When a relatively straightforward rail journey from Galway to Killarney turned to a nightmare, three strangers experienced a Christmas miracle and got home in time for the holidays.
| By Sean MoriartyCara Ní Chofaigh, a NUI Galway student and an employee of a Galway-based citizens support agency, urgently needed to get home to Kells this week as she is back working over the weekend.
She left Céannt Station Galway on Tuesday, and expected to arrive in Killarney at 10.15pm later that evening where her mother was waiting to bring her on the final leg of her journey.
She made it to Colbert Limerick Station a little later than planned due to signalling issues.
That meant she missed her connecting train to Limerick Junction and onward connection to Killarney via Mallow. At this point Irish Rail staff advised her not to travel to Limerick Junction as she would have been stranded there.
Two more young women, strangers to
Cara, found themselves in the same predicament on a lonely platform in Limerick.
Cara admitted that she knew one of the women to see but did not know her personally, and that the third woman was a Limerick-based tourist on the way to Killarney to visit friends.
Irish Rail staff were trying desperately to find solutions, the three women were offered a bus to Tralee and an onward connection to Killarney by taxi but that would mean they would not arrive at their final destination until well after 1am.
“A man called Tony stepped up and said he would drive us to Killarney, it was all very surreal,” Cara told the Killarney Advertiser.
“He went out of his way. He was supposed to collect his son from the cinema at 11.30pm but, instead he was driving
us to Killarney, it was just amazing.” The three women eventually arrived in Killarney at 11pm, 45 minutes later than planned. In an ironic twist, they met their Mallow train in Farranfore after that was also delayed due to the same signalling issues.
“All in all we were about 15 minutes late,” added Cara. “I was able to tell my mother the whole story on the drive down to Kells, she was laughing and kept saying ‘only something like this could happen to you’.”
Cara is only home for Christmas for a few days. She is due back in Galway today (Friday) as she is scheduled to work for the citizens support agency over the weekend.
“At one point I really thought I would not get home for Christmas,” she said. “It is a lot easier to get connections back to Galway late at night and I was considering going back up.”
Instead, thanks to the Irish Rail employee, she was able to spend Wednesday and Thursday with family in South Kerry.
The sporting and business communities, shocked at the sudden death Pat Sheehan on Monday, have paid tributes this week.
The 52-year-old Headford native and Kilcummin resident was highly popular at his work place in the Gleneagle Hotel and was hugely influential in Camogie circles both locally and across the county.
Pat spent 26 years working for visiting conferences at the Gleneagle and INEC.

He was also a coach with the Kerry minor camogie team.
“All the girls remember his big smile,” Killarney Camogie Chairperson, Sarah Dineen, told the Killarney Advertiser.
“They are devastated. There was a great atmosphere within the club and he created that atmosphere.”

| By Sean MoriartyThat is according to Cllr Marie Moloney who, along with all her elected colleagues, have been pushing to find a solution for the site that has been vacant since 2012.
There is a dire need for housing in the Killarney area but despite several ideas put forward to do something with St Finan’s, so far, nothing has come to fruition.
This week 14 one hundred-year-old derelict cottages were handed over to Fingal County Council.
The north County Dublin houses were previously used to house staff at the nearby St Ita’s psychiatric hospital.
They have been vacant for over 20 years and have fallen in to a state of disrepair but Fingal County Council plans to turn them into social housing under a €4 mil-
lion restoration plan.
The HSE maintains that the St Finan’s site is for sale at the full market value but so far no realistic bidder has emerged.
“If the HSE can do it there they can do it here in Killarney,” Cllr Moloney told the Killarney Advertiser.
“It is not beyond the bounds of possibility.”
While welcoming the construction of the new community hospital on the grounds of St Finan’s she has raised concerns that the HSE have yet to reveal plans for the existing District Hospital on St Margaret’s Road.
Killarney has had more than its fair share of abandoned buildings in recent years, but plans are now in place to redevelop the Áras Pádraig and Kerry ETB has ambitions to build a college campus on the site of the old Pretty Polly factory.
“The last thing Killarney needs is another idle building. I don’t know what the big secret is but the HSE won’t tell us what their plans are for the District Hospital. It is all cloak and dagger.”
Dennis Earlie made a short film ‘Lost Souls' featuring local actors based on a poem of the same name by Kevin McManus who was inspired by the recollections of his father.
Kevin's father immigrated to England in the late 1950s and worked in construction. He often spoke about how some of the young Irish men he worked with gradually spent more and more time in the pubs due to loneliness and homesickness, and would drink to ease the pain. This meant that eventually they got sacked, had no place to go and ended up homeless. These young men were essentially, 'Lost Souls'.
Dennis is an award-winning cinematographer, director and voiceover artist. Like Kevin, his father left for England to find work three months before Dennis was born. He first met his father when he was 18 years of age on a railway station in Stockport Manchester, when he too moved to England as a young trainee. He did meet his father on a further three occasions.
The last one was to give a formal identification in a morgue in London. To Dennis, Kevin’s poem epitomises what his father’s life was like as was so many men and woman, who left for England. "Once I read and narrated the poem for

"I had a fantastic crew and cast, and I can’t thank Padrig O’Connor, Anne Browne, Elaine Shine and our assistant director Kyla Shine-Leane enough, and a special thank you to the K-Town Bar and Restaurant for allowing us to film there."
The film was screened at the Blissfest333 and Nortopia Films awards in the Cottonwood Centre for the Arts Colorado Springs Colorado, USA. 'Lost Souls' was also shortlisted for the Drumshanbo International Poetry Film Festival, the O’Bhael International Festival and the London Lift-Off Film Festival. It has been released on media platforms including YouTube.
There was widespread sadness within the St Francis Special School community when news spread of Jake Leane's passing.
The 14-year-old was a long time student at the school and was much loved by fellow pupils and staff there.
He died at his Lawlor’s Cross home on Thursday last (December 15) surrounded by family.
“Jack had a significant impact on everyone who knew him. He was the sweetest soul with a beautiful smile and a mischievous glint in his eye,” said school principal Keith Ó Brolacháin.
“Jack’s was a life lived entirely with love and he shall be remembered with love always. Our hearts are with his devoted family, [best friend] Liz and all who were blessed to know him. Jack bestowed the gift of his smile on us all, even through his struggles."
That famous smile was remembered by staff and pupils this week when they all wore a “Smile for Jack” pin badge. Jack was laid to rest at Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery on Sunday morning.
He is sadly missed by his mom Annette, dad Padraig, his brothers Gary, Ryan and Rory, grandparents Paddy Leane and Chris and Maura Kissane, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, neighbours, his best friends Liz and Fr Derek and his many friends in St Francis Special School.

"Our Giving Gifts campaign is an opportunity to encourage children to be mindful of other people’s needs and to give something back to their community," Mary Carroll, Chairperson of the Gaelscoil Parents Council, said.
"This year we decided to link with St Columbanus Nursing Home, and an important element of this was that the children wrote notes or cards to the residents, which gave them an opportunity
to reflect on their lives and to start a conversation with them.”
She added that at this time of year when there is so much emphasis on children receiving, it is timely to give them the opportunity to practice the true spirit of Christmas where they are giving and thinking of others.
"Over the past few weeks, the children have been bringing in items and filling the ‘giving box’ in their classroom.”
Parents and children from the school delivered the gifts and notes directly to the nursing home. The staff of St Columbanus were overjoyed to receive the gifts which will be distributed amongst residents in time for Christmas.
If you are looking for a way to burn off the Christmas excess then Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club has the answer.
The club is hosting its eighth annual Christmas Walk on December 28.
It will get underway at 2pm from Killarney Racecourse and entry fee donations will be given to the Killarney branch of the Order of Malta.
“Registration will begin at 1pm and
there will 5k and 10k options on offer,” said club PRO Tom Leslie.
“We would like to thank everyone who helped the club grow in 2022 and welcome everyone again in 2023.”
As an added bonus, the club is inviting classic car owners to bring their cars on the day and display them on the grounds of Killarney Racecourse for the duration of the walk.

