the decisive factor. It is very hard to call and it may take a replay to determine the destination of the title. They last met in the 2010 Munster final which Nemo won 1-15 to 1-13.

Nominations for County Convention All nominations for Officer posts at County Convention are now known following the passing of the declaration deadline on Monday evening. John O’Donoghue, head coach of Killarney Celtic’s Football for All programme, talks to Adam Moynihan about his playing days, his former teammates and the current crop of Celtic stars

Hi John. How would you sum up Celtic’s year? Groundbreaking. Brian Spillane and Eoghan Donnellan went outside the county expecting to be in the next round of the FAI Junior Cup and got to the semi-final. What was your personal highlight? The FAI Junior Cup quarter final at home against Janesboro. What a night! How has the 2017/18 season been going? We’re unbeaten and, more importantly, playing well. Who’s your favourite current Celtic player? I’m not sure… I haven’t got just one but any Ardshan/Ballyspillane players are closer to my heart. If you could sign one player from Athletic, who would it be? A few, no doubt, would enhance the team but my money goes after Chairman Mike O’Shea and a two-pronged chair with his friend Paul Sherry (our current chairman). A few questions about your former teammates. Who would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? Packie O’Connor. I’d rather wait for emergency services ‘cause I know he’d find a way out no matter how dangerous. Who would have been the best at Tinder? There was no need for Tinder back then as soccer took precedence. Who was the biggest moaner? We moaned when we had to as a unit. Who was the worst-dressed? That would have to be myself I’d say... I was wearing red socks and patent shoes long after they went out of fashion. Who spent the most time in the gym? There was no need for a gym with Peter McGrath up in Spa. “Through muck and gutter,” as Frank Roberts would say. If you could bring back one of your ex-teammates to line out for Celtic this year, who would it be? Colm Huggard. He gives that bit extra in midfield. Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? One of two. Gerry McGowan was a class above everyone else and Peter O’Brien could be put on any team anywhere in the country. Who was the best athlete you’ve ever played with? Colman O’Shea. Who was your toughest ever opponent? Probably Billy Kerins from Tralee Dynamos. If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? I’d give up soccer before I had to change colours but I would transfer to Scotts Lakers. It’s hard to beat basketball as a spectator sport.

What’s your proudest sporting moment? A trip to Dublin to play against Kinvara Boys in the early 90s. And the most embarrassing? Getting sent off after colliding with my own teammate. If you had to compare yourself to a professional athlete, who would it be? Paul McGrath. If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? Larry Bird, Eric Cantona and Nelson Mandela. What are your five favourite sports in order? Soccer, basketball, GAA, rugby and darts. Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good that? Cricket. Fast spin bowler. What’s the best sporting moment of all time? Stuttgart ’88. One header changed everything. Do you have any supersitions? Not now but when I played I wore yellow shorts and number 14. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? The Cork City FC app. What’s your most-used emoji? Haven’t come across them yet! What’s the best show on TV? Soccer Republic. What’s your favourite song at the moment? ‘Addicted to You’ by Picture This. At least four times dropping the girls to school in the morning.

Sport John O’Donoghue

What would you sing at karaoke? ‘Sweet Caroline’ by Neil Diamond and let the crowd take over. Who’s the most famous person in your phone? Joe Gaffey. Who would play you in a movie about your life? Adrian O’Donoghue, my brother, up to the age of forty and my dad Sean O’Donoghue in the latter years. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. And last question: Can you tell me a joke? Paddy Irishman, Paddy Englishman and Paddy Scotsman walked into a bar. The barman turns around and says, “what is this, some kind of joke?” Good one! Thanks John.

€8,250. Killarney Legion GAA JUVENILE REVIEW: With the whistle blown on our boy’s teams for the season we take a look back at the year’s endeavor. Our U12 boys made great progress throughout the year. With the County league having a grading phase whereby you are placed in a division initially and your results dictate your next step the lads took a little time to find their feet. A trait of this age group seemed to be the strength of a few rural clubs with the traditional stronger clubs finding that there is a lot of talent in these areas and it will certainly make for interesting competition in the years to come. It was towards the end of the year before our lads really started to play towards their full potential and it is our intention that they continue to progress. Our U14s this year made superb progress. Capturing the East Kerry League Division 1 title was the obvious highlight as well as reaching the East Kerry Division 1 Championship final. Indeed, such was the level of their performances towards the years end that you could argue that they were playing at a higher capacity than they were earlier in the campaign when they bowed out of the County League at the semi final stage. It was a case of so near yet so far for our U16 boys. Reaching the Division 1 final of both the East Kerry Championship and County League see us ranked right up there at the top. And while the defeats were agonizing it gives the lads a

great platform to build on. LOTTO: NO WINNER, Numbers 5 - 9 - 11 – 14. Next week’s jackpot is €17,500, Draw Murphy’s next Sunday November 26th @ 9pm Milltown Listry Ladies Football. Austin Stacks continued to play with great team spirit and won the game on a scoreline of 6 goals and 11 points to 5 goals and 8 points. Well done to both teams for a great game of football but especially to Milltown Listry on their great victory. Mid Kerry GAA MID KERRY SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL saw holders Beaufort retain the Michael O’Connor Memorial Cup defeating Glenbeigh/Glencar 1-14 to 0-14.