A local cycling club which encourages a healthy lifestyle for youngsters is to benefit from €8,540 - thanks to a Christmas donation.
By Michelle CreanEmployees from Mondelez Rathmore presented the funds to the Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club this week following their annual fundraising events.
Mondelez has been supporting local charity/non-profit organisations in the locality since 2006 raising a total of €197,000 over that time period.
Over the last 16 years they have supported Kerry Mountain Rescue, Air Ambulance, Build4Life, East Kerry Mental Health Association, and Kerry Health Link Bus.
The employees at Mondelez run a number of events during the year including an annual sponsored walk from Rathmore to Ballyvourney, Golf Classic and some on site raffles.
"Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club is a local organisation close to us here at Mondelez Rathmore and it seemed fitting to support an organisation where less than one hundred young people depend on what this great facility offers to them," David O'Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser.
The purpose of Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club is to promote underage cycling from
age four upwards on an off-road environment, teaching them skills that make them competent cyclists so they can progress on to competition or on road cycling when they pass 10 years of age.
The club uses a purpose built off-road cyclo-cross track to avoid the risks associated with road traffic. Since it began the club attracts kids that may struggle to excel at team sports as they can still have fun without having to compete. Recently they have had interest from parents who have kids with special needs who can cycle and wish to participate in group activity with their friends, their brothers and sisters. Also one of the key focuses of the club is to promote young people to build up their fitness levels and embrace a healthy lifestyle both physical and mental health.
The funding will maintain the off-road cyclocross track and to commence the extension and upgrade to the track, David added.
"Funding will also purchase bikes that can be lent to kids to use while on the track as some families may not have means to purchase bikes in good working safe condition."
Kilcummin GAA Ladies are planning to turn pink and it's all for charity.
The local committee have been focused on fundraising for cancer treatment every Christmas since 2013 and this year, once again they have organised a 'Pink Night' in Kilcummin GAA Club Bar on January 6 at 8pm.
Traditionally organised for Women's Christmas, it has always been a huge success with fantastic support from Kilcummin and the surrounding areas.
Over the years they have raised over €15,000 for various charities. This year, the funds raised will go to 'Comfort for Chemo' in their bid to build a much needed new Chemotherapy Unit in
UHK.
"The night itself is a fun-filled occasion with live music from Derry and Rosie Healy, party games, spot prizes, novelty quiz and rounded off with a disco by Declan McCarthy," Niamh Dwyer said.
"Admission is free and tickets will be sold on the night for some amazing door prizes and raffles for prizes including overnight hotel breaks, hampers, restaurant vouchers, hair vouchers and much much more."
Chairperson Carmel O'Riordan and fellow ladies are appreciative of the generosity of their sponsors and said that there will also be prizes for 'Best Dressed in Pink' on the night.
"Make Kilcummin GAA your destination, bring friends, have a night to remember and support a cause close to our hearts."
Griffin was widely expected to get a Junior Ministerial portfolio in Taoiseach Leo Varadkar's reshuffle on Wednesday afternoon.
“It is with regret that I am unable to take on a ministerial position at this particular time due to family reasons,” said Griffin. “I will continue to carry out my duties as a TD for Kerry with commitment and dedication. I wish my friend and colleague, An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, every success in his important work for our country and I thank him for considering me. I send my heartiest congratulations to my colleagues who have been appointed to ministerial roles and wish them well.”

Wanderful Christmas is a digital orienteering experience for families who are invited to follow the map and scan the special markers placed around the town and in the National Park to meet hidden virtual Christmas characters.
Those that unlock all the characters receive a sought-after 'Wanderful' certificate and the whole aim of the initiative, promoted by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, is to use technology to get children outdoors and more active.
This is Wanderful’s second collaboration with the National Parks as, earlier this year, they lined up to launch Ciar’s Quest in Ross Island, enticing almost one thousand families to meet and learn about the hidden wildlife of the park.
The Wanderful team is once again delighted to partner with the NPWS and Christmas in Killarney to encourage
families to get active and enjoy Killarney town and the 26,000-acre National Park during the festive season.
The trail has been a huge hit with families so far with hundreds of downloads already and the activity will be available at wanderful.ie/christmas right through the school holidays as part of the Christmas in Killarney Festival.
This is a free, daytime, family fun event with parental supervision required. The trail starts at the ANAM Cultural Centre on East Avenue Road and loops through the National Park and Killarney town.
It involves a 2.7km buggy-friendly walk and the App monitors players’ progress so they can do the trail all in one go or come back again and again to complete the route.
The Christmas in Killarney festival is run by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and is supported by Kerry County Council and Fáilte Ireland.
Santa Claus and the Gap of Dunloe Poney Men were in a very giving mood this week as they donated €2,185.50 to Kerry Hospice.
Dermot O'Reilly received a call to visit Kate Kearney's Cottage as Santa Claus said he had a present for him. He then gifted €1,330 to Dermot for Kerry Hospice Foundation.
Then it was the turn of the Gap of Dunloe Poney Men who raised €855.50 for the
cancer charity through a recent raffle. Sean Coffey of Kate Kearney's Cottage made the presentation on behalf of the Poney Men.
"Kate Kearney's did Santa for three Saturdays, the whole staff were involved," Dermot told the Killarney Advertiser. "There was no charge and people made donations. There was facepainting and the children went away happy. The Poney Men did a raffle and had three prizes. We are delighted with the amounts raised."
On Monday, Fossa National School pupils brought their voices together for their Christmas carol singing session with local musicians Padraig Buckley, Maria Falvey, teacher Marie McSweeney and Kirill Healy in Fossa Community Centre. And this year they were joined by Ukraine children who learned some
tunes and excitedly sang along.
In town on Tuesday students from St Brendan's College gathered at Market Cross creating a lovely atmosphere for those out Christmas shopping.
The group raised €2,350 for St Vincent de Paul which was the largest amount since the event was started by Tim Gleeson and Paul Barden 21 years ago.
Christmas carols really do help ramp up the festive vibe and that's exactly what local schools did this week.
Saturday was a night to remember not only for little ones who got to meet Santa but it was also extra special for Killarney based Ukrainians.
Up to 20 women and their children who have been living in Killarney since March due to the war in their country became part of the Christmas celebration on the streets of Killarney as they took part in the Christmas Parade for the first time. They dressed in colourful floral wreaths and traditional Ukrainian national headscarves as they marched alongside the spectacular floats. They had stars in their hands - a traditional symbol of Christmas in Ukraine.
"I want Ukrainian children and women abroad to be seen just like that, happy and beautiful!" Natalya Eysmont, the organiser of the Ukrainian part of the Christmas parade, said.
"I want to convey that Ukrainian women can contribute to the development of Ireland. Because we are a people who are not used to sitting in the dark and being aloof from the development of the world as a whole. In 2022, we received so much help from Ireland and Irish people. We are grateful to each and every one of you!”
By participating in the parade, Ukrainians
wanted to express their gratitude to the locals for their warm welcome and help, as well as to share the common Christmas celebration, she added.
"After all, it is a special holiday for both the Irish and the Ukrainians."
There was a sense of celebration and gratitude in the air among Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra staff recently to mark the retirements of four teachers.
Margaret Dennehy, Carmel O'Keeffe, Mary Woods and Mary O'Connor attended the celebratory meal and evening with their husbands along with a huge number of staff members, past and present.
The event which was held in the Great Southern Killarney gave teaching colleagues and friends the opportunity to share stories and memories of the retirees and wish them well as they move onto the next phase of their lives away from the classroom.
All four former teachers had initially started in St Mary’s Secondary School in Rathmore before joining Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra when the amalgamation occurred in 1998.
Margaret Dennehy, who taught Music and English had spent her entire career in Rathmore and special mention was made of her musical contribution to all school events over the years. Carmel O'Keeffe taught French and Irish for many years and instilled a passion and
grá for languages in all of her students.
Mary O'Connor was a key figure of the Science Department where she taught Junior Cycle Science and Biology as well as providing staff and students with lots of delicious home-baking over the years.
Mary Woods, an enthusiastic Home Economics teacher for many years, was a driving force behind the success of the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) in the school with a particular passion for developing an en-
trepreneurial spirit and leadership skills in her students.
“While their presence is missed in SPSL, we wish each of our colleagues health and happiness in their retirement,” Princial, Denis Kerins, said.

Kerry Mental Health Association has released three videos to promote mental well-being through the art of creating floral decorations at home.
The charity has teamed-up with Traleebased Michelle McElligott who creates stunning floral arrangements as a hobby, has given her time to demonstrate, on video, how to make floral arrangements at home, school or in community and mental health day centres.
“There are simple things we can do as part of our daily life to protect our mental health," General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association, John Drummey, said.
with viewers who will enjoy recreating her arrangements.”
In episode one, Michelle shows how to make a beautiful wreath/garland for the front door, the second is a novel Christmas cracker and the third is a table candle decoration.

Transition Year and LCA students at St Brigid's had everything from hot chocolates to waffles, Christmas cakes, cookies and crepes - the culinary options did not disappoint.
Products on offer included various items of jewellery, personalised tote bags and coffee mugs, scented candles, anxiety rings, handmade Christmas cards, journals of jokes and Spotify key rings. There were also some interesting services on offer including hair wrapping and a unique photo booth service.
Stephen Power from Foróige visited and was highly impressed with the innovation, work ethic and teamwork skills demonstrated by all of the students.
Superstar footballer David Clifford paid a visit and was presented with his own Fossa branded tote bag in exchange for a photo opportunity with the entrepreneurs. ‘Relief Rings’ pitched David with the idea of having his own anxiety ring in pressure situations such as when he has to take a crucial penalty kick. On this occasion however, David noted that he had his own personal strategies for those moments.
Santa Claus even made a short pitstop on his way to the North Pole and all stu-
dents told him that they had been well behaved this year with no school incident report forms!
Students will receive €15 each for their efforts as part of the Foróige Youth Entrepreneurship Programme. Separately, each business will donate 10% of their profits to the Lions Club and students should be very proud of their efforts.

The grand total was revealed at a cheque presentation on December 16 which saw cyclists, supporters and DSI Munster branches come together to celebrate the achievements of this year’s Tour. In total, the tour raised a staggering €445,000, with some cyclists raising funds for other charities near and dear to their hearts.
Celebrating 22 years since its inception, the popular Tour de Munster charity cycle has now raised over €4.6 million. This is the 13th successive year that DSI has been the main beneficiary of the charity cycle, with the Tour raising €4 million alone for Down Syndrome Ireland’s Munster branches.
The funds raised will continue to make a tremendous difference to the lives of people with Down Syndrome in Munster, as well as their friends and families by providing vital services and facilities in each county which they so heavily rely on.
Led by cycling legend Sean Kelly and Olympic rower Gary O’Donovan, more than one hundred amateur cyclists took part in the event. They travelled more
than 600 kilometres over the course of four days, visiting some of Munster's most famous towns and villages in an endeavour to raise vital funds for the Down Syndrome Ireland branches throughout Munster.
“On behalf of Down Syndrome Kerry members and their families I want to express my deepest gratitude to the cyclists, back-up crew, Paul Sheridan and everyone who in any way supported this year’s Tour de Munster and for their huge personal and financial efforts in support of our Kerry branch members and those of Clare, Tipperary, Limerick, Waterford and Cork," Enda O’Brien, Chairperson of Down Syndrome Kerry, said.
"The funds generated for Kerry this year will be directed to our Speech & Language Service which is vital for our members. Our branch does not receive any HSE or other Government funding to allay the cost of this service (€120,000 + per annum). Clearly, we are greatly indebted to those who go to such great lengths every year to participate, fundraise and support the Tour.”
Learning all about a chronic illness was the focus of a recent school activity.
To mark Diabetes Awareness Month Kilcummin NS organised its own Diabetes Awareness Week.
The school rounded off the day by hosting their own Blue Day and the children took part in the Blue Balloon Challenge doing various daily activities including singing, dancing, squatting and writing among other activities to show what life is like trying to balance everyday activities with a chronic illness such as diabetes.
The children also wore blue in solidarity with those suffering with diabetes and raised a total of €241 for Diabetes Ireland.
"Our Student Council also organised a used battery 'drive-by' outside the school during the week to collect used batteries that will be recycled in aid of Barretstown," Patrick Mannix, from Kilcummin NS, said.
"Every battery recycled will help to Power Positivity by funding the charity's energy costs over the next three years.
Barretstown is a specially-designed camp in Co Kildare that provides Therapeutic Recreation programmes for children with serious and often life-threatening illnesses and their families."

Thousands - young and old - lined the streets while volunteers were busy behind the scenes as the Disney-style parade dazzled the town.
Children cheered as Disney characters, amazing snow horses, dancers, perform-
ers and famous US characters showed off their magic and, of course, Santa Claus himself, was on his stunning reindeer sleigh.
The explosion of colour made it a stunning scene as children spotted Santa Claus for one last time before he hurried back to his North Pole workshop to finish up the last of his special deliveries with his elves.
Remember kids, go to bed early on Christmas Eve!

Lifelong soccer stalwart and sports reporter Pádraig Harnett, who passed away in October following a brief illness, has been honoured posthumously by the club to which he devoted much of his life.
Pádraig was named 'Club Person of the Year' by Kerry soccer kingpins Killarney Celtic FC at their annual awards ceremony to a mark outstanding contributions and achievements.
Pádraig served in several positions with the club and he always worked tirelessly and passionately for Celtic and Kerry soccer at many levels.
When Pádraig passed away last Octo-
ber, his coffin was draped in the green and white flag of Celtic and club officials, members and players staged a very moving guard of honour as the cortege wound its way through the streets of Killarney.
At a reception in the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Friday night, the award was accepted by Pádraig’s wife, Maura and also in attendance were his stepson Seán Daly, his brother Brendan, sister-in-law
The awards were presented by club Chairman Tim Jones and Vice Chairman Paul Sherry.
Another recipient on the night was former senior manager Brian Spillane who received an 'Outstanding Achievement' award for his record-breaking exploits on the sidelines.
During his tenure, Celtic won an unprecedented four Premier League and cup doubles in a row as well as the coveted Munster League of Champions trophy. A key member of that all-conquering
Celtic squad was the outstanding Gary Keane who won every honour in the domestic game and is considered a Celtic legend who has been part of the club since he was a schoolboy.
Gary, who recently hung up his boots, was also presented with an outstanding achievement award as was club mentor Diarmuid Daly who was the kitman for the four-in-a-row squad and managed teams at senior B, youth and Under 17 level.

With stalls ranging from skin care to baubles, cosmetics to candles, jewellery to gin, the fair had it all.
Exhibitors filled every available space in the Fermoy Suite at the Muckross Road hotel, to set up a diverse array of products but most of all products that were locally produced and made. There
was even mulled wine and mince pies setting the scene for all shoppers on arrival to ensure a truly cosy and festive atmosphere.
The fair itself, which took place on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, was a hit, with queues forming even before the doors were opened and when they did
the hotel was buzzing with activity. There was a constant and steady flow of people coming to do their festive shopping. People came out in large numbers, looking for those unique and quirky gifts. It was amazing to see such wonderful support for local businesses and producers.
Tom Randles owner of Randles Hotel, hailed the weekend a great success. "The fair allowed shoppers the opportunity to browse some wonderful
stalls all under one roof in a warm and welcoming space. It had something for everyone, whether you were looking to kick start your Christmas shopping or finish it, if you are one of the ultra-organised!"
Tom wishes to thank all the small local independent businesses that supported their first time fair, many of whom are already planning to return for the Randles 2023 instalment.
At this stage of the year Leaving Cert students tend to be exhausted.
It has been very busy since September so the Christmas holidays will bring a much needed break from school and the opportunity to rest and recharge the batteries. You are heading into a very busy term after Christmas, with the ‘mocks’ starting in most schools by the end of January. You don’t need to have final decisions about exactly what pathway you want to take after school before going back in January. That said, Christmas is the ideal time to look at all the options you are considering carefully because you have the time! Being off school means that you will have the head space needed to research your options carefully which will ease the pressure and stress when you go back in January and give you a clearer focus. Remember you will still have lots of time to review your options and change your mind later, but for now focus on exploring all the different options open to you.
Take some time to relax and enjoy the festivities.
Choose 4/5 days to catch up on project work and revision. Write down the targets you want to achieve in each subject in the mocks and in the Leaving Cert exams. Make a list of a couple of topics to complete or revise in each subject. Research the career areas that interest you and explore the various pathways into such areas. These include CAO courses, Post Leaving Cert (PLC) courses in Colleges of Further Education, traineeships, apprenticeships, supported training programmes and study abroad options.
Register for CAO if you haven’t already done so and make a list of the courses you are interested in right now. Take particular note of ‘Restricted’ courses. Look carefully at the detail of the courses you are considering, If you are applying for colleges in the UK, finalise your UCAS application.
You really need to dig deep to ensure you are making choices that suit you. The information you need will be available on the specific college/training programme website but if you have particular questions you will find the contact details of course directors in the course information so email your query to them.
Think about the following: Will I have the entry requirements?
Do I like the majority of the course content? Dig deep into the module content for each year of the course.
How will I be assessed? Check out the

proportion of continuous assessment and how that is done – practicals, projects, presentations, reports, essays and so on.
Does the course have work placement? For how long?
Are there opportunities to study abroad as part of the course?
What are the career pathways open to me when I finish the course?
Will I need to go on to postgraduate study or will I be able to go directly into the workplace?
Am I happy with the location of the course? If you haven’t attended an Open Day in the College, check if they have a Spring Open Day coming up or take a virtual college tour on their website.

Q: I’ve recently had trouble hearing, how can I get my hearing checked?
A: If you’ve noticed a problem with your own hearing, talk to your GP. Your GP may refer you to the HSE Community Audiology Service or an ear, nose and throat (ENT) service at a hospital. There is no charge to attend a public hospital outpatient clinic if you are referred there, including for people without a medical card.
The audiologist (a hearing specialist) or ENT specialist will examine your ear. They may test your hearing in different ways.
If the audiologist or ENT specialist decides you need a hearing test you can get a free hearing test if you have a medical card or are aged under 18.
Q: What if I need a hearing aid, is this free?
A: You can get a free hearing aid from the HSE audiology or hearing service if you:
• Have a medical card
• Are aged under 18; Children under 18 get free hearing tests and hearing aids
• Have a Health Amendment Act (HAA) Card; The HAA card is for people who contracted Hepatitis C from contaminated blood or blood products within Ireland
If you cannot get a free hearing aid, the Treatment Benefit Scheme can help with the costs of buying one. You need to have enough PRSI contributions to qualify.
If you qualify for Treatment Benefit, the Department of Social Protection (DSP) pays the full cost of a hearing aid up to a maximum of €500 (€1,000 for a pair) once every four years. It also pays the full cost of repairs to aids, up to a maximum of €100, once every four years. The hearing aid may be provided by suppliers who have a contract with the DSP. Under certain conditions, you may be able to claim tax relief on the cost of purchasing a hearing aid. If you have private health insurance, your policy may cover all or some of the cost of buying a hearing aid. Check your policy for details.
Q: What types of hearing aids does the HSE audiology service offer?
A: The type of hearing aids offered by the HSE are:
• Digital
• Multi-channel (they can switch between different pitches of sound)
• Multi-programme (you can programme them for different listening conditions or sound environments)
• ‘Behind the ear’ type
Q: Can I get my hearing aid serviced or repaired free of charge?
A: If you have a hearing aid from the HSE, you can post it to the HSE’s National Hearing Aid Repair Centre (NHARC) or you can use the walk-in service without an appointment. It is based in Dublin. The NHARC offers advice on:
• How to use your hearing aid
• Any issues you might have with the hearing aid
If you are posting your hearing aid to the National Hearing Aid Repair Centre (NHARC), you should use a padded envelope and send it by registered post to ensure safe delivery. You should also include a piece of paper with your name, address, phone number and client reference number and a brief description of the problem you are having with your hearing aid. It can take up to five working days for your hearing aid to reach them.
The address is as follows:
• HSE’s National Hearing Aid Repair Centre (NHARC),
• Audiology Services (Dublin North City and County)
• Grangegorman Primary Care Centre,
• Upper Grangegorman Road,
• Grangegorman,
• Dublin 7

Our eyes and eyebrows are natural beauty features that help to frame our face to achieve the famous no make-up look.
A good eyebrow shape and tint really helps to give this look so you won't have to try to draw or fill in the brows. This is a popular treatment with both men and women. The lash lift can give you a natural boost, by lifting, conditioning, curling up which helps to open the eye giving it a brighter, more open look. Also, by tinting with the lash lift you are darkening; this helps the lashes look fuller and you won't need to wear mascara. Your eye lashes will look very fluttery. You would even think you were wearing extensions without the damage to the natural lashes and its suitable for all ages. Even the shortest of lashes will be lifted.
The eyes and hands are some of the most important places for anti-ageing. With all the hand sanitising, it's important to use hand cream more often. I always recommend applying just before bed so it can have time to really get to work on hydrating the hands. It's clear from all my years of anti-ageing skincare for the face that hyaluronic acid is a key ingredient for hydration and anti-ageing. If you feel you need a boost for the hands, it's a great idea to try a warm paraffin hand manicure which is a game changer for the hydration of the hands.
SPF is essential to reduce and prevent further age spots. Use an eye cream morning and night, followed by an eye mask once a week and an eye facial once a month. Eye facials can be added into your regular facial for an extra lift. Eyes for me are an area that needs most work as they don't have any sebaceous glands of their own unlike the rest of the body. I often hear people saying they are allergic to eye cream, mostly it's applied wrong or into the eye. Imagine you were looking at a skull - the bone of the eye socket is far back from the actual eye itself. You apply the eye cream on the bone area, just under the eyebrow and well under the eye using the ring finger as not to drag the skin as it's super delicate. Use light circular motion from the inner corner under the eyebrow out to the temple lifting the brow as you go. It will drop with time and gravity, so it's our job to encourage it to stay in place by exercising the muscle.

Cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, is encouraging those supporting a loved one with cancer to avail of their free, online course.
Due to begin in January, it has been described by previous participants as ‘absolutely invaluable’.
Names are now being taken for the third 'Building Better Caregivers' course, which course facilitator, Siobhan MacSweeney, explains will offer valuable tools and practical advice to those supporting a loved one through cancer treatment.
“Family caregiver is not a job anyone willingly applies for, but when illness comes into the home, many within our community step up and become automatic caregivers and supporters,” she said. “When dealing with illness within a family, the caregiver’s journey can be easily overlooked - often until someone finds themselves drained, isolated and overwhelmed. So this programme focuses on reducing the carer’s stress, through practical skills and tools and staying healthy.”
Recovery Haven Kerry is the first support centre of its kind in Ireland to run this free programme in a cancer setting and has received great feedback from previous participants, Siobhan explained.
“The common theme among all those
who took part in last year’s programme was the sense of togetherness and shared experiences, and knowing they are not in this alone,” Siobhan explained. “One lady described the programme as ‘absolutely invaluable’ and said she would happily do it all again, while another told us that the best part about the course was the contact with people who are doing or going through the same thing – as well as learning skills and tips to help support themselves, not just the person they are caring for.”
The upcoming course – which is also part of a research project with Munster Technological University - is given over two and half hours, one day a week, for six weeks and will cover topics such as communication skills; staying well and getting a good night’s sleep; tools for managing fatigue; dealing with challenging emotions and behaviour, getting help and action planning.
The new programme will commence with an introductory session on Tuesday, January 17 after which it will run weekly, via Zoom from 10.30am to 1pm.
Those interested in taking part can now register by phoning Recovery Haven Kerry on 066 7192122 or emailing siobhan@ recoveryhavenkerry.com.
Three of Kerry’s best known players have recently returned from a historic trip to Africa, where they kickstarted a bid to plant more than a million trees to combat climate change.
Kerry players Tomas O Se, Stefan Okunbur, and Ciara Murphy, joined 50 leading GAA stars to compete in the first ever ‘Plant the Planet Games’ in Nairobi, Kenya.
The visit also saw them plant the first thousand trees in a GPA-backed tree planting effort to tackle climate change in Africa.
Each of the participating players, who included inter-county hurlers, footballers and camogie players from 23 different counties, were tasked with raising €10,000 in sponsorship to support the effort. The group’s collective total has already topped half a million Euro, with funds still coming in.
The initiative was organised by Galway dual player Alan Kerins 'Warriors for Humanity' in conjunction with development charity Self Help Africa, and is also being supported by Kenyan Olympic medalist and world record holding runner, David Rudisha.
“I have been blown away by the amazing work Self Help Africa do on the ground. We have been fortunate to visit schools, farms, hospitals and a tree nursery on our quest to plant one million trees. The resilience of the communities we have been working with is incredible. Their positivity and drive for progress with massive adversity has been an education to us all,” Ciara Murphy said.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Santa will leave the North Pole and get ready to make his epic journey across the globe and into your home to deliver presents.
His elves have packed up the sleigh and his reindeer Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder, Blitzen and Rudolph, are ready - to visit mil-
lions of homes in just a few short hours while everyone is asleep.
And if you want to know where in the world he is at tomorrow before you head to bed then it's worth checking his Santa tracker online.
Families can use NASA’s North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) by searching www.noradsan-
ta.org to watch his sleigh live. Santa usually starts in the Pacific Ocean at the International Date Line and travels west. He visits the South Pacific first, then New Zealand and Australia. Then after that it's on to Japan, Asia, across to Africa, then Western Europe, Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Central and South America.
British police were left mortified after "rescuing" a woman - only to find out that she was a dummy!
The incident happened at a London art gallery - where an art installation called 'Kristina' had a "woman" - made of packing tape and foam filler - slumped unconscious over a table in the gallery window.
London's Metropolitan Police were responding to a call about a "person in distress" at the gallery.
The "woman" was wearing a yellow hoody and trainers and her face was slumped forward in a bowl of soup with her face concealed by her hair.
"Officers forced entry to the address, where they uncovered that the person was in fact a mannequin," a police spokesperson said.
The work was commissioned by Banksy's former agent Steve Lazarides, and the dealer behind Laz Emporium.
"Hannah, who was working in the gallery that day, had just locked up and gone upstairs to make a cup of tea," Mr Lazarides said.
"She came down to find the door off its hinges and two confused police officers!"
The realistic sculpture was made by Mark Jenkins an American artist and is based on Mr Lazarides' sister.
Just like Santa - it's the busiest time of the year for Brussels sprouts man Paudie Hanifan.
The Bord Bia approved farmer - who has been supplying Brussels sprouts to SuperValu for over a decade now - is busy at his Ballygarron Farm in the Spa.
SuperValu expects to sell seven million Brussels sprouts this festive season as demand is strong for the green vegetable.
SuperValu supports a massive 1,800 Irish suppliers like Paudie and his fam-
ily. This helps to sustain 30,000 jobs in the Irish economy.
Many Irish people consider Brussels sprouts a staple of Christmas dinner, and that is proven in the volumes being sold by SuperValu.
Last December, SuperValu sold about 250,000 nets of Brussels sprouts, with approximately 28 Brussels sprouts in each net. The retailer, which prides itself on selling local and Irish produce, expects to sell the same volumes again this year. That’s 1.3 Brussels sprouts for every person in the country!
Leo Varadkar has this week taken over from Micheál Martin as Taoiseach as a result of a historic pact made between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil following the 2020 election.
Varadkar announced his new cabinet on Saturday.
Martin is the country’s new Tánaiste and will also be the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Green Party leader Eamon Ryan remains third in command and continues as the
Minister for Department of Environment, Climate, Communications and Transport.
Outgoing foreign minister Simon Coveney has moved to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment.

A two-year-old Ugandan boy has escaped with his life after a hippo tried to swallow him whole.
However, within seconds the animal spat the boy, named Iga Paul, back out again. The attack occurred in Lake Edward when the animal strayed around 800 metres from the lake.
Iga had been playing in his hometown of Katwe-Kabaro when the incident happened, according to the Ugandan Police Force.
The hippo grabbed the boy by the head and tried to eat him whole but he was spat out very fast as an onlooker reacted very quickly.
The observer, Chrispas Bagonza, threw stones at the hippo.
The child was then rushed to hospital where he received a rabies vaccine and was later discharged.
Lake Edward in Katwe-Kabaro is one of the smaller African Great Lakes. It's located within the Queen Elizabeth National Park, where there are hippos, lions, elephants and buffaloes.
Native to Africa, hippos are herbivores and aren't known to attack people.
Police spokesperson Enanga Fred called on the public to alert park rangers and urged caution when in the park if they
see animals wandering into any residential areas.
He said that it is the first time a hippo from that lake has hurt a young child. "Although the hippo was scared back into the lake, all residents near animal sanctuaries and habitats should know that wild animals are very dangerous," he said.
"Instinctually, wild animals see humans as a threat and any interaction can cause them to act strangely or aggressively."
In 2018, a Chinese tourist was attacked and killed by a hippo while taking pictures on the edge of Lake Naivasha in Kenya’s Rift Valley, just hours after a local fisherman was mauled to death in the same area.
takes over from Griffin as chief whip. Michael McGrath is the new Minister for Finance as Paschal Donohoe moves to the Department of Public Expenditure and National Development Delivery and Reform.
Some positions did not change in the reshuffle with Catherine Martin staying in the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Darragh O'Brien retains the Housing, Local Gov-
ernment and Heritage portfolio Heather Humphreys stays Social Protection, Rural and Community Development.
Likewise, Stephen Donnelly will continue as Health Minister while Charlie McConalogue retains his position in the Department Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Roderic O'Gorman stays at the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth.
Simon Harris will temporarily take on the Justice role as well as the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science as the government awaits the return of Helen McEntee who is on maternity leave.
Christmas is a time for tradition and while many of our Irish methods of celebrating the festive season are considered normal to us, they may be seen as unusual in other parts of the world.
The St Stephen’s Day tradition of dressing up and going in search of a wren is uniquely Irish and one that would take a lot explaining to non-Irish folk.
Ireland is now home to thousands of Ukrainian refugees fleeing war and they are celebrating Christmas away from home for the first time.
They might think that our Wren Day tradition is a bit off the wall but they have
one unusual tradition of their own. Spiders' webs are also considered to be lucky in Ukrainian culture.
Instead of tinsel and stars, to decorate their trees at this time of year, “Ukrainians use decorations that mimic the natural formation of spiders' webs shimmering with dew,” according to holidaysextra.com.
“The tradition goes back to a folktale about a poor widow who could not afford to decorate a tree for her children.
Legend has it that spiders in the house took pity on the family, and spun beautiful webs all over the tree, which the children awoke to find on Christmas morning.”

The pack cost €15 on the weekend of the

“Only a small number of 2022 programmes have been returned from local shops,” Clerk of the Course, Anthony O’Connor, said.
“We would like to thank you again for your kind support.”

Now Christmas is here again, our Lord’s birthday. But Christmas is not the same since you passed away.
You got up early on Christmas day and set out your plan for the day. To make sure all was perfect in every way.
Mother’s and wives work hard on Christmas day. But no one can compete with them, to cook dinner on that special day.
Julianne would say “Be on your way”. This is 34 years in a row that we are going to Rossbeigh. We will walk the beautiful beach and golden sands. To make sure we were very hungry after we got back from the strand. She would tell us the time to be back, and not to be late!
Then she would say “sit down as she carved the dinner and filled our plate”.
Julianne would sit down last, as mother’s and wives always do. And made sure everyone was happy and then she would eat too.
Then after the dinner, she would say “I hope everything is fine”. We would say “only you could do it Mam, it was truly devine”.
After, we would say “Sit down have a cigarette and a glass of wine”. You are on your feet all morning, now rest and take your time.
Beef with peas you would steep overnight. And bacon and cabbage, to make sure Christmas dinner was right.
Potatoes, stuffing, croquettes, roast potatoes, and gravy on the day. Then on St. Stephens day, no need to cook, you could eat away. We would all give a hand doing the wash-up. The plates, knives, forks, dishes, spoons, glasses, and cups.
Julianne, you never wanted praise or any fuss. You gave your life looking after all of us. We will forget many things in our lifetime, that is true. As a wife and mother, we will never forget you.
Happy Christmas Love your husband Donie and Family xxxx

I want to know what crossed your mind Unspoken words you’ve left behind Undone things we’ll never do No sharing thoughts you never knew.
Gone but never forgotten by your brothers Pat, Billy and Johnny, sister Sheilagh and our families.
Anniversary mass is on Tuesday 27th December at 6.15pm in St. Mary’s Cathedral.
In loving memory of Dan Joe Moynihan Dunrine, Tralee Road, Killarney
Who passed away on 3rd January 2022. R.I.P.
The family of the late Dan Joe Moynihan, wife Sheila, Sons Peter and Colm and daughter Lisa, grand daughters Saoirse and Shauna, wishes to acknowledge the many expressions of sympathy and gestures of kindness shown to us following our sad loss.
We offer our heartfelt thanks for the many friends, neighbours and well wishers who visited our home, attended the funeral and burial, and who provided emotional and practical support for us at this difficult time. For those who telephoned, travelled long distances, sent floral tributes, cards and messages of condolences, it meant so much to us.
A special word of thanks to his consultant Dr. Mary Buckley, management, all the nurses and staff in the Dinish Ward at UHK. There kindness and repect shown at all times will never be forgotten. To Dr. Mags Clifford in Pallative Care and her team of doctors, thank ye all so much for all the help and support until the bitter end. A special thank you to his own Dr. Laura Malone and staff.
Also, Owen in Reen’s pharmacy for his guidance. We wish to thank the ambulance service, the public health nurses and his care assistants Billy, Eileen and Marie.
Our sincere thanks to his home pallative nurse Noreen Spillane who left no stone unturned, you will never be forgotten. All these great people took care of Dan Joe and gave us the support to have him at home.
We would like to thank Fr. Niall Howard, Fr. Eamon O’Driscoll, Fr. Denis O’Mahony, Canon Tom Looney and all who made his requiem mass so special. A special thank you to Laura and Sean for the music. His devotion to the Divine Mercy Jesus, I trust in thee. His faithfulness of the Rosary is the Legion of Mary.
We wish to thank his dear friend Fr. Eamon O’Driscoll of the Franciscan Friary, for his close bond with Dad during his illness and his support to us as a family after his death. Prayer had a massive positive impact on his life, the church was his second home where he became part of a special group of friends.
Finally, thank you to Mary and Mike O’Shea of O’Shea’s Funeral Home who took care of every detail with respect and professionalism. As it is not possible to thank everyone, please take this acknowledgement as a token of our appreciation.
Don’t think of him as gone away His journey just begun Life holds so many faces This earth is only one
Just think of him as resting From the sorrows and the tears In a place of warmth and comfort Where there are no days and years
Think how he must be wishing That we could know today How nothing but our sadness Can really pass away
And think of him as living In the hearts of those he touched For nothing loved is ever lost And he was loved so much.
May his gentle holy honest soul shine bright in heaven till we meet again.
Dan Joe’s First anniversary mass is on Tuesday 3rd January 2023 at 9.30am in the Church of the Ressurection, Killarney.

Timothy’s First anniversary mass is on Friday 23rd December at 7.30pm in Barraduff Church.
Tralee man Billy Dennehy has been officially unveiled as the first ever manager of Kerry FC.
Dennehy had previously been in charge of the Kerry U19s and he was initially listed as the fledgling club’s Director of Football, but his League of Ireland experience as a player makes him an obvious candidate for the senior management role. It is expected that a number of players from this year’s U19 team will graduate alongside their manager to the newly assembled Kerry senior squad.
After his appointment was made public on Monday morning, the former Sunderland, Shamrock Rovers and Cork City footballer wasted no time in announcing his first two signings. Ex-Killarney Celtic and Treaty United midfielder Matt Keane and Seán McGrath – the ex-Park player who lined out for Cobh Ramblers in 2021 and 2022 –were presented to the media on Monday evening.
Killarney Advertiser readers may recall that Keane gave an interview in these pages earlier this year in which he said Kerry needed a League of Ireland team and that he hoped it would happen “sooner rather than later”. This was several months before Kerry FC announced that they were applying for a licence. Now, the Killarney man has got his wish.
“I am over the moon to sign for Kerry FC and to be able to play First Division football at home is something I have dreamed about for a long time,” Keane said. “I have been following the project very closely and when I got the call from Billy, it really was a no-brainer.”
Keane revealed that it took Dennehy “about 30 seconds” to convince him to sign.
“It’s a proud moment. Wearing the Kerry jersey in any code is a great honour.
Every week you’re going out and you’re representing your family and your friends and the people of Kerry.
“I’m living in Killarney and working in Tralee so it all makes sense to come home.”
For his part, Dennehy said he was “delighted” to welcome Keane and McGrath on board.
“I couldn’t have asked for two nicer players to announce as my first signings as manager of Kerry FC. These are two players who are from the area and who carry valuable experience at this level.
To have their signatures secured for the upcoming season is a huge boost to everyone at Kerry FC. Time now for the hard work to begin.”
Kerry’s debut campaign will get up and running with a home game against Cobh Ramblers on February 17. Works are ongoing at Mounthawk Park before the big kick-off. New seats have arrived for the Main Stand and are expected to be in place before the New Year.
The club say that season ticket sales to date have been “strong”, despite shipping initial criticism over their pricing strategy.
HOMECOMING: Former Celtic player Matt Keane has signed for Kerry FC. MANAGER: Billy Dennehy has been confirmed as the Kerry FC manager for the club's maiden voyage at League of Ireland level. | By Adam MoynihanJack Ferguson’s remarkable haul of eight three-pointers fired the Scotts Lakers to a commanding 25-point victory over the SETU Waterford Vikings in Killarney on Saturday.
The American import was automatic from beyond the arc, racking up 46 points in total to put the visiting Vikings to the sword.
"We are figuring out how to play like a team and I think we can make a big push for the playoffs,” Ferguson told club PRO Enda Walshe. “For me the league is a bit different to what I'm used to but I'm adjusting all the time. Killarney is a great place but my favourite part is the community and its people. That goes far beyond basketball.”
Encouragingly from the Lakers’ point of view, the finishing five were all graduates of the club academy. Senan O’Leary, Oisín Spring, Eoin Carroll, Jamie O’Sullivan and Jack O’Sullivan were all at the wheel when the final buzzer went. There was a good spread of scorers amongst the rest of the squad. Aron Walker netted 13, Jack O’Sullivan had 11,
Rui Saraiva and Marko Bencic both had 9, Jamie O’Sullivan had 7, and Senan O’Leary and Paul Clarke both had 6. For the Vikings Daniel Sheehan top-scored with 18 points.
The Lakers travel to Cork on Friday, December 30 to play Fr Mathews and they will be keen to avenge the home defeat the rebel side inflicted on them at the end of October.
With two home games in January they will be looking to start a run which would see them get into contention for the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the St Paul’s women’s team also had a fine victory on Saturday as they beat the previously undefeated Portlaoise Panthers 74-59. The cornerstone of the home side’s win was their superb defence as they held the Panthers to a miserly total. The home team held sway at all times in the contest, winning all four quarters.
Yuleska Tejeda led the way on 21 points, Rheanne O’Shea chipped in with 17, and Sofia Paska (12), Síofra O’Shea (10), Lynn Jones (8) and Lorraine Scanlon (6) also made important contributions on the scoreboard.
Kevin Cronin - aka the Kingdom Warrior - is set to fight for the vacant BUI Light Heavyweight Celtic title in Belfast in early 2023.
After the unexpected cancellation of a recent fight against Robbie Burke, the undefeated Kerry boxer had been hoping for positive news regarding a major bout and he got it this past week when he learned that he would be taking on Jamie Morrissey for a national title.
The Milltown man said he is “absolutely buzzing” for the event, which will take place at the Europa Hotel on Saturday, February 4.
“It’s the biggest fight of my career,” the
firefighter said. “Since Day 1 these are the nights I dreamed of and I had to pinch myself when I got the offer. County Kerry, let’s go make history!”
Cronin, who currently holds a perfect record of 5-0, will likely be considered the underdog against current Super Middleweight title-holder Morrissey. The Limerick man will be making the step up to Light Heavyweight but he is highly regarded, although he has fewer pro fights under his belt than Cronin (4-0).
The Kerry fighter is hoping to bring plenty of supporters with him to the North on February 4. For more information on tickets, follow @kevincronin_ky on Twitter.
The organisers of a unique fundraiser are inviting Killarney Advertiser readers to join Sam Maguire on a St Stephen’s Day charity trek.
The most famous trophy in Irish sport will be carried to the summit of the Western Pap to help raise much needed funds for the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus and the Brian Lawlor Trust.
Participants will meet at Glenflesk GAA club at 9.30am on December 26 before ascending the 690-metre peak.
“Proper footwear and warm clothing, not to mind a fair level of fitness, will be required for the challenging trek,” one of the organisers, Rory D’Arcy, said. “It is very important for safety and insurance purposes that all participants meet at Glenflesk GAA clubhouse to register at 9.30. Water will also be essential. We also advise all participants to bring along
a good walking stick as it can be a great help.
“All donations are welcome online or on the day for these worthy causes.” To donate online, visit idonate.ie/fundraiser/ samtothesummit.
Members of the Glenflesk and Rathmore clubs, as well as others from the greater East Kerry area, have joined forces to organise the event.
Brian Lawlor is a keen U5 footballer from Rathmore who is currently battling illness.
“Every cent raised will go to support family, friends and neighbours on tougher journeys than our climb,” volunteer Emma Cooper said.
Rathmore man Donal Murphy is another organiser driving the initiative. “These are great causes and we need your support,” he added.

Photo: Piaras Ó Mídheach/Sportsfile.self and Fionn Fitzgerald co-captained Kerry to All-Ireland victory in 2014. The latter was unable to play, recovering from a serious leg injury. Spa just could not get going and everything seemed to go wrong. The best of teams have disappointing days and Spa had such a nightmare. To paraphrase Van the Man, there are days like this in every club’s existence, when nothing goes right for you. Unfortunately for Spa, it was in last Sunday’s final.
O’Carroll. Small in stature but big in heart, he made several runs forward trying to set up scoring chances, but the Crokes’ defence operated as a cohesive unit to snuff out any attacks.
Mike Foley had to go off injured in the 14th minute and was replaced by Dara Moynihan. Still Crokes held the upper hand.
Dr Crokes retained the most sought-after prize in East Kerry at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last when they outplayed and outfoxed their great rivals Spa to win by a whopping 11 points.
It was a win that looked so unlikely in the run-up to the game. Missing no fewer than seven injured starters, Crokes seemed to have it all to do. They surprised all, this writer included, as Spa seemed to have all the aces for ending their famine that goes right back to 1989. Was it over-confidence that duped the raging hot favourites, only to be ambushed by Crokes?
I didn’t expect much from the Kerry players on both teams. They arrived home on Saturday from long-haul flights and less than 24 hours later had to tog out for this final. Understandably, Spa did not start Dara Moynihan, but he entered the fray after 13 minutes when Mike Foley had to retire injured. Micheál Burns wasn’t introduced until very late in the game.
Tony Brosnan arrived home earlier in the week and was able to deliver his usual quota of seven points.
I watched Crokes trainer Luke Quinn manage the pre-match warm-up on their home grounds. A proven hero of the past, laden with medals and titles all the ways to All-Ireland level, Cool Luke was the essence of controlled emotion. He encouraged the young guns as and plámásed the over-30 cohort.
Manager Brian McMahon called the huddle and delivered a telling one-liner. “Now go across the road and do what you do best. One team and no egos. You control this game from the throw-in.”
It was clear that Crokes were up for this final and none more so than Man of the Match Kieran O’Leary. He broke the hearts of a back-pedaling Spa side, spraying defence-splitting accurate foot passes with that well proven ciotóg. It was a reincarnation of the same skill when him-
The dye was cast as early as the third minute when Tony Brosnan made the correct decision to cross the ball into the Spa square and Mikey Casey rose highest of all to beat James Devane. In total, Casey was on the field for just 38 minutes, but ended up as the top Crokes scorer from play with 1-2. He has been a revelation in recent matches.
The old guard of Kieran O’Leary, Daithí Casey, Brian Looney and John Payne was magnificent, leading the charge and ripping Spa apart.
Leary, as he is best known to his teammates, sparkled. Playing well out from the customary number 14 spot, he revelled on the fast kick passes from outfield and sprayed inch perfect balls directly into the arms of those inside.
With 12 minutes gone the scoreboard read 1-5 to 0-0.
The one Spa defender who gave Spa some hope was right wing back Ryan
Evan Cronin tried hard and eventually he scored their first point from a free. Crokes roared back and by half-time they were in complete command, 1-10 to 0-3.
Evan was Spa’s top scorer with 0-5 (0-4 from frees). In total only four Spa players scored, whereas eight Crokes players scored.
Spa were thrown a lifeline in the 33rd minute when David Shaw was sent off after picking up two cards. With Crokes down to 14, this would surely open up the middle for big Spa midfielders Liam Kearney and Ciarán Spillane to fight back. It looked for a while that it might be game on, but it was going to be Crokes’ day.
Spa needed goals and they came close as it took a super, reactionary, one-handed save by Shane Murphy to deny them.
Dara Moynihan did beat his Kerry colleague Murphy with the best shot of the game, a rocket which shook the net, but it was too little, too late.
There was plenty hard tackling as one expects in a championship final and the game ended in a shemozzle in time add-
ed on, resulting in Dr Crokes duo O’Leary and Brosnan getting two straight red cards from referee Pádraig O’Sullivan. The vastly experienced referee, in charge of his fifth O’Donoghue Cup final, has refereed over the past 15 years at all levels up to the U21 All-Ireland final and the Connacht final. He managed quite well for most of the game. Some fans may not have been happy with some of his decisions but the ref must call it as he sees it, with precious little time to reflect before he decides. My sympathies are with referees.
However, in the dying moments a schemozzle developed near the sideline just down form the broadcasting box. The ref has to sort it out and it is not an easy task. Too often the referee does not see the original foul, only the reactions of the victims.
I was perfectly positioned to see what developed after the initial foul. There were over a dozen players from both sides entangled. Fouls were committed, but the perpetrator got off scot-free. How two players could be picked out from the dozen beats incredulity. Brosnan and O’Leary were scapegoated; they could have had plenty company, if the referee was consistent in his decision making. While I have every sympathy for referees trying to sort out such a brouhaha, common sense and fair play should prevail. Not so on this occasion.
Fr Paddy O’Donoghue, himself a star
player with Crokes in the late 50s/early 60s, presented the cup to winning captain Mark O’Shea. It was a special moment for Mark to lift the trophy; his father Seánie and grandfather Murt had done likewise.

Almost there as 2022 draws to an end and the Golden Jubilee of the Killarney Advertiser beckons in 3 months’ time. The Advertiser was the brainchild of the late, great Danny Casey, a man very much before his time. He felt that Killarney needed a local forum for expression. It would be local and free to readers.
He readily admitted that he knew damn all about sport, only what he heard from his great Spa friend Donie O’Leary. Yet he realised and appreciated the value of sport, all sports, for the physical and mental wellbeing of Killarney people.
Covid brought that into a sharp reality. Sport isn’t always what it is cracked up to be, but it is central to the lives of so many people. Killarney people and those in its surrounding areas are blessed to have so many sports clubs, participants, supporters and followers in this Garden of Eden, God’s own country.
It has been my joy and privilege to present this weekly column, just one person’s take on the local sports scene. The analysis, and the opinions in print are always personal, no better or no worse than that of any other sportsperson.

Photo: Paudie Healy.Regular readers might recall that I was torn about following this World Cup. In the end, after weighing up all the rights and wrongs of the whole thing, I decided to avoid it. I’m sure plenty of you will say that it was OTT to actively boycott it; after all, what difference would it make? I suppose it came down to the fact that it made a difference to me personally. Like a lot of people I have found myself growing more and more disillusioned with the greed that has engulfed professional soccer. This Qatar World Cup, and the corruption, lies, disregard for human life, racism and homophobia it was built on, was a bridge too far for me. So I ended up not watching any of the games. I saw one of Iran’s goals against England on Twitter by accident but that was it. I was still keeping up with what was happening, though, and when it
became apparent that Lionel Messi was on track to finally win football’s biggest prize, my stance became less comfortable. If Messi, one of my favourite players, managed to do it and I didn’t get to see it, part of me would be sickened.
As it turned out, the East Kerry Board made my mind up for me. Scheduling the O’Donoghue Cup final for Sunday at 2pm meant that I was bound to miss the first half of Argentina-France anyway. As I left the Fitzgerald Stadium, I checked the score in the soccer. Argentina 2-0 France. Messi is going to do it. Great, I thought. That’s that. No need to watch it now. Myself and the young fella strolled home.
After that I was due to meet the lads in the Speak. One more check of the score. 79 minutes gone. Still 2-0. I got ready
and walked out the door. It will be over by the time I get there, I thought to myself, and the lads won’t be able to wind me up about watching the World Cup when I said I wasn’t going to. Imagine my surprise when I landed into the back of the Speak and the whole place was still glued to the screen. Argentina 2-2 France. ET. Mbappé scored twice in the last 10 minutes. Madness. I suppose I could have asked Gav Speak to change the channel, or I could have stood outside in the rain for half an hour, but I didn’t. Thankfully the boys had forgotten that I said I wasn’t going to watch it. And anyway they were too engrossed in the “Best Final of All Time” to care. The whole bar was cheering for Messi and Argentina. A friend had money on France from Day 1 but even he wanted Argentina to do it. If that doesn’t sum up
people’s respect for Messi I don’t know what does: an Irish fella drinking pints in Killarney who would rather lose €200 than see Messi defeated.
The first goal I witnessed at the 2022 World Cup was Messi’s in extra time. Then came the drama of Mbappé’s equaliser and Emi Martinez’s incredible save at the death, and then, of course, the penalty shootout. When Montiel stroked home the winner, the mood in this small Irish bar on High Street was joyous. “Delighted for him” was the refrain that echoed around the tavern. The Boy from Rosario but last Sunday you’d swear he was from the Rock Road. One of our own.
Whatever about the trophy lift, which was shrouded in controversy (if you’ll pardon the pun), seeing Messi kiss the globe atop the World Cup as he collected his Player of the Tournament award brought a broad smile to my face.
So, in the end, I was happy to catch the conclusion of the Qatar World Cup. I got to see a beautiful moment that will live long in the memory.
Sadly (and I am genuinely sorry to end this piece on a sour note), the off-pitch legacy of this tournament will be anything but beautiful. I hope that side of the story lives long in the memory too.

LADIES FOOTBALL, A YEAR IN REVIEW: In 2022 the Club fielded six teams in all
grades namely U12, U14 (where we had two teams) U16, U18 and Senior level. Our 12s entered three competitions and were winners of the South Kerry B League. They also got to the County League Division 3 C Final and the East Kerry Division 2 final. With a strong number going into 2023 it is envisaged that there will be two teams competing at this level. This group was managed by Mairead O’Donoghue, Mike O’Sullivan, Ian Bowler, Patricia Quigley and Shelly Browne. Our two U14 teams were looked after by Ted Healy, Fergal Moynihan, Noelle O’Toole, Donal O’Leary, Shane McSweeney and Sharon O'Shea. They had a particularly busy year, winning the Non-County Player County League Division 2 and finishing runners up in the Division 3 County player equivalent with the Green team. They also made the East Kerry Division 2 final. The White team which consisted of the younger members of the group predominantly saw plenty of action all year and also entered in three competitions. The U16 year is still ongoing with Jason Stack, Enda Murphy and Sharon O’Grady awaiting a fixture for an East Kerry derby final against Dr Crokes. They also qualified for the Division 3 County League final finishing the competition as runners up. The Minors were denied two glimpses of silverware by an excellent MKL Gaels side who got the better of them in both the County League and East Kerry finals. John Doona, Shaun O’Connor, Jason Stack and Donal Hegarty put great time into a group where the majority of the panel are underage again in 2023.

EAST KERRY FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL: Dr Crokes 1-18 Spa 1-7. We had a comprehensive win over Spa on Sunday to claim our 32nd O’Donoghue Cup. We got off to a lively start with Mikey Casey hitting the back of the net in the 2nd minute of play after a well worked ball from Tony Brosnan. We were unlucky not to get a second goal 2 minutes later after a poor Spa kick out was incepted by Kieran O’Leary. Points from Daithi Casey, Tony Brosnan, Mikey Casey and Michael Potts gave us a very comfortable 1-10 to 0-03 lead at half time. We started the second half just as we finished the first with two Tony Brosnan points. We were reduced to 14 men 5 minutes into the half when David Shaw was shown a black card. While this was a blow, the players responded well and shared the extra responsibility. Second half points from Kieran O’Leary, Brian Looney, Tony Brosnan, Cillian O’Regan and Chris Doncel gave us a well-deserved 11 point win. Mark O’Shea followed in his father’s footsteps to collect the Dr. O’Donoghue Cup which was presented by Fr Paddy O’Donoghue. Kieran O’Leary picked up the Man of the Match award and his 12th O’Donoghue Cup medal. This was a fantastic team performance and a well-deserved victory to finish off the year with some silverware.

A highly acclaimed footballer who played for local teams of the time including St Agatha’s here in Glenflesk. U14 GIRLS CUP: Caherciveen 22 Killarney Cougars 38. The Cougars travelled to Caherciveen on Sunday afternoon and had to produce a strong performance to overcome the South Kerry girls. The home side led after a tough opening quarter 12-10 but a much improved Cougars in the second quarter saw them lead by half time and once ahead the Cougars went onto secure the win and a place in the semi-final in January. Best for Cougars on this occasion were Kate Lyons, Faye Lynch and Leah O'Sullivan.
U16 GIRLS PLATE: Killarney Cougars 46 St Brendans Tralee 21. The Cougars made home advantage count with a good performance in the opening game of the U16 Girls Plate leading throughout the game. Cougars had early baskets by Eva O’Shea, Kate O'Toole and Jennifer Myers gave them a first quarter lead of 5 points. The second quarter saw a very dominant spell by the Cougars adding 17 points through Grace Cox and Kiera Moynihan to lead by 20points. Good defence by the home
side ensured no way back for the visitors despite a good final quarter it was a deserved win for the Cougars in a sporting game. Best for Cougars were Eva O’Shea, Grace Cox, Kiera Moynihan.
U12 BOYS LEAGUE: Killarney Cougars 27 St Brendans 29 (After Overtime). An exciting game that needed overtime to decide the winners, was very much a game of two half's, with the Cougars dominant in the first half with a great comeback by St Brendans dominating through the second half and forcing overtime. Best for Cougars were Rory Moynihan, Ryan Lynch and David Kennelly. St Brendans best performers were Darragh Hannifan, Jack Kearney and Jan Kuleszewilz.
